Apple among tech giants in court fight over voice data used to train AI

Apple and eight other leading tech companies, including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Samsung, are battling proposed class-action lawsuits in Chicago federal court. Plaintiffs — journalists, podcasters, and audiobook narrators — allege the firms violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by using thousands of hours of recorded hum…

Apple Is a Cash Machine. At $4.5 Trillion, That May Not Be Enough.

Apple is spending far less on AI infrastructure than its Big Tech peers while growth has suddenly reaccelerated. The valuation requires it to stay that way.
Apple’s business is unusually simple for a company worth almost $4.5 trillion: sell premium devices, then monetize an installed base through services, subscriptions and an ecosystem that makes leaving increasingly inconvenient.

Thank you for sharing this fascinating breakdown of Apple's valuation and growth metrics! Apple's return to 16% revenue growth in Q3 2026 demonstrates clear operational resilience, even with its net debt dropping to $76 billion and ROIC hitting 32.1%. While a 40x P/E ratio leaves little room for error, seeing a tech giant expand net margins to 27% while reinvesting just 3% of sales shows how powerful their ecosystem moat remains. Check out Capital Libre to explore simple breakdowns of these shifting market dynamics!

How do you disable the ChatGPT integration for Apple Messages

This spyware like feature isn't on by default. It must be installed and enabled by Apple Messages users, but it impacts everyone, including people who use Android or GrapheneOS.

Why the Irish can't fly in the fog

A bit of background on Ireland and it's Israel Delirium
According to the Irish Times (see link below) Ireland’s new €53m government jet was intentionally bought without its Israeli-made landing system required for fog so it will now likely be unable to land in the fog.

DTNS August 29, 2026

For the week ending Saturday August 29, 2026
Welcome to this week's DTNS newsletter. I'm still in California for another week, flying home late next Saturday night on a red-eye flight back to London. I met with Tom and several people at Worldcon in Anaheim on Thursday night for the Sword & Laser podcast meet-up. He was interested to know how I got on using the Timeshifter app for combating jet ja…

BW have been screaming this about JD Vance since 2023 and 2024. JD Vance said it. But no one listened. We're here. This is on the willfully deaf. The fall of democracy is on the willfully ignorant.

Trump's white house isn't so much 'captured' by Musk/Thiel, as it was funded and purchased by them. McPiggy and his cronies are a transactional group, and they re selling all of us out to line their own pockets... Carpetbaggers...

Adam Grosser, The Renaissance Man behind UP.Partners on 40 Years of Investing & Building in Silicon Valley

Intro This is my first conversation with Adam Grosser, a Silicon Valley OG. Adam has had a front row seat to what Silicon Valley is today from being at the centre of personal computing in the early days of Apple in the 1980s as Director of Engineering to directing products at LucasFilm in 1990s and investing in the still early internet days in the 2000s …

‘Bloom, Gloom & Doom’ Reign On in AI. Nvidia, Meta & Bill Gates. ARD #150

...Nvidia's $96B quarter & $13B Hugging Face buy, Meta's $18B teen deal, Gates' AI alarm, & Apple's Sept 9 event.

The narrative surrounding the $1.5 trillion AI investment gap misses the physical reality of hardware deployment cycles. Capital expenditure in data centers isn't a consumable software expense. It's a thirty-year physical asset class that amortizes across multiple server generations. When you measure upfront silicon deployment against single-quarter API token sales, you're mistaking a temporal distribution lag for structural insolvency. ⚡
Nvidia printing $96.2 billion in revenue while swallowing Hugging Face for $12.9 billion isn't just defensive consolidation. It's an infrastructural masterstroke. By securing the primary distribution channel for open-weight models, Nvidia creates a direct demand drain for its take-or-pay neocloud capacity. Software token margins are collapsing toward zero, but the physical sum must still be computed on hardware. Compute isn't just enabling revenue anymore. Compute IS the revenue. 🛠️
Meanwhile, Meta paying an $18 billion regulatory penalty for the social media era serves as the baseline fee for the coming agentic era. Interactive AI companions and autonomous tool-use loops carry far higher systemic liability. Writing a check for a penny on the market-cap dollar converts legal risk into an industry barrier that smaller open-weight competitors can't easily cross. 🏛️
Bill Gates warns of net-negative socio-economic turbulence, yet the physical infrastructure buildout moves forward regardless of policy anxiety. Why? Because the economic incentive shifts permanently from software licensing to physical execution efficiency. Look at Apple's September 9 setup. While closed frontier labs battle soaring cloud cluster costs, Apple is quietly positioning two billion user devices as a private, local inference plane. Running Siri AI on custom local silicon paired with private cloud compute decouples user utility from multi-gigawatt cloud expenditure. 📱
We're witnessing a fundamental transition. Software abstractions are collapsing, leaving hardware register depth and power availability as the true anchors of value. The market keeps climbing the wall of worry because silicon bitlines don't care about market sentiment. They only care about the integrity of the sum. 🔮
Will the ultimate bottleneck of the agent era be decided by software routing layers, or will physical register bit-depth and grid power constraints establish an unyielding floor on who can actually afford to scale?

The reign is not the absence of gloom; it is the navigation of it" is the right frame, and Cahn's $1.5 trillion gap is the right thing to hold against it.
One refinement on that gap. It compares cumulative AI investment against current AI revenue, which mismatches a cost incurred once against a revenue that recurs. Amazon spelled out the two cycles this quarter: data centre capital goes in about two years before servers arrive, then monetises for thirty-plus years without being spent again, while servers break even in a little under three years and carry five-to-six-year lives against five-year contracts. Measured that way the gap is a timing feature, and the question becomes whether payback holds, not whether the two numbers meet this year.
That question has third-party answers. CoreWeave says a five-year term fully repays the asset-level debt and leaves the cluster unlevered. Oracle runs at 97.5% GPU utilisation with 92% of expiring capacity renewed. AWS posted a 39% operating margin, up 650 basis points.
On Hugging Face at 80 times forward revenue: the open-source read is right, and there's a second one. NVIDIA just committed to take-or-pay floors on neocloud capacity, so its worst case is guaranteed capacity nobody rents. Hugging Face already rents compute to developers. That's a demand outlet it now owns.
The prints outrunning the worry wall is the observation. Why they keep outrunning it is the thing worth writing down.
