Creating My Makeup Routine with Clean Beauty

Step by step through trustworthy skincare prep, glowy blush & bronzer combos, non-toxic perfumes, and all the finishing touches you need to feel good in your own skin.
I’ve been really focused on finding products that feel good for my skin, while still giving me the glow and coverage I want. Transparently, I’m also just not the kind of person who wants to switch to a completely new routine every week. I’ve spent a lot of time researching clean brands, trying products, and really curating what works for me so I can fin…

What violet blush does under set lighting
Business of Fashion ran a piece this week calling lilac beauty's new nude, and the number under the headline is the interesting part. Fresha, the booking marketplace a lot of salons run on, reported searches for purple makeup up 229 percent in a month. The color came off the Fall/Winter 2026 runways at Carolina Herrera, Balenciaga and Khaite, and Pat Mc…

“You don’t have to choose between being feminine and being taken seriously.”
Berkleigh Mezzanotte is a sports reporter and broadcaster originally from Maryland but grew up in Florence, South Carolina. “I’ve always had sports in my life. The Competitive Makeup Oscar Exists Because of a Werewolf Movie. It Turns 45 This Month.

The Academy had to invent a category to honor it.
An American Werewolf in London opened on August 21, 1981, and forty-five years later it still settles arguments about my trade. John Landis wrote and directed it, David Naughton and Griffin Dunne carried it, and Rick Baker built the makeup FX that made it famous. The reason it still matters isn't nostalgia. The reason: the Academy had no competitive Bes…

The Last House Put a Puppeteer in a Silicone Suit and Then Flooded the Room

When the water tank decides the build
Netflix ran an ending-explainer on The Last House on August 11, and buried under the mythology talk is a production note worth reading twice. Production designer Kevin Jenkins told Tudum the tank came first. “We knew we were going to put this in a tank,” he said, “so one of the early conversations that Louis and I had was we wanted to do a practical cre…

We Asked, You Answered: Thousands of Cosmo Readers Shared Their Favorite Beauty Products

An early sneak peek at the winners of our 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Cosmo readers have really strong opinions about their favorite beauty products. It was one of the first things I learned when I became Cosmo’s beauty editor four years ago, just before we launched our first-ever Readers’ Choice Beauty Awards in 2022. Every year, we put out a massive survey for readers to vote on and pick their favorite products. It’s so…

3 Disturbing Differences Between “Looksmaxxing” Industries And Female Beauty Industries

I need to write more about this because it genuinely terrified me.
I will be the first one to say that the beauty industry is a deeply double-edged sword. On one hand, it literally got started by ads to encourage women to feel bad about themselves so that they could get a good husband.

My partner and I have spoken a lot about how looksmaxxing is more similar to an eating disorder and mental illness than it is actual health and wellness, and that seems to answer all of the questions about why there are no guardrails. Because it’s the men’s version of 2014 ED tumblr. They gatekeep among themselves, uplift their strategies internally, the difference is that Patriarchy is a system in decline, so it appropriated these very disordered approaches to lifestyle and body care almost immediately as a way to revive itself. 🫪

Honestly, I didn't know anything about this trend until you wrote about it. It got me wondering if it was related to Incels, Red Pillers, and the general Manosphere dogma. Turns out, it totally is (based on my cursory research).
At this point, the guys falling for this toxic garbage need some help. Looksmaxxing to get the girl is a waste of energy when what (broad brush here) is a better method is using humor, wit, listening, and above all, respect- guys, please, respect women...it's not hard to do. These fellows are not getting that sort of guidance. Then again, there's no money in it. As you've stated, when the looksmaxxing doesn't work- they're lost and left where they were or worse. How long before there are recovery group meeting for these guys?
Also, it's not in any way lost on me that women have been subjected to impossible standards for-fucking-ever and that there's a whole industry that sets the pace and then offers a cure to the psychosis they've instilled. It's insidious, abusive, and a crime against humanity. Other than that I have no opinion.

The Politics of “Doing It for Yourself”

How patriarchy, capitalism and beauty culture shape female desire.
There is a particular kind of liberal feminist rhetoric that insists women’s choices must always be treated as completely autonomous. “I do it for myself, not men” has become the ultimate trump card. The woman who gets fillers, wears uncomfortable shoes, spends hours doing her hair, gets cosmetic surgery, or meticulously performs femininity is expected …

This is amazing. It so eloquently explains what has been an amorphous sense of contradiction in my mind. I’m a firm believer that women have agency and should be treated as the adults we are and not as the children my evangelical Christian childhood told us we were, but at the same time our “choices” also seem to be the product of having all of the other paths blocked, or too difficult, or not worth the trouble or consequences. It’s not a free choice if you can’t say no.

This is such an important distinction. Sometimes reclamation begins with asking: Did I choose this, or was I taught to want it?

IN CONVERSATION WITH LYNSKI

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE #13
Lynski traces her own creativity back to a few specific threads: the first time she saw her own face transformed by makeup, the powerful women she grew up around in 1990s Latvia, and her enduring love of the colour red. I agree with you 100% on this and the whole post, Hannah:
"And if I’m spending luxury foundation money, I don’t particularly want to become a cosmetic chemist before breakfast."
And I laughed so much reading it!
I am tired of trying to fight to find my perfect one, therefore I have settled on my favorite tint, unpretentious, simple to use and doesn't oxidize on me. I know my Chanel water tint is pricey, but, at least I know I will use it all and feel god about it.
