It was last summer, when a few of my friends visited my home for the first time, that I began to notice it; the importance of kitchen as a pivotal space in our experience of home. As we ignored the living room and the dining room and headed straight to the kitchen, to comfortably settle there for hours on end to talk about everything, my friend S casually remarked, “This is the best space in this home of yours”. She was right, there was something about the way the light entered that room in the morning, making you think that it has its own sun illuminating the whole house in a golden halo. All of our guests naturally gravitated towards the kitchen, as the “living” room wished it was named different; more living was done in the kitchen than in the living room. (The kitchen takes a bow as the living room slowly exits the stage). All of the most pivotal conversations of our life has happened in our kitchen. It was there that I first decided to take literature as my course of study, where I planned to go abroad and subsequently abandoned that plan, where we have had the most heated discussions about marriage, where we rejoiced at having gotten my first job, where we grieve over our lost grandparents and the void they left behind and also where we celebrate the most ordinary moments of our life with that grim black tiled floor becoming our platform to speak, rejoice or even just vent out. The kitchen can be called the heart of our house, without which it would never have earned its place as a “home”.

Kitchens, in general, are also spaces where the politics of every household rears its ugly head. Who stays in the kitchen, who gets to leave, who does the work and who just helps fill the salt and pepper shakers- the signifiers of the hierarchies of a household are very clearly visible in the kitchen. It is where the hidden layers of the inner psyche of the house is left to dry out in the sun.

I have witnessed the most hilarious and genuine of conversations in the kitchen as compared to the dining table, which is a pretentious cousin of the kitchen. In the dining room, every gesture, every word you speak turns out to be part of a performance of cordiality and forced normativity. It becomes a space where your position on the checklist of success is measured while the kitchen becomes the backstage where you have a laugh about the egoistic malapropisms that just happened at the dining table. The kitchen has witnessed your feelings at its crudest, rawest form, incomparable to any other room in your house. The kitchen then becomes a space which, literally and symbolically nourishes you as a person.

I still remember the kitchen of our taravadu which was owned in the most regal sense of the word, by my grandmother. She commanded it and all her magical recipes came to life there. The memories of her piping hot neyyappams collected in big brown baskets as she fried each batch, is one of the sweetest memories of my childhood. I can still remember my tastebuds having a fiesta as she gives me a small one to taste from the very first set. I also have memories of burnt tongues, a result of me sneaking into the kitchen and trying to steal one from a freshly fried batch. The kitchen had a black flooring, without much sheen and it was always filled with smoke from the oven. The way the silver stream of smoke flowed in from the mini skylight, reminding us of the stairwell to heaven that we watched in the previous episode of ‘Tom and Jerry’ as kids, gave the room a magical feeling. It was one of the darkest rooms in the house, yet, we have had the best memories there. I have never thought about how my grandmother would have liked to command that as ‘her’ space in the household apart from her garden, though she did an impeccable job at that. I am sure that kitchen would have seen the most vulnerable sides of her, twitching and turning beneath that impenetrably strong exterior.

Decades later, when I finally started living in an apartment of my own, the kitchen remained the most happening place, the place where we talked about everything as we made the Sunday special chicken stew or had our occasional biryani, strictly following amma’s recipe, which was a way of me coping with missing my her food and her presence. From my childhood kitchen to my own, it becomes a space where heirlooms of the family is stored in the form of recipes. As the spices exude an aroma, every time we make the stew, I feel like my grandmother is around. That gives me the strength to believe that you can go on with your life, chasing what you want, no matter how hard it gets, as long as you can access your childhood home and its memories through your kitchen- as long as you can come home to the magic of time coming to a halt there, right beside your red pickle jars. It is a space that reveals its magic only to the ones who are truly willing to let its light enter them; for the rest, it’s just another wall in between the platforms 9 and 10.

The last time I went home for Christmas, we had our cousins over for the annual Christmas gathering. As usual, the evening basked in the aroma of warm cake, the Christmas-red grape wine prepared by my father and my mother’s classic Christmas dinner- her special Chicken biryani. A cherubic Jesus slept with his eyes open in the manger, unable to resist the tempting fragrances of his birthday feast. Dinner was served on the table and as everyone took their seats at the festive Christmas dinner table, the customary ritual of dinner conversations began. It started off with compliments for mom’s biryani- a two minute prayer of gratitude for hours of her hard work in the kitchen- then drifted off into the usual topics of politics, religion and the world. It was lead on and indulged in, obviously by the men in my family(more takers to it than the second serving of the delicious biryani). The rigor with which they proceeded in bashing each and every politician ruling the state, with the lame innocence of a child who thinks he can change the world, was intriguing for me to watch. The dinner table thus became a stage for the performance of what I would like to call ‘conversation chivalry’ by which they fed their undying appetite for doing something great, something which stands out. It has been happening for years and somehow, I never really gave any thought to the actual politics of it.

It is a well established stereotype that women somehow lack the ability to engage in “actual” conversations; all they do is gossip with each other interjected by occasional musings on the latest fashion trends featured in women’s magazines. Real conversations, about topics that matter, were always considered the monopoly of men. Women are mocked for having talked for hours relentlessly about all that “trivial” stuff while the men break a sweat engaging in passionate conversations about the important affairs under the sun and even beyond. In fact, women’s conversations were not even called so, but crushed under the weight of the stereotypical label of “gossiping”. It is after that night that I thought about and actually observed the kind of conversations that my mother had with her sisters. They talked about matters from their immediate reality, about the lives of the people who were close to them, about their stolen moments of joy, peace and their sorrows. As opposed to popular belief, they did not talk about juicy gossip from their others’ lives, but discussed about what was actually happening at their workplaces or homes and how those affected them personally. Their conversations were colored with the depth, impact and necessity that lacked in the performance of those “chivalric” conversations. It felt so natural as compared to the cultivated sophistication of typical dinner table conversations. As I write about this, I hear myself thinking, “Aren’t these things that actually matter?”

I agree with Butler’s theory of performativity of gender, but it is that evening I thought about the difference in the intensity of performativity, in terms of the conversations between both the genders. Men somehow feel the need to make these acts of artificial sophistication which they call conversations, heard and noted by everyone in the room. While women carry on with their natural topics of conversations, free from the artifice of performance that somehow nourishes the male ego, the men are seen struggling to impress everyone they talk to with their rare and unique knowledge about the most unnecessary of topics like say the amount spent on the chief minister’s recent trip to the U.S or how our country is at its most glorious period of development under the rule of a fascist government. I can’t seem to find an answer to why they aren’t bothered by the monotony of these topics or by how much they tire the other people in the room with their “rare” wisdom, but the scene from Titanic seems the most appropriate depiction of this phenomena. When we see the men get up from the dinner table to go to the smoke room, we hear Rose whisper to Jack, “Now they will go into the other room and congratulate each other for being the masters of the universe”. That line floated in the air that Christmas evening, to go and settle beside the baby Jesus who would soon grow up to master this art to validate the male dinner table conversations, well documented in his glorious biography.

I rise with my red hair.

And I eat men like air. - Lady Lazarus, Sylvia Plath

The above lines by Plath were floating in blazing neon colours in front of my eyes, the entire time I was watching Lokah. The heated discussion that we had in the Plath poetry session the day before- the fiery red rage that we as women collectively inhabit- was being poured out into the big screen right in front of my eyes, that it seemed uncanny. The experience was absolutely memorable in the way it portrayed the female protagonist who was the “real” centre of the narrative.

It was with a slight apprehension and even lower expectation that I went to watch Lokah on its very first day of release. As a person who is very selective when it comes to the movies that I choose to watch in a theatre, I found myself questioning this decision because there was really nothing that lured me into the film except the fact that it was a female-centric film. I have neither watched a single film by the director nor was I a big fan of superhero movies. It was the trailer (as it should) that drew me into the movie with the novelty of its concept, especially in Malayalam cinema, and the alluring balance between superhero action/ horror scenes and promised comic interludes that helped me persuade myself to go watch it. As we entered the theatre with its multiple screens- representing the confused state of mind I was in before getting there- my mind was empty, the unsettling calm after an array of chaotic screechy noise.

The film began with Chandra and immediately, I was drawn into her world with its gothic charm perfected by her cold, blood-black outfits mirroring her mind, perfected by her ember red hair. The scene where she first fights an abusive/ toxic/ patronizing (a typical ) man, the film piqued my interest and had it locked in there till the end of the movie. That is where I saw Plath’s Lady Lazarus actually rise out of her ashes and eat men alive (quite literally here). The interweaving of mythology and folklores of Kerala into it, making it really accessible to the audience, along with its powerful music and beautiful cinematography are other aspects that made the film the monumental success it is, but here, I am venturing to explore one aspect of it that caught me by surprise- the treatment of gender in the film, especially the portrayal of the female superhero, Chandra.

We have had many films in the Indian film industries which proclaim itself to be “feminist”, “female-centric”, “empowering” etc., out of which only a handful of them really keep their word to its truest sense. One disappointing film that I watched in the theatre a couple months back, was Bougainvillea, directed by Amal Neerad, that called itself feminist (turned out to be an actual metaphor for men who proudly call themselves feminists but still believe that pink is for girls and black is for men (just one of the examples). The film shows women literally being thrown around, abused, mentally and physically assaulted by generations of men. The feminist act the director had in mind, from what I presume, was the one final gunshot against the oppressor and selective murderer of young women, by the female lead in the very last minute of the movie which doesn’t even kill him. The film closes with him telling her that he will come back to avenge for this. I was infuriated after two and a half hours of violence against women glorified and normalized on screen which cowered under the stinking black mask of a woman-centric film.

The horror movies are no exception to this; though you have a female ghost, her past would be shown in a disturbingly graphic manner with her being raped or killed in gruesome ways by a man/men (cruelty of which we very well know men are capable of, and don’t really need reminders), that we ultimately start feeling sorry for the ghost instead of feeling satisfied/ satiated that justice was served, with her murderous revenge. Bulbul is an example of this. You are left with the brutal memories of her being assaulted than her awakening or her revenge. The man and his cruelty makes a lasting impact than her strength, powers or character, defeating the proclaimed purpose of the film. Another annoying trait that is ubiquitous in horror or female superhero movies is the attention drawn to her body than her powers. There will be subtle or many a times, obvious and unnecessary sexualization of the central female character, which ultimately tries to satisfy the perverted male audience.

Lokah stands as a far-fetched dream that comes true on the big screen which is in contrast to all the above female-centric and superhero films. Here, Chandra is shown as a yakshi who doesn’t wear the white of submissive purity, but wears the coal black of agency and power. She is a true superhero through and through, with no male saviour dropping from the heaven of patriarchal hyper masculinity, to “help” her in her battles against the evil men of the world. She is enough to fight for herself; like my friend rightly pointed out, her entire story, including her past, is “constructed like a male superhero’s”, where the question of justice and honour is not just tied to her body or her sexuality, but the cruelty towards her family which is a result of systemic marginalization. The perverted male gaze is surprisingly absent from the film, as compared with all the other movies in this category. The final scene where she fights with the main antagonist of the story, leaves us hoping for an intervention from any one of the men shown in the film, which made me realize the conditioning that affects our perception towards films. Even when we know she is capable of fighting the villain, we find ourselves thinking, someone will ultimately come help her. But the film brilliantly subverts the cliched narrative by letting her fight him all alone. Even the Kalliyankattu Neeli folk tale where the yakshi is ultimately “tamed” and “killed” by a male priest is beautifully subverted in the film, helping it stay true to what it claims to be. The experience was a truly refreshing one, especially in a context when even the female-centric films also sadly fall prey to patriarchal and misogynistic undertones, stamping ruthlessly on the hopes of watching a good film. In the times when propagandist films made in your mother tongue win the national award and tarnishes the vibrant and promising variety of good films created avidly in the industry, Lokah offered becomes a saviour of the deserving stature of Malayalam cinema, like she saves Sunny from the accident, finally becoming the first step towards the dream- a female “knight in her shining armor”.

കാലത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കഥയി, കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കുണ്ടാവുന്ന അനിവാര്യ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ പോലെ, എന്നിലുടലെടുത്ത ഒരു ഇഷ്ടമാണ് വായനയോടുള്ളത്. മദ്രാസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കോളേജിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ലിറ്ററേച്ചർ പഠിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചപ്പോഴും, അത്, ശാസ്ത്രവിഷയങ്ങളുടെ, സംശയത്തിനുള്ള സാധ്യത അശേഷം അനുവദിക്കാത്ത നിയമങ്ങളോഡും, കർക്കശ്യക്കാരായ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങളോടുമുള്ള രോഷം കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വളരെ കുറച്ച മാത്രം വായിക്കുകയും എഴുതുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ഞാൻ, ആദ്യദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ആ ക്ലാസ്സ്മുറികളുടെ ചുവരുകളെപ്പോലെ നിശബ്ദമായി ചുറ്റും നടക്കുന്ന സാഹിത്യ ചർച്ചകളുടെ ഒരു കാഴ്ചക്കാരി മാത്രമായി ഒതുങ്ങിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഉച്ചഭക്ഷണം മറന്നാലും, മറക്കാതെ തങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയത്തോട് ചേർത്ത് അവരോരോരുത്തരും പിടിച്ചിരുന്ന വിവിധങ്ങളായ പുഷ്ടകങ്ങളോടുള്ള സ്നേഹം, എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കാവുന്നതിനുമപ്പുറമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് പതിയെ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് അത് തീർക്കുന്ന തേരിലേറി പല ലോകങ്ങളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് വായനയുടെ, സാഹിത്യലോകത്തിന്റെ, അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് തീർക്കുന്ന മായാജാലകങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തി എനിക്ക് ബോധ്യമായത്. ജെയിൻ ഓസ്റ്റിൻ, ഷാർലറ്റ് ബ്രോന്റെ മുതലായവരുടെ ക്ലാസിക് കൃതികൾ വായിച്ചാണ് തുടക്കം; പിന്നീടത് സൗത് ഏഷ്യൻ സാഹിത്യത്തിലേക്കും, ഇന്ത്യൻ-ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തിലേക്കും വളരുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ലിറ്ററേച്ചർ സിലബസ് ഘടന പോലെ.

ഓരോ കൃതിയും വരച്ചിടുന്ന മനോഹരങ്ങളായ ലോകങ്ങളും, ഏറെ സ്നേഹം തോന്നുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും, പിന്നെ ഓരോ വരിയും നെയ്യുന്ന വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന അര്ഥശകലങ്ങളും അവ കൊണ്ട് ചെന്നെത്തിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചപാടുകളും കണ്ട് ഇതുപോലെ മനോഹരമായ, അനുവർത്തന സാധ്യതയുള്ള മറ്റൊരു വിഷയമില്ലെന്ന ഉറപ്പാണ് പിന്നീട് അതിൽ തന്നെ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും എടുത്ത് അത് തന്നെ പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഉള്ള തീരുമാനത്തിന്റെ ജീവവായു ആയിത്തീർന്നത്. ഇതിനെല്ലാം അടിസ്ഥാനമായ പുസ്തകങ്ങളോടുള്ള ഇഷ്ടം ഉടലെടുത്ത വഴികൾ ചെന്നെത്തുന്നത് കോടിക്കുളത്തുള്ള എന്റെ വീട്ടിലാണ്.

ഈ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം എറണാകുളത്തുള്ള എന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ബുക്സ്റ്റോളിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു സഞ്ചി നിറയെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങി ഇറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ കൂടെ വന്ന അച്ഛൻ എന്നോട് വായന ഒരു നല്ല ശീലമാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ പറഞ്ഞ അവസാന വാചകം, "ഞാനോ അമ്മയോ ഒന്നും അങ്ങനെ വായിക്കാറില്ല " എന്നാണ്. അതെന്നെ ഒരുപാട് ചിന്തിപ്പിച്ചു. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തു കലാമത്സരങ്ങൾക്കായി ഞങ്ങളെ ഒരുക്കിയിരുന്ന, വാളിന്റെ മൂർച്ചയുള്ള, തൊട്ടാൽ ചോര പൊടിയുന്ന പ്രസംഗങ്ങൾ എഴുതിത്തന്നിരുന്ന ഡാഡിയും, നാടകങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള തിരക്കഥ തയാറാക്കുകയും അതിനായി പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്ന അമ്മയും, എങ്ങനെ സാഹിത്യലോകത്തിനു അന്യരാകും? ആ ചിന്തയാണ് എന്നെ ഈ സാഹിത്യത്തോടുള്ള അഭിരുചിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും താഴെയുള്ള അടിവേരുകൾ കണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ പ്രചോദിപ്പിച്ചത്. ആ തായ്‌വേരുകളിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു യാത്രയാണ് ഈ ലേഖനം.

കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തു ഡാഡിയുടെ ഓഫീസ് മുറിയിൽ ഒരു ചില്ലലമാരി മുഴുവൻ നിറച്ചുവെച്ചിരുന്ന പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ മനോഹരങ്ങളായ മുഖചിത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് സാഹിത്യത്തിൻറെ വര്ണശബളങ്ങളായ യാഥാർഥ്യത്തെ ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി കണ്ടറിയുന്നത്. പ്രഥമദൃഷ്ട്യാ ആകർഷണീയമായി തോന്നിയത് അവയുടെ ബാഹ്യസൗന്ദര്യമാണെങ്കിലും കൂടുതൽ അടുത്തറിയുന്തോറും അവ കൂടുതൽ ഓജസ്സുള്ളവയായിത്തീർന്നു. ആദ്യമായി ഞാൻ കാണുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പുസ്തകം 'സ്വാതന്ദ്ര്യം അർദ്ധരാത്രിയിൽ' എന്ന ലാറി കോളിന്സിന്റെ പുസ്തകമായിരുന്നു. ഇത്രെയും വലിയ പേരുള്ള, ഇത്ര വലുപ്പമുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എങ്ങനെ അച്ഛൻ വായിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് ഞാൻ പലതവണ ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അവയിലൂടെയെല്ലാം കണ്ണോടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പലഹാരങ്ങൾ നോക്കി ചില്ലുകൂടിനു മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു കുട്ടിയുടെ കൗതുകം എന്റെ കണ്ണിൽ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ആദ്യം അച്ഛൻ എടുത്തുതന്നത് കഥാപുസ്തകങ്ങളാണ്. ഈസോപ് കഥകളും, പഞ്ചതന്ദ്രം കഥകളുമെല്ലാം എന്റെ ഒഴിവുസമയങ്ങളിൽ എന്റെ സഹായത്തിനെത്തി. അവയിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ രാത്രിയിൽ എന്റെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളെ ശബ്ദമാനമാക്കി. അങ്ങനെയാണ് വായനയുടെ ലോകത്തേക്കുള്ള ആദ്യചുവടുകൾ ഞാൻ വെക്കുന്നത്. അതുപിന്നെ എല്ലാ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയും പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്ന ബാലഭൂമിക്കായി ഉള്ള നവിയുമായുള്ള വഴക്കുകളിലൂടെ, വായനയോടുള്ള ഒരു തരം ഭ്രാന്തമായ ഇഷ്ടമായി മാറി. പിന്നീട് ഒരു പിറന്നാൾ ദിവസം മഹാത്മാ ഗാന്ധിയുടെ 'എന്റെ സത്യാന്വേഷണ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ' ഡാഡി സമ്മാനിച്ചപ്പോൾ, അതുവരെ വായിച്ചിരുന്ന കഥാപുസ്ഥകങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും കുറച്ചുകൂടെ ഗൗരവമുള്ള, സാഹിത്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള വാതിലാണ് എനിക്ക് മുൻപിലായി തുറന്നുതന്നത്‍. ആ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചുതീർന്നപ്പോൾ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ട അഭിമാനം പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത ഒന്നാണ്. അങ്ങനെ, പുസ്തകവായനയിലൂടെ കൈവരുന്ന സന്തോഷം കാണിച്ചുതരുകയും, അവ ശേഖരിച്ചു ഭംഗിയായി അടുക്കി നിധിപോലെ സൂക്ഷിക്കുമ്പോൾ ലഭിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സംതൃപ്തി സ്വപ്നം കാണാൻ എന്നെ പ്രചോദിപ്പിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം വാങ്ങിത്തന്ന് വായനയുടെ ലോകത്തേക്ക് എന്നെയും നവിയെയും കൈപിടിച്ച് നടത്തിയതും തീർച്ചയായും ഡാഡിയാണ് .

അമ്മ എന്നെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്‍ എന്റെ എഴുത്തിലാണ്. ഒരു സാഹിത്യകാരിക്ക് എന്നെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം ഏറ്റവും അനിവാര്യം, കാര്യങ്ങൾ നിരീക്ഷിക്കാനും, സാധാരണമെന്നു കരുതി തള്ളിക്കളയപ്പെടുന്ന ജീവിത പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളെ വർണിക്കാനുമുള്ള കഴിവാണ്. അതെന്നെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചുതന്നത് അമ്മയാണ്. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ നിമിഷവും സമ്മാനിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചകളെ ഒരു കൊച്ചുകുട്ടിയുടെ കൗതുകത്തോടെ എന്നും ആസ്വദിച്ചിരുന്ന അമ്മ, അതുല്യമായ ഒരു ദൈവസിദ്ധിയാണ് എന്നിലേക്ക് കൈമാറിയതെന്ന് പിന്നീട് എഴുതി തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയത്. ആദ്യമായി സ്കൂൾ മാഗസീനു വേണ്ടി ഏറെ ഭയത്തോടെയും ഉത്ഖണ്ഠയോടെയും ഒരു കവിത എഴുതിനല്കിയപ്പോൾ, അതിൽ പ്രകൃതിയിൽ നിന്നും എടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള ചെറിയ ചെറിയ രൂപകങ്ങളാണ് അതിന്റെ ഭംഗിയെന്ന് അന്നത്തെ മലയാളം ടീച്ചർ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ, ഞാൻ അമ്മയുടെയും ഡാഡിയുടെയും പ്രകൃതിഭംഗി ആസ്വദിക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവിനെയാണ് ഓർത്തത്. അതിൽ നിന്നാണ്, ഇന്നും എന്റെ കൃതികളിൽ, വായിക്കുന്നവരെല്ലാം എടുത്തുപറഞ്ഞഭിനന്ദിക്കുന്ന, ആ വൈകാരികതലം ഉടലെടുത്തത്.

ഈസോപ് കഥകളിൽ തുടങ്ങി, ക്‌ളാസിക്കുകളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ചു, ബുക്കർ പ്രൈസിനർഹമായ അരുന്ധതി റോയുടെ 'ദി ഗോഡ് ഓഫ് സ്‌മോൾ തിങ്ങ്സ്' വരെയെത്തിനിൽകുന്ന സാഹിത്യലോകത്തുടുള്ള ഭ്രമതുല്യമായ അഭിനിവേശം എനിക്ക് കൈവന്നത് എന്നിലെ പല ഗുണങ്ങളെയും പോലെ, വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് തന്നെയാണ്. ഞാനും പയ്യെ പയ്യെ ശേഖരിച്ചു വെക്കുന്നുണ്ട്, ഡാഡി യുടെ ചില്ലലമാരി പോലെ അനവധി അലമാരികൾ നിറക്കാനുള്ള, എന്റെ ജീവവായുവായി എന്നും കൂടെനിൽകുന്ന, എന്നിലൂടെ മരണം വരെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന എന്റെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ.

ജൂണിലെ, മഴയുടെ ചാരനിറം പുതച്ച ഒരു ദിവസത്തിന്റെ കണികകൾക്കിടയിൽ, അനുഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ സ്വർണനൂലിഴകലാൾ തീർത്ത ഇളവെയിൽ പോലെയാണ് അമ്മ. കോരിച്ചൊരിയുന്ന മഴയുള്ള ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു തണലായി, വെയിലിന്റെ ഇളം ചൂടുപകരാനായി എപ്പോഴും തയാറായി ഇരിക്കുന്ന ആൾ. അമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷ വളരെ രസമേറിയ ഒന്നാണ് . ചെറിയ പനിയും അതിൽ കുറച്ചേറെ മടിയും കൂടെ ചാലിച്ചു സ്കൂളിൽ പോകാതിരിക്കാനുള്ള കാരണങ്ങൾ അമ്മയുടെ മുൻപിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ, അമ്മ, പൊതുവെ ചിരി മാത്രം തൂകി കണ്ടിരുന്ന മുഖം കുറച്ച കടുപ്പിച്ചു പറയും, “അത് നാളെ രാവിലെ ആകുമ്പോഴേക്കും മരുന്നുകൊണ്ടങ്ങു മാറിക്കോളും. അതിനായി ക്ലാസ് മുടക്കേണ്ട" എന്ന്. അവർണനീയമായ നിരാശ ഉള്ളിലടക്കി ഇതേ കാര്യം ഡാഡിയുടെ അടുത്തു പറയുമ്പോൾ ഞങ്ങൾ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത്ര അനുകമ്പയോടുകൂടെ ഡാഡി പറയും, "എന്നാ പിന്നെ ഇന്ന് റെസ്റ് എടുക്കു, സ്കൂളിൽ പോവണ്ട" എന്ന്. പുറമെ ഉള്ള ലാളനകളുടെ പ്രകടനങ്ങളെക്കാളും നിശബ്ദമായ സൂചനകളിലൂടെ പുറത്തു കാണിക്കുന്ന സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷയായിരുന്നു അമ്മയുടേത്. ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ പറയുമെങ്കിലും രാത്രി അടുത്തുവന്നു പനി ഉണ്ടോയെന്ന് മെല്ലെ തൊട്ടുനോക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. പനി ഉണ്ടെന്ന് മനസ്സിലായികഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ആ പനിയുടെ ചൂടിൽ അമ്മയുടെ ഉള്ളു പൊള്ളുന്നുണ്ടാവും. കുറച്ചു പക്വത ആയപ്പോഴാണ് ആ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളിലൊളിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന മൂകമായ നീലസാഗരം അമ്മയുടെ കണ്ണുകളിലെ തിളക്കത്തിലൂടെയും ഓരോ വാക്കുകൾക്കിടയിലെ നിശബ്ദതകളിലൂടെയും തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ സാധിച്ചത്. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ആഞ്ഞടിക്കുന്ന തിരമാലകൾക്കിടയിലും ഒരു നങ്കുരം പോലെ കൈപിടിച്ചു നിർത്താൻ ശക്തിയുള്ള അമ്മയുടെ ആ സ്നേഹം, പകരം വെക്കാനാവാത്ത ഒന്നാണ്. ഇന്നും എന്ത് വിഷമം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും അമ്മയോട് സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, കൊടും ഇരുട്ടിൽ നിലാവിന്റെ പാൽകുടം തൂവിയപോലെ സമാധാനത്തിന്റെ വെള്ളിവെളിച്ചമായി ആ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ മാറും.

അമ്മയിൽ ഞാൻ എന്നും അത്ഭുദത്തോടെ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന ഒരു സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതയാണ് ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ആസ്വദിക്കാനും, അവയിൽ വലിയ സന്തോഷം കണ്ടെത്താനുമുള്ള അമ്മയുടെ കഴിവ്. അമ്മക്ക് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട, ഒരുമിച്ചുള്ള കാർയാത്രകളിൽ ജനലിനു പുറത്തു കാണുന്ന ഓരോ കാഴ്ചയും കണ്ടാസ്വദിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയുടെ കണ്ണിലെ കൗതുകം, ആദ്യമായി കടലുകണ്ട ഒരു കൊച്ചുകുട്ടിയുടെ കണ്ണിലെ നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ അത്ഭുതം പോലെ തോന്നും. പലവിധ വേദനകൾ തന്നെ അലട്ടുമ്പോഴും അവയെ എല്ലാം മറന്ന്, തീർത്തും നിസ്സാരമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ ശ്രെദ്ധിക്കുകയും അവയിൽ ആനന്ദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് ഒരു ദൈവസിദ്ധിയാണെന്ന് എനിക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

അമ്മയിൽ ഞാൻ എന്നും അത്ഭുദത്തോടെ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന ഒരു സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതയാണ് ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ആസ്വദിക്കാനും, അവയിൽ വലിയ സന്തോഷം കണ്ടെത്താനുമുള്ള അമ്മയുടെ കഴിവ്. അമ്മക്ക് പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട, ഒരുമിച്ചുള്ള കാർയാത്രകളിൽ ജനലിനു പുറത്തു കാണുന്ന ഓരോ കാഴ്ചയും കണ്ടാസ്വദിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയുടെ കണ്ണിലെ കൗതുകം, ആദ്യമായി കടലുകണ്ട ഒരു കൊച്ചുകുട്ടിയുടെ കണ്ണുകളിലെ അത്ഭുതം പോലെ എനിക്ക് തോന്നാറുണ്ട്. പലവിധ വേദനകൾ തന്നെ അലട്ടുമ്പോഴും അവയെ എല്ലാം മറന്ന്, തീർത്തും നിസ്സാരമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ ശ്രെദ്ധിക്കുകയും അവയിൽ ആനന്ദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് ഒരു ദൈവസിദ്ധിയാണെന്ന് എനിക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അമ്മയുടെ ഈ രീതിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഞങ്ങളിലെ സർഗാത്മക ഭാവനയുടെ തുടക്കം. ഓരോ എഴുത്തുകാരും ജന്മം കൊള്ളുന്നത്, നിസ്‌സാരമെന്ന് കരുതി പലരും കാണാണ്ട് പോകുന്ന കാഴ്ചകളും, ജീവിതപ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളും കാണാനും, വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ അവയെ വർണിക്കാനും കഴിയുമ്പോഴാണ്. അത് ഞങ്ങളെ പഠിപ്പിയ്ച്ചത്, ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ ചെറിയ കണവും ശ്രെദ്ധിക്കാനും ആസ്വദിക്കാനുമുള്ള അമ്മയുടേം ഡാഡിയുടേം കഴിവാണ്.

അമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹം അനുഭവിക്കാൻ എല്ലാവർക്കും പല സാഹചര്യങ്ങളാൽ സാധിച്ചെന്നുവരില്ല. എന്നാൽ രണ്ടമ്മമാരുടെ സ്നേഹം അനുഭവിക്കാനും, അതിൽ വളർന്നുവരുവാനും സാധിക്കുന്നത് വളരെ കുറച്ചു പേർക്ക് മാത്രമായിരിക്കും എന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ച പറയാം. രണ്ടമ്മമാരാണ് ഞങ്ങൾക്ക്. ലൗലി അമ്മയും ലാലി അമ്മയും. ലഭിക്കേണ്ടതിലും ഇരട്ടി സ്നേഹവും കരുതലും ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി വളർന്നുപോന്ന പുണ്യജന്മമാണ് ഞങ്ങളുടേത് എന്ന് നിസംശയം പറയാം. കണ്ണാടിയിൽ കാണുന്ന പ്രതിബിംബം പോലെ വർത്തിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടുപേർ; ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ കളിയായിട്ട് , ഇവർ തമ്മിൽ മാറിപ്പോവില്ലേ എന്ന് ആളുകൾ ചോദിക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അത്ര ഒരുപോലെ ആയിരിക്കും രണ്ടുപേരുടെയും രൂപവും വസ്ത്രധാരണവും ഒക്കെ. പക്ഷെ ഞങ്ങൾക്കൊരിക്കലും ഇവർ തമ്മിൽ മാറിപോയിട്ടില്ല. കാരണം രണ്ടുപേരും ഞങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ പലവിധത്തിലാണ് സ്വാധീനിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 'അമ്മ കടലിലെ തിരമാലകൾ പോലെയാണെങ്കിൽ, ലാലി 'അമ്മ ഉൾക്കടലിലെ ശാന്തമായ ശക്തിയാണ്.

പലവിധ ക്ലേശങ്ങളാൽ മനസ്സ് വിഷമിക്കുമ്പോഴും മായാതെ കാക്കുന്ന അമ്മമാരുടെ ചിരി, ജീവിതത്തിൽ മുന്നോട്ടു പോകാൻ ഞങ്ങളെ പ്രചോദിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അവരുടെ പിറന്നാളാണ് ഇന്ന്. ഈ ദിവസത്തിന്റെ അത്രയും, ഞങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതങ്ങളെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം മൂല്യമുള്ള ഒരു ദിവസം ഇല്ലായെന്ന് തന്നെ പറയാം. സ്വർഗത്തിൽ നിന്ന് രണ്ടു മാലാഖമാർ ഭൂമിയിൽ വന്നവതരിച്ച പുണ്യദിനം. ദൈവത്തെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോയെന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിനുള്ള എന്റെ മറുപടി ഇവരുടെ ഈ പുഞ്ചിരിയാണ്.

…by early June the south-west monsoon breaks and there are three months of wind and water with short spells of sharp, glittering sunshine that thrilled children snatch to play with. The countryside turns an immodest green. Boundaries blur as tapioca fences take root and bloom. Brick walls turn mossgreen. Pepper vines snake up electric poles. Wild creepers burst through laterite banks and spill across the flooded roads.

When I first read ‘The God of Small Things’ by Arundhati Roy (way later than I was supposed to, as a student of Literature), it was these very poignant initial lines, which accurately painted a picture of the monsoon season in Kerala, that caught my immediate attention. The monsoon showers which used to arrive in the early weeks of June, now hails earlier, like a counter march against global warming. It was this promise of a month long break of “wind and water with short spells of sharp, glittering sunshine” that kept me going in the scorching and relentless Hyderabad heat. As they say, it is always the promise of a return that makes the journey worthwhile. And for me, the return was always from the monotonous dusty alleys of a city to the lush green landscape of Kerala, veiled in silver droplets of monsoon rain, like an immodest bride.

Rainy days in Kerala have a unique anatomy with its long grey days wrinkled with occasional streaks of a shy blue sky. The day begins like a lazy school boy, struggling to wake up to go to school after a two month long summer break. Mornings are defined by black umbrellas lined up on the roads, of people going to the 7.00 a.m mass, like bats in broad daylight, blindly following the mushy paths to the promised land. From then, it’s a continuum of heavy and not so heavy rains falling in different rhythms and intensity, like the performances of different theatre troupes of the same script. Each rain makes the trees act in a different way; while some just deliver the lines, others live and breathe in between them. The tapping of the droplets on unearthly surfaces and the slurping of them by a very thirsty earth serve as our wake up calls.

The best time to enjoy the monsoon rain is in the evening with a cup of steaming hot chai. Sipping hot tea while watching the green leaves murmuring to its occasional visitor in a very animated conversation, makes you feel like you are living in a canvas of a painting by Monet. The rain droplets seem to unearth the deep secrets of the universe in a language that sounds like a pleasant, musical version of parseltongue. It is in between these conversations between the sky and earth where they share the darkest of secrets that humans breathe. The tea thus becomes a divine drink that witnesses and enhances this sacred ritual.

The monsoons while replenishing the earth with new life, also nourishes our soul as we quietly watch the dance of the sky to a natural Raaga Malhaar. I have always felt it as a tricky way of nature asking us to slow down and meditate on the ethereal beauty of its annual ritual. The cold days of monsoons seem to calm our nerves too along with quenching the thirst of the earth. And that is precisely why, sometimes, when I miss home I listen to the sound of rain and flip through the first pages of The God of Small Things to feel the cold grey monsoon days descend on my being to shower me with the unparalleled feeling of being at home.
