And every results season, I get messages like these.

“The company beat expectations. Why is the stock down?”

Or the opposite.

“The results were terrible. Why is everyone buying?”

They’re good questions. And they all come from the same misunderstanding.

Curious to understand where most investors were getting stuck, I recently asked the Early Edge community one simple question:

“What’s your biggest challenge during results season?”

Sixty-two investors responded and at first, I thought the poll had a very obvious answer. More than half the respondents said their biggest challenge was understanding what was already priced into the stock.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that “what’s priced in” isn’t actually the problem.

It’s the outcome of a much deeper process.

To understand what the market has already priced in, you first have to understand what is driving the business, what management is signalling, how sustainable those drivers are, and whether the investment thesis has actually changed.

That’s why two companies can report completely different numbers and still surprise the market in opposite directions. And once you start looking at earnings through that lens, some seemingly irrational market reactions begin to make a lot more sense.

Let’s look at why.

Bajaj Consumer: The Market Already Knew

On its own, this looks like a textbook strong quarter.

• Sales: up 25%

• EBITDA: up 103%

• Net profit: up 85%

• EPS: up 94%

And yet the stock corrected from roughly ₹670 to ₹525. About 22%, over the following days. If you only looked at the reported numbers, that reaction makes very little sense.

To understand why it happened, you have to ask a different question.

Question 1: What was already priced in before the results came out?

The market had priced in continued revenue acceleration and margin expansion, more quarters like the one just reported. In other words, it expected more quarters like the one just reported.

However, on the Q1 FY27 call, management signalled that this expansion wouldn’t hold going forward.

I had immediately flagged the setup to the Early Edge community the day the correction happened.

The market reacted to that, not to the 103% EBITDA growth showing up on Screener. The market wasn't questioning the quality of the quarter. It was reassessing what the quarter implied for the next few.

And that leads me to the second question I always ask during results season.

Question 2: Is the market reacting to this quarter, or to what this quarter implies about the future?

A strong quarter is only valuable if the drivers behind it are sustainable. In Bajaj Consumer’s case, investors weren’t disputing the reported numbers. They were reassessing whether the margin expansion that powered those numbers could continue.

The stock wasn’t being repriced because of June 2026. It was being repriced because investors had become less confident about what December 2026 and beyond might look like.

That’s the part of earnings season that has to be reasoned through.

The next time you come across a company reporting exceptional numbers, pause before assuming the stock should move higher. Ask yourself:

• What did management actually say about the sustainability of the trend?

• Are the improvements coming from the core business, or from factors that could unwind over the next few quarters?

If Bajaj Consumer taught us that good numbers aren’t always enough, Aequs teaches the opposite lesson. Bad numbers aren’t always enough either.

Here's a company that looked like it had reported a genuinely bad quarter.

Aequs: The Loss That Wasn’t What It Looked Like

Viewed in isolation, Aequs looked like one of those quarters investors would rather forget.

• Revenue grew 55% year-on-year to ₹396 crore

• Operating margin fell from 11% to under 4%

• Net loss held steep at ₹53 crore, against a ₹4 crore profit a year earlier

• EPS remained around minus ₹0.79

At first glance, there wasn't much to like.

Margins compressed sharply. The company slipped back into losses. The stock opened lower as investors digested the results. And yet, something interesting happened.

Over the next few trading sessions, buyers gradually stepped back in and the stock recovered.

Judging by the results alone, that reaction doesn't make much sense. But that's exactly when I stop looking at the headline numbers and ask myself a different question.

Question 3: Has anything materially changed about the investment thesis, or only the headline number?

For Aequs, management’s explanation was specific.

The company had recently commissioned significant new consumer electronics capacity. The depreciation and operating costs from that investment had already started flowing through the P&L, while the revenue from that capacity had not yet caught up.

In simple terms, today's costs had arrived. Tomorrow's revenues hadn't.

Once you understand that, the numbers tell a very different story.

While most investors focused on one weak quarter, management spent much of the call discussing its Vision 2031 and where it believes the business could be over the next five years.

• Consumer segment utilisation targeted to move from roughly 23% toward 40 to 50%

• Consumer segment EBITDA breakeven targeted by Q4 FY27

• Aerospace continuing to grow at 25 to 30%, on top of FY26 revenue that was already up 27%, with EBITDA up 76% and an order book of roughly $889 million

• Long-term ambition of 4 to 6x revenue growth with 18 to 22% EBITDA margins

Whether Aequs ultimately achieves those ambitions is uncertain, and I’d treat the Vision 2031 targets as aspirations rather than forecasts. But that’s not really the point.

Management will always have a narrative. The real question is whether the evidence supports it.

That’s why the final question I ask after every set of results is:

Question 4: Is this issue temporary, or structural?

It sounds similar to the previous question, but it asks something different. The earlier question was about how the market is interpreting the results. This question is about the business itself.

Is this quarters numbers pointing to a fundamental deterioration in the business, or is it simply a temporary noise ?

A structural issue means something about the business model, competitive position, or unit economics has deteriorated.

A temporary issue means the reported numbers are being affected by something with a reasonably identifiable end point, for example, a capex cycle, delayed revenue recognition, or a one-off cost.

Aequs' aerospace business provided a useful cross-check.

While the consumer electronics segment was under pressure, aerospace continued to grow at more than 25%, generated 20%+ ROCE, with order book crossing USD $1 billion.

That doesn't prove the consumer weakness was temporary. But it does suggest the issue was concentrated in one part of the business rather than reflecting a deterioration across the company.

That is the difference between reacting to a quarter and evaluating a business.

The Framework Behind Both Cases

Bajaj Consumer and Aequs look like opposite stories. Good numbers, falling stock. Bad numbers, recovering stock.

But underneath, the same four questions explain both:

1. What was already priced in before the results came out?

2. Is the market reacting to this quarter, or to what it implies about the next few?

3. Has the investment thesis actually changed, or only the headline number?

4. Is the current weakness (or strength) temporary, or structural?

None of these questions guarantee you’ll call the next move correctly. What they do is stop you from making the two most common results-season mistakes. Selling a good business because one quarter looked disappointing on the surface. Or holding a deteriorating one because the headline number still looked fine.

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably realised this article isn’t really about Bajaj Consumer or Aequs. It’s about building a repeatable way of thinking.

These four questions are a small part of a broader process I use, called the EDGE Framework. The framework goes beyond earnings season, but these questions are often where it begins.

The next time one of your companies reports results, keep this checklist nearby.

• Pull up the previous one or two concall transcripts before the new results. What has management already told you to expect?

• When you see the headline growth or margin number, ask what’s driving it. The core business, or a timing shift that will unwind.

• If the result looks bad, check whether the weakness has a known end point, and whether it shows up consistently across the company’s other segments, or only in the one currently under pressure.

• Write down what would change your mind before results day, not after. It’s a lot harder to reason clearly once the stock has already moved 20%.

Markets will always surprise us. Results will always look better, or worse, than the headlines suggest. But if you can consistently ask better questions than the average investor, you’ll consistently make better decisions.

That’s the real edge.

A market spends months going nowhere. Headlines remain negative. Investor sentiment stays cautious. Most people lose interest and move on.

Yet, despite all the pessimism, prices slowly begin grinding higher.

Nothing seems to justify the move. Every rally feels like a temporary bounce. Every dip feels like the start of another correction. Then, months later, once the market has already moved significantly higher, the narrative changes. Suddenly the reasons appear obvious, and the turning point looks easy to identify in hindsight.

This is how major market inflection points often unfold.

Recency bias keeps investors anchored to the last correction. Negativity bias makes bad news feel more important than improving fundamentals. And hindsight bias convinces us that we “should have seen it coming” only after the opportunity has largely passed.

Watching this happen repeatedly led me to a simple question: can we recognise a turning point before it becomes obvious? Not by predicting the future, but by looking for recurring patterns that history leaves behind.

I’m a fundamentals-first investor. My investment decisions are driven by businesses, earnings and industry structure, not charts. But markets move in cycles, and understanding those cycles provides valuable context. History never repeats exactly, but it often rhymes. The catalysts change, yet the sequence of fear, consolidation and expansion looks surprisingly familiar.

That raised another challenge. Dedicated historical data for India’s SME and microcap universe barely exists. Most of these indices were launched only recently, making it difficult to study how previous cycles unfolded.

So I searched for the closest historical proxy and the Nifty Midcap 150 goes back to 2005. While it isn’t a perfect substitute, many companies that qualified as midcaps back then would likely be classified as microcaps today. It offered nearly two decades of market history, and a chance to answer a simple question: what usually happens after a long period of consolidation finally comes to an end?

The Trap of Looking at 20 Years All at Once

Pull up the full 20-year chart of the Nifty Midcap 150 and it immediately looks as though the market has run too far.

But long-term charts compress very different market environments into a single picture, and that compression can be misleading. A rally that looks excessive on a 20-year chart can look perfectly normal once you break it into individual cycles.

So, I broke the past twenty years into separate correction and breakout phases, rather than treating the whole period as one continuous trend. The goal wasn’t to find a trading signal. It was to see whether the current setup resembles prior transitions from correction into expansion.

2005–2014: Establishing the Pattern

The first period, from 2005 to 2014, offers a useful baseline because it contains both a normal market cycle and one of the most extraordinary disruptions in modern financial history: the Global Financial Crisis. Looking at both side by side makes it easier to distinguish an ordinary correction from a genuine structural crisis.

Before the GFC, the index moved in a shape that would show up again and again through this study: a sharp breakout, followed by a long consolidation, followed by another sustained advance. The first rally gained roughly 91% over 371 days. That was followed by a 476-day consolidation and a drawdown of around 32%. Once confidence returned, the next breakout delivered another 75% gain in just 140 days.

My interpretation is that corrections are less about deteriorating fundamentals and more about uncertainty. Investors spend months waiting for confirmation that conditions are improving. Once that confidence begins returning, whether through earnings upgrades, improving price action, or a macro catalyst, capital tends to move much faster than it left. Markets usually spend longer doubting than believing.

The GFC broke this rhythm entirely. Instead of a typical correction followed by recovery, it became a full-blown structural crisis: a drawdown of nearly 72% that stretched out to roughly 2,310 days, well over six years, before the next breakout arrived in 2014. Investors who accumulated quality businesses at deeply depressed valuations were eventually rewarded, but recognising that opportunity in real time was extraordinarily difficult.

The biggest lesson wasn’t the size of the rally or the depth of the drawdown. It was that genuine crises behave very differently from ordinary corrections. Most corrections eventually resolve themselves through improving fundamentals and returning confidence. Structural crises reset the cycle entirely. For investors, distinguishing between the two matters far more than trying to identify the exact market bottom.

2014 -2018 : A Cleaner Test

The post-2014 period provides a much cleaner test of the pattern. Unlike the previous decade, it wasn’t dominated by a once-in-a-generation financial crisis. Instead, it shows how the market behaved through a more typical business cycle.

Once again, the sequence looked remarkably familiar. A sustained rally was followed by an extended consolidation before the next leg higher emerged. The initial breakout gained around 48% over 329 days. That was followed by a 483-day consolidation and a relatively shallow 16% drawdown. The next breakout then delivered another 62% advance over the following 567 days.

The more interesting observation wasn’t the magnitude of the rally. It was how resilient the trend proved to be when genuinely bad news arrived. Demonetisation was one of the biggest economic shocks of the decade and it created genuine uncertainty around earnings, liquidity, and growth. Yet the broader market trend recovered surprisingly quickly, and investors who bought even after the demonetisation-related top still captured roughly 40% in the move that followed.

Demonetisation unquestionably mattered. But what stood out was how quickly the market moved past it. The broader cycle stayed intact underneath the noise, which is often the harder thing to see while you’re living through the headlines.

2018–2022: A Cycle Stretched by an Extraordinary Shock

After the two-legged breakout that followed 2014, the market moved into another consolidation, this time drawing down about 23% over 770 days. On its own, that was roughly in line with what the earlier cycles had already shown: a long correction eventually giving way to renewed strength.

However, COVID arrived. It serves as an important test precisely because it was an extraordinary shock, one with no real precedent in this dataset. The correction that had begun around 2018 didn’t reset into a new cycle. Instead, it stretched to around 1,015 days, while the peak-to-trough decline nearly doubled to about 45%, before the market finally broke to new highs.

Once the recovery took hold, the familiar pattern reappeared. The index advanced about 62% over the following 335 days, echoing the same sequence seen in earlier cycles: a sharp expansion after an extended period of consolidation.

The lesson isn’t that shocks can be predicted or ignored. It’s that even extraordinary events don’t necessarily invalidate an underlying market cycle. In this case, the cycle bent under the weight of COVID. It didn’t break. Once the shock passed, the market resumed the same expansionary pattern that had followed previous consolidations.

2022–2026: Where We Stand Today

The next cycle looked familiar. Following the post-COVID rally, the market entered another consolidation. Then another external shock arrived: the Russia-Ukraine war, accompanied by a surge in global inflation. This correction was shorter, 581 days, with a shallower 22% drawdown. Once new highs were made, the market advanced 82% over 490 days.

Since around 2024, the index has been consolidating again, this time for about 637 days, with a drawdown near 23%. As of the latest weekly data, the Nifty Midcap 150 has broken to a fresh all-time high and historically, moves like this have often marked the point where a long consolidation transitions into a new expansionary phase.

Of course, a new high isn’t evidence that history must repeat itself. Every cycle has had its own catalysts, valuations, and risks. But when a breakout follows a prolonged consolidation, it’s usually worth paying attention. Whether this cycle follows the same path remains uncertain, but the historical setup is strikingly similar.

Looking across nearly two decades, one thing stands out: the sequence has stayed broadly the same even as the catalysts changed. A prolonged consolidation, a breakout to new highs, then a period of stronger-than-expected gains. The two real exceptions, the GFC and COVID, didn’t break that pattern. They just stretched it further than usual.

What the Averages Actually Show

Individual cycles are informative, but looking at the averages helps reveal what is consistently true across different market environments.

Excluding the Global Financial Crisis, the average correction across the other six cycles, including COVID, lasted roughly 660 days, with an average peak-to-trough drawdown of 27.1%.

Including the GFC pushes those averages to around 896 days and 33.5%, highlighting just how much an extraordinary crisis can distort long-term statistics.

The current consolidation, at roughly 637 days and a 23% drawdown, sits surprisingly close to the non-GFC average. More importantly, the index has recently broken to a fresh all-time high, a condition that has historically marked the transition from consolidation to expansion.

The breakout phases themselves tend to be shorter than the corrections before them, averaging around 364 days, with an average advance near 66% (median just under 63%).

My interpretation is straightforward. Institutional investors rarely deploy capital the moment conditions improve. They build positions gradually as evidence accumulates: stronger earnings, improving guidance, better price action, and rising confidence. That process tends to compress buying into a relatively short window, which helps explain why expansion phases are often much faster than the lengthy periods of consolidation that precede them.

The implication follows directly. If expansion phases typically last only about a year, waiting for complete certainty before acting risks missing a meaningful portion of the move. By the time the trend feels obvious, much of the repricing may already have occurred.

If the current setup ultimately follows the broad historical pattern, the expansion phase may once again prove much shorter than the consolidation that came before it. That’s why I think preparation matters more than prediction. Investors don’t need to know exactly what will happen next; they need a framework for recognising when probabilities begin shifting in their favour.

Across nearly two decades of data, one feature stands out more than any other: markets spend far longer creating opportunities than exploiting them. Consolidations are slow and frustrating, but breakouts are comparatively brief.

Is This Structural, or Just Pattern-Matching?

The obvious criticism of any historical analysis is that it’s easy to find patterns after the fact. That’s why I don’t rely on market cycles alone. I look for independent evidence that today’s environment is behaving similarly.

Today, several independent signals are pointing in the same direction:

• Small- and micro-cap indices have begun making new highs even while the headline Nifty remains range-bound.

• FII flows have recently turned positive on a rolling four-week basis for the first time in a while.

• SIP inflows remain resilient.

• Recent geopolitical shocks, including a short bout of US-Iran tension, have been absorbed within a couple of trading days rather than triggering sustained weakness, echoing how the market handled the 2016 demonetisation shock.

However, none of these proves a new expansion has begun. Markets rarely offer that kind of certainty. A genuinely external shock on the scale of COVID or the GFC could still stretch the current consolidation well past its historical average. But when several independent indicators begin aligning with the historical setup, I think it’s worth paying attention. None of this means the next 12 months will look exactly like the last six cycles. It simply shifts my prior probabilities.

Where the Index-Level View Runs Out

Of course, even if history repeats at the index level, that doesn’t mean every microcap will perform well. Index cycles tell us when opportunities become more favourable. They don’t tell us which businesses deserve capital. That’s still a bottom-up exercise requiring governance analysis, financial quality, and valuation discipline, and the risks (thin liquidity, weak disclosure, concentrated businesses) are real and don’t show up in the index-level data at all.

That’s exactly why I built a separate 20 factor framework for evaluating microcaps. History can tell us when opportunity is becoming more favourable. It can’t tell us which businesses deserve capital. That’s a different problem altogether.

A Closing Thought

I spent a long time studying these cycles. Mapping them out turned out to be the easy part, but understanding how investors actually behave while living through one turned out to be much harder.

The ability to stay patient during a long drawdown, and resist FOMO once a trend becomes obvious, often matters more than fundamentals or technicals alone.

Before acting, there are two questions I think are worth asking. What would need to happen for this thesis to be wrong? And is your portfolio positioned for the next cycle, or still anchored to the last one?

History doesn’t predict the future. It simply tells us what has tended to happen when markets looked like this before. The evidence isn’t conclusive. Markets never are. But if there’s one lesson history keeps teaching, it’s that markets often still feel uncertain even after the biggest opportunities have begun unfolding.

The real advantage isn’t forecasting what comes next. It’s having a process in place before the future becomes obvious.

Now, to the framework itself.

You heard about them early. The story made sense. You could see why the sector was going to do well. Maybe you bought in. Maybe you watched from the sidelines and then bought in when it started moving.

And for a while, everything felt right. Prices were rising. Management commentary was optimistic. Every news article reinforced the thesis. The stocks kept moving, and it felt like the theme itself was doing the work.

Then something changed.

The excitement faded. A few quarters passed without much happening. Some stocks drifted sideways. Others gave back most of the move. A few just quietly went nowhere for years.

But here’s what made it genuinely confusing: a handful of companies from the exact same theme, operating in the exact same industry, riding the exact same tailwind kept going 5x or 10x or sometimes more.

Same story. Very different outcomes.

I spent a long time trying to understand why. Soon, I realised the answer was not simply finding the best business in the theme, the cheapest valuation, or the management team with the strongest track record. What mattered was whether earnings were genuinely accelerating, whether that acceleration was supported by improving business economics, and whether the market had underestimated how many quarters of improvement were still ahead.

That distinction matters more than most investors realise. It is also the basis of the process I use each results season to identify businesses that may be entering an earnings inflection before the market has fully priced it in.

What The Market Actually Rewards And How PEAD Works

Have you ever seen this pattern?

A company that has been growing at 8–10% suddenly reports 30%, 40% growth. Margins expand. Profit grows faster than revenue and the stock reacts immediately, up 20%, 30% in a few sessions.

Most retail investors see that move and conclude they’re too late.

But here’s the part most people miss. That initial reaction is rarely the whole story.

Think about who actually moves stock prices over months and years. It’s not retail investors buying ₹50,000 or ₹5 lakh worth of shares. It’s the institutions: mutual funds, insurance companies, foreign portfolio investors, allocating crores into a position. And when an institution decides a business has genuinely changed, the buying is large, sustained, and slow. It doesn’t happen in one session.

And that is exactly why the price adjustment takes time. Institutions see the same quarterly result you do, but building conviction and accumulating a meaningful position is rarely immediate. Models need to be updated, management needs to be assessed, and portfolio decisions often involve internal debate and approval. That process can take weeks or months. If the earnings improvement continues to surprise on the upside, institutional buying can gradually build over subsequent quarters.

That is what creates the drift. The stock does not keep moving simply because of the excitement around the first result. It moves because, over the following weeks and months, more investors, especially large institutions, begin to recognise that something in the business may have genuinely changed.

This phenomenon is called Post-Earnings Announcement Drift, or PEAD. But the label matters less than the idea behind it.

The chart below shows three different stocks starting from the same price, but moving in very different directions over time. The difference is not the first result; it is whether each company continues to beat, meet, or miss expectations over the following quarters.

For retail investors, the edge is not speed. It is the willingness to do the work after the first confirmation, understand the thesis, and form a view on the potential runway while others are still debating whether the move is already over.

Not All Earnings Growth Creates Equal Value

Every multibagger begins with some form of catalyst.

Behind most major investment themes, there is usually a recurring trigger: policy support, new capacity, import substitution, market-share gains, product launches, formalisation, export opportunity, or a shift in industry structure.

Pick any sector that is attracting attention today and you will usually find one or more of these forces at work beneath the surface.

Take Aditya Infotech. Restrictions on Chinese CCTV cameras created a clear opening, and the company’s market share reportedly moved from 25% to 45%.

Or take Dixon. The PLI scheme was announced in 2019, but it took roughly two years for capacity to be built, qualified, and commissioned before the benefit became visible in the financials.

Understanding the scale and timing of the catalyst matters.

But a catalyst is only a possibility until it starts showing up in revenue, margins, and earnings. Investors often buy into a policy or theme when it is announced, then spend years waiting for the numbers to catch up. By the time frustration sets in and they exit, the actual earnings inflection may be beginning.

That is where PEAD becomes useful. It shifts the focus away from when a catalyst is announced and towards when it begins to translate into better reported numbers.

But even then, there is another important question to answer: what kind of growth is it?

A 40% profit increase driven by a temporary commodity-price move is very different from a 40% increase driven by higher volumes, improving utilisation, and margin expansion. The market eventually recognises the difference. The opportunity lies in recognising it before the market does.

The question I come back to every time is simple: Where is this growth coming from, and is that likely to remain intact over the next few years?

Note: Valuation still matters, of course. Even a genuine earnings inflection can be a poor investment if the market has already priced in too much of the upside.

The aim is to eliminate most results and identify the small number of companies where something may be changing beneath the surface. From there, I build a tracking list and decide which names deserve a deeper look.

I’ll walk through the process using Balaji Amines, which came up on my screen in exactly this way during the last results season.

Stage One: Is there a genuine earnings change? (Steps 1–3)

Step 1: Spot the acceleration

First, I start by scanning the quarterly-results page for companies where EBITDA and PAT are growing materially faster than revenue. That gap often signals that something is changing in the economics of the business, not just the top line.

As a starting point, I look for revenue growth of 20% or more year on year. But the more important question is whether growth is accelerating versus earlier quarters. A company moving from flat or declining growth to 20%+ is often more interesting than one that has been growing at that rate for years. The market often responds to rate of change.

If only PAT is accelerating, I check what is driving it. The improvement could be operational, financial, or tax-led, and each has very different implications for sustainability.

Balaji Amines stood out for this reason. Revenue grew just 12% year on year, which was unremarkable on its own. But EBITDA and PAT both grew around 58% in the same quarter. That gap was enough to make me stop scrolling and look closer.

Step 2: Study the quarterly P&L trend

The next thing I check is whether this is the beginning of the acceleration or whether the market has already seen several quarters of it.

The first or second quarter of a genuine turnaround is often where the risk-reward is most interesting. By the fifth or sixth quarter, expectations may already have adjusted.

I look at the last few quarters and ask: Is growth broad-based, or is it simply benefiting from a low base? Are margins improving alongside revenue? And does this quarter represent a real break from the recent trend?

With Balaji Amines, the answer was worth exploring. The company had gone through nearly three years of year-on-year declines before this quarter. That does not prove a turnaround, but it suggested that this could possibly be an early sign of one.

Step 3: Understand the annual P&L trend

Quarterly numbers can tell you that something has changed. The annual P&L helps you understand where that change sits in the larger cycle.

I usually zoom out over eight to ten years and ask whether the current improvement is simply a recovery from depressed earnings or evidence of a new, more durable level of profitability. The answer also depends on the type of business. A cyclical company recovering from a weak part of the cycle should be assessed very differently from a consumer business, a niche manufacturer, or a company with recurring revenues.

The annual view helps separate a cyclical rebound from a more durable change in the earnings base.

Balaji Amines is a classic example. The company saw unusually strong profitability between FY21 and FY23, helped by post-COVID disruption in the chemical supply chain, before entering a multi-year down-cycle. EBITDA margin peaked at 29% in FY21 and remained elevated at 26–27% through FY23, before falling to 17% in FY25. Even after the recent improvement, FY26 EBITDA margin of 19% remained well below those earlier levels.

That does not automatically mean margins will recover. Chemicals remain cyclical, and the earlier peak was supported by an unusually favourable supply-demand environment. But it does mean the business is being assessed from a depressed earnings base rather than from peak profitability. The key question is whether the current recovery is supported by improving utilisation, product mix, and new capacity, rather than simply a short-term improvement in the cycle.

Stage Two: Can the business support it? (Steps 4–6)

Step 4: Balance sheet strength

Before getting carried away by the growth story, I want to know whether the company can fund that growth without putting the balance sheet under pressure.

I look at debt, interest coverage, any history of equity dilution, and how trade receivables are moving. Growth funded through heavy borrowing or repeated dilution comes with a different risk profile. The same is true when receivables rise much faster than sales. It may simply reflect a temporary working-capital requirement, but it can also point to weaker bargaining power or revenue that has been booked before the cash has actually come in.

With Balaji Amines, the balance-sheet picture was relatively clean. The company had not raised equity capital, with growth largely funded through internal accruals. On a standalone basis, it was essentially debt-free at the time of the scan.

Step 5: Capital deployment

This is where I try to understand what the company has done with the money it has invested, and whether that investment is close to producing returns.

I look for recent capex, whether the company is generating cash (CFO), and whether there is a clear path for the new capacity to start contributing to revenue. Some of the best earnings inflections come after a long build-out phase, when new capacity finally starts filling up and fixed costs are spread across a larger revenue base.

The P&L shows what the company reported. The cash-flow statement helps show whether those profits are translating into cash.

In Balaji Amines’ case, the large fixed-asset additions visible in investing cash flows stood out. That does not guarantee future growth, but it suggests the company may be nearing the end of a significant capex cycle.

The next question is whether the recent improvement in revenue and margins is already being driven by this new capacity, or whether it is mainly the result of a better chemical pricing environment. That distinction matters. Capex-led growth can create a more durable earnings runway if utilisation rises, while commodity-led growth may fade when prices normalise.

Step 6: ROCE

A high ROCE is good. But an ROCE that is improving can be even more interesting.

In the Multibagger DNA study, it was found that companies with ROCE improving for two consecutive years were nearly three times more likely to become future 5x stocks than companies where ROCE was already high but broadly stable.

So while looking at ROCE, I do not just ask what the ROCE is today. I ask what could make it meaningfully higher two years from now.

Balaji Amines illustrates the point. Its ROCE had fallen from the high-30s during the earlier cycle peak to roughly 11%. On the surface, that does not look attractive. But the more relevant question is whether returns can recover as the new plants begin contributing.

If the new capacity ramps up as expected and utilisation improves, ROCE could move meaningfully higher from here. That is the kind of change that can support a re-rating.

Stage Three: Is the market beginning to validate it? (Steps 7–8)

Step 7: Institutional ownership

Institutional ownership is not a buy signal. But it can help me understand where a company sits in its discovery cycle.

Low FII and DII ownership alongside improving earnings can mean the business is still under-researched. If the earnings improvement continues, institutional participation can become an additional source of demand for a limited free float.

But low institutional ownership is not automatically positive. Sometimes institutions have simply identified risks that the market has not fully appreciated. So I do not ask, “Why do institutions not own this?” I ask, “What would need to change for institutions to become interested?”

With Balaji Amines, this is one area where I remain cautious. At a market capitalisation of roughly ₹6,000–7,000 crore, the company is large enough for serious institutional participation. Yet I could not identify any institution with a meaningful holding in the company from the shareholding disclosures available on Screener. That does not automatically invalidate the thesis. Promoter ownership is high, the free float is limited, and the recent down-cycle may have kept institutions away.

Still, it is a question I want answered before becoming more confident. Over the next one or two quarters, I will be watching whether the earnings recovery sustains and whether institutional ownership begins to improve.

Step 8: Price action

Finally, price action is the final confirmation layer. It does not replace the fundamental thesis, but it can help with timing and risk management. A strong chart cannot fix weak economics.

I am cautious when a stock has already doubled before the result. But when it reacts well to the numbers, consolidates, and holds its gains while earnings continue to improve, that is usually more constructive than a sharp one-day move followed by immediate selling.

With Balaji Amines, the stock had broken above its 50-day and 150-day moving averages after a long base, supported by rising volume. That suggested the market was beginning to recognise the improving picture.

If the fundamentals appear strong but the stock has not moved at all, I do not automatically treat that as an opportunity.

I ask what I may be missing: perhaps the market sees a risk before it becomes obvious in the reported numbers, or perhaps the valuation already reflects a recovery that has yet to show up in the financials.

Note: This is where the accumulation strategy and the broader EDGE framework come into play. The aim is not to buy simply because a business looks inexpensive or because the numbers have improved for one quarter. It is to understand the business and build conviction gradually as the evidence strengthens across earnings, management execution, valuation, and price behaviour.

Stage Four: Decision (Step 9)

This is the most important step because the framework is designed to reject far more companies than it shortlists.

You do not need fifty ideas. You need a smaller group of businesses every quarter where the earnings surprise, business quality, balance sheet, and market behaviour begin to support the same conclusion. Most companies will fail somewhere along the way.

In Balaji Amines’ case, the early evidence was encouraging: a possible earnings turnaround after a three-year down-cycle, margins still below historical levels with room to recover, new capacity nearing completion, a clean balance sheet, and constructive price action.

That was enough to add the company to my research tracking list, with specific milestones to monitor over the next two to four quarters.

Common Traps: When a Strong Quarter Is Not Enough

This framework only works if the earnings acceleration reflects a real and sustainable improvement in the business.

The risk is mistaking one strong quarter for a lasting change in earning power. Here are some common traps investors often miss when applying this strategy.

One-off income. Exceptional gains, asset sales, insurance claims, or reversals of earlier provisions can make reported profit look far better without changing the underlying business. If EPS jumps sharply, I first check whether there is an operating explanation for it. PAT growth should broadly reconcile with EBITDA and operating cash flow.

Commodity price spikes. Temporary shortages can push up prices and margins quickly. The problem is that both can reverse just as fast once supply normalises. I try to understand whether EBITDA per unit is improving because the business is becoming more efficient, or simply because the pricing environment has turned favourable. If margins are far above their normal range, a low PE can be a warning rather than an opportunity.

Accounting changes. A change in depreciation policy, revenue recognition, or provisioning can make a quarter appear stronger than it really is. Before drawing conclusions, check the notes to accounts and make sure the comparison with the previous year is genuinely like-for-like.

Rising receivables. Revenue growth matters less if customers are taking longer to pay. When receivables are rising faster than sales, I want to understand why. It could be a temporary working-capital issue, but it can also point to weaker bargaining power, aggressive revenue recognition, or lower-quality growth.

Weak cash conversion. Reported profit without cash flow deserves more scrutiny. The P&L tells you what the company earned on paper. The cash-flow statement tells you whether that profit is actually being collected. A genuine improvement in earnings should eventually show up in operating cash flow.

Poor management execution. Markets do not reward numbers they do not trust. If management is vague, avoids difficult questions, repeatedly misses timelines, or has a poor record on capital allocation, even a strong earnings surprise may not receive the valuation it appears to deserve.

Takeaway: The scan helps identify companies worth investigating. Recognising the traps helps prevent a temporary earnings spike from being mistaken for a durable improvement in the business. A company should clear both before it earns a place on the research tracking list.

That is the discipline behind the entire process: knowing what deserves more attention, and being equally comfortable walking away from what does not.

What I’d Want You to Take From This

A catalyst tells you where to look. It does not tell you what to buy.

The real work begins after the result: working out whether the change is structural or temporary, understanding how early you are in the earnings acceleration, testing the quality of the growth, and identifying what needs to be confirmed over the next few quarters.

That is what the nine-step scan is designed to help with.

Most of the time, it rejects far more companies than it shortlists. That is exactly how it should work.

The aim is not to act on every strong result. It is to build a process for spotting situations where expectations may still be too low, and then asking the right questions before the market has fully caught up.

What changed? Why did it change? Can it continue? What would prove the thesis wrong? And has the market already priced it in?

A strong quarterly result is not the conclusion. It is the starting point for deeper research and a disciplined process for deciding what deserves your attention next.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth most investors learn the hard way:

Imagine two companies with the same return on capital, operating in the same sector with the same tailwind, and having the same valuation and balance sheet. One of them becomes a 5x stock, while the other doesn’t move.

If you’ve been investing for a while, you’ve probably seen this happen. It’s frustrating because everything you’ve learned says they should perform equally, but they don’t.

The difference often lives in places most investors never study seriously: how management communicates, whether institutional discovery has begun, what type of business it actually is beneath the surface metrics, and whether your process can identify these signals before the market fully prices them in.

Part 1 focused on what you can screen for.

Part 2 focuses on what you can’t.

And in many cases, that’s where the difference between a good investment and a great one begins.

Part 4: Management Language Quality: The Signal Nobody Screens For

If there is one thing I come back to after reading thousands of pages of annual reports and sitting through hundreds of concalls, it's this: management language is a dataset. The specificity with which a promoter or CFO speaks about their own business tells you more than the P&L does.

Vague language isn’t modesty, it’s a sign that management doesn’t have a clear grasp of their own business.

The 246-stock study beautifully formalises this into a five-level hierarchy (below). The higher the level, the more predictive of future performance.

The research goes on to identify 10 green flag patterns and 5 red flag patterns in management language. Here are the ones I find most actionable, cross-referenced with what I’ve observed personally.

Green Flags Worth Memorising

1. Capital non-allocation clarity: Look at how multibagger CEOs talk about opportunities they rejected, and a clear pattern emerges. The best management teams don’t just explain what they will do. They explain what they will not do.

Eicher Motors rejected multiple acquisition opportunities between 2015 and 2020. Ajanta Pharma repeatedly told investors, “We will not go outside healthcare.” Vinati Organics focused only on molecules where it could become a global top-three player. Tata Elxsi reinforced that it was a design-led company, not a headcount-led one, and would not pursue growth for growth’s sake.

None of these statements sound particularly exciting, but they reveal something far more important than ambition: discipline.

Capital allocation is not just about deciding where to invest. It is equally about deciding where not to invest and staying within your circle of competence.

2. Capacity ahead of demand. This is rare and highly significant. When management says they’re adding capacity before demand arrives and can explain specifically why, they’re signalling either take-or-pay customer commitments or proprietary demand visibility that the market doesn’t have.

Eicher added the Trichy plant before Royal Enfield waitlists exploded. APL Apollo invested in distribution before hollow sections became a mainstream category in India.

Most companies wait for demand to become obvious before investing. By then, they are already behind. The best management teams do the opposite. They invest before the evidence becomes visible to everyone else.

The market often mistakes preparation for risk until demand arrives. And when it does, the companies that prepared early usually capture the largest share of the opportunity.

3. Competitive displacement with a named target: One of the easiest ways to separate ambition from execution is to study how management talks about competitors. Average management teams talk about "import substitution" or "market share gains." The companies that went on to become 5x stocks were often far more specific. They named the competitors they were displacing, explained their qualification progress, and articulated why they were winning.

Vinati Organics openly discussed displacing BASF and Songwon in antioxidants. Borosil Renewables spoke specifically about replacing Chinese solar glass. KEI Industries discussed taking share from established international cable manufacturers.

That level of specificity is a moat signal.

It is difficult to fake competitive intelligence. Management teams that can clearly explain who they are taking share from and why usually understand their market far better than those speaking in broad industry clichés.

4. Order book composition, not just the total. Many companies proudly announce a large order book, but far fewer explain what is actually inside it.

CG Power didn't just report an ₹8,000 crore order book. Management explained how much came from transformers versus industrial motors, how much would convert into revenue over the next 18 months, and how much came from exports.

That level of disclosure tells investors three important things at once:

• Revenue visibility

• Margin quality

• Business mix

More importantly, it signals managements operational maturity and how well they understand their business.

Red Flags That Show Up Before the Damage

1. External attribution without internal accountability.

“Margins compressed due to global commodity prices.”

“Demand slowed because of macro uncertainty.”

“Competition intensified.”

The research found this language in 85% of stocks that initially looked multibagger-capable but ultimately disappointed over the following two years.

Every company faces external pressures. What separates exceptional businesses is the quality of their response. When management spends more time explaining the problem than explaining what they're doing about it, ask for it explicitly during the concall.

2. Guidance withdrawal. The study documents 12 specific stocks where guidance withdrawal preceded 30–50% stock underperformance over 6–18 months.

When management can no longer guide its own business, it often signals one of two things: weaker customer visibility than investors realise, or a business model with more uncertainty than the valuation multiple implies.

Markets can forgive weak numbers, but they rarely forgive disappearing visibility.

3. Unrelated diversification at peak earnings. This is one of the oldest capital allocation mistakes in the market. Management at 50–80x PE with 40%+ ROCE announces entry into a “complementary” business.

HEG announced electrode capacity expansion at ROCE of 143%, the textbook peaking signal. Peak PE is when management feels most invincible. It’s also when they make the worst capital allocation decisions.

4. Working capital deterioration described as “temporary.”

One of the most dangerous phrases in investing is:

“We expect normalisation in the next two quarters.”

A rise in debtor days from 60 to 85 is often accompanied by receivables growing faster than revenue. Management usually explains this as a temporary customer-driven issue and assures investors that working capital will normalise shortly.

Investors should be cautious. Extended credit terms rarely signal temporary strength. More often, they reflect weakening bargaining power and a gradual deterioration in business quality.

The research found CFO-to-PAT below 0.7x to be a useful quantitative confirmation of this trend.

In fact, nine companies in the dataset used similar language two to three quarters before reporting a significant earnings miss.

When working capital starts deteriorating, pay less attention to management’s timeline and more attention to the direction of travel.

One Concall Habit Worth Building

One of the most useful suggestions from the research is to start every conference call with the CFO’s remarks rather than the CEO’s. That is because CEOs tell the story and CFOs tell you the numbers behind the story.

Then compare what management said two quarters ago with what actually happened. Executives rarely retract ambitious statements explicitly. More often, they simply stop talking about them.

That omission is data.

Part 5: The Institutional Discovery Curve: Where You Are in the Cycle

A great business does not become a multibagger the day its fundamentals improve. It becomes a multibagger when enough investors notice.

One of the clearest findings from the study was that multibaggers tend to follow a remarkably consistent ownership journey. Across sectors, market cycles, and business models, the pattern kept repeating.

The business improved first. Institutional investors arrived later. The rerating happened somewhere in between.

When combined FII and DII ownership is below 10%, a stock is often structurally undiscovered. Analyst coverage is limited, institutional participation is sparse, and the shareholder base is dominated by retail investors. At this stage, the market is often valuing the company based on its past rather than its future.

As the business continues to execute, institutional ownership begins to rise. As institutional investors enter, research coverage expands, and the company starts appearing on more investor watchlists. As ownership moves from the 0–10% band into the 10–20% range, the rerating often begins.

The research identified five distinct stages of institutional discovery. The table below captures the different stages of the discovery cycle and their typical investment implications.

KEI Industries is one of the cleanest examples of this curve playing out in real time.

In March 2017, FII ownership in KEI was 4.18%. Combined institutional ownership (FII + DII) was around 23%, with DIIs already present but FIIs essentially absent. Then the institutional ownership started moving up.

By March 2019, FII ownership had reached 10.84% and by March 2021, it crossed 18%. By March 2024, FIIs alone owned 31% of the company. Combined FII + DII today sits above 53%, fully institutionalised.

Now look at what the price did during the same window. From roughly Rs 100 in mid-2016 to over Rs 5,000 today. Approximately a 50x move over the institutional discovery cycle. By the time the stock is "discovered," half of the returns are already in the price.

Part 6: The 7 Archetypes: Getting This Wrong Is the Most Expensive Mistake

One of the most important findings from the 246-stock study was that multibaggers do not all look alike. They emerge from different business models, operate under different economics, and create shareholder value in very different ways.

The study identified seven recurring archetypes of multibagger businesses. But identifying the archetype is only the first step. The harder and far more valuable skill is knowing which valuation framework to apply to each one.

Because the same valuation can mean completely different things across business types.

A 35x PE may be perfectly reasonable for a platform business like CDSL and dangerously expensive for a cyclical commodity business like HEG.

The table below captures the seven multibagger archetypes identified in the study.

If there is one table to take away from this entire two-part series, this is it.

The purpose of this framework is not classification. It is valuation. Because most investing mistakes happen when the right business is analysed through the wrong lens.

To illustrate this, let’s look at two of the most common valuation traps identified in the study.

Pattern 1: The Trap of “Cheap PE” on Peak Earnings

This is one of the most common and expensive mistake.

Take HEG in 2018.

Graphite electrode prices had surged, profitability was at record levels, and reported earnings looked extraordinary. At around 5x PE, the stock appeared cheap on almost every screener.

Many investors stopped their analysis there.

The mistake wasn’t the PE. The mistake was the earnings. The market was valuing HEG on peak-cycle profits and assuming those profits were sustainable. They weren’t.

As graphite electrode prices normalised, earnings collapsed. The seemingly cheap valuation disappeared, and the stock lost more than 70% from its peak.

The lesson is simple.

The mistake wasn’t buying a 5x PE stock. The mistake was assuming the “E” in the PE was sustainable.

In cyclical businesses, earnings are highest when the cycle is strongest. Ironically, that is often when future returns are weakest.

A low PE at peak earnings is frequently a warning sign, not a bargain.

Pattern 2: The Trap of “Expensive PE” on Trough Earnings

The mirror image of the commodity trap and the reason many investors miss multibaggers.

In early 2023, BSE traded at roughly 35–40x trailing earnings. Most investors looked at it and said “too expensive, exchanges don’t grow that fast.” The market eventually proved otherwise.

BSE was not a traditional business. It was a platform business with a derivatives franchise that was just beginning to scale. Revenue growth was accelerating, operating margins were expanding rapidly, and incremental revenue required very little additional capital.

The trailing PE of 40x looked terrifying. The forward earnings, 12–18 months out, made the same stock look cheap. And as derivatives volumes exploded, operating leverage kicked in.

The result was extraordinary.

BSE rose from roughly ₹600 in early 2023 to more than ₹5,000 within two years. Investors who refused to pay 40x earnings missed a near 9x move.

And here is the counter-intuitive part. The PE didn’t compress as the stock rose. It went higher, peaking above 100x in 2024, before settling back to 50–70x as earnings finally caught up. That’s how platform businesses work. You pay a high PE today because the operating leverage closes the gap tomorrow.

The lesson here is that a high PE is not always a sign of overvaluation.

Sometimes it is a sign that the market is anticipating earnings growth that has not yet appeared in reported numbers. The framework reflects this reality. Platform businesses with high ROCE, strong network effects, and significant operating leverage often deserve materially higher valuation multiples than traditional businesses.

The biggest winners rarely look cheap on current earnings. They look expensive until future earnings catch up.

Key Takeaway: The PE Ratio Doesn’t Tell the Story. The Business Model Does.

HEG and BSE looked completely different on the surface. One traded at 5x earnings and looked cheap. The other traded at 40x earnings and looked expensive.

Yet the investor who bought the “cheap” stock lost money, while the investor who bought the “expensive” stock made nearly 9x.

Why?

Because valuation is never just about the multiple. It’s about the durability and trajectory of the earnings behind that multiple.

Part 7: The Convergence Formula: Final Checklist

After studying 246 multibaggers across multiple market cycles, one conclusion became difficult to ignore: no single factor consistently predicted a 5x outcome. Not ROCE, not valuation, not sector tailwinds, and not institutional ownership.

The biggest winners emerged when multiple independent signals aligned at the same time. Think of it as a convergence.

Most stocks satisfy one or two of these conditions, some satisfy three, but very few satisfy all five. When all five converged, the odds of a successful outcome improved dramatically.

1. ROCE is inflecting upward
Not just high, but improving alongside margins and operating leverage.

2. Management communication is becoming more specific
Expansion plans are backed by defined timelines, capacity details, customer additions, and measurable execution milestones.

3. A structural tailwind exists
The business is benefiting from a multi-year industry shift such as policy support, formalisation, import substitution, digitisation, premiumisation, defence spending, or manufacturing localisation.

4. Institutional discovery is still early
Combined FII and DII ownership remains below 20%, suggesting the business is improving before it becomes widely owned.

5. Valuation still leaves room for rerating
The market has not fully priced the opportunity. In the study, this often appeared as a PEG below 1x or a market capitalisation that remained small relative to the business’s long-term opportunity size.

When all five converge, the historical probability of a 5x return improves dramatically. The pattern repeated across sectors, market cycles, and market-cap buckets, helping identify businesses before the broader market recognised their potential.

What This Study Really Taught Me

When I started going through the 246 multibaggers study, I wanted to find the one factor that consistently separated the biggest winners from the rest of the market.

I didn’t find one. What I found instead were patterns.

The biggest winners came from different sectors, different market cycles, and different business models. Some were compounders. Some were turnarounds. Some benefited from policy shifts, while others rode industry cycles. Yet despite these differences, the same themes kept appearing. Improving business economics, focused management teams, structural industry tailwinds, early institutional discovery, and valuations that still left room for the market to change its mind.

The lesson is not that these factors guarantee success. The lesson is that they improve the odds. And in investing, improving the odds is often enough.

It is important to acknowledge the limitations of this research. This is a retrospective study, and survivorship bias is real. There were companies that displayed many of the same characteristics and still failed to deliver exceptional returns.

Let me be honest. Most “multibagger frameworks” are built backwards. Someone studies 10 or 15 winning stocks, identifies a few common traits, and then retrofits a narrative that sounds brilliant in hindsight.

→ This company had high ROCE.
→ That company had low debt.
→ This stock was available at 12 PE.

All that sounds logical, but markets are rarely that clean.

Every 5x stock looks obvious after the move is over. What actually matters is understanding what those businesses looked like before the market fully recognised them, across different sectors, different cycles, and very different macro environments.

That’s why this research stands out.

When one of our Early Edge members, who prefers to remain anonymous, spent months studying 246 stocks that delivered 5x returns in under two years, I was engrossed analyzing it.

The study covered 23 sectors and multiple market cycles from 2013 to 2025, using data from company annual reports, conference calls, Screener.in, NSE and BSE filings, and analysis assisted by AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT.

I read the entire document from cover to cover, but not because I was looking for a magic formula to find multibaggers. But because I wanted to test many of my assumptions and understanding, and to see whether the ideas and the EDGE framework I teach my fellow members actually hold up.

And they did.

In fact, what stood out to me wasn’t just the patterns themselves, but how often the same underlying principles kept repeating:

• sector leadership shifts,

• ROCE inflections,

• operating leverage,

• capex cycles,

• institutional discovery,

• and management communication quality.

Some of these things confirmed what I already believed from studying markets for years. Others helped me better understand ideas that I had only vaguely sensed before.

This article is an attempt to bring those observations together.

“The market doesn’t reward what you found. It rewards when you found it.”

That one line captures a crucial truth about multibagger investing, one that many investors never fully understand.

You can identify the right company, with the right management, operating in the right sector, backed by the right long-term tailwinds and still end up generating ordinary returns if you arrive too late.

Because markets don’t just reward quality. They reward inflection. They reward improving expectations. They reward businesses at the beginning of a structural rerating, not after the story becomes consensus.

What made the 246-stock study so interesting was that this pattern showed up repeatedly across entirely different sectors and market cycles.

And once you begin noticing it, you start seeing the market very differently.

Let’s get into it.

Part 1: The 6 Market Eras And Why “Good Stock, Wrong Era” Is a Real Problem

This research doesn’t just study stocks. It studies when those stocks became multibaggers. Across 246 companies, six distinct market eras emerge. Each with a dominant sector, a macro driver, and a specific type of investor behaviour.

What stood out very clearly was, and what I’ve seen happen in real time, is that no single sector stays on top forever. In Era 2 and Era 3, specialty chemicals produced big winners. But investors who kept putting their money into chemicals in Era 5, from 2022 to 2024, got very different results. Defence and Power were hardly noticeable in Era 2, but they became the top-performing sector in Era 5.

This is one of the biggest mistakes investors repeatedly make: they assume yesterday’s leadership will continue forever.

This is precisely why I spend far more time thinking about where the next structural wave is forming than simply screening for good businesses.

Take the exact same company with the exact same fundamentals and balance sheet. Buy it in the first year of a major sector rerating, and it can become a life-changing investment. Buy that same business in the fifth year of the cycle, and you may spend the next three years wondering why the stock refuses to move.

The business itself doesn’t change, the market environment around it does. Screener cannot capture this difference, but only an understanding of broader economic cycles, sector leadership, liquidity flows, and market psychology can.

Takeaway: So the next time before you even open a company’s annual report, ask yourself, at what stage of its structural wave is this sector?

Part 2: The Fundamental Fingerprint: What the Entry-Point Data Actually Looked Like

This is where most frameworks fall short. We are always advised to buy stocks with high ROCE, high margin businesses, but the data from 246 stocks shows a more nuanced picture.

2.1 ROCE: It’s the Direction, Not the Number

This is where most investing frameworks quietly fall apart. We are constantly told to buy:

• high ROCE businesses,

• high-margin companies,

• quality compounders.

And while that advice is directionally correct, the data from the 246-stock study revealed a much more nuanced reality.

High ROCE alone did not predict returns. What matters is the direction of ROCE. A rising ROCE indicates that a business is getting stronger.

In other words, the market doesn’t just reward good businesses. It rewards businesses becoming better. This distinction is something my close investing friend Avadooth Joshi has discussed with me for years, and over time it became deeply embedded in the way I evaluate companies as well.

The 246-stock study now puts hard numbers behind that intuition.

Across the multibagger dataset, three distinct ROCE profiles appeared at the point of entry:

• Already high ROCE (>30%) and sustaining → 38% of cases.

  Eg: Eicher Motors, Tata Elxsi, Vinati Organics.

  These are classic quality compounders where investors are paying for durability, consistency, and long-term competitive strength.

• ROCE inflecting upward (10% → 25%+) → 42% of cases.

  Eg: Deepak Nitrite, CDSL, KPIT.

  This was perhaps the most interesting category in the entire dataset, because this is where the market repeatedly underpriced trajectory.

  The business was visibly improving, but the market had not yet fully adjusted its expectations.

• ROCE recovering from near-zero → 20% of cases.

  Eg: CG Power, Suzlon.

  These were turnaround stories with identifiable catalysts like management change, balance sheet repair, industry recovery, or operational restructuring.

The most important finding was that companies with ROCE improving for two consecutive years were nearly 3x more likely to become future 5x stocks than businesses where ROCE was already high but stable.

That observation explains a huge part about how markets actually rerate stocks. The market consistently underprices improvement and overprices current perfection.

I’ve seen this happen real time. An investor who entered Deepak Nitrite around 2017, when ROCE was still near 8%, captured the majority of the eventual wealth creation. In contrast, an investor who waited for quality and clarity at 40% ROCE earned very little. By then, the market had already recognised the story.

And that’s an important investing lesson: the best opportunities often look operationally uncomfortable before they become statistically obvious.

Takeaway: The next time you evaluate a business, don’t just focus on the absolute ROCE number. Study its direction, consistency, and rate of improvement over multiple years. Because for a stock to become a multibagger, the trajectory matters far more than the level itself.

2.2 The Operating Margin Multiplier: Double Compounding

This is another pattern I’ve personally watched play out in stock after stock.

When a business grows revenue at 20% while simultaneously expanding operating margins by 2–3 percentage points, PAT growth does not remain 20–25%. It can suddenly become 40–60%.

Why?

Because the fixed-cost base remains largely stable. At a certain point, incremental revenue starts flowing disproportionately to the bottom line. And when that happens for multiple years together, earnings growth accelerates far faster than most investors expect.

The research refers to this phenomenon as “double compounding”, a pattern that appeared in nearly 82% of confirmed multibaggers across the dataset.

And once you understand this concept, a lot of historical multibaggers start making far more sense.

The study found that operating margin expansion typically appeared in three distinct forms:

• Type A → Product Mix Shift:

  Moving from commodity products into higher-value segments

  Eg: Deepak Nitrite (basic chemicals → phenolics). Laurus Labs (ARV API → CDMO).

  This is not merely operational efficiency. It reflects a genuine improvement in competitive positioning and business quality.

• Type B → Operating Leverage:

  Fixed-cost infrastructure scaling on rising volumes.

  Eg: CDSL, BSE, IEX.

  Once the platform or infrastructure is built, incremental revenue carries extremely high margins. This is why platform businesses often appear expensive on current earnings but surprisingly cheap on future earnings almost every year.

  The market frequently underestimates how powerful operating leverage becomes once scale starts kicking in.

• Type C → Structural Change:

  New management or turnaround eliminating inefficiencies.

  Eg: CG Power (Murugappa takeover), JB Chemicals (KKR).

  In these cases, margin expansion is less about demand growth and more about operational discipline, capital allocation, and execution quality.

Takeaway: The important insight here is that some of the biggest multibaggers were not just growing revenues. They were improving the economics of the business at the same time. And when revenue growth combines with margin expansion, the earnings curve can become dramatically steeper than most investors anticipate.

Part 3: The Capex Gap: The Most Consistently Missed Entry Window

This was one of my favourite findings in the entire research. Not because it was surprising. But because I have personally seen this pattern repeat across Indian markets for years, especially in manufacturing, chemicals, industrials, EMS, and platform businesses.

I’ve also touched on this pattern multiple times during member sessions, especially in one of the smaller pharma company discussions that was going through a very similar phase. Once you begin recognising this cycle, stock corrections during heavy capex phases start looking very different.

Here’s what typically happens.

When a high-quality company announces a major capacity expansion, a very predictable sequence begins to play out:

• debt rises, cash reserves decline, or equity dilution takes place

• depreciation expenses increase

• free cash flow weakens

• and reported earnings temporarily deteriorate

The market, which is heavily focused on trailing earnings and short-term numbers, extrapolates this weakness forward. The stock either corrects sharply or goes through a long phase where nothing seems to happen. And then, 18–36 months later, as the new plant comes online, volumes ramp, and earnings explode. By then, the rerating has already started.

That temporary period between investment pain and earnings visibility is what the research refers to as the capex gap. And in many cases, it becomes one of the most information-rich entry windows available for investors.

This is because most investors are too busy reacting to quarterly EPS fluctuations to properly evaluate what the business is quietly building underneath.

The research documents this pattern across multiple companies:

Navin Fluorine is an interesting example because the market appears to have gone through this cycle with the company more than once, first around 2017, and then again between 2022 and 2025.

During both investment phases, margins, return ratios, and near-term earnings visibility temporarily weakened.

As Navin Fluorine began investing aggressively into future capacity, manufacturing costs and employee expenses started rising well before the incremental revenue became visible in reported earnings.

From the market’s perspective, the numbers initially appeared to be deteriorating. But underneath the surface, future earnings capacity was quietly being built. And each time, as utilization improved and execution played out, the business economics inflected sharply. And what looked like temporary deterioration eventually became the foundation for the next phase of earnings growth and rerating.

The study proposes a very practical checklist before entering a potential capex-gap opportunity:

1. Is the capex size reasonable relative to the company?

   Not a reckless “bet-the-company” expansion.

2. Does management have a credible execution history?

   Past delivery matters enormously during investment cycles.

3. Is the end market entering structural demand growth?

   Capacity without demand is just future oversupply.

If all three conditions are present, temporary earnings weakness often becomes the opportunity rather than the risk.

Takeaway: One of the biggest investing mistake most investors do is treating all temporary earnings deterioration as business weakness. Sometimes the market is correctly identifying a broken business. But sometimes it is simply mispricing the uncomfortable transition period between investment and future operating leverage. Learning to distinguish between the two is where a large part of investing edge comes from.

The pitch is straightforward: one unified platform to manage vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, risk scoring, and compliance across an organisation’s entire IT infrastructure.

Their client list is genuinely impressive. BPCL, Indian Railways, major public sector banks, and several large corporates. At a time when India Inc. is waking up to the very real cost of cyber breaches, TAC sits in exactly the right place.

What Looked Good at First

• Consolidated revenue has grown rapidly, growing 2.4x year-on-year to ₹29.49 Crore in H1 FY26, and is on track to reach an annual run-rate of nearly ₹60 Crore.

• PAT of ₹15.57 Crore in just six months of H1FY26, exceeding the entire FY25 PAT

• No debt and cash flow turned positive in FY25, and the margins have been impressive at 50%+ range.

• The sector has a real tailwind. India’s cybersecurity spending is growing over 15% each year, driven by government mandates and increased IT security budgets.

• Finally, veteran investor Vijay Kedia initially held a 10.95% stake, which has been reduced to 7.85% in the latest filing.

For a young SME-listed company with a 1000 Cr market cap, operating in a high-growth sector with top clients, these are exactly the kind of numbers that typically attract microcap investors.

The story definitely looked interesting.

Note to Readers

The following analysis highlights three key observations that are most noticeable. While I have noticed a few other factors, the goal is not to cover every aspect.

The goal of this series is to help investors see things more clearly, ask better questions, identify potential risks, and think critically about what’s behind the headlines.

Importantly, the presence of red flags does not mean wrongdoing or fraud has occurred. It just shows areas where investors may not have enough clarity or comfort.

Why We Rejected: 3 Specific Red Flags

1. A 55% Margin That No Comparable Peer Can Match

TAC Infosec’s EBITDA margins are around 55% in FY25. This level of profitability is uncommon, especially for a company that is growing rapidly and expanding globally.

To put this into context, margins are significantly higher than most domestic and global peers.

When asked about this on the earnings call, the CEO replied, “That’s because of the generative AI solutions we built.”

At a conceptual level, this explanation is reasonable. However, such efficiencies are not abstract in a software business. They tend to show up clearly in the cost structure.

So, instead of accepting the explanation at face value, we examined the two main cost areas that most impact margins in a cybersecurity SaaS business: employee cost and sales and marketing expenses.

When we looked at these, the numbers did not fully support the narrative.

TAC’s combined employee and marketing spend has increased over the past two years, reaching about 30% of revenue in FY25. However, this level is still at the lower end of both domestic and global peer groups.

The combined number, however, hides an important distinction when the two components are examined separately.

On marketing expense, global cybersecurity companies spend 20–45% of revenue on marketing to acquire and retain customers. Building and maintaining a global enterprise customer base is typically cost-intensive, particularly in areas such as:

• Enterprise sales teams

• Channel partnerships

• Brand and demand generation

Against this backdrop, TAC Infosec has a different story to tell. Its marketing expenses, as disclosed, are a small part of its revenue, and are significantly lower than those of its global peers. At the same time, the company says it added over 3,000 new clients in more than 100 countries in just one year.

This creates a gap between the scale of expansion being described and the cost structure that would typically support it.

Domestic-only companies like TechD and Kratikal also spend 1–4% on marketing. But their market focus is consistent with their level of spend. TAC’s ambitions are global; its marketing spend is domestic-scale.

On employee expense, TAC is at 28% of revenue, which at first glance looks comparable to domestic peers.

But with only 73 employees, a meaningful portion of employee cost is concentrated at the top. Directors' remuneration, paid to just two executive directors, was ₹1.73 Cr, representing 21% of the total employee cost.

The CEO's remuneration grew 233% in FY25, while the average employee's salary grew 64.88%.

At the same time, three people held the CFO title within seven months. Each incoming CFO commanded roughly double the relative pay of the predecessor, from 28x the median employee salary, to 57x, to 104x.

While leadership changes can occur for a variety of reasons, the CFO plays a central role in Financial reporting.

Finally, it is also worth noting that a portion of employee expenses (₹0.85 Cr) has been capitalised as intangible assets under development. While such capitalization is not unusual in software businesses. It defers a portion of the cost from the income statement and supports reported margins. However, even after accounting for this, the overall cost structure does not fully explain the margin profile.

Each of these observations may have a reasonable explanation on its own. However, when considered together, they raise a bigger question. The company’s margins are much higher than its peers, but the reported cost structure doesn’t fully explain this difference.

For an investor, that gap matters. Because when the drivers of profitability are not clear, it’s hard to tell if those margins will last.

But margins are only one part of the story. An equally important question is:

Where is this growth actually coming from, and how much visibility do investors have into it?

2: Where is the growth actually coming from, and who is checking them?

At a headline level, TAC Infosec’s pace of growth naturally draws investor attention.

But when you look closely at the revenue numbers, it’s clear that the nature of growth has changed significantly. This introduces a new layer of complexity.

Until FY24, the business was largely standalone, with minimal contribution from subsidiaries.

This changed sharply in FY25, when multiple overseas subsidiaries were incorporated or acquired, and a meaningful portion of revenue began flowing through these entities.

This changes how the growth should be interpreted: the company is no longer scaling purely through its standalone business, but increasingly through newly added or acquired entities.

For context, in H1 FY26, overseas revenue stood at ₹19.43 Cr, accounting for ~67% of total consolidated revenue, a segment that was virtually non-existent a year ago.

While the consolidated figures confirm strong growth, they provide limited clarity on the underlying drivers of that growth.

Now look at how these entities are audited.

The consolidated financial statements are signed by Maharishi & Co., the statutory auditor of the parent entity.

However, the audit report contains a critical disclosure: the auditor did not audit two subsidiaries, which had a revenue of ₹24.39 Cr.

These two subsidiaries alone contribute ~80% of FY25 consolidated revenue, meaning the majority of the business relies on numbers not audited by the signing auditor.

This creates a meaningful gap in visibility for investors.

Also, from an accounting standards perspective, reliance on component auditors is not unusual in a multi-entity structure.

But the materiality is what changes the interpretation here.

• If 10–15% of revenue is audited by other auditors → standard practice

• If ~80% of revenue is audited by other auditors → this becomes a critical dependency

On top of that, the annual report doesn’t share the names, size, reputation, or location of component auditors.

When these elements are viewed together, a more nuanced risk begins to emerge.

This is not about questioning whether the revenue exists. It is about:

• Where is the revenue being generated?

• How is it being verified?

• And how much visibility do shareholders have?

Until these questions are clearly addressed, the structure creates a gap between reported performance and what investors can independently assess, and that gap matters.

3. Revenue without cash

When you shift your focus from the income statement to the balance sheet, especially to receivables, you start to question the quality of that growth even more.

For FY25:

• Standalone revenue: ₹23.49 Cr

• Trade receivables: ₹13.54 Cr

This implies that a significant portion of reported revenue has not yet translated into cash, with receivables representing roughly 200+ days of sales outstanding, or nearly seven months of revenue remain uncollected at year-end.

Management has attributed this elevated receivables to government and large enterprise clients.

While receivable days improved in FY25 from FY24, the trend in the aging profile shows a clear deterioration in collection quality.

• Receivables overdue by more than one year have increased from ₹0.24 Cr to ₹6.15 Cr. (Consolidated)

Despite this shift, the entire receivable base continues to be classified as “undisputed and considered good,” with no meaningful provisioning, implying that reported profitability assumes full recoverability even as the aging profile becomes more stretched.

At this stage, the natural question is not just how much is owed, but who owes it. However, the DRHP provides an important historical reference point.

Prior to listing, the company’s revenue profile was highly concentrated:

• The top 10 customers contributed ~96% of revenue

• The top 1 customer alone contributed over 82% of revenue

This level of concentration implies that revenue and, by extension, receivables were historically dependent on a very small set of counterparties. The company does not disclose an equivalent breakdown in its post-listing annual reports, which itself is a disclosure gap worth noting.

On top of all this, there is an additional accounting signal that adds to the complexity.

• Standalone receivables = ₹13.54 Cr

• Consolidated receivables = ₹9.92 Cr

In a typical structure, consolidated receivables should be equal to or higher than standalone, as subsidiaries contribute their own customer receivables.

The fact that consolidated receivables are lower suggests the presence of intercompany balances that are eliminated on consolidation, indicating that a portion of standalone revenue may be intra-group in nature rather than external.

Bringing it together: Individually, each of these elements can be explained:

• High growth → working capital expansion

• Government clients → delayed payments

• Group structure → intercompany adjustments

But when viewed together, a broader pattern emerges:

• Revenue is growing rapidly

• Cash conversion remains weak

• Receivables are aging

• Historical customer concentration is high

• Current disclosures provide limited visibility

This shifts the discussion from growth to the quality of that growth.

At this stage, the question is not whether the company is growing; it clearly is.

The question is how much visibility investors have into the counterparties driving that growth, and how reliably that revenue converts into cash.

Because over time, valuation is not sustained by reported earnings alone, but by the consistency and predictability of cash flows.

Screening Score

In investing, what separates winners from losers isn’t just growth, but the quality of that growth, the management behind it, and the fundamentals supporting it.

Despite TAC’s impressive headline figures, our 20-factor scorecard gave it only 58/100.

This scorecard is designed to save time and focus on what matters. If a company doesn’t pass our initial screen, we won’t invest more time or capital in it. Instead, we reserve our attention for businesses with clean books, aligned promoters, and consistent financial quality.

Final Thoughts

TAC Infosec is not a business we are dismissing. The product exists, and the sector tailwinds are intact.

The question is about how much visibility investors have into what is driving that business today.

Three observations, taken together, made us step back:

• The margin profile is unusually high, but not fully explained by the disclosed cost structure

• A growing share of revenue is coming from recently added subsidiaries, with limited visibility into how those numbers are audited

• Cash conversion remains weak, with receivables rising and aging becoming more stretched

None of these, in isolation, indicates a problem. But taken together, they point in one direction:

Growth is visible, but the underlying drivers of that growth are not equally transparent.

For an investor, when visibility is limited, it becomes difficult to assess the sustainability of growth, the reliability of earnings, and the true risk behind the numbers.

Suggestions for Shareholders

If you currently hold TAC Infosec, here are the key things to watch:

→ Watch the standalone revenue mix

If the standalone revenue share continues to decline materially, the thesis shifts from an operating business to a holding structure.

→ Demand clarity on audit transparency

It’s easy to build a process on paper. You can backtest ideas, write rules, and convince yourself you’ve found a solution when the market is going well. I spent most of 2024 and 2025, a tough time for Indian equities, rebuilding my approach to investing from scratch. I didn’t want to share my ideas with others until I had tested them with my own money, at least for a few months.

And after refining my strategy for a year, I ran five months of private testing first. Only then, I decided to launch a small cohort in February 2026. What followed was one of the most genuinely testing environments I’ve seen since COVID.

Here’s a bit of honest context first, because it matters for what came next.

Between 2019 and 2023, I had a good run. I had already spent 6-7 years figuring out what works, building conviction in businesses, understanding their drivers, and developing the courage to buy when others were fearful.

When COVID hit, and Nifty fell below 10,000, I saw value clearly and deployed all the capital I had at that point in time. What followed was four years of strong compounding. I held tight, kept churn minimal, and believed in the businesses I owned.

Comfortable decisions in investing are expensive ones.

My cost prices were so low that I developed a deep bias in my selling decisions. Great businesses at stretched valuations, and I kept holding because the numbers still looked good relative to what I'd paid. Meanwhile, my portfolio slowly started underperforming. I exited a few positions in early 2024, reallocating to more attractive opportunities. But not all.

The capital that should have been recycled into stronger sectors and companies was sitting in positions I’d fallen in love with. I wasn’t investing anymore. I was curating a museum of past decisions.

Even when you're sitting in genuinely good companies, there is always an opportunity cost. I wasn’t making bad decisions; I was making comfortable ones due to endowment bias. And making comfortable decisions about capital allocation can be costly.

I acknowledged my bias and sensed that a correction was coming on its way, either in price or in time. That’s when I realised I need to build something more rigorous, a framework for every decision. Rules that would hold even when emotion said otherwise. Something that addressed not just what to buy, but when, how much, and critically, when to let go.

That became the EDGE framework.

I tested it on my own money first. Here's what happened.

After spending almost a year refining and focusing my thoughts and energy on the strategy, I decided to put the framework to the test in September 2025. I knew it wasn’t perfect, but to see if it really worked, I had to test it. And this was the best time to do so, given the long sideways market India had been experiencing for almost a year.

The atmosphere was uncertain because of Trump’s tariffs and India’s failure to get a deal. Although there was a GST cut, the broader markets remained weak. The small / microcap stocks, where I have significant exposure, were particularly punishing. Then, in January 2026 alone, the microcap index fell another 5% in just one month.

However, the fact that my strategy automatically raised the cash levels was the first real signal that the framework was working as it should. As a result, my overall portfolio did fairly better than the overall index during this time.

And by the end of January, as my indicators started to turn, I felt it was the right time to test my framework with a larger sum of money.

I also felt February was the best time to launch our first test membership cohort. I believed this environment would provide the best learning experience for the members, giving them enough time to understand the processes and get their portfolios in place before any potential reversal.

February started well. Then February 28 happened

I didn’t expect everything to be perfect, but I didn’t think the environment would be so volatile either. February started off well. There were enough opportunities to pick and choose from. And just as markets seemed to be turning around, the US-Iran war broke out on February 28, 2026.

The market that was just beginning to recover had a new shock to absorb. The Nifty 50 fell 11.31% in March alone. The MicroCap 250 fell another 11.29% the same month. FIIs, who had briefly moderated their selling, resumed. Oil crossed a hundred. Breadth collapsed again. The Leaders bucket on my dashboard went from recovering to near-empty within weeks.

This is the environment the cohort ran in. The feeling wasn’t panic. It was more unsettling. There was a constant low-grade uncertainty, and each new piece of data seemed to contradict the last.

And that uncertainty showed up in every conversation I had,

“Do you think we’ve hit the bottom?”

“I bought the dip last week, but it kept falling.”

“I sold out because I couldn’t take the volatility, and now I’m watching it bounce.”

These were all genuine questions. I would have had the same questions and apprehension. But now that I have a framework to guide me, I just stuck to it and followed it religiously. This is exactly what I stressed in the members’ meet: be ruthless in your sell decision and align where there is strength. With automatic recycling, my portfolio was 50% in cash by mid-March.

Inside the cohort, I made a deliberate choice to work differently.

In the meantime, from the very first session, I focused on two very important questions: how does the fundamentals of the company/ sector look like, and what does the data tell us about how to allocate and position? I separated two decisions that most investors collapse into one: what to buy and when to buy. A great business bought at the wrong stage is a painful experience. Similarly, a mediocre business bought at the right stage is still not an investment I would be comfortable owning. Getting both right requires a different mindset and different disciplines.

Every week, I stressed on the process and encouraged members to build positions incrementally, test capital first, and scale only when the market confirmed the view. In practice, it’s harder to stick to your discipline when prices are falling, and your instinct is telling you to either buy or sell everything.

Same stock. Completely different outcome.

For Example: Before one of our pre-war sessions, a company we were analysing jumped around 30% in just a couple of days, before I could even present it to the group. The fundamentals were sound, and the sector was showing signs of improvement. However, when we looked at the price action during the session, it was clear that the entry point was wrong. The stock had risen too quickly. I stated it clearly that it wasn’t the right time to buy, and one should wait for it to consolidate or pull back first before entering.

Most investors would have jumped on it at that point, seeing the breakout. The story was gaining traction, momentum was building, and doing nothing while a stock takes off can feel like a costly mistake.

The stock eventually pulled back. It went back to its base range over the next few weeks. Now it’s rallying again, and from a better entry zone than when things were exciting.

That discipline, the willingness to do the work, form a view, and then wait for the market to give you the right moment, is what separates process from impulse.

The stock from the example above? It has since broken out to new highs. Investors who waited for the consolidation and entered at the right stage captured the move. The ones who might have chased it at the initial surge would have sat through weeks of drawdown or consolidation before seeing any gain. Same stock. Completely different outcomes.

The goal was to fall less and stay positioned.

And all this while, my own portfolio, guided through the EDGE framework, has continued to outperform the broader market through the toughest months. I started tracking it weekly, not as a vanity exercise, but because I now have the responsibility of educating members. What’s the point if my own portfolio underperforms over a longer time frame?

Here is the data from the cohort period:

At their worst, the Nifty fell over 11%, and the MicroCap index fell 10.52%, but the portfolio fell only 6.76%. By early April, as the market began recovering, the portfolio had fully recouped its drawdown. The goal was never to avoid losses entirely. The markets don’t allow that. The goal was to fall less and stay positioned. The framework did exactly that.

The sectors and stocks I presented in sessions during this period did reasonably well compared to the market, even with all the volatility, because I used criteria that filtered for real fundamental strength instead of just interesting stories.

For the first time in years, it didn't feel like educated guessing.

The real outcome was not the returns.

It was that decisions stopped feeling random. There was a process and framework to adhere to.

One of the biggest pitfalls in investing is how we manage our emotions and temperament. As Warren Buffett puts it: “Investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with the 130 IQ. Once you have ordinary intelligence, what you need is the temperament to control the urges that get other people into trouble in investing.”

For me, that temperament is the process. Because when the market fell, I had a framework to consult, rather than emotions to manage. The process addresses the urge to panic, to chase, or to hold on too long, and it did so before they become actual decisions.

I had gotten a handle on the art of identifying high-quality businesses that I was confident putting capital into. This expertise came from my experiences in previous cycles. What I did not have was a clear answer for how and when to enter, how much to allocate, and when to exit. Now I do.

Each cycle teaches us something new, and this is what this cycle taught me.

I have no intention of predicting. My process will do that for me.

I have no idea how the war or the broader economy will pan out. Beyond a point, nobody can predict, and I've stopped pretending otherwise. My focus is on what the market is telling me.

April told a clear story. The Nifty MicroCap 250 bounced 13.49% in a single month. The broader small-cap range recovered 11.45%. After nearly 18 months of consolidation and a brutal March, that kind of move in the most beaten-down segments is not something to dismiss.

But I have no intention of predicting what happens from here. My process will do that for me. If strength builds, I will be fully invested. If breadth begins to falter, my cash levels will automatically rise. That is the discipline the framework enforces. No attachment to any stock or sector. I do the research, shortlist quality businesses, and let the price tell me whether something has earned a place in the portfolio.

Three months was enough to confirm what was missing.

I started this as a 3-month test to convince myself. I wanted accountability before I asked anyone else to commit. Three months is still a short period, and I’ll be the first to admit that. But what it confirmed was something I suspected going in: what most investors are missing isn’t more stock ideas or more data. It’s a way of thinking.

What shaped the week

Brent crude hit $110 per barrel because of rising geopolitical tensions. Donald Trump’s warning of potential strikes on Iran led to a big sell-off in Asian markets, but it bounced back quickly. The RBI jumped in to steady the rupee, stopping its steep slide for a while. The rupee saw its biggest gain in over twelve years, but the situation in West Asia is still up in the air and crude is still over $100.

For a serious investor, the question this week isn’t whether the market will rally, but whether its internal structure is starting to change. The EDGE data provides some insight into this. It suggests that while there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic about the market’s structure, it’s too early to be convinced.

For the week: Nifty −0.5%, Sensex −0.4%, Midcap −0.6%, Smallcap +0.8%. Realty and Healthcare led. Metals and Power lagged.

One date worth marking: TCS reports on April 9th. After eleven weeks of macro noise, FII selling, a geopolitical shock, a currency crisis, and crude above $100, this will be the first real test of where earnings actually stand.

FII / DII Flow

DII has bought for 11 weeks straight. FII has sold every week since mid-February, with five weeks selling above ₹24,000 Cr.

What stands out is that the rupee just had its best gain in twelve years, but foreign investors still sold a whopping ₹24,479 Cr. That suggests the problem isn’t the rupee itself, it’s either a deeper issue with India or a big change in global investment portfolios.

And for a market to have a lasting rally, you need both of them. DIIs can absorb selling and stabilise prices, but they can’t change the market’s multiples. That requires conviction from FIIs. Currently, one is working, and the other is not.

What I’m watching: The first week FII posts a net positive flow. This single data point signals that the market character is starting to change.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

The ratio jumped to 0.22 from 0.11 last week. It’s been in repair for 11 weeks now, and it’s never gone above 0.63.

The jump from 0.11 to 0.22 is genuine, but it’s mostly the laggards unloading their shares, not the leaders stepping in. We’re seeing the selling slow down, but we haven’t seen buyers jump in just yet.

What I’m watching: The S/W Ratio is above 0.50 for two consecutive weeks and trending up slowly. This means the Leaders bucket is expanding steadily, not just rebounding from a trough.

Bucket Analysis: What the Market Is Signaling Beneath the Surface

The number of stocks in the laggards bucket has dropped sharply from 697 to 361, and at first glance, this seems like a strong positive. However, there is no meaningful increase in the Leaders and Emerging category.

And when I break this down:

• The improvement is heavily skewed toward microcaps.

• Microcap laggards saw a meaningful contraction (524 → 192)

• Mid and large caps, however, have not seen a proportionate move out

What this actually implies

This is not a sign of broad-based strength returning; it is relief in the most beaten-down part of the market.

In other words:

→ The weakest part of the market bounced

→ The stronger segments where institutional money flow has not yet participated meaningfully

The important signal I am focused on

Despite the bounce this week, the new stocks entering the Emerging bucket have not expanded meaningfully (20 → 48).

More importantly, this increase is not supported by a rise in the number of stocks showing weekly and 4-week retention in the key Emerging and Leaders category, which suggests a lack of conviction behind this week’s move.

In fact, 4-week persistence in Leaders has dropped from 44 → 28, suggesting:

→ Profit booking at the stronger end, or

→ Early signs of sector rotation rather than sustained leadership

Why this matters

A healthy market transition typically looks like:

1. Laggards reduce

2. Emerging expands consistently

3. Leaders start building

Right now, we are seeing Step 1 without a strong Step 2

What I’m watching:

This makes me believe the move looks more like a short covering or a relief bounce from oversold conditions, rather than fresh institutional accumulation or the early stage of a market recovery.

What would change my view

→ Sustained expansion in the number of stocks in the Emerging bucket, with improving weekly and 4-week retention.

→ The Leaders bucket is stabilising and starting to expand again.

→ Microcap strength is spilling over into mid and large caps.

We are still in a transition phase and not a recovery phase. The work right now is tracking the names that continue to stay in the Emerging bucket and not reacting to those that only enter briefly.

3 Names Worth Digging Deeper

These are not recommendations. Here are three names worth deeper research this week, based on corporate actions and bucket data.

1. Pace Digitek

Received two separate NTPC orders in one week of Rs. 494.5 Cr LoA on March 30 and a Rs. 495 Cr EPC order for a 200 MW BESS project in Bihar on April 2.

What to watch: NTPC is more than just a customer, as no agency in India would risk a critical grid storage project on an untested vendor. The fact that two orders were placed in the same week by the same client suggests that the relationship is becoming stronger, not just a one-time transaction. With an energy order book over Rs. 6,000 Cr and BESS manufacturing capacity set to double from 5 GWh to 10 GWh by September 2026, the answer looks promising. However, the next two quarters will reveal if demand matches or exceeds this capacity.

2. Enviro Infra Engineers

Received Rs. 664 Cr LoA from NTPC on March 28 and Rs. 406 Cr on March 30, marking its first meaningful entry into BESS alongside its core water infrastructure business.

What to watch: After building a sewage treatment plant for a municipality, the O&M contract acts like a toll road. Enviro already has Rs. 933 Cr in that O&M book. The BESS entry uses the same government-client strategy in a new area. The key question is whether management can achieve 27% EBITDA margins in BESS without the ten years of knowledge gained in water.

3. Avantel

Received a Rs. 137 Cr order from the India Meteorological Department for satellite communication and RF systems.

What to watch: Defence and strategic electronics suppliers compete on qualification, not price. Once approved by a government agency for sensitive RF systems, switching to a new vendor poses a national security risk. The Rs. 137 Cr IMD order makes up 55% of FY25’s annual revenue and supports a nearly debt-free balance sheet. However, any advantage from government procurement lasts only until the policy cycle lasts.

A Final Note on the Dashboard & Membership

There’s always a seductive comfort in buying something cheap.

If a quality company you’ve studied drops 30% from its peak, it seems foolish not to buy. The math looks simple: lower price, same business, better future returns.

But here is what a decade of Indian market experience has taught me: cheap is where good businesses go to wait, but for how long is unclear. It’s not a signal, just a test of patience that looks like an opportunity.

BEL was cheap in 2018. Ask anyone who bought it then and held for three years and they’ll tell you exactly what that patience cost them.

Indian Bank was cheap in 2019. Yet the actual re-rating didn’t begin until 2022. Three years of watching a “screaming buy” do nothing.

Lupin fell from ₹2,000 to ₹700 by 2018. It looked like a genuine turnaround story in the making. But the real recovery finally began, four years later.

None of them rewarded the “buy the cheap quality stock” or “buy the dip” investor in any reasonable timeframe. The waiting was long and brutal. These were genuinely good businesses going through temporary pain. However, when entry is wrong, you’re not holding a quality stock. You’re holding a dead position: one that consumes your capital, your attention, and your conviction, while the market compounds elsewhere.

This piece is about how to read three important filters together, so that when you buy quality, the market is ready to agree with you.

The Three Filters That Matter

Here it is in plain language:

Filter 1: Quality: Is this a real business with durable or emerging economics? Good ROCE, clean cash flows, sound governance, a balance sheet that doesn’t lie.

Filter 2: Growth Outlook: Is the narrative evolving or showing early signs of a turnaround? Is revenue growth visible and accelerating in actual quarterly data, not just promised in management commentary?

Filter 3: Price Action Support: Is the market agreeing with you?

This is where most fundamental investors hesitate. Mixing price action with fundamental analysis feels like a compromise, and like you’re abandoning your conviction to chase the crowd.

But consider the real question here: even if you’re right about the business, what is your capital doing while you wait for the market to agree? BEL was a genuinely great business in 2018, and someone who bought it then held a flat position for nearly three years while the broader market moved. The thesis eventually played out, but those two dead years had a real cost.

Capital parked in a non-moving stock is capital not compounding anywhere else.

Let me walk you through three filters I use, along with case studies, to highlight how they rewarded patient investors when all three signals aligned.

Filter 1: Quality: The Prerequisite Everyone Gets Right (and Misuses)

Quality isn’t complicated to identify.

ROCE above 15% or the likelihood of going above 15%. Profits converting to cash flows. Manageable debt. Promoter skin in the game.

Most serious investors can now map a company’s quality trajectory in just 10 minutes using Screener, and with AI tools analyzing conference call transcripts, it’s never been easier to understand the narrative behind the numbers.

However, the mistake isn’t identifying quality. The mistake is treating quality as the reason to buy. It is just the first step, like entering a waiting room.

BEL: Quality Nobody Wanted for Four Years

BEL was consolidating around the ₹50 level from 2016 onwards. By 2019, it had become genuinely cheap: P/E of just 15, ROCE of 30%, zero debt, government-backed, a near-monopoly on critical defence electronics for the Indian armed forces.

Every quality metric was exceptional. The valuation was undemanding. Yet from April 2016 to mid-2021, the stock did nothing essentially. Meanwhile, Nifty more than doubled.

But the question one should be asking is, why did quality produce nothing?

Quality was there. The defence sector story was beginning to build, but it hadn’t translated into visible, accelerating revenue. The thesis existed. The proof didn’t.

And most investors don’t last that long; they sell within a year or two after their patience has been tested, only to see BEL go up to ₹450.

The lesson from Filter 1: Quality is where you start the analysis. It is not where you start the clock.

Filter 2: Growth Outlook: How the Narrative Evolved (and When to Act)

Every multibagger in Indian markets follows a common pattern: the story is in place long before it shows up in the company’s performance. The mistake most investors make is acting on this story before it translates into actual results.

BEL is the clearest illustration of this.

From 2016 to 2019, the defence indigenisation story was already being told. Policy announcements. Import substitution targets. Make in India ambitions. Smart investors could see the thesis. And many of them bought BEL early and then waited, and waited, while the stock did nothing because the narrative had not yet translated into numbers.

The actual shift happened between 2020 and 2022, and you could see it building, quarter by quarter, in Screener:

• Order book grew from ~₹30,000 Cr toward ₹75,000+ Cr, driven by Positive Indigenisation Lists that banned imports on 300+ defence items

• Revenue growth moved from single digits to consistent double digits, not a one-quarter spike, but rather a sustained acceleration

• OPM expanded from the 20-25% band to 25-30%+, as operating leverage from higher volumes started flowing through

What Filter 2 is really asking is not whether the story is compelling, but whether it shows up in the P&L. If you looked at BEL’s Screener page in late 2021, you could see the answer change from no to yes, quarter by quarter.

The narrative was real. But it only became investable when the numbers confirmed it.

Indian Bank: The NPA Clean-Up Written Quarter by Quarter

Similarly, Indian Bank was genuinely distressed throughout most of the 2010s. Gross NPA peaked above 10%. Provisioning ate into profits. The prevailing view was simple: “PSU bank, NPA mess, avoid. Private banks are the future.”

Nobody was wrong. That was the reality then.

However, the cycle began turning around 2018 with government intervention, capital infusions and the early signs of a clean-up. Many investors noticed. Some bought, and then the stock fell further.

Because the narrative had not yet translated into numbers.

The actual acceleration happened after 2021. And from that point, you could see it every quarter on Screener:

• Gross NPA: 6.53% → 2.23%

• Net NPA: 1.00% → 0.15%

• Net profit nearly doubled.

This is what a narrative evolution looks like in the numbers. You don’t need a brokerage note. You can see it yourself every 90 days.

Those who bought “cheap” at ₹300 in 2018 watched it fall to ₹70 and sat through two years of pain waiting for a thesis to play out. Those who waited for Filter 2 to confirm the clean-up visible in actual quarterly numbers and for Filter 3 to agree, would have entered around late 2021 and made 5x+.

Same business. Completely different experience. The only difference was the discipline to wait for evidence.

The lesson from Filter 2: you don’t need to predict the narrative change. You need to confirm it quarter by quarter until it becomes undeniable and only act when Filter 3 agrees.

Filter 3: Price Action Support: When the Market Agrees With Your Research

This is the filter that separates the investor who made 6x from the one who waited four years to break even on the exact same company.

Price action support isn’t about charts for the sake of charts. It’s about one question: Is the market, in aggregate, agreeing with your thesis?

When a quality business with an accelerating growth also shows both the 50 DMA and 200 DMA sloping upward with price consistently above them, and relative strength during corrections, it is generally a sign that the market is confirming something.

Institutional money is accumulating. Fund managers who’ve done the work are building positions, and that demand shows in the price trend.

For BEL, the 200 DMA turned decisively upward in late 2021, exactly when the defence indigenisation narrative was quantifying itself in order book data.

The stock moved from ₹80 → ₹140 → ₹200 → ₹300 → ₹450, with the 200 DMA as a rising floor throughout.

All three filters confirmed simultaneously in late 2021:

• Quality —> ROCE > 25%, zero debt (always had it).

• Growth narrative —> Order book expanding, quarterly revenue visibly accelerating.

• Price action —> 50 DMA and 200 DMA both turning upward, price holding above both.

Even if you entered by late 2021 at ₹80-120, the result by 2026 would be ₹413. This is nearly a 4x return, with minimal opportunity cost, since the capital was deployed only after the signal was confirmed.

Yes, we missed the move from ₹50 to ₹100. But let’s be honest, no one can catch perfect bottoms or perfect tops. The three-filter approach doesn’t promise the cheapest entry. It promises the right entry, the one you can hold with conviction, scale into without second-guessing, and sleep through every correction.

Lupin: Six Years of Waiting, Two Years of Returns

Lupin is the sharpest illustration of why Filter 3 cannot be skipped.

The stock fell from ₹2,000 to ₹700 between 2015 and 2018 due to USFDA issues, US generics pricing pressure, and margin compression. By 2018, the company’s fundamentals started looking strong again. It had a quality pharma franchise, a peak ROCE of over 20%, a solid domestic business, and a deep global generics pipeline. The fact that Rakesh Jhunjhunwala held the stock in his portfolio gave investors extra confidence to invest.

Then COVID gave them a cruel tease. Lupin rallied back to ₹1,200 in 2021, almost convincing everyone the recovery had finally arrived. Only to fall right back to ₹700. Those who averaged down through the rally had now been wrong twice.

And this is the rule Lupin makes impossible to ignore:

Never enter when the price is below a downward-sloping 200 DMA.

And here's the important corollary: even if you'd entered on the COVID rally thinking the breakout was real, a disciplined exit rule to get out when price falls back below the 200 DMA would have limited your loss to a manageable amount. The same process that protected you from the false start would have guided you back in for the real one in 2023.

So, what changed in 2023? Two things happened simultaneously and this is precisely the pattern Filter 3 is designed to catch.

Filter 2 turned visible: OPM started expanding consistently → 12% (Dec 2022) → 18% → 20% → 24% → 28% → 33% (Sep 2025). USFDA clearances came through. The US generics portfolio strengthened. For the first time in six years, the narrative had quarterly proof.

Filter 3 confirmed it: The 200 DMA turned upward. Price broke above it and held. For the first time since 2015, all three filters were simultaneously green.

Entry around ₹800-1,000 in early-mid 2023, when the price moved above the rising 200 DMA, yielded a result of ₹2,348 by 2026. This meant a gain of over 130% in roughly two years.

In contrast, those who bought during COVID had to wait three more years just to break even. On the other hand, those who waited for all three filters to align in 2023 earned over 130% in just two years.

It was the same business, but the experience was completely different. The key difference was the discipline of waiting for the right signal.

Why This Process Works (And Why Most Investors Skip It)

India has over 5,000 listed companies. Regardless of the market condition: whether it’s a bull market, a bear market, or a sideways trend, around 5-10% of these stocks usually meet three key criteria.

They are quality businesses with growth that show up in their quarterly results and price action.

You don’t need to try to time the market with the Nifty. What you really need is a solid process.

And here’s why creating one is worthwhile.

1. You only invest in quality businesses that have a ROCE above 15% or are likely to exceed 15%, with profits that convert to cash flow, manageable debt levels, and credible promoters. No matter how cheap a stock may seem, avoid buying it if it doesn’t meet the quality standards.

2. You will have a clear exit rule before investing. Many investors lose money by holding on too long. A good rule is to sell if the price falls below 200 DMA and stays there for more than 3 days in a row, no matter what. This helps take emotions out of your decision.

3. You are able to identify leaders early on by applying these three filters. This approach has helped me spot many companies before they gained popularity.

4. If you can’t find a good investment opportunity, this system automatically helps you raise cash. During a bear market, few stocks pass this filter, so the process naturally moves you towards holding more cash.

5. You focus on winning stocks, not holding onto losing ones. When a stock falls, you reduce your investment or sell, and when it rises, you invest more. This approach lets you build on what’s working and get rid of what’s not.

Now Your Turn

It had a long period of accumulation, followed by a huge rally, and has since corrected significantly. The 200 DMA has stopped sloping downward and is now moving upward slowly.

Chart B: A solar company. Listed recently, riding India’s renewable push, order book-driven growth. It is one of the few fully integrated solar cell manufacturing companies in India. The stock had a strong listing, but it has been declining steadily for several months. The price is now above the 200-day moving average and is holding steady, even in this weak market.

Chart C: An industrial engineering company. Niche player with a strong order pipeline and set to benefit from the capex cycle. The stock has been declining steadily from its highs, but recently saw a sharp spike in price on high volume. The 200-day moving average is trending upwards now.

Here’s the honest truth: you don’t need to be right on all three. One good investment that works in your favour can make a big difference. Exit early if it’s a false signal to minimize the damage in the other two if they don’t work in your favour. Overall, on a portfolio basis, you would still do well.

BEL was seen as “cheap” from 2016 to 2019. Many smart investors owned it during those years, but they didn’t make any returns until 2021. Same is the case with Lupin and Indian Bank.

Let me pin my thoughts before we get into the data

Last week, I mentioned that the key number to watch was whether new entrants to the Laggards bucket would stay at 131 or start to slow down. This week, the number came in at 81. This single data point is more noteworthy than the Nifty's flat close.

Nifty fell 0.2%, and Sensex and Midcap were flat for the week of 20 March. However, looking deeper: Brent crude reached $119 mid-week before settling at $109. The rupee hit a new all-time low of 93.71. FII outflows were Rs 35,697 crore, surpassing last week's Rs 31,824 crore. India's trade deficit for February widened to $27.1 billion.

Despite the headline, the week saw some significant deterioration and a few signs of improvement for the first time. Let's dive into the data.

What the data is telling me: beyond the numbers

• The flat index is hiding internal rotation and distribution. When rallies fail quickly, it usually means institutions are selling during strong periods, not buying.

• FII outflows increased to ₹35,697 crore this week. This selling is not driven by a specific event, but rather a continued shift of global capital away from emerging markets.

• DII inflows of ₹30,642 crore are still providing support, but the buying is more about absorbing losses than being aggressive. It is helping to cushion the declines, rather than setting market trends.

• The rebound in Auto seems temporary rather than a sign of real improvement. We will know for sure if volume growth continues into April; if not, this is just a brief recovery.

• This week, there is no clear sector that investors are turning to for safety, which means capital is not moving with confidence; it is taking a step back.

• My biggest concern is a weak rupee. When the rupee is weak, it increases crude import costs and limits the RBI’s ability to cut interest rates.

In markets like this, the real damage isn’t volatility, it’s opportunity cost and emotional missteps.

EDGE Tracker

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

• The ratio rose from 0.12 to 0.14, the first increase in six weeks.

• It needs to stay above 0.15 for two weeks to show the damage rate is slowing.

• The market is still in a repair phase, not a recovery phase. Early stabilisation signals are emerging, but confirmation is absent.

• This means I’m still researching and not yet aggressively deploying. I’m building my list and will move capital slowly when the data confirms the trend.

Leaders Bucket

• We had 30 new entrants and 16 exits, our first net positive week. This shows a structural change, as exits are no longer 3-4 times higher than new entrants.

• ATH overlap rose from 46 to 57. More businesses are near record highs, even after the Nifty fell 12% from its peak. The market is holding onto these businesses.

• Large-cap Leaders were flat at 22. Small-cap names jumped from 12 to 24 in one week. These bounces can be technical, so we need to validate them before getting convinced.

• The 48 four-week persistent names are the most important in the list. These names stayed close to their 52-week highs during the four-week correction. This happened even with Brent at $119, record FII selling, and the rupee at all-time lows. This shows strength, not just luck.

  Laggards Bucket

• Three things happened this week: new entrants fell from 131 to 81, exits rose from 60 to 96, and the total count dropped for the first time, from 633 to 618.

• This combination has not happened before in this correction. One week is not enough to show a trend, but if it happens again, it would be a strong sign that damage has peaked.

• Two more weeks of new entrants below 80 and exits above 80 means the damage phase has likely peaked. We’re already one week into this pattern.

Emerging Leaders

• This is my favourite bucket, and it has one notable number this week. Exits dropped from 41 to 30, which is the biggest decrease in a single week since this correction started. Not as many businesses are losing their upward trend. The pipeline has also stopped getting smaller.

• The 13 four-week retained names: These make up our research shortlist for the week. They are businesses that have maintained their improving structure despite everything the market has thrown at them this month.

Risk posture for the week:

• The market is still recovering and showing early signs of stability.

• We should take a selective approach, based on research, rather than investing aggressively.

• Capital should be allocated gradually, with a focus on businesses that perform consistently across different areas.

• We’ll know things are getting better when we see steady progress in the ratio. We also need consistent results in all areas.

3 Names Worth Digging Deeper

These are not recommendations. Here are three names worth deeper research this week, based on corporate actions and bucket data.

1. Belrise Industries

Trigger:

• Entry into aerospace precision manufacturing through the acquisition of Chester Hall (UK).

• This marks a shift from auto components to higher-margin, specialised manufacturing.

Second-Order Implications:

• Aerospace has a different demand cycle and margin profile, which is less cyclical than the auto industry.

• If execution is disciplined, there is potential for improvement in the overall margin mix.

• Integration risk and discipline in capital allocation are key factors to consider.

What I Am Monitoring Next

• Revenue from the aerospace segment

• Margin trends compared to the core auto business

• Capital allocation discipline after the acquisition

2. WeWork India

Trigger:

• A large managed office deal (₹475 crore) has been signed with a single client in Hyderabad.

• A significant part of the project’s capacity was committed before it was completed.

Second-Order Implications:

• This shows there is demand for large-scale managed office solutions.

• However, there is a risk that expansion is happening too quickly, before occupancy rates have stabilised.

• While revenue visibility has improved, it is now crucial to ensure efficient use of space.

What I Am Monitoring:

• The occupancy trend over the next two quarters

• How quickly new clients are being added compared to the expansion of capacity

• The impact of unused space on margins

3. Bajel Projects Ltd

Trigger:

• Two large EPC orders within three days, including a ₹700+ crore substation project.

• Strengthens positioning in power transmission infrastructure.

Second-Order Implications:

• Order size signals increasing relevance in grid expansion projects.

• Execution capability and working capital management will determine profitability.

• EPC businesses often face margin pressure if execution timelines slip.

• Strong order book visibility, but conversion quality matters more than size.

Last week, I emphasized that patience is essential. This week, the data has underscored that point.

Brent surpassed $100. Iran heightened tensions. The Nifty dropped 5.3%, marking its worst week since June 2022. The Strength vs. Weakness Ratio fell to 0.12, and the Leaders Bucket contains 74 names, with only 7 new additions this week.

However, it’s important to note that the market’s movements tell one story, while the underlying businesses present another.

Companies are winning significant orders, even in the toughest week the market has seen in four years. The Cabinet has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission with an Rs 8.7 trillion budget. These developments represent substantial operational and policy changes that will impact quarterly results, irrespective of Brent crude’s performance next week.

This week, I reflected on the businesses in the Laggards Bucket, assessing which ones have the potential to transition into the Emerging Leaders Bucket and which shall continue to encounter major obstacles.

Recognizing this distinction is vital now. It’s not about reacting to price fluctuations or investing without thought; it’s about asking the right questions for each name and sector.

With that perspective, let’s examine what the data truly reveals.

What the data is telling me: beyond the numbers

• Foreign investors sold ₹31,824 crore, the largest weekly outflow in five weeks. Rising crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty are causing global funds to reduce exposure to emerging markets.

• The only sector that ended the week in the positive was BSE Power, up by 0.7%. This isn’t random. It shows that institutional investors want stable revenue, long-term power purchase agreements, and earnings that aren’t affected by fuel cost changes.

• BSE Auto’s 9.9% decline is the most significant sectoral shift this week. The auto sector is more than just consumer discretionary; it is India’s largest manufacturing employer, a key indicator of credit quality, and an early-cycle signal.

• And when companies like M&M, Maruti, and Eicher see drops of 11-12% in a week, the market is reflecting a real disruption in consumer discretionary spending and vehicle credit, beyond just challenges from fuel costs.

• CPI for February came in at 3.21%, up from 2.74% in January. While this increase is manageable, we should be vigilant.

• If crude oil-related inflation begins to affect fuel, logistics, and food supply chains, the Reserve Bank of India’s opportunity for rate cuts may diminish. This is an important trend to watch over the next couple of months, rather than just this week.

• Finally, study what each business is doing now. Hold your capital tightly. Deploy it only when the data shows the right direction, not just when sentiment improves.

In markets like this, the real damage isn’t volatility, it’s opportunity cost and emotional missteps.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

• At 0.12, we are seeing the lowest reading since this tracker began. For every stock near a 52-week high, about eight are close to a 52-week low.

• A ratio that continues to decline indicates that aggressive investment is not the right approach at this time.

• We should focus on research rather than deployment until clarity emerges on the war front.

• The ratio needs to remain above 0.15 for two consecutive weeks before I would view the selling as stabilizing rather than accelerating. I prefer buying at higher prices rather than attempting to predict and catch a falling knife.

Leaders Bucket

• The figure that stands out to me is 7 (new entrants), and is likely one of the lowest readings since the COVID correction.

• Without fresh names entering the Leaders Bucket, we won’t see a recovery in market breadth. It’s challenging to sustain a market advance without new entrants.

• Large-cap leaders dropped from 54 to 23 in just one week as a result of funds aggressively rebalancing their portfolios.

• The 4-week persistence list features 50 names. These stocks have remained close to their highs, even with four weeks of market decline.

• This list is the main takeaway from this section. These businesses are showing they can withstand tough conditions. The important work is understanding why these businesses are holding up.

Laggards Bucket

• 633 stocks near 52-week lows. That is roughly one in four stocks that are close to their 52-week lows.

• I want to highlight one data point from this week: the number of new entrants to the Laggards Bucket slowed down, going from 169 last week to 131 this week.

• If this continues for two more weeks, it could mean the damage rate is slowing down.

• Large-cap laggards are now at 58, up from 29 five weeks ago. The mid-cap laggards now number 32, up from 13.

• This shows that selling isn’t just hitting the speculative market. It’s also affecting core institutional holdings.

• The question I am asking for every name in this bucket: Has the business itself changed, or is it just the price that’s changed?

• For companies where only the price has changed: those still making money, filling orders, and meeting steady demand, this is where promising long-term opportunities are emerging.

Emerging Leaders

• This is my favourite bucket, and this week it has one data point worth pausing on.

• The overall pipeline is declining from 114 to 62 in five weeks, which is expected.

• However, while everything else is falling apart this week, large-cap Emerging Leaders bounced back from 4 to 9. This is the most significant counter-trend signal in the dataset this week.

• A business that can hold its structure when the market has every reason to push it lower is hinting at something about its earnings quality and institutional demand that sets it apart from the rest of the market right now.

• These businesses have faced five weeks of tough conditions. Instead of losing momentum, they are actually holding or gaining it.

• In past cycles, names that showed up in this bucket during corrections often moved to the Leaders Bucket in recovery. These names delivered the best risk-adjusted returns of the cycle.

3 Names Worth Digging Deeper

These are not recommendations. Here are the top 3 names to focus on for research this week, based on corporate actions and bucket data.

1. Va Tech Wabag Ltd

WABAG won two large orders from CMWSSB, each worth over Rs 1,000 crore. The first order is for a 45 MLD TTRO plant in Kodungaiyur. It includes 18 months of refurbishment followed by 18.5 years of O&M. The second order is for a city-wide water transmission network in Chennai. It includes 54 months to complete and 10 years of O&M.

I’m tracking how these contracts, along with the JJM extension and Wabag’s expertise, will increase recurring revenue in the next three years. This could enhance earnings quality.

2. ACME Solar Holdings Ltd

ACME commissioned around 175 MW / 642 MWh of Battery Energy Storage in Rajasthan. The major concern is debt, with Rs 12,998 crore in borrowings and an interest coverage of about 1.7x.

What I am monitoring is the quarterly EBIT, which I expect to rise towards Rs 500 crore, and the debt-to-equity ratio, which should start to decrease. If both of these happen, the equity is likely to be re-rated significantly.

3. Balaji Amines Ltd

Balaji reported an ammonia supply disruption due to the Middle East conflict, making some plants non-operational. The key question is how long the disruption will last. If the issue resolves within one to two quarters, the plants will resume operation and the business will recover. The company’s strong balance sheet and low debt support this outcome. I will be monitoring Q4 FY26 results, operating profit margin, war situation, and global ammonia prices.

Let me pin my thoughts before we get into the data

U.S.-Israel strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, followed by Iranian retaliation, introduced a new macro variable that the market is still trying to price. Brent crude surged over 17.5% in a single week. Spot crude crossed $90. The image at the top of this edition captures it plainly: Crude at $90.90, Brent at $92.69, up over 12% and 8.5% in a single day.

The Nifty fell 2.9%. India VIX surged 45%. USD/INR touched an all-time low of 92.30.

With this backdrop, I want to share one perspective that has stayed with me all week.

Warren Buffett once said, “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”

We are now firmly in a fear phase. VIX at nine-month highs. 562 stocks are near 52-week lows. Our data is at its weakest since this tracker began. That doesn’t mean you deploy capital blindly. It means you watch, prepare, and build your list, because the best businesses in India are quietly returning to more interesting entry zones. The work done in phases like this often determines returns in the next cycle.

What does oil above $90 mean for India? Here is my honest view.

This is not a background variable. For India specifically, elevated crude is a multi-channel pressure point:

• Every $1 increase in crude adds ~$2 billion to India’s annual import bill. At $90+, the Current Account Deficit widens structurally, and this is not a one-week event.

• The INR faces sustained pressure. The currency carry attractiveness that brought FIIs back in February evaporates quickly when crude is at these levels, and geopolitical uncertainty is elevated.

• RBI’s rate-cut trajectory gets complicated. Lower inflation was opening a window. Higher crude closes it as fuel, logistics, and industrial input costs filter through within one to two quarters.

• The fiscal math shifts. Any sustained crude spike either widens the fiscal deficit or requires domestic price pass-through, which in turn dampens consumption and the earnings recovery.

What confirms or invalidates this risk?

The key variable is duration, not magnitude. A brief spike that de-escalates within three to four weeks leaves a recoverable scar. A sustained $90+ crude environment for a full quarter materially changes the macro framework.

That said, India’s 3QFY26 GDP at 7.8% real growth is not in question. Peter Lynch would remind us here: “Behind every stock is a company. Find out what it’s doing.” The companies serving India’s domestic consumption, infrastructure build-out, and healthcare needs are still doing the same thing they were doing three weeks ago. The macro overlay has changed. The fundamental earnings trajectories of the best businesses have not yet. That distinction matters enormously for positioning.

With that context in place, let’s look at how the market actually behaved this week.

Weekly Market Snapshot

• This week's decline is categorically different from prior weeks. Earlier weakness was sentiment-driven and contained. This week’s decline is macro-variable-driven and therefore more uncertain.

• FIIs turned net sellers to the tune of Rs 22,632 cr after two consecutive weeks of buying. This is the single most important flow signal of the week. When institutions that were beginning to return step back this sharply, it signals a genuine reassessment of India’s exposure. Right now, big money is stepping back. That matters.

• DIIs continue to provide structural support, largely driven by SIP inflows. The key question is how long retail SIP flows will remain resilient.

• BSE Capital Goods being the only green sector is not accidental. Smart money looks for certainty and defense, and infrastructure order flows remain government-backed and less sensitive to crude or global risk sentiment.

• BSE Oil & Gas, which fell 4.8% in the same week crude surged 17%, tells you exactly what the market is thinking: downstream margin compression for refiners.

• March has closed in green in each of the last five years. Seasonality does not drive decisions, but when everything else looks grim, historical context is a useful anchor.

In markets like this, the real damage isn’t volatility, it’s opportunity cost and emotional missteps.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

• The ratio collapsed from 0.45 to 0.24 in a single week. This is the sharpest single-week deterioration in this five-week series, worse than what we saw during the January sell-off.

• The recovery built from January through mid-February has been fully erased because of the latest uncertainty.

• My simple advice is: Never fight the market's prevailing condition. A ratio at 0.24 and declining is the market telling you plainly that conditions do not favour aggressive deployment. Patience is the position.

Leaders Bucket

• 136 stocks near 52-week highs, down from 197. 61 names exited in a single week is the largest single-week loss in this series.

• ATH overlap (elite strength) fell from 120 to 88. 4-week persistence dropped from 108 to 90.

• The businesses in this bucket that are showing fundamental earnings growth and holding near all-time highs amid a correction are the rarest and most valuable signals in the entire dataset.

Laggards Bucket

• 562 stocks are near 52-week lows. 169 new entrants in a single week, the largest weekly addition in this entire series. Only 49 moved out. The bucket is expanding at its fastest rate.

• 393 names have been retained week over week, meaning these stocks have been near their lows for consecutive weeks with no recovery. That is sustained, not temporary, weakness.

• Some are here because of sentiment, valuation repricing, and macro fear, not fundamental deterioration, and some because their business model is genuinely impaired. Telling the difference is the entire game.

Emerging Leaders

• 72 stocks in the emerging leaders bucket. It has fallen from a peak of 114 and has been declining for three consecutive weeks.

• 55 moved out against 34 new entrants, and retained stocks from last week fell to 38.

• This is the most important bucket for forward-looking investors. It captures businesses that have stopped falling and are beginning to build constructive price structures (base-building phase).

• The 38 retained names here will be my research shortlist for the week.

Before wrapping up, here are 3 interesting microcap / small-cap names based on corporate actions this week that I think are worth digging into.

1. Kross Ltd.

   Kross commissioned India's first axle beam extrusion plant for heavy commercial vehicles, taking monthly capacity to 8,000 units. Axle beam extrusion has historically been imported, and building it domestically at this scale is a moat-building move. With CV volumes remaining strong, a company deepening its technical capability deserves fundamental study.

2. IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals

   IOL completed capacity enhancements for Ethyl Acetate (+20%) and Acetic Anhydride (+28%), with debottlenecking on existing facilities. Cyclical companies that make disciplined, low-cost additions tend to generate disproportionate returns when the upcycle arrives. Watch out for Q4FY26 concall commentary on utilisation rates and the evolution of the product mix toward higher-margin APIs.

3. Yasho Industries Ltd

   Promoter bought Rs 3.9 cr worth of stock on the open market this week. This could be the earliest signal that the cycle may be turning from the inside. The company is coming off a debt-driven expansion phase, during which borrowings rose from ₹162 cr (FY21) to ₹583 cr (FY25), a 3.6x increase. Monitor revenue trajectory, interest expense reduction, and capacity utilisation at Pakhajan facility.

It’s what management feels the need to defend.

When companies publicly explain why a new technology won’t disrupt them, they often reveal something deeper: where the real pressure in the value chain may lie.

A recent investor presentation from TBO Tek Limited offers one such moment.

The slides themselves are not long or particularly complex. But they attempt to answer a question that many investors in travel technology are starting to ask:

If AI becomes the primary interface for travel planning, where does the true value lie in the travel ecosystem?

This question matters far beyond a single company.

It affects the entire ecosystem, from consumer travel platforms like MakeMyTrip, Yatra, Booking Holdings, and Expedia Group, to B2B Travel Distribution Platform like TBO Tek, to infrastructure providers such as Amadeus IT Group and Sabre Corporation.

If consumer interaction changes, the balance of power across these layers could shift accordingly.

The presentation does not directly say this.

But if you read between the slides, that is exactly the conversation it is trying to have.

Three Fears the Industry Is Finally Saying Out Loud

The presentation starts off interestingly.

Instead of dismissing AI disruption, it names the concerns directly.

These are the right questions to ask.

For years, travel platforms have created value through three main levers:

• distribution and discovery

• human expertise

• technology infrastructure

If AI affects all three, then it is not just another tool layered on top of the industry. It has the potential to reshape how the industry works.

But the more interesting part of the presentation is not the fears themselves.

It is the logic used to answer them.

The Central Argument: Interfaces May Change, Infrastructure May Not

Running through the presentation is a simple but important claim.

AI may disrupt the interface layer, but not the infrastructure layer.

In practical terms, that means the way travelers discover trips may change. The websites they use may change. The steps involved in searching and comparing options may disappear entirely.

But the systems that actually connect travel supply and demand will still need to exist.

The slide below illustrates this shift clearly

The slide shows a move from search engines to AI platforms as the demand channel.

Today, booking a trip typically involves a sequence of steps:

Search on Google → visit travel websites → compare options → book.

In an AI-driven world, the process could collapse into a single interaction:

Ask an AI assistant → AI queries travel inventory → booking happens automatically.

When that happens, many of the advantages consumer travel platforms rely on begin to weaken.

• Search rankings matter less.

• Marketing spend matters less.

• Even user interface design matters less.

AI does not browse web pages the way humans do. It simply pulls data from connected systems.

This is where the presentation makes its key pivot.

If interfaces become less important, where does the moat move?

The Slide That Reveals How Platforms See Their Own Moat

One slide in the deck answers that question directly.

The slide acknowledges something many technology companies are quietly confronting. AI can now do things that once required large engineering teams:

• generate interfaces

• build booking workflows

• write application logic

• connect systems together

In other words, the cost of building software is falling quickly.

For years, many digital platforms benefited from the fact that building complex software systems was difficult. If that difficulty disappears, the moat has to come from somewhere else.

The response in the presentation is subtle but telling.

Instead of defending software as the core advantage, the argument shifts toward something harder to replicate: infrastructure.

The real strength of travel platforms, the slide suggests, lies in things like:

• supplier relationships

• settlement and payment systems

• distribution networks

• compliance infrastructure

• operational support

This reframing reveals something about how parts of the travel industry want to be understood.

Not as software products.

But as market infrastructure.

And historically, infrastructure businesses tend to be more durable than interface businesses.

→ Payment networks survived waves of fintech innovation.

→ Logistics networks continued to matter even as e-commerce reshaped retail.

The natural question for investors is whether travel distribution works the same way or whether the industry may behave differently.

The Structural Risk in the Travel Value Chain

To understand that risk, it helps to step back and look at the structure of the travel industry itself. One pattern becomes clear fairly quickly.

The most powerful players in travel tend to control inventory, not distribution.

• Airlines control flights.

• Hotels control rooms.

• Cruise companies control ships.

Travel platforms sit somewhere in the middle.

For decades that middle layer has been valuable because it solved three difficult problems:

Discovery, Aggregation, and Transaction processing.

Platforms helped travelers find options, compare them across suppliers, and complete bookings through a single interface.

AI has the potential to compress those steps.

Imagine a traveler saying something like:

“Find me a beach hotel in Dubai next month under $400 and book it.”

An AI agent could theoretically query hotel APIs directly, compare options across suppliers, and execute the booking without the traveler ever opening a website.

If that interaction becomes the dominant way people plan travel, the structure of the value chain could shift.

Instead of:

Traveler → travel website → distribution platform → supplier

It might look more like:

Traveler → AI agent → supplier systems

And when interfaces change, power inside an industry often shifts with them.

Who Might Gain Power in an AI-Driven Travel Stack

If AI becomes the primary interface for planning travel, two groups may gain leverage.

The first is inventory owners.

Hotels and Airlines have long tried to regain control over distribution. Many already encourage direct bookings through loyalty programs and pricing incentives.

If AI agents can connect directly to supplier systems, that trend could accelerate.

The second group is AI interface providers.

History suggests that whoever controls the interface often captures a large share of economic value.

→ Search engines dominated web discovery.

→ App stores controlled the mobile ecosystem.

AI assistants may become the next gateway for digital services.

If travelers increasingly rely on AI to plan trips, those agents could become the first step in the booking journey.

That doesn’t mean distribution platforms disappear. But their role in the value chain may change.

Viewing the Industry Through a Risk Lens

Seen through this lens, the travel ecosystem can be divided into a few distinct layers.

Looking at the industry this way shifts the conversation.

The real question is not whether AI disrupts travel.

Travel demand will remain. People will still fly, stay in hotels, and plan trips.

The more important question is where value migrates when the interface layer changes.

What Investors Should Actually Watch

• Are travelers beginning to plan trips through AI assistants instead of travel websites?

• Are hotels and airlines opening direct APIs that reduce reliance on intermediaries?

• Are customer acquisition costs rising or margins compressing for OTA platforms?

• Are infrastructure players becoming more critical to connecting inventory and transactions?

• Most importantly: who owns the customer interaction when travel planning begins?

Why Industry Responses Like This Are Worth Reading

When companies address technological disruption publicly, they are doing two things at once.

• They are defending their current position.

• But they are also revealing how they see the future of their industry.

The presentation we examined makes one point very clearly.

It suggests that the long-term value in travel will lie less in software interfaces and more in the infrastructure that connects supply and demand.

That may prove correct. But management narratives during technological shifts are rarely neutral.

History suggests that when new interfaces emerge, value inside industries rarely stays in the same place.

→ UPI shifted power from banks to payment interfaces.

→ E-commerce marketplaces shifted power from retailers to digital shelves.

Now, AI will reshape how travel is discovered and booked.

The industry will adapt. People will still travel. Hotels will still need distribution. Airlines will still need booking systems.

But the balance of power between interfaces, infrastructure, and inventory may shift.

And for investors, it’s not the existence of travel itself but the shift that ultimately determines where long-term profits accumulate.

What makes disruption difficult for investors to predict is not the technology itself.

It’s deciding how to respond before the outcome becomes obvious.

Most investors either try to predict the future too early or wait so long that the opportunity is already gone.

Now, let’s talk about this week.

Let me sketch the setup for the week ahead.

Over the weekend, U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iran’s retaliation introduced a fresh layer of geopolitical risk that markets have yet to fully digest. The most immediate impact for India is crude, which is already at $70.8 per barrel. A sustained move toward $80 would widen the Current Account Deficit, pressure the INR, and complicate the RBI’s emerging rate-cut trajectory simultaneously.

A gap-down open is the most likely outcome on Monday. More important than the gap itself, however, is the response, whether buyers absorb the move or step aside. That reaction will reveal more about the underlying risk appetite than any index level.

That said, one data point worth noting is that March has ended in the green in the last 5 years. While seasonality alone does not drive allocation decisions, it does provide context when evaluating short-term sentiment shifts.

Weekly Market Snapshot: When the Tape Speaks, Listen

• Nifty fell 1.5% for the week, closing at 25,179. Sensex was down 1.8%. The index broke below its 200-day EMA, a level it had held comfortably through most of the past year.

• Beyond the technical signal, this level represents the market’s confidence in the durability of the current earnings cycle, and a break generally suggests that confidence is being tested.

• Mid and Smallcaps were relatively more contained, down 0.5% and 0.6% respectively. That’s a divergence worth noting. When large caps fall harder than smaller names, it usually signals institutional-led selling, not retail-driven panic.

• The real damage was in IT (–4.2%) and Realty (–4.9%). Both were top-performing sectors through December. However, that kind of reversal from sector leader to sector laggard is often a structural signal and not just a one-week blip.

• For the month, the Nifty IT Index fell nearly 20%, its sharpest decline since September 2008. Investor concerns around AI-led automation and its implications for revenue visibility and traditional service models are driving this sustained selling pressure.

• The positive surprise: Metals (+2.2%), Oil & Gas (+2.1%), Healthcare (+1.9%). These are not momentum chases. These sectors carry genuine earnings support underneath, and that distinction matters.

• Both FIIs and DIIs were net buyers this week (Rs 5,605 cr and Rs 24,312 cr, respectively). Both buying into weakness sounds constructive. However, DII buying at this scale is largely SIP-driven and not conviction-led. The more meaningful signal is whether FII buying sustains into next week.

• India’s 3QFY26 GDP print remains genuinely strong, 7.8% real growth, 8.9% nominal. Manufacturing continues to be the headline contributor. The macro is holding. What’s softening is global risk appetite, not domestic fundamentals.

The most important read from this week is not the Nifty level. It’s that the index broke below its 200-day EMA after four weeks of quiet breadth deterioration beneath the surface. In prior cycles, 2018 and 2022, this exact configuration preceded either a sustained consolidation or a sharper secondary decline. Which one plays out depends on what the bucket data tells us over the next two to three weeks.

Periods like these are also when high-quality businesses gradually return to more attractive entry zones. The goal is not to predict the turn, but to position with discipline so that when leadership re-emerges, capital is already aligned with the next phase of the cycle.

In markets like this, the real damage isn’t volatility, it’s opportunity cost and emotional missteps.

That’s exactly why the EDGE framework exists: to bring structure to what to buy, when to buy, how much to allocate, and when to exit, without second-guessing.

Now, let’s move to our EDGE tracker.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

• The ratio has declined for two consecutive weeks. That’s the first sustained downturn since the recovery began in late January.

• We had hoped to see this ratio consolidate above 0.5 and attempt a move toward 1.0. That has not happened. Instead, it has reversed.

• A ratio of 0.45 means there are roughly twice as many stocks near their 52-week lows as there are near their 52-week highs. That is not a healthy market, regardless of what the index prints.

If this ratio moves back above 0.55 next week, that would be a meaningful stabilisation signal. A continued decline toward 0.35 would suggest more pain in the coming days. The direction here matters more than the absolute number. And right now, the direction is down.

Finally, combine the ratio with the FII/DII activity to get a sense of whether they are aggressively buying the dips.

Leaders, Laggards & Emerging Bucket

Leaders Bucket

• 197 stocks remain near their 52-week high, broadly stable, but net churn is high.

• ATH overlap (elite strength) has slipped from 127 to 120. The stocks genuinely holding against the tide are beginning to thin.

• Large-cap leaders rose to 81, the highest in all five weeks tracked. Micro-cap leaders have fallen steadily from 70 to 57 over the same period.

• This divergence is a sign that capital is concentrating on the safest end of the quality spectrum.

• The 4-week persistence count of 108 shows a core group is holding and is concentrated in a select sector.

Laggards Bucket

• 442 stocks are now near their 52-week lows, up sharply from 389 last week. A single-week expansion of 53 names, the largest in this five-week series.

• New entrants were 94. Only 41 moved out. The bucket is in significant net expansion for the first time since late January.

• Large-cap laggards rose to 36, the highest since tracking began. However, the selling is more confined to micro- and small-cap stocks, but it’s slowly broadening into mainstream portfolios.

Emerging Leaders

• 93 stocks show an improving trend, down from 100 last week. Net outflow churn for the second consecutive week (41 in, 48 out).

• Retention fell from 61 to 52, i.e., stocks that had been building bases over the past three weeks are now slipping back.

• Large-cap emerging count fell from 12 to 7 in a single week. The pipeline of future leaders is thinning at the quality end as well.

• This is the most forward-looking bucket, and when it shrinks for two consecutive weeks, it signals that future leadership supply is not being replenished.

• I’d like to see this count stabilise before saying the broader trend is intact. Right now, it’s moving in the wrong direction.

Before wrapping up, I scan the buckets and weekly corporate actions to see what might be changing beneath the surface. Based on this week’s work, here are three stocks I think are worth digging into a little further.

Three Stocks Worth Digging Deeper

1. Signpost India

Signpost India won a Rs 450 Cr outdoor advertising contract from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation this week. The real thesis is that municipal outdoor advertising in India is structurally underpenetrated, and a large KMC win establishes Signpost as a credible, scaled player for similar tenders. However, the risk is execution complexity, and 10-year municipal contracts carry political and regulatory dependencies that can delay monetisation even after award.

2. Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL)

NMDC placed five separate orders with RVNL in a single week, totaling over Rs 2,600 Cr, indicating it is aggressively accelerating its mining expansion and that it has made RVNL its go-to execution partner. Though there is a concentration risk, the good part is that the multi-year revenue pipeline doesn’t need to be re-won; it just needs to be delivered on time.

3. Olectra Greentech

Received order for 1,800 electric buses from TSRTC, Rs 1,800 cr against a Rs 8,186 cr market cap, which is 22% of the current market cap. But the real thesis is replication. State RTCs watch each other, and a successful TSRTC rollout significantly increases the likelihood of similar tenders from states.

The Trap: When Yesterday's Winners Become Today's Traps

Let me take you through three charts to illustrate this,

Chart 1: Dixon Technologies

The darling of the EMS sector. From 2023 to mid-2024, the stock rewarded investors handsomely.

Then look at what happened in late 2024.

• October quarter: Nearly 100% revenue growth.

  The stock? Down 12% that day.

• Next few quarters: Growth still strong at about 75%+.
  The stock? Moved sideways and then fell another ~15%.

• Most recent quarter: Revenue growth slowed to under 3%.

Here’s the key point.

The stock had already started falling months before the slowdown showed up in the numbers.

While you were buying the dip because "fundamentals are still strong," smart money was selling.

Chart 2: Varun Beverages

Listed at around ₹25 in 2016. Went nowhere for years. Then between 2020-2024, it exploded from₹100 to ₹650+. A genuine 6x compounder.

Then, around mid-2024, something changed, and since then, the stock has been in a steady downtrend from ₹650+ to around ₹450.

And as it starts grinding downward, not recovering, and testing patience, all narratives emerge, including rising competition from Campa Cola under Reliance.

But by then, you're already down 30%.

Chart 3: Tube Investments

Another manufacturing champion: inactive from 2017 to 2021, then a 5x surge between 2021 and 2024.

Since early 2024? Stuck. Correcting. Consolidating. And two years of price erosion.

It’s still a good business, but the market no longer cares. Leadership has shifted.

Now, Let Me Show You Something Different

While everyone was complaining about market correction and underperformance over the last two years, these stocks were quietly outperforming.

Chart 1: A Public Sector Bank

For nearly a decade, this stock went nowhere. Then around 2022, something quietly shifted. The fundamentals were improving: NPA cleanup, margin expansion, and credit growth.

After years of base building, it broke out cleanly by late 2022, moving from roughly ₹150 to ₹500, followed by healthy consolidation. From early 2025, it resumed its uptrend, while most portfolios were still chasing names like Dixon and Varun Beverages.

The stock price reflected the change long before consensus caught on.

Chart 2: A Steel Products Manufacturer

From mid-2023 to early-2025, the stock consolidated while attention stayed fixed on former leaders that had already run up sharply.

Then, around mid-2025, it broke out and moved nearly 40% over the next six months, hitting fresh all-time highs even as the broader market struggled.

The rise was driven by improving product mix, operating leverage, and stronger guidance. But the market didn't wait for the story to become obvious.

The price moved first.

Chart 3: A Two-Wheeler Company

Once a darling, it went into hibernation and a long period of time correction.

By late 2023, things slowly began to improve. Market share stabilizing. New product launches. Export growth picking up.

Interestingly, even as the broader market struggled, the stock began to show relative strength, well before supportive factors like GST rate cuts entered the narrative.

By the time the story turned positive, the stock had already moved up.

The Bigger Question: Where Is Your Portfolio Positioned?

Here’s what most investors don’t want to face:

While you were complaining about market corrections for two years, these stocks were quietly compounding.

The PSU bank, the steel manufacturer, and the two-wheeler company didn’t care about the “market correction” narrative. They were in new uptrends and rewarding disciplined buyers.

But most portfolios?

Still loaded with Dixon, Varun Beverages, Tube Investments, hoping for a "comeback" buying every dip because of recency bias and the assumption that what worked in 2023 will work in 2025.

PS: I’m not saying these stocks won’t turn around. They might, even tomorrow.
But when they do, and when fundamentals begin to align with market action again, I’ll revisit them with fresh eyes.

Before moving ahead, take a moment to ask yourself two simple but important questions:

→ Is your portfolio aligned with the next set of winners?
→ Or are you still chasing old names in correction, averaging down, hoping for a recovery?

If the honest answer leans toward the latter, here’s what usually happens:

You end up fully invested in consolidating stocks, leaving you with no cash and no flexibility. While you watch the new leaders run, you sit there thinking, “But my stocks are fundamentally strong!”

Dixon Technologies grew revenue at 100%+ in October 2024. The stock fell 12% that day. Why? Because the market already knew what was coming.

The PSU bank sat at ₹150 for years while everyone chased “quality names.” Then it broke out. Today it’s at ₹900. A 6x move that most investors completely missed because they were too busy averaging down on last year’s darlings.

Weekly Market Snapshot: A Busy Week, A Calm Market (Relatively Speaking)

My Take on the Week

• This was a week that saw real volatility, both in terms of price action and announcements. Budget on Sunday, a trade deal mid-week, an RBI policy decision, and peak earnings season.

• Markets fell sharply on Budget day, breaking key resistances, then opened strongly after the trade deal announcement, only to give up a large part of those gains.

• The real question is this: is selling pressure finally behind us, or is smart money simply using these rallies to exit? There’s no hurry to answer that, time and data will tell.

• If I had to give my honest take on budget, capital expenditure discipline and fiscal restraint matter far more for long-term equity returns than one unpopular tax tweak. The noise shall eventually pass.

• The RBI kept the rates unchanged at 5.25%, along with a modest upgrade to the FY26 GDP outlook. No surprises on that front.

• Indices are up for the second week running, but it’s important to notice what’s happening beneath the surface. The broader market is clearly slowing down:

  Smallcaps +2.0% → +1.2%,

  Midcaps +2.0% → +1.6%.

  This feels like a market moving from a relief rally into a digestion phase.

• FIIs quietly turning net buyers after weeks of selling is a meaningful behavioural shift. The numbers aren’t huge yet, but the intent matters. Whether this continues is something I’ll be watching closely.

• Leadership keeps rotating week after week. That tells me investors are still unsure where durable leadership will come from. Early-cycle markets often look exactly like this, lots of movement before trends finally settle.

• Power and Realty showing up together and my guess is this has something to do with the data-centre related Budget announcement. This is a space worth tracking patiently, not chasing impulsively.

• IT had a rough week. Just when it felt like things couldn’t get much worse, developments around Claude Opus 4.6 sent fresh ripples through the sector. I’ll be honest, I am still unclear how this plays out, but the market clearly doesn’t like the uncertainty.

Now, let’s move to our EDGE tracker.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

• The Strength vs Weakness ratio has moved from 0.17 → 0.28 → 0.59 over the past three weeks. There is a clear recovery underway, and at this stage, the direction matters far more than the absolute number for me.

• What this is telling me is that market conditions are improving, but this is still a phase that calls for patience rather than urgency.

• If this trend continues and the ratio moves sustainably above 1, that’s when participation typically broadens and leadership becomes more durable. We’re not there yet but we’re also clearly not where we were a few weeks ago.

Leaders, Laggards & Emerging Bucket:

• The Leaders bucket has expanded meaningfully, with stocks near 52-week highs rising from 100 → 129 → 196. More importantly, the ATH overlap has also increased sharply (59 → 82 → 117), which tells me that a growing subset of stocks is showing elite strength.

• What stands out is the retention. A large portion of last week’s leaders are staying in the bucket, even as new names enter. That suggests leadership is not only expanding, but also beginning to stick, which is a subtle but important shift.

• The Laggards bucket has been shrinking steadily, with stocks near 52-week lows falling from 581 → 453 → 332. That’s a significant reduction in market damage over a short period.

• From Market-cap perspective, weakness continues to retreat from large and mid caps, while remaining more concentrated in microcaps.

• What’s particularly interesting in the Emerging Leaders bucket is the improvement in retention. Fewer stocks are slipping back, and a growing number are holding on.

• That said, I’d still like to see more stocks populating this bucket before calling the broader market trend strong.

Net-net, this doesn’t look like a market that’s chasing momentum. But we are clearly past the phase where everything was breaking down together for now.

Three Stocks Worth Digging Deeper

Before wrapping up, I like to scan the names in the buckets individually to see what might be changing beneath the surface. Based on this week’s work, here are three stocks that I think are worth digging into a little further.

1. Apex Frozen Foods

   With the India–EU Free Trade Agreement bringing shrimp tariffs to zero, and US tariffs on Indian shrimp coming down to 18%, a long-standing overhang on the sector has eased. More importantly, the operating environment looks far more predictable than it has in a while. With Q3 numbers due shortly, management commentary on demand visibility and margins will be key.

2. Ashok Leyland

   Despite all the broader market volatility, the stock has barely corrected and continues to make new all-time highs. When a stock refuses to fall even when the market gives it plenty of excuses, it usually deserves attention. Add to that the CV monthly dispatch numbers are consistently strong.

3. Bajaj Consumer Care

   A strong quarterly performance, but what really stood out for me was volume-led growth, not just pricing. That suggests execution is improving. I would study more closely to judge how sustainable the momentum really is.

And maybe that’s actually the best time to start tracking things more systematically.

My hope is that this newsletter and the framework we’re building around it becomes a small weekly reference point for you to gauge:

• And where potential turning points may lie

The whole idea is that by maintaining this top-level view and tracking it week after week, we can identify stocks and sectors approaching inflection points and catch them early, well before they become obvious to the broader market.

I’m keeping this first one a bit more elaborate so you understand what we’re capturing.
Future editions will be much shorter and to the point.

Weekly Market Snapshot

Most newsletters I’ve come across capture just the week’s move. But, I prefer looking at a slightly wider lens. Over time, I’ll be presenting 4-weeks trend on a rolling basis, so we can better judge direction and filter out short-term noise. I’ll start populating those going forward.

For now, a quick recap of the past two weeks:

Finally, markets staged a mild recovery after last week’s and month long correction.

FIIs remained net sellers, but the selling intensity reduced sharply. DIIs continued to provide support. To me, this signals cautious sentiment rather than panic and possibly a Budget-related wait-and-watch mode. Let’s see how it plays out.

As expected in a pre-Budget setup, Capital Goods, Power, and PSU stocks led the recovery this week. Meanwhile, IT and Auto lagged. Auto weakness is partly being linked to the Indo–EU trade deal news, which, in my view, feels like a bit of an overreaction for now.

And finally how can we miss the commodity rally. Despite a sharp ~5% correction in the BSE Metal index on Friday, the sector still doesn’t feature in the bottom three for the week, highlighting just how strong the move has been.

One more interesting observation: The consumer durables sector has featured in the bottom 3 for two consecutive weeks, something worth tracking if it continues.

With that overview, let’s move to our market insight framework.

Strength vs Weakness Ratio

In line with the recent market recovery, we are starting to see some early signs of strength building up. The ratio improved from 0.17 to 0.28 this week.

This is calculated by comparing:

The number of stocks trading within 10% of their 52-week highs versus those trading within 10% of their 52-week lows.

I prefer using a 10% band instead of exact highs or lows because it captures meaningful strength or weakness, not just one-day spikes.

The idea is simple:

• If more stocks are clustering near their highs, underlying strength is improving

• If more stocks are drifting near their lows, weakness still dominates

To keep this practical, I think of the ratio in broad zones:

• Below 0.5 → Repair phase (cautious environment)

• 0.5 to 1 → Improving phase

• Above 1 → Strong participation

• Above 2 → Potentially overheated

At 0.28, we are still in a repair phase, but the improvement from last week is a small positive.

More important than the number itself is the direction. A rising ratio suggests conditions are gradually improving even if the market isn’t strong yet.

For me, this is less a timing tool and more a market health gauge. It helps decide when to be aggressive and when to be patient.

Once I have that top-level view, I like to understand where the strength or weakness is actually sitting. To do that, I break the market into three simple buckets:

Leaders, Laggards, and Emerging Leaders.

This framework helps me answer three key questions:

• Are current leaders holding up?

• Is market damage reducing?

• Where could the next set of leaders come from?

An added benefit of this approach is that it often throws up individual names worth digging deeper into, businesses I might have otherwise missed if I were only looking at indices or headlines.

A quick note on the universe:

Our universe is defined by market cap (stocks above ₹250 cr Market Cap) and liquidity filters, not a fixed list. As stock prices and volumes change, some names naturally move in or out. This keeps the framework focused on investable and relevant stocks at all times.

Universe tracked this week: 1,450 stocks

1) Leaders Bucket: “Is leadership expanding or narrowing?”

This bucket tracks stocks trading close to their 52-week highs and all-time highs, essentially, stocks already showing strength.

As you can see, this week:

• Stocks near 52W highs rose from 100 → 129

• All Time High (ATH) overlap (elite strength) improved from 59 → 82

That’s a meaningful expansion in leadership. However, it’s also important to note that churn remains high. A large number of stocks are moving in and out of this bucket, which tells me the market is still in a phase of digestion before true, sustained leaders emerge.

What this tells me:
Strength is beginning to show up despite the weak sentiment backdrop, but leadership is still being tested.

I also like to see where this strength sits:

• Increase in micro and smallcap participation

• Large caps also inching up

This suggests risk appetite is slowly returning, not a full risk-on environment yet, but an improvement from recent weeks.

Where I focus as a long-term investor:

From a fundamental, long-term perspective, my attention naturally goes to:

• Stocks retained from last week

• Stocks showing 4-week persistence

These tend to reflect more sustained institutional interest and are often where early compounders quietly begin to form.

We’ll start tracking persistence more meaningfully as the dataset builds. And over time, we’ll also dive deeper into select individual names from these buckets within our membership cohort.

2) Laggards Bucket: “Is damage increasing or healing?”

This bucket captures stocks trading close to their 52-week lows, essentially where market stress tends to show up first.

This week, we saw a notable improvement:

• Stocks near lows reduced from 581 → 453

That’s a decent drop.

What this tells me:

Market damage is reducing. When fewer stocks are drifting toward their lows, selling pressure is easing and panic is likely behind us. That said, it’s still early, I’d like to see this trend sustain for a few more weeks before drawing any strong conclusions.

The bigger insight from this bucket, however, comes from where the weakness still sits:

• Weakness remains largely concentrated in microcaps

• Large caps are seeing fewer names in the laggard zone

This usually points to stabilization rather than stress.

Why this bucket matters to me is because it helps me stay cautious. When a sector repeatedly shows up here, it often signals:

• A structural slowdown, or

• A prolonged sentiment overhang

As long-term investors, we naturally want to associate ourselves with strength. The weakest names tend to appear in this bucket first and tracking them helps avoid unnecessary risk.

Interestingly, the reverse is also true. As this bucket shrinks, it often gives a higher-level sense of where strength may be building elsewhere in the market.

For me, this bucket is less about stock selection and more about getting the bigger picture right.

3) Emerging Leaders: “Where is the next wave forming?”

This is my favourite bucket.

These are stocks that are:

• Trending above key moving averages

• Showing improving price structure

• But not yet trading near their highs

In other words, they’re early, not obvious.

This week, in line with the broader market trend, we saw a sharp expansion in this bucket.

• Emerging leaders jumped from 46 → 90

That’s a meaningful rise and suggests that more stocks have stopped falling, are consolidating, and beginning to form healthier bases.

What this tells me:

The pipeline for future leaders is starting to build. As this bucket expands, it often signals that momentum is gradually picking up and the market may be entering an early leadership phase.

That said, my focus is not just on numbers.

What I’m especially keen to track are:

• Stocks showing 4-week persistence in this bucket

• Stocks that graduate from Emerging Leaders into the Leaders bucket

Those transitions usually point to real, sustained strength rather than short-term moves.

This is often where early compounders quietly begin to reveal themselves.

Wrapping up this week

If I step back and look at everything together:

• Strength is beginning to build, though still early

• Market damage is reducing, but not yet fully healed

• The pipeline of emerging leaders is expanding

This doesn’t signal a full risk-on phase yet, but it does suggest the market is quietly trying to find its footing.

Weekly Verdict: Early signs of repair, leadership improving selectively, patience still warranted.

• Then, I track persistence, whether it continues to show up week after week

• Finally, I go deeper into the business to understand why the market might be paying attention

Most names don’t make the cut.

“Leaders of previous bull market rarely lead the next.”

But the bigger question is: does the data actually support this? And more importantly, if it’s true, what does that mean for how we invest today?

Right now, the market is quiet. And quiet markets are the best time to learn, plan, and get ready, so that when the next bull run begins, we’re not just watching, we’re prepared to act.

That’s why, I’ve spent the past few days studying Motilal Oswal’s annual Wealth Creation Studies, analyzing the most consistent compounders across rolling 5-year periods from 2010 to 2025.

What I found didn’t just confirm the saying, but it revealed a clear pattern. A rhythm of changing market leadership and quietly, it pointed toward where to look next.

By the way Motilal Oswal classifies wealth creators into Biggest, Fastest, and Most Consistent.
For this exercise, I leaned toward consistent compounders. Fastest movers can sometimes be one-cycle stories, but consistency usually signals real business strength and sustained momentum.

To make sense of the shifts, I split the data into two distinct eras: Pre-Covid (2010–2019) and Post-Covid (2016–2025).

Pre-Covid (2010–2019)

Post-Covid (2016–2025).

Here is what stood out:

• Pre-Covid Era (2010–2019) was dominated by consumer goods, pharma, and banking—steady, predictable compounders like Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, HDFC Bank, and Nestle. These were the classics, the “buy and forget” stories.

• Post-Covid Era (2016–2025) saw a dramatic pivot toward infrastructure, specialty chemicals, green energy, and digital services with names like Adani Enterprises, SRF, Alkyl Amines, and Coforge making the cut.

• What’s fascinating isn’t just the change in sectors, it is the total absence of pre-Covid leaders in the post-Covid top 10. The market didn’t just evolve; it reinvented its leadership.

• A few names like SRF, Asian Paints, Titan, and Adani Enterprises show up more than once within the same cycles in the study.. This shows that quality + timing + sector tailwinds create repeat compounders.

• The average 5-year CAGR in recent cycles (~55–64%) is nearly double that of earlier periods (~27–36%). This surge seems to correct a decade of underperformance in capex-heavy sectors. It will be fascinating to see if this high growth sustains or reverts to the mean.

But what most studies don’t show you is that if you look at the charts, these compounders were quietly building momentum 3–4 years before they ever appeared on a top 10 compounders list. By the time they were recognized, much of the move was already done.

This pattern becomes even clearer when we look at real examples. Let me take three stocks that illustrate this perfectly: SRF, Adani Enterprises, and Varun Beverages.

Each one delivered multibagger returns and later appeared in the Motilal Oswal study.

SRF – SRF’s journey shows two distinct waves: a rally from ~50 in 2012 to ~280 in 2015, followed by years of consolidation, then a second explosive move from ~500 in 2019 to ~2500 in 2022. Each wave coincided with sectoral tailwinds.

Insight: Even great companies don’t move in straight lines. They rise, consolidate, build momentum, and then surge again, often when the sector cycle turns.

Adani Enterprises – From 2020 to 2022, Adani Enterprises delivered a CAGR of whopping 97%. But take a look closer: the stock had been consolidating for nearly a decade before its parabolic rise.

Insight: Parabolic moves are usually preceded by long, quiet periods of accumulation. The hardest time to buy is often when it feels easiest.

Varun Beverages – A non-cyclical FMCG stock, Varun Beverages still saw a powerful 3-year run from 2021 to 2024. Again, the pattern holds: slow buildup, strong momentum, recognition, then consolidation.

Insight: Even “slow” compounders have periods of acceleration. Missing those windows means missing most of the returns.

From these three examples and honestly, if you analyse all the names, the pattern is quite similar.

As highlighted in yellow, I tried to mark the closest point on the chart when these stocks would have entered the study. By then, each had already delivered meaningful multibagger returns. In many cases, 70–80% of the move had already happened before they showed up in the study.

Which naturally leads to three important questions we should be asking ourselves:

1. How do you spot these before they arrive at the Motilal study ?

2. How do you stay invested during parabolic runs without getting shaken out?

3. How do you exit without leaving profits on the table?

Another interesting observation: most of these companies don’t appear in the study for more than 2–3 consecutive years.

And this is where most investors struggle. We end up either:

• Entering too early and losing patience, or

• Entering too late and chasing momentum

And here’s my real takeaway:

I genuinely think if we can identify just 2–3 structural winners in each cycle, we’re more than set. We don’t need to catch everything.

We just need to find the right businesses at the right time and more importantly, stay with them through their compounding phase.

Of course, it’s easier said than done.

So why do most of us still end up missing them?

1. We fall in love with past winners

   We keep going back to yesterday’s leaders, while new sectors quietly take the spotlight.

2. We wait for the “perfect” entry

   By the time we’re convinced, the stock has already run 100–200%. Early strength is sometimes the only real signal.

3. We ignore sector rotation

   Macro shifts create new leaders. If we miss the sector, we usually miss the biggest winners too.

4. We sell compounders too early

   We happily book 30–50% gains, but the real wealth often comes from the 300–500% moves that follow.

5. We track too many stocks

   Our attention gets spread across 20–30 names instead of going deeper on 2–3 high-conviction ideas.

Sound familiar?

In my experience, it’s rarely a knowledge problem.
More often, it’s a process problem.

This is exactly what I’m trying to fix with the Early Edge Cohort

These are stocks that are not in the leaders list yet not in the laggards either
but they’re starting to show early signs of strength and trend improvement.

This bucket tells us:
Where the next set of winners might be building bases right now.

Most real estate companies came out with the usual “steady progress” updates, nothing exciting. But Embassy’s update was different. It felt like something was finally moving.

I’ve followed Embassy (the old Indiabulls Real Estate) on and off for years since the merger announcement, but at some point I stopped tracking it closely. The story became too long and messy, a 5-year long process with name changes, reverse merger complexity, and NCLT/NCLAT approval delays.

But now that most of that noise is out of the way, the company is back on my radar and what really pulled me in again was the valuation gap.

I clearly remember the company did a preferential issue at ₹111 in early 2025, but today the stock trades around ₹61.5. Recently, there was also news about Canara Bank taking them to court, and the stock briefly fell to ₹57. From what I understand, this issue relates to the erstwhile promoter, Indiabulls.. Anyway, these combination made me curious:

Is the market overreacting… or is there something structurally wrong?

Around the same time, I was reminded of another company with a similar “forgotten” feel: DB Realty, which demerged its real estate and hospitality businesses and renamed itself Valor Estate.

There wasn’t any major negative news here off late, but the stock corrected heavily in the broader market fall, from ~₹210 levels a few months ago to around ₹104 today.

And both these companies have one thing in common: They sit on huge land banks.

So I started thinking: if the land value is even partly real and monetisable, this could actually be an interesting contrarian bet and it seemed like change was slowly happening, and this was the perfect time to dig in.

In this blog, I’ll give you a big-picture view. To understand the discount these companies trade at, I’m comparing them with DLF, mainly because DLF has successfully converted its land bank into predictable cash flows over the last decade.

Embassy and Valor are still in the “conversion phase” with legacy issues, and the real question is: can they do what DLF did?

A Side-by-Side Snapshot: DLF vs Embassy vs Valor

1) Market Snapshot

2) Scale & Asset Base

The biggest advantage Embassy and Valor have is their land bank. How prudently management executes and develops these assets will decide how much re-rating potential is actually possible.

Valuation

Finally, let’s look at how much value is embedded in Embassy and Valor on a very conservative basis. For this, I’ve used the estimates, land bank disclosures, and guidance shared by management.

1. Embassy Developers

In the table below I have taken a fully conservative, base assumption SOTP values.

I have intentionally:

→ valued only a limited near-term development bucket
→ treated commercial as selective annuity only
→ assumed a surplus margin of 18% (vs management’s net operational cash margin of ~46.6%)
→ valued land on a very conservative basis (using publicly available online data and applying a further discount)
→ applied a 70% haircut on the Nashik land bank (option value only)
→ subtracted the full net institutional debt

This means that at a market cap of ~₹8,550 Cr, the stock is trading close to ~22% discount to its base value of ~₹10,480 Cr (based on a conservative execution scenario), while still carrying meaningful upside optionality.

2. Valor Estate Ltd

Like before, the table below reflects a fully conservative, base-assumption SOTP for Valor Estate.

Here as well, I have intentionally:

→ valued only the visible project profit pool (FY25–FY31) without giving any premium.
→ gave only partial credit to the annuity business (assumed rentals reach only 40% of the full FY31 potential)
→ the land bank is valued at only ₹6 Cr/acre (MMR land can be worth significantly more depending on location and approvals).
→ applied a higher execution buffer to account for timing + complexity
→ keept the discount rate meaningfully higher than Embassy to reflect a tougher execution profile.

I used a 14% discount rate for Valor to penalise timeline risk, since a lot of the monetisation depends on JVs. The goal was to ensure the upside still exists even after applying a tougher filter.

With a current market cap of ~₹5,530 Cr versus a conservative base-case value of ~₹8,300 Cr, the stock trades at a ~50% discount to estimated value.

Finally, no investment is risk-free and being clear about the risks is just as important as spotting value. Here are some common risks across both Embassy and Valor that I’d keep in mind:

Key risks to watch (Embassy + Valor)

• Execution risk (the big one): Land bank looks great on paper, but value only unlocks if launches, sales, and deliveries actually happen on time.

• Promoter pledge and leverage can create pressure during weak cycles and amplify volatility.

• If bookings slow or pricing weakens, cash flows and timelines can stretch.

• Geography concentration:

  • Valor is largely Mumbai/MMR dependent (higher complexity).

  • Embassy is concentrated in a few key pockets like Bengaluru + Mumbai + NCR.
    A regional slowdown can hurt more than expected.

• RERA approvals, CC/OC timelines, and local clearances can push launches out and markets don’t like uncertainty.

• Land isn’t automatically valuable unless it converts into cash. Sometimes “optional value” stays optional for years.

• Any disputes or litigation can keep sentiment weak even if fundamentals improve.

• Past baggage, governance signals and disclosures need to be tracked closely.

• The biggest risk in “cheap” stocks is getting stuck early while better opportunities move ahead.

Final Thoughts

In both Embassy and Valor, I’m not trying to predict the exact intrinsic value. Rather I’m trying to answer a simpler question:

Even after assuming delays, haircuts, and conservative margins do these stocks still trade at a meaningful discount to their asset value?

And based on my estimates, yes, they do look cheap.

But here’s the thing, I still wouldn’t take huge positions in them yet.

And the reason is simple (something I’ve learned and refined over the years):
just because an investment looks cheap on paper doesn’t mean you need to buy it today.

For me, valuation and fundamentals are only one part of the puzzle.

But before I buy, I like to see signs of:

• accumulation

• strength building up in the sector

• improving price action

• and confirmation that management is actually executing

Because the worst outcome isn’t being wrong, it’s being early and getting stuck. The opportunity cost is just too high.

What I try to do instead is study as many good businesses as possible, and act only when the price action starts showing real strength.
