In other words, it’s hot enough on the East Coast that the only thing I want to wear is breezy cotton that does all of the styling for me with zero fuss. My getting-ready routine has become, quite literally, throw on a dress (or matching cotton set), add a bag, sunglasses, and I’m out the door. Very little thought required, which is exactly what I want when it’s 90 degrees with 80% humidity.

While Doen has become infamous with this sort of romantic summer dressing, they’re certainly not the only brand doing it well. There are plenty of others making beautiful cotton pieces with the same effortless feeling. Some that may even hold up a bit better over time (if you know, you know).

Be forewarned: much of this style of dressing takes its inspiration from nightwear. Fortunately, we've collectively decided that's acceptable.

A sleepwear brand that understands the demand for nightgown silhouettes during the day time and offers different thicknesses of their fabrics to accommodate sheerness.

Sun protection has become one of those subjects that I care perhaps a little too much about. Partly because I am ghostly white, partly because skin cancer (and aging, God forbid) is a thing. But mostly because after enough summers spent lying awake in bed with stinging shoulders and watching countless people have suspicious spots biopsied, it starts to get real. Like most people, I used to think one bad sunburn every summer was simply part of the experience. Eventually I learned my lesson.

These days, sunscreen lives permanently in my bag. And by “sunscreen,” I mean at least three different versions of it. One for my face, one for my body, and one specifically because I refuse to smear another layer of cream over makeup halfway through the day.

Before getting into what I wear to stay protected during the warmer months, I thought I’d share the products that have become permanent fixtures in my routine and ones that I swear by through weeks of research and testing.

Face SPF

As someone who hates the smell and feeling of sunscreen, EltaMD UV Daily Tinted SPF was my gateway drug. Between the tinted and untinted versions, I would estimate I’ve gone through close to ten bottles. It remained my favorite until I stumbled upon DRMTLGY, which has undoubtedly become my everyday staple. The formula is extremely similar to EltaMD and is slightly easier on the wallet. The Universal Tinted SPF has just enough pigment that I rarely feel the need to wear anything else on my skin during the day. It evens everything out without looking like makeup, which is exactly what I want nine times out of ten. Occasionally I’ll mix in a pump of the Sachu Beauty Liquid Glow Stay-In. It has an incredibly fine shimmer that adds a little more dimension without crossing into glitter territory.

If I’m heading out in the evening and want something with a touch more coverage while keeping that same luminous finish, I’ve been reaching for the U Beauty Super Tinted Hydrator (use code SYDNEYW20 for 20% off!). It has a very similar look on the skin and layers beautifully.

And for anyone who prefers something untinted (or simply doesn’t want to spend quite as much), these are a few other favorites that have earned a permanent spot in the rotation: ISDIN, Prequel (favorite for working out or running outdoors), and Beauty of Joseon.

Reapplication

If there’s one thing I despise, it’s reapplying sunscreen to my face with a traditional lotion once I’ve already done my makeup. Rubbing sunscreen over concealer and blush halfway through the day is simply not something I’m going to do. Instead, I almost always reach for a mist. It’s significantly easier, doesn’t disturb my makeup, and because of that, I actually remember to reapply. Depending on where I’m headed, how long I’ll be outside, and what the UV index looks like that day, one of the following inevitably ends up in my bag:

I have one option that doubles as a setting spray but was sadly discontinued so I recommend this one instead, one with added glow and a very fine mist, and my body/face option that I will elaborate on further.

Body

I am incredibly particular about body sunscreen.

If it feels sticky, smells overwhelmingly like sunscreen, or leaves me questioning whether it’s ever going to dry down, I immediately freak out, for a lack of better terms. God forbid I risk it staining my clothes.

I’ve tried what feels like every body sunscreen available, and I continue coming back to Japanese formulations. Biore UV Aqua Rich remains my favorite of everything I’ve ever tried. It absorbs almost immediately, has virtually no scent, and somehow manages to disappear into the skin without leaving that heavy film most body sunscreens have. One thing worth noting is that there are several different formulations floating around. If possible, I always recommend buying the Japanese version.

When I found out Biore made the same formula in a spray, I genuinely felt like all of my sunscreen prayers had been answered. I still think the lotion absorbs a touch better, and the spray has a slightly stronger scent, but it’s become my preferred option for reapplying throughout the day. I keep both the lotion and spray in my car and the spray in every bag for reapplication. Pro tip: keep your sunscreen by your keys as a reminder to apply before you head out! I order both the lotion and spray from Stylevana.

For pool or beach days, I almost always keep the chemical Trader Joe’s spray sunscreen or Supergoop! Play nearby. Both provide great protection across the whole UVA range and are mild in texture and scent. This is another great lotion and another great spray.

Hats

If I know I’ll be spending a significant amount of time outside, I’m almost always wearing some version of a hat. My current favorite is the Janessa Leone Colette. It’s become my default beach and vacation hat and provokes my family to call me a pilgrim… Next on my list is this one from TWP, which has been patiently sitting in my bookmarks for months because it has a tie is doesn’t seem prone to flying off my head.

Swimwear... eventually

I haven’t fully entered my swim-shirt era just yet, with the exception of occasionally stealing one of Nick’s rash guards, but I can feel myself getting closer every summer. I just need to embody Anne Hathaway to a fuller extent.

Kaftans, tunics, kimonos galore

Kaftans are having a well-deserved moment, and rightfully so. They’re one of those pieces that somehow make getting dressed after the beach feel “slob chic”. They also happen to provide another easy layer of sun protection without feeling heavy.

Button-downs

This probably comes as no surprise that throwing on a button down is my unofficial summer uniform. Whether I’m wearing a tank or a swimsuit there’s almost always an oversized cotton or linen button-up layered over the top because of their breathability and protection between me and the sun.

A particularly big shout out to the brand , who makes actually cute (hard to come by) UPF clothing. This button down has been my go to and ends up on my body multiple times a week. They have a wonderful tunic and a caftan, which is heavily on my wishlist.

Scarves

A scarf in the middle of summer sounds slightly counterintuitive, but I will continue standing on my soapbox about this. If you’re not a button-down person, or simply want another way to add a layer without wearing another shirt, a lightweight scarf draped over your shoulders is one of my favorite tricks.

For the hotter days:

I completely fell in love with this one from Toteme while wearing almost the exact outfit pictured previously.

I’ll still be the person pulling three different sunscreens out of my bag every time someone mentions the UV index, but at least now my wardrobe has started doing part of the work for me.

All of the furniture we own is secondhand (with the exception of our bed, mattress, rug, curtains, and two lamps), which feels like a lot when I list it out…

We’re moving in three weeks, which has made me hyper-aware of everything we’ve accumulated so far. Or more accurately, everything I’ve found as the self-proclaimed Facebook Marketplace queen. I tend to know what I want, and then I search for it. For weeks, sometimes months. Case in point: the chinoiserie divider panel I became fixated on and refused to replace with anything else. I was determined to find one that spoke to me, so when I did, I knew immediately.

This has made me think about how a home actually comes together. Is it curated through inspiration, or instinct?

I’m not an interior designer. I’m not a furniture expert. I’m a graphic designer, which means I spend most of my time looking at references, pulling inspiration, and thinking about composition. And while that’s helpful in theory, it can also make everything feel overwhelming very quickly. Which is why, outside of my 9–5, I do very little scrolling and opt for approaching anything creative with a mindset outside the constraints of branding decks and typographical hierarchy.

That being said, your home doesn’t have to be aesthetic. It doesn’t have to match. It doesn’t have to look like something you saved on Pinterest and if anything, it probably shouldn’t. Yes, Pinterest is helpful. It’s useful for understanding scale, color palettes, proportions. But it shouldn’t be the final reference point.

When you’re constantly exposed to new visuals, new spaces, new aesthetics (i.e. doom scrolling on Pinterest), it becomes difficult to understand what you actually like versus what you’ve just seen recently. So how are you supposed to curate a home when your taste feels like it changes every few months? I’ve realized it comes down to pattern recognition and understanding your past and who you are today. The same can be said about your taste in general.

“Taste” is just an abstract term for the pattern of things you find instantly beautiful, without context or outside influence. The things you search for, not because you saw them styled perfectly somewhere, but because they make sense to you. And understanding that instinct and reflecting on it feels like the most important part.

I’ve always been particular about my space. Growing up, I was a very anxious child who coped by cleaning and organizing. That hasn’t changed- I am the designated “come over and help me organize” family member. I used to rearrange my room constantly. Sometimes at 2 a.m., moving around furniture that had no business being moved by one person (i.e. my wood bunkbed).

Fun fact about me: my childhood home was filled with Buddhas and loosely interpreted feng shui principles.

Looking back, all of that feels pretty telling as to why I’m drawn to the styles and pieces I am, and how that has carried into the way I live now.

When we first moved, I started with a few grounding pieces that could work across a multitude of styles while keeping visual clutter to a minimum, like our white Crate & Barrel Willow II sofa and the Zara Home tripod lamp, and then slowly built around them with pieces that have more character: A dresser I refurbished into our media console with antique brass drawer pulls, old Turkish vases, and a set of 19th-century milking stools.

I think I’m just trying to control how much visual noise I live with, while still surrounding myself with objects that feel beautiful and a reflection of me and my life.

By no means is my current home, also known as our one-bedroom apartment, a perfectly curated space. It’s not a collection of “right” pieces. But one of my favorite parts of living with my boyfriend is that he also takes his time with what he brings into the space (which is both a pro and a con). Sometimes things require convincing. Other times, he comes home to a new Facebook Marketplace find that I picked up while he was on a work trip (ily honey).

Your home should be a reflection of you, filled with things that feel like love at first sight. Filled with the things that bring you joy.

Donni, Clyque, and Deiji

My go-to pants are the Donni Simple Pop Pant and the Clyque Kira Pant. I’ve had both hemmed, the Donni more aggressively, with the idea that I can wear them higher on the waist for a cropped ankle, or lower without them dragging.

Deiji Studios makes a great alternative to the Donni pant, but with pockets. I did find the pockets slightly visible in the white, so I’ll likely go back for the black. Not poplin but a big fan.

My “non-button up poplin top go-to” (a mouthful) is the Clyque Tauni and is the perfect addition to any poplin on poplin moment.

Other standouts from Clyque: this button-down and the Tauni maxi dress (alt). The Kira in navy is also on my list for summer.

These three brands have become my most worn and most repurchased. I’ve found they offer a wide range of poplin options, making it easy to mix and match cohesive cuts and colors while staying cool in the summer. They’re becoming everyone’s staples for a reason.

Leset

Leset needs no introduction. The Kyoto Pant in Cypress has been on my list for a while… just waiting for my size to come back in stock.

If you’re looking for an alternative, the Clyque Hunter Pant (same as the Kira, just with more pockets). Very similar silhouette to the Kyoto’s but with less cargo detail. Banana Republic just launched their contender.

Claudent

Not poplin, but continuing the sun protection theme as the weather warms up, my most recent purchase is this button-up from . They are L.A.- based and use UPF-rated fabrics. Two of my favorite things: sun protection and a good button-up. Ideal.

Something to Hold

I’ve recently discovered Something to Hold and have heard great things. My picks would be this button-up and this blouse that could easily double as a sleep situation. They do a great job with that Dôen-esque, slightly farmhouse feel. There are also plenty of linen options that make sense for summer. I particularly love how many of their styles come in multiple fabrics.

Comme Si

Comme Si is a classic for loungewear. Waiting on this button-up to come back in stock. They also make a great boxer-style pant for summer- a natural extension of their shorts (back in stock).

Suzi Kondi

Suzi Kondi released a full poplin capsule: Button ups, tops, skirts, dresses, pants, shorts. Worth looking at if you’re committing to the fabric this season. Balloon poplin!

Sessei

Sessei is known for perfectly oversized, crisp button-downs that can be embroidered. Very good and very reliable.

Baserange

Baserange has a unique take on proportions and shape. Sleep option.

Ozma of California

Ozma is California comfy-chic through and through. Slightly reminiscent of Buck Mason in its creative direction and color palette, but I digress. The Marcie shirt and the All Day pant are the standouts. I’m eyeing the Marcie in navy and khaki.

Statement pants for spring/summer have long been on my mind. Specifically Taffeta. Chan Luu is doing a phenomenal job with all of these bad boys. Balloon pants have also been making a come back for the last two years or so. Some great options are Reformation (this option with a similar silhouette), a linen option from Massimo (thicker/more opaque), a luxurious option from Alfalo, a simple option, and one full of drama.

Best of both worlds? Hands down this Taffeta-Balloon hybrid pair from Suzi Kondi. These look promising and are their way to me as we speak.

This week in the mail:

Clyque Tommy pant (LONGGGG awaited) and The Era James pant. The Tommy pant is 69% triacetate/31% polyester and the James pant is 68% triacetate/32% polyester. That being said, they feel nearly identical. Same weight, same drape. Dare I say, even the cut and stitching are almost indistinguishable. I could go on.

Side note: I will be wearing the Steffi tee every single day.

And finally, my newest bag endeavor: The Spaghetti bag from Valesque (in stock here!! The tote version, orange, and pink for a little spring moment). Definitely one of the “it-bags” for spring. Right out of the box, I could tell this one’s about to be my go-to. It’s super low-fuss on the body, effortlessly chic, and just the right size to carry all the essentials without feeling bulky. This one reminds me of The Row Cecily Bag.

• The creative direction for the new Doen x Garrett Leight sunglasses campaign has been fantastic. Very 1950s-1960s Retro European Riviera. These are my pick.

• Searching for a new button down to throw over top of my quick outfits. is pioneering this look for spring. Here are some contenders thus far: Everlane, Andie Swim, Alex Mill and Zara men.

• Leset New-trals: on my wishlist, one of my favorite lounging tops to wear around the house.

• Wearing these flats to the office everyday. Very similar to The Row ballet flats.

• If you take anything from this Substack at all, let it be this: As the biggest sunscreen-aholic, I prematurely restocked on my favorite body sunscreen (Japanese version of Biore UV) for non-swimsuit days. I recommend shopping for it on Stylevana or YesStyle. It is completely undetectable on the skin, so there are zero sensory issues for everyday use. Most importantly, it doesn’t transfer onto clothes or bags! It also comes in a spray version, which I stocked up on as well (Target). Perfect for carrying around in your purse.

Fashion month wrapped with editors and celebrities wearing spring 2026 to fall/winter 2026–2027 runways, plus more utility jackets than anyone could reasonably need, so the shift spring finally feels official and socially acceptable. And frankly, nothing changes the mood of a wardrobe faster than swapping wool for cotton.

Speaking of cotton, I tried on Toteme’s Crisp Summer trench a few weeks ago (read more here) and it has been on my mind ever since. The Clay color comes across more green-toned in person, so if that is not your jam, I suggest going for the black. I, myself, am fawning over the black.

The girls are shifting from henleys to polos and I am here for it. Cashmere for winter, cotton for spring/summer. Here are two more more heat-friendly options. Love this option because they offer embroidery!

Our day started bright and early Friday morning — and, to our dismay, very rainy. We detoured to the Upper East Side with the goal of scouting my next bag from The Row. Fortunately for me, we first stumbled into Toteme.

NYFW had a wonderful display of spring/summer jackets, several of which caught my eye. Toteme’s summer trench has been on my mind for a while, so I had to try it on.

We made our way over to The Row store. I LOVE the smoked taupe shade of the bags and have been trying to get my hands on the N/S Medium Park Tote from the Fall/Winter 2025 collection.

Before heading back to meet our friends for lunch and drinks, we made one last stop at Le Labo to pick up a hand cream in my all-time favorite scent.

Saturday: pizza for breakfast at L’Industry. Ordered everything. Millefoglie, 10/10. No notes.

West Village wandering → Dôen → LESET.

I’ve had these items in my cart for a little bit now- The Margot long sleeve, Lauren high waist straight leg pant, Rio pant, and Kyoto Carpenter pant. I wasn’t in love with either pairs of lounge pants but absolutely loved the Kyoto pant. Naturally, they were out stock in my size and color. Sad face.

Dinner was at my favorite restaurant in the city: Double Chicken Please. Hot take? I am partial to savory cocktails and this place is known for their food-inspired drinks.

Hopped over to Banzarbar then finished the night at The Ripple Room — chic, 70s energy, lots of laughing.

Outfit 1

If you understand nothing else about Carolyn Bessette, understand this: she repeated outfits. And the show gets that right.

This is the outfit she throws on that first chaotic morning and walks through the city on her way to work at Calvin Klein. Black turtleneck, black cigarette trousers, loafers (these are not as square as what she wears in the show), and a structured tote. My favorite little detail in this show so far is that this outfit appears again later in the episode, unchanged. They only show it for a second or two, but that quick reappearance says everything. Rewearing outfits is realistic, and choosing to show that on screen makes the character feel lived-in instead of styled.

Outfit 2

It is worth noting that just before this outfit appearance, at the party where Carolyn and John first meet, she is in a strapless, structured black dress. It holds its shape and does not flow. It does not have the softness of a satin bias cut. Her character is uninterested and guarded in this dress at the party- so when he asks for her number, she refuses.

Then we get the Indian restaurant.

This is what she wears on their first date. A bias cut black slip dress with barely there heels. Still apart of her minimal and all black looks so far, but noticeably softer.

On the podcast, Pidgeon says, “Depending on the structure of the garment… if it’s some sort of slinky dress, you hold yourself differently.” And you can see that shift immediately. This is another office uniform from later in the episode. A crisp white button down tucked into a black pencil skirt with a back slit. She is rewearing the same loafers from Look 1, which makes the outfit feel even more realistic and true to Carolyn’s capsule style.

This outfit is worn in the scene showing that she is excelling at her job and beginning to get noticed by Calvin Klein himself. The outfit reflects that momentum in it’s sharpness. This outfit is what we consider to be peak 90s Calvin Klein-style office wear.

If 2025 was the year I learned what I actually reach for, then 2026 is the year of intentional purchases. Not more clothes, but rather, better ones. Pieces chosen with patience, clarity, and enough restraint to leave room for real life: trips, weddings, last-minute plans that require something special instead of something practical. This isn’t a shopping spree. It’s a working list- items I’m actively hunting for, some secondhand, and only buying if they earn their place. The goal is the same as last year: to make getting dressed feel easier, not busier.

I already have several pants in my capsule-ish wardrobe that I genuinely love and reach for constantly: numerous pairs of Levi’s 90s 501s, Agolde Harper jeans, and the Aritzia Lodge Pant (again, numerous pairs), which I wear to work on repeat because they’re crepette, polished, and another example of my favorite category of clothing: feels like pajamas, reads like an outfit. These aren’t going anywhere. Everything I add into my wardrobe is meant to complement what’s already working, not overhaul it.

When it comes to tops, I’m leaning further into elevated basics. Things I can wear comfortably but not too comfortable for the office. Pieces I can rely on to be multipurpose. The Flore Flore Esme tank, Dinah tank, and Max tee have officially won me over. After buying the Dinah turtleneck, I understood the appeal immediately. These are the kinds of basics that feel very clean cut on their own and even better layered.

The Toteme cropped utility jacket falls into this category as well. It’s light, structured, and ideal for spring easy over a tee, tank, or light knit. I have never been a jacket-person because if it is cold enough to wear one, I much rather reach for a chunky sweater. This is my attempt to break out of my old ways. But I digress… This jacket was from a few seasons ago and is really only available secondhand. I have an offer on one via Vestaire Collective, so fingers crossed she’s mine. This one is a great alternative, a different color with limited sizes in stock, one from Everlane that is very similar, as well as this one from COS.

For bottoms, I’m eyeing the Reformation Vida low rise pant, the LESET Barb wide leg, and the LESET Kyoto carpenter pant because they feel relaxed but considered and comfortable without tipping into casual. I have the classic pair of black trousers, and let me tell you…they’re boring. The Reformation pair borders on a bias-cut pant and with the added low-rise, is flattering on my body type (aka, criminally short-torso’ed)

I’m also slowly reintroducing skirts into my rotation. My go-to is this Wardrobe NYC skirt (alt, Poshmark), but I have been meaning to upgrade to something more sleek and 90’s inspired. The Rue Sophie Desy zip-slit pencil skirt will do just that.

I’m drawn to multifunctional pieces that can shift depending on how they’re styled. The DÔEN Ischia dress (super late to the party, partially due to the fact that I already own too many black dresses), whom I found on TRR and am waiting for it to go on sale, is a perfect example: worn with the Jessica Leone hat, which was my first purchase of 2026, and flip-flops (favs)- it feels laid-back and effortless, but add a pair of heels (dupe!) and it immediately reads more polished. The same goes for the DÔEN Helaine dress. Both double beautifully as cover-ups as well (very inspired), which makes them feel even more worth owning.

I’m also considering the Faithfull Soleil white maxi (unfortunately out of stock for the season but they have this beautiful bordeaux color with slightly more fitted sleeves that I am heavily considering, also black), a multi seasonal warm-weather piece that feels easy and wearable.

Another inspired pick, the Loro Piana Rebecca flats feel like a true investment in timelessness. I am not a heel girl unless the occasion truly calls for it ( cue dreading the 2026-2027 wedding spree), so these will do the trick to help me push 5’5. I refrain from investing a pretty penny in everyday-wear shoes, but something tells me I would wear these more elegantly than my everyday boot. Speaking of which, the Tony Bianco Rupert boot is practical dupe for the Khaite Marfa, while the Tony Bianco Martinez flat is another thoughtful alternative to a Row favorite. For everyday movement or trips that require 20,000 steps, I’m considering these Toteme sneakers, with an eye out for The Row Owen sneakers secondhand if I happen to find them.

Bags and accessories are where I’m allowing myself the most patience. The Row Medium Park tote in taupe (or white) and the Nuance bag have both lived on my list for a long time. Would it be glutenous of me to dare mention the Peggy Clutch? I’m in no rush- they’re pieces I want to buy once and live with for years. I’ve also been searching for the Row Kelly sunglasses from an older season, but I’m equally drawn to the House of Dagmar round or oval styles.

To wrap things up: As I previous stated, the Jessica Leone Colette hat was my first purchase of 2026. It hasn’t been delivered yet, which makes me question if I should have gotten the Waverly style because I fear the sun on my face…but it was on sale so maybe it’s a sign! Lastly, I’m keeping swim minimal and intentional. I have two bikinis in my rotation that I consistently resort back to and am in need of a new style that isn’t black. I am eyeing the ÉTERNE Kaia one-piece (alt) or this one from Anemos. Alternatively for some color, I enjoy this one from Oas.

That being said, these are the pieces that carried me through this year.

The Belt That Changed My Outfits.

My Ralph Lauren concho belt is, without exaggeration, one of the most impactful things I added to my wardrobe this year. I was never one for flashy accessories (not to say this belt is particularly flash, but rather outside of my comfort zone), but seeing other creators such as dress this belt up and down in a multitude of ways taught me three things: that an accessory doesn’t have to be loud to be transformative, that I didn’t need to abandon my minimalist instincts to make an outfit feel considered, and that restraint and statement aren’t mutually exclusive. It has weight to it, physically and visually, and it instantly grounds even the simplest outfit. Jeans and a white tee suddenly feel intentional and somehow upscale? Smaller version here.

Pants I Built My Uniform Around.

The Donni Pop Simple Pant were my gateway into truly comfortable dressing that doesn’t read as overly casual. They move easily, sit perfectly at the waist, and somehow work just as well with a tank as they do with a sweater. They’re the pants I pack without thinking. The Clyque Kira pant filled a similar role- fluid, flattering, unfussy (all alliteration aside). They don’t demand styling, which is exactly why I love them. They also provide a little more structure to an outfit as opposed to the Donni pair. I put them on and move on with my day. They both feel very breezy due to their poplin nature and transition well between spring, summer, and fall.

The La Ligne satin Colby pants deserve their own category. They’re effortless in the way only bias-cut satin can be. Soft, draped, quietly elegant. They are my cheat code to feel like I am wearing pajamas to the office! They feel indulgent but never precious, which makes them infinitely wearable. I purchased these when I was in Charleston with all of my good friends on our yearly reunion. I tried them on in store and they convinced me to take them home…I haven’t regretted it for a second.

The Bags That Actually Got Worn.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, The Row Banana bag (small)remains unmatched. Note that it is most of the photos included in this Substack so no need to include yet another photo. It’s sculptural without being impractical, minimal without being boring. It sits perfectly against the body and somehow works with everything. It’s functionality is the biggest appeal. I reach for it constantly, which is the highest compliment I can give.

Following, The Row 90s bag is pure simplicity. No excess, no distraction. Just a perfectly proportioned leather shoulder bag that feels timeless in the most literal sense. She is my designated night out bag and goes with absolutely everything. I can comfortably fit all of my essential in this bag with little fuss.

The Attersee Brea bag, my most recent purchase, is my designated “sophisticated-but -fun” bag. If I am not in the mood or my outfit is too bland for the 90s bag- the Brea bag is the perfect solution. I saw wear it with the handle undone transforming it into a clutch which has been my go-to style of wear recently.

Knits that I have become one with.

Babaa sweaters changed how I think about knitwear. Not only because it arrived covered in hay and smelling like a farm, but because they truly are the gold standard for quality sustainable wool knitwear. The oversized fit and dramatic neck makes this sweater feel like a big hug.

The Lauren Manoogian Coto cardigan is another piece that I can wear to work feeling like I am in pajamas. Arguably the most versatile piece, I do not have to sacrifice style for comfort.

Together, these two made me realize I’d rather own fewer knits that I love deeply than drawers full of ones I tolerate.

Boots That Earned Their Keep.

Steve Madden Jones boots, perfect dupe for The Row Zipper boot (check out my article on dupes), have been in my life for years now and they remain undefeated. They’re the definition of dependable, comfortable, versatile, and completely unbothered by daily wear. I never hesitate to put them on.

Vagabond Giselle boots brought something slightly sharper to my rotation a few years ago as well. Still practical, but with a bit more edge. They work just as well with tailored pants as they do with denim, which makes them endlessly useful. They somehow always make their way into my night-out outfits because I can walk the entire city with these pain-free.

Bonus: A Scent That Feels Like Me

Salt & Stone Hinoki Basil body mist became part of my daily routine in a way I didn’t expect. It’s subtle, grounding, and clean while never being overpowering. The kind of scent that feels personal rather than performative. I found it to be similar to the cocktails I enjoy: herbaceous with a breath of floral (I have recently been enjoying a home made lavender infused gin with st. Germain and lemon, topped with soda water. Shake with an egg white if you‘re feeling fancy. Yummy!). It lingers just enough to be noticed by you, which is exactly the point. I plan on expanding my collection of this scent to include the body lotion and body wash for the full experience. Praying to Salt & Stone that they turn it into a candle as well.

This year, getting dressed stopped feeling like a decision and more so something I look forward. My wardrobe is now what I refer to as “elevated with ease”: pieces of quality and comfort. And that, more than anything, feels like good taste.

But here is the part I keep coming back to. I think I may have officially outgrown the era where Santa magically handles the heavy lifting. Tragic, I know. I blinked and went from drafting handwritten notes to the North Pole to realizing that I am Santa now. It feels both empowering and slightly dangerous for someone who enjoys a treat yourself moment a little too much.

Still, there is something almost comforting about it. I get to choose pieces with real intention, things I will actually wear or use or cherish. A few items have been lingering in my mental cart for weeks, the kind that feel festive without screaming holiday and practical without edging into boring.

Here are said items currently calling my name, for anyone else who has accepted that they are Santa now. (Nick, if you are reading this, the Attersee bag is at the top of my list and it just came back in stock!)

As uncouth as promoting a dupe may seem in the world of The Row, Khaite, and their minimalist disciples, the truth is that most people cannot afford these pieces, and that doesn’t make them any less entitled to participate in the aesthetic. Fashion, after all, shouldn’t be constrained by income or segregated by exclusivity.

This quest actually began when I was in college (with close to zero money) and became utterly obsessed with The Row’s Zipped Boot after seeing countless photos of Zoë Kravitz rocking them. During my daily ritual of scouring The RealReal for a discounted pair, I stumbled upon a familiar name: Steve Madden. Known for his unapologetic takes on designer silhouettes, he had just released the Jones Boot, a near twin.

I bought them, somewhat skeptically at first, and have since worn them at least three times a week for the past three and a half years. They’ve held up remarkably well. No, they aren’t crafted from the same supple Italian leather or finished with The Row’s meticulous detailing, but they’ve served me well, and I wear them comfortably knowing I didn’t spend $1,500 on something I’d inevitably scuff up on city sidewalks.

Like many, I have a ritual: find a piece I love, then search endlessly for it at the best possible price. Through that process, I’ve uncovered a surprising number of lookalikes and affordable alternatives that capture the same refined spirit as their luxury counterparts. Below, I’ll share some of my favorites, the best dupes I’ve found through years of digging, testing, and wearing:
