And unlike my Uncle’s LIE, which is subject to your definition of “happiness,” multitasking is scientifically impossible. Because the human brain cannot truly multitask. It can only focus on one complete task at a time. And when you try to do two things at once, the brain rapidly switches back and forth between them. This creates the false impression of doing MULTIPLE things at the same time. Google btw 👀.

So imagine how dumbfounded I was on Sunday when I went for a brand event and this beautiful lady came up to me and said, “Synache, how do you balance law school and content? It’s like you’ve hacked this multitasking thing.” The way I laughed ehh, Not in approval of what she said, but because the moment she mentioned law school, I remembered that I soaked all my white shirts and I have nothing to wear to class tomorrow. So that word BALANCE at that time sounded really funny to me.

It’s been six months since I made the decision, earlier in March, to not take the usual one-year “Law School influencer break,” and to do both school and social media concurrently, because I have to chop👀🧎🏾‍♂️. And it’s like every day the universe keeps testing my decision making skills. Having to choose between class and attending a Hennessy party (I chose class btw, in case my lecturer is reading this 👀). Or having to spend the weekend drafting deed or drafting scripts (I also chose drafting deed sir👀).

The point is: trying to “balance” being a student with anything else feels like trying to mix water and oil. Or trying to multitask two distinct things that requires your 100% attention. And I would be lying if I told you I figured out the secret sauce to multitasking. And by saying nothing on this topic like most creators, I fear I’ll be promoting the false narrative of "Doing it all". So I’ll say this instead:

Being a student isn’t a personality trait. You have a life to live. And while it is impossible to completely balance all aspects of your life, it is possible to compartmentalize and have enough respect for yourself to stick to your schedules.  Or else you’ll be washing white shirt by 2am. (Speaking from personal experience 👀)

Don’t get me wrong You can do both, but you can't do both at the same time, Some days you'll have to forfeit one for the other, and on these days be kind to yourself you're not doing anything wrong, they are both your life after all, one equally as important as the other, don’t forget this is the only way your brain can "multitask".

I spent most of this week trying to actively recall a lot of things. Mainly the things I’ve read. Instead, I kept remembering other random things. Like how I said I’d stop yinmu-ing people because my friends said it’s annoying *yinmu*. And also how I said I wasn’t going to let studying law stress me, yet here I am: sleep-deprived, ZOMBIFIED, drafting a deed at 3am.

So I did what every rebellious, tired student would do: I took a break from studying and decided to touch grass. That’s how one voice whispered to me at 3am to book a trip to Abuja. That was the devil, btw. Because if I was going to make bad decisions, at least make them cheap. Like watching Polygamist on Netflix. That was a cheap bad decision, because that show stressed me. I saw it all in one sitting, and that man really pissed me off. Maybe because he reminded me of one of my mumu uncle like that. To be honest, a lot of us know a Mr. Gamora or two if we really think about it 👀.

And since I was already on a bad-decisions spree this week, I mumu-ishly called my Lagos carpenter to make a cabinet for my room. Which makes absolutely no sense now that I think about it. Imagine taking a break from law school stress only to engage in literal industrial madness with a Lagos artisan. After seizing his tools and enduring his WhatsApp status posts, we finally arrived at my inspo furniture.

It was a lot. But at least for one week I didn’t have time to actively recall how to attest a Deed of Assignment or how to draft a Charge. For one week I didn’t read or panic when I questioned myself about a topic I already read. My mind was present. My thoughts were with me. I could hang out with my friends and not feel bad that I wasn’t studying. I realized that most times, the fear of not recalling was what made me forget.

My “STRATEGIC BREAK,” although born from the rebellious instincts of a tired student, ended up becoming the highlight of my month. It was chaotic, but also productive. I mean, I got new furniture, went on a 24-hour no-phone therapy, and most importantly, I realized and understood what it means to “look at it with fresh eyes.” To sleep on it and let it incubate. I wasn’t understanding because I was tired, and I couldn’t recall what I didn’t understand. So do you see where the problem lies?

Maybe you don’t really hate your course or your job. Maybe you don’t want to drop out or quit and “chase your dreams.” Maybe you’re just tired. Tired of actively recalling something that didn’t dey 👀. Maybe you need a “Strategic Break.”
