5 Days Ago: Gifford Pinchot, the former employee of Taft who is now his biggest critic, is blaming the current forest fires on those senators who are not in favor of conservation.

He names Sen. Heyburn (ID), Sen. Carter (MT), and Rep. Modell (WY) whose districts are the worst hit.

4 Days Ago: In an effort to stop the raging forest fires in the west, Taft has ordered all forts in the Northwest to fire their cannons every morning to induce more rainfall. 

3 Days Ago: Taft is attending services in Dublin, NH, an 80-mile drive from Beverly. Rev. Seward presided over the largest congregation in recent memory. 

2 Days Ago: After Roosevelt was snubbed as chairman of New York’s convention (Taft’s VP was picked instead) Taft will now go to war with the political bosses in New York.

He believes this is the only way to prevent a catastrophe in the midterms.

Yesterday: Kansas Republican Council, while agreeing to the GOP policies that Taft ran on, are openly against the tariff bill he signed and urge revisions.

They do commend Taft on the railroad and postal savings bank bills.

Today: Taft and his allies now believe that Roosevelt will defend the tariff bill (that everyone hates) by saying that this is the best Congress could have passed.

5 Days Ago: Taft has refused the plea by Norton, his personal secretary, to fire Secretary of Interior Ballinger now that it is apparent he will not step down. Newspapers scooped that Taft wants him to resign.

4 Days Ago: "The entire article is without any basis of truth…" Teddy Roosevelt responded to the recent article that he sent an ultimatum to Taft that Vice President Sherman must step down as NY chairman in order to be in his good graces. 

Also, Taft has started planning his party's campaign strategies this morning. He then watched the Sonder races on the yacht, Sylph.

3 Days Ago: Taft is finishing a letter for the public that outlines the GOP plans this fall. Reports indicate he will make overtures to the poor and will look for more progressive reforms.

2 Days Ago: In an effort to save their capital city from destruction, Nicaraguan President Madriz has given up his power to Gen. Estrada of the rebellion.

This war has cost over 4000 lives and Madriz is retiring to Leor. Estrada has cabled Secretary Knox saying his first act will be to make "reparation for the unfortunate killing of [Americans] Cannon and Groce and for the other atrocities committed by my predecessors."

Yesterday: Taft has agreed to attend the Conservation Congress in St. Paul on September 3 and will return to Beverly, MA for a couple of weeks before ending his vacation.

Today: Teddy Roosevelt, with his endorsement of State Senator Davenport, is essentially fighting against Vice President Sherman.

GOP politicians in New York now believe that Sherman would not win his district if he ran in the House.

6 Days Ago: Rain in Beverly, MA prevented Taft from golfing this morning, although he decided to golf later that day (while it was drizzling). 

5 Days Ago: After golfing again, Taft met with Sen. Aldrich to discuss a postal bank and also a plan to win Tennessee in the midterms. 

4 Days Ago: With Taft's approval, GOP leaders are beginning to make changes to help their party in the midterms.

1. Secretary of Interior Ballinger, whose feud with Gifford Pinchot has only gotten worse, will be forced out.

2. Sen. Aldrich, author of the tariff bill that everyone hates, will no longer serve as an advisor to Taft.

3. Speaker of the House Cannon, who the progressive wing despises, will be forced to step down.

   

3 Days Ago: Taft, his wife, and Capt. Butt went to the First Unitarian Church this morning. The President then spent his afternoon sitting on his porch.

2 Days Ago: Taft decided to take a hands-on approach to the GOP’s midterm strategy. He also went golfing with Ohio congressman Longworth.

Yesterday: In a blow to Taft (and the GOP) both Ballinger and Cannon are refusing to step down. 

Also, in an embarrassment for Roosevelt, the GOP voted against the former President to serve as Chairman of the NY GOP Convention next month. Although Roosevelt did not lobby for the role, he did not refuse it. And to make matters worse for the Roosevelt-Taft friendship, Vice President Sherman was selected as chairman.

Today: Pedro Montt, President of Chile, has died unexpectedly in Germany. Montt was a guest of Tafts' earlier this month.

Also, Vice President Sherman is visiting Taft today. Although he does not wish to talk about his new chairman role. Roosevelt later announced that there should be a "clean-cut progressive platform."

6 Days Ago: Colonel Nelson, editor/owner of the Kansas City Star met with Taft. The Star is friendly to the insurgent (progressive) cause and this meeting comes after Kansas and Iowa GOP conventions have hurt the GOP establishment.

5 Days Ago: Taft, Governor Draper, Senator Lodge, and others are in Provincetown, MA to celebrate the landing of the pilgrims in 1620 with the dedication of a stone shaft. 

Also, in a statement on the status of the GOP, Taft told reporters his party has been loyal to the pledges made in his campaign and they should therefore endorse a Republican Congress.

4 Days Ago: Chilean President Pedro Montt is scheduled to meet with Taft today before his return to Beverly, MA.

Also, Washington’s Governor, Hay, wired Taft asking for troops to help fight forest fires out West. Fires in Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington have so far destroyed 1 million dollars in property.

3 Days Ago: After going to Church this morning, Taft ate with Judge Warrington from Cincinnati before going on a car ride.

2 Days Ago: Taft met with Secretary of State Knox to discuss mediating a border fight between Peru and Ecuador.

Yesterday: The State Department has warned President Madriz of Nicaragua to protect American property in his country. Recently Madriz's soldiers entered the land of rancher Alfred Scott and conscripted his workers and took supplies.

Today: Although diplomatic ties were officially cut between The U.S. and Nicaragua, envoys for Madriz are in the country to resume talks. President Madriz has offered to step down if it will help his country.

6 Days Ago: Taft's cruise along the coast of Maine has ended. The president and his family have returned to Beverly, MA to catch up on work.

5 Days Ago: Supreme Court Justice William Moody will retire and step down later this year. Moody met Taft in Beverly days ago to notify the President.

4 Days Ago: Taft met with Yale President Hadley to convince him to lead the new commission that looks at stock fraud from the railroad companies. Hadley declined.

Also, John Shuebel traveled to Beverly to speak to Taft on religion. When he arrived, a Secret Service agent found a bomb-shaped object and a hammer. After reading the note Shuebel wrote, which was muddled, he was sent to Danvers Asylum.

3 Days Ago: Taft left Beverly for Worcester, MA to visit his Aunt Delia and her famous apple pies. 

2 Days Ago: Taft met with a Minnesota delegation lobbying him to attend the National Conservation Congress next month. Teddy Roosevelt is expected to attend.

Yesterday: In today's paper, rumor is still circulating that Secretary of the Interior Ballinger will resign. Taft has heard from members that he must go to help their party in the midterms.

Ballinger met with Senator Crane in Minnesota, who is a possible replacement.

Today: Iowa Republicans during their convention have voted to disapprove of Taft's Tariff Bill 815-568. They also thanked progressives (known as insurgents) for voting against the bill. During the convention Senator Cummins listed Republican presidents from Lincoln and ended at Roosevelt, refusing to name Taft.

Back on the East Coast, Michael Grigordio, the man Taft's son, Robert, hit with his car in late June has been discharged from the hospital. The President covered the man's bill.

5 Days Ago: After eating with Mrs. Hanna, Taft gave a speech on vacations. He noted that last generation, 2 weeks was an ample vacation but now:

4 Days Ago: After breakfast in Bar Harbor, Taft sailed to Bangor, ME for a luncheon. He also went golfing but sprained his ankle on the 2nd green. He continued to play.

3 Days Ago: Taft's ankle has gotten worse but after wearing a compress he was able to go to services at the Congregational Church in Ellsworth

2 Days Ago: Taft's ankle is feeling better but he had little rest because due to the weather (the ship's foghorn kept the party up all night). 

Yesterday: At Ohio's GOP convention, James R. Garfield, running for governor and a progressive, has given Taft a tepid endorsement.

Today: After 3 ballots the Ohio GOP picked Warren G. Harding to be their nominee for governor, Garfield was a distant 4th. With the progressives defeated, the party ended the day endorsing the controversial tariff bill.

6 Days Ago: Taft has agreed to speak at the annual Conservation Congress in September. He will be a joint speaker …with Theodore Roosevelt.

5 Days Ago: Senator Dick (OH) met with Taft today. He wanted to recommend Dr. Holmes to be the head of the Bureau of Mines.

4 Days Ago: Taft will no longer speak at the annual Conservation Congress. The fear is that former employee Gifford Pinchot and other progressives will make the event awkward for him.

Also, per Taft's order, the State Department will look into the treatment of Mr. Pittman, who is being held prisoner in Nicaragua (for helping their rebellion). News has reached the U.S. that he is being treated poorly.

3 Days Ago: Taft met with the Maine GOP today. They are seeking the aid of Taft since they are a battleground State. Taft is considering visiting this month to make a speech.

2 Days Ago: This afternoon Taft boarded the Mayflower yacht for an extended vacation. With him are his wife, Charlie, and Horace Taft among others.

Yesterday: Taft has arrived in Eastport, ME. Mayor Garnett and a crowd cheered Taft's arrival, the first time a president visited Eastport. 

Today: President Madriz of Nicaragua has ordered that all prisoners be shot. This includes William Pittman and any other American who helps the rebellion.

Also, Taft golfed today at the Kebo Valley Club shooting a 99 over the 18 holes.

6 Days Ago: After his 10 day vacation, Taft is planning a 10 day cruise along the New England Coast aboard the Mayflower.

5 Days Ago: Taft met with Supreme Court Justice Moody who is contemplating retirement due to illness.

Taft is hoping Moody can improve so he does not have to pick another replacement. 

Also, at the Hamilton Club in Chicago, Secretary Ballinger (whose been accused of poor leadership, and is a symbol for Taft’s divergence from Teddy Roosevelt) noted, "President Taft is like President Lincoln and is bringing a great good to this country."

4 Days Ago: The White House has released letters between Mexican President Diaz and Taft discussing the violence in Nicaragua.

Diaz offered to mediate but also criticized the U.S. actions in the region. Taft replied warmly but noted that any misconduct was due to "erroneous information with respect to the actual facts..."

3 Days Ago: Taft went to services at the Unitarian Church in Beverly, MA.

Members now need a ticket to attend so that there are open seats.

2 Days Ago: William Loeb, a friend of Roosevelt, visited Taft to discuss his potential candidacy for New York Governor.

This visit also was meant to show no conflict between Roosevelt and Taft.

Harry Dunlap, writer for the New York World quoted Taft saying, "Will has the most level head of almost any man I know."

Yesterday: Taft spent time golfing and had lunch with Senator Crane.

Today: Dunlap, writer for the New York World, was notified that he will be excluded from press events in Beverly, MA. This is because he quoted Taft two days ago, which is against the rules.

The White House also claims the quote was inaccurate. However, the other reporters who heard Taft have defended Dunlap's accuracy.

"Mr. President!" Teddy said.

"Theodore!" Taft replied.

"I had a most pleasant time with the President" Roosevelt said after the long meeting before leaving.

"They had a bully time" said Secretary Norton.

5 Days Ago: Roosevelt told reporters that he is meeting with insurgent members of congress tomorrow, although he refused to say which. 

Insurgents (AKA Progressives) have been in a cold war with establishment Republicans who have watered down (or rejected) their policies.

4 Days Ago: Roosevelt met with 3 lawmakers from Kansas for his secret meeting. He also announced that he would not accept a nomination to be Governor of New York.

Taft played golf with his brother Henry this morning. 

3 Days Ago: Taft is attending Grace Episcopal Church in Salem, MA to celebrate Rev. Frank's 40th anniversary in his position.

2 Days Ago: The 4th of July! Unfortunately Chief Justice Fuller died this morning.

In Somerville, MA, Taft was watching the Independence Day Parade when he was told of Fuller's death. "I am greatly shocked and grieved…"

This will be the third Supreme Court nomination Taft will make.

Yesterday: Secretary of the Interior Ballinger (the subject of a congressional investigation) met with Taft in Beverly, MA to discuss irrigation in the West.

Today: From now until July 16th Taft will not discuss business and will instead enjoy his time in Beverly, although he will check his mail. 

Rumor in GOP circles is that New York Governor Charles Hughes will be selected as the new Chief Justice, even though Hughes is not on the bench yet.

5 Days Ago: Charles Norton, Secretary to the President is sleeping at the White House with his family away. Taft enjoys the company since his family is now in Beverly.

4 Days Ago: Provisional President Madriz of Nicaragua is in a dispute with the U.S. on their current revolution. Madiz argues that the U.S. is not acting neutral. The U.S. says he is lying to remove the U.S. Steamer Venus out of their harbor.

Also, Taft has signed several bills into law, including the Postal Savings Bill and Statehood Bill for Arizona and New Mexico. This law outlines the steps the territories must follow in creating their state constitutions (i.e. a convention must be held within 60 days of the election of delegates).

Finally, reporters spoke with Teddy Roosevelt today.

Reporters: "How about your reported meeting with President Taft this week? Are you going to join him at Beverly…?"

Roosevelt: "I don't know"

3 Days Ago: It is reported that Roosevelt will meet Taft in Beverly, MA later this month to discuss the current state of affairs.

2 Days Ago: Robert Taft, son of the president, has struck a man while driving.

The victim Michael Thisthwolla was in the road when Robert hit him while going 15 mph. Thisthwolla has a fractured skull and is in serious condition.

Yesterday: After withdrawing Sidney Bieber nomination as a collector in the port of Georgetown (and then later withdrawing his withdrawal), Taft changed his mind again.

That means Taft is again no longer selecting Bieber. Instead it is rumored that he will select a man of color.

Today: Taft has arrived at Beverly. His son Charlie was in the car that picked him up.

President Taft: "Hows all the folks at home Charlie?" 

Taft then visited the man hit by Robert's car (now reported Michael Di Grigordia) in the hospital. He invited Dr. Mixter, the man's doctor, to dinner.

Taft gave 2 commencement speeches today. First at Villanova College where he also received an honorary degree and then at Lincoln University, an all black college.

3 Days Ago: Taft and Secretary Knox met to discuss a potential bid by Knox to be Pennsylvania's next governor.

The party is undecided who they would like to endorse, Knox or Rep. Tener.

2 Days Ago: Secretary Knox has withdrawn his name to be considered for Pennsylvania Governor. Congressman Tener, a former pitcher, is expected to be the nominee.

Brief summary of Rep. John Tener: He played for the Chicago White Stockings, explained baseball to King Edward VII, and organized the 1st Congressional Baseball game in 1909 (a tradition still held today).

Yesterday: Taft will no longer travel to Yale to see his son Robert graduate. Specifically he wants to make sure his postal saving bill becomes law.

Today: Taft's Postal Savings Bill has passed the Senate (44-25) and expected to be law in the next few days.

6 Days Ago: Senate leaders told Taft that stock and bond regulations in the railroad reform bill in the House bill (and insisted by Taft) will not pass in the Senate and will be scraped. 

5 Days Ago: The Senate added an amendment to a bill that appropriates money to Taft for his travel expenses. This after his current year total exceeded what Congress gave him. Democrats in the House plan to fight the provision.

4 Days Ago: Taft is pushing back against the Senate and demanding that the government issues stocks/bonds for railroad companies or a commission be created to regulate them. This has derailed the bill now in conference.

3 Days Ago: The White House is looking into a woman in the Midwest who is pretending to be the First Lady.

The real Mrs. Taft went to St. John Church while the President went to All Souls.

2 Days Ago: Taft has spoken to Secretary Meyer and the South Carolina, a new battleship, will welcome Teddy Roosevelt when he arrives in a few days.

Yesterday: The conference writing the final railroad reform bill has come together in agreement. Per Taft's demand there will be a commission to look at stocks and bonds.

Today: Taft is on his way to Marietta, Ohio to give another commencement speech. He stopped in Clarksburg, West Virginia to a large crowd where he gave "an informal talk".

3 Days Ago: After Attorney General Wickersham froze railroad rates in the West, the railroad bosses are insisting a meeting with Taft.

Taft is on his way from the Midwest to see them tomorrow.

2 Days Ago: After a 4 hour meeting with the western railroad heads, Taft convinced the executives to file a claim with the interstate commerce commission to argue that a rate increase is reasonable.

Yesterday: Taft sent a letter on Congress on his meeting with the railroad companies. He said that their effort to increase rates caused him to "bring a suit and secure from the United States Court in Missouri an injunction…" which led to the meeting.

Today: After meeting with senators to discuss the railroad bill (to regulate the industry) Taft went golfing with champion Walter Travis. Travis gave the president some golfing advice hoping he will comment on his upcoming book.

6 Days Ago: The Gillett bill (retirement plan for government workers) has more interest now that Taft supports the idea. Members are hesitant to back a pension deal so this bill provides an annuity for all employees (deducted from their earnings).

5 Days Ago: Rep. Tawney (R-MN) recently criticized the money Congress pays for Taft's travels. He says lawmakers won’t say no to appropriating money because they benefit from traveling with Taft in their district.

Taft, today, called this accusation false and "painful".

4 Days Ago: With debates on paying for Taft’s previous trips around the U.S., Augusta, GA businesses have agreed to put in $5,000 to meet the deficit from the President’s travels.

"Augusta, the winter home of President Taft, stands indignant and mortified at the action of certain Democratic members of Congress in defeating, by technical objection, the proposition to make retroactive, so as to cover all the expenses of his last Southern trip..."

3 Days Ago: Taft did not attend church today and instead had to clear his desk of correspondences.

2 Days Ago: Taft is in New York to watch a Civil War veterans parade. He first met with his brother, Henry, before going to the review stand with Maj Gens. Stahl and Sickles.

Yesterday: At the White House, Taft met 2 Oklahomans (aged 6 and 9) who are traveling by horseback with their father to New York to meet Theodore Roosevelt when he arrives from his trip abroad. 

Today: Charles Norton has been announced as the next Secretary to the President. He has replaced Fred Carpenter who is now the ambassador to Morocco.

6 Days Ago: After bombshell testimony that Taft did not actually write the letter exonerating Secretary of the Interior Ballinger, (it was Ballinger’s employee, Oscar Lawler), Mr. Lawler is now on the stand.

He explained that he wrote the letter with "the bias one honest man has against a dishonest man's charges…"

5 Days Ago: The Naval Observatory has been told to notify the White House if the weather has cleared so Taft and his wife can watch Halley's comet.

4 Days Ago: After being appropriated $25,000 to conduct the Ballinger-Pinchot inquiry, Senator Nelson has to date spent $15,000, most on stenographers and travel expenses for witnesses. 

3 Days Ago: President Taft and his brother Charles went to All Soul's Church. They former then went on a ride around the city.

2 Days Ago: The U.S. is in court against Heike, secretary of the American Sugar Refining Company. He is on trial for defrauding the government by underweighing imports.

The first witness is Oliver Spitzer, superintendent of the Williamsburg docks. He was recently convicted. But for his testimony Taft has just pardoned him.

Back in D.C.: Taft traveled to the Naval Observatory to watch Halley's Comet! Professor Asaph Hall Jr. (whose father discovered Mars' 2 moons) was the tour guide and Taft "was full of questions as a boy at the circus..."

Yesterday: Taft is now considering the creation of a Department of Public Works. They would be in charge of the Panama Canal, irrigation, conservation/forestry etc. If accepted, the Department of the Interior would be abolished.

Today: Secretary MacVeagh has brought up the idea of a retirement plan for government clerks. Taft gives his support to such a plan but is vague on the details.

6 Days Ago: With the Panama Canal nearly complete, the Chamber of Commerce President, Gude, is planning to have San Fransisco and D.C. hold a joint World's Fair. They would sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific to open the event.

This idea was given by Taft at a dinner with Gude.

5 Days Ago: A few days ago, Senator Aldrich told Taft that the Senate would reject an progressive measure on railroad rates. Today, the Democrats teamed up with the progressives and a compromise bill surprisingly passed.

4 Days Ago: Frederick Kerby, stenographer for Secretary Ballinger, came forward with big news.

Taft did not write the letter that cleared Ballinger of wrongdoing. Instead he says it was done by Oscar Lawler, an employee of Ballinger, and then given to Taft to sign.

3 Days Ago: After yesterday’s bombshell report, Taft wrote to the Ballinger committee blaming this entire ordeal on "jealousy between the bureaus of the Interior Department and the forestry bureau…"

On the specific accusation, Taft confirms he didn’t write the statement exonerating Ballinger, but does note he was not tricked. He was simply too busy from traveling so he asked Mr. Lawler "to prepare an opinion, as if he were President."

Also in D.C.: Taft dedicated Ingram Memorial Church today. He had a schedule conflict so he couldn’t stay long.

Taft: “I am here this morning on my way to my own church to give you greetings."

2 Days Ago: After his remarkable testimony, Ballinger has fired Kirby for acting "treacherously".

Kirby responded saying that his boss (Ballinger) is not the best judgment of integrity and will wait for the American people to judge him properly.

Yesterday: Kirby is on the stand in front of the committee. He was questioned by Ballinger's lawyer.

Lawyer: "You were a confidential clerk to Mr. Ballinger, were you not?"

Kirby: "I felt myself a confidential clerk to the government". 

Kirby then told the panel that he met with Roosevelt's Secretary of the Interior Garfield at Pinchot's house where he was advised to come forward.

While this was going on, Taft met with private school girls at the White House.

Today: Taft has told his allies to push back on rumors that he disparaged the progressive wing in his party. The source of the rumors is reportedly Senator Borah.

Ballinger claimed a conspiracy against him within his agency. He added that Taft asked he be silent against attacks.

Ballinger's lawyer accused Brandies of "looking for a scrap". But Brandies was able to show that Taft's exoneration of his secretary contained examples now proven false.

Also, King Edward VII, son of the late Queen Victoria, has died.

3 Days Ago: Taft is now scheduled to attend the unveiling of Revolutionary War Officer, and Polish national, Casimir Pulaski's statue on 13th St. and Pennsylvania Ave in a few days.

2 Days Ago: Attorney General Wickersham has told Congress that he does not work for them. This is in response to the Senate calling on the A.G. to look into the cotton industry for possible fraud.

Yesterday: Mr. Brandies continues his questioning of Ballinger. This time he was voted down twice by the committee.

First was when he asked if Ballinger heard that a Cunningham Coal employee Charles Sweeney helped elect Senator Piles. The panel objected to accusing a Senator.

Later Brandies asked Ballinger if his "clear listing" of Cunningham claims means that a full examination was made. After Ballinger didn’t give a direct answer Brandies reread the question 2 more times before the panel forced him to proceed.

Today: Taft has asked Theodore Roosevelt to act as the official U.S. representative and attend King Edward's funeral later this month. Roosevelt agreed.

Back in D.C.: Taft spoke to a crowd of thousands, many Polish-Americans, to unveil Brig. Gen. Pulaski's statue.

He then traveled to Lafayette square to unveil the statue for Brig. Gen. Kasciusko.

6 Days Ago: Prince Tsai Tao, age 25, brother of the prince regent in China, has arrived in D.C. during his world tour to reform China’s military.

Tao will dine with Taft before leaving for West Point.

5 Days Ago: Taft met with his cabinet and cleared his work before leave for Buffalo, NY tonight to begin a week long trip to the Midwest. 

4 Days Ago: Taft has arrived in Buffalo. He worked on speeches in the room where Roosevelt took the oath of office after McKinley's death.

He is ready to defend his tariff bill (that most people hate) and reiterated his views on an income tax, mainly that he is for the government having the power levy a tax if necessary.

Also, Taft and Secretary of State Knox spoke to the Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturer's Club.

3 Days Ago: Taft is now in Pittsburgh. He ate breakfast at the Laughlin home (his wife’s family) and then went to the First Unitarian Church before taking a drive to Schenley Park.

2 Days Ago: Taft and Secretary Knox are at the American Club banquet. Taft while praising Knox mocked those who called his strategy "dollar diplomacy".

Taft then visited the Pennsylvania State College for Women and spoke about the value of their lives even if he doesn’t advocate for a right to vote.

Taft ended the day watching the Pirates beat his brother's Chicago Cubs 5-2. He sat with the Belgium Ambassador and 3 congressmen. 

Back in D.C.: Charles Hughes has been confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. Hughes will not take the bench until early October so that he does not get 2 salaries (Governor and Justice).

Yesterday: Taft is in his home city of Cincinnati. He was welcomed by hundreds of school children from Highland public school and St. Rose parochial school.

Taft then gave a speech at the Mercantile Library. Later speaking the millionaire banker Schmidlapp before going to the May music festival.

Today: Taft has arrived in St. Louis. He was greeted by Mayor Kriesman and then went to the Commercial Club to eat. He later rode through the the city before speaking to the Business League at the Southern Hotel. 

Taft ended the day with some baseball. First seeing the Reds-Cardinals game before leaving early to watch St. Louis' other baseball team, the Browns, play the Cleveland Naps.

5 Days Ago: Taft has threatened to team up with progressives in his party to pass a postal bank bill. This comes after regular GOP members are not excited about the law. The bill is currently stuck in committee.

4 Days Ago: After pushing leaders to pass more bills, Taft went golfing in Chevy Chase, MD today. Rain was expected but Taft pressed on and then continued playing when it started to downpour.

3 Days Ago: Taft signed a proclamation that rearranges the land in the national forests. This reclassification was planned by Gifford Pinchot before he was fired, by Taft.

2 Days Ago: Taft selected Governor Hughes of New York to succeed the late Justice Brewer on the Supreme Court.

Yesterday: The Pan American Union Building was dedicated today. Speakers were Andrew Carnegie and President Taft, among others.

Carnegie: "The crime of war is inherent⁠—it gives victory not to the nation that is right, but to that which is strong."

Today: It is reported that Washington insiders believe Roosevelt will replace Senator Depew in New York if the GOP is in control of the State legislature after the Midterms.

6 Days Ago: The cow Mrs. Taft bought last year (named Moo-ley) to have fresh milk in the White House has died. This after it got out and overate a bag of oats.

Taft later gave a speech before the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Taft actually spoke against suffrage.

Taft: If everyone can vote, power "may be exercised by that part of the class least desirable as political constituents…"

He was met with loud boos. Prominent suffragettes are hoping the group sends an apology to Taft.

A new tradition! Taft threw out the first pitch at the Nationals-Athletics game. He attended the game with his wife and Vice President Sherman, among others. The crowd of 12,000 watched Taft throw the ball to Walter Johnson who then pitched a 1 hit shut out to beat the A's 3-0.

5 Days Ago: In the morning session of the National American Woman Suffrage Association the group unanimously passed a resolution thanking Taft for his "seriousness, honesty, and friendliness".

4 Days Ago: Taft sent a letter to the suffragists to apologize for his April 14th speech. He is not sorry for speaking against a woman's right to vote, but instead he is sorry that the boos he heard will embarrass the group's leaders.

Also, in a speech to the Banker's Association, Taft is hoping Congress will try to reclaim the Northeastern portion of Virginia that was given to them decades earlier. If passed then Taft would use the 10 mile area for a new park system.

3 Days Ago: Mrs. Taft and her guest Mrs. Eckstein went to St. John's Episcopal Church for services before returning to the White House.

2 Days Ago: Taft spoke at the 19th annual Daughters of the American Revolution convention.

Mrs. Scott: "It has been rumored that President Taft is not in favor of woman's suffrage."

The crowd then broke into applause. Mrs. Scott added that if this is true he is actually quite selfless because if he was for women's suffrage then every woman would reelect him.

Yesterday: Taft met with Speaker Cannon on current legislation. Taft then met with the members of the Committee on Territories to push for Arizona and New Mexico statehood.

Also, Senator Aldrich, the namesake of the recent tariff bill (that a ton of people hate) is retiring.

Today: Red flag for GOP in the midterms! Taft met with George Aldridge who lost to the Democrat James Havens yesterday to replace the late Rep. Perkins for New York. Democratic votes only slightly increased from the 1908 election, but Republican turnout was 14,000 less!
