前回のレター（上リンク参照）でお伝えいたしました、アートイベント「Arts on Terry」における「Peace Connections」のオープンコールにつきまして、多くの方から関心をお寄せいただき心より感謝申し上げます。

諸々の準備に追われ、発表が直前になってしまいましたことをお詫び申し上げます。今年は余裕を持って準備を進めていたつもりでしたが、締め切りまで残り1ヶ月と迫った段階でのご案内となってしまい、大変申し訳ありません。

In this update, I would like to share information regarding “a Piece of Peace”—the core of this project—as well as the application procedure for Japanese artists participating in the digital exhibition.

今回は、本プロジェクトの核となる「a Piece of Peace」、ならびに日本人作家を対象としたデジタル展示への参加方法に関する申し込み手続きのお知らせです。

1. About a Piece of Peace - 平和のひとひら展について

For “Peace Connections,” we are broadly inviting “Peace Cards”—capturing wishes for peace, fragments of thought, and individual expressions—from both Japan and abroad. The cards we receive will not only be displayed physically at the venue, but will also be documented and presented as part of the project’s digital archive. Please see the link below for details.

Arts on Terry (AOT) is a vibrant, community-centered art festival held annually in Patchogue, Long Island. Our booth, “Peace Connections,” primarily spotlights art and concepts rooted in or connected to Japan. This year, the booth will be structured around two main initiatives: a global “a Piece of Peace” postcard exhibition, and a digital showcase featuring contemporary artists from Japan.

■ 1. “a Piece of Peace” Postcard Exhibition (Global Call) / ポストカード募集（全世界共通）

This is a long-running art project where participants share and exchange their personal wishes for peace through a single postcard. This call is open to everyone worldwide.

平和への願いを1枚の絵はがきに託すアートプロジェクトです。こちらは日本国内に限らず、全世界から広く募集いたします。

• Theme / テーマ: “Cards wishing for peace” / 「平和を願うカード」

• Eligibility / 対象: Open to anyone (No professional background required) / どなたでも参加可能です（プロ・アマ、年齢不問）

• Number of Submissions / 出展点数: No entry limits per person / 送付点数に制限はありません

• Capacity / 定員: Unlimited / 制限なし

• Submission Method: Must be mailed as a standard postcard. (Since they are handled as general mail and displayed together, please avoid materials or mediums that could transfer, smudge, or cause issues for others.)

• 応募方法: 一般の郵便ポストカードとして郵送してください。通常の郵便物として扱われ、他の作品と一緒に展示されるため、色移りや破損などで他の人に迷惑をかけない画材・仕様での制作をお願いいたします。

• Exhibition Format: The physical postcards will be displayed hanging from lines, clipped together like photographs. While there is no limit to how many you can send, display space on the lines is limited. Therefore, if multiple cards arrive from the same person, one will be featured on the hanging line, while the others will be displayed flat on the table.

• 展示方法: 届いたフィジカルなカードは、写真のように紐にクリップで挟んで吊るす形で会場に展示します。送付数に限りはありませんが、展示スペース（紐の長さ）には限りがあるため、同一人物から複数のハガキが届いた場合は、1枚を紐に吊るし、その他のものはテーブルに平置きして展示させていただきます。小さなお子さんからご年配の方まで幅広い層が来場されるため、公序良俗に反しない自由な表現でお寄せください。

• Future Projects: Looking ahead, these postcards will also serve as visual material for an upcoming projection mapping video installation centered on the theme of peace. For any cards selected, I will reach out directly to the artist via the contact information provided on the card.

• 今後の展開: 今後予定されている、ピースカードをテーマとしたプロジェクションマッピング映像作品のビジュアル素材として使用させていただきます。使用させていただく作品の作家さんへは、カードに記載された連絡先へ直接ご連絡を差し上げますので、記載漏れのないようお願いいたします。

【Shipping Schedule & Deadline / 配送スケジュールと締め切り】

International shipping to the US (my location) typically takes approximately two weeks. If you are mailing your card from Japan or overseas, please aim to dispatch it by around 【August 27】. It must arrive in my university mailbox by Thursday, September 10, 2026. (The exact mailing address will be provided in July’s newsletter).

※For English readers: This specific digital showcase is tightly tailored for contemporary artists based in Japan to help them introduce their work to the Long Island community. Detailed guidelines for this digital section are provided in Japanese below.

ご自身の作品をニューヨーク・ロングアイランドの人々に見てもらいたい、という日本の作家様を対象としたデジタル出展枠の概要です。7月の本募集を前に、ぜひ今から準備を進めていただけますと幸いです。

• 対象: 過去2年以上、精力的に制作活動をされており、今後も継続していく意欲のある日本人作家の方。

• 募集テーマ: 「Peace / 平和」

• 出展点数: お一人につき1点のみ

• 対象技法: デジタルフォーマットでの提出であれば、AIアート、写真、手書きの作品をスマホで撮影したものなど、技法は問いません。詳細なガイドラインは7月に掲載しますので、まずは画像データのご準備をお願いいたします。

• 展示方法: 会場に設置するiPad 4台と、32インチモニター1台を使用し、作品をループ再生させて展示します。

• 応募方法: 矩形（長方形）の短い方の辺が2400ピクセル以上のデジタルファイルをご用意いただき、7月にお知らせするオンラインフォームから提出していただきます。

• 定員: 展示スペース（デジタル枠）には限りがあるため、埋まり次第締め切りとさせていただきます。

【参加費と「Peace Connections Collection」としての販売について】

本公募の参加費は無料です。今回は実験的な試みとして、参加費の代わりに、ご提出いただいたデジタルファイルをもとに以下の形で複製・販売する許可をいただきます。売上はすべて本イベントまた今後の運営資金に充てられます。

• レターサイズプリント（8.5 x 11 インチ、約21.6cm × 27.9cm）:
  インクジェットプリンターで複製。限定3枚のみプリントし、1枚10ドルで現地販売。

■ What is an ACEO? / ACEOについて

For those unfamiliar with the format, ACEO stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. It is a contemporary art movement that gained popularity around 2004 in the US. The dimensions are rigidly fixed at 2.5 inches × 3.5 inches (approx. 6.35 cm × 8.89 cm), which is the exact size of a standard trading card. Because they take up no wall space and can easily be collected in albums or tiny frames, they have captured the hearts of collectors worldwide. It is a unique format that offers “big joy in a small piece of art.”

今回のデジタル公募枠での複製販売にも使用する「ACEO（エイ・シー・イー・オー）」について簡単にご紹介します。 ACEOとは Art Cards, Editions and Originals の略称で、2004年頃にアメリカから広がった現代のアートムーブメントです。サイズは 2.5インチ × 3.5インチ（約6.35cm × 8.89cm） と厳密に固定されており、これは野球やポケモンのトレーディングカードと全く同じサイズです。壁のスペースを取らずにアルバムや小さなフレームで気軽にコレクションできることから、欧米を中心に多くのコレクターに愛されています。「小さなアートで大きな楽しみ」を提供するユニークなフォーマットです。

今日は、私の活動拠点であるニューヨーク・ロングアイランドから、ちょっと嬉しいお知らせをさせてください。この度、ヘクシャー美術館（Heckscher Museum of Art）で開催される「ロングアイランド・ビエンナーレ 2026」に作品が出展されることになりました。それに伴い、5月15日の金曜日には、美術館で行われたオープニングへと足を運んできました。

The term "Biennial" is often heard in the art world to describe an exhibition held every two years. Founded in 2010, this specific biennial is now in its ninth edition, serving as a contemporary juried exhibition for artists based in this region. Following a selection process, it brings together a diverse range of expressions currently being created right here, making it a well-regarded event within the local community.

「ビエンナーレ」という言葉は、2年に一度開かれる美術展として耳にされる機会も多いかと思います。2010年に始まったこのロングアイランド・ビエンナーレは、今回で9回目を数え、この地域に拠点を置くアーティストを対象とした公募展です。選考を経て、今この場所で生まれている多様な表現が一堂に会する、地元でも親しまれているイベントです。

In fact, this is not the first time my work has been selected for this biennial. My previous participation was twelve years ago, in 2014.

実は、私がこの展覧会に選出されるのは、今回が初めてではありません。前回の参加は、今から12年前の2014年のことでした。

At that time, I exhibited a photographic work titled ambiguous moment: Hisanohama, Fukushima, August 2012. Traveling to the area the year after the Great East Japan Earthquake, I captured the everyday reality of the affected region and the quiet presence of the debris through my lens as a form of “memory.” I hope to share more about the background and thoughts behind that project on another occasion.

当時展示したのは、『ambiguous moment: Hisanohama, Fukushima, August 2012』という作品です。東日本大震災の翌年に現地へ足を運び、そこで目にした被災地の日常や、静かに佇む瓦礫を「記憶」としてレンズに収めたものでした。その時の背景や想いについては、また別の機会にゆっくりとお話しできればと思います。

"Just Powers" — The Intersection of Two Historical Contexts / 二つの歴史的文脈が交差する「Just Powers」

The 2026 biennial is centered around the theme “Just Powers.”
As this year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence (1776), the exhibition focuses on two historical contexts and works fundamental to this country.

2026年のビエンナーレは「Just Powers」というテーマを掲げています。
今年はアメリカ独立宣言（1776年）から250周年を迎える年でもあります。今回の展覧会は、この国の根幹に関わる二つの歴史的な背景や作品に焦点を当てています。

The first is the phrase “just powers” from the Declaration of Independence. It re-examines the ideals of freedom and equality, reflecting on the ongoing complexities of contemporary society where those promises remain unfulfilled, while also acknowledging the history of Indigenous peoples and the evolution of racial diversity.

一つは、独立宣言の一節にある「just powers（正当な権力）」という言葉です。自由や平等という理想を問い直し、その約束が未だ不完全であるという現代社会のあり方や、先住民族の歴史、人種の多様性といった変化について、改めて目を向けています。

The second focus is George Grosz’s painting Eclipse of the Sun, a notable piece in the Heckscher Museum’s permanent collection. Marking its centenary, the artwork reflects the political corruption and social unrest of its time.

そしてもう一つが、ヘクシャー美術館の収蔵品であるジョージ・グロス（George Grosz）の絵画『日蝕（Eclipse of the Sun）』です。制作から100年を迎えるこの作品は、当時の権力の腐敗や社会の歪みを映し出したものです。

This exhibition brings together works by contemporary artists responding to these themes, selected through a juried process to explore the dynamics of power.

今回の展示では、これらのテーマに対して現代のアーティストがどのように向き合うのか、それぞれの視点から表現された作品群が、審査を経て選ばれています。

Harmonizing with the "Lack of Control" Entrusted to Monotype / モノタイプに託した「不自由さ」との調和

In response to this theme, I am exhibiting Understanding & Harmonizing (2024), grateful for the opportunity to present my current practice at this museum once again.

私は、このテーマに呼応する一作として、『Understanding & Harmonizing』（2024年）を出品し、再びこの美術館で今の自分の表現を提示する機会をいただきました。

As I have occasionally mentioned in this “purple sketches,” this artwork is a monotype print. Utilizing Arabic gum to transfer water-soluble pigments from an acrylic plate to paper, I sought to capture a delicate atmospheric balance. Once pressed onto the paper, the colors drift beyond my control, settling as if dissolving into a singular space.

本作は、この「purple sketches」でも触れてきた「モノタイプ版画」です。アラビアゴムを用いて水溶性顔料をアクリル板から紙へと転写するプロセスを通じて、大気の繊細な均衡を捉えようと試みました。プレス機によって紙へと移された色彩は、私のコントロールを超えて漂い、ひとつの空間に溶け合うように定着していきます。

The “harmony” expressed here is not a static conclusion. Rather, it represents the ongoing process itself—where differing elements continuously interact in a fluid state, seeking a “common ground” where individual identities can coexist without losing their essence.

ここで表現されている「調和」とは、静的な結論ではありません。異なる要素同士が流動的に相互作用を続け、個々のアイデンティティがその本質を失うことなく共存できる「共通の基盤」を見出そうとする、絶え間ないプロセスのことなのです。

The ideals set forth by those before us 250 years ago remain unfulfilled, and at times, even seem to be wavering. When I initially created this artwork, I was not directly conscious of the phrase “Just Powers.”

250年前に先人たちが掲げた理想は、今なお完全には果たされず、むしろ揺らぎを見せているようにも感じられます。この作品を制作した当初、私は「Just Powers」という言葉を直接意識していたわけではありません。

Yet, my reality as a Japanese artist working in the United States—the inner complexities of being classified as an “alien,” and the practice of navigating the space between professed freedom and unseen surveillance—is inextricably linked to my creative process. It mirrors my attempt to find harmony through the medium of Arabic gum on an acrylic plate, a surface inherently resistant to water.

しかし、米国で活動する一人の日本人として、あるいは「エイリアン」としての葛藤、建前としての自由と見えない監視の狭間にある表現。それらは、本来水と相性の悪いアクリル板の上に、アラビアゴムという媒介を通じて調和を導き出そうとする私の制作プロセスと、分かちがたく結びついています。

This very lack of control parallels the constraints and power dynamics of our contemporary world. In that sense, the work serves as a personal record of my own resistance and reconciliation.

このコントロールのしにくさこそが、現代の不自由さや社会の力学との共通点であり、私なりの抵抗と調和の記録でもあるのです。

Reflecting on a Twelve-Year Journey / 12年の歩みを問う

To consider how my practice has evolved or deepened over the past twelve years within the public space of a local museum is a meaningful milestone for me. The exhibition brings together a diverse range of works, each confronting fundamental questions such as the nature of power and the ideals of society.

過去12年の歩みが、どのように変化し、あるいは深まってきたのか。地元の美術館という公共の空間でそれを受け止めることは、私にとってひとつの節目となっています。会場では、「権力とは何か」「社会の理想とは」といった根源的な問いに向き合った多様な作品が一堂に会しています。

物事を止めてしまう要因というのは、実にさまざまにあるものです。今回は、2月末の凍りついた日々を経て、久しぶりのご挨拶となりますね。4月だというのに、ここNYロングアイランドでは先日30℃を超える夏日が訪れたと思ったら、今日は1℃。皆様、お元気でお過ごしでしょうか。今回は近況というより、少し内面的な記録になります。

Last month was a particularly difficult period for me. It is not something I can fully articulate in public terms; if I were to name it at all, it would simply be the accumulation of daily stress. Among these, issues related to taxes have weighed heavily, though they are too personal to share here. If I could release them more openly, I imagine I might feel a certain lightness.

先月は、私にとって非常に苦しい時期でした。何がどうしてそうなったのかを公に語れるような内容ではなく、強いて言えば、日々積み重なるストレスによるものです。中でも大きかったのは税金に関する問題ですが、あまりに個人的なため、ここで共有することは控えます。率直に吐き出すことができれば、もう少し気持ちも軽くなるのだろうと思うのですが…。

Another factor casting a shadow over daily life is, as many of you are surely concerned with as well, the ongoing wars.

そして、日々に影を落としているもう一つの要因は、皆様も気にかけておられるであろう、戦争の問題です。

There are many different approaches among those who engage in creating art. In my own case, one of my ongoing activities is something I call a piece of peace. It is a modest, continuous practice grounded in the belief that even a small word, when gathered with many intentions, can grow into a larger movement. Yet now, I find myself feeling a certain fear in continuing this work. I find myself with the growing sense that freedom of expression—and the very idea of the United States as a “symbol of freedom”—may already be receding into the past.

ものづくりに関わる人にもさまざまな在り方があると思いますが、私の場合、いくつかの活動の中に「a piece of peace」と名付けた取り組みがあります。それは、たとえ小さな言葉であっても、多くの思いが集まればやがて大きな動きになるという考えのもと、細々と続けてきているものです。しかし今は、それを続けることにさえ、どこか恐れを感じてしまう…。言論の自由や、アメリカが「自由の象徴」であった時代は、すでに過去のものになりつつあるのではないか—そんな感覚を抱いています。

For this reason, I found myself unable to return to this newsletter for some time. I hesitated to fill the space with harmless, noncommittal topics. Even now, I remain uncertain about what should be said.

そうした思いもあり、差し障りのない話題で言葉を濁すことにためらいを覚え、しばらくpurple sketchesに向き合うことができませんでした。今もなお、何を語るべきか少し迷いは残っています。

Recently, I have also experienced something unusual for me: occasional sleepless nights. In 1989, when I first moved alone to New York and lived in an apartment in Chelsea, I would sometimes lie awake as countless thoughts played out across the ceiling of my room. My current state resembles that time in some ways, though now it carries a more negative tone. I believe it stems, at its core, from an unease about my place within the United States.

最近は、自分でも珍しく、夜に眠れないことがあります。1989年、初めてニューヨークで一人暮らしを始め、チェルシーのアパートに住んでいた頃、夜になるとさまざまな想像が天井に広がり、眠れなくなることがありました。現在の状態は、その時とどこか似ていますが、より不安や否定的な感情を伴っています。アメリカにおける自分の立ち位置への不安が、根底にあるのだと思います。

The other night, I finally fell asleep, only to have a vivid dream. In an environment that may or may not have been a crowd, a large glass bottle was suddenly thrown into the middle of the road. It shattered, scattering fragments in all directions. That in itself was not the problem—but then, most of the glass shards started sliding rapidly toward my feet, gaining momentum as they came. I tried desperately to jump away, yet my feet would not leave the ground. I could not jump. At that moment, I realized: this is a dream.

先日、ようやく眠りについたと思った矢先、夢を見ました。群衆の中だったのかどうかも定かではない場所で、突然、大きなガラス瓶が道の中央に投げ込まれました。ガラスは砕け、破片が四方に飛び散ります。そこまではよかったのですが、その多くが私の足元へ勢いを増して滑り込んでくるのです。必死に跳んで避けようとするのに、足が地面から離れず、うまく跳べない——その瞬間、「あぁ、これは夢だ」と気づきました。

Looking back, the dream was clearly tied to my daily experiences. Images of demonstrations and crowds from peace movements seen on social media; a large sheet of glass in a frame brought in by a student while I was assisting with a large-format digital print at work (I have always been uneasy around glass—once I become conscious of it, even touching it can feel frightening); and a recent exercise I have taken up: jump rope. I was never particularly good at it, even when I was younger, yet I try to emulate the quick, light movements of a boxer. Still, I often catch the rope on my toes, or my jumps grow shallow as I tire—small frustrations that accumulate over time.

後から振り返ると、この夢はすべて日常とつながっていました。SNSで見た平和運動のデモ行進や群衆の映像、職場で学生の大判デジタルプリントを手伝った際、その学生が用意してきた額縁に使われていた大きなガラス（実は私はガラスが苦手で、意識すると触れることすら怖くなるのです）、そして最近始めた縄跳びのエクササイズ。若い頃から得意ではありませんでしたが、ボクサーのような軽やかなステップに憧れて続けています。しかし思うようにはいかず、ロープがつま先に引っかかったり、疲れて跳ぶ高さが落ちたりと、小さなストレスが積み重なっています。

It is not always possible to maintain the composure to analyze dreams or the unconscious in this way. At times, the thought—perhaps I won’t be able to sleep again—comes first, creating tension in itself. To avoid that tension, I find myself staying up late into the night, researching, or engaging in extended conversations with AI. Whether this is productive, or whether I am simply being drawn into an endless labyrinth of AI, I cannot always tell.

こうして夢や無意識を分析できる余裕が、いつもあるわけではありません。「また眠れないのではないか」という不安が先に立ち、かえって緊張してしまうこともあります。その緊張を避けるため、深夜まで調べ物をしたり、AIと対話を重ねたりして過ごしています。それが生産的な時間なのか、それとも終わりのないAIの迷路に入り込んでいるのか、自分でも判然としません。

And yet, by setting these thoughts down in words, even little by little, I feel a sense of order gradually returning. There is a certain clarity, even a lightness, that emerges. Perhaps I should have brought myself back to writing on purple sketches sooner.

それでも、このように少しずつ言葉にして書き出していくことで、思考が整理されていく感覚があります。心もわずかに軽くなったように感じます。こうしたことなら、もっと早くpurple sketchesに向き合うべきだったのかもしれません。

In any case, I have begun to see the outline of an idea for the next issue. I hope to share it with you again in the near future. First of all, I need to find a little space in my life where joy might return.

次号についてのアイデアも少し見えてきました。近いうちに、またお届けできればと思います。まずは、毎日の中に、少しでも笑顔が戻ってくるような余白を見つけていけたらと思います。

今回は少し早めのレターです。というのも、時事的にどうしても共有したい出来事があったので。

It has been an exceptionally cold winter. Here on Long Island, the daytime temperature finally rose to around 32°F (0°C) last weekend, and I decided to step outside for a change of pace.

この冬は本当に寒い日が続きました。ここロングアイランドでも、先週末ようやく昼間の気温が0度（32F）ほどまで上がり、気分転換に外へ出てみることにしました。

One of the recent topics during this cold spell was the Hudson River in Manhattan freezing over. I had heard that it had frozen in the past, but I had never seen it myself. “Maybe this winter,” I thought. Yet I couldn’t quite bring myself to go. The truth is, I had thrown my back out and had become rather homebound.

寒さの話題といえば、ニューヨーク・マンハッタンのハドソン川が凍ったというニュース。過去にも凍結したことはあると聞いていましたが、実際に目にしたことはありません。「この冬こそは」と思いつつも、重い腰が上がらない。……というより、ぎっくり腰をやってしまい、すっかり出不精になっていたのが本当のところです。

Still, considering how mild recent winters have been, I began to feel the same restlessness I felt during the total solar eclipse — “If I miss this, who knows when I’ll see it again?” So my eldest son drove, and the three of us — my wife, our son, and I — headed to the yacht harbor in Stony Brook Village.

それでも、このところの暖冬傾向を思うと、皆既日食の時のように「今回を逃したら、次はいつになるかわからない」と妙に落ち着かなくなってきました。そこで長男に運転してもらい、妻と三人で地元のStony Brook Villageのヨットハーバーへ向かいました。

Normally, this harbor facing the Long Island Sound offers a calm seaside view. But that day was different. Perhaps because of freshwater flowing in and the tidal currents, large sheets of ice drifted slowly, like fragments of Arctic floes. Beneath a heavy sky, occasional rays of sunlight struck the ice, making it glow white. The scene felt both beautiful and slightly overwhelming, as if it might quietly swallow us whole.

ロングアイランドサウンドに面したその場所は、普段は穏やかな海辺の風景が広がるところ。しかしこの日はまったく様子が違いました。淡水の流入や潮の影響でしょうか、大きな氷の塊がゆっくりと動き、まるで流氷のように漂っています。厚い雲に覆われた空の下、時折差し込む光が氷を白く照らし、幻想的で、どこか飲み込まれそうな景色でした。

While I was absorbed in filming, a sudden dull groan sounded from behind — a thick slab of ice pressing and cracking against another. I felt my heart race. It was a reminder of nature’s quiet but undeniable force at work.

ビデオ撮影に夢中になっていると、背後から突然「グゥイッ」という鈍い音。分厚い氷が押し合い、割れる音でした。静かに、しかし確かに働く自然の力に、思わず胸が高鳴りました。

Since we were already out, we decided to continue on to Lake Ronkonkoma, the largest lake on Long Island, located near its center. In summer, people fish, swim, sail, and boat there. I assumed that if the harbor had frozen, perhaps some ice might remain on the lake. Instead, what greeted us was an entirely white surface stretching from shore to shore.

その勢いのまま、せっかくなので近所のLake Ronkonkomaへも足を伸ばすことにしました。ロングアイランドのほぼ中央に位置する、島最大の湖です。夏には釣りや水浴、セーリングやボートでにぎわう場所ですが、この日の湖岸から見えたのは一面の白い湖面でした。

In the usual lakeside parking area, I noticed several adults unloading something like large kayaks from the tops of their cars. In the distance stood two vessels fitted with sails — iceboats — resting on the frozen lake. Before us spread a vast white plain, entirely different from the lake we knew.

いつもの湖畔の駐車場に車を止めると、数人の大人たちが車の屋根から大きなカヤックのような乗り物を下ろしています。遠くを見ると、帆を立てた二台のアイスボートが氷上に。そこには、見慣れた湖とはまったく違う、果てしなく続く白い平原のような風景が広がっていました。

Lake Ronkonkoma, I later learned, has a quiet but longstanding tradition of iceboating dating back to the late nineteenth century. While the Hudson River is widely known as the birthplace of ice yachting in New York State, Ronkonkoma has maintained its own winter practice through a local club that gathers only when the cold is deep enough. It is a tradition that appears only in particularly harsh winters — a fleeting seasonal ritual.

ロンコンコマ湖は、実は19世紀後半からアイスボートが楽しまれてきた場所だそうです。ニューヨーク州ではハドソン川沿いが氷上ヨットの発祥地として有名ですが、ここロンコンコマにも長い歴史があり、地元のクラブが冬になると活動を続けています。厳しい寒さが続いた年だけに現れる、限られた季節の伝統です。

“Are you sure that’s safe?” my wife asked.

But almost without thinking, I found myself stepping out onto the ice from the shore. Carefully, in ordinary sneakers, one step at a time. It was my first time walking on a frozen lake. It felt almost magical — as though I were entering a place where I did not quite belong. The ice was not transparent like the kind often seen on social media, but milky white in some areas, mottled with tiny bubbles, and darker in others. There were traces of large cracks that had once opened and frozen again. The white sections gripped my soles; the darker ones were slick. The wind against my cheeks was sharp and cold.

「え、大丈夫なの？」と妻に心配されながらも、私は氷に誘われるように湖面へと歩き出していました。普通の運動靴で一歩ずつ慎重に。湖の上を歩くのは初めてです。魔法にかかったような、自分が本来いてはいけない場所に踏み込むような感覚。SNSでよく見るような透明な氷ではなく、白く泡を含んだような部分と、やや薄暗い部分が混在しています。時折、大きな亀裂の跡。白い部分は靴底にかみますが、暗い部分はつるりと滑る。頬を打つ風は鋭く冷たい。

When I finally lifted my gaze from my feet, sunlight spilled across the surface. It felt different from standing on a snowy ski slope — brighter, more open, yet somehow quieter. At the center of the lake, an iceboat, holding the faint wind in its sail, moved slowly and gracefully across the still, frozen surface.

下ばかり見ていた顔をふと上げると、冬の日差しがまぶしく広がり、スキー場とも違う、不思議な明るさに包まれていました。湖の中央では、わずかな風を帆に受けたアイスボートが、静まり返った氷上をゆっくりと、優雅に滑っていきます。

My son later spoke with one of the iceboaters, who told him the ice was over 12 inches thick (more than 30cm thick) — not something that would break easily. “Each boat weighs several hundred pounds,” he laughed. When the wind is strong, they can reach speeds close to 80mph (100 km/h). It is not something a novice could easily handle. Still, it was a wonderful experience — a small gift brought by this winter’s severity.

息子がアイスボートの男性から聞いた話によると、氷の厚さは30センチ以上あり、そう簡単には割れないとのこと。「ボート一台は数百ポンドあるからね」と笑いながら教えてくれたそうです。うまく風を捉えれば時速100キロ近くに達することもあるとか。素人が気軽に操縦できるものではなさそうです。それでも、この冬の厳しい寒さがもたらしてくれた、思いがけない贈り物のような一日でした。

Have you encountered any rare winter scenes where you live? Soon the weather will warm, and the lake will return to its familiar calm. But the memory of that white expanse will stay with me for some time.

前回は、「NYFA（ニューヨーク芸術財団）の助成金に申請しようと思っています」というところでお話を締めくくりましたね。
では、今回の2026年の助成金申請に、どの作品を提出したのか。

Hehe—actually, that’s a little perk reserved for paid subscribers, and I already shared it in the previous issue. I also talked about tips for applying and how I approach the NYFA grant in general. If the grant happens to come through, I might talk about it a bit more openly, but for now I’ll keep it under wraps.

えへへ、それについては有料サブスクの方だけへの特典ということで、すでに前号でお話ししてしまいました。申請の際のコツや、NYFA助成金にどのように向き合うべきか、などなど。もし助成金が通ったら、もう少し大きな声でお話しできるかな、と思っているので、今の段階では伏せておきます。

That said, I’ve never been selected by NYFA before, and realistically, the chances this time are also quite low. If it doesn’t work out, I suppose it will become a story about failure—slightly unsatisfying and, honestly, a bit disappointing, but still part of the process.

とはいえ、これまでNYFAに通ったこともありませんし、今回も採択される確率はかなり低いと思っています。通らなかったら通らなかったで、失敗談としてお話しすることになるのかな……やや不完全燃焼で、正直ちょっと残念すぎますが。

Now, has anyone noticed?
This month marks exactly two years since I started purple sketches, and this issue is the very first publication of its third year. 🥳, There were moments along the way when I felt emotionally stuck and found it painful to write at all. But knowing that the emails I send out are being opened gives me a bit of energy and nudges me into thinking, “I need to keep going.” I’m truly grateful for that.

さて、ここでお気づきの方はいらっしゃるでしょうか。
実は今月で、私が purple sketches を始めて丸2年になります。そしてこの号が、3年目に突入して最初の発行です🥳,。途中、気持ちが塞いでしまい、書くこと自体が苦しかった時期も何度かありました。でも、皆さんにお届けしたメールが開かれていると思うと、少し元気が出てきて、「やらなきゃ」という気持ちにさせてもらえています。本当に感謝しています。

There’s one more thing I should mention.
This is probably something only current paid subscribers may have noticed, but I haven’t yet issued the NFT that was planned as a paid-subscriber-only benefit. Even after two years of planning and running this newsletter, Non-Fungible Tokens have not become as widely adopted as I had expected. For those who aren’t familiar with creating wallets and navigating that ecosystem, receiving an NFT can still be far from simple. Because of that, I’ve been hesitant to move forward.

さらにもうひとつ。

Similarly, the final step of recording the peace card project from イワノワヘ / circulate (2023) on the blockchain is also still unfinished—though that was for a different reason.

同じく、2023年のイワノワヘでの作品「peace」カードをブロックチェーン上に記録する、という最終段階も、まだ完了していません。（これについては、また別の理由がありました。）

Given all this, I feel genuinely sorry toward those who were looking forward to the NFT. Please understand, however, that I haven’t given up or abandoned the idea. Something inside me feels a little blurred right now, and I haven’t fully figured out what it is yet. I’d like to watch and reflect a bit longer, and then, at some point, draw a line and move forward. Until then, I hope you’ll bear with this slower, gentler pace.

そんな状況もあり、NFTを楽しみにしてくださっていた方々には、申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいです。ただし、辞めたり、諦めたりしているわけではありません。その点だけは、どうかご理解ください。今、自分の中で何かが少しぼやけている感覚があり、それがまだはっきりと言葉になっていません。もう少し様子を見て、どこかで見切りをつけ、前に進めると思っていますので、しばらくはゆったりした進行にお付き合いいただけたら嬉しいです。

I’ve recently started experimenting with a two-tier structure for the content. Paid subscribers to purple sketches can step beyond the paywall to access special material. I struggled with this decision, but without some kind of distinction, I couldn’t find a convincing answer to my own question: “What’s the benefit of a paid subscription?” As usual, I overthought it and took too long—sorry about that.

Looking back on 2025, the first half felt full of momentum. But after reaching a peak with my work for the Nakanojo Biennale in the summer, things gradually slowed down in the latter half of the year. By November, stress from my university job had piled up as well, and to be honest, I was quite worn out.

2025年を振り返ると、前半は勢いがあったものの、夏の中之条ビエンナーレでの作品制作をピークに、後半は少しずつ動きが鈍くなっていきました。11月には大学の仕事上のストレスも重なり、正直なところ、かなり消耗していたと思います。

While writing the November letter, “After the Busyness,” I realized that what I really needed was to reset—to return to a place where I could feel like myself again. That led me to something simple: spending time immersed, loosely and without analysis, in stories told in Japanese.

11月のレター「忙しさを終えて」を書きながら、自分に対して感じていたのは、「まず一度、立て直す必要がある」ということでした。自分を取り戻すというか、自分らしくいられる環境に戻る必要がある、という感覚です。そのために選んだのが、日本語の物語にぼんやりと浸る時間でした。

I finally watched SLAM DUNK, which a designer I worked with in my twenties had once recommended but I never got around to. I also revisited the Ultraman series, which has been familiar to me since childhood and has recently been reimagined through Netflix, as well as Last Samurai Standing (イクサガミ), which was widely talked about in Japan. There were others too, but despite differences in genre and era, I realized I kept choosing stories about standing up again and again.

まだ二十代の頃、バイト先のデザイナーさんに勧められながら、見る機会がなかった『SLAM DUNK』。幼少の頃から身近にあり、近年Netflixで独自に展開されているウルトラマン(Ultraman)シリーズ。そして、日本で話題になっていた『イクサガミ』。そのほかにもいくつか作品を見ましたが、ジャンルや時代は違っていても、気づけば「何度でも立ち上がる」ような物語ばかりを選んでいたように思います。

Rather than analyzing them, I think I was letting the rhythm of the Japanese language loosen something that had become tight from living in an English-speaking environment. In some ways, this kind of time can feel like escapism for someone living abroad. And perhaps it partly is. But more than anything, what I needed was to return to a state that felt like my own. Through familiar and new stories alike, I slowly felt myself calming down and smiling again.

内容を分析するというより、英語環境で固くなっていた頭と心を、日本語のリズムに戻すための時間だったのだと思います。こうした時間は、日本から米国に来ている私にとって、現実逃避のように感じられる面もあります。確かに、そうではないとは言い切れません。ただ、それ以上に、周囲に左右されず「自分らしい状態」に戻ることのほうが、今は優先すべきことでした。懐かしいものや新しいものに触れるうちに、少しずつ気持ちが落ち着き、笑顔も戻ってきたように感じています。

With the new year, a new question emerged: what should I do next? Last year I applied for a grant connected to an event planned for the fall of 2026. I personally didn’t feel very confident about the application, but the organizers told me, “Under normal circumstances, this should go through.” When it didn’t, the disappointment hit harder than I expected.

そして新年を迎え、考え始めたのが「では次に何をすればよいのか」ということでした。実は昨年、2026年秋のイベントにつながる助成金にチャレンジしていました。自分自身では、提出した内容にそれほど強い手応えを感じていなかったのですが、企画側からは「例年の感じであれば、この申請は通るでしょう」と言われていたこともあり、結果が出なかったことへのショックは想像以上に大きいものでした。

Still, for me, facing the same conditions again with more seriousness can be surprisingly productive. That’s why I’m now turning my attention to a new challenge: the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship, whose deadline is this month.

ただ、うまくいかなかった結果を打破するために、同じテーマや条件にもう一度真剣に向き合うことは、私にとって意外と効果的だったりします。そこで今、改めて取り組もうとしているのが、今月締め切りを迎えるニューヨーク芸術財団（New York Foundation for the Arts、以下NYFA）の助成金です。

Founded in 1971, NYFA is a nonprofit organization based in New York that supports artists and emerging arts organizations across the United States. It provides more than $4 million in grants annually, along with professional development programs and online resources. One of its core programs is an unrestricted fellowship for artists living in New York State.

NYFAは1971年に設立された非営利団体で、ニューヨーク州を拠点に、全米の芸術家や新興芸術団体を支援しています。年間400万ドル以上の助成金に加え、専門的な育成プログラムやオンラインリソースを提供しており、その中には、ニューヨーク州在住の芸術家を対象とした、使用目的を限定しない助成金プログラムがあります。

Applicants must be at least 25 years old, have lived in New York State for at least two years, and not be enrolled in a degree program. The fellowship amount is $8,000, and the competition is intense. What makes this program distinctive is that it supports the artist’s vision itself, rather than a specific project. The disciplines rotate each year, and in 2026 they include Craft / Sculpture, Digital / Electronic Arts, Nonfiction Literature, Poetry, and Printmaking / Drawing / Book Arts.

対象は25歳以上、NY州在住2年以上、学位プログラムに在籍していない芸術家。助成額は8,000ドルで、競争率は非常に高いとされています。特定のプロジェクトに縛られず、芸術家のビジョンや声そのものを支援する点が、この助成金の大きな特徴です。分野は毎年ローテーションで、2026年は Craft / Sculpture、Digital / Electronic Arts、Nonfiction Literature、Poetry、Printmaking / Drawing / Book Arts の5分野が対象となっています。

I’ve applied several times before, but I’ve never felt that I truly submitted something I was satisfied with. This year, I feel the need to consciously reorganize my practice rather than simply listing everything I’ve done.

過去にも数回応募したことはありますが、自分自身が納得できる内容で提出できたと感じたことは一度もありませんでした。だからこそ今年は、自分の制作や活動をそのまま並べるのではなく、意識的に整理する必要があると感じています。

At this moment, I’ve decided to focus on two categories:
現時点での方向性としては、次の二つのジャンルにまとめることにしました。

• Digital / Electronic Arts

• Craft / Sculpture

Arriving at this decision meant considering many options—and also choosing not to include some works, even though they remain important to me.
ただ、この「まとめる」という判断に至るまでには、いくつもの選択肢を検討し、同時に、可能性があっても今回は提出しない作品を選ぶ必要がありました。

ちょうど１年ほど前でしょうか。Suno という、AIによる自動音楽生成サービスと出会った話を、このニュースレターでもお伝えしましたね。あれから早いもので、もう1年が経ちました。

You may know that services like Suno have faced scrutiny from the music industry. Major companies, including WMG (Warner Music Group), have filed lawsuits against AI companies over concerns about the sources of the music used for AI training and potential unauthorized use.

ところで、Suno をはじめとする音楽生成AIをめぐっては、AIが学習に使った楽曲の出所や、無断利用の疑いを理由に、WMG（ワーナー・ミュージック・グループ）などの大手音楽企業がAI企業を提訴していたことをご存じでしょうか。

As a user of these services myself, I have been following these developments closely. In November 2025, a milestone was reached: a settlement between the AI companies and the major music labels. According to reports, from now on, fees will be paid to rights holders for music used in deep learning. On one hand, this is a relief — but on the other, it raises a question: does this implicitly acknowledge that prior uses may have been legally questionable?

私自身も利用者のひとりとして、この動きを追ってきましたが、今年11月、その問題にひとつの区切りがつきました。AI企業と大手音楽企業とのあいだで、和解が成立したのです。報じられている内容によれば、今後ディープラーニングに使用される楽曲については、使用料を支払う、という取り決めがなされたとのことでした。ただ、この和解は、見方によっては複雑です。「これからは使用料を払う」ということは、裏を返せば「これまではグレー、あるいは違法と見なされかねない状態だったのではないか」とも受け取れてしまいます。

This also brings up a curious point. It’s interesting how humans can freely draw inspiration from others’ works without much issue, but when AI does something similar — learning patterns from large amounts of data — it often gets judged much more harshly, as if it’s copyright infringement.

人間が他人の作品からインスピレーションを得て創作することは、誰もが当たり前に認めています。しかし、同じようなプロセスをAIが行うと、なぜか別の基準で厳しく判断されてしまう。これは不思議な点です。

After all, when a person says “I was influenced by this artist,” it’s generally accepted, yet AI simply referencing data tends to be held to a different standard. From a human perspective, deep learning can feel more like direct imitation than genuine creative inspiration. The line between the two remains quite blurry, and it’s still very much a gray area without clear boundaries.

結局のところ、AIのディープラーニングは大量のデータを参照してパターンを学ぶだけなのに、人間側からは「ただの模倣」や「複製に近いもの」と映りやすく、著作権侵害との線引きが非常に曖昧になってしまう。人間の「影響を受けた創作」とAIの「トレーニング」は本質的に近いはずなのに、なぜAIだけが特別に問題視されるのか — このグレーゾーンは、まだ社会全体で明確な合意が得られていないと感じます。

I have appreciated AI services like Suno as helpful tools, especially for people who are not fully trained in musical expression. They can generate pieces that are simple yet valuable. At the same time, having invested time and effort in mastering the craft of music creation, I cannot help but feel that results generated from learning on vast amounts of pre-existing material may constitute an overreach of copyright.

私はこれまで、Suno を含むAIサービスを、表現の訓練を十分に受けていない人にとっての、有効なツールとして評価してきました。シンプルに、生成された音楽を「作品と呼びうるもの」として受け取れる場面も確かにあります。一方で、時間をかけて技術を身につけ、作品を作ってきた立場から見ると、世の中に存在する膨大な素材を学習して得られた結果が、「著作権の濫用」にあたるのではないか、という考えが頭をよぎるのも事実です。

I myself experienced, when I was younger, the frustration of having my own work used without permission by a major advertising agency. Perhaps because of that, I have grown somewhat disillusioned with AI-generated works that rely mostly on the AI itself for creativity. Naturally, works by artists who skillfully incorporate AI while expressing their own voice are entirely different.

私自身、若い頃に自作の作品を大手広告代理店に無断で使われた経験があります。そのため、著作権をめぐる争いには、正直うんざりしている部分もあります。そうした経験も影響してか、AIに作品性の多くを委ねて生まれた表現を「自分の作品」としているモノに対して、幻滅しているのも事実です。もちろん、AIを道具として使いこなし、自分らしさをしっかり表現している作家の作品は、まったく別物だと思っています。

The concern for me is no longer about focusing on the act of creating the work itself, but about whether the work is “truly safe” or might be contested later. What should be a fun exploration of new creative possibilities often comes with an underlying caution.

ただ、作品を作る行為そのものよりも、「これは本当に大丈夫なのか」「後から否定されるのではないか」という不安が、先に立つようになってしまった。その感覚が、私にとっては大きな変化でした。本来なら、自分ではできないことを手助けしてくれる未知の創作は、もっと楽しいはずなのに、どこかに常に警戒心が入り込むようになったのです。

When I heard about the WMG settlement in November, I felt a small sense of relief. At least AI-generated music was not being categorically rejected. Yet at the same time, it didn’t feel like a return to full creative freedom — it felt more like the establishment of new limits. Rather than resolving the dispute, it seemed the boundaries had been redrawn through money and contracts.

11月に報じられた WMG との和解のニュースを聞いたとき、正直に言えば、少し肩の力が抜けた気もしました。少なくとも、AI音楽そのものが即座に全面否定される方向には進まなかったからです。しかし同時に、その和解が「自由の回復」ではなく、「新しい制限が確定した」出来事のようにも感じられました。争いが終わったというより、資本と契約によって、線が引き直された。その印象が、どうしても拭えなかったのです。

As a creator, I stand firmly against copyright abuse and believe that the rights of artists should be protected. My concern with this settlement is not the copyright itself, but how it can be used by large corporations as a tool for market control and monopolization.

私は、ものを作る立場として、著作権の濫用には明確に反対していますし、クリエイターの権利は守られるべきだと考えています。ただ、今回の和解で気になるのは、著作権そのものというより、それが巨大な産業によって、市場支配や独占の道具として使われてしまうことです。

The fundamental question of whether AI learning is legal or not seems to be sidelined, replaced by a discussion of “who pays whom and how much.” That shift feels deeply troubling.

AIの学習が違法かどうか、という本質的な問いが十分に議論されないまま、「誰が、誰に、いくら払うのか」という話にすり替えられていく。この流れには、強い違和感を覚えます。

This settlement does not clarify whether AI learning is right or wrong. Technology that copyright law did not anticipate is being addressed by powerful companies before society at large has had a chance to discuss it. The result may create a perception that “AI services contracted with major labels are safe, while others are risky,” placing independent or small-scale creators in an increasingly precarious position.

今回の和解は、AIによる学習が正しいのか、間違っているのかを明らかにしたわけではありません。著作権法が想定していなかった技術に対して、本来なら社会全体で考えるべき問いを、大手企業同士が資本の力で先に囲い込んでしまったようにも見えます。その結果、「大手と契約しているAIサービスは安全で、そうでないものは危険」という空気が生まれ、個人や小規模な表現の場が、より不安定な立場に置かれていくのではないか。そんな懸念も拭えません。

An additional concern is that as AI companies secure legitimacy through contracts with major labels, indie and unaffiliated artists’ works may become less protected. The question of “who has a contract” becomes a measure of legitimacy, leaving the works of those without contracts vulnerable to use as training material. This is a problem not only of copyright but of power dynamics.

さらに心配なのは、AI企業が大手音楽産業と契約を結び「正当性」を獲得したとき、その枠組みの外にいるインディーズや無所属のアーティストの作品が、相対的に守られにくくなる可能性です。「誰と契約しているか」が正義の基準になってしまえば、声を上げにくい個人の作品が、知らないうちに学習素材として扱われる危険性も高まります。これは、著作権の問題である以前に、力関係の問題だと感じています。

On the other hand, I also see potential positive developments. In illustration and photography, stock images have long allowed countless anonymous creators to make their work available under defined conditions for compensation. If AI companies follow a similar model — paying for the materials they train on — new types of artists and new forms of engagement could emerge.

その一方で、この流れが必ずしも暗い未来だけを意味するとも思っていません。イラストや写真の世界には、ストックフォトやストックイラストという仕組みがあり、多くの匿名の作家が、自身の作品を一定の条件と対価のもとで提供してきた歴史があります。もしAI企業が、このモデルにならい「学習するための素材」を明確に購入し、対価を支払う方向へ進むのであれば、そこには新しいタイプのアーティストや、新しい関わり方が生まれる余地もあるはずです。

A real-world example is Adobe’s generative AI, Firefly. Firefly limits its training data to images provided via Adobe Stock or in the public domain, clearly avoiding the use of scraped images from the web. In fact, for the artwork “not too late, still hope #4” featuring a child holding flowers that I introduced above, as well as the dove material used in the Anaglyph 3D image from the previous issue, I used Adobe Firefly.

その実例として挙げられるのが、Adobeが提供する生成AI「Firefly」です。Fireflyは、学習に使われる素材を「Adobe Stockに提供された画像」や「著作権が切れたパブリックドメイン素材」に限定していることを、明確に打ち出しています。無断でネット上の画像を集めて学習させているわけではなく、あらかじめ利用条件が整理された素材を使う、という立場です。実は、上で紹介した花を持つ子どもが描かれている作品not too late, still hope #4や先号のAnaglyph 3D画像の鳩の素材も、私は Adobe Firefly を利用しています。

Adobe Stock is a massive platform where countless creators, including amateurs, provide their work under specific conditions. Firefly extends that framework into AI, showing a model where what the AI learns and whose materials it uses are clearly defined. It demonstrates that AI can operate without “stealing” creative work, but within an existing framework for distributing and compensating content. However, I don’t know what kind of contract was in place at the time for the work from 10 years ago…

Adobe Stock は、無名の作家も含め、多くのクリエイターが作品を提供してきた巨大なストックプラットフォームです。その延長線上に Firefly があると考えると、AIが「何を学ぶのか」を契約と対価によって明示するモデルの、ひとつの完成形だとも言えます。AIが創作を奪う存在としてではなく、既存の素材流通の枠組みの中で管理されている点は、特徴的です。ただし、10年前の作品について、当時どのような契約が結ばれていたのかまでは、私は把握していません。

Of course, this model is not ideal for all creators. Questions remain about the fairness of compensation and the market impact of AI-generated works. Still, Firefly proves that AI can learn from materials transparently and responsibly — a model that could potentially apply to music as well.

もちろん、こうしたモデルが、すべての創作者にとって理想的とは限りません。報酬の妥当性や、AI生成物が市場に与える影響など、課題は残っています。それでも Firefly は「AIが何を学び、誰の素材が使われているのか」を不透明なままにしない、という方向性を示しています。その意味で「学習可能な素材を買い、使う」というモデルが現実に成立しうることを、すでに証明している例だと言えるでしょう。

In the music world, royalty-free music and sound effect libraries exist, providing a comparable framework. In theory, AI services could learn from such licensed materials, paying fees and respecting rights, offering one of the cleanest approaches to AI-assisted music creation. Some AI services are already heading in this direction, demonstrating that the Firefly-style model could work for music too.

音楽の世界にも、ロイヤリティフリー音楽や効果音など、ストックフォトに近い形で素材を扱う企業が存在します。理屈の上では、こうした素材企業と音楽生成AIが組み、契約と対価のもとで学習させるモデルは、最もクリーンな方法のひとつです。実際、一部のAIは権利処理済み音源のみを使う方向を示しており、画像分野と同じ発想は、音楽でも成立しうることが見え始めています。

At the same time, major labels may be concerned less with copying individual songs than with reproducing an artist’s style or musical grammar developed over many years. As a result, learning models are evolving in two directions: one focuses on anonymizing material to prevent any specific style from emerging — what we might call “AI material.” The other treats style itself as a managed asset, under the control of labels or rights holders, or “AI major.”

その一方で、大手レコード会社が警戒しているのは、個々の楽曲のコピーというより、アーティストやレーベルが長年培ってきた「作風」や音楽的文法そのものが再現されることなのかもしれません。そのため、素材中心の学習モデルだけでは不十分だと考えられ、音楽生成AIの学習のあり方は、次第に二つの方向へ分かれつつあるように見えます。ひとつは、特定の作風が浮かび上がらないよう、学習素材を匿名化し、「誰のものでもない音の素材」として扱う方向です。作風を意図的に前面に出さない、この考え方は、いわば「AI素材」と呼べるものかもしれません。もうひとつは、作風そのものを価値として明確に管理し、大手レーベルや権利者の管理下でAIに扱わせる方向です。こちらは、作風が商品として管理される「AIメジャー」とでも言える考え方でしょう。

AI in music raises not just copyright questions but also questions about who controls artistic styles. It’s complicated, to say the least.

音楽生成AIをめぐる問題は、著作権だけでなく、「どの作風が、誰の管理下に置かれるのか」という問いでもあり、なかなかややこしい話です。

From my perspective, the most stifling aspect of creating art is having to consider what is allowed before even starting. The drive to make something, to experiment, should not be curtailed by legal risks or industry practices. The background of money and monopolies makes it even harder to accept the current trend.

私自身、AI企業の在り方を論じる以前に、創作において最も息苦しいと感じるのは、「作る前から許されるかどうかを考えなければならない」状況です。作品を保管する場所がないから作れない、という現実的な悩みを抱えているだけでも大変なのに、「作りたいから作る」「試したいから試す」という衝動が、法的リスクや業界の都合によって抑え込まれてしまうことは、あってはならないと思っています。その背景に「金による支配」やモノポリー化を感じるからこそ、私はこの流れに素直に納得できません。

The Suno-WMG settlement brings both relief and disappointment: not a total defeat, but not full freedom either. Creative space has gained a bit of stability, yet unseen boundaries have taken on clearer shapes. This feeling is shared by many who wish to express themselves with AI, even if it is hard to put into words. That is why this is more than industry news — it is a question about the future of creation itself.
How do you feel about it?

今回の Suno と WMG の和解は、安心と同時に、失望ももたらした出来事だったのかもしれません。完全な敗北ではないけれど、完全な自由でもない。創作の場が少しだけ安定した代わりに、見えない柵が、よりはっきりと姿を現し始めた。そんな感覚があります。この感覚は、AIを使って表現しようとする多くの人が、言葉にできずに抱えているものかもしれません。だからこそ、これは単なる業界ニュースではなく、「これから作るという行為が、どこへ向かうのか」を問いかける出来事なのだと思っています。皆さんは、どう感じられますか。

— So, after thinking a lot about the blurry lines of copyright triggered by AI (sorry, that got a bit long😅), my simple conclusion was, “Well, then I should just play the guitar and sing myself.” And that’s exactly what I did.
Maybe it’s also because of my age, but things like breathing, getting calluses on my fingertips, and the physical feedback you only feel because you’re a material being alive—right now, I really treasure that very sense of “being present.”
While continuing to value that feeling of tangible existence, I think it would be interesting to keep experimenting with various things, incorporating AI along the way.

It has been quite a while since my last update here. To those of you who subscribe to the paid edition, I apologize for letting my monthly posting pace slip.
There were many things I wanted to share, but I hesitated, feeling that they might drift too far from the focus of an “art-related newsletter.”

こちらでは久しぶりの更新になってしまいました。有料購読の皆さまには、月一ペースがすっかり遅くなってしまい、申し訳なく思っています。
誰かに聞いてもらいたいことはたくさんあったのですが、「アート関連のニュースレター」という観点から外れてしまうのではないかと感じ、発信をためらっていました。

However, since this is a letter written by an artist, I realized that everyday experiences and personal moments are also an important part of the background that nourishes my work. With that in mind, I decided it would be alright to write about them—and that is how I’ve begun this slightly personal update.

ですが、作家が発信するレターであれば、背景となる日常や個人的な出来事も、作品の糧となる大切な要素でもあります。そう思い直し、少しパーソナルな内容かもしれませんが、こうして書き始めています。

I usually work in the Art Department at the State University of New York as a support technician, mainly assisting faculty and students with digital-related matters. Recently, several things happened at work that affected me more deeply than I expected. Even when I speak up honestly with the intention of helping—trying to act in a way that supports others—my words can sometimes be interpreted differently depending on the situation. As a result, I began to feel that my sense of “trust” in my position had become unstable, and I found myself growing weary of interacting with others.

私は普段、NY州立大学の美術学部で、主にデジタル関連を担当するサポートテクニシャンとして、先生方や学生のサポートをしています。その職場で、このところ色々なことがありました。サポートする立場として良かれと思って率直に発言しても、時と場合によっては思わぬ受け取られ方をしてしまうものです。そこから自分の「信頼」という立ち位置が不安定に感じられ、周囲との関わりに嫌気がさしてくることもありました。

I try not to worry about what people think, but when my emotional resilience weakens, a quiet resistance toward “sharing” and “expressing” myself starts to spread. This time, I found my feelings closing off again for the first time in a while.
Small worries grew larger, I started losing sleep, and avoiding communication began to feel like the only way to protect myself. That made it increasingly difficult to take the initiative to express anything at all. Since starting this newsletter, creating artwork and writing have both come to feel like interconnected forms of expression. And because of that, I found myself unable to engage with them for a while.

他人の反応を気にしないようにしていても、気持ちが弱ったときにはじわじわと「発信すること・表現することへの抵抗感」が広がり始め、今回は久しぶりに気持ちが塞いでしまいました。些細な心配ごとが大きく膨らみ、だんだん眠れなくなり、その結果、回避する手段として「自分から積極的に物事を発信すること」に強い抵抗を感じるようになってしまいました。ニュースレターを始めた今では、美術作品の制作も文章を書くことも、すべてが「表現のツール」として繋がって感じられるようになり、しばらく手がつけられなくなっていたのです。

When this feeling persists for too long, I start losing confidence in my very existence. I become suspicious of everything, even of myself. Since this happens to me from time to time, my artwork sometimes becomes a way for me to recognize and rediscover “the meaning and value of being alive.” Creating something feels almost like a form of rehabilitation—a way to bring myself back to a sense of “normal.”

これがひどく続くと、自分の存在そのものに自信が持てなくなってしまいます。疑心暗鬼になり、自分自身のことさえも疑わしく思えてくる。こういったことはしばしばあるので、私の作品は「生きている意味、そしてその価値」を自分自身が見出し、それを認めるための行為になっている時もあります。「普通」でいられるよう、リハビリのような感覚で何かをつくるんですね。

And I also hope that these works and writings, born from that process, can reach others who may easily fall into a similar state of mind or circumstance. If they could carry a gentle message like, “It’s okay to live more freely, more loosely—in your own way,” that would make me happy.
Creating art simply to exist. …Ah, this could get long, so I’ll leave the rest for another time.

そして、そうして生まれた作品や文章が、同じような心境や境遇に陥りやすい人たちへ、「もっと自由に、もっといい感じに“テキトー”に生きていいんだよ」というポジティブなメッセージとして届けばいいな、とも思っています。
存在のための作品づくり。……あぁ、話が長くなりそうなので、この続きはまた別の機会に。

Since I started writing on Substack, knowing that there are people who look forward to these posts—even a little—has been an enormous source of support for me. I prefer the version of myself that keeps moving forward, step by step, rather than the one who dwells too long on what’s already happened. That way of living should suit me.
But this time, taking even a single step was unexpectedly difficult.

この Substack に寄稿するようになってから、ここに書いていることを少しでも楽しみにしてくださる方がいると思うと、本当に大きな支えになります。過ぎたことにふさぎ込む自分より、一歩一歩でも前に進む自分のほうが好きだし、それが私の性に合っている——はずなのです。
ただ、その「一歩」が今回はなかなか出せませんでした。

Still, it finally feels as though a thick fog is beginning to lift, and I can see a little more clearly again. So, with a refreshed mindset, I’d like to share an update from the past month.
I’m deeply grateful for the connections with all of you who helped me arrive at this point.

とはいえ、ようやく少しずつ濃霧が晴れるように視界が開けてきたので、気を取り直してこの1ヵ月のご報告をしようと思います。
そんな気持ちにさせてくれた皆さんとの繋がりに、あらためて感謝しています。

Now then, let me give you a quick overview of my past month. Looking back, I realize there were actually many more enjoyable moments than worries.

First, right after the Nakanojo Biennale ended on October 13th, I finally got to repair a guitar I had been looking forward to working on. I did the repair on October 14th. Some of you might be wondering, “Wait—which guitar?”

ではでは、私の過去1ヵ月をざっくりとご紹介しましょう。振り返ってみると、最近の悩みごとよりも楽しいことのほうが、実はたくさんあったはずなのです。

まず、中之条ビエンナーレが 10/13 に終了したのとほぼ同時に、ずっと楽しみにしていたギターの修繕を 10/14 に行いました。「え、どのギター？」と思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんね。

Well, in September, I found an old Yamaha classical guitar with nylon strings on Facebook Marketplace, listed for—believe it or not—just $15. So of course, I brought it home. I’d love to share that whole story in more detail another time.

As for the repair itself, aside from the research I did beforehand, it took about two days to complete since the glue needed plenty of time to dry.

実は9月、Facebook Marketplace で、なんと 15ドル で売りに出されていたヤマハの古いナイロン弦クラシックギターを購入していたのです！この話はゆっくりお伝ししたいので、また別の機会に紹介しますね。

今回の修繕は、接着剤をしっかり乾燥させる必要があったので、リサーチ期間を除けばだいたい2日ほどで仕上げました。

At the same time, around October 15th, I began working on a projection-mapped video for a one-night event held at Gallery North, Setauket, NY. Because the piece would be projected onto one of the buildings inside the venue, I first visited the site to examine the walls and surrounding structures before starting production. The ideas didn’t come easily, and I struggled for a while, but I somehow managed to complete the piece during the final two days before the deadline.

それと並行して、10/15ごろから取り組んでいたのが、NYロングアイランドにあるGallery Northで行われた一日限定のナイトイベント用プロジェクションマッピング映像の制作でした。会場内にある建物に投射するため、現地で壁面などを実際に確認したうえで、作品づくりを始めました。なかなかアイデアがまとまらず苦戦しましたが、締め切り直前の2日間でどうにか作品を仕上げることができました。

After the Gallery North showing on October 23rd, the next event was the opening of MoCA L.I.ght hosted by the Patchogue Arts Council on October 25th. This year, instead of participating in Art on the Marquee—a project I join almost every year that displays GIF animations on a movie theater façade—I decided to try something entirely new: creating Anaglyph 3D images. Although this ran parallel to the night event, it didn’t involve projecting images with a projector. Instead, the works become three-dimensional when viewed through the provided red-and-blue 3D glasses.

Gallery Northでの展示（10/23）のあとは、Patchogue Arts Council が主催する MoCA L.I.ght のオープニング（10/25）。今回は、毎年のように参加している映画館のファサードを使ったGIF映像展示「Art on the Marquee」ではなく、Anaglyph 3D画像 の制作に初めて挑戦しました。これはナイトイベントと同時進行ではあるものの、プロジェクターを使った映像投影ではなく、赤と青の3Dグラス越しに見ると立体的に見える仕組みの作品です。

Up until that point, I had been enjoying myself with a lot of momentum, but once November arrived, my work at the university—which I mentioned earlier—became overwhelmingly busy. The workload made me feel as though the support I was providing was of unsatisfactory, low quality. Even though no one was directly criticizing me, I found myself constantly judging my own work, and I ended up feeling more down than I should have.

ここまでは勢いよく楽しんでいたのですが、11月に入ってからは、先ほどお伝えした大学での仕事があまりにも忙しくなりました。その忙しさのせいで、自分が納得のいかない低いクオリティのサポートをしていると感じ、特に誰かに指摘されているわけでもないのに、自分でダメ出しをする日々が続き、少し落ち込みすぎてしまったのです。

The contrast with late October probably made it worse, but the main reason was simply that the department was understaffed. I had taken on more requests than I could reasonably handle alone. In the past, I could firmly say “no” when it was too much, but at some point, saying that became a forbidden word, and that has contributed to this ongoing struggle. It’s a challenge that’s not easy to resolve.

10月後半とのギャップが大きかったことも影響しているとは思いますが、主な原因は単純に大学の学部の人手不足です。私一人では抱えきれない量のリクエストを抱えてしまったことが要因です。過去には、無理な時はしっかり「ノー」と言えていたのですが、ある時を境にその言葉を禁句とされてしまったことが、この苦しみの背景にあります。なかなか解決できない悩みでもあります。

It would help to have more understanding people on site, but even trusting them feels difficult at times. I try to manage and coexist with this side of myself, but occasionally, my balance tips.

現場にもう少し理解者がいれば良いのですが、その人たちを信用することにさえ抵抗があるのです。そんな自分とうまく付き合ってはいるものの、たまにバランスを崩してしまいます。

At the end of October, another idea suddenly came to me. I submitted a project as a curator for an international online art event with a deadline of October 25. Ideally, I should have prepared for this back in the summer, but I realized it too late, and since it’s an annual event with a deadline extension, I decided to apply on a bit of a “spur-of-the-moment” impulse.

10月末、もうひとつ突然思いついたことがありました。10/25を締め切りとする国際的なオンラインアートイベントに、キュレーターとしてある企画を持ち込んでいたのです。本来であれば、これも夏頃に準備すべきものでしたが、気がつくのが遅れたこと、各年恒例の行事であること、そして締め切りが延長されたこともあり、「思いつき」の勢いで応募してみました。

However, this project required the cooperation of artists who would contribute works. I had absolutely no funding myself, so I needed close friends willing to support this seemingly reckless, ultra-short-term challenge. Additionally, since the main theme of the exhibition centered on “works using A.I.,” I reached out to people around me who were already working with AI-based art.

しかし、この企画には作品を出展してくれる作家さんの協力が必要です。私自身、資金は全くないため、ごく身近で、この無謀とも言える超短期間の挑戦を快くサポートしてくれる仲間が必要でした。さらに、本展のテーマの中心が「A.I.を利用した作品」であったため、私の身近でAIによる作品制作に携わっている人たちに声をかけさせてもらいました。

Despite the very short notice, seven people expressed interest in participating, and five of them signed the participation agreements and prepared their works. I am truly grateful to them.

短期間の呼びかけにもかかわらず、7名の方が参加に興味を示してくださり、そのうち5名が参加同意書にサインしたうえで作品の準備をしていただきました。本当に感謝しかありません。

However, even though I submitted the project idea for the exhibition, as of the start of the event, I still have not received any response from the organizing committee. It is extremely frustrating and disheartening. I feel deeply sorry toward the artists who generously agreed to participate.

しかし、展覧会参加の企画アイデアを応募したにもかかわらず、実は会期が始まった今もなお、実行委員会からはお返事をいただけていない状態です。なんとも歯がゆく、やるせない気持ちでいっぱいです。参加協力してくださった作家の皆さんには、申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいです。

However, I am not going to let this end here. I plan to make this project publicly accessible in the near future, once a bit more preparation has been done. Private access has already been set up for the artists who signed the participation agreements.

皆さん、こんにちは。
気がつけば早いもので、中之条ビエンナーレ2025も本日10月13日で最終日を迎えました。

I stayed in Nakanojo during July and August to create my work, which I completed on August 10. After that, I extended my stay for three more days, waiting for the sunlight to shine on the piece once again. Finally, on August 13, the sun returned, and I was able to finish photographing the work. At that moment, an idea came to me — to create a video tour where the artist introduces their own work.

私は7月から8月にかけて中之条町で滞在制作を行い、8月10日に制作を終えました。その後、滞在を3日延長し、再び太陽の光が作品に当たる日を待っていました。そして8月13日、ようやく日差しが戻ってきたおかげで、作品の撮影を無事に終えることができました。そのとき、ひとつのアイデアが浮かびました。――作家自身が自分の作品を紹介するビデオツアーを作ろう、と。

The video I’m introducing this time is the one I created back then.
To be honest, I hesitated about whether I should share this video tour during the exhibition period. I had mixed feelings and some inner conflict about it.

今回ご紹介するのは、そのときに制作したビデオツアーです。実はこのビデオツアーは、展示の開催期間に合わせて公開するべきかどうか、少し迷っていました。そこには、いろいろな思いや葛藤があったからです。

That’s because I believe there are two perspectives when it comes to how people experience art. One is that each viewer brings their own sensitivity, and it’s not something an artist should impose or intentionally guide through their own interpretation.

というのも、作品を鑑賞する人にはそれぞれの感性があり、その感性は作家が自分の制作意図を押し付けたり、意図的に誘導したりするものではない、という考え方があります。

The other is the artist’s wish for viewers to truly understand and feel the intention and emotions behind the work. I found myself torn between these two ideas.

一方で、作家が作品に込めた意図や想いを鑑賞者にしっかりと受け取ってもらいたい、という気持ちもあります。私はその二つの間で、ずっと揺れていました。

When I was in graduate school, my main focus was creating interactive art using technology. Interactive art refers to works that respond or react in various ways when visitors approach or interact with them. Through these experiences, each viewer gains their own impressions and insights.

私は大学院生の頃、テクノロジーを用いたインタラクティブアートを中心に制作していました。インタラクティブアートとは、来場者が作品に近づいたり触れたりすることで、作品がさまざまな反応や応答を示すものです。そのような体験を通して、鑑賞者一人ひとりが異なる感想や気づきを得るのだと思います。

At one point, I created a work that didn’t use any technology. It was made from a thin piece of lumber about 7 feet(2.13m) long, and it was designed so that viewers had to walk in order to see the entire piece. Even though it was an analog work, for me it was a genuine form of interactive art — one in which the artist structured the piece while anticipating the flow of the viewer’s experience, guiding them through the work.

あるとき、テクノロジーを使わずに、長さ約7フィート(2.13m)の細いランバー材を使った作品を制作しました。その作品は、鑑賞者が実際に歩かなければ全体を観ることができない構成になっていました。私にとってそれはアナログな作品であっても、「人を作品へと導く」という点において、作家が鑑賞者の体験の流れを想定しながら構成した、れっきとしたインタラクティブアートだったのです。

After that, I created a work that combined quadraphonic surround sound with video, making full use of technology. From the artist’s point of view, there was a “sweet spot” where one could truly experience the movement of the sound. However, no matter what I did, viewers wouldn’t stay in that spot. So I came up with the idea of placing footprint-shaped stickers on the floor. Once I did that, the audience intuitively understood that this was where they were supposed to stand — and in that way, I succeeded in physically guiding them.

その次には、テクノロジーを駆使して、クアドラソニックのサラウンドサウンドと映像を組み合わせた作品を制作しました。作家の立場から言うと、その作品を本当の意味で体感するためには、音の動きを最も感じられる“スイートスポット”が存在していました。しかし、観客はどうしてもその場所にとどまってくれません。そこで私が考えたのが、床に足跡の形をしたシールを貼るというアイデアでした。そのシールを貼ってからは、観客が自然と「ここに立つべきだ」と理解し、結果として観客をフィジカルに誘導することに成功したのです。

However, this time I felt that the content of the work wasn’t being fully conveyed to the audience. To address that, I decided to place an explanatory handout — something often seen in commercial galleries — that also served as a guide to the exhibition. During the class critique, however, opinions were divided. Some said,
“Too much explanation takes away the viewer’s imagination.”

しかし今度は、その作品の内容があまり観客に伝わっていないように感じました。
そこで私は、コマーシャルギャラリーでよく見かけるような、展示案内を兼ねた解説プリントを置くことにしました。ところが、クラスの講評会ではその紙について賛否両論がありました。
「説明を加えすぎると、見る者の想像力を奪ってしまう」と。

And they were right. If you already know the answer to a riddle, there’s no joy in solving it. In the same way, I believe that when a hundred people experience an artwork, there are a hundred different interpretations — and together, they make the work complete. That, to me, is the true nature of art.

確かにその通りです。クイズの答えを最初から知っていたら、解く楽しみはありません。アートの鑑賞も同じで、100人の鑑賞者がいれば100通りの答えがあり、ひとつの作品がその多様な解釈の中に存在する——私はそう思うのです。
それこそが本来のアートの姿なのだと。

With that belief in mind, I struggled with the question of whether it was truly right to release this video tour during the exhibition period.

こうした考えを軸にしているため、今回のビデオツアーを展示期間中に公開してしまうことが本当に良いのかどうか、私はずっと迷いと葛藤を抱えていました。

Today marks the end of the Nakanojo Biennale 2025.
At this point, I feel there’s no longer any need to hesitate about revealing the “answer” at the beginning.

At the same time, I’m grateful and honored that my work アワイコユ / leap has been accepted by the town of Nakanojo as a permanent installation.

Then I asked myself once again,
“Hmm... in that case, is it really okay for the artist to explain their intention?”

本日をもって、中之条ビエンナーレ2025は終了します。そして私は、もう最初に「答え」を出すことをためらう必要はないのだと思いました。

その一方で、幸いなことに、私の作品「アワイコユ / leap」は中之条町にパーマネント作品（恒久展示）として受け入れていただけることになりました。

そこで改めて考えました。
「うーん、となると、作家の意図を語ってしまっていいのだろうか？」

By now, I can no longer find the answer on my own. That’s why I decided to share a video in which I talk about the work — hoping that each of you, as viewers, might find your own answer through it. But don’t worry — I haven’t revealed everything in this video. There are still many layers of meaning, and even I don’t fully understand some aspects of it yet. Someday, I’d like to talk about those parts here in this newsletter as well.
When that will be… I’m not quite sure.

お待たせしました。今号は、9月14日に開催された Arts on Terry にてブースを出展した Peace Connections 2025 のご報告です。
今回で2回目の参加となり、昨年よりも雰囲気に慣れたこともあって、早めに会場に到着し、ほとんどすべてが順調にスタートしました。天候が心配されていましたが、当日は快晴に恵まれ、まさにアートフェア日和となりました。

Here on Long Island, when people talk about an “art fair,” it usually means that each participant brings their own 10-by-10-foot tent, sets it up, puts up walls, and then hangs their artwork—a process that can be quite a challenge.
In my case, however, since my booth participated as a cultural partner introducing Japanese culture (this time through paintings and illustrations), the Patchogue Arts Council, the event organizer, provided a large, sturdy tent that was already equipped with metal grid walls. Together with the other cultural partner groups, all we had to do was bring in our artworks and items for sale.

ここロングアイランドで一般的に「アートフェア」といえば、参加者は自前の10フィート×10フィートのテントを持参し、設置して壁を立て、そこに作品を掛けていく、という段取りを踏みます。これがなかなか大変な作業です。
しかし、私のブースは日本文化（今回は絵やイラスト）の紹介を目的としたカルチャーパートナーとしての参加のため、主催の Patchogue Arts Council が用意してくださった大きくて頑丈なテントの中に、すでに金属製の格子壁が設置された状態で迎えていただきました。私たちは他のカルチャーパートナーグループと共に、その中に作品や物販のみを搬入させてもらっています。

Last year, the wall space turned out to be smaller than I had expected, so I couldn’t set up the layout I had prepared, which left me a little unsettled. This year, however, I had heard that the venue would be larger, so while preparing to feature the Peace Cards as the main display, I was worried that I might not have enough cards to cover the main wall.

前回は想像していたほど壁の面積がなく、準備していた展示レイアウトが組めずに少し戸惑いました。しかし今年は、会場がより広くなると聞いていたので、ピースカードをメインに展示する準備を進める中で、むしろ「メインの壁に飾るカードが足りなくなるのでは」と心配していました。

In reality, though, the exhibition space was almost the same size as last year—or perhaps even a bit smaller. Fortunately, since there were fewer staff members involved this time, it didn’t cause much of an issue.
What made a difference this year was that I brought a 32-inch TV monitor as a visual centerpiece. By placing it toward the back, it caught visitors’ attention and drew them in, allowing me to build the overall balance of the display around it.

ところが、ふたを開けてみると展示スペースの広さは前回とほぼ同じか、むしろ若干小さいくらいでした。幸い、今回は関わるスタッフが前回より少なかったため、大きな問題にはなりませんでした。
さらに今回はアイキャッチとなる32インチのテレビモニターを持参していたので、それを奥に配置して来場者の目を引き、そこから全体の展示バランスを組み立てていきました。

This being my second time, I felt much more at ease compared to last year, when I struggled with challenges like strong winds and glaring natural light due to lack of experience. This time, I was able to take everything in stride with almost no confusion.
Another improvement was that instead of facing the table inward, I set it up slightly along the street. This allowed me to display smaller works directly on the table, making them easier for visitors to see. It was a small adjustment, but it made a big difference in the outcome.
Perhaps thanks to that change, six of Clara’s small Hardanger embroidery pieces displayed on the table were sold.

2回目となる今回は、大風が吹いたり自然光が眩しかったりと、経験不足から対応に苦労した前回と比べ、そうした状況も自然に受け止められ、ほとんど戸惑うことはありませんでした。
また、テーブルを内側に向けるのではなく、通り沿いに少し張り出す形で設置できたことで、小品をテーブルの上に並べてお客様にわかりやすくご覧いただけるようになりました。小さな工夫ですが、結果につながる大きな進歩だったと思います。
そのおかげもあってか、テーブルに置いたClaraさんのハーダンガー刺繍の小作品が6点売れました。

As with last year, a Piece of Peace received many warm words from visitors. Since the cards were displayed facing the street, some people even stopped outside the venue to read the messages written on the back.
The director also shared an encouraging thought: “It might be interesting to start the call for submissions about six months earlier. There could even be a future where something stands on its own from this event.”
As I mentioned during the open call, the Peace Cards collected this time will lead into my upcoming projection mapping work, “Echoing a Piece of Peace,” planned for next fall. I’ll share more details as the concept takes shape.

a Piece of Peace には、昨年同様に温かい言葉を何度もかけていただきました。カードの展示方法が通りに面していたこともあり、会場の外からカード裏のメッセージを読んでいかれる方もいらっしゃいました。
また、ディレクターの方からは「半年ほど早めに募集をかけてみるのも面白いかもしれません。このイベントだけで将来的に何かできる可能性がありますね」といったお言葉もいただきました。
募集時にもお伝えしましたが、今回届いたピースカードは、来年秋に向けて私が制作する予定のプロジェクションマッピング作品 「Echoing a Piece of Peace」 へとつながっていきます。構想が固まり次第、改めてご案内いたしますね。

For the Japanese Artist for Peace section, four artists submitted their works this year. I prepared two iPads, each showcasing the works of two artists, and also featured all four artists’ works on the main screen. A third iPad was used to present the works of last year’s participating artists, while two vertically placed iPads to the right of the TV displayed only my own works.

Japanese Artist for Peace のコーナーでは、今年は4名の作家さんにご応募いただきましたので、2名分の作品を1台のiPadにまとめて紹介する形で2台を用意しました。これら4名の作品は、メインスクリーンでもご紹介しました。さらに、3台目のiPadでは昨年参加された作家さんの作品をまとめて紹介し、テレビ右側に縦に2台配置したiPadでは、私自身の作品を紹介しました。

As in the previous year, I offered 8×10-inch prints for sale at $10 each, and I was happy to see five pieces purchased. Some visitors asked about the quality of the paper and printing ink, which made me realize the need to prepare clear explanations so that buyers can trust the quality of the prints at a glance.

また、昨年同様に 8×10インチサイズのプリントを1枚10ドルで販売しましたが、嬉しいことに5点お買い上げいただきました。お客様の中には、紙質やプリントインクのクオリティについて質問される場面もありましたので、今後は購入者がプリントの品質に信頼を持てるよう、ひと目で分かる説明書きを用意する必要があると感じました。

What stood out to me most in this exhibition was how those who stopped by seemed deeply engaged in reading the messages. In the case of the Hardanger embroidery, several visitors with Norwegian ancestry came forward to share their connections.
Including both new and previous works, I had prepared about 100 prints in total. It was striking to see visitors take their time, carefully searching for the one that spoke to them.

今回の展示で特に印象に残ったのは、足を止めてくださった方々が皆、とても熱心にメッセージを読んでいたことです。ハーダンガー刺繍については、ご先祖がノルウェー出身という数名の方からお声をかけていただきました。
また、昨年のものも含めて合計約100枚のプリントを用意していたのですが、時間をかけてじっくりとお気に入りを探している姿がとても印象的でした。

Looking back at the pieces that were purchased, they seemed to be those in which the buyers felt a personal connection, or works that carried a message with a touch of shadow within the theme of “Peace,” or those infused with a wish for hope. It felt as though people were especially drawn to works where the visual conveyed a deeper message. For me, it suggested that recent uncertainties in the world, along with a yearning for emotional grounding, may be what leads people to seek out such works.

購入いただいた作品について振り返ると、ご自身と作品との間に何らかのつながりを感じられたもの、あるいは「Peace」というテーマの中に影の部分を含んだメッセージ性を持つもの、希望への願いが込められているもの――そうしたビジュアルからメッセージが伝わる作品が好まれているように思いました。私自身は、それはここ最近の世の中に対する不安や、心の拠り所を求める気持ちが、そうした作品を選ばせるのかもしれないと感じさせられました。

There are also a few points of reflection or things that gave me pause. First, my booth introduces Japanese culture while layering the theme of “Peace” on top of it. After this second year, I began to wonder if the message might not always come across as clearly as I intend.
Since our booth is part of the cultural exchange section of the art fair, I also feel that if we participate again for a third year, what is expected of us may grow into something larger—though I cannot yet say exactly what that might be.

反省点、あるいは少し気になった点もいくつかあります。まず第一に、私のブースは「日本」という文化的背景を基盤に「平和」というキーワードを重ねて紹介しているのですが、そのメッセージがやや伝わりにくい部分があるのかもしれない、と2年目を終えて感じはじめました。
また、このアートフェアでは文化交流ブースの一角をいただいていることもあり、もし来年3年目の参加となると、私たちに求められる役割は（まだ具体的にはわかりませんが）もう少し大きなものへと広がっていくのかもしれません。

On the positive side, I believe our booth is appreciated for boldly presenting digital works in an outdoor tent setting, as well as for opening a path toward international exchange through the theme of “Peace.” For the organizers, these elements bring a sense of hope, offering a more contemporary approach compared to the otherwise analog-centered art fair. In doing so, our presence contributes to engaging the audience while also helping to balance the overall composition of Arts on Terry.

ポジティブに受け止められている点としては、屋外のテントでありながら果敢にデジタル展示に取り組んでいること、そして「平和」というキーワードを通じて国際交流への道が開かれていくというシナリオです。これは、主催者の方々にとって希望を感じられる要素であり、アナログ中心の従来のアートフェアと比べても、より現代的なアプローチで観客を楽しませ、Arts on Terry 全体の構成バランスを取るうえで一役買っているのではないかと思います。

With all this in mind, as for me, if I have the opportunity to be invited again by the Patchogue Arts Council next year, I would very much like to take on the challenge of participating.
I also encourage all of you reading this newsletter to take some time in your daily life to think about what images or ideas come to mind when you consider the Peace Cards or the theme of “Peace,” and to try expressing them in your own way.

前回のレターから1ヶ月、ご無沙汰しております。
私は中之条ビエンナーレ2025での制作を終え、8月20日に日本から米国へ戻りました。翌日から大学勤務が始まり、しばらくは時差ぼけとの戦いの日々でした。先日、次男をボストンの大学寮へ送り届けた際のロングドライブのおかげで、ようやく体内時間も整ってきたところです。

Some of you may have already noticed, but I have been announcing the Piece Cards for a Piece of Peace through X and Instagram. Yes—that’s right, this year again I’ve been given the opportunity to set up a booth at Arts On Terry, a four-hour-only event organized by the Patchogue Arts Council in the town of Patchogue, Long Island.

すでにお気づきの方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、a Piece of Peaceのピースカードについては、XやInstagramを通してご案内をしています。そうです、今年もロングアイランドのパチョーグという街で、Patchogue Arts Council主催の「Arts On Terry」という4時間限定イベントにブースを設ける機会をいただきました。

This time, since our booth was well received last year, there is even a possibility that our exhibition space will be expanded. I also mentioned this on X Spaces. However, until just yesterday, September 1st, I was still considering how best to showcase your works in addition to the Piece Card project, so my announcement has been delayed.

今回は、昨年のブースが好評だったことから、展示スペースを少し拡大していただけるかもしれないというお話もあり、そのことについてはXのスペースでもお伝えしました。ただ、昨日(9月1日)まではピースカード以外にどのように皆さんの作品を紹介できるか思案しており、ご案内が遅れてしまいました。

From late August to early September, as college students return to campus, many stores are running “Back to School” sales. In one of those ads, I found a reasonably priced 32-inch TV monitor. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, I decided to go ahead and purchase it yesterday. I plan to use this monitor to showcase your digital works on a larger screen this time.

8月末から9月初めにかけては、大学生などがキャンパスへ戻る時期で、街では「バック・トゥ・スクール」セールが行われています。その広告の中で、比較的手頃な価格の32インチのテレビモニターを見つけ、この機会を逃すまいと、昨日思い切って購入しました。今回はそのテレビを活用し、少し大きめのモニターで皆さんのデジタル作品をご紹介できればと考えています。

However, this year’s event will be held a week earlier—on September 14—so there is hardly any preparation time left. Therefore, in this newsletter, I would like to explain how to apply to participate in my booth.

ただし、今年のイベントは例年より一週間早まり、9月14日に開催されることになりました。そのため、準備期間がほとんど残されていません。そこで、今回のニュースレターでは、私のブースへの参加申込み方法についてご案内いたします。

昨年参加してくださった方は要領をご存じかと思いますが、説明の内容が一部変更になっています。ご応募の際は、必ずリンク先にある詳細をご確認のうえ、お申込みください。

This will be my second time hosting a booth at the open-air market. I am still figuring things out, and since I have fewer hands to help this year, I plan to keep the setup a bit simpler. The works I am calling for will be centered on the theme of Peace. Just like last year, I believe that if we all keep this theme in mind, the collected works will naturally create a sense of unity.

今回の展示は、私にとって2回目の青空市ブースとなります。まだまだ手探りの部分が多く、しかも今年は人手が足りないため、展示方法を少しシンプルにしようと考えています。応募いただく作品は「平和」をテーマに募集します。昨年同様、このテーマを意識した作品が集まれば、自然と統一感が生まれるはずです。

Today’s world feels more chaotic than at any point in recent decades. Too often, people clash rather than seek to understand one another. For that reason, I hope to create a booth where visitors might smile, pause to take a deep breath, and reflect—experiencing a range of emotions and meanings. Of course, some preparation costs are unavoidable, so I would like to make this possible by collecting a modest participation fee.

今の世の中は、ここ数十年の中で最も混沌としていて、互いを理解し合うよりも対立する場面が多いように感じます。だからこそ私は、訪れた人が思わず笑みを浮かべたり、あるいは一度深呼吸して考えさせられたりするような、さまざまな意味を感じられるブースをつくりたいと願っています。ただし、準備にはどうしても多少の経費がかかるため、参加費を募りながら実現したいと思っています。

The booth will be part of the main tent at the venue. It will be a U-shaped space with three walls, each about 3 meters wide and 1.8 meters high. Since it is a tent, the walls will be made of metal grid panels.

ブースは、大きなテントのメイン会場内に設けられる一つで、基本的には横3メートル・高さ1.8メートルの壁3枚でコの字型に囲まれた空間です。テントのため、壁素材は金属のグリッド状のパネルが用意されます。

The first wall will feature Japanese artists. Using the newly purchased 32-inch TV or an iPad, I will present digital works—including, this year, short video pieces of up to one minute. The participation fee for digital display starts at $12. On the table beneath the screen, I will provide a binder containing one-page profiles submitted by each artist. Artists who wish to sell reproduction prints of their works can do so; please check the details during the application process. Proceeds will be returned to the artist after deducting a small handling fee.

1つ目の壁には、日本の作家さんを紹介します。新しく用意した32インチのテレビ、またはiPadを使ってデジタル作品を展示します。今回は1分以内の動画作品も受け付けます。デジタル展示の参加費は12ドルからです。テレビやiPadの下に置くテーブルの上には、各作家が提出したプロフィール1ページをバインダーにまとめて紹介します。また、展示作品の複製プリントの販売を希望される方は、申込時に詳細をご確認ください。売上は手数料を差し引いた上で作家にお返しします。

The second wall will showcase Peace Cards—mail art created and sent with wishes for peace. This is a sister event to the Peace Card Exhibition currently being held in Tokyo and Yamanashi in Japan. Participation is free. Because this announcement is a little late, mailing from abroad may not reach the U.S. in time for this year’s event. Still, since I plan to continue the project next year, I encourage you to send your card by airmail, anyway. The display method will be simple: the cards will be clipped onto strings attached to the wall, so visitors can touch them and read the messages on both sides.

2つ目の壁には、「ピースカード」の展示を行います。これは「平和の願い」を込めて送っていただくメールアートのフォーマットを利用したもので、現在は東京や山梨でもピースカード展として受付が始まっており、その姉妹イベントという位置づけになります。参加費は無料です。告知が遅れてしまったため、このレターを読んでから米国外から米国に郵送すると今年のイベントに間に合わない可能性があります。ただ、来年以降も継続して参加する予定ですので、エアメールで送っていただければ幸いです。展示方法は、届いたカードを壁に張った紐にクリップで吊るし、来場者が手に取って表裏のメッセージを読めるようにします。

The third wall will highlight works by artists active locally—mostly close colleagues and friends of mine.

3つ目の壁には、現地で活動する作家の作品を展示します。とはいえ、主に私の身近な仲間の作品になると思います。

About Arts on Terry (AOT) について

Arts on Terry (AOT) is an annual contemporary art fair organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island (MoCA L.I.). It takes place on Terry Street, the official arts district of the town of Patchogue, and welcomes visitors of all ages.

The event will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Though only four hours long, it will feature more than 300 artists presenting works that represent their communities through 17+ pop-up galleries, 25+ individual booths, and 12+ street artists.

Arts on Terry (AOT)は、ロングアイランド現代美術館（MoCA L.I.）が主催する、あらゆる年齢層を対象とした毎年恒例の現代アートフェアで、パッチョーグ町の公式アート地区であるテリー通りで開催されます。

開催日時は 2025年9月14日(日)午後1時から午後5時まで。わずか4時間のイベントですが、300人以上のアーティストが参加し、それぞれのコミュニティを代表する作品が、17以上のポップアップギャラリー、25以上の個別ブース、そして12組以上のストリートアーティストによって展示されます。

In 2025, even more organizations and artists will join, offering not only exhibitions but also demonstrations, live painting, family-friendly activities, live music, poetry readings, and performances—making it a day-long celebration of creativity.

2025年にはさらに多くの団体やアーティストが参加し、アート作品の展示に加え、デモンストレーション、ライブペインティング、家族向けアクティビティ、ライブ音楽、詩の朗読、パフォーマンスなど、一日を通して楽しめるイベントになる予定です。

For participants, this is an opportunity to share your work with a broad audience. Through AOT’s official website and social media promotion, even remote participation allows your work to reach many people. The event is also a valuable chance to gain new inspiration and present your art. Even if you cannot attend in person, it’s an excellent opportunity to share your work and support your ongoing practice—so we encourage you to apply!

参加者の皆さんの作品は、幅広い観客に見てもらえるだけでなく、AOTの公式サイトやSNSを通したプロモーションにより、リモート参加であっても多くの人に届けることができます。このイベントは新しいインスピレーションを得たり、自分の作品を発表する貴重な機会でもあります。直接会場に来られない方にとっても、作品を広め、今後の活動に役立てる絶好のチャンスとなりますので、ぜひご応募ください。

   Regarding the selection recommendation for Night Vision in October, which I mentioned during the X Space on September 2: this year’s Night Vision is calling for works inspired by dreams, the unconscious, and surreal.
   Therefore, please note that works created under the “Peace” theme will not fit this year’s concept and will not be included in the Night Vision exhibition.

   
   9月2日のXスペースでお伝えした10月に催されるNight Visionへの選考推薦ですが、今年のNight Visionは、夢、無意識、シュールレアリズムにインスパイアされた作品を募集しています。そのため「Peace」をテーマにした作品は今回の趣旨に合わないので、Night Visionには含まれないことをご理解ください。
   

So, how did that sound to you? I often hear, "I'd like to participate, but I'm not really sure what peace means." Perhaps the reason peace seems unclear is because you live in an environment where you don't have to consciously think about it. If you were to express peace in such an environment, it might seem difficult. But how about trying this approach? Draw a picture of a moment from your everyday life. When that simple, ordinary scene reaches someone on the other side of the world, it could become a small piece of peace, conveying a gentle wish for tranquility.

さて、いかがでしたでしょうか？ 「参加したい気持ちはあるけれど、平和ってよくわからない」という声をよくいただきます。平和を意識しなくてもよい環境にいるからこそ、平和について考える機会が少ないのかもしれません。そのような環境で平和を表現するのは難しいですよね。そこで、こんなアプローチを提案します。普段の生活の一コマを絵に描いてみてください。その何気ない日常が、地球の裏側の誰かに届いた時、それが平和のひとひらとして、安らかな願いを伝えるきっかけになるかもしれません。

Peace Card submissions are also being accepted at the Philia Museum and Gallery House MAYA2 (Tokyo exhibition). Even if your work doesn’t make it to the Long Island showcase in time, you can always send your “message of peace.” For details on the events in Japan, please check the link provided.
