These types of pendants were booming during the World Cup, becoming a way for jewelry brands to easily create nationalist accessories that scream, “I’m proud of my country.” Now, because of the earthquake in Colombia, another brand shared a piece to collect money for a foundation, so I brought this compilation out to make it part.

After 5 years on Substack, Latin Zine is entering a new era as an editorial world and ongoing publication!

Which means, all the stories I write, the brands and things I discover, and the editorial experiments I share here are all part of a world I’m building: one that will eventually make it into an annual print publication in 2027.

Because in a fleeting social media world, I keep thinking so much about archives. About things you can treasure, keep and return to. And one of my favorite things in the world is creating dynamic publications: things you can touch, play with, explore and feel inspired by when you see them.

Having said that, I would love for you to be part of Latin Zine’s world! 🌎

I’ve realized that while working on Latin Zine stories, I naturally save and collect things constantly: brands, objects, clothes and little things that catch my eye. This is a big part of my weekly creative routine. But many of them stay in my folders while I wait for the “right” newsletter or the right moment to share them.

As a brand I am always looking out for, because its whole universe is so inspiring, there was one particular piece that made me want to draw it and even create a little paper experiment mock-up with it. I just loved the idea of having a little stamp sheet, one that you could tear apart with your hands.

But honestly, I am loving everything about the Minena bralette, to the point that I don’t even know which color is prettier.

As she explained how the brand’s work is structured in an ethical way for everyone involved in the production of its luxury hand-embroidered pieces, she also shared her aim of eventually turning it into a methodology they could register.

“If I can show that our theory of change works, and document the way we work, the model can scale, because then you have a proven method,” Laura concludes.

At that point, I had just begun developing the brand's 10th-anniversary printed publication and editorial campaign. For the book, we wanted to create a timeline of Amor & Rosas' evolution while documenting the artisanal work behind the brand.

Interestingly, although I had known about Amor & Rosas for years—and had even met Laura before—I never expected to gain such a deep understanding of the work happening behind the scenes.

Over the course of one week, we travelled to three different cities to produce the campaign images while diving into the brand’s story and documenting its work with women artisans, with whom it has collaborated for the past ten years.

San Nicolás, Hidalgo

Our first stop was San Nicolás, in Hidalgo, a town around three to four hours from Mexico City where people exclusively speak Otomí. We were welcomed by María del Carmen, a 58-year-old Master Artisan who has worked with Laura for the past decade.

San Nicolás is the birthplace of the famous Tenango embroidery. However, María del Carmen explained that while the town is part of the municipality of Tenango de Doria, the name does not correspond to the town where the embroidery actually originated. Its name in Otomí is Rëdi jätzi, which means embroidery and cloth.

This type of embroidery has been widely plagiarized, not only by nearby towns and other states in Mexico, but also by large companies such as Kimberly-Clark, which used the design on its Kleenex packaging in 2023. With the help of two lawyers from Mexico City, the town was able to sue the company and receive compensation.

I have to admit San Nicolás is quite remote. The nearest city is around two hours away, and the trip can be a little difficult because of the curvy roads, which might leave anyone a little dizzy. At the end of the visit, we also had the chance to browse María del Carmen’s store inside her home. One thing I loved were the little embroidered rings. Some of the girls from the Amor & Rosas team bought jackets, while I picked up a few small things for my home and a tiny ring for my pinky.

Chiapas

One day after our trip to Hidalgo, we were ready for another adventure, this time with five of us: Laura (founder of Amor & Rosas), Ana (Production and Design Manager), Marielle (part of the social media and creative team), Lorena (photographer), and me.

Chiapas felt like a dream. Apparently, the airport had recently been renovated, and it was full of greenery and screens showcasing all the natural places you can visit in the state. After landing in Tuxtla, Laura rented a car, and we proceeded to drive to San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Upon arriving and settling into our hotel, we met Lety and Marisol for breakfast. The sisters, who specialize in cross-stitch embroidery, had travelled from Sitalá, a town three hours away. Their first language is Tzeltal, another language spoken in the region. They both work alongside their mother, Master Artisan Antonia, who couldn’t be there. Lety, the youngest, has taken on a leading role and founded a collective called Las Rosas.

Their outfits were marvellous. Some pieces sparkled because they had sewn sequins onto them by tying tiny knots, and they paired their skirts with belts made in Guatemala. Since the country is so close, Laura explained that Guatemalan artisans regularly cross into Chiapas to sell their work, and it was interesting to see this mix of textiles.

Nachig

On the same day, right after breakfast, we arrived in Nachig, a town just before Zinacantán, a municipality known for its embroidered flowers.

Laura stopped the car in front of a taquería and called out Rosa’s name (who also likes to be called Rose) to see if she was there. Rose came out carrying her one-year-old son in her arms, who was holding four small yellow balloons.

Rose got in the car so we could drive to her house. I took her bag, and we all squeezed into the back of the rented Nissan Versa.

As soon as we got to her home, we carefully observed the treadle zigzag sewing machine she had in the room, as well as a blouse hanging nearby and other textile pieces her mother had woven on a backstrap loom.

Immediately, she brought out chairs for us to sit on and very quickly proceeded to make tortillas. I asked, "Can I watch?" Marielle, Lorena and I sat down in front of her as we chatted about cooking (and our lack of cooking skills), while she added water to the masa, rolled it into small balls, and placed them in a small purple bucket. Then she grabbed a wooden tortilla press to flatten them. Very skillfully, she made around 25 tortillas for lunch.

The hen soup was boiling, and Rose brought out the table. We helped her arrange the chairs so we could all sit down. The soup—which I will definitely try to make again—was prepared with epazote and pepper (which is why it had a bit of a kick), but Rose explained that she didn't add any vegetables because they take away from the flavour. She also placed a bowl of red rice in the middle of the table so we could add it to the soup. With the tortillas and fresh horchata, we all ate together. Just as we were finishing, she announced that she had also prepared dulce de chilacayote, and while we were enjoying it, her husband arrived. We were then offered a sip of Pox (Posh), a traditional Chiapanecan spirit distilled from corn.

Right after lunch, Lorena and I hung the embroidered floral backdrop we had been using for all the portraits we were taking for the campaign and the book. Rose had made it herself on the sewing machine, which had taken her around 17 hours. First, we took her portrait, and later Lucy's, Rose's sister, who had just arrived and also helps with the embroidery. Lucy had long black braided hair and was wearing a purple cape—which I loved—with a long grey sleeve underneath.

When we returned to the house, we found that the space had been transformed into a little working studio. Rose was avidly sewing Amor & Rosas pieces on the treadle sewing machine placed within a large wooden embroidery hoop; Marielle was drawing, and Laura was checking which thread colours best suited the embroidery.

The team was also taking advantage of this trip to prepare the 2027 sample collection and needed to finish drawing directly onto the textiles for the embroidery. As the light began to fade, I offered to help draw flowers on the samples. I've drawn pretty much my whole life, and I worked as a fashion illustrator for several years, so it was actually a lot of fun to return to drawing flowers on the dresses. I especially enjoyed how Laura gave me the freedom to decide where they would be placed.

In the middle of the creative process, I suggested adding a velvet flower, inspired by one I had recently seen in my parents' garden; one traditionally associated with Día de Muertos. I traced it onto the textile with a white gel pen and other special heat-erasable pens. The moment Rose saw it, I thought she was going to kill me—because it looked a little strange at first, but it turned out beautifully.

It was already getting late, and Mexico was playing Korea at 7 p.m. We thought we would still have time to watch the match on the big screen in the centre of San Cristóbal, so we tried to finish everything as quickly as possible.

Since I had told Lucy how much I loved her cape, Rose brought out a beautiful blue one from the closet for me to buy. Soon after, we got back in the car and drove back. Before dinner, Laura took us all to a bakery and told us each to grab a tray and pick ten pieces of bread so we could take them to the group of artisans we were visiting the following day.

The day ended with tacos, and even though we couldn't watch the whole match, we at least caught the last twenty minutes.

Chenalhó

We rose early to leave for Chenalhó at 7 a.m., a town just beyond Chamula, where a group of 26 women called Los Girasoles, coordinated by master artisan Angélica María, who is 60 years old, and her daughters Carolina and Claudia, had gathered and were expecting us. As soon as we arrived, Laura, Ana and Marielle hurried into the house, where everyone was already waiting.

Lorena and I quickly stopped at a small shop to buy some flowers for the photographs before walking into the house. By the time we got there, everyone was already sitting down, eating the bread we had brought and drinking café de olla. Laura was holding Claudia's baby and playing with him. I was starving, so I went into the kitchen to grab a piece of bread, only to find that the ladies had left all the diet bread on the board just for me! I made a joke about it, and we all laughed. I still grabbed a piece to eat with the coffee, which was delicious.

We all sat down, chatted with the people around us and got to know the women. Some spoke mostly Tzotzil, so others translated the conversation for us. Some were family, some were neighbours, and others had walked for one or two hours from nearby towns to get there. For many of the women, the embroidery they create for Amor & Rosas represents a supplementary source of income, alongside their other daily responsibilities.

After breakfast, the Amor & Rosas team got to work, as they also needed to leave the new samples assigned to this group. Suddenly, I heard Laura say out loud, "We're going to teach you how to draw because we can't depend on a man to do it!" They placed the samples on a table, and Laura asked for two volunteers who wanted to learn.

Laura quickly explained to me that the only person who draws the embroidery patterns in the community is the town's sign painter, so he has a lot of work and sometimes can't come to trace the pieces. As a result, the work gets delayed.

At the same time, the Amor & Rosas team had brought a Polaroid camera with them, and we handed it to the women so they could take pictures of themselves to keep as a remembrance. Meanwhile, Lorena and I went upstairs to the terrace to hang the embroidered floral backdrop we had been using for the portraits, and we called the women in groups of four or five to photograph them.

When we came back downstairs, we found the sign painter sitting in the living room talking with Ana, Carolina and Laura, while Angélica María listened attentively.

Not long afterwards, they finished drawing the samples, selected the thread colours and distributed the work among the different artisans so they could begin embroidering right away. It was then that we watched Angélica María working on one of the pieces alongside Rosa, a sixteen-year-old who had only learned embroidery the year before.

I sat down next to Marielle to help with some drawings, and around midday we were offered tamales. They were made with roasted corn, something I had never tried before, and were served with chicken and red sauce. We were also offered low-fat tamales made with hoja santa and beans. They were so good that I asked if I could take one home for my mum to try, and Angélica María kindly gave me two to take with me.

Laura explained that she had originally met all the artisans in Chiapas through an NGO that no longer exists. The organisation had taught them how to measure the hours they spend on each piece and therefore calculate how much their work costs. It's a system that already works for them, so Amor & Rosas respects it.

After lunch, we went back upstairs to take a group photograph of Los Girasoles and the Amor & Rosas team. While they discussed matters related to the group and the brand, Lorena and I chatted with the children, who were teaching us Tzotzil. We asked them, "How do you say one, two, three? Flowers? Foot? Mountain?"

Earlier that day, Laura had asked whether I had ever taught drawing. I said yes. After they finished their meeting, she turned to the group and asked, "Who wants to learn how to draw?" Everyone raised their hand. Hopefully, I'll be back one day to teach a drawing class to the group.

We left around 2 p.m. and drove through the rain on our way back to San Cristóbal and then to the airport. The journey was filled with stories from Laura about how she began as an entrepreneur at a young age in Culiacán, Sinaloa—from selling pictures of Britney Spears that she printed at home so she could buy a coconut outside school for 10 pesos, to working weekends at a pharmacy, and later at a fashion mall in the United States.

Just as we were arriving at the airport, Marielle asked, "Laura, why did you call it Amor & Rosas?" A little exhausted, Laura replied, "Because love is the only virtue that can grow and bloom."

We arrived at the airport a slightly rushed and very tired, but patiently waited for our 9:36 p.m. flight back to Mexico City.

Since I started following the work of Ulises Mayorga through his namesake bag brand (and occasional clothing drops), I’ve always been excited to see what they showcase during Tijuana Design Week, as they consistently take the opportunity to do something unique.

This time, Mayorga ventured into a runway show featuring several clothing pieces, in addition to showcasing its bag collection. From knitwear to plaid faux leather skirts and Mayorga caps, to a patchwork top that was one of my favorites.

Even though the brand has been around since 2017, it still carries the air of an emerging label. However, this runway show only reinforced my feeling that Mayorga is one of the most interesting Mexican fashion brands to watch right now.

Last week I felt an urge: I didn’t want to draft ideas on Substack anymore. It had to be on paper.

I wanted to collect the things I see and the things that catch my eye, just like I used to do growing up, ripping pages from magazines and saving them inside a three-ring binder.

So I went to a stationery shop and picked up a binder, colored paper, pens, pencils… and just went with it.

Along with this, I also ordered a portable black-and-white thermal printer. I wanted a way to quickly print fragments, images, observations, ideas and save them.

Lately, I’ve been trying to shake off the pressure of making every newsletter feel overly polished. I want my research and observations to feel more tactile and alive.

The kitten heel

The only time I watched a bit of Euphoria, I regretted it. I’m not particularly into feeling anxious after watching a show. But because I kept seeing posts about the wedding outfits online, I went ahead and watched two episodes — and yes, instantly regretted it.

Still, one thing caught my eye: Maddy’s white kitten heels (see the file below).

I’m a sucker for this type of heel. So naturally, I was equally head over heels when I saw Maguire’s new drop. I know it’s not a Latin American brand, but I’ve adored it ever since I spent time in Montreal. The shoes I own from them are incredibly comfortable, and every time I wear them, I get compliments.

Also, Maguire’s most recent campaign features Mexican model Fernanda Álvarez, and from what I can tell, the images were also shot in Mexico.

Along the same lines, I had also been saving these new VACR shoes, which are some of my favorites at the moment (more pictures below).

As I have been researching Mexican fashion of the past decade for an upcoming print publication, I began thinking about how the beauty industry has also evolved and mimicked the trajectory of fashion, slowly building cultural identity.

Over a decade ago, just when we were surrounded by European beauty ideals and the Kylie Jenner nude lips and lip kits, there was something else brewing: make-up brands were taking Mexican heritage and making bold, bright and colorful products.

There was Pai Pai, founded in 2013, using Mexican folklore culture as a banner in their packaging and vibrant lips. They were a one-of-a-kind brand and it sure felt like a big contrast with other international make-up lines at the time. I even remember whilst working at Vogue Mexico’s office, how much I loved receiving the new collection as a gift for the team.

And it’s becoming more and more evident as younger generations are carrying the way through a system that has been built on older values, perceptions, and processes.

There are figures like María Isas, born in Guadalajara but based in Mexico City, who is currently one of the greatest designers of her generation. ‘El Moro’ was full, there were at least 10 other people in the queue, and in a very systematic way, you ordered the churro, paid, and then moved over to the second line to get your food.

I got a churro with dulce de leche (although sadly it wasn’t filled, it was a dip), and a thick Spanish hot chocolate.

As I saw people taking pictures with their churros, I proceeded to eat mine.

Somewhere in between this experience, I realized I completely missed when churros started trending in the food world – and honestly, I have to admit it’s a weird feeling when something so common for you suddenly becomes a social media sensation.

While H&M had already launched a collection with Mexican designer Lorena Saravia just a few months prior, it is now Inditex taking its turn, looking at one of its most important markets in the world.

Marking their first collaboration with a Mexican designer, a newly launched Montserrat Messeguer for Inditex’s Pull&Bear, inspired by her Northern-style brand.

Then there is, of course, Vatísimo, the special Willy Chavarria collaboration with Zara, inspired by telenovelas. As Chavarria explains to Hypebeast:
