Josh Allen and the starting offense attacked downfield, with Khalil Shakir and DJ Moore making an immediate impact. Of all the places for chicken fingers & tenders recommended to me over the past few months, Tully’s Good Times may be the most polarizing. It seems there’s no in between with the audience----people either love the place or think it’s dramatically overrated.

I went there with a small group of friends in part out of curiosity and honestly, also so people would shut up about suggesting it every time I asked where I should try next.

I obviously didn’t know if I’d like the food but was certain a place like this represents the divide---or controversy if you will when it comes to evaluating chicken fingers/tenders. Some (many) don’t think fingers and tenders should be lumped into the same category. To be fair, those saying it have a good point but at the end of the day, I don’t give a shit about that noise. I’m consolidating them together, so deal with it.

We went to the location on (1449) French Road in Depew. Here’s my honest thoughts about a plate that pretty much turned out opposite of what I expected.

PROS

· Tenders were served fresh and handcrafted—not frozen

· Almost every bite had crisp on the outside and delicious tenderness inside. Seriously, I was borderline blown away.

· A buddy dining with us had a side cup of some type of Asian sauce I tried—and surprisingly very much enjoyed.

· Good fries!

CONS

· Buffalo sauce was very bland.

· The much-heralded honey mustard sauce talked up from many others wasn’t much better.

· Fries were pretty good but skimpy on the quantity.

PRICE

· $18.05 for the “Buffalo Tender Dinner” which included the tenders, fries and coleslaw (which I declined). Including my Diet Coke the bill was around $22.50. Not unreasonable but definitely on the higher end in comparison to others.

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

· Can’t explain why but Tully’s felt like the perfect place to film a few scenes from The Office. Like, I was expecting to see Michael and Jan having a business lunch meeting with someone a few tables over.

· To be clear, that’s not a diss towards the place whatsoever, the décor and vibes were cool.

· Besides the Cheektowaga/Depew spot we visited there’s also locations in Amherst and Williamsville.

· You can also order online via apps such as DoorDash & GrubHub if you want Tully’s but don’t want to venture out of your house.

· Wings, smothered chicken, seafood combo, fish fry haddock dinner and California fish tacos are among other things prominent on their menu.

· Really (really) solid drink prices including plenty of drink specials. That’s the good news—the bad news is sources tell me the bartenders are extremely quick to cut patrons off. This apparently is a bar to enjoy a drink or two, not get your buzz on.

CONCLUSION/SCORE

· They not only claim but literally advertise on their menu and such that they have “The Best Chicken Tenders on Earth.” Let’s pump the brakes on that, guys.

· Here’s what surprised me the most---I fully expected to not be crazy about the tenders but enjoy delicious sauce to make up for it. It’s actually the opposite here---I wasn’t blown away by the sauce at all but the tenders were almost shockingly good.

· I think the moniker “Tully’s Great Food & Good Times” actually fits here. Minus the just “ehh” Buffalo and Honey Mustard sauces (in my opinion of course), Tully’s deserves all the shine it gets.

· All in all, a very enjoyable eating experience and if their sauces were a bit more adventurous, they’d flirt with elite territory.

· Score: 7.9 out of 10

When it comes to wings Belt Line Brewery (545 Swan Street) is about as good as it gets. Like, literally they’re currently in my wings Mt. Rushmore tier alongside Nine Eleven Tavern, Bar Bill and Adolf’s.

So color me optimistic when I heard they also served chicken fingers, which were off their menu for a while but back on now. I went there on a Sunday afternoon careful to not compare their fingers versus the wings because doing do was setting up disappointment. By the way, if you’ve never had their 716 or All Dressed wings you’re so missing out.

But I did have expectations of enjoying some fingers at one of my favorite eat/drink and chill spots in Buffalo (minus the parking). So, did I enjoy?

PROS

· Traditional 716 sauce (both medium or hot) are both elite

· Chicken tasted great

· If you love your fingers with plenty of breading and crunch to them, these are right up your alley

· Three fingers and fries were more than enough to be full

· Fries were fantastic---among the best I’ve had at any bar/restaurant.

· I’m not a bleu cheese guy but the wife said it’s excellent.

CONS

· A bit chintzy on the amount of bleu cheese—just one small cup with the plate

· If you DON’T want your fingers with plenty of crunch to them, these won’t be for you.

· Parking straight up sucks.

PRICE

· $16.00 for (three sizable) fingers and fries. Incredibly reasonable.

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

· You order your food at the bar, sit down and they’ll eventually bring it to you---no need for a separate server.

· Good wing special on Wednesdays (20 wings & 2 Belt Line Beers for $30) and also have Burger Night on Tuesdays (2 Burgers & Fries for $30)

· Adequate number of tables (13) for sit down dining.

· It’s on the corner of Hamburg and Swan and if you don’t get lucky (I actually did) you may potentially park and have a small hike to the bar.

CONCLUSION/SCORE

· Really not much to love. The biggest problem I have with their fingers/fries isn’t the product itself but that their wings are so delicious, which makes it hard to go to Belt Line and not get them.

· Fortunately I was with my wife who wanted wings, so I got to have a few of her hot lemon pepper wings, which for the record were incredible.

· The 716 sauce is anything but the mailed in standard of Frank’s and butter ratio. 100% homemade and elite. So is the “All Dressed” though I didn’t have that flavor today.

· I really think these fingers were excellent—that said I found them very specific, so if you don’t love heavier breading and extra crunch, you may not love these.

· Score: 8.0 of out 10—among the better finger/tender spots I’ve tried early on but they’re very specific. If you like crunchier breaded fingers these will be elite, if you don’t I’m not sure you’ll love em. This place was already good enough to consider the rare “destination spot” for wings and if you go with someone else or others, getting fingers along with them is certainly a smart play.

Found myself heading to The Ridge(555 Orchard Park Avenue) in West Seneca to try their chicken fingers on Saturday night for a few reasons: I was hungry, wanted to try fingers for the first time and because it’s close to home. Like, literally five minutes from my house.

I’ve frequented it several times before, almost always to meet up with friends for drinks. Without a question it’s a (very) cool spot to hang at with plenty of room to move around.

I’ve also eaten there a handful of times with what I’ll (generously) say is mixed results. I found their burgers are fine and wings are mediocre. Since I’m committed to this chicken fingers for now, I figured this would be the perfect time to try them. Did I regret it? Spoiler alert---I sure did. Read on to learn why.

PROS

· The fries were perfectly fine.

· Portion size of the fingers and fries is customer friendly.

CONS

· No nice way to say it---the fingers tasted terrible. Hard as rock within minutes of getting them. Didn’t even come close to finishing my plate and not because I lacked the hunger.

· Sauce was bland as can be—and if this was their “hot” I can’t image how boring the medium is.

· Fingers and fries were dark, suggesting to me their oil needs to be changed.

PRICE

· $18.00 for five fingers with fries. Definitely on the pricier side compared to others though in fairness to them, they were plentiful in size. $3.50 for a fountain soda is pretty standard.

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

· Big fan of this place as a whole. Got a full bar in the front with a large patio outside. Behind the bar is a restaurant area and the back features a smallish brewery space with plenty of crafts on tap and decent seating.

· Very satisfied with the service.

· They had a band playing outside and the place was PACKED in the back for it. Ya love to see it.

CONCLUSION/SCORE

· I can’t emphasize this enough—there’s a TON to enjoy about The Ridge and I’ll also add the ability to socialize in a busy environment without a jukebox literally blaring over you.

· The menu is pretty extensive. Among items included are wraps, chicken quesadilla, salads, pizza, salmon and tons of other things.

· But the chicken fingers aren’t it. Truthfully, they’re among the worst I’ve had anywhere since starting this series. Again, a lot to love about The Ridge but I’d avoid the chicken fingers at all costs. Anything else on the menu has to be an upgrade by default.

· Score: 1.9 out of 10.

It’s certainly cool for fans to watch and a great way for the media to get back to grinding but let’s keep things in perspective here----NFL training camp and by extension the preseason doesn’t end up meaning very much.

Truth is for the Buffalo Bills and 31 other teams, by the time the team takes the field in late July for training camp, much of the roster and depth chart has already been decided. NFL teams already had months to evaluate their roster not to mention OTAs and minicamp.

Sure, there’s a legitimate positional battle or two each year and a smattering of guys on the bubble that can go either way, but we mostly already know what this 53-man roster will look like for Week one in Houston—at least Brandon Beane does.

Preseason starts Saturday for Buffalo at home against Carolina and for most players, the only thing that matters over the next three weeks is staying healthy. Literally that’s it.

Just don’t tell that to these six players.

For them (and a small handful of others not mentioned) the next few weeks may as well be the AFC playoffs. A lot’s on the line and here’s a look why for each:

Keonta Jenkins: Found it notable each camp practice that it was Jenkins, not Joe Andreessen out with the second unit alongside Kaleb Elarms-Orr. In fact, when Dorian Williams and Terrell Bernard were both eased back into activities early, Jenkins ran with the first team. That said, it’s equally notable that on the team’s first official depth chart Andreessen’s ahead of Jenkins.

I see the preseason as opportunity for Jenkins to showcase his improvement from year one to two, whereas conversely, we already know what Andreesen is. Of course, both may ultimately make the team but it’s common for teams running this style of defense to keep just four off ball linebackers to allow for an extra defender at edge or along the line. How Jenkins looks both on defense and special teams these next few weeks weigh pivotal to his active roster chances.

Kani Walker: The undrafted free agent out of Arkansas missed practice early this week so his status for Saturday may be up in the air. Let’s hope not, because Walker had an exciting training camp that seemingly came out of nowhere. In my mind he’s clearly ahead of seventh-round pick Toriano Pride Jr. in the fourth boundary cornerback race and if Walker continues to impress, Buffalo may not feel the need to search outside for veteran depth insurance. Walker’s looked like a prospect worth keeping so far.

Jalon Kilgore: If nothing else, the fifth-round rookie safety flashed enough at training camp to get fans enthusiastic as his physicality and playmaking abilities were on display, including a highlight reel diving interception off Shane Buechele the first week of camp. Kilgore’s spot on the roster is already secure, but a strong preseason showing could give Brandon Beane enough confidence to move off one of Damar Hamlin or Geno Stone and keep just four safeties.

Austin Corbett: The guard competition with Alec Anderson has been evenly split down the middle, literally. They took turns each day of camp getting initial first team offense run and both saw plenty of reps each practice. Neither have been particularly impressive to me to be honest, but I think it’s advantage Anderson as things stand. Corbett will make this team regardless but if he wants to be to the directly left of Josh Allen in Houston come Week one, he has to start stepping up with better performances.

Tylan Grable: From the moment the ink dried on Ryan Van Demark’s signed offer sheet with Minnesota that Buffalo didn’t match, I penciled in Grable as Van Demark’s swing tackle replacement. However, I thought Grable looked mediocre early in camp while fourth-round rookie Jude Bowry garnered plenty of praise with his play. To Grable’s credit I think he improved as camp went on and we now have ourselves a good ole’ fashioned preseason battle between Grable and Bowry. Grable’s versatility keeps him on the roster but if he loses out on the swing tackle gig, he may find himself a healthy gameday inactive.

Shane Buechele: To put it mildly, Kyle Allen has been less than impressive this summer and at this point of his career, is there really room for improvement? Buechele hasn’t exactly been Ryan Fitzpatrick or even Mitch Trubisky for that matter, but he’s had moments that make you think he’s QB2 material. I think Buechele has a real chance to solidify himself as Josh’s backup this year and if he doesn’t take advantage, Beane may look elsewhere post roster cuts. I’m completely out on (Kyle) Allen, not to mention you could easily get him back on the practice squad. These next three weeks are big for Buechele
