I bought it on a resale platform. When it arrived, the finish was uneven, the stitching wandered, and the whole object sat in my hand with a looseness I don’t associate with three thousand dollars. I have cut open hundreds of bags. I know what a fake feels like. This felt like a fake.

It wasn’t. After months of chasing details — hardware, stamping, lining, construction — the bag came back authentic. And when I went to the people who authenticate these things for a living, they weren’t surprised. This model, they told me, is consistently inconsistent. The variation is the norm.

That year cost me more time than the bag was worth. But it gave me the clearest example I’ve ever held of something the industry has spent three years failing to explain to itself.

The number the industry already has

Bain and Altagamma track this market for the people who run it. Their finding: the luxury consumer base fell from roughly 400 million people in 2022 to around 340 million in 2025. Sixty million customers, gone in three years. Active shoppers dropped from about 60% of the addressable base to somewhere between 40 and 45%.

And the reason Bain gives is not a recession, a trend cycle, or a marketing problem.

It’s pricing that consumers perceive as prohibitive and can’t reconcile with quality.

Read that again, because it’s a remarkable sentence to find in an industry report. The world’s most-cited luxury consultancy told its clients that people walked away because the price stopped making sense against what was in the box.

That’s the correct diagnosis. But it’s stated in the language of a survey, and it leaves out the part that actually explains it — the mechanism. What is it, specifically, that stopped adding up?

I can tell you, because I take these things apart for a living. And I can tell you where a good deal of that demand went, which is the part nobody in those reports seems willing to say out loud.

You are buying four things

Every bag delivers four separate things, priced separately, shown to you as one number.

Function. It holds your things and it closes. A low floor — a good canvas tote clears it for forty dollars.

Looks. Shape, proportion, colour, the way it reads across a room. Real value, entirely subjective. Nobody can tell you your taste is wrong.

Quality. The hide, the tannage, the edge finishing, the density of the stitch, the alloy in the hardware, whether the thing was assembled by someone given enough time. The only layer I can measure, and the reason I take bags apart.

Prestige. The logo. What the object says about you before you speak. The only layer with no material cost, and at the top of the market the largest line on the bill.

Here is the assumption almost everyone carries into a store: that these stack. That climbing the price ladder collects each layer on the way up.

For twenty years that assumption was safe, because quality was the one layer you couldn’t verify at the counter. Leather is opaque. Hardware is plated. Construction hides under a lining. You had to trust the price.

That era is over. And when a layer people had been paying for turns out not to be reliably there, you don’t get a scandal. You get sixty million people quietly making other arrangements.

Here’s where they went.

The first floor: looks, sold on their own

You know these brands even if you’ve never bought one. Bags that read, from three metres, as close cousins of the most photographed silhouettes of the moment. No logo, no pretence, a hundred to three hundred dollars. People call it dupe culture.

Understand what these are and aren’t. A counterfeit steals the name and lies about where it came from. These brands take the shape, price it openly, and put their own name on it. Different act entirely.

And the market is enormous. Quince, the most visible name in the category, passed a billion dollars in revenue last year and was recently valued above ten billion — most of that growth arriving in exactly the years Bain was counting customers out the door.

But the sharpest evidence isn’t the money. It’s the litigation.

In April 2025, Coach’s parent company sued Quince in federal court over two handbags. The complaint didn’t allege Quince had used Coach’s logo, because Quince hadn’t. It alleged Quince had copied silhouette, stitching detail and hardware placement. The case was dismissed by joint stipulation in June 2026 with no ruling on the merits, so nobody won an argument about what the law permits.

But look at what the filing takes for granted. Coach went to federal court to defend the look of a bag as an asset separate from the name on it. On that point the plaintiff and I agree completely. Two different products. Each sellable without the other.

And people buy the look alone for a reason that deserves more respect than it gets. They like a shape. They also know, from experience, they’ll be finished with that shape inside eighteen months. So they decline to put three thousand dollars into an appetite with a known expiry date, and spend two hundred instead.

That’s not a lapse in judgment. That’s judgment.

What happens when the first floor claims the second

Now watch what happens when a brand down here wants credit for a layer it isn’t delivering.

In 2025, Wirecutter asked me to take apart a Quince tote — the Italian Leather Triple Compartment Shopper, a hundred and fifty dollars. The product page described it as one hundred percent top-grain Italian leather.

Top-grain is the outer surface of the hide, where the fibre structure is tightest. It’s what makes leather strong and lets it age well instead of falling apart. When a tannery splits a hide, everything beneath that surface comes away as a separate and far cheaper material.

What I found in that bag, apart from an interior pocket, was split leather. In my words at the time: the lowest grade of leather you can legally use and still call it leather.

Quince’s response was that the bag is made with top-grain leather finished for durability and texture, and that the company stands by its quality.

The following morning, the words “top-grain” were gone from the product page.

I’ll leave those two facts sitting next to each other.

And I want to be precise about the problem, because it isn’t the leather. A hundred-and-fifty-dollar bag containing hundred-and-fifty-dollar material is not a scandal. That’s the trade, and it’s a fair one.

The problem is the claim. That buyer made an intelligent decision — pay for the look, skip the rest, spend accordingly. The description invited her to believe she was getting a floor she hadn’t paid for and wasn’t receiving.

Hold onto that. I’m about to show you the same failure at twenty times the price.

The second floor: quality stacked on the looks

One step up, something more interesting has been growing for a decade. Brands offering a considered design and refusing to compromise on what’s underneath it — charging five to seven hundred dollars rather than three thousand, because they’ve built two layers and they charge for two layers.

Full disclosure: this is where my money is. I’m director of craftsmanship and a shareholding partner at Stow London, and I run my own label, Pegai. Discount me accordingly.

But look at what those two actually do, because it makes the point better than my opinion could. Stow builds the looks and the quality and strips out the prestige premium. Pegai does something different again — I’ve never made a design claim there. The silhouettes are deliberately ordinary, timeless shapes nobody would call trendy, because what I wanted to sell was the leather, the hardware and the hand, and nothing else.

Two brands, two different combinations, neither one a rung on a ladder.

That’s the thing to take away, and it’s bigger than either brand. These four layers aren’t a staircase you climb. They’re a menu, and any brand can order from it in any combination — including a combination that quietly omits something you assumed came included.

This floor also isn’t just us. I’ve found the same discipline in a number of brands I’ve had open, most of which I’m not naming here because this isn’t a shopping list. I’ll keep finding them and showing you.

One concrete standard before we go up. On a bag at this level, the hardware should be stainless steel, or brass beneath palladium or gold plating, or brushed steel. The most durable metals in the category. Not exotic, not a secret. Six hundred dollars buys them.

The third floor: prestige on top of the other two

Then there’s luxury, where the logo does real work — where the object announces something about you before you’ve said a word. I’m not here to tell you wanting that is foolish. If a bag makes you feel equipped for the room you’re walking into, that’s a real benefit, and thousands of dollars can be a rational price for it.

But the logic of the ladder is the entire point. If prestige sits on the third floor, the first two have to be built. The looks have to be there. The quality has to be there. And then the name goes on top of a foundation that earned it.

That’s what all of us assume when we see the price. It’s what the price is for.

Quality is not optional up here. It cannot be optional up here.

So let’s check one.

The itemized bill

A Prada Cleo, at roughly three thousand dollars.

Function: delivered. It carries your things and it closes. No complaints, and no credit either — a hundred-and-fifty-dollar bag does the same job. Settled.

Looks: yours to decide. My position, plainly: it doesn’t move me. It reads as different in an unimpressive way, a shape that announces itself without rewarding a second look. But that’s taste, and mine holds no authority over yours. If the silhouette is what you want, this layer is delivering something real, and I won’t argue you out of your own eye.

Quality: not there. This isn’t taste. This is the part I can measure.

The leather asks nothing special of the tannery. Nothing rare in the selection, nothing difficult in the tanning, nothing in the finish requiring a skilled hand. Medium at best, and medium is generous. Note what I’m claiming and what I’m not: I’m not saying this bag is described as something it isn’t. I’m saying it is nowhere near what three thousand dollars should buy.

The hardware is where I stop being diplomatic. Remember the standard from one floor down — steel, or brass under palladium or gold. What I found on this bag was a soft alloy. Not steel. Not even brass, which is the entry point for metal I’d call good.

And here’s the detail that stayed with me. I’ve had another Prada bag open with proper brass in it. Same house, same territory, better metal. Consistently inconsistent.

The craftsmanship sits exactly where the hardware sits. Nothing sophisticated, nothing a competent factory anywhere couldn’t produce on an ordinary week. And that inconsistency is not a small thing. Consistency is the hardest quality to buy in manufacturing. Its absence is the loudest signal there is.

Prestige: everything that’s left.

Subtract a function any cheap bag delivers. Subtract a look you may or may not want. Subtract a quality layer that isn’t there.

What remains is the shadow of a logo, and that shadow is the heaviest thing you carried out of the store.

What I feel when I find this

Something I don’t usually say on camera.

When I open one of these and can’t find the quality, I feel embarrassed. Not on the buyer’s behalf — for the trade. I grew up in a tannery. I know what it costs to do this properly, and I know it can be done at these prices, because I’ve watched people do it at a fifth of these prices.

Finding a floor missing from a building that expensive isn’t a gotcha for me. It’s a bad afternoon.

Where sixty million people went

I want to be careful here, because I can’t hand you a headcount and neither can anyone else.

Bain says those consumers left. Bain also attributes a good deal of the shift to experiences — travel, dining, things that aren’t objects at all. Nobody has traced sixty million individual people to a new checkout, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

But look at what grew while they were leaving.

A lookalike brand went from nothing to a billion dollars in revenue. A whole tier of quality-first brands with no logo premium built real businesses at five to seven hundred dollars. Both of those things happened in precisely the window Bain was counting customers out the door, and both of them sell an unbundled version of exactly the thing the aspirational tier was selling bundled.

That’s not a coincidence, and it isn’t really a defection either. It’s a correction.

Because here’s what the departing customer figured out on her own, without a consultancy: she was being asked to pay for three floors and receiving two. So she stopped buying the building and started buying the floors she wanted, separately, from whoever would sell them honestly.

The industry read that as customers becoming price-sensitive. They didn’t become price-sensitive. They became itemisers.

The part nobody says out loud

Paying for prestige is not stupid.

Validation is a real benefit. Walking into a room and feeling equipped for it is a real feeling. The reassurance of a name people recognise is a real service, and human beings have paid for it in some form for as long as there have been objects. If you buy a bag for what it signals, and you know that’s what you’re buying, you’ve made an informed purchase and you owe nobody an explanation.

The mistake isn’t paying for validation.

The mistake is paying for validation while believing you paid for quality.

Those two purchases feel identical at the counter and diverge completely over the following decade. And it’s the same mistake the hundred-and-fifty-dollar buyer was invited to make, pointed the other way. One was told she was getting quality she hadn’t paid for. The other assumes she’s getting quality because of what she paid.

Neither was handed an itemized bill.

Nobody is lying to you, exactly. Nobody is correcting you either.

Only one layer compounds

The four layers age at completely different rates, and that’s why this matters more than it seems on the day.

Function holds until something breaks, then it’s zero. Looks depreciate on a fashion cycle set by people you’ll never meet. Prestige depreciates fastest of all, which is the one that surprises people — prestige isn’t owned, it’s rented, and the rent is set by whoever happens to be fashionable this decade.

Quality is the only layer that compounds.

A well-made bag doesn’t merely last. It carries the other three forward with it. Good leather keeps its looks because it wears in rather than out. Solid construction keeps its function because nothing fails. And an object that is visibly well made accumulates its own quiet prestige — the kind that doesn’t depend on a logo being in season.

Which is exactly what the two-hundred-dollar buyer understood without being told. She knew her appetite for that shape had an expiry date, so she declined to pay for permanence she didn’t want.

The person who overpaid is the one who assumed the third floor implied the second.

Before you pay

I’m not going to tell you what to buy. I don’t know your taste, your life, or what you need a bag to do for you.

But one question is worth asking before the card comes out, and it takes about four seconds:

Which layer am I actually paying for here?

If the honest answer is quality, check it’s there — and know you can often find more of it below a thousand dollars than above three. If the honest answer is looks, pay for it without apology, and consider two hundred rather than three thousand for something you’ll be finished with by spring. And if the honest answer is that you want the logo, want it openly, pay for it knowingly, and let nobody shame you for a choice you made with your eyes open.

Sixty million people worked this out and left. They didn’t need an essay to do it.

Nobody is ever going to hand you an itemized bill for a handbag.

So learn to write it yourself.

Stay leathertained.

Millions of people today are worried about AI taking their jobs and controlling their lives in some dystopian future. The anxiety is real, the headlines are relentless, and the fear feels justified.

But here’s what troubles me: while everyone is looking ahead at the AI threat, something else is already controlling them right now.

It’s controlling how they make decisions, how they spend their lives, what to do, what to care about, and even how valuable they are in society.

This may be shocking to some and awakening to others. To a few, it will sound like nonsense. But hear me out.

We Already Invented Our Own AI—Millennia Ago

Just like AI, we invented something a long time ago. It was revolutionary. It made life easier in so many ways and served us well for centuries.

We built an enormously complex ecosystem around it. And then something shifted—it developed its own mind, its own rules, its own power over society.

That thing is money.

When I Started Cutting Open Luxury Bags

A couple of years ago, I started noticing repeating questions and concerns about quality in luxury bags from both the media and my audience. These concerns were proven in my dissections many times over.

The bags I paid thousands of dollars for from modern luxury labels came with one basic assumption: they must be made with exceptional quality. After all, that’s what you’re paying for, right?

Wrong.

I found mediocrity in every way possible. Cheap materials. Sloppy construction. Cost-cutting at every turn.

But then I kept thinking: When did quality become optional in luxury? Because historically, luxury was the birthplace of quality. That was the whole point.

The more I thought about it, the clearer it became. This wasn’t just about lazy craftsmanship or a few bad actors. It was the result of a system—a very powerful and invisible one that we don’t stop to think about consciously.

That system is hyper-capitalism.

When Capitalism Became a Religion

Let me be clear: I love capitalism. It was the source of the fastest growth of prosperity and abundance we’ve experienced as humankind, particularly when it functioned as consumer capitalism—balanced and aligned with the benefit of the masses.

But then it broke away. It started to build its own intelligence, its own rules, its own army of enforcers.

Just like a religion, it began to shape systems designed to protect and nurture its power structures. Just like a religious state, it infiltrated governments, shaping everything to serve its own agenda—often at the expense of freedom and the benefit of the people.

And here’s what makes it more powerful than traditional religions: no one thinks it’s a religion. It seems benign. Neutral. Just “the way things work.”

Yet in disguise, money became God, enforcing its rules from every angle of society.

The Impact Is Everywhere

The air you breathe. The food you eat. The schools you attend. The doctors who treat you. The jobs you work. The products you buy.

Everywhere, money’s rules define the game. And the game isn’t designed for you to win.

We all know this. We all feel it. Don’t we?

In luxury fashion, it manifested as the complete collapse of quality. Because one of the fundamental rules of hyper-capitalism in business is simple: grow, grow, grow, and profit more every quarter.

And there are only two ways to do that:

1. Produce more, sell higher → Create endless spectacles to convince people to buy things they don’t need

2. Make it cheaper → Strip out quality, cut corners, exploit workers, ignore environmental impact

So prices skyrocket with propaganda about why and how “that bag will make you feel successful,” while on the other side of the same coin, they’re stripping quality out of the picture entirely.

It’s no surprise. Once you follow that system, this is where you end up. Always.

Money Developed Its Own Mind

With this train of thought, I realized something profound: money has developed its own mind and influence over society, controlling us to the core.

It defines:

• What we do

• How we do it

• What we should think we need

• Why we should buy it

• How it should make us feel

All engineered. All fed to us through every channel where we look, where we PAY—notice that word—where we PAY attention.

So What Should We Actually Be Afraid Of?

Don’t be afraid of AI, my friends. At least not yet.

Let’s first see what our other invention is doing to us. How it’s controlling and diminishing fundamental aspects of our lives right now.

This isn’t doom and gloom. This is observation. This is awakening.

And it’s not just philosophy for me—I walk this talk with my work.

Refusing to Play by the Rules

Through this content, I intend to raise awareness and help you see behind the curtains. But more importantly, through my brands, I refuse to play the game by the rules of this new religion.

At STOW, we looked at our numbers last year and saw that we could make 5,000 bags per year, all crafted in our boutique 10-artisan atelier here in Ubrique, Spain.

And we decided to do just that this year.

Even though we have demand for more. Even though the “rules” say we should scale. Even though every business advisor would tell us to grow faster.

We choose to take care of our initial believers first before looking for new ones. We want to focus on perfecting our existing offerings while creating a couple of new ones. We want to work side by side with our family of artisans, then go home to family time once the work is done.

We want to protect what makes us human. What makes us happy.

And we hope this sets an example in a world where almost everyone in this space goes absolutely the other way.

This Is More Than a Job

For me, this is more than a business. It’s a reason and purpose for life. And I love it.

I consider this the ultimate luxury: to do what you’re passionate about, on your terms, with people you like.

And I want to spread the joy and idea of this way of life, because we all can do it in our own ways. And as a result, we’ll all be better off.

Not because we’ve accumulated more. But because we’ve protected what matters.

Not because we’ve won the game. But because we’ve chosen not to play it.

The Question I Want You to Consider

So let me ask you:

Is AI really the bigger threat? Or should we first look at what’s already controlling us today?

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

And that’s when everything changes.

The Sustainability Confusion

Most companies who talk sustainability don’t understand nor mean it. Even consumers who ask about sustainability don’t really know what they want to see.

It is a hot and important topic and that’s why it appears in all marketing texts. But it’s also enormously complex, which is why it is often misunderstood and in many cases filled with flawed information.

“Sustainability is the ability to sustain — but predicting it is where we fall short.”

Let’s simplify it first:

Sustain+ability = the ability to sustain.

To assess this, we try to project if we can continue using or doing something without breaking other things. And that’s where our prediction efforts fall short.

Apple & Tesla: The Greatest Shames

Some of the largest brands today spread misinformation just because they want to play to the sexiness of the topic — not because they mean or care to act sustainably. Apple and Tesla are the greatest shames of this practice.

Apple’s “FineWoven” Flop

Apple announced a few years ago they removed leather from all product lines with a parody mocking the leather-wearing guy at the round-table. They said they’d use a fabric called fine-woven to replace leather for sustainability reasons.

A year later, FineWoven was gone. It didn’t sustain, not even for a year. What a joke. ;)

Apple needs a flashy keynote every year. It’s the tradition Steve Jobs started, but tech doesn’t move that fast. You can’t keep selling the same phone with:

• insignificantly better cameras, or

• new paint colors.

So they needed something splashy. Someone picked leather two years ago. Such a shame.

Tesla’s “Vegan Leather” Lie

Tesla, obsessed with marketing the “SEXY,” has been shouting a lie since forever. They say they use vegan leather.

First, there is no such thing. The term is banned in Italy and Portugal, and more countries are moving to protect consumers from it.

What Tesla actually uses is a cheaper fabric made with significant amounts of plastics.

• It falls apart in irreparable ways.

• It stays in nature as microplastics.

• It doesn’t save a single cow.

We’ve used leather for millennia. There’s proof at Pompeii: a tannery from 2,000 years ago. Yet we can’t find almost any leather in the environment. Why? Because it is fully circular — it dissolves back into nature after a long time of use. It is durable, not consumable, then back to earth.

“We don’t see leather trash piles choking up the earth. The cows are not extinct. It seems like we sustained leather use pretty well.”

And on the other hand… plastic.

We’ve only been using it for ~200 years, yet the earth is already rejecting it. Mountains of discarded plastics, oceans choking with waste.

So I ask:

Are plastic-based materials truly sustainable alternatives to leather — or a joke with disastrous implications?

Asking Smarter Questions

In summary, this fundamentally flawed information may come from companies we respect the most, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

Sometimes choosing the cheapest (most profitable) material and marketing it as the virtuous choice is simply corporate convenience.

As consumers, we can ask smarter questions:

“What’s the plastic footprint of that material or decision?”

Let companies do the homework. We are not here to eat every bite.

Three years ago, I asked a question and started cutting into bags:

At first, I was curious about leather craft. Were these bags we buy — especially the luxury ones — really worth their price?

But the more I cut, the more confusing the whole ordeal became. Because “worth it” is such a slippery question. It’s subjective… but it’s also incredibly important.

The Illusion of Distance

We’ve built tools to distance ourselves from reality — and in the process, from the true weight of our choices.

• Beef makes us forget we’re eating animals.

• Money makes us forget we’re trading our life.

• Credit cards push us even further away, until we swipe without even realizing what we’re giving up.

“We don’t spend money. We spend life.”

And once you see that clearly, price tags start to look very different.

My $3,000 Realization

I remember staring at a $3,000 luxury bag once. Instead of asking the usual “Can I afford this?”, another thought hit me:

“How much of my life does this cost?”

When I did the math, it came to about 120 hours of work at that point in time. Three weeks of my life.

“The real price tag isn’t in dollars. It’s in hours of your one and only life.”

For some people, $3,000 equals a month of their life.

For others, it’s just one single hour.

Same bag. Same price tag. Different cost.

What Else Could You Buy With That Time?

That’s when the clarity hit me. It’s not just about what something costs — it’s about what else you could trade those hours of your life for.

Would you give away 30 days of your life for a bag?

Or would you rather spend the same amount for a weeklong vacation exploring a new country with your family?

Would you give up three weeks of your life for a status symbol?

Or for memories you’ll carry forever?

“The bag doesn’t change. The price tag doesn’t change. But the hidden cost becomes clearer when you translate dollars back into time.”

A Better Way to Read a Price Tag

Three years later, I’m still asking the same question:

Is it worth it?

But now I know how to approach the answer.

Don’t look at the price in dollars.

Look at it in time — your time.

Because that’s the real exchange you’re making. And when you see it that way, the decision becomes a whole lot clearer.

“Every price tag is really a time tag. The only question is: is it worth it?”

I found myself watching a surprising number of YouTube videos lately with titles like “How to Stop Doom-Scrolling” or “I Ditched My Phone for 30 Days and My Life Changed.”

Apparently, the algorithm (quite accurately) picked up on my intentions and started serving me those videos.

And yes—I am working on reducing my YouTube time. It’s my only form of social media or entertainment, and I do enjoy it. But recently it has become a concern, especially because I often watch before bed.

Some nights I spend two hours in bed going from one video to the next. The problem is, those two hours push my bedtime past midnight, sometimes closer to 1 a.m.

I used to fall asleep around 10–11 p.m. and wake up at 6 or 7, fully rested and ready for the day. I loved that rhythm. Now, when I fall asleep late, I wake up groggy and rushed.

That was my signal for change.

The Hypocrisy of “Quit YouTube” Videos

As I watched these “digital detox” videos, I noticed a flaw. The creators would talk about how great it felt to be off social media, encourage me to log off…

…and then ask me to like and subscribe.

Well, I found it hypocritical.

Experimenting with Intention

“Life feels better when we are intentional, not impulsive.”

A few weeks ago, I installed an app that forces me to pause before impulsively opening YouTube. It simply asks: “Are you sure?”

That tiny question has been powerful.

In the past week, I’ve been able to fall asleep by 10 and wake up at 5 again—reviving my morning routine that I first discovered in Robin Sharma’s The 5am Club.

This morning, during reflection time, I realized:

I don’t need to quit YouTube.

I just need to use it with intention.

The Gift and the Trap

Unlike those videos suggest, I don’t want to completely remove my phone or YouTube. They are incredible tools.

I learn new things.

I run my businesses more efficiently.

I manage my day better.

But the trap comes when intention flips into impulse.

These platforms aren’t free—we pay with attention.

“They don’t sell us the app. They sell our attention.”

That’s what happened with me and YouTube. It got the leash a little more than I liked.

So now, it’s time to take it back.

Living Intentionally—But Not Rigidly

Using YouTube intentionally isn’t difficult. I open it only when I have something specific in mind to learn. I search, watch, and close.

It’s like shopping for shoes you actually need versus wandering into a mall just to kill time. One is intentional. The other impulsive. And the latter rarely brings joy.

That doesn’t mean life should be rigid. Life is beautiful when there’s room for spontaneity and adventure too.

Last week in Japan, I admired the incredible order of daily life—but it also felt robotic. That reminded me: happiness lies in balance.

Mostly intentional living.

A Simple Practice

It’s possible to find this balance if we regularly review and reflect on our behavior.

Asking: Where am I intentional? Where am I impulsive?

That simple awareness can help us recalibrate.

That, I believe, is where happiness lives.

Sometimes, just a few words from a stranger can reroute your entire life.
For me, it happened 25 years ago—on my very first airplane ride.

Leaving Home for the First Time

It was August 14, 2000, very early in the morning. My dad and I were boarding a plane to South Africa for a business trip. I was only 14 years old, and it was my first time on an airplane—nervous but excited.

The day before, my dad had asked me if I could be his translator.

At that time, I wasn’t confident at all. I was an average English student at best, stumbling through sentences and shy about speaking. I laughed at his suggestion, but my dad smiled and said, “You’ll be fine. You’ll help me.”

And here I was, flying out of home for the first time.

Lost in Translation

When we landed in Cape Town, we spent two weeks visiting rawhide suppliers. Those first days were rough. I felt embarrassed every time I tried to speak. Words slipped away from me. My ears grabbed at every sound, but I couldn’t make sense of them.

Still, I had no choice. I kept pushing forward. At restaurants, in cars, in meetings—I had to try. Slowly, I began to feel less afraid.

By day three, I was surviving.
By day five, I was comfortable.
By day seven, I was actually enjoying it.

A Dinner That Changed Everything

One night, we were having dinner at a local restaurant with my dad and his South African business partners. The man turned to me, a 14-year-old kid, and said something that stopped me cold:

That sentence struck me like lightning.
I had never seen myself that way before.

In that moment, I realized that language wasn’t just about grammar or vocabulary—it was a bridge.

It was power.
It was possibility.

The Addiction to Travel

That realization shifted everything for me. When I got back home, I attacked English with new determination. To my surprise, I became one of the top students in my class that year. And once I tasted that progress, I couldn’t stop.

I kept traveling. Every chance I got, I went abroad. With every trip, I felt more alive. I was addicted.

Today, I live in Spain—the sixth country I’ve called home. And I don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

Because I’ve seen that the magic and miracles unfold when we step outside our borders—discovering new cultures, tearing down prejudices, and realizing how similar, how united we are.

How beautiful the world is.

How great people are all around—regardless of nations, geographies, or religions.
We are all one.

The Sentence That Still Guides Me

That one sentence from a stranger in South Africa was the turning point of my life. It gave me a path I never knew existed.

I’m deeply grateful to that man for saying it—and to my dad, for giving me the chance to be there in the first place. For trusting in me when I didn’t trust myself, and for making me realize something so profound with my own eyes, simply by believing in me and leading me into the unknown with confidence.

It’s a reminder I carry with me always: sometimes, just a few words from a stranger can change the entire course of your life.

But you need to allow yourself those encounters—with courage and an open mind—because life-changing moments usually lie outside our comfort zones.

I’ve come to see that there are really two kinds of luxury in today’s world.

1. The Luxury of Showing

This first kind is for the outside world. It’s about signaling that you’re living a “luxurious” life—through logos, expensive places, and big price tags.

It tells others: I’m successful. I’ve made it. I’m higher up in the pecking order of humanity.

And sure, it can look impressive. But the truth?

It doesn’t always satisfy the one living it.

This luxury is fleeting. It requires a constant chase for the next thing—a dopamine hit that fades quickly, leaving you hungry for more. The luxury industry thrives on this. It keeps creating “the next thing” for you to want, an endless loop of illusion.

The moment you think you’ve caught it—poof. The image disappears into smoke, replaced by a new one dangling just out of reach.

I call this superficial luxury.

2. The Luxury of Self

The second kind of luxury is deeply personal. It’s not about the outside world. It’s about the joy of living on your own terms.

It doesn’t depend on price. It could be the cheapest or even a free experience that fills you with lasting joy. Most often, it’s not about “things” at all—it’s about experiences.

The world may have no idea you’re doing them, but inside, it’s euphoric.

This kind of luxury requires two things:

1. Listening to yourself. Quiet the noise. Notice what truly excites you.

2. Finding the time and courage. Time may mean cutting down on screens and scrolling through curated lives designed to sell you an illusion. Courage may mean pursuing something creative—like painting, writing, or even this piece I’m sharing with you now.

Once you act on these desires, the joy is addictive in the best way. You start to see through the smoke and mirrors of modern life. You break free from the invisible jail.

Each act strengthens your belief in yourself. Each experience brings serotonin that shifts your energy. You’ll notice a magnetism—a life force—that others can sense but not quite explain.

And that, my friend, is a path worth following.

Breaking the Golden Chains

When you free your mind from the idea that you need to buy something to be happy, the illusion disappears. The opt-in slavery dissolves.

Your soul finally finds its own luxury—the reason it came into this life in the first place.

That’s why I started this outlet.

About five years ago, I stumbled into this path through a few books that led to new practices and perspectives. Since then, my life has shifted in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Now, I’m finally listening only to my inner voice—no social media noise, no constant news cycle. Just following the pull of excitement, and watching what unfolds.

And the surprises have never failed me.

So here I am, sharing the lighthearted philosophical and spiritual side of my journey as an extension of my work with leather. My craft remains my passion, but this space is about the lifestyle implications and mindset shifts that have changed my life.
