The S&P 500 and Dow each added about 0.5% for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite gained roughly 0.8%. The Russell 2000 fell about 1.5%. Large-cap resilience therefore came with a clear small-cap warning from the part of the market most exposed to financing conditions and domestic rate pressure.

Volatility sent the opposite message. The VIX closed at 14.43 after touching 14.13 during Friday's session, its lowest intraday reading of 2026. Equity traders did not treat the hawkish policy shift as an immediate stress event, even as the rates market sharply repriced the September meeting.

That leaves the market in an unusual position. Trend support remains intact across the major large-cap indexes, near-term protection is inexpensive, and policy expectations have become less friendly. This week's labor data, capped by Friday's August employment report, will test whether calm options pricing can coexist with a Fed that is openly willing to tighten again.

🔶 Big Picture — Great Earnings, Harder Reactions

Nvidia delivered another exceptional quarter. Revenue reached $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year, and management guided to about $108 billion for the next quarter. Shares jumped roughly 8.7% on Thursday, then fell about 4.6% on Friday as rising rate expectations and margin questions competed with the growth story.

That two-day sequence is a useful read on the broader tape. Strong fundamentals still attract capital, but expectations and valuation leave less room for an uncomplicated reaction. The AI investment cycle remains powerful. The market is becoming more selective about where it pays for that growth.

The rotation inside technology supports that view. Recent earnings reactions lifted Salesforce about 23%, Okta roughly 29%, and CrowdStrike around 21%, while many semiconductor and memory names remain well below their June highs. Equal-weight software has materially outperformed equal-weight semiconductors since late June, suggesting that capital is broadening into companies that can show direct revenue gains from AI adoption rather than concentrating only in chip suppliers.

🔶 Fed Repricing — The Jobs Report Takes Over

Warsh's Jackson Hole message changed the policy conversation. He acknowledged better recent inflation readings but argued that the underlying trend has not improved enough to declare the job complete. Fed funds futures initially lifted the probability of a 25-basis-point September hike from roughly 35% before the speech to about 56% afterward, and the probability has since moved close to 60%.

That probability is a live market price, not a forecast carved in stone. The next run of labor and activity data can move it quickly. Tuesday brings ISM Manufacturing and JOLTS job openings. ADP employment, factory orders, and the Beige Book arrive Wednesday. Initial claims and ISM Services follow Thursday.

Friday's August employment report is the main event. Nonfarm payrolls, unemployment, wage growth, and participation will give the Fed another full labor-market read before the September 15–16 meeting. A resilient report could reinforce the case for another hike. A softer report could pull the market back toward a hold, especially if wage pressure continues to ease.

Equities have so far absorbed the shift better than bonds, currencies, and metals. That resilience should be respected, but it should also be tested against the incoming data rather than assumed to continue. The market now has to show that it can hold trend support while the expected policy path becomes more restrictive.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — The Weekly Profile Has Not Reclaimed the Pivot

For the September 4 cumulative GEX Profile, SPX is starting near 7698.33, just below 7700 pTrans and the 7710 HVL gamma flip. Weekly net GEX remains negative, placing price at the upper edge of the put cluster. The weekly regime does not turn positive until SPX reclaims HVL, and the call cluster does not begin until 7730 cTrans.

GEX History adds an important distinction. The shortest expiry, first monthly, second monthly, and all-expiry rows are positive, while W1 remains in transition. This is a mixed cross-expiry structure rather than full positive confluence: the broader backdrop is more supportive, but the weekly profile has not yet confirmed it.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Reclaim 7710, Then Enter the Call Cluster

The first upside step is a recovery through 7700 pTrans, followed by acceptance above 7710 HVL. Reclaiming the gamma flip would move the weekly structure back into positive gamma, but SPX would still need to clear 7730 cTrans to enter the call cluster.

Above cTrans, 7775 C3 is the first call-side reference. The larger test is 7800 C1, the dominant Call Wall. Acceptance above C1 would place SPX in positive extension, with 7810 C2 next.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Stay Below the Pivot, Move Deeper Into the Put Cluster

Failure to recover 7700-7710 keeps the weekly profile below its regime pivot and inside the put cluster. The first downside references are 7675 P2 and 7650 P3.

If those nearby levels fail, the profile has more room before the dominant 7550 P1 Put Wall. Weekly negative GEX can allow more reactive price movement along that path, even while the monthly and all-expiry rows remain positive.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

The expiration structure is divided. Longer-duration profiles remain positive, but the September 4 weekly profile is still below 7710 HVL, and W1 remains in transition on the panel. That longer-term support can help stabilize the broader backdrop, but it does not remove the weekly event risk around this week's labor data.

The key level is 7710 HVL. Above it, the weekly structure becomes more constructive and can work toward the 7730 call-transition level and 7800 Call Wall. Below it, SPX remains vulnerable to wider swings through the put cluster, with 7550 P1 as the major downside wall.

🔶 Stocks to Watch

Alphabet and Amazon offer two different tests of whether large-cap technology leadership can broaden beyond the semiconductor trade. GOOGL is just completing a broad positive regime shift, while AMZN's shortest expiries are already in extension against a supportive longer-duration backdrop.

🔹GOOGL

Alphabet bounced from the 340 HVL gamma flip on Friday, then moved back through the 342.5 call-transition level. The September 18 cumulative profile shows spot near 346.49, keeping GOOGL in positive gamma and placing price inside the call cluster, which begins at 342.5 cTrans.

The GEX History panel adds the broader swing context. The shortest expiry, first weekly, first monthly, second monthly, and all-expiry rows shifted together from negative to positive gamma. That alignment marks a multi-expiry regime-shift confluence, rather than an improvement isolated to one expiration. It supports a more stable volatility backdrop, but it does not predict direction without continued price confirmation.

The call cluster begins at 342.5 cTrans and leads into 350 C1, the largest cumulative Call Wall. The 350 strike also carries Ab1, the largest absolute GEX, the largest absolute open interest, and Friday's strongest call-volume and net call-volume concentration. Acceptance above C1 would move the profile toward 360 C2. On the other side, the put cluster begins at 340 pTrans, which also marks HVL, with the 330 Put Wall as its dominant downside reference.

🔹AMZN

In last week's Outlook, Amazon was sitting directly on the 257.5 gamma flip after filling its earnings gap. The question was whether the 257.5-260 area could hold as a constructive reset. That test resolved higher. The September 18 cumulative profile now shows spot near 266.56, above 255 HVL and the 257.5 call-transition level.

The call cluster begins at 257.5 cTrans and extends toward 280 C1, the largest cumulative Call Wall. Inside that cluster, 270 is C2 and also carries Ab1, the largest absolute GEX, plus the cumulative call-volume and net call-volume peaks. The 275 C3 level sits between them. Calls remain priced about 27% above equidistant puts, while IVRank near 14 and IVx near 30.7 keep the broader volatility backdrop relatively subdued. The put cluster begins at 242.5 pTrans, with the 240 Put Wall as its dominant downside reference.

The GEX History panel shows the positive shift reaching every tracked horizon. The 0 and W1 rows have moved into large green extension dots, which means price cleared C1 for the two shortest expirations. M1, M2, and ALL are also green, but with smaller dots, so the longer horizons are positive gamma without the same extension. The near-term gamma structure is therefore more extended than the longer-duration backdrop. Holding above 255-257.5 keeps that broader regime constructive; 270 is the immediate reaction zone before 275 and 280.

🔶 The Tanuki Angle

Large-cap resilience is still masking a more selective market underneath. Leadership is rotating rather than collapsing, which is constructive, but the next move depends more on confirmation than on the index close alone.

The volatility picture is similarly divided. Absolute implied volatility remains low, but puts carry a meaningful premium to equidistant calls. That is not outright stress. It shows a market that is calm in level terms while still paying for protection around event risk.

GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger. A call wall is not a guaranteed top, and a put wall is not a guaranteed bottom. These levels help describe the environment in which price is moving. They do not choose the direction.

Structure comes before strategy. A reclaim of the weekly gamma pivot would be more credible if leadership continues to broaden and volatility stays contained through the labor data. Without that confirmation, index resilience alone says less than it appears.

The S&P 500 fell about 1.4% and the Nasdaq Composite lost roughly 2.0%, ending three-week winning streaks for both indexes. The Dow declined about 0.9% for a second consecutive weekly loss. Friday's rebound improved the close, but it did not reverse the pressure that higher Treasury yields placed on technology and other long-duration assets.

This was not a uniform exit from risk. Bitcoin surged, crypto-related stocks rallied, and parts of the market continued to attract aggressive capital. The weakness was concentrated where valuation and duration are most exposed to the bond market.

Now the tape has to process Nvidia earnings, July PCE, and Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole address after monthly options expiration. Implied volatility remains subdued. The event calendar does not.

🔶 Big Picture — Rates, Risk, and the Event Stack

The bond market set the tone last week and remains the main transmission channel for the week ahead. The 10-year Treasury yield finished near 4.73% and the 30-year moved toward 5.27%, its highest area since 2007; a larger Treasury buyback briefly pushed yields lower, but the relief faded as the long end recovered.

Walmart's roughly 9% decline added a consumer warning while the market was already reassessing the cost of capital and the durability of growth. Oil added a second pressure point, with Brent up about 6.4% and WTI roughly 5.7% as Middle East supply risk returned. Higher crude does not restart the inflation trade by itself, but it gives the rates market less room to relax.

Technology absorbed most of the damage. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index lost about 5%, and the Nasdaq returned to its 50-day moving average after the yield-driven decline. Bitcoin moved the other way and lifted several crypto-related names by 20% or more. That split looks more like an aggressive rotation in risk than a broad exit from it.

Volatility rose during the selloff, yet the VIX still finished near 15 after Friday's rebound. The options market continues to price a manageable environment rather than sustained stress.

Monthly options expired on Friday, removing part of the positioning that had helped contain recent index movement. The next gamma profile now has to rebuild around fresh strikes and fresh event exposure. That does not guarantee a volatility spike, but it can make the market more responsive when new information forces hedges to adjust.

The compressed setup now meets July PCE, Nvidia earnings, and Jackson Hole in the same week. Chair Warsh will test the rates narrative, while Nvidia will test whether AI growth can still support premium valuations at a higher cost of capital. If yields settle and earnings hold, low volatility can support a controlled recovery. If either side disappoints, the next move may travel faster than the last one.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Below the Regime Pivot

SPX sits near 7654.93 on the August 28 cumulative profile, below the 7740 HVL gamma flip. That places the index in a negative GEX regime, with price starting the week just above the 7645 lower transition boundary and the 7600 Put Wall.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Reclaim the Pivot

An upside recovery first needs to clear 7710 C3 and then reclaim 7740 HVL. Holding above the 7740-7750 area would move SPX back into a more supportive regime and place 7800 C1 in focus. Sustained acceptance above the Call Wall would shift attention toward the large call open interest at 8000 and the speculative call-volume peak at 8075.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Test the Breakout Support

Failure to reclaim 7710 and 7740 would keep the index in negative GEX and leave 7600 P1 as the main downside test. That strike is reinforced by the prior breakout high on the price chart, so it has both options-based and conventional technical relevance. A clean break below 7600 would weaken that support and expose the lower put structure toward 7400, with negative gamma increasing the risk of wider intraday swings.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

The profile is fragile, but it is not one-way bearish. SPX is below the gamma flip while sitting only about 55 points above a Put Wall that also aligns with prior price structure. The key range is 7600-7740. Holding 7600 can keep the pullback contained, while reclaiming 7740 would restore a more constructive regime.

🔶 Stocks to Watch

Amazon, IBIT, and Nvidia enter the week with three different structure tests. Amazon is sitting at its gamma flip, IBIT has surged into a call cluster, and Nvidia faces earnings near its regime pivot.

🔹AMZN

On the long-dated December 15, 2028 profile, HVL sits at 257.5. Spot near 258.6 is resting almost directly on that line. Amazon remains in positive GEX while price holds above HVL, but the margin is now very narrow. This is a regime test rather than a comfortable positive-gamma setup.

The 260 strike is the first area to watch above the flip. It carries Ab1, the largest absolute GEX, and the strongest call-volume concentration on the chart. That places the heaviest nearby gamma and the most active call flow just above current price. A recovery through 260 would move Amazon back above that immediate inventory cluster and improve the quality of an HVL hold.

The larger call structure sits higher. The 275 strike is C1, the Call Wall and largest call NETGEX, with the broader call cluster building into that area. On the downside, 240 is P1, the Put Wall. The distance between HVL and P1 leaves a meaningful gap in the lower map if 257.5 fails.

For now, the earnings gap has been filled and the positive GEX regime is still intact. The next information comes from how price behaves around 257.5-260. Holding that zone would keep the recent decline inside a constructive reset. Losing HVL would move Amazon into a less stable gamma environment and shift attention toward the put-side structure below.

🔹IBIT

IBIT is BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, a spot Bitcoin product. It holds bitcoin and is designed to reflect the asset's price before fees and expenses, giving investors exchange-traded exposure through a regular brokerage account. It removes the need to manage a crypto wallet, but it still carries Bitcoin's volatility, tracking, custody, and gap risk.

The catalyst for last week's rally started in the bond market. The Treasury said it would at least double selected long-dated bond buybacks, which briefly pushed long yields lower and weakened the dollar. Bitcoin reacted strongly to that easing signal. The move then accelerated as roughly $2.7 billion of crypto shorts were liquidated and spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted heavy inflows. IBIT captured a large share of that demand. The bond move was the trigger, while forced covering and ETF buying supplied the follow-through.

The long-dated December 15, 2028 GEX map shows IBIT arriving at resistance with momentum still intact. Spot near 43.65 is directly under 44 C1, the Call Wall and largest cumulative call NETGEX. The next strike, 45, carries C3, Ab1, the largest absolute GEX, and both the call-volume and net call-volume peaks. Together, 44-45 forms the main call cluster after the rally.

The broader regime remains positive. HVL sits well below price at 37, with the 35 Put Wall as the larger downside reference. Holding above HVL keeps the long-dated gamma structure supportive, but location matters after a vertical move. The first test is whether IBIT can accept above the 44-45 call cluster or begins digesting the squeeze below it.

Implied volatility expanded with price. IVx is near 47.9, up about 8.6% over five days, while IVRank is 30.5. Options are no longer pricing the same quiet environment that existed before the breakout.

🔹NVDA

Nvidia reports after the close on August 26. Spot near 214 sits below 217.5 HVL, leaving the stock in transition ahead of the event.

The first upside test is 217.5-220. The 220 strike combines C3, Ab1, and the strongest call volume, followed by 222.5 C2 and the 230 Call Wall. Below price, 210 is the first support and 200 is the Put Wall with the largest put open interest and put-volume concentration.

Call pricing skew is positive but modest. IVRank is near 33.6 and IVx is around 43.6, while CALL$ is roughly 25.9%. Acceptance above 220 would improve the structure toward 222.5 and 230; weakness below 210 would shift attention toward 200.

The major indexes are no longer moving with the same internal support, and implied volatility remains low relative to the number of catalysts ahead. Calm pricing can support a recovery if the news cooperates. It can also leave the market under-hedged if yields, inflation, or Nvidia force a faster reassessment.

This is a week to think like a risk manager first. Let price show whether the Nasdaq can defend trend support, whether the new SPX gamma map can absorb the event flow, and whether Amazon can hold its own flip after filling the gap.

🔶 Case Study — ORCL Short Put + Call Butterfly

This week's case study reviews an Oracle position built after a sharp decline toward the 140 area. The structure combined a cash-secured 120 short put with a 20-point-wide upside call butterfly aimed at 160 C2. The put premium helped finance the butterfly while the position waited for Oracle to stabilize.

Oracle initially moved below the short-put strike, then recovered. The short put was bought back and one butterfly leg was rolled from 140 to 145, removing the uncovered downside while preserving positive delta for a continued recovery.

The rally stalled at 150, where C1, call volume, net call open interest, and the largest absolute GEX formed a strong confluence. One butterfly was scaled out there. The remainder was closed with roughly 10 days left after the rejection increased the risk of a move back toward HVL and the Put Wall. The final result was a $790 profit. The main lesson is simple: GEX helped manage the position and define the exits, not just frame the original setup.

That is an uneven confirmation rather than a clean one. The S&P is at record highs, the Nasdaq is still below its prior peak, and the Dow lost ground on the week.

This week is the follow-through test: Fed minutes, a consumer-earnings run, and Friday's monthly options expiration.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

Last week's softer inflation data did much of the heavy lifting. CPI reduced the pressure for a near-term hike, PPI reinforced that move, and Friday's weaker retail-sales data pushed September hike odds lower again. Buyers used that window in the indexes that were already willing to go higher.

The economy is still showing the same resilience the tape has been pricing. A constructive, non-bearish read still fits while stocks hold their ground. The unfinished piece is breadth. The S&P already made a new high. Nasdaq has more catch-up work if that bid is going to spread through the growth complex rather than sit in the index heavyweights.

Volatility kept falling with the advance. The VIX is approaching levels last seen around the end of 2025, and option premiums are relatively cheap. That is comfortable for a grind. It is also thin insurance into minutes, retail prints, and monthly OPEX.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma Into the 7800 Call Wall

For this week's August 21 expiration, SPX is starting from a supportive position, but the first real test is already overhead.

HVL at 7745 is the gamma flip. Spot sits just under 7800, so the index is in positive GEX: dips can be absorbed more cleanly than below the flip. The Call Wall is 7800, and that strike is also the largest absolute GEX. Premarket already tagged that wall and bounced off it. This is an all-time-high test into the call cluster.

On the put side, 7685 is the Put Wall. Closer in, 7720 is the next put GEX under the flip.

Put pricing remains relatively light in our skew measure, with PUT$ at 42%. If downside starts to accelerate, that leaves room for put IV and skew to reprice higher.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

SPX is constructive above 7745 HVL, but already testing the 7800 Call Wall at the highs. Premarket showed the wall can reject. The first repair is holding the flip. The first extension is clearing C1 toward 7850.

The key level is 7745 HVL.

Above it, structure stays more constructive.

Below it, the market is more vulnerable to wider swings into 7685.

🔶 Stocks to Watch

Nasdaq still has catch-up work versus the S&P's new high. Alphabet and Apple are two large pieces of that tape, and both are sitting on well-defined Aug 21 GEX maps.

🔹GOOGL

Alphabet has retraced about half of the prior run and landed on the gamma-flip zone. Cumulative HVL sits at 342.5, with the 345 transition band as the area price is hugging. Spot near 346 is just above the flip, so the regime is still supportive, but it is a close test.

The Put Wall is 340, a few points under the market. Overhead, 350 is the Call Wall and a stacked confluence: largest absolute GEX, heaviest absolute open interest, and the call-volume peak all sit on that strike. The top three call GEX levels then fill 350–355 (C1 350, C2 352.5, C3 355). If Nasdaq keeps strengthening, the watch is whether GOOGL can leave this flip zone and press that 350–355 call cluster, or stall under the wall.

🔹AAPL

Apple's selloff found a floor at 300. That strike is the HVL (gamma flip) and the Put Wall, with the heaviest put open interest and absolute open interest on the same level. It is a real inventory cluster, not a round-number coincidence.

Spot near 306 is back above the flip, so the short-term regime is supportive. The next Call Wall is 310, and the top three call GEX levels sit in 305–320 (C3 305, then C1 310, which also carries the largest absolute GEX and the call-volume peak). Since the earnings gap, price has carved a double bottom. If Nasdaq continues higher and closes more of the gap with the S&P's new high, Apple is one of the names that can start to look healthier with that bid.

Green headlines on the S&P do not mean the whole tape confirmed. Last week was selective: one average at highs, one left behind, and Nasdaq still doing catch-up work underneath.

Cheap options into a minutes-and-OPEX week can keep the grind going. They can also leave the tape thin if the next headline forces a faster hedge rebuild. That is not a forecast. It is the environment.

This week’s CPI and PPI prints will decide whether Friday’s rate-relief story sticks or gets rewritten.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

Last week’s advance was real, but it was not uniform. Technology reasserted leadership and helped the Nasdaq catch some of the ground it had lost versus the S&P. Several cyclicals participated less. The tape still rotates; it just rotated back toward the names that move the indexes hardest.

Memory was the soft spot inside the growth complex. SanDisk and Western Digital both gapped lower after earnings even where the prints beat consensus. The broader AI trade still wants larger guidance and clearer returns on data-center spend. That keeps semiconductor participation conditional rather than automatic.

Cross-asset, oil softened as Middle East shipping and ceasefire talk leaned less urgent. Gold had one of its strongest weeks in months after basing near prior lows. Softer yields, a softer dollar, and a soft jobs print gave the metal a cleaner bid. That backdrop is why GLD sits in this week’s watchlist, not as a trade call, but as a structure read against the same rates story the indexes are pricing.

The constructive bias from recent pullbacks still holds as long as buyers keep showing up. Only the Nasdaq among the majors is still hugging its 50-day average closely enough to look unfinished. The risk is not the Friday rally itself. It is carrying compressed vol into CPI and PPI while leadership stays concentrated.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma Under the 7800 Call Wall

For this week’s August 14 expiration, SPX is starting from a supportive position — but the first real test is already overhead.

HVL at 7745 is the gamma flip. Spot near 7758 sits just above it, so the index is in positive GEX: dips can be absorbed more cleanly than below the flip. The Call Wall (C1) is right above at 7800. Beyond that, the strongest call volume prints at 7940. On the put side, the Put Wall sits at 7670.

The tape looks a touch overextended after the push to highs, but a two-day correction already printed inside that stretch. The open question is whether any further digestion happens in time (sideways under the call wall) or in price (a deeper giveback toward HVL / the put wall).

Put pricing skew is historically low. Hedge intensity is thin — the same story the sub-15 VIX is telling. That leaves the book light into a week where CPI and PPI can reprice the rate path quickly. Hedging activity can still pick up before those prints; quiet skew into an inflation stack is not the same thing as a settled regime.

🔹GLD

On the Aug 21 GEX profile, 400 is a real confluence zone, not a lonely Call Wall label. That strike stacks C1 (Call Wall) with the largest Absolute GEX, the highest call open interest, and the largest call volume. Spot is pressed right into that pile, so the options book is heavily anchored overhead.

Underneath, the Put Wall sits at 370. That is the main put GEX floor on this map, well below the flip. Spot holds in a positive GEX regime above 385 HVL, so the first structural story is still the 400 cluster, not a regime break.

Call pricing skew is elevated: CALL$ at 59%. Calls at an equivalent distance from spot are priced about 59% richer than the matching puts. That fits a tape leaning into the call wall rather than paying up for downside.

🔹ORCL

On the Aug 21 GEX profile, 150 is the hinge. That strike is the Call Wall, the largest Absolute GEX, the highest call open interest, and the largest call volume — a full confluence ceiling with spot near 146.75 pressed just underneath.

Spot holds in a positive GEX regime above 125 HVL. The Put Wall sits on the same level at 125.

Call pricing skew is elevated: CALL$ at 57%. Calls at an equivalent distance from spot are priced about 57% richer than the matching puts — the book is leaning into the call wall, not paying up for downside.

🔹MSFT

On the All Expiry GEX profile, 500 is the Call Wall and a full confluence pile: largest Absolute GEX, highest call open interest, and Friday’s strongest call volume all land on the same strike. Spot is pressed right into that level, so the long-dated options book is heavily anchored there.

That 500 print also matters as prior support flipped to resistance — structure, not just a GEX label. Worth watching whether price accepts through the wall or keeps rejecting it.

The pricing backdrop is quieter than the wall looks. Call pricing skew is low and IV is compressed, so the call side is not richly overpriced into this cluster. The story is inventory and level memory at 500, not a crowded, expensive call chase.

Last week rewarded the selective book. Soft data eased the rate path, tech reclaimed leadership, and vol got quiet enough that the tape looked easy again.

Quiet vol into CPI and PPI is not the same thing as a settled regime. A relief bid can be real and still fragile if the next print reopens the hike debate. Leadership that concentrates in a few large names can keep the indexes green while the average stock does less work.

That is why we start from structure. GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger. A call wall is not a guaranteed top, and a put wall is not a guaranteed bottom.

The value is knowing whether price is accepting above the flip, stalling at a Call Wall, or losing the put map before you choose a strategy for the week.

🔶 Case Study — MSFT Jade Lizard

This week’s case study looks at a Microsoft Jade Lizard opened in a high-IV post-selloff environment, with price stabilizing near HVL.

The thesis was range-bound: keep the short put near the 350 put-side cluster (with breakeven below that shelf), and short a call spread defined so a sharp upside move could not create unlimited risk. The position was positive delta, positive theta, and negative vega — built for sideways-to-quiet trade and IV contraction into the April expiry window.

Price did what the structure wanted. After one more dip, MSFT chopped sideways while theta and softer vol worked. The position was closed early with about two weeks still left — roughly $310 profit, over half the original $585 credit — with no adjustments along the way.

The exit was not “max profit.” Delta was still positive, so another leg lower would have started working against the trade. Capturing most of the credit while the thesis was intact mattered more than squeezing the last dollars into expiry.

The weekend news created a possible off-ramp from the U.S.–Iran conflict. Any agreement still has to address the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear dispute, but oil reacted immediately. Lower crude eases one source of inflation risk.

The bond market remains the harder part of the setup. Long-term Treasury yields rose sharply last week and moved back toward prior highs. Higher risk-free returns compete with equities and raise the discount rate applied to future cash flows. Small caps and long-duration growth stocks are especially sensitive.

At the time of writing, FedWatch placed the probability of a rate increase at roughly 65%. That estimate can change quickly as new data arrives.

Lower oil helps, but it does not erase the cost of capital. If yields ease with crude, the relief rally can broaden. If they push higher again, the largest and most profitable companies may continue to carry the indexes.

The nearest call GEX is right above price at 7550 C1, which is also Absolute GEX. Beyond that sits 7575 C3, then 7600 C2, which also carries the largest call volume.

On the put side, 7475 P2 sits with HVL as the first downside reference. Below that, 7400 P1 is the Put Wall.

Put skew is elevated: PUT$ at 123.9% with IVRank 31.9 and IVx 15.5, down 2.4% over five days. Traders are still paying for downside protection even as the tape presses the call wall.

🔶 Stocks to Watch

This week is not only about indexes and yields. A few single-stock events will decide whether the relief bid stays narrow or spreads into the names that actually set the tone for growth and semis.

🔹NVDA

Open the Aug 21 GEX profile and the 200 strike does most of the talking. That level is both the call wall (where call open interest is thickest) and Absolute GEX (the strike with the largest absolute gamma). In plain terms: a lot of the options book is anchored there, so dealer hedging around 200 can matter a lot for how price behaves near that print. Spot is basically parked around that pile.

Two other labels help you read the same chart. HVL at 195 is the profile’s flip line between the denser positive- and negative-gamma regions; spot is above it. The put wall at 180 is where put open interest clusters underneath.

Then look at volume. CV and nCV are not open interest — they show where call volume and net call volume actually traded. Both sit at 210. So the standing inventory (OI / AbsGEX) is centered on 200, while the recent volume footprint is one strike higher at 210. That’s the useful contrast on this chart: where the book is built vs where volume showed up.

🔹AMZN

On the Aug 21 profile, 270 is the headline. Spot, the call wall, and Absolute GEX all land on the same number. When price, the heaviest call OI strike, and the largest absolute GEX strike coincide, you’re looking at a classic “options magnet” picture — not a prediction, just a dense concentration of positioning at one price.

Underneath, both HVL and the put wall sit at 230, so the lower half of the map is also aligned.

Volume adds a second layer: CV and nCV print at 280. Again, that is traded call activity, not the OI wall. So the chart shows a tight positioning cluster at 270, a shared lower shelf at 230, and a volume peak at 280. Three different questions, three answers on one screen: where inventory sits, where the put/HVL shelf is, and where call volume traded.

🔹AVGO

On the Aug 21 map, Broadcom sits just above the HVL at 380 — the flip line on this gamma profile between the denser positive- and negative-gamma regions. The put wall (P1) at 340 marks where put open interest is thickest underneath.

Overhead, the picture is a bit different from a simple “price glued to the call wall” chart. The call wall (C1) is at 410, but the largest absolute GEX strike (Ab1) and both CV and nCV (where call volume and net call volume peaked) all sit at 400. So the heaviest GEX pile and the volume footprint meet at 400, while the formal call wall is one step higher at 410 (with C2 at 420).

In short: lower put shelf at 340, HVL just under spot at 380, and a shared AbsGEX / call-volume cluster at 400 ahead of the 410 call wall.

🔶 The Week Ahead — Data and Earnings

Monday: ISM Manufacturing and PLTR.
Tuesday: JOLTS; CAT, SPOT, AMD, and SpaceX.
Wednesday: ISM Services; SHOP, UBER, DIS, and SNDK.
Thursday: Jobless claims and productivity.
Friday: July payrolls, unemployment, and wages at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Friday is the main macro test. Strong hiring and wages could lift September hike odds and long yields. Softer data could relieve rate pressure, although a sharp slowdown would create a different problem for equities.

🔶 The Tanuki Angle

A strong futures open can change the tone, but it cannot confirm the entire week. A durable improvement would include steadier yields, better Russell participation, and semiconductors that stop giving back intraday strength.

GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger, and a call or put wall is not a guaranteed turning point. Headlines provide the impulse; structure shows whether the move is accepted.

Respect the relief bid without confusing it with confirmation. Iran talks, the bond market, semiconductor earnings, and Friday payrolls will add the evidence.

🔶 New Video — NVDA Short Put Plus Call Butterflies

This week’s video reviews an NVIDIA position that combined a short put with call butterflies. The put financed the upside structure and added positive theta.

In Hungary, we often say that “even the grass doesn’t grow in summer.” This year, that expression seems equally applicable to the stock market.

Over the past several weeks, we have watched a slow and gradual decline, led primarily by Nasdaq technology stocks. The euphoria surrounding the AI trade appears to have shifted into a period of consolidation rather than another impulsive move higher.

There has not been much excitement so far, but will this quiet bleed continue next week?

Let’s take a look.

SPX Weekly Analysis

Looking at the weekly GEX structure, we can see that the market opened on Monday with a significant gap higher near 7,490. However, the move was quickly sold, and the index eventually traded below Friday’s closing price, reaching the 7,400 area.

We remain firmly in a negative gamma environment, whether we examine the weekly structure or the overall GEX profile. Today’s trading session did not materially change that picture.

This should continue to shape our expectations for the coming days. In a negative gamma environment, larger intraday swings, momentum-driven moves, and rapid directional reversals are entirely normal.

The weekly HVL is currently located at 7,490.

To the downside, the largest Put Wall is positioned at 7,300, surrounded by another significant put gamma cluster extending down to approximately 7,280. Interestingly, the TanukiTrade four-day Smart Expected Move model also places the lower boundary of the options market’s expected range in this exact area through Friday.

To the upside, the 7,490 HVL and the broad transition zone immediately above it remain the first major obstacles.

Only a sustained breakout above 7,500 could open the door toward 7,620, where the largest positive gamma cluster is currently located.

For now, however, there are no clear signals suggesting that such a breakout is imminent beyond pure speculation. Based on the current structure, a continued slow decline still appears to be the more plausible scenario, particularly if the existing downward trend remains intact.

What Should We Expect in This Environment?

Primarily, elevated volatility!

With the VIX trading near 20, it remains reasonable to expect substantial intraday price movement! The VIX and the negative gamma structure are currently telling a consistent story. The VIX also continues to move higher, which suggests that the current consolidation phase may not be over yet.

To signal a potential end to this environment, we would likely need to see either a meaningful bounce from an important options level or a strong and convincing bullish price-action reversal.

Looking at this week’s economic calendar, it becomes immediately clear why the market is currently so uncertain.

The Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by the Core PCE inflation report on Thursday morning. Core PCE is currently one of the most important macroeconomic events of the week.

It would not be surprising to see the market maintain artificially elevated volatility ahead of these events.

There is also an extremely important corporate catalyst to consider:

Microsoft reports earnings after the market closes on Wednesday.

Because of Microsoft’s substantial weighting in both the QQQ and the SPX, its earnings report could become one of the strongest fundamental market catalysts of the entire week.

For this reason, traders should carefully consider whether positions currently sitting near their break-even levels should remain open through these binary events—unless, of course, the position is specifically designed to benefit from elevated volatility.

According to Simply Wall St, Microsoft is currently trading significantly below its estimated fair-value range, which may make the stock attractive to long-term investors.

However, last week’s reaction to Google demonstrated how much downside pressure can emerge when the market begins questioning the potential return on massive AI-related capital expenditures. Any speculation surrounding Microsoft earnings should therefore be approached with caution.

What Could Work in This Environment?

Nobody can predict with certainty which direction the market will move next. Hopefully, everyone who has followed us over the past two years already understands that.

What we can understand, however, is how options are priced—particularly the effects of theta, vega, and implied volatility on multi-leg options strategies.

For this reason, it may make sense to consider a weekly range-based strategy in which positive theta can help finance the position while we wait for the week’s major events, while still allowing the trade to remain manageable during a moderate move higher.

The following example is provided strictly for educational purposes.

Educational Example:
SPX 4 DTE Put Broken-Wing Butterfly

The idea behind this structure is to provide approximately 100 points of upside flexibility in the event of a short-term market rally.

Because the position carries negative vega, a move higher combined with a decline in the VIX could potentially create an opportunity to realize a quick, modest profit while the SPX remains below approximately 7,530.

If the slow decline continues toward the 7,300 Put Wall, the position’s four-day expiration means that positive theta may work faster than the negative vega exposure harms the trade.

The example structure has the following characteristics:

• maximum risk: $2,000

• theta: +$85 per day

• vega: -30

Under normal market conditions, this structure may allow the SPX to move as low as approximately 7,280 without causing significant damage to the position.

At the same time, the trade could potentially generate a return of approximately 5% to 10% on the buying power committed before Wednesday’s close.

It is important to emphasize that holding this type of position through major binary events—including the Federal Reserve decision, the Core PCE report, and Microsoft earnings—would introduce substantially greater risk.

Assuming no unexpected news or major market shock occurs, the strategy may provide approximately 100 points of flexibility in either direction from the current market price.

That range could be sufficient to capture a small, controlled profit during the first half of the week. The intended holding period would extend no later than Wednesday.

This Week’s Educational Video

To demonstrate another way of using a Put Butterfly in a negative gamma environment, this week Gery, TanukiTrade’s Chief Options Expert, walks through a real SPX trade from start to finish.

In the video, he explains how he constructed a directional Put Butterfly using the HVL, Put Walls, and GEX levels in a market that appeared increasingly vulnerable to a pullback after a parabolic advance.

After scaling out of the position and making several adjustments, he ultimately closed the trade for a profit of approximately $680.

Major indexes finished lower. Nasdaq led the weakness. The Russell 2000 was the relative winner among the big three. That split already tells you something: the damage concentrated where the AI and semiconductor narrative lives, not across every sleeve of the book.

Friday’s catalyst was a lower-cost Chinese AI release from Moonshot (Kimi K3), which reopened the question of whether U.S. hyperscaler and chip leaders keep the same margin path if cheaper alternatives gain traction. Into the weekend, U.S.–Iran friction around Hormuz kept oil in the conversation as a secondary overhang.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

Last week’s message was rotation with a late AI shock on top.

Technology (XLK) dropped about 4.5% while energy (XLE) gained about 4.7% on Middle East stress. Financials, utilities, and staples also closed green. That mix is not a uniform liquidation. It is capital leaving the crowded AI/semiconductor complex and finding other homes.

That handoff has been building for weeks. Traders have been rotating out of semis into Mag 7, software, and healthcare. SMH sits roughly 20% below its all-time high, yet the S&P has stayed comparatively resilient because other groups have absorbed the bid. Iran escalations kept headlines hot, but the index tape stayed relatively orderly until Friday’s roughly 1% slide on the Kimi news. Crude’s weekly surge into the low $80s is a live inflation and risk-premium variable; so far it has been a supporting actor next to the semiconductor story, not the main driver.

Nasdaq is much weaker than SPX.

Small-cap relative strength adds another layer to the rotation argument. The Russell did not need to rally outright to send a message; simply losing less than the Nasdaq suggests that Friday’s pressure was concentrated in long-duration AI leadership rather than evenly distributed across domestic cyclicals. The question this week is whether that relative strength develops into genuine breadth or disappears once earnings volatility picks up.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Negative Gamma Below HVL, Nearest Call GEX at 7550 C2

SPX is starting the week from a fragile gamma position after Friday’s AI shock.

HVL at 7525 is the gamma flip. Spot at 7482 is below it, so the index is in negative gamma: moves can widen and reactions can run farther than in a supportive regime.

On the call side, 7550 C2 is the nearest overhead call GEX level (second-largest call NETGEX). Above that sits 7575 C3, then 7600 C1, the Call Wall and largest call NETGEX on the profile. Further out, 7700 nCOI marks the peak net call open interest, and 7750 CV/nCV marks the peak call volume / net call volume strikes. Those are positioning and flow references above the main walls, not the primary resistance map.

On the put side, 7450 P2 is the nearest put GEX level under spot. Below it: 7400 P3, then 7300 P1, the Put Wall and largest put NETGEX on the profile.

Put skew is elevated: PUT$ at 70.4% with IVRank 43.8 and IVx 18.1, up 3.6% over five days. Traders are paying for downside protection while implied vol lifts, which fits a tape already trading under the gamma flip.

Price is coiled under 7525 HVL, with the 50-day average near 7443 still underneath as a secondary reference. The first structural repair is a reclaim of HVL and a hold into 7550 C2. Failure to reclaim keeps the negative-gamma map in control into midweek earnings.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Reclaim HVL, Hold C2, Then Test C1

The bullish path starts with a hold back above 7525 HVL.

That would flip the regime from fragile to supportive and open a path into 7550 C2, then 7575 C3. Only after acceptance through those call GEX levels does 7600 C1 become the main upside reference. Beyond C1, 7700 nCOI and 7750 CV/nCV are secondary markers if the call wall is cleared. In positive gamma above HVL, dips can be absorbed more cleanly, but C1 can still stall the first extension attempt.

This is a repair-and-grind scenario, not a free breakout. Semis leadership and Wednesday’s mega-cap prints still have to cooperate with the structure.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Stay Under HVL, Press P2 Toward the Put Wall

The bearish path begins with a failed reclaim of 7525 HVL, or continued rejection underneath it.

Spot is already below the gamma flip, so the tape does not need a fresh regime break to stay fragile. A slide through 7450 P2 would point toward 7400 P3 as the next put GEX level. Sustained weakness below that opens the path toward 7300 P1, the Put Wall.

Elevated put skew and rising IVx leave less room for a casual dip-buy narrative. In negative gamma, moves can widen quickly if mega-cap earnings or another semis shock hit while price remains under HVL.

The downside map is:

First warning: stay rejected under 7525 HVL
First put GEX: 7450 P2
Next: 7400 P3
Put Wall: 7300 P1
Below HVL: structure remains fragile; vol can expand into the put cluster

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

SPX — reclaim and hold above 7525 HVL, or remain in the negative-gamma regime?
First downside response around 7450–7400; first meaningful upside test around 7550–7600.

🔶 Semiconductors — The Tape Still Keys Off SMH

Everything important still runs through chips.

Hyperscaler CAPEX skepticism remains the soft underbelly: demand commentary can stay firm while the market argues the spend is too much, too soon. That debate showed up again after strong TSM numbers met a sell-the-news reaction earlier in the week, and it intensified into Friday’s AI-competition scare. SMH’s path is steeper than broad tech, which is why it is the cleanest leadership check this week. Stabilize SMH and the Nasdaq complex can breathe. Fail to stabilize and the rotation story stays in charge even if defensives and energy keep cushioning the S&P.

Currently SMH’s price is sitting on the 550 Put Wall which is also a technical support level and a confluence zone with the highest Absolute GEX and Put Open Interest.

Earnings season stays dense, with the tape’s focus shifting midweek to mega-cap and chip names.

Green pockets in energy, financials, and staples do not mean the book is clean. They mean the pain is concentrated.

A selective book can survive an AI scare if leadership rotates instead of collapsing. That is the constructive read. The fragile read is simpler: when one narrative sleeve (semiconductors and AI spend) still sets the emotional tone for the Nasdaq, disappointments travel fast even while the S&P looks “fine” on a sector-mix basis.

This is exactly why structure matters.

GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger. A call wall is not a guaranteed top, and a put wall is not a guaranteed bottom.

The value comes from understanding the environment before choosing a strategy. This week that means respecting the rotation, watching whether semis stop bleeding, and treating midweek mega-cap prints as regime tests rather than predictions.

The week ahead is more difficult. Major data, earnings, and monthly OPEX are packed into four sessions.

CPI hits Tuesday, PPI Wednesday, retail sales Thursday, bank earnings open midweek, and July OPEX lands Friday. Iran kept oil firm into the weekend; SK Hynix’s U.S. listing added another semiconductor headline to an already dense tape.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

The headline index looks stronger than the average growth book.

Financials and cyclicals carried the S&P while XLK-heavy exposure underperformed on a relative basis. Crude gained on Iran headlines; Friday’s brief downside break was bought back within minutes.

🔶 SPX vs. NDX — Same Trend, Different Structure

SPX is closer to its previous high and sits more clearly above its 50-day average. Its short-term averages are also starting to separate.

NDX has recovered, but it still has more resistance overhead. Its shorter moving averages remain close together, which shows that the trend is less settled.

That fits the price action we have seen lately. Breakouts have failed, downside gaps have filled, and several moves have reversed within the same session. Confirmation matters more than the first move.

The S&P can hold up while large-cap tech pauses because financials and consumer stocks can carry more weight. For now, this looks like rotation inside an uptrend, not a broad market breakdown.

Oil is the extra risk. If the weekend move fades, equities may treat it as another short-lived shock. If crude stays higher, inflation concerns can return quickly.

🔶 VIX — Near Its 2026 Low

Front-week SPX implied vol has collapsed into the event stack.

VIX pressed toward 15 last week before a modest weekend bid on Iran headlines. Cheap index vol and low teens VIX do not predict direction; they describe a market not paying much for a volatility expansion before CPI, bank earnings, and OPEX. The first surprise can still reprice premiums quickly from this starting point.

VIX near 15 is close to its lowest level of 2026.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma, Testing C1 Into C2/Ab1

SPX is carrying a supportive gamma profile into a dense macro week.

Spot at 7553 sits above 7495 HVL and the 50-day moving average near 7457, which keeps the index in positive gamma. The profile is not wide open overhead: 7575 C1 is the first call wall, and 7600 stacks C2 with Ab1 (absolute GEX) into a single overhead hub.

Put skew at 67% is low relative to recent weeks, which fits a tape that has not been paying much for downside protection. That can support a grind while momentum holds; it also leaves less cushion if CPI, bank earnings, or OPEX disappoint.

Price pressed toward the upper call stack last week and is now working the zone between HVL and C1. Acceptance above 7575 opens the path toward 7600. Rejection from here would rotate back toward put-side references before the regime line is even tested.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Hold HVL, Accept C1, Test C2/Ab1

The bullish path starts with 7495 HVL holding while spot works the 7575 C1 wall.

In positive gamma, dips toward HVL can still be absorbed if the macro week does not break the surface calm. A daily hold above 7575 C1 would mark short-term acceptance and point the structure toward 7600, where C2 and Ab1 converge into the main overhead GEX cluster.

That is a controlled grind scenario, not a breakout forecast. Dealer positioning can slow reactions above HVL, but a crowded call stack at 7600 can still cap or stall the first extension attempt.

🔴 Downside Scenario — C1 Rejection Toward Put Cluster

The bearish path begins with failure at the 7575–7600 call zone or a slip back through 7495 HVL.

A rejection at C1 without same-day recovery would shift focus toward 7400 P1 as the first major put reference.

A close below 7495 HVL would change the environment. Below the gamma flip, moves can widen and downside responses can accelerate into 7400 P1 and 7350 P2.

The downside map is:

First warning: fail 7575 C1 / stall under 7600 C2/Ab1

First put reference: 7400 P1

Regime line: 7495 HVL

Below HVL: structure becomes more fragile; 7350 P2 is the next put-side reference

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

SPX is constructive above HVL but is already pressing into overhead structure. The index is pressing call-side structure into CPI, bank earnings, and monthly OPEX with thin put skew underneath.

The key level is 7495 HVL.

Above it, the market can still grind toward 7600 if 7575 C1 accepts.

Below it, the same macro week can produce faster downside responses toward 7400 P1.

🔶 Macro Calendar and Earnings

Tuesday through Friday runs data and corporates back to back.

CPI (Tuesday), PPI (Wednesday), and retail sales (Thursday) land ahead of and alongside Q2 earnings kickoff. JP Morgan, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley report in the first bank wave. Johnson & Johnson, UnitedHealth, Intuitive Surgical, ASML, and Netflix add healthcare, equipment, and consumer-tech reads. Netflix has been weak into its print even on firm index days.

That split between the broad benchmark and the Nasdaq-heavy book is rotation, not collapse. Structure and sector exposure count as much as which index printed green.

With premiums already compressed ahead of a four-day event stack, the tape can grind higher on momentum alone. It can also reprice fast on the first print that disagrees with the calm surface.

A crowded calendar does not require a prediction before the first release. Let price react, then decide whether the market still supports the same plan.

Good process means updating the plan as new information arrives, instead of defending a view formed before the week began.

GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger. A call wall is not a guaranteed top, and a put wall is not a guaranteed bottom. The value comes from reading the environment before choosing a structure.

🔶 Case Study — COIN Bullish Butterfly Financed at P1

Structure and adjustments drove this trade, not a directional call on crypto.

For the June 18 expiry, COIN was bouncing from P1 (the largest put wall) and holding near HVL while call volume ran heavier than puts. The setup targeted 180, just inside the adaptive expected-move upper bound near 185. The structure paired a 180 bullish butterfly with a short put at P1 to finance the debit and collect theta if price moved sideways.

The position was opened cash-secured. Upside needed price to firm; neutral drift still paid as time decay worked. The main loss zone sat below 150.

After a rally into 170 C1 (highest call GEX), the first adjustment bought back the short put leg for $0.45, banking roughly $240 and capping downside risk near $20 on the remaining butterfly. Half the butterfly was scaled out on June 16 for a $2.10 credit versus a $1.30 entry. With only two days left, price stalled at C1 for three sessions, theta was turning negative, and FOMC added gap risk. The remaining half closed June 17 at the same $2.10 credit. Total profit: $400.

The lesson is process at walls: P1 financed the entry, C1 defined when to stop waiting for continuation. With limited DTE, locking gains beat debating whether 170 would break on the fourth attempt.

🔶 Weekly Market Outlook

The tape enters July with green weekly closes and uneven leadership underneath.

Benchmarks finished the holiday-shortened week higher even as technology softened into the close. The Dow held above its 50-day average. The Nasdaq ended parked on the same line. Breadth and growth did not move in lockstep.

When the S&P holds up because banks and defensives advance while chips sell off, the headline index can look healthier than a Nasdaq-heavy book. That dispersion carries into a full post-holiday week, with Fed minutes on Wednesday and the earnings calendar starting to matter again.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

Flows rotated across sectors; macro did not break.

May payrolls came in lighter than expected while unemployment printed 4.2%, which took some immediate rate-hike pressure off the front end. Crude settled below $70 as geopolitical risk cooled. Implied vol and option premiums drifted lower into the long weekend even as growth sleeves weakened.

Large-cap indices masked the split. Financials and defensive groups absorbed money leaving the year’s strongest momentum trades. Technology and chip exposure carried most of the downside. SMH finished the week down roughly 4% but still above its 50-day, and it did not undercut the prior swing low on a closing basis.

Mega-cap tech added noise on top of the sector story. Some large names bounced on the week while others sold on company-specific headlines; a few reversed early gains after positive news. Tape direction is increasingly the sum of sleeves, not a single AI beta move.

Memory-related equities moved in sympathy with semis. Whether that group stabilizes or keeps leaking flows will tell us if last week’s weakness was a flush in crowded trades or the start of a broader de-risking in growth.

🔶 SMH and DRAM — The Engine Stalled, Not Broken

Chips led the Nasdaq lag; the weekly chart still looks like a pullback inside an uptrend.

The selloff was sharp enough to feel like forced exits in a one-sided long book, not a fundamental reassessment of the group. On a daily close, SMH has not broken the larger structure that defined the advance since spring. The 50-day is the first line bulls need to defend, but price also went a bit below the 600 Put Wall.

Memory is a separate tell. When DRAM and storage names fall in tandem with semis, the Nasdaq feels it immediately. When memory stabilizes while defensives are already firm, the broad indices can absorb tech weakness without a full risk-off session. Last week’s damage landed in a zone where prior breakout levels had previously attracted buyers. Hold or fail there sets the tone for whether rotation pauses or accelerates.

The price is still above 50SMA and bounced back from the 60 Put wall at first.

🔶 VIX — Compression After the Selloff

Vol fell into the holiday even as tech sold off.

Index-level damage stayed limited, so VIX did not spike on the chip weakness. Rotation into other sectors kept the headline benchmarks supported while growth corrected. That often reads as complacency at the index level even when sector books feel messy.

Cheap vol into a week with Fed minutes and the earnings runway reopening is a fragile combination.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma Above HVL

For this week’s July 10 expiration SPX at 7509.88 is trading above HVL at 7480, which keeps the index in positive gamma. The tape is not far above the flip line, so regime support is real but not wide.

Put skew at 60% is moderate, which fits a market still paying for downside protection even while spot holds above HVL. The oscillator histogram has cooled from recent highs, with shorter green bars and a few red bars at the right edge.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Hold 7500 Ab1/CV, Accept 7550 C1

The bullish path starts with 7480 HVL holding on any pullback. As long as spot stays above that line, the positive gamma regime stays intact.

Near term, 7500 Ab1 is the pivot. A hold on that level keeps the short-term structure constructive and preserves the push toward 7550 C1. Acceptance above 7550 C1 opens room for the tape to work higher, with 7800 nCV as the next major call-flow reference on the profile.

In positive gamma, moves can grind, but overhead tags still matter. 7550 C1 can slow or reject a session even in a supportive regime.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Lose 7500, Test HVL and P1

The downside map activates if spot loses 7500 Ab1 and fails to reclaim it quickly. That would break the current level while 7550 C1 still caps overhead.

From there, 7480 HVL is the regime line only a few handles lower. A close back under HVL would shift SPX into negative gamma, where reactions tend to be faster. 7475 P1 sits just below HVL on this profile, so a failed hub at 7500 can reach both levels in one move.

The downside map is:

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

SPX is in positive gamma, but the structure is compressed. Spot is parked on 7500 Ab1 with 7550 C1 close overhead and 7480 HVL only ~30 points below.

That is a constructive but narrow setup. Upside needs a hold on the 7500 level and acceptance through 7550 C1. Downside risk starts with a failed 7500 level and accelerates on a 7480 HVL break toward 7475 P1.

The key level is 7480 HVL.

🔶 Fed and Macro Calendar

The calendar is lighter than recent event stacks; the Fed still owns midweek.

FOMC meeting minutes land Wednesday afternoon. After a soft payrolls print and lower oil, the market will scan the text for any nuance on the rate path that the live meeting did not fully price. The decision is behind us; the minutes can still shift the read.

Routine data flow resumes after the holiday break. With NFP in the rearview, attention moves toward whether soft-landing narratives survive the first Q2 corporate updates. Yields have eased on the jobs data, but the 10-year has not fully reversed its uptrend. Rates and rotation can pull the tape in different directions on the same session.

Green weekly closes can hide a selective book.

Last week’s winners in growth gave back more than the headline indices suggested. That is rotation, not collapse, but it means structure and sector exposure matter as much as index direction.

Compressed vol into Fed minutes and an earnings runway that is about to open leaves little margin for disappointment. That can support a grind if chips stabilize. It also means the next catalyst does not need to be large to move positioning.

GEX is not a crystal ball. HVL is not a mechanical trigger. A call wall is not a guaranteed top, and a put wall is not a guaranteed bottom. The value is in reading the environment before choosing a structure. This week that environment is split: broad index support, narrow leadership, and a chip complex that still has to prove it can hold.

🔶 Case Study — SPX Call Diagonal: Scaling Out Through Regime Change

Structure drove the entry, not a directional bet.

SPX had pressed into major put-side support near 7300. The read was a bounce toward the gamma flip line, not a sustained rally call. A flat-delta call diagonal limited downside if the bounce failed while keeping upside participation if price reclaimed the regime pivot.

The trade opened for a $125 debit on a five-point call diagonal. The next session moved quickly; half the structure was sold at $170 after a strong one-day gain, cutting downside exposure while leaving some upside into a heavy event window.

With a major IPO day ahead and price at the HVL pivot, full size no longer matched the risk profile. Scaling out was a risk-management decision, not a thesis change.

After the FOMC press conference, tone turned more hawkish than the market had hoped. Spot slipped back below HVL into negative gamma, and the structure no longer fit the entry environment. Another partial exit followed; the final quarter closed at $170 ahead of travel. Total profit: $480.

The takeaway is process over prediction: put-side support for entry, defined risk in the structure, scale-outs on gain, event risk, regime change, and personal bandwidth. None of that required knowing the next headline.

Last week kept traders busy. Traders moved through Wednesday CPI, Friday’s record SpaceX IPO, and a steady stream of Iran-related headlines. Sessions swung. Premium expanded in spots that had been quiet for weeks.

Over the weekend, Trump signaled progress toward an Iran deal. /ES and /NQ futures gapped sharply higher before the cash open. Oil pulled back. The tape looked less defensive than it did heading into the close on Friday.

VIX had corrected higher during the volatile stretch, reaching toward 23 at one point. The relief headline brought implied vol back down. Good geopolitical news can compress vol fast when the prior move was headline-driven.

Can that gap hold into Kevin Warsh’s first FOMC meeting as Fed Chair and quarterly options expiration on June 18?

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

Iran stayed at the center of the macro story all last week. By the weekend, the tone shifted. Headlines around easing tensions and potential progress at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in France (June 15–17) helped fuel the futures gap higher and took some pressure off crude.

That is a different opening tone. Geopolitical risk can reverse quickly. The market is pricing relief, not a finished story.

The SpaceX IPO landed last week as one of the largest listings on record. With that event behind us, some participants expect the index range to open up again after weeks of event stacking. The IPO also kept tech and innovation sentiment in the conversation even on days when the broad tape was choppy.

Underlying all of this is still the rates channel. The 10-year yield (TNX) pulled back on Friday but remains on an upward slope near 4.5%. Midweek saw another push higher in yields before that fade. When yields run, large-cap growth and Russell 2000-style small caps often feel it first. If the 10-year breaks higher again, SPX can hold a gap and still struggle beneath the surface. Russell-heavy names can feel it sooner.

Retail sales, industrial production, and housing starts land in a shortened calendar alongside G7 and the Fed.

🔶 VIX & Volatility Regime

VIX corrected higher as last week’s events stacked up. The index reached toward 23 during the volatile stretch. That was not a full crisis print, but it was a clear step up from the compression that had been masking how thin hedges had become.

The weekend Iran headline brought VIX back down. Relief gaps and vol compression often arrive together when the catalyst is geopolitical rather than financial.

The test is whether compression sticks. FOMC on June 16–17 and triple witching OPEX on June 18 are the next vol events. A VIX that drifts lower would help the gap hold. A renewed bid in vol would fit a market that is still event-heavy even after the weekend headline.

🔶 Rates — TNX Near 4.5%

Yields deserve their own line item this week.

TNX spent part of last week grinding higher, then eased into Friday. The broader trend is still up toward the 4.5% area. Fed messaging under Kevin Warsh’s first meeting as Chair will be watched alongside the dot plot and any shift in rate expectations.

Higher yields do not automatically kill a relief rally. They do change which pockets lead. Growth and long duration can lag even when SPX futures gap up. Russell 2000 and small-cap beta often react first when the 10-year pushes.

Watch TNX in the same window you watch SPX structure. They are not the same trade, but they often rhyme on risk-off days.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma Above HVL

For this week’s Thursday, June 18 expiration (triple witching in a shortened week; Friday is a holiday, so this profile reflects the Thursday expiry, not a standard Friday weekly roll), SPX is starting from a constructive position.

Spot at 7523 sits above HVL at 7420, which puts the index in positive gamma. Moves can still be fast around headlines, but the broad regime favors more controlled two-way trade than a pure negative-gamma tape.

The call-side map is stacked in a tight band above spot. 7500 carries C2 + Ab1 on the same strike, a confluence zone spot has just reclaimed after the bounce. 7550 C3 is the next overhead test, only a few handles above cash. 7600 C1 is the dominant call wall on this expiry.

On the downside, 7355 P2 is the first put reference below spot, then 7200 P1 and 7100 P3. 7000 stacks POI, COI, and AbOI (peak put open interest, call open interest, and absolute open interest), which makes it a major structural magnet if the tape gives back the gap.

The constructive path starts with spot staying accepted above 7420 HVL and holding 7500 C2 + Ab1 (highest absolute gex) after the rebound.

In positive gamma, a hold above the flip keeps the tape rotational rather than purely reactive. The immediate test is whether price can accept 7550 C3 rather than stall at the 7500 confluence. A clean hold above C3 opens room toward 7600 C1, the main call wall on this expiry.

Triple witching on Thursday adds pin risk around the heaviest strikes. With the call stack compressed between 7500 and 7600, OPEX can reinforce that band if buyers keep paying for upside into the Fed.

In simple terms:

SPX above 7420 HVL keeps the regime supportive.
Holding above 7500 C2 + Ab1 keeps the short-term bounce structure alive.
The next major upside references are 7550 C3, then 7600 C1.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Lose 7500, Retest P2 and the Flip

The downside path turns on losing the 7500 C2/Ab1 zone or failing to accept 7550 C3 from below.

A slip back under 7500 raises the odds of a retest toward 7355 P2, then 7200 P1 and 7100 P3. Losing 7420 HVL would shift the profile back toward negative gamma, where moves can widen into FOMC and the Thursday roll.

The 7000 confluence (POI, COI, AbOI) sits as the deepest major cluster on the map if the gap fills hard. Low put skew at 41.8% fits that fragility: hedges are thin, so a disappointment can travel faster than the headline gap suggested.

That is not a broken setup. It is a crowded one into FOMC and a Thursday triple witching expiry. The gap helped; the structure still has to choose whether to accept the call stack or rotate back through 7500 toward 7355 P2.

The key level is 7420 HVL. Above it, the regime stays supportive even if the tape pauses at C3. Below it, the Iran gap becomes a reflex inside a more fragile profile.

🔹 OPEX — Triple Witching (June 18)

Quarterly expiration hits June 18.

Index, equity, and futures options settle together. That removes a large slice of positioning and can change hedging behavior into the close. When the week already includes FOMC and a geopolitical gap, OPEX is not a footnote.

Watch whether SPX gravitates toward a major GEX cluster into Thursday and Friday, or whether Fed messaging overrides pin dynamics.

The S&P 500 had been on a nine-week winning streak. Volatility was low. Risk appetite still looked fine into the jobs report. Then May payrolls landed at 172,000, roughly double expectations. Yields jumped. The S&P fell about 2.6% and the streak ended.

The Nasdaq did much worse. The index dropped more than 4% on the day. QQQ fell close to 5%. The broad index did not fall evenly. Tech, semis, and the AI trade took most of the damage.

That does not mean the uptrend is over. Strong markets can absorb a bad Friday and move on. Right now we are watching whether this was a normal pullback after a two-month run, or something more durable in rates, positioning, and vol.

CPI, PPI, and the SpaceX IPO land on top of that. Institutional rebalancing may already be moving size ahead of the listing.

Can buyers step in above the major moving averages, or does the tape stay defensive into Wednesday’s inflation data? That is the debate for the week.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

The May jobs report was the trigger.

Payrolls rose 172,000. Unemployment held at 4.3%. A strong labor market is not bearish on its own. It does complicate the Fed story when the market had been leaning toward cuts. Treasury yields moved up. Talk of holding, or even hiking, came back into the conversation.

Growth and long-duration names felt that first. That is where positioning had been most one-sided.

SMH was the worst of it. The semi ETF fell about 9% on Friday after leading the rally for two months. Broadcom’s soft guidance had already hurt AI sentiment. Friday’s rates move hit Nvidia, AMD, Micron, Intel, and the rest of the group.

The longer trend is not broken yet. SPX, Nasdaq, and the Dow are still above their 50-day and 200-day averages. Fundamentals did not change in one session. Positioning, rates, and vol did.

After two months straight up, some giveback was due. You do not need a recession scare to get a red day. You need a crowded trade and a catalyst. Friday had both.

🔹SpaceX and index flows

SpaceX is expected to list on Nasdaq around June 12. Index rules were updated for mega IPOs, but the calendars are not the same.

Nasdaq-100 / QQQ: Fast entry can apply after 15 trading days if the company ranks in the top 40 by market cap. A June 12 listing points to late June or early July for Nasdaq-100 inclusion. QQQ and other trackers would need to buy SpaceX and fund that by trimming other holdings.

Russell 1000 (not IWM): IWM is Russell 2000. SpaceX would enter Russell 1000 funds such as IWB, not small-cap IWM. FTSE Russell said on June 4 that if SpaceX clears the fast-entry threshold on its first close (expected June 12), inclusion would be effective June 29 after the June 26 close, tied to the semi-annual reconstitution.

S&P 500 / SPY: S&P Dow Jones kept its seasoning rules. No fast track. SPY-weight passive buying is likely a 2027 story if profitability tests are met.

Two clocks are running: Nasdaq-100 (~15 sessions after IPO) and Russell 1000 (June 29 if confirmed). Both can mean selling in existing large caps to make room. That did not have to cause Friday’s drop by itself. It fits with profit-taking, higher yields, and funds getting ready for a huge new name.

🔶 VIX & Volatility Regime

VIX was at its lowest levels since January on Thursday. Friday flipped that.

The index posted its largest one-day rise (40%) since March. SPX options volume hit a record at Cboe. This was not panic levels on the VIX. It was vol catching up to a market that had been running hot on narrow leadership.

Low vol weeks often mean thin hedges. A hot jobs print plus a semi selloff can move faster than the same headline would in a normal vol regime. Nasdaq fell harder than VIX rose, which still looks more like a tech/semi unwind than a systemic break.

Bond vol joined in. Yields rose on the data. Bearish bets showed up in long-duration Treasury ETFs.

Wider swings are likely until CPI and PPI either calm the rates story or extend it. A VIX drift lower would help battered growth names. A sustained bid in vol keeps pressure on the same crowded longs that sold off Friday.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Negative Gamma Below HVL

SPX enters the week in a different regime than the one that carried the nine-week streak.

Price is trading around 7418, clearly below HVL at 7470. That places the index in negative gamma territory, where moves tend to be more reactive and less mean-reverting than they were while spot held above the flip level.

The profile shows a dense put-side cluster between 7350 and 7400. P1 sits at 7400 and P2 at 7350. Price is pressing that zone after Friday’s selloff. Overhead, the call ladder is stacked at 7525 (C1) and 7550 (C2), now well above spot rather than a nearby magnet.

The options backdrop changed just as fast as the candle. Put pricing skew jumped from roughly 50% to above 91% on the selloff. Hedging turned back on after weeks of faded protection. IVRank is near 55, and the oscillator panel shows the same shift: downside premium expanded sharply into the close.

The index is still above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages on the daily chart. The longer trend is not broken on that basis. The short-term GEX structure is more defensive. Price lost HVL, skew repriced, and the first meaningful support test is already underway at the 7400 put wall.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Reclaim HVL First

The bullish path starts with stabilization, not extension.

As long as SPX remains below 7470 HVL, rallies can stay fragile. The first structural upgrade is a reclaim of HVL. That would shift the tape back toward a more controlled positive gamma read and reduce the risk of reactive two-way whipsaws.

If buyers can hold above 7400 P1 and push back through 7470, attention would move toward the call cluster at 7525 C1. That zone is the first major overhead reference. A clean hold above HVL does not guarantee a run to C1, but it opens the door for a more constructive grind rather than a pure defense of the put wall.

In positive gamma, moves can still grind higher, but call walls remain reaction zones. 7550 C2 is the next reference above C1 if momentum broadens.

In simple terms: SPX above 7470 HVL would improve the regime. Holding above 7400 P1 keeps the near-term bounce structure alive. The first major upside reference after HVL is 7525 C1.

🔴 Downside Scenario — P1 Failure Extends the Unwind

The downside scenario is already active while price sits below HVL.

The first level in play is 7400 P1. Spot is hovering just above it. A break below 7400 would shift focus to 7350 P2 and the wider put-side zone between those strikes. In negative gamma, losing a nearby put cluster can accelerate selling as hedging flows reinforce the move.

The regime line remains 7470 HVL. A failed bounce that cannot reclaim it keeps the structure defensive. That fits a week with CPI and PPI still ahead and put skew already elevated.

The downside map is: First warning: failure back below 7400 P1 First support / put reference: 7350 P2 Regime line: 7470 HVL Below HVL: structure remains fragile

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

SPX is not broken on the daily trend, but the GEX setup is more defensive than it was a week ago.

Friday snapped a low-vol grind into a high-skew tape. Put protection repriced fast. That does not mean every bounce fails. It does mean reactions near 7400 and any rally into 7470 deserve more respect than they would have on Thursday.

The key level is 7470 HVL.

Above it, the structure becomes more constructive.

Below it, the market remains vulnerable to wider swings and faster downside responses while the put wall is tested.

🔶 QQQ / Nasdaq Structure — Below HVL, Testing P1

QQQ took the harder hit on Friday.

The ETF fell close to 5% on the day, roughly double the S&P 500 drop. That fits the week’s broader message: the selloff was not uniform. Tech and growth carried the most damage after leading the two-month rally.

Price is trading around 705, clearly below HVL at 716. QQQ is in negative gamma, the same broad regime as SPX, but with higher implied vol and a more extended setup into the break. The index pressed toward 750 before Friday’s unwind. It is now below P2 at 710 and sitting just above P1 at 700.

The call ladder remains stacked overhead at 720 C1, 730 C2, and 745 C3. None of those levels are nearby magnets anymore. The near-term battle is on the put side.

IVRank is 82, well above SPX. IVx rose 7.2% over five days. Put premium is back in the mix at 56% on the pricing read, with deeply negative skew across near-term expiries. The oscillator shows the same shift: vol expanded into the close and GEX flipped defensive.

Compared to SPX, QQQ looks more damaged on the tape and more expensive in options. The Nasdaq still has index-flow noise ahead with the SpaceX IPO calendar, but this week’s first read is structure and vol, not a headline trade on the listing.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Hold P1, Reclaim HVL

The constructive path starts at 700 P1.

Spot is hovering just above it. A hold there would keep the immediate breakdown contained. The more important upgrade is still a reclaim of 716 HVL. Until that happens, bounces can stay reactive rather than trending.

If buyers can push back above HVL, the next references are 720 C1 and 730 C2. Those levels now act as overhead supply after the parabolic run into the highs. A positive gamma read would require acceptance back above the flip line first.

In simple terms: QQQ above 716 HVL would improve the regime. Holding above 700 P1 keeps the near-term bounce attempt alive. The first major upside reference after HVL is 720 C1.

🔴 Downside Scenario — P1 Break Opens 690

The downside path is live while price remains below HVL.

700 P1 is the first support test. A break below it would shift attention toward 690 P3 and a wider air pocket between the current put cluster and the next major put reference. In negative gamma, losing P1 can accelerate the move faster than a similar break would in a calm positive gamma week.

710 P2 has already failed on the selloff. That keeps the burden on buyers to prove something quickly. A bounce that stalls under 716 HVL would leave the Nasdaq vulnerable into CPI and PPI with premium already elevated.

🔹 What the Current QQQ Structure Tells Us

🔶 Trading in Higher Vol

Friday pushed us from a compressed vol week into something more active. That changes how we approach setups, not just which levels we watch.

When implied vol is rising, we keep net delta in a tighter range. The book does not need to be flat. It should not be aggressively long or aggressively short into CPI with VIX waking up and semis still resetting.

Rallies into resistance are where we look at hedges and bearish structures. Not because a top is guaranteed, but because premium is richer and extension trades carry less edge. GEX call walls and obvious prior highs are the map for those ideas.

Selloffs into support are the mirror image. After a flush like Friday, bullish structures are easier to justify near put walls, HVL, and support clusters. Tech may offer those zones this week if structure holds. Location still comes first.

Size matters more when vol is up. Bullish and bearish trades alike should carry limited risk if the index keeps trending and does not reverse on cue. CPI, PPI, and the SpaceX flow calendar are exactly the kind of week where direction can be right and timing wrong.

Tighten delta, trade the side that fits the location, and keep risk contained until the vol regime settles.

🔶 The Tanuki Angle

Nine up weeks looks great on a headline. Underneath, the rally was narrow. Semis led. Calls dominated. Vol slept. Rates were an afterthought until Friday.

None of that ends a bull market by itself. Pullbacks happen. The margin for error is just smaller than it was a month ago.

At entry, SPX was below HVL with the main put wall at 6500. That level had already been tested several times as both a GEX reference and a technical support zone. Put volume was elevated there, which is never a guarantee of a bounce, but it fit the setup. The first structure was a 50–60 point broken wing with the short strike at 6500, opened for a $5 debit. Max risk was about $2,000. The realistic target was not max payout. It was roughly 10% on risk, or around $200, in a market that was already moving fast.

Two days later, 6500 failed. The trade did not get abandoned. The put wall shifted to 6475, with 6400 as the next major level. The original butterfly was rolled for credit, and a second broken wing was added to target 6400 and extend downside breathing room. Max risk moved up to about $3,000. Further rolls narrowed the tent, lifted the upside P/L profile, and kept delta near flat while IV stayed elevated.

By Monday, the position was profitable even though the original bounce thesis was wrong. After a volatile Friday that pushed price toward the combined break-even zone, the trade was closed ahead of expiration for about $470. That was more than 10% on the capital at risk at that stage.

The lesson is not the first target. It is how the structure was managed when the market broke lower: roll, add, keep risk defined, and take profit when the tape turns unstable again near break-even.

The S&P 500 closed last week at another record high, extending one of the longest weekly winning streaks (9 weeks - 20% gain) since 2023.

On the surface, the message remains constructive: buyers continue to support the tape, volatility has drifted lower, and risk appetite remains firm. The Dow and Nasdaq also finished at record levels, while technology and semiconductor earnings helped reinforce the AI and infrastructure narrative.

But the internal setup is more nuanced.

Leadership remains narrow. The Russell did not confirm Friday’s new highs in the other majors, a reminder that rate-sensitive and lower-quality parts of the market are lagging. Software and higher-beta names have started to bounce, but the index is still dependent on the same tech-led group that has driven most of the advance.

That does not mean the rally must fail. Strong markets can stay strong for longer than expected.

But the market is entering June with a denser event map ahead — and less room for disappointment than the headline index level alone would suggest.

🔶 Big Picture Market Context

The broader trend is still intact. Indexes remain near highs, tech continues to lead, and several beaten-down software names have attracted renewed interest. That suggests speculative appetite is returning — but participation is still selective.

Financials, healthcare, and defensives have lagged, while energy fell with crude on de-escalation hopes around the U.S.–Iran conflict. Headline flow around ceasefire talks and high-level meetings kept risk assets supported through Friday, even though no final deal was confirmed at the close. Lower oil has helped the tape; a reversal in that narrative would change the tone quickly.

Rates remain the other key variable. The 10-year yield pulled into trendline support near 4.4%, while the 30-year approached a zone just under 5%.

Russell softness late in the week fits that story — the most rate-sensitive names often feel yield pressure first. Manufacturing has held up, but consumer sentiment lags and mortgage rates sit at their highest levels since last August.

The surface read is constructive. Underneath, the market remains tech-dependent, macro-sensitive, and increasingly event-driven.

🔶 Semiconductors — Still the Engine

Semiconductors and memory remain the clearest expression of the current risk-on trade. Recent earnings reactions across infrastructure and hardware names have kept the AI narrative alive even as other groups rotate more slowly.

This is not about calling a top. The better question is what would need to break for the regime to change. As long as this group leads, index-level weakness may stay limited. If it falters, the unwind could matter more than usual because so much upside has been concentrated here.

Looking at SMH on the all-expiry GEX profile, the structure still looks supportive — but also extended.

Price is trading around 598.93, just above 592.5, where HVL is. That makes the 592 area the nearest meaningful reference zone. Holding above it keeps the short-term semis structure intact. Losing it would shift attention much faster toward the next major put-side anchor at 550 P1, with a relatively wide gap between those levels.

Overhead, the call-side structure is clearly stacked:

• 620 — C3 + nCV

• 620 - 650 area — strong positive call-side cluster

• 650 — C1 — primary call wall and upper reaction zone

SMH is not sitting below resistance trying to reclaim structure. It has already moved through a sharp advance and is now trading beneath a dense call ladder between 620 and 650. That keeps the tone constructive, but it also means reactions become more likely as price approaches that zone.

The vol backdrop matters here too. IVRank is 91.1, IVx is 51.6%, and the implied move is roughly ±0.3%. Call pricing skew at 21.3% suggests upside participation remains active. The longer-dated skew also turns more call-heavy, which fits the current chase into AI and semiconductor leadership — but it also raises the bar for continuation.

Broadcom on Wednesday is the week’s key single-stock event — a read on AI infrastructure demand and whether leadership can extend after a long run. A strong reaction supports the broader tape; a disappointment would matter given elevated expectations.

🔶 VIX and the June Event Window

The VIX remains in the mid-teens while stocks grind higher. Low IV can extend trends, but it also means the market has not yet repriced the next layer of risk. With premiums sliding and positioning stretched, surprises may matter more than they have over the past several weeks.

This week is the on-ramp into a much denser mid-June cluster: CPI on June 10, the expected SpaceX IPO around June 12, FOMC on June 17, and monthly OPEX on June 18 — one of the largest expirations of the year. Near-term, markets will also watch manufacturing data, consumer confidence, and Friday’s jobs report.

That does not mean volatility must spike immediately. It does mean the tape may become more sensitive as this window tightens — especially with crude inventories low and energy supply shock still a macro tail risk.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Call Stack Overhead, But Put Skew Is Extremely Low

For this week’s June 5 expiration, SPX is starting from an extended but still structurally supported position.

Price is currently trading around 7603, clearly above the HVL and 7550 P1 put wall and the nearby 7515–7535 put cluster. That keeps the near-term downside map defined below spot — but the index is no longer below resistance trying to reclaim structure. It has already moved to fresh highs and is now pressing into the 7650–7700 call-side stack.

The profile shows a dense call concentration overhead, with less immediate put-side structure directly beneath price. That creates a constructive but increasingly sensitive setup: upside can continue, but reactions become more likely as SPX interacts with major call walls.

Key levels from the current structure:

• P2: 7515

• P1: 7550

• C1: 7625

• C2: 7650

The options panel shows IVRank at 29.4 and IVx at 13.7% — vol is not stretched at the index level. More importantly, the Options Oscillator annotation flags very low put pricing skew, meaning traders are not paying much for downside protection even as SPX sits near highs.

That does not make the setup automatically bearish. Low skew can coexist with a grind higher. But it does mean the market has less downside cushion than it would in a more balanced positioning environment.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Holding Above P1 Opens the Call Stack

The upside scenario depends on whether SPX can hold above the HVL and 7550 P1 area while accepting into the 7625 C1 zone.

As long as price remains above 7550, the broader near-term structure stays supported. For continued upside, the more important test is whether SPX can hold above 7625 C1 and work toward 7700 C2.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Rejection From 7650–7700 Would Shift Focus to P1

The downside scenario starts with a failure to hold the current call-stack test.

Because SPX is already trading near 7603, the first level to watch on weakness is whether price rejects from 7650–7700 and moves back below 7550 P1.

From there, the next downside references are 7515 P2.

The downside map is:

• First warning: rejection from 7650–7700 call stack

• First support / put reference: 7550 P1

• Next cluster: 7515–7535

• Deeper weakness: structure becomes more reactive if the 7550 area fails to hold

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

The SPX structure is still constructive, but also extended.

The index has continued to push higher, vol remains relatively compressed, and price is pressing into a major call-side stack between 7650 and 7700. At the same time, put pricing skew is extremely low — a sign of optimism, not balanced hedging.

The key near-term zone is 7550 HVL and P1.

Above it, the path of least resistance can still point toward 7650 and 7700.
Below it, the market may need to rebuild before the upside structure can recover.

Put ratio spreads can work well when elevated IV, skew, and GEX context align ahead of an event — but the edge often comes from vol contraction and controlled price behavior after the catalyst, not from predicting the exact post-earnings path. Structure matters on the way in, and disciplined profit-taking matters on the way out.

The S&P 500 moved higher again last week and closed its eighth straight weekly gain, the longest winning streak since 2023. On the surface, the message remains constructive: buyers continue to support the tape, volatility has drifted lower, and risk appetite remains firm.

But the internal setup is more nuanced.

The rally has become increasingly call-heavy, protective hedging has faded meaningfully since March, and traders appear to be leaning further into upside exposure rather than preparing for downside volatility. That does not mean the rally has to fail. Strong markets can stay strong for longer than expected.

But it does mean the market is entering the week with less downside protection than it had two months ago.

🔶Big Picture Market Context

Last week’s biggest single-stock event was NVIDIA earnings, released Wednesday after the close. The company beat expectations on both revenue and earnings and raised its second-quarter outlook.

Normally, that type of report would be expected to reinforce the AI trade.

But despite the strong numbers, NVIDIA shares finished the week lower.

That reaction is important because it shows how high expectations had become. In crowded leadership names, good news often needs to be very good to keep the same momentum alive. The broader market handled the reaction well, however, with capital appearing to rotate into other semiconductor names and broader Mag7 exposure.

In other words, NVIDIA weakness did not break the AI trade.

It simply shifted the leadership mix.

The broader index structure still looks supported by technology, semiconductors, mega-cap growth, and higher-beta names where volume has started to return. But this also means the market remains dependent on the same leadership groups that have driven most of the upside.

That creates a familiar tension: the trend is still strong but the positioning is less balanced.

Below is the SMH’s (Semiconductor ETF) daily chart showing a double top but still being above HVL and the highest call volume was on 600 Friday which is pretty OTM from these levels. IV and call skew has been decreasing lately.

🔶Options Positioning: The Rally Is Call-Heavy

One of the most important changes since March is the decline in protective hedging.

The S&P 500 is now much less hedged than it was two months ago, while upside call exposure has become more dominant. Current S&P 500 put skew sits near the lowest level in a year.

That is a very clear message from the options market.

Traders are not primarily paying up for downside protection.

They are still leaning into upside exposure.

This does not make the setup automatically bearish. Call-heavy markets can continue to grind higher, especially when spot remains above key structure and dealer hedging supports momentum.

But it does make the market more sensitive to disappointment.

When everyone is positioned for continuation, the tape can become more fragile if momentum slows, leadership weakens, or volatility starts to reprice.

The important takeaway is not that the rally must reverse. The better takeaway is that the market has less room for disappointment than it had earlier in the move.

🔶 SPX GEX Structure — Positive Gamma, But Near Call-Side Resistance

For this week’s May 29 expiration, SPX is starting from a structurally supportive position.

Price is currently trading around 7528, clearly above the HVL at 7400. That keeps SPX in a positive gamma environment, where price action is generally more controlled and volatility tends to stay more contained compared to a below-HVL regime.

The current profile shows positive net gamma and a supportive structure, with SPX trading near the upper side of the call cluster. The most important immediate reference zone is the 7500–7525 area, where price is already interacting with major call-side positioning.

Please also note how big of a difference there is between upside call cluster and downside put cluster.

Key levels from the current structure:

• HVL: 7400

• P1: 7425

• C3: 7500

• C1: 7530

• C2: 7600

The important point is that SPX is no longer sitting below resistance and trying to reclaim structure. It has already moved above HVL and is now pressing into the strongest near-term call wall area. Also important to note that on last Friday it made another all time high.

That makes the structure constructive, but also more sensitive to reactions near the current zone. A positive gamma regime can support a controlled grind higher, but call walls are still important reaction zones, especially when price is already extended into them.

The next major upside reference is 7600, which stands out as the next call-side level above the market.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Holding Above the Call Cluster Opens 7600

The upside scenario depends on whether SPX can hold above the 7500–7525 call cluster.

As long as price remains above HVL at 7400, the broader structure stays supportive. But for continued upside, the more important short-term test is whether SPX can accept above the current call-wall zone around 7530.

If buyers can hold price above this area, the next upside reference becomes 7600, which is currently marked as C2.

That 7600 level could act as a magnet if momentum continues, but it should also be treated as a reaction zone rather than a guaranteed target. In positive gamma, moves can grind higher in a more controlled way, but upside can also slow as price approaches large call-side concentrations.

In simple terms:

SPX above 7400 HVL keeps the regime supportive.
SPX holding above 7500–7525 keeps the short-term upside structure alive.
The next major upside reference is 7600.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Losing 7500 Would Shift Focus Back to HVL

The downside scenario starts with a failure to hold the current call cluster.

Because SPX is already trading near 7528, the first level to watch is the 7500–7525 zone. If price rejects from this area and moves back below 7500, the market may start to retest lower structural support.

The first downside reference is P1 at 7425, followed closely by the HVL at 7400.

That 7425–7400 area is the key downside regime zone.

As long as SPX remains above HVL, weakness can still be viewed as a pullback inside a supportive positive gamma structure. But if price loses 7400, the structure would become more fragile because SPX would move out of the current positive gamma regime and into a more reactive environment.

That would increase the risk of wider intraday swings and faster volatility expansion.

Please note that it is also rare that P1 is above HVL, the GEX profile is a bit irregular for this Friday’s expiration.

The downside map is:

• First warning: failure back below 7500

• First support / put reference: 7425 P1

• Regime line: 7400 HVL

• Below HVL: structure becomes more fragile

The most important risk signal would be a failed breakout above the call cluster, followed by a move back below 7425–7400. That would suggest the supportive structure is weakening and the market may need to rebuild lower.

🔶What We Are Watching This Week

This week is less about whether the market is “bullish” or “bearish” and more about whether the structure can continue to absorb risk.

The main areas to watch are:

1. Can the S&P 500 build on momentum after eight weekly gains?
The trend remains strong, but extended winning streaks make positioning more important.

2. Does volatility stay compressed in a shortened week?
Holiday weeks often bring lower volatility, but thin liquidity can also create sharper reactions around data.

3. Does AI leadership broaden or narrow?
NVIDIA finished lower despite strong earnings, but the broader market rotated rather than broke. That rotation needs to continue.

4. Do semiconductors hold their flag structures?
SMH and high-beta chip names remain central to the broader risk-on trade.

5. Does macro data challenge the soft-landing narrative?
GDP revisions, core PCE, jobless claims, and durable goods all matter because the market is entering the week with less hedging.

6. Do Iran headlines continue to calm energy pressure?
A stable ceasefire backdrop can support risk assets by reducing oil and inflation anxiety. Any renewed escalation would change that quickly.

Last week, the S&P 500 pushed to another record high and briefly cleared the 7,500 area, even though CPI and PPI came in hotter than expected. But Friday’s close changed the tone slightly.

After weeks of persistent upside momentum, several major indexes and leadership groups began testing short-term trend support. That does not automatically mean the market is rolling over, but it does make this week more important.

The key question is no longer simply whether the market can make another high.

The better question is whether the structure can absorb a very crowded event week without volatility expanding in a more meaningful way.

This week, the market has three major forces to process:

• rising Treasury yields and a more hawkish rates backdrop

• geopolitical and oil-related inflation pressure

• NVIDIA earnings, which may be the most important single-stock event for the broader tape

Sentiment is stretched, upside call demand has been aggressive, semiconductors have been a major driver of the rally, and implied volatility has started to rise even as spot prices remain near highs.

That is not a bearish signal by itself. But it is a sign that the market is pricing a more unstable environment than the index level alone would suggest.

🔶Big Picture Market Context

The broader trend is still intact.

Major indexes remain above their intermediate-term moving averages, and leadership has not collapsed. Technology remains firm, semiconductors continue to be one of the most important areas of strength, and large-cap AI names are still carrying a major part of the index.

But underneath the surface, the tape is becoming more selective.

Small caps have started to lag more clearly. Rate-sensitive sectors have struggled. Gold has weakened as yields and the dollar firmed. Energy has remained supported because oil is still elevated, but the market’s attention appears to be shifting away from oil as the only concern.

The bigger issue now may be rates.

The 10-year yield pushed above a key area last week, and the 30-year yield also remains under close watch. That matters because higher yields affect multiple parts of the market at once: equity valuations, housing, consumer pressure, financing costs, and risk appetite.

The recent move in Treasury yields is important because it changes the way investors price risk. When yields move higher, the market has to reassess the relative attractiveness of equities, especially the most expensive and momentum-driven parts of the market.

A market can often ignore one pressure point.

It becomes harder when higher oil, hotter inflation, stronger yields, a firmer dollar and crowded tech positioning all appear at the same time.

That is why this week should be viewed less as a simple “bullish or bearish” setup, and more as a volatility test.

🔶SPX - Negative Gamma Environment

For this week’s May 22 expiration, SPX is starting the week in a more fragile position than last week. The key difference is location.

Price is currently trading below the High Volatility Level, with HVL sitting around 7445. That places SPX in a negative GEX environment, where price action can become more reactive and less stable compared to the calmer above-HVL regime.

At the time of this premarket read, SPX is trading near the 7375 area. That puts price below HVL, but still close to an important short-term gamma zone around 7400, which currently stands out as the highest absolute gamma level (Ab1).

That 7400 area may become an important reaction zone if price tries to recover early in the week.

The main upside structure is concentrated above current price, with the strongest call-side magnet and resistance zone around 7500. This level stands out across multiple metrics, including net GEX, call open interest, total open interest, and absolute gamma.

In other words, 7500 is not just a random round number. It is currently one of the most important upside reference points in the SPX structure.

Above that, the next call-side levels are clustered around:

• 7500 — C1 / major call wall

• 7525 — C2

• 7550 — C3

On the downside, the near-term put structure is much closer to spot. The most relevant lower cluster is around 7350–7360, with P3 near 7350 and P2 near 7360. That zone is important because price is already trading close to it in premarket.

Further below, the largest put-side level is lower at 7300, which is currently P1.

This means the first downside test is nearby, but if that area fails to hold, the profile may leave more room for volatility expansion.

🟢Upside Scenario

The bullish scenario starts with SPX reclaiming HVL.

As long as price remains below 7445, the market is still technically operating inside negative GEX territory. That does not mean SPX must go lower, but it does mean rallies can be less stable and more vulnerable to rejection.

A clean move back above HVL would improve the structure.

If SPX can reclaim and hold above 7445, the market may attempt to move back toward the main upside call cluster. The first major area to watch would be 7500, which currently stands out as the dominant call wall and one of the strongest confluence levels on the board.

That 7500 area could act as a magnet if buyers regain control, but it may also become a reaction zone as price approaches it.

Above 7500, the next upside references are 7525 and 7550. These levels create a call-side ladder above the market, but the most important level remains 7500 because of the concentration of call open interest, total open interest, net GEX, and strong absolute gamma.

In simple terms: if SPX reclaims HVL, the structure opens the door for a move back toward 7500.

But for that move to be more than just a bounce, price likely needs to hold above HVL and avoid falling back into the negative GEX zone.

🔴Downside Scenario

The downside scenario is already in play as long as SPX remains below HVL.

With price near 7375 premarket, the first important downside area is not far away. The 7350–7360 zone stands out as a nearby put cluster, with P2 and P3 concentrated in that area.

This zone may act as the first support or reaction area if weakness continues early in the week.

However, the bigger risk is what happens if that nearby put cluster fails.

Because SPX is already below HVL and the broader profile is negative GEX, a break below the 7350–7360 area could create a more unstable tape. In a negative GEX environment, selling pressure can become more self-reinforcing, especially if traders start hedging downside exposure more aggressively.

The deeper downside reference is 7300, which currently stands out as P1.

That does not mean SPX has to move there. It simply means that the largest put-side structure is lower than current price. If near-term support fails and volatility expands, the market may have more room to move than it had in last week’s more supportive structure.

So the downside map is:

• first test: 7350–7360

• regime line above: 7445 HVL

• deeper put-side reference: 7300

The most important warning sign would be a failed attempt to reclaim HVL, followed by a break below the nearby 7350–7360 put cluster.

🔹What the Current SPX Structure Tells Us

The SPX structure is more defensive this week.

Last week, the market was still operating from a stronger upside position, with bullish momentum and call-side structure helping support the rally. This week, the setup is different.

SPX is starting below HVL, inside negative GEX territory, with price already close to a nearby put cluster.

That makes the first part of the week especially important.

If buyers can push SPX back above 7445, the structure may stabilize and allow the index to work back toward the 7500 call wall. But if price remains below HVL and starts losing the 7350–7360 area, the market could become more sensitive to downside acceleration.

The key level is HVL.

Above it, the structure becomes more constructive.

Below it, the market remains vulnerable to wider intraday swings and faster downside responses.

This is exactly why this week’s SPX setup should not be viewed only through price levels. The location of price relative to HVL matters just as much as the levels themselves.

Right now, SPX is not broken.

But it is no longer in the same clean bullish structure that supported the prior rally.

🔶NVIDIA Earnings: The Main Event

The biggest event this week is NVIDIA earnings after the close on Wednesday, May 20.

This is not just a single-stock earnings report.

NVIDIA has become one of the central names behind the AI trade, the semiconductor rally, and the broader mega-cap growth story. Because of its weight, its correlation with other AI and semiconductor names, and the amount of options activity around it, the report has the potential to influence the entire market.

Expectations are very high.

The market is looking for continued strength in data center demand, Blackwell momentum, AI infrastructure spending, margin strength, and forward guidance. Investors will also pay attention to supply constraints, China exposure, hyperscaler demand, and whether the capex cycle remains strong enough to support the broader AI narrative.

The problem is not simply that expectations are high. The problem is that positioning is also very bullish.

NVIDIA has already rallied sharply from its March lows, and traders have continued to chase upside through calls which can also be seen in high IV. That creates a market where good news may need to be very good to keep the same momentum alive.

If NVIDIA delivers and guidance remains strong, it could reinforce the AI leadership trade and support semiconductors, QQQ, and the broader index structure.

But if the reaction disappoints, even slightly, the unwind could matter because so much bullish exposure is already built into the setup.

🔶Options Market: Calls Are Expensive, Volatility Is Rising

One of the most interesting parts of this setup is what the options market is showing.

Upside calls have become extremely expensive relative to downside puts in both SPX and QQQ. That type of skew profile suggests traders are still paying aggressively for upside exposure, not just protection.

In other words, this is not a fearful options market in the traditional sense.

It is a market where traders are chasing upside while also starting to pay more for volatility.

That combination can become unstable.

Normally, when an index pushes higher, implied volatility tends to fall. Over the past week, however, implied volatility moved higher alongside spot in SPY, QQQ, SMH and NVDA. This “spot up, vol up” behavior is unusual and important.

It suggests that traders are no longer treating the rally as a calm grind higher.

They are paying up for optionality while price is still near highs.

🔶Semiconductors and AI Leadership

Semiconductors remain one of the most important areas to watch.

The group has been a major engine behind the broader rally, and many semiconductor and memory-related names have benefited from aggressive upside call activity. That type of positioning can create a powerful feedback loop.

When traders buy out-of-the-money calls, market makers who are short those calls may need to buy stock as price rises (gamma squeeze). That hedging flow can help push names higher and create a self-reinforcing move.

This has been one of the important forces behind the AI and semiconductor rally.

But that also means the group needs to keep holding its structure.

If semiconductors continue to consolidate above short-term support, they can help stabilize the broader market. If they start losing trend support after NVIDIA earnings, the same positioning that helped the group higher could become a source of faster downside pressure.

For this reason, SMH, NVDA, AMD, MU, AMAT and the broader memory/AI complex should stay near the top of the watchlist this week.

There is a pretty high level of confluence on the price level at 500 which is also the highest Put wall (P1) and highest absolute GEX (Ab1).

🔶 Upcoming Earnings — Names We’re Watching

While NVIDIA will dominate the week, retail earnings should not be ignored.

Walmart, Home Depot, Target and Lowe’s can provide useful information about the consumer, pricing power, household spending, and the impact of higher rates.

This matters because the market is still trying to answer a bigger question:

Is the economy strong enough to absorb higher-for-longer rates and sticky inflation?

If retail earnings show that the consumer is still holding up, it could support the soft-landing narrative and help offset some macro concerns.

If guidance weakens or companies start pointing to more pressure on lower-income consumers, that could become a different kind of risk for the market.

The consumer has not been the main driver of the current rally.

But if rates stay high, mortgage pressure increases, and inflation remains sticky, consumer weakness could become a more important market theme later.

Monday: BIDU

Tuesday: HD

Wednesday: TGT, LOW, NVDA

Thursday: WMAT, ZM

🔶The Tanuki Angle

The market still looks strong on the surface.

But strong markets can become more fragile when positioning gets one-sided.

The bullish trend has not disappeared. Technology is still leading. Semiconductors are still central. NVIDIA remains the most important AI bellwether. But the options market is no longer showing a calm, low-volatility grind higher.

Calls are expensive. Implied volatility is rising. Event risk is concentrated. Rates are moving higher. Oil remains elevated. And the market is entering the week after a long stretch of upside momentum.

This is exactly the type of environment where structure matters.

GEX levels can help identify where the market may remain controlled, where dealers may dampen movement, and where a break can create faster expansion. But this week, the key will be to combine those levels with the broader event map.

1. A level is not a prediction.

2. A call wall is not a guaranteed ceiling.

3. An HVL is not a trading signal by itself.

The real value comes from understanding how the market is positioned before the catalyst hits.

This week, that catalyst is NVIDIA and if TNX keeps going higher.

🔶 Case Study — AVGO Jade Lizard

This week’s case study looks at a Broadcom Jade Lizard options strategy opened in a neutral-to-bullish environment above HVL.

At entry, AVGO was holding above its High Volatility Level, with key put-side levels below price. That allowed the downside breakeven to be placed near an important support area, while the Jade Lizard structure removed upside risk if the stock continued higher.

The setup had positive delta, positive theta, and negative vega — a structure built for modest upside, time decay, and stable-to-lower volatility.

But a few days later, the environment changed. AVGO moved back below HVL, the GEX profile weakened, and the broader tech sector came under pressure. Even though the trade had not reached the original downside danger zone, the reason for staying in the position had changed.

The trade was closed early for about $120 profit, roughly a 50% capture of the original credit.

The lesson: structure is not only for entries. It is also for exits.

When the market regime changes, protecting a good trade can be more important than trying to squeeze out the last dollar.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed last week in bullish fashion, with both indices pushing into new all-time highs. The surface message is simple: the tape is strong.

But the structure underneath is getting more crowded.

This rally is still being driven mainly by tech, semiconductors, AI-related names, and mega-cap growth. That leadership can keep the indices supported longer than many traders expect — but it also makes the market more dependent on the same group of names.

Dow participated, but still lagged the record-high move. Small caps also underperformed, which is another reminder that this is not a broad, evenly distributed rally.

The market is strong, but the leadership is narrow.

That is the main tension this week.

After six bullish weeks, bearish traders have clearly felt the pain. Pullbacks have been shallow, volatility has compressed, and call demand in tech-heavy names remains aggressive. This can create powerful continuation, especially when dealer hedging and 0DTE flows amplify the move.

But strength and good location are not the same thing.

When price moves vertically and everyone crowds into the same upside narrative, the market becomes more sensitive to changes in positioning, volatility, and leadership quality.

This week adds another layer: CPI, PPI, retail sales, monthly OPEX, and the lead-up into Nvidia earnings next week.

Strong tape, crowded structure, cheap vol. Great for trend — until something changes.

🔶 VIX — Low IV Before a Big Event Window

Index volatility continues to sit at low levels while stocks grind higher.

That is not automatically bearish.

Low volatility can help trends extend. When price remains above key structure and dips keep getting absorbed, the market can continue to behave in a controlled, grind-like way.

But low IV does not mean low risk.

Sometimes it simply means the market has not yet been forced to reprice the risk.

This week matters because we are heading into a dense event window:

– CPI on Tuesday
– PPI on Wednesday
– Retail Sales on Thursday
– Monthly OPEX on Friday
– Nvidia earnings next week

The key question is whether volatility stays compressed through these events — or whether post-OPEX positioning and inflation data start to change the character of the tape.

🔶 Semiconductors — Still the Engine

Semiconductors remain the clearest expression of the current risk-on trade.

AMD reinforced the AI and data-center narrative last week, while NVDA continued to move higher even without reporting. The broader semi complex has been one of the strongest areas of the market, and that matters because the indices are increasingly tied to this leadership group.

This is not about calling a top in semis.

The better question is:

What would need to break for the current regime to change?

As long as semiconductors keep leading, index-level weakness may stay limited.

But if this group starts to lose momentum, the broader market could become much more vulnerable — especially because so much recent upside performance has been concentrated in the same trade (ie. SNDK, MU, etc).

The risk is not that the market is strong. The risk is that too much of the strength is coming from the same place.

🔶 Gamma Squeeze — When Call Demand Becomes Fuel

The recent rally has not been driven only by traditional equity buying.

Aggressive call demand, especially in tech and semiconductor names, has likely helped accelerate the move. When traders pile into calls near key strikes, dealer hedging can reinforce upside momentum and turn a strong tape into a reflexive one.

This does not mean the move is fake. It means the structure can become self-reinforcing.

Momentum attracts call buyers.
Call buying forces hedging.
Hedging pushes price higher.
Higher prices force more shorts to cover.

That loop can keep running longer than expected.

But the same structure can also become fragile if call demand fades, leadership weakens, or volatility starts to reprice.

That is why this week is less about predicting a top and more about watching whether the structure still supports the move.

🔶 SPX - Positive Gamma, Call Clusters Above

Looking at the May 15 weekly expiration, SPX is still trading clearly above HVL, which keeps the index in a positive gamma / lower-volatility regime for now.

The main upside reference is:

– 7500 → C1 / primary call wall

This is also a major psychological round number, so it becomes an important reaction zone if the rally continues.

Below that, the call structure is already active around the 7400 area, where Friday’s strongest call volume appeared. That is important because while 7500 is the largest call gamma wall, 7400 showed the most active call-side trading.

So the upside structure is not just one level.

It is more of a call-gamma zone between roughly 7400 and 7500.

On the downside, the key regime line is now HVL:

– HVL: 7295
– P1: 6900
– P2: 7300
– P3: 6800

This means the immediate downside structure is less about a nearby put wall and more about whether SPX can stay above HVL.

It is also important to see how small Put GEX levels are compared to Call.

As long as SPX remains above HVL, the structure stays supportive. If it loses HVL, the market would likely need to reprice, and the put-side structure may shift as new hedging activity appears.

There is still an important confluence around 7000, where several secondary metrics line up:

– highest put open interest
– highest call open interest
– highest absolute open interest
– highest positive delta exposure
– technical support relevance

Even though the current P1 has shifted to 6900, the 7000 area remains a major structural reference if the pullback becomes deeper.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Continuation Toward the Call Cluster

As long as SPX holds above HVL, the positive gamma structure remains intact.

In this regime:

– volatility tends to stay more contained
– pullbacks are more likely to be absorbed
– price action can remain controlled and grind-like

The first major upside area is the 7400 call-volume zone, followed by the 7500 C1 call wall.

The 7500 level is especially important because it combines the primary call wall with a major round-number reference. If momentum continues, that area could act as a magnet or reaction zone.

The key point is simple:

Above HVL, the market still has a supportive structure.

But as price moves closer to the 7400–7500 call cluster, reactions become more likely.

🔴 Downside Scenario — Losing HVL Opens the Door to Repricing

The downside scenario starts if SPX loses HVL around 7295.

That would be important because it would not just be a normal pullback. It could mark a shift from positive gamma into a more reactive volatility environment.

Around HVL, the first logical downside reference is:

– 7300 → P2

After that, the next major structural references are much lower:

– 6900 → P1 / primary put wall
– 6800 → P3

Because P1 has shifted down to 6900, there is now a relatively large air pocket between the HVL area and the major put-wall support below.

That does not mean price must fall into that zone.

But if HVL breaks, the current put-side structure may need to reprice quickly, and new downside gamma levels could emerge as traders add protection.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

Right now, the SPX picture is still supportive.

Price is above HVL, the market remains in positive gamma, and the upside call structure is clearly defined between 7400 and 7500.

But the most important line is now clearly:

HVL around 7295.

As long as that level holds, the structure favors controlled continuation or consolidation above key support.

If it breaks, the downside map becomes more fragile, because the main put-wall support is now much lower around 6900, with 7000 acting as an important confluence and technical reference along the way.

🔶 QQQ — Stronger Extension, Key Support at HVL/P1

Looking at the May 15 weekly expiration, QQQ remains above HVL, which keeps the structure in a positive gamma regime for now.

But compared to SPX, the Nasdaq structure looks more extended and more parabolic.

That does not invalidate the trend. It simply means location matters even more here.

On the upside, the call structure is clearly stacked above price:

– 725 → C1 / primary call wall
– 720 → C2
– 715 → C3

This creates a well-defined upside call-gamma ladder between 715 and 725.

Friday’s flow was active around the current price area and slightly below, especially around 710–705. Unlike SPX, however, this was not purely call-dominated. Put volume was also meaningful around these levels, suggesting that traders were not only chasing upside but also adding protection into the move.

The most important level is 700.

That zone combines several key elements:

– HVL
– P1 / primary put wall
– second-largest absolute gamma value
– strongest put volume for Friday’s expiration

That makes 700 the key regime line for QQQ this week.

Below that:

– 695 → P3
– 690 → P2

🟢 Upside Scenario — Positive Gamma Continuation

As long as QQQ holds above 700, the structure remains supportive.

In positive gamma:

– volatility tends to stay more contained
– pullbacks are more likely to be absorbed
– price action can continue to grind higher

The upside path is clearly defined:

– 715 → C3
– 720 → C2
– 725 → C1 / primary call wall

If momentum continues, these levels can act as reaction zones or upside magnets, especially while QQQ remains above HVL.

The key point is that tech leadership is still intact.

As long as QQQ holds above 700 and the call-side structure remains active, the current regime can continue — even if the chart looks stretched.

🔴 Downside Scenario — 700 Break Changes the Structure

The downside scenario starts if QQQ loses 700.

That level matters because it is not just HVL. It is also P1 and a major confluence zone for this weekly expiration.

A break below 700 would suggest a potential shift out of the current positive gamma regime and into a more reactive volatility environment.

Below that, the next downside references are:

– 695 → P3
– 690 → P2

That said, if QQQ starts accepting below HVL, the structure may reprice quickly. New put-side levels could emerge as traders add protection and dealers adjust hedges.

So the current downside map is useful, but the bigger message is simpler:

700 is the line that defines the regime.

Above it, QQQ remains structurally supported.

Below it, the market may need to rebuild the downside map.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

QQQ still shows a supportive GEX structure, but it is more extended than SPX.

The upside is defined by the 715–725 call wall zone, while the downside regime line is very clear at 700.

Friday’s flow also showed more two-sided activity than SPX, with meaningful put volume appearing near the current structure. That does not make the setup bearish, but it does suggest that traders are starting to hedge more actively into the parabolic move.

Right now, the map is clean:

above 700 → positive gamma continuation toward the call cluster

below 700 → regime shift risk and possible repricing toward 695–690

QQQ remains one of the clearest expressions of the current tech-led rally — but because it is also more stretched, the 700 HVL/P1 zone becomes especially important this week.

🔶 Upcoming Earnings — Names We’re Watching

Earning season is winding down, but there are still some names worth watching.

Monday: MARA, PLUG

Tuesday: OKLO, BABA

Thursday: AMAT

Earnings season is slowing down, but there are still a few important names on deck.

AMAT is probably the most relevant from a broader market perspective because semiconductors remain the engine of the current rally. If the market is still leaning into AI infrastructure and chip-related leadership, AMAT can help confirm whether that narrative still has momentum.

Alibaba is also worth watching from a China-tech and global risk perspective, while MARA, PLUG, and OKLO remain more speculative / thematic names where volatility can stay elevated around earnings.

🔶 OPEX — Why Friday Matters

Monthly OPEX can change the market’s internal structure.

Large options positions expire.
Dealer hedges adjust.
Gamma exposure can roll off.

If dealer positioning has helped stabilize price action during the rally, the post-OPEX environment may behave differently once those positions expire.

That does not mean volatility must return immediately.

But it does mean the market can become more sensitive to new information after Friday.

This is especially important because OPEX comes right before Nvidia earnings next week — one of the most important single-stock events for the AI trade.

🔶 The Tanuki Angle

This is not a market where the main edge comes from guessing the exact top.

The better framework is to watch the structure.

Is SPX holding above HVL?
Is QQQ still stronger than SPX?
Are semiconductors still leading?
Are call-side walls still supporting the tape?
Is volatility staying compressed?
Does the market behave differently after OPEX?

Right now, the trend remains strong.

But the rally is increasingly dependent on tech leadership, call demand, and a low-volatility environment.

That combination can keep working.

But if it starts to unwind, the shift can happen faster than most expect.

🔶 Case Study — AMD Jade Lizard

This week’s trade breakdown is an AMD Jade Lizard built around a potential bounce from a key put-support area.

The idea was to create a neutral-to-bullish structure that could benefit from sideways movement, a moderate bounce, and elevated implied volatility.

The trade:

– short 170 put
– short 210/215 call credit spread
– total credit received: 5.40
– downside breakeven around 165

AMD stabilized near support, the position opened up nicely, and the trade was closed early for around 25% of max credit.

Entry credit: 5.40
Exit debit: 4.00
Profit: 1.40

The key takeaway:

Jade Lizards can offer attractive risk/reward near major support in higher-IV environments, but the naked put component matters. Early profit-taking helped avoid holding the position too long as the risk profile could shift closer to expiration.

Mag 7 prints and semis mostly fed the AI narrative and helped the big indexes print new highs—while VIX sits about as low as it’s been in three months. Strong tape, cheap vol: great for trend until something breaks it.

🔶 VIX — What Cheap IV Actually Means Here

We already flagged it above: index IV is sitting near three-month lows. That is not a moral verdict on complacency—it is a positioning fact: trends can extend more easily when vol is cheap, but surprises (payrolls, oil headlines, a single broken leader like XLK) can still force fast repricing. Size for gap risk, especially into Friday.

🔶 Mega-Cap Tech — Quick Read on the Earnings Cluster

The big headline is boring but important: earnings mostly validated the AI demand story, especially when semis and hyperscalers guided with conviction. The pushback was narrower: META in particular reminded the market that capex intensity can dominate even good operating results, while MSFT / AMZN traded on the usual split between cloud/AI momentum and near-term spend / margin optics. GOOGL broadly stayed in the “AI distribution, not just AI story” bucket. Net: indices made new highs, but the tape is still pricing the bill, not just the vision.

🔶 SPX — Strong Trend, but First Signs of Exhaustion

Looking at the SPX on the daily chart, last week closed with a strong continuation to new highs — but Friday’s candle tells a slightly different story.

Compared to what we saw in NDX, the close was less convincing.
Price pushed higher, but the candle itself showed more hesitation than clean momentum.

That doesn’t invalidate the trend — but it does suggest that the move is starting to stretch.

From a positioning perspective, focusing on the May 8 expiration, the structure is still clearly supportive:

• HVL sits at 7195

• Price is currently above HVL → positive gamma regime

• The main upside reference is:

  • 7300 → C1 (primary call wall)

  • 7350 → C3 (upper extension zone)

On the downside:

• 7000 → P1 (primary put wall)

• Above it:

  • 7150 → P2

  • 7100 → P3

The distance between spot and the main put support (7000) is notable — it reflects a market that has been trending higher with relatively limited need for protection.

Flow data reinforces this.

Friday’s most dominant activity came from the call side:

• 7290 → strongest call volume

That’s very close to the current structure and aligns with the C1 area, suggesting active speculative positioning into the upside.

At the same time, downside hedging was present — mostly in the 6900–7000 range, but not dominant enough to change the structure.

🟢Upside Scenario — Continuation Within Positive Gamma

As long as price holds above HVL, the environment remains stable.

In positive gamma:

• dealers tend to dampen volatility

• price action becomes more controlled and grind-like

In this case, the structure is straightforward:

• HVL holds → continuation remains in play

• 7300 (C1) becomes the next logical target

• if momentum persists, price can extend toward 7350 (C3)

The key here is not prediction, but structure.

Call-side positioning is already building near these levels, and if the market continues to lean into that flow, it can act as a magnet rather than resistance — at least initially.

🔴Downside Scenario — Losing HVL Changes the Game

If price loses the HVL, the regime shifts.

Below HVL:

• volatility tends to expand

• dealer hedging becomes more reactive

• moves can accelerate more easily

In that scenario, attention shifts immediately to the put side:

• first levels to watch:

  • 7150 → P2

  • 7100 → P3

• then the major support:

  • 7000 → P1

The 7100 level stands out not just from a GEX perspective, but also technically — it aligns with prior structure and could act as the first meaningful test if the market pulls back.

The 7000 level (P1) is even more important.

It’s not just the largest put wall — it’s also a confluence zone, with:

• highest put open interest

• highest net put positioning

• highest absolute open interest

That combination makes it a structurally significant support area if the market transitions into a deeper pullback.

🔹 What the Current Structure Tells Us

Right now, the picture is simple:

• the trend is still intact

• positioning supports continuation

• but the last daily candle shows early signs of fatigue

That’s a combination worth respecting.

As long as HVL holds, the path of least resistance remains higher.

But if it breaks, the structure below is clearly defined — and in a lower volatility-to-higher volatility transition, reactions can become much faster than most expect.

🔶 QQQ — Stronger Tape, Cleaner Structure

Looking at QQQ on the same May 8 expiration, the picture is noticeably cleaner and stronger than what we saw in SPX.

The difference shows up immediately on the daily chart.

Friday’s candle closed with clear bullish intent — much stronger than SPX — which confirms that tech continues to carry the tape.

From a GEX perspective, the structure is well-defined.

On the upside:

• 680 → C1 (primary call wall)

• 675 → C2

• 685 → C3

Between 675 and 685, there is a clear call gamma cluster, visible both in the net GEX distribution and the flow data.

Friday’s flow confirms it:

• 675 → highest call volume

And this is not just a single level — it’s a high-confluence zone, where multiple positioning metrics align:

• absolute gamma

• C2 level

• largest net call OI

• highest call OI

• strongest call volume

• highest positive delta exposure

That concentration makes 675 a structurally important level, not just resistance, but a key reaction zone.

On the downside:

• 664 → HVL

• 650 → P2

• 645 → P1 (primary put wall)

• 635 → P3

The 645 level (P1) stands out as another major confluence zone.

Here, multiple elements align again:

• highest put open interest

• highest absolute open interest

• P1 (largest put wall)

• strongest put volume

• elevated absolute gamma

That makes the 644 area a strong support cluster if the market rotates lower.

🟢 Upside Scenario — Continuation Into Call Cluster

As long as QQQ holds above HVL (664), the structure remains supportive.

In this regime:

• volatility stays relatively contained

• price action tends to grind higher

The next logical upside path:

• 675 → first reaction zone (C2 / confluence level)

• 680 → C1 (primary target)

• extension toward 685 (C3) if momentum holds

Given the strong call-side flow into 675, this area can act as a magnet, especially if momentum continues from last week.

🔴 Downside Scenario — HVL Break and Rotation Lower

If price loses the HVL (664) and starts accepting below it, the structure shifts.

In that case, attention moves quickly to the put side:

• 650 → P2 (first reaction area)

• 645 → P1 (major support cluster)

The 650–645 zone becomes the key downside target.

This is where both positioning and flow suggest meaningful support could emerge.

🔹 What the Structure Tells Us

Compared to SPX, QQQ shows:

• stronger price action

• tighter, more defined gamma structure

• clearer confluence zones

Flow confirms the picture:

• call-side activity concentrated at 675

• put-side activity concentrated at 645

This creates a clean map:

• above HVL → controlled continuation toward call cluster

• below HVL → rotation into well-defined support

Right now, QQQ remains one of the clearest expressions of the current regime:

trend intact, structure supportive, and tech still leading.

🔶 Fed — Powell’s last meeting as Chair

The FOMC left the policy band unchanged at 3.5%–3.75%, but the headline was the vote: an 8–4 split—rare, noisy daylight between officials on what “steady” should mean in practice. Rate-wise, nothing moved; message-wise, Powell stayed in the data-dependent lane (no rush to cut while inflation still looks sticky vs target), but this was also treated as his last lap in the chair before the widely flagged handoff toward Kevin Warsh around mid-May.

At the presser he leaned hard into institutional risk: warned Fed independence is under unusual pressure, said he intends to stay on as a governor after the chair title ends, and that he’ll take Warsh at his word on defending the Fed from political interference. For risk assets that reads as: the button on rates didn’t change, but the uncertainty dial on leadership, credibility, and forward guidance just got turned up.

🔶 Case Study — MSFT: T+3 Calendar Into Weakness

This Microsoft setup is a good example of how to handle post-earnings volatility and short-term positioning.

After a roughly 12% gap down on earnings, implied volatility remained relatively elevated, and a short-term bounce scenario became plausible — not a full recovery, but a slow grind higher over a few days.

The structure used was a T+3 call calendar (Friday–Monday) around the 440 strike, combined with a hedge to control downside exposure.

The idea was simple:

– price stabilizes and drifts higher
– front-end IV compresses slightly
– calendar expands

When the bounce failed to hold and weakness returned, the calendars were closed early (0.37 → 0.57), effectively removing the upside exposure and flattening the risk profile.

That adjustment turned the remaining position into a free downside structure, where further weakness could still generate profit without meaningful risk.

The final exit came near expiration (~1.80), locking in profit while avoiding the risk of a late reversal erasing gains.

The key takeaway:

In fast post-earnings environments, calendars can work well — but only if managed actively. Scaling out early and removing exposure is often more important than holding for the “perfect” scenario.

This is a classic rotation pattern where capital shifts toward high-beta, growth-driven names while other sectors lag behind. It does not invalidate the rally but it does narrow it and should make us cautios.

Fewer sectors are participating, and more of the upside is being driven by a concentrated group of stocks, primarily within tech.

That creates an important dynamic: if the weaker sectors fail to stabilize, the market may struggle to extend the rally further.

At this stage:

• price action remains bullish

• participation is becoming more selective

• rotation is clearly in play

This combination is worth monitoring closely in the coming sessions, especially if momentum begins to slow.

🔶 SPX — Consolidation Resolved to the Upside

Looking at SPX on the daily timeframe, last week’s price action was defined by consolidation followed by a clean breakout.

From Monday through Thursday, the market moved sideways after the prior strong rally. Both Tuesday and Thursday saw attempts to push lower, and during those moves price filled the previous gap left open from the prior Friday.

That gap was tested twice — and both times the market failed to continue lower.

Instead, buyers stepped in consistently at those levels.

By Friday, this resolved into a strong breakout higher. Two failed breakdown attempts followed by a move higher is typically a sign of underlying strength, as supply gets absorbed without follow-through on the downside.

From a structural perspective, the trend remains intact.

🔹Key Levels (May 1 Expiration)

• 7200 → C1 (primary call wall)

• 7250 → C2 (next call resistance)

• 7175 → C3 (third highest call wall)

• 7100 → HVL (high volatility level)

• 6980 → P1 / P3 cluster (primary downside support zone)

Price is currently trading well above the HVL, which keeps the market in a positive gamma regime.

In this environment, the structure can be split into two scenarios: upside continuation above HVL, and downside transition if HVL breaks.

🟢 Upside Structure — Call Cluster Overhead

As long as price holds above the HVL, the market remains inside a positive call gamma cluster.

The 7200 level (C1) is the key reference. If price can break and hold above it, the next natural path is toward the call extension zone between C1 and C2, which sits around 7250.

7200 has by far the strongest GEX value on the whole GEX profile.

In strong momentum conditions, this is where price tends to move next, as positioning supports continuation rather than rejection.

The 7170 (C3) level also sits within this upper structure and can act as an intermediate step as the market pushes higher.

🔴 Downside Structure — Layered Put Support

If the HVL breaks, the structure can shift quickly.

Below HVL, the market moves into a higher volatility regime, where dealer hedging becomes more reactive and price moves can accelerate.

The first levels to watch on the downside are:

• 7100 → near-term support (P2 area, close to HVL)

• 6980 → strong put gamma cluster (P1 and P3 combined)

This 6980 zone stands out as the most meaningful support area, as multiple put gamma levels are concentrated in a tight range.

Look how miniscule these GEX walls are on the downside compared to call GEX walls on the upside.

If price loses HVL, the market will likely start interacting with these levels, and volatility typically increases in the process.

🔹Secondary metrics

7200 as C1 has a pretty high level of confluence from other option metrics like absolute gamma and open interest.

What we saw last week was a textbook continuation pattern:

• strong rally

• multi-day consolidation

• failed breakdown attempts

• breakout to new highs

This type of structure typically supports further upside — especially in a positive gamma environment.

At the same time, the market is now extended, and key levels like 7200 become increasingly important for determining whether momentum can continue or begins to stall.

🔶 QQQ — Relative Strength Remains Intact

Looking at QQQ on the daily timeframe, the structure is noticeably stronger compared to SPX.

While SPX spent several days consolidating and retesting lower levels, QQQ showed a much shallower pullback and absorbed the prior move more efficiently. The digestion phase was shorter and less volatile, which is typically a sign of underlying strength.

This aligns with what we saw on the sector level — tech continues to lead.

🔹Key Levels (May 1 Expiration)

• 675 → C1 (primary call gamma level)

• 655 → HVL (high volatility level)

• 635 → P1 (primary put gamma level)

Price is currently trading above the HVL and right around the C1 zone, placing QQQ firmly in a positive gamma environment near the upper end of the structure.

🔹Positioning and Flow

Friday’s flow data adds an interesting layer.

• The strongest call volume printed at 660

• The strongest put volume also printed at 660

Both sides concentrated activity at the same strike, slightly below the current price. This typically reflects high engagement around a key level, rather than directional conviction from one side.

Looking at confluence:

• 635 (P1) stands out as a major support zone:

  • highest put open interest

  • peak absolute open interest

  • second-strongest absolute GEX level

This creates a well-defined downside reference.

QQQ continues to show clear relative strength versus SPX.

• shallower consolidation

• faster continuation

• stronger positioning near highs

As long as price holds above HVL, the structure supports continuation toward higher call-side levels, including the 670 area.

If price moves back toward HVL, the key question will be whether that level holds — because below it, the structure would shift quickly into a more reactive environment.

🔶 Oil — Correlation Shift and Emerging Hedging Flow

One of the more interesting developments this week came from the oil market.

Up until recently, the relationship was fairly clear:

👉 when oil moved higher, equities tended to sell off

That negative correlation was driven by inflation expectations and macro risk repricing.

This week, that dynamic started to shift.

Both oil and equities were able to move higher at the same time — suggesting that, at least in the short term, the market is not treating energy strength as an immediate headwind for risk assets.

That’s a meaningful change in behavior.

🔹USO Structure (GEX Perspective)

Looking at USO on the weekly GEX profile:

• 135 → C1 (primary call gamma level)

• 129 → HVL

• 125 → P1 (primary put gamma level)

Price is currently trading above HVL, which keeps the structure in a positive gamma environment.

🔹Flow and Positioning

Friday’s flow data highlights a few key points:

• The strongest call volume appeared at 135, near current price

• The largest put volume printed at 122

More importantly:

• 125 holds the highest net GEX, aligning directly with P1

This makes 125 a particularly strong structural level, not just from a gamma perspective but also from positioning concentration.

Looking deeper into the detailed volume:

Below 125, put-side activity was noticeably stronger than call-side flow.

This suggests that hedging demand began to increase toward the end of the week.

In other words:

• earlier strength was driven by directional positioning

• later flow shows signs of protective behavior entering the market

🔶 NVDA — Breakout From a Major Gamma Cluster

Looking at Nvidia in the all-expiry GEX view, Friday’s move was a clean breakout from a key structural level.

Price pushed through the 200 level, which was the C1 on Friday — the highest call gamma concentration. This is typically where the strongest resistance sits, and once it breaks, it often triggers a momentum-driven move higher.

That’s exactly what happened here.

The stock is now trading in the positive GEX profile, right around the current C1 which is 210.

The next relevant levels:

• 220 → C3

• 200 → C2

These act as the next potential upside steps if momentum continues.

What makes the 200 level particularly important is the confluence behind it. This wasn’t just the largest call gamma level — it was also where:

• the highest call volume was concentrated

• the highest put volume was also present

• one of the strongest absolute GEX values sat

This kind of overlap usually signals heavy hedging and positioning activity, which makes the breakout more meaningful once that level is cleared.

Flow confirms the move.

Friday’s detailed volume was clearly call-dominated, pointing to both hedging unwind and speculative positioning on the upside. This aligns with the broader context, as Nvidia heads into earnings on May 20 — a period where these names often trend higher into the event.

At the same time, the downside structure is far below:

• HVL → 182

• P1 → 150

Which means there is currently very limited immediate hedging pressure below price.

The net GEX and flow data both support this — activity is heavily concentrated on the call side, with little evidence of defensive positioning at current levels. Look how low volume there was on the put side on Friday.

🔶 Macro & Earnings — Policy Stability, Event Risk Ahead

This week’s macro calendar is relatively straightforward, but still important.

Key data points include:

• Consumer Confidence

• PCE (inflation)

• FOMC meeting on Wednesday

The market is currently pricing a 100% probability that rates remain unchanged, so the decision itself is not the focus. What matters more is forward guidance.

This is expected to be Powell’s final meeting as Fed Chair, and there is growing attention around a potential transition to Kevin Warsh. A shift in leadership brings uncertainty — not necessarily in the immediate decision, but in how policy might be framed going forward.

That’s where volatility risk comes from.

On the earnings side, this is a heavy week with several key tech and macro-sensitive names reporting:

The catch is that the setup heading into Monday looks very different from the one that closed Friday.

The US–Iran ceasefire — which was always conditional on Hormuz reopening — started showing visible stress over the weekend, and that’s pushing oil-supply uncertainty and escalation risk back into the tape right as volatility was being priced out.

Friday began with Tehran signalling that the shipping lane was once again open, a headline that accelerated the drop in crude. By Sunday that stance had flipped. Iran reimposed the restrictions, pointing to the continued US naval blockade of its ports as justification.

President Trump confirmed the operation on Truth Social with a pointed “no more Mr. Nice Guy” line, and announced that a US delegation will travel to Islamabad on Monday for the next round of high-stakes negotiations — with the ceasefire itself scheduled to expire mid-week, and no broader nuclear or regional framework in place.

The market reaction into the cash open is a clean risk-off rotation:

• crude re-opening roughly 5% higher on the weekend news

• S&P futures trading modestly red

• inflation and energy-vol risk getting repriced in real time

🔶 The Mechanics Behind the Rally

Last week’s move was not just sentiment.

A significant portion of the grind higher was mechanical, driven by a heavy wave of OTM call buying on SPX and the hedging flow that forces on the other side of the trade.

Here is the dynamic:

When end-users buy calls, the dealers writing them are short gamma and short delta on that position. To stay neutral, they buy futures as a hedge.

As price moves up, those calls gain delta → dealers have to buy more futures → price lifts again → delta expands further → the buy program continues.

The result is a reflexive bid:

rally → dealer hedging → rally → more dealer hedging

That is the textbook footprint of a positive-gamma melt-up or squeeze, and it describes a good portion of last week’s action.

The important caveat is that this flow is symmetric.

If calls get sold back, IV re-expands, or downside demand shows up, the same mechanism reverses and in that case the hedging mechanisms stops cushioning price and starts pressing on it.

🔶 What Actually Drove the Week — Sector Rotation

The weekly sector tape tells the full story.

Money left defensives and moved directly into high-beta, tech-heavy exposure. That is the classic composition of a live risk-on regime.

• XLK (tech) — clear leader, carried the index

• Defensives (staples, utilities, healthcare) — consistent net outflows

• Energy / Oil — down roughly 12% on the week, hit by the rotation and by the temporary Hormuz de-escalation

The key detail: the move was tech-led, not breadth-led.

A narrow set of large caps did most of the work, which means the rally is more exposed than it looks to single-name earnings disappointments or a macro vol re-expansion.

🔶 SPX — Sitting Under a Dense Call Gamma Cluster

One detail worth highlighting on the path up: the market needed 21 days to bottom, and only 14 days to print a new all-time high.

Price rose faster than it fell.

That asymmetry almost always signals aggressive positioning adjustments, and it shows up clearly in the current gamma profile.

• 7300 → highest call open interest, defining the upper edge of the extension zone

The strongest Friday volume for the April 24 expiry concentrated around the 7200 strike — confirming alignment between flow, OI, and gamma.

Clusters like this typically behave as magnets in stable conditions, and as resistance if momentum weakens.

🔴 Downside Structure — Layered Put Support

• 7070 → HVL (regime boundary)

• 7050 area → P1, P2, P3 densely stacked

• 6500 → highest put open interest, well below spot

Note there is an unfilled gap between 6600 and 6750, sitting under HVL.

If HVL gives way and price enters that zone, there is limited structural friction until 6400.

🟢 What If Positive Gamma Holds?

Above 7070 (HVL) the market stays in a positive gamma regime:

• moves remain controlled

• vol stays suppressed

• dealer hedging dampens directional pressure

The key zone to watch overhead is the 7150 C1 cluster.

A clean break can open the positive extension toward 7300, where the OI anchor sits.

Without a fresh catalyst, this cluster is more likely to act as a ceiling than a launchpad.

🔴 If HVL Breaks → Negative Gamma Profile

Below 7070, the regime flips.

First real support: the 7040-50 P1–P3 cluster.

In negative gamma, dealer hedging stops stabilizing price and starts amplifying it — selling into weakness, buying into strength.

🔶 VIX — Another Leg Lower, Now Under 18

The volatility side reinforces the same story — but it’s also the part of the market that looks most stretched.

VIX dropped another ~10% on the week, closing below 18 for the first time in over a month.

That extends the broader decompression off the March 31 peak:

• early April: VIX >30 (elevated stress regime)

• mid-April: broke back below 20

• last week: another leg lower, now sub-18

That is exactly the setup that becomes fragile when a weekend headline like Hormuz lands.

What it means in practice:

🟢 If Vol Stays Suppressed

• positive gamma remains dominant

• index moves stay contained

• time spreads, calendars continue to work well

• short-premium structures can be held, but with tight risk controls

🔴 If Vol Re-Expands

• dealer hedging flips from supportive to amplifying

• SPX 7070 HVL becomes the critical line

• structures that benefit from a vol snap-back (debit verticals, ratio backspreads, directional butterflies) become more attractive

At current levels, VIX offers limited cushion.

A sub-18 print is a very different risk/reward profile than a 25–30 print — buying protection is cheaper, and selling premium is more exposed.

🔶 QQQ — Tech Still Leading, Thin Downside Structure

QQQ confirms the tech-led narrative.

Price is sitting near new highs, above HVL.

• 650 → C1 (primary call wall)

• 660 → highest call OI (upper edge of the call cluster)

• 644 → HVL = P1 (regime boundary and primary put wall aligned)

• 640 → P2

• 635 → P3

The key structural detail:

HVL and P1 are aligned at 644.

That means the regime boundary is the first real support — there is no pre-hedged buffer just below the market.

🟢 Positive Gamma Scenario

If QQQ holds above HVL, the next upside zone of interest is the 655 area (C3), with 660 as the structural OI anchor above.

Expect contained, choppy action rather than clean expansion — unless a catalyst forces a repricing.

🔴 Negative Gamma Scenario

A break below 625 is meaningful, because it breaks HVL and P1 in a single move.

Below that, the put structure is spread out:

• 644 → P1 (and HVL)

• 640 → P2

• 635 → P3

Also notable that right below the market, at 640 was the highest put volume on Friday.

These levels sit notably lower than current price, meaning a clean HVL break can trigger a fast move before finding the next real support.

🔶 Market Context — Why Time Spreads Make Sense Here

Important backdrop: we are printing all-time highs, with IV compressed aggressively across the curve.

This is the classic environment for time-spread structures:

• IV is low → long options are cheap relative to recent history

• front-month theta remains attractive

• controlled positive gamma favors non-directional or lightly directional setups

Favorable here:

• Calendars

• Diagonals

Less favorable:

• Debit verticals buying inflated directional exposure

• Short-premium structures that face an asymmetric vol re-expansion risk into Hormuz headlines

Case Study — SPX Call Diagonal (A blueprint for the current regime)

Diagonals are one of the most flexible structures in the current environment — low IV, positive gamma, price pushing into a dense call cluster overhead.

A good real-world example of how this structure behaves, and how to manage it, is a trade I walked through in a full video breakdown earlier this year.

The original trade was opened in a different regime (price testing major put support), but the mechanics and management logic transfer directly to the kind of setup we are looking at now — price sitting under a dense call wall at 7175, with IV compressed and positive gamma in control.

Why the structure fits this environment as well:

• Flat-delta by design → no need to guess direction

• Positive vega → cheap to carry when IV is compressed, pays if vol re-expands on a Hormuz headline

• Positive theta as long as the short strike stays out of the money

• Short strike placed above the call wall → structural rejection zone works for the position, not against it

The part of the trade that matters most — and the reason we wanted to share this one — is the scaling logic.

As the market moved in favor of the position, Gery stepped out in stages rather than holding the full size:

• 5/8 of the position sold for $1.45 credit → at this point the trade was already risk-free on the downside

• Another 1/8 sold for $1.80 credit (2x the original debit) → additional locked-in gains

• The remaining 2 contracts left open to run into expiration

Final P&L: +$185 on the trade. The headline number is not the point — the shape of the exposure is:

• gains locked in early

• tail risk removed

• upside exposure preserved for free

The general principle that carries into the current setup:

1. Build the position flat-delta — you are trading structure and vol, not direction.

2. Place the short leg against a structural level (call wall, HVL, put cluster) so the gamma map works with you.

3. Scale out mechanically into strength, not based on feeling — the goal is to make the position self-financing as fast as possible, then let the remainder run.

4. You will almost never scale out “enough” in hindsight. That’s fine. Optimizing for PnL is secondary; optimizing for repeatable process is what compounds.

In a regime like today’s — ATH, compressed IV, heavy call cluster above — this is exactly the type of structure that lets you participate without betting on a breakout, and without being short vol into a weekend headline risk.

This week is shaping up differently.

We’re at all-time highs, sitting just below a dense call gamma cluster, with a VIX that has priced out almost all of its recent risk premium — exactly as the geopolitical backdrop is trying to push volatility back in.

The question is not where the market goes. It’s whether positioning can absorb the next Hormuz headline without flipping the gamma regime.

Cash is a position.

So is patience.

On the surface, this looked like a clean shift back into risk-on.

Implied volatility compressed aggressively across all expirations, and the VIX dropped below 20 for the first time in four weeks — one of the largest single-day declines we’ve seen recently.

At the same time, the move was heavily supported by the tech sector.

AMZN rallied roughly 14%, META 10%, and NVDA around 6%, driving strong upside in QQQ and reinforcing short-term bullish sentiment.

However, the underlying macro narrative already started to shift again.

The fragile two-week US–Iran ceasefire — tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz for oil shipments — showed major cracks over the weekend, injecting fresh geopolitical uncertainty into markets ahead of Monday’s open. High-stakes face-to-face peace talks in Islamabad collapsed without a deal, with no resolution on Iran’s nuclear program, Israeli actions in Lebanon, or the critical shipping lane.

Adding to the tension, President Trump stated that the US Navy would immediately begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz, warning that forces remain “locked and loaded” if needed.

This puts oil, inflation expectations, and volatility back into focus right as the market was pricing stability.

But the key question is:

Was this a real regime shift — or just positioning unwinding?

🔶SPX — Positioning Is Still in Control

April 17 is not just a weekly expiry it is also the monthly OPEX and that is why it is significant.

Following last week’s rally, price is currently trading slight above the HVL (6760), placing the market in a positive gamma regime — at least for now.

In this environment, dealer hedging tends to stabilize price action and reduce volatility.

The next major upside levels sit at:

• 6900 → C1 (primary call wall)

• 6850 → C2 ( second highest call wall)

• 6875 → C3 (third highest call wall)

Above C1 there is the positive gamma extension zone, which is also a huge confluence level at 7000:

• the largest call positioning (open interest)

• the highest absolute exposure (absolute open interest)

• and the strongest recent volume (call volume)

all align at the same strike.

These zones often act as magnets in stable conditions — but can also turn into resistance if momentum weakens.

🟢 What If Positive Gamma Holds?

If the market can stay above 6760 (HVL) then we are in a positive gamma environment where volatility tends to be lower, upside moves tends to fade. But if we approach 6900 the current C1 and the market stays there, it can create a positive extension to the upside, not immediately to 7000 where the highest confluence is, but this is an important zone to watch.

From 6790 (call transition) we only observe poisitive GEX values, a positive GEX zone, 6900 being the highest cluster as C1.

🔴 If HVL breaks → Negative Gamma Profile

Under 6760 we we can observe negative GEX levels, 6675 being the highest one which we call P1.

Under P1 you we are seeing a pretty extended negative gamma zone, extending to P2 which currently sits at 6500.

If P1 breaks, the market can accelerate further down to P2 if there is followup momentum.

Please also note there in an unfilled gap on the downside below HVL, that can accelerate downward movement if price starts to drop.

🔶Understanding What Drove the Move Higher

The rally was not just sentiment-driven it was largely mechanical.

When implied volatility drops sharply in a vol crush scenario, the delta of outstanding put contracts decreases. This means dealers no longer need to maintain the same level of short hedges in the underlying, forcing them to buy back those positions.

That buying pressure directly supports the market.

Last week, this dynamic became highly significant.

Over the past month, positioning had been heavily skewed toward downside protection. As implied volatility dropped, that protection no longer required aggressive hedging, leading dealers to unwind short positions and buy back exposure.

This created a strong upward push in price.

This dynamic can reverse quickly.

If implied volatility starts to expand again — whether due to geopolitical developments, macro surprises, or earnings — those same dealer hedging flows can flip in the opposite direction.

In a negative gamma environment, these reversals can accelerate rapidly and lead to sharp directional moves.

🔶QQQ — Tech Still Leading

Looking at QQQ, last week’s strength in the tech sector is clearly visible.

The index is trading slightly above its HVL (605), supported by strong momentum from large-cap tech names.

🔴On the downside:

• 582 → P1 (protective put zone)

sits relatively far below the current price, suggesting no immediate downside pressure from positioning.

Please also note that the highest put volume on friday was by far the 582 which is the P1, so there was a massive downside hedging need based on friday’s move.

🟢On the upside:

• 615 → C1 (highest call volume)

is much closer, meaning call-side positioning could start acting as resistance if the rally continues.

615 is by far the highest call GEX value, so that could also create a potential reaction if the market reaches that point. The confluences from the secondary metrics are not as clear as in the case of SPX, more scattered among different market levels.

The highest absolute GEX value (Ab1) is at 6000 which is also the highest call a dn absolute OI. If the market reaches that level, can create a massive reaction because of that.

🔶Macro Setup and Earnings Week

In addition to several economic reports — including PPI — Federal Reserve members are expected to speak throughout the week.

At the same time, earnings season is picking up again, led by major financial institutions:

🔶 Case Study — MSFT Combined Structure

As a practical example, this Microsoft trade demonstrates how combining option structures can improve both capital efficiency and risk control in a high volatility environment using GEX levels and volatility regime information.

The setup was built around elevated implied volatility and a potential bounce from put levels while price was trading below the HVL. Instead of taking a simple directional position, the structure combined a put ratio spread to generate credit with a call-side broken wing butterfly to participate in upside.

This resulted in a position with positive theta and negative vega — a favorable combination when volatility is elevated and expected to compress.

After the market bounced, the ratio spread was closed, effectively removing the downside risk and transforming the position into a defined-risk directional trade. This adjustment significantly improved the overall risk profile while maintaining upside exposure.

The key takeaway is that combining structures allows for more flexible positioning, where exposure can be financed and risk can be actively reshaped as market conditions evolve.

🔶 SPX Weekly Analysis until Friday

At the moment, price has moved into a positive gamma environment, based on the weekly GEX outlook.

The HVL sits at 6550, which is relatively close to the current price around 6600 — especially considering the recent 150–200 point moves we’ve seen.

Just below price, around 6580, there is a strong concentration of:

• Absolute Gamma (Abs GEX #2)

• Positive DEX

• Positive transition (cTrans)

This cluster suggests that the high-volatility zone is not far below.

If the D+ structure weakens and this zone is lost, volatility can accelerate quickly, with the HVL reinforcing downside pressure.

👉 For this week, the 6550–6580 range is the key level
A break here can trigger a fast regime shift

🔴 Downside Structure — Pre-positioned Hedging

What stands out is how far the negative transition zone extends below HVL (P1 = pTrans).

This creates a structure where:

• the downside appears partially hedged in advance

• a correction toward 6400 is not unexpected by the market

• positioning already reflects some level of downside preparation

This results in a more controlled corrective structure initially, even if volatility later expands.

Important context:
Even if the transition zone stretches down to P1 with multiple put clusters (P2, P3), this does not imply sideways price action.

• The regime remains negative gamma below HVL

• ITM call-dominated strikes can still be present

• These profiles are common in pre-hedged structures

Once HVL is lost → volatility expansion still follows

🔴 How to Approach a Negative Gamma Shift

If 6550–6580 fails, the focus shifts to momentum-based trading.

The approach is straightforward:

• trade direction using simple technical confirmation

• horizontal levels, trendline breaks

• align with structural levels

Key levels to monitor:

• 6500

• 6450

• 6375–6400 (put-dominated reaction zone)

👉 At these levels:

• observe reaction

• avoid blind mean-reversion trades

• focus on capturing momentum

🔴 Strategy Alignment (Negative Gamma)

Favorable:

• Debit vertical spreads

• Ratio backspreads

Less favorable:

• Iron condors

• Neutral strategies

• Short DTE premium selling

• Credit spreads

Based on the current structure:

• The lower edge of the negative extension zone sits around 6375–6400

• From current price, this is ~200 points lower

Below this zone, there is no significant move currently priced in

🔹 Additional Context — GEX by Volume (Monday Data)

This is not a primary metric we rely on, but it adds context.

Looking at Net GEX by Volume (which filters for active traded volume):

• The most active put-side flow was at 6500

• Not at 6400, despite that being the largest Net GEX level

This suggests:

• 6500 may build stronger OI into today

• A potential strengthening of that level as a structural point

👉 Watch how this evolves after the OI refresh (~6:30 AM ET)

🟢 What If Positive Gamma Holds?

If price remains in positive gamma:

• moves are more controlled and choppy

• large expansions (150–200 pts) are less likely

Upside structure:

• nCOI / COI extends toward 6800 (⚠️ Not a realistic base case — it defines the playground; reaching it would require a strong, FOMO-driven catalyst supported by clearly positive news.)

• negative DEX (D-) sits around 6725

• main call wall near 6700

• extension zone up to ~6750

Without major news:

• price action likely remains contained

👉 6700 is a key reaction level
Strong positive gamma concentration
Limited expectation for clean break without catalyst

🟢 Strategy Alignment (Positive Gamma)

Favorable:

• OTM call butterflies

• Calendars

• Iron flies

• Asymmetric broken-wing butterflies

• Credit spreads (theta-driven)

Less favorable:

• Debit vertical spreads

• Ratio backspreads

• Strong directional volatility plays

⏳ SPX Risk Context

Current structure reflects a positive gamma environment.

However:

• A binary event is ahead (Iran-related developments 📅)

• This introduces the potential for extreme moves in either direction

Practical approach:

• stay cautious

• avoid overexposure

• consider waiting for confirmation

👉 Holding cash is a valid position here
👉 Short-term (0DTE) focus can make sense
👉 Larger directional positioning is better delayed until after the event

🔶 What the VIX beta signal is indicating now

Typically, elevated VIX comes with high VIX beta, meaning volatility spikes tend to reverse quickly.

That is not the current situation.

Over the past month, VIX has remained elevated while VIX beta has declined. The sensitivity of VIX to SPX moves is decreasing from prior highs.

This points to a regime shift.
Volatility is holding at higher levels, with a potential new range around 20–35 for an extended period.

When VIX beta is high:

• spikes are sharp

• mean reversion is fast

• fading moves can be effective

When VIX beta is low and VIX remains elevated:

• volatility becomes persistent

• moves are less reactive

• the market is repricing risk more gradually

This behavior suggests a more stable, higher-volatility environment rather than temporary spikes!
