Executive Summary

One speech did what a week of missiles and $96 crude could not. Waller broke ranks with Warsh on Wednesday, the hike stopped looking certain, and every asset priced off the cost of money jumped. The question that decides today is whether a breakout built on forced short covering can survive a payrolls number that lands four hours after this goes out.

The Macro Picture In One Screen

The macro screen has flipped from Wednesday almost line by line. Yields are off their peak, the dollar gave up ground, crude has stopped rising and Japan’s long bond has backed away from a thirty year high. Credit at 266bp and the VIX at 14.21 were calm through the scare and are calmer now, so the whole episode ended up living and dying inside the rates complex.

The calendar is where this gets awkward. Payrolls arrive this afternoon, the Fed stops speaking tomorrow, and then August CPI lands on 11 September, six days into the silence. Waller named that CPI print as the thing he is waiting for, which means the single most decision-relevant number of the month arrives when not one official can say what they make of it. There is a second pile-up on 15 September, when the FOMC convenes the same afternoon the Senate votes on the CLARITY Act, so crypto has to price a rates outcome and a legislative one off a single date.

Where Things Stand

Every row here moved yesterday, so it is worth walking them one at a time.

The row that matters most is the first one. Everything else on this table moved because that one number moved.

Since Yesterday

Three things happened, and the first one caused the other two.

Waller broke ranks. Speaking at a Reuters event, the Fed governor said he could support holding rates where they are if disinflation continues, adding that hiking 25 basis points at one meeting would not bring inflation to target anyway. He was explicit that he wants to see the August CPI print first. Hike odds fell by roughly a dozen points within minutes.

Everything rate sensitive repriced. The S&P 500 closed up 1.06% at 7,747.71 and the Nasdaq 100 up 1.16% at 29,482.32. The 10 year fell, the dollar fell, gold rose to $4,539.90 before easing this morning. The Nikkei followed overnight, closing up 1.26%.

Crypto took it hardest, in both directions. Bitcoin cleared $80,268 for its first close above that level since May. MSTR rose 17.56% and COIN 10.14%. Roughly $415m of short positions were liquidated on the way up.

That closes the two threads I was carrying. The $77,297 floor held and then became irrelevant. And the question of whether the market could clear that ceiling got answered inside one session.

A Single Governor Outweighed A Week Of War

WHAT HAPPENED

Christopher Waller told a Reuters event on Wednesday that he could back holding rates steady this month. His argument was practical rather than dovish in principle: one 25 basis point move will not drag inflation to 2%, so there is little cost to waiting a meeting and seeing the August CPI figure first.

Markets moved immediately. CME FedWatch odds of a September hike dropped roughly twelve points inside minutes and settled somewhere near even money, down from about 66% after Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech a week earlier. The 10 year Treasury yield came off Wednesday’s 4.82% peak to 4.762%. The dollar index fell to 98.91 before steadying at 99.12 this morning.

Bitcoin cleared the level and closed at $81,265, its best close in nearly four months. It sits at $80,965 now. Ether outpaced it at plus 5.3%, and Chainlink led the majors at plus 7.2%.

WHY IT MATTERS

The market was positioned for a hawkish Fed and a one way oil story. Warsh had set that up on 28 August, and Monday through Wednesday reinforced it. There were US strikes on Iran and Iranian missiles at Kuwait. Brent ran to $96.63 and the 10 year made its highest close in nearly three years. Japan’s 10 year went through 3% for the first time since 1996. By Wednesday’s close the hike was two thirds priced and crypto shorts had been added into the weakness.

Nobody was positioned for the committee to be publicly split. Warsh is the chair and had just spent Jackson Hole warning about inflation. Waller is a sitting governor with a vote, and he said out loud that he might not follow. That is a different kind of information from a data point. It tells you the outcome is contested, and contested outcomes carry far more optionality than the vol market was charging for.

The transmission chain is short and mechanical this time. Lower expected policy rates mean cheaper money for longer. Cheaper money weakens the dollar and lowers the yield you give up by holding something that pays no income. Both of those help Bitcoin, gold and Asian exporters at once, which is exactly the pattern we got. That much is confirmed. What I would not claim is that any of this reflects fresh conviction about Bitcoin itself.

MY VIEW

I am treating the breakout as technically real. That level had capped every close since 22 August, thirteen sessions, so clearing it is not noise. Price now sits above all four moving averages, and the level that acted as a ceiling should act as a floor on the first retest.

But look at how it was paid for. Roughly $415m of shorts were liquidated in 24 hours out of $564m in total. Forced buying from people closing losing positions is the least durable kind of demand there is, because it stops the moment the shorts are gone. Open interest rose 5.9% on the day, so the leverage that was flushed has been replaced rather than removed.

So my base case is that the old ceiling holds on the first test and this becomes a base. My discipline is that I want to see the market spend a session above $81,265 without a liquidation cascade underneath it before I treat this as a trend rather than a squeeze. Payrolls at 14:30 CET is the first honest test, and I am publishing before it.

WHAT I AM WATCHING

• $80,268 on a retest. If the old ceiling holds as support, the breakout is confirmed structurally.

• $82,018, the May high. Above that there is very little traded volume until the high 80s.

• Whether open interest keeps climbing. Rising price on rising leverage is a fragile combination into a data print.

• The CPI print on 11 September, because Waller named it and because no Fed official can respond to it.

My stance today: constructive, but this needs a second session to prove itself

Worth Knowing

The CLARITY Act gets its first real test in eleven days, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. The Senate votes on cloture at 14:15 ET on 15 September. That is the procedural step deciding whether the crypto market structure bill reaches the floor at all. Cloture needs 60 votes and Republicans hold 53 seats, so at least seven Democrats have to cross. The sticking points have not moved since the committee stage: ethics rules covering elected officials’ own crypto holdings, law enforcement and anti money laundering provisions, and the treatment of stablecoin rewards. The bill would split oversight between the SEC and the CFTC and place most of the industry under the latter.

What that means for the trade. If cloture fails, US crypto keeps operating under agency discretion rather than statute into the midterms. That is roughly what this market already assumes, which is why a failure should cost less than a success would pay. It is an asymmetry worth owning rather than a risk worth hedging.

Outside the US the rulebooks are arriving anyway. The UK’s FCA opens its crypto licensing regime this month, pulling British platforms, lending and staking inside the existing financial services architecture. The European Commission’s MiCA review consultation closed on 31 August, starting the clock on a revised framework. Neither moves price today. Both decide where non-US liquidity is legally allowed to sit next year, and both are proceeding on schedule while Washington argues.

Market Blind Spot

The $730.8m ETF day is being read as institutional confirmation. It is the one number on the tape that cannot confirm anything, and the on-chain data from the same day says the opposite.

Start with the mechanics. Farside flows settle a day late and are reported a day late. The $730.8m is dated 3 September, the day Bitcoin rose five percent. A fund that creates shares after a rally is doing exactly what a passive vehicle tracking demand does. It is the rally’s echo. Treating it as independent evidence of conviction is double counting the same move.

Now put it next to what actually happened to the coins. Exchange balances rose by about 3,970 Bitcoin over the same 24 hours. Coins moving onto exchanges is the setup for selling, not for holding. And Lookonchain flagged a wallet that had sat still for four years selling 1,400 Bitcoin, worth roughly $112m, into this strength. That holder bought 2,200 coins for about $99m four years ago and chose this week to take some off.

So on one screen you have a record-looking inflow number. On the other you have net coin movement toward exchanges and a patient long-term holder distributing. Both are true. Only one of them involves someone making an active decision about price, and it is not the ETF number.

What I take from it is narrower than a bearish call. It is that the strongest bullish datapoint of the week is the weakest kind of evidence, and the market is leaning on it hardest.

Technical Snapshot

Price is above all four moving averages and 6.8% clear of the 20 day at $75,801. The one caveat that keeps me honest is that the 50 day at $71,096 still sits below the 200 day at $73,611. The averages have not crossed back yet, so this remains a recovery from a crash rather than an established uptrend.

The structure above is the interesting part. The May high at $82,018 is the last place this market traded in size before a long empty stretch. Thin territory cuts both ways: it lets price travel quickly, and it offers nothing to catch a fall. That is why the retest below matters more than the push toward $82,018.

Japan is worth a line because it is the risk that arrives without warning. Its 10 year touched 3% this week for the first time since 1996 before easing to about 2.96%. When Japanese yields rise, money borrowed cheaply in yen to buy higher yielding assets abroad starts going home, and the assets get sold to fund it. That the yield has come back down is a quiet piece of good news for every leveraged trade on the planet, including this one.

Friday Scorecard: How This Week’s Calls Aged

What the week said early on. Monday through Wednesday the story was oil. US strikes on Iran, Iranian missiles at Kuwait, Brent to $96.63, the 10 year to its highest close since November 2023 and Japan’s 10 year through 3%. I wrote yesterday that crude was the transmission belt setting direction, and that a September hike was largely in the price.

What actually happened. Crude peaked and rolled over. Waller spoke on Wednesday and hike odds fell about twelve points in minutes. Bitcoin went up five percent on that, not on anything to do with the Gulf. Measured across the week Bitcoin is up less than 1%, having dipped to $77,297 in between before clearing $80,268.

What I got right. The $77,000 floor held, as I said it would, on the twelfth and then the fourteenth attempt. And “the hike is largely in the price” was the right read, just proved in reverse: the market rallied when the hike got less likely rather than crashing when it got more likely.

What I got wrong. I gave oil too much weight. I framed crude as the thing running the Fed, and by Thursday the Fed was running the Fed and crude was an afterthought. Geopolitics moved the tape for three days. Fed communication moved it more in three minutes. That is the lesson I am taking into next week.

The one that is still open. On Thursday I argued optionality looked cheap into this fortnight. Bitcoin’s five percent day and MSTR’s 17.56% day say yes. But the VIX fell from 15.29 to 14.21 across the same stretch, so index volatility would have lost money. The idea was right about crypto and wrong about equities, and I am not going to pretend those are the same trade.

Stocks

Europe has done almost nothing this morning, which is its own kind of statement after Thursday’s move. The STOXX 600 is up 0.05% at 649.40, the DAX up 0.05%, the FTSE 100 up 0.02% and the CAC 40 down 0.08%. The individual story is Volkswagen, up around 6% on plans to cut 50,000 jobs, which tells you more about European industrial pain than about the Fed.

Asia took the Waller news properly. The Nikkei closed up 1.26% at 65,021, helped by both the softer dollar and the retreat in domestic bond yields. Shanghai went the other way, closing down 0.30% at 3,930.

US futures are edging higher into the number, with S&P 500 futures up 0.06% at 7,759 and Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.45% at 29,659. Thursday’s cash closes were 7,747.71 and 29,482.32, leaving the S&P about 0.9% below its August record.

Payrolls at 14:30 CET cuts both ways and it is worth being clear about how. Consensus is roughly 58,000 jobs with unemployment at 4.1%. A hot print hands the argument back to Warsh and puts the hike back toward certain, which takes the legs from yesterday’s move. A cold print confirms Waller but revives the growth worry that the July miss started, and a market that rallies on weak jobs data is rallying for a reason it will not enjoy later. There is no clean outcome here.

On volatility the line remains a sustained VIX close through roughly 20. At 14.21 we are a long way below it and the funds that size by volatility stay fully invested. That is supportive until it reverses, at which point it becomes mechanical selling that crypto has historically joined rather than hedged.

Flows And Rotation

Dominance sits at 59.7% and gained a third of a point overnight, so the rotation chart stays out again today. The majors all beat Bitcoin, but a rising dominance reading on a broad rally is not rotation, it is everything going up together.

The crowd is fading this. Retail long and short account ratios on Binance and OKX fell between 24% and 28% over the day, to 0.85 and 0.93 respectively. Both are below 1.0, meaning more accounts are short than long after a five percent rally. The largest traders went the other way, with the Binance top-trader position ratio at 1.98. Small accounts are selling this breakout and big ones are not.

ETF FLOWS

Two rows are worth naming. ARKB took $137.7m after posting zeros for most of the past fortnight. And GBTC, which has bled money for two years, took a small positive $8.2m. Across the last five posted sessions the bitcoin funds are plus $610.2m in total. Ether funds took $141.4m on 3 September and plus $291.5m over the same five sessions. Friday 4 September has not been posted yet and is pending. All figures Farside Investors, which publishes with roughly a one day lag.

CORPORATE TREASURY SUPPLY

Strategy did nothing new this week beyond what it disclosed on Monday, so the standing picture holds. It owns 845,050 Bitcoin. The 4,603 coins bought at an average $80,318 are now marginally in profit rather than under water, and the $1.25bn sale authorisation from June is still unused since early July.

The number that changed is the discount. The stock closed up 17.56% at $144.82 for a market value near $55.6bn against coins worth roughly $68.4bn, so it trades at about 0.81 times what it holds. Yesterday that figure was 0.72. That gap closing is the whole reason MSTR outran Bitcoin by roughly four to one on the day, and it is why a treasury company is a leveraged bet on sentiment as much as on the coin.

Glossary

Real yield. The return on a government bond after subtracting expected inflation. What you actually gain in purchasing power.

Credit spreads (HY OAS). The extra interest riskier companies pay above the government. Widening means investors fear defaults.

Dominance. Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market value. Falling dominance normally means money rotating into smaller coins.

Open interest. The total value of derivative contracts left open. A proxy for how much leverage sits in the market.

Blackout. The period before an interest rate decision when Federal Reserve officials may not comment publicly on policy.

Basis points (bp). One hundredth of a percentage point. 100bp equals 1%.

Oil is the transmission belt for this entire market right now. Crude is up more than 15% in a month on a war around the Strait of Hormuz. That has dragged US long yields to their highest close since 2023, and it has turned a comfortable September hold into a coin flip. What decides today is whether Bitcoin can ignore that chain for a thirteenth session, and the honest answer is that tomorrow’s payrolls print settles it, not today’s tape.

The Macro Picture In One Screen

Put the four macro gauges on one screen and they flatly disagree with each other. Rates and oil are pricing an inflation problem, with the US 10 year near a three year high and Brent up 15.5% in a month. Credit and volatility are pricing nothing at all, at 265bp and 15.29 respectively, so today’s stress sits entirely inside the rates complex and has not leaked into risk appetite.

Where Things Stand

Here is the machinery behind today’s move, one row at a time.

The row that stands out is credit. At 265bp the bond market is telling you it is worried about the price of things, not about anybody going bust.

Since Yesterday

Three things changed overnight, and two of them pull against each other.

Iran struck Kuwait. Brent added another 1.1% to $96.63 and WTI rose 1.7% to $92.55. Crude now sits 15.5% higher than a month ago and 7.9% higher than five sessions ago. Trump said the renewed hostilities would not last “too long”, which is why the move was one percent rather than five.

Yields backed off. The US 10 year fell 2.2bp to 4.772% and the 2 year fell 2.1bp to 4.365%, after Wednesday closed at the highest 10 year level since November 2023. That small relief is what has let crypto and European equities tick higher this morning.

Strategy started buying again. Its filing shows 4,603 BTC bought for $369.7m at an average of $80,318, ending a ten week pause. That average sits above today’s spot, so the largest corporate holder in the market is already underwater on the tranche.

Two threads from earlier in the week are now closed. The $77,000 floor held again, on the twelfth attempt. And the CLARITY Act did get its Senate slot rather than dying quietly over the recess, which is the better of the two outcomes the market was carrying.

Lead Story

Crude Is Running The Fed Now, And Bitcoin Has Stopped Flinching

WHAT HAPPENED

Iran struck Kuwait overnight, the latest exchange in a fight that has kept the Strait of Hormuz contested since spring. Brent rose 1.1% to $96.63 and WTI rose 1.7% to $92.55. Trump said the hostilities would not last long, which capped the reaction.

The bond market then did the opposite of the obvious. The US 10 year fell to 4.772% after Wednesday’s three year closing high, and the 2 year fell to 4.365%. European cash markets are marginally higher, led by the FTSE 100 at plus 0.3%, because London’s index is packed with oil majors like Shell and BP, so expensive crude helps it. Paris is down 0.25% for the mirror image reason.

Crypto took the relief and ran with it. Bitcoin is up 1.9% at $77,888, and the altcoins moved harder: SUI plus 8.3%, XRP plus 4.0%, Solana plus 3.1%.

WHY IT MATTERS

The market was positioned for the wrong Fed. Through July and early August the consensus was that the next move was a cut or a very long hold, and the big July payrolls miss on 7 August hardened that view. Then two things landed within four sessions. Warsh used his Jackson Hole speech on 28 August to say the summer inflation readings did not convince him the trend had improved, citing PCE at 3.7% over twelve months. And crude broke higher on renewed strikes. Hike odds went from roughly a third to two thirds.

Here is the chain in plain terms. Expensive oil raises what you pay for petrol, for shipping goods and for growing and moving food. Those costs show up in the inflation figures a month or two later. Inflation is what the Fed raises interest rates to fight. Higher rates make cash pay more, which makes anything that pays nothing look worse by comparison. The first three links there are mechanical and confirmed. The fourth link, rates to Bitcoin, is the one I will not over-claim: BTC is up nearly two percent today with a hike two thirds priced, which is not what the textbook says.

MY VIEW

Bitcoin has now closed above $77,000 for twelve sessions running. It did that through a hawkish turn from the Fed chair, through a 15% move in crude and through the 10 year making a near three year high. That is not a market unaware of the macro. That is a market that has already absorbed a September hike and decided it can live with one.

The positioning data backs that up rather than contradicting it. Funding is flat at 0.0055% per eight hours, roughly six percent a year to hold a long. Liquidations are down 40% to about $221m. The long and short split is 49.9 to 50.1. There is no crowded position to squeeze in either direction.

So my base case is that the hike itself is not the danger. The danger is a payrolls number tomorrow hot enough to shift the conversation from one hike to a hiking cycle. That is an entirely different trade, and it is the thing that would take out the 20 day EMA at $74,936.

The strongest case against my view

The honest case against me is that twelve quiet sessions above $77,000 are not evidence of resilience, just evidence of a market on holiday. The range has been under four percent, volume has been thin, and that same stretch covers a US strike on Iran, a hawkish Fed chair and Japan’s 10 year touching 3% for the first time in thirty years. A tape that shrugs at all of that is not absorbing the news, it is ignoring it. Markets that ignore things do not drift lower when they finally notice, they gap. If that reading is right, the repricing has not happened yet, and the first genuine catalyst delivers it in one move rather than twelve sessions.

WHAT I AM WATCHING

• $80,268, the 28 August high. A daily close above it turns this box into a base.

• $74,936, the 20 day EMA. The first level a hot payrolls print would test.

• The VIX through 20. That is where volatility-targeting funds cut equity exposure automatically, and crypto follows equities down when they do.

• Whether the 10 year takes out Wednesday’s high on tomorrow’s number.

Worth Knowing

The September options book is built around a much lower price. Deribit’s quarterly expiry on 25 September has max pain sitting near $70,000 to $73,000, and its single largest open contract is the 25 September $70,000 call. That book was assembled when Bitcoin was a great deal cheaper, which is why so much of it now sits far from spot. It matters because dealers hedging that book add friction on the way down toward $73,000 and rather less on the way up.

The UK opens its crypto licensing regime this month. The FCA begins accepting applications in September, which pulls British trading platforms, lending and staking inside the existing financial services architecture. On the European side, the Commission’s MiCA review consultation closed on 31 August, opening the door to a revised framework. Neither moves price today. Both matter for where non-US liquidity is legally allowed to sit next year, which is exactly the question the CLARITY Act is asking on the other side of the Atlantic.

Market Blind Spot

What nobody is charging for is the shape of the calendar, not the level of anything on it.

From Saturday, no Federal Reserve official may speak publicly until after the decision. The blackout runs 5 September through 17 September. That means the last Fed-relevant information this market receives is tomorrow’s payrolls report, and then there are ten days in which an even money decision cannot be steered, hinted at or softened by anybody.

Now look at what the VIX charges for that stretch. 15.29, close to its lowest reading of the year. Options across the next fortnight are priced as though that fortnight contains nothing. In fact it contains a jobs report, ten days of enforced official silence and then a rate decision the market itself scores as a toss-up.

For crypto the compression is worse, because 15 September carries two independent binary outcomes. The FOMC convenes that morning. The Senate takes its cloture vote on the CLARITY Act the same day, needing 60 votes, with Republicans still roughly six Democrats short. One date, two unrelated coin tosses, and neither one shows up anywhere in funding, which sits at 0.0055% per eight hours.

The idea worth thinking about here is not directional at all. It is that optionality looks cheap into a fortnight where the information flow stops dead and then restarts all at once.

Technical Snapshot

Price sits above all four moving averages, which sounds bullish until you notice that the 50 day at $70,561 is still below the 200 day at $73,503. That is the signature of a recovery from a crash, not a confirmed uptrend. Bitcoin bottomed at $58,566 in late June and printed $69,291 on 20 August before the fastest weekly gain in its history.

That history is why the levels matter more than the moving averages today. The whole of the last twelve sessions fits inside a box from $77,297 to $80,268. A close above the top turns eight weeks of damage repair into a base. A close below the bottom puts the 20 day EMA in play within a session, and the 20 day is exactly where a hot payrolls number would send it.

Japan deserves a line of its own. Its 10 year reached 3% on Tuesday for the first time in thirty years, and its 2 year hit a 31 year high. When Japanese yields rise, money that was borrowed cheaply in yen to buy higher yielding assets abroad starts coming home. That unwind has hit crypto before, and it is the one rates channel that can arrive without any warning from Washington at all.

Stocks

Europe is grinding higher on the yield relief. The STOXX 600 is up 0.2% at 647.41. Underneath that the split is entirely about oil. The FTSE 100 leads at plus 0.3%, because Shell and BP are a large slice of it and both benefit from $96 Brent. The CAC 40 is down 0.25% and the DAX is flat at plus 0.04%.

Asia closed before Europe opened and went nowhere. The Nikkei ended down 0.17% at 64,214, weighed by a domestic bond market where the 10 year just cleared 3%. Shanghai finished flat at 3,942.

US futures are doing very little into the data. S&P 500 futures are up 0.06% at 7,681 and Nasdaq 100 futures are down 0.09% at 29,160. Wednesday’s cash closes were 7,666.60 on the S&P and 29,143.33 on the Nasdaq 100, leaving the S&P about 1.9% below its August record.

Today’s data cuts both ways, which is worth saying out loud. Weekly jobless claims are seen at 205,000 against 203,000 prior, and ISM services at 54.5 against 54.1. A strong services reading confirms the economy can take a hike and lifts hike odds. A weak one relieves rate pressure but revives the growth worry that the July payrolls miss started. Neither outcome is cleanly good for risk assets, and the same logic applies with more force to tomorrow’s payrolls.

On volatility, the line to hold in mind is a sustained VIX close through roughly 20. At 15.29 we are nowhere near it, and funds that size positions off volatility remain fully invested. Through 20 they cut mechanically, and crypto has historically been sold alongside equities when that happens rather than treated as a hedge.

Flows And Rotation

Bitcoin dominance is 59.5% and moved five hundredths of a point overnight, so I have left the dominance chart out today. The altcoins outran Bitcoin by three to six times, but on a flat dominance reading that is one session of noise rather than rotation.

On chain. Exchange balances fell by about 362 BTC over 24 hours to 2.49m (CoinGlass), which is a trickle rather than accumulation. Lookonchain flagged the trader James Wynn closing a Bitcoin short at a loss and opening a 30x long around 1 September. Interesting, not a signal.

ETF FLOWS

Last five posted sessions for the bitcoin funds: plus $121.7m in total. Ether funds took minus $48.2m on 2 September, with a rare $53.4m outflow from ETHA offset by $52.9m into ETHB, and plus $375.9m across the same five sessions. Thursday 3 September has not been posted yet and is pending. All figures Farside Investors, which publishes with roughly a one day lag.

Read that flow honestly. Five sessions of net bitcoin ETF demand comes to $122m. Strategy alone bought $369.7m of coins in one filing window. The ETF tape is not what is setting the price here, and an inflow arriving after a rally is momentum behaviour rather than independent confirmation of anything.

CORPORATE TREASURY SUPPLY

Strategy has flipped from seller to buyer. It bought 4,603 BTC for $369.7m at an average $80,318, ending a ten week pause, and holdings now stand at 845,050 BTC. It also spent $635.2m buying back its STRC preferred and reported a $5.1bn dollar reserve as of 30 August. The $1.25bn sale authorisation from June still stands but has not been used since the early July tranche.

The number that governs what happens next is the discount. Strategy’s equity market value is about $47.3bn while its coins are worth roughly $65.8bn at today’s spot, so the stock trades near 0.72 times the value of what it holds. Below one, issuing shares to buy more Bitcoin destroys value for existing holders, which is precisely why the cash went into a preferred buyback this week rather than into more coins. Netting it against the flow above, corporate demand is currently larger than ETF demand and considerably more price sensitive.

American stocks are up, American volatility is down, and bitcoin is still lower. That combination is the whole story. Soft US labour data took some heat out of the Fed trade, but Japan’s 10-year went through 3 percent for the first time since 1996 and dragged the Nikkei down 2.85 percent with it.

Crypto is not trading the Fed today. It is trading the price of borrowed yen. What decides the rest of the session is whether bitcoin can close the New York day back above $76,871.

The Macro Picture in One Screen

The four gauges have split apart since yesterday. American equity volatility is falling and credit is only marginally wider, so the US market reads this as a growth scare that removes a rate hike. Global bond yields say something else entirely, with Japan through 3 percent, gilts at 5.239 percent and Bunds at 3.378 percent. When those two readings disagree, the bond market is usually the one telling the truth.

The sequencing is what makes the next fortnight awkward. Payrolls land Friday, then the Fed goes silent on Saturday, so US inflation on September 11 arrives with nobody able to soften it. September 15 stacks the Senate’s CLARITY cloture vote on the first day of the FOMC. Two days after that the Bank of Japan meets, on the same week as quarterly expiry, which is the most crowded 96 hours on the calendar.

Where Things Stand

Six numbers set the terms, and today they do not agree with each other.

The row that stands out is the VIX, because falling US equity volatility while global bond yields climb is a bet that this stays somebody else’s problem.

Since Yesterday

Three things changed overnight, and only one of them was American.

Tokyo took over the rates story. The 10-year JGB touched 3 percent, a level last seen in 1996, and the two-year jumped 6.7 basis points to 1.866 percent. The Nikkei fell 2.85 percent to 64,325.64, led by SoftBank down 6.4 percent and Tokyo Electron down 3.4 percent. The yen strengthened to 158.74. Rising Japanese yields with a rising yen is the signature of money coming home.

The US data came in soft, and it did not help crypto. ADP private payrolls rose 38,000, well under July’s 44,000 and the weakest since January. Goods-producing industries actually shed 10,000 jobs. Tuesday’s ISM manufacturing told the same story, with employment down to 51.2 while prices paid held at 71.1. American shares rallied on this. Bitcoin did not.

The ETF bid reversed. Bitcoin funds lost $236.5 million on September 1 after taking in $216.7 million the day before. IBIT alone gave back $201.2 million, which is unusual for BlackRock’s fund. Ether funds have gone from $225.8 million on August 27 to $8.6 million on September 1.

Lead Story

The rates risk moved from Washington to Tokyo, and crypto felt it first.

WHAT HAPPENED

Two soft American labour reports landed inside 24 hours. ISM manufacturing employment fell to 51.2 on Tuesday, and ADP came in at 38,000 this morning. On any normal day that is a green light for risk assets, because it makes a September rate rise harder to justify. US stocks took it that way and the VIX dropped more than 5 percent.

Crypto went the other way. Bitcoin fell to $76,298, through Monday’s low, and the alts fell roughly twice as hard. Solana lost $100, Chainlink fell 3.2 percent and XRP fell 3.1 percent. Meanwhile Japan’s 10-year yield hit 3 percent, its highest since 1996, and the yen strengthened while it happened.

WHY IT MATTERS

The market was positioned for a single risk. For a week everyone has been trading one question, which is whether Kevin Warsh hikes on September 16. Positioning got built around that, and the soft data this week should have paid it off. Instead the payoff went to equities and crypto was left holding a different exposure entirely.

Here is the mechanism, plainly. For years investors have borrowed Japanese currency at almost no cost and used the money to buy assets that pay more elsewhere. When Japanese yields rise, that borrowing gets expensive. When the yen also strengthens, the loan itself gets bigger in the currency you have to repay. Both happened today. Anyone funded that way has to shrink positions, and they sell what is liquid and profitable first. After a 23 percent August, crypto is both.

I flagged this chain yesterday as real but unproven. Today it is doing visible work, which is the first evidence rather than the proof. One session of yen strength and crypto weakness is a data point, not a regime. But it is exactly the pattern the mechanism predicts, and it arrived on the day the American excuse for selling disappeared.

MY VIEW

I am bearish into the Bank of Japan meeting and I have raised conviction, not lowered it. The reason is that the argument for owning crypto here has narrowed to one thing, which is that the Fed will not hike. That case got stronger today and the price still fell.

What I will not do is short an asset that just bounced 1.1 percent off its low with liquidations already cleared. My line is $76,298, this morning’s low. A daily close below it, with the yen through 158, is where I would treat this as a trend. Until then it is a market that has lost its buyer, which is not the same as a market with a seller.

The strongest case against my view

The Bank of Japan has talked about hiking for two years and repeatedly declined. Japanese officials also intervened jointly with the US to support the yen recently, and a stronger yen is the outcome they wanted, so today may be policy working rather than a market breaking. Meanwhile American growth is cooling fast enough that a Fed hike could come off the table completely by Friday afternoon. If payrolls disappoint and the Bank of Japan holds on the 18th, the two things pushing crypto down both disappear inside a fortnight, and $76,298 will look like the low of the move.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

The New York close relative to $76,871. Friday’s payrolls, forecast plus 63,000 after minus 23,000. The yen, where 158 is my level. And high-yield spreads, which have finally started widening from a very tight base.

MY STANCE TODAY

Bearish, patient, still flat. I want a daily close under this morning’s low before I act, and I would rather be late than short a bounce.

Worth Knowing

Gold rose while real yields rose, which is not how it usually works. Bullion added 1.0 percent to $4,440 with the 10-year real yield at 2.44 percent, its highest of the cycle. Normally those move against each other, because a higher real return on bonds makes a metal that pays nothing less attractive. When gold ignores that, it is being bought for a reason other than rates, and the obvious candidate is a Middle East conflict that keeps producing new headlines. It is worth noting that bitcoin, which spent 2024 being sold as the same kind of hedge, is not participating.

Market Blind Spot

Over the past 30 days Binance’s bitcoin balance rose by 31,123 coins. That number is already circulating as evidence that holders are moving supply onto exchanges to sell. Look one line further down the same table. Bithumb’s balance fell by 31,825 coins over exactly the same period.

Those two figures differ by about 700 bitcoin. Bithumb now holds 1,163 coins in total, having started the month with roughly 33,000. An exchange does not lose 96 percent of its bitcoin to ordinary selling without a headline attached, and there has not been one.

The far likelier explanation is a custody migration, where a venue moves client assets to another platform or a new custodian. That is an administrative event. It creates no sell pressure at all, and it makes the Binance inflow number close to meaningless this month.

I cannot prove the transfer from public data alone, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I can say is that the arithmetic is too neat to ignore, and that anyone building a bearish supply argument on Binance inflows in the next few days is probably building it on a bookkeeping entry. The genuinely informative number in that table is Coinbase, which lost 9,224 coins in a week with no offsetting gain anywhere. That one is real, and it points the other way.

Technical Snapshot

Chart 1. The Monday low broke intraday and was recovered. The 20-day EMA is the next shelf.

Nothing structural has broken yet. Price is still above all four daily moving averages, and August’s reclaim of the 200-day EMA at $73,452 remains intact. That reclaim is the single line separating a recovery from a failed bounce, and it sits 4.8 percent below spot.

What has changed is the cushion above. Yesterday the August ceiling was 1.6 percent overhead and today it is 2.6 percent. The distance to the 20-day EMA has narrowed from 4.6 percent to 3.3 percent. The band bitcoin can move in without doing technical damage is getting thinner from both sides, which is what a market losing its buyer looks like on a chart.

On-Chain Deep-Dive

Wednesday is when I look past price at what the coins themselves are doing. Exchange balances are the cleanest read available without a paid data terminal, because they show where bitcoin is actually sitting.

Three things stand out. The first is Coinbase, which has shed 9,224 coins in a week without any matching gain elsewhere. Coins leaving the main American venue usually means institutional buyers moving them into custody, and that is a slow, deliberate flow rather than a trading one.

The second is the split between venues. Balances are falling at the places where Americans and institutions buy, and rising at the places where leverage is traded. Coins parked on a derivatives venue are coins available as margin, so this quietly raises the amount of bitcoin that can be liquidated in a fast move. Today’s $365 million of liquidations is the small version of that.

The third is the Bithumb line, which I have written about above, and which changes how the Binance number should be read.

On individual whales, I have nothing worth reporting today. Lookonchain, Arkham and Whale Alert turned up no single transfer large enough to matter against the venue-level moves in the table, and I would rather say that than dress up a routine wallet shuffle as a signal.

The honest caveat is that exchange balance data comes from address clustering. Providers label wallets differently, and a relabelled address can look like a flow when nothing moved. I use it for direction over weeks, not for signals over hours.

Stocks

Europe is drifting rather than falling. The STOXX 600 is down 0.2 percent at 646.17, with the DAX off 0.4 percent and London down 0.3 percent at 10,760.50. Paris is flat. Asia is where the damage was. The Nikkei closed down 2.85 percent, Shanghai fell 0.97 percent to 3,941.39, and Hong Kong held up at minus 0.07 percent. That split matters, because it shows this is a Japanese funding story rather than a general Asian risk-off.

The US session is green. The Dow leads at plus 0.68 percent, the S&P 500 is up 0.49 percent at 7,668.64, and the Nasdaq 100 lags at plus 0.20 percent. Friday’s payrolls cut both ways and it is worth naming which way. A weak number confirms the growth slowdown and probably kills the September hike, which is good for shares and eventually good for crypto. A strong number with hot wage growth revives the hike while the ISM says manufacturing is slowing, and that is the combination nobody is positioned for.

The VIX at 15.46 is the single most complacent number on my screen. Volatility funds only cut exposure mechanically above roughly 20, so US equity selling remains a choice rather than a requirement. That is comfortable right up until the moment it is not.

Flows and Rotation

No dominance chart again today. Bitcoin’s share of the market sits at 59.1 percent on CoinGecko, half a point off yesterday, which is inside the noise created by stablecoins holding their value while everything else falls. The rotation is visible in the prices instead: the high-beta majors gave up roughly twice what bitcoin did, and Solana lost the $100 handle. On a day driven by funding costs, that is exactly the order you would expect things to be sold in.

The ETH/BTC ratio has slipped to 0.0311 from 0.0315 yesterday. Ether’s outperformance was the one piece of relative strength I liked, and it gave some of it back today.

The corporate bid, netted. Strategy has not announced a purchase since Monday’s 4,603 coins at an average of $80,318, which is 4.1 percent above today’s price. Its shares are $123.19, down 7.3 percent across two sessions, and Coinbase is $177.22, down 5.8 percent over the same stretch. Against that, bitcoin funds gave back $236.5 million on Tuesday. So the two demand sources that carried August, ETF creations and treasury buying, were both absent or negative in the same session for the first time in weeks.

ETF flows. IBIT’s $201.2 million redemption is unusual enough to show the whole run rather than a single day, so here are the last six posted sessions. Wednesday is not published yet, because Farside posts with roughly a one-day lag.

Four funds are left out of that table because they printed zero on every one of those six days: BTCO, EZBC, BRRR and BTCW. Ether funds are compact by comparison. On September 1 they took in $8.6 million, made up of ETHB at plus $11.2 million, FETH at plus $4.8 million and ETHE at minus $7.4 million, with BlackRock’s ETHA flat at zero. Across the last five posted sessions ether funds netted plus $616.5 million against plus $252.8 million for bitcoin.

Read the direction carefully. Flows settle a day late and they chase price, so an outflow the day after a fall is momentum behaving normally rather than independent proof of anything. The detail that does carry information is which fund moved. Small funds leaving is retail noise. BlackRock’s fund printing its largest redemption in weeks means an allocator sold, and allocators do not usually reverse inside a session.

mNAV. A treasury company’s market value divided by the value of the coins it holds. Above 1.0 it can issue shares and buy more. Below 1.0 it cannot.

Cloture. A US Senate vote to end debate. It needs 60 votes, and failing it usually kills the bill.

The Bank of Japan meets on September 17 and 18, and what happens could matter far beyond Japanese markets.

For years, investors have borrowed yen at very low rates and used that money to buy higher risk assets like US stocks, Treasuries and crypto.

It works while Japanese rates stay low and the yen stays weak.

But both are changing. Why I think this matters and what my scenarios are written down for paid subscribers below:

Bitcoin has absorbed a hawkish Jackson Hole, a fresh Middle East escalation and the highest 10-year yield in 20 months, and it is still above $77,000. That resilience is real. It is also the problem, because the price still reflects a liquidity cycle that three central banks are now actively reversing.

What decides today is the prices paid component of the ISM manufacturing survey at 10:00 in New York. Consensus wants 69, down from 71.1. A hotter number turns a 66 percent hike into something much closer to settled.

The Macro Picture in One Screen

Four gauges usually tell you where the stress in this market actually lives, and today only two of them are lit. Rates and oil are under genuine pressure, with the US 10-year at a 20-month high and Brent pushing $92 on Hormuz headlines. Credit spreads at 260 basis points and a VIX under 16 say that pressure has not yet reached the parts of the market where people are forced to sell.

The next fortnight is dense, and the dates do more work than usual. Payrolls land Friday, the last data the Fed can answer in public before it goes quiet on Saturday. US inflation then arrives on September 11 with nobody at the Fed allowed to frame it. September 15 stacks the Senate’s CLARITY cloture vote on top of the first day of the FOMC, so crypto takes its legislative and its monetary risk within a single day.

Where Things Stand

Six numbers set the terms for everything else today.

The row that stands out is credit, because a market that genuinely feared a hiking cycle would not still lend to weak companies at 260 basis points.

Since Yesterday

Three things changed since Monday’s close, and two of them point the same way.

Strategy started buying again. Michael Saylor posted “We’re back” on Sunday, and Monday’s 8-K showed 4,603 BTC bought between August 24 and August 30. The average price was $80,318, which is above where bitcoin trades this morning. MSTR closed up 4.4 percent on the news and is giving back 3.1 percent before the open.

Europe’s energy shock showed up in the inflation data. Euro area headline inflation hit 3.3 percent, the highest since September 2024, with energy up 14.3 percent. Core actually eased to 2.4 percent. That combination is exactly what a supply shock looks like, and the ECB is expected to hike into it anyway.

The bond selloff went global. The US 10-year is at 4.784 percent, gilts jumped 7.9 basis points to 5.228 percent, and Japan’s 10-year sits at 2.992 percent near a three-decade high. When Tokyo pays almost 3 percent at home, the cheap funding that has bankrolled global risk for years gets less cheap.

Lead Story

The August rally was a bet on cheaper money. The calendar is voting the other way.

WHAT HAPPENED

Bitcoin gained 23 percent in August, its best month of 2026, and spent the final week of it stalling near $79,000. Then Kevin Warsh spoke at Jackson Hole on August 28. He said inflation is running above target, that recent prints do not show a better underlying trend, and that financial conditions are not restrictive. Hike odds for September went from roughly 35 percent to 66 percent in three sessions.

Since then the news has only pushed the same direction. US forces struck missile launchers on Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday, Iran fired at US bases in Jordan, and Brent went up 1.8 percent to $92.11. Euro area inflation followed this morning at 3.3 percent. Bitcoin dipped 4 percent to $76,871 on Monday and has clawed back part of it.

WHY IT MATTERS

The market was positioned for the wrong Fed. Through July and early August the story was a labour market cracking, with payrolls at minus 23,000 and traders leaning toward cuts. Crypto rallied hard into that story, and so did every long-duration asset. Warsh has now told everyone that the Fed is looking at prices, not jobs.

Here is the chain, spelled out. Expensive oil raises the cost of petrol, shipping and food. That is inflation. Inflation is what a central bank raises rates to fight. Higher rates lift the real yield on cash and bonds, which is the return you get after inflation. Bitcoin pays no yield at all, so the more that real return climbs, the more it costs you to own bitcoin instead of a Treasury. At a 2.42 percent real yield that cost is the highest it has been in this cycle.

The second-order link is the one I would watch, and it is not yet confirmed. If the ECB hikes on September 10 and the Bank of Japan follows later in the month, the cheap yen funding behind a lot of global leverage starts to reprice. Japan’s 10-year at 2.992 percent is the tell. That chain is real but unproven, and I will not pretend the market has already begun to price it.

MY VIEW

I am leaning bearish into the middle of September without being short here. What keeps me from pressing it is that none of the stress indicators agree with me yet. Credit is calm, volatility is cheap, and ETF money kept arriving right through the hawkish turn.

So I want the market to prove the thesis before I press it. My line is $76,871, where Monday’s selling stopped. Bitcoin has bounced off that level once already. A daily close below it, with the 10-year above 4.80 percent, is the point where I would treat this as a trend rather than a wobble.

The strongest case against my view

A 66 percent hike is mostly in the price already, and prediction markets are not even convinced of that. Polymarket and Kalshi both lean narrowly toward a hold, so the CME number may be flattering the hawks. Warsh also has to carry a committee, and one hawkish speech does not do that on its own. If payrolls come in soft on Friday, the case for hiking into a weakening labour market falls apart quickly, and everything I have written above unwinds inside a session.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

ISM prices paid at 10:00 New York time today, forecast 69 against 71.1. Friday’s payrolls, forecast plus 63,000 after minus 23,000. Whether that line holds on a closing basis. And whether high-yield spreads move at all from 260 basis points, because that is where a real risk-off would show up first.

MY STANCE TODAY

Cautious. Respecting the level, not chasing the story. I am flat and comfortable being flat. I want either a close under that level or a soft payrolls print before I do anything with size.

Worth Knowing

The UK opens its crypto licensing regime this month. The FCA begins accepting applications in September, which turns three years of consultation into an actual gate. For anyone running a venue into British clients, September is the month the optionality ends.

Bitcoin treasury buying is broadening beyond Strategy. Strive added 1,800 BTC to become the fifth-largest listed holder, and BitMine added 53,501 ETH. Tom Lee called ether the best performing macro asset while announcing it. Two of the top five corporate bitcoin holders are now backed by Tether and by Cantor Fitzgerald, which tells you how much of this bid is intermediary money rather than operating cash flow.

Market Blind Spot

Everyone read Monday’s Strategy filing as demand returning. Read the cash flows instead. Strategy sold 4,531,421 new shares last week for roughly $602.8 million, using its at-the-market programme. Of that, $369.7 million went into bitcoin. The other $233 million did not. It went to buying back $151.8 million of STRC preferred stock, paying $50.7 million of STRC dividends, and adding $30 million to cash.

So 61 percent of the raise went to servicing and shrinking the company’s own credit stack. The bitcoin purchase is the smaller half of the transaction, and it is the half that gets the headline. That headline is what keeps the equity trading above book, which is what makes the share sale possible in the first place.

The number that holds the loop together is an enterprise mNAV of 1.07. That is a seven percent cushion. Below 1.00 the machine reverses: issuing shares destroys value for existing holders, the ATM stops being usable, and the largest corporate buyer in this asset class goes quiet. It goes quiet precisely when bitcoin is falling, because that is when the premium disappears.

The other half of the same filing is being ignored altogether. Strategy’s BTC Monetization Program now authorises up to $5 billion of bitcoin sales. In June the board approved $1.25 billion. The authorisation to sell quadrupled in the same quarter the buying resumed, and $19.09 billion of share issuance capacity remains on the shelf. The market is treating the marginal corporate bid as structural. It is procyclical, and the paperwork says so.

Technical Snapshot

The structure is constructive and thin at the same time. August reclaimed the 200-day EMA at $73,414, which matters because that line was lost in the drawdown that took bitcoin from $124,740 to $58,566 over the past year. Price above it is the difference between a recovery and a bear market bounce.

The thin part is the distance. Spot is 4.6 percent above the 20-day EMA and 5.8 percent above the 200-day. In a market where a single hot inflation print can move bitcoin 4 percent in a session, those are one-day cushions rather than real buffers. That is exactly why today’s ISM matters more than its billing suggests.

Stocks

Europe is doing the honest thing this morning. The STOXX 600 is down 0.7 percent at 646.35, and the DAX leads the fall at minus 1.1 percent after German inflation accelerated to 2.9 percent. London is down 0.9 percent at 10,724.50 even with Brent up, which is unusual, because the FTSE is packed with oil majors like Shell and BP that normally cushion a crude rally. Paris holds up better at minus 0.4 percent. Asia closed quietly negative, with the Nikkei at 66,215 and Shanghai at 3,980, both down about 0.2 percent.

US futures point lower. Dow and S&P contracts are off around 0.5 percent and Nasdaq-100 futures around 0.8 percent, after the S&P closed Monday at 7,686.14. Today’s ISM cuts both ways, and it is worth saying which way. A soft headline survey with cooling prices paid is the best outcome for risk, because it removes the inflation excuse without signalling recession. A hot prices paid number with a firm headline is the worst, because it hands the hawks their evidence with no offsetting growth scare.

The VIX at 15.87 is the number that keeps me from getting carried away. Vol-targeting funds mechanically reduce exposure on a close through roughly 20, and we are nowhere near it. Until that changes, drawdowns in equities are discretionary rather than forced.

Flows and Rotation

No dominance chart today. Bitcoin dominance has sat near 58 percent on CoinGecko without a meaningful shift, so a chart of it would tell you nothing you cannot read in one line. The rotation worth noting is inside the alts: over seven days SUI is down 9.2 percent, DOGE down 8.4 percent and XRP down 6.9 percent, while bitcoin gave up only 1.5 percent. Risk is leaving the tail first, which is what usually happens before it leaves the head.

The ETH/BTC ratio sits at 0.0315. Ether beat bitcoin by eight points over the month and has held that gain through the hawkish turn, which is the one piece of genuine relative strength on the board.

Whale flow. Analyst Ali Martinez reported large wallets adding roughly 39,000 BTC over the past week, worth about $3 billion. I am tagging that as an estimate rather than a print, because cohort definitions differ between providers. Read alongside Strategy and Strive, the direction is accumulation, and it is happening above where bitcoin trades this morning.

ETF flows, Monday August 31. Bitcoin funds took in $216.7 million and ether funds $87.6 million. Tuesday’s figures are not published yet, because Farside posts with about a one-day lag.

Over the last five posted sessions bitcoin funds netted plus $803.6 million and ether funds plus $787.7 million. Treat that carefully. Flows settle a day late and they follow price, so money arriving after a 23 percent month is momentum behaving normally, not independent evidence that the rally is right. The one honest signal in the series is August 28, when bitcoin funds shed $201.9 million on the day Warsh spoke. That was the tape reacting to news rather than chasing it.

Netting supply against demand. Strategy took 4,603 BTC off the market last week, roughly $370 million, against about $804 million of ETF demand over five sessions. So the largest corporate holder has flipped from a known seller into a competing buyer, and that removes an overhang the market carried all summer. It also means the sell authorisation now sitting at $5 billion is unhedged risk rather than an active drag. Strategy’s next quarterly report is due in late October, well beyond this month’s catalysts.

Executive Summary

• US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, the first acknowledged strike since late July. Brent trades $91.18 and WTI $86.62.

Crude jumped more than three percent because America and Iran are shooting at each other again, but that is not why it matters. It matters because the man who now runs the Federal Reserve spent Friday telling Jackson Hole that inflation’s underlying trend has not improved, and expensive oil is the one input that makes his case for him. Every dollar Brent adds this week converts almost directly into September hike odds, and hike odds are what bitcoin has actually been trading since it left $63,000 four weeks ago.

The Macro Picture In One Screen

Look at what did not move today. Gold is flat, the dollar is slightly softer, high-yield credit spreads sit at 2.63%, and the ten-year barely twitched. Those are the four things that always move when a market genuinely fears a war, and none of them did. Only crude and fed funds futures repriced, which tells you the money is treating Larak Island as an inflation event rather than a conflict event.

The calendar does the rest of the work. Friday’s jobs report is the last real data before the Fed goes quiet on September 5, and it lands with July’s minus 23,000 payroll print still fresh. Then September 15 and 16 arrive back to back: the Senate’s procedural vote on crypto market structure, then the Fed. Two catalysts, one day apart, pulling in opposite directions for the same asset.

Where Things Stand

Here is the quant layer that everything above hangs on, with what each line actually means.

The one line that stands out is credit at 2.63%. Nothing in this table says stress except the Fed odds, and those are about prices, not fear.

Since Yesterday

Three things changed over the weekend, and only one of them is really about Iran.

The strike. US Central Command confirmed it hit two rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island on Sunday. Iranian state media had reported attacks on US bases in Jordan first. This is the first publicly acknowledged American strike on Iranian positions since late July, and it reversed several weeks of calm.

The repricing. Brent added more than three dollars and cleared $90 for the first time in weeks. Fed hike odds climbed from the high fifties toward 60.4%. Those two moves are the same move.

The Friday hangover. Warsh spoke at Jackson Hole on Friday and the crypto equities took the worst of it. Strategy closed down 7.3% and Coinbase down 6.3%, both far heavier than bitcoin itself. Both are indicated higher this morning.

Oil is now the Fed’s best argument, and crypto is the collateral

WHAT HAPPENED

Sunday’s exchange of fire between US and Iranian forces put Brent through $90 and WTI near $87. Equity futures slipped, with S&P contracts off 0.2% and Nasdaq 100 contracts off 0.2%. Bitcoin barely moved and is up 0.1% on the day at $78,266.

WHY IT MATTERS

The market spent August positioned for a Fed that had stopped mattering. July payrolls printed minus 23,000 on August 7, hike odds collapsed, and risk assets ran hard. Bitcoin went from $62,773 on August 1 to a high of $80,268 on August 25, a 24.3% month.

Then Warsh spoke on Friday and said the summer’s better inflation numbers do not convince him the underlying trend has improved. He also repeated that he will not give forward guidance. That combination removed the safety net the rally was leaning on, and positioning had no time to adjust before the weekend.

Now the transmission chain runs the other way, and it is worth spelling out. Expensive crude raises the price of petrol, of shipping, and of everything shipping touches, including food. That is inflation. Inflation is exactly what a central bank raises rates to fight. Higher rates pull money out of assets that pay no income, and bitcoin pays no income. The first three links there are well established. The fourth is the one I hold loosely, because bitcoin also trades as a liquidity asset and liquidity conditions are not tightening yet.

MY VIEW

I think the oil move is real and the panic around it is not. Iran has mined and threatened the Strait of Hormuz repeatedly through 2026 without closing it, and the market has learned to discount the headline. What the market has not learned to discount is a Fed chair who genuinely wants to hike into a soft labour market. That is the live risk, and Friday’s crypto equity selloff was the first honest read on it.

So I am flat-to-cautious rather than bearish. Bitcoin holding $78,000 while its own equity complex fell seven percent is a strong tape, not a weak one. But I would rather buy that strength after Friday’s payroll number than before it.

The strongest case against my view

If you believe the Fed hikes and crypto falls, you have to explain why credit spreads are at 2.63% and the dollar is falling. Both say financial conditions are still loose, and loose conditions have been the whole story for bitcoin this year. The bull case is simply that a single 25 basis point move from an already-restrictive level changes very little, while a CLARITY Act that finally clears the Senate changes the structural buyer base permanently. On that reading, September 15 outranks September 16 and this dip is the last cheap entry before it.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Whether Brent holds above $90 into Friday. Whether the spot ETF tape turns back positive after Friday’s outflow. And whether the seller shelf holds if we get a second down day, because that is where the largest corporate holder’s cost basis sits.

The band between $75,385 and $73,995 is the whole argument. Above it this is a pullback in an uptrend. Below it the August rally becomes a failed breakout.

Market Blind Spot

Everyone is watching whether Strategy is forced to sell more bitcoin. I think the framing is backwards, and the numbers say so.

Strategy holds 840,447 BTC at an average purchase price of $75,385. At $78,266 that stack is worth roughly $65.8bn against a $63.36bn cost, so the position is about $2.4bn in the money. That is the first time in months that selling would book a gain rather than a loss. Its three disposals this year were all done under duress, the last of them at an average of $64,262 during the first week of August, well below cost.

The market reads a rising bitcoin price as reducing the odds of Strategy selling, because it repairs the balance sheet. I read it the opposite way. The monetization program authorising up to $1.25bn of sales is still live. What has changed is that above cost, the company can fund its preferred dividends without printing a realised loss in front of shareholders. Price strength does not remove the seller. It removes the seller’s embarrassment.

Strategy files its weekly holdings update on Mondays and did nothing at all in the week to August 23. Today’s filing is the tell. If a company that sat out a 24% rally starts selling into $78,000, the overhead supply story returns immediately, and it returns at exactly the level everyone has marked as support.

Technical Snapshot

Bitcoin sits above every moving average on the ladder, which is what a healthy uptrend looks like. The 20-day at $73,995 has not been tested since the rally began, so we do not yet know whether it holds.

The detail that ties this back to today’s thesis is the gap. Price is 5.8% above the 20-day and only 2.6% below the three-month high, which means the risk-reward on a fresh long here is poor while a rate decision looms. There is a lot of air underneath and not much room above.

Positioning Deep-Dive

Monday’s closer look at how the market is actually positioned, rather than what it says.

Leverage is genuinely clean. Bitcoin’s open-interest weighted funding rate is around 0.0091% per eight hours and ether’s around 0.0063%, both from CoinGlass. The baseline most venues charge is 0.01%. So after a 24.3% month, longs are paying less than the default rate to hold their position. That is unusual and it is bullish, because it means the rally was not built on borrowed money.

Open interest tells the same story from a different angle. Roughly 696,450 BTC of futures are open, worth about $54.6bn, up 0.38% over twenty-four hours. CME holds 16.7% of that, which is the regulated, largely institutional slice. Open interest rising while funding stays flat means new positions are being opened by people who are not paying a premium for direction.

The liquidation pattern flipped mid-morning. Over twenty-four hours about $434.5m was liquidated across 106,940 traders, and longs took $288.0m of that. But narrow the window to four hours and 77% of the damage is on the short side. Traders who sold the strike headline were the ones who got hurt. That is the clearest evidence I have that the geopolitical panic is being faded rather than chased.

Retail and whales are on opposite sides. Wallets holding 100 BTC or more added roughly 43,000 coins over the past sixty days, and the largest cohort above 10,000 BTC added around 46,420. Meanwhile the smallest wallets, those between 0.1 and 1 BTC, are distributing about as hard as the accumulation score can register. Exchange balances fell by about 4,370 BTC in the last day to roughly 2.48m. None of this looks like a top.

Put together, the positioning data disagrees with the price action. That is why I am neutral rather than short.

Stocks

Europe is barely moving and London is shut. The STOXX 600 is off 0.1% at 654.58, with the DAX down 0.68% at 26,390.06 and the CAC up 0.15% at 8,413.42. The FTSE 100 has no print today because London is shut for the summer bank holiday. That matters more than it sounds. London’s index is stuffed with Shell and BP, so on a day crude jumps three percent, Europe’s most oil-heavy index cannot express it.

Asia closed before the repricing landed. The Nikkei finished down 0.14% at 66,311.93 and Shanghai closed up 0.86% at 3,986.30. Japan’s ten-year yield near 2.94% keeps a floor under the yen and a lid on exporters, which is the usual drag on the Nikkei this year.

US futures are soft into the last session of August. S&P contracts sit at 7,707.75, down 0.18%, and Nasdaq 100 contracts at 29,445.25, down 0.16%. That is a shrug, not a selloff, and it caps a strong month. The Dow is up around 2.1% in August, its fifth straight monthly gain. The S&P and Nasdaq Composite are up roughly 3% and 4%.

The week is genuinely two-sided. A weak set of labour numbers would kill the hike and lift everything, but it would also confirm that July’s minus 23,000 payroll print was a trend rather than noise, which is its own problem. A strong set removes the growth worry and hands Warsh his hike. VIX at 15.28 says the options market is charging almost nothing for either outcome, and mechanical de-risking by volatility-targeting funds does not begin until a close through roughly 20.

Flows And Rotation

Bitcoin dominance is 59.70% and moved about a third of a percent, so I am not putting a rotation chart in front of you today. The one-line version: money is sitting in bitcoin and leaving everything else, and the movers table below shows it better than a chart would.

Every one of those is green over thirty days and only Solana is green over seven. The rotation happened last week, not today.

On the whale side, the large cohorts have been buying steadily while the smallest wallets sell, and coins continue to leave exchanges. Nothing dramatic crossed the tape overnight.

One caution on reading any of this as proof. ETF flows settle a day late and they chase price by construction, so nine straight days of inflows after a rally is momentum behaviour, not independent confirmation that anyone believes anything. The more informative print is Friday’s reversal, because that one went against the previous day’s price.

Corporate treasury supply. Strategy made no purchases and no sales in the week to August 23 and still holds 840,447 BTC. Its next weekly filing is due today.

Worth Knowing

Europe’s rulebook is up for revision and the window shuts today. The European Commission’s consultation on reviewing MiCA closes on August 31. Whatever comes back shapes how EU-licensed venues operate into 2027, and it is the one policy process outside Washington that can move listings and liquidity for European holders.

Ireland has barred crypto from its state savings scheme. The scheme holds around $203bn of deposits. It is a small decision on its own, but it is the kind of national carve-out that shows MiCA authorisation does not automatically buy access to domestic distribution channels.

There is a version of the last decade in crypto that has nothing to do with price charts or laser eyes. In this version, the interesting thing that happened is much more boring and much more consequential: a handful of private companies started issuing dollars, and roughly $300 billion of them are now outstanding.

Not dollar investments. Dollars. Tokens that sit in a wallet, are worth one dollar, move in seconds, and settle without a bank in the middle.

For most of that period this was plumbing for traders. It is not plumbing anymore. Stablecoin issuers are now a recognisable buyer of U.S. Treasury bills, a genuine competitor to remittance companies, and a working dollar account in countries where the real thing is hard to get. As of July 2025 they have their own federal statute, with hard compliance deadlines arriving in 2027 and 2028.

That statute is the whole story now. It quietly sorted the industry into two piles: coins that were built to be licensed, and coins that were not. The first pile is small, young, and growing. Its largest member did not exist eighteen months ago.

How the market actually got here

The shape of that line is the argument, so it is worth two paragraphs.

Tether invented the category in 2014 and it stayed small until DeFi pulled total supply from roughly $25 billion at the end of 2020 to well over $150 billion in 2021. Then came the reckoning. TerraUSD, an algorithmic coin that held its peg through incentives rather than reserves, collapsed to nothing in May 2022. In March 2023 USDC briefly broke its peg when Silicon Valley Bank failed and part of its reserves were trapped there. Both events taught the same lesson: a stablecoin is exactly as safe as the least liquid thing behind it.

The industry rebuilt on that lesson. Supply climbed back to around $206 billion by the end of 2024, then rose about 50 percent through 2025 to roughly $307 billion as the GENIUS Act passed and a wave of new, deliberately conservative coins launched. In 2026 the market has plateaued near $300 billion. Growth stopped being the story. Sorting winners under the new law became the story.

Two incumbents, and everyone else

Tether is about 61 percent of the market on its own. Add Circle’s USDC and you have roughly 85 percent. Every other dollar token in existence competes for the remaining 15 percent, which sounds bleak until you notice where the new money is actually going.

The incumbents won the offshore era. The offshore era is the one that is ending.

Under the GENIUS Act, from 18 January 2027 unlicensed issuance in the United States is generally prohibited. From 18 July 2028, U.S. digital-asset service providers generally may not offer or sell payment stablecoins unless a licensed issuer created them. That second date is the one nobody in the industry is relaxed about. It is not a rule about who may issue. It is a rule about who may distribute, and it puts every American exchange in the position of having to justify each listing it carries.

Dates as legislated or proposed.

In August 2026 the Treasury issued a notice of proposed rulemaking defining what counts as issuing and as offering or selling a coin in the United States, including the conditions under which foreign coins can stay on U.S. platforms. That rulemaking is the live fight over whether offshore coins keep their American distribution after 2028, and it is the highest-stakes open question in the sector.

Which brings us to the pile nobody was paying attention to.

The second wave

A small cohort of dollar tokens was built from day one for the world that arrives in 2027. Trust-company issuance. Reserves in cash, short-dated Treasuries and government money-market funds. Published attestations. No yield paid to holders, which the statute now requires anyway.

Approximate market capitalisation

Rank them and the result is not what you would expect. PayPal has a global payments network and three years of head start. Ripple has a settlement business and an institutional client list. Paxos has a decade of regulated issuance behind it.

The largest of the four is the youngest, and it launched in March 2025.

USD1

USD1 comes from World Liberty Financial and is issued and custodied by BitGo Trust, a South Dakota chartered trust company that has since moved toward a national trust-bank charter. Each token is a contractual claim on one dollar, redeemable by eligible BitGo customers, backed by cash, short-term Treasuries, U.S. government money-market funds and cash equivalents. Monthly attestations and proof-of-reserves tooling are part of the design. It runs on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, Tron and others.

Read that paragraph again and notice what is missing. There is no clever mechanism. No synthetic hedge, no overcollateralised vault, no governance token deciding what counts as collateral. It is the boring structure, which after 2022 and 2023 is the only structure regulators will accept at scale.

Going from zero to roughly $4 billion and a top-ten position in eighteen months is not normal, and the turnover is unusual for the size: often hundreds of millions to more than a billion dollars a day. An early institutional transaction saw Abu Dhabi investor MGX settle a reported $2 billion Binance-related investment in USD1.

USD1 comes from World Liberty Financial, a Trump family-backed venture, with the coin listed across multiple chains and high daily turnover. The coin is built on the compliant side of a line that becomes legally binding in five months.

Why the boring dollars win

Published projections against today’s level.

Forecasts for 2030 run from roughly $700 billion (JPMorgan) to $1.9 trillion in Citi’s base case and $4 trillion in its bull case, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly floating a figure near $3 trillion. Morningstar projects about $1.45 trillion by 2035. These are scenarios built on adoption assumptions, not measurements, and the thirteen-fold spread between them should tell you how much confidence to assign.

But notice the floor. Every published forecast sits above today’s level. The disagreement is about whether this becomes a large market or an enormous one, not whether it grows. And every one of those scenarios routes through the same bottleneck: after July 2028, the coins that reach American users are the coins a licensed issuer created.

The market has already priced part of this. Following the GENIUS Act, IMF-linked analysis estimated an order-of-$300 billion hit to incumbent payment-company valuations, with cross-border names hit hardest. Equity investors are treating regulated stablecoins as a real competitor to payments incumbents, not a crypto sideshow.

The bottom line

Dollar stablecoins are about 1.3 percent of U.S. M2, roughly one dollar of on-chain money for every $75 of broad money supply. As a monetary phenomenon that is small, and anyone telling you the banking system has been replaced is selling something.

But the same $300 billion, pointed almost entirely at short-dated Treasury bills, is not small in that market at all. That asymmetry is the thing to hold onto. Stablecoins are minor as money and material as a buyer of government debt, and every serious policy argument about them flows from it.

The next eighteen months are not about invention. They are about licences. The offshore dollar will keep trading offshore, and it will keep being enormous. But the onshore dollar is being rebuilt from scratch right now by a handful of issuers who read the statute before they wrote the code, and the league table for that market looks nothing like the league table for the old one.

The quiet dollarisation was never going to be announced. It is just going to show up in the reserve reports.

Executive Summary

With the expiry settled, nothing is holding bitcoin in place any more, and the $81,000 to $86,000 wall is still where this goes to be decided. For five sessions the option book did the work of a ceiling. Dealers hedging into this morning’s settlement kept price close to where it already sat. That is why a warm inflation print on Wednesday, and the second biggest single-day stock gain in history on Thursday, both produced almost nothing in crypto. The mechanism expired at 08:00 UTC. Warsh speaks into a market with no shock absorber left.

The Macro Picture in One Screen

The backdrop has not moved all week, and that is the point. The ten-year sits at 4.69% and credit spreads are at 270 basis points. The VIX closed at 15.21 and the dollar has not moved. Nothing in that screen is forcing anyone to do anything. Whatever happens after four this afternoon is about the speech and the order book, not about conditions.

From here the calendar empties out fast. After today the Fed goes quiet on Sep 5 and stays quiet, which makes this keynote the last unfiltered word for eleven days. Then Sep 15 and 16 stack the Senate’s CLARITY vote and the FOMC decision on consecutive days, which is the real cluster.

Where Things Stand

Six numbers set the weather, and five of them have not budged all week.

A VIX near its lowest of the year going into a new Fed chair’s first keynote is the one thing on this list worth staring at. Cheap protection and a two-sided event are how small moves turn into big ones.

Since Yesterday

Three things resolved overnight, and one of them changes how I read the ETF tape.

The expiry passed without a shock. $6.44bn of bitcoin options settled on Deribit at 08:00 UTC, across roughly 81,700 contracts. Max pain sat near $70,000, well below spot. Price never made a move towards it. That is the cleanest evidence yet that the pin was holding rather than dragging.

The ETF streak is confirmed at nine sessions. Farside has now posted the full Aug 27 rows. Bitcoin funds took plus $242.3m and ethereum funds plus $225.8m. That is nine green sessions in a row for both. Underneath the headline there was real dispersion: BlackRock’s IBIT took plus $277.6m on the same day Fidelity’s FBTC gave back $83.6m.

Nvidia had a historic day and bitcoin ignored it. Nvidia rose 8.74% and added $442bn of market value, the second largest one-day gain by any stock on record. The S&P closed at 7,731. Bitcoin finished the same session at $80,258 and has since given that back.

The Pin Is Off And Nobody Has Noticed Yet

What happened

Bitcoin has spent five sessions in a narrow band. It topped at $81,265 on Tuesday and was turned back by the 50-week moving average. It dipped through Wednesday’s inflation print, closed Thursday at $80,258, and now trades at $79,529.

This morning at 08:00 UTC, $6.44bn of bitcoin options expired on Deribit. Around 81,700 contracts, split 44,639 calls to 37,061 puts. Deribit put max pain near $70,000.

Price did not go anywhere near max pain. It settled quietly and the book cleared.

Why it matters

Most people read a large expiry as a magnet that drags price towards max pain. That is usually wrong, and this week shows why. What actually happens is that the banks and market makers on the other side of those options hold offsetting positions in spot and futures. As settlement approaches they trim those hedges, and the trimming leans against whichever way price is moving. It is a damper, not a magnet.

That damper explains the strangest thing about this week. Wednesday’s inflation report ran a tenth above forecast, which in a normal week moves crypto. It did almost nothing. Thursday delivered the second largest one-day gain by any stock in history, and bitcoin closed the session more or less where it started. Both of those should have produced a move. The option book absorbed them.

The positioning was wrong in a specific way. Traders spent the week arguing about whether Warsh would be hawkish, and about whether the ETF streak would hold. Very few noticed that the market they were watching had been mechanically anaesthetised, so none of the evidence they were collecting from price meant very much.

Now the anaesthetic has worn off. Warsh speaks at 10:00 ET into a tape where dealer hedging cushions nothing. The VIX is near its lowest reading of 2026. The nearest overhead supply starts 2.0% above spot at the 50-week average and thickens all the way up. The same speech that would have produced a shrug yesterday can produce a real move today.

My view

I am not positioning ahead of the speech, and I would treat this week’s calm as information about the option book rather than information about demand. Five quiet sessions told us the damper worked. They told us almost nothing about whether buyers want bitcoin at $80,000.

The structure above has not changed since Tuesday. Long-term holders sit near break even between $81,000 and $86,000. The first heavy pocket of coins that never left self-custody starts at $80,800. Dealers flip from helping to fighting around $82,300. Nobody has tested any of it since Tuesday’s rejection. The wall is not weaker for having been left alone.

So my marker is unchanged and I will keep using it. A settle above $83,300 with ETF money still arriving says the overhead supply is being eaten. A close under $75,500 says the August breakout failed. Between those two I have no strong opinion, and this afternoon is far more likely to produce noise inside the range than a clean break of either end.

The strongest case against my view

The strongest argument against me is that I am treating a quiet week as artificial when it might simply be a market that has found fair value. Bitcoin absorbed a warm inflation print and a historic equity melt-up without breaking either way, which is what genuine two-sided liquidity looks like. Whale cohorts have added roughly 43,000 coins over sixty days on Bloomberg’s read of the data, so the marginal holder is accumulating rather than distributing. If that is right, the option book was incidental, the range is real support, and $86,000 falls to the first serious push rather than capping anything.

What I am watching

• $81,085, the 50-week moving average, which has not been retested since Tuesday

• $83,300 on a closing basis, still the absorption marker

• $75,500, the Aug 20 breakout base, and $62,900 below it

• Whether the Aug 28 print extends the run to ten, and whether Fidelity’s outflow repeats

• How much of Thursday’s 11.5% move in Strategy survives the speech

Worth Knowing

Charles Schwab is adding solana, avalanche and chainlink. That widens mainstream brokerage access beyond bitcoin and ether for the first time in a meaningful way. It is a slow structural bid rather than a headline, and it is the sort of thing that shows up in flow data months later rather than in today’s price.

The SEC’s Regulation Crypto Assets proposal is now in the open. Published on Aug 18, it would exempt raises up to $5m for four years and up to $75m for twelve months, and set out when a crypto asset falls under securities law. It matters because it gives the agency a path that does not depend on the Senate. If CLARITY stalls on Sep 15, this is the fallback that stops the year being a total loss for US crypto rulemaking.

Market Blind Spot

Strategy is now worth less than the bitcoin it owns, and it rallied 11.5% anyway

Strategy holds 840,447 bitcoin. At this morning’s price that is about $66.8bn of coins. The company’s entire market value is $52.8bn. The market is pricing the stock at roughly 0.79 times the assets on its balance sheet.

That discount is the whole explanation for a thing people keep finding mysterious. Strategy raised roughly $2bn of equity last week and bought no bitcoin with it. Commentators read that as a loss of nerve. It is not. When your shares trade below the value of your coins, issuing stock to buy more coins hands value from existing shareholders to new ones. Not buying is the correct decision, and it is forced.

Then on Thursday the stock rose 11.5% while bitcoin went sideways. Both things are true at once and they point the same way: the equity is trading as a leveraged option on a re-rating back towards one times assets, not as a bitcoin proxy. A 21% discount is a lot of room to close on sentiment alone.

Here is what the market is underpricing. The discount is also a countdown. A treasury company that cannot issue equity accretively and carries fixed obligations eventually has to fund them from somewhere, and the June monetization authorisation for up to $1.25bn of bitcoin sales is still live. Cash cover has improved, so this is not imminent. But every day the stock trades under one times assets, the probability that the largest corporate holder becomes a seller goes up rather than down. Nobody is pricing that into bitcoin. They are pricing it into MSTR.

Technical Snapshot

The ladder has not changed since Tuesday, which is the most useful thing about it. Five sessions of chop have left every level intact.

Bitcoin sits 2.0% under the 50-week moving average and 4.7% under the level that would tell me the wall is being absorbed. Tuesday’s $81,265 high is still the ceiling of record, and it has not been challenged since.

Below, this week’s range base near $77,000 is the first thing that matters, 3.2% down. Under that the Aug 20 breakout base at $75,500 is the level with real work behind it. Nothing between here and there has been defended, because nothing has needed defending yet.

Japan’s ten-year at 2.93% is up again and remains the quiet risk. When it rises while shares fall, the carry trade unwinds, money goes home to Tokyo and liquidity drains from everything else. Today it is doing the opposite. The Nikkei rose 0.7% and the yen sits at 159.6, so the carry trade is intact.

Stocks

Thursday belonged entirely to Nvidia. The company reported $96.2bn of quarterly revenue, up 106% on the year. The stock closed 8.74% higher at $227.98. That added $442bn of market value in a session, the second largest one-day gain by any stock on record. The S&P 500 closed at 7,731 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.4%.

This morning US futures are giving a little back before the keynote. Nasdaq-100 futures are down 0.5% and S&P futures are flat. That is positioning, not a change of mind.

European cash markets are firmer and led by the market that lagged yesterday. The CAC 40 is up 0.9% at 8,393. The DAX has added 0.5% and the FTSE 100 just 0.1%. London keeps underperforming because its index leans on oil majors like Shell and BP, and Brent slipping to $88.28 takes the shine off that trade.

Asia closed before Europe opened. The Nikkei rose 0.7% to 66,595 as the Nvidia read-through reached Tokyo’s chip names. Shanghai edged down to 3,952. Australia’s ASX 200 slipped a tenth of a percent.

The two-sided part of the keynote. Warsh has cover to sound hawkish with core inflation at 3.3%, and the market carries only a third to 40% odds of the hike that would follow, so there is room for yields to jump. But he inherits an economy growing at 1.5%, a symposium themed on payments and financial innovation, and a Bank of America survey in which 69% of managers already expect a neutral tone. Neutral is priced. Both tails are live.

VIX at 15.21 is the regime read and it is near the 2026 low. The line that matters is a close through roughly 20, where volatility-targeting funds cut exposure automatically. We are a long way below it, which is precisely why protection is cheap today.

Scorecard: How This Week Aged

Friday, so here is how this week’s thinking actually aged. Written before the speech, so today is not graded.

What the market said on Monday, and what happened. The consensus going into the week was that $80,000 was a ceiling and that Wednesday’s inflation print would break the August rally. Headline PCE came in at 3.7%, a tenth above forecast. Bitcoin dipped for about an hour and closed the session up 0.59%. On Thursday it went back above $80,000 for the first time in 101 days. The bearish case was tested and it did not work.

The expiry call was wrong, and it was wrong in a useful direction. Plenty of desks argued price would be dragged towards max pain near $70,000 into today’s settlement. It was not, and it was never close. If you traded that view you paid for it. The lesson is that max pain describes where option sellers would prefer price to be, not where hedging flow actually pushes it.

What I framed correctly. The 50-week moving average at $81,085 has capped every attempt this week. Tuesday’s $81,265 remains the high. Treating that line rather than round numbers as the real resistance was the right frame, and it still is.

What I got wrong. I treated today as a two-event day, with the expiry weighing about as much as the keynote. The expiry was a non-event. I over-weighted dealer positioning as a source of direction when its actual role was to suppress volatility, and those are different jobs. The correction is that the pin explains why this week was quiet, not where price goes next.

The thread I flagged that has aged badly. I have been leaning on corporate treasuries and dormant whales as the underpriced supply risk. Bloomberg’s read of the cohort data has large holders adding roughly 43,000 coins over sixty days, which cuts against the distribution story at the aggregate level. Individual whales sold into the rally. The cohort did not. I am demoting that from a thesis to a watch item.

Flows and Rotation

No dominance chart today. Bitcoin’s share of the market is 57.7%, up two tenths of a point from yesterday, and rotation is not part of this story. Solana is the only major up on the day. It is back when something moves.

Whale flow is genuinely two-sided this week and I want to be careful with it. Bloomberg’s read of the cohort data has large holders adding roughly 43,000 coins over the past sixty days, worth about $2.8bn. Against that, one dormant holder sold 7,700 coins for around $577m into the rally. Metaplanet also moved 1,000 coins into Coinbase Prime on Aug 25. The aggregate is accumulating. The loudest individual prints are not.

Nine green sessions in a row now, Aug 17 through Aug 27. Bitcoin funds have taken plus $3,044m across that run. Ethereum funds have taken plus $1,406m.

The last five sessions alone brought bitcoin funds plus $1,434m and ethereum funds plus $898m.

Aug 27 is worth breaking out because two big funds moved against each other. BlackRock’s IBIT took plus $277.6m while Fidelity’s FBTC gave back $83.6m. A rare outflow from a large fund into a strongly positive day is worth noting rather than smoothing over.

One caution stands. Flows settle a day late and they chase price, so nine green days after a 25% month is momentum behaving normally rather than proof of conviction. The more interesting print is ethereum’s. Its plus $225.8m is the largest single day of the whole run, and it landed on the session bitcoin reclaimed $80,000 rather than ahead of it.

Corporate treasury supply

Strategy has not bought or sold a coin since the Aug 17 to Aug 23 window closed, so the position is unchanged at 840,447 bitcoin. What has changed is the price of the equity against it. The stock rose 11.5% on Thursday to $137.40. That still leaves a $52.8bn market value against roughly $66.8bn of coins. The June authorisation to sell up to $1.25bn of bitcoin remains live, though CoinDesk’s read of the filings puts net leverage near zero with about four years of preferred dividends covered. Netting it against the ETF tape, the largest corporate holder is neither bidding nor supplying right now, which makes the ETF tape the only clean demand signal. This week that tape ran green for nine sessions straight.

Nvidia cleared the bar that mattered, and equities are paying up for it this morning. Crypto is not. Bitcoin has gone nowhere on the news while Solana and ether run, XRP fades, and CoinDesk reports traders starting to price a September hike. What decides today is whether the equity risk appetite drags bitcoin through $80,894 before Friday’s expiry pins the tape.

Six readings frame the day, and two of them are carrying all the tension.

The stand-out is the first row. Equities are celebrating while the rates market leans the other way, and crypto is caught between the two.

Since Yesterday

Four things changed overnight, and the most important one was not Nvidia.

The ETF bid passed its test. Yesterday I wrote that the real test of the fund flows was whether they survive a red day. They did. Bitcoin funds took $232.2m on Wednesday while price fell, and ether funds took $192.4m. That is the first evidence this bid is more than momentum chasing.

Nvidia cleared the bar. The guide for next quarter is $108bn, where Wall Street wanted $104.2bn. The CFO then put 70% on fiscal 2028 growth. The stock is up 6% premarket, and AWS agreed to buy two million GPUs alongside the report.

Crypto rotated instead of rallying. Solana is up 7.9% and ether 2.8%, while bitcoin added 1% and XRP slipped. CoinDesk’s morning read: traders are starting to bet on a Fed hike, and the coins most levered to rate relief are lagging.

Wednesday’s flush hit the other side. About $324m of positions were liquidated, and roughly $270m of them were longs. Last week the forced sellers were shorts. The tape is now punishing both directions, which is what a genuine battle at a level looks like.

Lead Story

Nvidia cleared its bar. Bitcoin still has to clear $80,894.

What happened

Nvidia reported after Wednesday’s close and beat on every line that matters. Revenue rose 106% year on year to $96.2bn. Next quarter’s guide is $108bn against $104.2bn expected. The CFO put a number, 70%, on fiscal 2028 growth, and the CEO said demand runs well above that but supply cannot keep up.

Equities responded the way they were positioned to, with tech futures leading the move. Bitcoin’s response was one more tap of $80,000, the third in a week, without a break of Tuesday’s $80,894 high.

Why it matters

The market was positioned for Nvidia to be the tide that lifts everything, because that is what it has been for two years. The assumption baked into crypto books is that bitcoin is a high-beta Nasdaq trade. This week is quietly breaking that assumption.

Look at what actually moved. The AI complex rallied. Bitcoin did not, and the fade in XRP came with a CoinDesk headline about hike bets, not about chips. The marginal buyer of crypto right now is watching the September Fed meeting, and a hike bet strengthens the dollar case against non-yielding assets.

There is a second mechanical layer. Friday’s $6.4bn options expiry is struck around exactly these levels, and dealer hedging tends to hold price near big strikes into the cut. A pin at $80,000 is not a verdict on the rally. It is plumbing.

My view

I still will not pay the round number, but my reason has changed. Yesterday it was spent fuel. Today it is sequencing.

The bull case has actually improved. The ETF bid survived a red day, Strategy has stopped being a forced seller story, and equities are risk-on again. What has not improved is the thing that gates the next leg: rates. Until the hike chatter resolves, every push at the highs is fighting the Fed as well as the dealers.

Friday is the fulcrum. The expiry releases the pin in the same session Warsh speaks. If he sounds untroubled by inflation, the path through the gate opens with nothing mechanical standing in the way. That is a setup worth waiting a day for.

The strongest case against my view

Waiting for Friday may mean paying $84,000 instead of $80,000. Positioning is still light, with futures open interest near five-month lows, and the ETF bid just proved it buys dips.

If the equity rally spills over today, the break can come before the expiry rather than after it, and the hike chatter is still a minority view priced at roughly one chance in three.

Thin markets break out badly when everyone is waiting for the same signal.

What I am watching

• Jobless claims at 8:30 ET. A weak print undercuts the rate worries fast.

• Any break of the gate before Friday, which would tell me the bid is stronger than the dealers.

• Warsh tomorrow around 10:00 ET, his first Jackson Hole keynote as chair, on a payments-and-innovation theme.

• Solana follow-through above $100, because the rotation says risk appetite inside crypto is healthy even while bitcoin waits.

• Tonight’s ETF print. A second inflow on a stalled tape would confirm the dip-buying pattern.

Worth Knowing

The SEC is reviving a crypto custody rule. The regulator is rebuilding a rule the prior administration failed to land, governing where investment advisers can park client crypto. The approach is still under wraps. Custody rules decide which institutions can hold coins at scale, so this lands directly on the ETF and adviser bid this report tracks daily.

Hong Kong listed its first combined bitcoin and gold ETF today. MicroBit’s product went live on HKEX this morning. One more regulated on-ramp in Asia, and a small but real widening of the buyer base beyond the US funds.

Market Blind Spot

The trade everyone still has on is the one that stopped working this week: crypto as a leveraged Nasdaq position.

Watch the two tapes side by side. Nvidia delivered the best AI print of the year, Nasdaq futures added 1%, and South Korea’s chip-heavy index jumped 1.5%. Bitcoin’s response was a third failed tap of the same level. On Wednesday the divergence ran the other way: equities closed flat while XRP fell 5% on rising hike bets.

The correlation did not die of natural causes. It broke because the marginal driver changed. Equity investors are pricing AI cash flows, which Nvidia just underwrote for another year. Crypto’s marginal buyer is pricing the September Fed meeting, where the live risk is a hike. Those are different bets, and this week they pointed in opposite directions.

The practical consequence: hedging crypto exposure with Nasdaq shorts, or treating an AI rally as automatic crypto fuel, no longer works mechanically. The asset that trades on the Fed is the one to size around 16 September, not around earnings season. Almost nobody has repriced that yet.

Spot sits at the ceiling of the shelf, 1.1% under the $80,894 gate. Three taps of $80,000 in a week without a break is a market waiting for permission, not one being rejected.

Below, the structure is unchanged. The shelf floor is $76,000, the 20 August breakout base is $72,475, and only a loss of that base would erase the week. Nothing in the last two sessions has threatened either level.

The tie to the thesis is simple. The gate is mechanical until Friday, so a clean break before then would be genuine strength. After the expiry and Warsh, a break tells you less about the bid and more about the news.

The Nvidia print split the world’s markets along one line: chips or no chips.

Asia showed it first. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 1.5% and Shanghai rose 1.1%, both riding the AI supply chain. The Nikkei slipped 0.2% as Japan’s chip names took profits, and Australia fell 1% with no tech to lean on.

Europe is telling the same story at midday. The DAX is flat at 26,307, held up by its semiconductor names, which CNBC has up 1.5% as a group. The CAC is down 0.9% and the FTSE 100 down 0.8%, and London’s problem is simple: it owns oil majors and banks, not chipmakers.

US futures split the same way. Nasdaq-100 futures are up 1.0% at 29,594 and S&P futures up 0.4%, while Dow futures are flat. Okta is up sharply premarket on earnings alongside Nvidia’s 6% gain.

Both directions of today’s risk are real. Jobless claims at 8:30 ET, with a prior of 206k, feed straight into the hike debate: a soft number calms it, a strong one feeds it. And Nvidia’s own bar is now so high that a fade of the premarket gain, which has happened after most of its recent beats, would drag sentiment with it.

VIX is 14.90 and falling. The mechanical de-risking line, a close through roughly 20, is moving further away, and with the monthly equity expiry past, dealer hedging in stocks is no longer damping moves.

Netting the supply

The treasury story finally moved. Per CoinDesk’s read of the filings, Strategy has cut net leverage to near zero, with its cash pile now nearly matching its convertible debt and close to four years of preferred dividends covered. Holdings are steady at 840,447 coins and the equity trades at roughly 0.80 times the value of its bitcoin per CoinGecko’s tracker. The board’s $1.25bn sale authorization still exists, but a de-levered Strategy has far less reason to use it. The known seller overhead I have flagged since June just got smaller, and that is quietly bullish for the netting math.

Bitcoin has now spent two sessions failing to hold $80,000, and the tape underneath it has changed character. Futures open interest fell to a five-month low while price rose. That is the signature of shorts being forced out rather than buyers arriving. The morning’s test is now behind us: core PCE printed exactly in line, which keeps the Fed parked and hands the rest of the day to Nvidia.

The morning’s event has resolved. Core PCE came in on consensus, stocks barely moved, and the day’s remaining weight sits entirely on Nvidia after the close. Friday brings Warsh, and this year’s symposium theme is financial innovation and payments, which is unusually close to home for anyone holding digital assets. After that the calendar goes quiet until 15 September, when the CLARITY cloture vote and the Fed decision land on consecutive days.

Where Things Stand

Six readings tell you what the market thinks is at stake this morning. Here they are with the jargon stripped out.

One thing stands out across those rows. Every gauge of stress slept straight through the inflation print, which tells you the market always believed the consensus number.

Since Yesterday

Four things have changed since yesterday’s close, and the biggest one landed at 8:30 New York time.

The inflation test passed quietly. Core PCE rose 0.2% on the month and 3.3% on the year, both matching consensus. Headline ran 3.7%. Analysts read it as giving the Fed room to stay on hold, and equities barely reacted.

Crude broke. Iran and Oman discussed a temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, and Washington’s new sanctions package stopped short of hitting Iran’s trading partners. WTI fell 3.1% to $79.80. Brent fell 3.0% to $85.91. That closes a thread that has hung over this market since July, and it does so in the disinflationary direction.

Bitcoin gave back the handle. It printed Tuesday’s high, drifted lower all afternoon and has now slipped below $78,000 to $77,892. The altcoins gave back more than bitcoin did. The movers table below has the detail.

Asia closed green, the US opened flat. The Nikkei and Shanghai both added 0.6% overnight. At the New York open the S&P 500 is off 0.1%, the Dow 0.2% and the Nasdaq 0.3%, with Nvidia itself up about 2%.

The squeeze is over. The calendar takes it from here.

What happened

Bitcoin rose roughly 25% in a week, from near $63,000. It peaked at $80,894 on Tuesday. Over that same stretch futures open interest fell to 587,600 BTC, a five-month low. Around $3.3bn of short positions were liquidated across crypto. More than $1bn of bitcoin shorts went in a single hour near the top.

Funding on perpetual futures flipped positive but stayed below 10% annualised. That is a market where longs are paying to be long, not a market where they are piling in.

Why it matters

Open interest is the total value of futures contracts still open. When price and open interest rise together, new money is arriving. When price rises while open interest collapses, existing positions are being closed out. Last week was firmly the second kind.

The market was positioned wrong for a simple reason. Through mid-August bitcoin ground lower for weeks, and being short was the comfortable trade. Then two things landed inside three days.

The Treasury doubled the maximum size of certain long-dated bond buyback operations, which pushed yields down and softened the dollar. The president then used a White House meeting to press Congress on the CLARITY Act. Shorts that had felt safe suddenly were not, and there were nowhere near enough willing sellers on the other side.

That explains both the violence of the move and why it is stalling now. A squeeze ends when the forced buyers run out. There is no longer any mechanism that has to buy.

My view

I am not paying up here. The squeeze did its job and the fuel gauge reads empty.

That five-month low in open interest cuts both ways. It means there is no crowded long left to flush, which limits how ugly a pullback gets. It also means nobody is being forced to buy. From here the market needs a genuine bid, and genuine bids come from macro, not from stop losses.

The first honest test came and went this morning. Core PCE at 3.3% keeps the September hike at bay without giving anyone a reason to buy. That is a pass, not a push, and it leaves Nvidia tonight as the only catalyst left on today’s card.

The strongest case against my view

The ETF bid is not a squeeze. US spot bitcoin funds have absorbed $2.08bn over five sessions, and that is cash settling into custody rather than a stop loss firing.

Crude has now fallen three days running on real diplomatic progress, and cheaper energy feeds directly into the inflation series the Fed watches.

If Warsh sounds relaxed on Friday, the same thin positioning cuts the other way. There is very little standing in the path of another leg up.

What I am watching

• Nvidia after the close, now the only catalyst left today. Options price a very large move in either direction.

• Whether $76,000 holds on any flush, because it is the floor that last week’s advance built.

• Warsh on Friday morning, and how much he says about payments and digital assets.

• Whether ETF inflows survive a red day. That, not their size, is the real test of the bid.

• Friday’s $6.4bn bitcoin options expiry, which can amplify whatever move Nvidia starts.

Worth Knowing

Coinbase picked Chainlink to price its tokenized stocks. LINK will supply the oracle feed behind Coinbase’s newly launched tokenized equities on Base. This is one of the few announcements this year that attaches a named token to a live revenue product. The market did not care much, with LINK down 1.1% today.

The industry’s political money has moved to November. A Coinbase-backed advocacy group endorsed 32 midterm candidates this week, while the CLARITY Act sits stalled in the Senate. Read that as the industry hedging. The bill now has a date, a cloture vote on 15 September, and it needs 60 votes to clear a filibuster.

Market Blind Spot

Everyone is netting ETF inflows against price. Almost nobody is netting them against the buyer who quietly left the building.

Strategy raised roughly $2bn of stock last week and bought no bitcoin with it. Its holdings sat unchanged at 840,447 coins through 23 August. Instead it earmarked about $1.6bn as a fresh cash pool for treasury operations and buybacks, on top of a dollar reserve of $5.1bn.

The arithmetic explains the decision. Those coins are worth roughly $66bn at this morning’s price. The common stock is worth about $49bn. So the equity changes hands at around three quarters of the value of the coins it sits on, and there is debt and preferred stock ranking ahead of it.

When your shares trade below the value of your assets, issuing shares to buy more of those assets makes every existing holder poorer per coin. Saylor is doing the rational thing. The consequence is that the largest structural buyer of the last cycle has switched itself off. Its board also holds authority for up to $1.25bn of bitcoin sales, approved in June.

That leaves the ETF tape as the only structural bid, and it is being celebrated against nothing. Netting it against known supply is the calculation I would want done before anyone calls five days of inflows bullish.

Technical Snapshot

Tuesday’s $80,894 high is the only thing standing between here and $85,000. It has been touched once and not held. Above that, $85,000 is where the summer downtrend genuinely breaks.

Underneath, $76,000 is the floor of the shelf last week built, and every gain from that run sits inside the band. Below it, $72,475 is where the 20 August move started. Losing that would mean the week produced nothing at all.

Tie that back to the thesis. A soft inflation print does not have to be good. It only has to avoid being bad. The level it needs to clear afterwards is $80,894, and nothing below that changes my stance.

Wednesday Deep-Dive: On-Chain

The exchange tape and the ETF tape told opposite stories last week, and only one of them made headlines.

Bitcoin holders distributed into strength. One unidentified whale sold 7,700 BTC across three days, worth about $576m. A single block in that run was 2,700 coins. Jump Crypto sent 1,140 BTC to Binance. Metaplanet deposited 1,000 BTC to Coinbase. Coins moving onto an exchange are coins being prepared to sell.

Put that against the flows. That is roughly 9,840 bitcoin from three named sources alone, around $745m at reported prices. Set against $2.08bn of ETF buying over the same five sessions, more than a third of the visible institutional bid was absorbed by sellers you can actually identify.

Ether looked different. A large holder pulled 10,500 ETH off OKX, about $20m. Withdrawals are the mirror image of deposits, because coins leaving an exchange are usually coins heading into storage.

The split is the point. Holders were handing bitcoin to buyers and taking ether off the market. The fund flows agree. Ether products absorbed $886m over five sessions against a market roughly a fifth the size of bitcoin’s, which is a far heavier bid per dollar of market value.

Stocks

New York opened flat on the in-line print. The S&P 500 is off 0.1% near 7,670, the Dow is off 0.2% and the Nasdaq is off 0.3%. Nvidia is the exception, up about 2% into its own report.

Europe spent the day marking time. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up 0.2% at 6,469 and the DAX is flat at 26,272. The CAC 40 leads at plus 0.5%, while London’s FTSE 100 is unchanged.

London is the interesting one. The FTSE is packed with oil majors like Shell and BP, so a 3% fall in crude should be dragging it lower. It is not, which tells you the rest of the index is quietly offsetting the energy hit.

Asia closed green across the board. The Nikkei rose 0.6% to 66,262. Shanghai rose 0.6% to 3,913. Hong Kong added 0.6% and Korea 1.0%. Cheaper oil is a direct positive for energy importers, and Japan, China and Korea all qualify.

MSTR is $124.68, down 1.7%, and COIN is $183.19, down 2.1%. Both are simply tracking spot bitcoin lower after Tuesday’s run.

The PCE outcome deserves an honest read. In line means the September hike stays priced around one chance in three, no better and no worse. The two-sided event now is Nvidia. A clean beat extends risk appetite everywhere, and a miss takes the whole AI complex and crypto’s correlation trade down with it.

On volatility, VIX is 15.69. The line where vol-targeting funds start cutting mechanically is a close through roughly 20, and nothing in this tape is close. Worth noting that August’s monthly equity expiry passed on the 21st, so dealer hedging is no longer pinning prices and moves are less damped than they were a week ago.

No dominance chart today. Dominance has not moved a point in either direction. The readings I can find this morning disagree with one another, so I will not draw a picture around a number I cannot stand behind. The rotation story is simple anyway. The alts are giving back more than bitcoin is.

Strategy did nothing this week, which is itself the news. No purchases and no sales between 17 and 23 August, with holdings steady at 840,447 coins. A fresh $1.6bn cash pool was set aside instead. Its board still has authority for up to $1.25bn of bitcoin sales under the monetization program, so the known seller overhead has not gone away. Against that, three identifiable on-chain sellers moved about 9,840 coins into exchanges while the funds bought $2.08bn. Flow analysis that looks only at the ETF tape is reading half the ledger.

The rally cleared $80,000 at the exact moment both of its sponsors stepped back. The sanctions that were sold as an economic D-Day arrived as a list of sixty names, and the Treasury said its buyback program will not grow before November. Price rose anyway, and Monday’s fund flows, posted at lunchtime, show real money kept arriving behind it. Whether that is enough gets answered tomorrow, when the inflation print, the GDP revision, Nvidia and possibly the Fed chair all land inside one session.

THE MACRO PICTURE IN ONE SCREEN

The four cards have gone quiet again, and quiet is information. Credit is tight, the VIX actually fell through Monday’s Iran headlines to close at 15.83, and the ten-year eased as oil dropped. Nothing in the macro plumbing is fighting this rally, but nothing is feeding it either.

The timeline is the story. Today is empty, and tomorrow carries the inflation input, the growth input, the AI input and possibly the policy input all at once. One session decides whether an overbought market gets fuel or a reason.

WHERE THINGS STAND

Six readings, and the honest note that three of them are dated while the market waits for tomorrow.

The row that matters most is the stale one: those Fed odds are about to be repriced by tomorrow’s data, in whichever direction it breaks.

SINCE YESTERDAY

Three things resolved overnight, and each one closed a question I flagged yesterday.

The D-Day turned out to be a list. Bessent’s package sanctions roughly 60 corporations, individuals and vessels tied to Iranian shipping, oil, crypto, gold and aviation. It does not name Chinese refiners and it stopped short of major new penalties. That was my line in the sand for the oil channel reopening, and it was not crossed. Crude fell again, Iran called itself fully prepared, and the rial stayed at record lows.

The buyback engine got a timestamp. Bessent said the Treasury will keep its regular programme and change nothing before the November quarterly refunding. The policy that started this rally is now officially on pause for over two months. Morgan Stanley’s estimate of $80bn to $200bn in spare buyback capacity is real, but it is capacity, not flow.

The $79,500 ceiling broke. Yesterday’s most important level gave way in Asian hours and bitcoin printed above $80,000 for the first time since May. The move extends what Glassnode data shows was the second-best week since early 2021. It also pushed the 14-day momentum reading to 78, which is deep into overbought territory.

WHAT HAPPENED

Bitcoin rose above $80,000 in Asian trading and holds $80,715 at 13:27 CET, up 4.0% on the day and roughly 25% in a week. It did so the morning after both catalysts behind the move softened. The sanctions came in milder than advertised, and the Treasury explicitly capped its buyback programme until November.

The advance also broadened. Solana cleared $100 with an 8.2% gain, XRP holds a 52% week, zcash a 66% week, and ether sits just under $2,500 with a 32% week.

WHY IT MATTERS

A rally that rises on its catalyst is ordinary. A rally that rises after its catalyst is withdrawn is telling you something about who is buying. Monday’s fund data answered part of that at lunchtime: another $337.6m went into the bitcoin ETFs, a fifth consecutive positive day, bigger than Friday’s, and the first with no short squeeze underneath it. The bid is broader than momentum chasers, though a Fed research experiment CoinDesk reported shows rallies do recruit new crypto buyers as they run.

The market was positioned for the Iran announcement to matter, in either direction. It did not. Equities closed Monday mixed, with the S&P 500 down 0.3%, the Nasdaq down 0.8% on chip weakness before Nvidia, and the Dow up 0.3%. The VIX ended lower. Whatever premium was built for an escalation on Monday afternoon has been given back.

That leaves the move running on internal fuel precisely as the external checks arrive. A momentum reading near 78 says the advance is stretched. Bitfire’s flow map puts seller supply between $78,500 and $82,000, exactly where price now sits, with the next real buyers waiting at $72,400 to $73,500. Stretched positioning inside a supply band, one day before the most crowded session of the month, is a specific and measurable risk.

MY VIEW

I stay long and I am not adding a single dollar at these levels. The structural story that got me here, real yields falling while Washington manages its own borrowing costs, is intact and yesterday changed none of it.

But I distinguish between a thesis and an entry. The thesis is fine. The entry, up 25% in a week into known supply with an overbought tape, is poor. If tomorrow’s PCE comes in at the expected 0.2% and Nvidia delivers, this consolidates and goes higher. If either disappoints, the air between here and $73,500 is thin.

The hedge I put on yesterday stays on through Wednesday. It cost little, and Monday’s fading VIX made it cheaper to hold, not more expensive.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Tomorrow’s core PCE first. Consensus is 0.2% on the month, holding the annual rate at 3.3%. A hot print reprices those stale Fed odds against this rally, while a soft print gives Warsh room to be friendly. Both directions are live.

Then Nvidia after the US close, as the read on whether the AI capex cycle that has been pulling money away from the Nasdaq’s edges is intact. And Warsh himself: CoinDesk has him speaking Wednesday, earlier calendars said Friday’s keynote, and until the Fed publishes an agenda I treat the whole back half of the week as his window.

MY STANCE TODAY

Long, hedged through Wednesday, adding nothing up here. The ladder below is what I am trading against.

WORTH KNOWING

Coinbase put stocks on its own blockchain. It launched tokenized equities on Base, joining the race to move share trading on-chain. For a subscriber, the practical point is that the exchanges are building the plumbing the CLARITY Act would regulate, ahead of the Senate’s return on September 15.

Solana’s vote is a supply event, not a headline. Validators are deciding two proposals, one slowing new issuance and one raising daily burns to as much as $800,000. Voting closes Thursday. An 8% move into a supply cut is partly front-running it, so a “no” result is a real downside catalyst for the week’s best major.

MARKET BLIND SPOT

Everyone quoting Morgan Stanley’s number this morning is reading it backwards. The estimate that the Treasury has $80bn to $200bn of spare cash for buybacks is circulating as fuel for the rally. Look at what was actually said yesterday and it is the opposite.

Bessent committed to changing nothing before the November refunding. That is not a promise of more buying, it is a promise of no more buying for over two months. The rally’s origin story, a Treasury actively managing long-term borrowing costs, has a scheduled intermission that almost nobody has marked on a calendar.

Why does that matter mechanically? Last week’s move started because the buyback expansion pushed the real yield down nine basis points, and everything that pays no income rallied off that. If the Treasury is on hold, the real yield’s next move belongs to the data and the Fed, not to Bessent. The floor under this trade just changed owners.

Run the arithmetic on what fills the gap. The entire five-session record week of ETF demand was $1.92bn for bitcoin funds. Against that, the asset added roughly $300bn of market value in a week. The flows are real but they are a fraction of the move, which means the price is mostly expectation. Expectation with no policy support until November has to be validated by the Fed instead, and the Fed speaks this week.

So the blind spot is a date: between now and the November refunding, every leg of the debasement trade depends on Warsh sounding tolerant and inflation behaving. The market is trading the $200bn headline. I am watching the two-month gap underneath it.

TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT

Price has climbed into the exact band where the flow data says sellers are waiting. That is not a prediction of rejection, but it explains why the last thousand dollars of this move have been slower than the previous fifteen thousand. The overbought reading near 78 says the same thing from the momentum side.

The connection to the thesis is direct. Every level on that ladder is downstream of one number, the real yield, and the real yield’s next move is decided by tomorrow’s inflation print and whatever Warsh says after it.

STOCKS

Monday ended as a rotation, not a rout. The S&P 500 closed at 7,652.86, down 0.3%, the Nasdaq at 25,980.19, down 0.8% on chip weakness, and the Dow rose 0.3% to 53,417.16. Yields eased as oil fell, which cushioned everything outside technology.

Today Europe is mildly higher, with the STOXX 600 up about 0.3% at midday. Asia turned too: the Nikkei closed up 0.7% at 66,016, helped by a 15% surge in Kioxia, with Korean markets shut for a holiday. The region that sold the AI story on Monday is buying a bit of it back before Nvidia reports.

US futures are close to flat, which is what a market looks like when everything it cares about happens tomorrow. Intuit, Box and Zoom report after tonight’s close as the undercard.

Gold deserves its own line. It held near $4,644 after touching its best level since mid-May, and it did so while crude fell 2.5%. The metal is trading the monetary story, not the Middle East one, which is the same split bitcoin showed yesterday.

FLOWS AND ROTATION

The rotation I kept saying the gauges could not see is now visible in the leaderboard itself. XRP is up 52% on the week, zcash 66%, solana 35%, and bitcoin’s 25% makes it the slowest major in its own rally. Dominance has only ranged between 58.9% and 60.2% because bitcoin keeps pace, but leadership has clearly handed over.

MOVERS

The ETH/BTC ratio is 0.0311. Bitcoin is outrunning ether today, so the golden cross trade from last week is resting rather than extending.

Whales and treasuries. Tom Lee’s Bitmine bought $81m of ether last week, its largest weekly haul since early July. Beyond that I found nothing notable on the wallet trackers this morning worth your time.

BITCOIN AND ETHER ETF FLOWS, MONDAY AUGUST 24 (US$M)

Monday answered the question I flagged this morning: the flows held without a squeeze. Five sessions to Monday net to +$1,957.9m for bitcoin funds and +$777.3m for ether funds. ARKB, BTCO, EZBC, BRRR, BTCW and GBTC posted zero on Monday, as did ETHB, TETH, QETH, EZET and ETHE. Fidelity is the detail worth noticing: FBTC took $104.6m, its biggest day since August 17, so the bid is widening beyond BlackRock. Ether flows decelerated to $115.6m from Friday’s $184.0m, consistent with bitcoin retaking leadership today.

Netting the treasury supply, and this one is genuinely new. Strategy’s Monday filing shows it sold 18.26m MSTR shares for roughly $2bn last week and bought or sold no bitcoin for a second straight week. It put $300m into its dividend reserve, now $5.1bn, spent $136.4m buying back preferred stock, and parked $1.59bn in a newly created USD Cash pool. That pool is explicitly permitted to buy bitcoin, repurchase shares or repay debt. Read that twice: the company I have been tracking as a forced seller just raised two billion dollars of equity at a 1.04 mNAV and turned part of it into discretionary dry powder. The seller overhead is still real, its $5bn monetisation authorisation is still live, but for the first time since June the flow can point the other way. MSTR closed Monday at $120.10, up 0.7%, and COIN at $184.41, down 1.1%.

GLOSSARY

Real yield. What a bond pays after inflation is subtracted. The hurdle rate for gold and bitcoin.

Credit spread (HY OAS). Extra interest that riskier companies pay over the government, in basis points.

Basis point. One hundredth of a percentage point. 100 basis points is 1%.

RSI / overbought. A 0-100 score comparing recent gains to recent losses. Above 70 usually means a move went too far, too fast.

Vol-targeting. Funds that hold a fixed level of risk. When volatility rises they must sell, whatever they think.

Open interest. The number of derivative contracts still live. Rising with price means new positions, not just closing old ones.

Dominance. Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market value.

mNAV. A treasury company’s market value divided by the value of the coins it holds. Near 1.0 means the market pays nothing for the business.

Carry trade and carry unwind. Borrowing where rates are low, such as Japan, to invest elsewhere. When home yields rise, the money goes home.

Golden cross. The 50-day average price rising above the 200-day. A trend signal built entirely from the past.

Triple witching. The quarterly Friday when stock, index and futures options all expire at once.

Debasement. Letting a currency lose value so debt shrinks in real terms. An indirect tax on savers.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

• Bessent details his Iran offensive this afternoon, aimed at the countries and shippers moving Iranian crude. Iran’s security chief has threatened to halt Persian Gulf energy exports and the rial hit a record low.

• Bitcoin is $78,594, up 2.0%, and back above $78,000 for the first time since Friday’s high. Ether leads at $2,493, up 2.9%, with a 24-hour range of $2,396.58 to $2,507.75.

• Gold is $4,726, up 1.0%. WTI is $85.27, down 2.1%. Those two moved in opposite directions on the same headline.

Wall Street has now voted on the Iran offensive, and it did not vote for an oil shock. It bought gold to a fresh high, pushed bitcoin up 2%, sold technology hard, and let crude fall 2%. That combination says traders are not pricing a supply disruption at all. They are pricing what it means when Washington weaponises the dollar system this aggressively, and the answer is to own things that sit outside it.

THE MACRO PICTURE IN ONE SCREEN

Read the four cards together and one of them no longer fits the others. Credit is tight at 275 basis points and the VIX is under 16, both saying nothing is wrong. Rates are still doing the heavy lifting, with the ten-year real yield at 2.35% after falling nine basis points on last week’s buyback. What changed at the open is the fourth card, where oil and gold split.

The calendar makes this awkward rather than clean. Wednesday stacks core PCE, the GDP revision and Nvidia into one session, so the inflation read and the AI read land together. Friday then gives Warsh the last unconstrained platform before the pre-meeting blackout starts on September 5.

WHERE THINGS STAND

Six readings show how much of this the market has absorbed, and how much it has not.

The row that still does not fit is the VIX, sitting under 16 while an economic war is declared over the world’s most important oil corridor.

SINCE YESTERDAY

Three things changed, and the opening bell told me which one the market cares about.

Washington opened two economic fronts at once. Bessent wrote in the Financial Times over the weekend that the Iran measures would be an economic D-Day, the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary. He details them at a press conference this afternoon. Separately, US-Canada trade talks broke down, new tariffs went on Canadian goods, and Carney suspended talks and promised to match them.

Tehran answered with the only card it holds. Iran’s security chief vowed to neutralise the economic war and threatened to stop energy leaving the Persian Gulf. The rial hit a record low. Roughly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, and China buys more than 80% of Iran’s exported crude, which makes Beijing the real target of any enforcement.

The open resolved the ambiguity. Before 15:30 CET this looked like a market ignoring the news. It was not. Gold went to $4,726, bitcoin added 2%, ether added nearly 3%, and the Nasdaq dropped almost a percent led by memory chips. Money moved out of the AI trade and into hard assets inside the first hour.

LEAD STORY

The market did not buy the oil shock. It bought the exit from the dollar system

WHAT HAPPENED

On August 19 the Treasury doubled the size of each long-bond buyback operation to at least $4bn. Yields did not fall, but the message landed, and bitcoin ran from below $64,000 to $79,500 in three sessions while gold pushed to new highs.

Five days later the same Treasury Secretary is unveiling sanctions designed to cut off every remaining buyer and shipper of Iranian oil. Iran threatened the Gulf. Then the US market opened, and the response was to buy gold and bitcoin while selling technology and crude.

WHY IT MATTERS

Almost everyone framed today as an oil-shock risk. Sanctions on Gulf supply, threat to Hormuz, therefore crude up and inflation up. That framing predicts a specific tape: oil higher, energy shares higher, gold higher, bitcoin lower on rising real yields.

Three of those four are wrong today. Crude is down 2.1%, European energy shares fell, and bitcoin is up 2%. Only gold behaved as the story predicted, and even it is moving for a different reason.

Here is the version that fits the actual prices. These sanctions do not remove barrels from the world, they remove Iran’s ability to sell barrels, which is bearish for crude. What they do remove is the assumption that access to dollar payment rails is neutral infrastructure. Bessent’s own phrasing was that any nation acting as a financial artery for Iran should expect to share its isolation. That is a warning aimed at China. Every central bank and treasurer watching just received a reminder that dollar access is conditional. The rational response is to hold some reserves in something no one can switch off, and that is what gold at a fresh high and bitcoin at $78,594 are.

Why was the market positioned wrong? Because the reflex from a decade of Gulf headlines is to trade the oil channel. Traders bought energy and sold duration on every escalation since 2019, and it worked, because those episodes threatened supply. This one threatens the plumbing instead, and the muscle memory pointed at the wrong asset.

MY VIEW

I think the de-dollarisation read is the right one and the tape is agreeing with me in real time. I also think one hour of trading is not a thesis, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What raises my conviction is the coherence. Gold up, bitcoin up, crude down, technology down and the dollar barely moved is an internally consistent set of prices. A confused market does not produce that pattern. It produces noise.

What keeps me hedged is that the actual sanctions text has not landed yet. Bessent speaks this afternoon. If the measures name Chinese refiners directly, the oil channel reopens fast and the trade I just described gets tested from the inflation side within days.

The strongest case against my view. A single session is thin evidence for a structural story, and there is a duller explanation available. Bitcoin and gold may simply be extending last week’s momentum on falling real yields, with the Iran headline incidental. Crude may be down on demand worries rather than on any clever read of sanctions mechanics. Technology may be selling off purely because Nvidia reports Wednesday and Alibaba just diluted its shareholders, neither of which has anything to do with Tehran. If that is right, I am building a narrative on top of noise, and Wednesday’s PCE print will matter far more than anything Bessent says at the podium.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

The press conference, for whether secondary sanctions name Chinese refiners directly. That is the difference between a symbolic measure and one that actually removes barrels and reopens the oil channel.

Then Wednesday’s core PCE. Consensus is 0.2% on the month, leaving the annual rate at 3.3%. Both directions carry risk. A hot print revives the hike conversation and lifts real yields, which would hurt exactly the trade that is working today, while a soft print hands Warsh room to sound relaxed on Friday.

MY STANCE TODAY

Long the hard assets, hedged, not adding into strength. The ladder below is what I am trading against.

WORTH KNOWING

The Canada breakdown is the quieter risk. New US tariffs on Canadian goods and a promised like-for-like response put a tax on the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world. Tariffs raise prices. That is a second inflation source arriving in the same week as a Gulf threat and a PCE print, and almost nobody is connecting the three.

MSCI may throw the treasury companies out of its indices. A consultation on non-operating companies would delete Strategy, Metaplanet and Yellow Cake from the ACWI IMI, based on a simulation using May data. Index deletion forces passive funds to sell regardless of price, which is corporate-treasury supply with a schedule attached.

MARKET BLIND SPOT

The reflex you will hear all week is that geopolitical risk is bullish for bitcoin because it is a crisis hedge. That framing is popular, it is about to be repeated everywhere, and today’s tape shows it is the right conclusion for the wrong reason.

Bitcoin is not an oil hedge and it never has been. What it trades on is the real yield, the return you can earn risk-free after inflation. That is why it spent the year below its October record while real yields sat above 2%, and why it added a fifth of its value last week when the real yield dropped nine basis points.

Today is a live demonstration. An oil-supply headline hit the tape and bitcoin went up 2% while crude went down 2.1%. If bitcoin were pricing a supply shock, those two would move together. They did not, which tells you the mechanism running through this market is monetary rather than physical.

That distinction decides what breaks the trade. If Hormuz is actually disrupted, crude spikes, headline inflation rises, the Fed cannot cut into it, and real yields go up. Bitcoin’s hurdle rate rises exactly when the crisis is loudest. The 2022 record is the uncomfortable evidence: energy spiked, central banks tightened, and bitcoin lost roughly two thirds of its value in the same year.

So the people buying crypto today as protection against a Middle East escalation are, mostly by accident, positioned correctly for the scenario that is actually unfolding and badly positioned for the one they think they are hedging. Knowing which of those you own matters far more than the direction on the screen this afternoon.

TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT

The open pushed price out of the band that contains Strategy’s average cost and into the last stretch below Friday’s high. Bitcoin is now 4.3% above the $75,385 that company paid, and 37.6% below the October record. That is a bounce with room, not a new cycle.

Japan matters more than usual here. It imports nearly all its oil through the Gulf, so any real supply shock hits Japanese inflation hardest, pushes JGB yields higher still, and accelerates the repatriation that drains global risk positions.

POSITIONING DEEP-DIVE

Monday’s closer look at how the market is actually positioned, rather than what it is saying.

The squeeze is finished, the position is not. Roughly $3bn of shorts were liquidated on August 19 and 20. In the last 24 hours another $789.5m of positions were closed out across the market (CoinGlass, approximate). That second number is smaller and two-sided, which is what a tape looks like once forced flow clears.

Open interest is the tell. Derivatives open interest sits near $54.95bn (CoinGlass, approximate) and rose as price rose. Had this been only shorts covering, open interest would have fallen while price climbed, because closing a short removes a contract. It did not fall. New longs came in behind the squeeze, and today’s move is being added on top of them.

The equity tape is rotating, not panicking. A Dow up 0.25% against a Nasdaq down 0.93% is money leaving the AI complex rather than leaving the market. Micron fell about 3.2% and SK Hynix about 3.1%, so the selling is concentrated in memory, the most cyclical part of the AI supply chain, two days before Nvidia reports.

On funding, I will not quote a number I cannot confirm this afternoon. The honest version is that a market that rallies more than 20% in a week with rising open interest is almost certainly paying to be long. I would rather say that plainly than publish a decimal I did not verify.

The calendar has teeth. September 18 is both monthly options expiry and quarterly triple witching, which is the heaviest positioning day of the quarter. Dealer hedging tends to pin prices into an expiry close and then releases them afterwards. That is three weeks out, but it sits two days after the FOMC, so September’s second half is where the compressed catalysts land.

STOCKS

The open was the point of waiting. The Nasdaq is 25,937, down 0.93%, the S&P 500 is off 0.36%, and the Dow is 53,412, up 0.25%. That spread is a rotation, not a scare. Memory led the fall, with Micron down about 3.2% and SK Hynix about 3.1%, while Nvidia itself is close to unchanged near $214.71 ahead of Wednesday’s numbers.

Europe went almost nowhere and stayed near three-week lows. The STOXX 600 is up 0.03% at 654.38, with the DAX, CAC 40 and FTSE 100 all close to unchanged. The sector split tells the story better than the index: travel and leisure led, up about 1% on cheaper fuel, while energy names fell. Europe traded the oil price, not the oil risk.

Asia closed weaker. The Nikkei lost 0.7% to 65,528 and Shanghai fell 0.59% to 3,882, both dragged by technology. Alibaba’s $10.2bn share sale to fund AI expansion knocked its Hong Kong listing almost 10% and set the tone: investors have started pricing the cost of the buildout rather than only the promise.

On volatility, the VIX at 15.92 shortly after the open was up 5.2% and still low. The level to respect is a close through roughly 20, because that is where funds targeting a fixed volatility budget must cut equity exposure mechanically. A move of this size from a base this low is noise, not a signal.

FLOWS AND ROTATION

Ether is leading again. It is up 2.9% against bitcoin’s 2.0%, holding the ETH/BTC ratio at 0.03172 after the golden cross that formed on the pair. Chainlink added 2.8% and zcash 4.4%, so the bid is broadening beyond the majors even as dominance and the Altcoin Season Index refuse to register it.

MOVERS

Seven-day figures are CoinDesk’s Monday morning readings, so they understate the move by today’s gain. The golden cross, where the 50-day average crosses above the 200-day, has a mixed record on this pair. February 2021 delivered 93%. May and August 2022 were both traps.

Whales. Lookonchain flagged wallet 0x2d59 pulling 30,000 ether off Binance, part of 120,000 ether over three weeks. Abraxas Capital withdrew another 18,000. Against that, 7 Siblings sold 14,000 ether at an average of $2,346, a level today’s price has now cleared. Exchange withdrawals point to accumulation, and the sellers who took profit under $2,400 have been left behind.

BITCOIN ETF FLOWS, AUGUST 21 (US$M)

Five sessions from August 17 to 21 net to +$1,917.8m. BTCO, EZBC, BRRR, BTCW and GBTC all posted zero on August 21. August 24 is not posted yet and is pending. One fund is doing the work: BlackRock’s IBIT took $503.0m of the $606.3m on August 20 and $239.3m of $307.5m on Friday.

ETHER ETF FLOWS, AUGUST 21 (US$M)

Five sessions net to +$692.6m. TETH, ETHV, QETH, EZET and ETHE were all zero on Friday. Combined with bitcoin, that is roughly $2.6bn across the two complexes, the strongest week since October.

Netting the treasury supply. Strategy did not buy or sell bitcoin between August 10 and 16, its most recent disclosure. It sold 3,458,866 of its own shares for about $333.7m instead and lifted its dollar reserve to $4.8bn. It holds 840,447 coins at an average of $75,385, so at today’s price that position is roughly $2.7bn in the money, against about $10bn of paper losses a week ago. With a live authorisation covering up to $5bn of sales and an enterprise mNAV of 1.04, the next filing tells you whether last week’s fund demand was meeting corporate supply. MSTR was $121.40 shortly after the open, up 1.8%, having traded between $115.80 and $121.91.

Bitcoin has gone up 12% in two days and it is not the ETF tape driving it. Trump put crypto legislation back on the table at the White House on Wednesday, and the market repriced the odds of the CLARITY Act passing. The flows followed the politics, not the other way around. Three things moved overnight, and only one of them is really about crypto.

Bitcoin ran at $80,000 and got turned away. It reached $79,320 before settling back around $77,000. That is a 12% gain over two days, the biggest weekly move in more than two years, and the rejection at a round number matters as much as the rally.

Stocks fell hard while crypto climbed. The Dow dropped 703.84 points on Thursday to 52,759.21, the S&P 500 lost 0.87% to 7,641.16, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1% to 26,067.17. The Treasury’s expanded buyback failed to hold yields down, and the 30 year closed at 5.25%.

Asia did not follow the US crypto bid. The Nikkei closed down 0.36% on Friday, giving back part of Thursday’s 1.21% gain. Japanese yields near 30 year highs keep pressure on exporters and on anyone funding trades in cheap yen.

Washington Repriced Bitcoin, and the Flows Only Followed

What happened

President Trump hosted crypto chief executives at the White House on Wednesday and publicly pressed Congress to pass the CLARITY Act. Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong, the Winklevoss twins, Kraken’s Arjun Sethi, and Robinhood’s Vlad Tenev were in the room.

Bitcoin moved 12% over the two sessions that followed. It ran to $79,320 today before easing back to around $77,000.

The CLARITY Act would set a federal market structure for digital assets and split oversight between the SEC and the CFTC. It had stalled before the Senate’s August recess.

Why it matters

The market had written this bill off. The Senate declined to vote before its summer break, and coverage in early August treated 2026 passage as unlikely.

That is why positioning was so light. BTC ETFs bled a net $385 million between August 10 and 14, negative on four of those five sessions. Traders were not holding exposure into what looked like legislative failure.

When the President put the bill back on the agenda in person, that assumption broke, and a thin market had to reprice quickly. The move looks violent because so few people were positioned for it.

My view

Be careful about what the ETF numbers are actually telling you. Those inflows of $517 million and $606 million landed on the 19th and 20th, after Wednesday’s White House event, not before it.

ETF flows also settle a day after the trade and mechanically chase price, because authorized participants create new shares to meet demand that has already arrived. An inflow that follows a policy catalyst is momentum behaviour. It is not independent evidence that the catalyst will deliver.

So I hold the trend view and distrust the entry. A daily RSI of 84.45 with price above its upper Bollinger Band is the kind of reading that resolves through either sideways digestion or a sharp snap back. Reclaiming the 200 day average at $71,924 is real and structural, and I am not selling into that. I am also not adding at $77,000 on a political promise.

Japan’s bond market keeps cracking new highs. The 10 year JGB touched 2.945% this week, a level last seen in 1996, on inflation worries and bets the Bank of Japan hikes rates in September. Rising Japanese yields raise the risk of a carry unwind, where investors who borrowed cheap yen to buy other assets have to sell those assets to repay the now more expensive loan.

Market Blind Spot

The market has priced a change in political will. It has not priced the arithmetic, and the arithmetic has not moved at all.

The CLARITY Act did not stall because nobody was pushing it. It stalled over a specific dispute: Democrats want enforceable ethics and conflict of interest provisions, including a ban on government officials running crypto businesses. That is a pointed disagreement, and presidential enthusiasm does not resolve it.

Look closely at what happens on September 15. It is a cloture vote on the motion to proceed, which is a vote about whether to even begin debating the bill. Cloture needs 60 votes, so roughly seven Democrats must cross over just to open the floor.

Here is the part I think is genuinely underpriced. The White House event may have made that crossover harder rather than easier, because the ethics provision in dispute touches the President’s own family crypto interests. A bill the President is personally championing is a harder bill for a Democrat to hand a win on, not an easier one.

Positioning has moved a long way on a catalyst that changed the political temperature without changing a single vote count. That is the exposure I would want subscribers to see clearly.

Technical Snapshot

The single most important thing on this chart is the 200 day average at $71,924. Bitcoin spent weeks below it and has now taken it back, which turns a recovery into a re-established uptrend.

The warning sits right alongside it. A daily RSI of 84.45 is not ordinary overbought, it is the reading you get in blow-off moves. Price is also trading above its upper Bollinger Band at $72,260, a band that measures the normal statistical range, so bitcoin is outside its own expected range.

The volatility picture is the odd one out. The VIX sits near 15, close to its 2026 low of 14.2 set on August 16, even with long dated yields just off a 19 year high. The regime line to watch is a close above roughly 20, where volatility targeting funds, strategies that automatically cut stock exposure as market swings increase, start selling mechanically regardless of the news. Nothing is close to triggering that today.

Movers and Rotation

XRP led every major coin higher today, up nearly 19%, while Chainlink lagged badly at 1.8%. That spread is what a policy driven repricing looks like: the coins most exposed to US regulatory clarity moved hardest, and dominance rose because bitcoin is the vehicle traders reach for first.

The catch is that structure doesn’t tell you about fuel. A move built on short covering can sit above every moving average and still round-trip fast if the buying doesn’t follow through. I want the breakout level to hold as support, not just get touched and abandoned.

Every one of those yield levels feeds directly into the thesis: ease at the long end and risk assets get room to run, back up again and the room closes fast.

STOCKS

European cash markets were still digesting Wednesday’s session as they opened Thursday. The STOXX 600 closed flat at 652, the FTSE 100 edged up 0.05% to 10,726, and the DAX slipped 0.32% to 26,256. London’s index carries heavy weight in oil majors like Shell and BP, so a Brent price above $93 is a modest tailwind the DAX doesn’t get the same way.

Asia already closed for the day: the Nikkei 225 rose 1.2% to 66,118 as yen dynamics helped exporters, and Shanghai’s Composite added 0.24% to 3,904 after the PBoC held its lending rates steady.

Spot is flat and ETF inflows accelerated. But the crypto equities broke with tech, which I did not separate out clearly enough yesterday, and I am fixing that below.

The Bond Market Just Repriced Every Growth Asset, And Bitcoin Sat It Out

What happened

The 30-year US Treasury yield climbed to 5.33% on Tuesday, its highest since 2007. The trigger was familiar: Brent crude rose for a fourth straight session, reaching about $91.81, as President Trump said there are no talks underway with Tehran and the US naval blockade stands. Eight attacks on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have been reported this month.

What followed was a repricing of anything valued on distant earnings. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 5.4%. The Nasdaq Composite lost 1.3% and the S&P 500 fell 0.69% to 7,691.76, a third straight decline. Overnight the selling moved to Asia, where the Nikkei closed down 3.16% at 65,326 and Korea’s Kospi fell 5.2% to 6,515.97.

Bitcoin ignored all of it. It is trading near $64,340, little changed, and comfortably above the $62,000 floor I have been watching. Its US spot ETFs pulled in $297.5 million Monday and $189.3 million Tuesday.

Why it matters

The market was positioned for the wrong risk. Through early August, the consensus worry was an oil-driven inflation spike forcing the Fed’s hand. Investors hedged inflation. What actually bit was the discount rate.

Here is the mechanism in plain terms. A company like a chipmaker is valued mostly on profits expected years from now. To price those profits today, investors discount them using long-term interest rates. When the 30-year yield jumps, those future profits are worth less today, so the share price falls. Nothing about the chip business changed on Tuesday. The maths used to value it did.

That also explains why the damage was so uneven. Energy majors rose, with Exxon up 2.6%. Defensive names held, with Johnson & Johnson up 3.3%. The pain landed exactly where the profits sit furthest in the future.

What I cannot confirm is whether this is a durable regime change or a positioning flush. Bank of America survey data reportedly shows managers abandoning bets on a quick drop in rates or crude, which suggests conviction. But a 5.4% one-day move in semis has the texture of forced selling, not reassessment. I would not call this settled.

My view

I think Bitcoin’s behaviour here is the genuinely interesting signal, and I want to be careful not to overclaim it. Bitcoin has no earnings to discount. That is normally a weakness in the story. In a week when the discount rate is the thing breaking everything else, it is briefly an advantage.

The ETF flows support that reading, with one caveat I always apply. Flow data settles a day late and mechanically chases price, so an inflow after a rally proves little. This is different: these inflows came on flat-to-down days for Bitcoin, and on a day when equity risk was being cut hard. That makes them harder to dismiss as momentum.

I am still not adding. Credit is calm and the dollar is soft, so I do not think this becomes systemic. But three of my four warning lights from yesterday are unlit and the fourth just flashed, and I would rather own that ambiguity than trade around it.

What I’m watching

Whether the 30-year holds above 5.30%, whether Brent clears $95, whether the VIX closes above 20, and whether Bitcoin stays above $62,000 through Friday’s expiry. The Fed minutes this afternoon could move the first of those quickly.

Worth Knowing

The SEC stopped waiting for Congress. On Tuesday it proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets”, its first major crypto rulemaking. Token offerings up to $5 million would be exempt from securities registration for four years, and offerings up to $75 million exempt for twelve months with financial statements and ongoing reporting. The stated goal is a path for tokens to leave securities status entirely once they hit decentralisation benchmarks.

The CFTC moved the same day. It proposed registration exemptions for some fund managers and advisers and raised the small-fund threshold. Two agencies acting within hours of each other, while the CLARITY Act sits stalled until September 15, tells you the regulators have decided to build the framework themselves.

Gold recovered part of Tuesday’s drop. Bullion is near $4,361, up about 0.6%, after falling close to 2% on Tuesday when the yield spike hit all metals. It remains up roughly 8.8% on the month.

New York City opened a probe into prediction markets. The Wall Street Journal reported an investigation covering Polymarket, Coinbase and Kalshi. Coinbase fell 2.9% Tuesday, though the broader tech selloff accounts for most of that.

Market Blind Spot

Strategy fell 5.28% on Tuesday. Bitcoin was flat. Bitcoin ETFs took in $189 million the same day. Those three facts do not belong in the same sentence if Strategy is what most people still think it is, which is a leveraged way to own Bitcoin.

It is not behaving like one any more. On Tuesday it traded like a richly valued technology stock, alongside the semiconductor names, because that is what the market now treats it as. Coinbase did the same thing, falling 2.9%. The correlation that governs these two names on days like this is the Nasdaq, not Bitcoin.

Here is why that matters beyond the share price. Strategy’s ability to raise money cheaply depends on mNAV, the premium the market pays for its stock relative to the Bitcoin it holds. Saylor is currently funding the company by selling shares rather than coins, and he did that again this week. That only works while the stock holds a premium. A sustained AI unwind that drags the equity down compresses that premium, and the cheaper the equity gets, the more attractive selling Bitcoin becomes relative to selling stock.

So the chain runs: AI valuations fall, Strategy falls with them as tech beta, mNAV compresses, and the 840,447 Bitcoin the company held as of August 16 becomes a more likely source of supply. That last link is not confirmed and I want to be explicit about it. There has been no new sale since the 1,690 coins in early August, and the company reported no purchases or sales between August 10 and 16. But the market is watching Strategy for Bitcoin news when the thing that actually determines its behaviour right now is the Nasdaq.

Technical Snapshot

Bitcoin is in its third week inside the $62,000 to $65,000 band, and that band is the whole story today. It held while global equities repriced, which is exactly the test I set out yesterday.

Below sits the demand zone from $58,500 to $62,000, anchored by buyers who stepped in at the August 14 low. Above, sellers have capped every attempt at the $65,000 to $68,000 supply zone, with heavier resistance toward $71,000.

The rates backdrop makes the hold more notable, not less. Higher long yields are normally a headwind for an asset paying no interest, since bonds become a more attractive place to park capital. Bitcoin absorbed a 19-year high in the 30-year yield without breaking its range. I would not call that strength yet, but it is not weakness.

Stocks

Asia took the worst of it. Korea’s Kospi fell 5.2% to 6,515.97, its biggest drop in months, as Samsung shed 6.9% and SK Hynix 7.9%. Japan’s Nikkei closed down 3.16% at 65,326, with Furukawa Electric off 13.5% and SoftBank down 10.5%. China was calmer, with the Shanghai Composite down about 1.5% to 3,927.70, because it carries far less AI-supply-chain weight.

Europe is steadier than the headlines suggest. The STOXX 600 closed Tuesday at 651.90, down 0.69% and at a two-week low. This morning it is mixed rather than falling, with France’s CAC up about 0.4%, Germany’s DAX roughly flat and London’s FTSE off about 0.2%. Europe simply owns fewer of the AI names doing the damage.

US premarket has gone flat, which is the surprise of the morning. After Asia’s rout, the S&P 500 tracker is down 0.02%, the Nasdaq-100 tracker down 0.14%, the Dow tracker up 0.02% and small caps down 0.11%. Wall Street is declining to follow Asia lower so far. The VIX at 15.84 is rising but remains far from the 20 level that forces mechanical selling.

The crypto equities are bouncing before the open. Strategy is quoted at $93.55 in premarket trade, up 1.11% after Tuesday’s 5.28% fall, and Coinbase at $146.50, up 0.18%. That is a partial repair rather than a reversal, and it is worth remembering premarket volumes are thin enough that these prints move easily.

Two-sided risk today: the Fed’s July minutes land this afternoon. Hawkish language on inflation would validate the 30-year move and pressure growth stocks further. Any sign the committee sees the oil spike as temporary would take pressure off the long end and could spark a sharp relief rally in exactly the names that just got hit.

Movers and Rotation

Bitcoin dominance, Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market value, sits at 56.5%, flat on the week but still above the 56.27% of a month ago. Ether has quietly gained share to about 10.1%. What has not happened is any rotation into smaller tokens: alt share keeps leaking, and stablecoin share near 12.9% says the cash is sitting still rather than moving down the risk curve.

ETF, OI and Liquidations

This is the strongest two-day stretch for Bitcoin ETFs in weeks: $297.5 million Monday and $189.3 million Tuesday, $486.8 million combined. BlackRock’s IBIT led both sessions.

One correction from yesterday’s edition. I published Monday’s total as $137.3 million with IBIT marked pending. IBIT has since posted at $160.2 million, which lifts the confirmed Monday figure to $297.5 million. The direction was right, the magnitude was understated, and the table below carries the corrected numbers.

Ether ETFs did the same thing, and Tuesday was the bigger of the two days. Monday brought $30.9 million and Tuesday $71.4 million, for $102.3 million combined. BlackRock’s ETHA took $64.7 million of Tuesday’s total on its own. Note that Grayscale’s ETHE, which has bled money almost continuously since launch, posted a small positive figure of $1.5 million.

Netting this against corporate treasury supply: Strategy neither bought nor sold Bitcoin between August 10 and 16, and is funding itself through share sales. Its holdings stood at 840,447 coins on August 16. So on the two flows I track most closely, demand is running well ahead of supply this week.

I still cannot confirm open interest, which is the total value of outstanding derivatives contracts, funding rates, or liquidation totals from a dated source this morning, so those stay out. Sentiment sits at 46, in Fear, per the Milkroad tracker, up from 41 the day before. Worth noting that sentiment is reading fearful while spot holds and flows are strong, which is usually a constructive divergence rather than a warning.

The Macro Picture in One Screen

Put the four boxes together and one story emerges: this reads like a rates and inflation scare, not a credit event. Credit spreads, the extra yield junk-rated companies pay to borrow over safe government debt, are still tight, so bond investors are not pricing a wave of defaults. Volatility is climbing but hasn’t broken its danger threshold, and the dollar is treading water instead of surging the way it would in a true flight to safety.

The next few days matter most. Wednesday brings the Fed’s July meeting minutes, and Friday is the monthly options expiry that tends to pin prices into the close before amplifying the next move once it rolls off. Then the calendar goes quiet until the Fed’s blackout window opens in early September, right before the CLARITY Act’s procedural vote and the Fed’s own decision land back to back. If oil is still climbing by the time those two hit, mid-September could be this cycle’s most crowded 48 hours.

Here is what the underlying data says, translated out of trader-speak, before we get into the story.

Since Yesterday

Three things moved markets overnight, and none of them are really about crypto.

The Iran ceasefire lapsed. The interim US-Iran agreement, signed in June to buy 60 days for talks, expired Monday without a renewal. President Trump said he isn’t interested in extending it, and attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have reportedly resumed.

Oil extended its climb. Brent crude is near $91 a barrel, its third straight higher close, as traders price in a longer disruption to Middle East supply.

Long bond yields jumped. The 30-year Treasury yield pushed to its highest level since 2007 as investors demanded more compensation for the inflation risk that expensive oil brings.

The Real Story Isn’t Stocks Falling, It’s Why Bond Yields Are Screaming

What happened

Brent crude climbed to $91.04 a barrel Tuesday, its third consecutive higher close, after the US-Iran interim ceasefire expired Monday without renewal. President Trump said he has no interest in extending the truce. Iran and Oman are negotiating shipping safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, but Washington isn’t part of those talks. WTI followed Brent higher, trading near $85.

US equity futures fell in response. Nasdaq-100 futures were down around 1.3%, and S&P 500 futures off about 0.4% heading into the session, extending Monday’s losses when the Dow fell 0.51% as oil first jumped. Dow futures were closer to flat. The move that matters most, though, is happening in bonds. The 30-year Treasury yield pushed to its highest level since 2007, and Japan’s 10-year yield hit a fresh 30-year high near 2.95% on the same worry: that expensive energy keeps inflation sticky.

Crypto is the outlier, and premarket prints in the two most crypto-sensitive US stocks show it. Strategy closed Monday at $97.68, up 4.99%, then traded around $96.70 premarket Tuesday, off about 1%. Coinbase closed at $150.55, up 1.40%, and sat near $149.00 premarket, also down roughly 1%. Both are giving back a small piece of Monday’s rally, in line with the broader futures dip, but both remain well above where they started last week. Bitcoin itself is trading near $64,190, essentially flat on the day and well above last week’s low around $62,700.

Why it matters

Markets had this positioned wrong. Heading into August, traders largely assumed the June ceasefire would get extended or replaced with something more durable. Risk assets were leaning toward de-escalation, not toward the truce simply expiring. That assumption broke Monday, and yields, oil and volatility are now repricing all at once.

The mechanism is straightforward. Expensive oil raises fuel, shipping and food costs. That is inflation. That is exactly what the Fed raises interest rates to fight, or at minimum won’t cut rates into. So even with the Fed still expected to hold in September, bond investors are demanding more yield on long-dated debt to compensate for the inflation risk sitting out there. That is why the 30-year is moving more than the 10-year.

What’s unconfirmed: whether this is a temporary supply scare or the start of a sustained disruption. Only five commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz last Saturday and none on Sunday, versus 31 the prior weekend, a real drop in traffic. But producers have also shown they can reroute cargoes outside the strait. I wouldn’t treat this as a confirmed supply shock yet, just a real risk that’s being priced as one.

My view

My base case: credit is fine, so I don’t expect this to tip into something worse. Credit spreads are still tight, and that’s the market that would move first if investors truly feared defaults or a recession. Volatility has jumped but hasn’t broken its danger threshold. That combination looks like a scare getting priced into rates and energy, not a systemic break.

Bitcoin holding its ground while stocks wobble is the detail I’m leaning on. Crypto usually catches down hard once equity volatility spreads, and so far it hasn’t. Part of that is the ETF bid returning Monday after a rough patch. Part of it may just be that crypto sold off earlier in the summer and has less complacency left to unwind. I’m treating this as constructive, but conditionally. It only holds if Bitcoin keeps its footing and the VIX keeps behaving.

I’m not adding risk into this move. I’d rather see how the next two sessions trade, especially into Friday’s options expiry, before deciding whether the crypto-equity gap is a genuine decoupling or just a lag.

What I’m watching

Four things tell me which way this breaks: a VIX close above 20, Brent above $95, the next leg in the 30-year Treasury yield, and whether Bitcoin’s demand zone holds. If oil keeps climbing and that floor breaks, I’d treat the decoupling thesis as dead.

Worth Knowing

Gold gave back its gains and turned lower. Bullion touched just above $4,400 early Tuesday, then reversed to trade near $4,390, down about 0.6% on the day, as a broad pullback hit metals alongside the bond selloff. It’s still up roughly 9% this month from June’s $3,900s low, but today’s move is a reminder that even the safe-haven trade isn’t moving in a straight line while yields are this unsettled.

The CLARITY Act got a second life, barely. The Senate adjourned for recess without a vote, but Majority Leader Thune filed cloture for September 15, a day before the Fed meets. Prediction-market odds of passage still fell from 25% to 16% after the delay was announced.

Strategy tapped equity instead of selling more Bitcoin. The company raised $333 million through a share sale disclosed Monday, its first major funding move since early August’s Bitcoin sales. More in today’s Blind Spot below.

Market Blind Spot

Everyone watching Strategy is asking the wrong question. The debate has been whether the company sells more Bitcoin to cover its roughly $1.76 billion in annual fixed obligations against about $124 million a quarter of software revenue. That framing missed Monday’s news: Strategy raised $333 million through a share sale instead, its first major funding move since selling 1,690 Bitcoin for $108.6 million around August 10 and 11. No Bitcoin was sold between August 10 and 16.

That’s a meaningful shift. Equity issuance dilutes existing shareholders, but it doesn’t touch the company’s roughly 843,775 Bitcoin stack, and it reduces the pressure to become a forced seller into every rally. It also says something about mNAV, the multiple of net asset value the market pays for Strategy’s stock relative to its Bitcoin holdings. When mNAV compresses toward 1x, selling Bitcoin to raise cash gets less attractive relative to selling shares, since the stock and the underlying Bitcoin trade closer to parity.

The market is still pricing Strategy purely as a Bitcoin-supply overhang. I think the more interesting read is that the company is actively choosing dilution over disposal, which is a vote of confidence in the long-term Bitcoin thesis even as it protects near-term price action from a bigger corporate seller. Technical Snapshot

Bitcoin’s cycle map breaks into four zones from here (chart below). Price is sitting in the balance zone between $62,000 and $65,000, right where it has spent the past two weeks. That’s the zone that matters most today, because it’s also the level from this morning’s lead story: hold it, and the case for crypto decoupling from equity stress stays alive.

Below that, the demand zone runs from $58,500 to $62,000, anchored by buyers who stepped in at last week’s low near $62,700. Above, the supply zone from $65,000 to $68,000 is where sellers have capped rallies, with cycle resistance building out toward $71,000.

Rates context matters here too. The US 10-year sits at 4.74%, and the real yield, the return after subtracting expected inflation, is running in the rough 2.2%-2.4% range this morning by my estimate, not a number I can pin exactly without a live confirmed print. Higher real yields are usually a headwind for Bitcoin, since it pays no interest and competes for the same capital as bonds. That Bitcoin is holding up despite this is the tension at the center of today’s edition.

Stocks

Europe is split, and the split tells the story. The STOXX 600 is down slightly to 656.41. Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC are both lower, each off roughly 0.2%-0.5% and still moving through the morning session. London’s FTSE 100 is the outlier, up about 0.1%, because it’s packed with oil majors like Shell and BP. BlackRock’s IBIT, normally the largest single fund, hadn’t posted a figure at the time of writing, so Monday’s total will likely revise higher once it does.

Ether ETFs turned positive the same day. After a flat read on August 14, Monday brought $30.9 million in net inflows, led by BlackRock’s ETHA at $25.9 million, with Fidelity’s FETH adding $4.3 million. Both BTC and ETH funds caught a bid on the same day, which tells me this wasn’t just a one-off BlackRock flow.

Net this against Strategy’s treasury activity: no Bitcoin was sold last week, and the $333 million equity raise disclosed Monday doesn’t touch the company’s Bitcoin stack directly. So this week’s net supply picture, from the two flows I track most closely, ETF demand and corporate treasury supply, is positive across both major crypto ETF complexes.

Brent slipped 0.15% to $88.45 a barrel. WTI fell 0.74% to $81.79 a barrel.

Why it matters

The Strait of Hormuz carries close to a fifth of the world’s oil. A prolonged closure risks a real supply shock, not just a headline. Expensive oil raises what you pay at the pump, what shippers charge to move goods, and what groceries cost. That is inflation. That is exactly what the Fed is trying to avoid when it decides whether to cut, hold, or hike.

Going into the weekend, most traders were treating this ceasefire as a quiet, durable truce, the kind that fades from headlines rather than expiring on schedule. That assumption just failed. The strait’s shipping collapse is not new tension, it is the culmination of a standoff that has been building for weeks.

Oil’s flat reaction this morning is not proof the risk has passed. Thin trading and a lack of an actual tanker incident both help explain why prices haven’t moved yet. One verified disruption, or a breakdown in the Oman-mediated talks, could reprice this fast.

Bitcoin’s own range this year has been capped partly by this same inflation-and-Fed uncertainty. A fresh oil shock would tighten that vise rather than loosen it. It would work directly against the rate-cut hope that has been the main bullish argument for risk assets since the weak July jobs report.

My view

I’m treating this as a real risk, not a trade signal yet. Oil hasn’t confirmed anything, and I don’t chase a headline that price action itself is ignoring.

What would change my mind is a single tanker incident, a confirmed strait closure, or Brent breaking cleanly above $92 to $95. Any of those would tell me the market has stopped waiting and started pricing the shock.

Until then, I’m holding the same range-bound stance I had before the weekend. I’ll add bitcoin exposure on a confirmed reclaim of $65,000 with ETF flows turning positive again. I’ll trim if $61,500 breaks on volume, especially given how thin the futures market’s own exit door has become lately.

Any tanker incident or confirmed strait disruption, Wednesday’s FOMC minutes for how much weight officials put on oil-driven inflation risk, and whether Monday’s ETF flow number, once Farside posts it Tuesday, shows demand stabilizing or extending its slide.

Worth Knowing

A New York City probe adds to prediction-market scrutiny. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin is investigating Polymarket, Kalshi, Coinbase and Gemini Titan over alleged deceptive marketing, including possible targeting of minors. It follows last week’s Washington-state court order blocking Kalshi from taking event wagers there, another sign this fight is playing out city by city and state by state, not just in Washington D.C.

The SEC’s paused crypto rulemaking has a clearer reason now. Weekend reporting found the agency delayed its Reg Crypto proposal and innovation exemption specifically because the White House and lawmakers worry SEC action could complicate the CLARITY Act negotiations. Little SEC movement is likely until after the Senate’s October recess, and one industry estimate puts the full rulemaking-plus-implementation process at close to two years.

Market Blind Spot

Bitcoin’s futures market has a crowded-club problem. Open interest, the total value of outstanding futures contracts that haven’t been closed yet, sits near $47.9 billion. The 24-hour trading volume in that same market is only about $25.8 billion.

That gap is unusually wide. When open interest towers over daily volume, a lot of people are holding positions and comparatively few are actually trading in and out, so the exit door is small relative to the crowd inside. Glassnode, an on-chain analytics firm, put it plainly: liquidations meet little resting flow to absorb them, so adverse moves tend to run further than they otherwise would.

The risk skews to the downside specifically. Resting buy orders below the market have thinned by roughly a third since early July, according to Glassnode, right as bitcoin’s contract-count open interest holds near elevated levels rather than getting flushed out. If price retests June’s low near $58,000, there may simply not be enough buyers waiting to catch it.

This is the mechanical risk sitting underneath today’s calm, more specific than the usual thin-summer-liquidity line. It’s not a prediction that bitcoin breaks down. It’s a reason a break in either direction could travel further and faster than the recent chop suggests.

Technical Snapshot

The chart below is my own read of the range, not a vendor feed. It lines up with both stories above: nine sessions of chop, now sitting on top of a thinner order book than usual.

Nothing in credit or volatility is forcing a break either direction. The next catalyst is more likely to be the Iran story, a Strategy disclosure, or a CLARITY Act headline than a macro shock out of nowhere.

A confirmed close below $61,500 could open $58,000 quickly given the thinner resting-bid picture described above. A reclaim of $65,000 with real ETF inflows behind it, not just a price bounce, would be the cleaner bullish signal.

Stocks

Europe is little changed early Monday. The STOXX 600 is up 0.2% at 659.30. Germany’s DAX is flat at 26,429.59. The CAC 40 in Paris is off 0.1% at 8,630.45. London’s FTSE 100 is up 0.2% at 10,773.91, steadying after last week’s mining-driven slide. Nothing here is reacting hard to the Iran news yet, which is its own kind of signal.

Asia already closed higher. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.7% to 69,220.25. Government data showed the economy grew faster than forecast last quarter, expanding at a 1.1% annualized pace. That’s despite Japan’s 10-year bond yield hitting a fresh 30-year high at 2.93%, on rising bets the Bank of Japan hikes rates soon.

Rising Japanese yields matter well beyond Tokyo. They raise the cost of the yen carry trade, where investors borrow cheap yen to fund purchases of higher-yielding assets elsewhere. A sharp enough rise can force that trade to unwind, pulling money back out of global risk assets, bitcoin included. China’s Shanghai Composite gained 1.4% to 3,982.65. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.6%, outpacing Japan’s move.

US index futures are mixed heading into the open. S&P 500 futures are up about 0.1%. Nasdaq 100 futures are up 0.5%, their strongest level since July 2. Dow futures are down slightly, a divergence worth noting rather than explaining away. Cash markets closed Friday with the S&P 500 down 0.2%, at 7,785.76, after a report showed US retail sales came in soft. The Nasdaq 100 closed at 30,046.14, down 0.1%. The VIX closed near 14.25, and remains there this morning, well under the roughly-20 level where vol-targeting funds start selling automatically.

This week’s US data cuts both ways. Tuesday’s industrial production and housing starts could support the soft-landing story if they hold up, or add to rate-cut bets if they miss. Wednesday’s FOMC minutes could show a committee more open to a September cut than headlines suggest, or reveal hawkish holdouts worried about oil-driven inflation risk, which would push the roughly-30% hike odds higher rather than lower.

Movers and Rotation

Bitcoin dominance, the share of the total crypto market value held in BTC alone, has stopped climbing for now.

Dominance sits at 58.4%, essentially unchanged from Friday. Two weeks ago it was closer to 56%. That climb has paused rather than reversed, which reads as a genuine pause in the flight-to-BTC trade rather than fresh rotation into alts. Ether is the one relative bright spot, with its own ratio against bitcoin near a three-month high.

ETF, OI and Liquidations

Netting the passive and corporate sides of the ledger: BTC ETFs shed $385.2 million over five sessions, while Strategy has sold no new bitcoin since its August 10 disclosure. Strategy’s total 2026 sales stand at 6,916 BTC, and its holdings have slipped to 840,447 BTC. The company’s BTC Monetization Program still lets it sell bitcoin to fund cash reserves and stock buybacks. It exists because mNAV, the ratio of Strategy’s market value to the bitcoin it holds, compressed toward 1x. That made new stock issuance a worse deal than simply selling coin.

On-chain, there’s nothing fresh to add since Thursday’s report. The wallet tagged 19pFLW still holds 1,120 BTC after its Aug 14 purchase, and no new individually-tagged whale buy or sell has surfaced this morning. I’d rather say that plainly than manufacture a new data point.
