Dear Soul Rider,

Before anything else, thank you.

Thank you for reading when the words were still searching for their voice.
For listening before there was even an album.
For believing before there was proof.

You were here when all we really had was a direction.

Some people may discover a musician… (impostor syndrome kicking in…🤔)
Others will meet a writer… a creator…

Some will enter through a poem.
Others through a song, a book, an image, or a conversation.

They’re all entering the same place.

And since you’re already here, Soul Rider, maybe you should hear it from me first.

Something has been happening behind the words.

Over the past weeks, some of the ideas we’ve been writing, questioning and living together started refusing to remain on the page.

They found rhythm.
Bass.
Voices.
Movement.

One song became another.
One experiment opened another door.

And somewhere along the way, I looked around and realized:

Shit. We’re building an album. 😅

Its name could only be:

BUILT BY BECOMING.

Not a departure from When Silence Speaks.
Not me abandoning words to “become a musician.”

Another doorway into the same world.

The poetry speaks.
The essays question.
The books go deeper.
And now, some of these ideas want to move.

Want to dance.

Want bass underneath them.

Want to meet people who may never open one of my books but might hear four minutes of music and recognize something of themselves.

And that realization led me somewhere even bigger.

Because somewhere along the way, I realized we weren’t simply creating things.

We were building a world.

A world where silence isn’t empty, but a place where character can be forged.

Where failure isn’t the end of the road, but another stone beneath our feet.

Where scars don’t disqualify us from becoming. Sometimes they become part of the architecture.

A world where becoming matters more than appearing.

Every song is a doorway.
Every letter, a conversation.
Every book keeps another part of the fire alive.
Every creation asks the same quiet question:

Who are you becoming?

And perhaps one day someone will tell us:

I came for the poetry and the song…
but I stayed for the vision.

If that happens, we’ll know we’re building something worthy of your trust.

But there is another part of this vision that matters even more.

Let’s not chase success simply to rise above others.

Let’s pursue it to expand what we can offer.

Let every skill we acquire, every scar we survive, every creation we release, every door we open and every victory we earn become something another human being can stand upon.

Every success becomes a foundation.

A foundation where another life can stand up.

Dream.

Grow.

Transform.

Maybe even be saved.

Let’s not chase wealth that ends with us.

Let’s build a kind of wealth that continues after us.

Because perhaps the most beautiful thing we can build isn’t what we get to keep.

It’s what our becoming makes possible for someone else.

That, to me, is what Built by Becoming truly means.

We are not finished products.

We are living works in progress.

Every challenge shapes us.
Every scar teaches us.
Every choice lays another brick.

And eventually, if we’ve lived well enough, what we built for ourselves becomes ground for somebody else.

They rise.

They build.

They lift another.

And one day, they become foundations too.

That is how becoming continues.

That is how humanity grows.

The world around us will change.

Technology will evolve.
Platforms will rise and fall.
Algorithms will reward one thing today and bury it beneath another tomorrow.

So let’s build what cannot become obsolete.

Courage.
Meaning.
Love.
Character.
Humanity.

Let’s become deeply human in a world becoming increasingly artificial.

And if you’re reading this today, Soul Rider, understand something:

You’re not standing in the audience.

You’re already helping lay the foundation.

Not because you owe this vision anything. You don’t.

Your presence is enough.

Your thought, your criticism, your encouragement, your silence, your energy, the song you share with one person, the sentence that makes you stop for a second…

another stone.

Another brick.

Another little piece of the becoming.

Maybe years from now, someone will discover the songs, the books, the letters, the conversations, or something we haven’t even imagined yet.

And you’ll remember when it was smaller.

When there wasn’t certainty.

When there was simply a handful of people, a strange little fire…

and a belief that what we become should eventually become useful to someone beyond ourselves.

So thank you for walking this road with me.

There is no finish line waiting for us.

Just another threshold.

Another lesson.

Another song.

Another human being we might someday help stand.

The forge is still burning.

And there is still so much left to become.

Until then, keep becoming.

You came here screaming before you knew your name,
Small lungs, clenched fists, already choosing the flame.

You cried when you hungered, you cried when they left,
Before language could name what the heart called theft.

Then tears became thunder, and trembling grew chest…
You learned how to roar before learning to rest.

Not today…

You told it to hunger, to heartbreak, to fear,
I’ve survived your whole family. What brings you here?

Are you here to break me, or teach me the bend?
Are you carrying wisdom, or rehearsing my end?

Then fear lost its throne when you questioned its reign,
And you learned every warning is not prophecy of pain.

Fear is information.
Not a sentence…

Some fear says run. Some fear says prepare.
Some is yesterday’s wound breathing today’s air.

So keep what brings wisdom, leave what builds cages,
You’ve paid pain enough. Take the lesson as wages.

And when life gets heavy, don’t worship the strain,
One more rep doesn’t mean you must marry the pain.

Sometimes one more rep is one breath, one small try,
One foot past the place where the old you would die.

Not every overcoming needs thunder or cheers,
Sometimes courage is moving one inch through your fears.

Because becoming was never one glorious test,
It’s choosing one more when your yesterday says rest.

One more breath.
One more step.
One more truth worth becoming.

You don’t have to conquer the whole road tonight.

Just don’t let the place where you hurt
become the place where you stop🫵🏽

There are people who come home still wearing the day,
Jaw locked from swallowing what they were never allowed to say.

They turn the key softly. The kitchen is cold…
Someone needs them tomorrow, so tonight they still hold.

A father counts bills where nobody sees,
Then walks past his children with calm in his knees.

A mother stands barefoot beneath the hallway light,
Presses both palms to the sink, then returns to the night.

And somewhere, beneath a stadium’s magnificent roar,
A champion sits breathing behind a locked door.

Millions can chant the name stitched to his fame,
Yet not one may know the man carrying the name.

We call this strength.

Perhaps too easily.

For crowds love the summit, the medal, the crown,
But rarely stay long enough to watch someone come down.

Applause loves the armor when armor performs,
A witness stays after, when metal meets storms.

The crowd asks: What will you conquer? What mountain comes next?
A witness sees one trembling hand and leaves it unchecked.

No sermon.
No rescue.
No debt to explain.

Just someone who does not look away from the pain.

There is terror in that.

To be seen without rank, without armor or art,
To have someone stand near the unguarded heart.

For the strong learn early what weakness can cost,
How quickly a kingdom smells blood when its sovereign looks lost.

So the jaw becomes granite. The shoulders learn stone.
And survival acquires the grammar of alone.

But even stone keeps the fingerprints of rain,
And the body keeps records the mouth won’t explain.

The neck knows the burden. The stomach knows dread.
The pillow knows sentences nobody has said.

Perhaps strength was never the absence of need,
But carrying what matters without letting it bleed.

Perhaps the strongest among us are not those without scars,
But those who still trust one small window beneath all those stars.

One person.

Not an audience hungry to borrow your light,
But someone who can sit with you after the fight.

Someone unimpressed by the throne or the flame,
Who remembers your laughter before they knew your name.

Someone before whom the legend may cease,
And the human beneath it is granted some peace.

Because there comes a weight no shoulder should own,
A silence that deepens when carried alone.

And there comes a night when no victory will do,
When the strongest thing left is to let someone see you.

So when you meet those who carry the many each day,
Do not only admire what they refuse to betray.

Look past the title.
Past triumph.
Past might.

Ask what their teeth have been holding all night.

And should they trust you enough to let one wall descend,
Do not rush toward the fracture with wisdom to lend.

Do not polish their sorrow.
Do not call it a test.

Pull up a chair.

Let the armor rest.

For crowds will remember the height of the flame,
The records, the victories, the monument, the name.

But when all that thunder has emptied the room,
And greatness sits quietly beside its own gloom,

the soul may not need another lesson in light.

It may need only one human being
who stayed long enough
to whisper:

I saw the weight.
You don’t have to lift it tonight.

This piece found me somewhere between grief and fever during the past few days.

I was mourning a friend gone far too soon while my own body was forcing me into stillness. And beneath both was another quieter weight: knowing that every hour I could not work was an hour taken from the promises I carry, the bills waiting, the family I want to provide for, the private arithmetic of responsibility.

Nothing catastrophic.

Just life becoming heavy in several places at once.

And perhaps that is precisely where this poem began.

Because when people know you as strong, they often see what you continue to carry. They rarely feel the moment when the hands carrying it begin to shake.

Then my thoughts wandered toward Letters to a Legend, a project we have been quietly shaping around greatness, legacy, responsibility, and the human being who remains when the applause is gone.

And something struck me:

Perhaps the legend beneath stadium lights and the parent staring at an unpaid bill in a dark kitchen are asking the universe for the same rare mercy.

Just one human being who sees the weight, beyond rescue, pity and applause.

So today, Soul Riders, I am sharing this one while I am still somewhere inside the truth that gave birth to it.

For the famous and the forgotten.
For those carrying families and those carrying nations.
For those everybody calls strong.

And for the friend whose absence reminded me that sometimes, before a soul leaves this world, the greatest gift we can give is simply to let them know:

I see you.

I. The Summit of Silence

At the very top of the world, there is an unexpected silence.

Every year, men and women of extraordinary capability reach the exact destinations they spent decades attempting to climb. They win the final match. They build the billion-dollar enterprise. They complete the masterwork, claim the international prize, or see their names carved into the marble of public renown. Society greets them with a deafening chorus of applause. We build monuments to their discipline, print their faces on covers, and analyze their daily routines as if trying to decode a higher species.

Yet if you speak quietly with those who have stood atop those peaks - after the stadium empties, after the exchange closes, after the lights are switched off - you will often encounter a haunting, unspoken question:

Is this all there is?

It is a quiet melancholy, and it is far more common than our culture cares to admit. We have built a civilization obsessively designed to measure, celebrate, and reward the climb. We map the route to personal mastery with meticulous precision. But we have said almost nothing about what a human being is supposed to do once they actually reach the summit.

For centuries, humanity has operated under an unexamined assumption: that becoming extraordinary is the ultimate destination of human effort. We have equated greatness almost entirely with the magnitude of individual achievement. We measure it by the height of the trophy, the size of the fortune, the singularity of the genius, or the durability of the name left behind.

This view has created a quiet, two-fold tragedy.

For those at the top, it turns personal success into a gilded cage. It convinces our most capable minds that their work is finished the moment they reach personal mastery, leaving them to spend the second half of their lives maintaining their monuments, guarding their reputations, or chasing increasingly hollow echoes of their initial triumph.

And for everyone else, it creates a profound and damaging illusion. By defining greatness as a rare, solitary summit reserved only for global icons and prodigies, billions of human beings conclude that because they do not hold fame, vast capital, or extraordinary power, they possess no meaningful legacy or influence.

But what if this entire framework is fundamentally incomplete?

Not because personal achievement is unimportant. Excellence is magnificent. The discipline required to master a craft, discover a law of nature, or scale a human endeavor remains one of the most noble expressions of our species.

What if personal excellence is not the finish line of greatness, but merely the prerequisite? What if becoming extraordinary is not the end of the journey, but simply the entry ticket to a higher, rarely celebrated stage of human potential?

II. The Twin Pillars: Artifact and Engine

To re-examine greatness, we must first avoid a trap that has snared many well-intentioned thinkers. It is easy to fall into a cheap binary: to claim that individual achievement is selfish and that only social service or mentorship is noble.

History flatly rejects such simplicity.

Consider Emily Dickinson, sitting alone in her upstairs bedroom in Amherst, Massachusetts, writing nearly eighteen hundred revolutionary poems in near-total seclusion. She established no school. She trained no disciples. She hid her work in a dresser drawer, leaving it for the world to discover long after her death.

Consider Isaac Newton, an insular, deeply difficult man who worked in obsessive isolation at Woolsthorpe Manor to formulate the laws of motion and invent calculus. Or Nikola Tesla, who died penniless in a hotel room, leaving behind discoveries in alternating currents that powered the modern world, but leaving no institution or formal lineage of successors behind him.

Would anyone possess the intellectual arrogance to suggest that these individuals were not great?

Their legacy lives through the Solitary Artifact; a singular, transcendent output so powerful that its mere existence expands the boundaries of what humanity knows, feels, or understands. A brilliant symphony, a medical cure, a physical law, or a sublime work of literature does not need to run a workshop to justify its existence. The artifact itself is the contribution. It radiates through space and time, offering an unpayable gift to civilization.

Yet, history reveals a second, equally transcendent pillar of human progress: one that civilization has far less frequently analyzed or celebrated.

Call it the Generative Engine, or - i’m still trying to name the concept - Living Lineage.

When Socrates walked the streets of Athens, he wrote down no books. He left behind no monumental physical architecture. If judged strictly by his personal artifacts, his legacy might appear invisible. But Socrates built an engine of human transmission. He ignited the mind of Plato. Plato, challenging and refining his master’s frameworks, founded the Academy and cultivated Aristotle, who in turn dismantled parts of Platonism to pioneer natural logic and empirical observation. That chain reaction of critical inquiry eventually fueled the European Renaissance and the birth of modern science.

Look at the scientific ecosystem of Bell Labs in the mid-twentieth century. Rather than relying solely on isolated strokes of individual genius, Bell Labs intentionally designed a physical and cultural environment centered on unencumbered collaboration, cross-disciplinary debate, and active peer mentorship. That generative environment yielded nine Nobel Prizes, invented the transistor, developed information theory, created Unix, and laid the structural foundation for global digital computing.

The distinction between these two pillars is vital:

The Solitary Artifact expands what humanity can see. The Generative Engine ensures humanity maintains the capacity to build.

Artifacts build monuments to what human genius was. Engines guarantee what human potential can still become.

III. The Multiplier Threshold

If personal mastery is stage one, what occurs when a human mind chooses to step onto the horizon beyond it?

In the mid-twentieth century, psychoanalyst Erik Erikson observed that human development does not halt when an individual reaches physical or professional maturity. He posited that the primary psychological challenge of mature adulthood lies in the choice between two paths: Generativity vs. Stagnation.

Generativity, Erikson explained, is the active, deliberate drive to guide, establish, and enrich the next generation. It is the realization that one’s gifts are no longer meant to be hoarded as personal capital, but deployed as a fertile soil in which others can take root. Those who refuse this transition - who remain perpetually focused on their own performance, status, and self-preservation - frequently fall into psychological stagnation. They become prisoners of their own past successes, trapped in an endless effort to defend a peak they have already conquered.

Modern neurobiology and evolutionary anthropology confirm this psychological insight at a structural level. Humans did not rise to dominant civilizational capability because our ancestors possessed individually superior brains compared to rival species. We flourished because of our unique biological capacity for cumulative cultural evolution - our ability to transmit complex skills and abstract frameworks across generational lines without losing the progress made by those who came before.

Brain imaging reveals that guiding another human being toward mastery activates our neurological reward systems far more sustainably than personal achievement alone. Personal victory provides a quick, short-lived spike of neurochemical pleasure; generative investment produces a steady, long-term wellspring of intrinsic meaning.

This reveals a profound paradox: True greatness does not divide or diminish when shared; it compounds exponentially.

Consider the athletic arena, where personal dominance is quantifiable down to the millisecond. An elite athlete who spends their career breaking records achieves singular excellence. But an elite athlete who takes the distillation of twenty years of hard-won somatic wisdom, designs an academy, and intentionally trains a youth who subsequently surpasses their own world record has achieved something of a completely different order.

They have crossed the Multiplier Threshold.

They have shifted their life’s work from subtraction and competition - holding others off to remain number one - to multiplication and transmission: using their elevation as a launchpad for the next generation.

This second stage of greatness does not ask: “How many people admire me?” It asks: “Because of my mastery, how many others have gained the tools to become extraordinary in their own right?”

IV. The Democratic Horizon

Here we encounter the most vital reframe of all - one that strips the word Legend of its modern vanity and restores it to its proper civilizational weight.

For centuries, commercial culture has attempted to convince us that influence is synonymous with fame, net worth, or audience scale. It tells us that unless your voice reaches millions through a screen or a stadium, your life is lived on the sidelines of history.

This is a lie born of a hyper-individualistic age.

Influence is not determined by the size of an audience. It is determined by the depth and fidelity of transmission within your reach.

Every human being - regardless of their stage, title, or public profile - holds influence over someone.

The master carpenter who patiently shows a young apprentice how to feel the grain of the oak before making a cut is operating in the exact same generative tradition as the master philosopher in ancient Athens. The parent who teaches a child how to regulate fear, think critically, and act with moral integrity is engaging in civilizational transmission of the highest order. The community coach, the village schoolteacher, the quiet research lab supervisor, the regional artistic mentor—these are not spectators watching “legends” make history.

They are the active, indispensable architects of human continuity.

Think of the distinction between a mirror and a torch.

A mirror reflects light back onto itself. It demands that the world look at its polish, admire its frame, and celebrate its shine. Fame, celebrity, and ego-driven success operate like mirrors. They capture attention, but they generate no new energy.

A torch operates on a completely different principle. It uses its own fire to ignite another piece of wood. In doing so, it loses none of its original heat. Instead, it creates two sources of light where there was once only one. And when those two sources touch ten more, an entire forest is illuminated - long after the original torch has burned down to ash.

You do not need a global platform to be a torchbearer. You only need mastery over your craft - however humble - and the radical generosity to pass that mastery down unencumbered.

V. The Unanswered Door

We return, then, to the question that opened our inquiry:

What if humanity has misunderstood greatness?

What if greatness was never meant to be a static rank to be achieved and defended atop a lonely hill?

What if it is an infinite, self-renewing relay race - a continuous chain reaction of human capability passed from hand to hand across the generations?

This manifesto does not offer you a set of simplistic answers or a strategic blueprint. Blueprints belong to houses; we are designing the architecture of an ongoing exploration.

The mechanics of how this second stage lives across different domains - how an artist transmits craft without crushing original style; how a leader designs an enterprise that flourishes after their departure; how a scientist mentors without creating carbon copies; how a parent or teacher ignites potential without imposing rigid dogma; these are the deep, uncharted territories we must explore together.

That inquiry is the sole purpose of this series.

We do not invite you to agree with a doctrine. Agreement is cheap, temporary, and passive.

We invite you into wonder. We invite you to look at your own life, your own mastery, and the lives within your immediate reach through an entirely different lens.

If personal achievement is merely the summit of the first mountain...

If there is another, vastly larger horizon waiting beyond it...

If the highest form of human excellence lies in creating more excellence in others...

Then the question is no longer what you can achieve.

The question is simpler, deeper, and far more urgent:

Whose torch are you ready to light?

To the Legend Still Becoming

Dear Legend,

You probably expected this first letter to be addressed to someone else.

Perhaps to a world champion whose records seem untouchable.

A Nobel Prize winner whose discoveries changed the world.

A president whose decisions shaped nations.

An artist whose songs crossed oceans.

A name already engraved into history.

That expectation is understandable.

For most of our lives we have been taught to look upward whenever we search for greatness.

Toward the spotlight.

Toward the stage.

Toward the people everyone else already admires.

We have become remarkably skilled at recognizing extraordinary lives after history has finished writing their stories.

But history has a quieter habit.

Long before the applause...

before the interviews...

before the biographies...

before the statues...

there is always an ordinary morning.

Someone wakes before dawn.

Practices while no one is watching.

Returns after failure.

Keeps a promise no one would have known if they had broken it.

Learns.

Falls.

Begins again.

Every legend begins there.

That is why this first letter could never belong to someone already famous.

It belongs to someone still becoming.

It belongs to you.

Not because I know what you will accomplish.

I do not.

Not because I believe everyone is destined for worldwide recognition.

Very few are.

And certainly not because I wish to flatter you.

Flattery asks nothing of us.

This letter asks something far more beautiful.

It asks you to notice the influence you already carry.

Somewhere today, someone is learning from the way you respond to disappointment.

Someone is borrowing courage because you remained kind when anger would have been easier.

Someone is discovering integrity because you quietly kept your word.

Someone is finding hope because you chose not to surrender.

You may never know their names.

That does not make your influence any less real.

The deepest changes in human history have rarely announced themselves while they were happening.

Seeds grow in darkness.

So does character.

So does trust.

So does love.

The most important work in a human life is often invisible while it is taking place.

Perhaps that is why the people who shaped my own life rarely stood on famous stages.

Some taught me in classrooms.

Some corrected me on dojo floors.

Some worked beside me in places where earthquakes had erased certainty and compassion became more valuable than comfort.

None of them knew the full measure of what they were giving away.

That is the mystery of influence.

We almost never witness its harvest.

We simply plant.

Someone else gathers the fruit.

If this series has a single hope, it is not that you will admire remarkable people.

It is that remarkable people will encourage you to examine your own life with greater honesty and greater gratitude.

Because every human being receives something worth passing on.

A craft.

A conviction.

A kindness.

A discipline.

A story.

A question.

A way of seeing the world.

Whatever yours may be, it was probably never meant to end with you.

In the letters ahead, I will write to athletes, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, humanitarians and leaders whose names the world already knows.

Some may read them.

Most never will.

That has never been the deepest purpose.

The deeper purpose is this:

Every time you read a letter addressed to someone the world calls a legend...

remember another sentence.

That letter is also asking something of me.

Because greatness has never been a private possession.

It has always been a trust.

Some receive larger torches.

Some begin with only a spark.

The responsibility is never measured by the size of the flame.

Only by whether we choose to pass it forward.

So I will not ask whether the world will remember your name.

History has room for only a few famous people.

But the future has endless room for faithful ones.

Instead, I leave you with one final question.

When someone tells the story of their own becoming...

will there be a chapter that begins with you?

If the answer is yes, even for one life...

then you have already begun walking the road toward the kind of greatness this series hopes to explore.

Thank you for accepting the very first letter.

The next ones will be written to legends the world already celebrates.

This one could only be written to the legend the world has not yet learned to see.

When Many Hands Become One

Though mountains fall and rivers weep,
The human heart still learns to keep.

Though walls may break beneath the sky,
Compassion lifts what cannot die.

One hand brings bread, one hand brings light,
Together, both outshine the night.

No soul is small, no tear in vain,
Love finds a home through loss and pain.

May hope take root where sorrow stood,
And bloom from every selfless good.

For dignity is never gone,
It waits for hearts to carry on.

So let our hands, though oceans part,
Become one bridge from heart to heart.

To Venezuela, from every shore,
We stand with you, forevermore.

Here are the latest major developments:

• The two powerful earthquakes that struck north-central Venezuela on June 24 continue to have devastating consequences. The confirmed death toll has risen to more than 5,000 people, with approximately 17,000 injured. Thousands remain displaced, and some people are still unaccounted for.

• The humanitarian response has shifted from emergency rescue to early recovery. The greatest needs now are:

  • clean drinking water,

  • functioning healthcare,

  • psychosocial support,

  • temporary shelter,

  • and rebuilding essential infrastructure.

• Health experts are warning that the secondary crisis may become as dangerous as the earthquake itself. Damaged water systems, crowded shelters, dust, hazardous debris, and interrupted vaccination programs increase the risk of disease outbreaks and long-term health problems.

• The economic impact is staggering. A recent World Bank assessment estimates about $19.6 billion in direct physical damage, while the total cost of reconstruction could approach $50 billion.

• International organizations, including the IFRC, IOM, PAHO, the UN, and the European Union, continue to mobilize funding and humanitarian assistance, but aid agencies warn that international attention is already beginning to decline even though recovery will take years.

As someone who has spent years in humanitarian operations, I recognize a painful pattern: the cameras arrive with the earthquake, but rebuilding lives begins after the cameras leave. The weeks and months that follow are often the hardest, when communities must carry both grief and reconstruction at the same time.

The Price of Wisdom

In 2010, we stood beneath another broken sky, as a humanitarian.

The earthquake that struck Haiti changed our understanding of disaster forever. It taught us that earthquakes do not end when the ground becomes still. They continue through broken supply chains, overcrowded shelters, contaminated water, exhausted responders, grieving parents, forgotten children, and communities struggling to remember what normal once felt like.

Some lessons were learned through good decisions.

Too many were learned through unbearable loss.

Today, as Venezuela walks its own difficult road, this is not the moment to compare tragedies. Every nation carries its grief differently.

But humanitarian wisdom belongs to everyone.

If the suffering of one people can spare another even a little pain, then those hard-earned lessons become something sacred.

Dear Soul Riders,

If you’ve been ridin’ with me for a while, you’ve probably noticed something…

Sometimes… I disappear.

First of… never will I stop believing in what we’re building here.

It’s simply a rhythm I’ve never fully understoo… for years, I thought it was just how I was wired. I’d throw myself completely into a project, lose track of everything else then suddenly realize weeks had slipped by. Messages unanswered…. Beautiful articles unread. Conversations I genuinely wanted to have… postponed by another day that somehow disappeared too.

Lately, a few friends, fellow writers and Soul Riders have gently asked me the same question:

“Have you ever considered getting evaluated for ADHD?”

I’ll admit… the more I read about it, the more familiar some of it feels.

Maybe they’re onto something.

Maybe they’re not.

Right now, I’m not in a hurry to find out.

I’m not afraid of knowing…

Just… because I already have enough to carry at the moment. I want to meet this season with curiosity before I meet it with labels.

What I’ve discovered instead is that whether it’s ADHD, stress, or simply the weight of trying to build too many beautiful things at once, the remedies are surprisingly human.

Sleep a little better.

Move your body.

Write things down instead of trusting your memory with everything.

Give your keys the same place every day.

Protect your attention as if it were your most valuable possession, because maybe it is.

Reach out to someone before loneliness convinces you that nobody is waiting to hear from you.

None of these habits require a diagnosis.

Only a little honesty.

I’ve come to believe that discipline is less about control than compassion. Every small habit is a gift we leave for the version of ourselves that will wake up tomorrow. And yeah… it is still about becoming.

The other truth is, I’ve also had to accept something less comfortable.

I haven’t always been the reader or the friend I wanted to be.

I’ve missed articles that deserved applause.

I’ve forgotten birthdays, messages, and conversations that mattered.

If that’s ever been you, please know it was never indifference.

Not once.

Your words have carried me more often than you probably realize.

Even during my quiet seasons.

Especially then.

This community has become something rare.

A circle.

A place where strangers somehow learned to become companions on the same road.

That’s something I never take for granted.

The fire never left.

It was simply burning where roots grow instead of where applause lives🔥

Some seasons ask us to bloom.

Others ask us to deepen.

I’m learning not to confuse the two.

When the earth shook, it wasn’t just a crack in the pavement; it tore the social fabric of an entire nation to shreds. In the days that followed, survival was stripped of all its modern ornamentation. There was no electricity to buffer the night, no running water to wash away the soot, and no silence. The air was thick, heavy, and unforgettable; a suffocating mixture of pulverized drywall, burning diesel fuel, sweat, blood, and the raw, desperate murmurs of collective prayer.

As a becoming humanitarian working on those fractured streets, I walked through a landscape where tragedy was absolute. But in that same valley of dry bones, I witnessed something else: the quiet, stubborn majesty of the human spirit. I saw neighbors who had lost everything digging through mountains of jagged rebar with their bare hands to find children they did not know. I saw mothers sharing their last drops of clean water. In the absence of infrastructure, we discovered that humanity is built from far more than concrete. It is built from presence.

Months later, when the initial shockwaves had settled into the long, grueling ache of reconstruction, a visitor arrived.

Lionel Messi came to Haiti…

He did so under the quiet banner of UNICEF, stepping into his role as a global ambassador. Yet, there was no shielding of his status, no hollow public relations shield, and no distance kept behind tinted glass. He stepped directly into the dirt. He walked hand-in-hand with children who had lost their homes, stood beside families who had lost their limbs, and listened to a wounded nation. He did not arrive to perform charity for the lens; he arrived to use his global voice to ensure our tragedy was not met with silence. In that dust, he stood simply as a man offering his quiet presence and deep respect to those who felt forgotten.

In the world of sports, we are trained to judge men by their statistics. We count their goals, their trophies, their net worth, and their individual accolades. Being a witness of this event, I did not see the master of the pitch; I saw a soul who understood that when humanity is stripped to its barest essentials, the most sacred currency we possess is our presence.

In addition to his work with UNICEF, Leo founded his own charitable organization, the Leo Messi Foundation, which invests in Education and health-care services to improve children’s lives. Most recently, they supported research into childhood and adolescent cancer for more than 250000 children worldwide. The initiative was born from Leo's understanding, with the full support of his family, that all children should have the same opportunities to realize their dreams.

Think of it… Talent is a gift of nature. It can impress, startle, and entertain. But character is a choice. It is character that endures when the stadium lights are switched off and the applause of millions is replaced by the heavy silence of a devastated city. That day … of 2010… I stopped watching Lionel Messi to see how he played. I began watching him to see how he lived.

II. The Invisible Winter

Years after that encounter, following the legendary semifinal win against the 3 Lions of England in the 2026 World Cup, here I came across a reflection Messi shared about his preparation. He explained that he had spent nearly an entire year preparing for this single tournament. He spent the cold weeks of December back in Argentina, training relentlessly morning and afternoon, day after day. He said simply:

“I knew I was going to give everything I had to arrive in the best possible conditions.”

To the casual observer, this sounds like standard athletic commentary… the kind of motivational quote designed to be plastered over gym walls. But if you look beneath the words, you find a profound psychological map.

Observe what he did not say. He did not say, “I trained because I was guaranteed to win.” He did not say, “I sacrificed my rest because the trophy was already mine.”

He prepared because the preparation itself was the only thing within his sovereign control.

In a world obsessed with outcomes, we have developed a sickness of the spirit. We demand guarantees before we invest our energy. We ask: Will this business succeed? Will this person love me back? Will I get the promotion? Will I win the championship? And if the answer is not a resounding, guaranteed yes, we withhold our best. We hold back our love, we dial down our effort, and we preserve our energy so that we can protect our egos from the pain of failure.

But the master operates under a completely different law.

The master understands that you cannot control the wind; you can only align the sail. You cannot command the scoreboard; you can only consecrate your offering. When Messi stepped onto the pitch, his eight goals and 4 assist - at this point of the tournament - were not the result of magic; they were the inevitable harvest of an invisible winter spent training in Argentina while the rest of the world was resting. And look deeper still… That single winter was merely the latest leaf on a tree whose roots run through more than twenty years of relentless, unyielding effort. It was a harvest paid for by two decades of rises and falls; the agonizing heartbreaks with the national team, the near-misses, the premature retirements, the physical toll, and the crushing weight of a nation’s expectation. The master does not just honor the last season of preparation; he honors the entire lifetime of scar tissue that made the preparation possible. The effort belonged to him. The outcome belonged to the game, and yes, the victories played their part as well in his becoming.

III. Sacrificium: To Make Sacred

We live in an era that has made the word sacrifice look like a tragedy. We speak of sacrifice as if it is a form of self-punishment, a joyless surrender of life’s pleasures, or a heavy burden forced upon us by circumstance. We hear the word and we feel smaller, colder, and more restricted.

But this is a modern distortion of an ancient truth.

The word sacrifice comes from the Latin sacrificium: constructed from sacer (sacred) and facere (to make).

To sacrifice does not mean to lose. It means to make sacred.

When you choose to sacrifice your comfort, your sleep, your leisure, or your immediate gratification for a higher purpose, you are not throwing your life away. You are elevating it. You are declaring that there is something within your life - your art, your family, your craft, your dojo, your calling - that is worthy of your highest devotion. You are deciding to lift your daily actions out of the mud of convenience and place them into the realm of the sacred.

Many people are driven by motivation. They work when conditions are favorable, inspiration arrives, confidence is high, and life feels cooperative. But motivation is an unreliable companion. It rises with praise and fades with criticism. It changes with the weather, the headlines, and the opinions of strangers. Discipline asks for none of those things. The master does not wait to feel ready. The master has made the work sacred. They do not show up because they feel inspired. They show up because this is who they have become.

Inspiration is lightning: brilliant, spectacular, and impossible to command. Discipline is sunrise: quiet, faithful, and persistent. One illuminates the sky for a moment. The other grows forests for generations. Win or lose, the master returns tomorrow, because the practice was never about the trophy. It was always about the becoming.

IV. The Fox, the Grapes, and the Ego

To understand why so few people choose this path, we must look at the stories we tell ourselves to survive our own disappointments.

In an Aesop’s ancient fable, widely integrated, adapted, and expanded upon by classic persian poets and philosophers, a hungry fox spots a cluster of rich, purple grapes hanging from a high vine. He steps back, springs into the air, and misses. He tries again, utilizing every ounce of his strength, but the branch is just beyond his reach. Panting, exhausted, and bruised, he walks away, nose in the air, muttering to himself: “They were probably sour anyway.”

We are taught to read this story as a simple lesson in rationalization, but it is actually a diagnostic study of human identity.

When faced with the gap between his current ability and his deep desire, the fox had two choices:

1. He could accept his current limitation and say, “The grapes are sweet, but I am not yet a good enough jumper. I must return to the forest and grow stronger.”

2. He could shrink the dream to match his current reality and say, “The grapes were never worth the jump anyway.”

The first choice is painful. It requires us to look into the mirror of our own inadequacy, to accept that we are not yet ready, and to embrace the long, quiet road of transformation.

The second choice is easy. It allows us to protect our ego by devaluing the very thing we once desired.

How often do we walk through life playing the role of the fox?

“I never really wanted to write that book anyway.”

“That business was too risky; I’m glad I didn’t start it.”

“That relationship would have been too much work.”

“That level of mastery is only for people with natural talent.”

Every time we make the grapes sour, we shrink our world. We build a fortress of excuses to protect ourselves from the discomfort of growth.

But champions refuse to make the grapes smaller. They do not look at a high branch and demand that the fruit hang lower. They look at their own limitations, they step back into the quiet of their preparation, and they become better climbers.

V. Adapting in the Storm: The Sacred Dojo

In a previous chapter, we spoke of the Inner Fire… that raw, unpolished spark of potential that exists within every human soul. It is the voice that whispers of what could be, the internal heat that fuels our dreams.

But fire without a hearth is a hazard; it burns down the very house it was meant to warm. Fire needs a temple. It needs a forge. It needs the structure of discipline to turn wild energy into focused power. Without discipline, your inspiration will evaporate like mist in the morning sun. Without purpose, your discipline will feel like a prison sentence. But when they are united, they form the bedrock of becoming.

This integration is critical when we are forced to navigate the unpredictable storms of life. Whether you are practicing Aikido on a polished mat, steering a vehicle through a midnight rainstorm to hit a driving goal, or managing the shifting logistics of a public sector crisis, you will eventually meet the limits of your control.

Chaos is not an anomaly; it is a permanent feature of the human landscape.

Through my years in humanitarian work, I learned a brutal but beautiful truth: Disasters do not ask if you are ready. They simply arrive. When the ground opens up or the storm hits, you do not rise to the height of your ambitions. You fall to the level of your preparation.

Preparation is not an act of fear or paranoia. It is an act of supreme self-respect. It is the gift that your today’s disciplined self offers to the future version of you who will one day stand in the center of the storm and need to find clarity.

When you make your preparation sacred, you develop emotional agility. You stop fighting the reality of change and you begin to dance with it. You realize that a setback is not a red light; it is simply a change in the terrain. If you are injured, the healing process becomes your sacred work. If your business fails, the post-mortem analysis becomes your sacred text. If a door closes, the search for the next threshold becomes your sacred walk.

You no longer ask the world to be easy. You simply ask your soul to remain steady.

VI. The Invisible Architecture of the Universe

We live in a culture that celebrates the achievement because it photographs well.

We take pictures of the podium, we write articles about the final score, and we parade the trophies through the streets. But achievement is a temporary event. It belongs to a single season, a fleeting moment in time that immediately begins to decay. Trophies tarnish. Records are broken. The crowds eventually go home, the stadium empty, the grass silent.

But becoming is permanent.

The physical strength, the mental resilience, the emotional agility, and the profound depth of character you forged during those thousands of lonely hours in the dark; those cannot be taken from you by a referee, an opponent, or a bad bounce of the ball. They have become part of your very DNA.

Yet, there is a final, deeper layer to this philosophy that goes beyond the boundary of the self.

Many philosophies of self-improvement stop at success: How do I win? Many spiritual traditions stop at personal peace: How do I find quiet?

But the path of Built by Becoming must end in contribution.

When you choose to Make It Sacred, you are no longer just practicing self-help. You are participating in the evolution of life itself. The Universe does not care about the gold medal around your neck or the balance in your bank account. The Universe remembers the energy you transformed while you were here.

It remembers:

• The fear you felt but refused to pass on to your children.

• The kindness you chose to offer a stranger when bitterness would have been so much easier.

• The integrity you maintained in the dark when nobody was watching to applaud you.

• The quiet courage that gave someone else the silent permission to begin their own journey.

Every act of sacred discipline leaves a permanent fingerprint on eternity. You are building the invisible architecture of hope, resilience, and strength from which future generations - including the children watching us today - will draw their own courage. But for those who have traveled this inner path, the real game has already been played.

The victory will not be decided by the tactics on the field or the whistle of the referee. It was decided months ago in the heat of an Argentine summer, in the double-sessions of quiet preparation of the teams, and in the private choices to give everything when nobody was looking. The scoreboard will record a winner, but life has already recorded the transformation of the men who dared to make their preparation sacred.

• It may happen in the quiet of your own mind when the voice of doubt screams at you to drop the grapes and walk away.

When that day comes, do not look around for the cameras. Do not wait for the world to notice your struggle or validate your pain.

Look inward. Ask yourself only this:

Have I made this sacred?

Have I honored the fire that was placed inside my soul? Have I respected the future version of myself by doing the hard work today? Have I offered my absolute best to this moment, regardless of whether I am guaranteed to win or destined to lose?

Let the world chase the trophies that gather dust. Your path is different.

Win or lose... make your preparation sacred.

For the scoreboard will eventually fade into history. But who you became...

Dear Soul Riders,

These last few days have reminded me that life has a strange way of placing fire and rain in the same sky.

Love can still hurt... and somehow still make us grateful it ever found us.

I miss my children more than words can carry, yet my stepchildren continue to remind me that love has never been limited by blood. Family has many ways of finding us.

My mother gave us a scare, but grace was already waiting at the door. She’s recovering well, and my father is taking beautiful care of her.

On the tatami, my knee has been arguing with me. Aikido and Iaido have become humbling teachers again. Every step asks a little more patience than the one before.

And life... well... life never seems to run out of battles.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned... among a few😊

It’s that every setback carries an invitation.

Sometimes a setback is simply life asking us to sit quietly... long enough to meet our inner fire.

Mine has never been the loudest.

It has simply refused to die.

There always seems to be an Amen hiding inside my step backs.

So we keep riding.

One little step at a time.

Sometimes we walk.

Sometimes we crawl.

And sometimes...

when the rain is just right...

we even dare to dance.

Because dancing isn’t pretending the storm has ended.

Soul Riders,

The lights go up, the cameras zoom in, and Haiti finally steps back onto the World Cup stage. It should be a moment of pure, unadulterated transcendence, a nation rising above its fractured geography to breathe the rarefied air of global excellence. The stadium is a sea of anticipation. The players line up, chests out, ready to sing.

But before the first note of La Dessalinienne can even clear the speakers, the governing bodies of global sport lean in with a bureaucratic whisper. They ask Haiti to lower the volume of its memory. They point to the fabric. They point to the ghost of Vertières woven into the kit, and they call it a violation. They call it “political.”

Before Haiti is even allowed to play, it is asked to undress.

The Thunder of 1803

To understand the violence of this request, one must understand what Vertières actually is. It is not a mere date in a textbook. It is not propaganda, nor is it a partisan slogan. Vertières is the final, world-shattering thunder of the Haitian Revolution. It is November 18, 1803, the moment an army of the self-liberated met the elite forces of Napoleon Bonaparte - the undisputed masters of European warfare - and broke them.

Vertières is the historical tear in the fabric of the old world, the exact coordinate where enslaved people forced humanity to recognize Black freedom not as a negotiation, but as an absolute truth. It is the bedrock of Haitian nationhood. To look at the imagery of Vertières and see a violation of “neutrality” is to look at the foundations of human liberty and call it a zoning infraction.

A Jersey Is Never Just Cloth

National kits are often treated by corporate sponsors as mere athletic wear, but they are actually flags in motion. They carry symbols, history, colors, pain, pride, and identity. When a player pulls that fabric over their head, they are pulling on the expectations and the heritage of an entire populace.

For Haiti, placing Vertières on the jersey is not a marketing gimmick or a decorative trend. It is a physical manifestation of a psychological reality: this nation was born from impossible courage. To wear it on the pitch is to remind the world that the people running across that grass are the descendants of those who achieved the unthinkable.

The Architecture of Dignity

Let us speak clearly about the nature of dignity. A nation does not exist merely because it has borders, an economy, or a seat at the United Nations. A nation exists because it possesses a collective memory—a shared understanding of how it came to be, and what it cost to arrive. Symbolism is the language through which this memory is transmitted across generations.

When we weave Vertières into the fabric of our sportswear, we are not engaging in a provocative political act; we are exercising the fundamental right of a people to carry their ancestors into the future. To demand the removal of this imagery is to demand a form of cultural amnesia. It is an assertion that Haiti may participate in the modern world, but only if it agrees to leave the source of its strength at the door. We are being asked to validate a global hierarchy that remains deeply uncomfortable with the aesthetics of Black triumph.

Taking History by the Throat

Let’s cut through the polite, diplomatic garbage. The world isn’t afraid of Haitian politics. The world is afraid of Haitian memory.

They don’t want Vertières on that shirt because Vertières ruins the narrative. It reminds them that the enslaved didn’t beg for freedom. They didn’t sign a treaty drafted by their masters. They didn’t wait for a benevolent decree from a distant capital. They took history by the throat and made it answer.

Look at what is permitted on the pitches of the world. Empires display their crowns. Nations wear jerseys adorned with imperial lions, royal crests, and symbols of colonial conquest. Nobody calls the British three lions “political,” even though those lions walked across half the globe in blood. But the moment the victims of that global expansion wear the symbol of the day they fought back and won, the bureaucrats get nervous. The comfort of the powerful will always demand the invisibility of the revolutionary.

The Politics of Calling Memory Political

The institutional defense for this censorship is always “neutrality.” Sports organizations claim they want to keep the pitch free from the messy, divisive arguments of the world outside. But this neutrality is an illusion. It is a status-quo mechanism that treats the memory of empires as normal, while labeling the memory of the oppressed as an agitation.

Haiti is a country that the international community is entirely comfortable viewing through a very specific lens. The world understands Haiti through poverty. It understands Haiti through crisis, through gangs, through earthquakes, through foreign aid, and through eternal tragedy. The world is highly practiced in the language of pity.

But when Haiti appears through the lens of victory, resistance, and revolutionary pride, the machinery of global consensus stalls. Pity is easy; respect is terrifying. Vertières forces a confrontation with a truth that many would rather forget: that Haiti’s current suffering is not a product of its culture, but the historical punishment inflicted upon it for daring to be free.

The Blood Remembers

Haiti does not need to beg for permission to be proud, nor does it need an international committee to validate the significance of its ancestors. The value of Vertières does not depend on whether it is approved by a technical meeting in a European boardroom.

The world may succeed in altering the design of a shirt. They may force the removal of a silhouette or the modification of a crest to satisfy the anxieties of their sponsors. But no institution, no regulation, and no referee can remove Vertières from the reality of what Haiti is.

So I’ll leave you staying with this quote from my soul Nemesis, The Rider:

You can take Vertières off the shirt.

You cannot take Vertières out of Haiti.

The cloth may change.

The blood remembers.

how to become a roof…

They only hand him names,
small hands,
old expectations,
a father’s unfinished weather,
a mother’s quiet sacrifices,
and say:

So he stands.

Even when his knees
are writing letters his mouth refuses to deliver.

Even when the boy inside him
is still looking for someone
to ask if he is tired.

Even when love becomes math,
and math becomes rent,
and rent becomes fuel,

A family man learns early
that hunger has many languages.

There is the hunger of children
waiting for food.

The hunger of a woman
waiting to be seen.

The hunger of parents
waiting to know
their son did not cross oceans
just to disappear inside survival.

The hunger of siblings,
memories, ancestors,
all those voices in the blood
saying:

do not drop the name…🔥

So he carries it.

The family name.
The father name.
The son name.
The husband name.
The provider name.
The immigrant name.
The oldest-child name.
The almost-broken-but-not-finished name.

He carries them
until his own name
starts sounding distant.

Until people ask,
“How are you?”
and he answers with logistics.

I’m working.
I’m driving.
I’m handling it.
I’m good.

But good
is sometimes just a locked room
wearing clean clothes.

Good
is sometimes the mask
a man puts on
so the children do not learn fear
from his face.

Good
is sometimes a prayer
with no poetry left in it.

And still,
he loves.

Not always softly.
Not always correctly.
Not always in the language
others needed from him.

Sometimes his love came out
as control.

Sometimes his fear
wore the jacket of anger.

Sometimes his silence
stood in the room
like another man.

Sometimes he hurt
the very people
he was trying to protect
because nobody showed him
how to hold fire
without burning the bowl.

And that is the part
a family man carries deepest:

not only what he suffered,
but what he failed to soften
before it reached the ones he loved.

The words he swallowed.

The words he should have swallowed.

The apologies that arrived late.

The hugs he imagined
but did not give.

The nights he was present in the house
but absent in the heart.

The birthdays he tried to save.

The moments he missed
while chasing the money
that was supposed to protect
the moments.

There is a grief
inside responsible men
that has no funeral.

A grief for the version of themselves
their children never met.

A grief for the tenderness
they had to bury
under duty.

A grief for the wife
who needed a lover
and found a soldier.

A grief for the mother
who raised a son
and watched him become
a country of pressure.

A grief for the father
who gave him strength
but maybe not enough permission
to be weak.

And then there is the wife.

Not a side note.

Not a villain.

Not a witness
standing safely outside the fire.

A wife fighting her own battles
that he does not always see.

A wife carrying wounds
that do not knock politely
before entering the room.

A wife with her own childhood echoes,
her own disappointments,
her own prayers
that came back tired.

A wife who looks at him sometimes
and wonders why the man
who can carry the world
cannot always carry her gently.

A wife who may be tired
of being told he is tired.

A wife who may be hurting
in places his strength
does not know how to reach.

And does she understand?

Does she have to?

Does she have to know
the weight of every road he drove,
every bill that hunted him,
every country he missed,
every fear he folded
and hid behind his ribs?

Does she have to understand
that some mornings
he woke up already defeated
but still put on his face
like a uniform?

Does she have to understand
that his silence
was not always absence,
but sometimes a man
trying not to collapse
in front of the people
who needed him standing?

Maybe not.

Maybe love is not always
two people understanding
the same pain.

Maybe sometimes love
is two exhausted souls
standing on opposite sides
of the same fire,
both wondering
why the other does not feel the heat.

She is fighting too.

That is the part
his pain must learn
without turning defensive.

She is fighting too.

Fighting memories
he did not create.

Fighting disappointments
he did not fully understand.

Fighting fears
that may wear his name
even when he is not
the original wound.

Fighting the ache
of wanting tenderness
from a man
who comes home armored.

Fighting the loneliness
of lying beside someone
whose body is there
but whose spirit
is still on the road.

And maybe she does not understand him
because she is also surviving.

Maybe she cannot read his wounds
because her own hands
are full of bandages.

Maybe she cannot hear
the boy inside him crying
because the girl inside her
is still waiting
to be rescued too.

So the family man learns
a harder truth:

being misunderstood
does not always mean
being unloved.

Sometimes the person beside you
is not ignoring your pain.

Sometimes they are drowning
close enough to touch you,
but too far gone
to save you.

And what do two drowning people do
when both were taught
to become lifeboats?

They blame the waves.

They blame the silence.

They blame each other’s breathing.

They turn old wounds
into fresh evidence.

They measure who gave more.

Who stayed longer.

Who broke quieter.

Who carried heavier.

Who became colder first.

Until the home becomes a courtroom
where love sits in the back
with its head down.

Until every sentence
starts wearing armor.

Until “I am hurt”
comes out as attack.

Until “I need you”
comes out as accusation.

Until “please see me”
comes out as distance.

And somewhere in the middle
of all that smoke,
two people who once wanted peace
forget they are not enemies.

They forget
they are both tired.

They forget
that pain can make good people
sound cruel.

They forget
that survival,
left unchecked,
can become a language
no one wants to live inside.

A family man must face this too:

his pain is real,
but it is not the only pain
in the house.

His sacrifices matter,
but they do not erase
her loneliness.

His exhaustion is heavy,
but it does not give him permission
to disappear emotionally
and call it provision.

His silence may have protected him,
but it may have abandoned her.

His discipline may have built walls
that kept danger out,
but kept tenderness out too.

And still,
this does not make him evil.

It makes him human.

A man learning late
what nobody taught him early.

A man discovering
that strength without softness
can become another form of absence.

A man realizing
that feeding the house
is not the same
as being home.

That paying the bills
does not always pay attention.

That staying
does not always mean connecting.

That love
cannot survive forever
on duty alone.

And maybe the wife
has her own lessons too.

Maybe she must learn
that not every silence
is rejection.

Not every tired face
is indifference.

Not every unfinished sentence
means he does not care.

Maybe she must learn
that some men were trained
to bleed inward.

That some men were praised
only when useful.

That some men confuse being needed
with being loved
because that is the only altar
they were ever allowed to kneel before.

But does she have to understand
every corridor of his darkness?

No.

She does not have to become
the translator of his wounds.

She does not have to mother
the boy inside the man.

She does not have to disappear
inside his pressure
to prove she loves him.

And he does not have to be perfect
to deserve to be seen.

He does not have to have
the right language
for every scar.

He does not have to turn pain
into poetry
before someone believes
it was heavy.

Maybe the work
is not to force one heart
to carry the entire map
of the other.

Maybe the work
is to stop making darkness
the only language
left between them.

To say:

Here is where I hurt.

Not as a weapon.

Here is where I failed.

Not as a prison.

Here is what I carried.

Not as a crown.

Here is where I still need you.

Not as a chain.

And if she can hear it,
may grace enter.

And if he can hear her,
may pride step aside.

And if they both are too tired,
may silence stop pretending
to be peace.

Because peace is not
two people avoiding the truth.

Peace is two trembling voices
finally choosing
not to turn pain
into a knife.

Somewhere in the ruins
of every exhausted man
who still shows up,
there is a candle
refusing the wind.

Not a loud flame.

Not a holy performance.

Just a small, stubborn light
saying:

I am still here.

Still learning.

Still breaking old curses
with shaking hands.

Still trying to become
the first safe man
in a long line
of men who survived
more than they explained.

Because maybe being a family man
was never about being unshakable.

Maybe it was about learning

I have been quiet lately… just quiet.

I choose not to obscure this space with excessive explanations. Certain seasons demand stillness rather than public confession, and some valleys are meant to be crossed without a dramatic soundtrack. True resilience isn’t found in relentless external force; it emerges when we face the essential work of calming the storm inside our own chests.

So I return the only way I promised myself I would: taking one small, definitive step. We move forward one page at a time, allowing presence to speak directly through this journal.

Perhaps this is the defining realization of Stage 6: The Glimpse. Emerging from the depths, emergence isn’t always marked by a loud declaration. Often, it is marked by a steady breath. We return more deliberate, more grounded, focused less on transient happiness and deeply committed to the discipline of internal peace. Authentic peace requires confronting reality, because it is impossible to look at the world today and pretend everything remains unshakeable… Oil prices fluctuate on financial screens, but the real impact settles heavily in everyday kitchens. Every shifting metric carries a human cost; a distant conflict materializes locally as a higher utility bill, a blocked transit route translates directly to more expensive meals, and global instability ultimately strains a parent calculating expenses down the supermarket aisle.

This is the stark reality of modern global crises: structural distance offers no protection to the vulnerable. Our world is profoundly interconnected, yet connectivity without conscious empathy creates a system that pressures the fragile first. Still, we are required to step forward. We do so not out of apathy or blind surrender, but because a true purpose remains constant regardless of our immediate emotional state.

That clarity is exactly why this stage opens with a reflection on Michael Jackson. I didn’t initially intend to introduce his legacy here, but a specific realization remained with me after revisiting his work. His 1993 Super Bowl performance stood as a profound demonstration of presence. At that time, I was still a kid myself, probably more interested in playing soccer - real football😊 - in the streets of Pétion-Ville than sitting still in front of a television. The world could be making history on a screen, and we would still be chasing a ball between dust, concrete, laughter, and someone’s mother calling from a balcony.

But that is not the point.

The point is that when I look back at Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl performance now, I see something I could not have fully understood then.

Perhaps our choice resides entirely in the initial commitment and the daily decision to show up. We retain control over whether our individual talents serve as a genuine contribution or mere ego, a healing medicine or a performance, a shelter for others or empty noise. Yet, profound callings rarely wait for an invitation before they begin to demand our focus. They frequently arrive long before we feel fully prepared, and our gifts transition into responsibilities the exact moment they begin to impact the lives of others.

This is where the transition truly takes shape. It does not wait for flawless conditions, easy circumstances, or the illusion that every old wound has vanished. Instead, it begins with the first precise realization after surviving the dark: the understanding that past adversity does not define the entire narrative, that temporary silence was never a permanent end, and that our capabilities are meant to be shared. True capability, when detached from accountability, inevitably degrades into a subtle form of harm.

The challenges of the world have not softened, and the daily news has not grown gentler. However, the internal vision has restored its focus. This time, Soul Rider, we are not seeking convenience. We are asking a far more elevated question: What will our unique contribution heal?

We cannot claim to be healing our world if we are failing to build structures that protect and empower the younger generation. Shielding them from the immediate cruelties and exploitative machinery of modern life is a vital baseline, but protection alone is a passive strategy. We must actively prepare them to stand. We must provide them with unshakeable roots, severe discipline, and examples of power that refuse to humiliate or break when conditions grow dark. We must teach them that true healing is not a soft sentiment; it is spiritual logistics, a rigorous strategy, and the exact architecture required to make love sustainable.

No one carries the road alone. But as you step forward into the light, remember that the dawn is more than a reward for surviving the cave… it is a summons.

We must explicitly engineer their capacity to stand independently. We fail them if we merely preach strength while demonstrating behavior that humiliates others, just as we fail them if we demand global transformation without proving we can master our own impulses when no one is watching.

Soul Rider,

As we close this issue, I carry a special thought for my former schoolmate and friend Michael Benjamin, Mikaben.

Not fame.

Not being understood by everyone.
Not winning every argument.
Not even the comfort I sometimes wish I could disappear into.

The mission is to become the kind of man whose children can inherit more than survival.

A clearer mirror.
A steadier flame.
A deeper root.
A stronger language for their own light.

Because the younger generation does not only need protection. They need preparation. They need to know how to carry their gifts without being consumed by them. They need to know how to enter a loud world without losing their inner music.

The world often demands that we be unbreakable. We are told that strength is a monolith… a rigid, unyielding wall that stands against the wind until it eventually cracks. But true mastery is not found in the absence of the storm; it is found in the way we move through it. Force is a hammer; alignment is the gravity that moves the tide; and to be unstoppable is to stop fighting the friction and start being the flow.

This is the fourth step in our journey together, where we arrive at the most volatile territory of the human experience: the emotional landscape; if it remains unmapped. Here, conquering is a siege; harmony is a symphony, where true mastery begins when the battle against the self ends.

Emotional Agility: The Skill That Changes Everything

Most people treat their emotions like uninvited guests. They either lock the door and pretend no one is home, or they let the guest take over the house, rearranging the furniture and screaming in the hallways. Neither approach leads to freedom.

Emotional agility is your ability to navigate emotions with flexibility and clarity. It is the middle path between repression and explosion. While emotional intelligence involves recognizing what you feel, emotional agility is the kinetic application of that knowledge. It is the grace to feel a wave of anger or fear, acknowledge its presence, and choose a response that aligns with your highest values rather than your immediate impulse.

When we lack this agility, we become brittle. We get “hooked” by a single thought or a fleeting feeling, allowing it to dictate our narrative for hours, days, or even years. This is how stagnation begins. It’s about not getting stuck in negativity or overwhelmed by stress. When you are agile, you view your emotions as data points rather than directives.

The first movement of agility is the pause. In that sliver of time between a stimulus and your reaction, there is a space where your entire future is decided. In that space, we apply the practice of naming. Research suggests that the simple act of labeling what you feel reduces their power over you. When you say, “I am having the thought that I am failing,” rather than “I am a failure,” you create a vital distance. You move from being the storm to being the observer of the storm. With emotional agility, decision-making improves as emotions no longer cloud your judgment. You begin to see the world as it is, not as your fear paints it.

The Myth of Strength (and What It Really Is)

We have been sold a lie about what it means to be strong. We are taught that strength is the absence of doubt, the suppression of pain, and the relentless pursuit of “more.” But this version of strength is a hollow shell. It is exhausting to maintain and even easier to shatter.

Real strength is a subterranean river; it flows beneath the surface, persistent and quiet. Strength isn’t about being invincible; it’s about being resilient and courageous. It is the willingness to be seen in your struggle and the discipline to continue when the applause has died down.

Inner strength is less something you invent or manifest through sheer willpower than something you discover. It is already there, buried under the sediment of social expectations and self-doubt. To activate it, you do not need more muscle; you need more awareness. You must look at the moments where you survived what you thought would break you. That Survival is the blueprint of your resilience… the structural integrity of a soul designed to carry weight without buckling.

When we reframe strength as resilience, it becomes a skill we can practice. It becomes the ability to absorb a blow, learn from the impact, and return to center. This is the essence of being unstoppable. Falling is merely a data point in the physics of progress. To be unstoppable is to possess an internal gravity so potent that your natural state is upright. You stand back up… and you recalibrate your weight until every step is an inevitable movement toward your highest self.

You don’t always recognize the moment that alters your trajectory.

Often, it doesn’t arrive as a breakthrough, but as a door that swings toward you, reveals a glimpse of the future, and then begins to close. For a group of young artists standing at the edge of Oxford, the invitation was the dream; the obstacle was the access.

Imagine that standing. You have done the work. You have earned the space. You can already feel the weight of the person you are about to become. And then reality whispers, almost gently: Not this time.

The Inner Obstacles No One Talks About

To reach this state of alignment, we must confront the gatekeepers of the ego. Two shadows, in particular, stand between us and our inner strength: the fear of vulnerability and the persistent whisper of imposter syndrome.

We often mistake vulnerability for weakness. In reality, vulnerability is the most accurate measurement of courage. To choose alignment over force requires us to be honest about our limits. If you cannot admit where you are weak, you can never become truly strong. You will simply be a person pretending to be strong, which is the most fragile state of all.

Imposter syndrome is the secondary barrier. It tells you that your progress is a fluke, that your insights are borrowed, and that eventually, the world will see you are “just” human. The secret to overcoming this is to accept the premise: Yes, you are “just” human. And being human is the very thing that gives you access to the resilience we are discussing. Imposter syndrome only thrives when we try to be perfect. When we commit to being aligned, the need for perfection vanishes. We are no longer performing; we are simply being.

Building Your Resilience Toolbox

Moving beyond a personality trait: resilience is a mechanic of adaptation, a system. Just as a craftsman relies on a set of instruments to shape wood or stone, the unstoppable individual relies on a specific set of practices to shape their internal state.

Creating a resilience toolbox starts with personalizing your tools. What works for the monk may not work for the executive; what works in the morning may not work in the heat of a crisis. This is a living kit, designed by you, for you.

1. The Somatic Anchor: When the mind spins, we return to the body. This might be a specific breathing pattern - four seconds in, four seconds out - or the physical sensation of feet pressing into the floor. This anchors the nervous system.

2. The Narrative Audit: This is the practice of journaling with a specific focus on reframing. We take the “facts” of a difficult day and look for the hidden growth. We do not lie to ourselves; we simply choose a more productive perspective.

3. The Ritual of Return: These are small, non-negotiable routines that provide stability when the external world is in chaos. It could be the way you prepare your coffee, a ten-minute walk in silence, or a specific visualization before you begin your work.

Flexibility is key; adapt tools to fit different situations. There will be days when your standard routine feels impossible. In those moments, your toolbox should offer a “minimum viable practice”… a smaller, more accessible version of your rituals that keeps the pilot light of your discipline burning.

From Control to Alignment

The ultimate goal of this journey is not control. Control is an illusion that requires constant effort and creates immense friction. The goal is alignment.

When you are aligned, your internal world and your external actions are in a state of resonance. You are no longer fighting yourself to get things done. Discipline stops feeling like a punishment and starts feeling like self-respect. You do the work not because you “have to,” but because it is the natural expression of who you are.

In this state, effort transforms into momentum. You move with a quiet authority. Decisions that used to take hours now take seconds because you have a clear internal compass. You are no longer looking for validation from the outside, because you have found a steady source of it within. This is the path to becoming unstoppable: a journey from the noisy surface of our impulses to the silent depth of our true nature.

Mindset Exercise: The Three-Step Alignment Check

This exercise is designed to be used in real-time, especially when you feel the onset of stress or emotional turbulence.

1. Label and Localize (60 Seconds) Close your eyes. Identify the primary emotion you are feeling. Instead of saying “I am stressed,” say “I am noticing a feeling of stress.” Now, find where that feeling lives in your body. Is it a tightness in the chest? A knot in the stomach? Observe it without trying to change it.

2. The Values Filter (60 Seconds) Ask yourself: “If I acted on this feeling right now, would I be moving toward the person I want to be, or away from them?” This creates a cognitive gap between the impulse and the action.

3. The Commitment Breath (60 Seconds) Take three deep breaths. On each exhale, mentally release the need to control the situation. On each inhale, visualize pulling in the strength of your “Resilience Toolbox.” Choose one small, intentional action to take next… something as simple as writing one sentence or making one phone call.

The Integration of Self

The path we are walking is not linear. You will have days where your agility feels like clunky stumbling. You will have moments where your “toolbox” feels empty. This is not a failure of the system; it is part of the process.

Rather than a destination, alignment is the rhythm of internal recalibration. You are like a pilot constantly adjusting the controls to stay on course. Each time you name a difficult emotion, each time you choose resilience over despair, and each time you return to your rituals, you are strengthening the architecture of your soul.

You are becoming the person who can handle the weight of their own potential. You are becoming unstoppable, not because the obstacles have vanished, but because you have finally realized that you are the one who determines their meaning.

This stage was never meant to feel light.

If you have been moving through these last issues with a strange mix of clarity and fatigue - if something in you feels quieter, but heavier - know this: You are not off track. You are simply inside the work.

Recently, during Holy Week, I returned to the mat. Aikido. Iaido. Simple training on the surface. But something shifted… again…

I was introduced to a kata I hadn’t fully understood until now: Junto.

Beyond mere technique, it settled within me, a permanent weight. Because Junto transcends the simple cessation of combat; it is the gateway to the Honor that can only be forged once the struggle has been stilled. It is the role of the Kaishaku: the witness who stands behind a man at the ultimate edge of his limit.

This is a responsibility most will never face. It is the duty to act as a custodian of another’s dignity. When a warrior has laid himself completely bare, the Junto is the final handshake. It is the silent vow that says: I will not allow your sacrifice to turn into a spectacle. I will not let your soul be mocked by its own pain.

Not to dominate. Not to hesitate. But to act with a level of precision that preserves Integrity in the final moment.

I sat with that silence. And the deeper I went, the more it stopped being about the body and started being about us.

We are the only beings capable of taking something as final as death and turning it into a ritual of respect, or into a theater of humiliation. That realization does not stay in the dojo. It follows you into the world we inhabit right now.

A world where tension is the air we breathe. Where escalation is closer than resolution. Where people would rather watch a fracture than offer the grace of a clean finish.

It forces a question that is uncomfortable, but unavoidable: What do we actually do with power?

Do you have the honor - or the power - to end your own internal suffering cleanly? To say to yourself, “The lesson is learned, the accountability is met, and I will no longer allow my spirit to linger in the heat of this shame”?

Or do you lack the restraint to let the mistake die so the man can live?

Stage 5 was never about darkness. It is about truth under pressure. And pressure reveals a pattern most avoid seeing: The way you treat yourself when you are at your lowest; the honor you grant or withhold from your own soul, is the same pattern that scales into how nations escalate.

Ultimate confrontation bypasses the world entirely, settling deep within that volatile part of the self that lacks the discipline to stop.

The part that prefers the “spectacle” of self-punishment over the “honor” of restoration. That voice learned, long ago, that staying small was safer than stepping forward, and now, it is still holding you there.

This issue renounces the role of motivator; it serves strictly as a mirror.

How you hold power over yourself is how you will hold it over others. We don’t need more noise. We don’t need more people proving strength through pressure.

We need people who understand Restraint. People who know when something has gone far enough. People who carry the blade of awareness to protect dignity, not to destroy it.

That isn’t philosophy. That is responsibility.

As you open Issue 20, do not read it as content. Read it as a confrontation. Some of you think you are fighting an enemy inside you.

You’re not. You are negotiating with a jailer who is waiting for you to realize that the most honorable thing you can do is walk through the door.

Do not become what prolongs the descent,

The Blade or the Cross

How You Hold Power in a World on Edge

The atmosphere of the present world has a specific weight. It is a low-level, hum of anxiety that sits in the back of the throat: a collective holding of breath. We watch the headlines, the shifting borders, and the hardening of hearts, feeling as though we are passengers on a vessel tilted by a rising storm. We speak of “escalation” as if it is a weather pattern, something that happens to us, rather than something we participate in.

But the storm is not only outside.

If you look closely at the tension in the streets or the rhetoric of nations, you will find it is merely a scaled version of the tension in your own living room, and more importantly, the tension in your own mind. We are living in a rehearsal for conflict.

The way you handle power over yourself in the quiet moment of a personal failure is the exact pattern that, when magnified by millions, dictates how humanity handles power over its enemies.

The Discipline of the Finish

In the deep study of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu, there is an act of profound moral gravity: the Junto. Rooted in Japanese tradition, it represents the sacred duty of the kaishakunin to deliver a decisive strike that preserves the dignity of a warrior’s final act. It is an exercise of ultimate restraint, ensuring that honor is guarded and suffering is stilled with absolute precision.

When a practitioner is at their most vulnerable, having reached the end of their own capacity, the Kaishaku stands to the side. His role is defined by a paradox: he holds the power of death to preserve the dignity of life. The Junto is a strike of absolute precision. It is not an act of aggression, but an act of restraint.

The practitioner of the blade knows that timing is the only true mercy. Strike too early, and you steal the man’s final choice: his moment of internal resolution. Strike too late, and you abandon him to a lingering, unnecessary agony.

This is the internal discipline we are missing. When we fail, when we break a vow, lose our temper, or stumble in our purpose, we rarely use the Junto. We do not know how to end our own suffering cleanly. We do not know how to extract the lesson and then, with a sharp blow of awareness, cut the tie to the shame. We lack the restraint to let the mistake die so the man can live.

The Architecture of the Spectacle

Instead of the blade, we choose the Cross.

Historically and psychologically, crucifixion was never about the end of life; it was about the extension of it. It was a technology of public degradation. It was designed to keep a human being suspended in a state of exposure, turning their pain into a spectacle of control. It was power exercised without a shred of empathy, meant to ensure that the suffering lasted as long as the body could endure.

We do this to ourselves every day.

When you replay an old hurt, when you let a moment of shame linger for years, when you build an identity around your “brokenness”, you are driving the nails. You are turning your internal life into a spectacle for an invisible audience of critics.

This is the same mechanism that drives the current global climate. We see it in the way we “cancel” or “expose” one another. We see it in the way nations refuse to de-escalate, choosing instead to prolong a conflict to ensure the other side is sufficiently humiliated. We have become addicted to the spectacle of the Cross. We confuse the duration of a punishment with its effectiveness.

Most suffering is not created. It is extended.

The Inner Adversary as Jailer

We often feel attacked by our own thoughts, as if there is a war raging inside us. We imagine an “Inner Adversary” that seeks our destruction.

But you must see clearly: You are not being attacked. You are being held in place.

The voice that keeps you on the cross… the one that insists you aren’t ready, aren’t worthy, or haven’t suffered enough yet, is not an external enemy. It is an internalized authority. It is a survival mechanism that learned, long ago, that if it kept you paralyzed by shame, you wouldn’t take the risks that might lead to real danger.

The jailer is not evil; he is terrified. He is using the only tools he has - the nails of self-judgment - to keep you from moving into the unknown. But a world held in place by fear eventually becomes a world that explodes.

The Scale of the Shadow

Wars are not born on battlefields. They are rehearsed in the way we handle conflict within ourselves.

When we cannot resolve our own internal contradictions, we project them onto the “other.” When we are at war with our own shadows, we look for an enemy in the world to justify the tension we feel.

The current global polarization is the collective result of billions of people who have not learned the discipline of the Junto. We escalate because we do not know how to yield. We prolong conflict because we fear that ending it without “victory” is a form of death.

But strength is not dominance. Strength is the ability to absorb a shock without losing your alignment.

Fear does not create war. Unchecked reaction does.

The Real Kata

If you want to change the frequency of the world, you must change the way you hold power over your own soul.

This requires a new kind of practice. It is the ability to sit in the tension of these times without feeding the destruction. It means recognizing when fear is driving your reactions - whether it’s a sharp comment on social media or a spiraling thought about the future - and choosing to breathe instead of strike.

The real kata is not with the sword. It is the moment you decide to stop replaying the shame. It is the moment you refuse to participate in the spectacle of your own degradation.

You do not need to defeat the voice inside you. You simply need to recognize that its tenure has ended. You need to be the Kaishaku for your own past. Strike the tie. End the suffering. Stand up.

The Choice at the Breaking Point

We are all standing at a quiet internal breaking point. The world is asking us who we are when the ground is unstable.

You have the power to be a monument to fear, or a vessel for clarity. You can continue to nail yourself and others to the crosses of past grievances, or you can practice the restraint that allows for a new beginning.

Restoration of the world begins with the restoration of the individual’s agency. You are the only one who can decide when the punishment is enough.

The door isn’t locked. It’s just heavy. And the strength to move it is found in the silence of your own resolve.

Dignity is the refusal to turn a moment of failure into a lifetime of spectacle. Mercy is the highest form of precision.

The Anatomy of the Inner Jailer

It starts as a ripple in the silence. A memory of a failure, a sharp word spoken in haste, or a moment where you stood exposed. It rises, recedes, and then; with a rhythmic, predatory persistence, it returns.

You try to move on, but something within you reaches out and pulls the moment back into the light. It adds weight to the memory. It sharpens the edges. After a while, this doesn’t feel like a mental habit. It feels like a haunting. It feels personal.

But if you look through the lens of the Inner Journal, you will see the mechanics of the cage.

You are not being attacked. You are being held in place.

The Biology of Fear: The Amygdala’s Sentinel

Your brain is not a truth-seeker; it is a survivalist. It is not designed to make you happy or enlightened; it is designed to keep you alive.

At the center of this architecture is the amygdala. This ancient structure does not distinguish between a physical predator and a social rejection. To the amygdala, an embarrassing mistake in front of your peers is a life-threatening event. In our ancestral past, losing the favor of the tribe meant certain death.

When you stumble, the amygdala fires a high-voltage signal: “This matters. Do not forget this.” It flags the event as a permanent threat. It doesn’t care that the meeting is over or that the relationship has ended. It only cares that you never, ever let your guard down again.

The Default Mode: The Architecture of the Loop

Once the threat is flagged, the Default Mode Network (DMN) takes over. This is the part of your brain that activates when you are not focused on a task… when you are “in your head.”

The DMN is a master storyteller. It connects your past failures to your present anxiety. It takes the spark provided by the amygdala and builds a theater around it. It begins the replay. Again. And again.

Each time the “tape” runs, the neural pathway deepens. The emotional charge becomes more visceral. This is how identity is forged, not from the truth of who you are, but from the repetition of who you were afraid to be.

The Evolution of the Adversary

Over time, this loop develops a voice.

“You should have known better.” “You’re not ready.” “They will eventually see the fraud.”

Because this voice is relentless, we give it a name: The Inner Adversary. We imagine a demon living in the basement of our consciousness.

But the truth is more tragic. This voice was originally built for your protection. It learned, through the harsh lessons of your history, that pain follows certain vulnerabilities. So, it created a system of pre-emptive strikes. It punishes you internally so the world can’t surprise you with external pain.

It is not evil. It is outdated.

The brain prefers repetition over resolution because resolution requires uncertainty. Letting go means stepping into a space where the brain hasn’t mapped the dangers yet. For the jailer, the familiarity of your suffering is safer than the unpredictability of your freedom.

The Soul Translation: From Protection to Prolongation

This is the cycle of the unintegrated self:

Event → Emotion → Replay → Identity.

A moment occurs. You feel the sting. Your brain replays it to “learn.” But the repetition doesn’t lead to wisdom; it leads to a heavy, stagnant narrative. This is how protection becomes prolongation. This is how a single bruise becomes a lifelong limp.

In the dojo, we learn that if you hold onto a technique after the opponent has fallen, you have become as rigid as the one you defeated. The same is true internally. The voice that punishes you doesn’t know the moment has passed. It doesn’t know you have already paid the price. It is a sentinel guarding an empty gate.

The Blade of Recognition

You do not need to fight this voice. To fight it is to feed it… to give the loop more oxygen and more energy.

You only need to witness it.

When you recognize the “Adversary” as a primitive security system that has outlived its usefulness, something shifts. You stop obeying the alarm. You recognize that the sirens are loud, but there is no fire.

This is the internal equivalent of the Junto. It is the discipline to end the replay cleanly.

1. Acknowledge: “This happened.”

2. Extract: “This is what I learned.”

3. Execute: “The suffering has no more work to do here.”

The Open Door

You don’t need to defeat your mind. You don’t even need to silence it. You only need to see it for what it is: a survival mechanism, not a source of truth.
