Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle headed to a church service Sunday morning when it was struck in Toledo, according to a statement released by her office.

The statement provides the first official details from Kaptur’s office following the crash, which Toledo Police are investigating as a hit-and-run.

“This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck,” the statement reads.

Her office said Kaptur is “active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries.”

The release also indicates the congresswoman is awaiting the results of the police investigation.

“We look forward to additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident,” the statement says.

Kaptur also thanked the first responders who arrived at the scene.

“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.”

The statement concludes by saying the congresswoman has been overwhelmed by messages of support.

“She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”

Earlier Sunday, Toledo Police confirmed the crash involved a hit-and-run and said two people were transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances of the crash or whether the other driver has been identified.

TOLEDO — U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur was taken to a Toledo-area hospital Sunday morning after being involved in what police are investigating as a hit-and-run crash.

The collision happened at approximately 10:45 a.m. on North Detroit Avenue.

Authorities say two people were transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Officials at the scene confirmed Kaptur was among those taken for evaluation.

What happened in the moments leading up to the crash remains unclear.

For now, the facts are limited.

A member of Congress has been injured. Police are investigating. And the search for answers is underway.

UPDATE: A source within Kaptur’s DC office has told the Independent Defender that the Congresswoman is “going to be alright” following the accident. A doctor connected to her treatment also made a comment to the ID that “it could have been much worse”.

For nearly two weeks, attorney Peter Pattakos has controlled the public narrative surrounding Ashli Ford’s criminal cases in Erie County.

Through affidavits filed with the Supreme Court of Ohio, he alleged improper judicial assignments, questioned interactions between prosecutors and judges, challenged the handling of juror notebooks and argued that the cumulative effect of those events created an appearance of impropriety requiring the removal of Erie County Common Pleas judges from Ford’s cases.

On Thursday, the State of Ohio finally answered.

Not with a blanket denial.

Not with a short memorandum dismissing the allegations.

Instead, prosecutors filed a seventeen-page response supported by sworn affidavits from Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly and law student intern Isabella Ray. Together, those filings attempt to answer nearly every significant allegation Pattakos has raised while asking the Supreme Court to deny both affidavits of disqualification.

The filing represents the first comprehensive public response from the prosecution.

Whether it represents the final answer is a different question.

An extraordinary remedy

Before addressing surveillance footage, juror notebooks or courtroom interactions, the State begins by challenging the legal vehicle Pattakos chose.

The response reminds the Supreme Court that “the statutory right to seek disqualification of a judge is an extraordinary remedy,” arguing that judges are presumed to follow the law and that allegations of bias “must be compelling to overcome these presumptions.”

Prosecutors further contend that “an affidavit of disqualification is not the mechanism for determining whether a judge has complied with the law,” arguing that many of Pattakos’ complaints concern issues more appropriately addressed on appeal than through judicial disqualification.

In other words, the State is asking the Chief Justice to view this case through a much narrower lens than Pattakos has presented.

That legal argument frames the remainder of the response.

The hallway video

No allegation has generated more public attention than surveillance footage showing Chief Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly placing her hand on Judge Beverly McGookey’s back before accompanying her toward chambers during Ashli Ford’s forgery trial.

The cameras recorded the interaction.

They did not record the conversation.

The State now offers, for the first time, a sworn explanation.

According to Prosecutor Kevin Baxter, the discussion involved “a potential serious medical condition, over which Judge McGookey was extremely worried at the time.” Baxter states the court recessed so the judge could attend a medical appointment and maintains the conversation had nothing to do with the pending criminal case.

Lilly’s affidavit provides additional detail.

She acknowledges placing her arm around the judge and states McGookey told her she was awaiting medical test results that “could have potentially indicated a serious medical condition.” Lilly writes that the judge “began to cry,” prompting her to accompany McGookey toward chambers while assuring the judge that “my thoughts and prayers were with her.” According to Lilly, Judge McGookey advised her the following day that the testing revealed no serious illness.

The State plainly believes that explanation resolves the concerns raised by Pattakos.

Whether it does is precisely why this matter is before the Supreme Court.

There is one personal observation worth mentioning.

During Ashli Ford’s forgery trial, the same trial involved in these allegations, Judge McGookey stepped off the bench and apologized to me for the conduct of another reporter in her courtroom. It was a brief interaction and doesn’t prove anything one way or the other. I have also observed the judge to share personal anecdotes with courtroom observers during court breaks. I mention it only because it makes the State’s explanation seem plausible to me.

But plausible is not the same as proven.

The surveillance video contains no audio. Those of us outside that hallway cannot independently verify what was discussed. As an independent observer, the interaction does seem concerning.

Pattakos’ argument has consistently centered on the appearance created by the interaction. The State has now supplied an explanation for what prosecutors contend actually occurred. Whether that explanation dispels the appearance of impropriety, or simply offers an alternative interpretation of the events, is now a question for the Chief Justice.

The juror notebooks

The State also attempts to answer one of Pattakos’ most persistent allegations involving juror notebooks entering Judge McGookey’s chambers.

Rather than disputing the surveillance footage itself, prosecutors contend Pattakos has misunderstood what it depicts.

According to the response, an audio system malfunction forced the Ford trial into Judge Roger Binette’s courtroom. Because Judge Binette continued using that courtroom for his own docket, his staff requested that McGookey’s staff “remove the Ford trial materials from the courtroom and jury room on a daily basis.” Prosecutors argue that “this is what is depicted” in the surveillance footage relied upon by Pattakos.

The explanation is straightforward.

The notebooks, according to the State, were moved because the courtroom was being shared, not because anyone intended to review or tamper with juror materials.

That explanation answers one important question.

It does not necessarily answer every question raised by Pattakos.

The response explains why the notebooks were moved. It says comparatively little about where they were secured overnight, who maintained custody of them after court adjourned, whether access to those materials was restricted or why the notebooks were later reported as “presumed destroyed.”

Those omissions do not establish wrongdoing.

They do suggest that, at least for now, not every question raised by the affidavits has been fully addressed.

Juror No. 12

The State is considerably less restrained when addressing Pattakos’ allegations surrounding the removal of Juror No. 12.

Prosecutors characterize portions of those allegations as “demonstrably false” and support their position with affidavits from both Baxter and Isabella Ray.

Baxter states courtroom video confirms the juror repeatedly slept during trial.

In one passage, he contends that the juror was asleep for over two minutes.

Ray similarly states she independently observed the juror asleep on multiple occasions before bringing the issue to prosecutors’ attention.

According to the response, the juror’s removal reflected ordinary judicial discretion rather than evidence of bias or jury manipulation.

Throughout this section of the filing, prosecutors repeatedly argue Pattakos asks the Court to infer misconduct from routine courtroom events while overlooking evidence that contradicts his conclusions.

Again, that is now one sworn narrative among several before the Supreme Court.

A different version of events

Before these affidavits were filed, the public had surveillance photographs, courtroom observations and Pattakos’ interpretation of those events.

Today, the public also has sworn explanations from the people accused of acting improperly.

Some readers may find those explanations persuasive.

Others may conclude they leave important questions unanswered.

The Supreme Court will ultimately determine their legal significance.

For journalists, however, the filing marks an important turning point.

The public record no longer contains allegations alone.

It now contains competing sworn narratives.

Judge Beverly McGookey has also filed a response in the intimidation case, while indicating she intends to address the more serious allegations involving the forgery trial in a separate affidavit. Administrative Judge Tygh Tone has not yet filed his response.

When those filings are complete, The Independent Defender will examine the allegations, the responses and the legal standards together.

For now, Thursday’s filing represents exactly what the Supreme Court ordered.

The State has answered.

The courthouse has finally started talking.

Good.

It should.

Because silence was never going to survive this one.

The State would have the public believe these were ordinary courthouse moments that only appeared extraordinary after Peter Pattakos stitched them together into a narrative.

Maybe.

But extraordinary stories have a funny habit of beginning with ordinary moments that nobody feels compelled to explain—until someone starts asking uncomfortable questions.

That’s what keeps nagging at me.

Not that explanations exist.

That so many of them arrived only after the Supreme Court ordered a response.

Maybe every answer in those seventeen pages is exactly right.

Maybe every hallway conversation was innocent.

Maybe every notebook was moved for perfectly routine reasons.

Maybe.

I genuinely hope so.

The integrity of our courts matters too much to hope otherwise.

But hope isn’t evidence.

Neither are affidavits.

Affidavits are evidence of what someone says happened. They are sworn statements, and they deserve to be taken seriously. But they are not immune from scrutiny simply because they are signed under oath. They are part of the record—not the end of the inquiry.

That is where I part company with the State.

Not because I know Peter Pattakos is right.

I don’t.

Not because I know Kevin Baxter or Paulette Lilly are wrong.

I don’t know that either.

I part company with the idea that seventeen pages of explanations should automatically close the file.

Journalists don’t exist to decide which side wrote the better affidavit.

We exist to keep reading after everyone else stops.

To ask the next question.

To notice what was answered and what wasn’t.

To separate explanation from resolution.

The State has now told us what it says happened.

The Supreme Court will decide whether those explanations satisfy the law.

The public will decide whether they satisfy common sense.

As for me?

I’m keeping my ears, eyes and mind open.

Because if there’s one lesson I’ve learned in this bizarro carnival it’s this:

The first explanation is rarely the last chapter.

And this story still has chapters left to write.

When attorney Peter Pattakos asked the Supreme Court of Ohio to disqualify Erie County Common Pleas Judges Beverly McGookey, Tygh Tone and Roger Binette from Ashli Ford’s pending intimidation case, he did not simply ask for new judges.

He asked Ohio’s highest court to examine whether public confidence in Erie County’s judicial system had been compromised.

The Supreme Court’s response was equally direct.

Rather than immediately ruling on Pattakos’ request, the Court ordered each judge to file a written response. More importantly, it instructed them that those responses were to “specifically and fully address, in detail, each factual allegation in the affidavit of disqualification.“

Two of those responses have now been filed.

Judge Beverly McGookey submitted a five-page affidavit recounting her three decades on the bench, explaining why she believes she should not preside over Ford’s intimidation case, and promising a future response to Pattakos’ allegations concerning the forgery trial.

Judge Roger Binette filed a two-page response explaining that most of Pattakos’ allegations concern other judges, that he lacks the factual basis to answer them, and that for independent reasons he does not believe he should preside over the case.

Administrative Judge Tygh Tone has not yet responded.

McGOOKEY BEGINS WITH HER RECORD

Judge McGookey does not begin her affidavit with Ashli Ford.

She begins with herself.

She tells the Supreme Court she has been licensed to practice law since November 1980. She recounts being elected Erie County Probate Judge in 1996 and again in 2002 before being elected to the newly combined General Division in 2008, 2014 and 2020.

She notes she is completing the final year of her fifth six-year term and writes that she has “not had an opponent in any election since 1996.”

The affidavit then turns to a story from nearly thirty years ago.

McGookey explains that shortly after taking office, then-Chief Justice Thomas Moyer contacted her and asked whether she would help address a backlog of cases in Erie County’s General Division.

“Without hesitation and without any obligation to do so,” she writes, she agreed.

The result, according to McGookey, was that she became responsible for approximately one-third of Erie County’s criminal docket.

“Thus, I have been handling one-third of the court’s criminal docket for most of my thirty years on the bench.”

She next explains how criminal cases are ordinarily assigned in Erie County, writing that they are randomly assigned by the Clerk of Courts unless an exception applies. She outlines circumstances involving reciprocal assignments and conflicts before arriving at a point that becomes central to her affidavit.

“In my thirty years on the bench,” McGookey writes, “there have been occasions where I have recused myself without issue if I recognized a conflict or potential conflict of interest and/or to avoid even any appearance of impropriety.”

She adds that attorneys have, on occasion, approached her “as a matter of professional courtesy” to alert her to potential conflicts before filing formal motions.

“Upon receipt of such information,” she writes, “I have promptly and willingly recused myself a number of times without issue.”

Then comes a sentence that sets the tone for the remainder of her affidavit.

“Unfortunately, I was not offered that same professional courtesy in this case.”

“I NEVER SOUGHT THE ASSIGNMENT.”

McGookey next turns to the question now before the Supreme Court—how Ashli Ford’s intimidation case came to be assigned to her courtroom.

She writes that while she was out of state during the second week of July, Administrative Judge Tygh Tone assigned Case No. 2024-CR-0091 to her by judgment entry filed July 7.

“I did not become aware of this assignment until I read of it in attorney Peter Pattakos’s social media posts,” she writes, adding those posts “had spread through the media like wildfire.”

She further states that she also learned through those posts that Pattakos had filed an affidavit seeking her disqualification.

McGookey tells the Supreme Court she “neither sought the assignment or reassignment of this case to myself nor have I ever even discussed this matter with Judge Tone” after returning to Ohio.

Concerned about the assignment, she says she contacted the Supreme Court’s Judicial Assignment Analyst, Dahria Beaver, to determine whether visiting Judge Deborah Boros remained assigned to the case, whether a rescission order existed and how the assignment process operated under Supreme Court guidelines.

According to McGookey, she was told Judge Boros’ assignment remained in “granted status,” no certificate of rescission had been filed and she was referred to the assignment guidelines for additional answers.

That conversation led McGookey to an unexpected conclusion.

“Based upon that information,” she writes, “at this point I am not certain whether I am actually properly ‘assigned’ to this (’Intimidation’) case or not.”

She continues:

“It appears to me I may not be.”

If Judge Tone’s assignment order is ultimately deemed void, McGookey writes she is “not sure there is any case...to ‘disqualify’ me from.”

“I...RESPECTFULLY SEEK RECUSAL.”

Paragraph 14 marks the turning point of McGookey’s affidavit.

“Alternatively,” she writes, “had I been contacted by Mr. Pattakos, out of professional courtesy, concerning this issue of this appointment, I would have taken the position, and hereby do take the position that I don’t believe it would be appropriate for me to hear any proceedings in the ‘Intimidation’ case.”

Her conclusion follows immediately.

“I, therefore, hereby respectfully seek recusal of myself from the same.”

McGookey then explains why.

She notes that Judge Tone was identified as a victim in one count of the indictment and, to the best of her knowledge, testified during trial. She observes that although Ford was not convicted on the count involving Tone, she was convicted of other counts arising from the same indictment, which are now pending before the Sixth District Court of Appeals.

Should those convictions be reversed and a new trial ordered, McGookey writes, Judge Tone “could potentially be called as a witness again.”

She also notes that “to the best of my knowledge, there is no immediate issue currently pending which needs to be ruled upon in this case.”

Taken together, she concludes those circumstances warrant her recusal from the intimidation case.

THE ALLEGATIONS RESERVED FOR ANOTHER DAY

McGookey does not end her affidavit with recusal.

Instead, she turns directly toward Pattakos’ allegations.

“With all of that being said,” she writes, “I do take strong issue with many of the statements of so-called ‘facts’ contained in the Pattakos Affidavit.”

She continues:

“I also vehemently deny and take offense at any suggestion that the Court and staff colluded/conspired with the prosecution, law enforcement, or any other entity to obtain a conviction against Ashli Ford in the jury trial.”

But rather than answering those allegations within this affidavit, McGookey tells the Supreme Court they will be addressed elsewhere.

“It is my intention to address those salacious allegations in my response to Mr. Pattakos’s Affidavit of Disqualification in that case (26AD176).”

She concludes by noting that, according to information she received from the Clerk of the Ohio Supreme Court, “until the current case, there has never been an Affidavit of Disqualification filed against me by any criminal defendant in my thirty years in office.”

BINETTE’S RESPONSE TAKES A DIFFERENT PATH

Judge Roger Binette’s response is considerably shorter.

It is also considerably narrower.

Unlike McGookey, Binette does not recount his judicial career or explain Erie County’s assignment process.

Instead, he begins with the Supreme Court’s order directing the judges to “specifically and fully address, in detail, each factual allegation.”

He then explains why his response is necessarily limited.

“In having to respond specifically and fully address, in detail, each factual allegation in the affidavit,” Binette writes, “there is not much the undersigned Judge can state due to the lack thereof regarding the undersigned Judge.”

He points out that Pattakos’ affidavit contains “only a generalized concern/allegation” against him.

He quotes three passages from Pattakos’ filing referencing his name before making what may be the central observation in his affidavit.

“The balance of the Affidavit concerns the actions of the other 2 mentioned Judges (Judges McGookey and Tone).”

Then comes his explanation.

“The undersigned Judge is not necessarily aware of those allegations, and therefore cannot comment on them with any factual support.”

Unlike McGookey, Binette does not attempt to answer allegations involving juror notebooks, surveillance photographs or communications attributed to other judges.

He simply states they concern others and that he lacks factual knowledge to address them.

“I HAVE NO OPPOSITION”

Binette then turns to the issue directly involving him.

“With that said,” he writes, “the undersigned Judge would state that he has no opposition with not presiding over this case.”

He explains the case was originally assigned to his docket when filed in 2024, but he requested reassignment because “one of the alleged victims was a sitting Judge in this division (i.e. Judge Tone).”

The matter was subsequently reassigned to visiting Judge Deborah Boros.

Binette then explains that even if Judge Tone had not been an alleged victim, he still would have sought reassignment.

He writes that he “was a friend with the Defendant’s family member in years past (prior to his death),” attended the same church with members of Ford’s family and “heard others discuss the case while present.”

For those reasons, Binette reaches a conclusion similar to McGookey’s.

“Therefore, the undersigned Judge would not believe he should preside over the case.”

He ends his affidavit with a direct request to the Supreme Court.

“Moreover, would request this Honorable Court to not appoint the undersigned Judge to preside over the case.”

ONE RESPONSE REMAINS

Administrative Judge Tygh Tone has not yet filed his response.

That filing may ultimately prove to be the most significant of the three.

Unlike Binette, whose affidavit focuses almost entirely on why he believes he should not hear the case, and unlike McGookey, who reserves her substantive response to Pattakos’ allegations for another proceeding, many of the factual allegations contained in Pattakos’ affidavit concern administrative decisions attributed directly to Judge Tone.

For now, the Supreme Court has before it Pattakos’ affidavit, two judicial responses, and a record that continues to evolve. With both McGookey and Binette agreeing with Pattakos’ contention that they should be recused, and barring a surprising answer from Tone, it appears that if Ford is retried on the intimidation charges, the county will once again see a visiting judge.

Courthouses are strange places.

They are the only buildings in America where ordinary citizens are expected to surrender nearly everything to strangers wearing black robes. Their liberty. Their property. Sometimes their children. Sometimes decades of their lives.

We accept that extraordinary power because we believe the process is bigger than the people entrusted to carry it out.

That belief is sacred.

Which is why allegations like these cannot simply be filed away and forgotten.

If an attorney stands before the Supreme Court of Ohio and alleges jury tampering, missing juror notebooks, improper judicial conduct and collusion between court personnel and prosecutors, there are only two acceptable outcomes.

Either those allegations are dismantled in the daylight...

...or they are proven.

There is no honorable third option where everyone simply grows tired of asking questions.

Transparency is not a public relations strategy; it is the price government pays for the authority it exercises over a free people.

The Supreme Court understood that when it ordered these judges to answer.

Now the public should expect nothing less.

I have no interest in serving as Peter Pattakos’ spokesman.

I have no interest in serving as the Erie County Courthouse’s public relations office.

My only obligation is to the record.

That is why I read the filings before I write about them. When I don’t understand something, I ask people who do. Then I go back to the record.

That should not be remarkable.

It should be the minimum standard.

I’ll keep reading every filing.

Every affidavit.

Every order.

Not because I know how this story ends.

But because allegations this serious deserve more than assumptions.

They deserve scrutiny.

They deserve transparency.

And they deserve answers.

Because justice should never fear the light.

Only those who abuse it do.

I spent part of Wednesday afternoon staring at a photograph.

That is not usually how investigations work. I prefer documents. Documents have dates, signatures, case numbers and numbered paragraphs. They can be enlarged, searched, compared and placed beside other documents until a pattern begins to emerge.

Photographs are more dangerous.

They capture a fraction of a second without explaining what happened before the shutter closed or what happened after it opened again. They can preserve truth, distort context or do both at once.

The photograph in question isn’t dramatic. There are no police cruisers, handcuffs or deputies. There isn’t a secret envelope changing hands. It depicts Erie County Common Pleas Judge Beverly McGookey walking into her chambers beside Erie County Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly after proceedings in a criminal case her office is prosecuting.

Lilly’s hand appears to be resting against the judge’s back.

That is all the photograph proves.

It does not establish what either woman was thinking. It does not reveal what they were discussing. It does not prove friendship, favoritism, conspiracy or corruption. It certainly does not prove that anyone attempted to “throw” a case.

But the law does not wait for corruption to be proven before it begins caring about how justice appears to the people forced to trust it.

That is the point many readers missed after Tuesday’s story.

“Why do we care?”

It is a fair question.

Judges know prosecutors. Prosecutors know judges. In a county courthouse, the same attorneys may appear before the same judges for years. They attend bar functions, funerals, retirement parties and community events. They pass one another in hallways. They may have worked together before one of them took the bench.

Friendship, by itself, is not forbidden.

A hand on someone’s back is not listed anywhere in the Ohio Revised Code as a criminal offense. It is not automatically a violation of the Ohio Code of Judicial Conduct. It is not evidence, standing alone, that a judge has surrendered her independence or that a prosecutor has obtained special treatment.

Ohio’s own disqualification decisions make that clear. The Supreme Court of Ohio has repeatedly held that the mere existence of a friendship between a judge and an attorney does not automatically require the judge’s removal. The court instead examines the nature of the relationship, its closeness, its duration and the surrounding circumstances.

But surrounding circumstances are precisely what Erie County now has.

The photograph did not appear during an ordinary week in an ordinary prosecution. It appeared while the Supreme Court of Ohio is considering allegations that strike directly at the independence of the jury and the impartiality of the local bench.

It appeared after a seventy-one-page filing accused Erie County judges and prosecutors of jury tampering.

It appeared after Juror Number 12, Joseph Simoneau, signed an affidavit stating that he took approximately twenty-six pages of notes identifying evidence he believed created reasonable doubt, was removed on the final morning of trial without being questioned and never saw his notebook again.

It appeared after surveillance recordings reviewed by The Independent Defender appeared to show juror notebooks being carried into and out of Judge McGookey’s chambers.

It appeared after video appeared to show members of the prosecution team remaining with the judge after proceedings concluded and the defense departed.

It appeared after Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly was recorded entering the judge’s chambers and remaining there for several minutes, according to the filing and video reviewed by The Independent Defender.

It appeared after a second juror, Lisa Hall, stated under oath that Kevin Baxter addressed the deadlocked jury after the mistrial and made a statement she understood to mean that the jurors had gotten the case wrong.

It appeared after Hall said Judge McGookey entered the jury room and asked what “we” could have done to bring the case to a verdict.

And it appeared while attorney Peter Pattakos is asking the Supreme Court of Ohio to disqualify Erie County judges from presiding over proceedings involving Ashli Ford.

That context does not transform the photograph into proof.

It does transform it into a legitimate subject of public concern.

Because the issue is no longer simply whether a prosecutor touched a judge’s back.

The issue is whether the public can look at the totality of what has been alleged, documented and photographed and still maintain confidence that the judge and the prosecution occupy entirely separate sides of the courtroom.

Buried inside that question is the reason judicial ethics rules exist at all.

THE RULE

Rule 1.2 of the Ohio Code of Judicial Conduct requires judges to act in a manner that promotes public confidence in the judiciary’s “independence, integrity, and impartiality.” It also commands judges to avoid both impropriety and the appearance of impropriety.

Those last five words are doing an enormous amount of work.

The rule does not say judges must merely avoid taking bribes, fixing cases or secretly helping one side. Those things are already forbidden.

It says judges must avoid creating an appearance that would cause reasonable members of the public to question whether the court remains independent.

That is because the American legal system rests on a peculiar arrangement.

Judges possess extraordinary power. They can imprison people, terminate parental rights, issue injunctions, impose financial judgments and decide which evidence a jury will be permitted to hear. Yet judges generally do not command armies or personally enforce their orders.

Their authority depends upon acceptance.

Citizens obey court orders because they accept the legitimacy of the institution issuing them. Defendants stand when a judge enters because the robe represents something larger than the person wearing it. Jurors follow instructions because they are told the court is neutral. Prosecutors exercise the power of the state while judges are expected to restrain that power when the law requires it.

The system functions only as long as people believe those roles remain separate.

That is why the appearance rule is not cosmetic.

It is structural.

The commentary accompanying Ohio’s judicial rules explains that public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by improper conduct and by conduct that merely appears improper. Whether an appearance exists is evaluated from the perspective of reasonable minds aware of the relevant facts.

Not the judge’s perspective.

Not the prosecutor’s perspective.

Not the perspective of courthouse insiders who have known one another for twenty years and consider a familiar gesture meaningless.

The public’s perspective.

That distinction is essential because insiders often normalize conduct that outsiders find astonishing.

Courthouse employees understand which doors prosecutors commonly use, where judges park, which attorneys are longtime friends and who attends the same Christmas parties. The public does not have that institutional history.

The public sees a criminal defendant standing alone against the State of Ohio.

It sees the prosecutor asking a jury to convict her.

It sees the judge ruling on objections, deciding what evidence reaches that jury and determining whether the prosecution has followed the rules.

Then it sees an assistant prosecutor assigned to the case leaving the courthouse beside the judge overseeing it, with the assistant prosecutor’s hand against the judge’s back.

The photograph may have an innocent explanation.

But Rule 1.2 exists because innocent explanations do not automatically erase reasonable appearances.

THE OBJECTIVE OBSERVER

Ohio’s disqualification decisions use a formulation that appears again and again: A judge should step aside or be removed when a “reasonable and objective observer” would harbor serious doubts about the judge’s impartiality.

The standard is objective.

A judge may sincerely believe she is impartial. A prosecutor may sincerely believe their relationship has never influenced a ruling. Both may be completely correct.

That is not necessarily the end of the inquiry.

The question is what an informed outside observer could reasonably conclude after considering the relevant circumstances.

Ohio also begins disqualification proceedings with a presumption that judges are impartial. The person requesting removal must overcome that presumption with specific facts rather than speculation, dissatisfaction or adverse rulings.

That matters here.

A photograph alone would probably not overcome that presumption. Nor would the bare assertion that a prosecutor and judge appeared friendly.

But Pattakos is not asking Ohio’s highest court to consider a photograph alone.

He has submitted sworn juror statements, courthouse surveillance material, allegations concerning the handling of juror notebooks, the timing of Simoneau’s removal and claimed communications involving the prosecution and the court.

The photograph becomes one additional fact inside a much larger factual claim.

Courts routinely distinguish between isolated circumstances and the cumulative effect of several circumstances. A relationship that does not require recusal standing alone may look different when combined with disputed communications, contested courtroom conduct or other facts raising questions about impartiality.

That does not mean Lilly’s gesture establishes a close friendship.

It means context cannot be legally amputated from the image.

THE HALLWAY AND THE HUDDLE

The photograph is also not the only interaction drawing scrutiny.

Pattakos’ filing alleges that Baxter and Lilly remained in the courtroom with Judge McGookey after proceedings concluded and the defense team left. Surveillance footage cited in the filing appears to show Baxter gesturing toward the jury box. The filing further alleges that discussions continued at the bench and outside the courtroom.

The Independent Defender reviewed the video referenced in the filing and observed conduct appearing consistent with Pattakos’ description.

The recordings do not contain accessible audio establishing what was said.

That limitation is crucial.

A conversation between a judge and prosecutor is not automatically improper. Courts must conduct business. Scheduling questions arise. Exhibits must be handled. Attorneys sometimes need clarification concerning the next day’s proceedings.

Ohio’s rules recognize those practical realities.

Rule 2.9 generally prohibits a judge from initiating, receiving, permitting or considering an ex parte communication concerning a pending or impending matter. But it allows limited communications for scheduling, administrative or emergency purposes when the discussion does not address substantive matters or the merits and when the judge reasonably believes no party will receive a procedural, substantive or tactical advantage.

That exception is narrow for a reason.

A conversation about what time court will begin is one thing.

A conversation about a juror, the strength of evidence, a disputed exhibit, the defense strategy, anticipated rulings or how the court should address a developing problem is something else entirely.

The public cannot determine which category applies by watching silent surveillance footage.

That uncertainty does not prove an ethics violation.

It does create a question that cannot be responsibly dismissed with “judges and prosecutors talk all the time.”

Yes, they do.

The law still regulates when, why and about what.

THE PROSECUTOR’S RULES

The ethical obligation does not rest entirely on the judge.

Ohio lawyers are also prohibited from communicating ex parte with judges during a proceeding unless the communication is authorized by law, court order or applicable rules.

The commentary to Ohio Rule of Professional Conduct 3.5 specifically identifies judges, magistrates and jurors as persons serving in an official capacity with whom unauthorized ex parte communications are prohibited.

That rule applies to prosecutors.

Prosecutors carry additional constitutional and ethical responsibilities because they do not represent an ordinary client. They wield the coercive authority of the state.

Nothing in the available photograph establishes that Lilly violated Rule 3.5.

Nothing in silent surveillance video establishes the substance of any discussion involving Lilly, Baxter or Judge McGookey.

But the rules explain why defense counsel, the Supreme Court of Ohio and the public are entitled to ask what was discussed and why members of the prosecution team appeared to enjoy access to the judge after the defense had departed.

The answer matters because one side in a criminal case can never appear to possess private access to the person responsible for policing the rules.

WHAT OHIO HAS DONE WITH EX PARTE CONDUCT

Ohio courts do not treat ex parte communication as a harmless matter of etiquette.

The Supreme Court of Ohio has repeatedly explained that ex parte communications strike at the heart of public confidence in the judiciary. The appearance of impropriety created by judicial conduct may itself support a Rule 1.2 violation.

These cases do not establish that the Erie County interactions violated the rules.

They establish that the rules are real.

They are enforced.

And they are not reduced to technical trivia merely because no one can immediately prove that a particular communication changed the outcome of a case.

The integrity of the process is itself protected.

That is the answer to “why do we care?”

We care because the justice system cannot tolerate hidden channels between one side and the decision-maker.

We care because a defendant cannot challenge information she never learns was provided.

We care because appellate courts cannot review a conversation that was never placed on the record.

We care because juries cannot remain independent if courthouse officials learn how individual jurors are evaluating the evidence before deliberations begin.

We care because silence, secrecy and familiarity become dangerous when they occupy the same room.

FRIENDSHIP IS NOT THE OFFENSE

There is a danger in going too far.

The law does not require judges to live as hermits.

Ohio has explicitly rejected a rule under which every friendship between a judge and lawyer creates automatic disqualification.

That principle prevents disqualification procedure from becoming a weapon.

A criminal defendant cannot remove a judge merely by pointing out that the judge once worked with the prosecutor, attended the same bar dinner or exchanged pleasantries in a courthouse hallway.

Adverse rulings are not enough either.

The Supreme Court of Ohio’s guidance states that an affidavit of disqualification must contain specific sworn facts showing bias, prejudice, interest or another disqualifying circumstance.

That is precisely why the seventy-one-page filing matters.

Pattakos did not submit a photograph with the caption, “They look friendly.”

He submitted affidavits, videos and a detailed account of events that he claims demonstrate intentional jury tampering and an intolerable appearance of impropriety.

The photograph does not replace that evidence.

It joins it.

Whether it changes anything is now for the Supreme Court of Ohio to determine.

RECUSAL AND DISQUALIFICATION

The words “recusal” and “disqualification” are often used interchangeably, but Ohio’s procedure deserves explanation.

A judge may voluntarily recuse herself when she believes her impartiality could reasonably be questioned.

When a party seeks to force the removal of an Ohio common pleas judge, the formal mechanism is an affidavit of disqualification under Ohio Revised Code 2701.03.

This is not an appeal.

It is not a disciplinary prosecution.

And it does not decide whether a defendant is guilty or whether a prosecutor committed a crime.

It asks whether a particular judge may continue to preside.

The Supreme Court’s own guidance emphasizes that these affidavits must contain specific sworn facts. They cannot be based solely on anger, suspicion or unfavorable rulings.

The standard therefore protects both sides of the institution.

It protects litigants from judges whose impartiality may reasonably be questioned.

It also protects judges from strategic, unsupported accusations designed to disrupt proceedings.

In Ford’s case, Pattakos has attempted something extraordinary: the disqualification of Erie County’s General Division judges from matters involving his client.

That request is broader than asking one judge to step aside from one hearing.

It presents a claim that local circumstances have compromised confidence in the bench as an institution.

The Supreme Court may reject that claim.

It may find the allegations unsupported, insufficient or legally unrelated to the judges whom Pattakos seeks to remove.

But the filing’s existence is not meaningless.

An Ohio attorney has placed his name and professional reputation beneath an accusation of jury tampering and asked the state’s highest court to intervene.

The court now has jurisdiction over the disqualification question.

And the people whose courthouse is at issue have a legitimate interest in understanding the rules governing that decision.

THE CONSTITUTIONAL FLOOR

Most recusal disputes are resolved under statutes and ethical codes. But in extreme cases, judicial impartiality becomes a matter of constitutional due process.

The United States Supreme Court has long held that a fair trial before a fair tribunal is a basic requirement of due process.

In In re Murchison, the Court wrote that the legal system has always attempted to prevent even the probability of unfairness.

The point was not simply that actual bias had been proven inside the judge’s mind.

The Court recognized that some arrangements create a risk too serious for the Constitution to tolerate.

That reasoning later appeared in Caperton v. A.T. Massey Coal Co., where the Supreme Court held that due process required recusal under extraordinary circumstances.

Caperton was an extreme case.

A prosecutor’s hand on a judge’s back does not make this Caperton.

A courthouse conversation does not automatically become Murchison.

But those decisions matter because they establish the constitutional principle beneath the ethical rules: some risks to impartiality are unacceptable even when no one can produce direct evidence of a judge consciously deciding to favor one side.

THE REFEREE

People often compare judges to referees.

It is an imperfect comparison, but it explains the anxiety surrounding the photograph better than pages of legal terminology.

A referee may know the players.

A referee may like some of them.

A referee may have worked with them in another league.

None of that necessarily means the referee will call the game unfairly.

But when the game ends, the referee should not leave the field looking like a member of one team’s coaching staff.

The concern becomes sharper when the same game is already under review for allegations that officials removed a player at a critical moment, examined materials they were not supposed to see and held conversations outside the other team’s presence.

The photograph is not the scandal.

The photograph is the illustration.

It visually condenses the question running through seventy-one pages of legal filings:

Where did the prosecution end and the court begin?

Perhaps the answer is clear.

Perhaps the relationships were entirely professional, every disputed conversation was administrative and nobody viewed Simoneau’s notes.

Perhaps Juror Number 12 was removed for the precise reason stated by the court and the timing was unfortunate but innocent.

Perhaps Lilly’s gesture was merely a moment of ordinary human courtesy—a hand extended to guide someone through a doorway or down a step.

All of those explanations are possible.

But transparency is what separates an innocent explanation from an institutional demand that the public simply stop asking.

The correct response to a reasonable question is not contempt for the person asking it.

It is an answer.

CODA: THE SPACE BETWEEN THEM

Courthouses are built around distances.

There is a distance between the gallery and the well of the courtroom.

A distance between the lawyers and the jury.

A distance between the witness stand and the bench.

A distance between the prosecution table and the defense table.

Those spaces are not decorative.

They represent roles.

The prosecutor accuses.

The defense challenges.

The jury decides facts.

The judge enforces the rules and protects the fairness of the proceeding.

Every person has a place.

Every person has a duty.

And the public is asked to believe that the distance between them remains intact even when everyone leaves the courtroom.

That is why one photograph matters.

Not because a hand on someone’s back proves a conspiracy.

It does not.

Not because judges and prosecutors are forbidden from knowing one another.

They are not.

It matters because this photograph arrived after the notebooks.

After the surveillance footage.

After the courtroom cleared.

After the prosecution remained behind.

After the juror affidavits.

After a deadlocked jury.

After a filing accused judges and prosecutors of interfering with the institution that stands between the government and the accused.

One photograph cannot answer those allegations.

But it can sharpen them.

It can make seventy-one pages of legal filings suddenly understandable to someone who has never read a judicial-conduct rule in his life.

The referee is not supposed to wear a jersey beneath the robe.

And the public should never be forced to squint at a photograph to determine whether she does.

Yesterday, the question was whether Erie County removed a juror because he doubted the state’s case.

Today, the question is why an assistant prosecutor assigned to the case and the sitting judge overseeing it would permit themselves to be photographed in a posture that could make reasonable people wonder whether the distance between them had disappeared.

Neither question has been adjudicated.

Neither question should be answered by assumption.

But both deserve answers.

Because justice is not a private conversation between lawyers who have known one another for years.

It belongs to the defendant.

It belongs to the jurors.

It belongs to the people sitting in the gallery.

It belongs to everyone who may someday stand inside that courthouse and ask the government to prove its case before an independent judge.

That is why we care.

Not because the photograph proves anything.

Because the rules were written so the public would never have to wonder.

I spent part of Tuesday afternoon reviewing seventy-one pages of filings, affidavits, exhibits, and surveillance photographs submitted to the Supreme Court of Ohio.

By the time I reached the final page, I realized this was no longer a story about Ashli Ford.

Attorney Peter Pattakos has accused Erie County judges and prosecutors of jury tampering in a filing before the Supreme Court of Ohio.

The filing includes two juror affidavits, allegations involving courthouse surveillance video, and claims that a juror who took twenty-six pages of notes favorable to the defense was removed on the final day of trial.

If proven true, the allegations would represent one of the most significant judicial scandals in Erie County’s history.

That is not hyperbole.

There are accusations in the legal profession that attorneys make every day. Judges are accused of being unfair. Prosecutors are accused of being overly aggressive. Defense attorneys are accused of grandstanding.

But there are certain words that carry an entirely different weight.

“Jury tampering” is one of them.

It is an allegation that strikes at the very foundation of the American justice system. It is an accusation that someone attempted to interfere with the independent judgment of the citizens charged with deciding guilt or innocence.

And Peter Pattakos, a practicing Ohio attorney with nearly two decades of experience, has now signed his name beneath those words and delivered them to Ohio’s highest court.

If he is wrong, he has accused sitting judges and prosecutors of one of the gravest offenses imaginable inside a courtroom.

If he is right, Erie County may be facing a crisis of confidence unlike anything it has seen in generations.

Because buried inside those seventy-one pages is a question that now hangs over the Erie County Courthouse:

JUROR NUMBER 12

His name is Joseph Simoneau.

For three days, he sat in the jury box during the State of Ohio’s forgery case against Ashli Ford.

According to his affidavit, he listened carefully, took detailed notes, and paid close attention to the evidence.

A lot of notes.

Twenty-six pages worth.

“I had taken approximately 26 pages of notes on the notepads that were provided to us jurors by the Court.”

“These notes included my impressions of the various pieces of evidence that, in my opinion, went toward creating reasonable doubt on the charges against the Defendant, Ms. Ashli Ford.”

According to Simoneau, those notes documented concerns about inconsistent statements from witnesses, perceived shortcomings in the investigation, and the absence of evidence that anyone had suffered harm as a result of the alleged forgery.

Other jurors noticed.

“Some of my fellow jurors had noticed that I was taking copious notes of the proceedings, and even remarked, while we were in the jury room, that my notes would be helpful to them in our deliberations.”

Then, on the morning of May 22, just before closing arguments, Simoneau’s service came to an end.

“I was surprised and disappointed when, after my fellow jurors and I were called into the courtroom that morning, the presiding Judge, Beverly McGookey, informed me that my service was no longer needed in this case and that I was being excused from my service as a juror.”

He continued:

“I was not asked any questions by the Judge or anyone before being dismissed from the jury, and I was not informed of the reason for my dismissal.”

According to Pattakos’ filing, the stated reason was that Simoneau had briefly fallen asleep during the first day of trial—an issue that allegedly occurred three days earlier.

Even Simoneau acknowledges that happened.

“While I did doze off for a few seconds during the trial that day, I did not miss any substantial evidence during those few seconds...”

Pattakos argues that timing is everything.

His filing cites Ohio case law cautioning against waiting until the conclusion of a trial to seek the removal of a juror, noting that doing so creates the appearance that parties are evaluating whether they like the direction that juror may be leaning.

And that is where this story stops being merely unusual.

Because then come the notebooks.

THE NOTEBOOKS

According to Simoneau, jurors were instructed that their notebooks would remain inside the courthouse overnight.

He says he developed a routine.

Every evening, he placed his juror lanyard inside his notebook to mark where he had stopped writing.

Every morning, he says, it had been moved.

“Every day when I left the Courthouse for the day, I had left my juror lanyard inside of my notebook to mark the place where my notes had left off...”

“Every morning when I returned to the jury room, I found my lanyard was removed from inside my notebook...”

After his dismissal, he says he never saw the notebook again.

Then came the surveillance footage.

According to Pattakos, public records requests produced videos showing court staff carrying juror notebooks into and out of Judge Beverly McGookey’s chambers before and after trial proceedings. Multiple exhibits attached to the filing allegedly document the movement of those notebooks over several days.

And then comes the sentence that may define this case:

“I am left to wonder whether the real reason I was excused from this jury on the last day of the trial was because someone from the Court or the Prosecutor’s office reviewed the notes in my notebook.”

That statement deserves to be read slowly.

Because it is not coming from Ashli Ford.

It is not coming from her attorney.

It is coming from a juror.

THE VIDEOS

The filing alleges the surveillance footage shows more than notebooks.

According to Pattakos, on May 21—the day before Juror Number 12 was removed—Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter and Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly remained behind after court had adjourned and the defense team had departed.

Pattakos writes:

“Baxter is pictured gesturing toward the jury box at 4:59:27 PM.”

The video referenced by in this statement was reviewed by The Independent Defender appears to show the actions alleged by Pattakos.

The filing alleges the conversations continued at the bench and later outside the courtroom near the elevators.

Additional footage also reviewed by The Independent Defender, allegedly depicts Assistant Prosecutor Paulette Lilly entering Judge McGookey’s chambers, where she remained for approximately five minutes.

Pattakos characterizes these interactions as improper ex parte communications.

Whether Ohio’s Supreme Court agrees remains to be seen.

But these are not routine allegations.

These are allegations that judges and prosecutors crossed lines that exist for a reason.

In America, judges are not supposed to be members of the prosecution team.

They are supposed to be the people standing between the government and the accused.

THE SECOND JUROR

Then came Lisa Hall.

Unlike Simoneau, Hall remained through deliberations.

According to her affidavit, the jury was deeply divided.

“There were two jurors who seemed committed to convicting the Defendant Ms. Ford from the very beginning of the deliberations...”

Eventually, the jury deadlocked.

A mistrial was declared.

And according to Hall, Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter addressed the jurors before they departed.

“Kevin Baxter looked at us from the prosecutor’s table and made a remark to us that was along the lines of ‘you got this wrong’ or ‘you made a mistake.’”

Hall wrote that she found both the comment and Baxter’s tone “intimidating and surprising.”

Then, according to Hall, Judge McGookey entered the jury room.

“Judge McGookey asked us, ‘what could we have done’ in this case to have ‘brought the case to a verdict.’”

Hall says she interpreted the judge’s use of the word “we” as suggesting disappointment that the jury had failed to convict.

When jurors explained they believed reasonable doubt existed, Hall states Judge McGookey responded:

“Even on the fraud charges?”

Hall’s affidavit concludes with a sentence that now sits before the Supreme Court of Ohio:

“These communications with the Prosecutor and the Judge have left me with the impression that both of them were biased against Ms. Ford for reasons that have nothing to do with the evidence at issue in the case.”

THE GAMBLE

There is one final thing worth understanding.

Attorneys do not accuse judges and prosecutors of jury tampering lightly.

They certainly do not accuse all three Common Pleas judges in a county.

And they do not file those allegations with the Supreme Court of Ohio unless they are willing to live with the consequences if they are wrong.

Peter Pattakos has now signed his name beneath phrases such as:

“Substantial evidence of jury tampering...”

“Intentional jury tampering...”

“The intolerable appearance of impropriety...”

Those are not words attorneys use accidentally.

And now they sit in a filing before Ohio’s highest court.

CODA: PEOPLE WHO KEEP NOTES

There is an old line, usually attributed to Hemingway, that says there are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering. Everything else is just games.

Journalism should have been on that list.

Because sooner or later, if you do this job long enough, you stop writing about institutions and start colliding with them.

I know. I have the scars to prove it.

Over the last year, I have watched Erie County become something of a hall of mirrors. Every door opens into another room. Every answer produces three new questions. And every time you think you’ve reached the bottom of the thing, someone hands you another affidavit.

This story began with Ashli Ford.

Then it became about a jury.

Then it became about notebooks.

Then it became about surveillance cameras.

And now, whether anyone likes it or not, it has become a matter for the Supreme Court of Ohio.

Somewhere tonight, there are people reading this story with their stomach in knots. There are lawyers making phone calls. There are public officials wondering what comes next. There are reporters pretending they don’t care while quietly reading every word.

Good.

They should.

Institutions don’t fear accusations.

They fear documentation.

They fear timelines.

They fear witnesses.

They fear people who keep notes.

And if the last few months have taught me anything, it is that Erie County has an awful lot of people who are suddenly very interested in who is keeping notes.

There is much more coming.

There are stories that have not been written.

Stories about courtrooms.

Stories about newsrooms.

Stories about conversations that powerful people believed would remain private forever.

Stories about what happens when a community begins pulling on a thread and discovers that it is attached to far more than anyone imagined.

But those stories will keep.

Tonight belongs to Juror Number 12.

Tonight belongs to twenty-six pages of notes.

And tonight, somewhere in Columbus, a filing sits on a desk asking a question that will not go away:

Did Erie County remove a juror because he doubted the state’s case?

Some days they’re loud, chaotic places where lives change by the minute.

Other days they’re governed by something far less dramatic.

A calendar.

Tuesday was one of those days.

Ashli Ford walked into Erie County Common Pleas Court prepared to answer a newly filed perjury indictment stemming from testimony she gave during her mortgage fraud trial. Judge Beverley McGookey took the bench. The state was ready to proceed.

One chair remained empty.

Defense attorney Peter Pattakos was tied up in another court proceeding nearly 90 minutes away.

Erie County Public Defender Robert Ritzler stepped in—not as Ford’s attorney, but to offer a narrow procedural option. He could stand in for Pattakos solely for the arraignment, or Ford could represent herself.

Ford chose to represent herself.

The court had other ideas.

Rather than conduct the arraignment without Ford’s attorney of record present, the court continued the hearing on its own motion, resetting it for Thursday, July 9, at 1:30 p.m.

No plea was entered.

Afterward, Ford described the delay as routine.

“Pete has an incredibly busy schedule in a court system that is an hour and a half away,” she told The Independent Defender. “The court wanted to ensure I had the opportunity to have my counsel of choice, and rescheduled the arraignment hearing for Thursday, July 9th. It is pretty standard stuff.”

The new indictment alleges Ford committed perjury while testifying during her mortgage fraud trial earlier this year.

That case ended not with a verdict, but with twelve jurors unable to agree. A mistrial.

Before anyone had finished absorbing the deadlock, Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter announced the state intended to try the case again. Judge McGookey placed the retrial on the August calendar.

Now the legal landscape has grown even more crowded.

Ford is simultaneously preparing for a second mortgage fraud trial, facing a separate perjury prosecution arising from testimony in the first trial, and awaiting a decision from Ohio’s Sixth District Court of Appeals on her challenge to her 2025 convictions.

That jury acquitted Ford of nine felony extortion counts, three felony telecommunications fraud counts and three misdemeanor falsification counts, but convicted her on four felony intimidation charges.

Pattakos has argued those convictions punished constitutionally protected political speech rather than criminal conduct, calling the appeal “one of the most important Ohio First Amendment cases in memory.”

The appellate court is expected to issue its decision sometime in July.

Tuesday produced no testimony, no arguments over evidence and no dramatic courtroom confrontation.

Instead, it offered a quieter reminder of how the justice system often works.

Sometimes the biggest decision of the day isn’t about guilt or innocence.

Sometimes it’s about making sure a defendant has the lawyer she chose before the next chapter begins.

Everyone wants to start the story of Iran in 1979.

But history didn’t start in 1979.

It started earlier.

Much earlier.

The history books in this country have a strange habit. They start the story of Iran somewhere around 1979, right at the moment when bearded clerics start screaming “Death to America” and students climb the walls of the U.S. Embassy like caffeinated raccoons. That’s where the cable news timeline begins. That’s where the talking heads lean back in their chairs and say, See? These people have always been crazy.

But history didn’t start in 1979.

It started earlier, in a smoky backroom full of men in suits who believed the entire planet was their chessboard and that oil was the only piece that mattered.

Seventy years ago, Iran looked, frankly, a lot like Cleveland with better architecture. Tehran had jazz clubs, movie theaters, women in short skirts, and universities full of students arguing about poetry and politics. Rock ’n’ roll spilled out of radios. Western tourists wandered the boulevards like they owned the place.

And politically? Iran had something rare in the Middle East at the time: a democratically elected leader.

His name was Mohammad Mossadegh — a secular nationalist with the inconvenient habit of believing that Iran’s oil should belong to Iran.

This was a radical concept if you happened to be the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, better known today as BP.

When Mossadegh nationalized Iran’s oil in 1951, it triggered the kind of panic usually reserved for meteor strikes and Soviet tank divisions.

London and Washington decided something had to be done.

So in 1953 the CIA and Britain’s MI6 launched a tidy little operation called Operation Ajax.

The playbook was simple:
Propaganda.
Bribery.
Riots.
Military pressure.

Within months Mossadegh was gone.

Democracy in Iran lasted roughly three years.

In his place the West installed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi — the Shah — a man who ruled like a glossy magazine advertisement for authoritarian stability.

To keep things tidy, the Shah created a secret police force called SAVAK.

SAVAK had all the usual tools of modern dictatorship: black sites, torture chambers, surveillance networks, and the sort of midnight knocks on the door that turn entire societies into whispering rooms.

Washington called him an ally.
Iranian dissidents called him a tyrant.

For twenty-five years Iran was effectively a Western-backed oil state with a crown on top.

And when people get desperate enough, when the prisons fill up and the secret police grow bold, they start looking for anyone promising dignity.

Enter Ruhollah Khomeini.

Khomeini was a cleric in exile, a man preaching resistance to foreign domination and the Shah’s regime. For millions of Iranians, he represented the only available hammer to smash the palace doors.

In 1979 the pressure finally blew the lid off.

The Iranian Revolution sent the Shah fleeing into exile. Khomeini returned to Tehran like a prophet stepping out of the clouds.

Then came the moment burned into American television memory forever: the Iran hostage crisis.

Students stormed the U.S. Embassy and held American diplomats hostage for 444 days.

From that moment on, the American public story of Iran begins.

But the next chapter was already underway.

In 1980, Saddam Hussein invaded Iran, launching the brutal Iran-Iraq War.

Washington quietly backed Iraq.

The United States provided intelligence, logistics, and political cover while Iraq deployed chemical weapons on the battlefield. The war became a grotesque industrial slaughterhouse that chewed up nearly a million Iranians.

Teenage boys were sent running into minefields with plastic keys around their necks — told the keys would open the gates of heaven.

Then, in 1988, an American warship fired missiles at a civilian airliner.

Iran Air Flight 655 fell out of the sky over the Persian Gulf.

Two hundred ninety people died.

Children. Families. Entire rows of humanity erased in a flash of radar and steel.

No apology ever truly landed.

Fast forward to today and the rhetoric sounds eerily familiar.

Israel strikes Iranian targets.
Washington immediately declares, “We stand with Israel.”
Politicians start whispering about “regime change.”

Suddenly the same voices who helped topple Iran’s democracy seventy years ago are talking again about freedom for the Iranian people.

But there’s always a curious gap in the timeline.

No mention of the coup.
No mention of the dictator.
No mention of the war that killed a generation.

Just the convenient myth that Iran woke up one morning in 1979 and decided to hate the West for sport.

The darker truth is simpler.

The West helped create the monster.

Now the monster is still breathing — and everyone is shocked by the teeth.

And if you look closely at the geopolitical theater right now, another familiar figure is already being floated as the “reasonable alternative” to Iran’s current regime:

Reza Pahlavi.

Same dynasty.
Same promises of stability.
Same whispering assurances from foreign powers that everything will work out this time.

History doesn’t repeat itself because people are stupid.

It repeats because the people running the machine never change the script.

And somewhere, in the smoke-filled rooms where global strategy is still written in oil contracts and covert memos, someone is almost certainly sketching the outline of the next chapter.

If the past seventy years are any guide, it will be written in blood.

Because once you see it — really see it — you can’t go back to the clean version of the story.

You can’t chant slogans anymore.

Newly released Jeffrey Epstein emails — more than 20,000 pages obtained and released by House Oversight Committee Democrats — have detonated across Washington with the force of a political depth charge.

They contain messages about presidents, prime ministers, financiers, victims, and fixers. But the most volatile sentence in the entire dump wasn’t written by Jeffrey Epstein at all.

It was written by his brother, Mark.

A blunt email — crude, unfiltered, and unmistakably real — asked:

“Ask him if Putin has photos of Trump blowing Bubba?”

The message, sent in March 2018 while Jeffrey Epstein was apparently sitting with former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, has since become the flash-point of the entire file release.

PBS NewsHour, The Miami Herald, New Republic and international outlets s have all confirmed the line’s authenticity and context.

For the first time, Americans are seeing, in writing, how Epstein’s own circle talked about two U.S. presidents and the Russian leader in terms usually reserved for spy novels and kompromat briefings — not casual family email exchanges.

What the new files show

The document tranche includes emails spanning more than a decade. Among them:

• Epstein telling Ghislaine Maxwell that Donald Trump spent “many hours at my house” with a victim later identified as Virginia Giuffre.

• Epstein telling author Michael Wolff that Trump “knew about the girls.”

• Epstein mixing political contacts, media relationships, and potential leverage strategies in email threads that read like master keys to the billionaire underworld.

The files were released by Committee Democrats, who say thousands more pages exist and that the White House is blocking full disclosure. Republicans counter that the release is “selective” and “clickbait.” Neither side disputes that the emails are real.

Trump’s team insists that Giuffre previously said he didn’t harm her and helped her get work.

Clinton’s team reiterates he knew nothing of Epstein’s trafficking operation.

Neither president has been accused in these new documents of committing a crime — but the proximity, frequency, and tone of Epstein’s references to them have become central to the controversy.

The Mark Epstein “Bubba” line: Why it matters

The infamous line appears in a short 2018 thread:

1. Mark Epstein sends Jeffrey a routine check-in.

2. Jeffrey responds that he is with Steve Bannon.

3. Mark fires back:

“Ask him if Putin has photos of Trump blowing Bubba?”

“Bubba” has long been a public nickname for Bill Clinton — used by allies and critics alike since Arkansas statehouse days.

Nobody in the thread clarifies whether Mark Epstein believed such images existed or whether he was joking, speculating, or needling Bannon. Regardless, the ease with which he pairs Trump, Clinton, and Putin in a single kompromat-themed sex reference is telling.

It reflects a worldview — shared among the wealthy, well-connected, and insulated — where presidents are not symbols of democracy but bargaining chips in an international casino.

This is why the line exploded globally. It crystallizes a truth the political class hates to admit:
in Epstein’s orbit, leverage mattered more than loyalty, and rumors functioned like currency.

White House and GOP reaction

The White House response has been to downplay the entire document release.

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee argue Democrats used selective, out-of-context materials. Trump has called the entire release a “hoax,” even while acknowledging Giuffre’s prior statements clearing him of misconduct.

But by identifying the victim in the emails — and asserting her statements are exculpatory — Republicans also confirm:

• The emails are authentic.

• Trump was in Epstein’s home with a woman Epstein considered a victim.

• Epstein was discussing Trump’s awareness of “the girls” with associates.

Democrats, meanwhile, say this is only the beginning and that tens of thousands more pages may be suppressed inside federal agencies.

Survivors and advocates: This isn’t the full story

For survivors of trafficking and their representatives, these emails confirm two long-held criticisms:

1. The federal government still hasn’t released everything.

2. The men in Epstein’s network spoke about victims — and presidents — like assets.

While the Mark Epstein email is not proof of criminal activity by any political figure, it is proof of something deeper and more corrosive:
in the circles where Epstein operated, the idea that presidents could be compromised was considered plausible enough to joke about.

The files don’t show the whole picture — but they show a shattered fragment of it.

Filed from a newsroom that smells like ozone, spilled coffee, and the faint electrical buzz of a country that still pretends it hasn’t seen the monster in the mirror.

When Congress finally agreed late Sunday night to end the historic 40-day federal shutdown, the cheers were cautious.
Because buried inside the late-night compromise was a single clause with enormous stakes for ordinary Americans: a December vote to decide the fate of the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits — the subsidies that keep insurance affordable for tens of millions.

If that vote fails, Ohio alone could see an insurance premium explosion for roughly 583,000 residents who rely on marketplace plans. More than 90 percent of them currently receive some level of federal assistance to offset monthly costs.

🔍 What’s Actually in the Deal

The measure funds the government through January 30, 2026, restoring operations shuttered since early October. But it punts the central fight over ACA subsidies to December, when lawmakers must vote whether to extend or overhaul the premium tax-credit program.

President Donald Trump hailed the agreement as an opportunity to redirect funding “directly to the people.”

“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the hundreds of billions of dollars currently being sent to money-sucking insurance companies in order to save the bad health care provided by Obamacare, be sent directly to the people so that they can purchase their own, much better, health care, and have money left over.” — President Trump, via Axios

Democrats, led by Sen. Patty Murray, say that plan would “gut the law’s foundation” and push millions off coverage. “We need stability, not sabotage,” she said in a statement late Sunday.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune struck a more optimistic tone:

• 583,000 Ohioans buy insurance through the ACA marketplace.

• More than 90 percent get help paying premiums through subsidies.

• A 60-year-old couple making ≈ $82,000 could face $15,500 a year more in premiums.

Before the rot, before the fire hazards and the lawsuits and the silence, there was only a handshake, a smile, and the promise of resurrection. I thought I was buying hope. What I really bought was the wreckage of a man’s delusion—and a front-row seat to watch it fall apart.

In the Bible, locusts are never just insects. They’re omens — devourers sent ahead of the plague. They arrive in swarms, consume everything green and living, and move on without remorse or memory. They don’t build. They don’t rest. They leave silence and ash behind them, and people call it judgment. A locust doesn’t mean harm; it simply is harm, driven by appetite and wind.

I had no idea he was a locust when I met him.

Back then, Shawn Dailey was just another big-talking dream salesman with a cause righteous enough to hide the cracks underneath. Independent music in Sandusky, he said. Art. Community. Safe space.

He said it like a prayer for the bored and broken, for anyone left behind by the great American exit. Halo Live would be the light, he swore—the stage that never judged, the church resurrected through amplifiers and drag glitter.

He could make rot sound like potential. He could turn mildew into metaphor. There’s an art to that kind of delusion, and Shawn was fluent.

We were Facebook friends before any of this—two loudmouths orbiting the same local scandals, politicians and issues trading sarcasm for sport.

When I finally met him in person, he sold me on Halo like it was already halfway to heaven: full houses, loyal crowds, sponsorships “pending,” a radio tower “in progress,” grant money “imminent.”
He spoke only in future tense—a preacher of tomorrows that never arrived.

People told me not to buy in.
They said he’s trouble, he burns everyone, the place is a mess.
But I wanted to believe there was still something worth saving in this town. Hope makes you stupid that way.

In Shawn’s telling, John—the landlord—was the villain.
John was “harassing the staff,” “hounding rent,” “demanding repairs he should do himself.”
By the time I entered the picture, Halo wasn’t just a venue; it was a lawsuit with a PA system.

Then I started talking to John.
No bluster, no spin—just fatigue. He’d had enough. He didn’t even hate Shawn anymore; he just wanted out.
I offered him an escape hatch: I’d buy the church, take the burden off his hands, and give him a small settlement to end the eviction and save Shawn from having that mark on his record.
No lawyers, no court, just signatures and silence.

He agreed.
The day we signed, the office smelled like toner and old carpet. John pushed the contract toward me, pen scratching like a fuse. He looked relieved; maybe he even pitied me.
I didn’t notice—I was already picturing the lights back on, the music rising again, the church alive.

After the ink dried, I laid out a deal with Shawn.
Simple math, clean slate.
He’d cover the mortgage—eight hundred a month—plus insurance—six fifty, and property taxes—two fifty.
In exchange, he’d get to keep Halo running inside the building.
But there were conditions, spelled out plain as daylight:
no more gasoline cans and lawn equipment stored inside like a ticking fire trap;
he’d clean the mess, scrape and patch the peeling plaster that was raining down onto the bar;
unclog the gutters;
clear the basement of debris;
and start undoing the rot that had crept into every corner.

I even told him I’d help when I could—weekends, evenings, a few hours here and there.
He was thrilled.
He called it a partnership.
Said a few small repairs would “save the dream.”
He blamed the neglect on his fight with John—said he couldn’t touch the place while they were in court, couldn’t justify spending money on a building he might lose.
Maybe that made sense for a minute.
I wanted it to make sense.

Then, sitting in the attorney’s office as the papers were being shuffled, the cracks began to form.
She slid me a copy of the original lease between Shawn and John, and I read the line in black and white: tenant is responsible for all repairs and maintenance.
There it was—the truth buried in the fine print.
Here he’d been blaming John for everything, and the responsibility had been his all along.
It hit me like cold water, but the momentum was already too far gone to stop.

When I left the office, I drove straight to the church.
The bell tower rose out of the twilight like an exhausted monument. Inside, the air was thick—weed, sweat, beer, incense, mildew—a baptism of dust and bad decisions.
The light through the stained glass still fought to make the place look holy, shards of blue and crimson falling across the cracked stage.

Shawn was there, pacing, wired with excitement. Two of his hangers-on sprwaled and nodding on the old sofa in the venue.
We celebrated like idiots—laughter, big talk about community nights, drag shows, punk weekends, open mics, art fairs.
I called it the resurrection.

For a little while, in that haze of smoke and cheap optimism, it felt real.
I believed the lies because belief was cheaper than proof.
The church glowed soft and gold under the last light of the day, dust turning to glitter in the air.
It looked almost alive again.

I didn’t know then that I’d just bought the ruins of a promise and signed up to watch it collapse in slow motion.

A mom in Sandusky asked a simple question online:

“If you have WIC, is your card loading & working?”

She wasn’t looking for politics or pity — she was trying to feed her damn kid.

And out crawled some local hero with a keyboard and an ego, typing:

“Mine says WORK.”

That’s the sickness, folks. The rot that’s eating us alive.
The disease of smug cruelty — people so desperate to feel superior that they mock hunger and call it patriotism.

They wave flags and quote scripture while sneering at women feeding babies. They brag about “hard work” as if decency was optional — as if empathy were a luxury only the rich can afford.

These are the same people who would’ve watched the breadlines during the Depression and laughed.

The same people who believe poverty is a moral failing, not an economic trap.

America used to look out for its neighbors. Now we just point at them.
The new religion isn’t Christianity — it’s cruelty.
The new creed isn’t love — it’s “mine says WORK.”

If that’s you, then congratulations — you’ve traded your soul for a slogan.

Because the real work?
It’s not mowing lawns or clocking hours.
It’s lifting people up.
It’s feeding the hungry.
It’s choosing kindness when the mob chooses mockery.

And if you can’t do that — if you mock the poor and laugh at mothers —
then you’re not working. You’re rotting.

🕯️ Feed the hungry. Shame the cruel. That’s the real American work ethic.

A Crown for a President Who Dreams of Thrones

In one of the strangest acts of international pageantry in recent memory, President Donald Trump stepped into the ancient capital of Gyeongju, South Korea this week — and walked out symbolically crowned.

The South Korean government, led by President Lee Jae Myung, presented Trump with both the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the nation’s highest civilian honor, and a replica of a royal crown from the Silla dynasty, one of Korea’s oldest kingdoms.

The move came as American streets filled once again with protesters chanting “No Kings!” — a direct jab at Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and his open boasts about “total immunity.”

Timing, it seems, is everything.

👑 The Gift That Launched a Thousand Memes

The glittering crown, modeled after one excavated from the Cheonmachong royal tomb, is made of gold, jade, and polished gilt wire — symbols of “heavenly authority” in Silla culture.

South Korean officials said it represents “the divine connection between the authority of the heavens and sovereignty on earth, as well as the strong leadership of a ruler.”

But in America, where the word “sovereign” now sets off political air-raid sirens, the optics were pure irony.

As one Seoul activist told reporters:

“You don’t hand a crown to a man who already thinks he’s king.”

Even the Korean press called the scene “a masterclass in trolling.” Seoul got to flatter the U.S. President and quietly mock his monarchic self-image — all while strengthening trade and security ties.

🕴 The Theater of Power

Trump, of course, played the part. Standing beneath the glass-lit crown display, he called the gift “beautiful — a sign of true respect between two great nations.” Cameras flashed, aides smiled, the global press took the bait.

South Korea got its moment of pomp. Trump got a new photo for Truth Social.
And the world got another surreal entry in the ever-expanding “Trump as Monarch” file.

“Will I be king?” he once quipped.
“No — I’m not a king.”

Right. But the crown still gleamed like destiny in waiting.

🏺 The Kingdom Behind the Crown

The Silla dynasty (57 BCE – 935 CE) ruled from the same ground Trump visited — the rolling city of Gyeongju. It was once known as the “City of Gold,” its royal tombs filled with diadems, jewelry, and Buddhist relics of staggering craftsmanship.

The Rise

Silla began as a small tribal confederacy and, through alliances and brutal wars, unified the Korean peninsula in 668 CE with help from China’s Tang dynasty. The kingdom flourished — palaces, temples, trade routes, and art that reached all the way to Persia.

The Fall

But by the 9th century, the gold was tarnished.

• Royal corruption and aristocratic greed hollowed out the core.

• Local governors hoarded taxes.

• Peasants rebelled.

• Neighboring states — Later Baekje and Taebong — rose and tore the realm apart.

By 935 CE, the last Silla king, Gyeongsun, surrendered to the rising Goryeo dynasty — ending nearly a millennium of rule.

A civilization drowned not by invasion, but by hubris.

Silla thrived for almost a thousand years — art, poetry, Buddhism, trade routes stretching from Persia to Japan — until it rotted from the inside.

Corruption. Nepotism. Aristocrats so bloated with privilege they thought they were gods. Peasants starved while the palace hoarded gold.

Sound familiar?

⚖️ The Lesson in the Gilding

Every crown has a price tag. Every empire has a warning label.

The Silla kings believed their gold crowns channeled heaven’s favor — until famine, corruption, and revolt shattered that illusion. The lesson echoes now, across oceans and centuries:

When power becomes costume, the kingdom collapses.

So when Seoul placed that symbolic gold circlet before Trump, the ghosts of Silla may have chuckled. The crown wasn’t just a gift. It was a mirror.

🔥 Coda: Fear & Loathing in Gyeongju

Picture the scene:
Camera strobes flashing like tracer rounds.
A billionaire populist squinting under museum lights.
A crown in a glass box, shimmering like a Vegas relic of empire.
Outside, protest signs reading NO KINGS, fluttering in the cold autumn wind.

The Silla kings thought their crowns made them gods.
Trump thinks his makes him immortal.

Neither of them learned that power without humility is just costume jewelry.

The Silla crown sits behind glass now — a relic of a civilization that forgot how to serve its people. Someday, maybe centuries from now, Trump’s golden gifts will sit in a museum too, and a child will ask:

Somewhere, an old Korean historian mutters:

“Our golden crowns weren’t meant for this.”

And somewhere else — maybe here, maybe in America’s own temples of power — another dynasty forgets what made it fall the last time.

“Why did they crown a man who said he was just a president?”

And the curator will sigh.

“Because every empire needs its final joke.”

💬 Author’s Note

The math is cruel and simple. Forty-two million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP — to keep food on the table. On November 1, that entire system may grind to a halt thanks to the federal shutdown engineered in Washington, and President Donald Trump’s refusal to lift a finger to stop it.

Meanwhile, in Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine — the quiet-spoken Republican who usually hugs the middle of the road like it’s painted gold — did something rare in this season of partisan rot: he acted. On Thursday he signed Executive Order 2025-06D, authorizing $25 million in state-controlled emergency funds to keep low-income families from going hungry.

The order taps Ohio’s rainy-day reserve to deliver short-term relief:

• $7 million to regional food banks,

• Up to $18 million in direct assistance for roughly 63,000 Ohioans living at or below 50 percent of the poverty line.

It’s a patch, not a parachute. But it’s something — and “something” is rare mercy these days.

“While we will always do everything we can to support Ohioans who need it most, this is not a viable long-term solution,” DeWine said Thursday. “The best solution remains the simplest one: pass the continuing resolution and reopen the federal government.”

For once, he’s right.

The Hunger Line Is Already Forming

Across Ohio, the lines at food pantries are stretching longer by the day. In Hamilton County alone, 96,000 people depend on SNAP — 43,000 of them kids. Without federal benefits, food banks face a tidal wave of need with no federal backfill in sight.

DeWine’s order instructs the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to double the monthly cash-aid payments for Ohio Works First households and start issuing emergency benefits if federal funds stop flowing. It won’t cover everyone — not even close — but it could keep the poorest families from losing every scrap of support when the checks stop coming.

Let’s be clear: DeWine didn’t turn liberal overnight. His press conference still blamed “Senate Democrats” for blocking a continuing-resolution vote. But somewhere under the suit and the cautious phrasing, there’s at least a flicker of conscience — a recognition that letting children starve while politicians preen for the cameras is a moral obscenity.

And for that, this paper — usually no friend to the governor — will give him reluctant, grinding-teeth credit. Because when the choice is between “nothing” and “something,” you take the something.

Meanwhile, in Washington: Cruelty as Policy

While DeWine was signing papers to keep people fed, President Trump’s administration posted notices warning that no SNAP payments will go out November 1 if the shutdown continues. The U.S. Department of Agriculture acknowledged it has about $5 billion in contingency funds — enough to bridge the gap for a month — but the President’s team has flatly refused to use it.

Instead, the White House blames Congress, the Senate, the “radical left,” or whoever’s handy that day. “We’re going to get it done,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, waving away the looming hunger crisis as if it were a scheduling conflict.

Get it done, he said — but not before millions of low-income families are told to check their balance and find $0.00.

That’s not leadership; that’s cruelty in a tailored suit. It’s starvation by spreadsheet, and the President seems to relish the leverage. A coalition of 25 states is now suing his administration for dereliction of duty, accusing the USDA of “deliberate inaction in the face of foreseeable harm.”

For a man who built his brand on “America First,” it’s remarkable how little interest he shows in feeding America.

The Numbers Behind the Disaster

In Ohio alone, more than 1.4 million residents rely on SNAP — an average monthly outlay of $264 million in federal benefits. The state’s emergency patch barely covers ten percent of that. When the federal spigot closes, the math collapses in days.

The USDA’s refusal to release its contingency funds isn’t about fiscal restraint; it’s political theater. They want pressure. They want pain. And they’re getting it — at grocery checkouts, in lunchboxes, in the panic rising across rural towns and inner-city neighborhoods alike.

Food banks can’t print money. Charities can’t conjure meat and milk out of thin air. You either feed people or you don’t. DeWine, for all his political calculation, at least chose the former.

The Moral Divide

This isn’t a partisan issue — it’s a moral one.
Mike DeWine’s move was pragmatic compassion. Donald Trump’s was performative cruelty.

One man signed an order to keep Ohioans fed.
The other let the federal safety net unravel and called it strategy.

And that’s the heart of it. There’s a difference between politics and punishment. Trump thrives on chaos, on using the pain of the poor as a bargaining chip. DeWine, perhaps remembering that governors still live among the governed, decided not to let Ohio’s kids pay for D.C.’s tantrum.

Gonzo Coda: The Guillotine Dreams of the Hungry

This is where the bile rises. The air smells like desperation and diesel, like empty fridges and broken promises. You can hear the gears of empire grinding bone — the sound of bureaucrats congratulating themselves while mothers cry over expired milk.

We’ve been here before. Bread lines in the richest country on Earth, while the men in charge dine on gold-plated steaks and call it strength. Trump’s America is Versailles without the mirrors polished — same arrogance, same disconnect, same contempt for the peasants clawing at the gates.

And when the bread runs out, history teaches us what comes next.
They called it La Révolution Française back then — the moment when the starving stopped begging and started building scaffolds. The mob didn’t come for ideology. They came for food. For dignity. For revenge.

Don’t think it can’t happen here.

Somewhere in Appalachia, a single mother will open her SNAP app and see nothing. A Vietnam vet will stand in a grocery line, proud and furious, clutching a can of beans he can’t afford. Children will feel hunger gnawing like a rat in the belly. And all the while, the President will smile into a camera, his orange grin glowing like the last ember before the fire.

Governor DeWine — reluctant, cautious, and damn near shocked by his own decency — at least tried to toss a rope into the flood. Trump is the man on the bridge cutting the line and calling it leadership.

We are supposed to be civilized. But hunger is older than civility.
And when the stomachs start rumbling loud enough, the palaces tremble.

So eat well, Mr. President. Feast while you can.
Because the people are starving, and the guillotine dreams of the hungry.

President Donald J. Trump has ordered the United States to resume nuclear weapons testing, ending more than three decades of uneasy silence in the desert.

In a terse, thunderous statement from South Korea, Trump declared that the Pentagon should “begin testing our Nuclear Weapons immediately” to match China and Russia “on an equal basis.” No mention of cost. No mention of safety. No mention of the men who coughed blood into their hands beneath mushroom clouds seventy years ago.

And so, here we go again — right back into the heart of the radioactive dream.

The Ghost Battalion: America’s Atomic Veterans

Between 1945 and 1992, nearly 400,000 U.S. troops participated in nuclear weapons tests — ordered to stand at ground zero, ordered to watch, ordered to march toward ground zero once the flash had faded and the dust still glowed.
