Compassion does not offer care because we approve of a person—or because they coincide with our theological beliefs, ethnic preferences, political convictions, or gender biases.

That’s not how it works. We care because those we encounter are people.

God offers indiscriminate compassion. He rains on the just and the unjust.

One step farther: He equally loves those who “died believing in him (heaven) and those who died cursing him (hell.)”

One step even farther, beyond where you and I could ever go: His compassion continues to this day to extend to Lucifer.

He is a God of indiscriminate compassion.

Whether someone acknowledges His existence.
Whether they follow Jesus, follow another messiah, or choose to follow no faith at all.

Whether someone chooses to live according to the ways of Jesus’ Kingdom—or live in ways that are its polar opposite.

Compassion is supposed to be hard. It is hard. That’s the point. In fact, compassion may be one of the clearest litmus tests of what we actually believe.

Compassion distinguishes authentic love from religious rhetoric. It reveals whether our “easy-to-hold beliefs” have permeated our “hard—to —change” behaviors—or whether our beliefs have simply become words we use to justify our self image inspired acts.

A 5-year-old Texan just spent the first day of school in an ICE detention center. ICE kidnapped Liam Tadeo on his way to a soccer game with his dad. Liam should be in kindergarten. Instead, our government has thrown him in a prison camp hundreds of miles from home. Compassion?

Recent government data revealed that ICE detained more than 49,000 migrants in July, the highest monthly total of President Trump’s second term. Compassion?

Analysts say the increase reflects mounting pressure on ICE to meet Administration imposed arrest targets, raising concerns that agentsare increasingly targeting those who are easiest to find, rather than focusing primarily on serious criminals.

A DHS spokesperson confirmed that just over 40 percent of those detained had no criminal record, with noncriminal arrests already exceeding the total for all of 2025.

Whatever our politics, the question for those who claim to follow Jesus is not complicated:

Are we following the lead of government, or are we choosing to be a compassionate people?

It was Jesus who touched the leper. Jesus who welcomed the prostitute. Jesus who elevated the woman from Samaria, and the Gods Samaritan rescusong the person beside the road.

Jesus crossed boundaries that religions had constructed as forbidden territory, and healed those who religious faithful had rejected.

And it was Jesus who rode into Jerusalem weeping—because those he had compassion for would never recognize the depth of His love.

That is the scandal of compassion.

It does not wait for people to become worthy. Compassion exposes those who hide behind Christian dogma who withhold the very love they claim to have received. Compassion exposes the moment when “faith” becomes a smokescreen for fear, prejudice, exclusion, or indifference.

Because compassion has no loophole. the lack of compassion exposes this President and entourage who claim to construct a nation reflecting him. Their continuing hypocritical behavior hides behind their thirst for power.

You cannot claim to follow Jesus while continually to find reasons why certain people are exempt from the the compassion that is sourced in his love.

We should never try to reconcile Jesus with those calling for a return of America as a “Christian nation.” Jesus has nothing to do with this far right push.

No part.
