Fui consciente de mi contradicción personal desde el comienzo de mi trayectoria. A diferencia de mis dos maestros espirituales —Trungpa Rimpoché y Dhiravamsa, el primero nacido para desempeñar su papel y el segundo llegado a él tras años de experiencia y formación—, a mí se me invitó, por así decirlo, a probar suerte en ello. Podría haberme negado, por supuesto, cuando Dhiravamsa me pidió que le ayudara; pero no lo hice, pues parecía algo destinado a suceder. Él me brindó una formación exhaustiva. No obstante, la tarea no me resultaba nada cómoda. Incluso hoy en día, cuando me encuentro sentado en una silla o en un cojín frente a un grupo de personas y estoy a punto de abrir la boca para empezar a hablar, a menudo experimento la extraña sensación de estar viviendo un sueño lúcido, mientras en mi corazón surge la pregunta: «¿Qué haces aquí? ¿Qué derecho tienes a enseñar nada a nadie?». Supongo que esto se debe, en parte, a una desconfianza anárquica y profundamente arraigada hacia toda autoridad, algo que he sentido desde mis años de escuela.

Tras los primeros años lidiando con la incertidumbre y la duda, y probando constantemente diferentes enfoques, logré dar con una forma de trabajar que me permitía trascender el papel de maestro en el sentido convencional —alguien que transmite conocimientos— y simplemente ser yo mismo. En este sentido, la noción budista de *Kalyana Mitr* me ha servido de guía útil para relacionarme con otras personas que buscan llevar una vida espiritual.

*Kalyana Mitr* significa, sencillamente, «buen compañero»: alguien que camina junto a otro —no guiando, sino acompañando— y que, en lugar de ejercer poder o autoridad sobre los demás, ofrece su apoyo. He intentado ser un buen compañero para quienes practican conmigo, recordándome constantemente ciertos aspectos fundamentales.

En primer lugar, no identificarme con el rol de maestro —de quien se espera que tenga todas las respuestas—, sino mantener lo que el difunto maestro zen Shunryu Suzuki llamaba la «mente de principiante»: esa curiosidad que surge no de saber o de aparentar saber, sino de permanecer abierto al aprendizaje.

En segundo lugar, tratar de ser coherente —lo que básicamente significa estar alineado en cuerpo, corazón y mente, así como en pensamiento, palabra y acción— y ser la misma persona tanto frente al grupo como en el comedor, sin insistir en recibir un trato especial: es decir, hacer cola como los demás, recoger tu habitación antes de irte y ocuparte de las tareas cotidianas. También implica hablar con franqueza sobre lo que estás viviendo, en lugar de actuar como si estuvieras por encima de los conflictos y el caos habituales que todos atraviesan.

En tercer lugar, esquivar con la mayor destreza posible las proyecciones que se dirigen hacia ti, sin apropiarte de los elogios ni de las aclamaciones. El taichí me ha ayudado enormemente en este aspecto: ceder y responder sin resistencia.

Otra cosa que me ha ayudado a lo largo de los años son los votos de Bodhisattva que hice al principio de mi formación; no fui consciente de su importancia hasta que finalmente comprendí que me proporcionaban el sentido de propósito que buscaba en mi trabajo. Aunque la noción de Bodhisattva (guerrero espiritual) está presente en todas las escuelas del budismo y es fundamental en la vía del Mahayana, he llegado a considerarla, en términos seculares, como el arquetipo más relevante y necesario para los tiempos que vivimos. He aquí una definición sencilla de Bodhisattva que encontré:

Un individuo que afronta el sufrimiento del mundo con compasión radical, no agresión, y con valentía interior, en lugar de con violencia.

Las diez cualidades del Bodhisattva son cualidades humanas perfectamente normales que todos conocemos: generosidad, integridad, sacrificio, inteligencia, vitalidad, paciencia, honestidad, compromiso, amor benevolente y valentía. El desafío reside en vivirlas cada día en nuestra interacción con los demás y con el mundo; aquí es donde la cuestión se vuelve interesante, no solo como una herramienta para reconocer nuestras propias carencias y debilidades, sino también como una guía para nuestra evolución y crecimiento personal. La práctica en sí misma implica rememorar cada una de estas cualidades y vincularlas con esa compasión radical que constituye la fuente de la que emanan. Al hacerlo, se nos recuerda continuamente cuánto trabajo queda por hacer simplemente para ser un ser humano decente, sin dejar espacio para la arrogancia y la certeza que a veces caracterizan a quien posee una identidad espiritual.

Esta práctica no solo me ha aportado sentido de dirección y propósito, sino que también ha transformado mi relación con los demás a lo largo de los años. En mi juventud, solía ser extremadamente crítico con todo y con todos. Esta estrategia de autodefensa no solo no funcionó realmente, sino que me atrapó en una perspectiva negativa que alimentaba mi constante decepción ante el comportamiento de la gente y el estado lamentable del mundo. Hoy en día, nos veo a todos como reflejos los unos de los otros: vulnerables y falibles, pero con el potencial de descubrir algo más noble en nuestro interior. También recuerdo constantemente el principio fundamental que defendieron Nelson Mandela y el obispo Desmond Tutu: el *Ubuntu*, una antigua filosofía sudafricana que significa «yo soy porque nosotros somos» y que habla de nuestra interconexión, compasión y humanidad compartida.En cuanto a las cosas terribles que suceden en el mundo, me encontré con esto:

Un bodhisattva ama al mundo precisamente porque está roto, transformando la tarea imposible de arreglarlo en un camino de compasión incondicional.

Por último, en el capítulo anterior ya mencioné lo que una sabia mujer nonagenaria, la Dra. Winnifred Rushforth, me transmitió al inicio de mi carrera:

Recibir, sostener, transmitir.

Esta sencilla y profunda enseñanza sigue guiándome, sosteniéndome y motivándome.

I was aware of the contradiction from the start of my career. Unlike my two spiritual teachers, Trungpa Rinpoche and Dhiravamsa, the former born into his role and the latter coming to it through years of experience and training, I was invited to try my hand at it, as it were. I could, of course have refused when Dhiravamsa asked me to help him. But I didn’t, as it seemed to be something meant to happen. He gave me a thorough training. Nevertheless, I was not at all comfortable with the task. Even nowadays when I find myself on a chair or a cushion in front of a group of people and I am about to open my mouth and start talking, I often feel this strange sensation of being in a waking dream, with the question arising in my heart: what are you doing here? What gives you the right to be teaching anything to anyone? This, I guess, comes partly from a deeply embedded anarchic distrust of all authority that I have had since my schooldays.

After the initial years of struggling with uncertainty and doubt and constantly trying different approaches I was gradually able to cut through to a way of working that allowed me to bypass the role of teacher in the accepted sense – someone who hands down knowledge - and just be myself. In this respect, the Buddhist notion of ‘Kalyana Mitr’ has been a useful guideline for me as a way of being among others who are trying to live a spiritual life and connecting to them.

Kalyana Mitr means simply a good companion, someone who walks alongside another, not leading but accompanying, not having power or authority over anyone else but offering support. I have tried to be a good companion to those who practise with me by constantly reminding myself of certain basic things.

Firstly, not to identify with the role of teacher – someone expected to have the answers - but to keep what the late Zen Buddhist teacher Shunryu Suzuki called ‘Beginner’s Mind’, the curiosity that comes from not knowing or pretending to know, but staying open to learning.

Secondly, to try to be coherent, which means basically being aligned in body, heart and mind, thought, speech and action, and to be the same person when you are in front of the group as in the dining room and not insist on being treated in any special way: i.e. get in the queue like everyone else, clean up your room before leaving, do the mundane tasks. It also means to be straightforward in sharing what you are going through in your life rather than acting as if you are above all the usual mess and conflicts that everyone goes through.

Thirdly, to sidestep the projections that are directed towards you as skilfully as possible, and not take on the praise or the acclaim. The Tai Chi has helped me greatly in this respect; yielding and responding without resistance.

Another thing that has helped me over the years has been the Bodhisattva vows that I took early on in my training, unaware of its importance until I finally realized that they provided me with the sense of purpose that I was looking for in my work. Even though the notion of the Bodhisattva (spiritual warrior) is found in all the schools of Buddhism and is central to the Mahayana path, I have come to consider it in secular terms as the archetype most relevant and needed in the times we live in. Here is a simple definition of a Bodhisattva that I came across:

an individual who confronts the suffering of the world with radical compassion, non-aggression, and inner courage rather than violence.

The ten qualities of the Bodhisattva are perfectly normal human qualities that we are all familiar with: Generosity, Integrity, Sacrifice, Intelligence, Vitality, Patience, Honesty, Commitment, Loving kindness, Courage. The challenge is to live them in our interaction with others and with the world, and this is where it becomes interesting, not only as a tool for recognising where our failings and weaknesses are, but also as a guideline for our own evolution and growth. The practice itself involves recalling each of the qualities and relating them back to the that radical compassion that is the source from which they flow. By doing this we are constantly reminded of how much more work is needed just to be a decent human being, with no room for the arrogance and certainty that sometimes marks a person who thinks he/she has found a spiritual identity.

This practice has not only given me the sense of direction and purpose but changed my relationship to other people over the years. As a young man I was hyper-critical of everyone and everything. This self-defence strategy not only didn’t really work, but trapped me in a negative slant that supported my constant disappointment regarding people’s behaviour and the shitty state of the world. Nowadays I see us all as reflections of one another, vulnerable and fallible but with the potential to discover something finer within each of us. I am also constantly reminded of the core principle upheld by Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu : namely, Ubuntu, an old South African philosophy meaning ‘"I am because we are."which speaks of our interconnectedness, compassion, and shared humanity. As for the awful things that continue to happen in the world, I came across this:

A bodhisattva loves the world precisely because it is broken, transforming the impossible task of fixing it into a path of unconditional compassion.

Finally, in the previous chapter I already mentioned what a wise lady in her 90’s called Dr. Winnifred Rushforth transmitted to me early on in my career:

Receive, Hold, Pass it on

This simple, deep teaching continues to guide, sustain and motivate me.

Sin embargo, fue algo más que un momento marcado por dudas sobre uno mismo o confusión emocional. Desde entonces, he acompañado a muchas personas en sus propias crisis —causadas por duelo, separación, agotamiento, fracaso, síndrome de estrés postraumático, etcétera—, cada una de ellas única. No obstante, también compartían rasgos comunes; el principal era esa sensación de fragmentación que hace imposible seguir adelante con la vida de siempre. La locura, si quieres. Quien haya pasado por esto lo entenderá.

Haría falta un volumen entero para detallar lo que ocurrió durante mi colapso; tal vez algún día encuentre la energía y la motivación para hacerlo. Pero, por ahora, me limitaré a la relevancia que aquello tuvo en mi evolución como maestro. Implicó dejar de querer sentarme ante la gente a recitar las mismas fórmulas, a cumplir con las expectativas, a brindar apoyo, a solucionar los problemas ajenos y a intentar ser alguien que no era. También surgieron graves problemas personales en mi matrimonio, estrechamente vinculados al hecho de que ahora pasaba mucho tiempo expuesto a la opinión pública: ya no era solo un esposo y un padre, sino alguien que se compartía con los demás.

«...Todos ven que estás hecho pedazos. Todos oyen soplar el viento». Este verso de la canción *Graceland*, de Paul Simon, lo resume a la perfección.

Durante unos meses, me alejé de todo.

En el verano de 1980, Dhiravamsa —que por aquel entonces vivía en California y contaba con un gran número de seguidores en Berkeley— me envió una carta y un billete de avión para que fuera a ayudarle en un retiro de un mes que estaba a punto de impartir. Creo que se había enterado de mi situación. En cualquier caso, su tono era insistente y, además, estaba el billete. En el estado en que me encontraba, viajar a California no me resultaba nada tentador. De hecho, cuando recibí la carta —que me habían reenviado desde Chapter House—, me hallaba escondido en la granja de un amigo en el centro de Francia. Sin embargo, tras todo lo que Dhiravamsa había hecho por mí, sentí que no podía fallarle.

Haría falta otro volumen para describir mi primer viaje a Estados Unidos y la experiencia de estar en aquel vasto país, totalmente nuevo y, a la vez, familiar en tantos aspectos gracias al cine y la música que habían marcado mi juventud. Tras pasar tres días en el Área de la Bahía de San Francisco, me encontraba en Gualala, en el norte de California, junto a un numeroso grupo de personas a las que no había visto nunca antes. Dhiravamsa me dijo que la mayoría de ellos estaba familiarizada con el yoga, el tai chi, el chi kung y otras formas de trabajo corporal y terapias, pero que necesitaban lo que yo había estado haciendo en Chapter House. Durante las conversaciones que mantuvimos a lo largo de los días que pasamos juntos en su casa de Berkeley —al ver lo desencantado que estaba yo con la enseñanza—, estoy seguro de que aquella fue su manera de mantenerme centrado. En cualquier caso, funcionó; en parte porque la rutina estructurada del retiro me obligó a restablecer una disciplina necesaria para mi recuperación. Sin embargo, no fue fácil verme de nuevo, tras varios meses de ausencia, en la situación de atender las necesidades de los demás, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que eso mismo formaba parte del problema. Y eso fue lo que hice: volver a reunir los elementos desde la base hacia arriba —el enraizamiento, la presencia—; prácticas sencillas, tomadas y adaptadas de las artes marciales y del chi kung, que sigo realizando con personas que, de una forma u otra, se han desmoronado.

Tres cosas sucedieron durante aquel mes en Gualala que contribuyeron a la transformación que experimenté ese verano. Todas ellas parecen obvias ahora. La primera fue una especie de revelación.

Una tarde, poco después de comenzar el retiro, durante el tiempo de descanso, una joven amable y dulce me llevó a la playa cercana. Era la primera vez que pisaba la costa de California. La playa era amplia y estaba desierta. El oleaje era potente. El sol caía con intensidad. A lo largo de la arena había enormes troncos blanqueados. Tras nadar un poco, nos sentamos a contemplar el océano; fue entonces cuando las palabras que la doctora Winnifred Rushforth me había dicho tres años atrás resonaron de nuevo en mi corazón como un eco. (Creo que hablé de mis encuentros con ella en Edimburgo en una de las series de Substack). Aquello surgió en respuesta a mi pregunta sobre qué era lo que la impulsaba a seguir adelante a mediados de sus noventa años. «Recibir, sostener, transmitir», me dijo mientras hacía un gesto en el aire. Asimilé la sencillez misteriosa de su respuesta, pero no le di más vueltas hasta que me encontré en aquella playa del norte de California. Durante ese tiempo, diversas personas se acercaron para decirme cuánto se estaban beneficiando del trabajo corporal. Entre ellas, un hombre mayor de aspecto distinguido —que en su día había sido la imagen de la marca de tabaco Marlborough y ahora dirigía su propia agencia de publicidad— se ofreció a ser mi representante y hacerme ganar muchísimo dinero si decidía quedarme en California. La oferta era tentadora, pero me acordé de mis hijos.

Esto ocurrió pocos años después de que terminara la guerra de Vietnam. Las heridas aún estaban abiertas. Había familiares y novias que habían perdido a sus seres queridos y seguían sumidos en el duelo; algunos sentían amargura ante lo absurdo de su pérdida. Me contaron sus historias. Recuerdo especialmente a un exsoldado llamado Frank, marcado por lo que había hecho y visto durante la guerra, quien decía sentirse como si estuviera despertando de una pesadilla; su caso me recordó a Edith, de *Chapter House*, una superviviente de un campo de concentración de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; ambos oprimidos por su propia oscuridad.

Escuchar aquellos relatos me sacó del estado de autocompasión en el que me encontraba. Sin embargo, fue la valoración que hicieron de mi trabajo lo que me conectó con algo inesperado y mucho más importante que la grata confirmación de que iba por buen camino. El segundo factor que contribuyó a mi transformación fue, en apariencia, un estímulo para el ego. El retiro se desarrollaba en silencio; incluso nuestra salida a la playa había transcurrido en silencio, más o menos. Durante ese tiempo, diversas personas se acercaron para decirme cuánto se estaban beneficiando del trabajo corporal. Entre ellas, un hombre mayor de aspecto distinguido —que en su día había sido la imagen de la marca de tabaco Marlborough y ahora dirigía su propia agencia de publicidad— se ofreció a ser mi representante y hacerme ganar muchísimo dinero si decidía quedarme en California. La oferta era tentadora, pero me acordé de mis hijos.

Esto ocurrió pocos años después de que terminara la guerra de Vietnam. Las heridas aún estaban abiertas. Había familiares y novias que habían perdido a sus seres queridos y seguían sumidos en el duelo; algunos sentían amargura ante lo absurdo de su pérdida. Me contaron sus historias. Recuerdo especialmente a un exmarine llamado Frank, marcado por lo que había hecho y visto durante la guerra, quien decía sentirse como si estuviera despertando de una pesadilla; su caso me recordó a Edith, de *Chapter House*, una superviviente de un campo de concentración de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; ambos oprimidos por su propia oscuridad.

Escuchar aquellos relatos me sacó del estado de autocompasión en el que me encontraba. Sin embargo, fue la valoración que hicieron de mi trabajo lo que me conectó con algo inesperado y mucho más importante que el simple agradecimiento o la grata confirmación de que iba por buen camino. Al escuchar tanto dolor, viví una compasión mas profunda que nunca antes - quizás debido a mi estado tan frágil - y comprendí con una claridad fulminante cuál era el propósito de mi vida: contribuir a la sanación lo mejor que pude. Podría incluso decir que, hasta entonces, desconocía lo que realmente significaba tener un sentido de propósito. Años más tarde descubrí el libro de Viktor Frankl *El hombre en busca de sentido*, una obra que profundiza en este tema. Sin exagerar, todas aquellas preguntas existenciales sobre el «porqué» y el «para qué» que había albergado durante gran parte de mi juventud empezaron a perder importancia. La sensación de absurdo que me había llenado de dudas dio paso a un cambio en mi corazón y conecte con algo sencillo, estable y enriquecedor para la vida.

Lo tercero que me sucedió en Gualala fue duro para mi autoestima y, sin embargo, agradezco que ocurriera. Sucedió cuando Dhiravamsa se marchó —la víspera de la conclusión oficial del curso— para impartir una conferencia en la costa este. A month in Northern California

In a previous chapter I mentioned that I had a breakdown at the end of the 1970’s. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, it was inevitable. I can now see all the factors that contributed to it. I use the word breakdown with care because I don’t want to exaggerate what happened. I could merely describe that time in my life as turmoil. Yet it was more than just a moment of crisis, or self-doubt, or emotional confusion, all of those for sure but more. Since then, I have accompanied many people in their breakdowns, from grief, separation, exhaustion, failure, post traumatic stress disorder and so on - every one of them unique. But they also shared common features, the main one being the sense of fragmentation that makes it impossible to go on with business as usual. Call it madness. Whoever has been through this will understand.

It would take a whole volume to go into the details of what happened in my collapse, and maybe I will find the energy and the motivation to do so one day. But for now, I will limit myself to the relevance it had on my evolution as a teacher. It included no longer wanting to sit in front of people spewing out the same formulas, being expected to deliver, being supportive, fixing people’s problems, trying to be someone I wasn’t. And there were also serious personal issues that had come up in my marriage linked closely to the fact that I now spent a lot of time out there in the public eye, not just a husband and a father but someone shared with others.

‘…Everybody sees you’re blown apart. Everybody hears the wind blow.’ This line from Paul Simon’s song ‘Graceland’ just about sums it up.

For a few months I walked away from everything.

In the Summer of 1980 Dhiravamsa, who was living in California at the time and had a big following in Berkeley, sent me a letter and a plane ticket for me to go over to help him with a month long retreat he was about to do. I think he had heard about what was going on with me. In any case, his tone was insistent and there was also the ticket. Going to California held no temptation for me in the state that I was. In fact, I was hiding away on an old friend’s farm in central France when I received the letter, forwarded from Chapter House. But after all he had done for me, I felt that I could not let him down.

It would take another volume to describe my first trip to America, and the experience of being in that vast country, totally new and yet familiar in so many ways through the films and the music I had known growing up. After three days in the Bay Area of San Francisco I was in Gualala, North California with a large group of people I had never met before. Dhiravamsa told me that most of them were familiar with Yoga and Tai Chi and Ch’i Gung and other forms of body work and therapies but that they needed what I had been doing in Chapter house. In our conversations during the days we spent together in his place in Berkeley, having seen how disenchanted I was with the teaching, I’m sure this was his way of keeping me focused. In any case it worked, partly because the structured routine of the retreat obliged me to re-establish a discipline that was necessary to my recovery. But it was not easy, after being away for several months to find myself back in the position of catering, once more, to people’s needs, especially since this was part of the problem. I went back to what Dhiravamsa had told me at the beginning of our collaboration: Do what works for you. So that’s what I did, bringing the bits and pieces together again from the roots upward: grounding, being present – simple practices borrowed and modified from the martial arts and Ch’i Gung that I still do with people who have fallen apart in one way or another.

Three things happened during that month in Gualala that contributed to the transformation that took place in me that summer. All of them seem obvious now. The first one was a kind of revelation.

One afternoon soon after the retreat started, during the rest period I was taken to the nearby beach by a kind, gentle young woman. It was the first time I had set foot on the Californian coast. The beach was wide and empty. The waves were high. The sun was blasting down. Along the sand there were giant bleached logs. After a swim we sat looking out at the ocean and it was then that the words I had heard Dr. Winnifred Rushforth say to me three years earlier come back like an echo into my heart. (I think I wrote about my meetings with her in Edinburgh in one of the Substack series). It was in response to my question as to what it was that kept her going in her mid-nineties. ‘Receive, hold, pass it on,’ she told me as she made a gesture in the air. I took in the mysterious simplicity of her reply but thought no more about it until I was on that beach in northern California. As the waves crashed in, feeling the immense energy coming off the ocean, I truly heard those words for the first time, and they became a teaching that has remained with me till this day, and still guides my work. I felt them echo in my body, and it was as if a great burden dropped away. The effort and the stress of trying to do it right gave way to the possibility of being a humble channel of a source that was inexhaustible.

The second contribution to the change that took place in me was, on the face of it, an ego boost. The retreat was in silence. Even our outing to the beach had been in silence, more or less. But at the end of the first two weeks, we had a two days’ break when we could talk. During it all sorts of people came up to tell me how much they were benefiting from the body work. Among them a handsome elderly man who had been Mr. Marlborough (tobacco) in his time and who now ran his own advertising agency offered to be my agent and make me piles of money if I chose to stay in California. It was tempting but I remembered my children.

This was not many years after the end of the Vietnam war. Scars were still fresh. There were family members and girlfriends who had lost their loved ones and who were still grieving, some of them bitter at the pointlessness of their loss. They told me their stories. In particular I recall an ex-marine called Frank, damaged by what he had seen and done, who said that he felt as though he were beginning to wake up from a bad dream, and I was reminded of Edith from Chapter House, a survivor of a concentration camp in the second world war. Both of them oppressed by their darkness.

Listening to those stories shook me out of the self-pity I was going through. But it was their appreciation of the work that connected me to something unexpected and far more important than the thanks and the nice affirmation that I was going in the right direction. As I connected to all the pain I was overcome with a sense of compassion. It wasn’t something new but,I guess in the heightened state I was in, I felt it deeper than ever before, and it struck me with lightening clarity that this was the purpose of my life: to contribute to healing as best I could. I think that until then I was unaware of what it really meant to have a sense of purpose. Years later I came across a book that has remained important to me that elaborates on this theme: Victor Frankl’s ‘Man in search of Meaning’, Without overstating it, all those existential questions of why and what for that I had harboured for most of my young life began to lose their importance. The sense of absurdity that had filled me with doubt gave way to something in my heart that was simple, stable and life enhancing.

The third thing that happened to me in Gualala was anything but a boost to my self-esteem and yet I am grateful that it happened. It was when Dhiravamsa left, the evening before the official end of the course, to give a lecture on the east coast. He gave a long, inspired talk before being driven back to Berkeley, and all that was left to do was for me to conduct the meditation and the sharing session on the last morning before the group dispersed. This was how his courses were usually ended.

Not everyone spoke but those who did were open about their experiences and, on the whole positive and grateful. Then at the end of the sharing a woman who was an artist from the Bay Area said quietly but sternly: ‘Now your turn, Tew.’ As she looked around the group I saw many of them nodding their agreement. ‘We’ve all sensed your pain. But you have given nothing away. We like what you do but we don’t know who you are.’ Words to that effect. I remember feeling caught out, my cover blown, my disguise exposed. The pain welled up as I spoke and the tears I had held back all those months came flooding through and when I had finished somebody thanked me, Californian style, for ‘being real’. The artist told me to keep just being myself. I did not tell them that it was the first time that I had actually felt ‘real’ and how liberating it was. Image shattered, pain revealed.

That summer in California was a life changer. It wasn’t that I went back to England renewed, healed and ready to jump back in the saddle. The personal problems remained, and my dilemma about my role was not resolved. All of it would take time to sink in and the changes to take effect. But something had definitely shifted. There was a sense of emerging from a dark cloud. I will end with words from R.D Laing, the late ( anti-) psychiatrist who was another influence from those years:

‘Madness need not be all breakdown; it may also be a break-through.’ ( from ‘The Politics of Experience and the Bird of Paradise’ 1967).

El trabajo corporal

Cuando Dhiravamsa —tras dejar la vida monástica— me pidió que le ayudara a impartir clases de trabajo corporal en el centro que había fundado en Cornualles (Reino Unido), no estaba muy seguro de qué esperaba exactamente de mí. Ni siquiera había oído utilizar ese término anteriormente. Durante los retiros que realicé con él cuando aún era abad, le había hablado del Kárate, el Tai Chi, el Ch’i kung y el Hatha Yoga que practicábamos mi primera esposa y yo; le conté cómo estas disciplinas, sumadas a la meditación que aprendía de él, nos ayudaban a depurarnos tras los excesos de la década de los sesenta que ambos habíamos vivido.

Sin embargo, cuando empezamos a trabajar juntos en el centro de Cornualles y, más tarde, en Chapter House, no sabía cómo transmitir estas prácticas a personas que carecían de experiencia y mostraban poco interés en ellas; en parte, porque dichas disciplinas aún no se habían popularizado tanto como hoy en día. Dhiravamsa no me dio instrucciones, salvo la de confiar en aquello que me había funcionado. Sin embargo, del dicho al hecho había un trecho. Sabía que la idea de desarrollar algún tipo de trabajo corporal —y de ofrecerlo junto con la práctica espiritual— debía introducirse con tacto ante las muchas personas que acudían a meditar. Al principio, la reacción solía ser de desconcierto y, en ocasiones, de cierta resistencia. Me atrevería a decir que, para los budistas tradicionales, cualquier cosa relacionada con el cuerpo estaba incluso mal vista: por el peligro del apego y todo eso. Por cierto, recuerdo que, cuando me invitaron a enseñar Tai Chi a un grupo de monjes occidentales en la década de 1980, tuvimos que desplazarnos a un rincón apartado del recinto del monasterio; uno de ellos comentó en broma que esperaba que ningún tailandés los viera y pensara que aquello era una sesión de baile.

En cualquier caso, durante aquellos primeros años acertar con el enfoque supuso un desafío; mi objetivo inicial, como ya mencioné en el capítulo anterior, era respaldar las enseñanzas de Dhiravamsa de la mejor manera posible. Con este fin, puse énfasis en la consciencia y la atención plena, elementos que armonizaban a la perfección con las prácticas tradicionales de meditación *Samatha* (atención enfocada/ intencion) y *Vipassana* (atención plena). Asimismo, incorporé los conocimientos taoístas sobre el funcionamiento del cuerpo — incluyendo conceptos como el *Yin* y el *Yang*, el flujo del *Ch’i*, entre otros— que había adquirido durante mi formación con un acupuntor chino en Bangkok. Más adelante, el término «meditación en movimiento» daría título a mis primeros escritos sobre el Tai Chi.

Primavera de 1978. A través de los ventanales de la sala de meditación de Chapter House, observaba a Edith descalza bajo la lluvia mientras se desplazaba con gracia por el césped del jardín amurallado: una visión de ensueño. Era su tercera visita y no la había oído hablar con nadie ni una sola vez. Ninguno de nosotros lo había hecho. Para nuestra comunidad, ella era la misteriosa dama alemana cuya edad resultaba difícil de adivinar. Lo único que sabíamos era que se trataba de una violinista que había sido alumna de Dhiravamsa en los años sesenta en el Haus der Stille de Roseburg, cerca de Hamburgo, uno de los primeros centros budistas de Alemania.

Finalmente, preocupado al ver que se estaba empapando, salí a reunirme con ella en el césped. Nos sentamos juntos en el banco de madera, bajo una llovizna suave, mientras ella me contaba brevemente su historia: cómo sobrevivió al campo de concentración donde toda su familia murió en las cámaras de gas. Me confesó que nunca había creído posible volver a sentir alegría tras lo que había vivido, hasta que empezó a practicar el trabajo corporal. Gracias a ello, estaba descubriendo que la oscuridad que la había atenazado durante tanto tiempo se estaba disipando; su cuerpo podía cantar y bailar, como el de una niña otra vez.

Para entonces, tras la incursión de Dhiravamsa en las terapias occidentales, yo ya había realizado sesiones con un terapeuta Gestalt y participado en talleres de bioenergética que abordaban la llamada «coraza corporal». Había visto cómo los golpes de puño y las patadas precisos del karate, acompañados de la voz, podían liberar la ira y la frustración reprimidas. Había observado a personas descubrir aspectos de sí mismas mediante la práctica del «empuje de manos» y el combate libre controlado que yo había adaptado del tai chi. Todo ello resultó útil. Sin embargo, lo que sucedió con Edith me convenció de la importancia de la suavidad, y de cómo la combinación de respiración, conciencia y movimiento — en un marco temporal sin prisas — podía sanar y restaurar. Yo ya lo había descubierto por mi cuenta, pero ahora me sentía preparado para compartirlo con los demás.

Como nota al margen, nunca he olvidado lo que aprendí gracias a mi encuentro con Edith; incluso hoy en día, cuando escucho a alguien decir con total certeza que jamás podrá dejar atrás lo sucedido — por haber sido algo tan terrible y doloroso—, ella acude suavemente a mi memoria.

Poco a poco, mi trabajo fue cobrando forma a medida que descubría qué resultaba beneficioso para las personas. Sin embargo, yo era consciente de que no se trataba de provocar resultados ni de forzar nada. Realizar un ejercicio concreto no siempre surtía el efecto deseado. La liberación y la transformación llegaban a su debido tiempo, tal como sucedió con Edith y con tantas otras personas. Existía, además, un elemento esquivo que fui reconociendo lentamente con el paso de los años y que a menudo percibo hoy en mi labor de acompañamiento a los moribundos: a medida que el cuerpo se distiende y libera las tensiones acumuladas, entran en juego otras energías y se produce una interacción con una conciencia que trasciende lo material. Es algo a lo que he llegado a llamar ‘gracia’.

El siguiente momento clave en mi aventura con el trabajo corporal ocurrió cuando conocí al ya fallecido reverendo Fred Blum a finales de la década de 1980. Me refiero aquí a mi serie de Substack Hacia una nueva espiritualidad VIII , donde relaté nuestro encuentro y la frase que él me transmitió: «Rezar el cuerpo»( Praying the body). Esas palabras describían de manera concisa lo que yo estaba experimentando con el Tai Chi en esa etapa de mi propio camino: la conexión entre lo material y lo intangible a través del movimiento; el cuerpo como vehículo del espíritu; la oración como un acto integrador que abarca los tres niveles del ser; y la forma de Tai Chi como una danza suave chamánica. Esta noción de rezar el cuerpo abrió una nueva dimensión, no solo en la forma en que comprendía y vivía el Tai Chi, sino también en cómo transmitía la práctica. Lo que los budistas describen como el cuerpo material, el cuerpo vibracional y el cuerpo trascendente dejó de ser una teoría interesante para convertirse en una descripción de dimensiones de nuestra experiencia física accesibles mediante la práctica. La enseñanza taoísta sobre cómo lo intangible penetra lo tangible — y el acceso a lo intangible a través de la forma y el movimiento — se iba aclarando para mí. De hecho, yo ya había incursionado en este terreno de manera caótica durante los años 60 al consumir ácido, pero ahora la conexión era profunda y duradera, y estaba encontrando formas de comunicarla.

Llegamos a febrero de este año, 2026. Cuando visité a Marta dos días antes de que falleciera, su rostro irradiaba paz. Me dijo: «Realmente he perdonado a mi hijo». Según sus propias palabras, ya lo había hecho durante los meses en que la acompañé. En las sesiones de Chi Kung — mientras aún conservaba la energía para mantenerse en pie y realizábamos las prácticas centradas en el corazón —, ella fue soltando su carga emocional, aquellos asuntos pendientes que la oprimían. El principal de ellos era su hijo, quien años atrás había sido adicto a las drogas y, con su comportamiento destructivo, estuvo a punto de arruinar la vida de sus familiares. Habían perdido el contacto. Para cuando él se enteró de que ella se estaba muriendo, ya llevaba muchos años limpio. Yo estuve presente cuando finalmente se reconciliaron, entre lágrimas, junto a su lecho. Sin embargo, allí tumbada en su habitación, ella me confesaba que aquel perdón había sido incompleto. «El dolor que él nos causó seguía alojado en mi cuerpo», me dijo. «La ira formaba parte del cáncer». Fue al admitir todo esto y permitir que los tejidos conectivos que sostenían su frágil cuerpo liberaran el dolor hacia el espacio infinito que la rodeaba —un espacio que ella no sentía necesidad de nombrar— y con eso experimentó una profunda liberación; aquel perdón que le trajo sanación en la última etapa de su proceso de transición.

.Sigo considerando un gran misterio la capacidad del cuerpo para albergar el dolor y, al mismo tiempo, liberarlo hasta el último momento. Hace poco presencié el nacimiento de mi séptima nieta: ese extraordinario tránsito a través del túnel hacia este mundo, el primer llanto, los dedos abriéndose al espacio, el comienzo de su aventura.

Bodywork

When I was asked by Dhiravamsa, after he left the monkhood, to help him with teaching Body Work at the centre he had set up in Cornwall, UK, I was not really sure what he needed from me. I had not even heard the term used before. During the retreats that I did with him while he was still an abbot, I had told him about the Karate, the Tai Chi, the Ch’i Kung, and the Hatha Yoga that my first wife and I were doing and how, together with the meditation that I was learning from him, these disciplines were helping us to clean up after the excesses of the 60’s that we had both been through.

But when we started to work together in the centre in Cornwall and then, later in Chapter House, I was not sure how to share these practices with people who had no experience and little interest in them, partly because these disciplines had not yet become as commonplace as they are today. Dhiravamsa gave me no instructions, apart from telling me to trust in what had worked for me. But this was easier said than done. I knew that the idea of constructing some form of body work, and offering it alongside spiritual practice was going to have to be introduced skilfully to many who came principally for the meditation. At first there was often bemusement and sometimes a little resistance. I’d go so far as to say that for traditional Buddhists anything to do with the body was even slightly frowned upon: the danger of attachment and all that. Incidentally, when I was invited to teach Tai Ch’i to a group of western monks in the 1980’s I recall that we had to go to a discreet corner of the grounds of their monastery and one of them jokingly told me that he hoped no Thais were going to see them and think that this was a dancing session.

At any rate, in those first years it was a challenge to get it right and my aim, as I said in the previous chapter, was initially to support Dhiravamsa’s teaching as best I could. To this end I emphasised the awareness and the full attention which chimed perfectly with the traditional meditation practices of Samatha (focused mindfulness/ intention) and Vipassana(full attention). I also included the Taoist insights into the workings of the body, the notion of Yin and Yang and the flow of the Chi and so on that I had picked up in my training with a Chinese acupuncturist in Bangkok. The term meditation in movement was later the name of my first writings on the Tai Chi.

Spring 1978. Through the French windows of the meditation room at Chapter House, I watched Edith in the rain, barefoot, gliding gracefully across the lawn of the walled garden: a dreamlike vision. It was her third visit to us, and I had not heard her speak once to anyone. None of us had. To our community she was the mysterious German lady whose age was difficult to guess. All any of us knew was that she was a violinist who had been a student of Dhiravamsa in the 60’s at the Haus der Stille in Roseburg near Hamburg, one of the first Buddhist centres in Germany.

Eventually, concerned that she was getting soaked, I went out to join her on the lawn. We sat together on the wooden bench under the gentle drizzle as she told me her story, briefly: of how she survived the concentration camp where all her family died in the gas chambers. She told me that she never thought that it was possible to ever feel joy after what she had experienced until she started doing the body work. Through it she was discovering that the darkness that had gripped her for so long was actually lifting. Her body could sing and dance, like a child again.

By then, following Dhiravamsa’s excursion into western therapies, I had done sessions with a Gestalt therapist, and bio-energy workshops that dealt with the so-called armouring in the body. I had seen how the focused punches and kicks in Karate, accompanied by the voice, could liberate pent up anger and frustration. I had watched people discover things about themselves through the push hands practice and the controlled free sparring I had adapted from the Tai Chi. All of it was helpful. But what happened with Edith convinced me of the importance of gentleness, of how breathing, awareness, and movement combined in an unhurried time frame could heal and restore. I had already discovered this for myself. But now I felt ready to share this with others.

A footnote to this is that I have never forgotten what I learnt through my meeting with Edith, and even nowadays when I hear someone tell me with such certainty, ‘I will never be able to let go of what happened, because it was so bad and so painful’, I am gently reminded of her.

Gradually my work began to take shape as I learnt what was beneficial for people. But I was aware that it was not a matter of making things happen or forcing anything. Doing a certain exercise did not necessarily produce the desired effect. The release and transformation came in its own time, as was the case with Edith, and many others. And there was always an elusive element that I began to slowly recognise as the years went by and that I often sense nowadays in my work accompanying the dying. As the body loosens up and lets go of the tensions it has stored other energies come into play and there is an interaction with a consciousness beyond the material. This is something I have come to call grace.

The next key moment in my adventure with body work was when I met the late reverend Fred Blum in the late 1980’s. I refer here to my Substack series Towards a new spirituality VIII in which I related our meeting and the phrase that he gave me: Praying the Body. Those words described succinctly what I was experiencing with the Tai Chi at that point in my own journey, the connection between the material and the intangible through movement: the body as the conduit of the spirit, prayer as an inclusive act involving all the three levels of being, the Tai Chi form as a gentle, shamanic dance. This sense of praying the body opened up a new dimension not only in the way I understood and experienced the Tai Chi but also the way that I transmitted the practice. The Buddhist teaching of the material body, the vibrational body and the transcendent body was no longer an insightful theory but a description of dimensions of our physical experience accessible through the practice. The Taoist teaching of the intangible penetrating the tangible and the access to the intangible through form and movement was becoming clear to me. I had, in fact stepped into this territory in a chaotic way during the 1960’s when I was taking acid, but now the connection was deep and lasting and I was finding ways of communicating it.

Fast forward to this year, 2026, February. When I visited Marta two days before she died her face was radiant with peace. She told me: I have truly forgiven my son. By her own account during the months that I accompanied her she had already done so. In the sessions of Chi Kung, while she still had the energy to be on her feet and do the practices on the heart with me, she let go of her baggage - the pending stuff that weighed her down. The principal one was her son who, years earlier had been a heroin addict and all but ruined the lives of their family by his destructive behaviour. They had lost touch. By the time he learnt that she was dying, he had been clean for many years, and I had been present when they finally made peace, tearfully at her bedside. But now, lying in her bedroom, she was telling me that the forgiveness that day was incomplete. ‘The hurt that he caused us was still in my body,’ she told me. ‘The anger was part of the cancer’. It was when she admitted all this and let the connective tissues holding her frail body together breathe out the pain to the limitless, unnamed space that surrounded her, that she felt the deep letting go of forgiveness that brought her healing in her final days.

I continue to find the capacity of the body to hold pain and at the same time to release it right up to the end a mystery. I recently witnessed my seventh grandchild being born: that extraordinary passage through the tunnel into this world, the first cry, the fingers opening to space, the beginning of her adventure.

Si te atreves

Esta frase sigue presente en un rincón de mi mente. Ha sido un hilo conductor a lo largo de mi vida desde que era muy joven. Podría aplicarla a todo tipo de locuras que he cometido a lo largo del tiempo: esa necesidad de poner a prueba los límites que marcaron mi juventud. En lo que respecta a esta serie —y a mis 51 años como maestro—, la frase surgió como respuesta a una pregunta que le planteé a un famoso maestro de meditación tailandés llamado Achaan Chah, cuando visitó Londres en 1977 acompañado por varios de sus monjes.

Para entonces, ya llevaba dos años colaborando con Dhiravamsa. A finales de 1976 nos habíamos trasladado a un lugar llamado Chapter House, una antigua casa rectoral en Wisbech, cerca de Cambridge. Era un espacio mucho más amplio que la granja de Cornualles. Nuestra comunidad de convivencia era más numerosa y los grupos que asistían a los cursos habían crecido considerablemente gracias a nuestra creciente reputación como centro de sanación espiritual que combinaba enfoques orientales y occidentales, algo novedoso en el Reino Unido por aquel entonces. En mayo de ese mismo año había nacido mi hijo, por lo que ya era padre de dos niños muy pequeños. No siempre resultaba fácil compaginar los distintos roles y exigencias. Afortunadamente, durante los primeros años en Chapter House había otras familias en la comunidad, lo que nos permitía ayudarnos y apoyarnos mutuamente.

En cuanto al trabajo, disfrutaba enseñando Tai Chi y Chi Kung, y aprendiendo qué resultaba beneficioso para quienes acudían al centro, personas de muy diversos orígenes y con motivaciones muy variadas: individuos que atravesaban crisis nerviosas o estados de agotamiento extremo, exadictos que luchaban por mantenerse limpios, personas en fases avanzadas de enfermedad, otras sumidas en un profundo duelo... Observaba cómo el Tai Chi y el Chi Kung podían contribuir a su sanación. Principalmente, mi objetivo era apoyar las enseñanzas de Dhiravamsa, quien estaba abriendo progresivamente las prácticas tradicionales del Theravada para incorporar enseñanzas del Mahayana. Por ejemplo, había empezado a poner énfasis en la Metta (amor benevolente) y en la figura del Bodhisattva; al mismo tiempo, compartía su entusiasmo por el trabajo junguiano con los sueños y la terapia Gestalt, aspectos que solían sorprender a sus antiguos alumnos budistas. Pero cada vez que tenía que tomar su relevo, me sentía como un novato. Aunque él me había formado y había aprendido las enseñanzas, las prácticas, los mantras y cánticos, y algunos de los rituales, no había tenido tiempo de integrarlos por completo ni de encontrar mi propia voz. Así que a menudo intentaba replicar su forma de enseñar y transmitir lo que había aprendido, lo cual, desde mi perspectiva, no funcionaba. No me parecía auténtico. (Desde entonces he comprendido la diferencia entre enseñar y transmitir). Su respuesta no me tranquilizó precisamente. Ciertamente no fue una bendición ni un sello de aprobación, pero tampoco una negativa rotunda. Dejaba la decisión en mis manos. O al menos así lo interpreté yo. Más tarde, cuando le conté a Dhiravamsa mi encuentro con Achaan Chah, él se rio. No le costaba entender por qué había ido; de hecho, él mismo me había animado a hacerlo. No hizo más comentarios, salvo decir: «Sí. Hay que atreverse». Ahora comprendo lo que él mismo se había atrevido a hacer: renunciar a las túnicas azafrán, a su papel como abad y al cargo de primer «embajador del Dhamma». Aquello conllevaba ser rechazado y duramente criticado, además de tener que convivir con todos los rumores que surgieron a raíz de ello.

Las palabras de Achaan Chah tuvieron, sin duda, un efecto estimulante en mí. Me hicieron reflexionar sobre aquello que no me atrevía a hacer. También agradecí la comprensión y el apoyo de Dhiravamsa, así como su paciencia conmigo. Sin embargo, aunque las cosas empezaron a cambiar poco a poco tras aquella visita a Achaan Chah, seguía sin encontrar la manera de asumir mi papel como maestro. If you dare

This phrase still sits in a corner of my mind. It has been a constant thread throughout my life since I was very young. I could apply it to all sorts of crazy things that I have done in my time: the need to test the limits that marked my youth. With regard to this series, and to my 51 years as a teacher it was said to me in answer to a question that I put to a famous Thai meditation master called Ajaan Chah when he came over to London in 1977 with several of his monks.

By now I was two years into my work helping my teacher, Dhiravamsa. In late 1976 we had moved to a place called Chapter House, an old rectory in Wisbech, near Cambridge. It was a much bigger space than the farm in Cornwall. Our live - in community was larger, and the groups coming to do the courses had grown considerably because of our expanding reputation as a spiritual healing centre that combined eastern and western approaches, something that was new in the UK at the time. In May of that year my son had been born, so now I was a father to two very young children. It was not always easy to combine the roles and their demands. Fortunately, in the first couple of years at Chapter House there were other families in the community, so we could all help and support each other.

As for the work, I was enjoying teaching the Tai Chi and Ch’i Gung, learning what was beneficial to those who came to the centre from all sorts of backgrounds and for all sorts of reasons: people who were going through breakdowns and burnout, ex-addicts trying to stay clean, people who were in an advanced stage of their illness, others in deep grief…I was seeing how Tai Chi and Chi Gung could contribute to their healing. Mainly I was just trying to support Dhiravamsa’s teaching which was steadily opening up the traditional Theravada practices to include the teachings from the Mahayana. For example, he had begun to emphasise the aspect of Metta and Loving Kindness and the notion of the Bodhisattva, and, at the same time he was also sharing his enthusiasm for Jungian dream work and Gestalt therapy, all of which tended to surprise his old Buddhist students. To me it was enriching and refreshing to watch this evolution and see the way he was expanding the whole teaching . I was trying my best to channel all of it into the body work I was doing.

But I was still uncomfortable taking on the role of a teacher, which happened whenever Dhiravamsa left to give courses away from the centre, including long stretches in the USA. I was insecure and very reluctant to take on the responsibility, The sense of authority that he exuded came easily to him, after all his years in the monastery as a meditation teacher. But whenever I had to take over from him I felt like a novice. Even though I had been trained by him and learnt the teachings, the practices, the mantras and chants, and some of the rituals, I had not had time to fully integrate them, or to find my own voice. So I was often trying to replicate his way of teaching, and passing on what I had learnt, which, from my perspective, wasn’t working. It did not feel authentic. (I have since recognised the difference between teaching and transmitting). At the same time, as I gradually began to realize how much suffering some of the people coming to us were going through, I felt that I was not really able to offer them much help.

It was during one of the periods when Dhiravamsa was with us in Chapter House that I took a train down to London to see Ajaan Chah. It was principally to pay my respects. I had already heard of him when I was living in Thailand, and I was curious to know what he was going to do in the UK. He had been invited by a Buddhist group and was staying in their Hampstead Vihara.Few people outside of Thailand had heard of him at that time so it was still easy enough to have a private session with him. I had not planned to ask him anything in particular. But as I sat in front of him, after the initial chit chat, the question popped up in my heart, out of nowhere. I asked him whether he thought I was capable of being a spiritual teacher, never having spent time in a temple as a monk, and being married with a family. I think he was slightly taken aback by my straightforward enquiry. I was certainly surprised. He stayed silent for what seemed an eternity, fixing me with his piercing gaze. What I remember is that, once the words were out of my mouth, I was eager for his answer whatever it was going to be, although I am not sure how I would have felt if he had laughed at me, and told me to go and get a day job. But, without taking his eyes off me all he said finally, and with a totally neutral expression, was: ‘If you dare’. With that our interview was at an end.

His answer did not exactly reassure me. It was certainly not a blessing, nor a stamp of approval but not exactly a negation. He was leaving it up to me. At least that was how I took it. Later when I told Dhiravamsa about my meeting with Ajaan Chah, he laughed. It was not hard for him to see why I had gone. In fact he had encouraged me to do so. He made no comment except to say: ‘Yes. We have to dare’. I realise now what he himself had dared to do, giving up the saffron robes and his role as an abbot, and the post of being the first so-called Dhamma ambassador. It meant being rejected and heavily criticized, and having to live with all the gossip that followed.

Ajaan Chah’s words definitely had a galvanizing effect on me. They set me thinking of what I was not daring to do. I was also grateful for Dhiravamsa’s understanding and support, as well as his patience with me. But even though things slowly began to change after that visit to Ajaan Chah, I still couldn’t find a way of embracing my role as a teacher. It was only when I went over to California in 1980 to spend the summer helping Dhiravamsa teach a big course in a beautiful centre in Gualala, on the north coast, near Mendocino, that I began to feel more confident and at ease with the path that had been chosen for me. By then I had experienced a kind of breakdown/burnout that I now see as a necessary part of my journey.

¿Por qué lo de «reticente»?

Un par de días después de publicar el primer capítulo, recibí un mensaje de uno de mis suscriptores preguntándome por qué había utilizado la palabra «reticente» en el título de esta serie. Es una pregunta razonable y tal vez otros se estén planteando lo mismo. Merece una respuesta y algún comentario al respecto. Así que...

En primer lugar, no incluí esa palabra como una broma ni como un gesto de falsa modestia. Empecé como un profesor reticente y, tras 51 años, sigo siéndolo. Ser profesor no entraba en mis planes cuando tenía 28 años y vivía en Bangkok con mi primera esposa y nuestra hija, nacida allí en septiembre de 1974. Después de siete años viajando de mochilero, resultaba cómodo y reparador vivir de nuevo con mis padres, con la paz temporalmente restablecida con mi padre, y dedicarme a trabajos esporádicos, como leer las noticias en inglés en la radio y ayudar a un viejo amigo de Cambridge a exportar artesanía, lo cual me proporcionaba lo suficiente para vivir. Pero al escuchar sus problemas personales — muchos de ellos intensos o dolorosos —, me sentía, por decirlo suavemente, poco preparado. Me esforzaba al máximo por conectar con lo que ellos estaban viviendo, pero no había vivido ni sufrido lo suficiente como para ser de gran ayuda. Por ejemplo, me costaba comprender el impacto que una enfermedad grave tenía en las personas, ya que hasta entonces yo nunca había padecido ninguna dolencia seria. ¡Ahora, por supuesto, la empatía surge con naturalidad!

Luego estaban las charlas sobre el Dharma que se impartían al final de cada jornada. Era otra de las actividades habituales de Dhiravamsa, algo que sus alumnos ya esperaban. Podía percibir su decepción ante la ausencia de Dhiravamsa. Una mujer había viajado desde California expresamente para asistir al curso y escuchar sus palabras sabias. Había pasado la tarde preparando minuciosamente lo que iba a decir. El resultado sonó artificial y ensayado, al igual que las demás charlas de aquella semana. Al finalizar del retiro, algunas personas se acercaron para ofrecerme palabras de ánimo. Sin embargo, eso no bastó para disipar la persistente duda de que la situación me superaba por completo, de que tal vez me había embarcado en una tarea para la que no estaba hecho.

Why the reluctance?

A couple of days after I posted the first chapter, I received a message from one of my subscribers asking me why I used the word reluctant in the title of this series. It’s a reasonable question and maybe others are wondering the same thing. It deserves some kind of answer and commentary. So here goes.

First of all, I did not slip in the word as a joke or as some badge of modesty. I started out as a reluctant teacher and after 51 years I still feel like one. Being a teacher was not part of my plans when I was 28, living in Bangkok with my first wife and our daughter, born there in September 1974. After seven years of backpacking, it was comfortable and restful to be living with my parents again, peace temporarily restored with my father, doing odd jobs like reading the news in English on the radio and helping an old friend from Cambridge export handicrafts, which gave me enough to live on. I was coasting along, learning to be a parent and still unsure of where life was leading me. I had tried my hand at writing since leaving university, without success, and I had vague plans to continue doing so now that I was more settled. In the meantime, since getting back to Bangkok I was doing T’ai Chi in the mornings in Lumpini park with Master Tang and going to Wat Po temple to study Chinese medicine and practice Ch’i Gong with Dr. Ch’u. Then, out of the blue, in May 1975, I received the letter from Dhiravamsa, my teacher inviting me to help him set up a centre in Cornwall, UK. I wish I had kept it because of its importance in my journey. But I lost it long ago. I have already written about how Dhiravamsa and I found our way to each other, in my Substack series ‘Last Encounters’ and ‘Inner Journeys’, and how I accepted his invitation, so I won’t repeat it here. But I will add a few details about my first efforts at ‘teaching’, which was thanks to him.

It was in December that same year in Carn Entral farm in Cornwall, southwest England, the centre that Dhiravamsa had set up with the financial support of a generous donor. Those attending the Christmas retreat included Buddhists who had been with his followers since he was an abbot, and new students interested in what he was now doing. It was a big group. The word had got around that he had discovered Western therapeutic approaches, as well as body work, which was my speciality. The day before the retreat started, as the people were still arriving, he announced that he had to go away. I can’t remember why or where. But I was to take his place. Gulp!

The course was a week long and conducted mostly in silence following the rhythm and the structure that Dhiravamsa had established. I was to sit on the cushion where he usually sat, ring the gong at the right time during the meditation practices, and mid-way through the morning and once more in the afternoon do some T’ai Chi and Ch’i Gong with the group. No problem there. But there were two moments during the day that involved interaction. One was just after breakfast when everyone did their private meditation and those who needed an interview would sign up to have a session with me. If it was a question about their practice, I trotted out the standard Buddhist answers that I had learnt in my training with Dhiravamsa. But when I listened to their personal issues, many of them intense, some of them painful, I felt ill-prepared to say the least. I dug deep to connect with what they were going through. But I had not experienced enough nor suffered enough to be of much help. For example, I found it hard to understand what effect a serious illness had on people, never having been seriously ill up till then. Nowadays, of course the empathy comes easily!

Then there were the Dharma talks given at the end of each evening’s practice. It was something else that Dhiravamsa did in his courses and what his students had come to expect. I vividly recall the first time I gave a talk: the atmosphere in that converted old cowshed which served as the meditation hall, with the cold wind howling outside and the people settling down on their cushions and then all looking straight at me waiting for me to start speaking. I could already sense their disappointment at Dhiravamsa’s absence. One woman had come all the way from California to listen to his wise words. I had spent the afternoon carefully preparing what I was going to say. That evening it came out stilted and rehearsed, as did the other talks the rest of that week. At the end of the retreat a few people came up with words of encouragement. But it wasn’t enough to take away the niggling doubt I had that I was totally out of my depth, that perhaps I had signed up for the wrong job.

A principios de 2026, tras 51 años dedicados a la enseñanza, decidí que a finales de junio me tomaría un descanso en condiciones. Llevaba tiempo anunciando lo mismo y, como era de esperar, mi familia, mis alumnos y mis amigos habían empezado a tomárselo con cierto escepticismo. Yo mismo me preguntaba a menudo si sería capaz de hacerlo. ¿Acaso el hábito de enseñar y viajar, sumado al apego a mi trabajo, estaba demasiado arraigado como para desvincularme? Y, por supuesto, estaba también la cuestión, muy real, de poder permitirme económicamente ese supuesto año sabático. El asunto quedó resuelto a finales de 2025, cuando calculé que, con mis ahorros, las ventas de mis escritos y los trabajos ocasionales online, podría dejar de viajar para impartir cursos, al menos durante una temporada. Pero lo que terminó de convencerme fue el consejo de varios amigos médicos: basándose en los resultados de pruebas recientes que revelaban un deterioro físico evidente, me decían que quizá había llegado el momento de darle a mi cuerpo un reposo adecuado.

Escribo este primer capítulo en Corfú, en un lugar llamado Casa Lucía, un hermoso refugio que visito desde hace al menos veinticinco años y que antaño estaba rodeado de laderas verdes y frondosas y densos olivares. Sin embargo, poco a poco el entorno se ha ido urbanizando y la isla misma se ha transformado debido al intenso turismo que caracteriza a Corfú. Aun así, la magia perdura si uno se adentra serpenteando por las colinas cubiertas de olivos que no han sido podados, sino que crecen majestuosos hacia el cielo junto a los altos cipreses, o si logra bajar por un sendero impregnado de aroma a hierbas aromáticas hasta una playa virgen y solitaria. Casa Lucía conserva su encanto inconfundible: las coquetas casitas, el jardín bien cuidado y rebosante de color, el viejo pino en medio del césped donde practicamos, y el enorme tilo del patio donde comemos que ofrece una amplia sombra frente al sol y cuyas flores, en esta época del año, desprenden un perfume delicioso y soporífero. Acabo de terminar la última etapa de mi ‘gira de despedida’, que comenzó a principios de la primavera en Menorca y que continuaba hasta ahora. Mucha gente, muchos viajes. Si hubiera sabido cuanto trabajo faltaba, quizás no me habría embarcado en ello! Pero al final fue una despedida necesaria. A lo largo de los años los grupos son familia extendida y se la debía a ellos.

El grupo aquí en Corfú era, como siempre, una mezcla variada de personas: médicos, terapeutas, profesores, masajistas, músicos y artistas procedentes de Grecia, España, Italia, el Reino Unido... Una de ellas me conoce desde hace más de 40 años, pues formaba parte del colectivo que organizó mi primer curso de Tai Chi en Cataluña en 1985. Ayer, durante la última mañana, me prepararon una ceremonia de despedida sencilla, conmovedora e inesperada.

Mi trayectoria —a falta de una palabra mejor— ha sido una aventura enriquecedora y, en los últimos años, quienes han formado parte de mi camino me han animado a compartir mis experiencias. Por lo general, les digo que, si buscaban fragmentos de mi historia personal, podían encontrarlos en los artículos que he ido publicando en Substack. Sin embargo, tras decidir tomarme este descanso y ante la perspectiva de disponer de mucho tiempo libre, me mostré abierto a la idea de escribir algo específico sobre lo que ha significado ser maestro espiritual, vivido desde dentro, por así decirlo: las contradicciones y los escollos, los desafíos, la responsabilidad, etcétera; todo ello mientras intentaba llevar una vida familiar convencional. Quizás esto resulte interesante, y posiblemente útil, tanto para alguien que esté emprendiendo un camino similar como para otras personas que se dediquen a lo mismo. Pero no esperes una cronología de acontecimientos. Será una parte más de este repaso fluido de mi vida, un intento sin pretensiones de dar sentido a los tiempos que he vivido desde mi perspectiva actual. Como ya he comentado en uno de mis artículos de Substack, una de mis principales motivaciones para compartir aspectos de mi vida es dejar algo escrito para que mis nietos puedan leerlo algún día, si es que alguna vez sienten curiosidad por su abuelo oriental y por lo que hizo.

Chapter I. Goodbye for now.

At the beginning of 2026, after 51 years of teaching, I decided that at the end of June I would take a decent break. I had been putting out the same message for a while and, understandably, my family, students and friends had come to treat it with a certain amount of scepticism. I too often asked myself if I was capable of doing so. Was the habit of teaching and travelling, and the attachment to my work too ingrained for me to disengage? And, of course, there was also the very real issue of being able to afford a so-called sabbatical in the first place. This was resolved by the end of 2025 when I calculated that with my savings and sales of my writings, and the occasional online work I could now stop travelling to give courses, at least for a while. But what clinched it was the advice I was getting from various doctor friends who have been telling me that based on the recent test results that showed my body unravelling, it was perhaps time to give it a good rest.

I am writing this first chapter in Corfu, in a place called Casa Lucia, a beautiful haven that I have been coming to for at least twenty-five years that used to be cradled by green, leafy slopes and thick olive groves. But gradually the surrounding land has become built up, and the island itself has been transformed by the intense tourism that Corfu offers. Still, the magic persists if you wind your way into the hills covered in olive trees that have not been pruned but left to grow majestically up to the sky alongside the tall cypresses, or manage to walk down a herb scented path to a wild, empty beach. Casa Lucia itself has retained its inimitable charm: the neat cottages, the well kept garden bursting with colour, the old pine in the middle of the lawn where we train, the huge linden tree in the patio where we eat, giving ample shade from the sun and, during this month of the year, with its flowers exuding a delicious, soporific perfume. I have just finished the last leg of my ‘farewell tour’ that began in early Spring in Menorca and continued right up until now. If I had known how much work was involved, perhaps I wouldn’t have embarked on it! But in the end, it felt good and necessary. Over the years, the groups become an extended family, and I owed it to them. Here in Corfu those who turned up were, as always, a varied mix of people: doctors, therapists, teachers, masseurs, musicians, artists from Greece, Spain, Italy, the UK…One of them has known me for over 40 years when she was a member of the community who organised my first Tai Chi course in Catalunya in 1985. Yesterday, on the last morning, they created a simple, moving, and unexpected farewell ceremony for me.

My career, for want of a better word, has been a rich adventure, and in recent years those who have been part of my journey have urged me to share my experiences. I usually tell them that if they wanted bits and pieces from my history they could find it in the Substack articles I have been posting. But since deciding to take this break, and with the prospect of having loads of time on my hands, I became open to the idea of writing something specifically about what it has been like being a spiritual teacher, from the inside, as it were: the contradictions and pitfalls, the challenges, the responsibility and so on – all while trying to live the life of a householder. Perhaps this might be interesting, and possibly useful, for someone who is embarking on a similar journey as well as to others who have found themselves in the same line of work. But don’t expect it to follow a chronology of events. It is going to be another part of my free flowing life review, in an unambitious attempt to make sense of the times I have lived through from my present perspective. As I have said previously, in one of the Substack pieces, one of my main motivations for sharing any of my life at all is to leave something behind for my grandchildren to read one day if ever they become curious about their oriental grandfather and what he did.

Me gustaría comenzar este último capítulo de la serie retomando los cinco puntos que propuse como pilares fundamentales de una nueva espiritualidad: universalidad, conexión, responsabilidad, sentido de propósito y práctica. Consideré brevemente dibujar un diagrama para mostrar cómo se relacionan estas cualidades. Pero, como nunca he sido aficionado a los diagramas ni a las fórmulas ilustradas, rápidamente descarté la idea. También existe el peligro de establecer otra receta fácil y concisa para explicarlo todo, lo cual, en mi opinión, socavaría el propósito mismo. Por eso utilicé la palabra «hacia» en el título de esta serie. No hay una obsesión por llegar al destino. Nuestro compromiso es con el viaje que emprendemos por tantas razones: curiosidad, dolor, miedo, amor, pérdida, una revelación profunda, una enfermedad grave… en un esfuerzo por comprender lo que hacemos aquí y las experiencias que nos marcan.

Alejándonos de la seguridad que brinda pertenecer a un grupo que comparte el mismo sistema de creencias e interpretación de lo que es y será —que es lo que ofrecen las religiones—, nos adentramos en una universalidad más amplia e inclusiva, basada en el reconocimiento de que todos estamos en el mismo barco, independientemente de nuestras creencias, y que nos unen los aspectos fundamentales de nuestra humanidad, sin importar nuestro origen cultural o racial. Reímos y lloramos, buscamos paz y consuelo, sentimos placer y dolor, envejecemos, enfermamos, perdemos a quienes amamos, morimos. El fundamento básico. La fuerza gravitatoria. Parece obvio señalarlo. Pero es precisamente porque olvidamos lo obvio que estamos tan divididos. Recordarlo constantemente es esencial en este camino.

La palabra que me ayuda a hacerlo es Ubuntu, del idioma bantú. A veces se traduce como “Yo soy porque nosotros somos”, el vínculo universal que nos conecta a todos, que influyó profundamente en Nelson Mandela y Desmond Tutu.

Podría suponerse que de este recuerdo básico surge un sentimiento natural de conexión, al menos con el resto de la humanidad. Pero lo que realmente sucede se resume quizás mejor en las palabras de Jean-Paul Sartre en su obra Huis Clos: «El infierno son los demás». Todos representan una amenaza potencial para nuestro pequeño yo, nos limitan, compiten con nosotros, nos arrebatan lo que deseamos o creemos necesitar. Este miedo al otro parece estar arraigado en nosotros. Es lo que alimenta nuestros dogmas y prejuicios. De nuevo, las religiones ofrecen una salida a este aislamiento y soledad existencial al brindarnos una identidad a la que aferrarnos. Pero esto significa que quienes no comparten esta identidad siguen siendo el otro, el enemigo potencial. El miedo se fortalece.

Si las guerras y los conflictos, tanto a nivel personal como global, pueden terminar, será a través de una especie de conexión que sanará esta dualidad. Esto implica superar nuestros miedos, y comienza con nosotros mismos, encontrando la manera de desentrañar los patrones temerosos a los que nos aferramos, y una forma coherente de ser que signifique que vivamos lo que decimos creer a través de nuestros pensamientos, palabras y acciones. Esto ya es un desafío. ¿Y qué pasa con los demás, que incluyen incluso a miembros de nuestra familia, nuestra iglesia, nuestros compañeros de culto? Aquí la empatía es clave. Según la ciencia moderna, la empatía forma parte de nuestra naturaleza humana y está relacionada con nuestras neuronas espejo. Diversos estudios han demostrado cómo los niños pequeños muestran empatía. Si se cultiva, tanto en el hogar como en el sistema educativo, esta empatía puede ser la base de nuestra conexión con los demás. En lugar de competencia y división, el reconocimiento de que las experiencias ajenas no nos son ajenas, sino que resuenan con las nuestras, nos impulsa a buscar soluciones para nuestros desacuerdos en vez de reaccionar impulsivamente.

La empatía se transforma naturalmente en compasión, el impulso de aliviar el sufrimiento ajeno, sean quienes sean, no solo los miembros de nuestro grupo o conocidos. Sin embargo, cabe destacar que no es una actitud que adoptemos automáticamente por nuestras creencias. Los budistas practican el Metta Bhavana para ayudarnos a cultivar la compasión. Esto surge del reconocimiento de que la compasión debe cultivarse constantemente para que crezca, y que puede perderse si no lo hacemos debido a la fragilidad y vulnerabilidad de nuestro ego. La manera más hábil de mantener nuestra compasión es integrándola en nuestro cuerpo, de modo que la bondad, el perdón, la generosidad y el coraje estén presentes en nuestras acciones y en lo que hacemos.

La compasión y el ubuntu están íntimamente ligados. Al afirmar esto, podemos comprender que es nuestro bienestar común lo que nos ayuda a sanar y que se trata de una cuestión que trasciende lo personal. Mi bienestar es solo parcial sin la sanación del conjunto. Contribuir al bien común es esencial para mí. La ira y el odio que albergue contribuyen al conflicto mundial, cuyo dolor y sufrimiento, ira y odio, a su vez, me arrebatan la paz. Por el contrario, el amor y la positividad, la bondad y el perdón que puedo aportar no solo tocan a los demás, sino que también resuenan en mí.

Esto es lo que significa la responsabilidad, y de ahí surge el sentido de propósito que puede sanarnos del nihilismo y la desesperación que caracterizan nuestra época. El libro «El hombre en busca de sentido» fue uno de los que más me influyó en mi camino espiritual. Fue escrito por el difunto psicólogo Viktor Frankl, sobreviviente del Holocausto, quien descubrió su propio sentido de la vida mientras estaba en los campos de concentración. Por mi parte, encontré mi propósito cuando comencé a trabajar en 1975 en el centro fundado por mi maestro Dhiravamsa en el Reino Unido. Descubrí la salida a la depresión y la ansiedad que había sufrido durante mi juventud. A lo largo de los años, he agradecido la inspiración de quienes han encontrado su significado y propósito. “Solo si ayudamos seremos salvados”, son las palabras de Jane Goodall, cuya compasión y conexión se extendieron más allá de la especie humana, llegando a los animales y al medio ambiente. Su vida es un gran ejemplo para todos nosotros.

Pero también he aprendido que la inspiración solo llega hasta cierto punto, y terminaré retomando el mismo tema. Lo que se necesita es vivir la vida espiritual, aprendiendo a abrir nuestros cuerpos, corazones y mentes para encarnar todos los valores en los que creemos, y aquí es donde las prácticas se vuelven esenciales: para conectar personal y directamente con la conciencia más allá de la vida, como la llama el Dr. Pim Van Lommel en su libro del mismo título, y para que esta conexión con lo trascendente nos acompañe en nuestro viaje hasta el momento en que dejemos atrás nuestros cuerpos: para sentir la amplitud del corazón que se mueve para intentar aliviar el dolor y el sufrimiento del mundo: para rezar el cuerpo y aprender a tocar y ser tocados con ternura, a celebrar, a bailar y a crear, y a conocer el vibrante mundo de lo inmaterial.

Que tu camino hacia una nueva espiritualidad sea fructífero.

I would like to begin this last chapter of the series by returning to the 5 points that I proposed as being the fundamental pillars of a new spirituality: universality, connectedness, responsibility, sense of purpose and practice.

I briefly considered drawing a diagram to show how these qualities link up. But never having been a fan of diagrams, or illustrated formulas I quickly gave up on the idea. There is also the danger of establishing yet another nice, neat recipe to explain it all, which, for me, would undermine the whole purpose. This is why I used the word towards in the title of this series. There is no obsession to get to the destination. Our commitment is to the journey that we embark on for so many reasons: curiosity, pain, fear, love, loss, a powerful insight, a serious illness… in an effort to make sense of what we are doing here, and of the experiences that mark us.

Moving away from the reassurance of belonging to a group that shares the same belief system and interpretation of what is and what will be – which is what religions offer – we touch on a wider, inclusive universality based on the recognition that we are all in the same boat whatever the beliefs we hold, and that we are bound by the fundamental aspects of our humanity whatever our cultural or racial background. We laugh and cry, we look for peace and comfort, we feel pleasure and pain, we grow old, we know sickness, we lose those we love, we die. The basic ground. The gravitational pull. It seems obvious to point this out. But it is precisely because we keep forgetting the obvious that we are so divided. Constantly recalling it is an essential part of the journey. The word that helps me to do this is Ubuntu, from the Bantu language. It is sometimes translated as ‘I am because we are’, the universal bond that connects all of us: the word that deeply influenced Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

It might be assumed that out of this basic recollection comes a natural sense of connection, at least to the rest of humanity. But what actually takes place is perhaps best summed up by the words of Jean-Paul Sartre in his play Huis Clos: ‘L’enfer, c’est les autres ( hell is other people)’. Everyone is a potential threat to our little selves, curbing us, competing with us, taking away what we want or think we need. This fear of the other seems to be embedded in us. It is what feeds our dogmas and our prejudices. Again, religions offer a way out of this existential isolation and loneliness by giving us an identity to hold onto. But this means that those not sharing this identity remain the other, the potential enemy. The fear is fortified.

If wars and conflicts, both on a personal and a global level can be ended at all it will be through a kind of connectedness that will heal this duality. This involves working through our fear, and it begins with ourselves, with finding how to unravel the fearful patterns that we hold onto, and a coherent way of being that helps us live what we claim to believe in through our thoughts, words and deeds. This is already a challenge. And what about ‘les autres’, who include even members of our family, our church, our fellow worshippers, our political allies and our foes? Here empathy is the key. According to modern science it is part of our human makeup and has to do with our mirror neurons. Studies have shown how very young children display empathy. If nurtured, in the home and in the schooling system this empathy can be the basis of our connectedness to others. Instead of competition and division, the recognition that the things others go through are not alien to us but resonate with our own experiences, and this would impel us to seek ways to resolve our disagreements rather than reaction and conflict.

Empathy flows naturally into compassion, the impulse to ease the suffering of others, whoever they are, not just the members of your tribe, not just those you know or whose ideologies chime with yours. But again, this is not something we take for granted as an attitude that we adopt because of our beliefs. Buddhists have practices called Metta Bhavana to help us cultivate of compassion. This comes from recognizing that compassion has to be constantly tended if it is to grow, and that it can be lost if we do not do so because of our fragile, vulnerable egos. The skilful way of maintaining our compassion is by integrating it into our bodies, so that kindness, and forgiveness, generosity and courage are present in our thoughts and action.

Compassion and ubuntu are intimately linked. By affirming this we can come to realize that it is our common well-being that can help us to heal and that it is an issue that goes beyond the personal. My well-being is only partial without the healing of the whole. Contributing to the common good is essential to me. The anger and hatred I carry contribute to the conflict in the world, whose pain and suffering, anger and hatred, in turn, takes away my peace. Conversely, the love and positivity, kindness and forgiveness that I can contribute not only touch others but resonate back to me.

This is what responsibility means, and out of that comes the sense of purpose that can heal us from the nihilism and desperation that mark our times. Humanity’s search for meaning was the theme of one of the books that influenced me profoundly in my spiritual journey. It was written by the late psychologist Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor who discovered his own meaning while he was in the concentration camps. I finally found my purpose when I started my work in 1975 in the centre started by my teacher Dhiravamsa in the UK. I discovered the way out of the depression and anxiety that I had suffered as I was growing up. Through the years I have been grateful for the inspiration of those who have found their meaning and their sense of purpose. ‘Only if we help we shall be saved’ are the words of Jane Goodall, whose compassion and connectedness extended beyond the human species to the animals and to the natural environment. Her life is a fine example to us all.

But I have also learnt that inspiration only goes part of the way and I will end by returning to the same theme. What is needed is to live the spiritual life by knowing how to open up our bodies, hearts and minds so that we embody all the values we believe in, and this is where having practices is essential: in order to personally and directly touch the consciousness beyond life as Dr. Pim Van Lommel calls it, and to have this connection with the transcendent with us on our journey right up till the time we leave our bodies behind: in order to feel the spaciousness of the heart that is moved to try to alleviate the pain and suffering of others: in order to pray the body so that we learn to touch and be touched with tenderness, to celebrate, dance and create and come to know the vibrant world of the non-material.

May your journey toward a new spirituality be a good one.

El eslabón perdido

La frase «Rezar el cuerpo» me la dijo un cura protestante una tarde de verano en Inglaterra a finales de los años ochenta, después de que nos viera practicar la forma de Taiji. Ya he escrito sobre las circunstancias en una serie anterior de Substack, y sobre mi encuentro con ese ser humano admirable, un judío que había perdido a su familia en el Holocausto. Se llamaba Fred Blum, y puedes buscar información sobre él en internet si te interesa. Me tienta volver a contar los detalles de nuestro encuentro aquí, pero me resistiré a hacerlo, salvo para decir que la frase me ha acompañado desde entonces. Está directamente relacionada con lo que quiero compartir en este capítulo.

Si nos preguntamos por qué las religiones, con todos sus valores nobles y edificantes, no han logrado frenar la violencia que vemos desatada en las guerras que se libran en el mundo, guerras decididas por personas que se dicen religiosas, que van a la iglesia, al templo, a la sinagoga, a la mezquita, y que afirman creer en las enseñanzas de sus religiones, entonces es probable que la discrepancia entre las creencias y las acciones que se llevan a cabo sea un factor que podemos discernir claramente: es decir, la incoherencia que resulta en la muerte y destrucción diarias y el sufrimiento de hombres, mujeres y niños comunes en la búsqueda de poder y dominio. El problema no reside en los valores espirituales que las religiones defienden, como la paz, el perdón, la plenitud y la conexión con la dimensión trascendente, sino en que casi siempre se dejan de lado en aras de la conveniencia política y el beneficio económico. El reto consiste en asegurar que esto no suceda. Se trata de una cuestión urgente, según quienes nos mantienen al tanto del Reloj del Apocalipsis, iniciado en 1947, que actualmente nos sitúa a 89 segundos de la medianoche. Ante todo, lo que está ocurriendo, esta sensación de fatalidad, por deprimente que sea, debería impulsarnos al menos a explorar la posibilidad de evitarla y retroceder en el tiempo. Aún conservo la esperanza de que podamos, razón por la cual escribo esta serie. Pero esto requerirá un cambio fundamental en nuestra forma de vida, lo que implica un compromiso serio con cualidades como la empatía y la compasión, no solo palabras vacías. La pregunta, como siempre, es cómo poner esto en práctica, y la clave, creo, reside en el papel que desempeña nuestro cuerpo en nuestra espiritualidad. Aquí es donde residen las contradicciones. Pero también es donde puede echar raíces una nueva espiritualidad, y puede hacerlo si aprendemos a rezar el cuerpo para que nuestras acciones sean coherentes con lo que decimos desear.

El cuerpo

Nuestros cuerpos son organismos extraordinarios, compuestos por innumerables partes que deben armonizar para su correcto funcionamiento. Sin embargo, existen otras maneras de comprender el cuerpo, más allá de su función. Por ejemplo, la ciencia occidental moderna ha establecido que nuestras células vibran. Por lo tanto, no somos solo seres sensibles, sino entidades vibrantes. Esto fue reconocido hace mucho tiempo por los antiguos chinos, quienes utilizaban el término ganying para describir la interconexión vibracional de todo, no en un sentido filosófico, sino literalmente. En el chino moderno, ganying, “estímulo y respuesta”, se utiliza para traducir el término occidental inducción electromagnética (diàncí gǎnyìng).

Un descubrimiento reciente que refleja las ideas que sustentan la medicina tradicional china es la conexión entre el corazón y la mente. Xin es el término que describe esta conexión. En la medicina occidental moderna, según la Clínica Mayo, la conexión corazón-mente es un vínculo bidireccional, científico y emocional, donde el cerebro y el corazón intercambian información constantemente a través de vías neurológicas, bioquímicas y electromagnéticas. Los estados mentales como el estrés y la ansiedad pueden causar directamente problemas cardíacos, mientras que la salud cardiovascular influye en la función cognitiva y el estado de ánimo. Esta interacción está fuertemente influenciada por el nervio vago y las vías nerviosas cardíacas.

Otro aspecto de nuestro cuerpo que se está reconociendo es el papel que desempeñan nuestros tejidos conectivos, la fascia. En los últimos años, gracias a las técnicas de imagen disponibles y a la continua investigación científica sobre su función en nuestro organismo, la fascia se ha reconocido como una red de tejido conectivo crucial, continua y sensorial; un sistema orgánico activo y consciente que actúa como interfaz de la conciencia. Es donde se almacenan nuestros recuerdos de dolor, placer, miedo, trauma, alegría y celebración. Según algunos científicos contemporáneos, es donde interactuamos con las experiencias colectivas de otros cuerpos. Asimismo, en la visión que sustenta la medicina tradicional china, el tratamiento del tejido conectivo (Jin) era un aspecto importante para abordar el dolor.

Menciono estos aspectos que no contradicen nuestra comprensión reduccionista del cuerpo, sino que la enriquecen, ya que nos permiten experimentar nuestro ser físico de una manera que no está separada ni de otros cuerpos y formas ni de nuestro entorno, y que, además, nos permite conectar con nuestra espiritualidad en nuestra propia fisicalidad, sentir empatía y compasión en nuestro cuerpo.

Vibración e interacción

Comparto una práctica que es una versión de una antigua práctica de Qi Gong llamada los Seis Sonidos. Se basa en la conexión de nuestro cuerpo con los elementos que normalmente consideramos externos, en el mundo natural que observamos. En esta práctica, vivimos nuestros cuerpos como parte de esta ecología. El Liu Tzu Jue, como se le conoce tradicionalmente, consiste literalmente en cantar las vibraciones de nuestro organismo. Es una forma de lidiar con las vibraciones potencialmente tóxicas generadas por nuestros pensamientos y sentimientos, así como con las que hemos absorbido de otros y de lo que ocurre a nivel transpersonal: por ejemplo, el sufrimiento de la guerra y la violencia, que nos afecta, aunque no estemos directamente involucrados. Esta liberación es un factor importante para nuestro bienestar. En mi experiencia trabajando con el problema del agotamiento, la forma en que abordamos este aspecto de nosotros mismos puede ser crucial para recuperar nuestra vitalidad y salud.

Esta práctica también es una forma de nutrir y mantener las buenas vibraciones que necesitamos para estar bien y armonizar con el entorno elemental en el que vivimos: los árboles, la luz, la tierra, el aire y el agua. En este sentido, saber cómo sintonizar nuestra conexión vibracional con nuestro entorno sirve también como base de nuestro cuidado y responsabilidad hacia el mundo natural.

Reconexión

La separación entre lo físico y lo espiritual, entre lo visible y tangible (materia, cuerpo, sentidos) y lo intangible (conciencia, espíritu), es una visión común que ha llevado a que, en lugar de ser el preciado vehículo a través del cual podemos experimentar el espíritu, el cuerpo, asignado a un rol funcional, se convierta en el depósito de todo aquello doloroso y oscuro que elegimos no afrontar ni lidiar. Esta discrepancia, como recalco una vez más, es uno de los principales factores detrás del comportamiento esquizofrénico que hemos observado a lo largo de la historia. Lo que se necesita es una forma de reconectar el cuerpo y el espíritu, y esto no se logra mediante un enfoque filosófico, ni asistiendo con más frecuencia a lugares de culto, ni escuchando palabras sabias, sino aprendiendo a vivir nuestra fisicalidad de una manera diferente, aprendiendo a orar con el cuerpo.

2 prácticas

La primera consiste en desenredar los patrones negativos que albergamos en nuestros tejidos conectivos y que generan rigidez y tensión.

Con los pies paralelos y separados a la anchura de los hombros, inhala por la nariz y exhala por la boca, suave y profundamente, pero sin necesidad de coordinarlo con el movimiento. Levanta las manos a ambos lados de la cabeza y luego bájalas lentamente hasta que los dedos apunten hacia el suelo, con los hombros relajados y sueltos, la cabeza erguida como si estuviera sostenida por un hilo y la columna recta, pero sin rigidez. Al repetir este ejercicio, permite que tu cuerpo se relaje y se abra. El tejido conectivo, la fascia, se deshará por sí solo; los bloqueos se liberarán, el flujo de energía se potenciará y la elasticidad se mantendrá. (Esto es lo que se hace en el Tai Chi cuando se practica con fines curativos). Pero si el trauma y el dolor están profundamente arraigados, lo que ayuda es concentrarse en la zona del cuerpo que guarda el recuerdo y dirigir allí tu amor y compasión.

A menudo extiendo este primer ejercicio para centrarme en el acto de perdonar, con el cuerpo, porque, según mi experiencia, no puede haber paz profunda en nosotros si el cuerpo aún se aferra a la ira. Seguimos siendo víctimas de algo que pudo haber sucedido hace muchos años si el dolor aún permanece en nuestro tejido conectivo.

La segunda práctica se realiza en dos partes. Me baso en dos mudras taoístas clásicos que se utilizan para conectar con el Qi, o energía vital, y que algunos practicantes de artes marciales internas emplean para fortalecer su poder interior. Sin embargo, para mí, su verdadera utilidad reside en el contexto del aprendizaje de la meditación corporal.

La primera parte consiste en sentir la expansión del cuerpo hacia el espacio que lo rodea y conectar conscientemente con ese espacio. Comienza abriendo los brazos a la altura de los hombros, haciendo una pausa antes de juntarlos muy lentamente formando un círculo frente al pecho. La respiración es suave, las articulaciones de los hombros, codos y muñecas están abiertas, y los dedos relajados. Mantén esta posición hasta sentir la energía en la parte interna de los brazos y las palmas. Puede ser un hormigueo o una sensación de elasticidad en el espacio que estás abarcando. Luego, de nuevo muy lentamente, extiende los brazos y, junto con este movimiento, abre los sentidos y la conciencia. Permite que el cuerpo sienta esta expansión a través de toda su estructura, mientras liberas el tejido conectivo. Esto se puede repetir tantas veces como se desee. La sensación de amplitud que proporciona beneficia a nuestros tres niveles.

En la siguiente parte, la intención es integrar todo lo que está fuera de ti en tu ser. Comienza repitiendo lentamente los movimientos anteriores. Ahora, al abrazar el espacio, junta las manos, ya sea colocándolas una encima de la otra en forma de cruz frente al pecho, o en el gesto familiar de oración con las palmas juntas. Permite que el espacio que has abrazado penetre y llene tu cuerpo, corazón y mente.

Abrirse a aquello que trasciende tu presencia física, junto con la recepción de esa energía ilimitada, nos brinda un medio para vivir el espíritu en nuestros cuerpos y unirnos a él a través de ellos. Nuevamente, con estas prácticas no hay ningún sistema de creencias en juego, solo la voluntad de abandonar los prejuicios y la resistencia, y permitir que la parte sensible y vibrante de nuestro ser se abra a lo que ya está presente.

Ahora sólo necesitas amor. Y paz.

The missing link

Praying the Body was a phrase given to me by a Protestant vicar one summer afternoon in England in the late nineteen eighties after he had been watching our group doing the Taiji form. I have written of the circumstances in a previous Substack series, and of meeting that admirable human being, a Jew who had lost his family in the holocaust. His name was Fred Blum, and you can check him out on the internet if you are interested. I am tempted to go into the details of our encounter again here, but will resist doing so except to say that the phrase has stayed with me ever since. It is directly related to what I would like to share in this chapter.

If we ask ourselves why religions, with all their noble and uplifting values, have failed to curb the violence that we are seeing enacted in the wars going on in the world, wars decided and perpetrated by people who claim to be religious, who go to the church, the temple, the synagogue, the mosque, and who claim to believe in the teachings of their religions, then it is likely that the discrepancy between the beliefs and the actions that are taken is a factor we can clearly discern: i.e. the incoherence that results in the daily death and destruction and the suffering of ordinary men, women and children in the pursuit of power and dominance. The problem is not in the spiritual values that religions endorse, such as love, peace and forgiveness, wholeness and connecting to the transcendent dimension, but in the fact that they are almost always cast aside in the name of political expediency and economic gain. The challenge is making sure that they are not. This is a matter of urgency according to those who continue to update us on the Doomsday clock, initiated in 1947, which currently puts us at 89 seconds to midnight. Given all that is happening, this sense of doom, depressing as it is, should galvanise us at least into exploring the possibility of avoiding it, and turning the clock back. I still hold onto the hope that we can, which is why I am writing this series. But this will take a fundamental resetting of how we live, and this involves a serious commitment to qualities such as empathy and compassion, not just paying lip service to them. The question, as always, is how to put this into practice, and the key to this, I believe, lies in the role that our bodies play in our spirituality. This is where the contradictions are found. But it is also where a new spirituality can take root, and it can do so if we can learn to pray the body so that our actions are coherent with what we claim to wish for.

The body

Our bodies are extraordinary organisms consisting of so many parts that have to come together for it to keep working properly. But there are other ways of understanding the body apart from the function. For example, it has been established by modern western science, that our cells vibrate. So we are not just sentient beings, but vibrant entities. This was acknowledged long ago by the ancient Chinese who used the term ganying to describe the vibrational interconnectedness of everything, not in a philosophical sense but quite literally. In modern Chinese ganying, “stimulus and response” is used to translate the western term electromagnetic induction, (diàncí gǎnyìng).

A recent discovery that reflects the insights found in the vision that underpins Traditional Chinese medicine is the link between the heart and the mind. Xin is the term for this. In modern western medicine, according to the Mayo clinic the heart-mind connection is a bidirectional, scientific, and emotional link where the brain and heart constantly exchange information through neurological, biochemical, and electromagnetic pathways. Mental states like stress and anxiety can directly cause heart issues, while cardiovascular health impacts cognitive function and mood. This interaction is heavily influenced by the vagus nerve and cardiac nerve pathways.

Another aspect of our bodies that is being recognised is the role that our connective tissues, the fascia play. In recent years, with the imaging made available and the ongoing scientific investigation into its function in our organism, the fascia has become recognized as a crucial, continuous, and sensory connective tissue network, an active organ system that is conscious and that acts as an interface for consciousness. It is where our memories of pain, pleasure, fear, trauma, joy and celebration are stored. It is, according to some contemporary scientists, where we interact with the collective experiences of other bodies. Again, in the vision that underpins traditional Chinese medicine, the treatment of the connective tissue (Jin) was an important aspect dealing with pain.

I mention these aspects above that do not contradict our reductivist understanding of the our bodies, but enrich it, because they allow us to experience our physical selves in a way that is not separate either from other bodies and forms nor from our surroundings, and that, furthermore, allow us to connect to our spirituality in our very physicality, to feel empathy and compassion in our bodies.

Vibration and interaction

There is a practice that I share that is a version of an ancient Qi Gong practice called the Six sounds. It is based on the connection that our bodies have to the elements that we normally think of as being outside of us, in the natural world that we observe. But in this practice, we are living our bodies as part of this ecology. The Liu Tzu Jue, as it is traditionally called, is literally to do with singing the vibrations in our organism. It is a way of dealing with the potentially toxic vibrations generated by our thoughts and feelings, as well as those we have absorbed from others and from what is happening on the transpersonal level: for example, the suffering from war and violence which affect us even though we are not directly involved. This release is an important factor of our well-being. In my experience of working with the problem of burnout, the way that we deal with this aspect of ourselves can be crucial to recovering our vitality and health.

The practice is also a way of nurturing and maintaining the good vibrations that we need to stay well, and to harmonize with the elemental environment in which we live, the trees, the light, the earth, the air and water. In this respect, knowing how to attune our vibrational connection to our surroundings, also serves as the foundation of our care and responsibility for the natural world.

Reconnection

The separation between physical and spiritual, between the visible and tangible (matter, body, senses) and the intangible (consciousness, spirit), is a commonly held view that has meant that instead of being the precious vehicle through which we can experience the spirit, the body, assigned to a functional role, is the repository of all the painful, dark stuff that we chose not to confront or deal with. This discrepancy, as I emphasize yet again, is one of the main factors behind the schizophrenic behaviour we have seen throughout our history. What is needed is a way to reconnect the body and the spirit, and this is done not through adopting a philosophical approach, or going more often to places of worship, or hearing wise words, but through learning to live our physicality in a different way, learning how to pray the body.

2 practices

The first is to do with disentangling the negative patterns that we hold in our connective tissues and that create rigidity and tension.

With the feet parallel and shoulder width apart breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, gently and deeply but no need to coordinate it with the movement. Lift your hands up to both sides of your head and then bring them down slowly until the fingers point down to the ground, the shoulders relaxed and dropped, the head upright as though held by a thread, the spine straight but not stiff. As you keep repeating this allow your body to soften and open. The connective tissue, the fascia will do the work of unravelling by itself; blockages will release, the flow of energy will be enhanced and elasticity maintained. (This what you do in Taiji when it is practised for healing purposes). But if the trauma and pain is deeply embedded then what helps is to focus on the area of the body that holds the memory and direct your loving kindness there.

I often extend this first practice to focus on the act of forgiving, with the body, because in my experience there can be no deep peace in us if the body is still holding onto its anger. We continue to be victims of something that may have happened many years ago if the pain of it is still stuck in our connective tissue.

The second practice is done in two parts. I draw on two classic Daoist mudras used to connect with the Qi, or vital energy, and used by some practitioners of internal martial arts to build up their internal power. But to me it is in the context of learning how to pray the body that they are truly useful.

The first part is to feel the expansion of your body into the space that surrounds it and to consciously connect to that space. Begin by opening the arms out wide at shoulder height, pausing before very slowly bringing them in to form a circle in front of your chest. The breathing is soft, the joints in the shoulders, elbows and wrists are open, the fingers relaxed. Hold this position until there is a sensation of the energy in the inner arms and the palms. This may be a tingling or a feeling of elasticity in the space you are embracing. Then, again very slowly, spread the arms out and along with this movement open the senses and your consciousness. Let the body feel this expansion through its whole structure, as you release the connective tissue. This can be repeated as many times as you like. The sense of spaciousness that it brings is beneficial to all our three levels.

In the next part the intention is to include all that is outside of you into your being. Begin by slowly repeating the previous movements. But now when you embrace the space touch your hands together either by placing one on top of the other in an x shaped cross in front of the chest, or in the familiar gesture of prayer with the palms together. Allow the space that you have embraced to penetrate and to fill the body, heart and mind.

The opening out to that which transcends your physical presence, combined with the receiving of that boundless energy, gives us a means of living the spirit in our bodies and to join with the spirit through our bodies. Again, with these practices there is no belief system in operation, just the willingness to drop the prejudices and resistance and allow the sentient, vibrant part of our being to open up to what is already there.

Now love is all you need. And peace

Idealmente, pasaría directamente del último capítulo y de las prácticas de respiración del corazón al tema de cómo cultivar la empatía y la compasión que nos dan la base para vivir una buena vida: no hacernos daño a nosotros mismos ni a los demás ni al medio ambiente; comprometernos con el bienestar de todos los seres sintientes, incluidos los no humanos; contribuir a la sanación y la paz en nuestro mundo; celebrar nuestra riqueza común. En otras palabras, tener un conjunto de valores éticos que no estén dictados por una estructura de creencias externa ni por un conjunto de imperativos religiosos, sino que provengan de la conexión que experimentamos directamente al abrir nuestra conciencia y conectar con el espíritu.

Pero hacerlo sería precipitarse. Recuerdo que, en mi juventud, cantaba el mantra de los Beatles: «Amor, amor, amor… el amor es todo lo que necesitas…». La canción vuelve a mi mente de vez en cuando. La sencilla emotividad y la verdad de las palabras aún resuenan, así como la euforia que evocan. Pero aprendí hace mucho tiempo que poner las palabras en práctica no es solo cuestión de cantarlas y sentirse eufórico. Había asuntos que resolver y no había forma de evitarlos.

En el capítulo anterior mencioné que la conexión del corazón con el espíritu es vital para nuestro bienestar y que existen tres factores que la perturban o la rompen: el miedo, el duelo y el agotamiento. Es posible experimentar los tres en algún momento de nuestro camino. Si no se tratan, pueden causarnos daño a nosotros mismos y a quienes nos rodean. Generalmente, cuando se reconocen, se tratan con sustancias químicas para suprimir los síntomas que generan. Pero existe un enfoque más compasivo que no implica control ni supresión y que permite que la negatividad se transforme, se sane y se integre, y que el amor fluya.

Aquí abajo presento dos enfoques que utilizo para superar estos episodios difíciles, cuando el miedo nos separa y genera ira, cuando el dolor nos abruma, cuando el cansancio nos arrebata toda alegría. Ambos tienen que ver con la recuperación de la conexión con lo espiritual.

El primero se deriva de la segunda de las dos prácticas que describí en el capítulo anterior.

Sanando el corazón

Comienza de nuevo con la mano derecha tocando el pecho. Tómate tu tiempo para permitir que todo lo oscuro, doloroso y negativo aflore. No hay análisis ni juicio, simplemente un acto suave de permitir que lo que está ahí, lo que te quita la paz y el bienestar del corazón, salga a la superficie en lugar de seguir reprimiéndolo. Ahora, conecta con lo que ha aflorado con una inhalación corta y luego abre el brazo derecho con una exhalación larga y el sonido AĀH, deja que el dolor y la oscuridad fluyan hacia el aire y el espacio. Al final de esta exhalación, coloca la mano izquierda sobre el pecho y luego realiza un amplio movimiento circular hacia un lado con una inhalación larga. Mientras lo haces, conecta con lo que está más allá de tu frágil ser, nombra lo que necesitas para traer paz y bienestar a tu corazón, y con la exhalación corta y el sonido HǓ recibe esta cualidad sanadora en tu corazón. Luego repite la práctica alternando las manos y los movimientos durante tantos ciclos como necesites para encontrar la paz en tu corazón.

Esta es una práctica que he realizado a lo largo de los años con personas que experimentan un profundo dolor, ya sea por duelo, pérdida, miedo, conmoción, ira o agotamiento extremo. A veces hay resistencia a realizar la segunda parte. La gente pregunta: ¿cómo puedo pedir lo que necesito? ¿Quién me lo dará? Mi respuesta es que, para nuestra mente racional, esto es solo un deseo. Pero la clave está en que se trata de una práctica del corazón, y en el corazón todo es posible. Lo que sucede allí es en otro nivel de conciencia que trasciende los límites de la razón. Es donde el perdón es posible, incluso cuando no hay razón para perdonar, donde se puede encontrar esperanza y coraje incluso en la más profunda desesperación. Esta práctica no pretende ofrecer soluciones. No es una cura milagrosa. Pero, según los comentarios que he recibido de quienes la han utilizado, he visto cómo les ha ayudado a sanar, transformando la energía negativa, desbloqueando el corazón y reconectando con el espíritu.

Acompañamiento y acogida

Ya he descrito esta segunda práctica e incluí un breve video en mi serie sobre la muerte, explicando que, en mi trabajo acompañando a quienes se encuentran en el proceso de morir y temen lo que les depara el futuro, a menudo me piden una práctica que les brinda paz. La comparto aquí porque es posible realizarla, no solo en el contexto de la muerte y el morir, sino también para vivir en comunión con el espíritu. Es una práctica que he basado en uno de los mudras budistas que nos ayudan a cultivar la confianza. Como la mayoría de los trabajos del corazón, se realiza mediante una combinación de intención, respiración y movimiento.

La práctica consta de cuatro fases. Comienza con las manos cruzadas sobre el pecho (normalmente cruzo la izquierda sobre la derecha, pero no es importante). Luego, abre los brazos hacia afuera y espera hasta sentir la conexión entre el corazón y el espacio infinito que te rodea. Una vez establecida esa conexión, inhala profundamente mientras abrazas ese espacio con tu corazón, doblando las manos de nuevo sobre el pecho. Al exhalar, no te muevas. Simplemente siente el corazón y déjalo descansar, soltando la resistencia y el control. Al inhalar, conecta con lo que has abrazado. Al principio, esto puede resultar difícil. Deja que tu imaginación visualice tu espacio interior lleno. Con la última exhalación, abre los brazos una vez más y, al hacerlo, permite que el corazón se una al espacio infinito.

A medida que repites los ciclos, las conexiones, tanto internas como con el espacio que te rodea, se vuelven más vívidas. A veces, cuando practico con alguien, le sugiero que, al exhalar finalmente, conecte con la época de su infancia en la que era recibido en los brazos de alguien que lo amaba. Aquí no solo entra en juego la imaginación, sino también la activación de recuerdos arraigados en el corazón y los tejidos conectivos del cuerpo. Para los moribundos a quienes he acompañado, esta práctica permite que el espíritu abrace su corazón y su ser. El miedo puede transformarse en confianza. Esta es la aceptación de la que hablaba el Dr. Kübler-Ross: una paz profunda y una sensación de gracia. Pero, como todas las prácticas, esta también nos ayudará a vivir nuestras vidas confiando en que el espíritu siempre está con nosotros, acompañándonos en los momentos difíciles de nuestro camino.

Ideally, I would go straight from the last chapter and the practices of breathing the heart to cultivating the empathy and compassion that give us the basis on how to live a good life: not doing harm to ourselves or others or to our environment, being committed to the well-being of all sentient beings, including non- human beings, contributing to healing and peace in our world, celebrating our common wealth. In other words, having an ethical set of values that are not dictated by a belief structure outside of ourselves, nor a set of religious imperatives, but that come from the connection that we experience directly by opening our consciousness and embracing the spirit.

But doing this would be jumping the gun. I remember back in the day chanting the Beatles. ‘Love, love love… love is all you need…’ The refrain comes back to me every now and then. The simple poignancy and truth of the words still resonate as well as the euphoria they evoke. But I learnt long ago that putting the words into practice is not just a matter of singing them and feeling high. There was stuff to be dealt with and no way to bypass it.

I mentioned in the previous chapter that the heart’s connection to the spirit is vital to our well-being and that there were 3 factors that either disturb or rupture it : Fear, Grief and Burnout. All three may be experienced at some point or other in our journey. Left untreated they can cause harm to ourselves and to those around us. Usually if they are recognised they are treated with chemical substances to supress the symptoms they generate. But there is a kinder approach that does not involve control or suppression and that allows the negativity to be transformed, and integrated, and love to flow.

Here I offer two approaches I use to work through these difficult episodes, when fear separates us and creates anger, when grief overwhelms us, when weariness takes away all joy. They both have to do with the recovery of connection to spirit.

The first leads on from the second of the 2 practices that I described in the last chapter. Here we are dealing with the obstacles and the negative energy and vibrations they generate, within ourselves as well as what we put out.

Healing the heart

Start once more with the right hand touching the chest. Take time to allow all the dark, painful, negative stuff to come up. There is no analysis or judgement, merely a gentle act of permitting what is there – the stuff that takes away the peace and wellbeing of your heart – to surface instead of continuing to suppress it. Now, engaging with what has surfaced, take a short inbreath, and then opening the right arm with a long exhalation and the AĀH, let the pain and the darkness flow out into the air and space. At the end of this outbreath put your left hand on the chest, and then make the large circular movement to the side with a long inhalation. As you do so connect to what is beyond your fragile, wounded being, name what you need to bring back peace, stability, joy, confidence…and with the short outbreath and the HǓ sound receive this healing quality into your heart. Then repeat the practice alternating the hands and the movements for however many cycles that you need to restore well - being in your heart.

This is a practice I have done over the years with people carrying deep pain, from grief and loss, fear, shock and anger, deep exhaustion. Sometimes there is resistance to doing the second part. People ask: how can I ask for what I need ? Who will give it to me? My answer is that to our rational minds this is just a wish fulfilment. But the point is that this is a practice of the heart, and in the heart all is possible. What happens there is on another level of consciousness that cuts through the boundaries of the rational. It is where forgiveness is possible, even when there is no reason to forgive, where hope and courage can be found even in the depths of despair. The practice is not supposed to provide solutions. It is not some miracle cure. But from the feedback received from those who have used this practice, I have seen how it has helped them to eventually heal by shifting the negative energy, by unblocking the heart and by reconnecting to spirit.

Accompanied and Embraced

I have already described this second practice, and included a short video in my series on Dying, explaining that in my work accompanying those who are in their dying process and are afraid of what lies ahead, I am often asked for a practice that will bring them peace. I am sharing it here because it can be done, not just in the context of death and dying, but so that you can live with the spirit both within you and accompanying you. It is a practice I have based on one of the Buddhist mudras that help us to cultivate trust and confidence. Like most of the heart work it is done with a combination of intention, breathing and movement.

The practice has 4 phases. It begins with the hands again crossed at the chest. ( I usually have my left one over the right, but it is not important). Then open the arms outward and wait until you sense the connection between the heart and the unbounded space that is around you. When that connection has been made take a long inbreath as you embrace this space into your heart folding the hands back onto the chest. There is no movement with the next outbreath. Merely feel the heart and let it be at rest, letting go of resistance and control. With the next inbreath connect with what you have embraced. At the beginning this may not come easily. Allow your imagination to visualise your inner space filled up. Then with the last exhalation open the arms once more and as you do so let the heart be joined to the unbounded space.

As you repeat the cycles, the connections, both within and with the space around you, become more vivid. Sometimes, if I am doing the practice with someone, I suggest that when they open out with the final exhalation, they connect with when they were a child being welcomed into the arms of someone who loved them. In this way not only is the imagination at work but it is an activation of memories held in the heart and the connective tissues of the body. For the dying whom I have accompanied this practice allows their heart and their being to be embraced by spirit, which helps their fear turn into trust. This is the acceptance that Dr. Kübler-Ross talked about: deep peace and the sense of grace. But, like all the practices, this will also help us to live our lives trusting that spirit is always with us, accompanying us, and guiding us through the challenging moments of our journey.

En el capítulo anterior compartí una práctica para explorar la consciencia: enfocarse en ella, sentir su expansión y, finalmente, conectar con el espíritu, esa dimensión sin forma a la que se le conoce con tantos nombres. Que este espíritu toque e impregne todo es fundamental para la nueva espiritualidad que me interesa. Implica universalidad y conexión, no basadas en la creencia ni en la confianza en la experiencia de místicos de diversas tradiciones espirituales, sino una experiencia directa, accesible a cualquiera que esté abierto a descubrirla. Esto no se logra mediante el proceso cognitivo habitual del pensamiento. De hecho, nuestros prejuicios intelectuales a menudo dificultan el acceso a ella. La práctica permite que la mente racional dé cabida a lo que se ha denominado metacognición, un conocimiento incondicionado. Para quienes están convencidos de que la consciencia se produce en y por el cerebro, y siguen siendo escépticos respecto a la existencia de algo más allá de lo material y lo replicable en un laboratorio, la ciencia moderna ofrece ahora la idea de un campo cuántico de energía que conecta y penetra todo, incluyéndonos a nosotros mismos. La idea de que existe una consciencia más allá de nuestra mente y nuestra función cerebral es lo que el reconocido cardiólogo holandés, el Dr. Pim Van Lommel, denomina consciencia más allá de la vida. Este es el título de su libro sobre sus investigaciones acerca de las experiencias cercanas a la muerte. No es el único entre un número creciente de científicos y profesionales de la salud que, si bien no rechazan las extraordinarias capacidades de nuestra mente cognitiva normal, están convencidos de que nuestros cerebros podrían ser receptores sofisticados que responden a una dimensión inteligente y consciente que los trasciende: el espíritu.

Es a través del corazón que nosotros, como seres sensibles, vivimos el espíritu, esta interconexión universal, a veces llamada entrelazamiento. Considero útil mencionar que, en la medicina tradicional china, el corazón se considera la morada del espíritu en cada uno de nosotros, así como el portal a esa dimensión. Esto no es una creencia filosófica. La conexión entre Hsin (corazón/mente) y Shen (espíritu), entre lo personal y la fuente inmensurable, es vital para nuestro bienestar. Cuando se pierde o se altera, nuestra salud emocional y mental se ve afectada, y las manifestaciones son, por ejemplo, la intensa ansiedad y depresión que estamos viendo en nuestros tiempos.

La paz interior no es solo un concepto filosófico deseable. Es una condición indispensable para vivir bien y afrontar todos los desafíos que enfrentamos, tanto individual como colectivamente. No es algo que se dé por sentado. No podemos simplemente desear que esté presente. El corazón es sensible. Las circunstancias externas nos afectan: estar envueltos en un conflicto o una situación amenazante, perder a un ser querido, vivir en la adversidad y la miseria. Pero lo que nos ayuda a no derrumbarnos, incluso cuando parece imposible continuar, es la capacidad del corazón para mantenerse conectado con el espíritu. Esto puede llamarse fe, que no depende de creencias religiosas, sino de una energía activa que nos da valor, un sentido de propósito y significado a lo que tenemos que vivir. Lo he visto muchas veces en los barrios marginales de Bangkok, donde trabajé con personas que mantenían su bondad, integridad y generosidad en un entorno duro e insalubre; y con aquellos que se acercaban a la muerte, a quienes he acompañado en los últimos años: la profunda paz interior que sana, incluso al final de la vida. Esto es posible cuando la conexión entre el corazón y el espíritu está presente y es fuerte. Entonces, la pregunta es: ¿cómo se puede mantener esto?

Una vez más, la práctica es fundamental. Aquí les presento dos prácticas para quienes necesitan sentir esa conexión o restaurar su equilibrio y armonía si la han perdido.

La primera consiste en trabajar directamente con la energía del corazón y se realiza en tres partes.

Respirando el corazón.

1. Hacia afuera

Tras adoptar una postura tranquila, junte las manos sobre el pecho y tómese un tiempo para conectar con su interior, simplemente escuchándolo y permitiendo que aflore lo que hay en su corazón: alegría o dolor, experiencias vividas o lo que está arraigado en él. En esta primera práctica del corazón, no se aborda el contenido. Se trata de resuscitar el corazón.

Una vez conectado, abre los brazos ampliamente con cada exhalación. Para quienes cargan con una pesada carga o mucho dolor, suelo sugerir que, junto con el movimiento y la exhalación, canten una sílaba larga de AĀH, como un suspiro prolongado. Luego, al inhalar por la nariz en silencio, las manos vuelven al pecho

Permitir que el corazón se abra a la amplitud libera las tensiones y permite sentir la conexión con el espíritu.

2. Hacia adentro

Este es el complemento de lo que acabas de hacer. Mientras que en la primera parte la inhalación es corta y la exhalación con AĀH es larga, en esta parte la inhalación es larga y la exhalación es corta. Las manos comienzan cruzadas sobre el pecho de nuevo, y al inhalar se abren, formando un gran círculo para abrazar el espacio que te rodea antes de volver a colocarse sobre el pecho al exhalar. Esto se acompaña de un sonido corto: HǓ.

Al hacer esto, recargas el corazón con la energía del espíritu.

3. Hacia afuera y hacia adentro

En esta parte final, comienza de nuevo con las manos cruzadas sobre el pecho, inhalando brevemente y exhalando profundamente, mientras extiendes los brazos y cantas el AĀH. Ahora, al inhalar, regresa al centro del corazón y haz una pausa con las manos cruzadas durante hasta 4 segundos sin respirar. Luego, continúa con la inhalación profunda, describiendo un círculo con los brazos para conectar con el espíritu y recibir la energía en el corazón con el breve HǓ al exhalar.

Esta combinación de respiración, movimiento y pausa, realizada con suave intención, restaura el equilibrio de la energía del corazón y le brinda paz y tranquilidad.

Limpiar y sanar el corazón

Esta práctica continúa de forma natural la anterior, combinando la liberación externa con la recepción interna. El objetivo es sanar las heridas y promover la paz interior.

Comienza con la mano derecha tocando el pecho y permitiendo que todo aquello que perturba tu bienestar y la paz de tu corazón aflore. Puede tratarse de oscuridad, negatividad, dolor o sufrimiento acumulado durante mucho tiempo, o un conflicto o disgusto reciente. No se trata de analizar ni comprender, sino simplemente de reconocer con honestidad y amor las heridas, en lugar de buscar estrategias para evitarlas.

Cuando te sientas listo, inhala brevemente y, al exhalar, abre y extiende el brazo derecho. Haz el sonido AĀH como antes, permitiendo que todo lo que haya surgido en tu corazón salga con el sonido.

Al final de esta exhalación, la mano izquierda toca el pecho. Con una inhalación larga, dibuja un círculo en el aire y regresa al corazón. La intención es conectar el corazón con el espíritu, reconociendo lo que necesitas para sanar tus heridas y estar bien, y recibiéndolo en tu corazón con la exhalación breve y el sonido HǓ.

Luego, con otra inhalación breve, toca el pecho nuevamente con la mano derecha y comienza un nuevo ciclo, cambiando tu intención a medida que te mueves de un lado a otro durante la práctica. Generalmente, sugiero al menos 9 ciclos.

A lo largo de los años, he ofrecido las dos prácticas descritas anteriormente a quienes buscan ayuda porque han perdido la conexión entre el corazón y el espíritu. He identificado tres razones básicas para esta ruptura. El duelo: el luto por un ser querido que a menudo cierra el corazón. O el shock cuando la pérdida fue repentina o brutal, sin tiempo para prepararse. En ambos casos, ocurre algo que los científicos ahora reconocen como el síndrome del corazón roto. La energía del corazón se contrae para llenar el vacío. El agotamiento o el síndrome de burnout. Esta es la sobrecarga emocional y física que no se ha reconocido: el estrés acumulado producido por conflictos y contradicciones en el hogar o en el trabajo que no se han resuelto. Pero no se trata solo de cansancio. Con la pérdida de la conexión con el espíritu, el corazón pierde su vitalidad y la energía se agota. Por último, el miedo en todas sus formas, desde la ansiedad, la duda paralizante y la paranoia hasta el pánico; real, justificado o imaginado y proyectado. El corazón temeroso tiende a reaccionar sobrecargándose de trabajo, corriendo y latiendo rápido, mientras que la manifestación externa puede ser de violencia e ira.

En todos estos casos, he observado que la reconexión con el espíritu, junto con los enfoques psicológicos y físicos necesarios, puede ser de gran beneficio al tratar el síndrome postraumático, la depresión profunda y el agotamiento. Además, la armonía y el equilibrio del corazón, y la energía pacífica que fluye desde allí a través de todo nuestro organismo, constituyen la base de otros dos principios que he mencionado respecto a una nueva espiritualidad: la responsabilidad y el sentido de propósito. Esto es lo que abordaré en el próximo capítulo.
