The description of how Jenni Dutton does this is amazing:

Each piece took between 3-4 months to create and the process involved dividing the image into small squares. "I work directly from the photo to canvas in fine wooden threads, though both are upside down so I can focus on the visual elements and not be distracted my naked features. Areas are then masked off on both and I do not see the work in progress until at least 3 months in."

Slightly pants image quality sorry but this is by Chiachio & Giannone a couple from Argentina who have been living and working together since 2003. So many great pieces on their website.

Ok, this one is a fail. The exhibition has just finished, but I’ll share anyway as I think it’s really powerful work.

Brain Tumour Book - Leah Jensen

Here’s a bit about what the exhibition is about:

The exhibition features artwork that chronicles the artist’s journey through her recent brain tumour diagnosis and treatment.

Through intricate embroidered stitch-work and layered imagery, Leah transforms her vulnerability into visual poetry, offering visitors to the exhibition a window into her process of fear, resilience, acceptance, and hope.

‘I lost my context for who I was’

After treatment Leah Jensen had to come to terms with who she was and how she could move forwards after the ravages and mental scars of her treatment.

‘A stitched illustration of my sick bed pillow, an object that I had a complicated relationship with. It cradled my broken, painful, healing skull but also made me feel held down while the world carried on outside

I got rid of that pillow, I haven’t completely come to understand why though’

‘I chose this combination of materials because I wanted to reflect the feeling in the text, to feel uncomfortable and sort of gross, like chewing gum stuck in hair’

Pamí’wa artist. Dance Mask (Takü), 20th century. Colombia or Brazil - full-body masks are worn for the mourning, or ónyo (“weeping”), ceremony, a multiday ritual held approximately a year after an individual’s death. The masks represent the spirits of primordial animals who were created by the deity Kúwai at the beginning of time and were prototypes for real species. Made and worn by men, the masks do not come alive until they are danced, thereby creating a connection between ancestral and present-day worlds. Found here
