Franz Meerhardt had a complicated relationship with Ido.

The independent trading colony offered everything you could imagine - work, drugs, women, men - yet it also drained everything from you. Working as a freelance investigator was also difficult. Some clients vanished because they got in the way of the corps. Others - because Franz or his colleagues messed up. The latter didn’t happen often, and wasn’t usually his fault, but still affected his agency’s bottom line. So he started taking less glamorous jobs, like a time-sensitive contract for court summons escort.

“Please select a location,” the automated elevator voice said with a neutral tone.

Franz sighed and pressed the button for level 6 - Hydroponics.

The level was full of titanic structures that greeted everyone with a cacophony of mechanical sounds, the low hum of massive bio-reactors, and the rhythmic pulse of countless pumps and filtration systems. The air was heavy with the earthy scent of organic matter and manure, intermingled with the sterile tang of chemicals and sterilization agents. In large bioreactors, genetically modified worms were being mass-farmed, their protein-rich bodies destined to become the base for the Megastructure’s synthetic meat products.

Thank god I oiled the leg pistons, he thought as he exited the elevator.

The farm structures had a weird dimension to them - acute absence of the human touch. Drones of various designs, created for maximum efficiency and precision, tirelessly performed tasks that once required human hands. The drones toiled day and night, free from fatigue, labor laws, or personal lives. From a purely business perspective, the advantages were clear: higher productivity, fewer mistakes, no strikes, no workplace accidents. Corporations loved this, Franz found it eerie.

His destination was beyond the main farm sections. There was a small tech sector still occupied by humans. Known on other levels as the Fab, the area was full of holographic neon signs advertising everything from noodle shops and drone repairs to digital fortune tellers, brothels, and short-term loans. The faint aroma of star anise and soy sauce filled the air, emanating from bustling food stalls that served dumplings and yakisoba. He ignored all of that and made his way straight to the residential area.

Maybe some ramen after, he noted a vendor stand he tried before.

The locals, a bunch of Japanese people that abandoned their colony of Sagato, called this area Edo Yosai or the Edo Fortress. Franz wasn’t quite sure what was the reason for their resettlement, but he didn’t really care. What he and others cared about were their tech skills. Quite a few of the so-called refugees were former members of Sagato’s Artisan Clans, including his summons target.

He checked his comlink and pinpointed the housing unit. There was however, a rather tall and imposing problem.

“Good day, I am Franz Meerhardt, of the Odom Investigations. I am here to see Mr. Tachibana regarding court summons,” he said calmly to the man at the door.

Calling that thing a man was generous. It was a fully augmented, seven-foot-tall wall of cyber muscles with horns on top.

“So?” the tall man replied.

“So may I come in?”

“No.”

Franz took a deep breath. “Listen, I’m just delivering legal stuff. I’m not here to interfere with anything. Just doing my job.”

“No–”

“Who is it, Genpei?” came a female voice behind the guard.

“Some detective, Madame,” the guard answered.

“Move.”

Genpei moved to the side with surprising agility for his build. A woman wearing a red kimono came out. Dark hair bun with a pin, shoulders uncovered, and a smoking pipe that definitely did not have tobacco in it.

“Who are you and what are you doing at my residence?”

“Franz Meerhardt, of the Odom Investigations. Here regarding court summons for Mr. Tachibana,” Franz replied once again.

“Court summons? Has the Ido Corporate Council decided to force us to share our secrets by threatening to evict the residents of Edo?”

“No, Madam, as far as I know this is something to do with your… husband, I assume, and Sagato.”

“My husband is a very busy man and it would be a shame to distract him. I could of course come instead of him, but my time is better spent running…our business. Unless you have a warrant of course?”

“I …do not, but I am not arresting him, only delivering the summons and offering escort,” Franz said.

“How kind of you, darling, but we will not be needing any escort, the matter is too unimportant. Have a good day and take care on the way back,” she turned around and went into the unit.

Before Franz could say anything else, Genpei was already blocking the door.

“No warrant, eh?” he smiled for the first time and cracked his fists. “Guess you’re not entering, Mr. Detective…”

“You do know that if your boss ignores the summons, they will send someone less friendly?” Franz said tiredly.

“Then they will still have to get through me.”

“Fine, have it your way,” Franz turned away and went back to the market and food stalls.

The vendor he noticed before was called Ishida. He came to Ido with the first wave of the refugees and tried setting up a workshop, however he just wasn’t good enough. Funnily enough he turned out to be a much better chef than a tech guy.

He stood behind the counter, in a traditional hachimaki headband and apron, preparing a variety of dishes ranging from yakitori skewers and tempura to sashimi and hearty nabe hot pots.

“Ah, Franz-san, tiring day?” the chef smiled.

“Indeed, work fucks me every day for free and I have no say in the intensity.”

“Ah, then, as usual?” Ishida gestured behind him, where an already prepared portion of ramen noodles was waiting.

“Yes, thank you so much,” Franz replied with a smile.

“No, no. Thank you for coming over consistently.”

The ramen was amazing, not too fat and not overpowering in its taste. Franz could properly taste the noodles, the pork, and the vegetables. It was apparently basic, according to Ishida, but beloved by everyone in Edo.

“Can I ask you something?” Franz said between bites.

“Sure, only if it is not my recipe,” the man laughed.

“Hah, I doubt I would be able to make anything as remotely tasty as your stuff,” Franz chuckled. “No, I was curious, do you know Mr. Tachibana?”

“Oh, from the Artisan Clan? Maybe I do, maybe I don’t, Franz-san,” Ishida smiled, but his eyes narrowed. “Why?”

“Sagato is looking for him.”

“Oh, that is…not good.”

“Why?”

When Ishida didn’t answer, Franz pulled out his chip and tapped on the vendor’s payment scanner. “Why is that not good, Ishida?”

“Well…Sagato is very…how you say, protective. The exiled artisans, they have skills, they have knowledge and Sagato wishes to ensure….its edge.”

“Ah, so good old market competition and lawsuits to stifle others.”

“Yes…but Mr. Tachibana is…stubborn, very stubborn, yes.”

“I see–” Franz was about to ask more, but his comlink buzzed with a contract update.

The screen read: ‘Court summons time limit expired. Delivery deemed complete. Payment processed. Has the escort service option been accepted? Y/N’.

He pressed ‘N’.

The screen updated: ‘Acknowledged. Court summons refused. Informing the claimant. Detective on-site to leave the area immediately, enforcement request sent.’

Well, shit, it was a set up, Franz thought and started to finish up his food and said. “Right, I’m leaving. You should probably close up.”

Ishida looked confused.

“The corps are sending enforcers to bring Tachibana in.”

The chef’s eyes opened wide. “Yes, I will close now.”

“Good.”

He noticed them as he was leaving the area and heading towards the farms and the elevator. Corporate enforcers, tall, their silhouettes harsh and metallic under the neon-lit skyline. Each officer wore a full-body suit of sleek, matte black armor, lined with luminescent blue tracery. Their helmets were faceless, giving them an impersonal and somewhat intimidating demeanor.

Scary fuckers actually get to fly in, and I have to walk all the way back, he thought.

One of them raised their hand in a non-threatening but firm signal for him to stop. The enforcer stepped forward, his posture rigid, an LED screen on his helmet flashing an ID badge with the title ‘Sergeant’ displayed prominently.

“Good evening,” he began, his voice a chilling monotone, modulated by the helmet’s speaker. “Detective Franz Meerhardt, right?”

“Yes sir.”

“Please state your business here.”

“I was performing a court summons delivery and am now heading back to office.”

“Very good, please be on your way. Do not turn around.”

“Understood,” Franz nodded and continued out of the area.

A few minutes out he heard noises of some distant commotion, but ignored them. There was no need to expose oneself to more danger. Especially with enforcers. They would probably storm the unit from multiple directions, so even Genpei wouldn’t be able to defend against them all.

“Turns out you did need an escort, Madame,” he chuckled out loud, “but I am already at the elevator and do not intend to die.”

Welp, hope Ishida survives, he thought as he pressed the elevator button. At least I got paid.

The morning light filtered through the ancient oaks, casting shadows across the weathered stones as Elyran emerged from the forest on top of a small cliff overlooking the eastern wall of Armst. Three hundred and seventy-two years had passed since he had last walked these grounds. Then, the air had been thick with the acrid smoke of siege fires, the screams of the dying, and the desperate clash of steel against steel. Now, birdsong and the rhythmic ring of masons’ hammers filled the space where armies had once contested the fate of nations.

He descended the slope toward the reconstruction site, robe sleeves rustling in the wind. But before he could pass the first cordon of rope and stakes, a voice called out.

“Am sorry, Master Yelf, I kannot let ye in without a permit,” the guard said, stepping forward with an apologetic frown. He was old - at least byhumanstandards - wearing the brown-and-gray livery of the Westmark Civic Watch, his halberd gripped more for balance than menace.

Elyran halted, raising a brow. “I assure you, good sir, I’m here purely in a scholarly capacity. I have no interest in interfering with your engineers.”

“Ordrs be ordrs, Master Yelf. Even Kouncil folk need a permit from the Kouncil official. Ken’t risk sa-saboteurs and whotnot,” the guard replied with a nod.

Saboteurs, Elyran mentally shrugged. Yes, with an indigo robe and satchel full of notes.

“Morning, Jergen! Is everything alright?”

The voice came from behind Elyran. He turned to find a woman approaching at a brisk pace. She was young - perhaps twenty-five summers - dark-haired with olive skin and amber eyes. Her attire marked her as a scholar or at least an apprentice to one: practical wool tunic over linen shirt, leather satchel similar to his own though considerably more worn, and most tellingly, ink stains on her fingers that no amount of scrubbing ever fully removed.

“Aye, Mistress Alastair, oll is well. Ye got yer permit this time? Master Yelf here doesn’t have one,” the guard said inspecting the parchment.

“Oh? Are you recording the reconstruction efforts?” the woman asked.

“I am indeed,” Elyran replied. “Though my interest lies less in the physical reconstruction than in what it represents in the broader historical context.”

“Very curious! I’m Myrin Alastair,” she said, extending her hand for a handshake. “Apprentice to Master Historian Thaddeus. I’ve been granted entry clearance for observational study of the reconstruction.”

“Elyran Moonshadow, of the Seventh Circle of Historical Studies,” he replied as he shook it.

Myrin’s eyes went wide for a brief second, but she did not say anything, turning to the guard instead. “If I sign him in as my guest under my permit, will that suffice Jergen?”

“Aye. If ye vouch for ‘im, I’ll note it in the log.”

“Thank you,” she smiled briefly before turning to Elyran. “I hope I’m not overstepping. You looked like you were about to argue your way into detention.”

“Not at all,” Elyran replied with a touch of amusement. “Your intervention is appreciated.”

“Of course, follow me, I suspect we share more than an entry permit,” she led the way.

He adjusted the fall of his indigo robe and followed her past the rope line. As they went further, the wind carried to him fragments of conversation, jokes shared between masons, the sharp commands of the guild overseer, and the complaints of apprentices struggling under loads of mortar. Their language had a tendency to shift over centuries - new idioms, altered pronunciations - weaving more threads in the tapestry ofhumancivilization.

“I need to meet a colleague for a small check-up, you’re free to explore the site if you wish,” Myrin said.

“A single elf walking around a reconstruction site with no supervision?” Elyran raised his eyebrow. “How scandalous.”

“The wars are long over, Master Moonshadow, humans are living in the age of peace,” she smiled.

“Fair enough,” Elyran withdrew a small leather-bound journal from his satchel and went towards the ruins, making unhurried notes. Age of peace. That phrase probably killed more people than plagues.

The humans of Westmark were rebuilding in the Concordian style, their hammers striking stones laid atop older ruins whose origins they probably no longer remembered. Beneath layers of ash and mortar, deeper foundations slumbered - remnants of a history far older than Human memory allowed. Cultural assimilation following military conquest - a pattern he had documented across the millennia. The quill paused above the parchment as he considered whether this represented pragmatic adaptation or a more foundational shift in cultural identity. Then his elvish ears heard Myrin’s voice from afar.

“Good find, Casren. The mural fragments suggest a hybrid style - elven curvature overlaid with Human iconography. Trade must’ve been strong here before the war,” she said.

“Perhaps, or it’s merely ornamental borrowing. Personally, I see prestige mimicry. Human artisans replicating elven forms to elevate their own craft. The style tells more about our past aspirations than our mutuality,” a male voice replied.

“Or it tells us that there was a real conversation through commerce. That there was a time when influence flowed both ways,” she pressed.

“Influence, perhaps. But never parity. And certainly never control. Look around, Myrin,” the man’s voice shifted as if he moved, “this ruin wasn’t the product of partnership. It was the consequence of dependence. We so easily forget that before there was a Concordance, there was the Onslaught. Who bled to clear this continent of the monstrous hordes? We did. The Human kingdoms launched the Great Subjugation. We died in the mud while the immortals sat safely behind their warded forests and the dwarves hid in their deep-holds, tossing us scraps of iron in exchange for our harvests. And when the land was finally safe, they stepped out and handed us a treaty. And we are rebuilding it to reclaim what was ours before we were charmed and taught to look upward.”

Someone is very insecure about their lifespan and history, Elyran thought.

“Taught to look upward? That’s a rather selective and simplistic reading of history, Casren,” Myrin said tensely. “The Great Subjugation happened. Our fallen deserve to be remembered for it. But that doesn’t grant us an exclusive right to that history. The Concordance collapsed because fear and pride took root - not because collaboration was a mistake. These stones, they’re what’s left of a moment when we tried something rare. Something worth trying again.”

“And yet it failed. Glorifying such failure only invites repetition. My position - and I say this without malice - is that history must serve the living. And right now, the living are human, cautious, and tired of deferring to a culture that lives ten times as long and forgets nothing,” Casren said with a smirk.

“We engage in a dialogue with the Elves, not deference,” she countered.

“Dialogue won’t protect us from irrelevance. Restoration of our culture is power, Myrin. The stories we tell through these walls - whose craft we celebrate, whose inscriptions we translate - these are political acts,” he replied and then lowered his voice. “Don’t pretend otherwise, dear colleague.”

Myrin paused for a brief moment.

“Then I’ll continue to choose truth over utility. Even if it makes me unlikable, colleague.”

“Doubt you’ll get tenure with your sentiments,” Casren replied coolly.

“Thankfully that’s not up to you.”

Silence. A hammer struck stone in rhythm with the wind, distracting Elyran from his eavesdropping.

Curious creatures, Elyran thought to himself, observing the humans laboring nearby.

He continued roaming around, sketching, making notes. The Human movements possessed an urgency that never ceased to fascinate him - as if their brief lives demanded an appropriate intensity of action. Myrin caught up with him some time later.

“Apologies, my meeting took longer than I expected,” she said as she waved him over.

“No need to worry, I imagine you’re far more preoccupied with research than I am,” he smiled. “By the way, if you don’t mind me asking, you didn’t mention your specialization.”

“Ah! My particular focus is on elven historical methodologies and their contrast with Human approaches to chronicling events,” she said proudly.

Elyran raised an eyebrow. “Huh, an unusual specialization for a Human scholar.”

“Perhaps so, but one I believe is essential if we’re to understand the true nature of the conflicts that have shaped our shared lands.”

She gestured toward the reconstruction. “This is the third rebuilding of Armst in six hundred years. Each time, our histories record different causes, different heroes, different villains - yet the cycle continues.”

“And you believe elven historical records might provide... what? A more objective perspective?”

“Not necessarily more objective,” Myrin replied. “But longer-lived. Your people witness the full arc of what we experience only as discrete moments. Our histories are written by the victors of individual conflicts; yours observe the patterns across dozens of such conflicts.”

A smile crossed Elyran’s lips. “A sophisticated perspective, Apprentice Alastair. One that many of my own kind would do well to consider.”

Recognition flashed in her eyes. “A praise from the author of ‘Temporal Perspectives on the Third Age’, I’m honored.”

“Ah, that is a relatively recent work, by my standards,” he bowed slightly, “but I’m pleased that you are familiar with it.”

Myrin’s composure faltered momentarily. “I’ve translated portions for my studies - your analysis of how the Verdant Alliance misinterpreted elven diplomatic protocols - it fundamentally changed how scholars view the outbreak of the Century War.”

Elyran inclined his head in acknowledgment, finding himself increasingly pleased by her genuine admiration. Most humans, even scholars, tended to view elven historical texts as either impenetrable mysticism or propaganda designed to justify elven exceptionalism.

“If I may be so bold,” Myrin continued, “I’ve been attempting to reconcile the Human and elven accounts of the Battle of Silvermere, but the discrepancies are...significant.”

“Silvermere,” Elyran repeated thoughtfully. “Yes, I imagine they would be.”

“You lived through that, didn’t you?” her eyes widened slightly.

“Indeed, I have,” his gaze momentarily drifting far away. “Though not as a combatant. I was there to observe, to record.”

A silence fell between them, broken only by the sounds of reconstruction and the closer melody of a thrush singing from the branches above. Elyran found himself contemplating the situation. It would be prudent to not pursue this interaction further, to end this suggestion of cooperation with a polite disengagement. After all, humans lived such brief lives and their scholarly projects would inevitably be abandoned half-completed. Yet there was something in this young woman’s perspective that resonated with questions he himself had been exploring for decades.

“The College of Westmark has a limited collection of elven texts,” he said finally. “And I suspect most are poor translations at best, deliberate misrepresentations at worst.”

“That’s precisely the problem,” Myrin replied. “I’ve been learning Old Elvish to access original sources, but—”

“Your pronunciation would be atrocious, no offense,” Elyran interrupted with a gentle smile. “The subtleties of our language require hearing it spoken by those who lived when it was common.”

Myrin’s expression fell slightly, then brightened with sudden hope. “Would you—that is, might you consider—”

“Mentoring a Human scholar?” Elyran finished for her. “It would be... unconventional.”

“But not unprecedented,” she countered quickly. “The Chronicles of Eastmarch mention that Archivist Silvanel took on Human apprentices during the Second Restoration.”

Elyran’s surprise must have shown on his face, for Myrin continued with growing confidence. “And your own writings suggest that cross-cultural scholarly exchange was more common during the early Concordance than most modern histories - Human or elven - acknowledge.”

“Impressive. You’ve read my monograph on pre-Concordance academic traditions,” he said. It was a minor work, one that had received little attention even among elven scholars.

“Every word I could translate,” she said. “Though I suspect I missed many nuances.”

Elyran studied her with new interest. Most humans approached elven knowledge seeking magical secrets or military advantages. This young scholar seemed motivated by something rarer: a genuine desire to understand how different perspectives shaped the recording of history itself.

He paused, taking in the shifting atmosphere of the site. All around them, the organised chaos of the reconstruction was finally winding down. The air was heavy with the chalky, bitter scent of wet lime and crushed limestone dust, settling like a fine gray mist over the workers’ sweat-dampened tunics. Above them, massive wooden cranes and dwarven-forged iron pulleys gave long, exhausted creaks in the cooling breeze as the foremen secured the heavy scaffolding for the night.

Elyran watched the fading light play across the architecture. As the sun dipped toward the western horizon, the long, jagged shadows of the original, blackened elven foundations began to stretch and creep upward. Slowly, the dark silhouettes of the ancient ruins seemed to swallow the pristine, geometric white blocks of the new Human masonry. The image was striking - the ancient past inevitably overtaking the present, no matter how desperately the short-lived races tried to build over it.

“The Silvermere discrepancies,” Elyran said after a while, “cannot be resolved through texts alone. There are contexts, cultural assumptions, even linguistic subtleties that no translation can adequately convey.”

Myrin nodded, trying to maintain scholarly detachment, but her brows betrayed her disappointment.

“Which is why,” he continued, “if you are serious in your studies, you would benefit from a more... direct approach to elven historical methodologies.”

Hope flickered across her features. “You mean—”

“I plan to be in Westmark for the turning of the season,” Elyran said, his decision crystallizing as he spoke. “If you wish to discuss Silvermere - and the broader questions it raises about historical perspective - you may find me at the Emerald Leaf Inn near the old East Quarter.”

A smile illuminated Myrin’s face - bright, intense, and fascinating, at least by elven standards.

“Thank you, Archivist Moonshadow,” she said, bowing slightly. “I would be honored.”

“Elyran,” he said gently. “If we are to engage in scholarly exchange, we should dispense with titles.”

“E-ly-ran,” she tested the syllables with a smile. “And please, call me Myrin.”

“It’ll be my pleasure, Myrin,” he bowed slightly. “I believe the reconstruction is done for today?”

“Oh…yes, we should probably go as well,” Myrin just noticed the laborers leaving.

“Unless we want to get arrested by Jergen.”

As they departed for the exit, Elyran noticed a change in Myrin’s pace - light with excitement. Slowing down ever so slightly, he opened his journal once more, adding a new line beneath his observations on architectural influences: “Encountered Human scholar (M. Alastair) with an unusual perspective on historical divergence. Lovely smile and potential for interesting comparative analysis.”

The last line amused him. In truth, he had not felt such curiosity about someone in at least a century. Perhaps there was value in this bright Human mind. Or perhaps, he acknowledged to himself, after centuries observing different histories, he had finally grown weary of watching from a distance as societies rose and fell.

What a ridiculous thought.

Engagement inevitably led to attachment. Attachment led to grief.

And grief, in the experience of his peers, led to centuries of pretending one was fine about it, retreating to their forests and towers.

Participating in history with short-lived races is a hassle.

Yet as Elyran made his way out of the reconstruction site, the setting sun casting his shadow long before him, he found himself anticipating his next conversation with the young woman.

Scandalous.

I decided to write a small piece loosely based on the following prompt:

Take one small, specific detail you've built, like a law, a piece of clothing, a type of food, a ritual, and use it as the focal point for a story's opening scene. Show, don't tell, how this detail introduces a character and a central conflict.

The world for the piece is my D&D Slavic Setting - Gardar Realm.

Unlike his wife, Vasiliy loved living in the borderlands.

“Sveta, I’m going out to see Lesha, will be back late,” he called out as he was closing his workshop.

“Make sure not to wander off, I hear something has been spotted in the forests again,” came the reply from the garden behind the house.

Sure there were dangerous creatures somewhere in the forests around them, but the alleys of Kitezh-Grad weren’t exactly clean of shady individuals.

“Nonsense as usual,” he grunted more to himself rather than a reply.

He would much rather spend his time near the forest than in a place where he needed to act to fit in - he hated that. Hated the posh merchants from the Hanza Union looking down upon a less-wealthy weapon-smith. Hated how the boyar lords passed him over in favor of other, more well-connected craftsmen that kissed their way up the social ladder. There was a lot to hate in that city, even though the view of the Great Karkolist Oak towering above the mountains was breathtaking.

Now however, he was free. Free from the pressure of being fake for other fakes. Working his craft in a small workshop near the “The Dispute” - his favorite establishment.

“Heeey, Vasya! Take a seat, I’ll be over in a moment!” a voice called out as soon as he entered the brewhouse.

His wife’s brother, Lesha, worked here as a server. A few months ago he arrived in Kitezh to see his family, while taking time off from work, and ended up drinking with Vasiliy. Then they ended up in a ditch, laughing and cursing the big city. The next morning, while suffering from hangover and drinking rassol, Vasiliy asked Lesha about the life in the borderlands.

“The usual?”

“Absolutely,” Vasiliy replied with a smile and then noticed something. “Did you get into a fight?”

“Oh that?” Lesha pointed to a small bruise on the cheek. “Yeah, one of the Wolf-kin took a liking to me, but I told him no. He had to be reminded of manners. Anyway, give me a second.”

A mug of dark green brew materialised in front of Vasiliy after a few seconds.

“Enjoy!” the server said with a smile, watching Vasiliy take a slow sip.

Bitter and spicy, almost peppery.

The Green Wyvern Goo, as the locals called, was another thing Lesha told Vasiliy about during that hangover morning.

“It’s actually pretty safe,” he said. “We get rarely get attacks from the fanatics of the whatever that thing in the west is. Mostly it’s a mixture of different creatures we have to contend with. Sometimes there are wyverns.”

“The spawn of Gorinich? How is that bloody safe?” Vasiliy asked bewildered.

“Oh we love when they show up, we get to make them into beer!” the man replied with a conspiratorial grin.

“Beer?! How?!”

“The saliva resin from the wyverns, we dry it, grind it and add it in as hops! You gotta try that!”

Ever since then Vasiliy couldn’t get that beer out of his mind. He convinced his wife to move. She, unlike him, had built up her comfortable social circle amongst the wives of the merchants and craftspeople and was naturally unhappy to move. Initially.

“The Great Oak truly provides,” she said one night as she excitedly told him of her new acquaintance, the local elder’s wife.

She built a new community for herself rather quickly and surprisingly so did Vasiliy. The “Weapon-Smith of Kitezh” the locals called him. Lesha hyped his brother-in-law to the brewhouse’s customers and people came for small favors. Then the hunters began showing up, asking for repairs, and commissioning him for arrows, daggers and so on.

He took another sip. He loved the almost pepper-like kick of the brew. It slid down his throat, warming up his soul. He felt happy that he was finally in the right place. Grateful to Lesha, who showed up right when he did, several months ago, and basically charmed Vasiliy into coming. To the wyvern and the hunters that were responsible for this fantastic drink. All was truly well.

“The Great Oak provides,” he whispered to himself and took another sip.

The preceding exploration of death gods, psychopomps, and the architecture of afterlives provides the theological blueprint for a culture’s relationship with mortality. We have seen how the character of a death deity can shape a people’s fears and hopes, and how the nature of the underworld - be it Valhalla’s feasting hall or Dante’s stratified Hell - reflects a society’s core values. But a blueprint is not the building. Beliefs are intangible; their true power in worldbuilding is revealed when we ask:

How do these beliefs manifest on the ground?

The answer lies in the rituals of death. A funeral is more than the disposal of a corpse; it is a performance of faith, a social statement, and an economic engine. It is the bridge between the abstract cosmology of the afterlife and the tangible reality of the living. Proper design of the funerary customs of your world, allows you to breathe life into its cultures, revealing their deepest anxieties, their social hierarchies, and their most cherished virtues.

A Good Death vs. a Bad Death

Before any rite can begin, a culture must first judge the death itself. Not all deaths are created equal. The concept of a “good death” versus a “bad death” reveals what a society truly values in life.

A Good Death is one that aligns with a culture’s highest ideals. For a warrior society, it is death in glorious battle. For a communal culture, it is dying of old age surrounded by loving family. For a people who value knowledge, it might be passing away peacefully after completing a life’s great work. A good death is celebrated, and the deceased is honored with the culture’s finest rites.

A Bad Death is one that brings shame or fear. This could be a death from a dishonorable disease, a death by suicide in a culture that condemns it, or a death alone and forgotten. Victims of a “bad death” might receive minimal, hurried rites, or be disposed of in a way designed to prevent their “tainted” spirit from lingering.

This distinction creates immediate social texture and potential for conflict. A family might go to great lengths to hide the true cause of a loved one’s “bad death” to ensure they receive a proper, honorable funeral.

The Fate of the Physical Form

What happens to the body?

The answer is rarely a matter of simple convenience. It once again depends on the culture itself.

Burial: The act of interring a body in the earth suggests a connection to the land itself. Perhaps the people believe the body must return to the soil from which their ancestors first emerged. Or maybe, as with the ancient Greeks who feared wandering spirits, burial is a necessary act to keep the dead from haunting the living. A culture that buries its dead whole might believe in a physical resurrection, or that the spirit requires its vessel to be intact to be recognized by the psychopomp, Anubis, in the underworld.

Cremation: To burn the dead is to believe in release. This practice often signifies that the body is a temporary shell and the soul or spirit must be liberated from it to ascend to the next realm. The smoke rising to the heavens is a powerful visual metaphor for this journey. In a society that fears necromancy or undeath, cremation is also the ultimate safeguard. A culture that reveres a sun god or a god of fire and purification might see burning as the holiest rite.

Sky Burial or Exposure: In many cultures from the Tibetan plateau to some Native American tribes, the dead were left exposed for carrion birds to consume. On a practical level, this solves the problem of burial in frozen or rocky ground. On a spiritual level it represents a final act of charity - giving one’s body back to the ecosystem. It can also signify a belief that sacred animals, like vultures or eagles, are emissaries of the gods, tasked with carrying the essence of the deceased to the heavens.

Mummification and Preservation: As the example of the ancient Egyptians illustrates, the preservation of the body is a monumental undertaking born from a specific theological need. If the soul, or ka, requires its physical body to return to in the afterlife, then preservation is paramount. This belief also creates and entire industry. It requires skilled embalmers, a trade in rare salts and resins, masterful tomb-builders, and scribes to pen the spells for the journey. In a fantasy or sci-fi setting, this could manifest as magical stasis fields, cryo-preservation, or clerical rites that keep the body from decay.

Transformation or Repurposing: Instead of disposing of a body, the culture might choose to transform it. A fungal-based species might use the bodies of their dead as the fertile ground from which new members of the colony grow. A highly pragmatic or grim society might practice ritual cannibalism, believing it allows the strength and wisdom of the deceased to pass to the living.

The Liminal Space

The time between the moment of death and the final funeral rite is a sacred, liminal space, filled with its own unique customs.

The Wake: Is this period a time of somber reflection or joyous celebration? An Irish-style wake, with drinking, storytelling, and celebrating the life of the deceased, suggests a culture that confronts grief with communal strength and nostalgia. A silent, candlelit vigil suggests a more solemn, introspective approach to loss.

Guarding the Body: In a world with restless spirits or body-snatching ghouls, this period is one of active defense. The family might be required to sit with the body, chanting prayers or holding silver charms to ward off evil. This turns grief into a tense and vital duty.

Preparing the Departed: This involves the ritual washing, dressing, and anointing of the body. The clothes and items chosen for this final dressing are deeply symbolic. A king is dressed in his finest robes, a warrior in their armor, a priest in their vestments, all preparing them for their role in the next life.

The Rites of Passage

Once the fate of the body is decided, the rituals surrounding it become a stage for a cultural performance. These rites tell us what a people honor, how they handle grief, and how they maintain social order.

Grave Goods: The practice of burying possessions with the dead is a window into their vision of the afterlife. The coin for Charon is a toll for a journey. The Viking longship, buried with its chieftain, is a vessel for the final voyage. A warrior buried with her sword and shield is expected to fight in the next life, as in Valhalla. A scholar buried with their scrolls may believe knowledge is the true currency of eternity. Conversely, a culture that buries their dead with nothing might believe that worldly possessions are a burden to the spirit, or that all are equal in death.

The Eulogy and Mourning: How do the living remember the dead? The virtues praised in a eulogy are the virtues the culture promotes. Is the deceased celebrated for their piety, their battlefield valor, their wealth, their large family, or their service to the community? The Norse sagas are filled with praise for mighty warriors, while a monastic culture might eulogize a life of quiet contemplation.

The expression of grief is also telling. Is mourning a public, theatrical affair with paid mourners and loud wailing, demonstrating the importance of the deceased? Or is it a stoic, private matter, reflecting a culture that values emotional restraint? The length and requirements of the mourning period - such as wearing black or abstaining from festivals - can reinforce social status and family obligation.

Remembering and Communing

A funeral is not the end of the relationship with the deceased. Cultures develop ways to remember, honor, and even communicate with their dead long after the rites are over.

Ancestor Worship: Do families maintain a household shrine with portraits or icons of their ancestors? Do they leave out offerings of food and drink? This suggests the dead are still considered active (if unseen) members of the family, whose favor must be courted.

Consulting the Dead: In a world with magic, this can be literal. A noble house might employ a “spirit-speaker” to consult the wisdom of their ancestors before making a major decision. A yearly festival might involve a ritual where the spirits of the dead are invited back to the world of the living for one night (similar to Día de los Muertos).

Memorialization: How are the dead remembered by the community? Are there grand public monuments listing the names of war heroes? Are libraries or public works named after great philanthropists? Or does the culture believe in letting the dead rest, discouraging personal memorials in favor of a quiet return to the cycle of life and death?

Death and the Economy

As we saw with the Egyptian example, a culture’s beliefs about death can have a massive impact on its government, laws, and economy. Entire professions and social strata can arise from the perceived needs of the dead.

Death-Related Professions: Beyond the priests who officiate the rites, who else profits from death?

Undertakers & Embalmers: As in Egypt, these could be highly respected (and wealthy) artisans holding secret knowledge.

Tomb Artisans: Masons, carvers, and architects who design and build everything from simple headstones to elaborate mausoleums.

Professional Mourners: Hired to signify the status of the deceased.

Necromancers & Spirit-Wardens: In a world where spirits are real, there would be a need for those who can speak to the dead, put them to rest, or defend against their wrath. Is this magic legal? State-sanctioned? Or is it a black market enterprise?

Inheritance and Law: Death forces a transfer of power and wealth. The laws of inheritance shape a society. Does property pass to the eldest son (primogeniture), creating stable noble houses? Is it divided equally among all children, potentially fragmenting estates over generations? Or does it all revert to the state or the temple? These rules dictate family dynamics, political stability, and social mobility.

The Geography of the Dead: Where are the dead laid to rest? A sprawling necropolis outside the city walls becomes a silent mirror of the city of the living, with grand tombs for the wealthy and simple graves for the poor. Ancestral burial mounds dotting the landscape can become sacred sites and territorial markers. The location of graves is usually connected to status, history, and a culture’s relationship with its past.

Weaving the Threads: An Example

Let us tie these concepts together, building on the mythological foundations we’ve explored.

Imagine a culture of island-dwelling mariners who worship a tempestuous sea goddess, Marra, who is both a giver of bounty and a taker of life. Their Lord of the Afterlife is the Silent King, who rules a quiet, sunless realm at the bottom of the ocean. The psychopomp is not a person, but the undertow itself, which pulls worthy souls down to the King’s court.

The Belief: Marra is fickle. To die on land from old age or sickness is considered a curse - a sign that Marra has forgotten you. A “good death” is to be lost at sea. The body is an anchor for the soul; if it is not given to the sea, the soul becomes a tormented, airy spirit, forever haunting the coastlines, unable to reach the Silent King.

The Ritual: When a person dies on land, their funeral is a somber but urgent affair. The body is wrapped in fishing nets, weighted with carved stones depicting their life’s achievements (a great catch, a large family). There is no eulogy, only the low chanting of a sea shanty meant to appease Marra. The body is then taken by boat to the deepest trench and ceremoniously cast overboard. This is their last chance to be claimed by the undertow.

Grave Goods: The only “grave good” is a single, perfect pearl placed on the deceased’s tongue - a tribute to the Silent King. This also makes pearl-diving a sacred and lucrative profession.

Social Hierarchy: Families display their piety and wealth by the quality of the carved stones and the size of the boat used in the final ceremony. To be too poor to afford a proper sea burial is the ultimate shame.

Psychology: This culture would be fatalistic and daring. Young sailors would be reckless, seeking a glorious death in a storm. The elderly would be pitied. “May Marra claim you” would be a blessing, while “May you die warm in your bed” would be a terrible curse.

Conclusion

Through funeral rites, we have defined this culture’s greatest fear (a landlocked death), its highest ambition (a death at sea), its economy (pearls and stone carving), and its very character (fatalistic and sea-bound). This way the funeral rite is not an afterthought.

Death is a powerful storyteller. While we often build our worlds through creation myths, political systems, and magical laws, the manner in which a society chooses to end a life can reveal more about its soul than any founding charter. An execution is a statement. It is a ritual, a warning, a political theater, and a dark mirror held up to a culture’s deepest values, fears, and beliefs.

Human history - both real and imagined - is a grotesque gallery of final punishments. From the symbolic trampling by an elephant to the apocryphal horror of the brazen bull, these methods are more than just grisly trivia. They are windows into the societies that conceived them. For the worldbuilder, they are a potent, if grim, tool.

So, how do we move beyond simply picking a method from history and dropping it into our world? We must ask ourselves why they execute someone that particular way.

The Five Questions of the Condemned

Before you design your gallows or sharpen your axe, consider what an execution method says about the fundamental pillars of your society. Ask yourself these five questions.

What is its Purpose?

Is the goal simple deterrence? Is it a spectacle for a populace hungry for entertainment? Is it a somber act of justice, performed privately? Is it a religious necessity? The Romans fed Christians to lions to both kill them and to create a public spectacle that reinforced the state’s power and dehumanized a perceived enemy. Conversely, a society that values solemnity might carry out its sentences behind closed doors, viewing public death as barbaric.

What is its Symbolism?

A powerful execution method is full of cultural symbols.

Power: As noted, trampling by elephant was a projection of the ruler’s dominion over nature itself. In a futuristic setting, a tyrant might demonstrate their power by ejecting a traitor from an airlock - a symbol of their total control over life-sustaining technology.

Justice: Does the punishment fit the crime? A society built on a rigid code of an eye for an eye might devise methods that poetically mirror the offense. A traitor who sold secrets might be forced to swallow molten metal shaped like coins. A blasphemer who denied the sun god might be chained to a pillar in the desert, to be judged by the very deity they scorned.

Purity: If a culture is obsessed with purity, its executions might focus on cleansing. Burning at the stake was both painful and was seen as a way to purge heresy and witchcraft, leaving no physical body to corrupt the land.

What are the Spiritual Implications?

For many cultures, death is not the end. An execution can be designed to attack the soul as well as the body. The British practice of “blowing from a gun” in India was horrific for its physical destruction, but it was a calculated act of spiritual warfare against Hindus who required an intact body for funeral rites.

Consider your world’s afterlife.

In a world where souls anchor to their remains, complete obliteration (e.g., via acid or magical disintegration) would be the ultimate punishment, denying any chance of spiritual continuance.

Conversely, in a culture that believes vengeful spirits can rise from improperly buried bodies, an execution might involve elaborate rituals of binding and sealing the corpse to protect the living. The “Devourer’s Kiss” might involve a creature that consumes the body and soul, ensuring a “true death.”

What are the Practical Constraints?

Your world’s geography, technology, and resources will dictate its methods.

Geography: A maritime culture might practice a form of keelhauling or simply “walk the plank.” A society living in a vast, vertical forest might have “The Long Drop,” where the condemned are cast from the highest branches. A desert kingdom, where water is sacred, might see death by dehydration as a suitable fate.

Technology: A low-magic, Iron Age society will rely on blades, ropes, and stones. A magocracy might use petrification spells, soul-trapping crystals, or animate golems to carry out their sentences. A steampunk city might have an overly-complex “pressure-valve purge” that is as much a display of engineering prowess as it is an execution.

Is the Story True?

As with the blood eagle and scaphism, not every horrifying tale is a literal account. Misinformation is a powerful worldbuilding tool. Perhaps your kingdom’s enemies spread tales that your people execute prisoners by feeding them to giant spiders. The truth might be far more mundane: prisoners are simply left in a deep cavern, where spiders happen to live. Or maybe the “spider” is a metaphorical name for a multi-limbed torture device. This creates a layered reality, where the perception of a culture can be as important as the truth.

The Theater of Death

The method is the centerpiece, but the ritual surrounding it is the performance. The moments leading up to and following the execution are rich with worldbuilding potential.

The Final Procession: How does the condemned get to the place of execution? Is it a “perp walk” through a jeering crowd, designed for maximum public shaming? Is it a solemn, silent procession led by priests? In ancient Rome, defeated generals in a Triumph were paraded through the city in chains before being ritually strangled, turning a military celebration into a political execution.

The Last Words: Is the condemned allowed to speak? A final speech can be a moment for a defiant political statement, a heartfelt confession, or a final curse. A regime that allows last words might be showing its confidence, believing no speech can undermine it. A regime that gags its prisoners shows its fear of their message.

The Role of the Crowd: Is the execution a public holiday, a form of gruesome entertainment with vendors selling food and drink? Or is the crowd somber and fearful? A cheering crowd might signal popular support for the government’s action. A silent or weeping crowd might suggest the condemned is a martyr, and the execution is an act of tyranny.

The Aftermath: What happens to the body? Is it left on display as a warning, like the heads of traitors on the spikes of London Bridge? Is it given to the family for a proper burial? Or is it thrown into an unmarked pit, an act of final erasure? The fate of the corpse continues the story long after the life has ended.

The Hand of Justice

Who carries out the sentence? The role of the executioner is a powerful reflection of a society’s relationship with state-sanctioned death.

The Outcast: In many historical European societies, the executioner was a shunned and feared figure. They were a necessary evil, forced to live outside the city walls and often belonging to a family that held the grim trade for generations. They were tainted by death.

The Priest or High Official: In a theocracy or a highly ritualized society, the executioner might be a high-ranking priest or official. The act is not seen as a dirty job, but as a sacred duty - the hand of a god or the state itself delivering its final judgment. This elevates the act from a mere killing to a holy or civic rite.

The Anonymous Machine: In a technologically advanced or bureaucratic society, the executioner might be a faceless automaton or a button pushed by a person who cannot see the condemned. This is designed to remove the human element, to make the process “clean” and “impersonal.” It speaks of a society that is uncomfortable with the visceral reality of death, or one that wishes to absolve individuals of responsibility.

The Victim’s Kin: In some tribal or clan-based societies, the right of execution might be given to the family of the victim. This turns state justice into personal vengeance, potentially fueling cycles of blood feuds and further violence.

From Principle to Practice

Let us apply these questions to create new, world-specific methods.

The Luminous Purge (Symbolism & Technology): In the city-state of Heliopolis, built of light-refracting crystal, the worst crime is “shadow-weaving” - the practice of forbidden magic that darkens the soul. The condemned are taken to the Sunspire at high noon. Priests and artificers use a series of massive lenses to focus a concentrated beam of sunlight onto the criminal. The death is swift and absolute, a flash of incinerating light. It serves as a symbolic cleansing, a technological marvel, and a terrifying warning: in this city, there is no place for darkness to hide.

The Stone’s Memory (Justice & Spirituality): The dwarves of the Undermountain believe that stone holds the memory of all deeds done upon it. A dwarf who murders another is sentenced to “The Telling.” They are sealed in a small, freshly-hewn stone chamber with the murder weapon. It is believed that over days, the stone will absorb the murderer’s guilt and life force, replaying the crime in their mind until their body gives out. Their withered corpse is left entombed forever, becoming a permanent, silent warning etched into the memory of the mountain itself.

The Tyrant’s Garden (Sadism & Power): The mad Empress of the Verdant Empire is a master botanist. For high treason, she sentences victims to “The Reaping.” The condemned is injected with the sap of a rare, carnivorous plant. Over the course of a week, the sap takes root in their body. They remain lucid as flowering vines sprout from their skin, slowly and painfully consuming them from within. The end result is a beautiful, blossoming “statue” for the Empress’s private garden - “proof” of her dominion over life, death, and nature itself. It is cruelty for cruelty’s sake, disguised as a twisted form of art.

Class and Punishment: It’s important to remember that justice is rarely blind. In many societies, the form of execution is determined by social class. A nobleman convicted of treason might be granted a “clean” death by beheading with a sword, a death seen as honorable. A commoner convicted of the same crime might be subjected to the prolonged, agonizing, and shameful death of hanging, drawing, and quartering. This disparity is a powerful way to show the hypocrisy and inequality at the heart of your justice system.

Conclusion

It demonstrates a culture’s relationship with justice, the soul, and death itself. When you build your world, do not neglect the gallows, the pyre, or the executioner’s block. For in the methods of a society’s final punishments, you will find the clearest reflection of its living character. What will your world’s last words be?

When we say - Piracy - we conjure images of some swashbuckling adventure, ill-gotten gains, and a defiant fist shaken at the established order. In science fiction and fantasy, pirates are a beloved trope, offering endless possibilities for conflict, character, and a touch of roguish charm. However, many fictional pirates are often portrayed as comically inept, barely profitable, and existing in a state of chaotic barbarism that wouldn’t last five minutes in a realistic interstellar or fantasy economy.

This article, will guide you in crafting pirate factions that are both cool but also make sense within your universe. Despite focusing on sci-fi settings, we’ll explore everything that works in both sci-fi and fantasy worlds - ships, targets, territories, and bases - ensuring your pirates are a credible threat, a source of fascinating stories, and perhaps even a surprisingly profitable enterprise.

The Pirate Vessel

The iconic pirate ship is central to their identity. But what kind of ship truly serves a space pirate?

The “Dreadnought Pirate” is a Myth

Cost & Acquisition: Military-grade capital ships are astronomically expensive. How would pirates acquire one? Stealing one is a monumental feat, akin to a modern street gang hijacking an aircraft carrier. Buying one? No legitimate shipyard or government would sell to known outlaws.

Maintenance & Upkeep: Such vessels require massive crews, specialized parts, and huge amounts of fuel and ammunition. Where do pirates get these resources without a state-level industrial base and supply chain?

Attention Magnet: A warship flying pirate colors is an immediate, high-priority threat to every major power. It’s the space equivalent of the Bismarck going rogue – every navy in range would be scrambled to hunt it down. It’s a short, glorious, and very final career path.

The smart pirate captain opts for something more practical:

Civilian Hulls: Freighters, old haulers, decommissioned transports, even robust mining vessels are ideal. They are:

- Available: Easier to acquire legitimately (perhaps before turning pirate), steal with less immediate military reprisal, or buy on the black/grey market.

- Inconspicuous: A common freighter can blend in, allowing pirates to get close to targets or slip into less reputable ports without raising immediate alarms.

- Customizable: Their often modular nature and spacious holds allow for extensive (and often jury-rigged) modifications.

“Frankenstein” Ships: Pirates are masters of improvisation. Their ships would likely be patchworks of stolen tech, salvaged parts, and cleverly hidden systems. Think less pristine warship and more heavily modified, beat-up, but surprisingly effective workhorse. The Millennium Falcon is a good (though high-end) example of this philosophy.

Modifications and Armaments:

A civilian hull needs upgrades to be an effective pirate vessel.

Engines: Souped-up for speed and maneuverability to chase down prey or escape patrols.

Cargo Space: Often expanded by removing non-essential civilian components to maximize loot capacity.

Hidden Weaponry: Retractable turrets, concealed missile launchers, EMP generators, or energy harpoons. The element of surprise is crucial.

Boarding Equipment: Grappling lines, breaching pods, cutting lasers for accessing the target vessel.

Sensors & ECM: Enhanced sensor suites to find targets and electronic countermeasures to jam enemy sensors or disable their ships.

The Pirate’s Toolkit

A pirate’s greatest weapon isn’t their ship’s cannon; it’s their cunning. Their tactics are built around avoiding a fair fight at all costs.

The False Flag: Pirates won’t fly their own colors until the last possible moment. They will disguise their ship, using forged transponder codes to appear as a legitimate merchant vessel, a distress call, or even a system patrol ship. They get close by trickery, instead of brute force.

Information Warfare: Successful pirates are masters of intelligence. They have networks of informants in shipping guilds, port authorities, and corporate offices who feed them information on valuable, lightly-defended cargo in exchange for a cut of the profits. They know a ship’s route, its contents, and its defensive capabilities before they ever make a move.

The Disabling Strike: A pirate doesn’t want to destroy their target; they want to capture it intact. Their opening salvo is likely targeted to knock out the ship’s systems, like a “harpoon” missile that latches on and disables the engines, or a computer virus that cripples the vessel from within.

Boarding Actions: The goal is to get inside. Pirates would be equipped with breaching pods, cutting lasers, and mag-grapples. Their personal gear would be optimized for close-quarters fighting in zero-g or tight corridors.

A pirate’s goal is profit and survival, not glorious last stands.

What Not to Target!

Heavily Armed Military Convoys/Warships: As discussed, this is suicide.

High-Security Treasure Fleets: While tempting, these are usually too well-defended. The “Spanish Treasure Galleon” of space is a rare and dangerous prize.

Ships of Major Powers in Core Systems: Again, this invites overwhelming retaliation.

Profitable and Plausible Targets!

Successful pirates are opportunistic and target the path of least resistance for the most gain.

Independent Freighters & Merchant Vessels: Especially those operating on less-patrolled routes or belonging to smaller corporations/polities with limited ability to retaliate.

Low-End Finished Goods & Components: Think computer chips, refined chemicals, basic machinery, textiles, low-grade weaponry, medical supplies. These are:

- Common: More opportunities.

- Easily Fenced: Less traceable and more in demand on black markets or in fringe settlements than, say, a crate of military-grade plasma cannons.

- Less Protected: The cargo isn’t valuable enough to warrant heavy escort for every shipment.

Raw Materials (Sometimes): Water, fuel, unprocessed ores – less glamorous, but vital for survival or can be sold in bulk if the pirate has the infrastructure.

Ransom: Capturing important individuals or even entire crews for ransom can be lucrative, but also risky as it invites more determined pursuit.

Location, location, location is as true for piracy as it is for real estate.

Avoiding the Spotlight

Major Hyperlanes & Core Systems: These are the highways of interstellar commerce and thus heavily patrolled by navies and corporate security. Attacking here is asking for trouble.

The Outer Rim and Beyond:

Fringe Systems/Outer Rim Territories: These areas often have less governmental oversight, fewer patrols, and a higher tolerance for illicit activities. Star Wars’ Outer Rim is a classic example.

Disputed Territories: Areas where multiple factions vie for control can create power vacuums that pirates can exploit.

Nebulae & Asteroid Fields: Provide natural cover for ambushes and hideouts.

Moderately Traveled but Independent Areas: Enough traffic for targets, but not enough official presence to make piracy too risky. Ideal options.

The Pirate Haven

Every pirate crew needs a place to rest, repair, re-arm, and - most importantly - turn their stolen goods into usable wealth.

Option 1: The Self-Made Stronghold: A secret, autonomous base.

- Pros: Secrecy, autonomy.

- Cons: Isolation, vulnerability if discovered, resource-intensive to build and maintain.

Option 2: The Established Den of Thieves: A bustling shadow port like Tortuga or a Hutt-controlled system.

- Pros: Existing infrastructure (markets, repair bays), a degree of protection, networking opportunities.

- Cons: Lack of control, competition, and you are subject to the whims of the local crime lord, who always takes a cut.

A pirate haven is also a functioning economic hub.

The Fence: The most important figure in any haven. This is the broker who buys stolen goods from the pirates at a fraction of their value and then uses their own network to launder them back into the legitimate market.

The Chop Shop: Shipyards and mechanics who specialize in repairing battle damage, installing illegal modifications, and altering a ship’s appearance and transponder to give it a new identity.

The Quartermaster: Suppliers who deal in the necessities of the pirate life: munitions, fuel, medical supplies, and food, all sold at a premium with no questions asked.

The Service Industry: Every haven has its own ecosystem of bars, gambling dens, and entertainment venues, all designed to separate a pirate from their newly acquired wealth.

The Pirate Code

A pirate crew that survives is not a chaotic mob. It is an organization with rules, a hierarchy, and a shared ideology.

The Pragmatist Crew: For most pirates, the “code” is a business arrangement. It is a set of rules dictating the chain of command, the division of spoils, and the duties of each crew member. This code is designed for one purpose: to maximize profit and ensure the smooth operation of the ship. Loyalty is to the paycheck.

The Ideological Crew: Some pirates are driven by more than just greed. They might be political rebels, escaped slaves, or members of an oppressed minority who have turned to piracy as a form of resistance. Their targets are not random; they are symbolic. They might exclusively prey on the ships of a specific corporation or government. For them, piracy is a weapon of rebellion. Example: The pirates in Porco Rosso who, despite being criminals, have a sense of community and stand against rising fascism.

The Barbaric Crew: This is the cliché, but it can work if it’s justified. These are the pirates who have truly abandoned all societal norms. They might be members of a death cult, nihilists, or simply so brutalized by their past that they live only for violence. They are less interested in profit and more in spreading chaos. These crews tend to burn out quickly, as their extreme violence makes them a top priority for law enforcement.

Conclusion

Ship Smart: Favor modified civilian vessels over improbable warships.

Target Wisely: Focus on “low-hanging fruit” – valuable but less-defended goods and independent traders. Avoid direct confrontation with major navies unless you have a death wish or a very specific, high-reward goal.

Location Matters: Operate in fringe/lawless space. Know the trade routes and patrol patterns.

Secure a Base: Whether self-built or within a larger criminal network, a safe haven is essential.

Profit is King (usually): True pirates are motivated by wealth and survival, not necessarily grand ideals (though some might have a “Robin Hood” veneer).

Don’t Piss Off the Protagonists (or major powers) Needlessly: Unless your pirates are meant to be antagonists who get satisfyingly defeated, they need to be smart enough to avoid drawing too much heat from those who can truly end them.

By considering these elements, you can move beyond the cliché of the “stupid space barbarian” and create pirate factions that are cunning, resourceful, and a genuinely interesting part of your sci-fi universe’s tapestry. They can be antagonists, reluctant allies, or even protagonists, but their operations should always have a core of plausibility that makes their successes (and failures) more impactful.

Oppression, in its many forms, is a powerful and tragically common force in human history. For a writer, it is a potent tool for worldbuilding, capable of shaping every facet of a fictional society, from its grand political structures to the intimate details of its characters’ lives. By examining real-world examples of oppression, we can learn to build fictional worlds that are compelling, conflict-ridden and deeply human. This artiicle will explore the mechanisms of oppression to illustrate how these systems can be woven into the fabric of a fictional world.

The Mechanisms of Oppression

Oppression is rarely a monolithic force. It operates through a complex interplay of cultural, political, and economic mechanisms, each reinforcing the others to create a system of control.

The most insidious forms of oppression target the very heart of a people’s identity: their culture. By erasing, sanitizing, or commodifying a culture, a dominant group can effectively neutralize its power and assimilate its members.

Forced Assimilation: One of the most direct methods of cultural oppression is forced assimilation, often targeting the youngest and most vulnerable members of a society. In Canada, the residential school system was designed to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children. These children were taken from their families and placed in schools where they were forbidden from speaking their native languages or practicing their cultural traditions. The goal was to “educate” them away from their Indigenous identity and integrate them into settler society. Similarly, Zainichi Koreans in Japan have historically faced pressure to assimilate into Japanese society, with many adopting Japanese-style names to avoid discrimination.

Commodification and Sanitization of Culture: A more subtle, yet equally damaging, form of cultural oppression is the commodification and sanitization of a culture for economic gain. In China’s Zhongdian County, the government rebranded the region as the mythical “Shangri-La” to attract tourists. This involved a large-scale urbanization project to create an “authentic neo-Tibetan style” of architecture, developed by the dominant Han Chinese. This process of commodifying Tibetan culture meant that only certain, state-approved aspects of the culture were presented to the world, while the deeper, more authentic elements were lost or suppressed. This “flattening” of culture for easy consumption can be a powerful tool for worldbuilding, creating a society where the outward appearance of cultural harmony masks a deeper cultural crisis.

Erasure of Cultural Heritage: The most brutal form of cultural oppression is the outright erasure of a people’s heritage. In Xinjiang, the Chinese government has engaged in a systematic campaign to dismantle Uyghur culture. The ancient city of Kashgar, once a vibrant center of Uyghur life, has been largely demolished and replaced with a sanitized, “Disneyland” version of its former self. The new, wide avenues are designed for military patrols, and the traditional homes and mosques have been replaced with state-approved replicas. This physical destruction is accompanied by a host of prohibitions: Uyghurs are forbidden from giving their children traditional Arabic names, men are not allowed to wear beards, and the sale of traditional knives, once a hallmark of the culture, is now banned. This level of control, extending to the most personal aspects of life, can create a chillingly realistic dystopian setting.

Political and social oppression works by stripping a people of their rights and isolating them from the dominant society.

Loss of Citizenship and Legal Status: After World War II, Zainichi Koreans lost their Japanese nationality, leaving them in a state of legal ambiguity. This loss of citizenship meant they were no longer entitled to the same rights and social services as Japanese citizens, making it difficult for them to find employment or even receive medical care. This creation of a permanent “foreigner” class within a society is a powerful source of conflict and can be used to explore themes of belonging and identity.

Segregation and Ghettoization: Discrimination in housing and other areas often leads to the segregation of oppressed groups into ghettos or specific neighborhoods. In Japan, Zainichi Koreans were often confined to “Korean Towns,” where they faced poor living conditions and limited access to public services. This physical separation reinforces social and economic divisions and can be a potent visual symbol of oppression in a fictional world.

Mass Surveillance and Control: Modern technology has given authoritarian regimes unprecedented tools for surveillance and control. In Xinjiang, the Chinese government has created a vast surveillance network, with millions of CCTV cameras, facial recognition technology, and a mandatory surveillance app, “JingWang Weishi,” that monitors citizens’ communications for “dangerous” content. This system is used to identify and detain those deemed untrustworthy, who are then sent to “re-education camps.” The use of such technology creates an atmosphere of constant fear and paranoia, where any deviation from the norm can lead to severe consequences.

Economic oppression works by denying a people the means to provide for themselves, thus making them dependent on the dominant group.

Forced Labor and Economic Exploitation: During World War II, many Koreans were conscripted for forced labor in Japan, where they worked in mines and factories under brutal conditions. In the post-war period, Zainichi Koreans faced widespread discrimination in the job market, which pushed them into low-wage, dangerous, and demeaning industries. This economic exploitation can be a powerful driver of the plot in a fictional story, creating a clear and relatable source of injustice.

The Justification of Injustice

Oppressors rarely see themselves as villains. They construct powerful narratives and ideologies to justify their actions, both to themselves and to the world. Understanding this “why” is crucial for creating believable antagonists and systems.

The Narrative of Inferiority: The most common justification is the claim that the oppressed group is biologically, culturally, or morally inferior. They are painted as “savage,” “uncivilized,” “heathen,” or “unintelligent.” This narrative frames oppression not as an act of cruelty, but as a “civilizing mission” or the natural ordering of society.

The Narrative of Threat: The oppressed group is portrayed as a dangerous threat to the stability, purity, or security of the dominant group. They are accused of being terrorists, criminals, heretics, or spies. This fear-mongering turns the populace against the oppressed group and frames acts of oppression as necessary measures of self-defense.

The Narrative of Scarcity: The oppressed group is blamed for economic hardship. “They are taking our jobs,” “They are a drain on our resources.” This deflects blame from the ruling class and turns the economic anxieties of the majority against the minority, making them a convenient scapegoat.

These ideologies are spread through state-sponsored art, propaganda, revisionist history taught in schools, and religious sermons. They are the software that runs the hardware of oppression.

The Psychology of the Oppressed

The weight of systemic oppression leaves deep psychological scars on individuals and communities. These internal struggles are a powerful source of character motivation and conflict.

Internalized Racism/Self-Hatred: After generations of being told they are inferior, some members of an oppressed group may begin to believe it. They might reject their own culture, change their appearance to better fit the dominant ideal, and feel shame about their heritage. This can create tragic characters and deep rifts within families and communities.

Cultural Resilience: In Shangri-La, some Tibetans have learned to “game the system,” expressing their identity in ways that are permissible within the official guidelines. In Canada, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has become a powerful tool for Indigenous people to reclaim their narratives, promote their languages and cultures, and combat stereotypes. This also includes the secret preservation of knowledge. Elders might pass down forbidden stories and languages to the young in secret. A hidden library might contain the true history of a people, waiting for a time when it can be shared.

Political Activism: Zainichi Korean organizations like Mindan and Chongryon have a long history of activism, campaigning for the rights of Koreans in Japan. This kind of organized resistance can be a major source of conflict and dynamism in a fictional world.

The Complexity of Identity: The experience of oppression can also create deep divisions within a community. Zainichi Koreans, for example, are divided between pro-North and pro-South Korean organizations, and they face the constant dilemma of whether to assimilate into Japanese society or to fight to retain their cultural identity. This internal conflict can add a layer of complexity and realism to the portrayal of an oppressed group.

Every world has its conflicts, its power structures, and its hidden truths. As worldbuilders, we can spend pages detailing the political treaties, economic policies, and dynastic lines that define our societies. Or, we can show it all in a single image: a grand statue defaced with revolutionary graffiti. A forbidden song hummed in a tavern. A play that says what no one dares to speak aloud.

Art can be just decoration for your world or it can become its living voice. It is the dialogue - and often, the argument - between the powerful and the powerless. It’s the story a society tells about itself, and the story its people tell in defiance. By understanding the dynamic interplay between the art of the state and the art of protest, you add depth and believability to your world.

The Art of the State

Every ruling power, from a benevolent council to a tyrannical god-king, crafts a public image. This is the realm of sanctioned art, a form of propaganda designed to legitimize rule, project strength, and forge a shared identity. These are the colossal statues, the grand architectural wonders, the national anthems, and the official portraits that fill the halls of power.

Consider the raw, intimidating sculpture of two wizards enthroned upon a mass of struggling Muggles, under the inscription “MAGIC IS MIGHT”. It is a declaration of ideology. In one glance, we understand the regime’s entire philosophy: supremacy, cruelty, and the celebration of oppression. It is a statement of power meant to awe and terrify.

This state-sponsored art doesn’t have to be overtly menacing. The Statue of Liberty, a gift to the United States, was strategically placed to be the first sight for immigrants arriving in New York. With her torch held high and broken shackles at her feet, she was a colossal artistic statement about a nation’s ideals: freedom, hope, and refuge. Like Emperor Trajan’s massive column in Rome, which meticulously detailed his military victories for all to see, these works are designed to cement a specific narrative in stone and steel. They tell visitors, and their own citizens, “This is who we are. This is what we value. This is our strength.”

When building your world, ask yourself:

What story does my government want to tell? Is it one of divine right, proven by temples and iconography of the gods? Is it one of military might, shown through triumphal arches and statues of generals? Or is it one of peaceful prosperity, reflected in pristine public parks and magnificent civic buildings?

What form does this art take? A nomadic culture might not build statues, but instead tell epic sagas of their founding leaders, weaving their legitimacy into the very fabric of their oral tradition. An advanced technological society might use dazzling holographic displays to broadcast its achievements.

How do people interact with it? Is the emperor’s statue polished daily by adoring citizens, or is it covered in grime and bird droppings, a symbol of a forgotten or resented power? The difference reveals everything about the gap between the state’s desired image and the reality on the ground.

The Artist as a Social Figure

The status of the artist themselves reveals a great deal about a culture’s values. Who creates the art, and how is that person viewed by society?

The Court Artist: In a monarchy or empire, the greatest artists might be attached to the royal court. They are esteemed, well-paid, and their job is to glorify their patron. Like Diego Velázquez in the Spanish court, they have immense prestige but limited creative freedom. Their personal genius must always serve the needs of the state.

The Anonymous Craftsman: In a highly communal or religious society, the art may be more important than the artist. The stonemasons who built the great medieval cathedrals were master craftsmen, but they rarely signed their work. The glory was for God, not for them. This creates a culture where skill is revered, but individualism is not.

The Starving Artist: In a capitalist or highly commercial society, art might be seen as a commodity. Artists are entrepreneurs, struggling for recognition and sales in a competitive market. This can lead to incredible innovation, but also to a culture where art’s value is determined by its price tag rather than its message.

The Rebel Artist: The creator of subversive art is, by definition, a criminal in an oppressive regime. They are a ghost, working in secret, their identity a closely guarded secret. To be revealed is to face imprisonment or death. Their anonymity is their shield.

The Art of the People

Where there is power, there is resistance. And where there is resistance, there is subversive art. This is the art of the people, created in the shadows, on the streets, and in communities. Its purpose is to challenge the official narrative, build solidarity, and keep hope alive in the face of oppression.

The form this art takes is directly related to the level of freedom in a society. In 411 BCE Athens, during a long and wearying war, the playwright Aristophanes could stage Lysistrata - an openly anti-war comedy - without fear of execution. The play was a public forum for dissent, reflecting a society that, while at war, still valued open discussion. Similarly, the anti-Vietnam War movement in the US flourished through popular music and photography, as artists like Bob Dylan harnessed the power of mass media to galvanize a generation.

But what happens when free expression is a death sentence?

The art simply goes underground. It becomes more clever, more symbolic.

In a society of quiet discontent, art becomes allegorical. A folk song about a cruel winter might really be about the long reign of a tyrant. A potter might secretly paint a symbol of a forgotten faith on the bottom of their wares. These are whispers of dissent, easily denied but instantly understood by those who know the code.

As discontent grows, the art becomes bolder. Quick, simple messages, like the Soviet posters aimed at an often-illiterate populace. In your world, this could manifest as flyers printed on a hidden press, or a recurring symbol - like the mockingjay in The Hunger Games - scrawled on walls and train cars. These acts are fleeting but powerful, showing the disillusioned that they are not alone.

In open rebellion, subversive art becomes a weapon. Protest songs become revolutionary anthems shouted at marches. Graffiti moves from back alleys onto the monuments of the state. Street theater openly mocks the ruling class. The art sheds its subtlety and becomes an impassioned call to arms.

When fleshing out your world’s resistance, ask:

What are my people fighting against? And what are they fighting for? The answer will define the themes of their art.

How much risk can they afford? The choice between a coded poem and a firebombed mural depends entirely on the regime’s brutality.

What are their artistic tools and traditions? A culture of weavers might create intricate tapestries depicting their oppression. A society of mages might use fleeting illusions to stage protests that vanish before the guards arrive.

The Medium is the Message

The tools available to a society dictate its primary art forms. The invention of the printing press revolutionized protest by allowing for the mass distribution of flyers and pamphlets. How does your world’s unique technology or magic shape its art?

Magical Art Forms: In a world with magic, art could be spectacular. An “illusionist-bard” could create symphonies of light and sound that tell epic stories. A “geomancer-sculptor” could raise statues from the living rock. A “memory-mage” could weave thoughts and emotions into tapestries for others to experience.

In a cyberpunk world, the ultimate form of protest art might be a piece of viral code that plasters a satirical message across every screen in the city.

The medium itself can be part of the message. Using a forbidden school of magic to create art is an act of defiance. Using the state’s own holographic network to broadcast a revolutionary message is a powerful subversion.

The Gray Area

Not all art is a grand political statement. Much of it exists in the space between the palace and the barricade, reflecting the everyday lives, beliefs, and commercial tastes of the people.

Folk Art: This is the art of the common people, for the common people. It includes the intricate patterns on a hand-carved wooden spoon, the lullabies a mother sings to her child, and the ghost stories told around a campfire. It is often functional, traditional, and deeply rooted in a culture’s shared experience. It shows what people value when the government isn’t looking.

Commercial Art: This is art created to be sold. It reflects the popular tastes and desires of the market. In a bustling city, you might find theaters staging crowd-pleasing comedies, painters selling affordable landscapes to the emerging middle class, and bards singing catchy tunes in taverns for a few coins. This art tells you what the average person finds beautiful, entertaining, or aspirational.

Asemic Art: In societies where the state tightly controls language, definitions, and history, words themselves become a trap. Asemic writing - an open semantic form of writing that looks like text but has no specific meaning - thrives here. It is the visual equivalent of speaking in tongues.

To the ruling class, an asemic manuscript might look like an ancient, untranslatable text or a harmless pattern. But to the artist and the audience, it is a deliberate refusal to be categorized. When the state demands to know “What does this mean?”, the ultimate act of subversion is to reply, “Nothing at all.” In a world where every word is monitored, meaningless ink strokes offer a rare sanctuary of pure, unpoliced interpretation.

Art for Art’s Sake: Privilege or Escapism?

Then there is “neutral” art: the purely aesthetic pursuit of beauty, form, and sensory experience. Ambient soundscapes, geometric tapestries, or abstract paintings that exist simply to be observed.

In worldbuilding, the presence of this “art for art’s sake” tells you immediately about the society’s economic and political stability.

• In a Utopian Society: Purely aesthetic art flourishes because the culture has solved its basic survival and social conflicts. The artists have the luxury of exploring form rather than fighting for rights.

• In a Dystopian Society: Neutral art can be a powerful form of escapism. When reality is too grim to depict, citizens might lose themselves in fractal light shows or harmonious, non-narrative music.

• As State Distraction: A cunning regime might actively fund “neutral” abstract art to flood the cultural space. If the galleries are full of beautiful, meaningless shapes, there is less room on the walls for art that points a finger at the regime’s failings.

When integrating this into your world, ask:

• Who owns the “meaningless” art? Is an asemic text considered a sacred relic of the gods, or is it the scribbling of a rebellious underground avoiding the censors?

• Is neutrality a privilege? If a wealthy merchant commissions a purely decorative, abstract sculpture while the slums are producing fiery protest murals, what does that say about the disconnect between the classes?

• How does the state handle ambiguity? Does a paranoid tyrant ban abstract art simply because they can’t understand it and fear hidden messages?

The Battlefield of Culture

The most fascinating worldbuilding emerges where these two forms of art collide. A society is not just its state art or its protest art; it is the conversation and conflict between them.

Oppressive regimes understand this better than anyone. They create their own propaganda and actively seek to destroy competing narratives. The historical examples of mass book burnings, from ancient China to Nazi Germany, are proof that the written word is seen as powerful and capable of spreading “subversive” thoughts. In your world, a government might burn books; it might also shatter “heretical” sculptures, outlaw certain musical scales, or execute poets. The empty plinths and silent concert halls speak volumes about the regime’s fear.

In more free societies, the conflict is not one of censorship but of attention. The government’s grand, expensive art projects must compete in a “cacophony of voices.” A solemn memorial to the nation’s founding may be completely overshadowed by a viral satirical song or a blockbuster film that critiques the very history that memorial celebrates. In such a world, the government struggles for relevance, instead of control. Its propaganda must be more subtle, perhaps embedding itself in popular entertainment, as the inspiration text notes with the US military’s role in Hollywood.

Consider this dynamic in your world:

How does the state react to protest art? Does it ignore it, destroy it, or co-opt it? Imagine a king taking a popular peasant protest song and rewriting the lyrics to praise his own reign - a clever act of cultural appropriation.

How do the people react to state art? Do they deface it, as mentioned before? Or do they subvert its meaning? Perhaps a statue meant to signify strength becomes a symbol of tyranny, a meeting point for revolutionaries who ironically use the state’s own monument as a backdrop for their plotting.

Conclusion

Art is a shortcut to the heart of your world. The state of a civilization - whether it is stable, oppressed, or on the brink of revolution - is etched into its creations. The contrast between a gleaming, state-funded museum and the vibrant, illegal graffiti covering its outer walls tells a compelling story of social tension.

As you build your worlds, think about the artists. Think about the songs people sing, the stories they tell, the statues they erect, and the symbols they paint in the dead of night. For it is in their art, whether sanctioned or subversive, that you will find the truest reflection of the world you have created. It is the artist’s hand, after all, that paints the picture of their reality.

During the presentation from CEDEC 2025, held from July 22nd to 24th, 3D graphic artists Hidenori Sato and Reiji Katahira from FromSoftware took the stage and explained the background layouts that shaped the impression of the game.

Background layout refers to the process of arranging various elements within a game screen to construct an image. These elements include not only the player character, but also objects such as trees and tents, as well as colors and lighting.

The two ways to improve the quality of such background layouts are to "eliminate monotonous parts" and "balance visual guidance ." In other words, a bad layout has many monotonous parts and unstable visual language, while a good layout has less monotony and a good balance of visual guidance. And the work of improving the quality to make it a good layout is simply a matter of repeatedly making revisions according to this logic.

As a concrete example, Mr. Sato presented two images. The former (left slide) shows a bad layout, and the latter (right slide) shows a good layout.

As specific examples of monotony, a characteristic of bad layouts, the author lists points such as "repetition of the same shape," "composition consisting only of curves," "simple flow," "little variation in brightness and hue," "uneven distribution of elements," and "the destination blending in with the surroundings . "

To improve quality, it becomes necessary to modify these elements.

Effective modifications to the repetition of the same shape include minimizing the use of identical shapes as much as possible, and, when identical shapes are present, varying their orientation and scale. However, it is important not to make them completely randomly different in orientation so as not to negate the effect of guiding the viewer's gaze toward the destination.

For compositions consisting solely of curves, straight lines are added. In the image, linear lighting is placed in the background of the screen, and it also serves to emphasize the destination.

It is said that adding curves is an effective way to change the simplicity of the flow, and that S-shaped pathways like the one in the image is very commonly used.

The symmetrical arrangement was addressed by changing the shape.

While the change in hue remained minimal, the contrast was enhanced by altering the brightness.

While elements are balanced evenly on both sides, the design avoids symmetry by alternately offsetting the elements in depth.

By shining light on the target part, the brightness is increased, enhancing the visual language.

Based on this logic, the diagram illustrates how a good layout is created by correcting each characteristic present in a bad layout one by one. Furthermore, when making corrections to improve quality, checking a limited range as a still image without moving the camera too much makes it easier to spot problems.

Furthermore, while a symmetrical arrangement can have the disadvantage of appearing monotonous, it also has the advantage of creating a strong impression. Therefore, if the monotony can be compensated for by other elements, it is apparently acceptable to use it.

The discussion then shifted to the topic of “strengthening impressions,” which is also the title of the lecture.

As mentioned earlier, while revisions can improve the quality of the layout, that alone is insufficient. This is because even a high-quality layout can cause users to become bored if it contains repetitive content.

There are two ways to keep users engaged.

The first is to make changes that match the world setting . The second is to design changes in impression throughout the entire game . Changes that are too drastic are not good because they will break the consistency with the world setting, but by changing the impression of the screen in conjunction with the game design, it is possible to bring about changes that are accepted by the user and do not make them bored.

An effective way to strengthen an impression is to include elements that create a sense of incongruity .

It is possible to create a sense of incongruity by incorporating elements such as objects, colors, light, effects, and textures that have a design or properties that differ from their surroundings. FromSoftware's works apparently use these elements of incongruity in landmarks and things that occupy a large area on the screen.

Similar techniques have been used in previous FromSoftware titles, such as landmarks, numerous straight lines that occupy a large area of ​​the screen, and distant clouds with different lighting.

Up to this point, we've discussed the quality of the layout and the sense of incongruity needed to keep it engaging, but of course, we can't spend unlimited amounts of money on the layout. There are limitations imposed not only by the labor costs but also by game requirements such as combat and difficulty. Therefore, it becomes necessary to limit the areas where we can improve quality .

FromSoftware refers to areas where they focus on improving quality as "viewpoints ." These are mainly located where the situation changes, with the camera facing the user's path. It seems they concentrate resources on improving quality at the moment when the user's attention is focused on the scenery as the situation changes.

Specific examples created under the logic and constraints described so far have been presented.

Cerulean Coast

This area has a particularly fantastical atmosphere within the game, but there were no specific requirements for it. In other words, the artists were free to work on it with only the visual quality in mind, without any game-related constraints. Cases like this are less difficult for artists.

Following the logic established so far, they add curves to avoid oversimplifying the user flow, arrange elements asymmetrically, and add height only to elements in the center of the screen to guide the user's gaze to the center, among other design elements to improve the quality of the layout.

The glowing flowers are what create a sense of incongruity, bringing a departure from the rest of the layout . While regular flowers and grass are automatically placed using procedural generation, these glowing flowers are important to the layout and are therefore placed manually. The reason for choosing blue for the flowers is to provide a contrast to the adjacent areas, which have a faded, twilight-like feel or a heavy, dark purple impression.

There was also a proposal for a faded twilight image similar to the adjacent area, but it was rejected.

Gravesite Plain

The Gravesite Plain is an area that users will visit for the first time in the DLC "SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE." Therefore, it was necessary to depict a vast field that would leave a stronger impression than other areas.

Initially, they proposed a layout that would eliminate the simplicity of the foreground by adding trees and other elements, but this was rejected because it did not meet the game design requirements. Therefore, they abandoned the idea of ​​modifying the foreground and shifted to a strategy of filling the background with elements.

After adopting the strategy of packing elements into the background, we began improving the quality of the layout.

The current Gravesite Plain was created by correcting issues such as the composition consisting only of straight lines, the repetition of similar patterns, and the lack of memorable landmarks.

Adjustments were made one by one, and finally, because the landmark still didn't have enough presence to counteract the monotony of the foreground, they placed a huge veil. This finally resulted in a background that could compensate for the monotonous foreground.

Similar to the Cerulean Coast, there was a proposal here that wasn't adopted, in which the veil design resembled a curtain. The reason it was rejected was that it wasn't effective in guiding the eye to the landmark.

Scadu Altus

This area is next to the Gravesite Plain, but there were two requirements for it.

There were two requirements for it: to use the same resources as the Gravesite Plain, and for the landmark to occupy a large portion of the screen. This was due to constraints on memory and development time, as well as the need to balance them with existing elements.

As a result of adjustments made to meet the requirements, the layout became unconventional.

They reasoned that if only a portion of the landmark fit on the screen, users would move their cameras, so they decided to evoke the image of viewing a giant painting up close, allowing users to imagine the layout in their minds.

There was another rejected design, which involved placing red lines to represent flames, but it was deemed too flashy and therefore not adopted.

Boss Battles

Next, the microphone was switched from Mr. Sato to Mr. Katahira, who introduced the boss area space of "ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN." In terms of game design, this space is the same regardless of which boss you are fighting. It is a large space for combat, and there are no ledges or other obstacles so as not to hinder any movement, such as movement or attacks.

As a result, the basic requirement for the boss area resulted in a flat map with nothing on it. From here, the boss battle begins, and once a certain amount of health is depleted, the player enters the second half of the battle area.

When transitioning to the second half of the game, there are no cutscenes and the area changes seamlessly, so it's not possible to drastically alter the terrain from the first half. If changes were made that alter the collision configuration, such as the appearance of a giant rock, players or enemy characters could get caught in it and become unable to escape.

As a result, severe restrictions were imposed.

Gladius, Beast of Night

The first area created as the second half of these boss areas was the Gladius, Beast of Night area.

In order to enhance the boss battle experience, the layout was created by prioritizing making a strong impression over improving quality, starting with incorporating elements of incongruity. First, sunrise lighting was combined with an unrealistic sky, and flags were placed there as objects that didn't look out of place even without collision detection, and only then was the quality improved.

As a result of these adjustments, Katahira, having gained confidence in constructing the boss area while adhering to stringent requirements, began designing the remaining boss areas.

While retaining the same design philosophy as the boss area, Mr. Katahira designed the layout for Gaping Jaw, but new requirements arose. There were situations where the enemy's movements were completely invisible when they got behind the placed objects, and the glowing effects of the objects were too bright and interfered with combat. Therefore, he reduced the glowing effects and represented the objects as illusions, allowing the enemy's movements on the other side to be seen.

Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow

The last boss area introduced was Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow.

While imagining a golden dawn in the darkness, they began the design process based on the same shared concept, but here too, additional requirements arose. Many of the attacks in Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow leave a warning on the ground, and placing many visually prominent elements on the ground would put the user at a disadvantage. Therefore, they made the placement of elements more pinpoint and widened the spacing. In addition, they made the attack warnings easier to understand by fading the shaders in front of the camera.

After introducing all seven areas, Mr. Sato mentioned the names of his co-researchers and developers, Naomasa Gyobuzawa and Saori Mizuno of FromSoftware Inc., and the session came to a close.

Clothing is one of the most immediate and powerful tools in a worldbuilder’s arsenal. It is worn culture, a visual language that can communicate the intricacies of an entire civilization without a single word of exposition.

If we look at our own history, fashion is a chronicle. The austere simplicity of Puritanical dress speaks to a society of rigid piety, while the flamboyant silks and powdered wigs of the French aristocracy paint a picture of decadent excess on the brink of revolution. Every choice - from a particular shade of dye to the cut of a sleeve - is a thread in the grand tapestry of a culture.

Yet, for all its potential, clothing in many fantasy and science fiction worlds often falls back on familiar, generic tropes: the ubiquitous leather jerkin, the simple peasant tunic, the vaguely medieval gown. This article will guide you beyond the generic and into the specific. We will explore how to design garments that are visually compelling and also deeply woven into the climate, social structure, and soul of your world.

The Signature Look

Before you design an outfit for a single character, you must first design the “signature look” of their culture. This is the visual shorthand, the archetypal style that springs to mind when one thinks of a specific people and time. You could say it is the embodiment of your culture’s essence.

To create one, begin with consistency. What is the unifying element?

Silhouette: Is the dominant shape flowing and draped, like a Roman toga, or sharply tailored and angular, like a Korean hanbok? Perhaps it’s bulky and layered for warmth, or minimal and revealing for heat.

Color Palette: Is a culture defined by a specific color, like the iconic reds of the Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender? A palette might be dictated by available natural dyes - earth tones from ochre and clay, vibrant blues from a rare coastal mollusk - or by symbolic cultural values.

Key Garment or Accessory: Is there a single item everyone wears in some form? This could be a type of headwrap, a ceremonial sash, a style of sturdy boot, or a pin denoting one’s clan.

Establishing this signature look provides a crucial baseline. It informs you what your people consider beautiful, powerful, or proper. A culture that values rigid order might favor stiff collars and symmetrical patterns, while a society that prizes freedom might embrace loose, flowing fabrics.

From Function to Fashion

Before a garment is beautiful, it must be practical. The origins of clothing lie in the fundamental need for protection from the world. To build an authentic wardrobe for your culture, start with these three pillars of practicality:

Climate: The environment is your first designer. In a sweltering jungle, clothing will be lightweight, breathable, and minimal to combat heat and humidity. In an arctic tundra, it will be layered, insulated, and made from wind-resistant materials like fur and treated leather. A culture in a monsoon region might develop oiled or waxed fabrics to repel constant rain.

Resources: What materials are available? A society of islanders might weave clothing from palm fibers and decorate it with shells and shark teeth. A mountain-dwelling people may rely on the wool of their hardy goats, while a civilization in a giant fungal forest might craft clothes from leathery mushroom caps and glowing moss. Scarcity is as important as abundance. A material that must be imported at great cost, like silk transported across a vast desert, will immediately become a status symbol.

Activity: What do your people do all day? A farmer needs durable clothing that allows for a wide range of motion. A sailor requires garments that won’t easily snag on rigging and will dry quickly. A scholar or bureaucrat, who spends their day sitting, can afford to wear more restrictive or delicate attire. The clothing of a warrior will be designed to integrate with armor, while a courtier’s outfit is designed for the battlefield of social intrigue.

Once you have this functional base, you can begin to layer on the aesthetics. This is where you can blend influences from real-world research. Look at museum collections, historical fashion blogs, and anthropological studies of cultures from similar climates. Use these as a springboard, not a blueprint. Mix the silhouette of a desert caftan with the intricate embroidery of a Nordic tunic. The goal is not to copy, but to understand the why behind a design and adapt it to your unique world.

Armor as Culture

Armor is the most extreme form of functional clothing, but it is never just functional. It is a statement of technology, wealth, and military philosophy.

The Look of the Land: Just like clothing, armor is shaped by its environment. A knight in a hot, sandy desert will not wear the full, heat-trapping plate armor of their temperate-climate counterpart. They might favor lighter mail or lamellar armor worn over breathable fabrics. A culture in a dense jungle might use hardened wood, bone, and lacquered leather, as metal would be too heavy and prone to rust.

The Doctrine of War: Armor reflects how a culture fights. A society that values the individual, heroic champion will produce ornate, highly personalized suits of full plate armor - functional works of art. A civilization that relies on massive, disciplined armies of conscripts will issue simple, mass-produced gear like a basic breastplate and helmet. Their armor values uniformity and cost-effectiveness over individual expression.

Ceremonial and Status Armor: Often, the most beautiful armor is never meant to see a real battle. A king’s parade armor, gilded and intricately engraved, is a symbol of his right to command. It’s not designed to stop a sword, but to inspire awe. In a sci-fi setting, the dress uniforms of a naval officer, with their crisp lines and symbolic medals, serve the exact same purpose.

Wealth and Class: The most obvious distinction is wealth. This can be shown through excess - more fabric in the form of wider skirts, longer trains, or puffier sleeves. It can also be shown through rare materials. In a world where a specific purple dye requires the glands of a thousand tiny sea snails, only royalty can afford to wear it. This extends to intricate brocades, threads of precious metal, or embroidery that takes months to complete. Conversely, don’t fall into the trap of making lower-class clothing drab and plain. While their materials may be coarser (homespun wool vs. fine silk), their garments can still feature complex knitted patterns or colorful embroidery, representing time and skill rather than monetary wealth.

Profession and Role: Uniforms are the clearest example, from a city guard’s livery to a priest’s vestments. But this can be more subtle. Age and Life Stage: Clothing can mark the passage from one phase of life to another. Children might wear simple, unisex smocks, with boys and girls adopting different styles of dress only after a rite of passage into adolescence. The length of a sleeve, the style of a haircut, or the wearing of a specific pin could signify whether a person is unmarried, married, or widowed.

Gender: In our world, clothing has been heavily gendered. In yours, you have the freedom to redefine this. If gender is not a major social divider in your society, perhaps clothing is differentiated by profession or family clan instead. You might treat body shape differences the way a tailor would - simply adding more fabric where needed - rather than creating entirely separate categories of dress. Or, perhaps your world has three or more genders, each with its own distinct sartorial traditions. The way your culture handles gender in its clothing reveals its deepest values on the subject.

Jewelry, Tattoos, and Body Modification

A culture’s aesthetic is not limited to fabric. The ways people adorn their bodies are a powerful and often permanent form of storytelling.

Jewelry as a Signifier: Jewelry can function just like clothing. It can be a mark of wealth (gold and diamonds), profession (a scribe’s signet ring), or affiliation (a soldier’s military insignia). It can also have deep spiritual significance. A necklace of polished river stones might be a sacred charm, or an earring might be worn to ward off evil spirits.

Tattoos and Scarification: These are permanent declarations of identity. A sailor might get a tattoo for every ocean crossed. A warrior might receive a ritual scar for every enemy defeated. A tribe’s complex facial tattoos could tell the entire story of a person’s lineage, social standing, and major life achievements. Because they are permanent, they are often more meaningful than any piece of clothing.

Body Shaping and Modification: Some cultures have practiced head shaping, neck elongation, or foot binding. These practices, often seen as marks of beauty or high status, permanently alter the body. In a fantasy or sci-fi world, this could be even more extreme: elves might practice ear-shaping to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing point, or a bio-tech cult might implant glowing cybernetic lines into their skin.

The Tides of Fashion

A bustling port city where merchants from a dozen nations mingle will have a fast-paced, eclectic fashion scene. An ancient, isolated mountain kingdom might wear the same styles for centuries, with changes so subtle they are imperceptible to outsiders.

Technological and political shifts are powerful drivers of change. The invention of a synthetic dye can democratize a color once reserved for the rich. A revolution can see the opulent styles of the old regime violently rejected in favor of austere, simple clothing. These changes are opportunities for storytelling. As in Avatar, a character trying to infiltrate an enemy camp with a hundred-year-old uniform will find their disguise dangerously out of date.

Subcultures and Identity

Wherever there is a mainstream, there are currents that run against it. Subcultures and counter-cultures often use clothing as their banner, a visual declaration of their beliefs and their opposition to the status quo.

Think of the Punk movement of the 1970s and 80s. The ripped clothes, safety pins, leather, and defiant hairstyles were designed to be a visual affront to mainstream sensibilities, perfectly mirroring their anti-establishment message. Your world can have its own Punks. A group of mages practicing forbidden magic might wear clothing with asymmetrical cuts and unsettling symbols to signal their rebellion against the rigid order of the official Magisterium.

This also works in reverse. A culture whose daily wear has become heavily influenced by a dominant foreign power might cling to “traditional” clothing for festivals, weddings, and religious ceremonies. These garments, often harkening back to a past signature look, become a potent symbol of cultural identity and resistance. For a diasporic community scattered far from its homeland, wearing these traditional clothes is a way to maintain a connection to their roots and to each other.

Walk down the streets of any city on Earth, and you are walking through a library of stories. The buildings are the books. A grand, columned bank speaks of wealth and classical authority. A towering glass skyscraper sings a hymn to modernity and corporate power. A humble brick house, its windows bricked up to avoid an ancient tax, whispers a tale of defiance or poverty.

Architecture is more than shelter. It is the physical manifestation of a culture’s history, its values, its fears, and its ambitions. For a worldbuilder, it is one of the most powerful and beautifully subtle tools for telling a story without a single line of dialogue. A well-realized building or city houses your characters, informs them, shapes them, and reveals the details of their world.

Thus, to build a compelling world, we must learn to think like an architect, a historian, and a geographer all at once. We must understand both how to construct a building and why it was constructed that way. The answers lie in two fundamental areas: the demands of the environment and the dialogue between cultures.

Climate, Geography, and Resources

Before a single cultural flourish is added, a building must first answer to its environment. This is the fundamental grammar of architecture as the form is driven by the primal needs for safety and comfort.

Windows: The most basic driver is climate. In cold regions, buildings must trap heat. In hot regions, they must repel it. This dictates one of the most visible architectural features: the window. Before modern glazing, windows were a massive source of heat loss. Thus, in the frigid norths of our imagination, traditional buildings would have small, few, and deeply recessed windows to preserve precious warmth. The opposite is true in scorching deserts or sun-drenched tropics. The white-washed, cave-like hypóskapha of Santorini, with their tiny, shaded apertures, are a masterclass in staying cool. They burrow into the earth, using the ground itself as insulation. A culture living in a mild, temperate climate, like historical Venice, can afford the opulence of vast, open-air loggias and enormous window-to-wall ratios. Their buildings don’t need to fight a war against the weather.

Roofs: The shape of a roof is a direct response to precipitation. In a world of torrential rains or heavy snow, a steep, sloped roof is a necessity to shed the weight and prevent collapse. A detail-oriented worldbuilder might even consider the specific dangers, like the mini-avalanches that slide off roofs in snowy lands, leading to the invention of “snow fences” at the roof’s edge. Conversely, in arid climates where rain is a rarity, flat roofs are common. They are simpler to build and create valuable extra living or working space, perfect for sleeping on a cool night or drying goods in the sun.

Resources: You cannot build what you do not have. A society in a vast grassland or prairie will not build with stone; they will use sod, wattle-and-daub, or hide. The iconic log cabin is a product of immense, old-growth forests. A city built into the side of a mountain will naturally be a city of stone. If a culture does use a material not found locally - like the marble columns of a temple in a marshland - that tells an immediate story of immense wealth, power, and trade. That marble had to be quarried, carved, and transported, likely at a cost that could have funded an army.

Consider also the indirect drivers. The Sámi “reindeer walkers” live in the brutally cold Arctic, a climate that demands the thickest, most insulated shelter. Yet, they traditionally lived in portable lavvu tents. Why? Because their profession, dictated by the migratory patterns of their food source, overrode the direct demands of the climate. Their architecture wasn’t just about surviving the cold; it was about surviving the cold while on the move.

The Language of Interiors

The exterior of a building tells you about a culture’s relationship with its environment and its neighbors. The interior tells you how its people actually live, work, and think.

Public vs. Private Space: How are rooms divided? A culture that highly values family and community might have large, open central living areas where cooking, eating, and socializing all happen together. Private bedrooms might be small and functional. Conversely, a society that prizes privacy and individuality might have a labyrinthine layout of smaller, separate rooms, each with its own purpose.

Hierarchy and Flow: The layout of a building can enforce a social hierarchy. In a great castle, the path from the main gate to the throne room is a long and intimidating journey through courtyards, antechambers, and halls lined with guards. It is designed to make a visitor feel small and to reinforce the king’s power. In contrast, the circular, open design of a Quaker meeting house, with benches facing the center, reflects an egalitarian belief that every person has an equal connection to the divine.

Decoration as Data: The decorations on the walls are a direct line into a culture’s soul. Are the walls bare and austere, suggesting a culture that shuns materialism? Are they covered in intricate, abstract patterns, as in many Islamic traditions that avoid depicting living beings? Or are they filled with portraits of ancestors, showing a deep reverence for lineage and history?

A Dialogue of Culture, Conquest, and Belief

Once a building has satisfied the needs of its environment, it begins to speak the language of its people and, crucially, buildings are rarely the product of a single, pure culture. They are hybrids, shaped by conquest, trade, competition, and belief.

Assimilation and Conquest: History is a story of colliding peoples, and their architecture is the fossil record of those collisions. The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is one of the world’s most stunning examples. Erected by the conquering Umayyad Caliphate, it wasn’t built in a vacuum. It was built in a land with deep Byzantine and Sassanian artistic traditions. The conquerors, not yet having a fully-formed “Islamic style,” employed local craftsmen. The result is a magnificent hybrid: a building with an Islamic function and calligraphic inscriptions, but with a structure and decorative motifs - the mosaics, the vegetal patterns, the octagonal shape - that speak to the artistic traditions of the very empires they had just defeated.

For a worldbuilder, this is a goldmine. When your expanding empire conquers a new territory, do they raze the old cities to the ground? Or do they, like the Muslims in Jerusalem or the Ottomans in Constantinople, appropriate the existing structures? Imagine a grand cathedral of the Sun God converted into a temple for the Moon Goddess. The main structure remains, but the sunburst iconography is plastered over with silver crescents, the stained-glass windows are replaced, and the orientation of the pews is shifted to face a new direction. The building becomes a living chronicle of its own conquest.

Competition and One-Upmanship: Sometimes, architecture isn’t about assimilation, but about rivalry. When the Ottomans captured Constantinople, they gained the Hagia Sophia, a Christian cathedral of such breathtaking scale and engineering that it became a source of both awe and anxiety. For the next century, Ottoman architects, like the legendary Sinan the Great, were driven by a singular obsession: to build a mosque that would surpass it. The Mosque of Selim II was his masterpiece, a marvel of mathematical harmony designed in direct competition with the ancient cathedral. The builders even chose a location on higher ground so that its dome, while not as large, would sit higher above sea level than the Hagia Sophia’s. This is a declaration of victory, a rivalry played out in limestone and mortar.

From Buildings to Cities

Zooming out from a single building, the layout of an entire city reveals the grand-scale priorities of a civilization.

The Organic City: Many ancient cities, like Rome or London, grew organically over centuries. Their streets are a chaotic, winding maze that follows old footpaths and property lines. These cities feel lived-in, layered, and full of history. They are difficult to navigate for outsiders but intimately familiar to their inhabitants.

The Grid City: A planned city built on a grid system, like Manhattan or ancient Roman military camps, speaks of order, logic, and control. It is easy to navigate, easy to divide, and easy to police. A grid layout suggests a society that values efficiency and central planning, whether for commerce or for military control.

The Hub-and-Spoke City: A city designed with a central point (a palace, a temple, a corporate headquarters) and major roads radiating outwards is a powerful statement of what is most important. All roads lead to the center of power. This design forces every citizen to orient their lives, both physically and psychologically, around the central authority.

Technology, Hubris, and the Scars of Progress

What happens when technology allows a culture to ignore the rules of environment and resource? Their architecture tells a new kind of story: one of power, ambition, and sometimes, catastrophic failure.

Architecture as Defiance: The glass-fronted skyscrapers of Doha, Qatar, are a statement. In a desert climate that averages 113°F (45°C), building a tower of glass is an act of pure defiance against the sun. It is only possible because of immense wealth (from oil) and technology (air conditioning). The buildings are a testament not to clever adaptation, but to the power to brute-force a solution. They proclaim, “We are so powerful, we no longer need to obey the sun.”

In your sci-fi world, a city built under the ocean or floating in the toxic atmosphere of a gas giant tells a similar story. The technology required is immense, and the architecture itself - the thickness of the dome, the complexity of the life-support systems - is a constant reminder of the hostile environment just outside the walls.

The Scars of Hubris: Progress has a dark side. The cautionary tale of Jakarta is a worldbuilder’s dream. In a rush to modernize, a city was built on swampy marshland without proper planning. Now, weighed down by its own concrete ambitions and threatened by rising sea levels, the city is sinking. The very architecture is a symbol of a fatal flaw in the nation’s character: ambition outstripping wisdom. The government’s solution - to abandon the city and build a new capital from scratch - is a world-shaking event born from an architectural and engineering disaster. This is a perfect template for a fallen civilization or a dystopian future, where the ruins of past mistakes are an unavoidable part of the landscape.

Non-Human Architecture: How would the architecture of a non-human species differ?

A race of winged beings might not need stairs or doors on the first floor, leading to cities of soaring towers connected by bridges and balconies. Their concept of a “ground floor” would be completely different.

A subterranean species might carve their cities into the rock, with architecture defined by the absence of material rather than the addition of it. They would have no need for roofs or windows.

An amphibious race might build cities that are half-submerged, with flooded lower levels and dry upper causeways, their design flowing seamlessly between water and land.

Conclusion

Every structure in your world has a story to tell. By asking the right questions, you can uncover that story and weave it into the fabric of your narrative.

Where is it?

How does the climate and geography shape its core design?

What is it made of?

What local resources were used?

If the materials are exotic, who was powerful enough to bring them here, and why?

Who built it, and why?

How does its purpose define its layout?

Whose story does it tell?

How has it aged?

Look at the buildings in your world as characters. They have pasts. They have scars. They are the silent storytellers, and if you listen closely, they will tell you everything you need to know.

Of all the elements we use to build our worlds, none is more fundamental, more intimate, than food. It is the fuel of empires and the solace of the poor. A grand royal feast, laden with roasted meats and spiced wines, tells a story of power, wealth, and political alliance. A simple bowl of millet shared by a farming family tells an equally profound story of subsistence, community, and hardship.

Food is never just food. It is history, geography, technology, and religion served on a single plate. As we saw in the world of Firefly, a single, out-of-place strawberry can communicate more about scarcity and value than a page of exposition. To truly understand a world, you must first understand how it feeds itself. By exploring a culture’s relationship with its agriculture and its cuisine, we unearth the very roots of its identity.

From Wild Seed to Civilization

Before your characters can sit down to a meal, that meal must first be grown. The journey from a wild plant to a staple crop is the journey of civilization itself. This process is a slow, generational conversation between a people and their environment.

The Great Shift: For tens of thousands of years, our ancestors were nomads, following the food. The domestication of plants like wheat, rice, and corn was a revolution. It required people to notice a beneficial mutation - like a wheat stalk with a tougher stem that didn’t shatter and spill its seeds - and to selectively cultivate it. This slow process anchored people to the land. The hunter-gatherer’s sprawling territory was replaced by the farmer’s intensively managed field. This is the birth of the village, the town, and eventually, the city.

The Surplus Engine: Agriculture’s greatest gift was surplus. For the first time, a small group of people could produce enough food to feed many. This surplus is the engine of social complexity. It frees others from the fields to become artisans, soldiers, priests, and kings. The size of a culture’s food surplus directly dictates its ability to support a standing army, build monumental architecture, or develop intricate philosophies. The carrying capacity of your world’s land is not a fixed number; it is a function of its agricultural technology. A hundred acres of river valley might support ten hunter-gatherers, a hundred feudal farmers, or a thousand citizens of an industrial nation.

When building your world, ask:

• What plants (or creatures) were domesticated? Was it a long and difficult process, or did a magical intervention speed it up?

• How advanced is their agriculture? Do they use digging sticks and natural irrigation, or have they developed complex canals, animal-drawn plows, or even magical methods of fertilization?

• Who works the land, and who owns the surplus? This single question will define your world’s primary power structure, be it a feudal system where lords own the harvest, a slave state built on forced labor, or a corporate dystopia where mega-farms feed the masses.

The Staple

Every culture has a staple food - a starchy, reliable crop that forms the bedrock of its diet. This staple is more than just sustenance; it dictates the rhythm of daily life and the very character of the cuisine. How the preparation of a single food item can tell a complex story.

For example, Rice:

Simple Gruel or Porridge: The most basic preparation. Broken rice grains are boiled in water until they form a thick, soupy gruel (like congee). This is the food of subsistence, survival, and scarcity. It stretches a small amount of grain to its absolute limit, providing maximum sustenance for minimal resources. It speaks of a culture that is poor, a family that is frugal, or a society recovering from a famine. There are no complex tools required, only a pot and a fire.

Steamed or Boiled Rice: A bowl of perfectly cooked, individual rice grains implies a significant step up in prosperity and culinary skill. It requires a better quality of whole grain and the knowledge to cook it properly so it doesn’t turn to mush. This is the food of a stable, everyday life. It is the reliable foundation upon which other, more flavorful dishes are built. The presence of a simple bowl of good rice is a quiet symbol of sufficiency and home.

Complex Rice Dishes: An ornate, labor-intensive dish like a paella, risotto, or biryani is not an everyday meal. These preparations require both perfect rice and a host of other expensive and often imported ingredients: rare spices like saffron, high-quality meats or seafood, and specialized cooking vessels. They demand time, skill, and wealth. This is the food of festivals, of the rich, or of a highly specialized chef. The distinction between a common “cook” and a revered “chef” can be seen in their ability to produce such a complex and layered dish.

Apply this logic to any staple. A culture built on potatoes - which can be stored for months in a simple cellar - will have a different sense of food security than one built on a tropical fruit that spoils in days. A society dependent on rice, which requires immense amounts of water and labor-intensive paddy farming, will develop a different social structure and relationship to water than a culture that grows drought-resistant millet.

The Hearth and the Kitchen

How a culture cooks is as important as what it cooks. The available technology and fuel shape the flavors, textures, and rituals of a cuisine.

Open Fire: The most primal method. A culture that cooks primarily over open flames will have a cuisine dominated by roasting, grilling, and smoking. This is the food of hunter-gatherer societies, military camps, and rustic frontiers. The flavor of wood smoke itself becomes a key ingredient.

The Oven or Tandoor: The ability to create an enclosed, high-heat environment is a technological leap. It allows for baking, a process that creates a huge variety of new foods, from bread to pies. A culture with a strong baking tradition is one that is settled, with access to fuel and the resources to build permanent structures.

Pots and Stoves: The development of pottery or metallurgy allows for boiling, stewing, and simmering. This enables the creation of complex soups, stews, and sauces that can stretch ingredients and provide warmth. A culture in a cold climate might develop a rich tradition of hearty, slow-cooked stews, which become central to their sense of comfort and community.

Salting and Curing: Common in coastal or trade-rich cultures with access to salt. Creates intensely flavored, long-lasting meats and fish.

Drying and Smoking: Utilized by cultures in arid or windy climates.

Pickling and Fermenting: A method that not only preserves food but creates entirely new, complex flavors. Think of kimchi, sauerkraut, or yogurt. A culture with a strong fermentation tradition might be seen as resourceful and patient.

Status, Power, and Taboo

What people eat, and what they refuse to eat, is a powerful indicator of their social standing, their political landscape, and their deepest beliefs.

Food as Status: In any society with inequality, the best food flows to the top. As seen in the film Seven Samurai, the desperate farmers eat millet while they offer their precious rice to the samurai they hope to hire. In your world, is the ruling class distinguished by their consumption of meat while the poor eat gruel? Do they have access to rare spices from across the sea, or fresh food magically preserved while the masses eat salted rations? Scarcity creates value, and the powerful will always control what is scarce.

Food as Taboo: What a culture deems inedible tells you about its soul. These taboos are rarely arbitrary.

Religious/Sacred: Hindus do not eat cows because the animal is sacred. In your world, perhaps the “sky-bison” is a sacred messenger of the gods, and to eat one is the highest blasphemy.

Health/Purity: The historical prohibition of pork in some religions stemmed from legitimate concerns over disease in a pre-refrigeration world. Perhaps a plague in your world’s history, carried by a certain animal, has made it permanently taboo.

Sentimental: Most Western cultures find the idea of eating dogs or horses abhorrent because they are seen as companions. What animals are considered “friends” in your world, and what are considered “food”? The answer reveals a great deal about a culture’s emotional landscape.

Libations and Intoxicants

What people drink is as revealing as what they eat. The creation and consumption of alcoholic or psychoactive beverages are deeply tied to agriculture, religion, and social ritual.

The Source Material: What is their drink made from? A society in a grape-growing region will develop wine. A grain-based agricultural society will have beer or whiskey. A culture in a cold, northern climate might ferment honey into mead or apples into cider. The local geography dictates the local drink.

The Social Role: Is drinking a communal activity, central to festivals and taverns? Or is it a refined, solitary pursuit for the elite? In some cultures, getting drunk is a celebrated release; in others, it’s a social taboo. A “Tea Ceremony” has a very different cultural meaning than a “Keg Stand.”

Religious Significance: Many religions use alcohol in their most sacred rites, like the Christian Eucharist. Perhaps a hallucinogenic tea is used by shamans to commune with the spirit world, making its consumption a highly controlled, religious act.

Sci-Fi Sustenance and Magical Meals

In a world of advanced technology or magic, the fundamental rules of food can change dramatically.

The Nutrient Paste: In a dystopian sci-fi setting, food might be reduced to its most basic function: fuel. A bland, perfectly balanced nutrient paste, dispensed from a machine, signifies a society that has lost its connection to culture and pleasure. The black market trade in “real food” like an apple or a piece of cheese would be a powerful plot point.

Magical Agriculture: What if druids can make crops grow overnight? What if mages can conjure water in the desert? This could lead to a post-scarcity utopia, or it could concentrate all food production in the hands of a magical elite, giving them absolute power over the non-magical populace.

Lab-Grown and Synthetic: In a high-tech world, meat might be grown in a vat and vegetables printed in a 3D fabricator. This solves ethical and environmental problems, but what is lost? A culture might arise that fetishizes “natural” or “heritage” foods, with the ultra-rich paying a fortune for a real, soil-grown tomato.

Conclusion

Finally, bring it all down to the individual. How a character eats can be a more potent piece of characterization than a page of internal monologue.

Consider the contrast: a woman eating delicately with a fork and knife versus a man tearing at his food with his hands. Without any other information, we begin to build a story. She is likely wealthy, a member of the elite, comfortable and secure. He is likely poor, starving, or from a “barbaric” culture outside the norms of “civilized” society. He is protective of his food; she takes hers for granted. Now, reverse it. If the well-dressed woman suddenly begins guarding her plate and eating with desperation, we know a dramatic change of fortune has occurred.

Feasts are a microcosm of the social order. The feast at Winterfell in A Song of Ice and Fire is a masterclass in this. We see the political reason for the feast (to welcome the king), but the real story is told through the characters’ interactions with it. Jon Snow’s placement away from the high table, his excessive drinking, and his discomfort speak volumes about his status as a bastard and the cold tensions between the Northern and Southern families. The feast isn’t just a party; it’s the entire social hierarchy of Westeros laid bare.

As you write, let your characters eat. Let them drink. Are they savoring a rare treat or choking down a tasteless nutrient paste? Are they sharing generously or hoarding their portion? Do they know which of the twelve ceremonial spoons to use, or do they look on in confusion? Their behavior at the table is a window into their past, their present, and their place in the world you have so carefully built. And as always, best for last:

When we think of conflict in our worlds, our minds leap to the clash of steel, the roar of dragons, and the crackle of spells. We envision the grand campaigns, the heroic last stands, and the epic sieges. But these are merely the fevers of a world. The underlying health, the chronic illnesses, the intricate web of relationships that determine when and why these fevers spike are the domain of diplomacy.

Too often the relationship between our fictional nations is a binary switch: “at war” or “not at war.” This is like describing a family as either “having a reunion” or “not having a reunion,” ignoring the simmering resentments, the shared histories, the secret affections, and the tangled finances that define their everyday existence.

Diplomacy is the art of navigating these complexities.

Using Treaties As Plot Hooks

The first act of peace is often a declaration of who won the last war. A peace treaty therefore, is a scar. It’s a physical reminder of a past wound, and it often dictates the terms of the next conflict. When building your world, let the two nations be at war for twenty years ago and then draft the treaty to end it.

Consider the possibilities:

The Punitive Peace: Did the victor impose ruinous terms, like the Treaty of Versailles? Perhaps the Kingdom of Aeridor was forced to cede its richest silver mines to the Valerium Empire. Now, a generation later, Aeridor is impoverished and seething. A populist leader is rising, preaching a gospel of national pride and reclaiming their stolen heritage. The “Mines of Sorrow” are a rallying cry, and every Valerian merchant is viewed with suspicion. Your story might begin with the poisonous peace that followed.

The Unenforceable Ransom: What if, like John II of France, a captured king signed a treaty his own people refuse to honor? Imagine the Elven King is held hostage by the Dwarves of the Iron Peaks, who demand a ransom of one million sun-crystals. But the Elven council, led by the king’s ambitious brother, claims the demand is impossible to meet and uses the crisis to consolidate their own power. Is the king a tragic figure abandoned by his people? Or was he a tyrant whose capture is seen as a blessing in disguise? The Dwarves are left with a worthless hostage and a burning desire for retribution.

The Laughably Optimistic Treaty: As the “Perpetual Peace” and “Thirty Years’ Peace” of history show, giving a treaty a long-term name is practically an invitation for it to fail. Perhaps your Elves and Orcs signed the “Millennial Accord.” It lasted twelve years. Now, both sides ironically refer to any minor skirmish as “violating the spirit of the Accord.” It’s become a bitter joke, a piece of political theater that everyone knows is a lie. This creates deep cynicism, promises are meaningless and everyone is just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

A treaty is a story waiting to be told, so ask yourself: Who signed it? Who feels betrayed by it? And who is quietly looking for a loophole to exploit?

Trade And Tribute

Economic power can be a far more insidious and effective tool than an army. Controlling a resource, a trade route, or a market is to have your hand on the throat of another nation.

When designing your world’s diplomatic landscape, map out the flow of goods:

Choke Points and Monopolies: Is there a single pass through the Dragon’s Tooth Mountains? The small, unassuming nation of hill-folk who control it may be courted by massive empires on either side. They don’t need an army, but savvy negotiators. What if a single guild in a coastal city-state has perfected the art of crafting magical lenses? They can trade this technology for defense pacts, grain shipments, and political favors, effectively making superpowers their clients.

The Diplomatic Embargo: Think like Athens against Megara. Perhaps the Mage’s Collective of Silverwood refuses to sell enchanted lumber to the seafaring Republic of Skye after they desecrated a sacred grove. Skye’s legendary fleet is now slowly rotting in port. They can’t go to war as Silverwood is a landlocked, well-defended ally of their rivals, so they must engage in smuggling, espionage, and political manoeuvring to get the ban lifted. Your heroes could be the smugglers, the spies, or the diplomats trying to broker a deal.

Crippling Concessions: Alexios I bought Byzantine security from the Venetians by giving them the keys to the empire’s economy. What if the Sun-King of Helios, to fund his crusade against the Shadowlands, granted the Dwarven banking clans exclusive, tax-free trading rights in his capital? A century later, the monarchy is broke, the local merchant class is in ruins, and the Dwarven quarter is a state-within-a-state, protected by its own laws and loyal only to its clan chiefs. The king’s great-grandson now rules a hollow crown, and the tension in the capital is a lit fuse.

Commerce creates dependencies, and dependency is the ultimate diplomatic lever. A nation that can’t feed its people, arm its soldiers, or build its ships without another’s help is a nation in chains, no matter how proudly its banners fly.

Diplomatic Marriages

Before there were ambassadors, there were in-laws. As the intricate family trees of European royalty show, a strategic marriage could be worth more than a dozen legions. It creates alliances, legitimizes claims, and plants a friendly (or not-so-friendly) face in a rival’s court.

Salt your world’s history with these arrangements.

The Unexpected Power Player: A powerful kingdom marries its third son to a princess from a minor barony, a political afterthought. But this princess, like Philippa of Hainaut, turns out to be brilliant, ruthless, and charismatic. She shores up her husband’s weak rule, navigates the treacherous court, and turns her “minor” homeland into a key partner. The great powers who dismissed her are now scrambling to deal with a new force they inadvertently created.

The Succession Crisis Bomb: Two generations ago, the Prince of Oakhaven married the second daughter of the Emperor of the Sunstone Throne. It was a minor event. Now, the Emperor has died childless. Suddenly, the quiet, bookish King of Oakhaven has, through his wife, one of the strongest claims to the most powerful throne on the continent. Oakhaven’s enemies and the Emperor’s other distant relatives are now locked in a frantic race of assassination, bribery, and alliance-building to prevent this from happening. The marriage contract, once gathering dust in an archive, is now the most important document in the world.

A Web of Conflicting Loyalties: The King of the North is married to the sister of the Duke of the Western Marches. The Duke’s daughter is betrothed to the heir of the Southern Isles. When the North and the Southern Isles go to war, whose side does the Duke take? His liege and brother-in-law, or his future son-in-law and the alliance that will secure his family’s future? Every character is trapped in a web of personal affection and political obligation.

The Player and the Pawns

Diplomacy is conducted by people. These agents, from the highest ambassador to the lowest spy, are the perfect protagonists for stories of intrigue.

The Ambassador: The official face of their nation in a foreign court. Their life is a constant performance, a balancing act of charm, perception, and resilience. An embassy is a piece of sovereign soil in a hostile land, a center for negotiation, and almost always, a nest of spies.

The Envoy or Herald: A specialist sent for a single, high-stakes purpose: to deliver an ultimatum, negotiate a specific clause, or arrange a royal marriage. Unlike the ambassador, who plays the long game, the envoy’s mission is often a tense, all-or-nothing affair.

The Spy: The unseen hand of diplomacy. While the ambassador dines with the king, the spy is bribing a servant to learn the king’s secrets. They engage in sabotage, spread misinformation, and steal intelligence. The spymaster, who directs these operations, is often one of the most powerful and feared figures in a government.

Culture and Ideology as Weapons

Sometimes the most effective form of diplomacy is changing the hearts and minds of an enemy’s population through soft power.

Cultural Exports: As America used blue jeans and rock-and-roll during the Cold War, your nations can use their culture as a tool. A libertine, artistic republic might export its enthralling plays and music to a rigid, ascetic empire, “corrupting” the youth and eroding the state’s strict control. The empire, in turn, might dismiss this art as decadent and profane, creating a cultural cold war.

Propaganda: How does each nation portray the other to its own people? The state-sponsored stories and art will be filled with carefully crafted narratives. The elves are painted as aloof and untrustworthy, the dwarves as greedy and materialistic, the orcs as savage beasts. This propaganda justifies past grievances and paves the way for future conflicts by dehumanising the enemy.

Ideological Blocs: Nations often form mutual defense alliances because they share a fundamental worldview. A “League of Free Cities” might band together against an expansionist “Divine Hegemony.” This turns a simple political struggle into a grand-scale conflict of ideologies, where each side believes they are fighting for the very soul of the world.

Diplomacy with the ‘Other’

In fantasy and sci-fi, diplomacy often extends beyond negotiating with other human-like states. How do you negotiate with beings whose values, biology, and perception of time are completely alien?

Non-Human Intelligence: Think beyond human concepts of law and value. How does a human king sign a treaty with a dragon that lives for ten thousand years and views the entire kingdom as its temporary property? What constitutes a “binding agreement” with a hive-mind insectoid race that has no concept of individuality? What trade goods would a crystalline, non-biological entity even want?

Non-State Actors: Diplomacy isn’t just for governments. A kingdom may need to negotiate with a powerful, independent entity within its borders. This could be a mega-corporation for mining rights, a religious order to access a holy site, or even a powerful monster to keep it from terrorizing a region. These entities play by their own rules and can be as powerful as any nation-state.

Conclusion

You don’t need to map out fifteen hundred fiefdoms like the Holy Roman Empire to achieve this depth. Start with a few key relationships and let them breathe. Map out the main players. Look at the relationships between the players and within their countries.

This is the living tissue of a world. Through diplomacy, you move beyond simple maps and create a world where history is a constant, nagging presence at the negotiating table, in the royal bedchamber, and on the bloody battlefield. And just so you preserve this in mind better, here is another diagram:

The marble-halled courtroom where robed advocates debate precedent, the dusty circle where trial by combat is decided with blood and steel, the quiet chamber where a Truth-Stone glows to reveal a lie.

A trial is never just a trial.

It is a story a society tells about itself and a window into the soul of its world. We often focus on the laws themselves, the grand edicts of kings and councils. But the true character of a society is revealed in its machinery of justice: how it defines fairness, accuses its citizens, determines guilt, and metes out punishment.

One could say that the legal system is the operating system of your society. It underpins everything from property rights and trade contracts to personal freedoms and the definition of a crime. It is the framework that gives teeth to your politics, form to your ethics, and structure to your conflicts. By designing a believable justice system, you create a world where consequences are real, and your characters have to actually struggle with the system.

The Source of Law

Before a law can be broken, it must be made. The source of a society’s legal authority is a direct reflection of its power structure and a natural wellspring of conflict.

Divine Law: The law comes from the gods. It is absolute, eternal, and recorded in sacred texts. Justice is administered by a priesthood, and crimes are seen as sins. To break the law is both a crime against the state and a heresy against heaven itself. This creates a rigid, theocratic society where legal interpretation and religious dogma are one and the same. A conflict between two contradictory divine commandments could create a massive schism.

Monarchical Law: The law is the will of the sovereign for he is the state. The king’s word is literally law. This system is efficient but volatile, its stability entirely dependent on the wisdom, sanity, and whims of a single individual. What happens when a just king is succeeded by a cruel tyrant? The entire legal landscape can change overnight.

Legislative Law: Law is a product of debate and compromise, created by an elected or appointed body like a parliament or senate. This system is often complex, slow-moving, and rife with loopholes that clever lawyers can exploit. It reflects a society that values process and (in theory) representation. The conflict here is against a faceless, frustrating bureaucracy or a law passed by a rival political faction.

Common Law: Law is built on precedent. The decisions of past judges create a living, evolving body of law. Tradition is paramount. This creates a system that is stable but can also be conservative and slow to adapt to new circumstances (like the invention of a new technology or school of magic). A landmark case that overturns a centuries-old precedent would be a world-shaking event.

What is the Goal?

When a law is broken, what is the justice system trying to achieve?

Retributive Justice: The goal is punishment. This is the logic of “an eye for an eye.” The system is designed to make the criminal suffer in a way that is proportional to their crime. This leads to the brutal and symbolic executions we’ve discussed, as well as punishments like flogging, branding, or punitive amputation. It’s a system focused on vengeance.

Restorative Justice: The goal is to heal the harm done. The focus is on the victim and the community. Instead of imprisonment, a thief might be sentenced to work for the person they stole from until the debt is repaid. A person who damaged community property would be tasked with its repair. This system values reconciliation and social cohesion over punishment.

Rehabilitative Justice: The goal is to “fix” the criminal and reintegrate them into society. This is a more modern concept, focused on education, therapy, or magical “mind-healing.” It suggests a society that believes people can change, but it can also have a sinister side. What if “rehabilitation” is actually a form of magical brainwashing to ensure model citizens?

Utilitarian Justice: The goal is simply to maintain order and protect society. Individuals are secondary to the stability of the whole. A person might be imprisoned because they are dangerously unstable, instead of being evil. A person with uncontrollable magic might be exiled or executed as a pragmatic necessity to prevent a catastrophe.

The Agents of the Law

A justice system is made of people, and their roles, status, and power define how justice feels to the average citizen.

Enforcers: Who finds the criminals? Are they a professional, city-wide “Watch,” a militarized state police force, or deputized citizens? Perhaps in a feudal society, the local lord’s men-at-arms are the only law. In a high-magic world, you might have an order of “Justicars” with the magical authority to read minds or compel truth.

Advocates: Are there lawyers? In some societies, they are revered scholars of the law, the only ones who can navigate a complex system. In others, they are seen as parasitic “word-twisters” who help the guilty go free. A society might have no lawyers at all, forcing every citizen to speak for themselves before a judge, a terrifying prospect for the uneducated.

Judges: Who has the final say? Is it a single, royally-appointed magistrate? A jury of one’s peers? A council of village elders? Perhaps judgment is rendered by a non-human entity like a sacred oracle, an ancestral spirit, or a complex magical artifact. The nature of the judge determines whether a trial is a process of logic, a plea for empathy, or a ritual to be performed.

The Unwritten Laws

Any formal legal system contains unwritten laws, which govern social conflicts outside of the formal justice system. These are the social codes, honor systems, and deep-seated taboos that govern behavior as strongly as any king’s decree.

Honor Codes: The code of chivalry, the pirate’s code, or the warrior’s path of a nomadic tribe. These are rules of conduct specific to a subculture. Breaking them leads to ostracism, a duel, or expulsion from the group.

Religious Taboos: These are prohibitions so deeply ingrained they are never questioned. In a society that worships a Moon Goddess, working during a full moon might be unthinkable. It’s not illegal in a formal sense, but anyone who does it is seen as cursed or insane.

Guest-Right: A near-universal concept in ancient cultures. The law of hospitality dictates that a host must protect their guest, and a guest must not harm their host. Violating this sacred trust is a stain on one’s honor that can lead to blood feuds and multi-generational conflict.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the scales of justice are the scales upon which your entire world is weighed. A well-crafted legal system is more than just background dressing; it is an active, formidable participant in your narrative. Define the origins of your laws, the philosophical goals of your punishments, the people who wield the gavel, and the unspoken taboos that bind communities together. Create a living, breathing culture. That way you shall create a crucible for your characters. Every rigid law is a boundary for a protagonist to push against; every corrupt enforcer is an obstacle to overcome; every clash between state law and unwritten honor is a profound moral dilemma waiting to unfold. When you design the machinery of justice you are setting the stage for the greatest conflicts your world will ever see. Court is adjourned, revise the legal structure, and let the story begin!

Beneath the shimmering magic systems, sprawling histories of forgotten kings, and the unique biology of our imagined creatures, an invisible engine hums, powering the daily lives of everyone from the lowliest farmer to the most powerful archmage.

That engine is economics.

Many writers, except George R. R. Martin obviously, shy away from it, believing it to be a dry, number-filled affair best left in textbooks. But economics is more than just money. It is scarcity. It is interaction. It is institutions. All of which are the building blocks of conflict, character motivation, and societal structure.

A well-considered economy makes a world feel like a living, breathing place, instead of a painted backdrop. Consider the following: What do people want? What do they have to do to get it? And what happens when they can’t? Getting the economics right, or at least coherent, is the difference between a world that is merely described and a world that is truly believable.

The Foundation

What is valuable in your world?

Value is born from scarcity. Something is valuable if it is both desired and in limited supply. This is the first and most critical test for your world’s internal logic.

Harry Potter, for example, fails this test. Magic seems to solve many problems of scarcity, yet the economy mirrors our own non-magical one. This creates inconsistencies. If you can transfigure a rock into a comfortable sofa, why would anyone bother with the craft of furniture making? The price of a couch should plummet to near zero.

A wand is an object of immense value. It’s essential for most wizards, requires rare magical components, and is crafted by a highly specialized artisan. By all economic logic, a wand should cost a fortune like a down payment on a house. Yet because of the the story’s need for Harry to afford a wand, Rowling overrode the economic reality of the world, but still made him rich.

To avoid this, start by asking yourself a series of fundamental questions:

What is essential for survival? Food, water, shelter, medicine. If your world is an arid desert, water is both a drink and wealth. Control of a well is control of a city.

What grants power or status? In a world threatened by soul-devouring wraiths, a lantern forged with a protective charm is more valuable than a bag of gold. In a galactic empire, faster-than-light fuel or the rights to a jump-gate are the ultimate prizes.

What does your magic/technology make easy? If healing magic is common, doctors might be less revered, and injuries less feared. If teleportation is a simple cantrip, property values in prime locations would crater. Why pay a premium to live in the city center when you can live in a beautiful, remote valley and be at your office in a flash?

What does your magic/technology leave difficult? Perhaps magic cannot create life, making fertile livestock and seeds incredibly precious. Perhaps technology cannot replicate a unique, handcrafted piece of art, making artisans revered. These limitations are where your world’s economy finds its unique shape.

Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom succeeds where Harry Potter falters because the limits of its magic are clear, and the consequences are explored. When the dead rise and overrun the countryside, farming becomes lethally dangerous. The economy logically shifts; people abandon their fields and turn to fishing, a safer profession. The cataclysm fundamentally rewires how society feeds itself.

Economic Models and Class Structure

The way a society organizes its production and distributes its wealth defines its class structure. Your economic model determines who holds power, who works for whom, and the social mobility (or lack thereof) of your characters.

Feudalism/Manorialism: The dominant model in most pre-industrial fantasy. Land is the primary source of wealth and is owned by a small noble class. The vast majority of the population are serfs or peasants who work the land in exchange for protection. There is almost no social mobility. Wealth is measured in land and loyalty, not coin. Basically a rigid, hierarchical society with a huge gap between the land-owning rich and the land-working poor.

Mercantilism/Guilds: Power shifts from landowners to those who control trade and craft. Merchant guilds and craft unions dominate the economy of cities. They set prices, control quality, and protect their members’ interests. This creates a powerful new middle class of master artisans and wealthy merchants who can challenge the authority of the old nobility. Society becomes a struggle between the landed aristocracy and the urban “nouveau riche.”

Capitalism/Industrialism: The means of production (factories, mines, starships) are privately owned. The goal is profit. This system allows for massive innovation and social mobility, but can also lead to extreme inequality, worker exploitation, and the rise of mega-corporations that wield more power than governments. This is the default for most sci-fi settings, creating worlds of glittering corporate towers and polluted industrial slums.

State-Controlled/Communism: The government owns and controls all major industries and resources, theoretically for the good of all. This can eliminate the gross inequality of capitalism, but often at the cost of personal freedom and economic efficiency. It can lead to vast, impersonal bureaucracies, shortages of consumer goods, and a society where political connection is more important than skill or hard work.

Production, Labor, and Trade

Once you know what’s valuable, you must consider how it’s made and moved. The price of any good is determined by three things: the cost of inputs (materials), the cost of labor (skill), and the cost of transportation. Your world’s unique rules should drastically affect each of these.

Production and Labor: Who makes the enchanted swords or the starship engines? If anyone with a basic education can do it, these things should be common and cheap. If it requires a rare “Spark” of talent, decades of training, or a lineage of dwarves who have memorized the Secret Songs of Forging, then the craftsmen are powerful and their goods are expensive. This is how you get powerful guilds, secretive orders, and masters who can command kings.

Transportation: In our own history, spices were worth their weight in gold simply because they had to be carried thousands of miles over dangerous routes. The ability to shrink goods, as seen in Harry Potter, or teleport them, as in Dungeons & Dragons, should obliterate transportation costs. A merchant in a high-magic world wouldn’t have a caravan of wagons; they’d have a Bag of Holding. This would mean exotic goods are no longer exotic. Silk from the far continent would be as common as local wool.

Price = Materials + Labor + Transportation

Money, Barter, and the Power of the State

How do people exchange these goods and services? Usually via some sort of currency.

For a Pre-Industrial or Low-Tech World:

Without the technology to mint complex coins or print bills that are difficult to counterfeit, money needs intrinsic value. This is commodity currency. The value is in the material itself.

Examples: Gold, silver, copper coins, salt, coffee beans, etc.

Worldbuilding Implications: This system works well in slow-growth economies. However, it means the wealth of the kingdom is limited by its access to mines. A new discovery of gold could enrich a nation, while a rival cornering the silver market could cripple it.

For an Industrial or High-Tech World:

Once you can prevent easy counterfeiting and the economy is growing rapidly, you can move to fiat currency. This is money (like a dollar bill) that has no intrinsic value but is declared legal tender by a government. Its value comes from trust in that government.

Examples: The U.S. Dollar, the Euro, the Federation Credit.

Worldbuilding Implications: The stability of your currency is now tied to the stability of your government. A powerful, stable empire will have a strong, trusted currency. A failing state or a collection of warring factions will see hyperinflation, where money becomes worthless. A revolution that fails to stabilize the economy is doomed. People might revert to barter or adopt a foreign, more stable currency. Basically stable economics and stable government go hand in hand.

On the frontiers of your world, a distant colony planet or a border town in a fantasy kingdom, these systems break down. Official currency might be scarce or untrusted. Here, barter reigns supreme, or a new, local commodity currency emerges. A character might pay for a starship repair not with credits, but with a rare alien artifact or a data chip containing valuable navigation charts.

Economics of Aftermath

Major events send shockwaves through a world’s economy that can last for generations and these consequences are often counterintuitive.

Your story doesn’t have to end when the Dark Lord is defeated and every great war or plague has an aftermath.

1. Analyze the Demographics: Who died? Was it the strong young men sent to war? Was it the elderly, vulnerable to disease? Was it a specific ethnic or social group?

2. Compare the Loss of Labor vs. Capital: Production comes from labor (people) and capital (tools, machines, buildings, infrastructure).

If Labor is Hit Harder (e.g., a Plague): The Black Death killed a third of Europe but left the farms, tools, and buildings intact. Suddenly, workers were scarce and in high demand. Their wages rose, they gained bargaining power, and the old feudal system of serfdom began to crumble. A plague, ironically, could be the single greatest force for workers’ rights in your world’s history.

If Capital is Hit Harder (e.g., a Bombing Campaign): Imagine a city is evacuated and then bombed to rubble. The people survive, but the factories and workshops are gone. Now, labor is plentiful, but there are no jobs. Wages would plummet, and workers would be desperate, losing power and influence.

This “economics of aftermath” is rife with storytelling potential. The supposed victors of a war might return home to economic ruin. The survivors of a plague may find themselves with unexpected wealth and social mobility. Inequality is often lowest when everyone is poor, but cataclysms and technological shifts create new winners and losers, leading to massive social realignment. The invention of the printing press destabilized the Church’s monopoly on information and helped fuel the Protestant Reformation. Also helped with literacy, yes. Imagine, what will the invention of the “truth-seeing stone” do to the political structure of your kingdom?

Conclusion

Ideally, your world’s economy should have depth, logic, and a sense of dynamic reality. If your characters’ struggles are be grounded in something tangible, then the world feels more believable. If a kingdom collapses, engage with the economic refugees and let them tell their stories. If a guild tries to monopolize a resource or tech, follow its progress. And whatever else you, make sure you’re having fun counting the coins!

Imagine this.

A smoke-filled chamber where deals are cut with handshakes and threats. A royal court where a whispered rumor is deadlier than a poisoned chalice. A sprawling city square where a demagogue’s speech sways the hearts of millions. A cold, silent bridge of a starship, where a captain learns the homeworld that sent them on a century-long voyage no longer exists.

These dramatic scenes are products of politics.

Politics is the essential, and realistically unavoidable framework that dictates how power is distributed and wielded in any society. It is the engine that drives history, fuels conflict, and forges the destinies of nations and individuals alike. For a worldbuilder, understanding politics is both about creating dry charts of government types and building a living, breathing world full of tension, intrigue, and endless mind games.

The Three Currencies of Power

At its heart, politics is a game of power - the ability to make others act as you wish. This power isn’t some vague, mystical force, no it flows through tangible channels. To build a compelling political landscape, you must understand and distribute the three primary forms of power: Money, Weapons, and Words.

1. Money

This is the most straightforward form of power. With enough wealth, gold coins, galactic credits, or herds of prize cattle, one can buy influence. Bribe a senator to kill a rival’s bill. Fund a proxy candidate to act as your puppet. Pay influential nobles or media figures to spread your message. Money also buys manpower: loyal assistants to manage your affairs, spies to gather intelligence, and, if necessary, mercenaries and assassins to solve problems that diplomacy cannot.

However, remember that currency itself is power. The institution that mints the coins or controls the central bank can manipulate the entire economy, creating booms or busts to enrich allies and ruin enemies. A faction that monopolizes a resource backing the currency, the Spice in Dune for example, effectively holds the entire system hostage.

2. Weapons

Where money rewards compliance, weapons punish defiance. This is the power of the “pointed stick.” The threat of violence is often enough, but only if it’s either credible or perceived as such. A government, rebel faction, or crime lord must be seen as both capable and willing to use force for its threats to have weight. An army provides insurance for a ruler, deterring assassins and coups. It is also the ultimate tool of foreign policy, allowing a nation to conquer new territory, seize resources, or bend weaker states to its will through intimidation.

However, an armed force is a double-edged sword. Soldiers must be paid, fed, and housed. Low morale can turn their spears against you. A brilliant general might win you a war but prove utterly incompetent at governing in peacetime. An over-militarized state can drain the economy and oppress the very people it’s meant to protect, sowing the seeds of its own destruction.

3. Words

The most subtle and often most potent form of power. A skilled orator can turn a crowd into a mob or an army. A charismatic leader can inspire fierce loyalty, convincing the public that their interests are aligned. In a republic, this is the key to winning elections. In a monarchy, it’s the key to preventing a popular uprising.

Words also forge the bonds that create powerful factions. Promises, treaties, and political marriages bind individuals and groups together, allowing them to pool their Money and Weapons into a force greater than the sum of its parts. Information, a special kind of Word, is a currency all its own. Discovering a rival’s dark secret gives you the power of blackmail. Trading intelligence can be as valuable as trading gold.

The Reformation Alliance

These three powers are rarely separate. For example, look to the forces that shattered the religious unity of Europe during the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther (Words): A lone monk and theologian with no army and no personal fortune. His power was purely ideological. His Ninety-five Theses and subsequent writings were a revolutionary message that spread like wildfire thanks to the new technology of the printing press. He offered a spiritual and intellectual justification for breaking with the old order.

The German Princes (Weapons): Figures like Frederick the Wise of Saxony had the political authority and the military might. Luther’s words would have been silenced and he would have been burned as a heretic (as others before him were) without the protection of these princes and their swords. They sheltered him, defended his cause, and used their armies to secure their newly-won religious independence from the Holy Roman Emperor.

The Lure of Church Lands (Money): The Catholic Church was the largest landowner in Europe, possessing immense wealth and drawing huge revenues from Germany. For the princes and city-states, breaking with Rome was not just a matter of faith; it was a colossal economic opportunity. It allowed them to seize the Church’s vast lands, stop sending tithes to Rome, and control their own local finances. This promise of wealth was the fuel for the entire revolutionary engine.

Separately, these forces were contained. Luther would have been a martyr, the princes would have remained disgruntled but obedient vassals, and the desire for wealth would have been a latent grievance. But together, they were a world-changing force. Luther’s words gave the princes a righteous cause. The princes’ weapons gave Luther a shield. And the Church’s money gave them both an irresistible incentive.

This story is also a cautionary tale. This alliance was powerful against their common enemy i.e. the Papacy and the Emperor. But when the common people, inspired by Luther’s words about spiritual freedom, rose up in the Peasants’ War to demand social freedom, the alliance fractured. Luther, horrified by the chaos, sided with the princes. He used his powerful “Words” to condemn the peasants, giving the princes the moral justification to brutally crush the rebellion with their “Weapons” to protect their “Money” and property. The interests of the allies had diverged, with devastating consequences.

The Architecture of the State

Power needs a structure to flow through. This is the government. To make your government feel real, you must ask three critical questions:

Sovereignty: Who has the ultimate right to rule? Sovereignty is the principle of supreme authority. In an absolute monarchy, the king or queen is sovereign, their right to rule granted by divine will, not the people. In a parliamentary system, the legislative body itself might be considered sovereign, with the ultimate power to make and unmake any law. When creating your governments, decide where sovereignty lies. Is it with a single person? A council of mages? The people? The answer determines the fundamental nature of your state and is a fantastic source of conflict. For example, a conflict between a “sovereign” monarch and a “sovereign” parliament is a classic recipe for civil war.

Authority: How far does their power Authority is the practical ability to enforce decisions. A government might claim a vast territory on a map, but can it actually collect taxes in the remote mountain valleys? Can it enforce its laws in a sprawling city slum run by a powerful gang? In a war, a government might lose authority over areas it technically controls because all its resources are at the front. Technology is a key factor here. In a fantasy world, a lack of good roads might mean a king has almost no real authority beyond a few days’ ride from the capital. This creates pockets of lawlessness, autonomy, and rebellion i.e. fertile ground for adventure.

Governance: How does the state choose to act? Governance is the process of ruling, with logic and intent behind the actions. A law doesn’t enforce itself. Imagine a kingdom bans a certain school of magic. The government must first publicize the new law (a challenge in a world without mass media), then deploy agents to shut down schools and confiscate forbidden texts, and then indefinitely police the realm to stop secret practice. It will never be 100% successful. What does it choose to prioritize? Does it crack down on urban mages but ignore rural hedge-wizards? Does it only enforce the law against political enemies? By showing us this the writer reveals a government’s true priorities, its inefficiencies, and its character.

The Shadow Government

Not all power resides in the throne room or the senate hall. In any society, unofficial groups accumulate enough Money, Weapons, or Words to wield significant influence, operating in the shadows of the state. A truly deep political landscape includes these hidden players.

The Untouchable Corporation: A large guild may not have a vote in the senate, but if it is the largest employer in the kingdom, it can threaten to close its factories and cause mass unemployment, effectively blackmailing the government into passing favorable laws. In a sci-fi world, a corporation that controls the means of interstellar travel or terraforming technology might be more powerful than any single government.

The Powerful Faith: A religious institution might have no official political role, but its leader’s words can sway millions of devout followers. If the High Priest condemns a new law from the pulpit, it can trigger mass protests and civil disobedience that the state is powerless to stop without angering the faithful and risking a holy war.

The Criminal Underworld: A sprawling thieves’ guild or crime syndicate is a government in miniature. It taxes its own territory (protection rackets), enforces its own laws (the “code”), and fields its own army. It may not be able to overthrow the state, yet, but it can make entire districts of a city ungovernable, control black markets, and provide illicit services that the official government cannot or will not.

The Secret Society: A cabal of nobles, a mystical order, or an ancient secret society might have no public face at all. Their power lies in their hidden influence—placing their members in key government positions, manipulating events from behind the scenes, and pursuing an agenda that may be centuries old. They are the puppet masters whose strings are invisible to all but a few.

These shadow governments create a rich tapestry of competing interests. A king may have to negotiate with the head of the merchants’ guild as carefully as he does with a foreign ambassador. A story about uncovering a secret society’s influence can be just as compelling as one about a military coup.

Succession

Few moments are more fraught with tension than the transfer of power. A stable, predictable succession allows a nation to thrive. A contested, chaotic succession can tear it apart.

In a hereditary monarchy, the path is supposedly clear. But what happens when a king has no male heir, like England’s Henry VIII, and rips a country’s religion apart to solve his personal problem? What happens when the rightful heir is weak, cruel, or a child, inviting ambitious relatives to make a power play?

In an elective system, like the Holy Roman Empire, a group of electors chooses the next ruler. In theory, this allows for the best candidate to rise. In reality, it can lead to rampant bribery and political maneuvering, or, as with the Habsburgs, one family can dominate the “election” for centuries, creating a de facto dynasty. Modern republics have term limits, but clever leaders can find ways to retain power, like the “tandemocracy” of Putin and Medvedev in Russia, where they effectively traded the roles of president and prime minister to remain in control.

Each transfer of power is a story. An assassination, a scandalous revelation, a sudden death - any of these can shatter the most stable system and plunge your world into a thrilling power vacuum.

Making Government Realistic

Perfectly efficient, corruption-free governments are boring and unbelievable. The soul of a realistic government lies in its flaws.

Bureaucracy and Red Tape: As societies grow more complex, so do their governments. Create agencies that make sense for your world: a Ministry of Magical Affairs, a Department of Dragon Control, a Royal Academy of Chronomancy. Then, make them inefficient. Clog their processes with redundant paperwork, inter-departmental rivalries, and maddening regulations. This “red tape” is both the flavor and a source of conflict for your characters who must navigate the labyrinthine system.

Grand Projects and Waste: Governments love to show off. A king builds a colossal statue of himself while his people starve. A republic spends a fortune on a lavish new senate hall instead of fixing the city’s sewers. These “white elephant” projects are fantastic visual elements for your world that also reveal the government’s vanity and misplaced priorities, creating resentment among the populace.

Corruption: The desire for more, be it wealth or power, is a near-universal constant. Corruption is the natural result. It can be petty, like a city guard demanding a small bribe to look the other way. Or it can be institutional, where an entire system, from corporate kickbacks to judicial favors, runs on graft. How would an honor-bound race of warrior elves react to the concept of bribery? How would a hive-mind species handle individual corruption?

How Technology Shapes the State

The size and shape of a nation are fundamentally limited by its ability to communicate and move resources. This is the crucial link between technology and politics.

In a pre-modern setting, information travels at the speed of a horse or a ship. This makes it nearly impossible to govern a vast, continental empire effectively. Power is decentralized by necessity. Local lords, governors, and cultural groups enjoy significant autonomy, creating a patchwork of distinct regions.

The digital age broke this link for information, but not for people or goods. An idea can cross the globe in a second, but it still takes hours to fly a person and weeks to ship cargo. This creates its own unique political dynamics.

Now, project this into the future. A colony on Mars is a 40-minute light-delay away. Real-time conversation is impossible. A relief ship takes months to arrive. This technological reality naturally breeds independence. The ease of communication allows the colony to receive information and culture, but the immense difficulty of transport forces it toward self-sufficiency and self-governance. The seeds of a new, sovereign Martian nation are planted by physics itself. If your setting has faster-than-light (FTL) travel, the political landscape will be entirely different. Distances that once created empires and tore them apart become trivial. Entire planets can specialize their economies, becoming the breadbasket or shipyard of the galaxy, creating a new, unprecedented level of interstellar interdependence and new, galaxy-spanning vulnerabilities.

Conclusion

You could say that politics is the connective tissue of your world. It determines who has power, how they use it, and what happens when it changes hands. By weaving these threads of power, structure, succession, and technology together, you move beyond a simple description of a government and begin to build a dynamic and highly volatile world. In the beginning, there was the story. Then came the question: Why?

Religion is humanity’s attempt to answer that question. It is the framework through which a culture interprets the universe, the code that defines its morality, and the institution that organizes its soul. It is more than just a pantheon of gods; it is the source of a people’s greatest hopes, their deepest fears, their unity, and their most violent conflicts.

While your cosmology sets the stage, religion writes the script for the actors upon it. It translates the abstract mysteries of creation into the tangible rules of daily life. A well-designed religion will feel like the central nervous system of your society, sending signals that dictate everything from who can rule to what one can eat.

The Nature of the Divine

Faith requires an object for it. The nature of a culture’s gods, spirits, or sacred principles is a direct reflection of their environment and values.

Monotheism (The One God): A single, all-powerful deity reigns supreme. This fosters a sense of unity and universal moral law. But it can also lead to intolerance. If there is only one true god, all other beliefs are, by definition, false. The character of this one god is paramount: is it a benevolent shepherd, a wrathful judge, or an unknowable cosmic force?

Polytheism (The Pantheon): A family of gods, each with their own domain: war, love, the sea, the harvest. This creates a more flexible and often more relatable system. A soldier prays to the War God, a farmer to the Harvest God. This can also lead to political conflict, as the priests and followers of different gods vie for influence.

Animism/Shamanism (The Ten Thousand Spirits): There is no central pantheon. Instead, divinity is everywhere - in the river, the ancient tree, the clever fox. The world is alive with spirits. This is common in cultures deeply connected to the natural world. Power lies with the Shaman, the one who can see and speak to these spirits.

Dualism (The Eternal War): The universe is a battleground between two opposing forces: light and dark, order and chaos, creation and destruction. This is a fantastic engine for conflict. Every moral choice, from a king’s decree to a peasant’s lie, can be framed as aiding one side or the other in this cosmic struggle.

Ancestor Worship (The Honored Dead): The most powerful spiritual forces are the spirits of one’s own ancestors. This places family, lineage, and tradition at the absolute center of society. To dishonor your family is the greatest sin, and the counsel of the dead is sought for every major decision.

Abstract Faith (The Idea as God): In some societies, particularly in sci-fi or more philosophical settings, people may worship abstract concepts. They might venerate Logic, pray to the spirit of the Nation, or follow a life-philosophy so devoutly that it becomes a religion in itself, like the Jedi Code.

The Divine Word

What does the religion actually teach? This is the dogma or a set of core beliefs, moral codes, and sacred stories that define the faith.

The Sacred Texts: How is this knowledge preserved and transmitted? Is there a single, holy book (a Bible, a Qu’ran)? Is it a collection of epic poems and sagas passed down orally? Or is the “word of god” revealed directly through the visions of a living prophet? Control over this text is control over the religion itself.

The Moral Code: The dogma is the source of morality. What is a virtue? What is a sin? For a warrior culture, dying in battle might be a virtue, while dying of old age is a sin. For a monastic culture, the opposite is true. This moral code is the direct blueprint for the society’s legal system. “Thou shalt not steal” is both a religious commandment and a secular law.

The Afterlife Narrative: The religion provides the definitive answer to what happens after death. This narrative is a powerful tool of control. Does the faith promise a paradise for the devout, reincarnation for the balanced, or eternal torment for the wicked? The fear of damnation and the promise of salvation can motivate people to do almost anything.

The Role of the Clergy

A faith needs keepers. The clergy i.e. priests, shamans, monks, or inquisitors - are the human agents of the divine. Their structure and role in society are critical.

Hierarchy: Is the faith centrally organized, with a strict hierarchy from the high pontiff down to the lowly village priest? This creates a powerful, stable, and often wealthy institution that can rival the state itself. Or is it decentralized, with independent temples or wandering mystics, each interpreting the faith in their own way? This leads to a more diverse but also more chaotic religious landscape.

Role in Society: What do priests actually do? Are they healers and scholars, running hospitals and universities? Are they warrior-priests, leading holy crusades? Are they political advisors, whispering in the ears of kings? Or are they reclusive mystics, offering cryptic wisdom from their isolated monasteries?

Purity and Power: How are priests chosen? Is it a calling, a birthright, or a position that can be bought? Are they required to be celibate, to take vows of poverty, or to perform ritual purification? The rules that govern the clergy define them as separate and often elevated from the common populace.

Rituals and Worship

How do the followers practice their faith? Rituals are the tangible, physical expression of belief, making the religion feel real and lived-in.

Worship and Prayer: Is prayer a quiet, personal meditation or a loud, communal song? Is it performed at specific times of day? Is it directed at a single god or a host of spirits?

Sacrifice: What do the faithful offer to their gods? Is it a portion of the harvest, the blood of an animal, or something more abstract, like a personal memory or a vow of service? The nature of the sacrifice reveals what the culture (and its gods) truly values.

Pilgrimage: Is there a sacred site - a holy city, a remote mountaintop, a mysterious ruin - that the faithful are expected to journey to at least once in their lives? This is a built-in adventure hook, creating a reason for characters to travel the world.

Festivals: Religions mark the passage of time with holy days and festivals. These celebrations, be it commemorating the birth of a prophet, the turning of the seasons, or a mythical victory, are opportunities to show your culture at its most vibrant, with unique food, clothing, and public rituals.

The Crucible of Faith

Religions are not static, as much as some people will attempt to convince you. They are living things that fracture, evolve, and collide.

Heresy and Schism: What happens when there is a fundamental disagreement over dogma? A powerful new prophet might challenge the authority of the established church, leading to a schism. A heretic who offers a compelling but forbidden interpretation of the sacred texts could be hunted by inquisitors, their followers forced to worship in secret. The Protestant Reformation is a perfect real-world example of how a dispute over doctrine can reshape continents.

Syncretism: When two cultures with different religions meet peacefully, they often blend. The gods of one faith are adopted as saints in another. The festival of a pagan sun god becomes the holy day for a new monotheistic religion. This creates layered cultures with rich and sometimes contradictory beliefs.

Holy War: This is the ultimate religious conflict, when two faiths with mutually exclusive claims (”My god is the only true god”) go to war. This is a war for the soul of the world itself (although resources are never far away), often fought with a fanaticism and brutality that secular conflicts lack.

Conclusion

By building a rich and detailed religious life for your world, you provide the “why” behind your people’s actions. Their faith will be the foundation of their laws, the justification for their wars, the comfort in their suffering, and the lens through which they see all of creation. A world without fauna is silent and sterile. A world with random fauna is a mere collection of monsters. To build a world that breathes, that feels interconnected, you must look to the most fundamental driver of life and death: dinner. The intricate dance of predator and prey is both a biological curiosity and a powerful worldbuilding tool.

Designing creatures as links in a chain allows you to create a world that feels logical, dynamic, and independent of your hand. This article will guide you through using food chains and webs to forge ecosystems that are believable and rich sources of conflict, culture, and story.

The Energy Pyramid

At its core, an ecosystem is an energy circulation system. On Earth, that energy originates from the sun. In your world, it might be a magical sun, a luminous moon, a planet’s geothermal core, or ley lines of raw power. Whatever your source, this energy is the foundation of your world’s food pyramid.

This pyramid is built on trophic levels, and understanding them is key to a stable ecosystem:

Producers: These are the base of the pyramid. They convert your world’s primary energy source into edible matter. They are your plants, your glowing fungi, your photosynthesizing corals. Because so much energy is lost at each subsequent level, producers must be unfathomably abundant. For every predator, there must be a thousand fields of grass, a million glowing cave-mosses, or an entire forest of Sun-Fruit trees.

Primary Consumers (Herbivores): These are the creatures that eat the producers. They are the most populous of all consumers because they tap directly into the largest energy reserve. Their designs are dictated by their food source. Do they eat the tough bark of Ironwood trees? Give them grinding, powerful teeth and a reinforced snout. Do they feed on nectar from Skydrifter Blooms a mile in the air? They will need wings, gas-sacs for floating, or impossibly long limbs. Remember, the larger your herbivore, the more producers it needs to survive. A herd of colossal Grazing Leviathans would require a continent-sized prairie to support them.

Secondary Consumers (Carnivores/Omnivores): These creatures hunt the primary consumers. Here, the energy pool has shrunk dramatically. Consequently, there are far fewer secondary consumers than herbivores. They must be faster, stronger, or smarter than their prey. A pack of fleet-footed Ridge-Stalkers might hunt by running a lone Glass-Hopper to exhaustion. A solitary, armored Ambush Beetle might use its landscape-matching shell to surprise a burrowing Root-Vole.

Tertiary Consumers (Carnivores/Omnivores): These predators hunt other carnivores. They occupy a precarious position, often being the apex predator of a smaller food chain. Design here can become highly specialized. If your secondary consumers are slow but heavily armored, a tertiary predator might evolve intelligence, using gravity or tools to crack their shells. If the secondary consumers are venomous, this predator might possess a powerful immunity, a trait that makes them a fearsome and specialized hunter.

Apex Predators: The kings of the mountain. These are the creatures at the very top, with no natural predators of their own. It is tempting to design them as nigh-invincible, spike-covered killing machines, but remember the iron law of energy efficiency. Form follows function. An apex predator is a master of its craft, not a jack of all trades. It has little need for excessive defensive features because nothing hunts it. Its traits are honed for hunting and surviving in its environment. A true apex predator is a masterpiece of lethal efficiency, not a showcase of intimidating aesthetics.

Decomposers: The great recyclers. What happens to the bodies? The fallen leaves? The waste? Decomposers - bacteria, fungi, carrion-eaters - break it all down, returning the nutrients to the soil for the producers to use. They are the crucial final link that makes the entire system sustainable. A forest floor crawling with acid-secreting slimes or plains picked clean by swarms of flesh-eating insects makes a world feel complete and visceral.

The Intelligent Exception: Humans are apex predators, yet our population dwarfs that of lions or wolves. Why? We hacked the system. Through agriculture and animal husbandry, we artificially inflated the “producer” and “primary consumer” levels, creating a massive, sustainable energy source for ourselves. Your world’s intelligent species will likely do the same, or else their population will be naturally limited by the energy pyramid. Perhaps they are locked in a constant struggle for resources, or perhaps they have found a magical alternative to farming.

The Keystone Species

Within your ecosystem, some species are more important than others. A keystone species is one whose presence has a disproportionately large effect on its environment relative to its abundance. Its removal can cause the entire ecosystem to collapse. It can also be used as source of story hooks.

For example, A “Grave-Wyrm” that burrows massive tunnels through a mountain range creates a home for itself and a new subterranean ecosystem for fungi, insects, and other creatures. If the Grave-Wyrms were to die out, the tunnels would collapse, and that entire food web would vanish.

Alternatively, an apex predator can be a keystone species by controlling the population of herbivores. In a river valley, if the “River-Cat” population is decimated by a plague, their primary prey, the “Reed-Grazers,” will experience a population boom. The Reed-Grazers will then eat all the riverside reeds, causing the riverbanks to erode, silting up the water and killing off the native fish. Or perhaps, some plants rely on a single species for pollination. The “Sun-Moth” might be the only creature capable of reaching the nectar of the rare “Moon-Lotus,” a plant that is the primary food source for three other species. The extinction of the moth would mean the extinction of the lotus, and in turn, the starvation of everything that depends on it.

The Evolutionary Arms Race

For every adaptation, there is a counter-adaptation, which can be visualised with the following steps.

Step 1: Start with the prey.

Imagine a primary consumer: the Rock-Skitter. This creature, the size of a large tortoise, survives by scraping nutritious, photosynthesizing lichen off the surfaces of sun-drenched crystals. Its primary defense is its thick, rock-like carapace, which provides both exceptional camouflage and physical armor. When motionless, it is nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain.

Step 2: Design its predator.

Now, what hunts something that looks like a rock and has a hard shell? A predator that relies on sight would starve. Enter the Shard-Lurker. This lean, six-legged hunter has evolved specialized pads on its feet that are incredibly sensitive to vibration. It doesn’t need to look for its prey. It just listens for the faint scraping and skittering sounds the Rock-Skitter makes as it feeds. To defeat the armor, the Shard-Lurker has a single, hardened, chisel-like claw on its forelimb, which it uses to pierce the weaker joint-seams in the Skitter’s shell with a swift, powerful strike.

Step 3: Give the prey a countermeasure.

The Rock-Skitter is now vulnerable to a specialized hunter. It evolves. To counter the vibration-sense, its movements become more erratic - short bursts of feeding followed by long periods of perfect stillness. More importantly, it develops a new defense. When it senses the tell-tale tremors of a Lurker, it can rapidly vibrate its own carapace, creating a confusing “sonic camouflage” that floods the area with false signals, making it impossible for the Lurker to pinpoint its exact location.

Step 4: The predator responds.

The Shard-Lurker, its primary hunting method now frustrated, must adapt or die. It evolves a new weapon - a gland in its throat that allows it to project a short, concentrated stream of corrosive acid. Now, it no longer needs to find the precise joint-seam. It can follow the general vibrations, spray an area to melt and soften the Rock-Skitter’s shell, and then easily strike the weakened and exposed creature beneath.

This back-and-forth can be applied to any set of predator-prey relationships. Armor is met with crushing force, which is met with greater agility, which is met with ranged attacks. This “dialogue” ensures your creatures are perfectly suited to each other and their shared environment, making their adaptations feel earned and logical.

Symbiosis, Invasives, and Unlikely Alliances

Mutualism (Win/Win): Two species benefit from their interaction. The “Glow-Shroom” of the deep caves can’t spread its spores on its own. It attracts “Stone-Crawlers” with a sweet nectar. The crawlers get a meal, and in the process, their rocky shells become coated with spores, which they carry to new parts of the cave.

Commensalism (Win/Neutral): One species benefits while the other is unaffected. The “Sky-Ray,” a massive floating creature, has a thick, leathery hide that is impervious to the acid rain in the upper atmosphere. Smaller, hard-shelled “Hitcher-Crabs” cling to its underbelly, gaining a safe ride through the sky without affecting the Sky-Ray.

Parasitism (Win/Lose): One organism benefits at the expense of its host. The “Memory-Leech” is a small, aquatic parasite that attaches to its host and doesn’t feed on blood, but on memories. The host becomes forgetful, confused, and eventually loses their sense of self, while the leech becomes a living vessel of stolen knowledge. Body horror begins here.

The Invasive Species: What happens when you introduce a creature that didn’t evolve in this arms race? You get an invasive species - a conflict within the ecosystem. Imagine a resilient, fast-breeding amphibian from another continent is introduced to a swamp. The native predators don’t recognize it as food, and the native prey have no defense against its unique toxins. It can devour the base of the food chain, starving out the native species and collapsing the entire ecosystem. For your world’s inhabitants, this is an ecological disaster, a direct threat, a mystery to solve, and a monster to be vanquished.

The Human Element: An ecosystem is also a cultural resource. Your intelligent species will interact with the local fauna in ways that go far beyond simple hunting, weaving these creatures into their economy, their mythology, and their very identity.

Domestication and Husbandry: Which creatures have been tamed? A plains culture might have domesticated a fast, six-legged mount, revolutionizing their ability to travel and hunt. A mountain society might raise a species of giant, woolly lizard for its meat and its fire-resistant hide. The choice of what to domesticate defines a culture’s technology and lifestyle.

Harvesting the Beast: People use animals for food and parts. Perhaps the venom of the “Spine-Snake” is the only source for a powerful antidote, making snake-charming a respected and dangerous profession. The glowing glands of the “Lantern-Beetle” might be used to light city streets. The incredibly strong silk of the “Crystal-Spider” could be woven into armor for kings. The economy of a region can be built on the back of a single, valuable creature.

Creatures as Symbols and Gods: Animals are also powerful symbols. A culture that lives in fear of the mighty “Cave-Bear” might begin to worship it, seeing its strength and ferocity as divine attributes. A kingdom might adopt the “Sun-Hawk” as its national emblem, its soaring flight representing the kingdom’s noble aspirations. A family crest might feature the “Shell-Boar” to signify their stubbornness and resilience.

Monsters and Folklore: What creatures are the “monsters” in your world’s fairy tales? The “Swamp-Hag,” a creature that mimics the cries of a lost child to lure in prey is the reason children are told not to go into the swamp after dark. These stories are ecological warnings disguised as folklore.

Before the first king was crowned, before the first spell was cast, before the first starship broke orbit, there was the land. Geography is the canvas on which we paint our cultures, the bedrock on which we build our empires, and the unseen force that dictates the flow of history. A map is a story of cause and effect, of hardship and opportunity, not just names and border lines.

You could simply place a culture in an environment and call it a day. But a truly immersive world is born when the culture is of the environment. A people carved from the mountains will think and act differently than a people raised on the endless plains. To build a world that feels real, we must learn to listen to the stories the land itself is telling us. We can begin by breaking down this immense topic into three interconnected pillars: the lay of the land, the breath of the world, and the bounty of the earth or, more simply, landscape, climate, and resources.

The Lay of the Land

The physical shape of your world - its mountains, valleys, plains, and coasts - is the primary determinant of how and where your people will live. It dictates population density, the nature of settlement, and the very psychology of a culture.

The Sprawling Plains: A vast, open plain presents both immense opportunity and immense vulnerability. If the plains are fertile, with great rivers snaking through them like arteries of life, you have the recipe for a grand, centralized empire. The land can support a massive population through widespread agriculture, and the rivers act as natural highways for trade, communication, and military deployment. Cities can sprawl, and power can be projected over vast distances. But if those plains are arid and dry, they foster a different kind of people. With farming impossible, they become nomads, their culture built around the migratory herds they follow. Their home is the entire expanse of the plains; their wealth is not in land, its livestock. They are masters of the horse and the open sky, their society mobile, resilient, and independent.

The Mountain Fortress: In stark contrast, mountainous terrain forces life into concentrated pockets. Populations huddle in defensible valleys, their settlements growing vertically rather than horizontally. The jagged peaks and treacherous passes create natural borders, fostering cultures that are often isolated, insular, and protective of their ancestral home. Agriculture is a constant challenge, forcing innovation like the terraced farms of Japan and the Andes. A mountain people might be seen as stubborn, hardy, and clan-oriented, their society built on close-knit communities and a deep respect for the unforgiving nature that surrounds them. The mountains are their fortress, their provider, and their identity.

The Island Kingdom: For a people living on an archipelago, the sea is everything. It is their primary source of food, their main highway for trade, and their greatest defense. With arable land severely limited, they are driven to become master sailors, fishermen, and merchants out of sheer necessity. The sea isolates them from continental powers, allowing a unique culture to develop, yet it also connects them to the entire world. Their perspective is perpetually outward-facing, their eyes always on the horizon. An island nation’s strength is not in its armies, but in its fleet.

The Great Forest or Jungle: A dense, sprawling forest is a world unto itself. It is a vertical landscape, where life exists in the canopy as much as on the ground. Movement is difficult, sightlines are short, and the environment itself is a labyrinth. Such a place might foster smaller, decentralized tribes who live in harmony with the woods, or it might hide great cities built into the colossal trees. The forest is both a provider of immense resources (wood, unique flora and fauna) and a formidable defense, swallowing invading armies whole. Its people might be secretive, highly skilled trackers, and deeply connected to the natural cycles of their home.

The Breath of the World

Climate is the daily reality your people must endure or enjoy. It directly shapes their appearance, their homes, and their way of life.

Clothing and Architecture: The most obvious influence of climate is on what people wear and what they build. In a frigid, arctic world, clothing is a matter of life and death. Thick furs, multiple layers, and insulated hides are essential. If traditional fur-bearing animals aren’t available, a culture might creatively turn to the thick, blubber-lined hides of seals or other marine mammals. Their architecture will reflect this need for warmth: few or no windows, a central hearth for heating, and steeply peaked roofs designed to shed heavy snow.

Conversely, a culture in a hot, sun-scorched desert will adopt different strategies. One might assume they’d wear as little as possible, but in a place with unrelenting sun, the opposite is true. Like the Bedouins, they would wear loose, light-colored, full-body coverings - not for warmth, but for protection from the sun’s rays, allowing for crucial airflow across the skin. Their architecture would feature open courtyards, high ceilings to let heat rise, and flat roofs that could be used for sleeping on cooler nights. The lack of plentiful wood in a desert means buildings would be made of stone, mud-brick, or clay.

The Rain Shadow Effect: The interplay between landscape and climate creates diversity. A tall mountain range near a coast will block the passage of rain clouds. On the windward side, facing the sea, the land will be drenched in rain, fostering a lush, vibrant rainforest or jungle. On the leeward side, however, the land is starved of moisture, creating an arid desert or dry scrubland. This single geographical feature can create two vastly different biomes, and therefore two vastly different cultures, living within a few dozen miles of each other. The jungle-dwellers might be a society of hunters and gatherers living in homes of wood and leaf, while the desert people are hardy pastoralists living in stone fortresses. This proximity of opposites is a natural generator for conflict, trade, and story.

The Landscape Shapes the War

War is not fought on a featureless grid. The land itself can be a general, dictating tactics, shaping armies, and deciding the fate of empires. The geography of a region influences how its people learn to fight.

The Plains: Open plains are the domain of cavalry and grand, sweeping formations of infantry. The culture that masters the horse (or its equivalent) will dominate. Warfare here is about speed, logistics, and decisive, large-scale battles. A plains culture values shock tactics and overwhelming force.

The Mountains: A mountain pass is a natural chokepoint, where a small, determined force can hold off a much larger army. Think of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. Mountain warfare is about defense, ambushes, and guerrilla tactics. Armies here are composed of light, agile infantry, not heavy cavalry. A mountain people value endurance, knowledge of the terrain, and cunning over brute strength.

The Forest: Fighting in a dense forest or jungle neutralizes the advantages of cavalry and large formations. It is the realm of the skirmisher, the archer, and the trapper. Visibility is low, and the environment itself is a weapon. The Roman legions, masters of open-field battle, were famously annihilated in the Teutoburg Forest. A forest people value stealth, patience, and using the environment to their advantage.

The Sea: For island or coastal nations, the war is won or lost on the water. Their military is their navy. They fight not with infantry formations, but with fleets of ships, mastering the arts of ramming, boarding, and naval gunnery. Their strategic thinking is defined by blockades, amphibious assaults, and controlling vital sea lanes.

The Bounty of the Earth

What the land provides - and what it denies - is the engine of economics, trade, and warfare. The availability of stone, wood, metal, and food defines a culture’s technology, wealth, and its relationship with its neighbors.

The Foundation of Society: A people living in a dense forest will build a world of wood. Their homes, tools, and fortresses will be timber. A culture born in a rocky, mountainous region will become master stonemasons, their cities carved from the rock itself. These basic materials define the aesthetic and feel of a civilization. But what happens when the forest-dwellers need iron for stronger plows and swords? And what if the only source of iron ore is deep within the mountains of the stone-masons?

Conflict and Commerce: This scarcity is the spark that ignites story. The timber-folk and the mountain-folk now have a reason to interact. Perhaps they form a symbiotic trade relationship: caravans of timber travel up the mountain passes and return laden with iron ore. Their two cultures become intertwined, reliant on each other for survival and prosperity. Or, perhaps the timber empire, with its vast population supported by wooden-plowed fields, decides it is easier to take the iron it needs. They launch an invasion into the mountains, and a war begins - a war rooted in the fundamental geographic reality of their resource distribution.

The Psychology of Place

The landscape doesn’t just shape a people’s bodies and buildings; it shapes their minds and souls. The world they see every day becomes the language of their myths, the foundation of their personality, and the source of their deepest fears and highest aspirations.

A Culture of the Plains lives under an endless sky. The horizon is their constant companion. This might make them feel small and exposed, leading to a fatalistic religion centered on powerful, capricious sky-gods. Or, it might instill in them a sense of limitless possibility and manifest destiny, a belief that it is their right to expand and fill the vast emptiness.

A Culture of the Mountains is surrounded by ancient, immovable giants of stone. They live in a vertical world of peaks and valleys. This could foster a sense of stubbornness and resilience, a belief that anything worth having must be earned through hard struggle. Their gods might be seen as chthonic earth spirits living deep within the mountains, and their concept of the afterlife might be a final, peaceful valley or a hellish, inescapable chasm.

A Culture of the Jungle lives in a world of constant, overwhelming life and swift decay. Everything is green, vibrant, and dangerous. They might develop a cyclical worldview, where life and death are not opposites but two parts of the same relentless process. Their myths would be full of trickster spirits, camouflaged predators, and the idea that nothing is ever truly what it seems.

Conclusion

When you look at your map, there is more than just mountains and rivers. See the gods that live there. See the metaphors a mother will use to teach her child. See the landscape as the first and most powerful storyteller your people will ever know.

In the end, geography is a web of interconnected causes and effects. A mountain range (landscape) creates a cold, snowy climate and holds rich veins of iron (resources). This gives rise to a hardy people of miners and smiths who live in stone halls, wear thick furs, and trade their metal for the grain they cannot grow in their rocky soil. Each detail logically follows from the last.

When you build your world, interrogate it. Ask why the mountains are there, why the desert is to their east, and why a great forest lies to their west. From those answers, the stories of the people who live there will emerge and they shall be compelling as hell.

In modern fantasy, pantheons often fall into a predictable and deeply anachronistic trap: they are written as celestial life coaches. We design gods of love who act like supportive therapists, gods of wisdom who function as friendly mentors, and gods of war who serve as demanding but ultimately caring coaches. Sometimes we subconsciously project the modern, therapeutic ideals of unconditional love and personal emotional fulfillment onto our polytheistic deities.

But if we look to the authentic mythologies of the ancient world - and the most compelling lore of modern gaming, such as the Daedric Princes of The Elder Scrolls - we find a very different reality. The gods of old were not your friends. They were, probably, not your parents. They were terrifying, alien intelligences bound up with power, fate, and cosmic hierarchy. They did not exist to validate a mortal’s emotional journey; they existed as fundamental forces of nature. But does this mean they are entirely devoid of sentiment? Are there cases where gods feel love, grief, or fierce affection for mortals?

Absolutely. Mythology is rife with gods who fall in love, mourn their children, and show blatant favoritism. However, worldbuilders often make the mistake of scaling this affection down to human, healthy proportions.

In a realistic pantheon, a god’s sentimentality is not safe. It is possessive, overwhelming, and utterly lacking in human boundaries. A god does not love you the way a partner loves you; a god loves you the way a child loves a fragile butterfly - often crushing it in their eagerness to hold it.

To begin, let us return to the root of ancient worship: reverence, bargain, and terror.

Gods as Forces of Nature

The ancient world approached divinity the way a sailor approaches a raging sea, or the way a doctor approaches a plague-stricken village - with fear, deep respect, and the acute knowledge that the powers above them were not arranged for their personal comfort.

When you design a god ask yourself, “How does this god threaten or use my protagonist, and what must my protagonist do to survive their attention?” Rarely do Gods descend into the narrative out of a sentimental love for the weak. If they notice a mortal, it is because that mortal is useful, amusing, or in the way.

The Greek goddess Aphrodite (Venus) is the prime example. Her favor was intoxicating, but her jealousy was lethal. If a god loves you, they own you. If you credit your own hard work for your success, or worse, if you fall in love with another mortal, the god’s sentiment turns instantly to violent betrayal.

When building your pantheon, resist the urge to fill slots on a D&D alignment chart. Instead, think of them as raw elements of existence given a face.

Now let us look at eleven archetypes of divinity, contrasting their sanitized modern versions with their true, terrifying potential.

The Primordial God

Almost every mythology features at least one primordial god - an unknowable power that created the world, predating the more human-like deities of the pantheon. They act as the literal aspects of vast concepts, such as time, chaos, the starry void, or the universe itself (think of the Greek Khaos, the Mesopotamian Tiamat, or the Norse Ymir).

They are not wise, grandfatherly creators - a “Watchmaker” or a cosmic Morgan Freeman - who oversee the world with a fond, protective smile, waiting to dispense ultimate wisdom to the protagonist in the final act.

Primordial gods rarely possess human emotions, and their motives are utterly incomprehensible to mortals. They are not people; they are geologic and cosmic forces. They are the abyss, the shifting tectonic plates, the endless, suffocating vacuum of space. You do not pray to the abyss for self-actualization; you simply acknowledge its overwhelming, crushing existence.

How does a culture interact with a god that doesn’t care if they exist?

Often, they don’t pray to the Primordial God; they pray to the lesser, younger gods to keep the Primordial one asleep. Cults that actively worship these entities are usually apocalyptic or nihilistic, seeking to return the ordered world to the beautiful, formless void from which it sprang. If a Primordial God “wakes up” in your story, it is probably a natural disaster, not so much a divine intervention.

The Transactional God

The trickster god is often reduced to comic relief - a chaotic but harmless prankster, or a friendly guide who encourages mortals to “step outside their comfort zone” and read new books.

Think of the Greek Hermes or the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile. This is a god of commerce, luck, boundaries, and transactions. He is a cosmic hustler and not your whimsical friend. He does not deal with mortals out of love; he deals with them because they amuse him, and because human desperation is entertaining.

A Transactional God is capricious, sharp, and entirely full of deceit. They engage mortals directly, proposing deals that are almost never fair, in the modern-contractual sense. Their interactions are a cosmic joke where the mortal is always the punchline. When a mortal approaches this god, they are gambling with their soul. They are hoping to win a fraction of power from an entity that views human suffering as a form of theatrical entertainment.

A society worshipping this god might view contracts as sacred holy writ. Breaking a trade agreement is both a crime and blasphemy. Their temples might also double as banks or courthouses.

The God of Light

Gods of light, sun, and purity are frequently written as the ultimate “good guys.” They are warm, loving, and unconditionally protective, shedding a gentle, healing glow over their followers.

Consider the Greek Apollo or the Daedric Prince Meridia. Light in the ancient imagination is a blinding, searing, and purifying force. A true God of Light is not a motherly figure dispensing celestial hugs. They are alien, cold, and severe.

This archetype demands absolute obedience and purity. Their “love” for humanity is conditional and commanding, nothing personal. They do not descend to console a mortal; they summon a mortal to be a weapon in their cosmic war against defilement. When this god speaks, it is not a gentle whisper, but a booming command. They heal, but they also incinerate. They illuminate, but they also expose every flaw. A mortal that worships the God of Light is seeking to align themselves with an uncompromising, terrifying righteousness.

A society centered around this uncompromising god likely features strict inquisitions, harsh justice systems, and perhaps architecture designed to funnel blinding sunlight onto altars or criminals.

The God of Passion and Madness

The god of love or revelry is heavily sanitized today. The god of wine is often depicted as the absolute “party god” - a mystical frat boy who encourages mortals to let their hair down and have a good time. Similarly, the goddess of love is reduced to a celestial matchmaker, a cosmic couples-counselor, or an advocate for romantic “self-care.”

The most notable manifestations of such archetype are the Greek Dionysus, the Daedric Prince Sheogorath, or the terrifying, kingdom-burning power of Aphrodite. To the ancients, love, lust, and intoxication were not safe, therapeutic experiences; they were forms of temporary insanity. This deity represents the total collapse of neat social order and the terrifying realization that human logic is a fragile illusion. They represent ecstatic rupture, the dissolution of the ego, and the terror of the irrational.

When a mortal is struck by this god - whether through the frenzy of wine or the obsession of lust - they lose their free will. They are compelled to betray their vows, ruin their reputations, and tear their own lives apart for a feeling they cannot control.

This god is the incomprehension of the cosmos personified. They remind mortals that there are forces in the universe so far beyond human understanding that brushing up against them feels like madness. A God of Passion and Madness tears down the little fences that mortals build inside their minds to feel safe. When a culture worships this archetype, it is a fearful acknowledgment that civilization and logic are just a thin veneer over a chaotic, primal reality.

The God of the Nature

The God of Nature is often reduced to a gentle, weeping environmentalist - a celestial park ranger or a Disney-fied forest spirit who exists to scold humans for cutting down trees and to promote peaceful coexistence with animals.

Consider the Greek Artemis, the Egyptian Sobek, or the Daedric Prince Hircine. To the ancients, nature was a slaughterhouse. A true God of Nature embodies the terrifying reality of the food chain. They are “red in tooth and claw.”

This god does not so much concern itself with harmony, but rather with the primal forces of predation, survival, and the hunt. They view humans simply as another type of meat in the forest. When a mortal prays to the Relentless Wild, they are asking for something specific - the strength to be the predator rather than the prey. Their rites are bloody, their demands are primal, and their followers view civilization as a cage.

The God of the Dead

The god of the dead is quite often depicted as the main villain, plotting to murder the living, plunge the world into eternal darkness, and steal souls for an evil army.
Look to the Greek Hades, the Egyptian Anubis, or the Mesopotamian Ereshkigal. Death, in the ancient mindset, was not “evil.” It was simply the ultimate, inescapable bureaucracy.

The God of the Underworld is often the most stable, impartial, and reliable deity in the pantheon. They do not need to scheme to destroy the living, because they know with absolute certainty that every living thing will eventually come to them anyway. Furthermore, because they rule everything beneath the soil, they are also the god of wealth (gemstones, gold, and fertile soil). A mortal worships the “Divine Administrator” out of solemn respect for the natural order, seeking to ensure their paperwork is in order when their inevitable time comes.

In terms of worldbuilding they shapes a society’s entire funeral industry. Burial rites are about honoring the dead, but also they are meticulous, desperate preparations for a cosmic audit. Coins must be placed on eyes, spells must be perfectly woven into burial shrouds, and sins must be ritually cleansed. The tragedy of the unburied or “un-tolled” soul - who is denied passage and becomes a wandering wraith - is a source of horror and motivation for the living characters.

The God of Creation and Knowledge

The god of the forge or wisdom is often the jolly, soot-stained craftsman who happily hands the protagonist the magical sword they need to slay the Dark Lord, acting as a divine quartermaster.
Think of Hephaestus, the Egyptian Thoth, or the Daedric Princes Hermaeus Mora and Jyggalag. This god is detached, hyper-focused, and utterly devoid of human empathy. Creation is an inherently violent act and such gods care deeply for the creation, but care very little for the mortals.

To the Obsessive Architect, mortals are flawed, messy, and painfully temporary. The god of knowledge does not hoard secrets to help humanity; they hoard them because a secret is a perfect, unchanging thing, unlike the mortals who seek them. This deity represents the cold, relentless march of progress, mechanism, and logic. A mortal who catches the eye of this god risks becoming just another tool in their workshop - used until they are broken in the pursuit of a flawless, eternal design.

A society that worships the Creator and the Forge is driven by the cold, relentless march of progress, mechanism, and logic. They value utility over empathy. They may pursue scientific, magical, and industrial advancement without moral constraints. If a new mining technique poisons a river, or a new spell requires unethical experimentation, the priests of the Forge will bless it as “necessary progress.”

But what happens to a flawed tool? It is discarded.

God of Fate

Many religions feature a triple deity, metaphorically standing in for the stages of life (Mother, Maiden, Crone) and acting as the weavers, rulers, or foretellers of fate.

Despite the stereotype, this is not simply a wise, quirky grandmother figures who bakes cookies of destiny, speaks in convenient riddles, and gives the hero the exact clue they need to defeat the villain and find their true love.

Fate is cold and uncompromising. Entities like the Moirai (Fates) of Greece or the Norns of Norse myth spin, measure, and cut the threads of life with indifference. They do not weave a destiny so the mortal can find a “happy ending”; they weave because the cycle of the universe demands it. If a hero’s thread is meant to end before the quest is finished, the shears will snap shut, and no amount of mortal weeping, bargaining, or heroism will stop the blades.

Oracles speak in horrifying, unavoidable truths. A culture that worships the Fates will be deeply fatalistic, viewing struggle against destiny as the ultimate hubris. When your characters encounter these gods, they should leave feeling stripped of their autonomy, realizing they are merely threads in a loom they cannot comprehend.

The God of the Boundary

These gods personify the crossing over of boundaries, or the passing of eternal cycles like the turning of the seasons, the transition from peace to war, or the physical boundaries of crossroads and doorways. Examples include the two-faced Roman god Janus, or deities who spend half the year in the underworld, like Persephone.

Liminal deities guard the thresholds between states of being - day and night, childhood and adulthood, life and death. The ancients understood that change is violent. To move from one state to another requires the destruction of the old self. Liminal gods enforce the harsh, often painful laws of transformation and passing through their domain is a trial of endurance. They are not a friendly neighborhood mascots or a celestial superheroes defending the city out of sheer moral goodness and love for its citizens.

They are fiercely territorial and operate more like cosmic mob bosses running a protection racket. “Nice city you got here. Shame if a plague hit it.” You do not worship a tutelary river god for emotional self-actualization; you appease them with heavy sacrifices so they do not flood your crops and drown your children. Their morality is entirely geographically bound. They do not care if the citizens of their city are “good” or “evil”; they only care that the citizens belong to them, and that the proper tribute is paid.

Thus patriotism and religion become the exact same thing. A war between two city-states is a literal, theological war between their patron gods. Leaving your city means stepping outside of your god’s protection, making exile one of the most terrifying punishments imaginable. Furthermore, environmental changes - like damning a river or mining a sacred mountain - cannot be done merely with engineering; they require massive, state-sponsored theological bribes to avoid the immediate, violent wrath of the local deity.

The God of War

Because conflict is a universal driver of human history, the God of War is a centerpiece of almost every mythology. They range from the frenzied berserker (the Greek Ares, the Celtic Morrígan) to the cold, calculating tactician (the Greek Athena, the Egyptian Sekhmet).

Being chosen as the “Paladin” or “Champion” of the War God is a horrific curse. It means you are a sword in the hand of a deity. And what happens to a sword? It is swung, battered, and used in endless, exhausting combat until it inevitably shatters. A champion of this god will never be permitted to retire, find peace, or lay down their arms - because to stop fighting is to defy the very nature of the god that empowers them.

A Dysfunctional Family

A pantheon is also a web of relationships. In Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology, the gods are constantly arguing, marrying, deceiving, and warring with one another.

A common mistake in worldbuilding is treating a pantheon like a corporate organizational chart. We assign a CEO (the King of the Gods), a VP of Agriculture, a VP of War, and a Director of the Underworld. We assume they all stay in their respective lanes, politely managing their departments for the greater good of the cosmos.

But if we look at the mythologies of Olympus, Asgard, or Heliopolis, we see that they are not corporate boards; they are immensely powerful, deeply dysfunctional families. And because these entities are the literal personifications of fundamental forces, their family feuds end in drowned continents, ten-year wars, and generations of cursed bloodlines.

You must map their relationships.

Who is married to whom? Who stole a sacred artifact from their sibling three millennia ago? Who harbors a bitter, simmering resentment because they were given dominion over the cold earth instead of the shining sky?

Because the gods are vast, alien intelligences, their “petty” squabbles are actually the friction of incompatible realities grinding against one another. And in this cosmic drama, mortals are nothing more than collateral damage.

Consider the geopolitical implications. If the God of the Forge (representing civilization, industry, and control) holds an eternal grudge against the God of Nature (representing the untamed, the predatory, and the wild), their followers will inevitably bleed for it. A border dispute between an expanding, industrializing city-state and a nomadic, forest-dwelling tribe is no longer just an economic struggle over timber. It is a holy war. Diplomacy becomes nearly impossible, because compromising with the enemy city is tantamount to blaspheming your patron god. The gods’ relationships define your world’s alliances and embargoes.

Their own laws should also be contradictory.

If a sailor sacrifices a prized bull by throwing it into the waves to appease the Sea Goddess, they might secure safe passage, but they have simultaneously deeply offended the God of Agriculture, who demands that all bulls be slaughtered on his earthen altars. The mortal is caught in a cosmic catch-22. This friction creates a society, where priests act less like spiritual guides and more like desperate defense attorneys, trying to find loopholes that will satisfy one god without triggering the wrath of another.

Bargaining with the Divine

Understanding that your gods are alien, indifferent, or severe completely changes how your societies interact with them. If the gods are not your friends, religion becomes a matter of cosmic diplomacy. This forces us to re-evaluate how theology bleeds into the Politics and Justice of your world.

• Prayer is a Petition: Mortals do not pray to these gods to vent about their daily anxieties. They pray to negotiate. A prayer is a legal brief presented to a terrifying, uncaring cosmic judge: “I have burned the incense, I have spilled the blood, now spare my ships from the storm.”
