This week: TK Let’s shop!

A good under eye serum for fine lines (no budget).

I love it when this question comes with a high (or no) budget, because it means I get to recommend my favourite eye serum of all time. Everyone I recommend this to loves it and rebuys it continuously because you see such amazing results. I’ve seen it literally erase crow’s feet for some of my clients.

A mild exfoliator or toner for blackheads/enlarged pores (max £20).

Firstly, I’ll note that an exfoliator/toner won’t solve this skin concern on its own, and may even make enlarged pores appear worse if not used alongside the right combination of other products—cleanser, serum, moisturiser etc. Unless you have incredibly oily skin then I’d always avoid anything too harsh and opt for a PHA based product over a BHA. This toner isn’t necessarily the best one I’d recommend but it’s certainly the best one within this budget. It uses a very gentle acid called gluconolactone to exfoliate congestion from pores while niacinamide helps to reduce excess oil, while glycerin hydrates and aloe vera soothes.

A fake tan for face that won’t block pores (no budget).

Unfortunately a fake tan that doesn’t clog pores is a bit of an oxymoron. Due to the nature of how fake tan works (and how we want it to work), it literally has to sink in and stick in to our skin. While not every formula will necessarily cause horrendous congestion and breakouts, I’ve yet to use one that doesn’t settle into pores and make them look more visible, especially when used continually. For this reason I don’t use fake tan on my face at all anymore. However if I was to use one, it would be this one—I find it takes a little longer to build up than other formulas (which means it also looks quite subtle and natural), and it’s never given me breakouts.

A vitamin C serum (no budget).

Like most actives, vitamin C is an ingredient that it actually is worth spending more on. Not only will you get a more effective form of vitamin C, but the formula itself is likely to be well formulated to support skin to prevent sensitivity, and to keep itself stable so the ingredient remains potent and effective. This serum is my favourite to recommend—it’s another one where you will see visible results quite quickly, especially if you’re consistent with daily use.

Something to make my makeup look better when my skin is very dry (under £30).

A setting spray, specifically this one, will solve this issue. When skin is dry (and therefore thirsty) it likes to absorb the moisture from our makeup, which can make the makeup appear cakey or to have a “separated” effect. While working on your skin’s overall hydration will help to prevent this from happening in the long term, this spray is amazing for bringing makeup back to life and adding in an immediate injection of moisture. I love it for reviving makeup come 3pm, and it gives a great glow, too.

A body oil that actually sinks in rather than making everything slippery (under £40).

I hate the feeling of product sitting on my skin, especially body oils, but I find that mixing a few drops of the oil into a moisturiser can really help to alleviate this and helps the product to absorb quicker. While pretty much any body oil will feel slippery on skin, this is one of the thinner, “drier” ones that I’ve used. It’s lovely and hydrating, and smells amazing—I mix it with the matching body butter.

Something to use after picking a spot so I don't end up with a mark (no budget).

Picking spots is a guaranteed way to ensure you end up with a lingering mark, which may worsen into a scar, so stopping picking in the first place is your best bet here. I know that’s easier said than done, but when I work with clients who pick, we almost always find they their using spot patches makes the biggest difference. It not only prevents picking in the first place, but helps to flatten the spot and keep the skin protected from other external irritants. If you do still pick it, get the spot patch on straight away to again protect the broken skin and create a safe environment for healing. These ones are a recent discovery that I really rate. They look super invisible and don’t slide off.

What can I use on skin that's constantly tight after washing? (under £30).

Firstly, you probably need a change in cleanser, since skin should feel refreshed but comfortable after cleansing, and certainly not tight or stripped. Secondly, spray this on immediately post-cleanse and your skin will not only feel immediately soothed, but hydrated and nourished, too. It’s a game changing products that almost all of my clients are addicted to.

A really good mascara that does a bit of everything, volume, length, and curl (no budget).

I’ve recently started using this new one and I am obsessed. Very few mascaras actually tick all of the above boxes equally, while also being the kind of formula that doesn’t clump, smudge, or fade—but this one really does do it all. The curved wand gives such an amazing lift that I’ve stopped using my eyelash curler altogether.

A product for skin that suddenly can't tolerate products it used to love (no budget).

It sounds like your skin barrier has been compromised, so pausing on actives and ramping things up on the moisture front should be your plan of action here. I’d also grab a tube of this moisturiser, which is basically a one-stop skincare first aid kit. Use it as your night cream for the next week or two and I can guarantee that (providing you’ve also eliminated whatever was causing the issue in the first place), your skin will be back to normal in no time at all.

Looking for something in particular? On the one hand the ongoing slew of new launches continues—products that are set to release imminently, many of them appropriate to the season, others the “hero” products that brands will rely on to carry them through peak and into gifting season. Then (speaking of gifting season), on the other hand I’m receiving near daily emails for the launches of gift sets, festive collections, and of course, advent calendars. I received Liberty’s through in the mail during the most recent heatwave, which perfectly summed up how strange August can be for those who work in beauty. As for new launches, it’s been a busy month, particularly on the skincare front. This week, as promised, we’re flipping the coin and looking at the categories I’m happy to spend more on. Now, this doesn’t mean I think you need a £200 serum. You absolutely don’t. There are brilliant products at every price point, and I’d take a well-formulated £30 product over a mediocre £150 one every time. But after more than a decade of testing beauty products and treating skin, there are certain categories where I’ve noticed a much more obvious difference between the cheaper and more sophisticated options…

Usually, it comes down to something fairly boring and basic, which is how an ingredient has been formulated, whether it stays stable, how it is delivered to the skin, the quality of the raw materials, how much testing has gone into it, or, with devices, what the technology is actually capable of doing. A serum is a good example. Two bottles can both say vitamin C, peptides or hyaluronic acid on the front, but that doesn’t tell you much about how those ingredients will behave once you put the products on your face. The form of the ingredient, concentration, pH, supporting ingredients, stability, and packaging can all change the finished product considerably.

So, after last week’s savings lesson, these are the categories where I’m more inclined to spend.

This post is one I’ve written for my paid subscribers. This week: the one neck product I’ve used that’s actually made a difference, eyeshadows for grown ups, and a face mask that’s been in my routine since 2013. Let's shop!

A waterproof mascara, similar to the Haus Labs one if you’ve tried that (no budget).

I haven’t tried the Haus Labs one but having just checked out the brush size/shape and the formula (the two most important things at play here), I’m confident that this mascara would be a very worthy contender. I’m actually using it at the moment and have had so many compliments on my lashes. It’s really good at delivering lift and definition, and I’ve not had any issues with it going clumpy on application, either.

A skin tint (no budget).

I know the brand is rogue and maybe not so on-brand for me, but I genuinely rate this one. I use it most days for work, when I want a bit of coverage but nothing that looks or feels too heavy. It looks truly skin-like and gives skin a really fresh, healthy glow without being too shiny.

An anti-ageing product for my neck/chest area (under £60).

I don’t believe that anyone needs a separate product for their neck area. For the most part if you’re using a retinoid and a good hydrating serum and moisturiser, you can get away with just ensuring that you’re applying these down your neck rather than stopping at your jawline. If you do want a separate dedicated neck product then this would be the only one I’d recommend because I’ve genuinely seen it make a difference—and it actually is quite hard to budget stubborn neck lines once they’ve set in.

I recently threw away all my eyeshadow palettes and want to start my eyeshadow collection from scratch, but with just the essentials and more grown up (no budget).

I had the same epiphany a few years ago, and gained back some major storage cupboard real estate once all those supersized, half-used palettes were binned. I rarely wear eyeshadow these days, but if I do, it’s either these eyeshadows (single pans in a creamy powder formula that blends on really smoothly and without fallout) or (even easier), these stick eyeshadows which you literally just scribble on and then blend out to sheer the pigment. With both, you’ll only need one brush (or fingertip) unless you’re planning on being particularly creative and blending more than one shade.

A retinoid alternative for persistent chin/jaw spots (no budget).

A retinoid will always be the most effective solution for this kind of breakout, because it’s the only ingredient that works from the root to stop acne from forming—if you think of acne as a production line, retinoids start working right at the start of the line. However, I can appreciate that some people have very valid reasons for not being able to use retinoids. In which case, I’d opt for an azelaic acid serum instead. Azelaic acid starts working a little further down that production line by calming some of the processes that make acne worse, so it will help but it’s not as effective (ideally a formula that features both would be perfect). For best results, you something of prescription strength (I’d start here, where you can actually combine it with a retinoid if you want), but if not then you look for a product that clearly offers the maximum OTC strength, which in the UK is 10%—try this.

A hydrating serum for sensitive skin, bonus points if it makes me glowy (under £15).

I often forget about this serum, but a client who I’d previously recommended it to mentioned it the other day and I was reminded that I really must keep it front of mind for requests like this. It’s genuinely one of the best hydrating serums I’ve tried, not just within this price bracket. It’s very lightweight, non-sticky, feels like it instantly quenches skin’s thirst, and gives skin a really dewy finish—not for everyone, but if you’re after glow, you’ll love it.

A good pigmented brow pencil that’s easy to use (no budget).

It’s not cheap, but I really do think this one stands out compared to the many many brown pencils that I’ve tried over the years. The pencil isn’t too thick or too thin, doesn’t snap, isn’t so creamy that you lose definition in your strokes, and comes in a range of very life-like shades that don’t veer too warm or too cool.

A “detox” shampoo for a congested/flaky/oily scalp that doesn’t completely strip or irritate (under £20).

The risk with most shampoos in this category is that they cause irritation which can lead to a dry scalp (and therefore a different kind of flakiness), or that in stripping so much away they cause the skin to produce yet more oil. I’ve used and recommended this one countless times over the years—it’s one of the few I’ve tried and can confidently say does the job of a detoxifying shampoo, but without stripping too much away.

A multitasking cleanser (lazy gal here) to use in the shower in the morning (under £15).

I’m obsessed with this cleanser. A lovely thick (non-foaming and therefore non-stripping) gel texture—so super soothing, but still leaves skin feeling clean and fresh. It’s very very very gently exfoliating (thanks to a chemical exfoliant, not a physical one) so will help with things like congestion, texture, dullness, mild breakouts, pigmentation, without running risk of over exfoliation—even if used daily. What I would say is don’t expect miracles from a cleanser, it’s on your face for seconds, so it can’t replace a serum or moisturiser when it comes to hydrating or delivering active ingredients.

A hydrating gel mask for sensitive, breakout prone skin (under £40).

This is more of a gel-cream than a straight up gel, but it’s one of the best masks you can use if you’re dealing with skin that’s both breakout-prone and sensitive (a lot of the masks marketed at acne are too much for sensitive skin). It was one of the first products that really made a difference to my acne when it was at its worst and I’ve had a tube on my shelf ever since for breakout emergencies. I’ve tested £3 serums, £300 neck creams, supermarket skincare, celebrity brands, products with waiting lists, and products that went viral and are now gathering dust on the bottom shelf of Boots. But along the way I soon learned that the most expensive option was not automatically the best one…

Of course, things have changed a lot during my time in the industry, so I’ve had an interesting viewpoint over the past decade. Ten years ago, there was a much clearer divide between what you could buy at a department store counter and what you could pick up in the supermarket. But then came brands like The Ordinary, which pretty much single-handedly turned the industry on its head. Ingredients were given a whole new focus, consumers were learning the difference between niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and skincare became less about prestige and more about formulation. Brands could no longer justify charging triple the price simply because they wrapped a cream in heavy glass packaging and called it ‘advanced’.

Thanks to social media, ingredient information became widely accessible, and beauty insiders started questioning whether a £150 moisturiser was actually outperforming one that cost £15. More recently, the rise of dupe culture has pushed that conversation to an extreme. While I think we’ve reached a point where some brands are duping the consumer and not the product (which deserves a discussion of its own, maybe? lmk) it has made shoppers far more comfortable with shopping lower price tags.

But, as beauty has become more transparent, it’s also become more expensive. Prices have increased, often without any comparable improvement in formulation or performance. I see this first hand in a lot of the editing work I do for Who What Wear, where I update articles that were published a year ago, mainly to reflect vast changes in pricing that have occurred during that short space of time.

Of course, that’s not to say expensive beauty is always a waste of money. It isn’t. There are categories where higher prices are justified, more sophisticated formulations, or ingredients that are difficult to replicate on a budget. I’ll be talking about those next week. But there are also products where spending three, four, or even ten times more makes almost no meaningful difference to the end result. You’re probably paying for the packaging or the marketing campaign rather than something your skin or hair can actually benefit from.

This post is one I’ve written for my paid subscribers. This week: lip plumping without filler, whether clear mascara is actually worth buying, and what to wear if you work in hospitality and can't douse yourself in perfume. Let's shop!

My lip filler is wearing off and I don't want to get it redone just yet—what will give me a good plumping effect? (max £30).
This is literally me right now so I can give you a highly personal rec! I honestly thought my lip plumper days were over (it feels a bit teeny, right?) until I discovered this a few years ago. It’s much more “elevated” than your average lip plumper because it doesn’t rely on that burning/tingling sensation to temporarily make your lips swell—it actually uses hyaluronic acid and peptides to draw moisture into the lips and naturally plump them. I know I know, it sounds too good to be true, but legit works—you’ll instantly notice an obviously fuller-looking lip, while the formula also helps to improve hydration in the long term, too.

A clear mascara—is it even worth the hype? (no budget).
Oh I’ve fallen victim to the clear mascara hype so many times over the years, only to end in yet another bottle of Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara languishing in the bottom of my makeup drawer. Clear mascara can (could?) be useful if all you want is a tiny bit of separation and to hold a curl, but once you take away the pigment, you’re asking mascara to do… nothing. I certainly don’t think the difference is significant enough to warrant buying it, and if you’re after a really natural, barely-there effect, I’d much rather use a brown mascara. The new Merit one is my current favourite—it adds subtle definition and length, and the brown is soft enough that you won’t feel too made up. I guess that’s basically the concept of clear mascara, but better?

A really, really basic moisturiser for my husband who has combination skin prone to breakouts (max £30).
My brother came to me with this exact request a few months ago. I handed him a tube of this moisturiser, and he’s now totally hooked. He’s not big into skincare at all and I’ve never once known him be loyal to a product I’ve given him, so that’s saying a lot. Despite being quite rich in texture, it doesn't feel greasy or occlusive in the way you might expect from a thicker cream, it’s just a really good no-frills moisturiser that does that it say on the <s>tin</s> tube.

An eye cream for sensitive eyes (no budget).
For anything sensitive-eye related, La Roche-Posay is always my go-to, but this is a tricky one to answer without knowing what you're actually trying to treat. But if sensitivity is your main concern and you just want something comforting and hydrating, I’d stick with with this one.

I work in hospitality and can't wear overly strong scents, but would love a recommendation for a subtle perfume (under £100).
I get it, working in hospitality is one of the few occasions where you don’t want your perfume arriving in the room before you do—especially if you’re working alongside food. It’s the same reason why scented candles in dining rooms are a bit of a no no. But, I have just the perfume to recommend to you! This one. It contains just one molecule, Iso E Super, which sits very close to the skin (unlike a traditional perfume with lots of different notes competing for attention). What I love about it is that it doesn't necessarily smell the same to everyone, or even smell all the time—you might get little wafts of it as you move, and then moments where you can't smell it at all. If anything, to me it's woody, warm, kinda musky but it’s certainly not obviously perfumey.

A sunscreen that doesn’t stain white shirts (no budget).
I’m hesitant to promise any sunscreen won’t stain clothing because there are so many variables involved. Filters and emollients can transfer onto fabric, and then you’ve got everything else that comes into contact with your clothes during the day too. With that said, if it is your biggest concern, this one I can personally recommend. The brand specifically says it won't stain clothing, and I tested it for a week in Malta (while wearing a white shirt most days) and had no issues. I would still give it a few minutes to sink in before getting dressed, to be on the dafe side.

An affordable body moisturiser (max £15).
I really like this one for pretty much every skin type, except maybe very dry. It's a lightweight, water-based cream that gives skin plenty of hydration without leaving any sticky body-lotion residue left behind. It's basically a body version of one of my most frequently recommended face moisturisers (regular readers, IYKYK), and at this price you won’t feel the need to ration it.

I picked up the Sofie Pavitt mandelic acid serum on holiday but it’s sadly run out, can you recommend an alternative product that's available in the UK please (max £60).
Ugh, the sooner Sofie Pavitt launches over here the better because we have a major gap in the market! Mandelic is one of my favourite acids because it’s so gentle, and it's especially good if you're dealing with texture and breakouts. Sadly, I don’t have a like for like serum recommendation, but this exfoliating toner is mostly powered by mandelic (plus a little lactic). I use it in facials on my sensitive skin clients and have never had any issues with it.

A makeup product that makes you look more awake without looking like you’re wearing makeup, i.e. nothing too glittery (under £30).
Years ago when I worked on counters, a fellow makeup artist told me that the biggest mistake she sees people make is applying their foundation and then nothing else. Foundation evens out skin, yes, but in doing so it removes the little bit of colour that we kind of need to look… alive. Our cheeks naturally have some redness, so it makes sense that when you take it away without putting anything back, the face can look a bit lifeless and dull. I love these blushers because the shades are sheer enough to look like your own skin and not an obvious layer of makeup. They also last all day. This week’s requests include treatments for hormonal acne and hyperpigmentation, makeup solutions for combination skin, and everything you need to know about azelaic acid.

The best azelaic acid, plus when it’s worth using and how to use it (no budget).

Azelaic acid is brilliant for acne, post-inflammatory marks, rosacea, pigmentation, and general redness, making it one of the most versatile actives you can add to a routine. It works by reducing inflammation, normalising the way skin cells shed inside the pore (sp helping to prevent congestion), and slowing excess pigment production, which is why it’s so effective at tackling both active breakouts and the marks they leave behind. I tend to recommend using it in your evening routine after cleansing and before moisturiser, introducing it gradually if your skin is sensitive. If budget isn’t a concern (and you really want to see results), I’d recommend getting it through Skin + Me. They can prescribe higher-strength azelaic acid than you’ll find on the shelf, often alongside other ingredients that complement your skin concerns, making it a much more effective long-term approach (I personally use this!). If you would rather buy something off the shelf, this serum is excellent.

Something (salicylic acid-free) to combat persistent jaw and chin spots and dark marks (no budget).

For this combination of concerns, I’d skip salicylic acid anyway and go straight to a retinoid. Jawline and chin breakouts are often hormonal in nature, so while salicylic acid can certainly help keep pores clear, a retinoid tends to be much more effective because it tackles the root causes of congestion while also speeding up the fading of post-breakout marks. It works by increasing cell turnover, preventing dead skin cells from blocking pores, reducing inflammation, and stimulating collagen production over time—all of which helps with both active acne and the pigmentation or redness that’s left behind. This is one of the best beginner-friendly retinoids I’ve come across because it’s potent enough to make a visible difference without feeling too aggressive. If you’re dealing with recurring jawline breakouts, there’s little point focusing purely on the marks while new spots continue to appear, but a retinoid addresses both concerns simultaneously. Win, win.

A glycolic or PHA toner as a better alternative to Medik8 Press & Glow or PIXI Glow Tonic (max £40 budget).

You’re right in thinking that there are better alternatives to PIXI Glow Tonic, although I do think that Medik8’s Press & Glow is one of the better options on the market when it comes to exfoliating toners. But you’re in luck, because this brilliant one launched last week. I personally think there is more benefit in using an exfoliating toner that contains a wide variety of lower strength exfoliating acids than using a strong one that relies on just one or two ingredients. This one contains glycolic, phytic, malic, mandelic, and lactic acids so it helps to gently target multiple areas of concern at once. Glycolic acid works on the surface of the skin to encourage cell turnover and improve brightness, while gentler acids like mandelic and lactic acid provide exfoliation with a lower risk of irritation (particularly useful if you’re someone who is prone to sensitivity). Phytic acid is also a really nice addition because it has antioxidant properties and can help with the appearance of uneven tone. The result is smoother, clearer, more luminous skin, but without any unwanted tight, over-exfoliated feeling that can happen with stronger acid toners (looking at you, PIXI Glow Tonic).

A product to clean my Current Body LED mask with after each use (no budget).

I use these wipes both at home and in my studio because they're quick, effective, and specifically designed to disinfect surfaces without leaving behind any residue that could damage equipment. Before and after each LED session, I give the inside of the mask a good wipe and then allow it to air dry before using it or putting it away. It might seem like a faff, but it’s an important step, particularly if you're using your mask several times a week, as it helps prevent the buildup of oil, sweat, skincare residue, and bacteria.

Something to prevent and heal hormonal breakouts on postpartum combination skin (no budget).

Postpartum breakouts are largely driven by fluctuating hormones, which means even the best topical skincare can’t always stop them from appearing in the first place—so I think it’s helpful to separate prevention from treatment. Once you’ve finished breastfeeding (if you are), I’d be looking at introducing a retinoid as a long-term preventative because it’s one of the most effective ingredients we have for reducing recurring acne (the one linked above for question two would be ideal). But while your hormones are settling, I’d focus on helping spots heal as quickly and gently as possible with something like this. Unlike many traditional spot treatments, it’s free from both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, making it a safer option if you’re breastfeeding or simply trying to keep your routine as gentle as possible. It helps calm inflammation, reduce redness, and encourages breakouts to heal more quickly without leaving the surrounding skin dry or irritated.

A foundation and setting powder that don’t make makeup go cakey for combination skin (no budget).

Powder almost always exaggerates the imbalance of combination skin by clinging to drier patches while sitting nicely on the oily ones, so I’d actually recommend skipping the powder altogether if you’re experiencing cakiness. Instead, rather than setting everything with powder, I’d use a setting spray to lock your makeup into place instead. I find it gives much longer-lasting results without sacrificing the look of the skin underneath. This is one of the best I’ve tried, and comes in a mattfiying or a glowy formula, depending on your preference. Foundation-wise, I really rate this one (in the natural finish for combo skin). The formula is lightweight, skin-like, and buildable without ever feeling heavy.

Something for KP on the back of my legs (mid-range budget).

Keratosis pilaris (or KP) is incredibly common and happens when keratin—a protein naturally produced by the skin—builds up around the opening of the hair follicle. Rather than the skin shedding normally, those tiny plugs become trapped, creating the rough bumps that are sometimes described as “chicken skin”. Unfortunately, there’s no permanent cure because it’s largely genetic, so even when you improve it, it does tend to return if you don’t stay consistent with treating it. One of the easiest products I’ve found is this exfoliating body stick. The stick format makes it really quick and mess-free to apply, while the glycolic acid gently dissolves the buildup of dead skin that’s contributing to those rough bumps. Used consistently a few times a week, it helps smooth the texture of the skin over time without the need for harsh scrubs.

A product for hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage (no budget).

Hyperpigmentation develops when the skin produces excess melanin, its natural pigment, in response to inflammation or UV exposure. In the case of sun damage, those pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) become overstimulated and begin producing more melanin than the surrounding skin, resulting in dark patches or uneven tone. The frustrating thing is that this process doesn’t just happen after one holiday—it can be the result of years of cumulative sun exposure, with UV and heat simply reactivating the pigment each summer and making it more visible. This serum is one of my favourite products because it tackles pigmentation from multiple angles rather than relying on a single brightening ingredient. Instead of simply exfoliating the surface of the skin, it works higher up the pigmentation pathway, helping to reduce excess melanin production while also encouraging existing pigment to disperse more evenly through normal skin renewal. Over time, it helps fade dark patches, improve overall skin tone, and reduce the likelihood of new pigmentation becoming as pronounced. Of course, as with any pigmentation treatment, consistency is key—you’re looking at months rather than weeks for the best results. And just as importantly, you need to protect the progress you’re making. UV light is what signals melanocytes to produce more pigment, so wearing a broad-spectrum SPF every single day (and reapplying it properly) is what stops those cells from continually switching back on and undoing all of your hard work.

A vegan omega supplement (under £20).

Omegas are one of my favourite supplements to take and to recommend. They’re beneficial not just for overall health but also for skin health, both for moisturising purposes (obvious) and for their ability to keep pores clear and prevent congestion (not so obvious). Most non-vegan omega supplements are made from oily fish, which naturally contain high levels of EPA and DHA—the two forms of omega-3 that the body can use most readily. This is why fish oil is generally considered the gold standard, because you’re getting these beneficial fatty acids directly rather than relying on the body to convert them. Vegan omega supplements are usually made from algae oil, which is actually where fish get their omega-3 from in the first place (they accumulate it by eating algae). The main difference is that many vegan options contain DHA but lower amounts of EPA, and the conversion process from plant-based sources can be less efficient. However, a good quality algae-based supplement is still a really effective option if you don’t consume fish.

For a vegan option, I recommend these ones. Despite the name, you absolutely don’t need to be pregnant, trying to conceive, or female to take them. Vegan omegas are often recommended during pregnancy because they use a purified algae-derived omega-3, meaning there’s no concern around potential traces of mercury or heavy metals that can be a consideration with some marine sources. They provide a good amount of DHA (the form particularly important for brain and eye health), making them one of the better vegan alternatives if you’re looking for a high-quality omega supplement without fish oil.

Something to treat and pamper myself while heavily pregnant (no budget).

More indulgent than a traditional body cream, this solid bar melts beautifully against warm post-shower/bath skin, leaving it feeling deeply nourished without the mess of pumping lotion into your hands. It also smells absolutely gorgeous, turning what can feel like another chore into a proper self-care ritual. The specific one I’ve linked is marketed towards pregnancy and stretch mark prevention, but I wouldn’t read too much into those claims. Stretch marks are largely influenced by genetics and how the skin stretches during pregnancy, so no topical product can guarantee they’ll be prevented.

Looking for something in particular? Today actually marks one whole year of The Weekly Shop on Substack (although long-term followers will know that in its Instagram form I’ve been recommending and linking under TWS since pre-Covid times)! Thank you to everyone who reads, shops, submits requests, and especially to those of you who have become paid subscribers—as a freelance writer and self-employed girly, I appreciate you and your support so much. Anyway, let’s shop—this week’s requests range from long-lasting lip liners and heatproof setting sprays to hardwater shampoos and the best products to buy from Prequel.

A hair spray for low maintenance beachy waves (max £40).

This spray arrived on my doorstep the day before I went on holiday so naturally I threw it in my suitcase and road-tested it in a perfect environment. My hair is naturally quite straight, so when I air dry it I need a little bit of help to encourage some shape and movement, and this gives exactly that (without making it look like I’ve tried too hard). It gives hair grip, separation, and that slightly tousled “spent the day by the sea” finish, but without the dryness or crunch that a lot of salt sprays can leave behind. Definitely one of the easiest ways to make straight hair look a little more effortless for summer.

A dry brush for full body exfoliating (no budget).

As someone who’s been on the receiving end of a lot of beauty mailers featuring dry brushes, I can confidentially say that a good dry brush is one of those products that's worth spending a little more on because the quality really does make a difference. Cheaper versions often have very harsh, uneven bristles that can scratch the skin or will start shedding after a few uses. This one is beautifully made, with natural bristles that are firm enough to properly exfoliate but still comfortable to use. Dry brushing won't magically detoxify the body or remove cellulite (despite what social media might tell you), but it is fantastic for gently removing dead skin cells, smoothing rough patches, and improving the overall feel of the skin. I also find it helps body products absorb more effectively afterwards because you're applying them onto freshly exfoliated skin.

I want to try out Prequel but don't know where to start—which one product would you recommend most (combination skin, no budget)?
Without hesitation, I'd start with this cleanser. It's one of those rare formulas that I think works brilliantly across almost every skin type, whether you're oily, dry, sensitive, acne-prone, or like you, somewhere in between. The formula uses a high concentration of glycerin to hydrate as it cleanses, so instead of leaving your skin feeling tight or squeaky afterwards, it feels soft, comfortable, and balanced. It removes daily grime, SPF, and excess oil beautifully without disrupting the skin barrier, which is something surprisingly few cleansers manage (a big part of Prequel’s MO), and functions well for both morning and evening cleansing. If you’re a double cleansing fan then I’d also recommend adding in this oil cleanser, and if you’re not yet using a hypochlorous acid in your routine, the Prequel one is brilliant (if a little spenny).

A lip liner that stays put (no budget, but from Sephora).

I remember the first time I used this lip liner—applying it in the morning and wearing throughout a day of socialising (and eating)—and being genuinely amazed that it stayed exactly where I put it when I faced a mirror at the end of the day. The formula has just enough grip to prevent feathering or fading throughout the day, but it's still creamy enough to glide on without dragging the lips. It also helps that it comes with a built-in setter on the opposite end, which helps lock everything in place and gives the edges a really clean, defined finish.

A replacement for the Zitsticka Killa patches which I can’t seem to find any more (under £15).

RIP Zitsticka! I used to recommend those patches all the time, and then they just disappeared—I don’t even know if the brand went bust or they just left the UK market…weird. But, if you were a fan of the Killa patches, I'd point you towards these as a replacement (they actually only just launched this week, if you’d asked this question a few weeks ago I wouldn’t have had a worthy alternative to recommend!). They follow a very similar concept, using tiny dissolving microdarts to deliver active ingredients beneath the surface of the skin, rather than simply sitting on top like a standard hydrocolloid patch. That makes them particularly effective for those deeper, painful, cystic or papular spots that haven't come to a head. The addition of salicylic acid helps reduce congestion while the microdarts encourage the ingredient to reach the area that's actually inflamed. They're one of the closest alternatives I've found and work particularly well when you catch a breakout early.

A lip SPF for sensitive skin (no budget).

The lips are one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to sun protection, despite having very little melanin to naturally defend themselves against UV damage. They’re also prone to dryness, pigmentation, and premature ageing, so applying SPF here is just as important as it is on the rest of your face. This protective balm is my favourite because it feels like a genuinely lovely lip balm first and an SPF second—I use it regularly on clients during facials throughout the summer. It’s nourishing, comfortable to wear, and doesn’t have that unpleasant sunscreen taste or texture that so many SPF lip products suffer from. Plus, it’s formulated by a brand that takes sunscreen formulation seriously (pick up their serum or cream SPF while you’re there).

A product to stop makeup sliding off in hot, humid weather (oily skin, under £35).
If your makeup disappears the moment the temperature creeps above 20 degrees, this setting spray is the one I'd recommend. Unlike a lot of setting sprays that simply melt your powders together or add a bit of hydration, this one actually creates a lightweight film over the makeup that helps lock everything into place. It's particularly good for oily skin because it controls shine without making the complexion look flat or chalky, and it genuinely holds up in humidity where so many other sprays fail. It has developed something of a cult following for a reason, and while there are a lot of other setting sprays that I love for different reasons, for your concerns in particular this one is perfect.

A product that doubles as skincare and makeup for easy day to day maintenance (no budget).

No makeup product can truly replace a proper skincare routine—your skin will always benefit from dedicated cleansing, hydration, and sun protection—but if you're looking for makeup that also offers genuine skincare benefits, this CC cream is one of the best examples. It starts off as a white lotion but contains encapsulated pigments that adapt as you blend it into the skin, leaving behind a natural, "your skin but better" finish. Alongside evening out redness and giving lightweight coverage, it's packed with hydrating and soothing ingredients that help support the skin throughout the day rather than simply masking it. It's one of those products I recommend time and time again on here because it makes skin look healthier, fresher, and more radiant with very little effort—perfect if you want to streamline your morning routine (and don’t we all).

A shampoo for hair that becomes dry from swimming pools and sea water (max £30).

I spent the past week in Malta and had this exact problem. Between the sea, chlorine, sunscreen, and washing my hair more frequently than usual (in Malta’s extremely hard water), it felt noticeably drier and rougher than usual, particularly through the mid-lengths and ends. Since I got back I’ve only used this shampoo. Although it’s designed as a clarifying shampoo, it strikes that perfect balance of thoroughly cleansing away chlorine, salt, sunscreen, and mineral buildup without leaving your hair feeling stripped. Instead, it leaves everything feeling soft, light, and properly refreshed—much more manageable.

A base makeup brush worth investing in (max £30).
If I could only own one makeup brush, it would be this one. In fact, I own five of them because I rotate them throughout the week so that I always have a clean(ish) one on the go. I had a big cull of my makeup brush collection a few months ago because I so rarely want to use anything else—that's how much I rate it. It works beautifully with absolutely everything: skin tints, liquid foundation, cream foundation, powder foundation, even concealer. The densely packed bristles blend products seamlessly without leaving streaks or soaking up half the formula, so you get that really natural, sponge-smooth finish every time. It's also incredibly well made. Mine have never shed, they wash beautifully (and I’m a frequent brush washer), and they've held their shape despite constant use.

Looking for something in particular? Because while daily SPF has become a non-negotiable for many of us, as an esthetician I still hear the same excuses time and time again: “I forget to reapply”, “I only need it on holiday”, “I don’t like how it feels”, or “I always burn in the same spots”.

The good news? Sunscreen has never been more innovative. Not retinol, not vitamin C, not the latest viral face mask—just a really good SPF that you’ll actually want to wear every single day. And if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance I’m preaching to the choir. Chances are you’ve already found a sunscreen you love (or at least tolerate), you know why daily UV protection matters, and you’ve probably become that person reminding everyone else to wear theirs.

As an esthetician, though, one conversation comes up time and time again. Clients will tell me they wear sunscreen every day, but their partner refuses because it “feels greasy”, their mum still thinks SPF is only for holidays, or their best friend insists every formula breaks them out. Everyone seems to know someone who has an excuse.

The truth is, a lot of those excuses were fair enough ten years ago. But sunscreens have come a long way since the thick, chalky creams and sticky lotions many of us grew up with. Today, there are featherlight fluids that disappear into oily skin, dewy formulas that double as glowing primers, invisible SPFs for deeper skin tones, sprays for protecting your scalp, and options specifically designed to be reapplied over makeup. Whatever someone’s skin type, tone, routine, or lifestyle, there’s almost certainly a sunscreen that fits.

So rather than simply rounding up the best sunscreens on the market, I’ve matched 23 of my favourites to the people who need them most. You’ll find 12 below, and next week’s dispatch will cover the remaining 11. So, whether you’re trying to convince your SPF-phobic boyfriend, a friend who swears sunscreen always causes breakouts, or the person who only remembers it when it’s sunny, consider this your guide to finding the sunscreen they’ll finally stop making excuses not to wear. And if it saves one more person from skipping SPF, I’d call that a very worthwhile recommendation.

This post is one I’ve written for my paid subscribers. This week’s requests include products to help with skin during rosacea and perioral dermatitis flare ups, as well as recommendations for cream blush, SPF, and firming body creams. Let’s shop!

Would love anything that can help with perioral dermatitis, any tips and a gentle cleanser and moisturiser (acne-prone skin, no budget).

Perioral dermatitis is one of those conditions where the biggest mistake people make is focusing purely on treating the flare up, rather than working out why it’s happening in the first place. The most important thing you can do is identify your triggers, because if you don’t, it’s very likely to keep coming back. Common triggers can include certain toothpastes, overuse of actives, heavy occlusive skincare, steroid creams, or changes in the skin barrier. Once you understand your triggers, managing it becomes much easier. During a flare up, I’d keep things incredibly simple. This cleanser is a great gentle option because it cleanses without stripping or disrupting the barrier, while this moisturiser is brilliant for calming and supporting irritated skin. Once the skin is more settled, I’d introduce something like this serum, which is one of the only products I stock in my studio (DM me to purchase) because it’s the best thing I’ve found for clients with reactive and acne-prone skin. It helps support the skin microbiome and barrier, and helps skin to become much calmer and less prone to recurring irritation when used consistently.

A cream blush that looks natural and lasts all day in hot weather (under £40).
This has become one of my everyday makeup staples. I personally use it and love it because it genuinely stays put—even on long work days when I’m in front of a steamer and my face is dealing with heat, humidity, and everything that comes with being in a treatment room. The formula is creamy and easy to blend, but once it settles, it has much better longevity than a lot of cream blushes. The shades are really wearable too, giving that natural flush rather than an obvious “I’m wearing blush” look—I wear Piggy.

An LED device that isn’t a mask (no budget).

This is one where I’d actually say don’t bother. I completely understand the appeal—something smaller, easier to travel with, or that lets you target specific areas sounds great in theory—but the way LED therapy works means you’re often compromising on the very thing that makes it effective: consistent, even exposure across the skin. With LED, it’s not just about having a device that emits light. The wavelength, intensity (irradiance), and the amount of time your skin is exposed all matter. You need to deliver a certain dose of light to the skin to see meaningful benefits, whether that’s supporting collagen production, calming inflammation, or helping with acne. A small targeted device can technically work, but you’re only treating a fraction of the area. For example, an eye-shaped LED device might be useful if your only concern is fine lines around the eyes, but since those concerns are ultimately going to appear elsewhere, you’re missing the majority of your face. The handheld LED devices are a complete waste of money. They look convenient because you can move them around and focus on different areas, but LED isn’t like applying a spot treatment where a quick sweep over the skin is enough. You need to hold the device at the correct distance over each section of your face for the recommended amount of time to deliver an effective dose. Realistically, to treat your whole face properly, you’d need to sit there moving it around for a long time—which makes it much less likely you’ll use it consistently. And consistency is everything with LED. The other thing to be aware of is that a lot of smaller LED devices are built around convenience rather than performance. Some have fewer LEDs, lower output, or don’t provide enough information about their wavelengths and energy output, which makes it difficult to know whether you’re actually getting a therapeutic dose. It’s a bit like buying a treadmill that technically moves, but not fast enough to actually improve your fitness—you have the technology, but not necessarily the results. If you’re investing in LED, I’d always rather see someone buy one good device and use it consistently than spend money on something that’s cheaper or more convenient but ultimately delivers a less effective treatment. As always, the only at-home LED device I recommend is the this one because it’s backed by the right technology, uses clinically studied wavelengths, delivers the correct exposure, and (perhaps most importantly) is practical enough that you’ll actually use it regularly. It’s a classic case of buy once, rather than buying a cheaper alternative and ending up replacing it later. Sorry for the long answer, but I really don’t like to see people waste their money when there are genuinely good devices out there.

The lightest possible body moisturiser (normal skin, max £20).

You’ll love this one. It’s basically the body version of the brand’s daily moisturiser, which I recommend all the time because it gets the balance between hydration and weightlessness exactly right. The texture is almost gel-like, sinks in instantly, and leaves skin feeling soft without any greasy residue. It’s perfect for anyone who dislikes traditional body lotions that sit on the skin, especially in warmer weather when you want hydration but don’t want to feel like you’re wearing a literal layer.

Refreshing eye patches for tired eyes (no budget).

As budget isn’t a concern, I’d go straight for these ones. These are some of my favourites because they’re huge, so they actually cover a generous area around the eye rather than just sitting directly underneath the eye. They also have that lovely cooling effect even when you haven’t remembered to put them in the fridge (although I always recommend chilling eye patches if you have time). They’re brilliant for tired-looking eyes because they combine that instant cooling, depuffing effect with hydration, making them one of those products that gives you a very quick “I look more awake” result.

A firming body cream (no budget).

If you’re specifically looking for firmness, I’d skip a standard hydrating body cream and go for something with a more active formula. Hydration can absolutely make skin look smoother and healthier, but ingredients like retinol are where you start to see more meaningful changes in texture and firmness over time. This is one of my favourites because it brings the same approach we take with facial skincare into body care. Retinol helps encourage cell turnover and supports collagen production, which can improve the appearance of crepey texture, uneven tone, and loss of firmness.

An SPF for summer (combination skin, no budget).

This is one of those SPFs that really understands what people want from an everyday sunscreen: lightweight, comfortable, and protective without making the skin feel greasy. It has a beautiful skin-like finish—not overly matte, not overly shiny—and sits really well under makeup. I especially love it for summer because it feels elegant enough that you’ll actually want to apply the right amount and reapply when needed, which is ultimately what makes an SPF effective.

A body product to help with uneven texture and “strawberry legs” (under £100).
For uneven body texture, clogged pores, and strawberry legs, I’d recommend this. It works by combining exfoliating ingredients to help remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can contribute to rough texture and blocked follicles, while also supporting smoother, brighter-looking skin. The key with this kind of product is consistency—you don’t need to use it every day, but used regularly (1-2 times a month), it can make a really noticeable difference to the overall texture of the skin, particularly on areas like the legs where pores can look more prominent.

A face mist alternative to the discontinued Glossier one (no budget).

If you were a fan of the old Glossier face mist, I think this is probably one of the closest alternatives. It has that same lovely rose scent and comforting, refreshing feel, but what makes it more than just a dupe because it smells the same is the formula. It’s rich in glycerin, a humectant that helps attract and hold water in the skin, so it gives that same immediate hydrated, fresh finish rather than just sitting on top of the skin feeling like water.

Something to reduce rosacea (fair and sensitive skin, no budget).

The first thing I’d say with rosacea is that it’s an underlying inflammatory skin condition, so it’s not something that can be permanently “removed” with a skincare product. The goal is to manage it, reduce triggers, and support the skin so it becomes less reactive over time. This is why barrier support and consistency are so important. Again, this serum is one of my favourite recommendations for rosacea-prone skin (message me to purchase if you’re in the UK). I use it with a lot of my sensitive skin clients, and my rosacea clients in particular love it because they find it helps noticeably calm and mute redness when used consistently. It works by supporting the skin microbiome and strengthening the barrier, which can make the skin more resilient and less likely to overreact to everyday triggers.

Looking for something in particular? I’ve tested the mousses that promise “no transfer”, the lotions that claim to be “your skin but better”, the drops that supposedly won’t clog pores, the formulas that swear they don’t smell like fake tan (spoiler alert: they do). I’ve gone too orange, too streaky, too patchy, too dark, and I’ve definitely experienced the particular panic of looking at your hands after applying tan and realising you now have what can only be described as a forensic crime scene…

But after years of trial and error, I’ve realised that fake tan is actually much less complicated than we make it. The difference between a good tan and a bad tan usually isn’t the product itself—it’s the technique, the timing, and understanding what fake tan is actually doing to your skin.

So, here is everything I’ve ever learned about fake tanning from over a decade as a beauty editor—from the things that genuinely make a difference to the “rules” I I finally caved and bought the two things I have always considered to be unnecessary in a country that sees more rainy days than sunny ones—a barbecue and a fan—so I’m sure that will signal the end of summer from here on in... But despite the sleepless nights and tendency for train delays, I secretly love a heatwave. Working from the garden, late night walks for fro-yo, salad for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and flip-flops (see below) with every outfit is a life I could totally get on board with, so I’m already dreading the return to our cloudy and cool normality tomorrow. I’ve spent as much time as possible outside this past week—eating in the garden, attempting to grow vegetables, reading in the evenings, and generally trying to make the most of the heatwave while it lasted. And in that context, with our weeks of rain completely eclipsed by this recent sunny one, this month’s roundup probably feels particularly seasonal: good food, summer beauty favourites, weddings, gardening, and a few excellent Manchester discoveries.

New launches, new ingredients, new brands, new trends. The industry moves quickly, and there’s always something waiting to replace whatever you’re currently using. No doubt off the back of the recent heatwave, this week’s requests include cooling eye patches, effective deodorant, gradual tan, and SPF that doesn’t stain. Let’s shop!

A lipstick for someone who hates topping up lipstick (under £35).
I've been wearing this almost every day recently and it's exactly the sort of product I'd recommend to someone who can't be bothered with lipstick maintenance. It feels more like a balm than a lipstick—lightweight, comfortable, and almost impossible to apply badly—but somehow it lasts far longer than you'd expect. I'm constantly surprised when I catch my reflection hours later and realise it's still there. The shades are beautiful, the formula is incredibly forgiving, and it gives enough colour to make a difference without demanding constant touch-ups.

The best products to buy from a French pharmacy on my trip to France (any budget).

My husband recently went to France and I sent him off with a very specific skincare shopping list, because while a lot of French pharmacy staples are now readily available here in the UK, there are still a few things that are either much cheaper in France or not yet sold over here. The absolute non-negotiable is a 2-pack of this iconic micellar water—it’s available in Boots, but the French pharmacy pricing makes it a no-brainer to stock up. Truly the best makeup remover you’ll ever use. I also always bulk buy Elmex toothpaste when I’m in Europe. It’s actually Swiss, but it’s one of the best I’ve used for long-term gum health and enamel protection. Boring but practical! Homeoplasmine is another must-have; it’s essentially an all-purpose soothing balm but I use it mostly as a lip balm, especially when my lips feel very dry in the winter. Biafine is great for sunburn. And finally, Laluset is one I often pick up for very dry or compromised skin—it’s a very powerful hyaluronic acid cream which, weirdly, you’ll have to request from the pharmacist—so brush up on your French.

A gradual tan that doesn’t feel greasy or go streaky (under £20).
I saw Jules von Hep recommend this gradual tan and, while I normally prefer a tanning mousse, I’ll try anything he suggests when it comes to tanning. I’ve been using it for the past week and I’m genuinely impressed. The texture is really lightweight and feels more like a hydrating body lotion than a traditional self-tan, which makes it incredibly easy to apply without streaking or patchiness. It builds gradually into a natural-looking glow rather than anything too intense or obvious, and it fades really evenly. It also has a surprisingly nice scent, which is always a bonus in the gradual tan category.

The best under-eye patches, I’m getting no sleep in this heat (any budget).
Cooling is going to be a huge part of the benefit here which is why I’d recommend these specific eye patches. They’re brilliant in these conditions because they deliver that instant cooling and depuffing effect while also hydrating and plumping the skin, which helps soften the appearance of fine lines that tend to look more pronounced when you’re tired. They’re not going to fix sleep deprivation, but they do a very good job of taking the edge off it—especially when heat is making everything look a bit more swollen and fatigued. I always recommend keeping eye patches in the fridge anyway (especially in hot weather), because the chilled temperature helps constrict blood vessels, reduce puffiness, and instantly make the eye area look more awake.

How to achieve plumpness in skin when the effect of products doesn’t last long enough (any budget).
This really depends quite a lot on age, skin type, and what’s actually causing the loss of plumpness in the first place—so it’s not a completely one-size-fits-all situation and it’s hard for me to give you a truly personalised answer without this information. In most cases, hydration is the starting point. But the key detail people miss is how they’re using hydrating products. They tend to layer them onto dry skin and hope for the best, when in reality humectants like hyaluronic acid work far more effectively when applied to damp skin and then sealed in properly with a moisturiser straight afterwards. That combination is what actually helps hold water in the skin for longer, rather than giving a short-lived plumping effect that disappears within an hour. With that said, if you feel like topical products just aren’t giving you lasting results, my ultimate recommendation would be this device. It works using a combination of microcurrent and nanocurrent technology, which essentially delivers very low-level electrical currents into the skin. Microcurrent helps stimulate the underlying facial muscles, while nanocurrent works at a cellular level to support skin function and overall tissue health. The result is a more lifted, toned, and—importantly—plump-looking complexion over time. It’s not an instant filler-style effect, but with consistent use, it can genuinely improve the skin’s ability to look firmer and more hydrated for longer periods, rather than relying on short-lived surface hydration alone.

A sensitive skin cleanser for no makeup days when I don't want or need a double cleanse (under £15).
This is one of those products that does exactly what it says on the <s>tin</s> tube, no more no less, and that’s the beauty of it. On no-makeup days, when you don’t necessarily need a full double cleanse, it’s a great single-step option that removes SPF, light oil, and daily buildup without stripping. The creamy balm-to-oil texture melts into the skin really easily and rinses off without leaving any residue, which is key if you want something simple but still effective. It leaves skin feeling soft and comfortable rather than tight, so I frequently recommend it to clients with sensitivity.

A facial sunscreen that won’t stain my clothes (any budget).
One of the biggest frustrations with sunscreen is transfer—especially around the neckline and shoulders in summer. This is one of the best I’ve found for avoiding that issue. It has a very lightweight, gel-like texture that sinks into the skin quickly and dries down completely without leaving any heavy residue behind. Because it’s so thin and water-based, it’s far less likely to cling to fabrics or leave those tell-tale white or oily marks on clothing. It also layers well under makeup doesn’t pill, and gives great glow.

I really need something for stubborn chest acne, cleansers don’t seem to do anything (any budget).
Chest acne can be particularly stubborn because it’s often driven by a combination of sweat, friction, and occasionally produce buildup. I tend to approach it from two angles. The first is gentle chemical exfoliation—this body wash is perfect for this. Mandelic acid is a gentle AHA that helps dissolve dead skin cells and reduce congestion without being overly harsh or drying, which is important for body skin that’s already prone to irritation. Alongside this, I also recommend using this spray, which uses hypochlorous acid to help reduce bacteria and calm inflammation on the skin’s surface. It’s especially good if sweat and exercise are playing a role. Together, they help keep pores clearer while also supporting the skin barrier, which is key for preventing recurring breakouts.

A deodorant that actually holds up in heat without irritation (under £20).
I tested a lot of deodorants for a Who What Wear article last year, and the one that really stood out for me was this one. It was one of the few formulas that actually performed well in heat and without irritating my underarm area. The silky gel texture feels very refreshing and absorbs quickly. Plus, it doesn’t leave that sticky or chalky feeling you get with some natural deodorants, and it holds up surprisingly well through long, warm days.

A scalp treatment for itchiness and sweat buildup in summer (under £30).
I actually find my scalp suffers more in the winter, but I’ve tried my fair share of scalp scrubs and serums. This one is a really good option for dealing with scalp congestion, especially in summer when sweat and product buildup can start to make the scalp feel itchy or uncomfortable. It works by gently exfoliating the scalp using a combination of physical and chemical exfoliants, helping to lift away dead skin cells, oil, and residue that can clog follicles or contribute to irritation. The key benefit is that it leaves the scalp feeling properly clean and balanced without over-drying it, which is important if you're washing your hair more frequently in hot weather.

Looking for something in particular? This week we have seasonal-appropriate requests for holiday skin and summer scents as well as serums for sensitive skin and my favourite brown mascara. Let’s shop!

A retinoid for sensitive perioral dermatitis-prone skin (no budget).

This is one where I'd add a slight caveat before recommending anything: if your perioral dermatitis is currently active, I'd focus on getting that under control and identifying your triggers before introducing a retinoid. Retinoids can be incredibly beneficial, but they can also be irritating if the skin barrier is already compromised. Once your PD is stable, however, this serum is one of the gentlest places to start. It’s specifically designed to deliver the benefits of vitamin A while minimising irritation, and the formula contains lots of supportive ingredients that help cushion the skin. I like it because it feels like a genuinely well-formulated retinoid rather than one that's simply trying to be as strong as possible. If you're sensitive, consistency almost always beats strength, and this is one of the few retinoids I'd feel comfortable recommending to someone who knows their skin can be reactive.

A bright and fresh summer perfume for my upcoming holidays, something new and a bit different (under £100).

I've recently been working on a fragrance article for Who What Wear, which has meant I've spent the last few weeks testing a huge number of summer launches, and three have really stood out. This is probably the most sunshine-in-a-bottle of the bunch—bright citrus, soft florals, and a warmth that feels both uplifting and comforting at the same time. I also really rate this new Diptyque scent, which combines orange blossom, bitter orange, and aromatic notes in a way that feels sparkling and sophisticated rather than obviously citrusy. Then there's the latest seasonal exclusive from Ffern, which feels like stepping into a wild flower garden on a warm day—fresh, citrusy, and with hints of rose and neroli. All three feel distinctly summery, but none of them fall into the predictable fruity-cocktail territory that so many holiday fragrances do.

Essentials for a girl who has just moved to UAE in the height of summer (no budget).

If you’ve just moved to the UAE in summer, your most important beauty product isn’t going to be a serum or moisturiser—it’s going to be something that helps you actually reapply SPF throughout the day. That’s why I’d pick this pocket-sized SPF spray. The miniature format makes it ideal for keeping in your bag, and because it’s a fine mist, it can be applied over makeup without disrupting it. In intense heat and UV exposure, it’s the top-ups that make the difference, and this removes most of the excuses not to do them.

A brown mascara that doesn’t smudge under eyes, preferably not waterproof (under £30).

I wrote an article about brown mascaras for Who What Wear last year, and despite trying countless others since, this one remains my favourite. Brown mascara can be surprisingly difficult to get right—many formulas either don’t show up enough or smudge more readily than their black counterparts. This one manages to deliver dramatic volume and definition while still looking softer than black mascara. The shade itself is rich enough to make an impact, but the formula is what really wins me over. It holds up brilliantly throughout the day without migrating under the eyes, and it does all of that without even needing to be waterproof.

A body lotion that will actually make a difference to very dry skin, but still smells good and feels luxe (under £40).

This body cream is one of those products that truly surprised me. It's owned by the same parent company behind brands like NIOD and The Ordinary, so there's some serious skincare expertise behind the formula, and it shows. The texture is rich enough to make a noticeable difference to very dry skin, but it absorbs beautifully and never feels sticky or heavy. Then there's the scent, which is a huge part of its appeal. It reminds me so much of Byredo Gypsy Water—that same airy mix of woods, freshness, and softness that smells expensive without being overpowering. It's the kind of body cream that feels like both skincare and a fragrance experience in one.

An everyday skin tint, something glowy and easy to smooth (no budget).

I was not expecting to love this skin tint as much as I do, but I am completely obsessed with it at the moment. It has that elusive “your skin but better” quality where it evens everything out without looking like obvious makeup. The texture is lightweight, blends effortlessly with brush or fingers, and leaves behind a healthy glow that never tips into greasy territory. What really impressed me is how comfortable it feels on the skin—you genuinely forget you’re wearing it.

A moisturiser for skin that can get dry but has oiliness and whiteheads on forehead (no budget).

This combination is incredibly common and often comes down to imbalance rather than needing less moisture. When skin is producing oil but still feeling dry, the answer is usually to focus on lightweight layers of hydration rather than rich creams. This new moisturiser does this brilliantly. Despite the name, it’s surprisingly hydrating and uses water-based hydration to replenish the skin without leaving behind excess richness that can contribute to congestion (or too much glow, which may not appeal if you’re tackling shine). The result is skin that feels comfortable and balanced, while the forehead is less likely to become oily throughout the day.

An antioxidant for sensitive skin (no budget).

Antioxidants are one of the best additions you can make to a skincare routine, but they can be surprisingly tricky if your skin is sensitive. That’s because many antioxidant serums rely on high-strength vitamin C, which can sometimes cause stinging, redness, or irritation—particularly if your skin barrier is already compromised. This is why I think it’s so important to look at the bigger picture. If your skin is dehydrated or your barrier isn’t functioning optimally, even well-formulated active products can feel more irritating than they should. Making sure you’re properly hydrating the skin and supporting the barrier will often improve tolerance to actives across the board. For the antioxidant itself, I’d suggest this one. I’ve recommended it to countless sensitive-skinned clients and I’ve been consistently impressed by how well they get on with it. Rather than chasing maximum strength at the expense of comfort, the formula focuses on delivering broad antioxidant protection in a way that feels calm and supportive on the skin. It layers beautifully into a morning routine, helps defend against environmental damage, and leaves skin looking brighter and healthier over time without the irritation that can sometimes come with more aggressive formulas.

A product to help me go makeup free on holiday but still have a glow (under £30).

I’ve already set this tinted milky toner aside for an upcoming holiday because it’s exactly the sort of product I want when I can’t be bothered with a full face of makeup. If you used to be someone who mixed a bit of illuminator into your moisturiser, serum, or skin tint, you’ll understand the appeal immediately. It gives skin that healthy, light-catching glow without looking glittery or obviously highlighted, and because it’s skincare-first in texture, it feels incredibly natural on bare skin. It’s currently out of stock almost everywhere, which probably tells you everything you need to know.

An eye cream to help with fine lines (under £30).

This eye cream uses a well-researched (and most importantly, proven) peptide technology to help improve skin quality over time, while also providing the immediate hydration that helps soften the appearance of fine lines. That’s really the sweet spot with eye creams—you want something that makes the area look better now while also supporting longer-term improvements. I do think there are better ones if you spend a bit more, but for the price, this is one of the strongest options I’ve tried.

Looking for something in particular? Side note: does anyone remember the website that would share the contents of a different person’s bag each week, and you could request a free sample of one of the products? It was short-lived, but genius. I still think the fascination endures—after all, isn’t there something inherently fascinating about seeing what’s inside other people’s handbags and makeup bags?

My current makeup routine looks quite different from the ones I was sharing a decade ago—when fuller coverage was the norm, I had a face of acne to conceal, and working on a beauty counter meant full glam was officially part of the uniform. Gone are the days of primers, colour correctors, multiple concealers, contour palettes, and spending half an hour blending everything into submission before leaving the house. These days, my approach to makeup is much more minimal. I’m very much a creature of habit and tend to keep most elements of my routine the same for months at a time. The exception is eye and lip products, which are where I tend to have a little more fun and experiment with new launches, colours, and formulas.
