There are few places where you can experience so many different worlds within a single trip. Morocco is one of the few places where Africa, Europe, and the Middle East all meet. You can feel these influences everywhere, from the architecture and food to the languages, textiles, and daily life.

Morocco’s unique identity has been shaped by layers of history, from the Berber communities who have lived there for thousands of years, to the arrival and spread of Islam, the trans-Saharan trade routes that connected sub-Saharan Africa to North Africa and beyond, and centuries of Andalusian influence.

These layers of history are reflected in its distinctive culture, architecture, cuisine, and craftsmanship. One day you are wandering through centuries-old medinas, the next you are riding a camel across the Sahara, sipping mint tea in a blue mountain town, or watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

This itinerary covers exactly how I spent 10 days exploring Morocco. Including some of my highlights of where I stayed, what I ate, and the experiences I think are worth adding to your trip (and a few you can probably skip).

Barcelona is a wonderful city, but sometimes the summer heat is just too much and a dip in the ocean is exactly what you need. If you are craving a calmer and frankly cleaner beach than Barcelona’s city beach, I couldn’t recommend a day trip to Costa Brava more. It’s one of the easiest ways to escape the city heat, spend a day swimming in gorgeous blue water, and see a completely different side of Catalonia.

And this is how I did it!

First things first, a coffee at La Papa in Barcelona to start the day off right! They have delicious cold brew and fabulous pastries.

From there we made our way to Sixt on Rambla de Catalunya near our hotel, where we booked a car the day before. We paid about $100 and were able to pay onsite when we picked up the car. Picking up the car was surprisingly quick and easy and took about 15 minutes. We did have a slight hiccup getting out of the garage with the gate not opening, but got help quickly and were on our way.

Then it was about an hour drive north of the city. There was some traffic getting out of the city, but once you’re out it’s just a straight shot on the highway.

• TAE Hot Take: Make sure you book an automatic car if you are not comfortable driving a manual. Manual cars are much more common in Europe.

Our first stop had to be the grocery store to get everything we needed for the perfect beach sandwich. We stopped in the town of Palamós at Mercadona. The selection was a little more limited than what we're used to in the U.S., but they were slicing jamon iberico on sight which was pretty exciting. We grabbed bread, cheese, jamon iberico, avocado, chips, fruit, and water and got back on the road.

We drove about 20 minutes to Cala Estreta. The last 5-10 minutes of the drive were on a dirt road. There is no “parking lot” but more a dirt area for you to park in. We were the only ones with a car. There were two bikes, and I assume the other people who were at the beach were staying nearby.

We grabbed our towels and lunch items and walked about 5 minutes down to the beach. (There’s a sign that shows you exactly where to go.) The surrounding area was so interesting, it was more peaceful pine forest rather than beachy hillside. It felt very different from what I was expecting. Then, almost out of nowhere, the trees opened up and revealed the gorgeous sparkling Mediterranean.

We laid out our towels, covered ourselves in sunscreen, and immediately jumped in the water.

The water was so clear that with our goggles we were able to spot schools of fish weaving through the rocks and even an octopus.

The beach was so peaceful. There were other people there enjoying the water, but it never felt crowded. It was the perfect place to swim, read, eat lunch, and simply relax.

• TAE Hot Take: Bring a beach umbrella if you can. The natural shade here is very limited and the Mediterranean sun is no joke.

• TAE Hot Take: Bring two beach towels per person. One that you will lay in the sand that will get dirty and the other as a towel for drying off after a swim or to roll up and use as a pillow.

• TAE Hot Take: Costa Brava’s beaches are mostly little pebbles rather than soft sand. Pack water shoes or flip-flops to wear.

We spent most of the day at Cala Estreta. About an hour before sunset, we got back in the car and drove to Tamariu for a pre-dinner sangria and sunset. I noticed this beach was much busier. The waterfront was lined with restaurants and cafes, making it livelier. And of course, because the beach was easily accessible with no hike and a parking lot nearby, it automatically made it busier.

Although you don’t actually get to watch the sun disappear into the ocean from Costa Brava’s east coast, the colors that filled the sky afterwards were absolutely beautiful.

Then per my sister’s recommendation, we drove about 20 minutes inland to a town called Girona for the best seafood paella she had ever had. The restaurant was a tiny spot called Octopus. Nothing fancy, just fresh seafood displayed from what was caught that day and a room full of locals.

We ended up ordering the octopus paella (I know a little sad since we did see one swimming earlier in the day), but I will say it was the best octopus paella I have ever had! Simple, fresh, and so delicious.

After dinner we drove back to Barcelona where we stopped along the way to fill up the tank, which cost about $20. Returning the car couldn’t have been easier. They instructed us to go back to the garage where we picked up the car, park anywhere, and drop the keys off in a return box. We made it back to the hotel around 12:30 am.

It was definitely a full day, but I’m so happy we were able to get out of the city and experience a quieter side of Catalonia. Between the turquoise water, beach picnic, sunset sangria, and unforgettable paella, it ended up being one of my favorite days of the trip.

Everyone loves taking a trip. Most people hate planning one.

You open a few tabs. Save a couple of restaurants. Maybe write down a couple recommendations from friends.

For some reason, planning a trip has a way of going from something exciting to something completely overwhelming. And it does not have to be that way.

Planning a trip shouldn’t feel like a burden. The goal isn’t to build a minute-by-minute itinerary, it’s to create a loose outline that makes you excited.

So here’s how to approach planning a trip in a way that makes it feel easy, organized, and fun.

1. Start with a destination

What kind of trip do you want to go on? Somewhere warm or cold? Beach or mountains? How about somewhere where your phone magically becomes less interesting?

The best trips usually start with a feeling.

Once you know the vibe you’re craving, the destination becomes much easier to pick.

2. Choose a neighborhood

Once you’ve picked a destination, zoom in on the different neighborhoods.

Look for areas that feel:

• Close enough to everything, but not directly in the chaos

• Local, but still welcoming to visitors

• Walkable, charming, and calm

I like to start my research on Google and then see what people recommend on Substack. I research what’s in the neighborhood: good restaurants, coffee shops, or little boutiques.

If I can picture myself becoming a regular at a coffee shop in the neighborhood then it’s usually a good sign.

3. Figure out how you’ll get around

Once you’ve picked your neighborhood, get a general understanding of how you’ll be getting around.

Will you mostly:

• Walk

• Use public transportation

• Hire private drivers

• Take Uber/Grab or other rideshare apps

You don’t need a full transportation plan, just enough to know how you’ll be getting around.

4. Pick your hotel

This is where people tend to spiral. And I’m guilty of it too.

It is so easy to find one hotel you like and immediately think, “what if there is something better?” And then somehow you’ve spent the past four hours comparing room photos.

Give yourself a time limit to search for hotels, 30 minutes is plenty. I like to see what people recommend on Substack and on Iescape.com for a more curated list and then I move to searching on:

• Booking.com

• Hostelworld

• Airbnb

I always make sure to use the filters and add wifi and aircon. Narrow it down to three places that you really like and choose from there.

5. Book a walking tour on your first day

This is one of my favorite travel habits.

Whenever I arrive somewhere new, the first thing I do is book a walking tour. It’s the best way to understand the layout of the city, get into the local rhythm, and get any insider tips from someone who lives there.

6. Plan what activities you want to do

You do not need to see everything. In fact, I would say don’t see everything! Start with activities that make you the most excited and go from there. If something feels like an obligation, skip it.

Build your days by planning one activity per day and go from there.

The best memories are usually the unplanned ones anyway. The in-between moments. Make sure to leave time for some of those moments. Get lost down charming side streets or stumble across a new restaurant. It’s the best part!

• List out times and prices of everything so you can see it all in front of you at once. It is much easier than constantly switching between tabs on the computer.

What was once one of Southeast Asia’s most important trading ports is now a place where old world charm meets everyday bustle. Tailor shops buzz with activity, scooters hum past centuries-old buildings, and the scent of fresh banh mi and Vietnamese coffee drifts through the air.

Hoi An is colorful, historic, a little chaotic, and completely captivating.

History

The town of Hoi An feels frozen in time. Faded yellow facades soften by centuries of sun. Silk lanterns strung across narrow pathways. Quiet courtyards that haven’t changed for generations.

This tiny town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once one of Southeast Asia’s most important trading ports.

Between the 15th and 19th centuries, merchants from Japan, China, and Europe arrived by boat along the Thu Bon River, which runs directly through Hoi An. Its location was a goldmine, opening directly to the South China Sea, one of the busiest maritime trade routes in the world. Ships could come in safely, load valuable goods like silk, spices, and sugar, and continue on to Japan, China, or Europe. It was efficient, strategic, and extremely profitable.

Centuries of global trade left more than just money behind. It left influence. And that cultural mix is still everywhere today. In the ornate Chinese assembly halls, the wooden merchant houses, and the well-known Japanese Covered Bridge.

When the river began to silt up in the 1800s, trade moved elsewhere. Hoi An was left behind and thankfully, largely untouched. While other cities modernized, this one preserved its weathered shopfronts, clay-tiled roofs, and French-influenced shutters.

And yes, the city has a reputation of being touristy, but that shouldn’t deter you from visiting. The lanterns are magical. The food is incredible. And just a few streets away from the main riverfront the crowds fade and the quiet beauty of the town takes your breath away.

Where to Eat

• Roving Chill House - Set in rice fields just outside of town, this is where to go to grab a coffee and slow down. It’s the perfect place to sit and read a book, journal, or simply do nothing. Try one of Vietnam’s signature coffees: salt coffee (my personal favorite), coconut coffee, or egg coffee.

• Rosies Cafe - Best for a Western-style brunch. Tucked away on one of the cutest side streets, it’s a cozy little escape from the Old Town buzz.

After a year of travel, I needed some time to regroup. To hug family and friends I hadn’t seen in what felt like forever. To eat at the restaurants I missed while away. And honestly, to make more money so I could head back out to travel again.

I had gone to college in NYC and most of my friends still lived there. So it felt natural that I would land back in the city. I craved the energy, the familiarity, the late-night dinners, and the long walks along the water.

But paying full rent in NYC when I was in-between chapters? It just didn’t make sense.

Turns out, I rarely visited it.

I quickly learned that all you need to live well in NYC are a few good staple outfits and one fabulous coat.

I also joined a gym with multiple locations around the city. No matter which neighborhood I was staying in, I had one consistent place to go. That small thread of stability helped make everything else feel grounded.

What I didn’t expect was how much clarity this adventure would bring me. By spending time in different neighborhoods, I started to think about where I wanted to end up. Which streets I loved at night. Which cafes felt like “mine.” Where I could picture myself signing a lease again.

When I eventually did move back, I knew exactly where I wanted to live. (And that’s where I live now!)

And then there were the dogs.

Caring for them gave structure to my mornings and something to look forward to at night. Somewhere between the snowy Central Park walks and couch cuddles I had a realization…

I was fully capable of having my own dog in New York.

I had always thought that it felt too impractical, too chaotic. But living this way proved to me that not only could I do it, but that I would love it too!

Fast forward to where I am now, living with my dumped Bali street dog in my dream apartment!

Living rent-free in NYC wasn’t just about saving money. (Although yes, that was a large part of it) It was about figuring out what was next for me.

These are the markets that I still think about long after I’ve gone home. These are my five favorites in the world.

1. Arezzo Antique Fair | Arezzo, Italy

This might just be my favorite antique market in the world. Think delicate china dishes stacked just so, gold antique frames catching the Tuscan sunlight, and beautifully blown Murano glass in shades of soft pinks, deep blues, and emerald greens.

It might just be that I am biased towards all things old and Italian (how could you not be?!), but this market feels special in a way that’s hard to explain. It’s elegant without being precious and grand without being too overwhelming. It invites you to take a closer look and linger a little longer than you had planned on.

Set in Piazza Grande, the market unfolds across the medieval square, surrounded by centuries-old stone palazzi, worn staircases, and arches that frame the square like a movie set. It’s hard to imagine a more serene backdrop for the market.

History:

Piazza Grande was once the heart of a bustling fruit and vegetable market. After the bombings from WWII, the square was largely abandoned. The Arezzo Antique Fair was launched in 1968 to bring life back into the heart of the city. Today, it’s a monthly ritual and a cornerstone of Arezzo’s cultural identity drawing in collectors, dealers, and travelers from all around the world.

When:

• The first Sunday of every month and the preceding Saturday.

2. La Lagunilla Market | Mexico City, Mexico

La Lagunilla Market is chaotic, stylish, historical, and endlessly surprising. You’ll find anything and everything here. One street overflows with antique furniture, another is lined with vintage clothing, and the next is filled with ceramics that are centuries old.

This market is equal parts design heaven and a neighborhood staple and that’s exactly why it works. It’s a place where design lovers, collectors, and locals all move through the same narrow streets. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a few stall owners’ dogs holding down the fort.

History:

La Lagunilla means “little lake” which comes from the ancient waterways that once connected this area to Lake Texcoco during the Aztec period. Long before streets existed, it served as a place for canoes to transport goods to the nearby Tlatelolco market (one of the most important trading centers in Mesoamerica).

During the Spanish conquest the lakes were drained, but the name remained. By the 16th and 17th centuries, La Lagunilla had become a working class neighborhood and trading center where merchants would sell everything from produce to fabric to everyday goods.

By the mid-20th century the market had become a permanent trading center and eventually expanded so much that it spilled into the surrounding streets and became the iconic Sunday market it is today.

• Bring cash, there is an atm in the grocery store nearby, but learn from my mistake and and bring cash because that line is LONG

• Start early and have patience, there is so much and it can be overwhelming

• Talk to vendors, most have interesting stories about the pieces they are selling

• What I like to look for: leather jackets, straw baskets, antique Sacred Heart wall decor, old pottery

3. Chatuchak Market | Bangkok, Thailand

The Chatuchak Market is overwhelming in the most exhilarating way. It’s a maze of color, heat, music, and movement. It’s one of the largest outdoor markets in the world, holding 15,000 stalls. You’ll find just about anything here from clothing and antiques to plants, home goods, street food, and, sadly, even animals.

The scent of street food lingering in the air as you shop, from sizzling skewers to sweet coconut ice cream. You might turn down one aisle looking for something specific and emerge with something completely unexpected.

History:

The Chatuchak Market was started in 1942 to boost local trade and support the economy. After decades of relocation, it settled permanently in its current location in 1982. Today, more than 200,000 people visit every weekend, making it one of the largest and most chaotic markets in the world.

When:

Where:

• Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok

• Bargaining is expected

• Bring a fan and water

• If you see something you like buy it because there is a 99% chance you won’t be able to retrace your steps to find it

• Prepare yourself for a BIG market and getting lost is part of the fun!

• What I like to look for: vintage t-shirts, bracelets, local artist prints, and of course coconut ice cream

4. Fiera da Ladra | Lisbon, Portugal

This is Lisbon’s most well-known flea market. It’s where you go to rummage. Old azulejo tiles, brass hardware, faded postcards, and handmade lace skirts share space with fresh produce and booths by local artists selling jewelry, prints, and more.

It’s less polished than an antique fair and has more of a flea market feel. The market stretches across narrow streets and small squares, inviting you to wander without a plan and see what catches your eye.

History:

Fiera da Ladra dates back to the 13th century making it one of the oldest flea markets in Europe. The name loosely translates to “thieves market” because in the early days it was used to sell secondhand and reclaimed goods.

Over centuries, the market moved locations multiple times before settling at its current location, where it’s been held since the late 1800s.

When:

• Tuesdays & Saturdays

• 9am - 6pm

Where:

• Campo de Santa Clara, 1100-472 Lisboa, Portugal

• Go early for the best pickings

• What I like to look for: handmade white lace skirts, local artist prints and ceramics, antique china dishes

5. Anza Souk | Anza, Morocco

Anza Souk is a deeply local market, a mix of farmers’ stalls, vintage finds, and secondhand clothing.

Set between surf towns, the market has no curation, no polish, just the real rhythm of daily life. It’s raw and unfiltered, and that’s exactly why it feels special. Grab fresh bananas, stock up on incredible spices, and leave with unexpected treasures you didn’t know you needed.

History:

Anza has long been a fishing town and the souk grew organically as a place for locals to trade. Today it’s a space where both locals and travelers browse, shop, and discover.

When:

• Wednesday

• Starting at 8am

Where:

• Souk de Mercredi Anza Hebdomadaire

TAE Hot Take:

• Cash only market

• People start their days early here, so the earlier you go the better

• If you have more exploring in you drive 10 minutes south to Souk el Had a larger market in Agadir

• What I like to look for: secondhand clothing, antique knick-knacks, spices

These markets are about experiencing.

You listen. You wander. You leave with dust on your shoes and something special tucked under your arm. A small reminder of a place, feeling, and moment you’ll always carry with you.

That’s the magic. And that’s why these markets stay with you long after the trip ends.

Mosaics have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Special handmade pieces that brighten every room. A whimsical pastel mirror in my bedroom, a sunlit mosaic table where we shared family meals, one-of-a-kind picture frames scattered throughout the house.

There was comfort in them. In knowing my Nana made them. In knowing creativity could live inside everyday things.

When I was ten, Nana taught me how to make my very own mosaic. I chose an old clock from the ever famous broken-dishes closet. Imagine a tiny walk-in closet with shelves wrapping around the walls. Each shelf stacked high with dishes. Broken plates, chipped teacups, treasures waiting to be transformed. The possibilities felt endless.

Nana guided me through the process and together we dreamt up a design. A flower as the centerpiece surrounded by deep purple vines and chartreuse accents, Nana’s signature colors. There was no right combination, only what felt right.

She showed me how to break the dishes with tile cutters. We sat at the table overlooking the backyard and not so carefully pieced each broken dish onto the clock. She taught me it didn’t have to be exact. That it could be playful. To follow your creative instinct and let that lead the way.

Sometimes I got bored. Sometimes she quietly took over. When we were done gluing the broken dishes on, we grouted the final piece together, Nana showing me how. We cleaned it up and admired it like it was a masterpiece. We spent hours at the backtable, talking, laughing, enjoying scoops of Bonnie Brae ice cream while we created something beautiful side by side.

Nana helped me to realize how much I loved creating with my hands. The tactile feeling. The vibrant colors. The endless creativity.

But as I got older, it became harder to make space for the creative things I loved. Then COVID slowed everything down and I knew it was time to return to mosaics.

I opened that closet for the first time in years. Everything was untouched, exactly as I had left it, waiting for me. So I dove in.

I started small with mini picture frames, unsure if the spark would still be there. I wanted to start with something manageable, something I knew I could finish. Before I knew it, I’d made dozens. Creativity pulled me back in. One piece led to another. That’s when I realized it was time to go bigger.

So I did. I made vases, mirrors, tables, anything you could mosaic, I was on it.

Mosaics became my way back to play. To color. To create without rules or pressure. I let my intuition guide me.

So now I create, letting inspiration lead the way, just like Nana taught me.

While traveling through Bali, I fell in love with a lot of things: the lush, wild greenery that swallows you whole, the temples wrapped in incense, the soft quiet mornings, and the warmth of strangers who quickly become friends. But the place that rooted itself deepest in my heart wasn’t on any travel or must see list. It was an animal shelter tucked away on the island called BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association).

BAWA’s mission is simple but powerful, put compassion into action and create long-term, sustainable change for Bali’s animals. To rescue, heal, educate, protect, and keep fighting for animals who can’t fight for themselves.

In late spring of 2024, toward the end of my first year-long journey, I started volunteering at the shelter. What started as a way to give back during my travels and give routine to my days quickly became so much more. It became the center of my days. I fell in love with the dogs. I loved the chaos of mornings. The barking, the feedings, the excited paws scratching at the gates, their little faces lighting up when it was finally time for their walk. I also loved the slow moments. Leisurely walks through winding paths, sitting and watching the farmers in the rice fields, feeling a warm little body curl up into my lap.

When I left Bali that year, I knew, deep in my chest in that heavy, homesick way that I would be back. And in summer of 2025, I walked through those gates again as if no time had passed.

And that’s where Bubba comes in.

Bubba and her sister, Hubba, were dumped at the shelter as tiny puppies, just a few weeks old. They were small, shaky, and unsure of the world. But from the moment I saw them, my heart ached for them. I would go straight to them every morning. I walked them, held them, checked on them a hundred times a day. I just couldn’t help it!

I didn’t plan to foster them. It just… happened. They chose me as much as I chose them. And I got the honor to choose their names: Hubba and Bubba, the tiniest duo with the biggest personalities.

Hubba thrived quickly, turning into a confident, bouncy little dog. But Bubba struggled. Her legs were bowed from a severe calcium deficiency. She wobbled constantly, stumbling and struggling to keep up. Sometimes she’d fall, look up at me, and try again with this tiny burst of determination. It broke me a little every time.

She needed casts on both legs and someone to give her the extra time, love, and patience.

So I did.

I watched her go from shaky and fragile to stronger, surer, and braver. Thanks to BAWA’s incredible vets, Bubba healed. Her bones gained strength. Her legs straightened. Her walk steadied.

Somewhere between the vet visits, late night clean ups, and long days at the shelter, Bubba became my dog.

What I didn’t know then and what I know a little too well now is how complicated it is to bring a dog from Bali to the U.S. There are strict regulations, medical clearances, transport logistics, and more costs than I ever anticipated. But I’m committed to bringing Bubba to her forever home with me in Brooklyn.

I recently launched a GoFundMe to help cover her vet bills, testing, and everything it takes to get her to the U.S. Any extra funds will go straight back to BAWA, the place that saved her, and the place that continues saving so many others.

When I held my Austrian passport for the first time, I felt something I can’t quite describe, not just the cool texture of the document in my hand, but a quiet warmth, as though many hands before me were passing it down.

This is the story of my ancestors. A story of uprooting and resilience, hope and survival. How they survived WWII. The journey begins back in 1936 Vienna.

Great-Grandparents – Ernst and Hilde’s Story:

My great-grandfather, Ernst and great-grandmother, Hilde were living in Vienna as a young married couple. Ernst worked as a produce import/export vendor. Picture crates of fresh fruit, long days at the market, and the pulse of city life. Life was good, but as time went on there was a growing undertone of tension. In 1938, life dramatically shifted when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. The streets that Ernst and Hilde had once walked now carried whispers of danger. They knew they had to get out.

They packed their lives and left for Milan in 1938, clinging to the hope of safety. But safety proved fragile. And in April 1939, from Naples they boarded the Saturnia Vulcania and sailed to America. In May 1939 they reached Akron, Ohio in hopes of finding refuge.

They were only able to make this journey due to the kindness of a mystery sponsor, someone who believed in them. To this day, that sponsor is still unknown, and saying we’re grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Ernst and Hilde spent a couple years in Akron, doing what they knew best and opened a grocery store, living a quiet life. Yet, there was always something missing. They missed home and the snowy peaks of the Alps. And so, in 1943 they moved to Denver, Colorado where the Rocky Mountains, with their snow-capped peaks, reminded them of home.

Imagine starting over: new people, a different language, unfamiliar streets, when what you want most is to be back in your city. But adaptation was necessary. And so Ernst swapped produce crates for ledger books, becoming an accountant. Hilde stood behind grocery counters day after day. The memory of home in Vienna always lingered. The feeling of being an outsider never fully left. The longing was always there.

Great-Great-Grandmother – Katerina’s (Hilde’s Mother) Story:

Hilde’s mother, Katerina Reif, had lived in Vienna her whole life. In 1938 she made her way to Milan, to be with her daughter Hilde and son-in-law Ernst. There she took a job as a cook in a Jewish old-age home, one of the only jobs she could get, given her previous work as a yenta (matchmaker).

One day, while working, she heard a rumor: the Nazis would be coming the next day. She went into hiding and thank goodness she did. Many of the residents who stayed behind did not survive.

During that time, Katerina obtained a visa from the Chinese Consulate in Milan with a stamp by Lai Sai Lo and signed by Dr. Ho on February 10, 1939. Dr. Ho was secretly issuing visas without authorization and acting against official policy to help Jews escape. (His name is recognized in the Yad Vashem museum honoring his efforts.)

It is unknown why she did not use the Chinese Consulate stamp to leave Italy immediately, maybe it was too dangerous to get to the border. We do know that she spent the duration of the war in hiding in Italy, most of that time hiding in a hayloft with Nazi soldiers below.

Finally in 1946 she arrived in the United States where she joined Ernst and Hilde in Denver. I imagine her finally arriving to Denver, stepping into another new life, so much relief, sorrow, exhaustion, and the hope of finally being safe.

Cousins of My Great-Grandmother Hilde - Walter & Hertha’s Story:

Hilde’s cousin, Walter and wife Hertha’s story is one of quick wit, luck, and resilience. Thankfully all well documented from a 1997 interview that captured their journey in their own words.

Walter began his career in movie distribution in Berlin and Vienna in 1929. For seven years he worked in the film world. By 1936, he said, they already knew they “would probably need to leave the country with what we could take on our backs.”

In 1938 they abandoned their flat in Vienna along with it a collection of art and rare books. In the end they only left with two duffels.

They went straight to the British Consulate where hundreds of Jews stood in line hoping to leave. The long lines posed a problem. Walter, being ever resourceful, walked to the front of the line and told the guard he had an appointment with a Mr. Sanders, a name he invented on the spot. And luckily, it worked. They were let through.

Then there was a second hurdle: the British government was not issuing visas for Jews from Austria or Germany to go to Britain or Australia. However, Walter remembered a friend from Vienna who worked for Paramount Pictures and had been transferred to Trinidad. That friend mentioned a loophole, Trinidad had been left off the list of restricted destinations. To be sure, Walter asked a British Consulate worker whether a visa was required to enter Trinidad. The official said no. Thinking ahead, Walter asked the officer to write that and stamp the document, which he did. It was that single act of foresight that saved them. When they arrived in Trinidad, officials insisted they needed a visa. Hertha pulled out the stamped document, and the couple was allowed to enter.

In Trinidad, Walter worked for theater owners and eventually started a film advertising company. Unfortunately after 2 years in 1940 with the onset of WWII, an edict was put into place that forbade refugees from working. Walter and Hertha were declared “enemy aliens” and sent to an internment camp. After eight long months, they secured entry visas for the United States.

Once they finally arrived in NYC they bought a car for $200 and drove across the country to California. As Walter put it, “we decided that if we were going to be poor, we’d do it where the weather is nice.” And I think that was pretty smart thinking.

Eventually Hertha found a factory job and Walter was hired as a publicist in the foreign press department at Warner Bros., working on pro-American propaganda distributed in Latin America. (His Spanish, learned in Trinidad, got him the job).

Once the war ended, Walter was finally permitted to return to Vienna. On a visit back he found their old home bombed. Their collection of art and books, gone. Or so he thought. Miraculously, a close friend had saved some of their books and returned them to him.

And Now Me…

Fast forward to me, sitting with my mom surrounded by stacks of documents: passports, marriage licenses, visas. Piecing together our family history so we could reclaim citizenship under Section 58c of the Austrian Citizenship Act, the law allowing descendants of those persecuted by the Nazi regime to acquire Austrian citizenship by declaration.

When I finally visited Vienna, I was able to walk the same cobblestone streets my ancestors once walked. I imagined what the market stalls would have looked like as Ernst loaded his crates of produce. I stood in the location where Ernst and Hilde once lived and pictured a young married couple sitting down for dinner together. And holding my Austrian passport, it wasn’t just about travel privileges or EU access. It was an acknowledgment. A recognition. A return of something that had been taken.

And so if you’re reading this and wondering if you might be eligible, talk to your family, sift through the records, hunt down the visas, manifests, records of persecution or flight. The law is there. The path is there. And the memory is there.

Because citizenship isn’t just a passport.

It’s a story. A memory. A legacy.

A home.

Is it a job title? A paycheck? Or something else entirely?

In America, we often equate worth with productivity. Salaries, promotions, and Linkedin updates become our measuring stick.

It’s become a built in habit that the first question we ask is, What do you do? We never ask, What lights you up? or What makes you happy?

Why is this? Why is purpose so often tied to work and money? And what happens when your life doesn’t fit neatly into the 9-5 box?

This obsession leaves little room for different ways of living. And that tension between what we’re told our purpose should be and what that actually feels like, is something I keep coming back to.

My Story of Trying to Chase Purpose

For most of my life, I equated purpose with achievement.

In high school, that meant running on autopilot, having every minute scheduled and every ounce of energy poured into academics and activities.

College slowed me down. For the first time, my life didn’t revolve around classes. I rediscovered joy in the small things: walks through New York City, coffee with friends, and reading solely for pleasure. I began to see that maybe purpose wasn’t just what earned me an applause, but what made me feel alive.

Then came Covid, and things shifted. Life was stripped back to the essentials. The world went quiet, routines were disrupted, and I had the space to ask myself what truly mattered. And let me tell you, it was definitely not grades or accolades. It was family, friends, my curiosity to see the world, my desire to be creative, and most of all, it was presence, learning to savor the tiny joys of being alive.

One way I reconnected with that joy was through mosaics, something I had done with my Nana as a kid. I loved the vibrant colors, bold patterns, and the simple pleasure of creating with a blank canvas. And yet, the old voices crept in: Should I be producing more? Should I make this into something bigger? I had to remind myself, over and over, that it was enough to simply enjoy the process. That purpose could live in the act itself, not in how productive or profitable it was.

Travel brought that same lesson, but this time on a bigger scale. After college, I packed my bags and set out to see the world. I wandered freely meeting people living lives far outside the neat boxes society has told us to live in, and I felt the thrill of breaking away from old definitions of success. But still, that age old question followed me… What is my purpose?

How could I feel so alive and yet still haunted by that question? Maybe it’s because deep down I was still measuring my worth against the American standard, the one that says your value comes from your work and your purpose is something you can list on a resume.

The Cultural Problem: Purpose as Productivity

This is the cultural script we’ve been handed: purpose must be productive, and productivity must be profitable.

From a young age we are told to dream in terms of careers. What do you want to be when you grow up? rarely means, What kind of life do you want to live? And from that moment, we’re trained to see purpose through the lens of output.

By adulthood, the pattern is automatic. On first dates, interviews, or even conversations with strangers the first question is always, So… what do you do? Rarely do we ask, What lights you up? or What brings you joy? It’s a quick way of sizing each other up in a system where worth is measured in salaries, titles, and Linkedin updates.

This mindset seeps into every corner of our culture. Busyness becomes a badge of honor. Exhaustion becomes proof of dedication. Even the things we once did solely for joy get swallowed up by this pressure to produce. You can’t just paint, you have to sell your artwork on Etsy. You can’t just bake, you need to start selling out of your kitchen. Somewhere along the way, joy stopped being enough.

So what happens if your life doesn’t fit neatly into this script? What if you take time off, or work a job that isn’t seen as glamorous, or prioritize presence, creativity, or care over hustle? Culturally, that’s often seen as a lack of ambition, when in reality, it might just be the truest expression of purpose.

And that’s the real problem, this obsession with purpose as productivity leaves us feeling disconnected from ourselves. It tells us that unless our lives generate profit, they don’t matter. That unless our work is prestigious or lucrative, it doesn’t “count.”

But what if the script is all wrong? What if this story we’ve been handed about work equaling worth is exactly what’s keeping us from discovering what makes life worth living?

Redefining Purpose

Here’s the possibility I keep coming back to:

Purpose isn’t a job. It’s not a paycheck, a title, or hours clocked in. Purpose isn’t external, it’s not waiting for us at the end of some career ladder.

Purpose is internal. It’s presence. It’s the way you show up in your life, the way you pay attention, the way you connect. It’s found in the moments that don’t get listed on resumes: laughing with a friend, cooking dinner for a loved one, creating something beautiful simply because it feels good.

Think about it, the moments you feel most alive rarely have anything to do with productivity. They’re when you lose track of time because you are so absorbed in joy and connection that the rest of the world just melts away. That’s purpose. Not because it earns you money, but because it reminds you that you are alive.

For me, purpose looks like a mosaic of moments: making art because it brings me joy, working jobs that keep me connected to community, traveling to expand my perspective, and caring for the people I love. It’s less about one grand “calling” and more about a rhythm of living, one that values presence over performance.

So what if purpose isn’t something we chase, but instead something we already carry? What if purpose is revealed in how we spend our days, in the small choices that add up to a life? Slowing down enough to actually taste your morning coffee, calling a friend just to hear their voice, choosing rest instead of running yourself into the ground. Maybe it’s the courage to say, this is enough, even when the world insists you should be doing more.

So maybe the question isn’t “What is my purpose?” but rather “How do I want to live?”

Because at the end of the day, I don’t want my legacy to be how many hours I clocked at a cubicle. I want it to be how deeply I lived, how present I was, and how much joy I experienced.

And maybe, just maybe, that’s enough.

There’s a certain kind of magic that flows through the air in Bali. It’s soft, unseen, yet so deeply felt. You sense it in the cool breeze that whispers through the jungle, in the swirl of incense from daily offerings, in the warm glow from the morning sun as it rises over the rice fields.

There’s a saying here, that Bali draws in those who are meant to be here. And I can’t help but believe that it’s true.

Life here moves at a different pace, one deeply rooted in community, creativity, and spirit. Tranquility isn’t something you search for, instead it finds you. Bali has a way of slowing down time, reminding you what it means to feel truly connected… to a place, to people, and most importantly to yourself.

When I set out on my year abroad, I knew I wanted more than just sightseeing. I wanted some kind of routine, a way to make my money last, and a deeper connection with the places I visited. I wanted to understand the culture, meet people, and be part of something rather than just pass through.

Through the platform, I bartended (with zero experience) at a dreamy hostel just outside of Lisbon in exchange for free accommodation and surf lessons. I worked 3 days a week either in the morning from 8-4 or in the evening from 4-11. My shifts were spent chatting with guests, reading during the slow hours, soaking up the sun, and of course making the occasional drink. During my time off I would take surf lessons, explore hidden beaches, and watch the sun melt into the ocean with new friends. I was even able to find a pottery studio nearby where I took private lessons. It was one of those rare experiences that made me feel completely alive while rooted in routine, surrounded by community, and free to explore.

I taught English in a small village in Laos where the kids were so excited to learn they would run up to us yelling “Teacher! Teacher!” It was the kind of pure joy that just fills your heart. Here I paid around $13 a day which covered accommodation and 3 daily meals. We worked 5 days a week, with mornings off where we often swam in the nearby lagoon and afternoons were spent lesson planning and teaching.

I worked reception and the bar at a hostel on a tiny island called Koh Tao in Thailand where my “office” view was of the lush green jungle and the ocean was just minutes away. Here I worked 6 days a week in 5 hour shifts in exchange for free accommodation. Free time was spent snorkeling at different beaches around the island, finding the best watermelon frozen drink, and watching the sunset turn the sky into wild colors.

Each experience helped me cut costs, meet incredible people, create community, and connect more deeply with the places I was going.

   I am a very social person. I love to chat and learn more about the people I am surrounded by. At the farmers market I love to chat with our customers. I find it so interesting to hear about other peoples stories and love connecting with others learning what makes us similar or different.

3. Apply to 5-10 hosts at a time

   • Many hosts are slow to respond so cast a wide net and follow up if needed. You can also try messaging them on Instagram or send them an email

4. Set Up an Interview with the Host

   • Mine have always been super laid back, it is just a chance to make sure it’s a good fit on both sides

Tips & Tricks

1. Start simple: To help it feel less overwhelming start by picking a region you’re excited about (Europe, Asia, etc)

2. Pick your vibe: Choose the kind of work you want to do (hostel, farm, teaching, etc).

3. Just start applying: Don’t overthink it. Send out about to 5-10 applications to start

4. Be proactive: Some hosts don’t check their Worldpackers account often, so try reaching out via email or Instagram

5. It’s a two-way street: Treat interviews like conversations, you’re also making sure it’s a good fit for you too

6. Know the commitment: Keep in mind average work is 25 hours per week (max is 32)

No other way to say it than… this was the best decision I ever made. Sure, it takes a little time to set up your profile and find the right match, but it is so incredibly worth it. I’ve met strangers who have turned into best friends (as cheesy as that sounds), saw parts of the world I never imagined seeing, and felt more alive, connected, and inspired than I ever have before. Honestly, it changed me in all the best ways. Now it is your turn!
