I loved the slow build up of how each couple’s relationship slowly starts to succumb to the inevitability of the algorithm. I really enjoyed this one! The special effects are very well done and this is a masterclass in suspense. I think this is the scariest thing I’ve seen someone successfully stage. It’s more a popcorn good time (but it is a great time). If you’re a horror fan it’s definitely worth checking out! Without giving too much away this is a two story set and it’s helpful to be able to see the whole stage at once to get the full effect. I would avoid the being too close to the stage or too far off to the sides (especially side in the mezz). I was on the far back right just off the aisle and was happy with my seat. This was a first preview but they’re already on it and I can only imagine it’ll get more dialed in as time goes on. Read more

This arena production is remarkable. I was skeptical of a World Tour yet it’s a show built on the intensity of vocals so giving it a venue designed for spectacular sound turns out to be the right choice. The cast rotates throughout the tour, but these are performers who have inhabited these roles for years, in some cases decades. The large-screen projections let you appreciate every emotional beat and, occasionally, more flying spit than a Jonathan Groff performance. Yes, Les Mis is long. And yes, this production is absolutely worth seeing. One might even say to go hear the people sing. Read more

The cutest rom-com I’ve seen in quite a while! The delightfully chaotic love polygon, paired with an all-women cast, somehow makes the unbearably straight male character feel oddly endearing. The play strikes a wonderful balance between exaggeration and restraint. Its perfectly timed twists, along with the surprisingly poetic reflections on life shared between humans and seals, give the entire production a light, rhythmic quality without ever feeling weightless or lacking substance. I never thought I’d spend a Friday afternoon in a theater crying over chickens. Three Chickens Confront Existence is a play about living and dying — about existential dread, and how we cope with the fact that we’ll never know when our end comes. The moment the lights came up, I thought I could see where this was going. The staging told me everything: chickens in a row of cages means death down the line, means food on someone’s table. Life experience says this is a tragedy. But once the three chickens started talking, I realized it was so much more than that. Like us, they build meaning out of boredom. They long for structure while living in uncertainty. A small society forms, a religion forms — and still, none of it saves them from the fear of tomorrow. It’s a simple setup that holds a lot. You smile with the chickens, cry with them, and recognize that shared feeling of being lost and needing a purpose. Read more

At first, I thought it was just another show built around a stack of buzzwords. But the production quickly proved me wrong. Within a tight 50-minute runtime, using a single set, minimal props, and only two performers, it builds an impressive amount of dramatic tension. Introducing two fully realized characters so efficiently is no easy task, yet the show establishes them with remarkable economy. It closes on a beautifully executed transition and a single, devastating line that lingers. That kind of restraint and confidence speaks great craftsmanship. The dynamic between the two protagonists is compelling. They may dislike each other, yet they possess an almost unsettling level of insight into one another. Their observations don’t merely expose each other’s flaws—they gradually reveal who the other person truly is. As fragments of their shared past unfold layer by layer, every scene gains new meaning, and not a single moment feels wasted. Read more

This show is an absolute master class in performance and storytelling. There’s a certain kind of magic when every individual performance draws you completely into their individual character while also creating such powerful on stage chemistry. Perhaps it was because this was the second-to-last performance, or perhaps it’s simply because August Wilson was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Either way, the result is extraordinary. Wilson’s script is overwhelming at times. But the cast brings each word to life with full-bodied, deeply passionate performances. There are moments of deep discomfort, as there should be when confronting the legacy of slavery, the brutality of the Middle Passage, and the lasting demons of forced labor. I left the theater in awe of every actor on that stage. Read more

Another sweet, quiet, lovely play by Bubba Weiler that entreats you to lean in and listen. This one is about faith and friendship, and doubting them both. While the plot and themes are nothing new, the perspective — told through the eyes of two altar boys — makes it different. The two teen actors give wonderful performances, which really makes the play resonate more than it might otherwise. Read more

It has a really terrific score (albeit reminiscent of many other musicals), amazing vocals (and terrific diction!), an interesting story with highly relevant themes, sharp choreography, and really wonderful design and staging. Nettles gives a very solid performance and blows the roof off with her vocals. I appreciate her guts to write and star in the piece, and it almost completely pays off. I think some revisions to the book and lyrics would help, but it was generally a valiant first outing. Read more

I was won over by the connection that Tracee Ellis Ross brings to this role. The best word to describe this show is “human”. It uncovers the flaws that we control and those that we don’t. It takes us through the human attempts to control the world around us, but more so, how we can and should find the brilliant things, the small yet beautiful moments that make life worth living. If I made my own list of Brilliant Things, the moment Tracee flashes you that wide-eyed Disney-princess smile from the back row of the onstage seating would absolutely make the cut. Read more

I walked out having sung along to songs that were living somewhere in my unconscious mind. There’s something quietly wonderful about that. The performers are the heart of it. Genuinely talented, playing live instruments, singing live, and bringing real warmth to every number. You can tell they love what they’re doing, and that energy is contagious in the best way. One of the better new plays I’ve seen in recent years. This is a thoughtful, honest, funny, and affecting play about friendship and growing up (and apart). While almost 3.5 hours, the play is broken up into three hour-long acts, so it moves quickly — like a TV series where you can’t wait to watch the next episode. The characters and dialogue feel very real, and all the actors deeply inhabit their roles. I’d strongly recommend this show and hope it has a successful life past this initial run. Read more

Setting the story against divided walls and weaving in a few perhaps-too-on-the-nose references to the current politics felt a bit forced at times, but it was a risk worth taking with a story everyone already knows. And honestly, to experience Shakespeare in Spanish in the middle of Central Park felt like an incredible privilege that reflects the beauty, diversity, and spirit of New York City. Read more

This is a very solid piece of docudrama, and is buoyed by excellent performances from an absolutely stacked cast of stage stalwarts. For a show with a rotating cast and a script that’s directly from historic transcripts, I expected the actors to be on book — they’re not. While there are some slow moments here and there, the show moves very quickly (for an intermission-less 1 hr 45 min) and gallops towards a riveting ending. Read more

Given free rein to go big, he delivers a full belting, exuberent performance that feels completely authentic to who he is. There are a few full stage numbers bringing fantastic choreography, costumes, and pure joy, but ultimately this show belongs to the electric chemistry between Billy Porter and Wayne Brady. Read more

This is a sweet, touching play about women dealing with death and indiscretion. While not necessarily a new story, it’s well-told, with emotional depth and humor. The second act loses a little momentum, and is much shorter than the first — it ends before you’d expect it to. That being said, there are some lovely character arcs to witness in the second act. All four actresses are very well cast — this is one of the more well-acted plays I’ve seen at Irish Rep. Read more

This all-Asian-American production of the relatively obscure Shakespeare trilogy of Henry VI is epic in multiple senses. Performed in four acts across two performances with a total run time of almost six hours, it follows a series of territorial and political conflicts under King Henry VI’s reign. The scale of this play makes for an undeniably epic undertaking by this formidable cast. 3 actors, 3 instruments, a handful of lighting cues — that’s almost everything this play has, and somehow it’s exactly enough. The lead actor can shift a scene from laughter to tension and heartbreak in a heartbeat. One moment the audience is chuckling; the next, the room is holding its breath. And somehow he’s doing all of this while playing the piano quite professionally. Watching the performers move so effortlessly between musicianship and acting is one of the production’s greatest pleasures. Read more

Being a teenage girl is hard enough; add race, identity, and grief, and it becomes even more difficult. This play follows five girls brought together at a camp called “Indian Princess” — where they are supposedly meant to learn about Native American culture through crafts that feel hollow and out of context. What they actually gain is something far more meaningful: bonds built over shared losses, fears, and dreams. These complex topics are showcased in a way that feels natural. Every actor’s performance is bold — the characters are multidimensional, with real contradictions, and the physicality of the acting makes them feel genuinely real. Together, they guide the audience through a range of emotions, from anger to hope, culminating in a deeply moving moment when the girls discover the power of sisterhood. I especially praise the playwright for bringing these issues to the table with such courage. This play is for anyone interested in conversations around race, identity, and privilege — but also for those who want to explore the father-daughter bond and friendship in the teenage years. The show follows an aging gay couple as they introduce a mysterious stranger with a painful past into their lives. It is quite rare for me to get mad at a pause for intermission; however, when watching “Jerome,” I was antsy to hear the rest of the story. Although it took a moment for me to become invested in the story, once the dinner scene started, I was hooked. Frankly, I would have happily welcomed a four hour, intermission-less version of this play. The cast is phenomenal and creates wholly emphatic characters that you want to invest your time getting to know. Each actor was a standout in their own way, but I found myself watching Ken Barnett (Bruin) the most. Barnett is a master in minute expressions and gazes that showcase the character’s inner world. Dustin Wills’ direction is nothing short of stunning. I was impressed by the range of ways he found to stage scenes that could easily become “park and barks.” Additionally, Wills’ scenic design is gorgeous and unfolds beautifully. Lastly, if theater is an empathy machine, then John J. Caswell, Jr. (playwright) is a brilliant engineer. As unassuming as the play may seem at first, the more it unravels, the more haunting it becomes. The show deals with profound questions of the lengths one can change and what forgiveness means for both parties. Also, the choice to focus on older characters—notably gay men—does not go unnoticed in a world that sees to solely focus on younger stories. “Jerome” is a perfect play to kickstart pride month. If you are a fan of Samuel D. Hunter or Tony Kushner’s writing, you’ll enjoy “Jerome.” Read more

This is one of my favorite Wilson plays and, even though this production is far less stellar than the last revival, the play still shines. The leads are great, but don’t go in thinking Cedric and Taraji are the leads — they may get the final bows, but this is an ensemble play. Ruben Santiago-Hudson is terrific, as is Joshua Boone, and they perform the standout roles. There’s a lot of wonky direction (it seems like Allen can never properly finish a scene), but Wilson’s words are poetic and resonant, and the story is endlessly compelling. Read more

This show isn’t probably isn’t for everyone—it’s sprawling, non linear, and lush—but if it is for you I think it’ll really stick with you. I feel lucky to have caught Heather’s last show “Oratorio for Living Things.” Where that show is a carefully orchestrated communal meditation this one feels deeply personal with looser edges and more narrative but every bit as compelling. Kenita Miller really gives this show its soul but there are some incredible performances with some memorable moments when the cast jumps in. The staging and lighting design for this show also really draw you in. This show is a little bit ghost story, a little bit spoken word and a lot of gorgeous music. It’s definitely worth checking out if you like less traditional works. I think any seat here would be good but I’d suggest splurging on orchestra seats. Read more

Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody

This experience was an oddly mixed bag. First off, the prices are WAY too expensive for what this is — a Fringe show at best. That being said, there’s literal Broadway talent on stage and this very game cast of five has the energy of ten. There’s also demonstrable craft in the catchy music and clever lyrics. It’s only when the script tries to pander to the audience that it loses steam. (The audience interactivity and on-the-nose Drag Race jokes, seemingly imported from Titanique, are fortunately scant.) The audience was screaming with laughter from the get-go, but often missed some of the funniest, sliest moments. (Granted, many were musical theater insider jokes.) The audience vibe was “gay bar crashed by bachelorette party”. It’s what leads to the overall experience being a little off-putting, but taking the musical at face value (minus the audience), it’s not half bad! Read more

This show was delightful! Whimsical and wistful and filled with unexpected moments. It centers on a mysterious and prestigious Emporium store everyone wants to work at. This is an incomplete work by Thorton Wilder, adapted and completed by Kirk Lynn. This show breaks the 4th wall and brings the adaptation process into the show in a really satisfying way. Even when I saw it early in previews the cast was excellent, taking on many different roles. I also really loved the way this show was staged. I’d highly recommend it. Read more

The voices were incredible, the songs were awesome, I loved the story and learning about that part of the history, as it’s a true story, a few really really strong actors, nice set, and amazing how so many actors play so many roles so fluidly and clearly in such a tight space. This play would be amazing in a bigger space. Loved the second half the most but it’s a long musical - so be in the mood for it - very Hamilton ish vibes. Some actors were not always loud enough or clear enough (accents challenging at times) but overall it was probably one of the best productions I have seen at 59E59. Major shoutout to Isaac Gryn, Preeya Kalidas and Jez Unwin. Honestly every single person on this cast was terrific! Job well done! Read more

The Balusters

The Balusters is one of those shows that probably won’t dominate the headlines, but absolutely delivers a very solid two hours of theater. If you caught Eureka Day last season on Broadway, you’ll recognize the same plat structure and the same brand of uncomfortable laughter that hits perhaps a little too close to home. The play centers on a neighborhood committee of well-meaning, deeply flawed do-gooders. Chaos ensues over stop signs and racism, bias, and just about every other “-ism” imaginable. Watching each character slowly realize they are, in fact, part of the problem is both the joke and the point. The ensemble is strong overall, though there are moments where the timing is off, feeling more like delivering lines than being in the moment of emotion. There’s also some direct symbolism. Bring your high school class, they’ll ace the post-show discussion. That said, the set adds smart, intentional details (keep an eye on the artwork), scene transitions are fluid, and the music choices are genuinely spot-on. It may not be groundbreaking, but this show is sharp, self-aware, and very validating for all of us who know the pain of the neighborhood facebook groups and community meetings. Read more

This was campy, silly, fun. I laughed, but not quite as hard as the people next to me. Watching rich people get drunk and unravel is a Broadway staple that can easily become insufferable, but Kelli O’Hara and Rose Byrne steer the chaos with a loveable charm. The physical comedy is a standout for sure. Surprisingly, I feel in love with the design. The set is detailed, but the lighting in particular deserves a moment as it somehow captures that post-rain, early-evening glow. I found myself looking out the window on stage. Maybe it stands out because the show itself doesn’t aim to overwhelm. At the end of the day, Fallen Angels is 90 minutes of stylish, slightly tipsy, classic (yes, very bougie, white) Broadway escapism. Read more

This is a relentlessly dark, depressing, and bleak play, despite intermittent comic relief. Unfortunately, the show’s scenes and monologues are pretty interminable, and we all said we were phasing in and out without ever really missing a beat. That being said, the play is relevant and the actors are game, even if their performances are uneven. (As always, I tend not to like Scott Elliott’s direction.) The best part of the show is its physical production elements — the set, lighting, and sound design is probably the best I’ve seen in this venue. Read more

Rheology is one of the most beautiful plays I have ever seen, weird and wonderful as it oscillates between the joy of connection and the pain of loss. Bulbul Chakraborty is an incredible actor precisely because she doesn’t see herself as an actor. She and her son, director/playwright/actor Shayok Misha Showdhury, are smart to open the show with a physics lecture from Chakraborty that shows us just how warm, funny, and alive the mother is before we deconstruct and collectively feel the tragedy of her impending death. Her physicist esoteria is so beautifully concrete, and Showdhury’s theatremaker lingo is so meandering. He’s the one who will lose her, after all, and he’s had significantly less time than she has to come to terms with her mortality. As the theorist, Chakraborty gives us concrete data; as the experimentalist, Showdhury shows us every angle he can think of to disrupt that data. The play’s exploration of just where a mother ends and her son begins allows for the most gorgeous of onstage revelations about grief, life, death, and where we go when we’re not here anymore. The Receptionist is easily one of the best plays produced in NYC this year. A hilarious look at office culture with a dark twist, the play will stick with you long after the curtain falls. Brilliant playwright, Adam Bock has crafted a nuanced piece that is consistently funny with a message that could not be more relevant to our world today. Director Sarah Benson’s simple staging captures bureaucracy perfectly. It is sure to resonant with anyone who has worked in an office. With that said, the world she has created onstage goes far beyond a simple workplace comedy and will send a shiver down your spine. Two-time Tony Award winner Katie Finneran is at the top of her game delivering consistent belly laughs as office manager, Beverly Wilkins. Every move she makes, every line delivered is done with such finesse, even a simple action like answering the phone sends audiences into a fit of laughter. At the same time, the sincerity Finneran brings to Beverly makes the overall message of the show hit that much harder. Her performance is not to be missed. I don’t want to say too much about this production as to not give anything away, but it’s rare to find a show that works so well at every level. Do yourself a favor and go see this incredible play before it closes on May 24. Maybe I’ll see you there, as I’m already planning a trip back to see it again. Read more

An intensely awkward first date rom-com about two down-on-their-luck schmoes that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. Strong is especially terrific, creating an incredibly complex character. (Stoll is good, too, but feels slightly miscast.) This play isn’t for everyone. I didn’t love it, but found a lot of value and resonance in it and think it generated a lot of interesting post-show discussion. My partner, on the other hand, hated it to no end. But, I think that’s part of the play’s point — it’s supposed to make you feel as uncomfortable and as awkward as its two characters. Read more

It took me a while to really understand the title of this one. Is Becky Shaw just the catalyst bomb dropped into everyone’s lives to expose the chaos underneath, rather than the more normalized chaos we all adapt to every day? This 2.5 hours of dysfunction, though, is easy to watch: funny, sharp, and just uncomfortable enough in the best way. More than once, I found myself wondering, did he really just say that, or did I just want him to? The power of this show really comes in the first 45 minutes, where Lauren Patten and Alden Ehrenreich play off each other like absolute pros. Their banter is perfection and had me in real fits of laughter. Not a single character is especially likable, and the ending doesn’t neatly wrap anything up, but the ensemble’s timing and the pure brilliance of the script make Becky Shaw not just entertaining, but memorable. It’s the kind of play I’d want to read afterward and talk about over drinks — and the kind of characters that, while mostly playing total jerks, I still would want to share a bottle of wine with. This feels like a Fringe Festival performance of a true crime podcast. The story is relatively compelling (though somewhat well known), but there’s a whole lot of exposition that leads to the piece being overly long. (It can certainly be trimmed.) The lead actor is dynamic, but it doesn’t feel like an award-winning, nuanced performance (I realize he won an Olivier). The lighting and music / sound design are well done and do a great job heightening the tension, but I still didn’t find the show overly memorable, and I wouldn’t tell people to go out of their way to see this. The concept of Schmigadoon! really excited me. It’s not every day there is a new Broadway musical with so many triple threats and brilliant comedians in the cast. It’s even rarer to find a new musical that aims to pay homage to the shows that came before it. All of that should have been an easy recipe for success. Sadly, none of it was not enough to save a musical that is ultimately dull and forgettable. Most of the comedy in Schmigadoon! revolves around the fact that golden age musicals are all wildly sexist and homophobic. Though the book by Cinco Paul is clever enough, the repetitive punch lines get old quickly. Similarly, the music and lyrics also by Paul feel tired. I enjoyed the satire, but once you know what song they are parodying, it’s easy to zone out as the music adds little to the story. The melodies and lyrics are overly simplistic for the sake of laughs, but it is not enough to sustain a two and half hour musical. Instead, Schmigadoon! feels like an underdeveloped SNL sketch that is far too long. I appreciate all the musical theatre history that is incorporated into this production. There is something to be said about paying tribute to the musicals of the past. I simply wish the biggest takeaway was more than just a reminder of how slow and problematic golden age musicals used to be (and often still are.) Read more

I thought this was very okay. It’s a good musical to take teens to if they’ve already seen & Juliet and The Outsiders and need something new. There are a few flashes of brilliance (mainly credit to the director), some tremendous vocals, and killer scenic and lighting design, but it doesn’t add up to much. There are way too many songs in act one. Act two is kind of boring and ends with a whimper. There are a few great numbers in an otherwise generic pop score. The book has iffy dialogue that unfortunately isn’t rendered any better by the cast. The scene stealer is the lead vampire (Ali Louis Bourzgui), who was phenomenal in The Who’s Tommy and is delivering another killer performance here. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get enough stage time. Most vampire content should make you want to be a vampire after (they’re so cool!), but this was too bland to generate that feeling. Read more

Wow, I was not expecting to attend a show featuring TikTok dancers and end up in tears by the end of it. This was an incredibly moving show that had me laughing and cheering the entire way through. The energy from the dancers was contagious, and it genuinely felt like a party. The show is about the hour leading up to midnight on New Year’s eve and features a resolution and solo performance from each character, but is mainly centered around the relationship of the two leads. The way they use foley with movement in this show is genius, and so enjoyable and satisfying to watch. It’s incredible how many emotions can be expressed with so little dialogue. The actor’s bodies told the whole story. I would highly recommend going to see this! I practically danced the whole way home. Read more

This is a brilliantly clear and concise Titus. For those who hate Shakespeare because they can’t figure out what’s going on, there’s no worry of that here! The cast is strong, and is led by a spectacularly thrilling Patrick Page. The direction is sharp and modern, and offers a surprising amount of humor in this dark tale. This is one of the best Shakespearean productions I’ve seen — kudos to Red Bull Theater for knocking two in a row out of the park (the other being “Richard II”). Be warned — you have to be okay with a LOT of violence and blood. Read more

Cats: The Jellicle Ball

Cats the musical gets a lot of hate, but the Jellicle Ball deserves all the love. This show is layered with passion, artistry, history, and storytelling that feels far more magical than Mr. Mistoffelees. First and foremost, this is a party so wear your glitter, bring your fan, and be ready to dance. But beyond that, this show is a powerful tribute to ballroom culture, with the legends who have shaped so much of the culture we see today on the stage right in front of you. There’s an overwhelming sense of beauty and joy, as you rethink the show as so much deeper than some dancing humans in cat costumes. It’s an expression of identity, community, happiness, and rebirth. For Broadway loyalists the songs remain, with added dance interludes and a modern edge. The choreography is everything, especially with André De Shields continuing to prove that he is, in every sense, a legend. Read more

The Rocky Horror Show

After shivering with antici…pation, I’m thrilled to report The Rocky Horror Show is back on Broadway and better than ever. This production has a delightfully classic feel, delivering the healthy dose of nostalgia many fans are hoping for. With that said, Director Sam Pinkleton has truly made it his own by assembling a stellar cast and creative team. Luke Evans is giving everything he has to the role of Frank-N-Furter. The result is a sultry, quick-witted, powerhouse that leads the show seamlessly. Andrew Durand and Stephanie Hsu are perfectly paired as Brad and Janet. Harvey Guillén is a frequent scene-steeler as both Eddie and Dr. Scott. The four phenomenal Phantoms played by Boy Radio, Caleb Quezon, Larkin Reilly and Paul Soileau bring the show to a new level as they flail around the stage like deranged Muppets. Yet, the true standout of this production is Amber Gray as Riff Raff. The iconic role originated by the show’s creator, Richard O’Brein feels brand new with Gray at the helm. From her raspy yet powerful vocals, to her deadpan mannerisms, it feels as if Riff Raff has been waiting over fifty years just for Gray to find him. I could go on and on about all there is to enjoy about this revival. It is a true love letter to queer culture that our world could certainly use more of. Anyone looking for a wild night out will feel right at home at Studio 54. So, sit back, relax and “give yourself over to absolute pleasure.” Read more

The Fear of 13

Normally, a play built around a single character narrating their past in long, detailed monologues (especially with an accent or heightened character bits) is exactly the kind of thing that loses me. And yet, that’s precisely what Adrien Brody delivers in Fear of 13, and I was completely enthralled. More than once during the hour and fifty minutes, I found myself thinking, “Oh right—this is why he has two Oscars.” The man can act. The man can make you feel. With a different lead, I suspect I’d rather read this story as a novel. There are moments throughout where the dialogue could be tighter, but when you have a talent like Brody, it makes sense to let him build the drama and earn what feels like an inevitable Tony nomination. The story, inspired by the real-life case of Nick Yarris, follows an innocent man on death row. It’s the kind of narrative that has you hearing audience members whisper, “Wait… that can’t be real.” (I was that audience member.) I won’t spoil it, but it’s a journey that makes you laugh, cry, squirm, and question everything. And if it didn’t, would it really be Tony-worthy Broadway via the West End? The supporting cast holds their own. It’s hard to believe this is Tessa Thompson’s Broadway debut. She’s completely natural in a very complex role. I don’t quite buy her as deeply in love with Brody’s character, but their mutual intrigue and chemistry are undeniable. And Ephraim Sykes? I could listen to him all day—I just wish the role gave him a bit more to do. All said, in a season of powerhouse plays right now, don’t skip on this one. Read more

I have tremendous respect for them as a playwright and a satirist and the performers were good performers. I just think I’m frustrated that this is the closest thing we’re getting to a musical out of Playwrights right now (probably because one piano and three actors is low budget compared to most musicals, but I think musical theater is worth investing in!) I get that it was a silly and at times clever send up of the art form and there’s a lot to mock And it wasn’t punching down like most of the rest of the “satire” currently out there. but. My big complaint is the music of it all, and it’s a musical- it’s like if a gay millennial transplant took over forbidden Broadway (there were some cheeky references!) and insisted on writing the music themself with limited musical vocabulary. Yes it was meant to be pastiche but the quality was mismatched to what is otherwise fairly strong. It was ok for what it is but it leaves much to be desired. Read more

I enjoyed every single minute of it and was genuinely glad that I saw this production at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center, a perfect space for this piece and for the delightful audience participation (don’t fret—you will not be forced to do anything you do not want to do). This production not only sheds new light on Shakespeare’s words but also shows the world a group of people whose lives are largely opaque to their neurotypical counterparts. The cast’s honest performance intersects with Shakespeare’s text and asks us: what is madness and what is sanity? What is love and what is theatre? The projection also adds emotional depth to the show. In addition, I enjoyed the talkback with the director and the tour manager. They let us know that the casting decision was purely artistic. They also discussed the unique rehearsal process to which all ensemble members contributed. A must see! Read more

This show is such a trip and such a perfect encapsulation of the pressures of adulthood. Can they accomplish the tasks of leisure, professional, performance and making a meal while also on treadmills trying to beat their personal best distance record? Although I thought it was ridiculous to stage this play so soon after the last revival, this production makes seeing it again worthwhile. While I skipped the Pierce revival, I saw the two before it — Dennehy and Hoffman. I wasn’t enthusiastic about the Hoffman revival, but I remember being really taken with the Dennehy production. This is comparable, and has a spectacular clarity to it. The focus is on the performances, which are the real stunner — each of the four leads and many of the supporting cast (especially K. Todd Freeman) are riveting and magnetic. The design choices — from set to costumes, and even props — can feel odd at first, but lend subtle heft to the show. They make for a vibrant, post-show discussion. Whether you’ve seen this play or not, this one is really worth the ticket. (It’s just a shame it’s in a massive barn that’s meant for musicals, but fortunately the production fills it!) Read more

I love The Bengsons — this is the third show of theirs I’ve seen. Unfortunately, it’s also the weakest, but by no means was I upset that I saw it. This is the first time where they shifted to something between a story-song cycle with a band into more of a fully-staged musical. It’s midway between those two formats. Fortunately, Abigail is remarkably adept at telling this very personal story with the theatricality of a born stage performer. Unfortunately, Shaun is naturally awkward, especially when he isn’t holding an instrument, so his performance feels like he’s somewhat unsuccessfully trying to play himself — it reads as a bit inauthentic. Their score is more atonal than what I remember from their previous shows, and only one or two songs really soar. I’ll still happily see The Bengsons’ future work, but nothing has come close to “Hundred Days”. For those new to The Bengsons, I’m not sure this will really resonate unless you’ve personally known the trials and tribulations of pregnancy. As someone who doesn’t want kids, I sincerely appreciated the sentiment, but couldn’t totally connect. Read more

I cried so hard my head started to hurt. I thought I had come prepared, but apparently not enough. While the piece centers on a rather familiar cancer-related and life/death theme, the performance is enriched by constant audience interactions, actors’ fluid transition between characters, and immediate transitions in mood and music. The instruments involved were the conventional choices, yet they worked extremely well within the structure. Vulnerability, sadness, anger, and joy — the layered emotional landscape made it deeply evident how much dedication and effort both the performers and musicians had poured into this production. I do have a small complaint about the lighting. Although I understand it was necessary for reading the lyrics, it also made my and other audiences tear-streaked faces quite visible to each other, especially when we have two sections facing each other. Overall, this was a 10 out of 10 performance. I can hardly think of anything that needed improvement. Read more

This is a well-needed play for the current political climate, one that helps us understand how diplomacy works in real life, and gives us slight hope. As someone who immigrated to the US, I found myself intrigued by the storytelling around Cuba, South America, and their relationship with the United States during the years. Coming without the weight of too much familiarity, real events and real people felt fresh and urgent to me in a way. The play jumps between time and location, centering around Julissa Reynoso and a deceptively simple but powerful idea: when you put human beings at the center instead of rigid rules, countries can actually move past hatred and find somewhat common ground. Julissa is written with real depth, she feels like a full person, not a symbol. The set is minimal while effective, and the staging places the audience on both sides, close to the actors, creating an intimacy that pulls you into the world of the play rather than keeping you at a distance. I would recommend this to people who want to take a closer look at this part of history, or who are simply looking for a way forward, because sometimes drawing inspiration from the past is the way to move forward. At the very least, that’s what it did for me. It gave me hope, resistance, and something close to a handbook on how to do the right thing and serve the people. Read more

While this 90-minute play becomes a tad weary and wears out its welcome around the hour mark, Ferguson elevates it so much that it remains enjoyable to watch him until the very end. Additionally, the setting is remarkable — a beautiful, site-specific staging that works extremely well for the material, and it’s a bonus to be able to watch Ferguson in an up-close-and-personal way. Charlotte d’Amboise has little to do, but looks remarkable as she slinks around the intricately adorned space. While not perfect, this feels like an “only in New York” theatrical experience. This show is pure goofy fun. I was honestly surprised by how strong the visual design was—the costumes and set were both extremely well done, and there was creative staging and effects throughout, plus some genuinely breathtaking choreography. The book is silly, but it’s well performed by a cast of talented actors that really sell it. And who cares what words are being said when they can sing like that? That said, I really couldn’t care about the words because I could not hear them. The mixing was very off and the instrumentals completely drowned out the voices. I got the gist, I enjoyed the musicality of it, the goth glam pop-rock orchestrations are a ton of fun, but let’s just say when they passed out librettos with lyrics at the top of the show I should’ve taken that as an omen. Thankfully the visuals told the story well. It reminded me of the French musicals that lean harder on being a dance piece than a book musical. Read more

An absolutely adorable romp of a musical! The book really excels here, with jokes coming at you a mile a minute. The game cast, led by Grey Henson and his impeccable comic timing, is having a ton of fun. The music is average yet agreeable, and fortunately what it lacks in brilliance is made up for in scores by the dialogue. For the most part, I had a smile on my face throughout, and I appreciated how relevant the writers made the story. While they hammer it home a bit too much at times, it’s still sly and wry enough to keep you laughing. This is very much in line with the Toxic Avenger musical that played New World Stages a while back (there’s even a comic sequence that seems lifted from it). That venue would be a great place for this following its run at City Center. It’s definitely fluff, but it’s fun! Read more

The acting and direction is excellent and this script keep you on your toes the whole way through. The staging of this show really stands apart for its whimsical staging that moves away from the literal with delightful and impactful results. This theater is small and any seat here would be good. While this is a somewhat typical drama about two siblings, what makes it unique is that it’s set in the world of MMA fighting, which is rarely (if ever) seen on stage. The two roles demand not only tremendous physicality, but virtuosic acting, and the leads are perfectly cast. The finely-drawn characters are given their due in beautifully-layered performances. Even though the play itself is slightly above average (but somewhat slow at times) and the staging is well done, the actors are the real reason to see this play. Read more

Ugh, I loved it. I love any show that talks about what it’s like to grow up as a woman. There’s something so special about the reflection between Antigone and Dicey’s (narrator) arch throughout the story as it speaks on the timeless pressures and constraints placed on women. Although I’ve never read “Antigone,” the exchange between the character and the reader is a relationship I bet we can all trace to a beloved book of ours. My favorite piece of this production was the way it held time. The show was constantly moving—not a blackout used for scene transitions in sight! Although the setting changes frequently, the simplistic moving on and off set pieces by the narrator as she lead us to our next scene helped root the overall production. This helped when we moved in and out of the Antigone story and into the narrators as time became fluid. Although it was the cast’s second show, there is already a strong ensemble forming that supported one another throughout the newly added scenes. I’m sure they’ll become more electric as the production continues. My only criticism is overshadowing of act two’s louder sound effects on the actors. Although I was in the third row, I struggled to listen to these pieces of dialogue, but I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon enough. Overall, the show was cathartic, yet surprisingly funny. For those that loved Robert Icke’s “Oedipus,” or Bess Wohl’s “Liberation,” you are sure to love this as well! Read more

The Reservoir” is a story that follows Josh (Noah Galvin), a university student struggling with alcohol. He finds himself back home, where he also navigates his relationship with his grandparents. Galvin does quite well. There such a potent dose of Josh’s naïveté which affects every corner of the play, almost annoyingly so. But I find that effectively captures a myopia that comes from being a struggling young adult. The writing can fall a bit trope or on the nose a few times, and sometimes feels disjointed. But the cast is strong and I still think it’s worth a watch. Read more

Every once in a while a play comes along and reaches into your chest and unlocks something deeply emotional. Clare Barron wrote this play, as she notes in the script, “in the middle of a personal crisis — before anything was resolved.” You feel that. It is messy and unresolved as the characters struggle through the small talk that fills the silence around the things too large to name. And yet, somehow, the play holds an almost radical tenderness. Barron’s perhaps optimistic belief, as she put it, is that “there’s profound comfort to be found just in living privately together.” Sitting in that 165-seat house, surrounded by strangers in the dark, you believe her. Alia is stunning as Mae and Anne’s direction is emotional and cathartic. The newly revitalized Cherry Lane Theatre by A24, is the perfect home for this play. The space is intimate and historic, and shoutout to a glass of wine that only costs $12 (cheaper than most nonprofits in town). Let the play wash over you. Stunning, deeply emotional, and quietly devastating. Don’t miss it! Read more

Lauren Yee’s Mother Russia, directed with razor-sharp precision by Teddy Bergman, feels strikingly timely in today’s political climate. It’s bold, biting, and darkly funny in all the right ways. Adam Chanler-Berat and David Turner were the undeniable anchors of the evening — fully committed, layered, and electric whenever they were on stage. Steven Boyer was absolutely unhinged in the best way possible, bringing wild, laugh-out-loud energy that jolted the audience to attention. I only wish the script gave the incomparable Rebecca Naomi Jones more room to soar — she’s a true powerhouse, but the material doesn’t quite let her spread her wings. The set design was phenomenal and the direction felt airtight and purposeful throughout. Read more

This touching, funny, and sentimental (albeit slight) play is buoyed by Radcliffe’s exceptional energy and uncanny ability to connect to the audience. (This is a “small” play and Radcliffe was able to sell it to the balcony.) Audience interaction makes up about half the play, which is only just over an hour. And while there’s a lot of fun and sweet moments to be had amidst the looming specter of depression and suicide, the play itself wears a bit thin (and becomes relatively predictable) as it goes on. That being said, it’s a nice night at the theatre with fare that’s a bit different than everything else on the boards. Read more

We might have to close the book on two-hander family dramas after this; I’m not sure anyone else has a chance at surpassing what Phanésia Pharel and Taylor Reynolds have achieved here with The Waterfall. Riveting and intimate drama, compelling play structure, perfect pacing, and an extraordinary cast made this production such a moving and fantastic experience. Pharel’s play centers on two Haitian women, a mother-daughter pair, who are characterized with so much richness and whimsy, then put into a circumstance that causes them to have jaw-droppingly lethal dialogue. Patrice Johnson Chevannes and Natalie Paul blew me away in their performance of such a complex relationship. Reynolds’ direction perfectly defines the soft contours and sharp edges of the experience of loving someone without understanding them. There’s so much kudos to offer the production and design team all around, but I especially have to shout out Venus Gulbranson (Lighting Design) and Kaileykielle Hoga and DJ Pots (Sound Design) for their work conjuring the crucial water elements in the play without a drop of live liquid onstage - the production manager in me thanks you! If there ever was a timely play. That’s one of the best ways to describe this piece without giving too much away. Diving into the mix of ethics and technology, this one act play kept me and my guest quite intrigued into how it would all unfold and what choices the characters would make next. The cast is one of the best elements of the production. A really good group of young actors - most with some recognizable tv credits - gave great performances this evening. The production in general is good enough to recommend it - definitely see myself having many conversations around the experience itself, but mostly around the subject matter and where we are headed as a society vs what could/can we do these days. Honestly, that’s already much more than some shows provide us. Read more

In an age bombarded with spectacles and information overload, The Dinosaurs is a genuine invitation to rediscover the power of words and in-person gatherings (I was not surprised to find out that it was written during and partially in response to the pandemic). Unlike trauma porns that send audience members sobbing, it covers a range of difficult topics with care. Catharsis is achieved not through tears, but the bittersweet realization that time will pass. The cast delivers a poignant and brilliant performance, and I very much enjoyed the understated way in which the seemingly realistic staging deals with temporality (the clock on set is not working for a reason). I recommend the piece to people who are looking for an introspective evening in the company of other people. Read more

Kramer/Fauci at NYU Skirball is a sharp, urgent, and deeply human world premiere. Written and directed by Daniel Fish, the production feels both intimate and epic, capturing the tension, courage, and complexity of two towering figures in a moment that reshaped history in regard to the AIDS pandemic. It’s intellectually thrilling, emotionally resonant, and staged with striking clarity. The acting is brilliant, and the staging is super creative. The show is serious but filled with laughter and joy - even with such a sensitive topic. Brill and Ryan gave powerful performances with supporting ensemble giving depth and strength in all they added to the production. Creative direction and styling by Fish. You are in for a treat! A modernist version of a Greek tragedy, this feels like a partner piece to the “Oedipus” that was just on Broadway, but unfortunately isn’t nearly as good. At 80 minutes, it feels long, and despite the exceptional acting, the only scenes that really grab your attention are those between Tobias Menzies and Emma D’Arcy. The play is solid, but not memorable. Read more

What I love most about New York City Center Encores! is their willingness to produce shows like High Spirits. I would argue the majority of audiences have not seen or even heard of this musical, yet it remains an important part of musical theatre history. For this reason, I would recommend this charming updated production as chances to see this musical are few. With that said, High Spirits is certainly not the strongest production New York City Center Encores! has produced in recent years. It’s important to note that this is a true concert production. The actors spend most of the show reading from scripts and are often parked in front of music stands. Though it is common for actors to carry books in Encores! productions, I would argue they are utilized quite a bit more here than I have seen in past productions. This leaves some moments feeling dull and disconnected. Director Jessica Stone’s staging unfortunately doesn’t help as it is often overly simplistic and at times stagnant. There are a few impressive special effects that highlight the supernatural elements of the story, but those are few and far between. Even as a concert production the show often feels unfinished. I’m always excited to see some horror onstage, and BUG has a lot of it. First and foremost it’s not for the faint of heart, and it’s not a dry January play either. It’s disturbing to watch both paranoia and abuse warp a person’s worldview so effectively, and Carrie Coon’s performance of that transformation as Agnes is challenging in a good way. Namir Smallwood’s performance as Peter had a similar impact on me, and I think there are parts of his origin story that take on a very different meaning when played by a Black actor, as in this production. I think there are some moments in this play that add more absurdity than I think is necessary. There was more uncomfortable laughter than I was expecting, when I think the most impactful parts of the play leave me in stunned and disturbed silence. I also would’ve loved to see this production lean more into the abject grossness of an (even imagined) bug infestation, and not just the violence the infestation motivates. Huge shoutout to Josh Schmidt’s sound design and J. Jared Janas’ hair and makeup design for stressing me all the way out! Read more

Though it is far from perfect, I appreciate director Alex Timber’s attempt to bring a different kind of storytelling to Broadway. With such a unique format, I won’t try to compare All Out to anything else. The show is neither a play nor a musical, but it is loaded with songs and scenes, just not in the way audiences are used to. The scenes feel more like business-themed bedtime stories read aloud by a revolving door of well known comedians. The stories written by Simon Rich are clever and never end the way you expect them to. Simple staging gives the comedians a lot of freedom to make the stories their own. Standouts in the cast I saw include Mike Birbiglia, who proves once again to be a masterful storyteller through his simple sincerity and off-beat humor, alongside Wayne Brady, whose hilarious performance of the story “Oatsy” is sure to stick with me for a long time. The music written and performed by the band Lawrence led by the sibling duo Gracie and Clyde Lawrence brings a very different vibe to the production. The music from their most recent album, Family Business, fits the theme of the show well and the arrangements by Clyde Lawrence bring a much needed energy to the stage. As someone who was already familiar with Lawrence, I can say any diehard fans will be pleased with how often they are featured. Gracie Lawrence is certainly the biggest highlight of the production bringing a vocal performance that is unmatched by anyone else on Broadway. She alone is worth a trip to the theater. However, the band’s larger than life performances don’t totally mesh with the subdued nature of the storytellers which I would say is the show’s biggest weakness. It is almost as if audiences are watching two different shows woven together by a loose theme. Still, with all the talent onstage, I can somewhat forgive the production’s disjointed nature. Overall, All Out is an enjoyable theatrical experience. Would I say this show is a must-see? Absolutely not. But if you can accept the format for what it is, you are sure to have a fun evening at the theater. Read more

This show is classic, powerful, and urgently timely Broadway, and is a perfect case for introducing an Ensemble Tony Award. Every performer in this production commands your emotions for the full three hours. Mid-show standing ovations are well-deserved, and Joshua Henry and Nichelle Lewis deliver astonishing vocal power. Brandon Uranowitz brings a level of artistry, physicality, and storytelling mastery that you can’t look away from, and, at moments, I wondered if he were a time traveler moving through history before our eyes. I’m typically hesitant about shows where children have significant roles, but these young performers carry the heart and the future of America with remarkable skill and sincerity. Ragtime explores the immigrant experience, humanity’s struggle to understand “the other,” and the enduring realities of white privilege and racism. In today’s political climate, it is not always an easy watch, but the beauty of the voices, the scale of the cast, and the emotional honesty make this a show that matters and entertains. Read more

It’s easy to spot how much the performers genuinely enjoy this production. The low-budget aesthetic and intimate venue are not drawbacks here, but actually advantages; they sharpen and foreground what the show is fundamentally about. If you’re not put off by the scrappy, makes-do quality that comes with limited resources, or by its oddly off-kilter sense of humor, I would recommend it. The play is oddly captivating. The music is unexpectedly strong, and the production drifts fluidly between comedy, reality, absurdity and melancholy. Even when it touches on real-world themes, the show maintains a delicate balance, allowing the audience to feel both entertained and emotionally affected without tipping too far in either direction. That said, it’s worth noting that your experience can be heavily influenced by the energy of the audience on the night you attend. Read more

There’s an undeniable chemistry and charm between them, but their deep co-dependence also brings turmoil. Abbey Lee and Owen Teague’s charisma and vulnerability brings you into their world. A rather sparsely staged two-hander, they rock back and forth across memories and chunks of time, trying to hold on to each other. Lee in particular stunned with her range. The seating at the front features small tables that give the space the cabaret feel, and you can have a drink during the performance. The show is entertaining, using caustic humor to touch on current events in a way that feels quite relevant. While the stage design and costumes are very minimal, the performers and musicians are talented and carry the evening well. It’s a low-budget production with a 70s vibe. If you go in without expecting a massive spectacle, you’ll likely enjoy the chance to see seasoned artists at work in an intimate setting. Read more

Great performances. Way too many characters in such a small venue trying to keep up with each one of them individually and as a group. Love the mostly all female cast and the strong performances but the musical writing on this made it extremely hard to follow and understand all the lyrics being sung. I wish there had been captions or something to keep up. I feel like the show has so much potential - it’s just not fully there yet. I hope to see this again in the future. Let’s keep this one delayed to ensure a smooth flight! The ending number was the most memorable. Read more

In a world saturated with AI storylines, Marjorie Prime feels notably less judgmental and more balanced in how it approaches the story. There are moments where the plot gaps are a step too far, but the performances more than make up for it. Script and plot aside, this small cast is exceptional. Danny Burstein and June Squibb, in particular, deliver performances where Tony nominations wouldn’t surprise me at all. As an adult with aging parents, I related to the emotional core of the show: the strain on relationships, the choices we make around care, and the complexity of navigating inevitable grief. It’s fascinating when stories of AI can feel deeply human. Read more

I’d mainly recommend this for the three leads’ very compelling performances. This is an O’Neill classic that I’d been interested to see for a while now, as it’s rarely performed. I’m not the biggest O’Neill fan, but this is a rather simple story that’s effectively told. I didn’t absolutely love it, maybe because I didn’t truly care for any of these characters. But the second act gives the leads a lot of scenery to chew on, and it’s worth seeing these actors battle it out on stage. Read more

Lots of fun and silly moments, but I didn’t really end up with any great insight on what direction or design were doing in this piece, unfortunately. Huge fan of Ryan J. I saw the original off-Broadway production of “Bug” 20 years ago and remember it being very unique and memorable, if not necessarily a spectacular play. I think the same can be said of this production — it’s really no different than the one I saw way back when. The first act is kind of slow, and then the second act becomes a crazed, bloody (dare I say “fun”??) thriller that’s unlike the usual Broadway fare. If you’re just going for Carrie Coon, she’s certainly good, but I don’t think this is a role she’ll necessarily be remembered for. If you’ve seen this play before and loved it, it’s probably worth a revisit, but don’t expect anything new. If you’re new to this play, be warned: This is an intense show that’s not for the squeamish. Read more

Same experience I had last year at All In. Just not a fan of the writing at all. I feel this shows writing was better than All In but still didn’t hit it for me. Most people leaving had the same comments. The set design was perfect this time. Cast was incredible with Jim Gaffigan, Wayne Brady (amazing), Ben Schwartz, and Cecily Strong! The stars of this show though is the performance by NYC Soul Pop Band Lawrence! Gracie Lawrence is everything. Her performance alone makes it a worthwhile see! Read more

This is the Jonathan Groff show and he makes it look damn good. It’s clear he’s having a blast and his energy is electric. I’m not generally into jukebox musicals and solidly enjoyed this. The redesign of the space is really cool. This was a great show to see from standing room and I bet the back few rows would also be a great spot to take it all in from since there’s often action in multiple spots across the theater. I’d try for the sides of the theater for the best view. Without giving anything away if I was going to spring for a table I’d try for the very center one. It’s worth noting there’s some fun audience interaction especially at the tables and to some extent in the aisles. I could see this being a great show to take a guest visiting from out of town to. It’s high energy and an all around fun time. Read more

The script is one of the best to play Broadway in years. Yes I’m biased because it is filled with references that are very much specific to my generation, but I think even beyond that it is such a great play. The way the plot unfolds is not one you can predict and when it gets going it keeps you gripped. The design is incredible, totally realistic. It felt like a 2018 classroom and the costumes were perfect. The scene transitions utilize a lighting trick that makes all the posters on the walls look like they are vibrating and I thought that was really awesome. The performances are all incredible. They are all very real, layered, and powerful. Everyone felt like a real person and it was easy to get invested in all of them. Read more

This musical has all the warmth that a New York holiday needs. The songs are quirky in the best way, leaving you wanting to go back to learn the lyrics. The two leads carry the whole thing with ease thanks to their chemistry and expert comedic timing. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sam Tutty snag a Tony nom. Sure, it’s a predictable rom-com of a musical, but a nice escape with predictable joy is exactly what you need during an NYC winter. Read more

I was fully on the edge of my seat, feeling the same electric tension you get on election night as your favorite candidate awaits the final results—every beat pulsing with unease, urgency, and revelation. The production is executed with absolute precision: lights, sound, set design, screenplay, and adaptation all lock together into a breathtaking machine. Mark Strong and Lesley Manville deliver devastating, magnetic performances that anchor the entire piece, and the ensemble meets them with equal force. The final five minutes are so unbearably intense you could hear a pin drop in Studio 54. It’s trippy, wild, and emotionally brutal in the most satisfying ways. And in the middle of all the chaos, a quiet gesture of unconditional love cuts through the noise — a reminder of what truly matters beneath the politics. I am not a huge Christmas person and was not planning on seeing this, but I was given a free ticket and decided to take a chance. Completely won me over from the moment I walked in. This production is atmospheric— sometimes scary, sometimes joyful, always magic. The music matches, whether it’s an ethereally beautiful Christmas hymn or a dance so merry it seems to exude light. They use the PAC (black box theater in the round) expertly. The show fills the room. There are a few lively interactive bits that I won’t spoil, they just need to be experienced. It’s somehow a very traditional Christmas Carol and like nothing I’ve ever seen. Read more

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is everything you hope for—and then some. The 100-year celebration dazzles with breathtaking precision from the Rockettes, whose athleticism and timing remain unmatched. The addition of Sphere-inspired visuals, Frost Fairy drones, and indoor pyrotechnics elevated the iconic numbers to new heights, making the theatre feel alive with holiday magic. Costumes and set design were consistently gorgeous, and the choreography throughout was flawless, leaving the audience in awe at every turn. While the singers delivered solid performances, the dancers were unquestionably the true stars, carrying the show with effortless brilliance. The production perfectly captures the spirit of the season, combining nostalgia, innovation, and spectacle into a 90-minute whirlwind of holiday joy. A historic, festive experience that should be on every living being’s bucket list at least once. Read more

I felt obligated to see Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter onstage, but I left wanting to hand a Tony to Brandon J. Dirden and immediately sign up an acting class taught by Michael Patrick Thornton. Waiting for Godot has layers of intellectual meaning that most of us will pretend to understand (hi, it’s me, I’m the problem), but the set, lighting, and fast-paced keep you fully entertained. even when you have absolutely no idea what’s going on. (why may actually be the point?) The couple in front of me left at intermission. Maybe they were disappointed it wasn’t Bill & Ted style, but the gratuitous Bill and Ted reference comes in the second act. All said, Brandon J Dirden is a true wow factor, and Thornton’s soliloquy is a masterclass that I assume actors dream of performing. If Godot never shows up, Dirden and Thorton make up for it. The Baker’s Wife is a quietly enchanting revival, full of heart, mischief, and Stephen Schwartz’s soaring melodies. Every performer on stage brought charm and warmth, with Scott Bakula, Alma Cuervo, Robert Cuccioli, Ariana DeBose, Arnie Burton, Judy Kuhn, and Samantha Marisol Gershman all delivering memorable moments. DeBose was particularly delightful, though I would have loved a touch more power on the iconic “Meadowlark.” Kevin William Paul was visually striking, but his slightly over-the-top performance pulled focus at times. The ensemble as a whole was strong, giving the production a cohesive, joyful energy. The design team deserves major credit—the set and costumes were gorgeous in the intimate space, and the orchestra’s sound never overpowered the singers. While I wished for slightly stronger vocals across the board, the storytelling, music, and emotional sincerity more than made up for it. This revival is a beautiful, long-overdue treat for New York theatre lovers. Read more

Another very well-written, lived-in Samuel Hunter play. I’m a fan of his work, and this is above average for him, though not my absolute favorite. (That being said, if you don’t like his typical gay-guy-stuck-in-Idaho plays, this isn’t for you.) The cast is great, and Metcalf is, as always, giving a greatly layered comic-dramatic performance. I highly recommend getting a hearing device even if you don’t typically use one — this is a small, quiet play that you want to lean into. It feels a little slow at points, but you get very invested in the characters by the end. Read more

Meet the Cartozians is a masterclass in blending history, satire, and heart, and it absolutely commands your attention from the first moment to the final curtain. The story effortlessly spans nearly a century, contrasting the struggles of Armenian Americans in the 1920s with a contemporary descendant navigating modern pressures—all portrayed by a six-person ensemble that is nothing short of extraordinary. David Cromer’s direction ties together the brilliant set, lighting, costumes, and sound design into a seamless theatrical experience. I would have never guessed this was a preview—the production is flawless, emotionally resonant, and visually stunning. The show moves from tears to laughter with surgical precision, delivering moments of historical revelation alongside biting, hysterical satire. It’s a story I didn’t fully know despite my personal connection to the Armenian community, and seeing it illuminated on stage was profoundly eye-opening. The ensemble—Raffi Barsoumian, Will Brill, Andrea Martin, Nael Nacer, Susan Pourfar, and Tamara Sevunts—gives performances that are breathtaking in every sense, with Sevunts, Martin, Brill, and Barsoumian particularly unforgettable. This is a play that demands a larger stage, a wider audience, and repeated viewings; it’s one of the season’s absolute must-sees. Read more

If Kara Young is in a show, I will be there as soon as possible. The woman has the unique ability to make you laugh hysterically and 30 seconds later, gut-punch you with the vulnerability of each complex character she chooses to bring to life. This play is no exception. Kara Young and Nicholas Braun balance their lovable, twisted weirdness both in dialogue and in exceptional physical comedy. They quickly transition from puking 13-year-olds to adults grieving dead parents. And yet, even with decades of mess and questionable coping mechanisms, you can’t help but root for them. The staging is simple, with costume changes happening right on stage as the characters shift across 30 years of their relationship (symbolic of emotional stripping-down, I guess). Either way, it works. I found myself audibly whispering “ohmygod” more than once, and repeatedly thinking “not sure I should have LOLed at that awkwardness.” There are some trigger-warnings that could come with the subjects of abuse and self harm in this show, but all said, it’s definitely worth heading downtown for another Kara Young gem of a performance. This is not only one of Red Bull Theater’s best productions, but possibly one of the best Shakespeare productions I’ve seen. The adaptation and direction make the plot exceptionally clear — it’s surprising to me that this is one of Shakespeare’s rarely performed plays. It makes a great case for it to be revived more often, if it can be given such a thrillingly sharp staging. Urie is the main reason this production succeeds so well. I regard him as one of our top stage actors, and this really cements it. He’s giving a compelling, clear, and complex performance — something that would be Tony-worthy if it was on Broadway. Escalation Time is a play that has grown into its fullest, most complete form—I would say 100% even. I don’t mean it’s the “best” play ever written; rather, it’s the kind of work where, as you watch it, not once do you think, “If only the plot/design/character work did …… it would be better.” It is the most perfect version of itself, the ideal realization of what it meant to be. The staging unfolds on a circular rug—an intimate two-person home—where the linear narrative traces the steady rise of conflict between lovers. True to its title, the story is an escalation: love that starts as a gentle, glowing ember gradually intensifies, combusts, and finally disappears in a burst, like fireworks collapsing into the dark. Desire, affection, support, tenderness—all of it is stripped bare in the final scene, tearing away the soft masks the characters wear and revealing the raw, fragile flesh underneath. Even though the play is anchored in contemporary themes, I believe its resonance extends far beyond the present moment. Read more

Connoly is a show with a lot of heart that examines heavy and important questions such as: how do we move forward after loss? what does it mean to care for those we love? how do we care for other and care for ourselves? The show struggles with pacing at times and the dialogue would go on without moving the plot forward. Ultimately, for me, this worked as more of a character study rather than a plot driven piece. I was particularly moved by Nikki Neuberger’s work as Connoly - she perfectly captured the teenage struggle and highs and lows of navigating complex mental health. See if you’re interested in themes of mental health/loss/suicidal ideation and are interested in how new works grapple with these issues. Read more
