Every one comes with the shopping list, the links, what to serve, exactly how to run the night, one thing that makes it memorable, and what it actually costs to host seven women. Because “just have people over!” is useless advice without a number attached to it.

A reminder before we start:

10. Charm Bar

Build charm necklaces or bracelets together.

Why it works: Zero skill required, instant result, endlessly personal, and everyone wears the party home. It’s the highest-delight-per-dollar idea in this entire post.

What to buy

How to host it

1. Sort the charms into a muffin tin or small dishes by category: letters, hearts, birthstones, weird ones. Presentation is 90% of a charm bar. A ziplock bag of charms is a chore; a tray of little bowls is a jewelry store.

2. Offer both necklace and bracelet chains and let people choose. Half your group will want one, half the other, and the choice makes it feel custom before they’ve picked a single charm.

3. Set a number: three charms each. Constraint again. Unlimited charms means twenty minutes of agonizing; three means everyone commits and explains why.

4. Demonstrate the jump ring twist once. You open it sideways, not by pulling it apart. Everyone gets this wrong the first time and it permanently deforms the ring.

5. Set up a mirror at one end of the table. 45–60 minutes total. This one is fast, so pair it with dinner.

What to serve

This is short enough to bolt onto a real dinner. Feed people properly first, then move to the charm table for dessert and a drink.

Make it memorable

Go around the table and have everyone say why she picked her three. That’s the whole night. You will learn more about your friends in that fifteen minutes than in a year of group texts.

11. Cake Decorating

Mini vintage cakes + piping bags + champagne.

Why it works: Buttercream is very forgiving, the vintage look is supposed to be over-the-top, and there is something specific and wonderful about a group of grown women getting competitive about piping.

I am a deeply creative person and I love an activity! Always have. Give me a table, a project, and seven women and I am the happiest person in the state of Georgia. Every idea on this list is one I have either hosted, been to, or planned down to the shopping list — they are tried, they are true, and they are so much fun.

Here is a thing I have noticed about women my age.

We will drive forty minutes to a restaurant, wait fifty minutes for a table, spend ninety dollars, shout across it for two hours, and hug in a parking lot at the end feeling like we still haven’t actually talked. And we will do this instead of the thing that is free, close, quiet, and better: having each other over.

I know why. Having people over feels like it requires a reason, and a clean house, and a plan. It doesn’t. It requires a table and something to do with your hands.

That last part is the trick, and it’s the reason this list exists. A girls’ night with an activity is a completely different animal than a girls’ night without one. The activity does the work of a good host — it gives everyone something to look at besides each other, it lets the quiet one participate without performing, it kills the awkward first twenty minutes, and it gives the whole thing a natural shape so nobody has to figure out when to leave.

So: nine ideas here, nine more next week, in the same order as the carousel. Every single one has the shopping list, the links, the actual instructions, what to serve, one thing that makes it memorable, and what it costs to host seven women — because “just have people over!” is useless advice without a number attached to it.

1. Floral Arranging

Bring in a florist or grab bundles of flowers and DIY it.

Why it works: Everyone leaves holding something beautiful they made, which means the party keeps existing on their kitchen counter for eight days.

What to buy

Option A — bring in a florist. Call a local flower shop or studio and ask if they do private workshops in-home. Most do and don’t advertise it well. Expect $75–125 per person, usually including all flowers, vessels, and tools. Ask two questions: does everyone take home an arrangement, and do they bring vessels or do I? Option B — DIY it:

• 8–10 mixed bunches of flowers: Trader Joe’s, Costco, or your grocery floral case · $60–80

How to host it

1. Two days before: If ordering wholesale, they arrive dry and thirsty. Cut stems and put them in water immediately. Grocery flowers can be bought the morning of.

2. Morning of: Strip all lower leaves off every stem. Do this yourself, in advance, while listening to something. It’s the tedious part and it’s what makes the night feel effortless.

3. Set the table as a bar, not a place setting. Flowers grouped by type down the middle. Vessels at one end. Snips and a trash bowl at the other. Cover the whole table in kraft paper or an old sheet.

4. Give one rule and one only: odd numbers, three heights. Tallest stems first for structure, then the focal flowers, then the little stuff to fill gaps. That’s the entire lesson.

5. Let them go. Ninety minutes, comfortably. Refill wine, don’t hover.

What to serve

Nothing that requires a fork — hands are wet and covered in stem. Cheese board, olives, good bread, a big bowl of grapes. Something sparkling.

Make it memorable

Have everyone swap one stem with the person to their left before they start, so a piece of someone else is in every arrangement. Then photograph all eight finished arrangements in a row on the counter and text the picture to the group.

Cost to host 7

DIY: ~$95–110. Cut it to $70 with jars you already own and grocery-store bunches. Florist-led: $600–1,000 for the group — split it and it’s $75–125 a head, which people will happily pay for a night like this.

2. Watercolor Night

Wine. Watercolors. Zero artistic talent required.

Why it works: Watercolor is the only paint that is prettier when you’re bad at it. Nobody can fail at this, which is exactly why grown women will actually try it.

What to buy

How to host it

1. Tape every sheet of paper to a placemat or piece of cardboard before anyone arrives. This makes the paper stop buckling and makes everything look framed and intentional. Ten minutes of prep, enormous payoff.

2. Pick one subject and announce it. Not “paint whatever.” Loose fall leaves, a single pear, abstract color washes, or everyone paints the same still life in the middle of the table. Constraint is a kindness.

3. Teach the two things that matter, in ninety seconds: more water = lighter, and let a layer dry before you put another on top of it. That’s it. That’s watercolor.

4. Two rounds. First painting is the throwaway where everyone learns the paint. Second one is the keeper. Say this out loud at the start so nobody agonizes over the first.

What to serve

Wine, obviously — it’s half the concept. Food that survives a paintbrush going through the middle of it: a big grazing board, nothing hot, nothing that needs your attention.

Make it memorable

Everyone signs and dates the back of their second painting, and you trade — each woman goes home with someone else’s. It reframes the whole night from “am I good at this” to “who am I making this for.”

Cost to host 7

~$70–85. Or $45 with the cheap paint sets, which honestly perform fine for one night.

3. Needlepoint Night

Pick a canvas, pour a drink + stitch while you catch up.

Why it works: It’s the slowest thing on this list, which means it’s the most talking. Needlepoint night is really a conversation with a canvas for cover.

What to buy

This is the one where each guest buys her own. Kits are $30–40 apiece and buying eight of them puts you at $280, which is not the assignment. Instead:

How to host it

1. Send the kit link in the invite, three weeks out. Say plainly: “Order this one, it’s about $35, bring it unopened.” Pre-work in the invitation is not rude — it’s what makes the night work.

2. Open the kits together. Genuinely fun. Everyone gets the same little unboxing moment at the same time.

3. Teach the continental stitch once, slowly, with everyone watching your hands. Then pull up a two-minute YouTube video on the TV and leave it looping so nobody has to ask you twice.

4. Light matters more than you think. Move every lamp in your house into that room. Overhead light alone will make everyone over 35 quietly miserable.

5. Three hours minimum. Nobody finishes. That’s the point — see below.

What to serve

Nothing greasy, nothing that leaves a film on your fingers — you’re handling wool. Little bites, a cheese board, tea and a cocktail. This is the one night where I’d put out something warm and sweet at the end.

Make it memorable

Make it a series, not a night. Nobody finishes a canvas in one sitting, so before anyone leaves, put the next date on the calendar. “Stitch club” is the easiest recurring thing I’ve ever seen a group of women commit to, because there’s an unfinished object sitting in everyone’s living room nagging them.

4. Mahjong Night

Hire a teacher and finally learn how to play.

Why it works: The sound alone. Also: it’s the rare activity that requires enough concentration to stop everyone from checking their phones, and it is deeply social — American mahjong is a game with a great deal of talking in it.

What to buy

Hire the teacher. Genuinely. A good instructor gets eight beginners playing in one evening, which is something you cannot do from a book.

How to host it

1. Book the teacher first, then pick the date around her. Good instructors are booked out in the fall — Liz and Isabel especially. Everything else on this list you can pull together in a week; this one you can’t.

2. If you’re teaching it yourself: get the card first and read it before the night. Non-negotiable, about an hour of your life. You don’t have to be good — you have to be the one who knows what the card is.

3. Two tables of four. Eight people = two games. This is one of the few ideas here that’s actually better split up. Confirm your teacher is comfortable running two tables.

4. Do a teaching round with all hands face up. No scoring, no stakes, everyone can see everyone’s tiles, you talk through what you’d do. Twenty minutes. Then play for real.

5. Play the Charleston slowly the first time — the passing sequence is the part that confuses everyone, and it’s the part that makes it fun once it clicks.

6. Eat before you start. You won’t want to stop once the tiles are out.

What to serve

One-handed food only, and nothing that leaves a film on your fingers — you are handling other people’s tiles all night. Dumplings, skewers, little sandwiches. Put it on a side table, not the game table.

Make it memorable

Make it monthly and name the group. Mahjong is the single most self-sustaining idea on this list — it has been running in groups of women for a century for a reason. Also: a dollar-store trophy that lives at the winner’s house until next month is worth more than it costs by a factor of about a thousand.

5. Enneagram Dinner

Everyone takes the test beforehand. Discuss over dinner.

Why it works: It’s a structured excuse for the conversation everyone actually wants to have. Also the cheapest idea on this list.

What to buy

How to host it

1. Everyone takes the test a week ahead and texts you her number. You need this in advance — the test takes twenty minutes and doing it at the table kills the momentum.

2. Print the one-page summary for every type represented and put it at that person’s seat.

3. Go around the table with three questions, one at a time, everyone answers before you move on: - What does your type say your core fear is — and is it right? - What’s the thing you do under stress that you’d never admit at brunch? - What do you need from us that you’ve never asked for?

4. Question three is the one. Do not rush it. That’s the whole dinner.

5. Assign someone as the timekeeper so no single person takes the night. Five minutes each, genuinely enforced, and it works.

What to serve

A real sit-down dinner — this is the one where the table matters. One big braise or a pot of something, salad, bread, candles, a tablecloth. Nothing that requires you to get up.

Make it memorable

Type-appropriate potluck assignments in the invitation. The 1 brings the thing that requires precision. The 2 brings enough for twenty people. The 7 brings the cocktail. The 5 brings something researched. The 9 brings whatever’s easiest and everyone agrees it’s the best thing on the table. It’s funny before anyone walks in the door.

Cost to host 7

~$50–70, and less if it’s a real potluck.

6. Candle Making

Create your own signature fall scent.

Why it works: It smells incredible for four hours and everyone leaves with a hostess gift for someone else. Very high output-to-effort ratio.

What to buy

• Kitchen scale + thermometer: You may own these — otherwise a digital candy thermometer with a pot clip · $0–18 For a fall scent library, buy across three families: something warm (vanilla, tonka, amber), something spiced (cardamom, clove, black pepper), something woody or green (cedar, fig, teak). That’s what lets people actually build a signature scent instead of picking one bottle.

How to host it

1. Melt the wax yourself, in advance and in bulk. Do not have eight women managing eight melting pots. One big pot of melted wax on low, and you portion it out. This is the single decision that makes candle night easy instead of chaotic.

2. Set up a scent bar. Line up the fragrance oils with little strips of cardstock for smelling. Let everyone blend two or three and write her recipe on a card.

3. Wick and secure the vessels ahead of time — glue dot at the bottom, wick centered with a clothespin across the top. All eight, done before anyone arrives.

4. Pour at about 135°F. Then — and this is the actual rule — do not move them. They sit on the counter overnight. Everyone comes back for theirs, or you deliver them, which gives you a second small hit of the friendship a week later.

5. Cure time is real. Tell people the candle will smell twice as strong in two weeks. Otherwise they’ll light it that night and be underwhelmed.

What to serve

Keep the food out of the room — competing smells ruin the scent bar. Feed everyone first in the kitchen, then move to the candle table with drinks only. Something apple or bourbon-ish is right.

Make it memorable

Printed labels with a blank line for the scent name. Everyone names her candle, and the names get read aloud. You will get one earnest one, one filthy one, and one that becomes an inside joke for a year.

Cost to host 7

~$110–140 for the real version with good fragrance. ~$45 with the budget kit and one shared scent.

7. Yoga + Wine

Yoga first. Wine + grazing board after.

Why it works: It’s the only idea here that ends with everyone lying on the floor in the dark for five minutes, and then eating. That sequence — effort, stillness, wine — is unreasonably bonding.

What to buy

• Private group instructor, 60 min at your house: Ask a studio you already go to, or a teacher friend. $100–175 for the group · $100–175

• Free version: A 45-min gentle flow on YouTube, cast to your TV · $0

• Mats — everyone brings her own: $0

How to host it

1. Clear one room completely. Furniture out, not pushed to the side. Eight mats need about 15×15 feet. Measure it before you commit to the guest list.

2. Book gentle, not challenging. The point is not fitness. Tell the instructor explicitly: slow, restorative, lots of floor, no inversions, nobody here is trying to prove anything. A good teacher will be relieved you said it.

3. Dim everything and use one playlist. Overhead lights off, lamps and candles only.

4. Build the grazing board before class and cover it. You want to walk out of savasana into food already on the table. Nothing that needs cooking, nothing that needs you.

5. Phones in a basket by the door. This is the one idea on this list where I’d actually insist.

What to serve

A big grazing board and good wine, in the same room, floor-level if you want. Cheeses, cured meat, honey, marcona almonds, figs, dark chocolate, good crackers. Do not make people transition to a dining table in a formal way — the horizontal, softened, post-savasana state is the entire prize and a dining chair breaks it.

Make it memorable

Ask the instructor to dedicate the practice and go around the room — each woman says one word for what she’s carrying right now. Eight words, no discussion, then you start. It takes ninety seconds and it changes the temperature of the room for the rest of the night.

Cost to host 7

~$180–220 with a paid instructor (split it — $25 a head and it’s nothing). ~$80 with YouTube and a good board.

8. Wine Tasting

Pick a region, add pairings + make it a blind tasting.

Why it works: It’s the lowest-effort idea on this list that still feels like an event, because every guest brings the main expense. And blind tasting is levelling — the woman who talks about wine the most is rarely the one who wins.

What to buy

• The wine — each guest brings one bottle from the region, $15–25: Assigned in the invitation · $0 to you

• Numbered tasting bags + scorecards: Blind wine tasting kit with bags + scorecards or scorecards only · $15–30

• Brown paper bags + rubber bands (free version): Grocery · $3

• Extra glasses — 2 per person is ideal: Borrow or thrift · $0–20

How to host it

1. Pick a region and make it the assignment. “One Willamette Valley Pinot under $25.” “One Rioja.” “Anything from Portugal.” A region is what turns eight random bottles into a comparison — and it means the pairings can match, which is where this gets good.

2. Bag and number them as people walk in, out of sight. Assign one person as the keeper of the key — ideally someone who is not tasting, or at minimum someone trustworthy.

3. Run it in a specific order: look, swirl, smell, sip, score. Give people the vocabulary on the card so nobody has to invent it. Scoring on a 1–10 with a one-word note is enough.

4. Pair on purpose. Put one food with each wine and ask the real question: did the pairing make either one better? That’s the part people have never actually done deliberately and it’s the part they remember.

5. Reveal at the end, cheapest bottle last. The cheap bottle wins often enough to be delightful.

What to serve

Pair to the region and it does half the work for you. Spain: manchego, jamón, marcona almonds, olives. Italy: parmigiano, prosciutto, focaccia, aged balsamic. France: brie, baguette, cornichons, pâté. Portugal: aged cheese, quince paste, tinned fish. Oregon/California: goat cheese, hazelnuts, fresh fruit.

Make it memorable

Everybody guesses the price of each bottle alongside the score. Then reveal both. The gap between what people paid and what people liked is the single most entertaining data set you will generate all fall.

Cost to host 7

~$70–90 (you’re buying food and the kit; guests bring the wine). This is the best value on the list.

9. Sushi Making

DIY hand rolls or bring in someone to teach you.

Why it works: Hand rolls are the smart version of this. Rolled maki is a skill; a temaki cone is assembly — which means nobody fails, the food comes out fast and hot, and everyone eats standing up in the kitchen, which is where every good party ends up anyway.

What to buy

Option A — hire someone. Search “private sushi class at home” plus your city, or ask at a sushi restaurant you already like; a lot of chefs do this on their off nights. Expect $75–150 per person, usually including all the fish. Ask what they bring and what you supply.

Option B — hand rolls at home (my recommendation):

• Sashimi-grade salmon + tuna, ~2 lb total: Good fish counter or Asian market — call ahead · $60–90

How to host it

1. Make the rice in the afternoon, yourself, and make more than you think. 3 lb dry. Season it while hot (½ cup rice vinegar + ¼ cup sugar + 1 tbsp salt per 6 cups cooked rice, folded in with a flat spoon, fanned as you go). Let it come to room temperature. Cold rice will not stick and warm rice will not hold. This is the whole difference between a good sushi night and a frustrating one.

2. Cut everything into matchsticks in advance. Every filling, every vegetable, in bowls. Slice the fish into ¼-inch strips and keep it on ice until the moment you start.

3. Hand rolls: cut the nori into halves and keep them in a sealed bag until the second you use them. Nori goes soft in about four minutes in a normal kitchen, and a soft cone is a sad cone.

4. Teach the cone in twenty seconds: half sheet of nori shiny-side down in your palm, a small scoop of rice on the left third, fillings on the diagonal, then roll the bottom-left corner up and over into an ice cream cone shape. Eat immediately, standing up.

5. Bowl of water with a splash of vinegar at each station for hands. This is the trick nobody tells you, and it’s why your rice keeps gluing itself to your fingers.

6. If you also want maki: nori shiny-side down, thin rice over ¾ leaving a bare inch at the top, fillings a third of the way up, roll away from you using the mat, seal the bare edge with a wet finger. Wet the knife between every single cut.

What to serve

The sushi is dinner — but add miso soup, edamame, and a cucumber sunomono so people have something while the first cones are being built. Cold beer, sake, or a very dry sparkling.

Make it memorable

Signature roll contest. Each person makes one, names it, and plates it. Then everyone tastes all eight and votes. Winner picks the theme of the next gathering.

THE ELEVEN THINGS THAT MAKE ANY OF THESE WORK

Whatever you pick — from this half or the next one — this part doesn’t change.

1. Send the invitation three weeks out, with the date and the ask in the first two lines. Not “would anyone be interested in maybe.” A date, a time, and what to bring.

2. Cap it at eight. Above eight the table splits into two conversations and the night stops being one thing.

3. Do all the prep that is boring. Strip the leaves, cut the stems, melt the wax, cook the rice. Guests should arrive to a project that is ready to be fun, not one that is ready to be set up.

4. Cover the table. Kraft paper, an old sheet, a dropcloth. The second the table is covered, everyone relaxes, because now nothing can be ruined.

5. Have one job for the person who arrives early, because someone always does and she will feel better with something in her hands.

6. Feed people before the activity, not after. Hungry women are bad at crafts.

7. One rule, said out loud, once. Every activity above has exactly one instruction that matters. Say it clearly, then stop teaching.

8. Put a wastebasket on the floor by the table. Sounds trivial. It is the difference between a table you can work on and a table you can’t.

9. Take one photo of everyone’s hands working, and one of everyone’s faces at the end. Nobody takes the hands one. It’s always the better picture.

10. Set an end time in the invitation and then don’t enforce it. People stay longer when they know they’re allowed to leave.

11. Before anyone goes home, put the next one on the calendar. This is the whole thing. A great night that doesn’t get repeated was a nice evening. A pretty good night that becomes the second Thursday of every month changes your actual life.

I had shot two sessions that day and had six hours of production waiting on my desk. Elise had a meet that weekend. Lyon had a test he had not mentioned. There was laundry in the washer that needed to be run again. Kyu was texting from the car, deep in his own busiest stretch, asking what was for dinner.

How did we get here again?

That was the part that got me. Not that it was hard. Fall is hard. It was the same hard as the year before. Same permission slip, same forgotten laundry, same 9:40pm kitchen.

We had not gotten worse at fall. We had just never sat down and decided how it was going to work.

So the next August, we sat down first. One meeting, the weekend before school, the four of us at the table. We call it the Season Opener, and it’s a total game changer.

Here is exactly how I run it.

Why we actually do this

Fall is my busiest season of the year. September through November is when families book, when the light is good, when everyone wants portraits before the holidays. It is Kyu’s heaviest stretch too. Our two hardest work seasons land in the same twelve weeks, on top of a school year and a competition schedule.

So I am not running this meeting to raise impressive children. I am running it because for three months I need to put my head down and work, and the house still has to function while I do.

Which means my kids have to help. Not as a character building exercise. They have to help because this family has four people in it and in the fall two of them are underwater.

I used to be careful about that. I did not want them carrying the weight of what we do. Then I noticed that protecting them from it was not making them feel light. It was making them feel like guests.

Kids know when they are being given a pretend job. They also know when the thing they are doing actually matters. Teenagers are starving to be needed and almost nobody asks them for anything real.

So this is not a scheduling meeting. It is the meeting where I tell my kids the truth about the next three months and let them decide what they will carry.

They have never once let me down in that conversation.

Before anybody sits down

When. The weekend before school starts. Not the night before, when everyone is anxious. Not three weeks early, when the schedule is still theoretical.

Where. The kitchen table, not the couch. On the couch people melt. At a table people sit up and write things down.

How long. Sixty minutes, said out loud at the start. The fastest way to never do this again is to run it for three hours the first time.

Food. Always. Out before we start, not after.

Phones. In a basket. Mine too.

Paper. A page for each kid, one for me and Kyu, one family page in the middle of the table. What your kid writes in their own handwriting and signs is a different object than what you typed for them.

Who runs it. I do. Kyu is a participant, not a co host. If both parents run the meeting, the kids are the audience.

The hour:

A third of the hour goes to Part 3. If you run behind, take it out of Part 4. Never out of Part 3.

Four rules, said at the start:

1. Kids answer first, every round.

2. Parents do not fix or negotiate during a round. Write it down, come back to it.

3. Nobody leaves without picking their own three things.

4. It ends with a date on the calendar.

I’ve said that sentence to three different moms in the last month, and every single one of them just nodded. Nobody asked me to explain it. They already knew.

Elise starts middle school in a few days. I’ve bought the folders and the locker shelf and the required gym clothes, but that’s not what’s kept me up at night. What’s kept me up is everything nobody puts on the supply list. The friend group that might not survive the summer. The group chat she’s not in yet, that already has rules she doesn’t know. The version of herself she’s about to build in a building where nobody remembers who she was in third grade.

So before I get into the six conversations I’m actually having with her, I want to tell you why I’m having them. Because other moms told me their stories first, and I haven’t stopped thinking about them since.

But somewhere in the middle of writing it out, the real reason surfaced and took over. Every time we swoop in and do something for our kids that they could be learning to do for themselves, we don’t just save them a few minutes. We quietly steal a rep. And without the reps, they don’t build the skill. Without the skill, their confidence takes a hit they don’t even have language for yet. And without confidence, independence stalls out at exactly the moment they need it most, walking into a new classroom, a new team, a new phase of their own life.

Back to school is a strange kind of gift in this way. The rhythm of mornings and afternoons, the same routine repeating five days a week, gives us dozens of small, low stakes chances to practice. Nobody masters a skill from one conversation. They master it from doing it Tuesday, and then again Wednesday, and then again the following Tuesday, until one day it’s just who they are.

So here is the full list, every skill from my three part Instagram series, gathered in one place, broken down by age. Take what applies to your kids right now, skip the rest, and don’t worry about doing it perfectly. This isn’t a test. It’s a rhythm.

Ages 5 to 7: The Foundational Years

At this age, we’re not chasing independence for its own sake. We’re building the physical habits and the felt sense of “I can do this” that everything later gets stacked on top of.

1. Memorize both parents’ phone numbers. I want to be clear that this one isn’t about convenience or confidence building the way the rest of this list is. It’s about safety, full stop. Before anything else, a five, six, or seven year old should be able to recite both parents’ phone numbers from memory, no app, no contact list, no assuming someone else will have the answer. Practice it like a song until it’s automatic.

2. Unpack their backpack and put everything in its spot. Lunchbox to the counter, folders and take home papers where they belong, shoes and coat and backpack in the same spot every single day. This is executive functioning in its earliest form, a consistent physical routine that teaches the brain that arriving home means resetting. Set up a designated landing spot once, and there’s no decision making left for them to avoid.

3. Make a simple snack solo. Pouring cereal, spreading butter on toast, peeling a string cheese, assembling crackers and cheese. Keep the ingredients at kid height so the barrier to entry is physical, not just permission based.

4. Greet a teacher or adult by name, with eye contact. This is a rehearsed skill, not an instinct. Practice the script at home, something like “Good morning, Ms. Johnson!”, the same way you’d practice anything else you wanted them to be good at.

5. Ask for help using words, not just body language. “Can you help me with this?” instead of a whine, a shrug, or a blank stare in someone’s direction. This is the earliest seed of self advocacy, and it matters far more in a classroom of twenty kids than it does at home.

6. Follow a two step direction without a reminder. “Put your shoes away, then wash your hands.” If they can hold two steps in their head and execute both without a nudge, they’re ready for the rhythm of a classroom.

7. Clean up one area completely before moving to the next. Toys away before snack, snack cleaned up before screen time. This is where “putting things away” stops being a chore you assign and starts being an actual executive function skill they own.

Silence. My son looked at me like I’d asked him what year it was.

I kept going. “Is it the number on the left or the whole thing? Do I move the decimal or multiply first?” I was not acting confused. I was acting gone. My husband, who is genuinely a sharp guy, decided in that moment his brain had also stopped working. He squinted at the folder like it was written in a language he used to know.

Our kids looked at each other. Then Elise, who is twelve, grabbed the folder out of my hand, did the math out loud, and told us exactly what to leave. Lyon, fifteen, checked her work. Neither of them asked why their parents had suddenly forgotten fifth grade math. They just did it. Because someone had to.

That was the whole trip, actually. Not one moment. A strategy.

The more capable you are, the more you’ll do. And the less they’ll learn.

Here’s the thing I know for a fact, because I lived it. I was flying internationally by myself at Lyon and Elise’s age. Nobody drove me to the gate. Nobody translated the customs form. I figured it out because I had to, because the adults around me were not available to do it for me. My kids are capable of the same thing. I know because I was them. The only difference is whether I get out of the way long enough to let them prove it.

So on this trip, my job was not to be the most helpful mother in Maui. My job was to be the most incompetent one. I forgot how English worked. I forgot how math worked. I forgot how maps worked. I turned into a woman who apparently could not function outside her own driveway, and it was, without question, the best parenting I did all year.

Here is what that actually looked like, and what it taught them.

1. Money isn’t magic, it’s just math you’re avoiding

The restaurant bit wasn’t a one-off. I do this everywhere. Somebody has to add the tip, split a bill three ways, or figure out if the “deal” at the shave ice stand is actually a deal. I go blank on purpose, every single time. My husband does the same thing, and it works better as a tag team because the kids can’t appeal to the other parent for a rescue. Both adults are suddenly terrible at arithmetic.

What I’ve noticed is that the first few times, they’re annoyed. By day three, they’re just doing it without the eye roll, because they’ve realized nobody else is going to.

2. Use your own voice, every time, starting embarrassingly young

My kids have ordered their own food since they were six and seven years old. Not “picked what they wanted and pointed.” Ordered. Talked to the server. Said please. Handled it when the kitchen got their order wrong.

This one isn’t new to Maui, it’s just policy in our family, and I bring it up because it’s the lesson that makes all the other ones possible. A kid who has been talking to strangers on his own behalf since first grade does not freeze up at a rental car counter or a hotel front desk. He’s had years of practice being the one who speaks.

3. You don’t need me to understand the world for you

In every airport, I do the same bit. I act like I can’t read English. I’ll turn to my kids and ask, in another language, how we get to the gate. I’m dead serious about the performance. Confused, apologetic, a woman abroad in her own country.

They’ve been navigating airports since they could read, which in our house happened early, so this one’s rarely a real stretch for them anymore. But watching Lyon scan a departures board and just start walking, no hesitation, no checking if I approve of the direction, is the whole point of this essay in one image. He didn’t need a translator. He needed a mother who stopped pretending to be his.

There’s real research on this, by the way, not just my own theory. Kids in immigrant families who translate for their parents, who have to be the ones who understand the world when the adults can’t, come out of it with more confidence and sharper problem solving, not less. We treat “figuring it out yourself” like a hardship we should protect our kids from. It’s actually one of the fastest paths to competence there is.

4. A budget is freedom, not a punishment

I gave each of them a hundred dollars at the start of the trip. Theirs. No strings, no “ask me first,” no running total I was keeping in my head to correct them later. Spend it on shave ice every day and have nothing left by Wednesday? That’s a decision, and it’s yours to live with.

What actually happened is more interesting than what I expected. They stopped asking me to buy them things. All the “can I get this” that usually background-hums through a family vacation just went quiet, because the answer was already in their own pocket. A hundred dollars taught them more about trade-offs than I could have lectured them into in a year.

5. Things will go wrong. That’s the entire point of going.

We got lost. We were late to things. We got mildly ripped off by someone who could clearly spot a tourist a mile away. This happens basically every trip we take, and I used to think of it as the cost of travel, the stuff you tolerate to get to the good parts.

I don’t think that anymore. The going-wrong isn’t the tax on the trip. It’s the trip. It’s the only part where we’re actually outside our comfort zone together, which means it’s the only part where we’re actually learning anything. A vacation with zero hiccups is just an expensive way to sit somewhere warmer than home. The wrong turns are where the kids and I figured it out side by side, and where I learned to sit on my hands a beat longer than felt natural.

6. Boredom is where the bonding actually happens

Lines. Layovers. The long stretch of highway between one side of the island and the other. We are bored constantly on trips like this, standing around waiting for something, and I’ve stopped seeing that as dead time.

That’s when the real conversations happen. Not the ones I schedule, the ones that show up because there’s nothing else to do but talk to each other. My kids have gotten genuinely good at entertaining themselves and each other in the gaps, and it turns out those gaps are where a lot of the actual closeness gets built. Not the luau. The line for the luau.

Here’s the part nobody puts on the postcard. Family travel crams an insane amount of togetherness into a few days. No school to break up the hours, no separate schedules to retreat to, just all of us, in it, together. You see each other at your best and your worst. They test us. We test our own patience. And that friction, all that forced proximity, is exactly what creates the opening to teach them something real about life. Not despite the mess. Because of it. That’s why we do it.

Here’s what I want the moms reading this to sit with. Somewhere along the way we started treating our own competence as the gift we give our kids. Look how well I planned this trip. Look how smoothly it went. Look how nothing ever goes wrong on my watch.

I think we’ve had it backwards. The gift isn’t how well I handle things. It’s how convincingly I can step out of the way while they handle things themselves. Strong roots don’t mean I hold the branch forever. They mean I built something sturdy enough that letting go doesn’t feel like a risk, it feels like the plan working.

My kids don’t know they’re being taught anything on these trips. They think their mother is just a little bit hopeless with maps and menus and mental math. Good. Let them think that. It’s the most useful lie I tell all year.

Here’s the thing though: the girls love it. Not despite the structure, because of it. Some of them have come back every single year from age 8 to 12, never missing a summer. When I ask them what their favorite week of the year is, camp wins, over and over.

So let me walk you through the five things we do that raise eyebrows, and why I think they’re the actual reason this works.

1. Every girl names her superpower on day one

Not “everyone’s a winner.” Not a sticker for showing up. On day one, each girl has to sit with the question: what is my specific thing? She names it out loud, in front of the group. It’s uncomfortable for some of them. That discomfort is the point, self knowledge doesn’t come from being told you’re great at everything. It comes from claiming one true thing about yourself and having to live inside that claim all week.

I think about one girl in particular, nine years old, and she didn’t know a single other camper walking in. She reminded me so much of myself at that age it was almost unsettling. Quiet. Watching everyone else from the edge of the group. When it came time to name her superpower on day one, she could barely get the words out above a whisper.

By day two, she was still hanging back, but she was watching more closely, laughing at things other girls said. By day three, she offered an idea in her small group, unprompted. By day four, she was the one pulling a newer, quieter girl into a conversation. And by day five, graduation day, she stood up in front of the entire camp and spoke. Not whispered. Spoke. Her mom cried. I cried. She left camp a different girl than the one who walked in five days earlier, and the only thing that had changed was that she’d been given five days of being seen, expected to participate, and never let off the hook for hiding.

2. I set almost militant expectations, and I hold the line

Day one, I tell them exactly what I expect. Bluntly. No softening it. And then I hold every single girl to it, all week, even when it’s uncomfortable to watch. Chaos and poor behavior don’t get smoothed over for anyone’s comfort, mine, theirs, or their parents’. Because unchecked chaos ruins the week for the whole group, and structure is what lets everyone else relax into themselves.

That’s the part people miss when they hear “militant” and assume it’s harsh for harshness’s sake. It’s not. High standards, especially around kindness and inclusion, are what make it safe to try something hard in front of your peers. Calm doesn’t come from low expectations. It comes from everyone knowing exactly where the line is.

I had a girl one summer who kept undercutting other campers during exercises, little comments, eye rolls, the kind of thing that chips away at a kid who’s already nervous to try. I pulled her aside and told her directly: if she couldn’t participate and cheer on her fellow campers, this wasn’t the right fit for her, and I’d call her mom to arrange a refund and send her home.

That’s not a comfortable conversation to have with an 8 to 12 year old. It’s an even less comfortable one to have with her mother. But every other girl in that group was watching to see whether unkindness would cost anything. It did. And the standard held for the rest of the week.

3. We deliberately put them through hard things, and tell them to push through

No rescuing at the first tear or the first “I can’t.” We put them in front of something genuinely difficult, and instead of lowering the bar, we stand next to them while they climb it. Grit isn’t a lecture topic here. It’s a physical, felt experience of I didn’t think I could do that, and I just did.

I think this is the piece missing from a lot of childhood right now. We’ve gotten so good at clearing the path that kids rarely get the chance to find out what they’re capable of under real pressure. One hard week can teach a kid more about her own capacity than a year of being protected from difficulty.

This is where my signature curriculum, Girl Pow(Her), lives. Over two full days, I teach the girls the soft skills to walk into a room, meet people, and make the case for why they belong there, and the centerpiece is a shark tank style pitch in front of the group. Most of them are terrified of it.

One girl told me flatly: she couldn’t do it. Couldn’t stand up and pitch her idea in front of everyone. So we worked with her privately, small rehearsals in front of just one or two other girls at first, coaching on tone, pacing, eye contact. I told her to stop thinking of it as a performance: “Pretend you’re asking your mom if you can have more money to shop at Target.” Just a conversation with people who already like you.

Slowly, session by session, she came out of her shell. You could actually watch the confidence building up behind her eyes before it broke through. By the time she gave her pitch, it wasn’t the same girl who’d told me she couldn’t do it 48 hours earlier. Watching that shift happen in real time is why I keep the pitch in the curriculum, no matter how many girls tell me on day one that they’re scared of it.

4. We tell them they’re not the center of the universe

Radical, I know. In a world engineered to tell kids their feelings are the most important data point in any room, we spend the week building a civic heart, serving others before self. It’s not an add on value; it’s core to how we run every activity. Somebody else’s comfort matters. Somebody else’s turn matters.

Watching a girl notice someone left out and move toward her without being told, that’s the whole camp working exactly as intended.

This is the piece I watch build all week, and it starts with homework, actual homework, assigned on day one. I tell every girl: tonight, open your eyes and notice everything your parents or caregivers do for you. Write it down. Then find a way to serve them back. If they’re making dinner, ask, “Can I set the table?” or “Can I clean up after we eat?” I push them to get creative with it. And the next morning, we report back and talk through what they noticed and what they did.

That one assignment shifts something. By mid week, girls are looking for ways to serve each other without being asked, covering for a teammate, cheering loudest for the girl who’s struggling, noticing who’s been left out.

The story that still gets me: one of our campers came back as a 17 year old to build “Creativity Camp Cares”, a nonprofit arm of camp where the girls create art together, auction it off, and send every dollar to a charity she chooses. She’d always had a servant’s heart, even as a young camper. But watching her choose to come back and build something that put that heart to work with the current campers, full circle, teaching the next group of girls what she’d learned herself, was one of the most meaningful things I’ve witnessed in twenty years of doing this.

5. I go first with my own failure

On day one, before I ask anything hard of them, I tell them who I was at their age: an introverted, scared kid who had no idea how to connect with other people. Not a polished, “look how far I’ve come” story, the real, unfinished, awkward middle of it.

I do this because confidence isn’t built by watching someone who has it all figured out. It’s built by watching someone who clearly didn’t, and made it through anyway. If I want them to fail in front of their peers without flinching, I have to show them what that looks like first.

None of this is soft. None of it is easy to watch as a parent dropping your daughter off for a week. But -

That’s the whole bet: hold the standard high enough, and every girl inside it finds out she’s more capable than she knew. That’s why they come back. That’s why the waitlist keeps growing. And that’s the only kind of “controversial” I’m interested in.

One more thing, because I don’t want any of this to sound cold. Underneath all of it, we are a relentlessly positive environment. My team pours into these girls all week, over and over, until they know their worth. We see their superpower before they see it themselves, and we tell them, again and again, until they own it. We praise them. We high five them. We champion them loudly and often, long before they believe it on their own.

That’s actually where the confidence comes from. Not the high standards alone, and not the hard challenges alone. It’s high expectations held inside an environment where a girl is told, constantly and specifically, who she already is, until one day she believes it too.

We actually track this. Every week, we name a Camper of the Week, chosen for things like a servant’s heart, active listening, and putting others before self. The qualities we’re building all week aren’t abstract ideals we hope show up eventually. They’re specific enough to spot in real time, and specific enough to praise out loud in front of the whole group.

Not a metaphor. An actual cave, outside a small village in Taiwan, in November of 1944. American bombers were flying over his hometown that day. Sirens went off. Everyone in the village ran for shelter. My grandmother went into labor in the middle of it, and delivered him there, underground, while the war carried on overhead.

Four decades later, I was born in a hospital in Georgia, in a country that had once dropped those bombs, to two parents who crossed oceans to build a life inside it. That distance, from a cave in Formosa to a delivery room in the American South, is the whole story of how I got to be who I am.

Two Kids Who Left Home With Nothing

My father grew up with thirty people under one roof. Seven siblings, two of them adopted, all fed by the women of the house taking turns at the stove. He left that home at thirteen to apprentice in Taipei, and slept on the door of a closet because there was no bed for him. He was up at six every morning to open the shop, and worked until eleven most nights, with three days off a year. His grandfather visited him once in Taipei, saw the conditions he was living in, and shouted at his boss for treating his grandson that way. His boss, embarrassed, took the old man out for noodles and a Coca-Cola. It was the only time his grandfather ever left the village to see him.

My father spent his teenage years and twenties doing whatever work he could find. He killed chickens before sunrise. He dug coal for a hundred yen a day until a wire scratched his leg and it swelled up. He got fired once, at nineteen, for refusing to copy a competitor’s product, because even then, some things mattered more to him than the job. He left Taiwan for Japan at twenty five, learned to cook there, and discovered almost by accident that he was good at it. He left Japan for New York at twenty nine.

He landed in New York three days before Christmas, in cold his body had never felt before. A friend picked him up and gave him his own jacket. His first job was washing dishes by hand for four hundred dollars a month, in a kitchen where his coworker was stabbed by a robber one night. He lasted three more days there. Not long after, a woman from Tallahassee named Lucy met him while she was up shopping for groceries, offered him work, and told him she would help him get a green card. He bought a bus ticket south the next week.

My mother’s road was quieter, but no less brave. She left Hong Kong on her own to come here for an education, landed at Florida State, and built a life for herself thousands of miles from anyone she knew, long before she gave a single thought to a husband. She met my father at a Chinese New Year gathering hosted by the local Chinese Association. She was checking members in at the door. He noticed her legs before he noticed anything else, following advice his own grandfather had once given him. She spoke broken Mandarin. He fell for her anyway.

They married in 1978 and moved to Valdosta, Georgia, a small Southern town neither of them had any real reason to choose, except that it was where the work was. My father opened a restaurant there called China Garden. It burned down within two years. He rebuilt it, bigger than before, because he had employees counting on him and no time to grieve what was lost.

The Cost Underneath the Gratitude

People in Valdosta said, out loud, what is this crazy Chinese man building in our city. My father built it anyway. That one restaurant became nineteen, spread across three states, run by a man with no formal education and no map for any of it, only the same instinct that had carried him through a closet bedroom in Taipei and a dish pit in New York.

My parents were deeply grateful for what this country gave them. They said so, and they meant it. And in the same breath, they were reminded, constantly, that they did not quite belong here. Gratitude and grievance lived in the same house in our family, and it took me most of my life to understand that both were allowed to be true at once.

We were one of the only Asian families in that town. My father built something the whole city ate at and admired, and was still spoken about as an outsider while he did it. That contradiction was just the weather we grew up in. Nobody explained it to us. We just learned to feel it.

Growing Up the Only Ones in Town

I started working at China Garden when I was five years old, peeling shrimp in the kitchen to keep me out of trouble. By high school, I was running the front register on Friday nights while my classmates were at the football game. I did not mind missing the games. China Garden was where the people who looked like me were. Valdosta, most nights, was not.

I felt like a second class citizen more than once growing up there, and there were years I wished, plainly, that I looked like everyone else. I did not have the language for what that feeling was at the time. I only knew that my family stood out in a town that did not reward standing out, and that my father kept building anyway, in plain sight, whether the town approved or not.

What They Taught Me About Being American

Ambition can be a love language, even when it never says the words. My father rarely told us he loved us out loud. He fed us instead, and he built us a life that did not exist for him anywhere else. His drive was not separate from his love for our family. It was how he expressed it, even when it cost him time with us he never got back. I understand that trade now in a way I could not as a kid standing at the register wishing he would come home earlier.

Belonging is built, not waited for. Nobody in Valdosta handed my parents a welcome. They built a restaurant that fed the whole city. They built a community of people who understood them when the town did not. My father did not wait for permission to belong somewhere. He built the place himself, then built sixteen more.

Roots and wings were never in competition. Knowing exactly where my family came from, the cave, the closet, the coal mine, the boat and the bus, did not make me less American. It made my version of American fuller. I did not have to choose between the two. I got to carry both.

Gratitude does not require an easy story. My parents’ love for this country sat right next to real pain, and both were true at the same time. I spent years thinking gratitude meant not naming what was hard. I know now those two things were never in conflict. My parents lived that truth quietly, every day they kept the restaurant open. I am only now learning to say it out loud.

From the Eyes of an American Born Daughter

Lyon and Elise are growing up in a different world than the one I grew up in. They are not the only ones of anything in their classrooms. Nobody has ever asked them what they really are. They are inheriting an American Dream that a man born in a cave, and a woman who crossed an ocean for a degree, decided to bet everything on, one generation before them.

I try to give my kids both halves of what I was given. The roots, so they know exactly where their grit comes from. And the wings, so they never once wonder if there is room here for them to build whatever they want. That is the whole of what I am trying to pass down. Strong roots. Open wings. The same lifelong connection my parents built for me, in a town that did not always make it easy, and never once stopped believing it was worth it.

The Ones Who Get to Tell It

My father is in his eighties now. Some days he cannot remember which restaurant came first, or what year the fire was. But he remembers the cave. He remembers the cold in New York. He remembers my mother’s legs at that Chinese New Year gathering, fifty years later, like it happened last week.

One day I will be the only one left who remembers the rest of it. So I write it down. Not because it is remarkable, though I think it is, but because it is mine to carry now. A cave in Taiwan. A boat, then a bus, then a town that did not want him there. A restaurant that burned and came back bigger. That is not just my father’s story anymore. It is the first chapter of mine, and it will be the first chapter of Lyon’s and Elise’s, whether they know it yet or not.

This is the whole reason I write here every week. Not to hand you a perfect system, but to hand you the real story underneath it, the one with the cave and the closet and the fire in it, so you can go find the one underneath yours. Every family is building something. Most of us just never stop to write it down.

My kids do better with something visual. Something they can check off with their own hand and see progress on, instead of me repeating myself for the fifth time that day.

So I made a checklist.

Not a cute one I found on Pinterest that lasted three days. A real one, built around what my actual kids are actually supposed to do, with a place to write what they read and what they learned on Khan Academy, checkboxes for every day of the week, and a sign-off box for me to confirm before I hand over their $25.

We print a new one every Sunday. It takes 30 seconds. The nagging has dropped dramatically.

This is not just about clean rooms.

Here is what I know to be true as a Crane Mother: my job is not to raise kids who are good at being children. My job is to raise humans who are good at life.

Chores are not a punishment in our house. They are training.

Research out of Cornell tracked nearly 10,000 kids from kindergarten into third grade and found that children who did regular chores scored significantly higher in academic ability, peer relationships, and overall life satisfaction. Other studies point to something even more practical: executive functioning. Kids who help with household tasks regularly develop stronger planning, self-control, and task management. The quiet superpowers of adulthood, built one made bed at a time.

I think about it the same way I think about running my business. When I bring someone onto my team, I don’t throw them into the deep end and hope for the best. I create structure. I pour into them. I give them the tools, the expectations, and then I get out of the way and let them lead.

That is exactly how I parent.

Lyon and Elise are not just kids living in our house. They are contributors to this family. They have roles. They have responsibilities. They have skin in the game. Because the world outside our front door will not coddle them, and I am not interested in sending them out unprepared.

The single best predictor of a young adult’s success in their mid-twenties, according to a University of Minnesota study that followed participants from preschool through their thirties, was whether they participated in household tasks as young children.

That is not a coincidence. That is a system.

Strong roots, open wings, lifelong connection. It starts with making your bed.

I took a break from The Crane Mother to be fully present on this trip. And then I came home and gave myself the grace to settle into summer before showing back up here.

That transition, from school rhythm to summer rhythm, is its own kind of work. It doesn’t happen overnight. And as a mom, I’ve learned that forcing productivity through that in-between stretch costs more than it gives. This newsletter matters to me deeply. But it doesn’t matter more than being present with my kids. It never will.

I write The Crane Mother in the thin margins of life. Early mornings. The quiet after everyone’s asleep.

Isn’t that just motherhood, though?

So. I’m back. And I have a lot to tell you.

A few months ago, I said yes to something that felt exciting and slightly terrifying in equal measure.

Ten days in Ecuador with my daughter.

An educational trip. A cloud forest. A whole lot of unknowns.

If I’m honest, there were moments leading up to it when I second-guessed myself. The packing. The logistics. The lingering question that shows up whenever I sign my kid up for something hard:

Will it actually be worth it?

Ten days later, I have my answer.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe about raising kids in a wonderful community, surrounded by opportunity and people who love them:

It’s a gift. And it’s also a bubble.

One of my deepest hopes as a mother is that my children understand there’s a world beyond their own experience. Not through a textbook. Not through a screen. By actually being in it.

We could have spent that first week of summer at the beach.

We went to a cloud forest instead.

She didn’t choose it. I did. And I’ve been thinking a lot about that, about how children don’t always know which experiences will shape them most. That’s part of our job. To hold the longer view when they can’t yet see it.

The lessons I expected were there. Ecology, conservation, a new culture, a different way of life.

But the lessons that stayed with me had nothing to do with any of that.

What actually changed, for both of us

1. She learned to appreciate the simple joys in life.

No mall. No restaurants she recognized. No plans built around entertainment or convenience. Just the forest, the people around her, and whatever the day brought.

And she was happy. Genuinely, quietly happy.

That surprised her, I think. It surprised me too, watching it happen. We spend so much energy curating experiences for our kids, filling their calendars, anticipating their boredom. And then you take all of that away and find out they were never the ones who needed it.

She came home and noticed things differently. A good meal. A long conversation. A simple afternoon with no agenda. The simple stuff landed differently because she’d spent ten days learning that it was actually enough.

2. She noticed things she never would have before.

Not the landscape. The people. Who was tired. Who felt left out. Who needed someone to sit with them at dinner. Empathy isn’t taught in a lecture. It’s activated by exposure. She saw a different kind of life up close, and something in her recalibrated.

3. She got comfortable not knowing what came next.

At home, her days are structured. She knows the schedule, the outcome, the plan. In Ecuador, plans shifted. Weather changed. Itineraries adjusted. And she learned, through repetition, that she could handle it. That “I don’t know what’s happening next” doesn’t have to mean panic. That’s a skill most adults are still working on.

4. She learned that connection doesn’t require a common language.

One afternoon, my daughter and a group of kids met two local brothers at a soccer field. No shared language. No translator. Within minutes they were laughing and running like they’d known each other for years. Just a ball. And kids being kids.

She came home understanding something about humanity that I couldn’t have explained to her. She had to feel it.

5. She started asking bigger questions.

Not about Ecuador specifically. About the world. About why things are the way they are. About what her life looks like compared to other kids’ lives, and what that means, and what she’s supposed to do with that. I didn’t have all the answers. But the questions themselves? That’s the whole point.

6. She learned, really learned, that she can do hard things.

There was a ladder in the rainforest.

Tall. Metal. The only way to reach the highest waterfall. Most of our group looked up at it and quietly decided the view from the ground was good enough.

At first, Elise said no. And I told her that was completely okay. I meant it.

But then something happened. She watched the others start climbing. And I could see it move across her face. That specific feeling that doesn’t have a clean name but every mother recognizes. The moment your child decides, on their own, that they want to be brave.

She turned to me and said she wanted to try.

So she climbed.

And when she got to the top, something settled in her that I don’t think words fully capture. Not pride exactly. Something deeper. The kind of knowing that lives in your body, not your head.

I can do hard things.

Here’s why this one matters so much to me: Elise has already proven this to herself more than once. When she launched her own business. When she navigated the constantly shifting social landscape of 5th grade. When she earned her bar routine and competed at regionals in gymnastics.

She has evidence. A whole collection of it.

But evidence needs to be added to. Regularly. Intentionally.

Because the voice that says this is too hard, stay on the ground never fully goes away. Not at 11, not at 40. What we’re building, one hard thing at a time, is a louder counter-voice. One that says this is your chance. Take it before it’s too late.

That’s why I push my kids.

Not because I want their childhoods to be hard.

Because I want them to know, in their bones, that they can handle it when life is.

7. I remembered what it feels like to be fully somewhere.

Every evening, our group gathered around a long table. No phones. No rushing. No one halfway somewhere else. Just people talking about their day.

In a world designed to pull our attention in twelve directions at once, those dinners felt like something I didn’t know I was hungry for. Presence isn’t a luxury. I’d let myself believe it was.

8. I stopped needing the trip to look a certain way.

I went in with expectations. Waterfalls, wildlife, the cloud forest moments I’d mentally photographed before we even left. And those were beautiful. But the moments that cracked me open were the small ones I never planned for.

Which is its own lesson about motherhood, honestly. The magic is almost never where you’re looking for it.

If your child has an opportunity like this, an educational trip, a summer program, anything that takes them somewhere unfamiliar and slightly uncomfortable, I hope you’ll consider saying yes.

Not because they’ll remember every fact they learn. They won’t.

But they will remember what it felt like to navigate something hard. They will remember making friends across a language barrier. They will remember standing at the top of something that scared them.

And they will carry that evidence with them long after the trip ends.

That’s what we’re really building. One brave yes at a time.

For Lovett families: the full itinerary

This trip was run through The Lovett School and organized around the Siempre Verde reserve in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. I’ve included the full itinerary below for any family considering it in the future. It’s a genuinely special program and I want you to have the full picture.

Siempre Verde, Ecuador
10 Days, Lower School Trip

Day 1 Fly from Atlanta to Quito. Rest and settle in.

Day 2 Morning drive through the Andes with stunning views of volcanic peaks and forested river valleys. Lunch stop at a crater lake before hiking up to the Siempre Verde lodge. Evening walk to spot frogs and nocturnal wildlife, including the rare olinguito.

Day 3 First full day in the cloud forest. Hike the river trail along a pristine mountain river, rock-hopping, learning about water ecosystems, and exploring upstream.

Day 4 A full day out in the community. Waterfall hike, a visit to a local school that Lovett has supported for over 30 years, and a demonstration by a women’s weaving cooperative who create beautiful textiles using natural dyes from native plants.

Day 5 The big hike. The Arriba Trail climbs approximately 3,000 feet to the highest point on the property, with possible views of Cotacachi Volcano. A second group has the option to hike to a waterfall instead. Afternoon rest by the fireside at the lodge.

Day 6 Farewell breakfast at Siempre Verde, then on to the world-famous Otavalo Market, one of the largest indigenous markets in South America. An afternoon of bartering for handwoven textiles and local art, followed by dinner with live music.

Day 7 Travel day through the highlands, with a stop at a bird of prey sanctuary and a visit to the true geographic equator, originally identified by indigenous peoples long before colonial mapping.

Day 8 Full day exploring Old Town Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Baroque churches from the 1600s, historic plazas, and an optional climb into cathedral clock towers for a panoramic view of the city. Weather permitting, a ride on one of the highest aerial trams in the world up to 13,000 feet.

Day 9 A gentle final day soaking in volcanic hot springs at a mountain resort before an overnight flight home.

Day 10 Home..

The greatest thing we can give our children isn’t a perfect childhood.

It’s a collection of moments where they discovered what they’re made of.

Ecuador added to that collection. The ladder. The soccer field. The long table at dinner with people who were strangers on Monday and felt like family by Friday.

Elise carries all of it with her now. Evidence that the world is bigger than she thought. Evidence that she belongs in it. Evidence that she can show up somewhere completely unfamiliar and not just survive it but grow from it.

That’s what I signed the permission form for.

Not a trip.

A deeper knowing of who she is.

I’m a small business owner. I live and breathe systems, rhythms, and accountability. I know what happens when a team has no structure… things fall apart, people disengage, and everyone looks to the person at the top to solve every problem. I wasn’t about to let that happen at work. And I wasn’t about to let it happen at home either.

Summer used to feel like the wheels coming off. No schedule, no rhythm, no plan. Just ten weeks of “what are we doing today?” and “I’m bored” and me slowly losing my mind while trying to run a business and referee a household. Something had to change.

So I did what I do at work. I called a meeting.

Why We Do This

Here’s what I know after years of doing this: Kids need structure. Not school structure. Not a rigid, bells-and-schedules kind of structure. Summer structure. The kind that keeps things moving, keeps things fun, and still leaves room to breathe.

This is just how we run our business, so it’s what I know. And it works.

When my kids have a rhythm, they thrive. When they don’t, everything gets loud and chaotic and I spend the whole summer putting out fires instead of actually enjoying it. The meeting is how we build the container before summer starts, so that when it does, we’re ready. All of us.

And the magic ingredient is ownership. When they choose it, they own it. When they build it, they show up for it. That’s true at work and it’s true at home.

You’re already managing your summer. The question is whether your kids are managing theirs.

How We Run It

Kyu and I are co-CEOs. The kids are the team. Everyone has a voice, everyone leaves with a role, and nobody gets to be a passenger.

We hold the meeting every year before summer officially starts, late May or early June. Timing matters. You want to do this before the chaos sets in, not two weeks deep when everyone’s already feral.

We do it in the living room. Not the dinner table. This meeting is intentional and it usually runs a little longer than dinner, so we give it the space it deserves. Phones down, everyone present, and I come in with the agenda already built. We work through it together.

The tone is collaborative, never dictatorial. I open by naming what the family needs. Then I hand it to them.

What We Cover

Ten things. It’s evolved over the years, but the premise is always the same - different depth depending on the ages in the room.

1. Chores and Home Responsibilities I name what needs to get done. They choose what they want to own. When they pick it, the complaining drops dramatically.

• Ages 4–7: Unload the silverware, feed the dog, water the plants, set the table, wipe down the sink.

• Ages 8–12: Vacuum, take out the trash, load the dishwasher, clean their bathroom, sweep the kitchen.

• Ages 13–18: Mow the lawn, do their own laundry start to finish, cook one family dinner a week, manage a sibling’s pickup, handle a task independently with no reminders.

2. Family Goals What do we want to do together this summer? Experiences, trips, things we want to build or save for as a family. We write it down. It becomes real.

• Ages 4–7: New playground or splash pad, weekly movie night, beach or lake day, plant something in the backyard and watch it grow.

• Ages 8–12: Family road trip, try new restaurants, a hiking trail, a summer reading challenge together.

• Ages 13–18: Save for a bigger trip, volunteer together, a home project everyone contributes to, a trip where they take on real planning responsibilities.

3. Individual Goals Every person at the table names what they’re working toward. Academic, personal, a skill, a solo experience. Me included.

• Ages 4–7: Learn to ride a bike, learn to swim, write their name, read ten books, try one new food a week.

• Ages 8–12: Cook one meal from scratch, run a mile, learn a game and teach it to someone, write in a journal every day, save up for something they want.

• Ages 13–18: Get a job, open a savings account, learn to drive, do something completely alone, build or create something from start to finish.

4. School-Assigned Summer Work We map every assignment onto the calendar in June. August panic is a choice. We don’t make that choice.

• Ages 4–7: Letter recognition daily, a few workbook pages at a time, read aloud together every night.

• Ages 8–12: Summer reading done by July, assignments broken into weekly chunks, a daily 20-minute work window.

• Ages 13–18: They map it themselves in June, AP work and college prep tackled early. Accountability is theirs, but you’re still watching.

5. Family Summer Schedule Anchor events, travel, camps, commitments. Everyone sees the full picture. No surprises in July.

• Ages 4–7: Camp dates, swim lessons, family vacation, grandparent visits. Anything that disrupts the weekly rhythm gets named now.

• Ages 8–12: Sports camps, sleepaway camp, family trips. Map the whole summer on one calendar so open weeks are visible.

• Ages 13–18: Jobs, internships, travel, college visits. Their summer is getting complex — the family calendar keeps everyone’s pieces fitting together.

6. Weekly Rhythms Each kid builds their own weekly schedule. I guide, they own it. This is the piece that makes everything else run.

• Ages 4–7: Wake up time, outdoor time, reading time, rest, screen time window. Make it visual and put it on the wall.

• Ages 8–12: They draft it, you refine it together. What time are you waking up? What happens before screens? What does a good day look like for you? Let them answer first.

• Ages 13–18: They own it entirely. Name the family non-negotiables and let them build around them. Have the sleep conversation now, not at midnight in July.

7. Screen Time Rules Summer blows up whatever worked during the school year. We name the limits together before it happens. Co-created rules stick. Handed-down rules start arguments.

• Ages 4–7: One hour after outdoor time, no screens before breakfast, tablets off an hour before bed. Simple, visual, consistent.

• Ages 8–12: Let them propose the number first. No screens until chores are done, no phones at meals. Let them help write the rules.

• Ages 13–18: Negotiate, don’t mandate. Agree on phone-free windows, talk about what healthy looks like for them. Hold the important lines and let them own the rest.

8. Social and Friend Expectations Sleepovers, friends at the house, transportation, autonomy. We talk about it once in the meeting so we’re not negotiating it a hundred times over the summer.

• Ages 4–7: Playdates at our house or theirs, how much notice do we need, what does pickup and drop-off look like, who do we call if something goes wrong.

• Ages 8–12: How many sleepovers per month, what’s the ask protocol, can they walk or bike to a friend’s house, who needs to be home for dinner.

• Ages 13–18: Curfews, check-in expectations, transportation responsibilities, party and event protocols. What autonomy are they earning and what is it contingent on.

9. Incentive and Allowance System My kids have Greenlight cards. Their allowance hits weekly. That’s their money to manage. We don’t supplement, we don’t bail them out, and we don’t pay for things outside of what’s agreed. We revisit the system every summer so everyone’s clear.

• Ages 4–7: A small weekly amount in a jar they can see and touch, spending versus saving in the simplest terms, let them buy something small with their own money and feel what that means.

• Ages 8–12: Spend, save, give. What are they working toward and how long will it take? Let them do the math. Let them run out of money once. It’s the best lesson you’ll ever not have to teach.

• Ages 13–18: Real stakes, real amounts, real conversations. Where is the money going? Wants versus needs, short-term versus long-term. Financial literacy happening in real time at your kitchen table.

10. The “I’m Bored” Protocol and Passion Project Every kid makes their own boredom list in the meeting. It goes on the wall. When “I’m bored” happens, I point to the wall. I am not the answer to that question. And every kid names one thing they want to create or get better at this summer. Not a goal with a metric. Something that’s just theirs.

• Ages 4–7: Boredom list - build a fort, draw, play in the sprinklers, do a puzzle, make up a game outside. Passion project — learn a song, put on a backyard show, start a collection.

• Ages 8–12: Boredom list - bake something, call a friend, build something from the garage, reread a favorite book, make a comic strip. Passion project — learn to sew or knit, start a YouTube channel, write a short story, learn a new sport.

• Ages 13–18: Boredom list - go for a run, journal, find a recipe and cook it, text someone you haven’t talked to in a while, reorganize your space. Why It Works

The fights go down. Not because everyone’s happy all the time, but because the rules were theirs. You can’t argue with a choice you made yourself.

You stop being the answer to every question. They stop being passengers. The house runs, not perfectly, but intentionally. And there’s a real difference between those two things.

What I didn’t expect when I started doing this is how much it would change the way my kids see themselves. When a seven-year-old owns a chore, they walk a little taller. When a teenager maps out her own summer, she shows up differently to it. They stop waiting to be told what to do and start running their own lives.

That’s the whole point.

This isn’t about a perfectly optimized summer. It’s about raising people who know how to build one.

FAQ

I received a few FAQs in my DMs, and I thought I’d answer the ones that I can:

What if my kids don’t do their chores?

First, take a breath. This is normal, especially in the beginning. Go back to the meeting. Remind them that they chose this. That’s your greatest leverage - not nagging, not consequences, but ownership. They picked it. Hold them to it with calm consistency, not frustration.

What if my kids fight over who gets which chore?

Let them work it out first. You’d be surprised what happens when you step back and give them sixty seconds to figure it out themselves. If it escalates, you make the call. You’re the CEO, remember. Final decisions land with you.

How long should the meeting actually take?

Plan for 60 to 90 minutes. It might be shorter with younger kids, longer with teenagers who have opinions about everything. Don’t rush it. This meeting is doing a lot of work for your whole summer.

Do I really need to include the little ones? My 4-year-old can’t sit through this.

Yes, include them — but keep their piece short. Ten minutes of real participation is enough. They choose one chore, they name one thing they want to do this summer, and they feel seen. That matters more than you know. Let them color while the older kids go deeper.

What if my kids push back on the whole thing?

That’s okay. Pushback means they’re engaged. Hear them out, adjust where you can, and hold the line where you need to. The goal isn’t a perfect meeting. It’s a family that knows how to sit down together and figure things out. That’s the real skill you’re building.

My partner isn’t on board. Can I still do this solo?

Yes. You don’t need a co-CEO to call the meeting. One parent running a thoughtful, intentional summer is more than enough. If your partner sees it working, they’ll come around. Let the results do the talking.

What if we get to July and everything falls apart?

Then you call a mid-summer check-in. Pull out the template. Revisit what’s working and what isn’t. Things falling apart isn’t failure — it’s information. The families who adjust are the ones who finish strong.

What if we don’t do allowance?

That’s okay. The incentive system looks different for every family. What matters is that your kids have some relationship with responsibility and reward. Whether that’s allowance, earned privileges, or something else entirely — name it in the meeting so everyone’s clear.

How often should we revisit the plan?

We do a check-in once a month, sometimes more if something stops working. The Summer Meeting sets the foundation. The check-ins keep it alive. Put one on the calendar before you close the meeting so it actually happens.

My kids are all different ages — do I run one meeting or separate ones?

One meeting, together. That’s part of the magic. The little ones watch the older ones take ownership and they want in. The older ones feel the weight of being seen as capable. Everyone being in the same room, at the same table, building the same summer — that’s the whole point.

Is this too controlling? Am I taking the fun out of summer?

I hear this one a lot. Here’s the truth: structure doesn’t take the fun out of summer. Chaos does. When kids don’t know what’s expected of them, when every day feels like a negotiation, when screens fill every empty hour by default — that’s not freedom. That’s drift. A container doesn’t cage a summer. It holds it. And inside that container, the fun is actually freer.

There is nothing quite like doing everything for the first time with your first child — the first fever, the first heartbreak, the first time you realize you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing and you’re just hoping love is enough to fill the gaps.

This past week, he finished freshman year of high school. And I exhaled in a way I didn’t know I’d been holding my breath. Something has shifted in him this year in the best possible way. The teenage turbulence that consumed so much of middle school has started to quiet. He’s gaining perspective. He’s maturing into someone I genuinely love talking to. He is becoming, right in front of me, the person I always believed he could be.

And in that exhale, I found myself thinking about everything I wish I had known before August. Not the logistics — the school supplies, the schedule, the parking situation. The real things. The conversations I almost waited too long to have. The lessons that don’t appear in any syllabus but shape everything about who your son becomes.

So I wrote them down. All twenty of them! Yayyyy….

1. Find the thing that shows him what he’s made of. Before high school starts, your son needs a moment — not a trophy, a moment — that proves to himself he can handle hard things. For Lyon, it was wrestling. In 8th grade, another kid started something in the gymnasium. Lyon finished it calmly and efficiently, with the technique of a boy who had spent years being the smallest guy on the mat learning to use leverage instead of size. I’m not proud of the fight. I’m proud that he never needed to start one, and that when it came to him, he had the training and the confidence not to fall apart. That’s what a hard sport, a hard season, a hard something gives a boy. Find it before freshman year finds him first.

2. Talk about his body before someone else does. Not a book on the nightstand. A real conversation. Growth spurts, voice changes, the way his body will feel foreign to him in waves. Lyon was one size in September and barely recognizable by spring. Boys who aren’t prepared for those changes feel ambushed by their own bodies, and a boy playing defense against himself before first period is already behind. Talk about puberty early, update the conversation every year, and don’t wait until something happens to start it.

3. Talk about the birds and the bees. All of it. The anatomy, the pleasure, the emotional weight, the commitment involved. Start simple and go deeper as he matures. Your son is going to encounter information about sex whether you initiate that conversation or not. The only question is whether he hears it from you first, with your values and your love attached to it, or from somewhere else entirely. Don’t flinch. He needs you to go there.

4. Teach him how to treat women. Starting at home. How he treats his mother, his sister, his grandmothers right now is practice for how he will one day treat his girlfriend, his wife, his daughter. Talk about women with respect, kindness and humility. Not as a lecture, but as a standard that is simply assumed in your house. Lyon has watched his father love me well his entire life. I believe that is the most powerful lesson no classroom will ever be able to teach.

5. Talk about bullying. All three sides of it. The boy being bullied. The boy doing the bullying. The bystander who says nothing. Your son will occupy all three roles at different points and pretending otherwise doesn’t protect him. Teach him what bullying actually looks like because most of it isn’t a movie moment. It’s the group chat he’s not in, the joke that lands the same way every single day, the exclusion that’s impossible to name but impossible to miss. Ask him “is there anyone at school you don’t feel great around?” rather than “are you being bullied.” He’ll say no to that question every single time.

6. Talk about discrimination openly and without softening it. Race, class, privilege, what it means to walk into certain rooms as the person he is. Lyon is a Korean American boy growing up in Atlanta and there are conversations we have at our dinner table that are simply part of raising him with clear eyes. Talk about compassion. Talk about community. Talk about what it means to be treated as less than, and what it means to see that happening to someone else and choose to do something about it.

7. Build his self worth before the world starts defining it for him. High school is a four year exercise in comparison and your son needs an anchor before he walks in. Talk about his dreams without attaching your expectations to them. Help him develop a growth mindset. Avoid comparisons to siblings, classmates, anyone. Teach him that who he is becoming is worth trusting, even when the process is messy and slow. His value is not his GPA, his stats or his social standing. He needs to hear that from you before he starts looking for it somewhere else.

8. Teach him how to grieve. Whether it’s a lost game, a family pet or a grandparent, walk through it with him. Don’t rush him past the feeling. Don’t tell him to shake it off. Boys who are never taught how to sit with grief become men who don’t know what to do with pain, and that gap costs them more than anyone talks about. Let him feel it. Show him that hard emotions don’t make him weak. They make him human.

9. Give him a faith foundation. Talk about prayer as his way of communicating with God, for comfort and peace, for guidance and strength, for reflection in the moments life gets loud and confusing. Lyon knows that when things get hard, which they will, he has somewhere to turn that isn’t just his own mind running in circles at 2am. Giving your son something larger than himself to anchor to is one of the most quietly protective things you can do.

10. Have a plan for the hard things before they arrive. Peer pressure. The first time he encounters pornography. Being turned down by a girl. His first experience with alcohol at a party. Disappointment that floors him. His relationship with screens, money, social media. These things are coming whether you talk about them or not. Most parents wait until after the moment to have the conversation. I learned to have it before, plainly and early, without making him feel like he’s already in trouble for something that hasn’t happened yet. He needs to know you are the person he can call no matter what.

11. Stop chasing straight A’s. Build study habits instead. I learned this one slowly. A kid coasting to perfect grades in easy classes is not being served. A kid who earns a B+ in something that genuinely stretched him has learned something that lasts. What I told Lyon: school is not a performance for me. It is an investment for you. The study habits built in 9th grade, how to focus, plan, sit with hard material and recover from a bad grade with his head up, are the ones he will carry into college and every deadline after.

12. Make him go to office hours. Introduce himself. Email when he’s lost. Say thank you when he’s not. Almost no one does this consistently and it changes everything. Teachers are rooting for your kid. They will advocate, go to bat, write the recommendation letter that actually says something real, but only if he has given them something to root for. That is not about being a teacher’s pet. It is about being a person, not just a name in a grade book. Lyon had a teacher this year who became someone he genuinely looked up to. That relationship didn’t happen by accident.

13. Protect his sleep like it is a sport. A sleep deprived teenage boy is a completely different human being. Reactive, moody, retaining almost nothing. I watched this play out in real time this year. Late nights are not a badge of honor. They are a performance killer. Set the boundary early before the habits calcify and become impossible to undo.

14. Teach him to shake hands and make eye contact. The boy who can walk into a room, introduce himself and hold a real conversation with an adult is already ahead of most of his peers. Practice this at home, at the dinner table, before family events, at every opportunity you can find. It is a skill, not a personality trait, and it can be taught. It will open more doors than any grade ever will.

15. Let him be bored. Don’t fill every gap. Seriously. Boredom is where boys figure out who they actually are and what they genuinely want. The overscheduled kid never gets that chance. Some of the best things Lyon discovered this year happened in the spaces I didn’t plan, the afternoons I didn’t fill, the stretches of time where he had to figure out what to do with himself.

16. Make sure he has one adult at school who isn’t his friend. A coach, a mentor, a teacher he trusts and genuinely respects. Someone who sees him clearly and will tell him the truth. That relationship can quietly redirect a bad semester before you ever know something was wrong. Lyon had one this year. I am more grateful for that person than I have ever told them.

17. Teach him to lose well. Not gracefully. Well. Shake the hand. Feel the loss privately. Come back with something to prove. Boys who never learn to lose become men who cannot handle failure, and high school will hand him plenty of chances to practice. I learned not to rescue him from the disappointment. My job was to sit with him in it, and then watch him stand back up on his own.

18. Talk about integrity constantly. Not as a rule. As a standard. Who is he when there is no grade, no parent, no coach in the room? That is the only version of him that matters in the long run. I learned to hold this up as the thing I am most proud of. Not his times, not his GPA, not his accolades. Who he is when doing the right thing costs him something. That is the boy I am raising.

19. The friends he chooses will shape him more than I ever will. This is the lesson that kept me up at night the most. You can do everything right, every conversation, every value you’ve tried to instill, and then he walks into high school and the social gravity shifts entirely. What I told Lyon before freshman year: look at your closest friends and ask yourself honestly, do they make you better? Not cooler. Not more popular. Better. Do they push you? Do they show up when things are hard? Do you feel like yourself around them? You cannot choose his friends. But you can ask those questions consistently, without judgment, and make home the place where the good ones always want to be.

20. The college conversation can wait. Freshman year is not the time. Let him find his footing first. Let him discover what he loves. The kid who walks into junior year knowing who he is will write a far better application than the kid who spent four years trying to build one. I have learned to trust the long game on this one.

Lyon is fifteen now.

He is taller than me and funnier than I expected and full of opinions I’m still catching up to. He navigated this year in ways I’ll never fully know, and honestly, that is okay. That is the job. You pour everything you have into them and then you watch them start to find their own footing, and you stand close enough to catch them but far enough back that they learn to balance on their own.

If I could go back to that August morning, pulling into the school parking lot, watching him walk through those doors for the first time as a high schooler, I wouldn’t say a word about grades or college or any of it.

I’d just hold on a little longer before I let him go.

And then I’d whisper: you are more ready than you think. Choose the people who bring out the best in you. Show up for the adults who are in your corner. Find the thing that sets you on fire and run toward it.

And no matter what this year looks like, come home and tell me about it.

That door is always open. It always will be.

Elise was six. And Lyon was nine. Both of them were strong swimmers… I want to make that clear from the start. Elise could swim a full lap in an Olympic-size pool. Lyon was practically amphibious. I had every reason to feel comfortable letting them slip into the backyard pool that morning while our group ate breakfast inside.

I told them: shallow end only.

The Moment that will Haunt me Forever

And then… something shifted in my gut. A pull I can’t explain, even now. After maybe five minutes, I turned to my girlfriends and said, can we just move out to the back porch? I’d feel better keeping an eye on them.

They said yes without question. Thank God they did.

When I walked outside, I saw Lyon swimming along the side of the pool. Then I looked to the middle of the pool, to the deep end.

Elise’s head was bobbing. Up. Down. Up. Down.

I called her name as I rushed toward the water.

No answer.

No screaming. No splashing. No arms waving.

Silence.

I jumped in, fully clothed - swam to her, swooshed her up, and pulled her to the edge. She clung to me and started crying. That was the first sound she made.

What happened, we later pieced together: she had spent that morning trying to keep up with her big brother in the deep end. She was proud, she was determined. And she had quietly, completely exhausted herself. She had nothing left.

If I had waited thirty more seconds inside, I don’t know what I would have come outside to.

This day, five years ago this week, still haunts me every single day.

What Drowning Actually Looks Like

This is the part every parent needs to read. Because what I witnessed that morning was not what movies tell you drowning looks like.

• There was no screaming.

• No dramatic thrashing.

• No waving arms.

• Elise looked, from a distance, almost like she was just... treading water.

• Head tilted back slightly. Quiet.

That is exactly what drowning looks like.

When a person is drowning, their body enters what’s called the Instinctive Drowning Response. The body’s one job is to get air. Everything else shuts down. A drowning person cannot yell for help because their mouth is barely above water and the only priority is breathing. They cannot wave their arms because their arms are instinctively pressing down against the water to try to keep themselves afloat. They often remain nearly vertical, with little or no leg movement.

Drowning is, as experts put it, remarkably undramatic.

According to the University of Utah Health, 50% of children who drown do so within 25 yards of a parent. Ten percent drown while a parent is actively watching - and simply doesn’t recognize what they’re seeing.

Here’s what to look for:

• Silence — children playing in water make noise. When they go quiet, check on them immediately.

• Head low in the water, tilted back with mouth open or at the surface

• Vertical body position with little to no leg movement

• Arms pressing downward, not waving

• Glassy, unfocused eyes, or eyes closed

• No response when you call their name — if they can answer you, they’re probably okay. A blank stare means you have seconds, not minutes.

• No forward progress — they appear to be swimming but aren’t going anywhere

The American Red Cross notes that if you call out to a swimmer and they don’t respond, they may be in distress. Ask “Are you okay?” If they can’t answer, act immediately. You may have fewer than 30 seconds.

And here’s the hardest part: a good swimmer can drown. A child who could swim a full lap hours earlier can drown. Exhaustion, panic, cold water, misjudging depth - any of these can flip the equation in an instant.

The Rules We Forget (And Shouldn’t)

1. For children under 5: touch supervision — meaning within arm’s reach, in the water with them, at all times.

2. For children ages 5–9: active supervision — a designated adult whose only job at that moment is watching. No phone. No book. No turning away to grab a snack.

3. For children 10 and up: still requires active supervision, especially in deeper water or unfamiliar conditions.

A “good swimmer” still needs to be watched. Ability and stamina are two different things, as I learned.

And vacation pools - rental homes, hotels, resorts - are where parents tend to relax their guard the most. The pool is right there. The other adults are around. Surely someone is watching. This diffusion of responsibility is one of the most dangerous things that happens around water.

Designate a watcher. Rotate if you need to. But someone’s eyes should be on those kids at all times.

Why I Will Never Stop Advocating for Summer Swim Team

Long before that morning at the beach house, I was a swim team mom. I was already a believer. But what happened five years ago cemented something in me that I will preach until my children’s children have children.

Summer swim team is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child.

Not because of the trophies. Not because of the times. Because of what the back-and-forth, back-and-forth of a swim lane builds in a child — stamina, technique, confidence, and a real relationship with the water. It teaches them their limits. It teaches them to respect the water. It builds the strength that, one day, might save their life.

Both Elise and Lyon started around age five.

Lyon kept swimming - and swam his way to Dynamo, one of Atlanta’s premier competitive programs, where he has become a genuinely strong swimmer. This summer, he is working toward becoming a certified lifeguard. He did his CPR certification. He learned to save kids. I know… I know, that what he saw that morning five years ago, watching his little sister struggle while he felt helpless on the side of the pool, is what drives him. He wasn’t going to feel helpless again.

Elise swam for three more years in summer league before her gymnastics schedule took over around age ten. And here’s the honest truth about Elise: she didn’t always love it. She’s fiercely competitive, and she could not stand being placed in the last heat. She’d come out of the water frustrated, jaw set, already calculating. But I didn’t care. I kept signing her up. Because what she was building - lung capacity, body awareness, water confidence, grit - doesn’t show up on a ribbon. It shows up at a beach house in the deep end of a rental pool when every second matters.

The long morning practices. The early meets. The full Mays and Junes that basically belong to the swim schedule. Every bit of it is worth it. Every single bit.

It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up

The Atlanta Swimming Association’s 2026 season kicks off May 26th, with the championship scheduled for June 24–26 at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center — the same pool that hosted the 1996 Olympics. You still have time.

Summer swim is not elite, high-pressure, or expensive. It’s neighborhood pools, popsicles at the end of meets, parents cheering from folding chairs, kids making friends they’ll have for years. It is, genuinely, one of the best things about an Atlanta summer. It’s a block party that happens to take place in a lane.

Because this May had other plans for me.

I cheered at two graduations, celebrating families and children who made it to a milestone worth witnessing in person. I welcomed my brother — on his way to becoming a commercial pilot — and I was present for that visit. We cooked together. We talked. I didn’t rush it. I sat with my high school son for four hours of Mandarin, then pivoted to Geometry, then his Biology lab report, then his English term paper. I hosted Legacy portrait sessions at the studio and loved every single client who walked through the door. I threw a dinner for longtime family friends — the chicken was overcooked, the garlic bread was dry, the weather was perfect, and we sang happy birthday to our beautiful sons. It was everything.

This is what being a Crane Mother looks like.

And honestly? This is what motherhood looks like.

It’s impossible math. It’s saying yes to the thing right in front of you and letting something else slide. It’s dropping balls — on purpose — because you finally learned that not every ball is made of glass. It’s disappointing your audience to show up for your family. It’s disappointing your family to show up for yourself. It’s the overcooked chicken and the late nights and the four-subject study session that wasn’t on your plan for the evening. It’s being 85% done with something you’re proud of and choosing presence anyway. It’s the guilt that follows. It’s making peace with that guilt. It’s doing it all over again tomorrow.

Motherhood is not a highlight reel. It is a constant, sacred, exhausting act of reassessment.

What matters most right now? The answer changes every single day. The way we protect our energy changes. And one of the most powerful things we can model for our children — especially our daughters — is that protecting yourself is not selfish. Saying not yet is not failure. Holding a boundary, even one you set for yourself, even when it disappoints people, is an act of love. For them. For you.

You are in the frame whether you pick up the camera or not. Every meal, every late night, every hard conversation, every thing you said no to so you could say yes to what mattered — that is your legacy. That is the photograph your children will carry long after you’re gone.

Not just for her. For both of us.

This season was a lot. And I mean that in the way that parents say “a lot” when they really mean “I stress-ate more granola bars in parking lots than I’d like to admit and I said a few things under my breath on the drive home that I’m grateful nobody heard.” It was hard in ways I expected and hard in ways I absolutely did not.

But it was also one of the most clarifying seasons I have had as a mom. It showed me, in real time, what it actually looks like to raise a kid who can handle pressure, start over with grace, and still show up as her full self when it counts. I want to share what I learned, what I did, and honestly, what I had to fight against in myself to get there.

A Little Backstory

Elise has been in gymnastics since she was 18 months old. It started with a mommy-and-me class, which is really just a polite way of saying “let me play with my daughter for an hour.” She was completely hooked from the very first session. When the opportunity to try out for Hot Shots came up, she went for it without a second of hesitation.

Here is the thing about me watching all of this unfold: I grew up in this sport. Eleven years, ages 3 to 14, competing out of Valdosta. I thought I knew exactly what I was walking back into as a gym mom. I thought I had context. What I did not have was any emotional preparation whatsoever for watching my five-year-old train seven hours a week at Level 2.

For full context: my peak training load as a Level 8 gymnast was eight hours per week. Eight. I competed for over a decade, made it to Level 8, and my kindergartner in pigtails was practically keeping pace with me. I did not do particularly well in competition, which is probably why. Humbling does not begin to cover it.

Over the years, Elise made two gym moves. The first was to follow a beloved coach she simply was not ready to leave behind. If you have been in competitive youth sports, you already understand this completely. A great coach is not just a coach. They are a safe person, a belief system, a reason to keep going on the hard days. You do not walk away from that lightly.

The second move was more logistical: proximity, a better coach-to-athlete ratio, and a clearer path to higher-level gymnastics opportunities down the road, including the possibility of competing at the collegiate level someday. Each move was hard. Each move was right. Elise and three of her closest friends, girls she had trained alongside since they were four years old, walked into Champion Gymnastics and started completely over. No leotards yet. No reputation. No history at this gym, no built-in credibility, no guarantee of anything. Just four girls who loved the sport, a head coach who saw something in them almost immediately, and a whole lot of grit they did not even fully know they possessed yet.

The Season Nobody Expected

Starting over is romantic in theory and genuinely uncomfortable in practice. Walking into a new gym mid-season, learning new rhythms, figuring out the unspoken culture of a new team, earning trust from scratch with coaches and teammates you have never met... it takes something out of a kid. There is no shortcut through that kind of adjustment. You just have to live it.

There were hard days. There were quiet car rides home where I was choosing every single word very carefully, which if you know me, is not always my natural state. There were moments where I could see Elise recalibrating in real time, recalibrating what she expected from herself, from the gym, from the season. I watched her work through things I could not work through for her, which is its own particular kind of hard for a mom.

And gymnastics was only one layer of what she was carrying this season. This girl was logging 16-plus hours of training per week. She was attending private sessions. She was showing up to weekend clinics. She was keeping up with a genuinely demanding school workload. AND she was actively building her own business, with a major launch on the horizon that she had been working toward for months. At eleven years old. Meanwhile I sometimes struggle to return a text before noon, so I will just leave that there.

She qualified at locals. Then at state. And then one day, the call came for Regionals.

Elise and her teammate became the first gymnasts in Champion Gymnastics’ history to ever qualify for Regionals. Their very first season at a brand new gym. The first time this gym had ever sent anyone. They walked through those doors in January with no leotards and made history by spring. I genuinely do not have the words to describe what it felt like to watch that unfold in real time. So I will just say this: I ate a lot of granola bars in a lot of parking lots this season, and every single one of them was worth it.

What I Did: How to Raise a Champion

I want to be extremely clear before I share any of this: Elise did the work. Every single bit of it. She made the hard choices, she showed up when it was exhausting, she pushed through the discomfort of starting over, and she earned everything that came from this season. I am not here to take any of that credit.

But I do believe, deeply, that what we do as parents in the background matters more than we give ourselves credit for. Not the pushing, not the pressure, not the managing. The quieter things. Here is what I did this season that I would do again in a heartbeat, and what I would tell any parent raising a kid through a hard season.

1. I protected my schedule so I could protect hers.

The white space in my calendar this season was not an accident and it was not passive. I made an intentional, active choice to keep margin so that I could actually be present when it mattered: at practice, in the car, in the quiet moments after a hard day when she needed to process out loud or needed me to just sit there and not fix anything.

Here is something I know to be true about my kids: they do not talk to me at dinner. They do not open up during a scheduled check-in. They talk in the car, when we are both facing forward, when nobody is making eye contact and the pressure of a formal conversation is completely off. That is where the real stuff comes out. You cannot be available for those moments if your calendar is stacked and you are always rushing to the next thing. Protecting your own schedule is one of the most underrated parenting tools we have.

2. I let her own the decision.

Elise chose Champion. I shared my perspective, I asked the questions that needed asking, I made sure she had all the information. But at the end of the day, the decision was hers to make. This is not always the easy route as a parent. It is often much faster and cleaner to just tell them what to do. But I have learned that when a kid chooses something herself, she commits to it at a completely different level.

She pushes through the hard parts because it is her dream she is protecting, not yours. She digs in when it gets uncomfortable because she chose this, and that choice means something to her. The moment a kid’s sport or activity becomes primarily about your vision for them, you have quietly taken something from them. Let them own it. It will serve them far better in the long run.

3. I kept her community intact.

The fact that Elise made this move alongside three friends she had trained with since they were four years old was not a coincidence. It was something I paid very close attention to as we navigated this decision. I knew that the adjustment to a new gym would be hard. I knew the learning curve would take time. What I wanted to make sure was that she did not have to do that while also feeling completely alone in a new environment.

Belonging is fuel. This is especially true during transitions, and it is especially true for kids. When you are starting over somewhere unfamiliar, having even one person in the room who truly knows you, who has seen you on your worst practice days and still shows up beside you, changes the entire emotional experience. I made sure her people came with her, and I believe it made all the difference in how quickly she found her footing.

4. I stayed steady when it got hard.

I had doubts this season. Real ones. A second gym move, a brand new environment mid-season, a coaching relationship that was still being built, a lot of unknowns about how it would all shake out. There were moments where I was genuinely uncertain whether we had made the right call.

But I made a very deliberate choice not to put any of that on her. Kids take their emotional temperature directly from us. If I had been openly anxious, second-guessing the decision out loud, or visibly hand-wringy every time something was hard, she would have absorbed that as permission to fall apart too. My steadiness was not about pretending everything was perfect. It was about modeling what it looks like to hold your nerve through uncertainty. Regulating your own worry so your kid can stay grounded is genuinely one of the most under-appreciated and hardest parts of this parenting thing. Nobody talks about it enough.

5. I never stopped advocating for her.

Quietly. Consistently. In the background where she could not always see it but could always feel it. Advocacy does not always look loud or dramatic or like a parent storming into a gym with a list of demands. Sometimes it is a well-timed, calm conversation with a coach about what your kid needs. Sometimes it is noticing early that something is off and asking the right question before it becomes a bigger problem. Sometimes it is simply showing up, week after week, season after season, so your kid knows in her bones that there is always someone paying attention. I never stopped being in her corner, even when that just meant sitting in the parking lot waiting.

6. I believed in her whole identity.

Elise is a gymnast. She is also a young entrepreneur. She is a student, a creative, a loyal friend, a kid with a vision for her own life that she is already actively building. I never once asked her to set any of those things down to make room for another. I never framed her business as a distraction from gymnastics, or gymnastics as a distraction from school. She is all of it, all at once, and I treated her that way.

This matters more than it might seem. Kids who are supported in their whole identity, not just the version of themselves that performs or achieves or wins, develop a sense of self that is not fragile. When one season gets hard, it does not take them down completely because their worth is not entirely wrapped up in that one thing. Give your kid permission to be more than their sport, their grades, or their accolades. It will be the thing that carries them when things get hard.

7. I celebrated the process, not just the outcome.

We were celebrating long before Regionals was even on the table. The first solid practice at Champion, when I could see something click for her in a new environment. The first meet in her new leo, nervous and brave at the same time. The skill she had been chasing for months and finally nailed on a completely random Tuesday with nobody watching but me. I made a big deal of all of it. Championships are built in the small moments we choose to acknowledge along the way. Do not wait for the trophy to tell your kid you see them. They need to hear it on the ordinary Tuesdays, especially on those days, because that is when it means the most.

The Bigger Lesson

The champion was not made at Regionals.

She was made in January, in an unfamiliar gym with borrowed confidence and no leotard. She was made on the quiet mornings before school when she got up and did what was required even when she was tired. She was made in the long drives to weekend clinics, in the evenings she pushed through exhaustion to keep building her business because she had made a commitment to herself and she intended to keep it. She was made in every hard car ride home and every moment she chose to recalibrate instead of quit.

Resilience is not built in the wins. It is built in the transitions, in the starting-overs, in the moments when nobody is watching yet and you choose to keep going anyway. That is where character actually forms. The competition floor just gives you the chance to show what was already there.

What this season confirmed for me, more clearly than anything before it, is that my job is not to clear the path for her. It is not to manage every variable, smooth every rough edge, or protect her from every hard thing. My job is to make sure she has what she needs to walk the path herself. That is it. That is the whole job. And watching her compete at Regionals, composed and powerful and completely and entirely herself, I felt like we had both, finally, figured out something important.

The Crane Mom

That is the whole Crane Mom thing, really. I am not a Tiger Mom pushing relentlessly from the front, engineering every outcome and measuring success in trophies. And I am not a Panda Mom either, cushioning every fall, protecting her from the very discomfort that would help her grow. The Crane Mom way is strong roots, open wings, and lifelong connection. High expectations and a genuinely safe place to land. Ambition and closeness, together, at the same time, without apology. This season was the most vivid, real-world proof I have ever had that that approach actually works.

The Year I Almost Lost Everything, Including the Dog

Three years ago, in the span of a single May, I was running a school-wide Teacher Appreciation campaign, hosting multiple events at the studio, managing two kids — a second grader and a sixth grader, both with completely different schedules — and we got a puppy.

A puppy.

I don’t know what I was thinking. Actually, I do. I was thinking that May felt far away when we made the deposit in February. I was thinking we’d figure it out. I was thinking, how bad could it really be?

It was very bad.

The Teacher Appreciation campaign wasn’t just sending a card and some flowers. I was the co-lead organizer for the entire school — coordinating gifts for every teacher, every aide, every specialist, every staff member across the building. I was at that school from 6am to 4pm every single day during setup and execution week. It was, functionally, a second full-time job.

At work: We were deep in our busiest season of the year. Our infamous Mom Prom event was in full swing. We were capturing hundreds of preschoolers for their Spring and Graduation portraits. Our studio hosted a Mother’s Day Market. And I was up to my neck in production work — editing, delivering, keeping clients happy, keeping the business running — all while physically being somewhere else.

At home: a puppy who didn’t sleep through the night. A second grader with a field trip, a class party, and a spring concert all in the same week. A sixth grader with end-of-year projects, a sports banquet, summer swim season and the emotional intensity that comes with every milestone in those years. A household that still needed dinner. Laundry. Sanity.

One night, after I’d been at the school all day, come home to a puppy-related disaster on the kitchen floor, and realized I had completely forgotten to sign a permission slip that was due that morning — my husband looked at me and said the thing no one wants to hear:

“We need to give the dog away. Our family can’t handle this right now.”

I cried. Not because he was wrong — he wasn’t wrong. But because I felt like I had failed at all of it. The dog. The kids. The campaign. The family. All of it piling up at once, and I was the one holding every thread.

That was my breaking point. And breaking points, as it turns out, are where systems are born.

What Is Maycember? And Why Is It So Brutal?

If you haven’t heard the term Maycember before, let me introduce you to something you’ve absolutely lived through.

Maycember (also known as Mayhem) is what happens when the school calendar collides with the spring social calendar and lands entirely in your lap. It’s the month where everything — and I mean everything — happens at once. It looks like this:

• End-of-year class parties (one per kid, per class — plus whatever you signed up to bring)

• Teacher Appreciation Week, which means gifts for every teacher, aide, specialist, coach, bus driver, and counselor your child interacts with

• Field trips, permission slips, and last-minute fees that arrive with 48 hours’ notice

• Spirit days, pajama days, decade days, and dress-up themes nobody mentioned in September

• Sports banquets, award ceremonies, and recitals — often all in the same weekend

• School plays, talent shows, and volunteer sign-up sheets you feel guilty saying no to

• Graduation ceremonies — yours, your child’s, a sibling’s, a friend’s

• Mother’s Day, which you will plan for everyone else while hoping someone remembers you

• Half days and early releases scattered throughout the month like little calendar landmines

• Summer prep panic, which begins approximately May 15th regardless of your readiness

Now multiply that by how many kids you have. And add the fact that someone has to hold all of this in their head, coordinate all of it, execute all of it, and still show up emotionally for the actual moments.

That someone is almost always mom.

The Research Nobody Talks About

The experience of being overwhelmed in May isn’t just anecdotal — it’s structural.

Researchers studying the mental load of mothers have documented what many of us feel but struggle to articulate: women are disproportionately responsible for the invisible cognitive work of family life. Sociologist Allison Daminger’s research on cognitive labor identifies four stages — anticipating needs, identifying options, making decisions, and monitoring outcomes — and finds that women bear the majority of this load across all four stages, particularly the anticipating and monitoring phases that never fully turn off.

In May, all four stages run simultaneously and at full volume. You’re anticipating what’s coming (the field trip next Thursday), identifying options (what to bring, who to coordinate with), making decisions (is the store-bought treat good enough or do I need to bake?), and monitoring outcomes (did the permission slip actually make it into the backpack?) — all while doing everything else.

Decision fatigue is real. Studies suggest the average adult makes roughly 35,000 decisions per day. In May, that number doesn’t just rise — it compounds.

What makes Maycember particularly insane is the density. It’s not that any single event is unmanageable. It’s that they arrive in clusters, with short lead times, with social expectations attached, and with the added emotional weight of milestone moments — last days, final performances, end-of-an-era transitions that you don’t want to miss because you were too busy scrambling for a gift bag.

The exhaustion of May isn’t a personal failing. It’s a predictable response to a genuinely crazy load.

The Crane Mom Philosophy — Why I Believe in Systems

You’ve heard of Tiger Moms — high-achieving, academically rigorous, performance-driven. You’ve heard of Panda Moms — relaxed, child-led, unstructured. The Crane Mom lives between them. She is intentional without being rigid. She has high standards without demanding perfection. She plans thoughtfully so she can be fully present when it counts.

The goal of a system is never control. It’s freedom. When the logistics are handled, you get to actually show up for your life.

That’s what the puppy May taught me. I didn’t lose it because I was doing too much — I lost it because I was doing too much reactively. I was responding to every fire instead of preventing them. I had no system. I had no plan. I had no buffer.

The following year, I built one. And three years later, I still use it. It’s the reason May now feels manageable instead of miserable. It’s the reason I’ve actually been present at the performances, the banquets, the last days — instead of mentally rehearsing what I forgot.

The Maycember System — Five Things to Do Right Now

Here’s what I do every April to get ahead of May. Not all at once — one thing at a time, starting now.

1. Do the May Audit. Before May starts, sit down with every calendar, every app, and every crumpled flyer in the backpack. Write down every single thing that’s happening this May — field trips, parties, ceremonies, half days, appreciation weeks, birthdays. All of it. One master list.

The audit is not about managing the list. It’s about ending the ambush. When you can see it all at once, the chaos becomes legible. You go from dreading a vague overwhelm to managing a specific set of things. That shift alone changes everything.

2. Build your Teacher Gift Kit — and list every person. This is the one nobody does thoroughly enough. Before you buy a single thing, make a complete list of every adult who works with your child: homeroom teachers, specials teachers (PE, art, music, library), paraprofessionals, aides, the school counselor, the reading specialist, the bus driver, the front office staff, coaches, tutors, dance teachers.

Then pick one universal gift and buy it in bulk. Gift cards are my go-to — a $25 gift card to Amazon, Target, or a local coffee shop, with a handwritten note from your child, is genuinely more meaningful than a themed basket you stress-assembled at 11pm. Bulk order now. Write the notes over the next few weekends. Done.

The group gift hack: If you’re willing to send one text to a class parent, propose a group gift. Twenty families contributing $5 each means a $100 gift card — and the teacher gets something that actually matters. You spend less than a latte. Text someone today.

3. Stock the Event Drawer. Somewhere in your home, create one dedicated spot — a drawer, a bin, a shelf — stocked with everything you need for May events. Gift bags in three sizes. Tissue paper. Blank gift tags. A good pen. A few gender-neutral kid gifts in the $10-15 range. Thank-you card packs. Disposable serving trays for potluck contributions. Snack-size zip bags for treat days.

This drawer sounds small. It is not small. It’s the thing that means you’re never driving to Target at 8pm because your kid just told you there’s a party tomorrow. Stock it once. Use it all month.

4. Set a Maycember Budget before May sets it for you. Most moms I know spend $300-500 in May without making a single intentional financial decision. It happens in increments: a teacher gift here, a field trip fee there, a last-minute party contribution, a banquet ticket, a spirit day outfit.

Before May starts, look at your list and assign a dollar amount to each category. Teacher gifts: $X. Field trips: $X. Parties: $X. Give yourself a total number and hold to it. When you’ve decided in advance, every spending moment becomes a simple check against a plan — not a guilt-ridden impulse decision at the register.

5. Learn to say no before May asks. Every yes in May costs you somewhere else — in time, in energy, in presence. The month is full of things that feel mandatory but aren’t. Decide now, before you’re in the moment, what you’re opting out of this year:

• You don’t have to volunteer for every event. Pick one that matters to you and let the rest go.

• Handmade or elaborate teacher gifts are not required. Thoughtful is enough. Store-bought is enough.

• You are allowed to want something specific for Mother’s Day — and to say so out loud before everyone else fills your day with their plans for you.

• Guilt over store-bought treats, imperfect gifts, or skipped sign-ups is optional. You can put it down.

From One Mom to Another

The puppy, for what it’s worth, stayed. We figured it out. She’s three years old now and deeply embedded in our family in the way only dogs can be.

But I think about that May a lot. Not with shame — with clarity. Because it showed me exactly what happens when the logistics aren’t held by a system: they get held by your nervous system instead. And your nervous system has better things to do.

Prep now means presence later. That’s the whole point.

These are life skills. Not business skills.

And as her mom — the Crane Mother in me — I’ll continue to stand beside her. Guiding. Protecting. But also gently pushing when I see what she’s capable of becoming.

I want to tell you something I don’t think anyone ever told my mother.

I have very few photographs of her. And I treasure each and every one of them more than almost anything I own.

My mother was beautiful. She was gracious. She was an extraordinary mother to her four children. I want my own children to know that about her. I want to hand them a photograph and say, this is the woman who raised me.

And I can. But just barely.

My parents were first-generation immigrants, building the American dream the only way they knew how. In a restaurant called China Garden. They were not too busy for photographs. They were pouring every ounce of themselves into a future their own parents had never been given.

So the photographs I have are mostly of the children. School pictures. A birthday here and there. Almost none of my mother in her kitchen. Almost none of my father on the restaurant floor. But I do have one of the two of them together inside the place that was our whole world.

I have my mother’s smile. I have my father’s drive. They taught me to work hard and pay attention to the details. And the handful of photographs I do have of them? I treasure each one more than I know how to say.

The ache I didn’t expect

Now that I am the one standing in a kitchen at 7 a.m., making coffee in the quiet before the rest of the house stirs, I finally understand…

You cannot photograph what you are trying to survive. You cannot photograph what you are trying to build.

My parents were holding the whole family up, in a country that did not speak their first language, inside a business that required every hour they had. Of course they did not also pick up a camera and point it back at themselves.

I understand it. And it still aches. That ache is what set me on the road I have been walking for twenty years. And it is the reason I am writing to you today.

What I have learned behind the camera

When I started photographing families professionally, I assumed the hardest part of the job would be the children. I was wrong.

The hardest part, by far, has been the mother. Not because mothers are difficult. Because mothers disappear.

You know what I mean. You book the shoot. You pick the outfits. You iron the shirt, wipe the jam off the cheek, remember the lint roller. You are the engine of the entire morning.

And then the camera comes out. And without being asked, almost as a reflex, you take three steps to the left and you say:

“Oh, don’t worry about me. Just get the kids.”

I have heard that sentence at nearly every session I have ever photographed. From women I adore. From women who are the beating heart of their families. From women whose children, one day, are going to reach for a photograph of their mother and wish, more than anything, that there were more.

Every time I hear it, I think of my own mother, standing in a restaurant kitchen that no one ever thought to photograph her inside of. And I think:

Not on my watch.

What a photograph is NOT

Mama, I am not asking you to post more. I am not asking you to perform. I am not asking you to pretty yourself up for anyone.

A photograph is not:

• A highlight reel.

• A post.

• A performance of a life you want other people to believe you are living.

• About how you look today.

• About vanity.

What a photograph IS

A photograph is:

• A bridge between generations.

• A physical object that will outlive you.

• Evidence, for your children, that you were here as a person, not just as a service provider.

• A gift to a future version of someone who will, one day, desperately want to see your face again.

If you take nothing else from this letter, take this:

You are not being photographed for now. You are being photographed for later.

A short history of how we ended up here

You should know it has not always been this way.

For most of photography’s life, being photographed was an event. You dressed up. You sat still. You sat together. The whole family was in the picture because the whole production was too much work to leave anyone out.

Then, in 1900, Kodak released the Brownie camera. One dollar. Ten million units sold in the first five years. For the first time in human history, a woman could photograph her own children, in her own home, on an ordinary weekday.

That was the moment family photography began. And it was also the moment mothers started disappearing from the frame, because Kodak marketed the Brownie to women. She was the one holding it. Every wave since has put the camera back in her hands. Polaroid. Camcorder. iPhone.

A hundred and twenty-five years later, here we are. Five billion photographs taken per day, worldwide. Roughly three thousand images on the average phone. And the mother, still standing behind the camera.

The cruel twist is that almost none of those images exist in a form anyone can hold. Only about 2% of the photos we take ever make it onto a wall. 86% of people have “precious” photo albums they never actually look at, mostly because those albums are trapped on a dead phone or an old hard drive.

We have more photographs than any generation in history, and fewer family photographs we can touch.

7 reasons to step in the frame

Pin these to the fridge if you need to. Read them when you are about to take three steps to the left.

1. Your children need to see your face. Not the back of your head. Not the arm holding the camera. One day, they will reach for a picture of you, and whatever exists in that moment is what they will have forever.

2. It boosts their self-esteem. Literally. This is research. A Tulane study of fourth-graders found a 37% increase in self-esteem behaviors in children who regularly saw and handled photographs of themselves and their family. Children who grow up in homes with family photographs displayed feel more valued, more connected, and more loved.

3. You teach them that your presence matters. Not just your service. When you are only ever the one taking the photo, you quietly teach your children that you exist to make things happen for them. When you step in the frame, you teach them that you, too, belong in the center of this family.

4. You model self-acceptance. Your daughter is watching how you treat your body. Your son is watching how you speak about your face. Every time you duck out of a photograph because you “don’t look good today,” a small person in your house learns that bodies like yours do not deserve to be remembered.

5. If you don’t do this, no one will. You are the memory keeper. If you leave yourself out, you will not be in the archive, because no one else is building it. Your absence will not be noticed by you. It will be noticed, painfully, by your children in forty years.

6. One day, they will want to remember your hands. The way your wedding ring sat on your finger. The way your hair fell when you leaned over the birthday cake. The way you held the baby on your hip without looking. These details only exist on film.

7. You are the bridge. Between the family that made you and the family you are making. Between your own mother (whether she is still here or not) and your own children. That bridge is load-bearing.

I saw this a lot in my own children (now 14 and 11) growing up. Watching closely. Trying things. Getting it wrong. Adjusting.

And what I’m realizing is this:

It’s not about finding the thing.
It’s about giving them enough exposure to discover the type of thing they’re drawn to.

Because not every child is going to be “into sports” or “into art.” Sometimes the clue is smaller than that.

They may be a builder.
A performer.
A collector.
A tinkerer.
An explorer.

The 10 Hobby Types to Expose Your Kids To

You don’t need all of these, but you don’t know which one will unlock something POWERFUL in them…

1. Create/Make

Kids who love to create something from nothing.

Think drawing, painting, bracelet making, clay, collage, sewing, even slime.

This is where imagination becomes tangible. You can almost watch their confidence grow in real time.

What this means:

• They may grow into someone who brings ideas to life… designers, artists, creators, storytellers.

• They likely feel a deep sense of ownership and pride in what they create.

• They may process emotions through creating, not always through words.

• They may learn best through trial, error, and iteration.

10. Serve

This is the one I think we overlook the most.

Cooking for others. Starting a small business. Making gifts. Helping neighbors.

This is where kids learn… what I love can actually help someone else.

What this means:

• They may grow into purpose-driven people… leaders, entrepreneurs, caregivers, change makers.

• They tend to think about others naturally, not just themselves.

• They often connect fulfillment with impact.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

This is where I think we overcomplicate it.

You don’t need a perfect system. I definitely don’t have one. But there are a few things that have shifted everything for us:

1. Leave things out

Not perfectly organized. Not tucked away.

Just… visible.

A sketchbook on the table. Beads in a bowl. Legos within reach.
Kids don’t start hobbies because we announce them. They start because something catches their eye.

2. Rotate instead of adding more

We think more options = more engagement.

It’s usually the opposite.

Put some things away. Bring them back a few weeks later. It makes old things feel new again.

3. Follow their energy

Not the outcome. Not the potential.

If they obsess over something for three days and drop it… that still counts.
We’re not building experts right now. We’re building awareness.

4. Let them be bored

This is the one I struggle with the most.

It’s so easy to fill the space. Suggest something. Offer a solution. But boredom is usually right before something clicks.

5. Say what you see

Instead of directing, just notice.

“I see you keep going back to building.”
“You really focus when you’re drawing.”

It helps them start to see themselves more clearly.

6. Don’t rush to make it serious

The second it becomes scheduled, evaluated, or competitive… something shifts.

Let it stay theirs for a while.

My Honest Take…

I’m still figuring this out. I still sign them up for too many things sometimes.
I still step in too quickly. I still wonder if I’m doing enough… or too much.

But I’m starting to trust this process more. Now that I have one child thinking about college and the other thinking about her desire to build a global brand, this is what I’m reminded:

Less pressure.
More exposure.
More space.

And just watching… a little more closely.

I Saw It Early

I think I’ve always known who Elise was, even before she had the words to tell me herself.

She was about three years old when I first noticed it in a way that stopped me. While other kids were running toward the playground, chasing each other and burning off energy, Elise would quietly drift somewhere else. She was drawn to color, to paint, to anything she could use to make something with her hands. I remember watching her sit with a set of paints, completely absorbed, mixing colors with the kind of focus that didn’t match her age.

There was one moment that has always stayed with me. I took her to an art museum, expecting exactly what you would expect with a toddler. I thought we would walk through quickly, maybe stop at a few things, and leave when she got restless.

But she didn’t rush.

She lingered. She stood in front of pieces and studied them in her own quiet way. She asked questions, not in full sentences yet, but in curiosity. She wanted to understand what she was seeing.

I remember standing there thinking, this is how she sees the world.

Not through movement, but through creation.

And that realization shifted something in me as a mother. I wasn’t just raising a child. I was raising a creative, and that meant my role wasn’t to redirect her into something else, but to make space for who she already was.

The Child I Once Was

And if I’m honest, I think part of that awareness comes from my own childhood.

Because I was that child too.

I was always drawn to creating. It felt natural to me, instinctive in a way I didn’t question. I would make things, imagine things, lose myself in it. But in the environment I grew up in, creativity was never something you built a life around. It was something extra. Something you did after the real work was done.

The focus was always on what was practical. Reading. Studying. Getting ahead. Doing the things that would lead to stability and success.

And I understand that now in a way I couldn’t back then.

Our parents were building a life in a new country without a roadmap. There was no safety net. No generational wealth. No clear path forward. Practicality wasn’t just encouraged, it was necessary.

But somewhere along the way, parts of me were redirected.

Not lost entirely, but softened. Quieted. Pushed to the edges.

And I think that’s why I see Elise the way I do. Why I notice what she’s drawn to, and feel this deep instinct to protect it. To not rush it. To not reshape it too quickly into something more “useful.”

Because as a Crane Mom, I’m learning how to raise differently.

Not by rejecting how I was raised, but by building on it. Taking the discipline and work ethic I was given, and pairing it with something I wish I had more of.

Space.

Space to explore.
Space to create.
Space to follow something simply because it feels like you.

Creating Space for Who They Already Are

That was the spirit behind Creativity Camp. It wasn’t born out of a business idea or a grand plan. It came from a very simple place. I wanted to create something that Elise would love. A space where creativity wasn’t something she squeezed in after everything else, but something she could fully immerse herself in.

It was there, around the age of 7, that she found jewelry making.

At first, it looked like what you would expect. Beads scattered across the table, colors that didn’t always match, patterns that only made sense to her. She would sit for long stretches of time, stringing and re-stringing, creating pieces for herself, for her friends, for anyone who would wear them.

There was no plan behind it. No end goal. Just the quiet joy of making something from nothing.

But what stood out to me wasn’t what she made. It was that she kept coming back to it.

When a Hobby Becomes Something More

By the time she was eight, that interest began to evolve in a way I didn’t expect.

She asked if she could sell them…

Not because I suggested it. Not because anyone told her to. But because somewhere along the way, she connected the dots between creating something and sharing it with others.

We set up a small pop-up shop. Simple. Low pressure. Just a table, her bracelets, and a chance to try.

What she learned that day had very little to do with selling.

She learned how to talk to people about something she created. She learned how to navigate nerves. She learned what it felt like to see someone choose something she made and love it.

It was never about the bracelets. It was about ownership.

Now she’s eleven, and it’s hard to believe she’s preparing to launch her first real brand. An actual e-commerce website. A collection she has designed and named herself.

And when I step back, this isn’t a story about entrepreneurship.

It’s a story about a hobby.

Why Hobbies Matter More Than We Think

I’ve been thinking about this more deeply lately, especially after reading the work of , who writes on her Substack about the role hobbies play in our lives as adults. One of the things she speaks to is how hobbies are not something extra. They are essential. They are one of the few spaces where we get to choose something simply because we want to, without it being measured or evaluated.

Research continues to support this. Adults who engage in hobbies consistently report lower stress, higher happiness, and a stronger sense of identity outside of work. Hobbies create a sense of flow. They reconnect us to curiosity in a world that constantly asks us to produce.

And what struck me most is this. We don’t suddenly need hobbies as adults.

We lose them.

Our kids are not born disconnected from curiosity. They are full of it. But over time, their world becomes more structured. More measured. More focused on performance.

And slowly, the things they once did just because they loved them begin to fade.

That’s why hobbies matter so much. Especially the analog ones. The ones that use their hands, their imagination, their time. Not because they lead somewhere.

But because they don’t have to.

Hobbies give our kids something rare. A sense of self that is not tied to achievement. A place where they can explore who they are without being told who they should be.

And if you pause and look closely, you’ll start to see them everywhere.

• It looks like a child who keeps reaching for markers and paper, drawing the same things over and over again. It looks like beads scattered across the table, returned to day after day. It looks like a child who loves baking with you, asking to do it again the next morning.

• Sometimes it looks like LEGO builds left out because they’re not quite done, or a child organizing small collections of things that matter to them. It might be dance routines in the living room, cartwheels in the backyard, or quietly sketching before bed.

• Other times, it’s even simpler than that. Helping you cook. Planting something and checking on it daily. Picking up a camera and starting to notice the world differently.

None of it looks extraordinary at first. But that’s the point.

Because these small, ordinary moments are often where something deeper is taking root.

The Three Hobbies I Keep Coming Back To

If I had to simplify it for myself as a parent, especially in a world that feels increasingly complex, I come back to three types of hobbies I want my kids to always have in their lives.

Not perfectly. Not all at once. But consistently, over time.

1. The first is Movement. Not structured performance. Not always a team or a competition. Just movement that keeps their body engaged. Running, dancing, flipping in the backyard, going for a walk. Anything that gets them out of their head and into their body.

   

2. The second is Creativity. Something that allows them to make. To imagine. To express. For Elise, it was beads and bracelets. For another child, it might be drawing, writing, building, music, or baking. This is where they learn to create something from nothing. Where they begin to see that their ideas have shape and form.

   

3. And the third is Learning. Reading. Exploring. Being curious about something just because they want to understand it better. Not for a test. Not for a grade. But because something sparked their interest and they followed it.

   

When I think about future-proofing our kids, it doesn’t start with doing more.

It starts here.

A child who moves their body.
A child who creates.
A child who stays curious enough to keep learning.

That combination is powerful. And bonus - it keeps them off the screens.

It Starts Small

When I look back at Elise’s journey, there wasn’t a single defining moment that set everything in motion. It was quieter than that. Just a series of small, consistent choices. To notice what she loved. To give her space to explore it. To resist the urge to rush it into something more.

We spend so much time trying to prepare our kids for the future, always thinking about what’s next and what will matter most.

But maybe it doesn’t start there.

Maybe it starts here. With a child, a small interest, and the space to stay with it long enough for it to become part of who they are.
