To delve into Picasso’s blue period is to delve into shades of sadness. Maggie Nelson’s ‘Bluets’ features 240 propositions shaded by the color blue itself. There is something consuming and earthly and great to the color blue, that speaks to the creative soul. When it comes to fashion, one shade or another will always be a staple for me. This current season of my life, I’m indulging in a rich, joyous, hearty tone.

While this familiar chaos sits just under the skin, and sometimes right on top of it, clothes have oscillated between an empowering escape and a vessel for comparison. It’s easy for the fashion landscape to rob us of our trust. To convince us that when our bodies don’t look the way an industry we’re supposed to love tells us they should, our bodies are betraying us.

I’m working on using getting dressed as less so the armor of my internal, and more an opportunity to align with how my body feels its best. A way to get back in cahoots. Instead of covering flaws or chasing a subjective idea of what’s flattering, I want to lean into combinations that bring me joy. As we build trust with our bodies, as we remember that we’re on the same team, clothes can be the drapery on top of our most beloved accessory.

So, something that has been helpful for me: the body becomes an item of adornment instead of a source of value. And when the body becomes an accessory, when it’s accepted for its beauty appreciated for its uniqueness, things get FUN.

Enter…tasteful upper buttcrack.

I love to look at what parts of the body are covered and showcased in tandem with clothing trends. I’ve been seeing a lot of open, flowy backs lately. Such low backs, in fact, that they hint at what sits just below. A cheeky backside.

Chalk it up to the cultural hangover of a US based world cup, or a childlike nostalgia for the times when we got dressed to sprint and zip and play…my inner soccer girl is clambering to get out.

This isn’t completely stolen valor, I swear, I was a pretty serious soccer player growing up. I don’t want to harp on this too much, for fear of sounding like a frat guy reliving his glory days before “that one knee injury” that toootally kept them from playing D1, but I do think it’s worth mentioning.

Stylistically speaking, in my personal opinion, the thing that makes an outfit really interesting is tension. This often comes in the form of something unexpected, but personal. A taste of what transpired:

It was probably the best weekend of my life, which was of course followed by immediately getting sick. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away. I took a week off of substack and instagram and tik tok and now i am FILLED to the brim with new ideas. So, strap in.

In the past few months, I’ve had a few new clients who I’ve asked to provide inspiration for their upcoming events/personal brand/wardrobe refreshes. I’ve noticed a lot of the same pinterest photos and instagram saves, despite clients’ very different lifestyles, tastes, and looks.

Inspiration feels homogenized because our libraries are more consolidated. Our algorithms are only so different, especially when they point towards selling us (more or less) the same stuff.

It’s encouraged me to think about my own archive, the things that layer into my own sense of personal style and taste. What worlds have stuck with me more than the pins I’ve saved in recent months or the tumblr images forever etched into my mind?

My Personal Taste Library

Old Disney Animation

Maybe it’s the simplicity of a two dimensional world…maybe its the notably hand drawn imperfections in an era of AI…whatever it is, I’ve been addicted to old Disney animation. I recently rewatched the original 101 Dalmatians from the ‘60’s, and it sent me down a rabbit hole. I love the way every outfit looks like a fashion sketch. It soothes my soul, and it has been a source of inspiration for all of my aesthetic choices lately, especially while designing wedding assets.

La Piscine & European Summer Bohemia

Sunsoaked and scantily clad. I’ve said it on here before, but the movie La Piscine changed my life. Somewhere between a girlish Jane Birkin and a goddess-like Romy Schneider - I got a taste of how I wanted to feel and what that could look like in clothing form. This old-world, retro, bohemian style offers a well of inspiration that never fails me.

The 2000’s Cartoon Mean Girl

It’s niche, but it’s real. Regina from Total Drama Island and Paulina from Danny Phantom forever shaped my clothing choices. They may be cruel, but they’re incredibly self possessed, and their outfits shout it from the rooftops. And they’re brunettes! Fine! That’s probably partially responsible for my loyalty. In those days, blondes got all the glory. These girls had an edge; a feminine yet cool, might-beat-you-up-while-wearing-a-mini-skirt edge.

But the sheerness, the skin, the blatant sexuality I’ve been seeing in recent campaigns and celebrity closets don’t feel subversive at all. They feel expected. I’m sure this is linked to the rise of GLP-1’s and the return of skinniness, as bodies are once again rewarded for being smaller and smaller. The more body that’s showing, and the less body that’s actually there, suddenly feels like proof of value.

When all the fabric has been stripped away, all of the parts have been shown…where do we go? There’s nothing new about the marketing tactic sex sells, but when it’s simply a selling ploy, or a means to showcase + reinforce the new body standard, the subtleness and suggestion of true sensuality falls away.

So while everything is sexy, nothing is erotic.

Gen z may be wearing see through mini skirts, but we (yes “we”, another hill I will die on) are having much less sex than other generations. Like, every other generation in recent history. It would be extremely reductive and naive to wrap this all up as the driving cause of this phenomenon, but it’s certainly a contributing factor, if not simply a societal indicator.

While I can’t control the tides of the industry, nor the sexual practices of high schoolers, I can offer a crumb of advice that I would give to my clients. Eroticism is based in feeling. Wear things that make you feel good. Feeling good and feeling sexy is often one in the same. So is feeling good and looking good.

Why are we so drawn to mermaids right now? My theory is that the intricacy of seashell clothing, it’s tactile quality, and the labors of love that beading and scale-like materials require, make us feel part of the process. In an age of AI (yawn), fashion is the food for our nostalgic hunger, an opportunity to feel like a little girl again. A mother of pearl top that feels plucked from nature, imperfectly sewn together, and splayed across our body is maybe as close to a Disney movie as modern life allows.

Julia Roberts’ character is given an unlimited budget to turn herself into a presentable lady, where instead of covering herself in restrictive-wear or blindly taking orders, she flourishes. Her transformation feels more that of a royal directing buzzing handmaids, to that of a doll dressed up by the man with a credit card sitting across from her. Completely self possessed.

I’m not going to argue that Pretty Woman is actually a feminist masterpiece, but I did find echoes of empowerment in the way the hero moved through the world with style.

In a time where modern fashion is once again flirting with conservatism (the romanticization of tradwife core, to start…), let us all take inspiration from Roberts’ portrayal, and cherrypick the elements that make us feel good.

As I stood in my grandma’s house, in front of her floor to ceiling mirror with my mom and grandma next to me - these two women from whom I came from, whose marriages I came from, I felt the intimacy of a dress passed down. I ran my hand over the beading and wondered what drew my grandma, who had gone dress shopping with her mother in Arlington, Virginia, to that very dress. I smiled at the lace that my aunt added to cover the mud caked on from my moms wedding, where it had poured all night, and I pictured my parents dancing in the rain.

All this to say, despite the frequent superficiality and excess surrounding weddings, there’s something especially poignant about the dress. Something maternal and shared, tender and empowering.

But despite my dedication to not being very “girly,” I always loved clothes, and was always quite particular about what I wore on my body. One rule has remained consistent throughout my life, without much thought as to why: I hate pink. It didn’t feel like a serious color. It definitely wasn’t cool, and outside of the barbie affiliation, I never thought it looked good on me.

But as is the case with growth in any aspect of life, it’s important to turn inwards. To shun an entire category in order to reject the associations with it, is to be a hypocrite. My takeaway: PINK CAN BE COOL.

This One of Others dress was the impetus for my self analysis of pink prejudice. I felt the familiar pang of online shopping excitement when something in my gut immediately whispered “but it’s not your color.” Well now it is, and I love the 60’s playfulness coated in modern simplicity.

Similarly playing with retrocity (not sure if that’s a word, but it definitely should be), this time with a 90’s silhouette and a sexy sheer twist. I love everything from Alfie Paris.

Weddings have become 3+ outfit affairs, no one knows what “springtime cocktail formal” means, and high school seniors don’t go to the mall to hunt for prom dresses. The times are a-changing!

Rental platforms like Pickle and RTRW offer some assistance in the event preparation department, but also seem to set the stage for us to see the same few trending dresses over and over again.

I’m a firm believer in outfit repeating. A slowly grown, thoughtfully curated selection of dresses will serve you better over time. Here’s a roundup of unique pieces and to add to your collection, that you (probably) won’t see on other guests.

No onto the state of shoes:

Kitten heels have finally been freed from the delicate point of a mini stilleto. Wedges are back, and I can’t wait to flounce around the streets of New York City this spring/summer without a single worry over subway grates. I can’t get these ones from Anonymous Copenhagen off of my mind.

When I picture a wedge sandal, I can almost smell the asphalt of my high school graduation. A wedge feels nostaglic, practical, verging on utilitarian. The type of heel your mom would let you wear in 2016.

And with that special feeling in the air, I can only imagine one natural progression. Enter: the gladiator sandal.

While the last few rounds of warm weather saw the rise of ballet flats, shoes of femininity and lightness, things are starting to feel heavier. The fashion industry (like everything else) feels slightly under duress. Perhaps it’s due to an AI induced identity crisis, where the only answer is to start swinging. Into the arena we go!

With Coachella right around the corner, and a 2016 buzz around all of our heads, I can only imagine we’ll be seeing a lot of this style in the months to come. It would be low hanging fruit to dwell on the parallel of Coachella as a modern Gladiator ring. Influencers as the heroes/villians of our entertainment, our explore pages as a stage for public opinion…like I said, low hanging fruit.

For a classic pair, Michael Kors is providing full fledged nostalgia.

For a chic-er, more modern take, there’s A Emery.

Some would argue that charging $200 for a beaded bracelet constitutes highway robbery. To that I say, yes and. This brand “thoughtfully sources unique, globally crafted beads, often prioritizing upcycled, natural, and found materials, resulting in limited-edition and one-of-a-kind pieces imbued with worldly sentiments.” Their pieces are so artfully crafted, so nostalgic and whimsical, I think they get away with it.

Shannon Bond makes these artistic, interesting pieces that somehow still feel understated. A stylists’ dream brand, the jewelry uniquely ties together outfits without overpowering them, which is harder than it sounds.

You might not know this brand, but you’ve probably seen their glasses. On Hailey Beiber, for example. This is an LA based brand run by a husband and wife duo (cute), that just makes great everyday glasses.

My sister in law (shoutout Anna ily) likes to send daily snapchats of things she's grateful for. Sometimes they’re heady and existential, other times minute and ordinary. One time she ended her list with the dash of cinnamon in her coffee. The next day I put cinnamon on my latte and it made me think of her and other things I’m grateful for and also it made my latte taste better.

So during this universally chaotic, oppressively cold, and unnaturally exhausting week, here is a moment of appreciation for some things I currently own that make my life a little cozier and happier.

1. Starting with this fuzzy bathrobe from Ugg.

   
   I have it in the color below, and it’s changed my life. I wake up and throw it on. I look forward to getting out of a hot shower, because I get to wrap up in this wearable blanket. I couldn’t recommend a fluffy robe more.

   

   
   

2. A Leatherology notebook.
   
   I didn’t think I’d get to an age where organization calms me down, but here we are. I use it as a journal - planner - scratch paper - to do list - combo, and planning suddenly feels chic.

   

   
   

3. Clean burning candles
   
   I did it again. I went down an obsessive rabbit hole. This time, it was over the danger of scented candles. I work from home most of the time and I love to burn candles and it’s currently too cold to open a window. So after some research, I learned that “clean burning” means a soy or coconut wax base with an 100% cotton wick. This one is from Painted Swan in Carroll Gardens, but I’m sure you can find another candle with the same requirements.

   

4. Bombas socks

   
   For the first time in my adult life, I splurged and bought socks that weren’t the cheapest available on Amazon. This pair feels high quality the second it touches a toe, hits at the perfect quarter height, and doesn’t look too sporty.

   

   
   

5. My current morning concoction

   
   I’m on a mission to not drink coffee until after I’ve eaten a full breakfast. It’s maybe the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but I’m soldiering through. I’ve been making a lemon tea and throwing some dried goji berries straight into the hot water for my first sip of the morning.

   

   
   This one is teetering on gratitude because it’s lightly torturing me, but I’m trying to be grateful for the potential long term benefits of not sending my hormones directly into a jet fuel induced cortisol spike the second I wake up every day. :-)
   

6. Pilates by Izzy
   
   I stumbled across this girls’ youtube page, and have been loving her (free!) videos on days (weeks) I don’t make it to the gym. Who doesn’t want a tanned up Australian baddie coaching you through a workout as you refuse to leave your house?!

After marveling at how fresh every item felt, one of the salespeople told me “well, it’s summer here first, so we’re always 6 months ahead. Stylistically speaking.” Everyone nodded in agreement. Australia experiences summer first.

This struck me as almost comically cocky. ‘Who says they get summer first? Maybe they’re perpetually 6 months behind!’ my red blooded self scoffed.

After a few years in the fashion industry, and a lot of time researching where the best clothes come from in each category, I’m here to set the record. Summer definitely hits Australia first.

And the Australians are currently designing with a particular color in mind: ice blue.

(Trigger warning for the US East Coast readers - I’m sorry to bring up ice during this cold stint. Try to think of it as a brief respite…a warmer month fantasy…)

With the rising popularity of peer-to-peer and marketplace rental services, closets feel more transient than ever. Companies like Pickle and Rent the Runway are making luxury more accessible, with a slight eco friendly slant. It’s the current, ethical version of buying something → wearing it with tags → then returning it for a partial refund.

Isle of Monday is using this modern model for vintage. Started by sourcing connoisseurs Janelle Gray and Gabriella Carota, the platform (still currently in Beta) offers some of the most beautiful rare vintage I have ever seen.

The goal is to host a range of sizes and styles from different eras on the site available for rent. Each piece really feels like a thoughtfully chosen part of a forever collection, instead of a trendy interim.

Similar to how Vivrelle allows members to rent luxury handbags and jewelry for a monthly fee, the soon-to-launch company Reservd will let users rent diamonds.

Reservd maintains an arsenal of jewelry made from lab grown diamonds. Not to brag, but I spent an iced out week with these beauties. *This isn’t an ad, I was just lucky enough to take some pieces for a test drive to make content.

While rental platforms don’t contribute to an individuals’ long term wardrobe, they can still be a useful tool in developing your personal style. The better you understand why you like the things you like, and the more you love your reliable staples, the easier you can slot in fun statement pieces for rent. It can scratch an impulsive splurge itch, without the repercussions.
