We just got back from a family trip to Scotland, and as an artist, writer, and avid journaler, I always get a ton of questions asking:

  1. What art supplies do you travel with and what do you put everything in?

  2. How do you decide what to document and the layout?

  3. Do you journal in public, or back at your hotel?

So let’s get into it! This is part one. If you’re following along inside my new book, The Daily Play, Days 148-154 are all about travel journaling. I’ll do a video of me completing those prompts for paid subscribers next!

A peek at what’s inside my travel kit

1. WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO YOU TRAVEL WITH?

I know how overwhelming an art store can be. These are my tried and true absolute FAVOURITE travel-friendly art supplies for every trip, with links to my recommendations.

This kit includes my favourite travel paint palette, paintbrush, two pens, and a pencil case

  • Blank Journal/Sketchbook:
    Recommended size: Landscape size A5, or Square (around 6-8 inches)

    Recommended material: Choose a journal/sketchbook with thick blank pages

    specifically made for mixed media OR ‘hot press watercolor’ (smooth).
    Avoid any ‘cold press watercolor paper’ because it could fray your brush pens

    My recommendation:
    A5 Etchr Lab Sketchbook

  • Brush pen for calligraphy and drawing:

    Towbow Fudenosuke Brush Pen - 3 Pack
    OR
    Colourful 10 pack

  • Round Watercolour Paintbrush(es)
    Bring at least two

    Shape: Round

    Size: Having a few sizes can be helpful but the two sizes I’d recommend would be

    a watercolour round Size 1 and 4
    My recommendation:

    Winsor & Newton Cotman Round set

  • Watercolor Paint Palette (travel friendly)
    Any “half-pan watercolor set” will do for travel

    My recommendation:
    Sakura Koi Pocket Field Sketch Kit OR the palette that comes in my Daily Play Art Kit

  • Fineliner Pens (Waterproof)

    These can be used for the journaling part of your sketchbook and for adding

    drawings/detail to your paintings
    My recommendation:
    Sakura Pigma Micron Pens in black ink, any size

  • Travel printer

    Uses no ink technology and prints on sticky back paper so you can add the photos right to your journal! SO cool.
    My recommendation:
    Canon Ivy

  • Collapsible Water Cup

  • A Case to hold everything

    I actually use an electronics case repurposed to hold my art supplies. My exact model isn’t available anymore but the dimensions are 7.08 inches x 9.6 inches x 3.93 inches. You could use a book sleeve or a large zippered pouch too.

Other extras that I love to pack:

  • Bulldog clips to keep your journal pages open - this fun vintage hand design, or this metal clip

  • Fountain pens - I’m a calligraphy instructor with Montblanc, the makers of

    the world’s finest pens, so I’m partial to a Meisterstuck! A fine to medium nib

    on any fountain pen is really fun to write AND draw with so it’s a versatile tool

  • A water brush, which is a paintbrush that holds water in its handle and

    distributes as you paint so that you don’t have to use a separate cup. I like

    these best for brush lettering, less so for actual watercolor painting

  • White gelly roll pen for adding white details/reflections to your paintings

  • Paper towel sheets

  • Watercolor postcards - peep how I used them on a trip here

  • Kneaded eraser for no eraser shavings! and a sand eraser for erasing light
