😭

At what point during the cleaning does that conversation even start?

Anyway...

She had instant regret, kept asking ChatGPT how to get rid of it, and couldn’t stop laughing because she was so surprised by how... surprised she looked.

I was laughing so hard that I started pulling my own forehead up trying to recreate the look.

Very mature behavior from both of us. We completely lost it. 😭

Then I told her, “Honestly? I liked your lines.”

She looked at me and asked, “What’s beautiful about lines?”

And just like that... My brain heard that question and said, “Excellent. See you at 4 a.m.” Fast forward a few hours, and I somehow reached the conclusion that “anti-aging” is the weirdest phrase we’ve ever collectively agreed on.

Think about it.

Anti-aging?

Who’s in charge of naming these things? I’d like to have a word 😅

Imagine if nature had a marketing department.

“Introducing... anti-sunsets.”

“Anti-Autumn.”

“Anti-time.”

“Anti-Mondays” 😛 Okay... this one can stay.

We’d think they’d lost it.

But anti-aging?

Yeah, sounds perfectly reasonable! Whoever came up with it clearly had excellent marketing skills. Because somehow... We all bought it. (Emotionally and financially.)

Well!

Turns out, all it takes is one innocent question to ruin a perfectly good night’s sleep😭

The rest somehow became a Soul Note. I mean the ordinary moments that make up most of our days.

For example, someone says something and I get annoyed. Or something doesn’t go the way I expected, and I react. Sometimes immediately, sometimes just in my head.

Then later, when everything settles down, I think about it again.

Why did that bother me so much?

“Did I actually choose that?”

Or did I just do what I’ve always done? Just another impulsive reaction.

I’ve noticed that the first place my mind wants to go is outward.

It’s because of them. It’s because of what happened. Life has been unfair.

And honestly, sometimes that’s true. People hurt us. Things happen. And their effects can stay with us for years.

But over the last few years, I’ve found myself asking a different question:

Am I reacting to what’s happening right now?

Or am I reacting to an old wound instead?

That question changed a lot for me because that’s the only part that’s actually mine.

I can’t change what happened. I can’t rewrite my childhood, and I can’t make people behave differently. But I can decide whether I keep living from those old reactions and patterns.

And that’s why one experience changes one person and doesn’t seem to change someone else. The experience is only one part of it. What happens afterwards matters too. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

New behaviour doesn’t appear overnight. It takes time, and so does becoming a different version of yourself. At least that’s what I’ve found.

There are still moments when I realise my ego got there first. Sometimes I only understand my reaction hours later. Sometimes I look back at a conversation and think, “That wasn’t really about what just happened.”

But I don’t automatically believe the first version of the story my mind comes up with anymore. I get curious first. I want to understand what’s actually happening.

Was that really me?

Or was it an old pattern reacting for me?

The interesting part is… it doesn’t happen very often anymore, even though life never stopped testing me. The difference is that I notice much sooner when I’m no longer the one driving. And sometimes, even when I know exactly what’s happening, I still choose to react.

At least now it’s a choice.

And I think that’s the question I want to keep asking myself for the rest of my life.

Who’s actually driving?

Thanks for reading Saraa's Substack! Fireflies. Tiny sparks floating in the dark like secrets the earth was whispering to the sky.

I’d never been close to nature before. I’m a city girl, raised on noise, neon, and pavement. But that night by the lake, somewhere at the foot of the Himalayas, something in me shifted.

Thanks for reading Saraa's Substack! A woman selling tea by the roadside smiled as she passed me a steaming cup, her bracelets chiming softly. The mountains loomed above me, massive and quiet, as if they were listening.

And then, just like that, I saw them: tiny creatures pulsing with their own light. Flicker. Pause. Flicker again. They were everywhere, scattered across the darkness like stars had slipped down to dance on the grass.

I froze. I’d never seen anything like it. And yet, they were so ordinary here, a small thing to everyone else, a miracle to me. It was the first time nature touched not just my eyes but my heart and soul.

People talk about magic as if it’s all sweetness and sparkle, but that night was a different kind of magic, a full, honest one. It held everything: beauty and stillness, chaos and noise, the raw and the majestic. Like the Himalayas themselves, rising out of simple streets where life unfolds slowly, yet stretching up to touch the sky.

That country, its people, its mountains, its quiet nights hugged me in a way I didn’t know a place could. I didn’t arrive there open to life. I was just moving through my days, not yet awake to possibility. But the streets, the mountains, the smiles of strangers, the fireflies, they cracked something open in me. They showed me that beauty doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it flickers softly in the dark and waits for you to notice.

Since that night, I’ve never been the same. The world feels wider, deeper. Even pain feels like part of the magic now because it’s all connected: love, loss, stillness, chaos, joy. The rawness of life can be so achingly beautiful, like a mountain rising from a humble street, like a firefly lighting up the night.

I am grateful for that experience. It was the start of my journey, not just of traveling, but of living. Of seeing. Of being seen.

Sometimes we think we have to go far or do something extraordinary to feel transformed. But maybe all it takes is a night by the water, in a place that’s new to you, with tiny lights floating in the dark.

Tell me in the comments: what was your “firefly moment”? A place or experience that cracked you open?

Awake to a fleeting life

One of the strangest things about You hear it everywhere, in books, podcasts, motivational speeches, spiritual teachers, life coaches, and philosophers.

“Life is short.”
“Enjoy the moment.”
“Focus on the journey.”

They sound poetic, nice, and almost decorative.
The truth that life is temporary should be so powerful, but it is repeated so often that many now roll their eyes when they hear it.
“Yes, yes. Life is short. I know.”
But knowing something and living with that awareness are two very different things, because the moment we return to our daily reality, the idea becomes much harder to practice.
Most people wake up early, rush to work, crawl through traffic, worry about money, and juggle bills and expectations. They carry responsibilities: children to raise, parents to support, and so on.
When told to “enjoy the journey,” many quietly think: Easy for you to say.
Because their journey does not always feel like freedom.
Sometimes it feels like survival, a series of responsibilities, and unfinished tasks.
And here lies the paradox.
The difficulty of daily life does not necessarily mean that life itself is wrong.
Responsibilities can feel heavy, routines can feel exhausting, and yet the structure of a life, work, family, and commitments can still be meaningful.
The problem is not always the structure.
The problem is how easily we lose ourselves inside it.
Here we risk losing real meaning. The cliché can overshadow our reality.
Living with the awareness that life is temporary does not mean escaping reality.
It does not mean abandoning responsibility or pretending money, work, and stability don’t matter.
We live inside systems, and routines.
For many people, stepping completely outside of those structures would bring more chaos than freedom.
The idea that real freedom is to quit your nine-to-five job.
Leave the system.
Break the structure.
Refuse to be a “slave.”
People proudly declare they walked away from the corporate world, and sometimes they look at those who didn’t as if they hadn’t awakened yet.
But this creates another kind of pressure.
Equating quitting structure with freedom is just another oversimplified, cliché narrative that can distort what meaningful living truly means.
Because there is no universal formula for a meaningful life.
Some people thrive in entrepreneurship.
Some people feel alive building something of their own.
Others find stability, pride, even purpose in structured work.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
A nine-to-five job is not inherently bad.
For some, it brings stability or security.
For others, it is simply a way to support the life they are building outside of work.
Not everyone needs to escape the system in order to live a meaningful life.
And not everyone who has left it has automatically found freedom.
Perhaps the goal was never to escape life, or to chase some abstract version of freedom.
Perhaps the real goal is simply to remain awake in the life you have chosen.
Because whatever life you arrive at through awareness, whether it is entrepreneurship, a nine-to-five job, raising a family, building a business, or something entirely different, that life is yours.
There is no universal right path, only the one you are awake enough to recognize as your own.
Always remember that your life moves forward because you choose to carry it forward.
You wake up.
You work.
You take care of the people you love.
You solve problems.
You continue.
And often, nobody fully sees the effort it takes.
Nobody knows the quiet strength it takes to keep going through ordinary days.
Only you know that.
And because of that, one of the most important things we can do is return to ourselves.
At the end of the day, when the noise quiets down, you might sit with a cup of tea, breathe for a moment, and remind yourself:
I showed up today.
I carried my life forward.
Thank yourself for the effort that nobody else fully understands.
Because the person who truly knows the weight of your days the most… is you.
These small moments of returning to yourself may seem simple.
But they protect something essential.
They remind you that even inside responsibilities, routines, and systems, your life is still yours.
You are not only living for work and obligations.
You are a human being moving through a brief and temporary existence, doing your best within the structure of the world you were born into.
And every now and then, return to yourself and remember:
You are still here.
You are still living it.
And you are still the one carrying your story forward.

Honestly?

We should live with more compassion for our human experience and be so patient with ourselves as we navigate SO MANY thoughts, emotions, relationships, expectations, and still love, dream, and create.

Thanks for reading Saraa's Substack!
