class="fake-button">

The Economic Season

This is almost textbook Economic Autumn.

During Economic Spring, capital tends to flow toward rebuilding, productive investment and emerging technologies.

During Autumn, the financial system increasingly learns how to extract more value from existing assets.

Debt grows.

Asset values rise faster than incomes.

Financial claims multiply faster than productive capacity.

Eventually society begins confusing rising asset prices with rising wealth.

The two are not the same.

The extraordinary period of near-zero interest rates after the Global Financial Crisis accelerated this process.

Instead of allowing weak investments to be cleared and capital to migrate toward more productive uses, policymakers repeatedly reduced the cost of capital.

The immediate pain was reduced.

But the structural imbalance grew larger.

Historical Context

This is where Chancellor’s argument connects naturally with Schumpeter.

Schumpeter described capitalism as a process of Creative Destruction.

Old business models fail.

Bad investments are liquidated.

Capital and labour are released.

New technologies and new enterprises replace them. 🌱

That destruction is uncomfortable, but it serves an economic purpose.

When policymakers continually prevent that adjustment through extraordinarily cheap credit, they can suppress part of the destruction without necessarily producing more creation.

Zombie companies survive.

Unproductive assets remain overvalued.

Land prices rise.

Speculation becomes increasingly rational because financing remains cheap.

Instead of recycling capital, it becomes trapped.

The very policy intended to stabilize capitalism can therefore weaken its regenerative mechanism.

The Human Consequence

The effects eventually reach ordinary households.

Young families face home prices increasingly detached from wages.

Savers are pushed toward greater risk simply to earn a return.

Businesses discover that purchasing property or financial assets can be more rewarding than investing in productive capacity.

Governments become accustomed to financing deficits at unusually low rates.

Investors become accustomed to rising valuations.

Debt becomes easier to accumulate than to repay.

None of this feels dangerous while asset prices are rising.

That is precisely why late-cycle financialization can persist for so long.

What Comes Next

❄️ Economic Winter begins when the system can no longer increase leverage fast enough to support the valuations created during Autumn.

Then the process reverses.

Credit growth slows.

Asset prices encounter affordability constraints.

Weak borrowers become visible.

Bad investments are exposed.

Capital begins searching for productivity rather than merely financial appreciation.

This is the painful side of Creative Destruction.

But it is also where the next economic spring begins.

The productive technologies already developing beneath the financial economy—AI, robotics, biotechnology, advanced energy, automation, and decentralized systems—do not disappear when an asset bubble deflates.

Quite the opposite.

Clearing obsolete capital can eventually create the conditions for those technologies to spread throughout the economy.

🔥 Destruction clears the field.

🌱 Innovation plants the next cycle.

What Would Prove This Wrong?

The thesis should remain falsifiable.

If decades of exceptionally low interest rates ultimately produce:

sustained productivity acceleration,

falling leverage relative to incomes,

improving housing affordability,

stronger business investment,

and asset values supported primarily by underlying cash flows,

then the argument that cheap money primarily encouraged financialization would need to be reconsidered.

But if debt remains elevated, productivity disappoints, and asset valuations repeatedly require renewed monetary support, Chancellor’s warning becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.

The Closing Line

The great irony of the post-2008 era may be this:

The policy designed to prevent the last crisis helped construct the fragility behind the next adjustment.

The rescue did not eliminate Creative Destruction.

It delayed it.

And by delaying it, we may have increased the amount of destruction required before the next great period of creation can begin.

Economic Winter May Destroy Wealth Claims Not Human Ingenuity

Worldwide patent estate.

It is the long-term growth in worldwide patent activity.

And there is one important detail that makes this chart much more meaningful:

It is plotted on a logarithmic scale.

Why the Log Scale Matters

Most people are used to normal charts.

On a normal chart, equal vertical distances represent equal numerical increases.

A move from 10 to 20 looks very different from a move from 1 million to 2 million because the absolute numbers are so different.

A logarithmic chart looks at growth differently.

It gives similar visual weight to similar percentage changes.

So: 10 → 20, 100 → 200, 1 million → 2 million are all treated as comparable moves because each is a doubling.

That makes log charts extremely useful when examining long periods of compounding.

A normal chart tells us mostly how large something has become.

A log chart helps tell us whether it has been growing at a persistent compounded rate.

If something grows exponentially, it often curves sharply upward on a normal chart.

But on a logarithmic chart, sustained exponential growth appears much closer to a straight rising line.

That is what makes this patent chart so interesting.

It is not merely telling us that there are more patents today than there were 100 years ago.

It is suggesting that humanity’s recorded inventive activity has been compounding across generations.

The Signal

At the same time, several of the postwar era's great growth engines are weakening.

Population growth is slowing.

Credit growth is becoming increasingly constrained by already enormous debt burdens.

Asset prices in many economies have risen far beyond the incomes required to support them.

Those are classic characteristics of a mature Economic Autumn 🍂 approaching the possibility of Economic Winter ❄️.

Yet underneath the financial system, something very different continues to happen.

Humanity keeps innovating.

Artificial intelligence is advancing.

Robotics is improving.

Solar and energy storage continue expanding.

Biotechnology is progressing.

Computational power continues spreading.

Advanced materials, nuclear technologies and automation are developing simultaneously.

The financial cycle may be aging.

The innovation cycle is not.

The Economic Season

Economic Autumn is dominated by financialization.

Credit increasingly flows toward existing assets.

Real estate appreciates faster than incomes.

Financial claims multiply.

Leverage rises.

Eventually, incomes can no longer service those claims.

Economic Winter begins when those accumulated financial promises must be written down, restructured or destroyed.

But this is where an important distinction must be made:

A collapse in financial claims is not necessarily a collapse in productive knowledge.

A house can fall 40% in price without disappearing.

A stock can fall 70% without destroying the technology underlying the company.

Debt can default while scientific knowledge remains intact.

The financial structure can contract while civilization’s productive capability continues advancing.

Historical Context

This is deeply Schumpeterian.

🔥 Creative Destruction does not mean destruction for its own sake.

It means that old economic structures are displaced by superior technologies, businesses and methods of production.

Railways displaced older transport systems.

Electricity transformed manufacturing.

Automobiles reorganized cities.

Computers transformed information processing.

The Internet created an entirely new economic infrastructure.

Today AI, robotics, biotechnology and distributed energy may be building the foundations of the next transformation.

Each technological generation becomes an input into the next.

That creates something financial markets lack: a knowledge ratchet.

Financial wealth can disappear.

Knowledge generally accumulates.

Why Innovation Can Survive Financial Crisis

This is one of the most important insights in the chart.

Financial capital is cyclical.

Asset prices rise and fall.

Credit expands and contracts.

Banks lend aggressively and then retrench.

But knowledge behaves differently.

Once humanity knows how to build a transistor, sequence DNA, manufacture a solar cell or train a neural network, that knowledge does not simply vanish because the economy enters recession.

The rate of deployment may slow.

Funding may become harder.

Weak companies may disappear.

But the accumulated knowledge survives.

That is why civilization can experience severe depressions and still emerge with a larger stock of useful knowledge than before.

The Human Consequence

This may also change how we think about demographics.

The conventional argument says that slower population growth must permanently reduce economic growth.

That assumes output remains primarily dependent on the number of workers.

But technology changes the equation.

A farmer with machinery produces what once required dozens of workers.

A factory filled with robotics requires fewer people per unit of output.

A researcher using artificial intelligence may eventually possess the intellectual leverage previously available only to an entire department.

The critical variable therefore becomes less:

How many workers do we have?

and increasingly:

How much productive capability does each worker command?

That distinction could define the next LongWave.

What Comes Next

The extraordinary possibility is that several major constraints may be weakening at the same time:

🧠 AI attacks the information constraint.

⚡ Solar, storage, nuclear and potentially fusion attack the energy constraint.

🤖 Robotics attacks the labour constraint.

🧬 Biotechnology and advanced materials attack biological and material constraints.

Combine them and the next economic system could produce vastly more with fewer people and less dependence on continuous debt expansion.

This is why I increasingly believe Economic Winter should not automatically be interpreted as technological decline.

Winter may instead be the period during which an obsolete financial architecture is forced to adjust to a radically more productive technological foundation.

Destruction and creation can occur simultaneously.

What Would Prove This Wrong?

The thesis is falsifiable.

I would become less confident if we saw a sustained multi-decade deterioration in:

scientific discovery,

patent activity,

productivity-enhancing investment,

energy technology,

computation,

robotics,

biotechnology,

and new-company formation.

Patent counts themselves are not perfect.

Patent laws change.

Countries differ in filing practices.

China has contributed enormously to recent filing growth.

Companies sometimes file defensively or strategically.

So patents should be treated as one proxy for humanity’s expanding stock of knowledge—not as definitive proof by themselves.

But the broad pattern remains important.

The Closing Line

The great mistake of the coming Economic Winter may be confusing the destruction of yesterday’s wealth claims with the destruction of humanity’s ability to create tomorrow’s wealth.

🍂 Autumn accumulated the claims.

❄️ Winter clears the excess.

🌱 Spring grows from the technologies developing underneath it.

And the log chart shows why.

A normal chart shows how big innovation has become.

A log chart helps reveal whether it has been compounding across generations.

That is Kondratieff’s LongWave meeting Schumpeter’s Creative Destruction.

And the seeds of the next Spring may already be growing beneath the snow.
<div class="captioned-button-wrap" value, and economic rent) saw something more than 200 years ago that modern economies still struggle to confront:

Trade creates wealth. Land captures part of it.

Build a factory.
Invent a product.
Hire workers.
Ship goods across an ocean.

You have created something new.

But own the land underneath that factory—or the land around the growing city—and you can collect part of that rising prosperity without producing the innovation itself.

That is economic rent.

And here is the paradox of the modern economy:

We often tax and restrict production, while simultaneously subsidizing and protecting asset values.

Tariffs protect domestic producers.
Income taxes penalize labour.
Corporate taxes reduce returns on productive investment.

Meanwhile, land and housing receive enormous structural support through mortgage credit, tax preferences, zoning restrictions, government guarantees, and political resistance to falling prices.

Why?

Because the political incentives are asymmetric.

A cheaper imported appliance might save millions of households $50 each.

But nobody organizes a political movement around the cheaper toaster.

A 30% decline in housing prices is very different.

It immediately affects homeowners, mortgage lenders, banks, municipalities, developers, pension funds, and governments.

🏠 Asset inflation creates concentrated winners.
🛒 Cheap goods create dispersed benefits.

Concentrated interests organize.

Dispersed consumers rarely do.

That distinction matters most late in the Economic LongWave.

During Economic Spring 🌱, capital tends to flow toward rebuilding, infrastructure, productivity and new technologies.

During Economic Autumn 🍂, increasingly sophisticated financial systems learn how to capitalize future income streams into higher asset prices.

Credit expands.

Land values rise.

Property becomes collateral.

Higher collateral supports more borrowing.

More borrowing pushes land prices higher.

Eventually the economy begins rewarding the ownership of scarce assets more aggressively than the creation of productive capacity.

That is the transition from industrial capitalism toward financialization.

And it creates a dangerous political trap:

Governments become increasingly afraid to let asset prices fall because the financial system has become dependent on those inflated valuations.

This is where Ricardo meets Minsky—and ultimately Schumpeter.

Ricardo warned about economic rent.

Minsky explained how rising collateral values encourage increasingly fragile debt structures.

Schumpeter explained why old economic arrangements must eventually be dismantled before new productive systems can emerge.

🔥 Creative Destruction is not merely about replacing technologies.

Sometimes it means replacing the institutions, incentives and capital structures that protected the previous economic era.

That may become one of the defining questions of the coming Economic Winter ❄️:

Do governments continue protecting yesterday’s asset values—or begin directing capital toward tomorrow’s productive economy?

Because the next great LongWave expansion will probably not be built by making existing houses, land and financial claims ever more expensive.

It will be built through AI, robotics, advanced energy, biotechnology, decentralized systems, advanced manufacturing and entirely new industries.

🌱 The seeds of the next Spring are productive.

The challenge is allowing capital to leave the old economy and reach them.

Perhaps the real lesson from Ricardo is therefore much bigger than trade:

An economy becomes unhealthy when it rewards owning yesterday more than building tomorrow.

The Economic LongWave is a reader-supported publication. happening.

For decades, people easily dismissed solar.

It was expensive.

Its contribution to global energy production was statistically tiny.

Its limitations were obvious.

Anyone looking only at the existing energy system could reasonably conclude that solar would remain marginal.

Then the compounding continued.

And continued.

And continued.

By 2025, global solar generation had reached roughly 2,811 terawatt-hours.

From 2020 through 2025, solar generation compounded at approximately 26.7% annually.

That leads to an extraordinary thought experiment.

If solar simply maintained its 2020–2025 growth rate, its annual output would mathematically equal the energy scale of the entire world economy by roughly 2043.

structure may be changing beneath us.

The chart above belongs in the second category.

In 1955, a solar cell cost roughly $1,785 per watt. By 2025, the figure shown here is approximately $0.13 per watt.

That represents a price decline of roughly 99.993%.

More important than the absolute decline is its shape.

On a logarithmic scale, solar-cell prices have followed a long-term exponential decline remarkably closely. The trendline on this chart implies approximately 12% annual price deflation, equivalent to prices roughly halving every five years.

That does not mean the trend can simply be extrapolated indefinitely. Nor does it mean solar solves every energy problem.

But viewed through the Economic LongWave, it may be telling us something much more important:

One of civilization’s most important inputs—energy—is undergoing technological deflation.

And it is happening at precisely the time when several other exponential technologies are beginning to converge.

That combination deserves our attention.

The Hook: Four Hours of Sunlight

Start with a thought experiment.

The Earth intercepts roughly 174,000 terawatts of solar power continuously.

Integrated over a day, that is roughly 4.2 million terawatt-hours of incoming solar energy at the top of the atmosphere.

Now imagine a future world of 9 billion people, not living at today’s global average standard of living, but consuming energy at approximately today’s high American level.

That civilization might require roughly 2,500 exajoules of primary energy annually, depending on precisely how we define and measure energy consumption.

Yet the Sun delivers an equivalent quantity of raw energy to Earth in only roughly four hours.

Think about what that means.

The physical energy required for billions of people to become substantially wealthier exists in extraordinary abundance.

The problem is accessing it.

For most of human history, that distinction hardly mattered.

Today it increasingly does.

The Signal: A 70-Year Collapse in the Cost of Solar

of four major U.S. stock-market valuation measures, the market ended July 2026 at roughly 176% above its long-term geometric mean.

That is not merely expensive.

It is historically extreme.

The composite includes:

Crestmont P/E

Cyclically Adjusted P/E

Q Ratio

S&P Composite relative to its long-term regression trend

Individually, each measure has limitations. Taken together, however, they tell a powerful story.

The U.S. stock market is trading at valuation levels that exceed those seen around several of the most famous speculative peaks in modern financial history.

The late 1920s.

The late 1960s.

The technology bubble of 2000.

The post-pandemic speculative surge.

And yet this presents one of the hardest problems in professional money management:

Extreme valuations tell you risk is high. It does not tell you when the market will fall.

That distinction separates intelligent risk management from simply predicting crashes.

I learned that lesson personally.

I recognized the stock market was extremely overvalued by the late 1990s. But identifying valuation risk and identifying the exact market top are two entirely different disciplines.

The bubble continued.

Momentum remained strong.

Liquidity remained plentiful.

Investors became increasingly convinced that the old valuation rules no longer mattered.

Eventually they mattered enormously.

That experience produced one of the central principles behind the Economic Seasons Model:

Valuations measure risk, not timing.

So how should a money manager operate when valuations reach levels like those we see today?

The answer is not simply “sell everything.”

Instead, gradually change the portfolio's objective.

When valuations are reasonable, the primary objective may be maximizing return.

When valuations become historically extreme, the objective increasingly becomes:

preserving capital, maintaining liquidity, controlling leverage, and preparing for the opportunities that eventually emerge from dislocation.

This is how I would think about it.

extraordinary lesson for anyone trying to understand today’s global real-estate market.

Chicago ultimately became one of the great economic success stories in American history.

The city became a transportation centre, industrial powerhouse, financial centre and gateway between America’s agricultural interior and the Great Lakes.

The optimists were right about Chicago’s future.

Yet investors who bought land near the peak of the boom could still suffer devastating losses.

That apparent contradiction is the lesson.

The Chicago Canada faces its own version of the problem, but with an additional weakness: too much capital has flowed into housing and financial assets and too little into productivity-enhancing investment.

The question is no longer simply whether debt is high.

The more important question is:

Can the productive economy underneath all of these financial promises continue to support them?

That is where Wellum’s argument becomes highly relevant to the LongWave.

It is to identify the larger forces shaping the cycle, separate short-term noise from long-term structural change, and help clients understand where risk is building and where the next opportunities may emerge.

Each edition combines historical precedent, current data, and forward-looking analysis to explore the transition from Economic Winter ❄️ through Schumpeter’s Creative Destruction 🔥 and ultimately toward the foundations of the next Economic Spring 🌱.

Canada is unlikely to reproduce any historical episode exactly. They form around the most important ideas, because those are the ideas people can most easily extrapolate into infinity.

That is the key.

The greatest bubbles are not built on nothing.

They are built on truth carried too far.

And that is exactly how LongWave Autumn ends.

The LongWave Context: Autumn Always Mistakes the Future for an Asset Class

In Kondratieff’s LongWave framework, the final stage, Autumn, is the age of financialization.

Autumn is not the beginning of prosperity.

It is the capitalization of past prosperity.

It is when societies stop building wealth primarily through production and begin manufacturing the appearance of wealth through:

Falling interest rates

Rising asset values

Expanding credit

Financial engineering

Speculative narratives

Concentrated market leadership

Leverage disguised as confidence

This is why late Autumn always feels brilliant at the top.

The towers are the highest.
The markets are richest.
The billionaires are most visible.
The promises are largest.
The technology appears miraculous.

But beneath the surface, the system is becoming fragile.

Autumn says:

“The future is so bright that any price is justified.”

Winter answers:

“No. Price still matters.” ❄️

That is Grantham’s argument in one sentence.

Grantham’s Core Insight: The Technology Can Win While Investors Lose

The most important idea in the transcript is this:

AI can change the world, and AI investors can still lose a fortune.

That sounds contradictory to most people, who confuse technological success with investment success.

They are not the same thing.

Railroads changed the world.
Railroad investors were often destroyed.

The internet changed the world.
Dot-com investors were often destroyed.

Amazon inherited the retail world, but its stock fell roughly 90% from its 2000 peak before becoming one of the great companies of the modern era. Grantham uses Amazon as the perfect example: the idea was right, but the price was wrong.

That is the essence of Schumpeter’s creative destruction. 🔥➡️🌱

The innovation survives.

The capital structure does not.

The productive technology moves into the next economic spring.

The speculative investors who overpaid in Autumn get wiped out before the renewal arrives.

This is why the phrase “AI is real” does not settle the market question.

Of course, AI is real.

The real question is:

How much of the next 20 years of productivity has already been pulled forward into today’s stock prices?

That is where Grantham becomes dangerous to the consensus.

Bubbles Are Not Usually Built on Lies. last three months, annualized (−3.0%). The red is the gap.

Two more segments tell a sharper story. Full breakdown in the paid edition. 👇

The Last Cove Is Draining

For three years, the tide first went out at the crowded beaches. Toronto’s water pulled back in 2022 when rates hit. Vancouver followed. The condo flats emptied. But one cove stayed full the whole time — Quebec, fed by a scarcity of listings so severe that prices kept climbing while the rest of the country argued about a correction.

This month, for the first time, the water in that last cove started to recede again.

Here’s what the data actually shows — in plain terms:

1. The headline still looks strong. Quebec home prices are at record highs. Year-over-year growth remains positive across all detached segments — between roughly +3.5% and +7%. If you only read the annual number, nothing is wrong.

2. The forward-looking number disagrees. When you measure the most recent three months and annualize them — a faster, twitchier gauge that tends to move before the annual figure does — two of three detached segments have gone negative. One-storey: −1.1%. Composite: −3.0%. The gap between the two readings is the widest it’s been since the 2022 rate shock.

3. Two-storey homes are the holdout-within-the-holdout. Their forward read is still positive (+3.2%), but even there, the gap is closing. The strength is narrowing to one corner of the market.

4. This isn’t weakness “spreading” — it’s the last leader fading. The early-hit markets, Toronto and Ontario, are now recovering. Quebec is the opposite story: a market that never corrected, finally losing its forward momentum at the top.

5. The real cause sits underneath all of it. Quebec’s own real estate association has been blunt: households are hitting the ceiling of how much they can borrow. When the buyer simply can’t qualify for more, even a market with no listings runs out of road.

Now the lens. There’s an old framework — the long economic wave, mapped in seasons across decades — that treats moments like this not as isolated news but as a transition. In that map, we’ve spent years in the “Fall” of a credit cycle that began around 1980: the late, top-heavy, debt-financed stretch where prices detach from incomes. The framework’s whole claim is that the last strong market turning is exactly what the handoff from Fall toward Winter looks like — not a crash, but the moment the forward indicators quietly cross under while the headline still glows.

I want to be careful here: Winter is not confirmed. The honest test is simple — if Quebec’s three-month line turns positive again next quarter, that was noise, and we’ve seen it head-fake before. The framework earns its keep only if the forward number stays under and the annual number eventually catches up to it.

THE VERDICT

Signal: Quebec’s leading indicator has gone negative in 2 of 3 detached segments while prices sit at record highs.
Read: The last strong market is decelerating, not collapsing. “Resilient” is true on the rear-view data and expiring on the forward data.
Watch: Does the 3-month line stay negative into Q3? If yes, YoY catches down. If no, head-fake.
Status: Fall→Winter transition — unconfirmed.

The paid breakdown goes under the hood: the full segment charts, the method behind the 3-month annualized gauge, a scenario table for how the next two quarters resolve, and the transmission sequence — how a momentum break in one province’s detached homes actually feeds the national number. If you want the version you can act on, it’s there.

problems rarely begin with a headline. They usually begin quietly, beneath the surface, in the parts of the system most exposed to leverage, refinancing risk, and deteriorating collateral values.

That is why I am launching a new subscriber service: the Weekly Credit-Stress Radar.

Each week, I will track key banking and credit indicators to gauge whether the financial system is stabilizing, weakening, or moving closer to a more serious credit event. The focus will begin with the U.S. and Canadian banking systems, because these are two of the most important transmission channels between interest rates, real estate, household debt, business lending, and the broader economy.

The radar will monitor areas such as U.S. regional banks, Canadian bank performance, relative strength versus the broader market, bond-yield pressure, commercial real estate stress, mortgage-renewal risk, and household-credit conditions.

The purpose is not to predict every market move. The purpose is to identify early warning signals before they become obvious.

In the LongWave framework, banking stress is especially important because credit is the bridge between Economic Autumn and Economic Winter. During the late stages of a debt cycle, markets can still appear strong while the underlying credit structure begins to weaken. That is often when the most important signals appear.

For free readers, I will provide the broad conclusion and overall alert level.

For paid subscribers, the full weekly radar will include the detailed breakdown, charts, relative-performance signals, risk interpretation, and the full LongWave credit-cycle reading.

This is designed to be a practical tool: simple enough to follow, but serious enough to matter.

Weekly Credit-Stress Radar

The banking system continues to absorb higher-for-longer interest rates reasonably well. Equity investors remain constructive toward both U.S. regional banks and Canadian banks, but long-term bond yields and refinancing pressure remain the principal fault lines. No systemic banking stress is visible, yet several credit-cycle indicators remain elevated.
