I take forever to put these together, because I actually try things before speaking about them. Sometimes for months. On my IG stories, “calling my name” means I want it. Here, it means I wanted it, I got it, I wore it, I love it. It is the only way I know how to recommend anything. So no, you will not hear from me often here. When you do, it is because something passed the test.

The work bag that finally settled it.

I have been wearing this Strathberry tote bag for a bit now. I love it so much it earned a spot on my top work bags of 2026 video, linked here if you want the longer version. The leather is on the stiffer side, so the bag won’t slouch, which is just my personal preference for work bags. My favorite part is that it has a zipper (I feel safer on the subway if I'm carrying a bag that stays shut) and that little music bar of hardware, the only clue of what the bag is. If you know, you know. Very much how I dress, so if your closet looks like mine, I’m sure you get it.

The one I keep circling but have not bought is this Cuyana, the softer leather version of a similar idea. A friend has it in two colors. Two! With all the compartments (each starting at $138) and the laptop sleeve ($118) added on. The only thing stopping me is that the sleeve is not built in, so without the add ons it is basically my Strathberry, just softer (and much more accessible). It starts at half the price, though once you build it out you land around the same number. If compartments and picking your own setup is your thing, this one is worth considering.

The kitten heel that filled the gap.

Some context first. Over the last three years I have been reselling and donating my way through my shoe closet, including a lot of designer pieces. Nothing dramatic happened, I promise! I just stopped reaching for anything flashy or logo heavy, and I would rather put that money into premium quality I will actually wear. Once the dust settled, I found a hole: no neutral color kitten heels!

These were gifted to me a few months ago, from yet another Italian brand, and I have been wearing them ever since. That was intentional. At my tax bracket, a price like this needs time to justify itself, and a few months of regular wear later, it has. What can I say? Italians know all three: luxury, quality and leather. Soft calfskin, a walkable and comfortable 5cm, true to size, with a nice ring and a gold heel. A pair I will keep for years.

No makeup makeup.

If you are like me and not big on daily makeup but want to cover a small ‘imperfection’ here and there, this tinted moisturizer is the best I have tried so far. It was gifted, I accepted reluctantly, and I’m happy I did. I have now tried their Super Hydrator (Face), Super Body Hydrator, and the tinted moisturizer. I’m dry dry, and this has been a happy surprise for me. The face hydrator I will probably repurchase once my bottle runs out. As for the tinted moisturizer, I’m a shade 06 for reference. Blends like a second skin. Hydrating, dewy, sheer, exactly what I wanted. Try it and tell me I am wrong.

Summer is not over.

The Cruise & the basket bag.

I wore this right before boarding a cruise with my mom, which was quite the experience. For those of us who work hard and cannot exactly disappear for weeks at a time, a cruise does the trick. Beachy destinations, family, friends, and watching strangers be happy for a week. I avoid the pools and take the beaches instead, hit the gym, and beyond that it is a week to do whatever you want or nothing at all if that is your vibe. No cooking, no planning, no anything really. And the best part? The internet is stable enough to exist and scroll but not good enough to edit videos, so my brain has no choice but to shut off completely. Forced rest. I highly recommend it. Anyway, my basket! Hand braided in a tri color weave. I have been wearing a lot of orange and brown lately, so the colorway worked with what I already own. Full leather, from an Italian label called Vipera The Label. It comes with a braided leather strap for crossbody or shoulder. I just wear it top handle though. Not a fan of wearing bags crossbody. There is also a zippered pouch inside for anything you want hidden. In European cities, where pickpockets are basically part of the scenery (sorry not sorry), that pouch earned its keep!

The glasses search, finally over.

I am extremely picky, almost annoying about glasses. My prescription is not strong, but between hormonal acne and a medication that dries the life out of me, eyes included, contacts are, unfortunately, NOT a daily option right now. So the glasses had to be ones I actually wanted on my face. After looking and looking, I found these from Paloceras. Here’s how the look on me.

A little secret-not-so-secret: Most designer glasses are not made by the designer. A handful of manufacturers, Luxottica the biggest, make them under license for the big designer houses. And the material itself, the acetate, which is the glossy plant based plastic that quality frames are cut from, mostly comes from one place: Mazzucchelli, an Italian company that has been making it since the 1800s. So when you buy designer glasses, there is a good chance the frame material is Mazzucchelli acetate.

Guess what mine are made of? Mazzucchelli acetate.

Same material, no big logo. The luxury designer version is not giving you a better material on your face. It is giving you a logo. But I’m sure you already know that.

I got this style, in a color that works with my clothes, skin tone and undertone, in a shape that suits soft features, aka a round to oval face. If you wear glasses every day and want something not everyone has, this is it.

And that is everything I have bought, been gifted, or tried in the last few months.

Not much, I know. I do not buy nearly as much as a lot of people in this industry do and I politely decline a bewildering amount of gifts. I enjoy rewearing my clothes.

But knowing the science of textiles is only half the battle. What I want to discuss here is the nuance that doesn’t fit into a short reel: the reality of how the fashion industry operates right now, and why trying to buy the “right” clothes can feel so incredibly frustrating when you are balancing a real budget.

We are living in a market where brands successfully and unfortunately, charge premium prices for petroleum-based fabrics—aka synthetic fibers—while natural materials are being pushed into a luxury pricing tier.

It is easy to feel like you’re losing either way: you either compromise on how your skin feels, or you overextend your wallet. If you have ever looked at a fabric tag, realized a basic summer piece was entirely polyester, and felt exhausted by the lack of quality options for a reasonable price, you aren’t crazy.

The conversation around natural versus synthetic fibers quickly becomes reductive if we don’t address this reality. Yesterday, a viewer sent me a message that perfectly captured this exact dilemma:

She is right.

Thanks to the dominance of fast fashion mass production, natural fibers have been priced as a luxury tier. It is genuinely difficult for the average person to afford 100% cotton right now, let alone quality linen or silk.

I recently moved to a place with extreme heat. From a purely functional standpoint, my skin needs linen and cotton to cope with the climate. But this shouldn’t be a purist war where people are shamed for what fits their budget.

It is entirely about context. It’s about what makes sense for your climate, your budget, and the specific purpose of the garment.

Where to Draw the Line (and When Synthetics Make Sense)

Some of the most intentional, high-design clothing on the market is made from synthetic fiber. Not to cut corners, but because the design requires it.

Take the Alaïa stretch knit Azzedine bodycon dress— the one the house has been making in various forms since the 1980s. The stretch is doing structural work to sculpt and follow the body’s architecture. You cannot replicate that garment in 100% linen. It wouldn't work.

Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please is an even cleaner example. I would happily wear a polyester Pleats Please piece for a day or two for an event because the design is excellent. The pleats are permanent because of thermoplasticity—synthetic fibers can be permanently molded by heat and pressure. Natural fibers cannot. Miyake tried to create those permanent pleats with natural fibers first; they fell out. In that case, polyester wasn't a cheap compromise. It was the technical solution.

The real question we should be asking is simple:

Why is this garment synthetic?

Does the fabric choice serve a structural design purpose, or did the brand just choose it to lower their production costs?

The Blueprint: How to evaluate what you’re buying

If you want to build a functional wardrobe without falling into the trap of overpaying for cheap plastics, you need a framework. Here is how to evaluate a piece before you tap your card:

1. The 12-Hour Rule: If you are buying a garment to wear for 12 hours straight in high heat, prioritize the fiber over the design. If it’s a 2-hour dinner event where aesthetics matter more than temperature regulation, the synthetic composition is less relevant. (And that’s exactly where I’d wear my Issey Miyake pieces.)

2. The Structural Test: Look at the garment. Is it pleated? Is it heavily sculpted? Does it require intense compression? If yes, the synthetic fiber is doing technical work. If it’s just a basic button-down shirt or a simple summer dress made of 100% polyester, the brand chose that material to save money, not to serve the design.

On that note, cotton is going to come up a lot in here, so let us be on the same page. Fabric weight determines how a piece moves and how it falls on the body. Heavier cotton drapes. Lighter cotton floats. Same fiber, completely different result and that distinction is what this whole piece is really about.

But you probably already knew that, because here you are.

A few weeks ago I asked my audience what brands they shop when natural fibers matter to them. Some of those came up here. But let's start with what I actually wear.

my favorite, Leset

This tee is the clearest argument I know for why the same fiber in the right hands produces something completely different from a forgettable version of itself. Two-pack, 100% cotton, and the length sits exactly where it should — that is a design decision, not luck, and Vogue noticed it too. This top is the other piece I keep circling back to: square neckline, adjustable drawstring at the waist that gives you a silhouette without structure, in what Leset calls their “bed sheet feel” cotton. An absurd description. Also completely accurate.

This tee. 100% organic Peruvian cotton, made in Peru. Peruvian Pima has a longer fiber length than standard cotton.

Longer fibers = a softer hand, better drape, and fabric that does not start to deteriorate on you after a season.

Most people would look at this and think: it’s just a tee. You are not most people. The center back seam detail changes how it sits through the shoulders. Crew neck, slightly relaxed, lightweight. All of it starts with the Pima cotton. That is what makes this tee, THE tee.

Pip Durell looked at the women’s shirt market, decided it had been getting it wrong, and set about correcting it. (Thank goodness. Someone had to.)

100% organic cotton, poplin, designed in London, made in Portugal. This shirt made it to my white shirt edit. It has rivershell buttons. Not plastic. Shell. The difference is one of those things that is almost impossible to articulate until you have held both versions and then you cannot unknow it.

Two pleats across the yoke, double buttoned cuff, dropped shoulder. All of these things matter because of how the piece fits on you. And you can have your initials put on it — the personalization is what sold me! That and the shell buttons, which is a detail that sounds small and is not small at all…

Ah, and let me remind you — our girl Pip is a former Vogue and Tatler editor. She can do no wrong.

I made a full video on this brand because the knitwear deserved more than a passing mention. What I want to add here is the fiber combination on this crewneck — cotton, linen, and silk in one piece (literally the perfect combo). That trio at this price point is unusual. And then this other crewneck— 100% fine-gauge cotton, a high rib at the waist that creates a soft blouson. I would throw it over my shoulders on a windy afternoon and still be wearing it that evening. The rib at the waist is what creates the shape. Without it, it’s a crew. With it, it’s an outfit. That detail did not happen by accident — someone decided to put it there, and knowing why is exactly what changes how you shop.

This cashmere polo is 60% cashmere, 40% linen, and the linen is doing what linen does best — giving structure and breathability to a fiber that, in crazy hot months, can go a little formless on its own. The pointelle adds texture, not pattern. And texture, in this case, is the outfit.

If cashmere is something you care about, this brand is worth keeping close. A piece from here is one you will still be wearing years from now, and that is the whole point.

I have had my eye on this brand for a while and their clothing is where they shine! I own a few pieces and the designs are something I keep coming back to, particularly blouses and dresses. There are things I would buy again without hesitation. They recently restocked their New Balance collab too, and the sneaker colorway is gorgeous. This blouse and the sneakers are both on my wishlist right now. Not everything, not at every price point, but certain things, absolutely.

Sunscreen. Yes, really.

I made a short video about this one recently purely because it looked beautiful on camera and because I absolutely love the product, which are reasons enough. I have been using the regular version sunscreen for a while now. I wore it traveling through the abrasive sun in the desert of Ica, in Peru. I wore it in the Amazon jungle, on the coasts of Lima, in the humidity of Medellín and the heat of Cartagena. Then in the dryness of Toronto. So yeah, after all of that, I think I can recommend it.

A few months ago I added this one to my routine. I am a little traumatized when it comes to my skin, hormonal acne, medication, the whole thing, so I do not try new things casually. This one I trust. It primes if you want to wear makeup, and if you do not (hi, me) it gives you this immediate glow that is not glittery, just healthy looking. They also make a spray version you can layer over makeup throughout the day, which makes complete sense for anyone spending time outside with a full face on.

The face cream that actually made sense.

I am not a skincare expert and what follows is not advice, it is just my experience. About a year ago I found out I had hormonal acne, which meant everything I was doing for my skin had to change. Products that cost in the hundreds, complicated multi step routines, all of it gone. What replaced it is so so simple. If you want to see exactly what I use now, it is all listed here, and yes, most of it is drugstore.

I have mandatory monthly consultations with my dermatologist and whenever something new gets recommended to me by anyone, I pull up the ingredient list and compare it to what I already use. Is it an upgrade? Does it make sense for my skin? That is the filter everything goes through. I am also on a medication that dries you out like you would not believe, everywhere, not just your face, so when I say this cream makes my skin feel genuinely moisturized, it is doing real work. Just look. No make up, just face cream.

It was gifted to me and if it had not been I probably would have never tried it. But it passed every check and it is a step up from my current cream in terms of how my skin feels. I use it at night, and during the day only when it is particularly dry wherever I am. It does its job well. That is all I ask.

The laptop case that gets the job done.

I wanted something durable, protective and with that sophisticated intrecciato woven look, considered without trying too hard. This one checks everything. It’s pretty affordable, it protects my most important work tool, and it looks good doing it. Sometimes that is enough.

I’m obsessed with this new gadget. It is cute, it looks good in the bathroom, and it actually earns that confidence.

A pressure sensor that stops vibrating the moment you are pushing too hard, which matters more than people think because most of us have no idea we are doing it. It comes with a cute travel case that has a UV light built in to sanitize your brush on the go, no cables needed, and the battery lasts over a month on a single charge.

It is a lot of thought for something you use for two minutes twice a day. I appreciate that.

I think I found the perfect flip flop.

It is not about how it looks first, it is about the footbed, the break in time, and whether the thong strap is going to punish you all summer. These passed every test. So soft, basically no break in period, and the square toe makes them look a little more intentional than your average Havaiana. They also come in a platform version which I am seriously considering in red. I am 5’1. A little height never hurt anyone.

And that is kind of it. A small list of things that have been on my mind or on my body lately. I do not buy a lot anymore, and when I do, something has to genuinely earn its place before I talk about it.

I only know how to speak from experience, so whether something was purchased or gifted, my starting point is always the same: have I actually used it, do I actually like it, and does it make sense for me to recommend it to you. The observations of a 30-something millennial who has accumulated too much information and too many opinions, and has therefore decided that Substack is the appropriate place to deposit them. You are welcome.

I started noticing them Ossington. Then at that coffee shop in the corner of Portland and Adelaide. Then outside Neo’s on Spadina, hanging off the shoulder of someone who looked like they had given the rest of their outfit a significant amount of thought. White canvas, navy trim, a red embroidered logo that looks, and I say this with affection, like it was designed by a circus mouse.

Where there is no Trader Joe’s.

I took a photo the first time, because I was confused. I took a second photo a week later, for the same reason. By the third, I had started to understand that my confusion was the point, and that the bag was doing exactly what it was designed to do, which is to say, exactly what it was never designed to do at all.

The bag costs $2.99. Specifically the mini tote, the one generating all the hysteria. The classic full-size canvas version you see people carrying on the street is a different product, though both live comfortably under $4. Neither ships. Trader Joe’s has no online store, no Canadian locations, and no intention of making any of this easier to obtain.

The only way to own one in Toronto is to have traveled to a city where Trader Joe’s operates, or to know someone who did, or to have paid a reseller on ebay a sum of money that is, depending on the colorway, somewhere between mildly absurd and genuinely unhinged.

One eBay seller listed a single 2025 mint green mini tote at $49,999. I am aware that listing price and sale price are different things. I am choosing to include this detail anyway because I think it captures something important about what is happening here, and also because I want you to sit with that number for a moment. I’ll hold your hand.

Forty-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars. For a canvas bag. That cost $2.99.

I ran a poll on my Stories. Twenty-eight percent of my audience owns one. Seventy-two percent do not. The responses I got back from the twenty-eight percent were revealing in the way that honest, unguarded answers tend to be. One person told me she owns one for purely functional reasons: outside pockets on both sides, keys on one, phone on the other, accessible without digging.

This is an entirely reasonable position and I respect it completely. Another told me she was in Japan and saw local Japanese people wearing them, not tourists, she specified, local Japanese people.

And then there were the people who sent me the message I had been expecting, which was some version of:

This is the honest answer. And it is also, if you look at it carefully, a fairly precise description of how every status object enters circulation.

Someone replied to my Stories with a thought that was almost right.

She said:

I understand the instinct. But the conclusion misses something important.

The Trader Joe’s tote is not trying to approximate what the Hermès bag does. It is operating in a completely different value system, one where the Hermès bag is not the aspiration but something closer to the opposite reference point.

Which is, of course, still playing a game. Just a different one, with different entrance requirements and better plausible deniability.

The mechanism is identical. A low-cost object that carries a signal about who you are, where you have been, and what kind of person you understand yourself to be. The direction of the signal is inverted. The function is the same.

What makes the TJ’s tote specifically interesting is that it requires cultural fluency to read. You cannot buy your way into understanding why this particular bag is the one that matters. The price is not the barrier. The knowledge is. In cities without Trader Joe's, the bag adds a second layer: geographic mobility. It says you have been somewhere specific, or that you know someone who has.

A London-based writer named Holly Davies investigated this for her Substack newsletter Articles of Interest and found that nearly everyone she interviewed abroad assumed the person carrying one was liberal and culturally aware. The tote is American soft power wearing canvas. The bag, in her read, represents an America far enough from the ultra-capitalist, aggressively branded version that international audiences find alienating

This is why it has landed in Japan with the particular weight it has. The TJ totes appear in carefully assembled outfits alongside vintage denim and New Balance, part of a wider interest in a specific and curated version of American culture, not McDonald’s America, not Times Square America, but the America that has a Trader Joe’s on the corner and knows what to do with a Meyer lemon.

There is a detail from the response I received that I keep returning to.

She said:

This is the inevitable arc of every object that crosses from subcultural signal into mainstream recognition. The moment enough people are carrying it, the signal degrades. The in-group marker becomes the out-group marker. The knowing smirk becomes the thing being smirked at.

I did the same thing with the Adidas Samba. I bought them years ago before the wave, watched them appear on every second person, and eventually sold the whole lot on Facebook Marketplace. Not because the shoe changed. Because what it said had.

The TJ pastel mini totes of early 2026 sold out again. There were people lining up before stores opened, each limited to one bag per color. This is not the behavior of a subculture maintaining its codes. This is mass adoption, which means the signal is already compromised, which means the people who understood what it meant earliest are already looking for the next thing.

This is how it always works. The object is never really about the object.

Lastly, if you own a TJ’s tote and you carry it because it has good pockets and you like the way it looks, that is a complete and sufficient reason to own a bag. Objects do not require justification. I am not suggesting that every person carrying one has constructed a careful semiotic argument for their own cultural positioning. Most have not, and the ones who have are probably exhausting to be around at dinner.

What I am suggesting is that the reason this tote traveled from a parking lot in Pasadena to the streets of Toronto and Tokyo and Seoul without a single dollar spent on advertising is not an accident of aesthetics. It is a very specific set of cultural codes doing exactly the work that cultural codes do, on a $2.99 piece of canvas, without anyone at Trader Joe’s intending for any of it to happen.

The most powerful status objects are always the ones that never set out to be symbols at all.

They just end up that way.

Today I was doing some personal shopping for a client. Still wearing the jacket. I walked into the department store and reached out to touch a bomber hanging on the rack at $2,000. And then I looked down at what I was wearing.

The leather was the same.

Not similar. Not adjacent. The same hand feel, the same weight, the same grain behavior under my fingers. A two-button stand collar where mine has none, elasticated cuffs where mine falls differently, a distinct silhouette. But the leather? Identical. I recorded a video. Of course I did.

What the Hands Already Know

You learn leather through handbags the way you learn a language through immersion: fast, specific, and with a considerable amount of correction when you get it wrong.

I know leather. Not in the way an artisan knows it, but in the way someone who spent years in luxury retail knows it: through daily repetition, through handling, through the particular kind of training you receive when the product you’re selling starts at four figures and the client in front of you has done her research. I started in handbags. By the time I moved into ready-to-wear, I had developed opinions about grain and hand feel that nobody had asked me to develop.

I developed them anyway.

The $2,000 jacket is not only selling you leather.

It is selling you something considerably more elaborate. It is selling you the ritual.

Picture it. You walk in. Someone offers you water, or coffee, or tea, or depending on the hour and who you are, a glass of something considerably better. If it is a private appointment, there are sweets on the table.

The bag is brought out and placed into a pillow made of paper, shaped precisely to cradle it. The hardware gets its own cotton pouch, branded. If it is a top-handle bag, with history, the handles are tied upward with ribbon, because even the handles have a correct way to be presented. Then more ribbon. Then the branded paper bag. Then, a month later, a handwritten thank you card arrives at your home, along with an invitation to come back and visit. They walk you to the door when you leave. They say goodbye like they mean it.

This is not manipulation. It is craft of a different kind. The product is extraordinary and the experience surrounding it is designed to match. I know this because I was the one in the gloves. (I also made the coffee.)

What the Label Doesn't Say

The designer jacket was made in India. Mine was made in China. In the world of leather production these are not meaningfully different — both countries have a long history of manufacturing quality goods, and the hand feel I was comparing this afternoon confirmed exactly that.

What the brand does not disclose, on their own site, is where the jacket was made at all. I found out because I was holding the garment and checked, then confirmed it through a third party retailer who was willing to say what the brand's own pages would not. Which, for a jacket retailing at $2,000 from a contemporary label with no heritage to speak of, I find genuinely funny. Not outraged. Funny. Because $2,000 implies something. It implies Europe. It implies a lineage of craft and an atelier where someone who really knows what they are doing made considered decisions about construction. And maybe that is true. But we have all read the news.

We know what “Made in Europe" can mean in practice: the finished percentage, the zipper placed in Milan on a garment assembled almost entirely elsewhere, the investigations into who was actually doing the work and under what conditions.

The willingness not to look too closely is, at this point, a choice.

Or Perhaps My Truth

The question is not whether luxury is worth it. Luxury at its most rigorous ABSOLUTELY is. The question is whether what you are holding is that, or whether it is the performance of it, dressed in a number that has learned to speak the right language. The ribbon, the thank you card, the goodbye at the door — they are selling you the feeling that the decision has already been made for you. That the work of knowing is someone else’s job. That you can trust the price tag the way you would trust a person. But… I’m sure you already know that.

At 32, after enough years inside this world to have been sold the dream and to have sold it myself, I removed the blindfold. And I saw the truth.

Or perhaps my truth. We are all somewhere different on this road.

People write to me about fashion, about styling, about that piece they found on The RealReal and whether it is worth the condition grade. Sometimes they write to tell me about a runway moment that moved them, or a fabric they cannot identify from a photograph, or a coat that has been living rent-free in their mind for three seasons. And sometimes, more often than I would expect, they write to ask me whether the Louis Vuitton Speedy is a good choice as a first designer bag.

I have never had the courage to answer that question. Until now. Let’s see how this lands. I wrote this listening to Carmen. Make of that what you will.

What the Speedy Actually Is

The Speedy was designed in 1930 as luggage. Compact, structured, built to be thrown into the overhead compartment of a train without ceremony. Louis Vuitton made it for Audrey Hepburn, or so the story goes, which is itself a telling detail, because the bag has been borrowing someone else’s biography for nearly a century. What it was not designed to be is a statement. And yet here we are.

I want to be precise about what I mean, because imprecision on this subject tends to produce the wrong argument. I am not talking about the leather Speedy, which is a different object with a different logic and a different customer. I am not talking about the Murakami collaboration pieces, which I genuinely love and which function more as collectibles than as handbags and should be evaluated accordingly. I am talking specifically about the coated canvas monogram Speedy Bandoulière, currently retailing at $1,940, and what it communicates in 2026 to anyone paying attention.

Which is: everything. All at once. To everyone in the room.

The Business Logic Nobody Talks About

I worked in luxury retail long enough to understand the internal architecture of these houses from the inside, and one of the details that has stayed with me is this: Louis Vuitton sales associates do not love selling canvas pieces. The commission structure reflects the price point, and the price point on canvas reflects something other than material cost. This is not a criticism of the associates. Having been one myself, I understand entirely where they are coming from.

It is an observation about what the pricing on a coated canvas bag actually represents. You are not paying for the textile lining, which is what you get. You are not paying for the microfiber lining, which is what the leather version gets. I bet you did not even look at that. You are paying for the letters. The interlocking arrangement of four of them, repeated across a surface that will not patina, will not develop character, and that, according to a well-documented and growing body of collector and consumer evidence, is not the same material it once was. Vintage Louis Vuitton canvas was thicker, more flexible, and structurally more resilient. The modern version is thinner, sometimes stiffer, and more prone to cracking along high-flex zones like corners and zipper arcs. Louis Vuitton does not repair cracked canvas. They will replace it within a limited window or issue store credit, but the material itself, once cracked, is not recoverable through their boutiques. That detail does not appear anywhere near the $1,940 price tag.

This is what I mean when I say the canvas Speedy is a purchase made for association rather than for quality, and if you are buying it expecting the latter, you are shopping against the object’s own logic. It is the same reasoning that leads someone to buy a designer house’s fashion jewelry entry line rather than something made by a jeweler who has spent forty years thinking about nothing but metalwork.

What makes this particularly interesting in 2026 is the degree to which Louis Vuitton has allowed the canvas to become the public face of the entire house. I cannot tell you the last time I saw another bag from their current collection worn by a real person outside of a campaign image. What remains visible, universally and continuously, is the canvas. And when the most visible piece a house produces is also its entry-level piece, the house has made a statement about its own priorities that no amount of runway positioning can entirely undo.

Two Customers, One Bag

There is a customer for whom none of this creates any tension whatsoever. She is nineteen, her family has a certain kind of money, and the Speedy is what she throws in the back of a car on the way to school because it is capacious and she is not particularly concerned about it. The bag functions for her exactly as it was designed: as luggage, held loosely, without ceremony. I have no argument with her. She is using the object correctly.

The tension arises elsewhere. It arises when the same object, with the same canvas and the same textile lining and the same four letters, becomes a years-long financial ambition for someone who has been told, by very sophisticated marketing, that owning it means something. That reaching it means arriving somewhere. LVMH is extraordinarily good at this particular construction, the architecture of attainable aspiration, and I say that with genuine respect for the craft of it because it is genuinely masterful.

What the House Is Actually Capable Of

If we are discussing what Louis Vuitton can produce when it is working at the level it should be working at, I would point you toward the Capucines.

The Capucines was introduced in 2013 and named for the Boulevard des Capucines, where Louis Vuitton opened his original workshop in 1854. It is made from taurillon leather, proprietary to the house and cut from a single hide rather than split, which is what allows it to develop the depth of patina that makes a bag look more considered at five years than it did at purchase. Its signature is a leather-wrapped LV clasp on the flap, a detail so restrained it can be turned inward entirely if you prefer. The bag does not need you to see it. The construction announces itself through the quality of the leather surface, and when you see one in a room you register it without necessarily being able to name it, which is precisely the point. It does not announce itself. It is simply there, and you have seen it, and the impression it leaves is not of a logo but of a material. Quietly and completely luxurious.

That difference, between a bag that performs its value and a bag that simply holds it, is not a difference of price tier dressed up as a taste distinction. It is a difference in design intent. One object was built to be recognized immediately, universally, by as many people as possible.The other was built to be understood.

Recognition is fast and universal and fades as quickly as trends do. Understanding takes longer and belongs to fewer people and does not require the same level of external confirmation.

What I Actually Learned Working in This Industry

I spent years inside luxury retail surrounded by beautiful things, wanting many of them, and slowly learning to separate what I actually responded to from what I had been educated to want. That is not a quick process and I would not pretend otherwise.There is nothing shameful in finding a bag desirable because of what it represents. We are all subject to those associations at some point, and the marketing that produces them is genuinely sophisticated. What I eventually became more interested in was the question underneath: do I want this object, or do I want what this object is supposed to signal? Because those are purchases made from very different places, and only one of them tends to produce something you are still glad to own a decade later.

Taste, in the end, is not something you perform for a room. It is something you develop in private, through accumulation, through getting things wrong, through learning what you actually respond to versus what you were told to want. It does not require an audience to validate it. The canvas Speedy was not built for that kind of patience. It was built for immediate legibility, for the fast and universal transmission of a recognizable signal, and at that particular function it succeeds completely.

I just happen to find that function, at this price point, in this cultural moment, quite frankly exhausting to look at.

That is a personal opinion. But it is an informed one.

Many of them were US sizes six, eight, ten, and very often, there were simply no clothes for them.

Not sold out. Not delayed. Just not made in their size.

This was not because the store did not want their business. It was because the store reflected a very specific client reality.

In that location, the majority of the clients were Asian. Smaller frames were the norm, so smaller sizes sold more often, and as a result, that is what the store received season after season.

The buyer for the brand was not local. She was based in a different country, still within our region, but removed from the day to day reality of our store. Her decisions were driven by numbers. What sold. What moved. What looked efficient on paper, even if it felt super disconnected from our store reality.

From her perspective, the data made sense. From the floor, it created limits (and frankly, a lot of problems).

Clients who did not fall into that size range were told they could preorder. But, if the piece arrived and it did not fit, the sale was final. No returns.

This was not easy for anyone involved. For the client, it often felt like rejection. Not intentionally, but in practice. The message they received was simple: we do not have this for you, and we are not set up to get it for you in a way that protects you.

That was likely not what the brand intended. But it was the effect created by buyer decisions that played out on the floor.

For us, as stylists and sales associates, it was frustrating. Our role was to sell ready to wear. When a client wanted to buy and we could not offer her the piece in her size, the sale simply died. Luxury purchases are very often impulsive. You see it. You love it. You take it. When that moment passes, it rarely returns.

What this structure effectively did was shift all the risk onto the client, which I personally found egregious.

So I won’t name the brand. I don’t need to.

What matters is this: I was obsessed with it. Not casually interested — obsessed. I believed in what it represented, what it claimed to stand for, what it sold itself as. I left one of the best retail jobs I’d ever had to work there.

And within weeks, the illusion collapsed.

I worked in ready-to-wear. The kind where a tank top didn’t cost less than four figures, where fabrics were meant to be handled with care, where garments were sold on construction, cut, and material integrity — not impulse.

I expected rigor.

I expected discipline.

I expected the product to be treated as seriously as the story told about it.

and… that was my first mistake.

What broke the spell wasn’t a single event. It was the environment. The store itself. The way luxury behaved when no client was watching.

Food left near garments. Dirty plates and glasses sitting for days — sometimes weeks — inside the space. Close to racks of ready-to-wear, near handbags that were later presented to clients as sacred objects of craftsmanship and heritage.

I watched sales associates eat next to those handbags. Touch them with bare hands still slick from food. No gloves. No care. Fingers on leather that would later be placed on a pillow and described to clients as precious, delicate, almost ceremonial.

The contrast was impossible to ignore.

Everything was everywhere. No logic. No structure. No visible system that respected the materials being sold.

I remember thinking: How does inventory even happen here?

I did what I’d always done. I organized. I imposed order. I treated the product the way the brand claimed it should be treated.

That didn’t make me popular, and quite frankly, I did not care.

Because when you organize chaos, you expose it. And when you expose it, you expose the people who were comfortable operating inside it.

Recently, after I shared an Instagram story about luxury handbags and quality, a follower reached out to me.

Something had gone wrong with a designer bag she already owned.

Based on what she described, it sounded less like normal wear and more like a manufacturing issue. The brand approved the repair, but only as a paid service.

That detail stayed with me.

Not because repairs are unusual, but because of what that decision revealed.

Most luxury handbags are sold without standardized warranties, at least not in the way many people assume. Instead, brands rely on after-sales systems that are deliberately flexible.

Repairs are assessed individually. Outcomes vary. Definitions blur. A defect and wear can look identical once time has passed.

In the case this follower described, timing mattered. She brought the bag in roughly two years after purchase. According to her, it had barely been used.

Whether the issue originated in production became secondary to how it was categorized in that moment. This is where luxury becomes slippery.

Without a formal warranty, interpretation fills the gap, and interpretation is rarely neutral.

It’s shaped by time, policy, and risk tolerance. Not by how much you paid.

This doesn’t automatically mean a product is poorly made, but quality and protection are not the same thing. They’re often sold as if they are.

I’ve seen this disconnect from multiple angles.

When I worked in luxury retail, repairs were always selective. Some items were refused because they were genuinely irreparable. Others because the brand did not want to assume long-term responsibility or risk.

The difference between can’t and won’t was not always clear to the customer.

I’ve also experienced this as a client.

Last year, I brought my own bag to the Prada store on Fifth Avenue in New York.

Not for a repair, just for cleaning and conditioning. While I was shopping, the service was attentive and generous. When the conversation shifted to after-sales care for an item I already owned, I was redirected to a local cobbler.

No confrontation. No explanation. Just a boundary.

By contrast, I’ve had different experiences with houses like Ferragamo, where repairs and maintenance have often been handled with far less friction, sometimes without additional cost.

That difference isn’t accidental. It reflects how brands think about longevity, responsibility, and their relationship to the product after the sale.

This is where repair culture matters.

Some houses build their identity around craftsmanship as a system, not just as an aesthetic. When longevity and repairability are central to how a product is designed and positioned, after-sales care tends to be more consistent.

Some brands like Bottega Veneta are often cited for this reason.

That distinction rarely matters at the moment of purchase. It matters years later, when something needs attention. This is also why pre-owned can make sense, particularly with well-constructed bags.

When warranties are limited or discretionary, what you are really buying is material integrity and structural longevity.

A bag that holds up physically doesn’t lose its relevance simply because it is no longer new.

A luxury price does not guarantee long-term support. It does not guarantee how a defect will be interpreted, and it does not guarantee that the brand will absorb the cost.

Understanding this doesn’t mean rejecting luxury. It means engaging with it more clearly.

Where you shop matters.

How a brand treats you after the sale matters.

And craftsmanship, when it is real, tends to reveal itself over time.

Long before an object is worn or even touched, it is already framed through words. Language does the work first. It decides whether something is called luxury, premium, elevated, investment worthy, timeless, or aspirational before the material itself has any say.

Language turns products into status. It turns price into value. It turns repetition into legitimacy. And over time, it turns consumption into identity.

Not in an obvious or dramatic way, but quietly. When ownership becomes shorthand for who someone is, when a belt, a bag, or a logo starts standing in for taste, success, or belonging, language has already done its job.

I find myself observing this constantly, even when I am not consciously naming it as language.

When I question why everything is described as luxury, that is a language critique. When I pay attention to how brands and creators describe products on social media or on their websites, that is a language critique. When I strip things back in my videos or captions and ask what is actually being communicated versus what is being sold, that too is a language critique.

This is not abstract. It happens in very specific places.

It happens in Instagram captions that recycle the same softened adjectives until they lose meaning. It happens when ownership is narrated as transformation rather than choice. It happens when certain phrases are repeated so often that they stop being examined at all.

Focusing on language does not mean academic analysis or jargon. It means paying attention.

It means noticing how brands talk about themselves. How influencers narrate possession and desirability. How consumers repeat certain ideas without ever interrogating them. And how words, through overuse, slowly erode the value they were meant to protect.

This is why Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas resonated with me. Not only because of its economic argument, but because it shows how terminology collapses under repetition. When everything is framed as exceptional, nothing is.

I occupy a complicated position in all of this. Brands reach out to me. I write my own captions and scripts. I create fashion content. I occasionally source pieces for clients. I also have a nine to five and a life that exists entirely outside of fashion’s performance.

I am not observing this system from a distance, but I am also not fully absorbed by it. That tension is where my interest lies.

What Drives That Market Premium

   Each Birkin is handmade by a single artisan. Craft demands time—often 15–20 hours per bag. Hermès doesn’t scale that process, ever

2. Controlled Distribution

   Hermès manages who sees what in boutiques. Not everyone gets offered quota bags. Some customers spend tens of thousands across other Hermès categories simply to gain the chance to be offered one.

3. Secondary Demand

   The resale market doesn’t exist because retail pricing is “too low.” It exists because retail access is too gated. When buyers can’t secure a quota piece at retail, they turn to the market. That demand pushes prices higher.

Here’s the Truth Clients Care About

This isn’t about price alone. It’s about access equity. Hermès has created a system where scarcity isn’t accidental—it’s intentional. That’s how the brand sustains desirability and investment value. The folks who understand that don’t play a guessing game. They seek certainty. They work with specialists who see inventory before it hits broad channels.

Hermès could produce more quota bags tomorrow. They choose not to.

Buying something you wouldn’t have wanted at full price is rarely a win.

Sales can be useful if you know exactly what you’re looking for and why.

A specific category. A specific piece. A gap you’ve already identified. Not browsing. Not impulse. Not justification.

The difference between strategic buying and emotional buying is preparation.

The Real Luxury Move

Luxury isn’t about getting things cheaper. It’s about getting things right.

Knowing when to buy. Knowing when to wait. And knowing when to walk away, even if the price looks tempting.
