I was speaking (actually, ranting) to a friend this week on voicenotes about how I feel rather shouty at the moment. With the kids that is.

I know overstimulation is a thing, and when I catch myself reaching this rather over-boiled state of being, I know I should take a deep breath (as they say), and relax some tension, but this is harder than it sounds when you’re five minutes past the time you were supposed to leave, the house is a tip and you’ve wildly misjudged the number of PE kits required that week because you assumed, rather optimistically, that you’d be on top of the washing…

Instead, you’re standing by the tumble dryer waiting for it to finish its final round so you can put your child directly into a pair of warm PE shorts and get out of the door.

With that in mind - and this Substack being very much dedicated to the pursuit of effortlessness while leading a busy life - I’ve been thinking about how we can remove one decision from that particular morning chaos: getting dressed.

Whenever I ask women how they want getting dressed to feel, almost everyone eventually comes back to that same lovely word: effortless. We still want to feel current and cool and like ourselves; we just don’t want achieving it to require 25 minutes that inevitably ends up with the contents of our wardrobe splayed out on the floor.

September, to me, feels like the perfect time to tackle this morning routine. It is basically New Year for mums… new term, new routines, newly purchased water bottles, we’re feeling pleseantly optimistic and on top of things!

So, how can we make getting dressed in the morning feel more effortless, habitual and calm; while still feeling really good in what we’re wearing?

I remember someone saying this to me before when my kids were just toddlers - the old “just you wait until school, it’s a nightmare” comments came in fast and strong from those with older children, and while I was still able to enjoy weeks of endless childcare at nursery... I always wondered what they meant…

Now I know!

I think the main issue is that the kids are with each other 24/7, and the sibling tension slowly builds up until the arguing becomes consistently constant - from the TV channel to who gets the last biscuit crumb. Everything and anything, by the final week, is apparently worth fighting over… and it is noisy!

This week I’m definitely starting to feel like I can find my feet again. I found a camp for both of them that they can attend separately - a crucial detail - allowing for some much-needed time with our selves, all round.

So, with that in mind, I wanted this week’s Substack to be a chunky, juicy one all about the return to school - mum edition.

What do we wear? And how do we look effortlessly pulled together by 7.15am? I think the answer is having combinations almost glued into your head. The sort you don’t really have to think about:

Cotton trouser + fitted tank + sandal + enter something cool - wind jacket, baseball cap, jumper around the shoulders, shirt tied around the waist.

Barrel denim + white top + ballet flat + enter something cool - suede jacket, baseball cap, jumper around the shoulders, shirt tied around the waist.

And so on and so forth.

What I’ve realised time and time again with wardrobes is that when the basics - the foundations —-are spot on, then you can have fun with the suede jackets, the cooler shoes, the current accessories etc. So what I want us all to have is the basics done, so we can actually enjoy building on them.

We know what we have, therefore we know what we’re missing - and suddenly everything becomes a little more rotational and much easier to mix and match.

For example, I think we should all have four colours of jean in our rotation: a mid-wash, an off-white/beige, a black and a deep indigo. Then, once those core foundational colours are covered, add in the more fun denim.

Same goes for tanks and tees. Get the boring bit right and the fun bit becomes considerably more fun.

So, with all of this in mind, I wanted to start with exactly that: the fun stuff.

Yes, wind jackets are a vibe and, as a mum, this particularly practical piece of clothing is very much welcomed. Now, I know a lot of us live in Dubai, where wind and rain aren’t exactly regular occurrences, but I don’t want us to miss out on this gorgeous layering opportunity.

So come December, we can absolutely do this with a denim short. Until then, use it in the malls where the AC is Baltic and we all need a quick throw-on.

After six weeks of school holidays, I’ve been running almost entirely in mum survival mode, which means quite a few things have slipped, the to-do list is fairly endless, and I suddenly have the urge to get everything finished, tidy and ready to go.

Which is why it felt quite appropriate to do a post about finishing touches this week…

Because right now, I am very into anything that is easy, requires minimal thought, but still makes me feel good during during the final two-week stint of summer-holiday parenting!

So, how do we make ourselves look put-together when mentally we’re living about two weeks behind?

Here’s how I will be using style to make me look far more organised than I feel… starting with…

This sounds almost too mundane to warrant its own point, but I swear it works! Adding an anklet and generally “dressing your feet” is something we’re seeing a lot of this summer, and it’s such an easy way to make an outfit feel that little bit more put-together.

I know we’re already midway through August, but to quote Zara Larsson, “summer isn’t over yet!” and I’m absolutely not ready to retire the denim shorts just yet…

Especially for my Dubai readers, where realistically they’re a wardrobe staple for most of the year. And London, I hear you’re somehow still sitting in 35-degree heat, so this feels very much like useful information rather than an end-of-summer afterthought.

With that in mind, I wanted to run through five pairs of jean shorts I’m recommending to clients right now - not because they are overly trend-led, but because they’re the sort of pieces I can see earning their keep for a fair few summers to come.

Denim shorts are one of those deceptively simple building blocks to making a summer wardrobe functional, so getting the cut right means you’ve solved most of your outfit formulas in one go.

For my own wardrobe, I want a pair that can hold their own with the simplest white tank and flip-flops, but feel equally as good with dressier evening top and a slightly more considered shoe. Essentially: the shorts need to do quite a bit of the leg work!

When I worked with talent back in London, I spent a ridiculous amount of my week searching for new designers. There was almost an unspoken stylist race to find the brilliant little brand nobody else knew about yet - ideally in time for a BAFTA red carpet or a BBC TV launch. I think that’s probably why I still get such a kick out of wandering into a great independent shop and finding something I haven’t seen everywhere else.

Thanks to a very generous husband and grandparents, I’ve managed to indulge this slightly on a couple of solo trips recently - one to the Cotswolds and another to Lisbon. My approximately five child-free days of the year 😂 and, alongside the obvious joy of finishing a coffee while it was still hot, it gave me some proper time to wander, browse and do something I’d forgotten how much I love.

So, in no particular order, these are the brands I found, revisited or finally tried - and, more importantly, the pieces I think are actually worth knowing about.

I stumbled across Homecore and fell in love instantly because it sits on exactly the right side of utility wear for me - practical, but with enough personality that it never feels too functional. Think great combat trousers, relaxed shapes, terry towelling and easy separates, all with slightly unexpected details that make them feel interesting. It’s the sort of clothing that works particularly well for real life: comfortable enough for a full day of running around, but considered enough that you still feel properly dressed.

The last few weeks disappeared into family catch-ups, time with my nieces and the sort of summer holiday juggle that leaves very little room for uninterrupted work, and if you’re reading this while simultaneously negotiating a snack request, I suspect you’ll understand!

We are five weeks into the summer holidays, with just three left to go (I sometimes feel September has more of a New Year Reset vibe than January!)… anyone else?

Anyway, back to the clothes we are all wearing as we navigate the summer holidays, one thing I have noticed over the past few weeks is that the busier life becomes, the less brain space I have for getting dressed. Which is exactly when having a handful of reliable outfit formulas becomes invaluable… and without really thinking about it, I’ve been reaching for the same combinations again and again over the last few weeks. Outfits that feel easy enough for the morning rush, but still make me feel like I’ve made an effort when it is mid-afternoon.

I’ve also realised I’ve become attached to a few pieces this month. Anklets have somehow become my most-worn piece of jewellery, and colour has crept back into my wardrobe in a way I wasn’t expecting. Sky blue. Lemon yellow. Perhaps it’s because of the sun-kissed skin, or just something about summer itself, but I’ve found myself instinctively drawn towards both. It has made me wonder whether we naturally crave different colours at different points in the year... I have a feeling there’s a whole newsletter in that for an article later this month.

Me and my husband have, in all our years of parenting, only managed one night and two days away together… Which feels completely ridiculous now I see it written down on paper! But we moved countries when the children were babies, and we’ve never had family nearby to call upon for this sort of thing. Geography simple hasn’t been on our side when it comes to weekend escapes, but it does make those rare occasions together now feel even more special, as we have more opportunities to embrace them.

In a few weeks we’re escaping to Lisbon for a city break, so I thought I’d share exactly what I’m thinking about packing for a weekend away without the kids. Truthfully, these outfits work just as well if you’re travelling with the kids, but there’s something rather lovely about packing with the possibility of an uninterrupted dinner in mind… A little chance to dress up, linger over a hot coffee, walk 12,000 + steps and remember just how much you love clothes when you’re dressing up for date nights!

If you’re only away for two or three nights - which, let’s be honest, is usually the length of the generous grandparent offer - you really don’t need that much. A thoughtfully packed carry-on will take you surprisingly far, especially when every piece earns its place.

Dinner outfits, however… they’re always my favourite part.

We all start every day with a choice: what do I wear today? And recently, I’ve been noticing the benefits of putting a little more effort into that decision. I know this can sound incredibly superficial, but fashion (and, in turn, clothes) is undoubtedly an important part of our lives. It affects how we carry ourselves, as well as how we are perceived… (remember that messy top bun Tesco run with a baby that provoked that run and hide kinda feeling!?)

So, if our clothing choices have been proven to actively influence how we feel and how we perform, surely we should all be utilising this tool to the max in motherhood. We don’t need a ton of clothes, or the latest thing from the latest brand, but we do benefit from styles that fit us well and speak to our personal psyche.

We all know this, but I don’t think we properly put it into practice... Take this scenario, for instance: same day, same person, same personality, same skill set… different outfit…

Scenario one: reaching for a pair of drawstring linen shorts and an old-ish T-shirt. It’s summer, we haven’t thought about anything other than not getting too hot, so this is what we’ve reached for on the way out with the kids. If this were me, I’d feel fine to begin with, but then I’m out and about, in the park grabbing a coffee, someone asks me a few questions, but I haven’t really done my makeup, so I only partake in the minimum amount of small talk. Then we head to the supermarket and the same thing happens. We get home around 3pm and I feel so undone that I switch into sweats already.

Scenario two. Same story, but I choose to wear a cool cotton drawstring trouser, a vest, layer a striped shirt around my waist, blow-out my hair, pop on some good BB cream (nothing fancy, but enough), and add a cool thong sandal. This version of the same “me” shows up completely differently. I’ve probably made a few mum friends in the park and got home only to text a friend and invite her over for tea with the kids.

Why does this happen?

Confidence usually comes after an action, not before it. So when we wake up and choose to wear something that boosts our confidence, our brain starts associating those clothes with capable actions. It literally begins sending signals that prepare us for the day ahead, predicting we’ll do something. Our energy lifts, our confidence follows, and this is why they call it dopamine dressing. (Like not wanting to go to the gym, putting activewear on and suddenly feeling more energised… clothes provoke the feelings and emotions you relate to them)

And we all know dopamine as a feeling. After the gym. Or after you’ve bought something you absolutely love and can’t wait to wear. So what if we applied that to our everyday? That’s what I want to do here on Substack, and across my Instagram channel: get the point across that style is something worth prioritising because of the effect it can have on how we feel.

I’ve been putting this theory to the test over the last few weeks, now that we’re in full swing of the summer holidays. Quite frankly, I’m trying to max out on the feel-good moments so I can better enjoy my days out with the kids. I can’t quite stretch to the salmon facials, so I’ve opted for Uniqlo instead…

It also tends to be the point in the year when getting dressed slips down the priority list. Not because we have stopped caring, but because our brains are busy keeping tiny humans alive, entertained and hydrated.

I’ve always believed that clothes can do something rather wonderful during the busy seasons of our life though... They can make an occasion out of something otherwise ordinary. Yes they won’t stop the children arguing over an inflatable flamingo, but they can make you feel a little more like yourself while the chaos plays out around you.

A place where I’ve already done the scrolling, researching, comparing and overthinking for you, so that you don’t have to. I work out what’s actually worth your attention and, more importantly, what will genuinely slot into a busy mum’s wardrobe rather than look lovely online but never leaving the hanger once purchased.

So how can we make the most of these weeks with our kids, while making sure everyone in the family has their allocated, and much needed, “me time”?

This is where I really think clothes are can surprisingly come into play - If I've planned a fun day with the kids - a museum, meeting friends at a park, exploring somewhere new ect - how can I make sure I feel good about myself, so I can show up happier, less stressed and generally have a better time? We all know the strange power an outfit has on your mood... If I nip to Tesco’s in yesterday's joggers and a messy bun, I avoid people and hope I don’t bump into someone I know. Put me in a good pair of jeans, a white tee and a baseball cap, and I'm available for small talk! Wearing clothes you love is a thing…

Our energy is often lower in the summer for reasons that usually answer to "Mummy?", so small acts of self-care become even more important, and getting dressed is 100% one of them.

Looking back, it was also part of my personal style. I always had the same colour, and if I ever veered from it or chose a different shade, my outfits felt somehow less like “me”.

Thing is, I never particularly enjoyed the process.

Back then, though, the boredom was softened by conversation. An hour in the salon often turned into a juicy catch-up with the manicurist; discussions about tube strikes, celebrity gossip, holiday plans, or the wildly interesting lives of fellow salon goers. It felt social. A small pause in the day, and a chance to hear about somebody else's life.

But this chatter in the salon has dwindled, and I fear it is not coming back.

A few months ago, when I decided on this departure from the gel mani, I looked around and found the scene pretty depressing. Everyone was plugged into their phones, AirPods in, heads down, unable to even hear conversations, let alone partake in them. It was sad.

I felt sad for the salon, and for all the women in it.

Think of the uplifting or helpful chats that could have been had. The recommendations, the funny stories, the missed opportunities to find out about someone else’s life while we push through the ten-minute soak-off. All missed as we scroll through emails, Instagram, or whatever else fills the time.

For me, having my nails done had become less of a treat and more of a recurring maintenance task. Especially as a mum. An hour and a bit of mild boredom every two weeks, repeated indefinitely because once you start, the grow-out somehow looks worse than having nothing on at all.

There are practical reasons too.

Gel manicures aren’t particularly kind to nails. While they’re not inherently damaging when applied and removed correctly, they’re hardly nourishing either. There are the UV lamps, the removal process, the recommended downtime, the fingerless gloves people now wear for protection.

Since stopping, I’ve noticed my nails are stronger, clearer and generally healthier looking, and it cost me about £5 worth of cuticle oil I religiously apply before bed.

Because gel manicures and maintenance are costly.

Once you factor in removal - which is fairly essential unless you enjoy peeling it off while simultaneously ruining your nail beds - two appointments a month can easily cost £100-£150.

Save that for a couple of months and you’ve got yourself a very decent pair of AGOLDE jeans. It is little swaps like that that can build a wardrobe you genuinely love over time; not through one big shopping trip, but through lots of small choices that slowly add up over time.

So yes, for now, I am parking the gel manicures. Not because I think they’re terrible or because I think everyone should stop. But because somewhere along the way, something that once felt enjoyable started to feel like another mundane thing to maintain.

Instead, I've switched to a simple express manicure with no polish. Twenty minutes, tidy nails, and enough time for a proper chat with the manicurist. You learn all sorts.

I think one of the things we often forget when it comes to summer dressing, is just how easy it is to mix and match one great summer base for a variety of different occasions. And thank goodness - because we all know packing space can be pretty tight at this time of year, especially when you have an entourage of children and their various swimming shoes (non slips, jellies, and the rock pool gripers) and all the other holiday essentials that somehow take priority over your own clothes.

I think we’re naturally creatures of habit, we gravitate towards what we know. Familiarity feels safe, comfortable and reassuringly like us. It’s one of the reasons I love the idea of the functional self and think it’s such a useful lens through which to approach a wardrobe. As in, how can we use clothes to help us function at our best for what we do everyday?

I feel like modern life can make us feel as though we’re constantly supposed to be reinventing ourselves; a new routine, a fresh coat of paint in the hallway, a newer version of who we are… But I actually think there’s beauty in the opposite.

There’s beauty in creating a life - and a wardrobe - that just simply helps your functional self thrive. It goes back to being true to yourself and understanding what genuinely lifts you up, boosts your energy and self-esteem.

And so when it comes to shoes, those three pairs you wear the most will tell you a lot about your functional self, your lifestyle & what you love most about style. After styling many women in this season of life, I have come to the conclusion that you only really need three great pairs per-season (weather season that is!)

The three summer styles I see women reaching for again and again are: a sandal, a trainer and an elevated flat. That’s it.

These three should be thoughtfully chosen and tailored to your own personal taste. Are you more minimal? More feminine? Do you love chunkier shoes, a pop of colour, or something classic? Or sporty? Each personality will warrant a slightly different version of these essential 3 styles.

But I wanted to share some ideas below that feel current this summer.

Beauty trends at the moment feel oddly binary. This isn’t the 80’s where experimenting with blue mascara and various eyeshadows felt playful, expressive, and low stakes. This era is more: get botox or don’t. Book in your salmon DNA injectables and laser-peeled facials, or risk feeling as though you’re somehow falling behind (or ageing ahead). I think there is a subtle anxiety attached to modern beauty culture that we don’t talk about much, and I think that it can unconsciously leave women feeling as though they are somehow not quite good enough in comparison.

But, perhaps unlike modern beauty, style still leaves room for stamps of individuality. It helps you choose who you want to be that day, and how you want to feel. I think of it as a form of self-care because you can quite literally dress and present yourself however you want to - and there’s something incredibly exciting about that.

A mum surviving on four hours sleep can still throw on a great pair of trousers, gold hoops and a cool slim-line trainer and feel cool for an afternoon. I think clothes ask something slightly different of us than beauty sometimes does. Rather than encouraging us to “fix” ourselves, they allow us to express who we are at that particular moment in time…. and I love that.

I want all of us here to grab hold of this idea and run with it!

The White Dress

A white cotton dress returns every summer for a reason. It’s one of the few pieces that can feel simultaneously feminine, breathable and uncomplicated.
