preordered a copy, thank you. If you ordered one of the bundles, thank you for your patience while I get everything ready. I’ll be sharing updates as we get closer to shipping. If you haven’t preordered yet, there’s still time. You can reserve your copy HERE

If you spent any time online recently, you've probably seen the debate about adult children cutting contact with their parents. Some people say therapy and social media have made it too easy to walk away from family. Others argue that estrangement usually comes after years of trying, years of hoping things would change, and finally deciding they probably won't.

As I read through those conversations, I kept thinking we were asking the wrong question. The debate quickly turns into choosing sides. Either the adult child is ungrateful, or the parent must have been awful. Real families are rarely that simple.

I've seen people use the language of boundaries to avoid conversations they simply don't want to have, and I've also seen families use the language of forgiveness to pressure someone back into the same relationship without anything actually changing.

Neither tells us very much.

Sometimes creating distance is the healthiest decision a person can make. Some relationships remain controlling, abusive, or emotionally unsafe despite repeated attempts to repair them. But I also don't think reconciliation means pretending nothing happened.

If the relationship is going to move forward, I find myself asking different questions. Was the hurt acknowledged? Has anyone taken responsibility? Has the behavior actually changed? Can both people speak honestly without fearing what will happen next? Are boundaries respected, or are they treated as punishment?

Those questions tell me much more than whether two people are speaking. Being family doesn’t automatically make a relationship healthy. At the same time, disagreement doesn’t automatically mean the relationship should end.

That’s why I’m fascinated by family science. I’m less interested in asking who cut whom off. I’m more interested in asking what happened in that family that made distance feel like the safest option. Because that’s usually where the story begins.

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

Vote in the poll, or leave a comment. I'm always interested in hearing how people's own family experiences shape the way they see questions like this.

Read. Share. Reflect.

If someone shared this newsletter with you, I’d love to have you here.

Connect with us on social media! Things are moving fast on the backend and I am so excited for you to see what is coming 🎉

A heads up before you keep reading. This one might be the most uncomfortable essay in this series. If your faith is something you hold closely, I want you to know I am not here to pull it apart. I am here to ask some honest questions. And I believe honest questions and deep faith can sit in the same room.

I want to start with something I heard more times than I can count in my research.

“Pray and stay.”

Three words. Said with love, said with conviction, said by people who genuinely believed they were helping. Said to women who were running out of options and looking for a reason to hold on.

Faith has done extraordinary things for families in crisis. It has provided community, language, hope, and a reason to keep going when everything else has fallen apart. I have seen that in my research and I believe it deeply. But the same communities that offered these lifelines sometimes also closed the doors.

God hates divorce. Your suffering is your testimony. Submit and God will fight for you. A praying woman does not run.

These sentences have been spoken from pulpits and in counseling rooms and across kitchen tables by people who loved God and loved the women they were speaking to. And they still caused harm. Because the language we use inside faith communities shapes what people believe is permissible. What they are allowed to want. What they are allowed to do.

My research found that faith was one of the most significant factors in women’s decisions to stay. Not fear. Not finances. Faith. The belief that endurance was holy. That suffering had a purpose. That leaving meant was failure. Spiritual and personal failure.

And the cost of that belief was paid quietly. Inside homes that looked fine from the outside. By women who had been taught that silence was the same thing as strength.

I am not writing this to tell anyone what to believe. I am writing this because I think the church — the one I love, the one many of us were raised inside — is capable of doing better. And doing better starts with being willing to ask the harder questions.

Was she staying because God told her to? Or because we never gave her permission to go?

Stay close. More is coming.

— Dr. Tani

The First House You Ever Lived In

The emotional lessons your childhood update — the exclusive pre-order bundles have sold out. Every single one. Thank you! I was not prepared for that response and I am so grateful for everyone who grabbed one. Some of what I write might be uncomfortable. It might stir something. It might make you think about people you love, or situations you have tried to make peace with. That is okay. Please sit with it. That discomfort is usually where the most important things live.

Before you knew what love was supposed to look like, your family showed you.

They showed you just by being what they were, every single day, inside the walls of the first home you ever lived in.

That home taught you what conflict means. Whether it is something you work through or something you run from. Whether silence after an argument means peace or something else entirely.

It taught you how much space you are allowed to take up. Whether your needs were welcomed or inconvenient. Whether asking for things was safe. Whether you were allowed to be difficult, or whether being easy was how you kept the love.

It taught you what to do when things get tense. Disappear. Fix it. Laugh it off. Become very still and wait for it to pass.

Many of us grew up in homes we would describe as completely normal. And yet something is still running in the background. In our marriages. In how we parent. In how quickly we abandon ourselves to keep the peace. In how much we apologize for simply existing.

The peacekeepers. The over-explainers. The ones who learned to read the room before they learned to read books.

That was training. And training runs in the background long after the original environment is gone. You are no longer in that house. But the house is still in you.

My research kept coming back to this — the relationship between what children witness and absorb at home and who they become in their own relationships years later. It is a line. And the first step to changing the pattern is knowing where it started.

There is more where this came from.

With love.

— Dr. My book just went to press. Yay! 🎉

I genuinely did not know if this day would come. If you have been here from the beginning — thank you. You showed up before there was anything to show up for, and that means everything.

Now I want to start writing here more intentionally. Actual thoughts from my research. The questions that stay with me. Starting with this one.

Have you ever looked at a family from the outside and thought — they seem fine?

We all have. And most of the time we are right. But sometimes we are not. And the unsettling part is that we rarely know the difference. Sometimes the family that seems the most fine is the one working the hardest to appear that way.

I have spent years studying what happens inside homes. Most of the dangerous things that happen in families do not happen loudly. They happen in the silence. In the things nobody talks about because talking about them would mean admitting that something in the story we have been telling about our family is not entirely true.

And that is a hard thing to admit.

Most people living inside difficult dynamics do not have a name for what they are living inside. They call it just how things are. And when something is lived long enough it stops being questioned. It becomes the air. So familiar you stop asking whether it was ever supposed to be this way.

But unnamed things do not disappear. They live in the body. They show up in our relationships. They get handed to our children without a word.

What you can name, you can finally put down.

That is what this book is about. The things that happen inside homes that look completely fine from the street. The things we have been calling normal for so long we forgot to ask whether they actually are.

Language matters. And when people finally have a word for something they have been carrying for years, something shifts. I wrote this because I want that shift for as many people as possible. Because we are all shaped by the homes we came from.

Every single one of us.

More coming soon. I promise it will be worth the notification.

But first — if you have been waiting, watching, quietly following since day one, this is your moment. The exclusive pre-order bundle is live. A personalized signed copy plus extra goodies, because this feels worth celebrating properly.

WE ARE ACTUALLY DOING THIS. 🎉🎉🎉

👉 Claim your bundle here. And thank you. For being here from the beginning.

With love and a lot of excitement,

— Dr. Tani

The Parenting Shift Nobody is Ready to Talk changing.
But not always in the ways we think.

One study showed that overprotective parenting is linked to lower mood in adolescents. Another report emphasized that children’s mental health should be treated as seriously as physical health.

And yet, nearly all parents report feeling overwhelmed. In fact, recent data shows that 97% of parents are experiencing stress, much of it tied to their children’s behavior and emotional well-being:

Something is not adding up.

This is what I think is happening

We are trying to raise emotionally healthy children
While still carrying unprocessed emotional patterns ourselves

We are protecting children more
But preparing them less

We are showing up physically
But sometimes missing them emotionally

And many adults are now realizing something uncomfortable:

You can grow up in a “good home”
And still feel unseen

This is why conversations about generational patterns are growing

Because people are starting to ask:
What exactly did I inherit… beyond love?

The work now is not perfection

It is awareness

It is noticing the small moments
Where you pause instead of react
Where you listen instead of dismiss
Where you choose differently

Because that is where cycles actually break

If this resonated, you’re exactly who I write for.

— Dr. Tani

The book is done. 30 people get It’s done. And before the rest of the world gets it, I want 30 of you to have it first.

👉 Claim your bundle here

Only 30 signed pre-order bundles are being released. Once they’re gone, that’s it. No restock, no second round. Bundles ship around July 30, 2026 and include a signed personalized paperback and a few extras I chose carefully, because this felt like something worth celebrating properly.

Now, about the book.

The House Was Never Quiet is a research-based narrative nonfiction about mothers raising children in violent homes. I wrote it as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a sister, a teacher, and a researcher. It doesn’t keep a comfortable distance from its subject. It wasn’t meant to.

Because the truth is — some things don’t get talked about in many homes. Not really. Not the abuse that never leaves a mark. Not the control dressed up as care. Not the weight of expectation dressed up as love. Not the cost of staying, or the cost of leaving. Not what happens to the children watching, and learning, quietly, that this is just what love looks like.

This book says all of it.

If you grew up in one of these homes, or loved someone who did, I wrote this for you. The book will be on Amazon and in bookstores across Nigeria from late summer 2026, but this, right here, is something different. Before the world gets it, 30 people get it first. And I'd love for you to be one of them.

👉 Get your bundle before they’re gone

I’m glad this is finally here. I hope you’ll be one of the 30.

Stay close to the conversation. Visit thefamilyscientist.com or <a You finally say it out loud. Carefully. Calmly. And within sixty seconds, you are no longer the one who needs something.

They are not feeling well. The stress has been a lot. Their head has been pounding since this morning. The conversation is over before it started. You are now the one checking in. You walk away feeling vaguely guilty for having started it, and you are not even sure how that happened.

You did everything right. Said it right. Chose the right moment. And still, somehow, you ended up managing their discomfort instead of having your concern heard.

You start second-guessing yourself. Maybe I picked the wrong time. Maybe I said it wrong.

This is what I think is happening.

In a lot of homes, being corrected feels like exposure. And that registers as a threat. The relief from that threat sometimes looks like sudden stress, illness, or a silence that stretches past the point of comfort. The feeling can be entirely genuine. But the timing is doing something. It is pulling the conversation away from the uncomfortable place toward something that feels safer.

And for the person who raised the concern, something quieter happens over time.

The relationship stays functional. Life continues. But underneath, something gets quieter and quieter. And what fills that quiet is not peace. It is a low hum of resentment you feel a little ashamed of because you cannot point to one big moment. Just a hundred small ones where you needed something and ended up tending to them instead.

This is a pattern. And it compounds.

When one person consistently escapes accountability by centering their own distress, and the other consistently shrinks to manage it, the relationship becomes uneven in a way that is hard to name but impossible to ignore.

The first step is just noticing.

Noticing how quickly the shift happens. Noticing what stays unsaid. Because once you can see it clearly, you have more choice. You can name it in the moment. “I want to come back to what I was saying.”

At some point, you have to decide what you are willing to carry. And what you are finally ready to put down.

If this resonated, share it with someone who might need to read it. And even if you don’t have all the facts, something in you won’t let it go. Someone I came across had recently moved to join her husband in a new country. On paper, it looked like a fresh start. A settling. A new chapter.

But sometimes what looks like a fresh start is actually isolation.
One of the first things that stood out to me was how quickly her access to community narrowed, not by circumstance, but by him. A new place, unfamiliar surroundings, and yet no real pathway to grounding, connection, or familiarity.

When I spoke to her, she sounded… hungry. Not just for conversation. For connection. The kind that makes you feel like yourself again.

Later, when I invited her out, she told me she needed permission. Not in the casual, respectful way couples check in. But in a way that made her feel… managed.

Thanks for reading! passage that stayed with me long after I wrote it. It wasn’t easy to put into words, but it felt important to try.

I’m sharing it here with you first.

Many of these women were functioning but not flourishing. They were doing their best for their children, often from an empty cup. And when something becomes part of the air you breathe, you don’t always notice you’re suffocating.

I know a woman who used to say her house always felt like it was holding its breath. She learned to listen for her husband’s footsteps before the door even opened. On days when his mood felt heavy, she kept the children close, lowered her voice, turned down the television, and sent them to bed early — not because they were tired, but because she wanted the night to pass quietly.

Later, when the house finally slept, she would sit alone and replay the day in her mind, wondering what she could have done differently, even though she knew the problem was never really her. Her children remember her as calm, gentle, and always present. What they did not see was how much energy it took for her to stay that way.

I remember another woman describing how, as a child, she could tell her mother’s mood by the way plates were placed on the table. If they were set down quietly, the evening would be calm. If they were placed sharply, everyone moved carefully. She learned to read rooms before she learned to name emotions.

Over time, these lessons settle into the nervous system. They don’t feel like lessons anymore. They feel like instinct.

Some things are hard to say out loud, but they still need to be said somewhere.

And sometimes, seeing it written down makes it clearer in a way that conversation doesn’t.

If this stays with you, I’d really like to know. You can reply to this email. I read every message.

— Dr. Tani

Thanks for reading! able to stop thinking about it.

Men handing over their wives. Fathers surrendering their daughters. Communities defending what should have been unthinkable. And the question that keeps coming up is:

How could they not see it?

That question is too simple. Because the human mind is not weak. It is highly adaptable.

It’s psychology, not stupidity
The human mind is wired for:

Authority bias — we trust those positioned as leaders.

Social conformity — we follow what the group normalizes.

Cognitive dissonance — we adjust reality to reduce discomfort.

Gradual desensitization — small compromises make bigger ones possible

No one wakes up one day and accepts abuse or thinks abuse is okay. People are conditioned into it. Slowly. Repeatedly. Systematically.

This is not just about one group
It’s easy to call this extreme. But the pattern is global. Any system that discourages questioning, equates obedience with goodness and concentrates power without accountability creates the conditions where abuse can hide in plain sight.

Religion can carry it.
Culture can carry it.
Family systems can carry it.

The mechanism is the same, and the most unsettling part to me is that it all felt normal. Because once the mind adapts, abuse stops registering as abnormal.

I’ve been sitting with this
The questions feel heavier than the answers. Are we teaching people how to question safely? Do our environments allow disagreement? Are we raising awareness…or just obedience? Because sometimes abuse doesn’t just continue, it gets quietly reinforced.

A quieter connection
As I prepare to release my book, I find myself coming back to this. Different context. Different stories. Same underlying question: What do we learn to normalize before we learn to question it?

If you’ve watched the documentary, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What stayed with you?

— Dr. Tani

Thanks for reading! But here we are.

It started with things I grew up hearing. Not always said directly, but said enough that you just knew. Be patient. Protect the home. Don’t bring shame. Endure.

And I grew up watching how sympathy and judgment could live in the same breath. A woman could be pitied for what she was going through and questioned for why she stayed, sometimes by the same person, in the same conversation.

That never sat right with me. But it also never felt surprising. And that’s the part that troubled me most. That something could feel so wrong and still feel so normal.

I couldn’t shake it. So I started asking questions. Talking to Nigerian mothers. Really listening, not just to what they said, but to what sat underneath it. What felt too heavy to put into words.

Some of those conversations I still carry.

At some point I realized this couldn’t just live in research papers or in my head. It needed to be somewhere people could actually sit with it.

So I wrote The House Was Never Quiet.

Not to hand anyone easy answers. Just to name the things that usually go unnamed. To ask harder questions about what we call normal and who that normal is quietly costing.

The book will be released this summer. Between now and then, I’ll be sharing more from the work. The things I found. The things that stayed with me. The questions that haven’t left me. And then some more.

That’s what this space is going to be about.

Family. Culture. The patterns we inherit and the ones we pass on.

If these questions have ever crossed your mind, this space will make sense.

— Dr. Tani
