The Trump administration, interestingly, hasn’t really bothered to summon performative veneration for our armed forces the way past Republican administrations have, and now Donald & Co. are hanging our troops out to dry while they’re still in the service.

The Trump regime treats our service members with a shocking disregard for their wellbeing, making it quite clear that they see them just as they do the rest of the American population: as suckers and losers to be extorted, exploited, and then discarded when their usefulness ends.

Nothing makes that more clear than the horrifying saga of the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Last week, a story appeared in the military newspaper Stars & Stripes about how at least two and as many as six fed-up sailors on the USS Lincoln attempted to or succeeded in literally “jumping overboard.”

This is an absurd sanitization of what these desperate, beleaguered sailors were actually doing, which was attempting suicide.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been at sea for nearly a year, and hasn’t returned to port in a record 38 weeks.

It has been in the Persian Gulf, raining death and destruction on Iran as part of Donald Trump’s illegal war of aggression that has accomplished little except the slaughter of innocent Iranian civilians and the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Text messages from sailors reveal horrific shipboard conditions. “We haven’t had anything fresh but meat cause it’s freezed. Sometimes it gets here rotten,” said one sailor. Sharing a picture of a dry tub of cereal, he added: “Haven’t had milk in 3 months.”

Officials have acknowledged further issues like clogged toilets and poor ventilation leading to mildewed showers — but mostly have just flatly denied the allegations.

Concerns over low morale and the mental health issues affecting the men and women who have been locked in a floating tin can all summer in the Middle East have been “dismissed” by the Pentagon, according to their families.

The wife of one of the sailors who successfully jumped told MS NOW that she wasn’t even informed until four days later. “I think that it was handled very poorly because they didn’t inform me and they didn’t want me to know, and they’re just trying to cover this up.”

Her husband had previously gone to his chain of command and medical staff about his struggles but told his wife they were “brushing him off.”

Surely our leaders are deeply concerned about the abhorrent conditions being endured by our service members and are working diligently to, um, right the ship…right?

Nope!

Secretary of War (Crimes) Pete Hegseth spoke to the media last Thursday and complained that the conditions on the ship are being “completely misrepresented.” The gaslighter explained, “Listen, we make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every single moment.”

Now stories from other deployed American ships are starting to, well, leak, and things are not much better there.

With a nearly TRILLION-dollar Pentagon budget, serving our troops rotten food and making them use mouldy bathrooms is a choice, not an unavoidable hardship, as are the other decisions made during Hegseth’s stewardship of the most expensive military on the planet.

Captain Compensate, firmly in the running with his boss for world’s most insecure man-child, actually kicked off his tenure as Secretary of Defense by *checks notes* trashing our troops and generals for being fat, woke, and gay, disparaging them for failing to live up to his imaginary, action-movie fantasy of what Real Tough Grizzled Man Soldiers™ should look and act like.

Then, when Trump and Hegseth launched their illegal war against Iran in February, it quickly became clear that they’d made zero preparations to actually keep American service members stationed within harm’s reach safe.

On the very first day of the war, an Iranian drone slammed into a US base at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait, killing six Americans and wounding dozens more.

Months earlier, the Army’s 103rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command’s force-protection assessments “recommended against positioning any personnel at Shuaiba Port,” because it lacked any of the defenses needed to keep troops safe in a new age of warfare.

Their warnings were predictably ignored, and, as usual, Trump officials claimed the soldiers who had spoken out to the media were lying.

Across the Middle East, US military units had to pull their troops out of barracks and hide them in civilian hotels, in violation of international military law, because they had failed to account for the possibility that their bases could be targeted by retaliatory strikes from Iran or Iran-backed proxies in the region.

And when the US casualty count started ticking up, the Trump administration simply lied to the public about just how many were dead and injured. But the callous disregard for those making the ultimate sacrifice for their country did not stop there.

When the bodies of fallen service members arrived at Dover Air Force Base for their dignified transfers, Trump had the nerve to show up and have his picture taken with the coffins — even though the families explicitly asked that no photographs be taken.

For these incompetent, ignorant, former television personalities, the United States military exists for the sole purpose of furthering their imperial ambitions and allowing them to revel in their sadistic power fantasies, which, of course, include inflicting death and senseless destruction across the world.

Casualties are just numbers on a stat sheet to Trump and Hegseth, not American human beings with feelings and families.

But El-Sayed, an epidemiologist, former public health director, and former Rhodes scholar, has parried their initial salvo of attacks so deftly that Donald Trump and the Republicans are going to have to sharpen their crayons and go back to the drawing board. That shit just ain’t gonna work this time around.

Abdul’s team had barely finished cleaning up from the primary victory party before the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) dropped their first attack ad against him, and it was immediately clear how ugly this race was always going to get.

“ABDULRAHMAN EL-SAYED…THE MOST RADICAL CANDIDATE IN AMERICA,” booms the ominous voiceover. The image shifts to an out-of-context clip of El-Sayed saying, “I’m damn dangerous!”

The super-scary voiceover continues, trotting out tired Islamophobic othering and patently false accusations, desperately trying to paint El-Sayed, a lifelong Michigander, as “too radical, too dangerous” and “wrong for Michigan,” accusing him of supporting Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood political group.

Cherry-picking gotcha pull quotes for attack ads is nothing new, of course. Did El-Sayed recently declare, “I’m damn dangerous?” In fact, he did. But context is everything. Let’s have a quick look at what he actually said:

“I’ll just say this. Go ask a child who needed a pair of glasses in Detroit if I’m dangerous. Go ask the folks who could not breathe because of smokestacks spewing out sulfur dioxide if I’m dangerous.

Go ask the parents of kids who are going to school that were leaded if I’m dangerous. Go ask the people flooded in medical debt if I’m dangerous. I think what they’ll tell you is: he’s the best friend you might have if you want government to work for you.

I’ll tell you what: if you’re AIPAC, I’m pretty damn dangerous. If you’re Big Pharma, I’m dangerous. If you’re Big Tech and want to put a data center in your backyard, I’m dangerous. If you’re a big bank that wants to collude against us, I am dangerous. If you’re a monopolist who wants to raise our prices, I’m dangerous. If you’re Chuck Schumer, I’m pretty damn dangerous. And I think it’s about damn time we had Democrats who are willing to be dangerous for all the people rigging our policies against us.”

This quote gives us an understanding of why the Republican attacks have been so quick and so dirty: El-Sayed is naming, shaming, and vowing to take on the entrenched dark-money machine, hitting all the pressure points that speak to disaffected voters — on both sides of the aisle.

Everyone’s healthcare bills are too high. Everyone’s grocery bills are too high. Everyone detests data centers. These are bread-and-butter issues that impact almost everyone, and vowing to confront them head-on is one compelling way to create a winning coalition.

Republicans cannot run on any sort of meaningful track record — unless you find yourself among the one percenters — so they’re tripling down on what they know best: xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia.

But it’s not 2003 anymore, and that shit is not going to work this time — especially with a gifted candidate capable of dismissing their attacks and reframing the narrative like El-Sayed.

At a recent rally, El-Sayed flipped the script on his GOP opponent, Mike Rogers, for repeatedly Barack HUSSEIN Obama-ing his name — and turned Rogers’ own name into a devastatingly effective punchline in the process:

“Now, Mike, I’m just gonna remind you, if you don’t know how to say the name, keep the name out of your damn mouth. Or just call me Abdul,” said El-Sayed.

“But I’ve got some opinions about his name,” he continued. “See, it’s very fitting for him, ‘Rogers.’ Because that’s his answer every time a corporation or Donald Trump tells him to do something.

“Mike, we need you to put a data center in the backyard. Roger!

“Mike, we need you to hike their prescription drug prices. Roger!

“Mike, we need you to rubber-stamp this war we shouldn’t be fighting. Roger!

“Mike — and this one’s Donald Trump — I need you to lick these boots. Roger!

“And I think I speak for all of us here in Michigan when I say that we are done with Rogers. Go back to Florida where you belong!”

El-Sayed is not a one-trick pony. The man produces mic-drop moments seemingly on demand. Every time Republicans come at him with a predictable attack, he finds a way to quickly turn it around and seize control of the narrative.

When Trump posted a wildly racist tweet featuring a photo of himself and his third wife, Melania, opposite El-Sayed and his wife of 20 years, Dr. Sarah Jukaku, with the caption “TWO VERY DIFFERENT AMERICAS,” El-Sayed wasted no time dismantling the fraudster’s tired trope.

Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, El-Sayed said, “He’s right. One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joined in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you, or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family and know that that family is going to have the good things. So yes, you’ve got two different visions of America.”

This is precisely the kind of authentic, locked-in messaging discipline that Zohran Mamdani rode all the way to the mayor’s office in New York City last year. And with headwinds already in Democrats’ favor this election year, the same can happen in Michigan with Abdul El-Sayed.

The rising Democratic star exudes an inspiring confidence in himself and his unapologetically progressive message and a palpable, deep-rooted hostility toward the failed policies of a Republican Party that long ago sold itself out to the highest corporate bidder. This gift gives him an aura of authenticity and star power that Mike Rogers, who genuinely seems like he’d rather be back in his adopted home of Florida, simply cannot match.

The bigotry and xenophobia that Republicans have relied on for so long to poison political campaigns and convince voters to cast ballots against their own economic self-interest simply will not work in this race. El-Sayed can take a punch and respond in kind with a flurry of his own.

Fox News just released a slew of new polls from battleground Senate races showing Democrats in the lead in races we previously thought were just a shot in the dark, like in deep-red Texas and Iowa.

Digging a little deeper, and we can see that Democratic inroads into red territory go even further than we thought:

But wait! There’s more! Blue Texas believers, hold on to your cowboy hats, because that same poll found former school president and current state Rep. Gina Hinojosa in a statistical tie with eleven-year incumbent Greg Abbott.

This is where it gets REALLY interesting. James Talarico is an incredible candidate, but he started his campaign with a few major advantages. His opponent, Ken Paxton, does not have an incumbency cushion, was forced to fight a vicious primary battle to get here in the first place, and is dragged down by a slew of scandals.

Gina was polling at 42% back in January and has climbed up to even things out with Greg Abbott, thanks to a campaign laser-focused on the issues that Texans really care about, like healthcare, the economy, and opposing AI data centers.

Democratic state auditor Rob Sand is also locked in a dead heat with carpet-bagging career political operative Zach Lahn in the race for Iowa’s governorship – a race in which Fox’s new poll shows Sand favored by 53 percent to 44%.

Again, do not get too excited, but the range of outcomes of the 2026 midterms now includes two governorship pickups, the House, and a 53-seat Senate majority.

And it’s only August.

They say a fish rots from the head down – which Democratic Alaska Senate candidate and lifelong salmon fisher Mary Peltola knows all too well – and the head of the Republican Party, Donald Trump, is about as maggoty as it gets.

Trump is all but the most unpopular president in American history (beaten only by Nixon in his final days) and he’s underwater on the most important issues to everyday voters: gas and the economy.

The American economy has slowed to a crawl, posting just 1.5% growth and a very tepid 57,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2026 – and may well get worse before it gets better as the aftershocks of Iran War II start to roll in.

To cap it all off, in his infinite idiocy, Trump has elected to make everything even worse, announcing a new slew of tariffs on 80 countries and pushing prices on basic sundries even higher while ending Medicare D subsidies, pricing out millions of seniors who need those drugs to stay alive.

So all these terrible numbers? They’re probably going to get a LOT worse by the time November rolls around.

The winds are blowing against the Republican Party, and we cannot afford to miss this opportunity to make sure Democrats retake both the House and Senate this fall – and start to put our country back together again.

The Chinese military general and master strategist Sun Tzu once wrote, “If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Donald Trump appears to take this not as a warning but a directive: know nothing, succumb, repeat.

In the two weeks since Trump restarted his illegal war in Iran, we are right back to square one. US service members are dying, US bases are being pummeled, Pentagon officials are leaking to the media about how Pete Hegseth’s strategies aren’t working, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed by Iran (again), and the Red Sea is now under threat by Ansar Allah. Oh, gas prices are way up again, too.

The only thing that’s really changed is the American people’s opinion of the war, which has now gone from bad to absolutely abysmal — even among the MAGA faithful.

In just two months, MAGA’s approval of the Iran war has dropped by 13 points, from 50% to 37%. Polls show that 65% of Americans think “we should make a deal to end the war as quickly as possible,” and 48% say the US should end the war immediately, even without a deal, which, frankly speaking, would be tantamount to defeat.

The war was never very popular in the first place because in its nihilistic hubris, the Trump administration never bothered to articulate any kind of credible justification for launching it, assuming that the Iranian regime would be toppled in the space of a few days.

With the resumption of hostilities, all Trump can do now is hoot and holler about the need to stop Iran’s nuclear program, which falls flat because that is a problem of his own creation since he tore up President Obama’s very successful nuclear peace deal out of sheer spite. Also, didn’t we already completely obliterate their nuclear program last summer?

So it’s a pretty tough sell to the American people to argue that we need to sacrifice more American lives and give the military $1.5 trillion to fight a war we started for no clearly defined reason, to resolve a problem of Trump’s own creation, with no end in sight.

But let’s be honest here. More important than any of that is the end-all-be-all of American politics: the price of gas. And boy is it about to get even more expensive!

Oil is already back above $100 a barrel. The national average for gas is already up nearly 5% in just the last week, while the lifeblood of the American economy — diesel — just experienced its largest price jump since the first week of the war in March.

Trump was able to artificially keep gas prices under control at home during the first half of the war by draining our Strategic Petroleum Reserve — but the SPR is now at its lowest level since 1983 and will not be able to sustain America’s insatiable appetite for fuel indefinitely.

As the price of gas rises, so too will the price of everything else. And the price of everything else is ALREADY much higher than it was before thanks to Trump’s senseless tariffs — about 3.5% higher than last year, in fact.

“The longer the war is in place, at this current level of intensity, the worse it is for consumers,” said Olu Sonola, the head of US economics at Fitch Ratings.

But surely the president is concerned about the well-being of the American electorate and is taking responsibility for the suffering he’s heaping on them, right?

LOL. Of course not. Trump has spent the past two months either outright lying to voters about how fast prices are dropping or outright mocking concerns about affordability, calling it a “made-up word” invented by Democrats. Sure, Donnie.

All this adds up to a nightmare scenario for congressional Republicans, who are beginning to openly panic.

The House just passed its SECOND war powers resolution to end the conflict in Iran, which was immediately blocked in the Senate, but allowed a good number of House Republicans to try to distance themselves from this debacle.

Slowly but surely, the behind-the-scenes hand-wringing is becoming public. “We’re preparing for the bottom to fall out,” said one GOP operative to POLITICO’s Playbook. “Republicans are running out of runway here to improve their political fortunes before November.”

“Nobody can really defend it…It’s never great for the party in power when the commander-in-chief is going to Dover to accept the bodies of American soldiers,” he added.

Another unnamed source close to the White House flatly admitted, “They don’t have a plan here… This is a classic escalation trap.”

Iran is locked in an existential crisis for its own survival and knows all they have to do is outlast an impatient United States. Trump, on the other hand, is drowning in a morass of his own making and dragging his party — and the country — down with him while time on the clock dwindles.

The average American cannot fill up his truck or make the mortgage payment with videos of Iranian bridges burning, and widows cannot dry their tears with empty promises of vengeance on Truth Social.

Long before Trump’s now-infamous phone call encouraging FIFA President Gianni Infantino to “look into” the controversial red card shown to US Men’s National Team star striker Folarin Balogun last week, FIFA had already established itself as one of the world’s most notoriously and unabashedly crooked organizations.

Anyone interested in a little background on just how radioactively rotten to the core FIFA is need not look very far. The last two nations to host the biggest sports spectacle in the world were Qatar (2022) and Russia (2018), for gosh sakes. You will not be surprised to learn that tens of millions of dollars in bribes were doled out to various FIFA officials to secure the votes needed to approve said hosting rights.

All that’s to say, FIFA is no stranger to controversy, a fact that regularly extends to activity on the pitch. So it was on Wednesday, July 1, when a seemingly routine coming together of Balogun and Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović in the 64th minute resulted in a universally panned red card for the transcendent American striker. Balogun, who had minutes before put the US ahead with a triumphant goal to end the first half, was unceremoniously ejected from the game and set for a mandatory one-match ban, effective immediately.

In normal times, that would’ve essentially been the end of the controversy, save for the interminable drone of pundits and podcasters alike lamenting just the latest incident of inconsistent refereeing on the sport’s biggest stage. No less than four other players in this World Cup alone have been spared red cards for equal or more egregious offenses, including, unsurprisingly, the undisputed face of the sport, one Lionel Messi.

But these are not normal times.

On Sunday, FIFA made the truly extraordinary announcement that Balogun’s suspension would be, uh, suspended, meaning the USMNT would have their most lethal scorer available against perennial heavyweight contenders Belgium in Monday night’s Round of 16 clash.

Almost immediately, rumors that Trump had intervened began to spread. This morning, the wannabe dictator confirmed that he had, in fact, phoned Infantino personally over the weekend. “All I did was ask for a review. I didn’t say, ‘You have to do this,’” Trump said from Oval Office with the nonchalance of a two-bit mobster. Oh, he also added that he “didn’t think it was a foul.” Good to know, Donnie.

Let us not lose sight of the ultimate irony in Donald’s foolish gambit: the president just personally pressured FIFA to reinstate Folarin Balogun, a man who literally would not be suiting up for the United States were it not for the birthright citizenship Trump personally tried to erase from the US Constitution by executive fiat.

You see, Balogun’s Nigerian parents were visiting Brooklyn back in 2001 when his very pregnant mother at the time was stopped from boarding a flight back to England due to legitimate medical concerns. Folarin was born on US soil a short while later and the rest is history.

The blowback to the MAGA cult leader’s unconscionable meddling has been swift and severe, outside America, anyway. Belgium is demanding — and rightly deserves — answers.

Balogun and the USMNT have been put in an impossible position. Their incredible run in the tournament thus far — three wins in four matches — is now firmly flattened in the rearview mirror, and the world will watch tonight with intense scrutiny.

If they win, detractors and neutrals alike will understandably cry foul and every subsequent success will be tainted with the dreaded mark of unworthiness.

If they lose, they will be mocked and unfairly maligned as entitled “cheaters” who couldn’t muster a victory even with a wannabe dictator’s stubby hand tipping the scales in their favor.

While highly unlikely, US head coach Mauricio Pochettino and the Americans have the opportunity to do something truly extraordinary. They can sit Balogun this evening and go out and beat Belgium anyway. They almost certainly won’t, but they could. And probably should.

In addition to standing up for fundamental fairness and rejecting outside interference on the game’s biggest stage, such an act would send an even more powerful message that transcends the sport: Donald Trump is just one man, and despite his insatiable desire and uncanny ability to center himself in every fucking thing at every moment of every day, he can, if so desired, simply be ignored.

For 25 magical days, the World Cup has truly delivered. From Scotland’s Tartan Army drinking Boston dry to throngs Algerian diehards marching joyously through the streets of Lawrence, Kansas, to Japanese fans staying long after the final whistles to help clean up the stadiums where their team played, millions of soccer lovers from all over the planet have descended upon North America, putting the best of humanity on display, both on the pitch and off. Twenty-five glorious days where the beautiful game, the indomitable human spirit, and the kind of nationalism that mercifully doesn’t result in body counts reigned supreme.

And Donald Trump just had to come along and fuck it all up. He has spent the past week reminding us all about how little he actually cares for this nation, its people, the symbols it cherishes, and the values it holds dear.

He’s raining toxic smog over Washington DC; he turned the celebration of our 250th anniversary into a cheap, sweaty, partisan pep rally; rewrote the Declaration of Independence to make it more MAGA; and now he’s dragging the reputation of our national men’s soccer team into the muck with him.

Can we please be allowed to enjoy ONE THING without him ruining it?

The Supreme Court got a LOT wrong over the past few days: they upheld bigoted anti-trans laws, greatly expanded Donald Trump’s ability to fire whomever he wants (except at the Federal Reserve; musn’t upset the plutocrats!), and opened the floodgates for dark money interests to further infect political campaigns and coordinate directly with candidates.

But the most alarming development came from a decision they technically happened to get right — upholding birthright citizenship — albeit with some downright alarming caveats.

On its face, the wonky 6-3 ruling preserving the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship would seem like a win. The fact that the ruling wasn’t unanimous is a huge frickin’ problem. There is ZERO question whether or not birthright citizenship is constitutional; it literally says so, right there in the Constitution.

The first section of the 14th Amendment, passed in 1868 after the Civil War to prevent Confederate racists, “states rights” proponents, and future Republicans from denying citizenship to Black and Brown children, reads as follows:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.

Seems pretty straightforward, right? Not a lot of wiggle room there. All persons born in the United States are citizens.

But that very plain language failed to stop no less than THREE Supreme Court justices from tossing nearly 150 years of precedent in the trash and concocting a slew of preposterous excuses in order to justify giving Trump whatever he wants.

Justice Samuel Alito’s dissent was such a load of incoherent bullshit that he got called out by Chief Justice John Roberts in his opinion, who wrote “[Alito] does not explain how that exception can be squared with his view of the text.”

But the real kicker is not how close we came to overturning a fundamental American right just because the MAGA cult leader said we should — it’s how the president tried to do it.

With this ruling, four Supreme Court Justices signaled that they believe Donald Trump can simply rewrite the Constitution by executive order.

This is a five-alarm fire for our democracy. It is an announcement that these four radical justices are so committed to the ideological project of MAGA white supremacy that they are willing to crown Donald Trump an absolute monarch and grant him unprecedented authority to do literally whatever he wants…as long as the meat grinder of runaway capitalism keeps turning, of course.

To add insult to injury, those same justices then immediately voted to remove limits on dark money campaign coordination between super PACs and candidates, again giving free rein for the pedoligarchy to run roughshod over our democracy and prop up their bought-and-paid-for minions with their ill-gotten fortunes.

Ever since Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat in 2016, we have watched right-wing justices erode nearly every freedom and every right we hold dear while also ruling that almost every Democratic-authored initiative or project has somehow been unconstitutional.

Enough is enough.

If Democrats are committed to the Constitution, to our democracy, and to the freedoms we hold dear, it’s time to pack the high court with enough new justices that they’ll have to move out of the current Supreme Court building altogether.

Graham was a vocal advocate of George W. Bush’s calamitous Iraq War. He also advocated for leaving American troops in Afghanistan literally forever. And today he is a passionate supporter of Trump’s illegal war against Iran, saying things that truly beggar belief in their stunning disregard for human life — to the point where he’s even been criticized by members of his own war-friendly party.

After Graham declared on Fox News that “I go back to South Carolina, I’m asking them to send their sons and daughters over to the Middle East,” fellow South Carolinian GOP Rep. Nancy Mace posted:

“Lindsey Graham needs to be removed from the Situation Room. I don’t want to hear one word from a guy with no kids, desperately sending our sons and daughters into war on the ground in Iran.”

Undeterred, Graham is now publicly advocating for US military intervention in both Lebanon and Cuba.

He’s literally the walking, talking, war-hawking embodiment of this famous meme:

Once upon a time, Lindsey fancied himself a respectable bipartisan, a throwback to an age where free-thinking lawmakers would brandish their moral compasses and occasionally break with their own party on complex, contentious issues of the day — until Trump came along, that is.

Graham was once one of Trump’s loudest critics, declaring in 2016, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed.......and we will deserve it.”

Once Trump won, of course, Graham swiftly sold his soul and reliably transformed himself into one of the most obsequious MAGA bootlickers to darken the once-hallowed halls of the Senate. This, more than any other transgression, will be his downfall.

On Tuesday night, Dr. Andrews won the Democratic primary in South Carolina, earning the right to square off with Graham mano a wo-mano in November and put his abysmal record and fealty to the military-industrial complex under the harshest of spotlights. Andrews has dubbed Graham a “swamp creature” — a label that truly fits. He has become the ultimate insider at this point, shilling for ever-bigger Pentagon budgets and bending over backwards to give the disproportionately powerful Israel lobby everything it asks for and more.

In that same Fox News interview where he vowed to send other people’s kids to die in Iran on behalf of Israel, Graham warned anti-war naysayers in the MAGAverse that “I’m not with you, I’m with Israel. I will be with Israel until our dying day.”

This is not exactly what the people of South Carolina — a state where nearly half the population is facing financial hardship — are hoping to hear from their elected officials.

Republican voters were promised “no more wars.”

Republican voters were promised “America First.”

Republican voters were promised cheap gas, no more inflation, and lower prices at the grocery store.

Then Trump went and attacked Iran — at the behest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — without seeking congressional authorization or bothering to offer up any legitimate justification whatsoever. And wouldn’t you know it, Lindsey Graham was among the first Republicans to rush before any camera he could find, banging the drums of war in that incredibly off-putting way that normal people who don’t dream of burning Iranian flesh find more than a little disconcerting.

Beyond the unconscionable human toll Trump’s illegal war taken, gas prices here at home are sky high, inflation is through the roof, and food prices are spiking as the world’s fertilizer supply grinds to a halt in the paralyzed Strait of Hormuz.

The blowback to Trump and his trusty enablers like Lindsey Graham is already being felt at the pollsters’ office. A March poll by Impact Research found that Graham was viewed unfavorably by 61% of voters, with 57% of respondents claiming they are “looking to vote for someone else.” Among independent voters, Graham trails Dr. Andrews by 19 points!

Despite the political headwinds knocking Republicans on their heels, electing a Democrat to statewide office in deep-red South Carolina is still going to be a long, hard, uphill battle.

But things are bad and steadily getting worse for the GOP, and Graham’s deeply off-putting enthusiasm for murder, mayhem, and destruction has ensured that the continued fallout from Trump’s Iran war will fall at least partly on his head, presenting Democrats with a singular opportunity to finally dislodge him from the Senate seat he has held for the past 23 years. We may not get another chance this good, folks.

Blind, fervent, and humiliating devotion to Donald Trump has long been the most important currency in MAGAland, but Tuesday’s primary election in Kentucky marked an exceptionally dark day for a Republican Party that just jettisoned its last molecule of principle, morality, and honor.

In the most expensive House primary ever, with $32 million spent on tv ads alone (over $300 per vote), Rep. Thomas Massie was chased out of his seat by a political nobody who was backed by a tidal wave of dark money and the blessing of Donald Trump, who has been waging a non-stop smear campaign against Massie ever since he took up the cause of releasing the Epstein Files.

Massie was one of the few Republicans willing to take a public stand to expose and prosecute the rich pedophiles in the Epstein Files — a cause once central to the MAGA mindset, that is, until it was revealed that the pages were filled with references to and accusations against their dear leader. And so, at Trump’s demand, voters immediately threw him out of office by a margin of 10 points.

While it’s a tired trope to point out that Republicans are hypocrites who stand for nothing, we are once again witnessing a new rock bottom with Republicans firing one of their own for the sin of standing up to pedophiles.

After years of complaining about the deep state, howling for the release of the Epstein files, buying stickers that say “KILL YOUR LOCAL PEDOPHILE,” demanding no more wars in the Middle East, and claiming to stand for America First, MAGA voters were more than happy to pull the lever for an Epstein cover-up candidate who was propped up by tens of millions in out-of-state dark money from pro-Israeli billionaires and AIPAC groups, who opposed Massie’s demands to end the Iran War and cut aid to Israel.

The response from the elected MAGA faithful was disturbingly honest, pledging fealty and giving Trump the ass-kissing he so desperately craves.

Of course, bootlicking MAGA foot soldiers paint a picture of Trump snapping his fingers Thanos-style and poofing his Republican adversaries out of office, but that’s not exactly right. All it took was Trump’s word, tens of millions of dollars, and personal appearances from the President and the Secretary of Defense — all to defeat a fellow Republican who, by his own words, voted with Trump 91% of the time, all because he dared to oppose him on the Epstein files. Will any of them look back and say it was worth the expense, especially if, as predicted, voters exile the new Republican Congressman into a powerless minority vote?

Maybe! Because in the MAGA cult, nothing else matters; as long as Trump is happy, they’re happy. It is the ultimate submission of both mind and soul to Donald Trump, over everything else. Even accountability for serial child sex abusers.

Just a few states away, a different political candidate was being rewarded for his loyalty to Trump, despite a recent scandal in which he protected a serial child rapist.

Texas’ wildly corrupt Attorney General, Ken Paxton, just gave a sweetheart deal to Adam Hoffman, a Waco lawyer who sexually abused a little boy for more than three years.

This obviously meant nothing to Donald Trump, who is credibly accused of committing sexual crimes against children himself, and on the very same day Massie was thrown out of office, Trump endorsed Paxton in his race against incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

Hoffman was facing life without parole, but Paxton swooped in with a sweetheart deal, reducing his sentence to a misdemeanor and giving him just 60 days in jail in exchange for pleading guilty.

“My baby was in the third grade when he started getting abused by this man,” said the survivor’s mother to the press. “Six and a half of his 14 years have been spent in counseling.”

Republican voters are widely expected to nominate Paxton in next week’s primary election.

The Republican Party is now well and truly the Party of Epstein.

Five months in, Mamdani is delivering huge wins for the working families of New York and proving why defenders of the status quo were so vehemently opposed to him — because now people are being shown what a government that actually cares about people can do for them, and that the sad state of American society is largely a policy choice.

“When families go shopping for groceries, there are not enough affordable options. We are here to change that. We are fulfilling a campaign promise of lowering prices by creating city-owned grocery stores, one in each borough. Prices will be cheaper and workers will be paid fairly.”

In just a few months, Mamdani has upended American politics with the novel idea of promising popular policies on the campaign trail and then actually delivering them.

He’s started taxing the rich with a new pied-à-terre tax on second home purchases worth over $5 million. He created an Office of Deed Theft Prevention to stop fraudsters from stealing homes. And he banned hidden hotel fees and unannounced credit card holds.

Zohran visited the White House in February and returned with a plan to build 12,000 affordable housing units after charming the pants off Donald Trump. Oh, Mamdani’s administration also filled 100,000 potholes in his first 100 days.

He took on bad landlords who neglected their units for years while raking in huge profits, winning a $31 million judgment against the Pinnacle Group for their abysmal treatment of their renters and held Rental Ripoff Hearings across the city for renters to voice their complaints and concerns.

He even guaranteed funding for NYC’s public libraries, ending the practice of forcing the library to justify its existence every time a new budget is written, and set up “soccer streets” to help kids celebrate the upcoming World Cup.

“Traditional politics would decree that in a moment like this, when a crisis is so stark, when a budget gap is so wide, that the first things cut should be parks, libraries and cultural institutions. And yet we know that these services live at the heart of our city, that they give meaning to millions of New Yorkers’ lives. Rather than cutting funding to these services, we will do the opposite and raise the baseline of what they can expect!” said Mamdani at the announcement of his new budget.

This kind of transformational change is a disaster for Republicans, of course, and they are understandably freaking out about it. In a recent interview with Fox News, House Speaker Mike Johnson lamented, “The way I describe it in summary is there are mini-Mamdanis popping up all around the country…They’re openly about socialist, Marxist ideology.

“This is something that we have never seen before in American history. This is about moving away from a constitutional republic to a communist utopian ideology. And that’s a dangerous thing for the future of the country.”

Conservatives have spent decades spreading hysterical propaganda about the inefficiency of government and how we can only ever accomplish anything meaningful by giving taxpayer handouts to corporations. But Mamdani is proving at breakneck speed that so much of what we loathe about American society today — the very things that make our lives needlessly harder and more miserable — is a direct result of policy choices made by Republicans who couldn’t care less about ordinary people.

Mamdani actually cares about New Yorkers, and he’s proving it. Every day. A better future is possible…if we elect progressive Democrats willing to fight for it!

Let’s get one thing clear – this was a political decision by a conservative court. Had they legitimate concerns about the legality of these new maps, they could have put a stop to it before the referendum. Instead, they waited to see which side won and then brought the hammer down.

Once again, the judicial branch is being weaponized by conservatives to deprive millions of their political voice and give unfair advantages to the Republican Party. Once again, Democrats have to play by the rules while Republicans get to do whatever they want.

In Louisiana, Republicans have canceled primary elections after votes had already begun to be cast, throwing out 40,000 votes so that they can redraw their maps to deprive Democrats of a House seat.

In Florida, Republicans rammed through outrageous partisan gerrymanders in direct violation of the state’s constitution, which voters amended to ban partisan gerrymandering. The state Supreme Court is expected to approve the maps because rules don’t apply to Republicans.

Tennessee and Alabama waited less than a WEEK before redrawing their maps after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, making it clear just how important that legislation was in keeping the South from immediately reinstating Jim Crow.

In Utah, a gerrymander was rejected by the state Supreme Court - so Republicans immediately added two more seats to the Supreme Court to get the maps they wanted.

A slew of other red states are expected to follow suit.

When considering how Democrats respond to this, it is informative to think about what *Republicans* did when the courts shut down THEIR maps. Oh, they just ignored the courts and did whatever they wanted, because of course they did!

We cannot have a system where only one party abides by the rules. There is far too much at stake to constantly concede defeat out of a misplaced respect for norms and precedent when Republicans have no respect for anything except maintaining control of power.

Democrats need to go scorched earth on the Republican Party. All blue everything. There’s a lot we can do. By redrawing our own maps and making the Republican Party extinct in blue states, Democrats can add 22 more seats by 2028.

If we ever get control of both Congress and the Senate again, then we can pass a national gerrymander ban, add more seats to the Supreme Court to make sure it doesn’t get ruled unconstitutional, and put an end to this nonsense for good — but we have to bring the same cut-throat energy and drive to defending our democracy that Republicans do to dismantling it.

Politics is a zero-sum game, and there is far too much at stake to allow the Republican Party to cheat its way into a one-party state — which, we should remind you, was Donald Trump’s explicit goal when he kicked off the redistricting wars in the first place.

This isn’t just about one party winning. Every day Republicans are in power, people are dying, losing their livelihoods, paying higher prices, all because the Republicans in charge see them as expendable.

There is too much on the line to get caught up in decorum.

The spectacle shone a very bright and unwelcome light on House Speaker Mike Johnson and the entire Republican caucus, who’ve willingly embraced and overlooked the monster in their midst for years, showcasing once again that there’s no amount of duplicity or malfeasance they aren’t willing to tolerate to cling to power.

Notorious axe grinder Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina put her Republican colleague, Florida’s Cory Mills, through the proverbial meat grinder in one of the most brutal public takedowns you’ll likely ever witness in the House — especially one involving two members of the same party.

During Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hegseth’s appearance before the House Armed Services Committee, Mace ignored him entirely and instead decided to paste her Burn Book into the public record.

“I request unanimous consent to enter a number of documents into the record,“ Mace began.

“The first of which is a statement from Cory Mills, First Sergeant, stating his forms and accounts of his military service are falsified.

“The second document is a picture of Cory Mills wearing a Bronze Star from 2019, before he ever got a Bronze Star.”

OOF.

“The third document is a document that conveys a Bronze Star medal and his life-saving care to the wounded and according to the soldiers who were there, they said it never happened according to the men who were there.”

“I would like to enter to record a picture of Cory Mills, who says this is the second time he got blown up, but what he wouldn’t tell people [is] that the blood on the pant leg in this photo is the blood of Sergeant Ray. It is not Cory Mills’ blood.

“In the same series of photos he shares when he said he was quote ‘blown up,’ are images of a Humvee that exploded with severe damage — that is not his Humvee.”

Direct hit.

“This is a picture of Cory Mills with a purported Russian hooker in Afghanistan, which he, of course, denies.”

Then she dropped the real kicker:

“I would like to request unanimous consent to enter into the record of a restraining order against Cory Mills for dating violence.”

Why did she do all this?

“I just buried my father on Thursday, Mr. Chairman. My father died of shrapnel in his body. He had three tours of combat, two in Vietnam, one in 1965 during the coup d’état of the Dominican Republic,” said Mace.

“And I take stolen valor seriously because we have men and women in uniform that have given their lives. And an individual that steals the stories of dead soldiers or injured soldiers has no right to serve in this body, let alone on this committee.”

As a survivor of sexual assault and the daughter of a veteran, Mace is rightfully furious that Speaker Johnson’s caucus continues to protect Mills and refuses to expel him from the House.

Not only is Mills accused of having beaten his girlfriend, Sarah Raviani, so badly she suffered visible bruising, police overheard him telling her to lie to them about the assault.

Mills, 45, is also accused of threatening to release nude photographs of a DIFFERENT girlfriend, Lindsey Langston (19 years his junior), AND threatening to physically assault any of her future boyfriends.

A judge issued an order restricting Mills from going within 500 feet of Langston’s residence or making any mention of or reference to her on social media. The court found that Langston “has reasonable cause to believe she is in imminent danger of becoming the victim of another act of dating violence.”

On paper, Cory Mills is the antithesis of everything the Republican Party pinky-swears it stands for — family values, honorable military service, positive masculinity, and honesty.

But instead, this absolute slime-ball still has the support and endorsement of Johnson, who, in a sustained assault on our collective intelligence, pretends to have simply been too busy to read the news or consume a single piece of media since becoming speaker of the House.

“You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He’s been a faithful colleague here. I don’t know all the details. Let’s talk about things that are really serious,” Johnson said a few weeks ago.

It’s been said before, but it bears repeating: there is no bottom for these Republicans. There is no limit to their cynicism, their hypocrisy, their moral depravity, or their singular obsession with power.

Making them pay at the ballot box is the only recourse we are left with; America cannot tolerate being governed by these reprobates any longer.

To that end, meet Bale Dalton, the Democratic candidate gunning for Mills’ (winnable) seat! Dalton is a veteran who DIDN’T lie about his military service to get his hands on a medal, has never beaten any women, and also happened to serve as both deputy chief of staff and chief of staff at NASA.

This November, let’s put America back on track by replacing a wife-beating, valor-stealing cretin with a supremely qualified, bona fide patriot.

Well, we have some curt words of solace for the whiners: this is all their fault, and they deserve every bit of what’s coming to them.

Republicans are so openly shameless about their bad-faith hypocrisy — and have been for so long — that it came as no surprise when they immediately start crying crocodile tears when the results were announced in Virginia last night…but it was still astonishing to see so many so upset when it was Republicans who started this redistricting war in the first damn place.

Sowing, meet reaping!

The biggest whiner of all, of course, was President Donald Trump, who wrote:

“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA! All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before — And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory!”

But, of course, he wasn’t alone.

“This is power for power’s sake — plain and simple. Elections should be decided in a fair fight at the ballot box, not through shady political gerrymandering,” complained Virginia GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans, who is about to lose her seat.

“Virginia is under hostile occupation. We are ruled out of Fairfax County, and there’s nothing we can do about it!” wailed Republican elections analyst Christian Heiens, who was singing a VERY different tune when it was Republicans doing the nakedly partisan redrawing of maps in Texas. And in Missouri. And Ohio.

Spoiler alert: they did not hold all the cards.

Members of Congress got in on the complaint train, too. “I think the Virginia Supreme Court should take a long, hard look at it. It’s a pretty egregious map,” said Texas MAGA Rep. Chris Roy, somehow with a straight face, because this is all literally Texas’ fault.

When Trump put out the call for red-state governors to find him more House seats and expand what he assumed would be a permanent Republican majority, Texas was the first to answer the call.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared that his gerrymander “creates the one big, beautiful map that ensures fairer representation in the United States Congress for Texas,” and argued that he “redrew our congressional maps to better reflect Texans’ conservative voting preferences — and for no other reason.”

Texas Democrats know better. Texas Democratic Party chair Kendall Scudder said in response, “Greg Abbott and the Republicans have effectively surrendered Texas to Washington, DC. They love to boast about how ‘Texas Tough’ they are, but when Donald Trump made one call, they bent over backwards to prioritize his politics over Texans. Honestly, it’s pathetic.’”

If Republicans really cared so much about fair maps, then maybe they should have voted for them when House Democrats passed an anti-gerrymandering law during President Joe Biden’s administration.

But instead, not a single Republican voted for it, and the bill died in the Senate.

The gnashing of teeth is entirely predictable, of course. No one likes getting a taste of their own medicine. But the ferocity of their petulant response makes it clear Republicans didn’t expect Democrats to fight back. They thought we were broken and done for, that we would continue to go high while they frolicked in the mud.

They were wrong.

“This 10-1 map is about leveling the playing field for the country. We are not going to let anyone tilt the system without a response. Let’s be clear, this goes beyond Virginia. What started in Texas, didn’t stay in Texas. Virginia sent a message. If you try to rig the system, we fight back!” said Virginia State Senate President Louise Lucas, who has rightfully been taking the mother of all victory laps after the new maps passed.

So, if Republicans are mad, they can stay mad.

Donald Trump started this redistricting war — he was even dreaming of gerrymandering 100 more Republicans seats in order to permanently entrench one party rule. Nobody on our side loves gerrymandering, but the days of bringing a pen to a knife fight are officially over.

It’s Tax Week in the United States, that wonderful time of the year when tens of millions of Americans dutifully file annual returns and hand over a substantial portion of their incomes to Uncle Sam, who, at the unfortunate direction of the most corrupt administration in US history, will then spend it on things like a $70 million fuck-jet ordered by the recently-fired Kristi Noem, Secret Service Uber rides for Kash Patel’s 27-year-old girlfriend, incredibly expensive golf outings for the MAGA cult leader, and a catastrophic war of choice, just to name a few.

Right off the bat, Tax Day 2026 is a lot worse for Americans than in years past. After retaking the Senate in 2024, Republicans immediately killed the IRS’ Direct File program, which previously allowed Americans to file taxes for free instead of forcing them to go through predatory middlemen like TurboTax and H&R Block.

Republican Senator Mike Crapo lived up to his name and helped tank Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s last-ditch effort to save the Direct File program just yesterday. Crapo also happens to be a top recipient of donations from TurboTax’s corporate PAC. Oh, TurboTax’s parent company, Intuit, has also spent $53 million over the past 20 years lobbying Congress to help kill free tax filing programs like Direct Pay. Gee, wonder why?

Direct File would have saved American taxpayers $11 billion and delivered another $12 billion in tax credits to low-income families, but Trump and his MAGA ghouls thought it was more important to ensure companies like TurboTax and H&R Block could continue gouging the American people in order to fulfill a legal obligation. Thanks to their efforts, Americans will fork over another $23 billion just to file their taxes this year.

But let’s get down to the meat and potatoes of it. Did Americans receive a bigger tax return from Trump’s Big Awful Bill? Technically, yes. The IRS reports that the average refund this year is $3,462, up 11%, or around $350, from 2025. A far cry from the *thousands* that Trump promised the bill would deliver, mind you.

“Tax Refunds this year, because of ‘THE GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL,’ are substantially greater than ever before… In some cases, estimates are that over 20% will be returned to the Taxpayer. So, when you get your Tax Refund, think about what a wonderful President you have!” Trump wrote on Truth Social in February. Complete nonsense.

Despite the increased average return, taxes have actually *increased* for everyone by about $900 — except for the top 5% of earners — thanks to Trump’s tariffs and the Republican Party’s refusal to renew the Expanded Premium Tax Credit, which helped millions of Americans pay for health insurance in years past.

Good thing the Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s tariffs were illegal! We should all expect sizable tariff refunds any day now, right?

Bzzt! Wrongo! COMPANIES will eventually receive approximately $166 BILLION in tariff refunds; the consumers who paid higher prices on everything from clothing to electronics to food to ensure monocled fat cats didn’t miss their precious quarterly profit projections will be getting jack-squat. And if you think multi-billion-dollar corporations will lower future prices in response to the forthcoming tariff refunds, then we would like to discuss an exciting new opportunity on a bridge for sale.

Congratulations, America! We *collectively, on average* are set to pocket three hundred and fifty bucks. And what shall spend this windfall on?

Why, paying down our debts, of course! Over one-third of Americans plan to use their returns to chip away at debt, according to a Bank of America Global Research survey. Just 13% of recipients say they will put their returns in savings. The rest of us will probably be using the money to pay for gas, groceries, or any of the other daily necessities that have skyrocketed in price thanks to Trump’s idiotic tariff crusade.

While we plebs indulge in the extra scraps our modest returns afford us, the wealthiest among us will be enjoying SUBSTANTIALLY more.

At least 88 major corporations paid $0 (!!!!!) in federal income taxes last year. Corporations paid $65 BILLION less in taxes in 2025 than they did the year before. Michael Ettlinger at the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy spelled out the disparity for Common Dreams, noting, “The highest-income 20% get a $380 billion tax cut, with $117 billion going to the richest 1% alone.”

So just to reiterate.

We “get” $350 each.

They get $380,000,000,000.

Thankfully, it appears that more and more Americans aren’t being fooled by the Trump administration’s flowery lies and incessant gaslighting about how great things actually are for working families.

A recent Fox News poll — yes, Fox News! — found 64% of voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of taxes, an 11-point increase from the same survey last year. A new Gallup poll shows that six in ten Americans feel they pay too much in taxes. Pew’s polling shows that “six-in-ten adults now say the feeling that some wealthy people (61%) and corporations (60%) don’t pay their fair share bothers them a lot.”

When asked about this disgruntlement, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — whose current net worth is hovering around $600 million — said, “Look in their heart of hearts. They feel good. I’m not sure what they’re telling the survey people.”

Uh, they’re telling the survey people that they DON’T feel good, Scott! Most Americans feel like they’re paying too much in taxes while the rich most certainly are not, and the taxes that we DO pay seem to be funding a LOT of weekend golf getaways for Donald!

Infuriating, to be sure. But let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture. Let’s turn our collective anger into big wins for Democrats and progressives in November and send people to Washington who will take decisive action to rein in the oligarchy, pass a progressive tax code that makes the wealthy finally pay their fair share, and stop Corporate America from draining our nation dry.

What Trump and his allies are trying to undo is not just a long-settled principle of law, but one of the clearest democratic promises this country has ever made — that America would no longer be a place where caste is inherited and belonging is reserved for the privileged few.

To understand the modern assault on birthright citizenship, we have to go back to one of its most heinous expressions — the Dred Scott case, when the Supreme Court declared that Black people, even if free, could never be citizens of the United States. It was a grotesque ruling, but also a revealing one. It laid bare an insidious impulse at the heart of America: to extract labor and obedience from certain people while denying them full membership in the nation they were forced to build. The Civil War and Reconstruction were supposed to upend that logic. In 1866, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act to establish birthright citizenship and guarantee equal rights, rejecting the idea that America should remain a racial hierarchy.

The 14th Amendment followed to enshrine that right in the Constitution itself, making clear that birth on American soil was not something states, demagogues, or white nationalists could simply wish away. It explicitly states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

Unfortunately, racism is not so easily defeated. By the time United States v. Wong Kim Ark reached the Supreme Court in 1898, anti-Chinese sentiment had become one of the country’s dominant political forces. Yet the Court still reaffirmed a simple truth: that a child born here is a citizen, even if their parents are not. The principle was broader than any one community and bigger than the prejudices of the moment.

That is not the story of America that Trump wants to tell. Instead, his legal team’s case hinges on the amendment’s phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” They claim that children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants or temporary visa holders are not truly covered by the amendment’s guarantee, because their parents supposedly lack some abstract allegiance to the United States.

This argument is racism laundered as legalese. And that’s not merely conjecture. In a desperate attempt to manufacture doubt over birthright citizenship, Trump’s lawyers cited the views of a Confederate officer who argued against voting rights for Black Americans, as well as two 19th-century lawyers who argued against Chinese birthright citizenship on the grounds that Chinese immigrants were not “civilized.” That is not serious constitutional reasoning. The point of those arguments, then as now, was to cast people of color as alien, inferior, and outside the ideal image of America.

What makes this fight so dangerous is not only the legal precedent it threatens, but the society it imagines on the other side. Birthright citizenship provides certainty. It tells children born here that they belong here — that their future in this country isn’t in jeopardy.

Undo that certainty, and what replaces it is confusion by design: a growing class of people born on American soil but pushed into legal limbo, denied the full security of citizenship, and made newly vulnerable to discrimination, exclusion, and political scapegoating. Even the practical stakes are enormous. If Trump gets his way, it could affect roughly 250,000 births each year. It’s no coincidence that the harm will fall disproportionately on Latino and Asian communities.

That’s the point. Birthright citizenship makes a more multiracial America harder to deny. That has consequences far beyond immigration. It means more children of immigrant families growing up with a full sense of acceptance, more communities able to build power across generations, and a future electorate that looks less and less like the white America the right is desperate to preserve. This is a fight over whether the children of the “wrong” people will be allowed to become full participants in the nation’s civic life.

Birthright citizenship is one of the simplest and most radical promises America ever made: if you are born here, you’re a citizen. No conditions. This promise cannot be subject to whether politicians approve of your parentage, your skin color, or the language spoken in your home. Trump’s attack on that promise is an attempt to drag the country back toward a shamefully racist past. But there’s a better story of America we can tell — one forged by generations who forced this country to widen its definition of “We the People.” The question now is whether we mean to keep faith with that promise, or let racist politicians decide whose children belong.

None of this had to happen. This disorder is being engineered by the Right, all in accordance with Project 2025. Trump has held TSA workers hostage to unrelated legislative demands, all while Republicans undermined their union and laid the groundwork to privatize airport security altogether. As always, Republicans are manufacturing misery with no regard for travelers’ safety or the dignity of the workers keeping the system afloat.

As of this writing, TSA workers have gone over 40 days without pay. The consequences are plain to see in airports across the country: more than 450 TSA officers have left the agency since the shutdown began, absentee rates at some major airports have climbed above 40%, and passengers are experiencing “the highest wait times in history,” per the TSA’s acting administrator.

This is no mere inconvenience, not when reporting shows some agents have resorted to selling blood or sleeping in their cars just to get by. And what makes this cruelty even more obscene is that Senate Republicans have blocked legislation to fund TSA at least nine times. Trump himself had ordered Republicans to hold off on any deal so Congress could prioritize passing the unrelated, anti-voter SAVE America Act. For a few brief hours, it looked as though the Senate had finally brokered a way out, passing a bipartisan bill to fund TSA and most of DHS while leaving out additional money for ICE and Border Patrol. But House Republicans immediately rejected the compromise, choosing instead to prolong the shutdown in a fit of posturing that puts political ego above the public’s welfare.

Trump, meanwhile, has tried to swoop in as the hero of a disaster he helped create, issuing a memorandum to pay TSA agents with previously allocated DHS funds—after the crisis had spiraled into record delays and mass attrition. But no emergency order was actually needed to access that money; he could have done this weeks ago. It may offer workers some temporary relief, assuming it reaches them quickly, but it does not undo the damage already inflicted — or change the fact that Republicans are still willing to hold airport security hostage to their broader immigration and political demands.

To add insult to injury, Trump spent the past week touting his “genius” idea of deploying ICE agents to airports to “help.” The result has been a series of infuriating scenes in which paid, armed officers stand idly by while trained workers drudge on without pay. And this is not the first time TSA employees have been sacrificed to Republican brinkmanship: during the previous 43-day shutdown, 1,110 officers resigned—a blow to staffing that this latest catastrophe is now deepening.

The fallout from the shutdown would be bad enough on its own. What makes this spectacle even uglier is that it is no accident, but the next stage of a plan Republicans have already spelled out in black and white. Project 2025 argues that the TSA is “ripe for reform” and declares that “the TSA workforce should be deunionized immediately,” as a stepping stone toward privatization. In March 2025, the Trump administration began enacting that agenda when DHS announced it was ending collective bargaining for roughly 50,000 TSA officers, stripping protections from the very workers now being forced to hold the system together through weeks without pay.

Later that month, Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) introduced the Abolish the TSA Act. This bill would dissolve the TSA and shift airport screening to a privatized model. The senators boasted that airports should “compete” to provide security. Republicans have been actively starving and destabilizing a vital American workforce. They have the nerve to call the TSA broken when they’re the ones taking a sledgehammer to it.

Republicans are playing a reckless game. Before September 11, there was no unified federal workforce to handle airport screening. TSA itself notes that prior to 9/11—when security was outsourced to private contractors—airports operated under far looser standards than exist today. That is the model Republicans now want to drag us back to: a fragmented, contractor-driven system falsely sold under the guise of “competition” and “efficiency.” And they are pushing this at precisely the wrong moment: the United States is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June, with millions expected to flood American airports. That kind of travel surge is exactly when a stable, fully staffed airport-security system matters most.

So this is not just another shutdown horror story, and it is not just another anti-union crusade. It is an insidious right-wing scam to break a public institution, brutalize the people who keep it running, force the public to suffer the consequences, and then point to the suffering as proof that privatization is the answer. Project 2025 was a warning; now we’re all watching that plan play out in real time. Trump and Republicans are once again sacrificing the public good on the altar of corporate greed, putting the livelihoods and the lives of everyday Americans at risk.

His position in the region is the culmination of a lifetime of handouts, from his dubious admission to Harvard to the marriage of convenience that brought him into Trump’s orbit. Now that same corruption and nepotism have poisoned America’s foreign policy, with deadly consequences.

When Kushner launched Affinity Partners in 2021, he peddled the move as a departure from Washington. But Affinity quickly became less an escape from politics and more of a way to cash in on it. About six months after Kushner left the White House, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund committed roughly $2 billion to the firm. In 2024, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund and Abu Dhabi-based Lunate added another $1.5 billion. By the end of that year, Affinity had grown to roughly $4.8 billion in assets, with the bulk of its capital coming from Gulf states that Kushner had dealt with during Trump’s first term while masquerading as a diplomat.

As the prospect of another Trump term loomed, Kushner continued to cast himself as a man of finance rather than government. He insisted that he had no interest in rejoining the White House. He swore his firm was so well-funded that he wouldn’t need to raise more money during the second Trump administration.

Those assurances quickly fell apart, exposed as just another set of brazen lies emblematic of Trump family corruption. In recent months, Kushner has thrust himself back into high-stakes Middle East diplomacy, including nuclear talks with Iran, even as reports indicate that Affinity is already laying the groundwork for a second fund worth roughly $5 billion. Now, with the war underway, Trump is claiming Kushner helped sell him on the dangerously false belief that Iran was planning an imminent attack on the United States, which has since been flatly contradicted by U.S. intelligence. Local experts in the region are openly asking what, exactly, billions to Affinity bought the paying nations, as Iran launches strikes against the very states Kushner treated as cash cows.

This rank corruption is made all the more galling by the streak of entitlement that runs through it. Kushner has no real qualifications for any of these roles beyond nepotism, yet he continues to move through the region as though access and influence were his birthright. Why wouldn’t he? The defining theme of Kushner’s life is doors opening for him. When Kushner applied to Harvard, his acceptance came on the heels of a $2.5 million donation from his father, Charles Kushner.

When Charles was sent to prison in 2005 on charges of tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions, and witness retaliation, Jared stepped into a family real estate empire already built for him. The following year, he bought the New York Observer—a vanity acquisition to help him expand his influence. Time and again, wealth and privilege have paved his way.

With his marriage to Ivanka, Kushner’s proximity to Trump became a credential all its own. Two real estate dynasties merged, united by a shared creed in which inheritance is mistaken for intelligence. Once he was officially in the Trump fold, Kushner was installed in the White House and handed an enormous portfolio, including Middle East affairs, despite lacking any obvious expertise for the job.

Even his security clearance became a case of nepotism triumphing over the public interest, as the objections of career officials—citing concerns over foreign influence and conflicts of interest—went ignored. What makes his current standing so grotesque is that the same shortcuts that once bought him status in academia, business, and media now place him at the center of a war being paid for in other people’s blood.

That is what makes this more than a story about one pampered rich man failing upward. Kushner is a distillation of the Trump family ethos that connections matter more than merit, experience, or competence. He has spent his life converting inherited privilege into influence, and influence back into profit.

That pattern would be merely nauseating if the stakes were only confined to college admissions. But that same sick sense of entitlement has now brought him into the world of foreign policy and war, with millions of lives in the balance.

Kushner’s story is not just about nepotism. It’s about what happens when corrupt, unqualified elites are handed the reins of power while insulated from the human cost of the destruction they cause.

Nowhere is that clearer than in their attacks on Democratic candidates, which are reaching new lows in laziness and new highs in desperation.

The New York Times recently published a glowing profile of the Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s Eighth Congressional District, Paige Cognetti, highlighting her track record as an anti-corruption champion who has won re-election twice and is now setting her sights on Congress.

She’s challenging Rep. Rob Bresnahan, who ran on banning stock trades and then, in typical Republican fashion, immediately became one of the most prolific inside traders in Congress.

So how did Republicans respond? With an NRCC statement entitled “Even the New York Times Knows how Corrupt Cognetti Is.” Their proof of this supposed corruption?

They pulled the line “Ms. Cognetti knows government corruption.”

“Even the New York Times knows how corrupt pay-to-play Paige Cognetti is,” reads the press release.

This would be laughable on its own face vale – that statement is not in any way an indictment of Cognetti – but becomes truly pathetic once you read *the very next line* in the profile, which is: “She has, in fact, spent the past decade working various jobs to clean up her corner of Northeastern Pennsylvania, a region long known for public graft, grift and mismanagement.”

Cognetti’s campaign slogan was “Paige against the machine,” meaning the political corruption machine, which her opponent is solidly a member of. Scranton’s voters were so pleased with her performance as mayor that they re-elected her twice.

This is just straight-up embarrassing messaging from an NRCC that appears to have already thrown in the towel if this is all they can bother to come up with.

Cherry-picking phrases, misleading voters, and outright lies are all they have to fall back on. So it’s on us to articulate a vision of America that can break through all the noise, win back our majority, and start fixing the mess left by Trump and his bootlicking Republican enablers.

As if the situation weren’t painful enough, diesel prices are rising as well. In the past two weeks since the war began, the cost per gallon has increased by $1.05 — a 27.6% hike. Planters, tractors, irrigation systems—all the tools necessary to run a farm—operate on diesel. For farmers already scraping by, Trump’s war is not an abstract foreign-policy mess; it is a brutal new cost dumped in their laps at the worst possible moment.

Time and again, farmers are collateral damage under the Trump regime. During his first unnecessary trade war, retaliatory tariffs caused an estimated $13.2 billion in annualized losses to U.S. agricultural exports. Refusing to (ever) admit a mistake, Trump used the first year of his second term to reignite trade conflict with Canada, Mexico, and China, once again putting American farmers in the crossfire as those countries hit back with levies on products like wheat and soybeans. As Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, warned, “For the third straight year, farmers are losing money on almost every major crop planted.” Trump was then forced to throw billions in bailout money at farmers to soften the blow from a crisis he created.

Since returning to office, Trump has also frozen USDA grants, slashed more than $1 billion from programs that helped schools and food banks buy directly from local farms, and canceled a $3 billion climate-smart agriculture initiative because it didn’t “align with the priorities of the Trump administration.” These were concrete sources of revenue and stability for farmers. Now they’re gone—obliterated in the wake of destruction this administration has left from rural America to Iran.

Trump once had the nerve to proclaim, “We love our farmers, we’re going to take care of our farmers.” He has a funny way of showing it. His policies are proof that he doesn’t give a damn about them beyond their usefulness as political props. He has systematically sabotaged their ability to survive while pretending to stand in their corner. Now, his war with Iran is raising the basic cost of farming itself, exposing “America First” as the con job it is. Trump’s war on American farmers did not begin with Iran, but it is the latest reminder that the people who feed this country are always the ones he’s most willing to sacrifice.

Mike Johnson and the greater media’s response to it at large is just another reminder of how deeply anti-Islamic hate is hardwired into the national consciousness – and how the Republican Party has been taken over entirely by unrepentant bigots solidly somewhere between “Klansmen” and “Nazi” on the racism scale.

On March 9th, Rep. Andy Ogles tweeted, “Muslims don’t belong in American society. Pluarlism [sic] is a lie,” prompting furious backlash from everyone…except his own party.

This kind of white supremacist rhetoric stems directly from neo-Nazi ideas and conspiracy theories and is the language of ethnic cleansing at its core. It is the sort of rhetoric that eventually leads to genocide if allowed to be assimilated into mainstream discourse, tearing apart the bonds of community that so many Muslim-Americans share with their countrymen and dehumanizing them into the Other.

It didn’t always used to be like this; Rep. Steve King was stripped of his committee assignments and was ostracized for sharing similar sentiments just seven years ago. But in today’s Republican Party, this kind of talk is not only tolerated and shared by many members of the GOP caucus, but their leader will even *defend* it by invoking white supremacist conspiracy theories.

Olivia Beavers of the Wall Street Journal challenged Speaker Mike Johnson on Ogles’ repulsive comments, and he responded by going on a nonsensical tirade about “sharia law.”

“Look, there’s a lot of energy in the country and a lot of popular sentiment that the demand to impose Sharia law in America is a serious problem. That’s what animates this. ah that’s the language that people use. It’s different language than I would use. But I think that’s a serious issue.”

“But when you impose, when you seek to come to a country and not assimilate, but to impose Sharia law, Sharia law is in conflict with the U.S. Constitution, that is the conflict that people are talking about. It is not about people as Muslims. It’s about those who seek to impose a different belief system that is in direct conflict with the Constitution. That’s where I think that comes from.”

This is complete and utter nonsense. The “sharia law” hysteria is entirely imaginary, a boogeyman concocted by racist right-wing media to terrify brain-rotted boomers and keep them glued to their televisions.

The only thing that’s in direct conflict with the Constitution is Andy Ogles’ comments; the First Amendment guarantees religious freedom for all Americans, something that Republicans pretend they care very deeply about.

Muslims are and have always been a very important part of American society; we should remind Ogles and Johnson that the Founding Fathers respected the Prophet Muhammad and valued his legal ideas so much that they depicted him on the wall at the Supreme Court, in a well-intentioned if inadvertently offensive display of tolerance.

It just goes to show how alienated the anti-intellectual, anti-history, anti-human decency MAGA Republican Party is from what America actually is, what it was, what its founders believed, and what makes it actually great.

Unfortunately, there’s no cure for being a bigot; all we can do is make it clear that normal society will not tolerate this kind of racism and then kick every one of these assholes out of power once and for all.
