Julho é verão nos Estados Unidos e como moro em Chicago, que é uma cidade muito fria no inverno, essa época aqui é cheia e intenso. É como se tivéssemos que aproveitar cada segundo antes de encarar as temperaturas negativas e a vida hibernada.

Isso dito, julho foi um mês de muita coisa. Trabalhei e visitei amigos em NYC, tirei uma semana de férias no Brasil, recebi amigos em Chicago, fiz um passeio super legal de barco, assisti filmes que amei e livros que me prenderam tanto que terminei em um dia.

Aqui estão meus highlights:

Algo que me fez rir

THE INVITE!!!! Se você ainda não assistiu a esse filme, assista hoje. De verdade. E NO CINEMA. Fazia muito tempo que eu não ria tanto assim com um filme.

As risadas foram tantas que o cinema parecia um corpo só. Como se todo mundo se conhecesse e tivesse escolhido conscientemente assistir a esse filme junto. Não sei explicar, mas outras amigas que assistiram em outros países sentiram a mesma coisa.

Além da parte engraçada, esse filme aborda relacionamentos (casamentos) sob uma ótica muito relatable e ao meu ver pouco abordada ou nem sempre retratada de maneira fiel.

O filme é tão lindo quanto é engraçado, e vou assistir novamente no cinema com certeza.

THE DRAMA!!!

Foi um desses filmes que coloquei na minha lista e esqueci que existia. E aí no avião acabei dando de cara com ele e decidi assistir.

Praticamente me fundi com a cadeira do avião. Senti tanta raiva, frustração, desconforto, que fui encolhendo na cadeira sem perceber.

Pra mim, esse filme trouxe uma reflexão sobre o bem/mal/moral uma forma profunda, complexa, e desconfortável.

Não quero dar spoilers aqui mas se você assistiu e quer dividir sua opinião, adoraria escutá-la (lê-la) nos comentários.

Algo que eu amei

Livro: Bom Dia, Inverno

Os dois filmes acima facilmente entrariam aqui, mas queria adicionar uma categoria para esse livro:

Depois de assistir a uma entrevista da Tamara Klink sobre seu último livro Bom Dia, Inverno, decidi lê-lo. E terminei em um dia.

A Tamara tem um jeito de escrever muito bonito e envolvente. Dá vontade de grifar o livro todo.

Além da escrita, o conceito em si de invernar por 8 meses, longe de tudo que é corriqueiro e confortável, é algo que não passa muito por nossa cabeça. Pelo menos não pela minha.

Nesse contexto, a forma como ela descreve o silêncio e o barulho, os animais, seus pensamentos, suas relações – com a natureza, com a família e amigos que estão em casa, e com si mesma – seus medos, alegrias, é muito fascinante. Vale a pena ler.

Algo que vale a pena comprar

Fiz várias compras quando fui ao Brasil esse mês, mas sem dúvida entre minhas minhas preferidas estão as sandálias da Agui.

Comprei a Miau na cor preta e a Totem na cor vermelha, e além de lindas são confortáveis, e a qualidade é maravilhosa.

I've been really bad about writing, or doing anything else outside of my day to day life. I haven't created content at all, I have a backlog of interviews to edit for my YouTube (just 2), a list of guests to reach out to, and if I'm being honest absolutely no desire to do it.

It sounds depressive but it's actually quite the opposite. I'm so immersed in my life currently that I have no interest in stepping out of it, not even for a bit and not even for creating.

It's weird and part of me feels guilty, afraid that I'm sabotaging myself by letting my emotions rule instead of creating in spite of my lack of desire to do so.

But another part of me feels at extreme, unwavering peace.

For the first time I don't feel like I'm wasting time at all. I'm actually feeling not only ok but appreciative with the time of things. I don't feel rushed, behind, or late.

This is not a position of passiveness but of contentment. So I'm doing my best to enjoy it and leave the guilt aside.

That being said, sorry for not creating more and I hope you don't leave. Or if you do, I hope we can find our way back to each other when I have more to share.

What I'm Reading

A Hora da Estrela - Clarice Lispector

I've recently started to exchange letters with my mom, who lives in Brasil, and it's been such a beautiful way to feel close while living afar.

It's crazy to me that this feels so “different" and special, when in reality it used to be the only way for people to stay connected.

FaceTime is such a blessing and makes the distance feel a little shorter. But now that everything's so digital, seeing my mom's handwriting, the beautiful paper she intentionally picks, the photos from my childhood and whatever else she chooses to attach to the letters, makes me feel so much closer to her.

This month, along with a letter, she sent me Clarice Lispector's book A Hora da Estrela, which I'd been wanting to read for a long time and it feels embarrassing that it took me so long.

This has become one of my favorite books, and as expected I developed a hyperfixation on Clarice Lispector. The book is written in stream of consciousness and is a novel published in 1977, shortly before Clarice's death.

The story follows Macabéa, a poor young woman from Northeast Brazil, a migrant in Rio de Janeiro, invisible to the world. She is not heroic, she doesn’t rebel, she doesn’t make demands. She simply exists. Clarice chooses precisely this minimal existence to support a question that seems simple, but carries an internal fracture. What does it mean to be someone when everything conspires to make you nobody? (source).

What I'm Watching

I've been watching a lot of shows recently, a lot more than I've ever watched before. By the way if you have any recs, please comment below!

The last one I watched this month was Pluribus on Apple TV.

This show made me feel excited, uncomfortable, frustrated, and many other emotions at the same time. I have to say that the slower pace towards the end annoyed me, but aside from that it really made me think and feel, which I appreciate in a show.

The plot follows a cynical romance novelist, Carol Sturka, who is mysteriously immune to a global phenomenon called “The Joining”. An extraterrestrial RNA sequence leaks from a lab, transforming humanity into a permanently content hive-mind that desires to peacefully assimilate the few remaining immune individuals

But what is this show really about? Well, depending on who you ask, you will hear different answers. I like this article on Vulture that says:

The most topical metaphorical interpretation for Pluribus, the easiest and maybe buzziest answer to “What is this show even about?,” is that it’s a story about artificial intelligence, particularly the seductive temptation of stuffing an entire world’s creative output together into one polite, affirming, mindless voice that exists only to tell people what they want to hear.

From that framework, Pluribus is a show about the loss of creative purpose and a world where all ideas are endlessly regurgitated for a society that has become immune to novelty.

(…) Is something even “intelligent” if it has no new thoughts but is merely a collection of every previous human thought thrown into a blender?

Something that Made Me Think

I’m getting to an age where more friends are starting to get pregnant, some of them are already parents, and that it’s probably smart for me to start thinking whether I want to start a family in the near future or at least if I want to freeze my eggs.

As a woman who has never dreamed about being a mother and has currently no desire to become one, little by little I’ve been starting to consume more content around this discussion, knowing that at some point a decision will need to be made.

I enjoyed hearing Gabriela Prioli's experience with motherhood, being a successful and ambitious woman. She spoke openly about her struggles postpartum, the importance of a personal and professional support system, as well as coming to terms with her own imperfection: “I am not perfect, but this is the mother that I am”.

Back to my Clarice Lispector hyperfixation, I could watch this interview on repeat. Things that stayed on my mind:

1. Chico Buarque said Clarice had an “unsettling presence” and you can feel it in this interview. I say this in the best way possible – I love how she shows up as who she is and holds the totality of her presence. She answers what she wants to with sincerity, and unapologetically refuses to answer what she doesn’t want to. She's selective with her words, has no shame in saying she's tired, and doesn't nod or smile to make the other person feel comfortable.

2. Even though she's one of the most important Brazilian writers of all time, she doesn't see herself as a professional: “I’m not a professional, I only write when I want to. I’m an amateur and insist in continuing to be one. The professional needs to have commitment with themselves or with others to write. I insist in not being a professional in order to keep my freedom”.

3. She also talked about having periods of creating and periods of hiatus. These two ideas feel counterintuitive with the way that we operate at this day and age – in a world where productivity is all that matters, any sort of hiatus mean a setback. While I do believe that “creating only when you want to” and still making a living might be in part a luxury of the extremely talented and intuitive, I believe some of the most creative work arise from these moments.

Last but not least, I’ve always been intrigued and admired by sailor and writer Tamara Klink. This interview was after launching her new book Bom dia, inverno (Good Morning, Winter), about her experience as the first woman on record to overwinter alone in the Arctic.

For eight months, Tamara lived alone on a small sailboat trapped in the frozen waters of the Greenlandic Arctic.

What happens when we are alone, with no one to smile at? When we spend long days without seeing the sun? When we are the living beings least suited to survive in our surroundings?

In this interview she shared some of her memories and thoughts during this experience, which really makes you think about what really matters. It's also inspiring to simply see the world that exists of our bubbles.

Products I'm loving

I'm on a mission this year to have a more hydrating skin. But I’m lazy and hate moisturizing my body, so I'm trying to figure out a routine that is easy and effective.

I'm still trying different products (I've mentioned a few in previous newsletters), but a routine that I'm really enjoying right now is:

1. Morrocanoil Shower Gel: not only is it hydrating but it's the same scent as their hair oil (!!!) which I LOVE. This scent makes me happy.

2. Natura Shower Oil: on the other hand, I don't really love the scent of this one, so I don't think I'll be repurchasing it. But this was my first time trying a shower oil and I do think it makes a huge difference. I'll 100% continue to incorporate it into my routine.

3. Nivea Cocoa Butter moisturizer: I try all kinds of moisturizers and always go back to Nivea. I like the scent and texture of this one, it doesn't leave my skin sticky afterwards.

4. Palmer's Cocoa Butter (manteiga de cacau): it's really common to use Cacau Butter as a lip balm Brasil, but I had never bought the “paste". I've been applying this on my feet, legs, and cuticles before bed and it's been amazing.

What I'm eating

Mott St is a restaurant I often forget about in Chicago, but I'm always happy when I remember it exists. This month we had dinner there with a friend that was visiting and I was reminded of how amazing their Miso Mushroom is.

Dimi Dimi – we finally tried Dimi Dimi!! We went there for lunch and it was delicious, their pizza is now on my top 3 in Chicago. The service was ok, but the food was really good.

This month I also discovered two of my new favorite ice creams in Chicago. One was the Brown Butter ice cream at Gilt Bar, and the other was the Ube ice cream from Milky MIlky at Bayan Ko Diner. Insanely good.

Other than that, it's been a great month with friends, getting ready for trips coming up, and of course: the World Cup! To wrap up, here's a photo of my dog Gaston with his little Brazilian outfit.

This was a slow month for me on one hand and very busy on another. I'm ramping up in my new job, had to pull a tooth, and am potting training my dog. In the middle of all that, I found myself wanting to do something I haven't done in a long time: rest!!! Be offline. Allow myself to be in a bubble, without the need of using each hour of the day to learn something new or be productive.

Something that made me happy

We took my dog to the beach for the first time this past weekend and I thought you deserved to see a video of him swimming in his shark vest:

Also, I organized my closet and my laundry room – I won't even post pictures because I'm not an organization master and it's not anything crazy, but it has given me SO MUCH peace of mind. It's insane how keeping our spaces clean and organized can completely change our mood.

Something that made me think

Between the guilt and the pleasure of not being productive, I spent a lot of time thinking about our relationship with play and rest. I'll elaborate more at a different time. For the time being, here's a post I liked:

What I’m watching

I swapped “what I'm reading” for “what I'm watching” this month because I'm still reading Jung's Modern Man in Search of a Soul.

This month for the first time I think ever, I've watched 5 different shows at the same time: The Boys, Your Friends & Neighbors, Euphoria, TV Studio, Heated Rivalry (!!!).

I know I was extremely late to Heated Rivalry and trust me I regret I was.

I thought I wouldn't fall for the hype but now here I am counting the days for season 2. I'm addicted.

What im eating

This was a month full of Brazilian food that made me feel like home. This is actually another thing that I thought a lot about this month – how not only food, but the rituals we have around food, are such a part of who we are and can make us feel like home.

I made picanha and homemade pão de queijo com linguiça, finally went to Sinhá, and went over to a friend's house to eat her aunt's homemade feijoada.

This month I also was on a mission to get great coffee beans – not that those are hard to find, but I had two misses recently and went back to Metric. I also tried the Minor Figures Barista Oat Milk for the first time (I used to only buy Oatly Barista) and really liked it for iced lattes.

I have a Breville Barista Express espresso machine and usually swap between Pergamino, Metric, Sawada, and Blue Bottle beans. But I'm always looking for new ones, so if you have reliable recs please comment below. :)

Last but not least, I tried Tamu Sushi here in Chicago and their hand rolls are amazing. I'll definitely come back.

Products worth buying

I'm also late to this game, but I finally tried the Beauty of Joseon - Relief Sun Aqua-fresh sunscreen and it really is what everyone says it is. Really hydrating, non sticky, and lightweight.

I‘m also on a mission to keep my skin hydrated with as little effort as possible, since I hate having to moisturize all the time. So I’ve been swapping out body wash for shower oils, and while they’re not miracle workers on their own, I do think they make a difference. I’ve tried a few brands and this one from Bioderma has been my favorite so far, the scent is great and fresh.

I’m still exploring other options, so if you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!

“One day I won't be able to do this, but that day is not today.”

Esse fim de semana me fez pensar bastante sobre a impermanência da vida.

Soa triste, mas na verdade é o oposto. Vivi momentos felizes e cheios, tão cheios que me colocaram em um outro nível de consciência – um em que é possível acessar não só o presente, mas experienciar emocionalmente o passado também.

Ao descer desse lugar fiquei com a lembrança dolorida, mas importante, de que nada é para sempre. E que o momento feliz de hoje já será a saudade de amanhã.

É engraçado como a impermanência da vida é uma das únicas certezas que temos, e ainda assim vivemos como se o hoje fosse estático e eterno.

E aí, de vez em quando…bem de vez em quando, às vezes quando morre alguém, às vezes quando alguém recebe um diagnóstico, ou quando existe a possibilidade de um, a reação é coletiva:

“É preciso aproveitar o momento”,

“Diga ‘eu te amo’ ”,

“Se você está pensando em alguém, ligue”.

Mas aí, um dia depois, talvez dois, e para os sortudos uma semana, voltamos ao modo automático da vida.

Esse modo é útil, não me entenda mal. Mas o contraste entre o que é e o que um dia deixará de ser é necessário para viver uma vida bem vivida.

O contraste na vida, de maneira geral, é necessário. Contraste dá perspectiva, e a perspectiva limpa a visão viciada através da qual enxergamos nossa existência.

Como podemos, então, lembrar ativamente dessa certeza, sem precisar de um evento transformador e avassalador como a morte, a doença, ou um sofrimento extremo?

A verdade é que eu não sei.

Tenho tatuado no meu corpo memento mori para me lembrar da nossa mortalidade (na verdade é memento vivere, foi nos meus 20 e poucos anos, talvez 19, em que eu só queria uma tatuagem cool e acabei pegando o que achei primeiro no Google).

Em muitas das minhas orações pela manhã, tento me lembrar em voz alta do meu compromisso de “honrar a vida. Honrar significa vivê-la por completo em minhas condições atuais, sabendo que tudo pode mudar e que todo dia pode ser o último”.

Mas com frequência acabo me esquecendo.

No fim das contas, honrar nossa mortalidade e portanto a vida não é uma prática apenas de uma tatuagem ou palavras, mas de vivência.

Tenho uma amiga que já correu quase todas as maratonas majors, e que me ajudou muito durante o meu processo de correr a de Chicago no ano passado.

Sempre que ela participa de alguma prova ou simplesmente uma corrida desafiadora, ela usa como motivação a seguinte lembrança:

Nosso corpo não terá essa mesma disposição para sempre, e é impossível saber se acordaremos com saúde amanhã. Por isso hoje, que tenho saúde e disposição, ao correr eu honro a vida. Nosso estado atual é um privilégio que nunca deve ser esquecido, e sempre celebrado.

E aí é que começo a questionar toda nossa ideia de propósito.

Passamos tanto tempo pensando em propósito como algo grandioso para justificar nossa existência, mas a perspectiva que a mortalidade dá me faz pensar que nosso propósito talvez seja ter a capacidade de reconhecer o hoje e viver a grandeza das coisas pequenas.

Poder correr, dividir momentos com pessoas amadas, acordar com saúde, dormir bem, comer, sentir o gosto da comida, explorar um lugar novo, explorar os lugares de sempre… quando a gente abre os olhos, a lista é longa.

Então, este é o seu lembrete diário que sim:

“É preciso aproveitar o momento”,

Last week I shared the daily digest website I created through AI tool Lovable, that updates every morning with a content curation tailored to my interests and top news.

As someone who enjoys reading but feels overwhelmed with the amount of content there is online, and sometimes lost regarding where to find the content I’ll actually like, this has been really great.

(If you like this topic, I also published a newsletter in December about how I used Claude to help me with content curation).

Some of you asked here and on socials for the prompt I used, so here's the step by step:

(I first created a draft, then pasted in on Claude and explained what it was for + asked to refine it for the best output – I recommend doing that as you create the prompt to your taste).

Step by step and the prompt I used

1. Go to lovable.dev and create an account

2. Get a free NewsAPI key at newsapi.org before you start — Lovable will ask for it when setting up the .env file

3. Work with Claude to refine your prompt

4. Paste your Prompt on Lovable. This is the one I used:

   
   Build me a fully functional daily digest web app. This must be a working application that:

   1. Fetches real, live content every day. Use a news API (such as NewsAPI.org or The Guardian API) for news sections, and a quotes API (such as api.quotable.io or ZenQuotes) for the quotes section. For essay/long-form content sections, pull from RSS feeds of the specific sources listed below. All content must be dynamic — nothing hardcoded.

   2. Refreshes automatically every 24 hours. The app should cache the day’s content on first load (so it doesn’t re-fetch on every page visit) and invalidate that cache at midnight to pull fresh content the next morning. Use a timestamp-based cache stored in localStorage.

My “daily digest” website created with AI

I spend a good amount of time trying to build efficient systems that help me 1) find content I like, 2) access that content daily, 3) make it easy to digest.

I even wrote this article last year about how to find good content, sharing a bit of my process.

This month, I saw a creator on TikTok showing how she used AI tool Lovable to create a “daily digest” website and decided to give it a try.

I’ve had it for 4 days only but I’ve been LOVING it so far (no pun intended). I’ve made some adjustments and will probably make more as I go. But overall I'm happy with the content selection and how easy it was to build/edit.

Finding out about Brazilian furniture store Sossego

It never ceases to amaze me how talented Brazilians are and the quality of our work. I was able to go to Sossego’s showroom in NYC this month and now I’m determined to work my ass off to afford the Pitu Chair, aka the most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat on.

Sossego’s furniture is hand assembled and finished by craftsmen in Southern Brazil and some of its clients include NVIDIA and Southall Farm & Inn. You can check out their Instagram here.

Is not believing in God causing more harm than good?

As someone who thinks that our separation from the divine (read: not the same as religion!!) does tend to cause more harm than good (I sort of explained this here), the following roundtable was really thought provoking:

Há uma quantidade de conteúdos que ditam explicitamente o que um relacionamento deveria ser ou não ser, e tem ainda os que implicitamente espalham a ideia de uma união ideal baseada em um recorte muitas vezes encenado de parceria.

Não são mais os “filmes da Disney” que nos fazem desenhar a ideia perfeita de príncipe encantado. São as pessoas normais, como eu e você.

Meio a esse mar de informação, não se surpreenda se do nada você começar a questionar cada movimento ou falta de movimento do seu parceiro.

Você, que nem gostava de flores, agora se chateia porque não recebeu rosas do seu namorado em uma terça-feira qualquer. Se tiveram uma discussão, é capaz de você questionar sua vida inteira porque, afinal de contas, “relacionamento deveria ser leve”, e talvez isso não seja leve.

Tudo se tornou tóxico, sinônimo de narcisimo, ou de falta de dedicação.

Me lembro quando a Michele Obama, casada com Barack Obama há 34 anos, disse a famosa frase que levou a internet, viciada na ideia vazia de "tudo é toxico” à loucura":

Ano que vem completo 8 anos de relacionamento com meu marido, e na minha própria jornada aprendi que relacionamento é muito diferente do que eu imaginava quando mais nova.

Posso passar horas elaborando o que penso sobre esse assunto, mas quero focar em um post que vi semana passada de uma terapeuta chamada Nadia Addesi, que resume bem o que acredito.

Aqui está o post original, e abaixo a tradução.

1. “Se ele quisesse, ele faria”

Nem sempre. As pessoas não sabem automaticamente o que importa para você só porque elas te amam.

Expectativas que não são comunicadas viram ressentimento.

A questão real não é se elas conseguem adivinharam corretamente. É se eles se importam suficiente para cumprir com suas necessidades, uma vez que você as deixou claras.

2. "Você não deveria ter que mudar por ninguém”

Você não deveria mudar sua identidade central, mas você terá que encarar a realidade de precisar trabalhar nos seus próprios traços e hábitos não saudáveis que vão aparecer na relação.

Um dos padrões mais claros que vejo são pessoas esperando crescimento de seus parceiros enquanto agem como se seus próprios padrões não saudáveis devessem ser aceitos como parte de quem são.

Um relacionamento não pode crescer a não ser que ambas as partes estejam dispostas a crescer também.

3. “Uma relação saudável nunca será difícil"

Uma relação saudável SERÁ difícil. Quanto mais próximos vocês ficam, mais suas diferenças, feridas, medos, e padrões aparecem na superfície.

Acho que muitas pessoas foram ensinadas a tratar a dificuldade como prova de que algo está errado, quando normalmente é apenas o que acontece quando duas pessoas estão tentando construir uma vida juntos.

Algumas temporadas vão pedir mais de você. E haverá decisões que te desafiarão.

4. "Nunca se acomode”

Essa soa empoderadora, mas foi distorcida em sempre buscar por algo melhor.

Sim, critérios importam, mas eu vejo pessoas deixarem passar amores saudáveis porque a internet ensinou que se uma relação não é perfeita, sem esforço, e tudo que eles imaginaram, é sinal de que estão se acomodando.

Existe uma diferença entre se acomodar e aceitar que qualquer relacionamento virá com falhas e duas pessoas imperfeitas.

5. “Ele(a) deveria ser o seu tudo”

Depositar tanto peso em uma única pessoa é uma receita para a codependência.

Já vi o quão rapidamente isso se transforma na perda de si mesmo dentro do relacionamento.

Seu parceiro deve ser uma fonte significativa de amor e conexão, e não o seu sistema de apoio inteiro.

Relacionamentos saudáveis ​​coexistem com amizades, comunidade e sua própria identidade individual.

6. “Se for para ser, será”

O destino não é um indicador de um relacionamento saudável. Relacionamentos saudáveis ​​se sustentam no trabalho, na comunicação, na maturidade emocional e na disposição de duas pessoas em reparar a relação. Muitos relacionamentos não fracassam porque o amor não era real; eles fracassam porque o amor, por si só, não foi suficiente.

A primeira vez que fiz terapia foi aos 15 anos, por um curto período de tempo. Depois disso, tenho feito on and off pelos últimos 7 anos, com três profissionais diferentes, apenas o último sendo em inglês.

Assim como muita gente que reage quando falo sobre isso, eu achava que fazer terapia em um idioma que não fosse português não seria produtivo. Afinal de contas, as experiências da minha infância que formaram meu eu adulto aconteceram em português.

Será possível conectar com as partes mais profundas de quem eu sou, em um idioma que não contribuiu para a minha formação?

Até que um dia, rolando no TikTok ou no Instagram, vi a Bri dividindo sua experiência positiva sobre fazer terapia em seu segundo idioma – nesse caso, em português.

Na época, eu já estava morando nos Estados Unidos, e incomodada com algumas questões que não conseguia elaborar muito bem.

Por um lado, não me sentia ainda completamente eu nesse país e idioma, e não conseguia articular o porquê (tentei fazê-lo nesse texto: The Feeling of Being a Foreigner).

Por outro, estava começando a planejar meu projeto, The Adults’ Table, em que converso com pessoas diferentes sobre a vida em uma perspectiva honesta e adulta.

Eu sabia que queria construi-lo em inglês, mas sentia uma insegurança profunda, apesar da minha fluidez no idioma.

Além de tudo isso, o relacionamento mais importante da minha vida – com o meu marido – foi construído inteiramente em inglês pelos últimos 7 anos. E minha vida profissional e tudo que vem com ela, também se desenrolava nesse idioma.

Existia, eu pensei, pedaços da minha vida presente e conteúdo emocional suficiente em um idioma que não é o meu nativo.

Comecei então a entreter a ideia.

Será que se eu fizesse terapia em inglês, me sentiria mais parte de onde eu moro? Me encontraria mais facilmente nas nuâncias culturais? Teria mais coragem e segurança para desenvolver meu projeto?

Tomada a decisão de considerar explorar esse caminho, comecei a buscar profissionais. A verdade é que comparado ao Brasil, eu sinto que tudo que é psicologia ou espiritualidade nos EUA é superficial.

Sem ter ninguém para quem pedir indicação, recorri ao método mais acessível: a internet.

Depois de muito pensar, defini o perfil de terapeuta que eu queria: homem, com muita experiência (60+), e da linha junguiana.

Na minha busca, encontrei um terapeuta no YouTube que me pareceu interessante. Deixei para lá.

Semanas depois, fiz uma busca no Google, e encontrei o mesmo homem de cara. Deixei para lá.

Na terceira vez, semanas depois, busquei em um diretório dentro de um site, e ele foi a primeira pessoa que apareceu.

Como boa estudante de Jung que acredita em sincronicidade, decidi finalmente marcar.

Sem saber se eu conseguiria sustentar 1h de sessão em outro idioma, ou se a experiência dele sendo americano seria muito diferente da minha a ponto de não conseguirmos “mesma língua” além do idioma, fui para a minha consulta.

Todo o formato era diferente: não só nunca tinha feito terapia em inglês, mas nunca tinha feito terapia com um homem. Nem com ninguém com mais de 40 anos. E nem presencial.

Portanto, atribuo a experiência que vou narrar não só à língua, mas a todos esses fatores.

A conexão com o passado e as emoções

Sou uma pessoa que normalmente processa as emoções de maneira mental.

Tenho facilidade em elaborar a razão por trás de um sentimento, de racionalizar uma experiência emocional, e reconhecer suas diferentes camadas.

Também sou uma pessoa que processa emoções majoritariamente através da raiva. É difícil algo me causar tristeza instantaneamente.

Nos meus anos de terapia antes dessa, havia chorado em sessão não mais que 3 vezes, e apenas em situações extremas.

Na minha terapia em inglês, eu choro praticamente toda semana. Isso pode soar besta, mas para mim é um marco difícil de acreditar.

Contrário ao que eu pensava sobre a desconexão emocional com outra língua, eu nunca havia mergulhado tanto em minhas emoções como dessa vez.

Vou ficar devendo elaborar com mais detalhes o porquê disso, ou psicologicamente falando como o idioma interfere ou não na criação das memórias e tudo mais que você pode se questionar quando cogita explorar esse caminho também.

Tudo que eu tenho para relatar é minha experiência.

Em inglês, meu terapeuta foi capaz de descrever sentimentos e sensações para os quais eu nunca havia encontrado palavras antes, ou que nem sequer reconhecia como experiência individual.

Sobre The Adults’ Table, acredito que o fato de ter começado e feito religiosamente a cada semana contribuiu mais para o desenvolvimento da minha segurança do que a terapia em si. Ainda assim, falar sobre ele nesse contexto tem me ajudado com o sentimento de socializa-lo em outra cultura.

Em geral, toda essa experiência – a língua, o presencial, o perfil de terapeuta – tem sido uma experiência surpreendente e transformadora.

Percebi que a capacidade de sentir, de reparar em si e mergulhar nas próprias emoções transcende qualquer idioma: é uma linguagem da alma.

“I think, therefore I am.”

For the past three centuries, our ability to think has been treated as the most important feature of our existence, which differentiates our species and determines our value.

So what happens once AGI (as vague as this term is) is a reality and something is finally able to “outsmart” humans?

What will differentiate us, what skills will we start to value, and how will that affect our perception of meaning?

Taste, creativity, resilience, agency, willfulness… yes, sure. All of that is important.

But I think the answer is deeper than that, and I think women can help us find it.

Logos and Eros

Since the Enlightenment, reason is the supreme authority in Western civilization, which means that we venerate:

• Consciousness

• Logic

• Order

• Predictability

• Control

• Mind / Thinking

Anything that can’t be quantified, controlled, or rationally explained is considered archaic and less “real”:

• Unconsciousness

• Intuition

• Mysticism

• Wisdom

• Spirituality

• Body / Feeling

In Junguian psychology, the first “bucket” I described can be defined as the masculine* archetype, which is generally characterized by logos: logic, linear thinking, structure, assertiveness, and action.

On the other hand, the second “bucket” or the feminine* archetype, is characterized by eros: intuition, connection, holistic understanding, feeling.

(🚨 *Try not to roll your eyes at these terms!!! This has nothing to do with gender norms. Both men and women have access to these two energies).

In Carl Jung’s psychology, Logos and Eros are archetypal principles representing fundamental opposing forces within the human psyche. Their union is crucial for psychological wholeness and individuation, balancing objective thought with personal connection.

This duality, and the integration of opposites in general, is something ancient traditions have explored for centuries, using different languages and symbols: yin-yang, Shiva and Shakti, etc.

My point is this: while we tend to base our worth on the “first side” and reduce intelligence to our ability to think, there is an entirely different side that has been overlooked for centuries.

My suggestion is not that one should substitute the other. Rather, this AI era is a great opportunity to discuss and discover our wholeness again.

Chloé Zhao: Hamnet and the unity of the opposites

Hamnet director Chloé Zhao has been openly talking about the feminine/masculine archetypes and the union of opposites, in a vulnerable and very articulated way like I’ve personally never seen anyone else do in mainstream media.

The movie tells the story of Agnes (Anne) Hathaway – Shakespeare’s wife – and the death of their son, believed to have inspired Hamlet.

But the film is not just about grief and motherhood.

As Chloé Zhao said herself, it is about:

“The two opposing forces that exist inside of us and in nature: ying/yang, masculine/feminine, Shiva/Shakti, civilization/nature, whatever name you wanna give”.

In her words, these two characters can “hold the archetypal container of these two energies”, which in the end understand each other.

Other than through symbols and storytelling, Chloé Zhao alludes to these two sides continuously in interviews, touching on topics like the divine, intuition, wisdom, mysticism, and the inner world.

In this NYT interview (25:00) she reflects:

Rosalia’s LUX

The growing spiritual* hunger that Chloé Zhao mentioned was also reflected in Rosalia’s album LUX.

(🚨 *Again, DON’T ROLL YOUR EYES!! Do not interpret the words “divine” and “spirituality” as “religion”. What I’m talking about here is the actual experience of unity, a force that lives within us and in everything else – not the constitutionalization of that force or the idea of a man in the sky who is the sole holder of it).

The album explores lyrical themes of “feminine mystique, transformation, and spirituality,” with songs inspired by the lives of various female mystics, including Hildegard of Bingen and Rabia Al-Adawiya.

Recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, and featuring multiple arrangements from Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, Rosalia offers a human, spiritual, bodily experience through this album that connects us to something far beyond thought.

Through experiences like these your mind shuts off. You remember that you are much more than your ability to think. You feel. You become whole again.

Conclusion

As technology reshapes what defines us and challenges where we find meaning, we are presented with a great opportunity to rediscover our wholeness.

To move beyond intelligence as pure reason, and begin valuing intuition, mystery, vulnerability and the divine as forms of intelligence as well.

And as we expand our understanding of intelligence and recognize ourselves beyond just consciousness, we need leaders and storytellers who can articulate these deeper layers of existence.

What makes us human and differentiates us from AI is not just our “taste” or our “resilience”. It’s our wholeness.

Something that made me happy

CILLIAN MURPHY’S BBC 6 RADIO SHOW!!!

I don’t know if everyone was aware of this except me, but this was definitely my favorite find this month. The show is “a nocturnal playlist made to play after dark, with music from all corners of Cillian Murphy’s record collection”.

The songs are great, and I love Cillian’s comments in between songs (he records it from his basement btw which makes me love it even more).

The only downside is that I think the show is not fully available in the U.S. I was able to listen to a couple of episodes, but I run into an error when trying to listen to the other ones. If you’re outside of the UK and have figured out a way to listen, let me know!

In any case, you can find Spotify playlists with all the songs. It’s not the same as hearing his voice of course, but we’ll work with what we have (or as we say it in Brazil “quem não tem cão caça com gato” - “who doesn’t have a dog, hunts with a cat” lol).

Something that made me think

Since this year’s Oscars, I’ve watched probably a dozen interviews with Hamnet director Chloe Zhao.

She’s been talking a lot about the beauty of a midlife crisis, our fear of impermanence, the opposite forces that live within us, female mystique, and topics that every single person should learn more about in my opinion.

I wish every single one of my friends watched this interview. So good.

Something that made me laugh

I watched Ryan Gosling’s new movie “Project Hail Mary” this weekend and loved it. Beautiful, funny, exciting. This is exactly my type of humor so I loved it so much and already want to watch it again.

Besides, I go to the movies pretty often and I hadn’t seen a theater this packed in a long time. It felt good.

I was in San Diego earlier this month and finally had my first California Burrito ever, at The Taco Stand. Excuse the terrible picture, but it was hands down the best burrito I’ve ever had.

Still in San Diego, I had pastries from Wayfarer Bread & Pastry in La Jolla. I’m not someone who usually raves over pastries, but these were pretty good.

This month I also remembered NYT Cooking exists and made probably 6 of their recipes. All of them were 10/10 (I choose the ones with 5 stars), but this was my husband’s and my favorite:

Pick #1 KISS Press-on Nails

I hadn’t worn press-on nails in probably 15 years, but this month I wanted longer nails without having to sit through a 1+ hour appointment, so I found these KISS nails at Ulta and LOVED them.

My problem with fake nails is that I think they get gross after 1 week and I have this urge to aggressively remove them.

It as really hard to remove them then, so I do believe it does last for 2 weeks as advertised.

Pick #2: l’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara (Latte Brown)
If you’re my friend or follow me on social media you’re probably tired of me talking about this mascara, but I just repurchased it this month for the 3rd time so I have to talk about it again.

I used to hate mascaras because my lashes are more on the straight side and they weigh down easily. But someone recommended these to me and it’s the only thing I’ve been using since.

It gives my lashes the best shape I’ve ever had from any mascara, it stays put the whole day, and it doesn’t transfer to my under eye.

Pick #3: Amika Hair Oil

I’m trying to take better care of my hair this year, so I’ve been trying many different products lately.

I’m a big fan of Amika’s hair mask and their oil didn’t disappoint. It really is lightweight – I use two pumps in my hair and it does not weigh it down or make it sticky. I was using the Morrocanoil Treatment hair oil before which I also really liked, but this one is even lighter and smells really good.

Muitas das invenções de Leonardo nunca se materializaram em seu tempo, e não foi até mais tarde na vida que conseguiu exercer a desejada função de engenheiro.

Stewart Butterfield queria desenvolver um jogo online. O jogo, chamado Glitch, foi lançado em 2011, mas o número de usuários era pequeno e o modelo de negócio não funcionava.

Enquanto criavam o jogo (já era a segunda tentativa, por sinal), a equipe, que precisava se comunicar entre diferentes partes, acabou criando um sistema interno muito mais organizado que email.

(Mais um exemplo e o último, juro) Quando era jovem em Cork, Cillian Murphy tocava em uma banda chamada The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, que “quase deu certo”.

Esse foi seu primeiro sonho: ser músico. Na universidade (de direito, diga-se de passagem???), ele começou a se dedicar à atuação, e hoje tem um Oscar e todos os outros prêmios ”importantes” que você imaginar.

Histórias assim continuam e são muitas. E toda vez que eu escuto uma nova, entro em um pensamento longo, cansativo, mas ao meu ver importante, sobre:

Será que quando o assunto é carreira, no fim é aquilo em que somos bons, e não o que amamos, que importa?

Claro, acredito que todas essas pessoas têm amor e gosto pelos seus ofícios “secundários” que tornaram-se primários.

Mas entender a jornada de cada um, ainda que hoje pareça óbvio, escancara algumas interpretações provavelmente falhas de trabalho e autorrealização que aplicamos em nossas próprias vidas.

A falácia de trabalhar com o que se ama

Em um passado talvez não tão distante assim, trabalho era apenas fonte de sustento (e para muitas pessoas, esse ainda é o caso), ou parte do cumprimento de dever a uma ordem maior.

Mas em algum momento, começamos a operar com a mentalidade de que o trabalho deveria ser fonte de autorrealização.

O trabalho passou a ser não só instrumento de sobrevivência, mas o que nos dá identidade. Uma expressão do eu.

Essa é uma mudança significativa, que consequentemente atribui importância muitas vezes desproporcional ao que se tem como ofício.

Além de tudo, se pressupõe que o trabalho ideal, com potencial de levar à autorrealização, deve nascer de algo que se ama.

Parece que o trabalho só é bom se é a expressão de algo que amamos,

e não basta amar algo apenas por amar – é preciso exercer o que se ama como profissão.

Eu cresci com essa ideia, ou melhor, certeza. Mas, com o tempo e sem perceber, comecei a questioná-la.

Talvez porque fui trabalhar com algo que não era necessariamente minha paixão: tecnologia. E a minha real paixão de criança – entretenimento – continuou ocupando apenas esse lugar: paixão.

Na minha jornada em tecnologia, não-apaixonada, rendi um bom sentido da vida: me conheci, cresci, ganhei uma quantidade de dinheiro que me proporcionou regar o que eu amo e explorar a vida. Morei em três países diferentes, conheci o meu marido, e meus melhores amigos.

Fui entendendo assim que talvez a minha ideia de trabalho, ou da relação de trabalho, paixão, e autorrealização, estava equivocada. Ou pelo menos, um pouco distorcida.

A separação entre hobby, trabalho, carreira, e vocação

Até que um dia, vi a Elizabeth Gilbert, autora de Comer, Rezar, Amar, quem teve muitos trabalhos diferentes na vida além de escritora, comentar sobre a diferença entre hobby trabalho, carreira, e vocação:

Não precisamos amar um trabalho (importante: isso não é o mesmo que aturar um trabalho que odiamos). Uma carreira exige sim um gosto maior. Um hobby existe unicamente por diversão, você não precisa ser bom. E uma vocação é um chamado divino, que deve ser exercido independentemente de um dia tornar-se trabalho ou não.

Essa diferenciação deixa de projetar tanta expectativa em cima exclusivamente do trabalho, e organiza de maneira mais coerente nossos possíveis interesses, responsabilidades, e obrigações.

A paixão como trabalho torna-se isso: trabalho

Mais tarde, tornei uma das minhas paixões – a moda – em trabalho, e deixei rapidamente de amá-la.

Aprendi na prática que algo que amamos, quando apenas paixão, é livre e leve. Somos soberanos daquilo que amamos.

Mas, enquanto trabalho, nossa paixão toma um segundo plano e é consumida por todas as outras tarefas que envolvem o existir em prol de performance.

Essa característica como tal não é problemática. Tampouco acho que é impossível sustentar tudo o que um trabalho exige em prol de uma paixão e ainda assim continuar tendo gosto por ela.

A questão é que nem toda paixão tem potencial de se tornar trabalho pelo simples fato de existir “amor”. E a felicidade ao exercê-la enquanto trabalho é diferente do que a felicidade livre de apenas permiti-la existir.

Então, será que ser útil é mais importante?

Se trabalhar com o que se ama não garante autorrealização, qual é a alternativa?

No livro So Good They Can’t Ignore You, o autor Cal Newport critica o conselho popular de “siga sua paixão” e argumenta que:

A paixão não vem primeiro. A paixão geralmente surge depois que você fica muito bom em algo valioso.

Muitas pessoas, assim como era o meu caso, acreditam que primeiro você encontra algo que ama e depois constrói uma carreira nisso.

Mas, segundo Newport, na maioria dos casos o caminho real é o contrário:

1. Você desenvolve habilidades raras e valiosas

2. Essas habilidades geram reconhecimento e oportunidades

Mudar um pouco a lente do trabalhar com o que se ama como um prazer que a vida deveria nos proporcionar para o que eu posso servir para a vida, pode ser um caminho para a autorrealização?

O servir como o justo

A ideia de servir me fascina. Acredito que somos parte de um todo e que cada um tem diferentes potências para entregar. E que se conseguirmos ter a sorte e sabedoria de reconhecer nessa vida quais são as nossas potências, e coragem para compartilhá-las, nos autorrealizaremos e nos favorecemos coletivamente como humanidade.

Platão argumentava (e aqui devemos considerar um modelo de sociedade bem diferente do que temos hoje), que “justiça” é quando cada um cumpre bem sua função.

Nesse sentido, a pessoa é “útil” quando vive de acordo com sua natureza e contribui para o todo. Essa ideia sai do âmbito da realização de preferências, e entra em:

• ninguém se realiza isoladamente

• a excelência humana aparece quando contribuímos para o bem coletivo

• A vida boa não é apenas ser feliz ou livre, mas descobrir para que você é naturalmente bom e colocar isso a serviço do mundo

O servir como divino

Além da utilidade, existe a ideia do servir como um ato divino.

Cristina Junqueira, co-fundadora do Nubank, explica como o ato de servir é parte central do sentido que atribui à vida:

“Antes de falar em curtir, eu penso em sentido: por que estamos aqui, o que fazemos com os dons que recebemos, o que Deus espera de nós. Na minha visão, estamos aqui a trabalho: para ser úteis, crescer como pessoa, viver a própria vocação e, no meu caso, construir a minha família. Alegria e diversão entram nesse caminho, mas não comandam a rota”.

A questão é que a ideia de servir não é para todo mundo.

O que acontece quando o servir vai de encontro ao que te gera prazer?

Para quem encontra satisfação no conceito de maximização de vivência de preferências e interpreta a vida de maneira hedonista, a ideia de servir pode ser um fardo que nem todo mundo está disposto a carregar.

A ideia então da autorrealização a partir do ser útil me faz crer que:

• Ou isso é um fator existencial, parte do que é ser humano (reconhecemos e exercemos uma potência → nos sentimos realizados). E um dia, se tivermos sorte, todos vamos experimentar isso. Ou,

• É uma questão de virtude (é preciso ter a sensação de dever em uma perspectiva virtuosa e/ou divina e sustenta-la independente de satisfação, em prol do servir).

A paixão por si só se autorrealiza?

Se explorarmos a ideia de autorrealização através do trabalho mais ligada ao ato de servir do que de amar, como ficam nossas paixões?

É possível amar algo simplesmente por amar, sem a ânsia ou necessidade de fazer disso uma carreira? Conseguimos, no fundo, diferenciar os dois e contentar-nos com o que cada coisa é?

Gosto de acreditar que sim. Mas outro lado meu sempre questiona se todas essas figuras que mencionei sentem em algum lugar dentro de si uma sensação de fracasso por não terem tornado uma de suas paixões uma carreira.

Será que Stewart, independente do sucesso do Flickr e do Slack, se sente frustrado porque não chegou a criar sua empresa de games?

Será que Cillian se contenta com suas expressões de música como hobby (como no seu show Limited Edition na BBC), ou às vezes ainda pensa se essa deveria ter sido sua carreira?

A conversa sobre autorrealização é mais complexa do que o trabalho que você exerce

Com mais perguntas do que respostas, e com incontáveis exemplos e interpretações diferentes, algo que sim entendo é que a autorrealização é a tarefa mais extensa de nossas vidas. E que tentar encontra-la ou resumi-la a uma coisa só é impossível.

Somos seres humanos complexos, cheios de potências, paixões, questionamentos, e faltas. O questionamento e o malabarismo entre o fazer, ser, amar, servir, talvez não seja um de destino, mas uma constante, como tudo na vida.

Gosto da maneira como Carl Jung reflete sobre a autorrealização a partir do processo de individuação.

Esse processo, de maneira resumida (ainda que tentar resumi-lo seja uma ofensa), é o processo de tornar-se quem se é. Trata-se de integrar os fragmentos dispersos da psique numa unidade coerente.

Isso implica três movimentos simultâneos:

1. Diferenciação: separar-se da massa, dos papéis coletivos, das personas impostas pela sociedade

2. Integração: incorporar os conteúdos do inconsciente (a Sombra, a Anima/Animus, os complexos)

3. Centralização: reorganizar a psique em torno do Self, e não do ego

Aqui Jung se distancia do sentido moderno-capitalista de "autorrealização" (realizar seus sonhos, vencer): a individuação nunca se completa. Não é um estado a ser alcançado, mas uma direção de movimento. Uma orientação da vida em relação à totalidade.

A grande pergunta não é “o que quero fazer da minha vida?”, mas: “o que o Self quer realizar através de mim?”.

Conclusões, por agora, sobre tudo isso

No fim, talvez seja impossível dar uma única resposta sobre a maneira mais “apropriada” de pensar em trabalho.

Minha intenção com essa conversa não é dar uma posição definitiva, mas provocar algum tipo de pensamento.

A sensação é que a ideia simples de felicidade e autorrealização a partir do exercício de uma paixão gera mais ansiedade em uma geração que acredita que tudo que foge de satisfação individual é indício de tempo perdido. E com essa abordagem, sim, eu discordo completamente.

Alguns pontos que ficam evidentes:

1. A jornada de ninguém é linear. É loucura esperar que a nossa seja.

2. A vida exige flexibilidade. As vezes nos encontramos em uma rota completamente diferente do nosso plano inicial.

3. É importante começar a pensar mais no servir, em vez de apenas no que eu posso extrair da vida.

4. Para reconhecer nossas potências, é necessário viver. Esse processo acontece com o tempo e com ação.

5. Existe uma diferença importante entre hobby, trabalho, carreira, e vocação.

6. Paixões são expressões da existência humana e devem ser sustentadas independente de serem ofício.

7. A autorrealização é o processo de uma vida inteira que envolve tornar-se quem se é, não apenas exercer uma função.

• Que a conexão humana é o que de mais precioso há.

• Que a vida é por definição abundante, e que abundância não é só de dinheiro e de saúde.

• Que o mundo se abre para nós quando nos abrimos para ele. E que abrir-se para o mundo significa abrir-se para pessoas.

• Que o tempo de descanso e tédio é necessário.

• Que a autonomia é uma das principais riquezas na vida pessoal e profissional.

• Que ir devagar ainda assim é ir.

• Que servir é mais importante que receber. E que importa mais o que a vida está pedindo de mim do que o que eu quer extrair dela. Só assim é possível realizar-se.

• Que o medo é necessário.

No avião de volta para Chicago…

A vida tem formas curiosas de se comunicar.

Essa comunicação, tenho aprendido, não parte de uma habilidade de articular palavras. Esta habilidade, ou melhor, código, é do homem.

A vida se comunica o tempo inteiro, em todo lugar, em uma variedade de dialetos.

O que faz dessa comunicação clara não é nosso grau de alfabetização, mas nossa capacidade de reparar.

Reparar vem de instinto misturado com presença.

Reparar exige atenção, talvez hoje a moeda de cotação mais alta que existe.

Nossa atenção anda dispersa: é entregue a milhares de empresas que por ela competem, à vida alheia, a conteúdos sem substância, ao passado, e ao futuro.

Mas vez ou outra, a vida nos força a recuperar essa atenção e reparar.

A desacelerar. A esquecer que existe um dispositivo que cabe na palma das nossas mãos e que contém em si o mundo inteiro, menos o real.

A deixar as notificações de lado, as comparações na gaveta, e apenas… reparar.

Reparar nos sons da natureza e da cidade. Nas camadas de sabor de um prato de comida, nos detalhes silenciosos de uma história contada, na temperatura do vento e na sensação de caminhar.

Reparar na multitude de vida, sempre abundante em todos seus formatos, independente de tempo e da nossa validação.

Na potência daquilo que é, do que foi, e por consequência daquilo que está por vir.

Reparar nos coloca em perspectiva e em cheque com a vida. É a lembrança física da nossa pequenez, e ao mesmo tempo, grandeza.

Reparar é concordar em existir.

Viagens rápidas demais me fazem desejar que fossem longas. Nunca é tempo suficiente para explorar tudo – mas sempre é tempo suficiente para a vida escancarar na minha cara aquilo que a rotina anestesia.

Treine sua capacidade de reparar.

….Anddd, mais sobre o poder da atenção no meu episódio bonus da semana passada:

Quando penso em assim fazer, imediatamente e involuntariamente convoco uma reunião interna entre muitos lados meus, que parecem não a chegar a um consenso.

– Em português é muito mais fácil.
– Mas se você optar pelo fácil, o que isso diz de você?
– Será que isso me fará perder alguma oportunidade? Ou pior: A oportunidade?
– Será que lá na frente encontrarei alguém, também brasileiro, fazendo assim e desejarei ter continuado?

Minha mania de começar projetos e largar de maneira prematura criaram em mim um mecanismo de autoquestionamento contínuo, às vezes útil, e exaustivo sempre.

Mudo porque, de fato, posso entregar algo mais autêntico e portanto melhor, ou porque quero a adrenalina de outro começo?

Não sei.

Tudo isso soa demasiado dramático para uma decisão que para o(a) leitor(a) deve parecer simples, eu sei.

Fora o medo bobo universal de tomar decisões erradas com coisas que não demandam tanta seriedade, há uma outra camada que intermedia essa mesa redonda:

Meu coração não escreve em inglês.

Minha escrita em inglês é tão robótica quanto um post de LinkedIn para o qual viro o olho e me faz querer ser bem sucedida a ponto de um dia sair de vez daquela rede, para não precisar ler coisa assim nunca mais.

Em inglês, as palavras faltam sentimento. Lembro-me do que Fernando Meirelles disse sobre a diferença entre dirigir em português: “I understand English but I don't feel English. Mango tree in English is just a tree. In Portuguese Mangueira [reminds me of] my mother..”

Minha escrita em inglês é estática, não dança, não samba… em inglês não existe saudade, sobra seriedade, e falta borogodó.

A verdade é que esse drama é, leitor(a), não de quem escolhe em que idioma escrever uma newsletter, mas em que idioma ser. Ou como – e quem – ser, em dois idiomas ao mesmo tempo.

Com tantos questionamentos e sentimentos no ar, sou como escritora-malabarista: equilibrando as raizes e o novo, o conhecido e estrangeiro, o eu daqui e o de lá.

What I’m reading

• Machado de Assis’ Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas): I'm halfway through, so I'll have more of a formed opinion on the story once I'm done reading it. So far, the writing has blown me away.

• Michelle Obama’s “Becoming”: I’m only 8 years late to this one (clown emoji), but I’m glad I finally got to it. I’m actually listening to it on Audible, and I love that it's narrated by Michelle herself. The part where she talks about her Princeton experience and the burden of assimilation really resonated with me as an immigrant.

What I’m eating

My favorite Chicago discovery this month was Uncle Mike's Place. The breakfast is phenomenal. We've had it pretty much every weekend since trying it.

What I’m listening to

Brazilian artist Alceu Valença's Saudade de Pernambuco album. For some very random reason, I started to have recurrent dreams with him when I first moved to the U.S 4 years ago.

I then came across this album, which was written during his self-imposed exile in Paris, during the Military Dictatorship in Brazil.

This album is about being homesick. This month I remember it existed and have been playing it consistently.

Products actually worth buying

I've been on the market for a reliable black purse for probably 3 years (a stupid amount of time for something that should be easy. I know).

I just kept going back and forth! I didn't want to splurge, but at the same time wanted something of high quality.

But I didn't want one that everyone has, or one that I would quickly get sick of.

Then I came across the Verafied Silver Noir Éclair Bag purse on Jenna Litner’s page and got it for Valentine's Day! It just got delivered last week and it's all I want to wear.

It's absolutely gorgeous and can be worn in 3 different styles: as a clutch, with short straps, and with long straps.

Excuse the average picture, I haven't taken any good ones yet lol. But I'm stoked about it.

The other product I repurchased this month is Lolavie's Perfecting leave in conditioner. I had forgotten that this product existed, but I'm so glad I remembered.

The photo below is from a day I washed my hair with regular shampoo and conditioner (literally Suave shampoo) and applied just the leave-in afterwards.

I got it at the same time as the Olaplex Nº 6, and I will say I like this one on my hair 10x better.

I used to think that successful people had this greatness, or talent, that one is either born with or without, that separated them from everybody else.

But then, I started to meet some of these people. And the reality is that they’re not that special.

Obama said it better:

Don’t get me wrong: some people are special. Every now and then, a Leonardo da Vinci is born. But the truth is that the majority of society isn’t. Including me and you.

By saying this, I don’t mean to crush your confidence or to minimize what others have done. Quite the opposite.

I think this realization gives us freedom and courage and I’ll explain to you why.

Why Understanding This Can Give You Courage

When you realize that people are not that special, not only do opportunities feel more achievable, but you also understand that it’s okay if you aren’t either.

You don’t have to wait for a groundbreaking idea to start a new project. You don’t have to be at your 100% all the time. You don’t have to feel always confident to put yourself out there.

(And if you’re the one who has achieved great success and been told you’re special: remembering you’re just human can be freeing. It releases you from the pressure of protecting an image, of having to outperform your past self again and again.)

You have to develop many skills, yes. But you don’t have to be special.

How You Can Start To Shift Your Mindset

1. Understand that you’re not special, but you are unique
I know it feels like these words are the same. They aren’t.

Special gives the idea of better. Unique gives the idea of authentic.

Although you are just another human being, no one is by definition 100% like you.

If you let go of the need to be special, you allow yourself to just be... you.

And by being you, you’ll find your way to places where you actually belong and opportunities that make you feel fulfilled.

2. Remember that “everyone’s shit stinks”
No matter the title.
No matter how much success they’ve had.

As Priscila Pires, Senior Sourcing Director at Kendo Brands (Fenty), put it: everyone’s shit stinks.

That mindset is what helped her build the network that shaped her career.

Understanding that, at the end of the day, people are just people – not special, not gods, not untouchable – gave her the confidence to reach out, start conversations, and sit at tables that might have otherwise felt intimidating.

To reach out, to apply, to try, ask yourself: am I waiting because I'm not ready, or because I still think they're special and I'm not?

Priscila arrived in the United States in 2006 at age 22 as an au pair – it was her first time on an airplane. With limited English and big dreams, she worked multiple jobs while attending community college at night.

With previous roles at L’Oréal, Shiseido, and Huda Beauty, Priscila shared what it’s really like to build a beauty industry career as an immigrant – and why returning to her Brazilian roots in her 40s has been so important.

Suppressing Brazilian Identity to Fit In

For years, Priscila tried to distance herself from her Brazilian roots, wanting to blend into American corporate culture. She didn’t want people to see her as just “the Brazilian immigrant.” But ironically, being bilingual often became her competitive advantage:

“I come to the US to learn English and then being fluent in Portuguese... it was what kind of made a difference on paper for somebody to think that it was worth to talk to me.”

Advice for Immigrants Starting Their Careers

When asked what she’d tell someone feeling “less than” while building their career in a new country, Priscila offers this advice:

“The fact that you have an accent, it’s an act of courage already. It means that you speak more than one language right off the bat... You’re gonna feel less than quite often, but have some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. There was always something that I felt like, okay, this is what I’m working towards... And remember that people are people. Everybody’s shit stinks.”

She emphasizes that the very things immigrants see as disadvantages—accents, different backgrounds, taking unconventional paths—are actually sources of strength and perspective.

When we’re younger, the “group” is everything. We see ourselves through the lens of the pack and build our identities around it. As we age, that shifts. I don’t need to over-explain it.

Friends move away. They find partners and start prioritizing the families they’re building. Suddenly, they (we) have 1/10th of the time they used to.

With limited time, comes a few things.

1. We see clearly who we really value

2. We become more selective as to who we spend our time with, and

3. It can take longer to really get to know and bond with somebody you just met

So all of a sudden, yes: you keep in touch with only a fraction of the people you used to know, and you realize you only have a handful of really good friends. And that's completely ok.

But here's the reality: chances are that these handful of really good friends don't even live in the same city as you, and you only see them a few times a year.

What do you do the rest of the time?

This is where the way I approach friendships changed completely as an adult.

The Power of “Convenient” Friends

As an adult, I’ve started to appreciate convenient friendships much more.

We hear the word “convenient” and we mistake it for “fake.” Especially as women, sometimes we think a friendship isn’t “real” unless it’s incredibly deep.

But look at how men often bond: take “golf buddies”, for example. They like each other, they share a hobby, and they might not know much about each other’s personal lives. Yet, they spend hours together every weekend and have a great time.

I’ve learned to embrace that. It’s okay to have a friend who just like you loves food, and all you do together is explore new restaurants. Or a friend who is in the same work field as you so whenever you need to vent about work, that's who you call.

You don’t have to deeply understand each other’s souls. You just need to share something in common and like each other's companies enough.

The Real Frustration

After years living abroad and having felt frustrated so many times when it comes to friendships, I finally understood that my frustration wasn't because “making friends as adults is hard”. It was because:

1. I was craving connection, but thought the only way to get it was through really deep friendships. I wasn't opening up to “convenient” friends

2. I had not yet found a new dynamic with my closest friends in this new setting

3. I was not allowing time for friendships to develop

Ultimately, the meaning of friendship changes as we do. While it can feel lonely at times, I also do believe that some of the most beautiful friendships can be developed as adults. Keep putting yourself out there and you will find your people!

In sales, the biggest threat isn’t a rival vendor. It’s the decision to do nothing.

When someone is fully committed to change, the question is simple: Who can best help me achieve this vision? But when someone is stuck in the status quo, they aren’t looking for a solution – they are being ruled by fear.

The Predictability of Pain

This applies to every area of life. More often than not, we're able to recognize when a situation sucks. We see that a friendship is draining, a relationship is stagnant, or a job is a dead end.

Logically, you’d expect that realization to trigger an immediate move toward change. But it doesn’t.

We like knowing what to expect. It might suck, but at least it isn’t a surprise. Because of this, many of us never discover how good life can actually be. We stay stuck in the comfort of a painful status quo.

Taking the Wheel

To break this cycle, we have to acknowledge a few things:

1. Name what’s happening. We need to recognize our attachment to the status quo. It’s okay to take time to develop the courage to pursue something better, but at minimum, we need to be able to call it what it is.

2. Safety is a feeling, not just a fact. We have to retrain our nervous systems to understand that “new” doesn’t always mean “dangerous.” We do this by exposing our bodies to the experiences. Literally rationally choosing to do small things that teach us that every day.

3. We don’t need to wait for comfort. It’s okay to act in spite of fear. We don’t need to wait for a moment when it feels comfortable (I wrote more about this here).

Thanks for reading and be careful with the status quo. It’s the most comfortable way to stay unhappy.

Fear of judgment, of being seen trying, of not knowing enough, of failure, of success. Fear has so many faces, some we recognize and others we don’t.

Naming our fears

The very first challenge is making it conscious. Fear is sneaky. It disguises itself as other things. We tell ourselves we don’t want something that badly anymore, it’s not that important right now, the timing isn’t right.

Through these stories, we convince ourselves that the reason we’re not doing something is external and outside of our control. We trick and distract ourselves so we don’t have to face what’s actually there.

So step one is recognizing and naming our fears. What we can’t see, we can’t change.

But then there’s a second layer. The part where we actually get stuck.

Fear is an emotion. Which means two things

1) it has a role, and 2) it will never not exist.

The truth is that we are terrible at handling our emotions. We fail at just feeling and reflecting on them. Instead, we confuse them with action, as if one depends on the other.

So there you are. Stuck, thinking you can only do something when you no longer "feel this way”.

That’s where we trap ourselves. We think fear is blocking us, when really, we are.

It’s completely normal to be afraid of something you’ve never done before. Of something you’re still figuring out. Of something that exposes you. The discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong, it means you’re doing something new.

Acting despite the fear is uncomfortable, yes. But it’s possible. Separating emotion from action is step two.

A letter to fear

I really like the way author Elizabeth Gilbert approaches fear (more here). She wrote a letter to it, and you can do the same:

Dearest Fear,

Creativity and I are about to go on a road trip together. I understand you’ll be joining us, because you always do. I do acknowledge that you believe you have an important job to do in my life, and that you take your job seriously. Apparently your job is to induce complete panic whenever I’m about to do anything interesting and, may I say, you are superb at your job. So by all means, keep doing your job, if you feel you must. But I will also be doing my job on this road trip, which is to work hard and stay focused. And Creativity will be doing its job, which is to remain stimulating and inspiring. There’s plenty of room in this vehicle for all of us, so make yourself at home, but understand this: Creativity and I are the only ones who will be making any decisions along the way. I recognize and respect that you are part of this family, and I will never exclude you from our activities, but still your suggestions will never be followed. You’re allowed to have a seat, and you’re allowed to have a voice, but you are not allowed to have a vote. You’re not allowed to touch the road maps; you’re not allowed to suggest detours; you’re not allowed to fiddle with the temperature. Dude, you’re not even allowed to touch the radio. But above all else, my dear old familiar friend, you are absolutely forbidden to drive..

The person you admire most experiences fear too. Courage isn’t the absence of it.

Practice acting despite the fear even if in small ways, in controlled environments, building evidence for yourself.

What’s something you’re not doing right now, because you allowed fear to drive?

Over here, we stayed home and treated it as just another night. It was fantastic. No pressure to find the perfect plan, to have the most fun. We did what we love to do every night and I was very happy about it.

How to actually (and finally) achieve your new year’s resolution

I'm a person who likes to do new year’s resolutions because it helps me live with intention.

BUT, what I've noticed is that resolutions become a burden for most people. I believe we have the tendency to overcommit, or commit to things we WANT, not the things we're willing to pay the price for. Huge difference.

4 mindset shifts that will make starting easier

If this year you want to start something new: starting is less about feeling ready and more about making and owning a decision.

I firmly believe that while we do need to have some minimum requirements to start anything, we become ready as we go.

Everyone's new year’s resolution (every year)!!! Ha. I've learned that at least for me, the reason it's so hard (other than the fact that the dopamine levels are completely different when you're on social media vs. reading something useful), is that we

1. don't spend time creating a good curation, and

2. don't develop a good (and easy) process to access that content.

If you want to consume better content, desire alone isn’t enough. You need to work on the WHAT and the HOW first.

How to find your style

I hired a stylist 2 years ago and it was a game changer, but since then I've changed and while I do like the clothes I own, I felt like something was missing.

So I worked with AI (Claude) to figure out what it was and guide my next purchases. The results were extremely helpful.

The best Oreo truffles

I made these oreo truffles for new years and they were absolutely amazing. I didn't have dried rose hips so I used flaky salt and Oreo crumbles on the top instead. Hands down the best truffles and so easy to make.
