was an added bonus that her school was awarded a gold certificate for both Junior and Senior Choir performances. They received an excellent and wholesome critique from Dr Francois van den Berg, adjudicator and CEO of the National Eisteddfod Academy.

The event ran longer than the 2 hours of my scheduled attendance, which proved worth far more than the R71,00 ticket charge. The following was gained in terms of enrichment:

· I listened to an excellent selection of poetry, content for public speaking, my daughter’s school choirs [junior and senior] performances, a solo piano performance by a very young lady, a monologue, and an impromptu book read.

· From everything observed, the future does lie in the hands of our youth…

Art created is derived from deep reflections, from the human soul. The level of content, courage, and performances from our local scholars [and those from surrounding areas], although from small-town environments, were larger than life in many ways. Watching this encouraged me as a parent and a member of society that there is hope and potential despite many of our daily challenges.

· A variety of topics were explored with such creativity and zest, such as:

deep-rooted changes that need to occur in society to address social challenges, patriarchy [from a family-dynamics approach], shallow concepts of wealth, societal observations and human potential, to name just a few.

· Observing the individual care and feedback from judges proved useful to both me and my daughter in terms of understanding the power of voice, tone, body language, the power of the pause and audience connection. The second adjudicator, Hugo Taljaard, Actor and Assistant Director, whom I got to witness for most of the drama-rooted performances, lived up to his expertise with a spirit of gold. Overall, there was much that I learnt in terms of self-presentation and audience contact simply from observing the in-depth critique he provided [with much humour] to each performer, which was invaluable for me as an author aspirant.

Is there anything else that this event allowed me the opportunity to explore?

· The Value of Repetitive performances: performed for different audiences and judges, it serves as an opportunity for exploring different views, reactions and deeper observations in many respects.

· The value of certificates and professional critique in these settings: boosts confidence and spirit in the ability to overcome personal barriers for presentation, especially at school level; it builds a great foundation to build forward from [ as an adult pursuing art as a reality, it requires resilience, especially in dealing with public criticism vs authenticity and if this is the foundation from an early age, it certainly will propel potential forward].

· The value of art as therapy in navigating day-to-day challenges [ as creators, viewers, and participants] is often underestimated. I do hope such events work like a healthy form of a virus, improving our human and societal potential with art as the catalyst.

Conclusions

Not all learning is a course to be signed up for; sometimes it exists right under our noses through school and community events and the simple, beautiful acts of the humans in our everyday society. Sometimes it is a favour to the self and others to show up despite our anxieties and schedules, and take a chance at life, at education and at art, no matter our age.

Additional notes: Feel free to explore more about the National Eisteddfod of South Africa for yourself and how it contributes to our society. whisper rhythm to wildflowers and fireflies, all the while being contained by Earth’s gravitational pull. Observing the beauty of another planet [in this case, two], though, with such proximity, stirred much speculation and splendour throughout.

These notions charged my crafting moments, integrating my essence through reflections, memory, and play during storytelling and workshops.

I admit that horrors were lurking on the edges of my pleasures. I lost some of my creative work during the first 9 days of June, which led to fixing some serious lag issues on my computer. I later realised that the forces of nature were propelling me to confront negligence, which ultimately led to many vital accomplishments.

The following was checked off my list [making me feel like the ruler of my creative space]:

1. Menagerie Submission

· Submitted during the first week of June [just before my computer issues].

· Despite having worked with a close reading in the first round, the second round of edits was left mainly up to me, and this was a little scary.

· I was relieved once I pushed to click submit. I wrote more than I expected and then edited [a process of add, doubt, love, reduce, and let go].

· The final submission landed at 8150 words of a complete magical realism story that touches on real-life inspirations [and horrors] and the whispers of Eastern and African mythology, with some universal concepts stirred by creative play.

· I am amazed by what I have written, and this alone is a success.

I understand that my submission will be challenged by many other writers and stories, as well as by requirements beyond my control. This is a chance I have taken, and only time will tell what will become of this story and how it reaches potential readers. So yeah, I wish everything well with courage, heart and creative spirit.

2. AVBOB Poetry Workshop:

· Hosted by Phelelani Makhanya [Free Workshop].

· All the workshops have been co-hosted by poetry teacher Liesl Jobson. May proved to throw its challenges that pushed me on the edge of reality numerous times and this song, forms part of my inspirational mix was replayed often as my heart needed.

I am grateful for my writing progress, and I love how my experiences often integrate into my reality as much as my reality can be used to inspire the substance of my writing.

I don’t know where my efforts will lead, I do know I am far from perfect and this in itself where perfection lies.

I am learning every day and I do trust that wherever I need to go, that it May and Shall be as it Will. I do my part by doing my best and putting my effort, this is indeed what I truly have control over. Sometimes I am not my best and I let it be , because I am an adult who is responsible for other lives and responsibilities too, and I accept that I need to breathe and be or simply go sleep with the hope of a productive dawn. This psychology is a fundamental method to my creative fires [some call it madness].

Sometimes this journey is dark and perilous but I am in some decent company most times and there are moments that glitter more that any gold that sparks my heartfelt visions and soul. She was a street-smart and resilient lady. Despite not possessing a formal education due to socio-economic conditions, my grandmother had an innate wisdom I connected with, especially in her storytelling and unique use of words and expressions [which were sometimes intensely exaggerated or hilarious].

This moment of reflection allowed me to recognise her value on her distinct timeline, acknowledging how this shapes who I am, as I get to live out my expression through my unique voice.

This workshop served as a constructive platform that allowed participants to identify how memories can create meaningful mythical expressions through the formulation of poetry, while tapping into the present, the past, the possible future, and, well…more on unconscious capabilities, imaginative possibilities, and the ability to heal through release.

Two hours flew by, and it became evident that many complex individuals out in the world are unaware of how to express themselves through storytelling as a release, and how certain expressive mechanisms, such as journaling and writing poetry or fiction, help us deal with our deep-rooted fears, hurts, and concerns about our reality in relation to our deciphering of the self, the other, and the world.

You may explore this further on: The AVBOB Poetry Project

B:

Title: Writing with Jen Thorpe

Theme: Memoir and life writing

Type: Online [4 hours]

Funding: Paid [from a rigid creative investment budget]

I was sceptical about whether to sign up for this, and once I was in, I was ever so grateful to have nipped my critical objections in the bud.

I do have a close friend who has already crafted a draft memoir, and I encouraged her to sign up for Jen’s workshop, too. This added a different dimension to our engagement and proved valuable for her own project, which I am very happy about.

I also connected with a writer whom I came across at the last workshop; this time, we connected in the breakout room, where we got to share our draft pieces from the exercises [I love that nobody is “obliged’ to share as well]. I realised that we both had pieces that touched on rich ancestral roots, with our connectivity resulting in discussions about our grandmothers’ stories and their influence in our lives.

All of this led to another meaningful mutual Substack subscription that puts a smile on my dial [I like being cheesy sometimes, as much as I like grilled cheese].

Takeaways from the Memoir Writing workshop overall:

There is so much more to memoir writing that I would have dared imagine.

This shattered my narrow perspective on it and stimulated a different view, which influences my play, concepts of reach and writing goals.

Learning about useful methods of generating content through memories and methodology for memoir writing.

Learning a unique poetic style in the last exercise was a delightful surprise that challenged my expressive style, and it now adds value to any writing genre.

Once again, Jen wrapped up the session by granting us access to related resources, which were mailed to me as an extra bonus after the workshop [which I can tap into as needed].

OTHER WRITING PROJECTS

My Novel Revision and Integration Through SA Writers’ College

I remain paused on module six, so I have time to focus on the Menagerie Anthology submission.

Fortunately, I am on time with my course timeline and targets, although my mind feels as if I am committing some sort of crime by deviating; therefore, I dabbled in a small portion.

I realised that having many other priority responsibilities makes it challenging to juggle many writing projects despite intensive scheduling. Though I have noticed that exploring different project variations adds a deeper value to my main concept.

My Anthology submission is 5000 words at this point, and I decided to submit it to Jen Thorpe for a close reading.

There are approximately another 2000 words to complete the entire story, which I am engaged in wrapping up and will consider Jen Thorpe’s guided self-edit workshops, which commence later in May.

This is my first short story for submission, and although I had drafted ideas, I am pretty amazed at how the creative process took hold. Most of the story revealed itself as I played between imagination, research and mild editing. This prompted me to reflect on Stephen King's On Writing and draw parallels with his comparison of story writing to archaeology.

Research:

[Everything here occurs in slow yet purposeful and absorptive increments]

Season 5 of 7: Buffy the Vampire

Slayer [recommended by tutor at the commencement of my course] *. I got to read and receive encouraging feedback on one of the exercises. [ A huge courage boost!!!]

I had never viewed science as a poetic mechanism that merges with our human emotions and expression until this mind-bending workshop. This is a game-changer for me going forward.

It was inspiring to hear what people of all ages and walks of life constructed from the provided exercises, and we were all reminded of the beauty of poetry, whether we succeeded in the competitions or not.

After the workshop, I immediately RSVP’d for the remaining four that will be held in the upcoming months.

This got me wondering about AVBOB’s objectives, and upon reading more about their project’s aims and initiatives, I can’t help but be humbled by the privilege of such a poetic space, free for those who are simply willing to register and take a chance at expression.

Link for if you dare to explore: The AVBOB Poetry Project

Discovering the South African Pub Hub and dabbling with Speculative Fiction Matters

Discovering Jen Thorpe on Substack was a breath of fresh air,

She is a feminist writer and researcher with many great books and writing projects to her name, including the South African Writers’ Pub Hub, which I have recently been acquainted with and added to “A living list of South African Substack Writers”. [Posted on March notes]

Exploring the efforts behind the project and what it offers readers and writers on Substack, along with a simple request to consider buying her a virtual coffee or one of her books, the very freedom of this leaves me inspired and in awe.

Well, I chose not to buy Jen Thorpe the coffee just yet…

I am a writer on a budget, who has already signed up with The SA Writers’ College, as a means to develop my craft while integrating a second draft revision [taking a life of its own at the moment], of my debut novel, navigating unknown territory with loads of other obligations, I decided to sign up for her Speculative Fiction Workshop [Online Version], instead. I concluded that this was a sweeter, mutually beneficial deal for that moment.

This workshop took place on 20 March from 9 am until 1 pm.

It was great to connect with other amazing writers and listen to their work. What was remarkable and blew my socks off was getting the opportunity to read one of my exercises to Marius Du Plesis [the founder and publisher of Mirari Press], and I also got to listen to his. Although I nearly shook in my imaginary boots from nerves, it was also one of those priceless moments that will be etched as miraculous and inspirational for the rest of my journey. [Ginormous courage boost!!!]

Note: I did engage with Marius a week before making a purchase of the book I posted in my notes [The Company of Birds, by Nerine Dorman], so this subsequent experience made the workshop feel like an alternative universe of dreams and potential, a bit more tangible.

Takeaways from the Speculative fiction workshop overall:

Jen Thorpe is an enjoyable and engaging teacher.

Learning more about how broad the genre is [ despite my personal research]

Learning about a useful tool that is an effective way to generate possible speculative fiction stories [jaw-dropping stuff]

Access to endless, related resources, mailed to me as an extra bonus after the workshop [which I can mess around with and use whenever.]

Information about Mirari Press opening submissions for Menagerie [which I decided to participate in using the tools acquired from Jen Thorpe’s Workshop].

My Novel Revision and Integration Through SA Writers’ College

I chose to take a slower approach with module five of The Write a Novel Course, considering the additional explorations mentioned above in conjunction with my notes [posted in March] on the flash fiction competitions and The 5 Day Awaken Your Senses Writing Intensive experiences.

Despite my intentions, I was surprised to conclude and submit module five [2470 words merging scenes with course exercises] on March 31.

Upon reflection, as I sit here writing this, I realise that March has been the most creatively rewarding month since my journey, and I can’t help but glow like the magical essence of the moon in my fantasy-verse.

Although… there is always suspense awaiting feedback on my constructs…

Research:

[Everything here occurs in slow yet purposeful and absorptive increments]

Season 3: Buffy the Vampire Slayer [recommended by tutor at commencement of my course] * My Novel Character Zander existed before discovering the Xander in Buffy.

Understanding Dreams: Keith Hearne and David Melbourne [ A book gifted to me]

The Company of Birds: Nerine Dorman [ My personal selection- Book]

52 Life-Changing Quotes, To Inspire, Reflect, Transform and Lead: Denzil C. Filtering out distracting and destructive content from my feed became a daily practice, both online and offline.

This led to my brief contributions to Tolkienology [a fan page dealing with all things JRR Tolkien], which helped build my writing confidence and reconnected me with Tolkien’s great legacy. It later came to my attention that this group disbanded because the founder was battling his own real-life version of darkness.

I moved on to a mentorship program with Echart Aurelius Hughes, the founder of the Online Book Club and author of The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All. I then worked as a reviewer representative for 11 months. The material from the mentorship training and doing paid reviews eventually made me realise that it was time to start focusing on my own unfulfilled dreams of writing, while efficiently supporting our small business goals [survival 101] with my partner, enabling holistic support and presence for our young daughter in the process.

Exploring and Filtering Further:

With time and exposure, the Facebook author groups that have proven most beneficial for my journey are :

The Writers Forum

Authors Supporting Authors

Writers Helping Writers

Creative Writing

Note: There are issues everywhere, as such is the nature of reality. I use the groups intentionally to identify what is relevant to my goals and to encourage others. There are some really useful discussions, challenges, tips, and even lessons to learn when people occasionally do incite chaos. I access these through gaps in my day, so convenience and accessibility are great features.

A discussion on The Writers Forum provided insight into my use of Microsoft Word [for narrative creation] and Excel [for worldbuilding], noting that I already had experience with the software from studying and working over the years.

One day, a Jacana Media Masterclass advert appeared on my Facebook timeline at an affordable price, which led me to attend:

Gabeba Baderoon in her masterclass on Cultivating Habits of Dreaming, Reading and Daily Writing, which then led me to sign up for,

Helen Moffet in her master class on An Introduction to Editing for Authors, Editors and All Wordsmiths

These workshops were pivotal in many ways and sparked my awareness of the writing landscape in South Africa and its relation to the world.

I progressed to participating in my first writing contest, a Flash fiction contest with a critique option from Cranked Anvil. Thanks again to the Writers Forum for a discussion about overcoming first drafts. I achieved a 50,000-word target of a super messy draft and experienced my first sequence of international writing sprints. Note that I was a Grammarly user before all of this [purely for checks] and still use it now.

During the December Pro-Writing Aid, offered video resources to help one move forward with possible revision and publishing paths for the first drafts. The cost of publishing and the concept of using beta readers and an editor became alarming, leaving me in a pickle. Reading about scams and wasted expenditure relating to these in the Writer’s group got me thinking endlessly.

I was reminded of an advert that I had come across from the SA Writers’ College. I had read up on The Write a Novel Course (obsessively, with research into similar courses offered elsewhere), and this one won hands-down in terms of time, value for money, and the opportunity to work with an established author while maintaining the core priorities in my life.

I signed up for the course and began the new year, approaching my second draft revision as an integration of developing my craft skills with the basics of the novel course. Among the available tutors, I was assigned to (and was fortunate to be accepted by) local author Nerine Dorman. I am currently on module five of twelve with deep gratitude for the rewarding process of growth and guidance offered thus far.

With my novel project growing, I realised the limitations of my tools. It was as if by divine timing that, at the book reading by author Denzil C. Lakay [which I recently posted in my notes], I was introduced to his friend and sponsor [also working on a book], who advised me to consider using Scrivener. I researched the tool’s use and found a brilliant YouTube video [Is Scrivener Worth It in 2026?] by TC Burr that propelled me forward.

I am currently on the trial version of the Scrivener word-processing program, with TC Burr a click away for additional knowledge and support regarding this writing tool. I am happy to confirm, in terms of organising and viewing my novel project, it was the next best value-for-money and time-saving decision I have made (Yes, I am signing up for the affordable, paid version).

Lastly, on Substack: I reiterate that this space has led me to many great connections and sources of inspiration, which you will continue to find in re-stacks and notes, as well as in my Novel Experiment articles/progress logs.

Thank you for your time. Wishing you the best in all ways.
<div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{"gallery":{"images":[{"type":"image/jpeg","src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/5b6d160e-f669-44b6-9eb3-f0f223bd802e_4000x3000.jpeg"}],"caption":"There is No Limit To What You Can Do","alt":"Pic: An Elf Carrying a Dragon and a staff in a glass display, a cherished ornament and gift of inspiration. Books.

Lecture One: The Philosophy of Writing (Science Fiction and Fantasy).

(Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEUh_y1IFZY)

The enclosed link will take you to the Lecture series from 2025 (older versions are doing their rounds on the net).

My View:

This was worth every minute as Sanderson discussed the pressures of writing in a captivating and hearty manner.

I watched this lecture twice to grasp as much as possible for good measure.

Sanderson points out the possible realities that exist on a spectrum, and I appreciate the value of this. I agree with his view that writing in itself is a priceless reward.

Developing into a professional author, writing full time (being paid for it), although a rarity (which he, however, eventually achieved after passionate toil), would be the ultimate dream!)

He highlights that everyone writes for different reasons, and it is important to be grounded in one's purpose, as it becomes easy to lose the joy and reward of it.

So why do I write?

I write to connect with my subconscious and play with my creative abilities consciously. To connect with other beings on this wavelength (I later discovered that Stephen King refers to this as telepathy). I write to create what I wish to read with a sincere hope that this pleasure I derive holds as a reward to the hearts of others who are open to exploring such possibilities.

In terms of writing styles, the comparison of George R.R Martin and Stephen King to gardeners (no outline) and architects (outline and structure) with hybrid styles existing in between was great in allowing me to visually establish my particular style (pretty hybrid at this point).

Sanderson emphasizes the importance of knowing when to tune into one's instinct and also iignorethe advice from others, including him ( a pretty golden mindset)! I particularly navigate life through observation and testing until I establish my own sense of reality (in relation to the universal one, of course!).

Sanderson writes 2000/4000 words every day, comprising two 4-hour sessions. This works for him. However, he discusses other options, such as one 4-hour session every Saturday for a year, as a possibility for completing a book in a year. This was great in putting things into perspective and establishing goal-setting.

When the term “Brain space” (for creativity) rolled off Sanderson’s tongue, it hit home for me. The years of inner turmoil of dealing with a concept that nagged at the corner of my mind subtly and consistently, but due to a very adventurous, survival mode phase, I had no brain space for crafting, and I feel that space now. Chiseling out time is tricky, but I am chiseling away. Recognizing this, set my creative neurons on transformative fire.

So, yes, this video had a lot of wins for me, and I intend to pursue his other videos dealing with plot, setting, character, and business, forging forward.

Stay connected, and all the best!
