I said I was taking a break.

Now it’s time to show everyone what I did instead.

Apparently this is what I call a break.

I guess my version of rest is refreshing Alaska’s returns at one in the morning. Watching a primary to see whether Republicans nominate another candidate they’ll have to spend the fall rescuing. Recalculating Senate control because a new poll dropped while I was eating dinner. At some point I had to admit that my hobby, the thing I actually do instead of relaxing, is assigning probabilities to Kansas or Nebraska.

I needed to stop writing long enough to remember whether I still liked writing. Writing doesn’t come as naturally to me as data analysis or watching markets. So I published less. I stopped trying to produce two thousand words every time somebody in Washington did something stupid.

Then I found out how often they really do something actually stupid.

Then I spent time building thirteen full Senate forecasts.

Then four shorter calls, because every probability still feeds the chamber math and apparently I couldn’t leave Wyoming alone even though nobody needs a Wyoming forecast.

Don’t worry, Nebraska got the full treatment because an independent mechanic had somehow turned a state Trump carried by twenty-one points into a real Senate race.

Every forecast got a date.

Every change got preserved instead of quietly edited away. Every new poll, fundraising report, primary result, scandal, and meaningful campaign development went into the file. Every time a probability moved, I had to explain why, in writing, where I could see it later. That’s what “version-controlled” actually means here: I wasn’t allowed to pretend I’d always known where a race was going, and I wasn’t allowed to delete an earlier call just because it later looked embarrassing.

Somewhere around Texas Version 5, I realized something: holy shit, I had accidentally built a national Senate forecast.

I did not begin this project expecting to forecast a Democratic Senate. I’m still a registered Republican. Barely, these days. I’m still praying the Trump takeover of my party ends soon, but that’s another article. I arrived at this conclusion one state at a time, and I checked the arithmetic more times than I care to admit.

Waiting another month would’ve made this safer. But why would I ever do that? It also would’ve made the forecast considerably less useful to anyone reading it now.

What follows is what I was doing while the newsletter looked quiet.

Four parts, because even I know better than dropping twelve thousand words into one email.

Part I is the numbers.

All of them. The entire board. Take a breath.

Part II is the seven races that will decide who controls the Senate for the rest of Trump’s term. Democrats need five of the seven, and Michigan is the only one of the seven they’re actually defending.

Part III is how Republicans ended up spending money in places they were supposed to be able to ignore.

Part IV is why a registered Republican is publishing a Democratic-leaning forecast under his own name.

I won’t promise exact publication dates because I know myself. They’re coming in order. Eventually.

I know what this looks like.

A Democrat leading in Texas. A Republican winning Iowa by less than a point. Susan Collins behind a candidate who entered the race in July. Jim Risch somehow forcing me to write about Idaho.

I checked all of it again.

A national environment hovering around D+6 explains part of this. The wild part is how many very different states are moving in the same direction at once. Texas has Paxton. Ohio has data centers. Alaska has Peltola. Maine has Collins and Trump.

Every race has its own local mechanism. The direction is nationally aligned.

Thirteen of these races got full, dated treatment. Florida, Louisiana, Montana, and Wyoming got shorter calls. I still assigned them probabilities, because 99% is a number, and Senate math remains annoyingly literal about that.

Wyoming remains Wyoming.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

First, Let’s Count to 51 Without Embarrassing Ourselves

The Senate has one hundred seats.

This should be the easy part.

Republicans hold 53.

Democrats and the independents who caucus with them hold 47, and that 47 already includes Michigan, Georgia, New Hampshire, and Minnesota, seats they must hold in November, not flip.

A 50-50 Senate stays Republican, because Vice President Vance breaks the tie.

So Democrats need 51 outright. A net gain of four in November.

North Carolina makes 48. Maine makes 49. Ohio makes 50. Alaska makes 51. Texas makes 52.

That’s the current favorite map.

Texas is the cushion. For now.

Democrats can lose one projected flip and still reach 51. Lose two, and Vice President Vance keeps the Senate Republican. Mission failed for Chuck Schumer.

That’s where I stopped, stared at the spreadsheet, ran it again, and laughed.

At the beginning of the year, Kalshi priced Democratic Senate control at roughly one-third. Markets and human psychology are useful in that way. They preserve exactly how confident everyone was before they changed their minds.

On February 19, my first Electoral Pressure Index came in at 76. Major Wave territory.

By March 31, I had the EPI climbing to 80.

By April 27, it reached 81, and I published a 52–48 Democratic Senate.

By May 18, the EPI had reached 82. The generic ballot averaged D+5.53 across 106 polls, with Democrats leading 103 of them.

I kept the Senate at 52–48.

Since then, the special-election evidence has continued pointing in the same direction. Across forty-two contested legislative special elections, Democrats are running a median of 9.9 points ahead of their 2024 presidential baseline.

This past week, CNN’s Harry Enten arrived at the same chamber split through a slightly different collection of states. His model now gives Democrats a 52 percent chance of taking the Senate.

He said the broader result surprised him.

I’m sure it did.

Kalshi has moved repeatedly throughout the year and currently has Republicans narrowly favored. Decision Desk and several other forecasters still lean Republican.

That’s fine.

Agreement would make the remaining three months considerably less interesting to the part of my brain that treats disagreement as free data.

The important part is that the 52–48 map I published in April, dismissed by plenty of people as impossible, is now sitting on cable television with a professional graphic behind it.

I had the number in April.

I didn’t build a Democratic Senate because I wanted one. I built it because the numbers kept producing one, and eventually arguing with the arithmetic became embarrassing.

Election Day can still make me look brilliant or stupid. The timestamps will survive either outcome.

That’s why I kept them.

The map was already there.

The consensus finally moved into the same neighborhood.

The Map Says 52. My Spreadsheet Says Calm Down.

Before anyone screenshots 52-48 and turns it into a prophecy, four different numbers need to be separated.

Margin is my current best guess at the final vote spread in one race. Win probability is how often that candidate comes out ahead across the plausible range of outcomes for that race. Expected seats is the probability-weighted average across the whole board, not the same thing as picking every favorite. The current favorite map is what you get if you hand every seat to whoever’s ahead, probability be damned.

Talarico being favored in Texas does not mean I think Texas has suddenly become comfortable Democratic territory. He leads my projected margin by half a point and wins 52% of the plausible outcomes. That is about as narrow as a favorite can get without the word becoming pointless. In Vegas, this would be a pick’em with paperwork.

Give every race to its current favorite and Democrats finish with 52 seats.

Weight every race by its actual win probability and the number falls to 50.7 Democratic-aligned seats.

Then I ran the simulation under the wonderfully convenient assumption that all seventeen races behave independently. That produces a Democratic majority in 54.8% of outcomes.

I do not believe American politics can be measured honestly to the nearest tenth of a percentage point.

Anyone claiming otherwise has discovered a level of precision the evidence cannot possibly support.

Senate races move together. If Republican voters come home in Ohio, there is a decent chance they are coming home in Alaska and Texas during the same week, driven by the same national event. A recession, a war, a scandal, or one especially catastrophic debate can move half the board before breakfast.

The spreadsheet is allowed to produce 54.8%.

I’m allowed to exercise judgment.

My final estimate is a 52% to 55% chance of Democratic control, with a central range of 49 to 53 Democratic-aligned seats.

The favorite map is 52–48 Democratic.

The expected value is 50.7 Democratic-aligned seats.

The actual balance of power remains one bad week away from changing. So yes, I am calling the Senate for Democrats today. Barely.

Enough for me to make the call.

Anyone celebrating in August should probably stay away from prediction markets.

Seven States. Five Wins. That’s the Election.

Give every race outside these seven to its current favorite, and Democrats begin at 46 seats everywhere else on the board. Win five of the seven, and they hit 51. Win six, which is what my board currently favors, and they hit 52.

Michigan is the major defense.

North Carolina is the gateway.

Texas, Maine, Ohio, Iowa, and Alaska are the knife fight.

Texas — Current holder: Republican.

Michigan — Current holder: Democratic.

Forecast: El-Sayed (D) 64%.

Maine — Current holder: Republican.

Forecast: Jackson (D) 58%.

Ohio — Current holder: Republican.

And somehow all of them are part of the same equation. Politics is beautiful sometimes.

Michigan and New Hampshire are the only defenses. The other six are opportunities. Democrats need to win five of the seven.

My board currently gives them six.

Here Is How I End Up Looking Stupid in November

Republicans don’t exactly need a miracle.

They need Republicans to start behaving like Republicans again.

Paxton needs Texans who dislike him to vote for him anyway. Which isn’t asking for much from Texas Republicans.

Collins needs Maine polling to be wrong again, the way it’s been wrong about her before. Teflon Collins just needs to survive one more time.

Sullivan needs Republican transfers in Alaska to behave like Republican transfers. Trump still carried the state by thirteen points in 2024.

Hinson needs Iowa’s registration advantage to matter more than Turek’s proven crossover appeal.

Husted needs Ohio to remember it’s Ohio. Sherrod Brown has watched late Republican consolidation erase a polling lead before.

Most important, Republicans nationally need Trump to become less toxic before voting begins.

If one projected Democratic flip fails, Democrats finish at 51. If two fail, they finish at 50. That’s the entire Republican recovery plan.

I don’t know whether that consolidation will happen. I know it usually does. But I also know this year Republicans are asking it to repair more races at once than usual.

They never will.

The truth is way simpler: I’m tired. I spent a year writing 142 articles. 142 articles * an average of ~2,250 words an article = a lot of fucking typing and research.

I’m not depressed about politics at all, quite the opposite, and I’m certainly not ever giving up on writing, I’m just tired.

Another poll, another race, another scandal.

Nobody is forcing me to follow any of this as religiously as I do. But I do it because I love it, because I think paying attention matters, and because eventually all of this becomes history. But eventually your brain wants to slow down. Sometimes I need to remember I’m actually 22, and maybe I should be doing literally anything other than refreshing county returns from a primary a few thousand people across the country are watching.

So I’ve been trying to stop writing 2,000 words about every scandal that crosses my social feed. Most of them truly don’t even deserve that much attention from me. Maybe this one doesn’t actually either. I don’t know.

It definitely pissed me off enough that here we are. I kept thinking about the fucking necklace and Max Miller’s poor two-year-old daughter.

So let’s talk about Chuck Edwards, Max Miller, and why they both disgust me.

Chuck Edwards

The findings

He hired her at 19. His own chief of staff originally opposed it, saying the job was too demanding for someone that young.

Chuck insisted anyway. He gave her a necklace.

She wore it for a while, then stopped. He noticed, and he was left disappointed like an immature child. That’s the whole pattern of behavior in miniature. None of this was isolated. It never is with men like this. There were the flowers he sent after she’d already told him something made her uncomfortable. The thousands of dollars in gifts to young staffers. The three-page letter telling one employee she had “written a complex chapter in his heart.”

There was also the Christmas tree he offered to skip House votes to help decorate. Chuck is a member of Congress (for now).

Go vote. Do your job.

I’m three years older than one of these women was. Three fucking years. Nineteen feels like five minutes ago to me. At 19 I wasn’t some fully formed professional capable of navigating congressional power structures. Nobody is. I’m still not. That’s exactly why the burden of maintaining that boundary was never supposed to be hers.

After sixteen witnesses and nearly 1,500 pages, the committee wrote: “at minimum blind to that reality, and at worst, dismissive of the impact his inappropriate conduct had on the careers and wellbeing of two women on his staff.” The committee also found he’d deleted messages relevant to its investigation. And it even said openly that Congress “regrettably lost two staffers because of Representative Edwards’ conduct.”

That’s the committee’s own conclusion. My words would’ve been harsher.

“I did not know how to say no,” she said.

When one person controls the other’s entire career, “she could’ve just said no” is a lazy way to think about power imbalances. He is a man in his 60s with a congressional seat and decades of experience. He had literally written sexual-harassment policy himself and investigated claims, in his own words, “many, many times.”

He knew the rules. He’d fucking helped write them.

Maybe he truly convinced himself this was all harmless behavior. People like him are very good at believing whatever version of events lets them keep themselves innocent. This is exactly why power needs constraints from outside itself, not just “good intentions” from inside it.

Congress has declared war. Funded the Moon program. Passed civil-rights laws. Maybe I’m corny about that. I probably am. The moon landing still gives me chills. I don’t really care how that sounds.

And we’re talking about decorating a fucking Christmas tree over going to vote.

One of the women texted a friend that she felt “scared lowkey.” She was talking to a friend and still made the word smaller. A title doesn’t make you more of a man. Ask me again at 40, but I’m pretty sure of that one. Making somebody less than half your age afraid to tell you the simple word “no” isn’t strength. The more power I ever get, the safer I want people to feel telling me no.

Maybe this is the finance part of my brain, but human potential has inherent future value.

You can’t DCF a human life. Thank God. Knowledge compounds. Confidence compounds. A good mentor creates value that spreads to everyone that person eventually leads, decades down the line. A bad mentor destroys value that might have compounded for decades.

Then investigators asked whether he would “do anything differently.”

He said no.

That answer bothers me almost as much as everything before it.

August 3: report comes out.

August 5: Edwards drops his reelection bid.

August 10: Republicans replace him.

What a fucking waste of a congressional seat, two careers, and everyone’s time.

Max Miller

The allegations

Miller is different from Edwards in one crucial respect: these are allegations, not completed Ethics Committee findings.

I don’t know whether he did these things. What he’s accused of doing is fucking horrifying.

Emily Moreno, his ex-wife, alleges that Miller held a gun to her head while she was changing their infant’s diaper, threw hot water from a skillet, and shoved her into a wall.

All allegations.

Their daughter was found to have a fractured collarbone after a period in his custody. No criminal charges. The child-services investigation was reported as unsubstantiated. He denies everything for now.

Bernie Moreno, his former father-in-law, first said Miller is “increasingly erratic and dangerous” and that he personally holds his breath every minute Miller has custody of his own granddaughter. He’s since gone further and publicly called for Miller to resign. Ohio Sen. Jon Husted also called for Miller to resign. Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy also called for him to withdraw, warning that Miller could “cost Republicans the House.”

This all clearly stopped being a family dispute a while ago.

The Ethics Committee opened a review on August 4, at Miller’s own request. Opening a review is not a finding of wrongdoing.

I can honestly be disgusted by what I’m reading and still admit I don’t actually know what happened inside that innocent child’s house.

Those two thoughts coexist fine in my head.

Maybe the investigation clears him. Then publish that too. That’s why we investigate.

Now finish the fucking investigation.

A million dollars buys a lot of television. It doesn’t buy the public any answers. Amid all the political pressure, Miller put two $500,000 loans into his campaign. The deadline for Republicans to replace him on the ballot has now passed.

He stayed.

He outlasted his critics’ ability to replace him.

A federal lawsuit filed August 12 alleges that a nude photograph of his daughter was publicly disclosed in materials submitted in his defense.

The lawsuit

She is two.

If character matters, it has to matter when it’s expensive. Based on what is public today, Max Miller must lose his race.

What I actually think

If I ever have real power, use it against me.

I’m saying this at 22 because saying it at 22 costs me literally nothing. Future me doesn’t get to say things got complicated, or that I didn’t understand the pressure. Of course it’ll be complicated. That’s exactly why I’m writing the standard down now, before I need an excuse.

Maybe power changes me too. It probably does. It changes almost everyone. That’s why I’m writing this now, before it can.

I’m 22.

What do I actually know about holding real power over people? Not much.

But I know this much: don’t ask me what kind of leader I think I am. Ask the lowest-ranking person who ever worked for me. If I’m always the smartest person in my own organization, I hired badly. If I’m still indispensable twenty years in, I built badly. I don’t want followers. I want successors.

We beat the British Empire. We learned to fly. We helped beat fascism on two oceans at the same fucking time. We built an industrial machine powerful enough to arm half the free world. We split the atom. We looked up at the Moon, decided human beings should walk on it, employed hundreds of thousands of Americans to figure out how, and then actually fucking did it. We outlasted the Soviet Union. We sent robots to other planets.

You cannot convince me the country that did all of that is incapable of finding 435 competent adults to govern it.

Find me 435 competent adults.

Countries don’t wake up one morning and decide, “Oh, it’s time to decline.” They tolerate one thing, then another, until nobody remembers there was a higher standard. That’s the version of American decline I’m actually afraid of.

Renewal runs the same way in reverse.

Eventually every politician I’ve complained about this year will be gone, and my generation won’t have them left to blame. We’re going to fuck things up too, probably in ways I can’t even imagine yet.

Human nature doesn’t skip a generation.

I still want America to be number one. I want us to earn the number, not just say it louder than everyone else. Fifty years is basically my holding period. I’m long America. Long the kid building something in his garage right now. Long the scientist nobody’s heard of yet. Long the 19-year-old staffer who might someday run the place, if we let her. Long people I will never meet doing things I’m not smart enough to imagine.

I want to be 72 somewhere under fireworks on July 4, 2076, probably still checking election results I promised everyone I’d stop checking. God willing, I’ll be there. Somewhere that night, another 22-year-old will be looking at whatever country my generation hands them. I want them to have different problems than this, because we solved some of ours.

Maybe that’s why this shit bothers me so much. I don’t think America is finished. I think we’re barely getting started.

I don’t expect perfect leaders. I expect adults.

We have serious problems.

We have extraordinary people.

Find them.

Develop them.

Protect them.

Let them surpass us.

We have 340 million people.

Find better ones.

They put stickers on gas pumps as if that was going to change anything. They posted gas prices every week like they had just earned a doctorate in crude oil. They acted as if the president personally owned every gas station and was responsible for each expensive gallon.

Then came the standard that mattered far more.

They also demanded that President Biden “say their names” whenever American service members were killed. And to be fair, for once I believed that standard was actually a fair one.

Presidents should always be forced to face the human consequences of the decisions made under their command.

Donald Trump Is President Now

Regular gas is above four dollars nationally.
Americans are paying more because of a war Trump chose to enter and has chosen repeatedly to escalate.

Eighteen American service members are now dead. Hundreds more have been wounded. Those families are grieving just as much as the families Republicans demanded we remember a few short years ago.

Now those same people have discovered global oil markets, military complexity, and operational security. It’s truly amazing how quickly nuance appears when their guy is the one failing.

Here lies the hypocrisy:

Rep. Mike Bost: blamed “extreme liberals” for gas prices in a 2022 election ad, when the national average sat at approximately $3.88. This spring, with average national prices above $4.00, he told reporters that the administration would sort it out in short order.

That was months ago. Americans are still paying for it.

Rep. Mike Lawler: stated that prices had “gone through the roof” in an October 2024 ad, when the average was $3.19, that is 80 cents less than today.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who built his 2024 campaign around “gas, groceries, and grandkids,” told a constituent complaining about prices this spring: “I don’t recall you complaining when gas was $5.00 under Biden.”

The hypocrisy is crystal clear, America:

Some will say “this is different”, implying that a war economy isn’t ordinary inflation, and that a president shouldn’t have to answer for an oil shock he didn’t create. I agree. That argument would hold up strong if Trump had inherited this war in Iran the way Biden inherited the invasion of Ukraine, which he didn’t order.

He didn’t. He started this one.

Every escalation since has been his call. A president doesn’t get to plead helplessness against an economy he set on fire himself.

You do not get to make gas prices a presidential responsibility only when a Democrat is president.

You do not get to demand that one president “say their names” and then become silent when the deaths belong to your president’s war. Your principles do not get a day off because your party won. If accountability only matters when the other side is in power, then you never actually believed in accountability.

Truths I Learned This Year

• America is extraordinarily wealthy, but Americans are becoming increasingly economically insecure.

• The cost of living has become the defining crisis of modern American life.

• The 2020s are just the 1970s 2.0.

• A country that claims to value families should stop making having children financially impossible for most of its citizens.

• A serious nation builds its infrastructure for the future instead of managing decline.

This episode: Every insurgency eventually has to answer the same question: who is it really for?

The house is worth more than $600,000. The people living inside it may never own it.

This is the current political economy of Colorado’s First District, and it isn’t unique to Colorado.

Nearly three-fifths of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The median household takes in almost $95,000. That is not enough. Professional, scientific, and technical services form the district’s largest industry.

A majority of households still rent.

More than 80,000 of the district’s residents live below the poverty line. Nine percent still lack health insurance, in 2026, in a district built almost entirely around white-collar work.

Homeownership remains below 49 percent.

Then Democratic primary voters nominated a twenty-nine-year-old democratic socialist.

Try to picture one of the voters who made that possible for a moment.

She has a graduate degree, a professional job, and a landlord. Her salary sounds like success to her parents. Her rent feels like failure every time it leaves her bank account.

It weighs on her. Every day.

She lives near homes she probably will never own and she tries to vote for candidates promising to change the bargain that placed her there.

She does not represent every Kiros voter. No single statistic tells us who voted for Melat Kiros.

Together, the numbers clearly describe a district where professional success, visible wealth, renting, poverty, and political insurgency walk the same streets.

The Contradiction

This new coalition has grown from a generation which grew up during economic crisis and became educated enough to enter the professional economy just like it was told, yet has been increasingly unable to secure the homeownership, economic benefits, and durable stability that the same professional employment once promised.

They are forced to live amongst wealth while knowing they will statistically never be able to possess much of it.

Their insecurity is real. Their relative advantage can also be considered real. The young movement’s future depends on whether its constituents can acknowledge that both exist.

Credentials may still open the door.

They no longer reliably guarantee ownership of what lies behind it.

Four Different Advantages

Class becomes difficult to measure when different kinds of lifestyle advantages are treated as though they all mean the exact same thing.

Income measures what arrives in your bank account after work. Wealth measures what is allowed to grow after expenses. Education measures your credentials. Institutional access measures your ability to make the credential matter in your life.

The growing upscale insurgency coalition performs exceptionally well among people who often possess the first, overwhelmingly possess the third, understand the fourth, and yet remain increasingly uncertain about how they will achieve the second.

For a visual example: A renter earning $135,000 a year in New York may have more income than a homeowner earning $65,000 in a midwestern town. The homeowner still possesses an asset that can appreciate and whose monthly cost no landlord can suddenly raise.

One of the Americans has a larger paycheck. The other owns the ground beneath their feet.

The Closer Test

New York’s recent primary returns can be examined precinct by precinct, which makes them the sharper evidence of the growing upscale coalition.

A precinct group with high college attainment is exactly what it sounds like: a set of election districts where a large share of adult residents hold degrees.

It does not identify how any individual resident voted. That limit applies to every figure below.

In the NY-7 precinct group with the highest college-attainment rates, Claire Valdez’s margin reached 36.4 points. In the highest-income precinct, her margin reached 33.7 points. However, in the lowest-income group, Antonio Reynoso led by 32.1 points.

In NY-13, Darializa Avila Chevalier’s margin in the highest college-attainment precinct group reached around 20 points. In the highest-income group, 5.1 points. Adriano Espaillat led the lowest-income group by approximately 9.1 points.

This evidence shows the pattern appears to hold in a poorer district further from the frontier of Manhattan’s gentrification frontlines, although at reduced intensity.

Individual-level survey data points the same direction. A Pew survey from January 2026 found approximately 41 percent of college-educated Democrats view democratic-socialist politicians favorably, against just 26 percent of Democrats without a degree.

In that same poll, upper-income Democrats came in at 40 percent, and lower-income Democrats at 24 percent.

This survey measures people rather than places, and it aligns with the precinct maps.

But precinct groups and national polls still only describe averages. What they can’t show is who actually showed up inside those numbers.

The Coalition on the Ground

Michael Lange’s ecological estimates, modeled from the 2026 voter file rather than residential Census data, complicate the simplest reading of those numbers.

Chevalier won an estimated plurality of Black voters in NY-13 and carried Black voters under 50 by an estimated eleven points. Valdez won estimated support across every racial group and age bracket in NY-7.

Both districts contain working-class voters of every race who chose the insurgent. The clearest break runs through institutions and generations.

Race alone does not fully explain it.

This was not primarily the coalition that built the old Harlem machine, sustained the traditional labor establishment, or anchored the working-class Democratic coalition of the twentieth century. They are younger, predominantly renters, college graduates, and professionals living on city blocks whose wealth they could see but increasingly could not imagine owning.

If that is who the voters were, the next question is who built the organization waiting to receive them.

Inside the Movement

DSA’s 2021 national member survey was sent to approximately 95,000 members and received 12,971 responses. The DSA itself cautioned that the respondents of the poll skewed toward the members most active inside the organization.

The numbers still tell us part of the story.

More than four in five members over 25 held at least a bachelor’s degree. More than one in three held an advanced degree. Nearly half reported household income below $60,000. More than one in four reported at least $100,000. Median household income fell between $60,000 and $80,000. The median age was 33 years old.

The survey describes a growing coalition more complicated than either its biggest defenders or its loudest critics care to admit. DSA draws heavily from the professional class without drawing from one income class. Its members share education levels more consistently than they share income or race.

They believe work should come with more power over the institutions that govern it.

Their critics hear a professional class describing its own frustrations in universal language.

Both descriptions contain evidence.

Neither one settles what the movement owes the people standing outside it.

The Privilege It Cannot Deny

Economic insecurity does not erase relative advantage.

A graduate degree remains valuable. A professional salary creates choices unavailable to a low-wage worker. Flexible schedules, institutional vocabulary, donor networks, political contacts, and proximity to journalists and organizers make political participation easier.

The ability to experience a broken bargain and the ability to organize around it are distributed unevenly. That is why the movement’s public face is more credentialed than the generation whose insecurity produced it.

Which raises the obligation that comes with that visibility.

A coalition cannot ever claim to speak for the working class while it continues treating disagreement from working-class voters as ignorance, manipulation, or moral failure.

The movement still must be able to speak to the nurse without a graduate degree, the construction worker without a nonprofit network, the small-business employee worried about rising prices, the parent focused on public safety, and the homeowner whose entire wealth sits inside one aging house.

None of those people are confused about their interests. Several have simply concluded that this growing movement is not talking to them.

The Neighborhoods

Real median rent rose 102.3 percent in Greenpoint and Williamsburg between 2006 and 2024.

This isn’t just a one neighborhood trend. Bushwick rose 93.8 percent.

Central Harlem rose 52.5 percent.

Harlem shows the most concrete version of the whole story. In Central Harlem, the largest income bracket in 2000 earned $20,000 or less. By 2024, the largest bracket earned between $100,001 and $250,000. Through all of it, 26.7 percent of the neighborhood stayed below the poverty line and 29.3 percent of renter households paid more than half their income in rent.

Affluence, poverty, and credentialed newcomers now coexist on the same New York City blocks.

Denver ran the same transformation at city scale. Rent rose 77 percent between 2010 and 2019. Home values rose 79 percent. Household income rose 32 percent. By 2019, nearly 59,000 households were cost-burdened and close to 52,000 severely cost-burdened.

Both cities reveal a similar finding.

Gentrification is increasingly placing several class systems on the same city block. One resident owns the building whose value doubled. Another rents the apartment whose cost doubled. A third cleans the office where the second works. They share a ZIP code and experience the same economy as three different events.

Precinct averages compress their differences. Politics eventually reveals them.

The growing coalition performs best in places where professional opportunity and asset exclusion meet. Its voters may earn enough to remain near wealth while owning too little to feel truly protected by it.

That same divide, between who organizes and who simply lives somewhere, runs straight through organized labor.

The Labor Split

In NY-7, Reynoso carried District Council 37, representing roughly 150,000 workers and 89,000 retirees, along with RWDSU, the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, and the Working Families Party.

The growing coalition did not go without labor entirely. Valdez carried the UAW and AFA-CWA. She had previously been a UAW organizer and unit chair before she ran.

The same split repeats one district over.

In NY-13, Espaillat carried DC37 and RWDSU. Chevalier, a UAW member, carried the UAW. Region 9A celebrated both women as union members heading to Congress.

The same pattern appearing in two adjacent races is unlikely to be accidental.

This is the difference in what each side of labor thinks a union is for. Some unions enter politics to preserve bargaining relationships, protect contracts, and maintain access to officeholders. Others treat campaigns as an extension of organizing. The disagreement is partly ideological and also a disagreement about what political power is for.

One side sees electoral politics as a relationship to manage. The other sees it as another workplace to organize.

That same fault line, old institutions against a newer theory of power, is not new to American politics.

It has a distinct name and a history.

The Brahmin Left

Amory Gethin, Clara Martínez-Toledano, and Thomas Piketty analyzed over 300 elections across 21 Western democracies between the years 1948 and 2020.

What they found reshapes how this whole episode should be read. Left-wing parties, which once were supported disproportionately by low-education and low-income voters, gradually over the years have become the parties of the highly educated. High-income voters stayed comparatively aligned with the right-wing.

The researchers described this as the Brahmin Left, set against the Merchant Right.

That study explains why education moved left. It does not yet fully explain New York or the growing DSA coalition.

Here is where the 2026 races depart from the historical pattern. In these races, education and income sometimes moved in the same exact insurgency direction. This may identify a newer urban coalition: high earners without high wealth, professionals without ownership, and institutional insiders without institutional loyalty.

The old Brahmin Left was accused of trading true economic redistribution for cultural politics. This insurgency is trying to use the Brahmin electorate to restore economic redistribution.

Whether voters outside that electorate believe the distinction is a separate question.

That distinction only matters if the movement can actually act on it. A professional-class coalition can demand genuine redistribution. It can also design redistribution around only the problems it knows best.

Student debt, rent, childcare, public transit, and professional precarity are real class issues.

So are wages, energy costs, public safety, occupational licensing, manufacturing decline, small-business survival, and the dignity of work that does not require a degree.

A national movement must hear out both lists.

The obvious historical parallel turns out to be the wrong one. George McGovern’s 1972 coalition is the comparison people reach for, and it fits worse than it appears. McGovern took 37 percent among college-educated voters, 43 percent among manual workers, and 49 percent among voters with only a grade-school education.

He is a precedent for how activists may capture a party’s machinery. He should not be treated as a precedent for this electorate.

Whether this specific version of the pattern holds, or eventually cracks under its own contradictions, is not a question the historical record can answer. It is only a question about what happens next.

Three Forecasts

The Class Challenge — 65 percent. By 2030, a nationally visible organization, caucus, or candidate network emerges from inside the insurgent left and explicitly challenges the movement’s professional-class leadership, language, or priorities. The challenge must produce a contested federal primary, a formal organizational split, or a published platform centered on occupation, income, or union representation. A movement organized around class will eventually be asked to describe its own.

That question about internal representation is only the first test. The second is whether the movement’s existing allies stay allies.

The Left-Labor Compact — 45 percent. By 2032, at least three national or multistate unions endorse candidates from the DSA-Justice Democrats pipeline in at least five federal races across two consecutive election cycles. The movement has built candidates. Labor has built durable institutions. Neither has proved it can operate through the other.

If the first two forecasts test what happens inside the coalition, the third tests what happens outside its home turf entirely.

The Statewide Test — 35 percent. By 2032, an insurgent candidate wins a statewide Democratic primary in a competitive or politically mixed state while drawing substantial support outside the state’s largest highly educated urban counties.

Each forecast tests the same underlying question from a different angle: whether the coalition can become something larger than the districts that built it.

What the Map Will Tell Us

The upscale insurgency has already proved that educated urban voters can overthrow the Democratic establishment.

That was the easier test.

The harder one begins after that victory.

Can a movement led disproportionately by professionals understand forms of insecurity that do not sound like its own? 

Can it build with unions whose members may share its economic goals and reject parts of its cultural language?

Can it speak to renters and homeowners, graduates and tradespeople, public employees and small-business workers?

Those questions all collapse into one distinction. A faction needs enough voters in the right districts. A governing coalition has to persuade people who do not recognize themselves in its leadership.

The contradiction is the test. Winning a district proves that the movement exists. Winning a state would prove that it can travel.

Governing would prove that it learned whom it was for. The map will eventually tell us how far it got.

This piece is complete different from the electoral models, institutional analysis, and foreign-policy work that usually runs under this publication, but i can promise you it comes from the EXACT same beliefs.

The Fourth Turning Point has always examined power: I’ve worked on answering who holds it, who designed the institutions that get to distribute it, who gets written into the national story, and what happens when those written out decide to attempt to claim their place.

I am and always will be a feminist.

Women deserve many things including equal dignity, protection, investment, pay, recognition, and ambition. This includes other facts such as: Queer folks belong fully in national life, and beautiful queer families are families. Black and Latina women deserve to be treated as complete leaders and athletes, not just symbols in someone else’s diversity “DEI” paragraph. Motherhood should not end a career.

Equality means enforceable rights, not ceremonial inclusion.

This piece begins with the football because these women built a tournament that needs no pity, apology, or lowered expectations.

“Ugh, we have to wait four more years for another World Cup?”

You don’t have to. The FIFA Women’s World Cup begins June 24, 2027, in Brazil, only 340 days after Spain beat Argentina at MetLife. The flags come back. So do the anthems, the bracket, the penalties, the strangers who become national heroes overnight.

This time the women carry it.

The Same Beautiful Madness

What made the last month so fun had nothing to do with wh9 was on the field. Countries fought for one trophy. A name nobody knew a month earlier became one nobody would forget. A shootout turned grown adults into wrecks. For one month, the tournament gave the world a shared calendar.

Brazil 2027 brings it all back: 32 teams, 64 matches, and eight host cities, including Rio de Janeiro, where the Maracanã will host matches and it will be the first Women’s World Cup held in South America.

Netflix holds exclusive U.S. rights to the 2027 and 2031 tournaments. so every match next summer streams inside an app people already have open, instead of getting buried on a channel nobody thinks to check.

The question of who gets to become the face of a country, whose name ends up on a mural somewhere, shouldn’t depend on gender.

The Fútbol Can Speak for Itself

The 2023 tournament backed this up in the results, not just the style. Colombia beat Germany and reached the quarterfinals. Morocco advanced in its tournament debut. Nigeria went unbeaten through the group stage. Teams from all six confederations won at least once, and the old hierarchy started looking less stable than it had in decades.

Six names worth learning before June 24: Aitana Bonmatí, who sees a pass developing before the defense even understands the danger. Linda Caicedo, Colombia’s 21-year-old Real Madrid winger, who plays like she’s daring the pressure to get to her first. Naomi Girma, whose positioning makes danger disappear before most people in the stadium notice it was there. Trinity Rodman, who can turn a broken possession into a goal out of nowhere. Barbra Banda, a striker good enough that opposing defenses build their whole shape around stopping her. And Marta, 40 years old and still creating chances, who might get one last World Cup on home soil.

Maybe the Men Are Their Equivalents

Comparisons help new viewers get oriented, so they are a fair place to start. Bonmatí controls a match like the great men’s midfielders. Banda bends defenses around her like the most feared strikers. Girma reads attacks with the calm usually reserved for celebrated men’s center backs.

The comparison expires quickly.

Bonmatí is not the female version of anyone. Caicedo is not Colombia’s answer to a man who plays her position.

In a few years, some fearless young male winger emerging from an academy might be compared to her.

They Had to Build the Field While Playing on It

None of this depth arrived by default.

By 1921, England had roughly 150 women’s football clubs, and matches drew crowds of up to 45,000. That December, the Football Association barred women from affiliated grounds⁠, forcing a thriving game onto smaller fields for nearly fifty years.

The first official Women’s World Cup arrived in 1991, seventy years later.

Institutions had spent decades forcing women’s football out of the stadiums it had already begun to fill.

Institutions called exclusion tradition and suppression protection. Decades later, they treated the resulting gap as proof that women lacked interest or talent.

The fight for professional standards remains recent. A FIFPRO survey⁠ of 260 players from 26 national teams found that 30 percent earned under $30,000 from club and national-team football combined. Twenty-one percent worked outside football. Ten percent received no pre-tournament medical examination, 22 percent received no electrocardiogram, and 60 percent said mental-health support needed improvement.

Feminism in sport means material rights: enforceable contracts, professional medical standards, safe travel, transparent pay, maternity protection, safeguards against abusive coaches, and recognition of the families these women have.

These are baseline conditions that the highest levels of men’s football have treated as ordinary for decades.

No One Disappears Inside the Jersey

A player should not have to become less herself to become a national hero.

A national team answers questions every country asks: Who represents us? Whose face appears on the mural? Whose name does the next generation learn? Whose family counts as part of national life?

Naomi Girma answers as a Black defender, a leader, and a mental-health advocate, all at once. Linda Caicedo answers as a Black Colombian woman whose football made her a global symbol.

Women’s football is one of professional sport’s most visible spaces for openly queer athletes. Outsports identified⁠ at least 78 publicly out LGBTQ players at Euro 2025, more than one in five. Its count for the 2026 men’s World Cup⁠ found none publicly out as gay or bisexual.

A flag belongs to queer citizens too. A jersey does not become less national because a woman loves another woman.

Equality must include family. FIFA expanded its protections⁠ in 2024 to adoptive parents and the partners of mothers in same-sex relationships.

Visibility without protection is exposure.

At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, FIFA and FIFPRO found⁠ that 152 players, roughly one in five monitored, received discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages. The abuse included homophobia, sexism, sexualized harassment, and racism.

The same visibility that creates national heroes exposes women to people determined to punish them for being seen.

The Country That Banned Them Will Host Them

From 1941 to 1979, Brazil barred women from organized football⁠. The state did more than withhold investment. It declared women incompatible with the game at the center of Brazilian national life.

In 2027, their successors will enter Brazil’s largest stadiums for the first Women’s World Cup held in South America⁠. That is historical reversal.

Colombia shows what happens when women receive the stage. Its 2023 team, driven by Linda Caicedo and a rising generation around her, reached the quarterfinals. Its opening match drew 9.1 million Colombian viewers⁠, more than triple the country’s previous Women’s World Cup record.

Colombians did not need convincing. They needed a team worth believing in and a broadcast that put it before them.

The same demand appeared in New York during the men’s World Cup summer. A crowd of 42,175 filled Citi Field⁠ for Gotham FC against the Washington Spirit, setting a New York City record for a women’s sporting event.

The claim that nobody wants to watch gets harder to defend every time women receive a stage large enough to hold the crowd that arrives.

Give Them Ninety Minutes

Save June 24. Pick a team. Learn one name. Watch one match.

Generations of women carried this game through federation bans, second jobs, inadequate medical care, institutional indifference, and abuse while being told nobody cared.

They don’t need charity. They don’t need comparison. They don’t need permission.

They have the fútbol, the stars, the flags, and the stage.

They did the rest. Now watch.

Why I Used My Platform for This

My usual work covers elections, institutions, and democratic pressure. I built this platform believing attention is a resource. I do not want to spend all of it on powerful men, election cycles, and crises.

Some belongs to the women who played before crowds arrived, worked second jobs, endured institutional neglect and abuse, represented their countries without hiding whom they loved, and fought so the next player would inherit something better.

I am a feminist. That means equal dignity, protection, investment, and recognition. Motherhood should not end a career. Queer love and queer families belong fully in public life. Tolerance without material rights is not equality.

Women’s football did not need me to build it. Women already did that, against institutions that spent a century telling them not to bother.

I can take it seriously. I can ask you to watch.

The Model Missed the Name

My July 12 appointment model placed Pamela Evette first at 27% and Joe Wilson second at 18%. Darline Graham was absent.

McMaster appointed her anyway.

That is a genuine miss.

The model identified the shape of McMaster’s choice: someone who would preserve the congressional delegation and receive Trump’s approval. It failed to anticipate family continuity/nepotism until Trump publicly suggested it.

Wilson, once a serious contender, is now out.

The Poll Caught Darline Before Trump Defined Her

Emerson College Polling and Nexstar surveyed 500 likely Republican primary voters from July 14 to 15, before Trump endorsed Darline and Norman entered.

No candidate led decisively.

Norman received 16.4%, Lynch 12.5%, Mace 10.1%, Evette 9.9%, Fry 9.4%, McMaster 7.7%, Darline Graham 5.9%, Sanford 5.4%, and someone else 4.8%. Another 17.9% were undecided.

Darline’s 5.9% primarily measured low awareness.

Thirty-nine percent were unsure how they viewed her. Seventeen percent had never heard of her. The poll began the day she was sworn in and ended before Trump’s endorsement.

The endorsement has room to move voters, but its reach is limited. Forty-one percent said Trump’s support would make them more likely to back a candidate. The same share said it would make no difference. Nineteen percent said it would make them less likely.

Trump Endorsed Her. Norman Entered Anyway.

By the weekend, the poll described a race that had already changed.

July 17: Trump endorsed Darline Graham, called her a “WINNER,” and urged, “RUN, DARLINE, RUN.”

Darline sent supporters a soft-launch letter: “Now, it’s time for me to step up for South Carolina, just like he stepped up for me when our parents died.”

William Timmons endorsed her. Tim Scott praised her and other candidates while remaining neutral.

July 17 and 18: Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and Turning Point Action endorsed Ralph Norman.

July 18: Norman entered on Fox News after seeking Trump’s support and failing to receive it. He said he was “in this to win” and centered his campaign on the SAVE America Act and eliminating the filibuster.

Mark Lynch: Lynch had already entered and pledged another $5 million in personal funds. His Senate account held roughly $1.35 million.

The runoff is effectively a coin flip, with Darline holding a narrow edge.

Three Candidates. Three Sources of Power.

Darline Graham has Trump.

She also has incumbency, the Graham name, and a compressed calendar that rewards recognition. Her weakness is the absence of an established constituency of her own.

Her 5.9% poll result is a pre-endorsement baseline. Reaching a plurality requires a large endorsement effect.

Ralph Norman has an existing political base.

He led the only public poll, entered after Trump endorsed someone else, and secured support from Lee, Scott, and Turning Point Action.

His challenge is direct: persuading Republican voters to reject Trump’s chosen candidate while Trump holds 77% favorability within the state party.

Mark Lynch has votes and money.

He received 28.9% against Lindsey Graham in June and possesses the most immediately deployable money.

His campaign was built around opposing Lindsey Graham. He must now rewrite that message for a race against Graham’s grieving sister while competing with Norman for the anti-establishment vote.

The runoff-qualification probabilities overlap because two candidates advance when no one wins a first-round majority.

November Still Leans Republican

The Model Found the Favorite. It Missed the Machine.

My July 8 model ranked Troy Jackson first at 30%, followed by Shenna Bellows at 22% and Nirav Shah at 21%.

That uncertainty was reasonable before any delegates had been selected. The miss was Jackson’s organizational advantage.

The model found the favorite but underestimated the machine.

Saturday Became the Convention Before the Convention

July 16 debate: Nine candidates participated. Reuters described Shah as the strongest individual performer. Bellows gave an inaccurate foreign-policy answer and acknowledged that she had not expected to be running.

The leading candidates also embraced parts of Platner’s platform. Jackson named Medicare for All. Shah named abolishing ICE.

July 18 caucuses: Saturday’s meetings in eight counties selected 319 of the 500 county delegates. Public reporting identified at least 290 as aligned with Jackson, including a near-sweep of Cumberland County.

Those delegates are formally unpledged and remain free to vote independently.

The qualification matters.

The scale matters more.

Jackson’s geographic reach and organization make him the prohibitive favorite.

The convention requires 301 of 601 votes.

With at least 290 aligned delegates, Jackson needs only 11 more from the 282 convention votes outside Saturday’s count: 181 county delegates selected Sunday and 101 state committee members.

The alignment is powerful but nonbinding. Jackson’s remaining risks are a qualification failure, late scandal, or coordinated delegate movement.

Nirav Shah: 40 delegates, 6.7%

Shenna Bellows: 28 delegates, 4.7%

The Best Debate Did Not Beat the Best Organization

SurveyUSA, in a July 16 poll commissioned by a pro-Shah group, found Shah leading Collins 47% to 44%.

Jackson led Collins 45% to 44%. Bellows tied her at 45%. Collins led Wood 44% to 41% and Kleban 47% to 37%.

Shah produced the strongest debate and polling result. He secured only five identified aligned delegates among the first 319. Bellows and Wood secured two each.

The convention rewards organization, and Jackson built the strongest one.

The General Election Remains Separate

Predicted vote: Jackson 49.4%, Collins 48.2%, other 2.4%

Rating: Toss-up, slight Democratic edge

Jackson’s delegate dominance nearly settles the nomination. November remains uncertain.

The 55% forecast reflects Maine’s political environment and Jackson’s narrow SurveyUSA lead. The poll offers a modest signal because a pro-Shah group commissioned it and Collins has repeatedly outperformed public polling.

The Biddeford shooting adds volatility. Collins’s call to suspend nonurgent ICE vehicle stops may strengthen her independent image. Trump’s rebuke may weaken her claim of influence within the Republican Party.

Collins also has powerful counterevidence. She won by nearly nine points in 2020 while Maine backed Biden by a similar margin. Public polling underestimated her throughout that race.

A one-point Jackson lead must be read against that history.

After the convention, Jackson will have slightly more than 100 days to build a federal campaign against an incumbent holding roughly $9.7 million in cash.

His support for Medicare for All, eliminating ICE, and ending US military aid to Israel gives Collins clear lines of attack. His debate performance also lacked the movement-generating quality that briefly made Platner a national figure.

Jackson is almost certain to win the convention. Winning Maine will be much harder.

The Power Moved Before Most Voters Noticed

Compressed calendars magnify existing power.

In South Carolina, that power is divided. Darline has Trump’s endorsement. Norman has a political base. Lynch has money.

In Maine, the decisive advantage concentrated in one place. Jackson’s organization overwhelmed Shah’s stronger debate and general-election polling before most voters noticed.

The nomination contests say little about November.

South Carolina remains a clear Republican advantage regardless of the nominee. The model gives the GOP an 82% probability of holding the seat.

Maine remains a toss-up. The next 100 days will test paid media, national conditions, and Collins’s crossover appeal in a Trump-defined environment made more volatile by the Biddeford shooting.

South Carolina’s machinery is divided. Maine’s belongs to Troy Jackson.

This update incorporates the July 16 Emerson/Nexstar poll, Trump’s endorsement of Darline Graham, Norman’s candidacy, the July 16 Maine debate, and Saturday’s caucus results.

He still used the White House to frighten Americans about their votes with evidence that did not support his implications.

The Verdict, Claim by Claim

Thursday reached category three: a relevant vulnerability without demonstrated exploitation. I assigned it a 25 percent probability.

Nothing released established attempted exploitation of a relevant voting-system vulnerability, successful penetration, altered election data, or a changed result in the 2020 US election.

China acquired voter data.

The records describe data obtained through several means, including public and commercial sources. The White House reached 220 million records by combining datasets from different years without establishing 220 million unique victims.

No document identifies an altered registration, ballot, or vote.

One document identifies Biden’s campaign as the target.

It says Chinese actors targeted Biden’s campaign for intelligence collection and that China did not then intend to interfere covertly to sway the election.

Georgia’s machine vulnerability is genuine.

CISA documented a barcode flaw in Georgia’s ImageCast X system. Georgia’s hand audit of roughly five million ballots still confirmed the machine-tabulated winner.

The Venezuela material does not establish interference in an American election.

The CIA note does not confirm that Venezuela’s alleged plan was executed. The March 2021 assessment found no information that Venezuela attempted to compromise US election infrastructure.

Michigan found fraudulent applications, not fraudulent votes.

The FBI’s closing memorandum found no prosecutable federal offense, no evidence that the organization directed the fabrication, and no fraudulent ballot or changed vote.

The noncitizen figure remains unsupported.

DHS provides no methodology or error rate for its 278,000 figure. Its separate deceased-voter figure reflects automated matches requiring verification, not confirmed registrations or ballots.

Ratcliffe’s dissent reached the same technical conclusion as the majority:

There was no information that China interfered with election processes.

The Reaction Exposed How Little He Proved

Election officials from both parties rejected the leap from vulnerability to stolen election.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson called the speech a rehash of conspiracy theories. Stephen Richer, the Republican former Maricopa County recorder, emphasized that paper ballots and hand counts would expose electronic manipulation.

Retired intelligence officers warned that selective declassification was politicizing their profession.

The Political Target Was Here at Home

Trump assembled separate fragments to support policies he had already demanded, including restrictions on mail voting and new federal mandates.

At the same time, his administration has reduced federal election-security work designed to address the genuine cyberthreats described in his speech.

Trump then called for the revocation of broadcast licenses associated with ABC and NBC because the networks declined to carry his address.

That was a demand for government retaliation against news organizations over an editorial decision.

The Worst Did Not Happen. The Fight Remains.

Trump did not cancel the midterms, seize state elections, or declare Georgia’s senators illegitimate.

He also did not prove that his loss was fraudulent.

The constitutional means of defeating what comes next remain intact: courts, Congress, state governments, a free press, and the ballot box.

November still belongs to the voters.

An America where Black voters, Hispanic voters, Asian voters, gay voters, women determined to lead, rural families, naturalized citizens, and Americans across and beyond those lines know that their ballots belong equally to the country.

An America that protects its elections without lying about them.

Trump offered plans, capabilities, vulnerabilities, allegations, and fear.

He produced no evidence of a stolen vote.

The answer is us.

A plan was never a vote. A vulnerability was never a stolen election. Donald Trump is not America. We are.

The first piece traced how Thursday’s speech came to exist: a president who demanded proof of a fraud his own government could not find, and an administration built to keep looking.

This piece says plainly what that means, because I am tired of writing around it.

Donald Trump is the first defeated American president in modern history to turn his refusal to accept a certified result into a sustained campaign against it.

Six years. A rotating list of mechanisms. One conclusion that never moves with the evidence.

Asking millions of Americans to join him in that refusal is authoritarianism with a Truth Social account.

I publish forecasts before outcomes and grade them afterward. I am doing the same here, before Thursday.

If Trump presents evidence proving that foreign actors changed votes, I will say so plainly, regardless of what it costs me.

Based on everything reported so far, I do not expect the evidence to clear that threshold. If it falls short, I will say that too.

What My Generation Actually Inherited

My generation watched the government find hundreds of billions of dollars overnight to save the financial system in 2008 while families down the street lost their homes and never fully recovered.

The financial system got a bailout. Household balance sheets got a decade of scar tissue.

From that wreckage came two men promising to fix a rigged system from opposite ends of American politics.

Bernie Sanders blamed concentrated wealth and a captured government. Donald Trump blamed everyone except himself and eventually asked people to trust him instead of any institution at all.

For many of us the economy finally began to feel normal again. Then COVID hit.

Public-health authorities, political leaders, and government institutions issued changing and sometimes contradictory guidance in full view of the country.

Inflation consumed the recovery. Rent and mortgage rates moved further out of reach. Many people my age now face a real possibility of never owning a home despite doing everything asked of them.

Neither party produced an explanation or response that felt adequate to the people paying higher prices.

Then came January 6.

In 2000, a genuinely disputed election moved through recount litigation and the Supreme Court. Gore conceded after the Court ended the recount, despite believing its decision was wrong.

In 2020 and 2021, Trump pursued a multipronged campaign to overturn the result that culminated in the attack on the Capitol. The years that followed brought prosecutions, civil litigation, and eventually his return to power promising retribution against those who held him accountable.

I understand exactly why people my age distrust institutions. I lived through the same disappointments.

What I refuse to do is take that legitimate, earned distrust and hand it to a man who demands a version of reality organized around his own innocence and invincibility. Six corporate bankruptcies become evidence of business genius. A civil fraud finding becomes persecution. A 34-count felony conviction becomes proof of a rigged system. A jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll becomes another reason to attack her. His documented association with Jeffrey Epstein deserves scrutiny, though association alone does not establish guilt. That is the type of evidentiary restraint Trump refuses to extend to anyone else.

Institutional failure taught my generation to question authority.

It should also teach us to question the man demanding that we trust him above every institution, every certified result, every jury, and every fact that tells him no.

This Is What a Political Cult Looks Like

I am using that word precisely, as an analytical description.

A political cult can grow from real grievances, real institutional failures, and real people who were hurt without receiving an apology. A leader gathers those grievances and reorganizes them around himself.

His victories prove the people spoke. His defeats prove the system cheated. Investigation becomes persecution. Conviction becomes proof that the conspiracy runs deeper.

No outcome can count as evidence against him because the structure was built to protect one man from ever having to be wrong.

The chronology makes this harder to dismiss as ordinary post-election suspicion.

Before Election Day, Trump was already predicting fraud and laying the groundwork to reject mail ballots. Steve Bannon said Trump would declare victory before those ballots could be counted. The January 6 Committee later concluded that Trump’s false election-night declaration was premeditated.

While millions of lawful ballots were still being counted, Trump called the election a fraud.

The allegation preceded the evidence. It was waiting for an outcome Trump refused to accept.

The political infrastructure followed the same chronology. Stop the Steal organizers began building digital mobilization networks before the result was certified and organized protests at state capitols while counting, recounts, and litigation continued.

That preparation leaves every later allegation to be judged on its evidence. It also establishes that the movement was prepared to declare a stolen election before possessing evidence of one.

The fixed conclusion became profitable.

The January 6 Committee found that Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee raised more than $250 million through post-election appeals built around claims of fraud. The solicitations included requests for an “Official Election Defense Fund” that did not exist.

Six years produced a rotating list of explanations for the same loss: mail ballots and Dominion, Georgia election workers, Chávez and Italian satellites, 2000 Mules, the Twitter Files, and now alleged foreign interference through voting machines.

The intelligence record assessed in 2021 is being reopened by an administration openly seeking a different answer.

An investigation allows evidence to change the conclusion. A cult protects the conclusion by changing the explanation.

Saying this has cost me friendships and relationships. People I have known my entire life treat it as betrayal.

I have made peace with that cost.

Silence carries a greater one.

We have already witnessed one attempt to override a certified election through force. We cannot assume the constitutional system will survive every attempt simply because it survived the first.

The Six Missing Links

None of this relieves me of the obligation to be precise. Precision is the point of The Fourth Turning Point.

Foreign influence in 2020 is the established starting point. On Thursday, Trump must prove every link beyond it:

1. Operational planning extending beyond propaganda.

2. A relevant vulnerability in equipment actually used during the election.

3. Attempted exploitation of that vulnerability.

4. Successful penetration of the relevant election system.

5. Demonstrable alteration of registration data, ballots, tabulation, or vote totals.

6. Enough altered votes to reverse the certified result.

In finance, a weak password or unverified rumor does not establish fraud. You trace the chain: who had access, what they did, whether the records reconcile, and whether the discrepancy was large enough to matter.

An election deserves at least that much rigor.

Foreign Influence Happened

The government Trump led investigated this question using intelligence collected during his presidency.

The March 2021 Intelligence Community assessment, produced by the National Intelligence Council with contributions from the CIA, DHS, FBI, State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and NSA, found no indication that any foreign actor attempted to alter voter registration, ballot casting, tabulation, or reported results.

A separate joint report from DOJ and DHS, prepared with the FBI and CISA, reached the same conclusion.

Russia and Iran conducted real foreign influence operations. Those operations did not reach the technical election process.

John Ratcliffe, now CIA director, is reportedly expected to participate in Thursday’s presentation. He served as DNI when the underlying intelligence was assessed and issued a dissenting memorandum on January 7, 2021, challenging the majority’s treatment of Chinese influence activity.

His dissent never claimed that China touched a vote or voting machine.

If Thursday’s presentation implies otherwise, Ratcliffe owes the country an explanation of what new evidence emerged between January 2021 and this week.

From Voter Data to Voting Systems: The Missing Link

CBS News reports that Trump is expected to allege that China “compromised U.S. voter data” and that the CIA possessed evidence it withheld from him during his first term.

Those are anonymously sourced descriptions of an unfinished speech. They are not established findings.

Reuters independently reports that the administration is considering releasing intelligence about China’s intent or capability to interfere. Its sources said the intelligence does not show that China manipulated or changed votes.

The reported allegation may involve information obtained online. That would be distinct from unauthorized entry into a government election system. Two former officials told Reuters that the intelligence community largely concluded China had not entered US voter systems.

That distinction matters.

Voter information may be available through state records, political vendors, commercial databases, or data brokers. Acquiring it could support espionage, targeting, or an influence campaign.

Claims involving registration databases, altered voter records, penetrated machines, changed ballots, or manipulated totals require separate evidence.

Reuters also reports that the China intelligence was reviewed during the government’s original assessment of the 2020 election.

Thursday’s presentation must therefore establish what the CIA allegedly withheld from Trump personally, whether it was excluded from the completed assessment, and whether it changes the assessment’s technical conclusion.

A Vulnerability Is Only the Second Link

Puerto Rico provides the clearest test of this distinction. The territory does not participate in presidential general elections.

Machines examined there reportedly contained genuine technical weaknesses. The forensic review found no evidence of hacking.

That places the finding at link two: a vulnerability without demonstrated exploitation, penetration, or alteration.

A genuine vulnerability should be corrected. Thursday’s presentation should establish when officials discovered it, which systems share it, whether affected jurisdictions were warned, and what remediation occurred.

Georgia Left a Paper Record

Georgia’s ballots were counted three times: the original machine tabulation, a statewide hand audit, and a subsequent machine recount.

The hand audit independently tested the machine-tabulated result against approximately five million physical ballots. It confirmed the same winner as both machine counts.

Biden’s certified margin was 11,779 votes.

On January 2, 2021, Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and said, “I just want to find 11,780 votes,” exactly one more than Biden’s margin.

Georgia’s Republican officials defended the certified result under direct pressure from Trump to reverse it.

Any claim of outcome-changing electronic manipulation must explain why a statewide hand audit of the physical ballots independently produced the same winner.

The Previous Claims Already Met Scrutiny

The conservative-authored Lost, Not Stolen report examined 64 cases brought by Trump and his supporters across six battleground states.

Thirty received a hearing on the merits. Twenty ended before a merits hearing. Fourteen were voluntarily dismissed.

Their sole victory concerned a Pennsylvania identification deadline and involved too few ballots to affect the result. None established outcome-changing fraud.

In December 2020, Attorney General William Barr told the Associated Press that DOJ had found no fraud on a scale capable of changing the outcome. He announced his resignation less than two weeks later.

The claims also produced civil consequences.

Fox paid Dominion $787.5 million in a pretrial settlement after the court ruled that the challenged claims about Dominion were false.

Rudy Giuliani stipulated, for purposes of their lawsuit, that his accusations against Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss were false. A jury awarded them $148 million.

Thursday’s evidence deserves a fresh examination. The previous theories remain bound by the records they already produced.

New documents cannot retroactively validate claims that failed under scrutiny.

These probabilities will be graded against the evidence actually released, rather than the administration’s characterization of it.

Evidence of foreign influence already incorporated into the 2021 assessment remains in the first category unless Thursday’s presentation establishes a new link in the chain.

What I Need to See Thursday

I need a named foreign actor tied to a specific operation extending beyond the influence campaigns already documented.

I need an identified system in an identified jurisdiction that was actually used in the election at issue.

I need evidence of attempted exploitation and successful access, rather than a theoretical capability.

I need demonstrable alteration of election data, reconciled against the available paper record and independent audits.

I need enough altered votes to reverse a certified outcome.

If the alleged compromise involved publicly or commercially available voter information, Trump must explain how obtaining a copy establishes entry into or alteration of an election system.

Without all six links, Thursday is the same man running the same play, with better production values and weaker guardrails than he had the first time.

The Republican Line I Will Not Cross

I grew up Republican. I still am. I am no longer certain the party is.

I am writing this as someone who watched his own party decide that loyalty to one man’s ego mattered more than loyalty to the Constitution it swore to defend.

I refuse to accept that as conservatism merely because the people doing it still call themselves Republicans.

Party loyalty has limits. Country does not.

I want a government capable enough to detect a real foreign attack and honest enough to admit when the evidence falls short.

I want a country that still believes losing an election means something.

Trump’s burden Thursday goes far beyond proving that foreign governments hold opinions about American elections. Everyone already knows they do.

His burden is to prove that the people who voted him out did not actually decide the outcome.

He has failed to do that across six years of changing theories, repeated audits, and legal challenges. I do not expect Thursday to change that record.

Trump’s first effort to overturn the election failed in part because officials inside his own government refused to carry his preferred conclusion beyond the evidence.

Tomorrow’s piece will examine those officials, the pressure they resisted, and what changed when Trump returned determined to prevent that resistance from happening again.

The voters decide whether a president lost. The president does not decide whether their votes counted.

This is the first installment of The Second Campaign Against the Vote, a new Fourth Turning Point series tracking how Trump’s administration is using federal institutions to revisit the election he lost and what that machinery could mean for the next one.

I started The Fourth Turning Point to study institutions under pressure and put warnings on record before the outcome becomes obvious.

Free elections, constitutional government, the rule of law, and the peaceful transfer of power belong to neither party. They are the terms under which either party gets to govern at all.

Donald Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election after the American people voted him out. The MAGA faction that defended him chose loyalty to one man over loyalty to the Constitution.

Thursday’s evidence will still be examined on its merits. If the administration produces genuine evidence of a foreign attack on American voting systems, it should be investigated, exposed, and corrected.

Authentic documents will not be allowed to carry conclusions they do not support. National-security language will not be treated as a substitute for evidence.

A republic cannot survive if every defeat becomes fraud, every opponent becomes illegitimate, and every presidential grievance can be converted into an official finding of the United States government.

The Countdown to Nine

Confirmed: Trump will speak Thursday at 9 p.m. He has confirmed that voting machines and election integrity will be part of the address.

Trump called the announcement “really, really big news” and said the country “has to shape up.” He has said other subjects will be addressed but has not identified them.

Credibly reported, but not confirmed on the record by the White House: Newly declassified intelligence is expected to be described and may be released. Publication of the underlying documents remains unconfirmed.

The intelligence reportedly concerns foreign influence operations and voting-machine vulnerabilities. One White House official told MS NOW that Ratcliffe, Pulte, Patel, and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin are expected to participate in the rollout. Whether all four will appear with Trump remains unclear.

MS NOW reports that a White House task force has reviewed thousands of intelligence and law-enforcement documents for possible release. Reuters independently confirms the task force’s existence but describes it as recently formed.

Georgia’s 2020 presidential result and Senate runoffs have reportedly been considered for inclusion.

Still unconfirmed: Which countries Trump will name; whether he will claim votes were changed or the outcome altered; whether he will name Ossoff or Warnock; whether he will announce executive action; and whether the underlying documents will be published in full or described secondhand.

The contradiction: The White House is promoting a historic announcement while telling reporters that nobody can say what Trump will ultimately announce because the speech remains unfinished.

Both messages are coming from the same building in the same week.

The Conclusion Preceded the Search

Trump selected Bill Pulte in early June to replace Tulsi Gabbard as acting Director of National Intelligence. Pulte assumed the role after Gabbard’s departure later that month.

Pulte had no previous intelligence or national-security experience.

Before any discovery had been publicly identified, Trump said Pulte might uncover information about “rigged elections.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned against installing a “weaponized” intelligence chief. Mitch McConnell said anyone performing the role needed the extensive national-security experience required by statute.

After bipartisan resistance, Trump said he would not nominate Pulte permanently. Neither his Secretary of State nor his Treasury Secretary defended the selection when asked.

The sequence raises the risk that the assignment preceded and shaped the analysis.

Trump selected Pulte, publicly connected his assignment to elections he calls “rigged,” and authorized him to declassify material related to 2020. The promised revelation followed.

The chronology is documented. A direct instruction to reach a predetermined conclusion has not been documented.

The Men Building the Case

Bill Pulte

Pulte now oversees the 18-agency intelligence community without previous intelligence or national-security experience.

He built a public profile by filing mortgage-fraud referrals against Trump’s political opponents, including Letitia James, Adam Schiff, Lisa Cook, and Eric Swalwell. He then gained access to intelligence involving Trump’s defining political grievance.

John Solomon

John Solomon reportedly joined the project as a special government employee. MS NOW reports that he has participated in decisions about which classified materials should be released.

Reuters separately reports, citing one source, that Solomon is working with the task force and sought access to files connected to Ratcliffe’s dissent from the 2021 intelligence assessment.

There is a reported precedent. During Trump’s final days in office, Mark Meadows reportedly invited Solomon to review material connected to the Crossfire Hurricane declassification.

The continuity is narrow but relevant: politically sensitive intelligence was opened to a favored outside interpreter who already possessed a public platform. Disputed allegations involving an unredacted binder from that episode are unnecessary to establish that connection.

Kurt Olsen

Kurt Olsen worked to challenge the certified 2020 result before serving as White House director of election security and integrity.

His referral helped initiate the Fulton County investigation, according to The Washington Post. He later joined the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, where prosecutors are examining whether previous investigations of Trump constituted a criminal conspiracy against him.

Reuters reports that it remains unclear whether Olsen’s election-related work has been incorporated into his Justice Department role.

John Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe was Director of National Intelligence when the 2020 intelligence was originally assessed. He dissented from the majority’s characterization of Chinese influence activity.

He did not claim that China altered votes or penetrated election systems. That distinction has remained intact for five years.

If Ratcliffe supports a different conclusion Thursday, he should explain what evidence changed between January 2021 and now.

Kash Patel

Kash Patel leads the FBI while it conducts the Fulton County surge described below. He is also expected to participate in Thursday’s rollout.

Roughly 184,000 Checks

An FBI memo ordered a surge of 260 investigative analysts and staff operations specialists, each assigned an estimated 708 record checks.

That produces a potential workload of approximately 184,080 checks, with a July 17 deadline falling one day after Trump’s speech. Overtime, including weekends and holidays, was authorized. The surge is separate from agents already assigned to the case.

In January, the FBI seized more than 600 boxes from a Fulton County election facility. The material reportedly included physical ballots, ballot images, tabulator tapes, and voter records.

The election has already been counted three times, including once by hand. Each count confirmed Joe Biden’s victory.

The scale proves that the administration has committed extraordinary government resources to relitigating a defeat from six years ago.

Whether those resources uncovered evidence remains unanswered.

The Judges Did Not Validate the Theory

Two federal rulings bracket this investigation. Neither provides the vindication sometimes attributed to it.

In May, Judge J.P. Boulee allowed DOJ to retain the seized ballots because Fulton County had not met the legal standard required to recover them.

He made no finding that fraud occurred.

Boulee called aspects of the investigation “troubling” and described the affidavit as “defective in some respects” and “far from perfect.” DOJ had identified no individual targets and did not dispute that the limitations period for the two offenses appeared to have expired.

In July, Judge William Ray, a Trump appointee, ruled on a separate subpoena seeking personal information about Fulton County election workers and volunteers.

Ray called the subpoena’s scope “staggering,” quashed it, and warned that grand jury authority did not permit DOJ to do whatever it wanted. He also found that the requested information could not support criminal charges because the limitations period had expired.

The government may possess the ballots. It does not possess a judicial finding that they were fraudulent.

The People Inside the Government Are Warning the Country

This reporting requires careful treatment because its sources remain unnamed.

MS NOW reports that multiple current and former officials reviewed the material being considered for release and concluded that it does not establish altered votes.

One said: “I’ve never seen any intelligence that an adversary hacked or changed or flipped votes.”

Another said: “The intelligence just doesn’t say what you want it to say.”

Former national-security officials reportedly called the planned presentation irresponsible because evidence of foreign influence does not establish that votes or outcomes changed.

Reuters separately confirms the speech’s voting-machine focus, Pulte’s declassification authority, and the task force’s existence through its own sourcing. Reuters reports Solomon’s participation based on one source.

The White House has urged the public to await the speech and dismissed anonymous-source reporting as speculation. It has not provided a detailed public response to the reported internal assessments.

The official intelligence record establishes that foreign influence operations occurred. The internal dispute concerns whether the administration is converting evidence of influence, planning, or an unexploited vulnerability into a claim that votes changed.

The Distance Between a File and a Finding

Raw intelligence may contain a foreign official’s boast, unverified sourcing, an unrealized plan, a later-discredited claim, deliberate disinformation, or a real vulnerability that was never exploited.

Analysts test provenance, source reliability, and corroboration before any of that material becomes an intelligence finding.

Declassification establishes that the government possessed a document. Verification requires a separate analytical judgment.

Thousands of authentic pages can create the appearance of overwhelming proof while omitting the completed assessment explaining why a claim was rejected.

That gap is the mechanism to watch Thursday night: volume standing in for verification.

If the Threat Was Real, Why Was the Fix Delayed?

MS NOW reports that the intelligence community briefed White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on potential voting-machine vulnerabilities and that the administration withheld those conclusions at the time.

According to one official, the delay prevented federal agencies from working openly with states and localities on remediation.

Even the officials describing that delay say there is no evidence that an adversary exploited the vulnerabilities or changed a single vote.

The sequence raises a legitimate question: if officials considered the vulnerabilities serious, why did public disclosure and open coordination with states wait until a prime-time political address?

Classified or private remediation may have occurred. The public record has not established whether it did.

Thursday should reveal whether the administration’s priority is correcting a security weakness, constructing a political argument, or pursuing both.

The Speech Begins at Nine. The Investigation Begins at Ten.

Score Thursday night against what gets shown, not what gets said about it.

Start with the documents. Are they complete or selectively excerpted? Are they raw reports or completed assessments? Are confidence levels preserved? Are contradictory assessments released alongside favorable ones?

Then test the underlying claim. Is a specific system identified in a specific jurisdiction? Is there evidence of actual access or only a theoretical vulnerability? Is there evidence of alteration reconciled against the paper record?

Ask whether the evidence is new. Has it already been reviewed or assessed as insufficient to establish technical interference in 2021?

Finally, examine the remedy. Is the administration proposing security improvements, or using the material to justify legislation, another investigation, or emergency action?

Thursday may reveal a genuine vulnerability in a voting system. So far, it has not established that a single vote was changed.

A vulnerability and an altered vote are distinct claims.

The distance between them has become the story.

The Presidency Is Not an Appeals Court

Trump had every opportunity to challenge the 2020 result. He had recounts, audits, state proceedings, federal litigation, his own Justice Department, his own intelligence community, and officials from his own party examining his claims.

He lost the election.

He also lost the effort to overturn it.

A president may expose a genuine vulnerability, order an investigation supported by law, and ask Congress to strengthen election security.

He cannot legitimately use control of the intelligence community to transform his personal refusal to accept defeat into an official finding of the United States government.

Thursday’s evidence deserves scrutiny.

Trump’s preferred conclusion deserves no presumption of truth unless the evidence reaches it.

In a constitutional republic, the president does not decide whether the voters were allowed to defeat him.

Postscript: Why I Am Drawing This Line

I have done this myself. I have explained away warning signs because I wanted to believe that someone did not really mean what they were saying.

History shows how badly that instinct can end. Nations are vulnerable to the same human weakness.

Studying Europe’s destruction in the 1940s, Stalin’s Soviet Union and the regimes it imposed across Eastern Europe, and the military dictatorships and strongmen of South America has made that history less abstract to me.

These histories are not interchangeable, and the United States is not living through an exact replay of any one of them.

History rarely repeats that neatly.

The method, however, is remarkably consistent.

Authoritarianism rarely introduces itself by announcing the end of freedom. It arrives as an exception. An emergency. A temporary correction. A necessary response to enemies, corruption, disorder, or fraud.

It asks people to suspend one rule, excuse one abuse, and trust one leader with power the Constitution deliberately withheld from him. Normal government, everyone is assured, can return afterward.

Too often, afterward never comes.

Paragraph 10 Unwinds in Two Stages

That was the legal and financial reversal of the MOU’s oil relief. The blockade scheduled to begin July 14 is a separate instrument of physical enforcement against commerce with Iranian ports and coastal areas.

The relief structure is therefore unwinding in two stages: sanctions authorization first, maritime interdiction second. The two measures reinforce each other, but they should not be treated as the same mechanism.

Two Guardians, One Strait

On June 25, Secretary of State Rubio categorically rejected Strait tolls as “not even workable,” urged Iran to “abandon the fantasy now,” and said “there isn’t a nation on earth that supports having to pay money to go through the straits.”

His reasoning was substantive. Enforcing a toll would require force against noncompliant vessels, deterring shipping rather than producing a functioning fee system.

On July 13, Trump, while proclaiming America the guardian of the strait, proposed a 20% charge on cargo transiting the Strait. No published mechanism establishes how the proposed percentage would be calculated.

Araghchi rejected the US rate while accepting compensation in principle. He asserted that Iran has always served as the Strait’s guardian and is entitled to compensation on its own terms.

The blockade is official operating policy. The 20% charge remains a presidential proposal without a published implementation structure. Whether it becomes executable policy remains unresolved.

Senior administration officials continued rejecting tolls even after Trump had reserved a possible US exception. The contradiction lies between the toll-free principle defended by those officials and the reimbursement model advanced by the president.

Trump and Tehran now share one premise: securing the Strait may create a claim to compensation. Other senior US officials have publicly rejected that premise.

The emerging dispute is therefore both international and internal to the administration: who may provide security, whether that service creates a right to compensation, and whether any such charge can be implemented lawfully or operationally.

The War Powers Letter: The Administration’s Own Timeline

The administration’s formal notification to Congress grounds the renewed strikes in the same safe-passage clause this publication identified as structurally ambiguous before the memorandum was signed.

The letter states that the current strike phase began on July 7, 2026, following Iranian attacks on “several neutral-flagged commercial vessels” between July 6 and July 7.

It situates the campaign within a series of War Powers notifications beginning with the April 7 cease-fire order, its subsequent extension, and updates issued in June and early July.

The letter quotes the MOU directly. Iran was required “to make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels… from the Persian Gulf to the Seas of Oman.”

It also states that “United States ground forces are not involved in these strikes” and characterizes the operation as “limited, measured, planned, and executed in a manner designed to minimize civilian casualties.”

“Limited and measured” is the administration’s formal characterization.

This tracker assesses operational scale through strike duration, target breadth, geographic reach, regional retaliation, and maritime enforcement. The two standards answer different questions.

The letter is dated July 10 but describes military action beginning July 7. Those dates create a potential issue under the War Powers Resolution’s forty-eight-hour reporting requirement. Exact transmission and receipt times would be necessary to determine compliance conclusively.

The Operational Indicator

The operational test has shifted from announcement to compliance.

The decisive evidence will be whether vessels bound for Iranian ports follow US instructions, whether neutral shipping accepts US coordination, and whether Iran escorts, protects, or retaliates on behalf of targeted commerce.

A blockade that encounters no maritime resistance may remain primarily economic.

A blockade challenged by Iranian forces becomes a direct military contest.

Market Note

Oil prices rose sharply following the blockade announcement amid renewed strikes and worsening risks to commercial shipping.

Brent settled near $83.30 per barrel, rising more than 9% in its largest one-day percentage increase in more than six years. WTI posted a comparable gain.

The timing supports the inference that the blockade announcement contributed materially to the move. The increase cannot be attributed exclusively to the blockade, however, because traders were simultaneously assessing renewed strikes, Iranian retaliation, sharply reduced vessel traffic, and attacks on commercial shipping. The pricing still does not indicate an expectation of complete or permanent Strait closure.

The next test is enforcement: whether Iranian exports are interrupted, whether neutral shipping continues moving, and whether the blockade triggers direct confrontation.

What Changed the Forecast

Briefing No. 1 treated a blockade as a possible escalation branch. Briefing No. 2 treats it as the operating baseline.

The forecast now measures what follows: bounded enforcement, expansion to strategic air targets, diplomatic containment, or territorial operations.

The Clause That Became the Crisis

On June 16, this publication wrote of the Strait provision:

“Article 5 restores access to the Strait. It does not clearly resolve the question of leverage over the Strait. The agreement addresses the interruption. The capability that produced the interruption remains largely untouched.”

Twenty-six days later, that unresolved distinction became the agreement’s central dispute.

The memorandum assigned Iran responsibility for restoring traffic. Washington read that as an operational duty within an international waterway. Iran read it as recognition of regulatory authority: the power to govern passage because it possessed the power to halt it.

The text left both interpretations available. Resolving them would have required one side to concede the strategic question the war had left open.

When southern-corridor traffic recovered in late June, Washington saw implementation. Iran saw leverage slipping away.

The June 16 analysis anticipated that asymmetry:

“Before the war, Iran’s leverage over Hormuz was largely theoretical. After the war, it became operational.”

An operational capability does not disappear because a document describes its exercise as temporary.

The dispute moved from the page to the water on July 6.

It has not moved back.

On Sunday, The New York Times described the crisis as an “all-too-predictable result” of the memorandum’s language. Former American officials and analysts cited by the paper argued that Paragraph 5 recognized an enduring Iranian role in Strait management while leaving unrestricted navigation unsecured.

The legal interpretation remains contested.

The structural weakness identified here on June 16 is now widely recognized.

The Mechanism That Had Not Been Built

On June 16, this publication wrote of the implementation provision:

“Article 12 does not create guardrails. It creates a commitment to discuss guardrails.”

By July 12, the guardrails still had not been built.

No jointly accepted implementation body had been publicly announced to determine whether unrestricted southern passage complied with the MOU, whether Iranian approval authority extended beyond Iran’s territorial jurisdiction, or what remedy applied when the governments disagreed.

The agreement lacked an institution capable of resolving the dispute it had failed to settle.

The Proposal Failed Before It Could Become a Mechanism

Oman produced the crisis’s clearest operating arrangement. It preserved Iranian approval authority in the northern corridor while restoring unrestricted navigation through Omani waters.

The obstacle lay in incompatible objectives.

Washington treats freedom of navigation as non-negotiable. Tehran increasingly treats control over Strait access as a principal strategic gain of the war. No corridor design can reconcile those positions unless one side changes its objective.

Iran’s delegation returned the proposal to Tehran for consideration. Before that review concluded, the IRGC attacked the GFS Galaxy in Omani waters.

The attack functionally rejected the proposal before Tehran formally answered it.

The Evidence on Factional Coordination

The evidence increasingly supports a model in which Iran’s diplomatic and enforcement tracks differ more over method than objective.

The diplomats preserve negotiating space. The IRGC preserves coercive leverage.

Sunday strengthened that interpretation. Negotiations remained formally open while the IRGC continued acting in ways consistent with Iran’s effort to control access to the Strait.

The pattern is increasingly visible. The command structure behind it remains unconfirmed.

What the Original Critique Got Right

Several structural weaknesses identified on June 16 moved from the text into operations within twenty-six days.

Confirmed

Strait governance: Paragraph 5’s ambiguity became the central dispute of the post-signing period. The June 16 verdict—that the agreement “restores access” while leaving “leverage” unresolved—closely matches the pattern that followed.

Enforcement: Paragraph 12 left the first major compliance dispute without an institution capable of arbitrating it. Oman attempted in July to build the mechanism the memorandum had omitted in June. The underlying disagreement overwhelmed it.

War and conflict: The memorandum temporarily paused large-scale fighting. The governing dispute survived and eventually returned both parties to force.

Process and outcome: Talks continued through Sunday as the strike cycle widened. The June 16 critique described that weakness directly: “The agreement repeatedly achieves consensus on a process while leaving consensus on an outcome for later.”

Sequenced relief: Washington withdrew the principal oil-sales authorization after concluding that Iran had violated the agreement. The incentive became pressure. The pressure still did not produce agreement.

Not Yet Fully Tested

The reconstruction-financing provision, asset irreversibility, and long-term durability remain unresolved. Events have not yet reached those tests.

The Operational Indicator

Kpler recorded twenty-two vessels transiting Thursday, down from more than 130 daily before the war.

Other Sunday counts differed because they measured different periods, vessel classes, and levels of AIS visibility. Windward recorded nine AIS-visible commercial transits during a twelve-hour window. A US official cited approximately twenty crossings over a broader twenty-four-hour period, excluding vessels traveling without US coordination. An analysis of MarineTraffic data identified six completed AIS-visible merchant transits, all through Iran’s northern route.

The figures are not directly comparable. Military-guided vessels may disable AIS, while commercial platforms use different windows and classifications.

Every measure points toward the same operational reality: traffic remains far below normal, and unrestricted southern-corridor navigation has not resumed.

The Strait remains physically passable and commercially impaired. Traffic continues under military risk and coercive control.

Market Note

The first official market test produced a renewed risk premium without panic.

At the data cutoff, Brent was up 3.08% at $78.35 per barrel. WTI was up 3.09% at $73.62.

Kpler’s Amena Bakr said the market had adjusted to recurring volatility and “on-again, off-again hostilities.” That helps explain why prices moved less dramatically than the military escalation alone might suggest.

The signal remains mixed: prices recognize renewed disruption while leaving a durable closure or uncontrolled regional war outside the market’s base case.

What Changed the Forecast

Sunday’s continuation converted a threshold event into a sustained operational cycle.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died Saturday evening, according to a statement released by his office early Sunday.

He was 71.

“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”

NBC News reported, citing police scanner audio, that emergency personnel responded to a reported cardiac-arrest call at Graham’s Capitol Hill home Saturday night. Graham had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Friday. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

His death came two days after his 71st birthday.

What Happens to Graham’s Seat

Graham’s death creates an immediate vacancy in South Carolina’s Senate delegation and temporarily reduces the Republican majority by one vote.

South Carolina law (S.C. Code § 7-19-20) authorizes Gov. Henry McMaster to appoint a temporary successor. The law does not require him to choose a member of Graham’s party, although McMaster is expected to appoint a Republican. Because the vacancy occurred more than 100 days before the November general election, McMaster’s appointee will serve through the remainder of Graham’s current term, which ends January 3, 2027.

Graham had already secured the Republican nomination for the next term. Because he was nominated through a primary, state law (S.C. Code § 7-11-55) requires a special Republican primary to select his replacement on the November ballot. Based on the statutory timetable and multiple local reports, candidate filing could begin as early as July 21, followed by a special Republican primary by August 11 and, if necessary, a runoff two weeks later. The State Election Commission has not yet formally announced the complete schedule.

The appointment and nomination are separate contests. McMaster may appoint someone who later wins the Republican nomination, or he may select a caretaker who serves only through the end of Graham’s current term.

Who Could McMaster Appoint?

McMaster’s lieutenant governor has statewide experience and the closest political relationship with the governor among the leading contenders. Her appointment would create a vacancy in state government while leaving South Carolina’s congressional delegation intact.

Joe Wilson — 18%
Wilson enters the model after reporting indicated that he is interested in the interim appointment and would seek a full Senate term. South Carolina’s longest-serving Republican member of Congress brings decades of federal experience, deep state-party relationships, and a foreign-policy record that overlaps with important parts of Graham’s legacy. His appointment would create a vacancy in South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District. His son, Attorney General Alan Wilson, is also the Republican nominee for governor, creating an unusual political-family dynamic.

Pamela Evette — 23%

Evette enters with statewide name recognition, an established donor network, and a campaign organization built during the gubernatorial race. An appointment would likely make her the immediate favorite by giving her both incumbency and McMaster’s implicit support.

Lynch finished second to Graham with 28.9% of the June primary vote and already has an organization built around the Senate race. Among the likely candidates, he begins with the strongest demonstrated support from Republican primary voters.

Joe Wilson — 18%

Wilson enters as a major contender after reporting indicated that he is interested in both the interim appointment and a full Senate term. South Carolina’s longest-serving Republican member of Congress brings decades of federal experience, deep state-party relationships, and a foreign-policy record that overlaps with important parts of Graham’s legacy. His age and the prospect of simultaneous statewide campaigns involving both him and his son could limit his ceiling.

William Timmons — 11%

Nancy Mace — 9%

Mace would bring the field’s largest national profile, strongest media reach, and one of its most developed fundraising networks. Those advantages would be offset by resistance among parts of the Trump-aligned electorate following her public break with the president over the release of the Epstein files and her fifth-place finish in the Republican gubernatorial primary.

Ralph Norman — 7%

Norman could consolidate grassroots conservatives seeking a more confrontational successor to Graham. His challenge would be expanding beyond that faction in a short and crowded primary.

Trey Gowdy — 4%

Gowdy would immediately become a leading contender if he entered. His 4% estimate reflects uncertainty about whether he would run rather than a judgment that he would be electorally weak.

More Than Two Decades in the Senate

Graham was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and took office in January 2003. He won reelection in 2008, 2014, and 2020 and had secured the Republican nomination for a fifth term only weeks before his death. Before entering the Senate, Graham represented South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Graham served for 33 years across the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and South Carolina Air National Guard. A former judge advocate, he continued his military service while holding elected office and retired as a colonel in 2015. At the time of his death, Graham chaired the Senate Budget Committee and remained one of the chamber’s most recognizable Republican voices on national security, foreign policy, and judicial nominations.

Foreign policy defined much of his Senate career. He was one of Israel’s most consistent supporters in Congress, advocating for its security, a strong U.S.-Israel alliance, and sustained pressure on Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah. Graham’s relationship with Donald Trump changed dramatically over the past decade. During the 2016 Republican presidential race, Graham was one of Trump’s sharpest Republican critics. After Trump entered office, Graham gradually became one of his closest and most consistent allies in the Senate. Trump endorsed Graham’s 2026 reelection campaign, while South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Sen. Tim Scott served as campaign co-chairmen.

Neither side formally withdrew. Neither fully implemented the agreement as written.

Vali Nasr, the Iran scholar at Johns Hopkins SAIS, told the New York Times:

“The M.O.U. increasingly looked like a mirage. The view from Tehran is that the U.S. is engaged in a concerted effort to take control of the Strait out of Iran’s hands, to weaken its position in Lebanon and to regain its own strength in order to put even more pressure on Iran or to go back to war.”

Nasr is describing one contest playing out on three fronts, the Strait, Lebanon, and sanctions, rather than three separate disputes.

That reading lines up with the structural argument this publication has made since June 17.

That convergence remains one corroborating data point.

What Happened Since July 8

The US added an ultimatum with a fixed clock to the ongoing strikes.

Senior officials demanded Iran issue a public statement by Saturday confirming the Strait is fully open and that Iran will stop firing on commercial vessels.

Washington declined to specify consequences but confirmed contingency plans exist.

Iran’s public and private communications diverged sharply this week.

According to CBS News sourcing, Iranian officials privately told Trump advisers they made a mistake, attributed the vessel attacks to “an errant sect of hardliners” trying to undermine negotiations, and requested continued talks.

Publicly, Araghchi accused the Treasury Secretary of violating Article 9 of the MOU through new sanctions, writing:

“There can only be mutual compliance.”

Ghalibaf said Iran remains “distrustful of the Americans” and prepared for “all-out defense.”

Iravani told the UN that Strait activity “rests exclusively with Iran”; separately, other Iranian officials, not confirmed as Iravani in this instance, warned that outside interference constitutes a violation of the MOU.

These accounts can coexist.

They could reflect institutional fragmentation, audience-specific messaging calibrated to different listeners, or a private Iranian explanation being relayed through a US filter that shapes its final form before it reaches reporters.

All three are plausible. None is confirmed.

New sanctions landed Friday.

OFAC designated Dubai-based financier Ali Ansari, whom Treasury says oversees assets benefiting Mojtaba Khamenei, other regime elites, and the IRGC.

The action also covered three Iranian exchange houses, two front companies, and associated individuals involved in moving billions annually for sanctioned banks.

Shipping data confirms the Strait remains severely depressed, though the precise figures vary by tracking provider.

Kpler data reported by Reuters showed 22 monitored tanker and LNG transits Monday, falling to 14 Wednesday and 10 Thursday, against a prewar baseline of 125 to 140 daily sailings.

Lloyd’s List separately reported no AIS-visible vessel above 10,000 deadweight tons using the southern Omani route after July 7, though at least two vessels may have crossed with transponders off.

CENTCOM disputed the characterization of Iranian control, stating more than 800 commercial vessels and 380 million barrels of crude have transited since early May with US assistance.

Both claims can be true. Vessels continue crossing while traffic remains a fraction of prewar volume.

Two New Risk Factors

The reported assassination plot and Trump’s response.

Israel shared intelligence with Washington that it said indicated Iran was considering a fresh plan to kill Trump, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Some US officials told the Journal that the intelligence was not considered entirely credible. That limits what can be concluded about the alleged plot. Trump’s response still matters because it established an explicit trigger for mass retaliation.

Trump’s response, posted Friday night, read in part:

“1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat… Orders have already been given, and the U.S. Military is ready, willing, and able, for a one year period of time, subject to extension, to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran.”

This exceeds the “cancer” and “scum” language from Ankara in specificity.

It names a posture, a timeframe, and an explicit trigger.

This reporting justifies a modest upward adjustment to tail risk.

The ultimatum, likely Iranian noncompliance, depressed shipping, and ongoing strikes remain the primary drivers.

Repair activity at Parchin.

CNN’s satellite imagery analysis is narrower than initial characterizations suggested.

It reportedly shows repair and reinforcement at Taleghan 2, a facility inside the Parchin military complex previously linked to suspected nuclear-weapons research, alongside repairs at missile and air defense facilities.

CNN reportedly found no visible reconstruction activity at Natanz, Fordow, or Isfahan, Iran’s primary enrichment sites.

The escalation risk lies in how Washington or Israel interprets the repairs before their purpose is independently established.

The imagery could become the basis for a dispute over the MOU’s status-quo provision. It does not establish resumed enrichment or broad nuclear reconstruction.

Why the Regime Negotiates This Way

Alex Vatanka’s analysis of the post-Khamenei power structure, published this week, offers one useful account of why Iran’s public and private positions diverge without necessarily reflecting bad faith on either channel.

Mojtaba Khamenei inherited an apparatus built to distribute decision-making across institutions that check but cannot fully dominate one another: the Leader’s Office, the IRGC, the National Security Council, parliament, the judiciary.

Vatanka’s framing:

“When the committee succeeds, the system takes the credit. When it fails, a subordinate institution takes the blame.”

Vatanka argues that any agreement moving through this system will be implemented slowly, piecemeal, and reversibly because the balance Khamenei built rewards caution and punishes bold moves.

This offers one plausible mechanism that remains unconfirmed.

It may be a structurally accurate account of how a decision gets made and then partially disowned inside a system engineered to prevent any single actor, including the new Supreme Leader, from bearing full responsibility for either escalation or de-escalation.

If accurate, the Frozen MOU may reflect the system’s default operating state.

The Lebanon Front Remains Frozen

Lebanon’s frozen-implementation pattern is well documented: Rome talks are scheduled for July 15 and 16; Beirut has conditioned its participation on Israeli withdrawal from two pilot zones; Israel has tied full withdrawal to Hezbollah’s disarmament; and Hezbollah’s Naim Qassem has rejected the framework.
