I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much time I’ve spent trying to fix myself.

For most of my life, if I felt tired, overwhelmed, stressed, or just not quite like myself, my first instinct was to do something about it. And the answer was always to get more disciplined, and work harder. I always assumed there was something I could do, better, to be better.

But as I’ve gotten older, especially navigating burnout, autoimmune issues and now menopause, I’ve started to realize that my body isn’t always asking me to do more. Sometimes it’s asking me to stop.

That has been a really hard lesson for me because I’m a doer. I like to be productive. I like having a plan. I like feeling like I’m in control. And for years, I thought pushing through was a sign of strength.

Now I’m not so sure.

My body doesn’t respond to stress the way it used to. I can’t necessarily have a terrible night of sleep, pile on a stressful day, do an intense workout and expect to wake up the next morning feeling completely fine. Menopause has made that especially obvious. Things that used to be easy suddenly require more attention. Recovery matters more. Sleep matters more. Stress matters more. And I’ve had to accept that my body has changed, even though my mind sometimes still thinks I’m 25.

The autoimmune piece has taught me something similar. When your body is constantly giving you signals, you eventually have to pay attention to them. Fatigue, inflammation, brain fog, feeling depleted or simply feeling like something is off can be easy to dismiss when you’re used to powering through life. I did that for a long time.

Now I’m trying to have a different relationship with my body.

Instead of immediately asking, “What do I need to do to fix this?” I’m trying to ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?”

There comes a point in many women’s wellness journeys where what once “worked” no longer does.

The workout routine that used to energise now leaves you depleted. The healthy habits that once felt supportive start to feel rigid. Sleep shifts. Recovery takes longer. Stress lands differently.

And perhaps most disorienting of all: your body begins speaking a language you don’t yet understand.

Sometimes the answer is that I need to move. Sometimes I need to eat a real meal instead of grabbing whatever is convenient. Sometimes I need to get outside and get some sunshine. Sometimes I need to go to bed early. And sometimes, honestly, I need to do absolutely nothing.

That last one is still a work in progress for me.

This year has really been about stripping everythign back for me. Truly doing the basics.

Eat food that makes you feel good. Move your body. Get outside. Get enough sleep. Find ways to manage stress. Spend time with people who make you feel like yourself. And pay attention to what your body is telling you instead of constantly trying to override it.

We’re dealing with burnout. [Women’s] autoimmune disease rates are so much higher than men. We’re getting sick and we’re not coping.

I’m also learning that not every uncomfortable feeling needs to be immediately fixed.

Sometimes you’re tired because you’re tired.

Sometimes you need a slower day.

Sometimes your body needs recovery more than it needs another workout.

And that person who triggered you doesn’t need an immediate response.

Sometimes you have to admit that the pace you were able to maintain in your 30s and 40s isn’t the pace that works for you anymore.

And that doesn’t mean you’re getting old or becoming less capable. It might just mean you’re finally learning how to work with your body instead of constantly working against it.

Oftentimes people are so out of their bodies they don’t even understand the difference between what feels supportive and what doesn’t.

I want to feel strong, but I also want to feel well. I want to take care of myself without making wellness another full-time job. I want to exercise because I love what movement does for my body and my mind, not because I’m punishing myself for something I ate. I want to eat well because I know how much better I feel when I do.

I’m not afraid of getting older, but I do want to feel as good as I can for as long as I can.

And maybe the most important thing I’m learning is that my body isn’t working against me.

It’s communicating with me.

I just have to be quiet enough to hear it.

Women in midlife are not meant to carry everything. We are meant to reconnect with ourselves.

Summer is notorious for shaking up routines, challenging boundaries, and activating old patterns. We are rushing because we don’t want to miss out. We’re overcommitting because we want everyone to be happy. We’re maybe undereating then overcompensating because of travel, and gatherings, and kids, and you know the drill.

But here’s what I’ve learned from almost thirty years of navigating through my own health challenges.

Your body already knows what to do. You just have to give it a chance to speak.

This Week

We are on the cusp of a holiday weekend, making it a perfect time to check in with yourself and your health habits. Are you already on the verge of thinking about how to be mindful of food choices during parties… or maybe you are someone who throws all caution to the wind over the holiday only to regret it post-weekend.

The simple truth is we live in a perfectionism-driven society. We’re led to believe that we’re either “on” or “off”. You’re following a healthy diet or you are not.

This is the black-and-white thinking that works against women so today I am imparting some of the tips that work for me and helped me find peace with my body.

You can make informed decisions about what you eat at any one moment.

You can eat for joy.

You can always choose again (and that applies to a n y t h i n g in life)!

When we speak to ourselves unkindly, it really does a number on us, creating mental stress, that actually inhibits proper digestion. Yup. So you eat something bad, stress about it, and then all of a sudden you feel worse, because of the mental anguish and the physical too.

We live in a culture that celebrates food. Think about all of the wonderful national foods we celebrate on Independence Day – hot dogs, BBQs, smores. Okay, do you really want to give all that up?

So some words of advice going into this holiday weekend…

• Go into an event thinking about how you want to feel.

• Focus on enjoying time with friends and family.

• Be mindful of food choices.

• Stop before you mindlessly put food into your mouth, and think: do you really want it, and if you do, eat (and digest) with joy.

I enjoy a treat daily because I can, and I choose to! I have a sweet tooth, and life is too darn short! But I do make better decisions about what I choose when I do indulge. This is why it’s important to fuel your body properly, so you don’t feel deprived.

When your diet includes fat for fuel with decreased levels of sugar, even eating a sweet treat can mean you’re fueling your goals instead of hindering them.

And here’s the magical thing:

When you live for joy and eat for joy, your body magically fnds its happy place, because cortisol in midlife is what makes us hold onto weight.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that there isn’t one “perfect” morning routine. Some seasons call for fasting. Other seasons call for nourishment earlier in the day. The key is understanding what your body is asking for.

When I do eat breakfast, I want it to do more than simply keep me full.

I want it to support my hormones.

That’s why I’ve been paying more attention.

I am sharing this easy swap I made! Eating in mid-life doesnt have to be your part-time job.

The Midlife Nutrition Shift I Wish Someone Had Told Me About

Food is so much more than fuel. Every bite provides the nutrients your body uses to repair tissue, support your immune system, reduce oxidative stress, and maintain healthy muscles, bones, and skin.

I used to always skip breakfast—but in my late 40s I realized coffee was hitting different. I felt super sensitive and highly aggravated and irritated drinking it on an empty stomach. BUT, I love coffee. What I’ve learned is that after 40, our bodies simply don’t respond to coffee the way it used to. So skipping breakfast meant cortisol spikes.

We naturally lose muscle as we age, and maintaining it takes more than the occasional chicken breast at dinner. Research suggests that spreading protein throughout the day is especially helpful for preserving muscle, strength, and healthy aging.

Most of us are unintentionally under-eating protein, especially at breakfast.

Protein and weight in midlife

Protein is the most satiating macro—it will keep you fuller longer. This should help you feel less snacky between meals and be less likely to overeat, which sometimes is a catalyst for weight loss on its own.

Fun fact: Protein has the highest thermogenic effect of any macro—you burn about 20-30% of the calories ingested through digestion. (For reference; fats are 0-3% and carbs are 5-10%).

Protein is also what maintains and builds muscle, so you’re truly improving your metabolism and body composition as you lose weight.

In perimenopause, estrogen starts to drop—and estrogen does a lot of work for our metabolism, including keeping your cells sensitive to insulin. As it declines, insulin resistance tends to creep up, which is part of why blood sugar and body composition can feel different. Protein helps on a few fronts here: it blunts the blood sugar spike from a meal, helps preserve muscle, and it supports bone, which can also be affected as estrogen falls.

Hitting your protein goals is very doable once you anchor each meal around it.

Here’s what has worked for me:

• Start the day with 20–30 grams of protein instead of a carb-heavy breakfast.

• Build meals around protein first, then add veggies and healthy carbs.

• Keep high-protein snacks on hand, so I’m not reaching for whatever is easiest at 3 p.m.

• Don’t stress about perfection—consistency beats chasing a magic number (like those 100g posts, sorry, I just think that’s impossible)

Whole foods are always my foundation, and these are things I always have on hand: eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, chicken, deli turkey or roast beef (I like the in-house roasted ones from Whole Foods, vs processed deli meats), raw cheddar or goat’s cheese and tofu all make regular appearances.

That’s where my favorite protein comes in: Shakeology.

I’ve tried a lot of protein powders over the years, and what keeps me coming back to Shakeology is that it’s more than just protein. And it’s easy on my stomach (as many plant-based proteins ae known to cause digestive distress, though they do have a pb option). Shakeology includes fiber, probiotics, digestive enzymes, adaptogenic herbs, and a wide variety of whole-food ingredients. It is just more nutrient-dense.

When I do choose a protein powder, I also pay attention to a few things experts consistently recommend:

• Around 20–30 grams of protein per serving

• A complete amino acid profile

• Minimal added sugar

• Simple ingredient lists

• Third-party quality testing whenever possible

Midlife has taught me that eating well means checking a few basic boxes, like more protein and fiber and consistent, balanced meals. It’s about giving my body what it actually needs to stay strong, energized, and capable for the decades ahead.

Protein isn’t trendy—it’s foundational. And for me, making it a priority in the am been one of the simplest changes with the biggest payoff.

One of my favorite ways to use their blends is in coffee. It is just as easy to prepare as your regular morning cup.

And remember, this is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about learning how to care for yourself in a deeper, kinder way. Some days, healing looks like a green smoothie. Other days, you stay out late with friends (totally worth it)!

The healthiest women I know aren’t the ones who follow the same routine every day. They’re the ones who know when their body is asking for more, like mine was, and when it’s time to nourish their hormones differently.

Your body is always giving you feedback.

The more you learn to listen, the less you’ll need someone else to tell you what’s healthy.

We spend roughly a third of our lives asleep, and for side and stomach sleepers, that often means hours of repetitive facial compression. Unlike expression lines, which form from muscle movement and typically run horizontally, sleep lines are created. They tend to run vertically, forming where the skin repeatedly folds against a pillow. Here’s the thing; as collagen declines with age, those folds don’t bounce back as quickly.

Dermatologists refer to this as sleep wrinkling — a result of sustained pressure rather than facial expression. It can also contribute to morning puffiness, depending on how fluid settles overnight.

I tried training myself to sleep on my back, but like many people, I would start that way and wake up on my side. Standard pillows didn’t help much; they flattened under the weight of my head, and I’d still find my face pressed into the fabric by morning.

So let’s talk good hair, like the stop-you-in-your-tracks hair.

What I have noticed as I get older is that investing in skincare matters. I’d much rather spend money on quality products that work (vs. products to cover it up). I love my skin to glow from within. I am The “Glow” Wellness after all.

I’m often asked about my skincare routine on Insta. I have chosen to go the all-natural route, meaning no fillers or neuromodulators (SHOCKING, I know). I mean no shame, you do you. But it’s taken me a while to figure out what works for my skin and doesn’t (I talk about what I have tried here).

A compromised barrier, and why it matters, especially in mid-life.

Particularly as we hit menopause, our skin loses its youthful plumpness and dewiness. And we are left with thinner skin. That’s because the production of collagen – the building block of the skin – decreases after a certain age and, during menopause, it could drop as much as 30%. That’s disastrous for skin integrity. At the same time, elastin – which makes your skin snap back when pinched – also declines massively, as does hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture in.

It took a lot of trial and error to get me back to a place where my skin feels nourished, replenished, and supple. Those are the hallmarks of beautiful skin. For a long time, I was using too many stripping ingredients, and my skin suffered. My barrier was compromised, which meant my skin was reactive and irritated, the opposite of glowing. Thanksgiving week is notorious for shaking up routines, challenging boundaries, and activating old patterns. We are rushing because we don’t want to miss out. We’re overcommitting because we want everyone to be happy. We’re skipping meals and grabbing snacks because travel, meetings, and gatherings rearrange every plan we thought we had.

But here’s what I’ve learned from almost thirty years of navigating through my own health challenges.

Your body already knows what to do. You just have to give it a chance to speak.

This Week

We are on the cusp of a holiday weekend making it a perfect time to check in with yourself and your health habits. Are you already on the verge of thinking about how to be mindful of food choices during holiday parties… or maybe you are someone who throws all caution to the wind over the holiday only to regret it post-weekend.

The simple truth is we live in a perfectionism-driven society. We’re led to believe that we’re either “on” or “off”. You’re following a healthy diet or you are not.

This is the black and white thinking I work with my clients to improve and today I am imparting some of those tips.

Stop thinking of food as simply “good” or “bad” and start getting more comfortable around trusting yourself around food.

You can make informed decisions about what you eat at any one moment.

You can eat for joy.

You can always choose again, with the next meal and the next day.

When we speak to ourselves unkindly it really does a number on us, creating mental stress, that actually inhibits proper digestion. Yup, read that again. So you eat something bad, stress about it, and then all of a sudden you feel worse, because of the mental anguish and the physical too.

We live in a culture that celebrates food. Think about all of the wonderful national foods we celebrate on Independence Day – hot dogs, BBQs, smores. Okay, do you really want to give all that up?

So some words of advice going into this holiday weekend…

• Go into an event thinking about how you want to feel. Focus on enjoying time with friends and family.

• Be mindful of food choices. Stop before you mindlessly put food into your mouth, and think, do you really want it, and if you do, eat (and digest) with joy.

I enjoy a treat daily because I can, and I choose to! I have a sweet tooth and life is too darn short! But I do make better decisions about what I chose when I do indulge. This is why it’s important to find alternatives, so you don’t feel deprived. I am always trying or inventing delicious “better for you” recipes that satisfy any craving. I personally think they taste so much better!

When your diet includes fat for fuel with decreased levels of sugar, even eating a sweet treat can mean you’re fueling your goals instead of hindering them.

Choose one moment to practice listening instead of rushing.

Write down what you notice. Even the most minor shift builds trust. This is how you start rebuilding healthy habits that last.

Even for those devoted to their facialists and dermatologists, clinically worthy results have suddenly become available at-home. There are some great tech devices out there that really work. I wanted a device that would give me both instant and long-lasting results. And I want to save you time, money (and space, who needs a crowded drawer full of devices you do not use). For a long time, those with hooded eyelids looking for a lift had few options beyond plastic surgery. But technology and products have come a long way in recent years, yielding several non-invasive options for hooded eyes. Botox, prescription eye drops, are among the options.

The Cause of Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes are where the skin above the eyes sags and hangs over the eyes. They're caused by a variety of factors, including age and genetics. The excess skin occurs between the brow and the upper lash line. When eyes are hooded, the sagging skin may cover all or part of the eyelid, causing a crease and making the eyelid/eyes appear smaller. While it does not usually lead to medical issues, some find it can obscure their vision, in addition to cosmetic issues. Eyelid skin is also four times thinner than the rest of the face, making it particularly susceptible to UV damage and hormonal changes. Loss of volume from the temples can add to upper lid sagging/hooding. These factors, together with reduced elasticity and elastic results in loss of collagen, a protein that gives us a plump, youthful look.

In my case, it is genetics; I was born this way. But aging contributed to the hooded look of my eyelids. As we age, our muscles begin to lose elasticity and sag.

What’s worked for me

What’s worked for me has been a combination of at-home microcurrent, occasionally using a prescription eye drop (more on that below), and this new-to-me cream that is gaining popularity for its groundbreaking proprietary research and efficacy.

My personal experience

During menopause, my hair thinned, and I was worried about all the hair I was losing. Every time I showered or brushed my hair, I was losing so much hair. Quite the shock. My hairdresser even noticed.

Your hair is part of your integumentary system, which also includes your skin and nails. This system is not essential to life. Underlying conditions and hair health

Research shows that changes in the look of your hair texture or thickness can be signs of underlying health conditions. 7. Hairstyling and treatments: over-styling or chemical treatments, such as frequent coloring, straightening, perming, and extensions can damage hair and lead to breakage and hair loss; and

8. Poor blood flow to the scalp: Hair follicles require a steady supply of nutrients and oxygen to remain healthy and to grow. These nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the hair follicles via the bloodstream. BUT when blood flow to the scalp is limited, the hair follicles may not receive an adequate supply of these essential nutrients and oxygen, leading to hair follicle miniaturization, a process in which hair follicles shrink in size, and produce thinner, shorter, and finer hair strands. This process ultimately leads to hair loss or thinning hair.

So what can you do?

1. Increase Trace Minerals: Thinning hair triggered by low thyroid can cause sudden hair loss, caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles. Low thyroid can often be rebalanced with plants. Adding seaweed to your diet can be a considerable health benefit. Also, buy organic vegetables.

2. Mineral Deficiencies Linked to Hair Loss: Falling or dull brittle hair due to mineral deficiencies. It is easy to experience deficiencies of trace minerals. Many experience significant vitamin and mineral deficiencies despite eating a balanced diet. Even when trying to eat well, food’s nutrient density is the issue.

Eat from the rainbow to ensure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. Adding in two portions of good fats each day, such as nuts, seeds and avocados, is also essential, so you nourish your hair from the inside out. If anemic, be vigilant with your dark green leafy vegetables, dark red foods like beetroot and pomegranates.

Digestive support is something we all need because we now know that we are what we absorb. TIP! Chewing your food around 20 times per mouthful is said to improve gut function, and absorption.

3. Mitigate Stress: If you feel under stress, it would be great to embrace mindfulness and adopt some good habits to support a balanced and joyful lifestyle.

I get it. Social media is another way for us to detach from real life and ultimately feel just a bit better. I totally understand that perspective. 💯 percent.

I’m my era of stillness, surrender - and I’ve learned to detach from external validation. (Okay, tbh it’s a work in progress)!

Dependency on stuff for one’s life fulfillment is dangerous.

Why? Because stuff can appeal to our emotional body, where our perceived woundedness hangs out.

We end up in a self-consuming loop - nothing is ever good enough, and nothing is ever enough!

But let’s get into this….

So how to judge what you need…?

1. Buy things that insight joy. I really subscribe to that.

2. Use critical thinking. If you like something, give it a few days - still on your mind…maybe it’s a yes.

Part of maturity is learning how to operate from your inner guidance.

Dependency on external authority is a trap—and know this: Reliance on outside powers can atrophy our intuition and critical thinking. And give your power away….

Assert your own independence that you don’t NEED anything.

You are whole as is.

And that anything you bring into your life should only ENHANCE it and not take the place of human connection, experience, love, joy, and MEANING!

Addiction to tech and devices is ravaging our brain chemistry, nervous systems, and relationships. More than ever, we need human connection.

Stuff is neutral. It doesn’t hold any meaning.

What does? Feeling.

Get intentional about what you bring into your life, and more discerning.

Recalibrate your worth and wisdom.

You find what you're seeking, but only if you go in. You probably won’t need all the stuff and external validation, and you just may realize you had all the power within yourself all along and the knowing, the knowing to know what’s right for you and what isn’t!

Don’t outsource your happiness!

LET'S GET SOCIAL….

If you’re over 40 years old, like me, and maybe if you are in peri/post menopause you’ve probably noticed that fat loss is harder.

When we’re younger, in our teens, 20’s and 30’s, we can often (not always) get away with a lot. We can eat more carbs without gaining weight, and keep up our energy and strength levels.

But after 40, things change. And this related to changes in our hormones as we age.

These changes affect our metabolism — how our body regulates the use of energy sources such as carbs and fats.

When we’re younger, our metabolism is faster and energy from carbs is burned fast without adding weight, but as we get older, with hormonal changes, it can slow down, to the point where some people can eat a single muffin and gain weight.

Let’s dive into what’s happening here and what you can do about it. Even more importantly, fat loss at this age can actually “de-age” us.

Yes, I said “de-age”!

ESTROGEN, TESTOSTERONE & WEIGHT GAIN OVER 40

Estrogen is not only an important hormone for reproductive functions, but is also a body fat-promoting hormone.

When it gets too high, it can increase insulin and cortisol levels, which lead to excess body fat, while at the same time lowering thyroid and progesterone, two hormones which help to burn body fat.

So this should be great then when we hit menopause, because our estrogen levels start lowering and we lose body fat, right?

Unfortunately, no.

While too-high estrogen leads to weight gain, estrogen that’s too low… also leads to weight gain.

When estrogen levels get too low, as they do in menopause, this can lead to excess body fat being created, especially around the middle, along with a decrease in muscle and even body density.

And it does this in part by affecting our appetite, increasing cravings for high calorie and sugary foods.

But it also affects men.

Just as estrogen starts lowering in women, testosterone levels start lowering in men around the age of 40.

This testosterone is crucial to keep up one’s metabolism, muscle mass and bone density. And its lack makes it much easier to gain weight, especially around the middle, and much harder to get rid of it once it’s there.

WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE AND HOW DOES IT APPLY TO AGING

When you consume sugar, your body releases a hormone called insulin. This insulin shuttles the sugar to your cells and gets them to open up to let the sugar in so the cell can use it to make energy.

And, if the cells have too much sugar already, the insulin directs that the sugar be connected up to fatty acids and stored as body fat.

When the cell is healthy and functioning correctly, it lets the sugar right in. This is called being “Insulin Sensitive,” where the cell is sensitive to insulin’s request and opens right up.

But, when the cells have been getting too much sugar, for too long, especially processed sugars, the cells can start to resist insulin. And it takes more insulin to get the cells to open up.

And the more the cells resist the insulin, the more the insulin is forced to convert the sugar to body fat.

When we’re overweight to one degree or another, we have some amount of resistance to insulin occurring.

The solution, very simply, is to remove sugars for a period of time, forcing our cells to become accustomed to using fat as an energy source, and our cells become sensitive to insulin again and our body fat levels come down.

Great.

But here’s the thing, while sugar does this when we’re younger… it does it much more when we’re older. And as we age it becomes easier and easier for our cells to build up a resistance to insulin.

This makes it easier and easier to build excess body fat.

And, as insulin is also connected to cortisol, which is connected to our hunger hormones, we can start getting pretty heavy cravings more easily than we would have when younger.

So we need to be more careful here.

This doesn’t mean you can never have carbs or sugar, but we do need to watch how much we’re having as it has a major affect on us as we get older.

This is especially so considering that while testosterone and growth hormone levels (two anti-aging hormones) will naturally decline as we get older, excess sugar and body fat makes these decline much faster.

The more fat we have on our bodies, the less testosterone and growth hormone we’ll have, and the less thyroid we’ll have.

LOSING THE WEIGHT & REVERSING OUR BIOLOGICAL AGE

So, first, we need to cut down on the sugars and cut out the processed sugars.

These increase body fat levels through higher insulin, cortisol and estrogen, while lowering the growth hormone and IGF we need to burn body fat and slow aging.

I would also recommend taking Omega 3 Fatty Acids too.

These help to restore our hunger hormones to there normal levels, while helping to balance our hormones, faster than anything else I know.

However, if you have very significant sugar cravings that are hard to get over, I would first recommendtestign for something like (SIBO) and Candida that brings on most of these cravings (I recommedn finding a good integrative doctor).

These same bacteria also cause bloating adding inches to our waist we assume is body fat, but which isn't. Taking probiotics and digestive enzymes can remove this bloating fast and bring our gut health and overall health up to the point where fat loss becomes quite easy.

Between these things we can address sugar cravings, bloating, caused by harmful gut bacteria and candida, and lose excess body fat we thought we were stuck with and then keep it off.

November is here, and I’ve been working on incorporating some shifts into my daily routine as we transition into the colder months — and I am sharing them with you today.

If you're ready to say goodbye to feeling sluggish and looking for something to help lift your energy (without spiking your cortisol), keep reading.

So first let’s chat slow mornings. This has been a game-changer. The last thing you want to do is spike your cortisol first thing. Here’s what I suggest: no screens, sitting with either a warm glass of lemon water and green juice, reading or meditating, and getting that morning sunlight in your eyes.
