Last week we spoke of Shen, the spirit, and now it is fitting to consider how the Earth energetically shapes the human body and the human mind.

Earth is universal. Whether you are Wood, Fire, Metal, or Water in constitution, you stand upon the Earth, and the Earth shapes you. After the age of thirty-three, the Earth begins to reveal itself more strongly.

Often, it appears maladaptively—heaviness, stagnation, obesity. Yet what you see on the surface is not always the truth. One may look like an “Earth person,” yet their deeper constitution is Fire, or Metal, or Wood.

The seasoned practitioner must see beyond the surface, beyond the heaviness that covers the form, and discern the true elemental nature of their student or patient.

The Balance of the Four Held by the Fifth

The Earth rests in the center. It is the fulcrum upon which Fire and Water, Wood and Metal balance. Fire rises; Water descends. Wood expands outward; Metal contracts inward. These are the movements of life, the eternal push and pull, yin and yang expressed in motion.

But what holds these forces in balance? It is Earth. Without Earth, Fire climbs too high, Water sinks too low, Wood stretches without boundary, and Metal collapses into constriction. Earth is the harmonizer.

Imagine the arrows: up and down, in and out. Their struggle is like the beach ball pressed beneath the water, trying to escape upward, held down by gravity. It is Earth that steadies this tension, Earth that grants harmony to the four directions of energy.

Harmony and Tranquility

All movement seeks balance. This is true not only in energy but in sound, temperature, and relationship. As a pentatonic scale must be tuned—not too sharp, not too flat—so must the human being find the center. When the Earth is steady, the notes of your life ring clear, harmonious, tranquil.

Tranquility is the key. Without it, Fire becomes rage, Water becomes fear, Wood becomes aggression, Metal becomes grief. With Earth at the center, each finds its rightful place.

The Practice of Grounding

But how shall we embody this truth? Philosophy without practice is like seed without soil. The ancients knew the answer before language was born: When the storm rages, get down and be still. When fear overwhelms, when anger consumes, when anxiety scatters—get down, and be silent.

In the human body there are sacred gates: Kidney-1, the bubbling well at the soles of the feet, and Huiyin at the perineum. These are the prongs of your extension cord, the means by which you plug into the Earth. Squatting is the simplest and most profound act of grounding. It compresses the body, pumps the interstitial fluids, and flushes stagnation. It humbles the spirit, returning you to your root.

Do not underestimate this act. Modernity seduces us into chairs and cushions, but Nature designed us to squat, to rise, to sit upon the ground. Every squat is a prayer to Earth.

Inhale, sink, release the turbidity. Exhale, rise, gather stability. Inhale, descend like the leaf; Exhale, stand like the tree.

Stability, Mobility, Grace

True wealth is not in riches but in stability, mobility, and grace. To walk without fear of falling, to rise from the earth with ease, to sit in dignity at any age—this is wealth. Without grounding, you lose your feet, your knees, your hips, your spine. With grounding, even in old age, you squat down to pick up your grandchild, sit to eat at the fire, rise to meet the dawn.

Comfort breeds weakness; discipline sustains vitality. The caged tiger, though fed and pampered, loses its power. So too with us. Stress is the forge that keeps the body awake. Pain is the price of training; rotting is the price of neglect.

A Simple Prescription

So, let us return to the simple practice:

1. Squat three, nine, or more times each day.
2. Feel the soles of your feet root into Earth.
3. Drop the tailbone; connect to the ground.
4. Inhale, descend, release.
5. Exhale, rise, gather.

In time, this becomes as natural as brushing your teeth. It is not a destination but a dance. Train your body to remember, and your spirit will follow.

Closing

Thus we return to the center. Earth governs the balance of Fire and Water, Wood and Metal. Earth is stability, humility, and harmony. Remember: when the storm of life shakes you, when excess Fire or fear or grief overtakes you—get down, be silent, and return to Earth.

This is the way of balance. This is the way of Tao.

Grandmaster Leoni
Gray Wolf Mountain

The Path This Season

The year turns through eight steps, two to a season.

Late Summer is Earth, the reckoning inside the Summer movement. It carries the third step, Overcome Doe Chi, seeing through your own self-protective fog.

It is paired with the fourth, Leave Good Seeds, action that bears consequence beyond the moment.

Returning to center is what makes both possible.

You cannot see through your own fog while being carried by it. You cannot choose what you will leave behind while being pulled in every direction.

First, return to Earth.

Then look again.

Sit With This

What pulls you away from your center most reliably?

Do not explain it.

Do not defend it.

See it.

The Transmission ends here.

Members of the Circle continue below with this week’s Walk.

Read it once, slowly.

The self knowing man is unassailable. — The Gray Wolf

Transmission from Gray Wolf Mountain

As we enter the late summer season, we continue our celestial journey around the sun, guided by repetition, rotation, contemplation, meditation, and observation. Each season reveals its own rhythm, its own song. Those who harmonize with this rhythm move effortlessly with the Tao.

In Tao, we do not seek to change what is. The Way does not resist. It understands, it aligns, and in doing so, it is sustained. What cannot coexist with the Tao is naturally dissolved, like leaves returning to earth in autumn winds.

The source of suffering arises from resistance, attachment, and judgment, attempts to reshape the formless into our own illusions. Let go. Observe the cycles of nature, not the fabrications of man. Watch the garden. Study the forest. Here, Heaven and Earth reveal the Way with silent eloquence.

In early summer, the seeds of spring flowered into form. Now, in late summer, the fruits emerge. This is the season of manifestation, the peak of our outward expression.

What you see around you now is the harvest of your intention. The quality of your reality is the mirror of your efforts. Do not judge. Observe.

This is the zenith, the still point between ascent and descent. Like a ball thrown into the sky, the highest point is still before it descends. So too is late summer, the apex before the inward turn of autumn.

If your vision was clear and your labor sincere, the fruits will be sweet. If not, now is not the time for blame, but for correction. The Tao grants us endless chances to return.

The nature of Earth is groundedness, nourishment, and stability. It is the mother that feeds, holds, and protects. In this season, we are invited to embody these virtues, to become the nurturer, the mountain, the fertile soil.

But beware the maladapted Earth. Worry, blame, and insecurity arise when one feels disconnected from abundance. Those who did not sow cannot reap. Let this not be cause for despair, but fuel for change.

What is before you is what you have earned, not what others have withheld. This truth is the root of all freedom. If it is your doing, then it is also in your power to transform.

Abundance is not for hoarding, but for sharing. One cannot offer what one does not possess. So cultivate enoughness, not for pride, but for peace.

As metal approaches, we prepare to let go. But first, we stabilize. We gather. We give thanks. We sit with the moment, the full fruit in hand. This is now. This is Earth.

May your gaze be steady, your heart at rest, and your mind free from delusion. Walk barefoot upon the earth, and you shall remember what you are made of.

— Grandmaster L

Sit with this. The season asks one honest question: what has your labor actually grown? Do not judge. Observe.

For your records, if you would like to print a copy:

Graywolf Earth Transmission 1

70.8KB ∙ PDF file

Download
Download

If you’re not sure where to start, start with the Gray Wolf Legend.

The next steps are on the last page.

Gray Wolf: The Legend

Collecting Maps

Inside the den of the wolves is a room.

Nic Peterson

Inside the den of the wolves is a room.

The walls are covered in maps and pictures from every corner of the world.
The shelves are full of books about the ocean and the wildlife.

The white wolves dream of it, and grieve that it lies so far away.
The black wolves pick fights over who knows the most about the ocean.
None of them have ever been wet.

The gray wolf withholds all judgment about an ocean he has never stepped in.

A map is a map. The letters, the essays, the material that shows up here — all of it stays where it is, offered to anyone who wants to read.

Alongside that, if you want to support Gray Wolf, there is now a way to do it. It’s a paid Substack tier. It doesn’t unlock anything. Every word on Gray Wolf is still free.

Here’s what the support actually does.

Gray Wolf — operating publicly as Wolf Zen LLC — is building locations and infrastructure to teach this material to the people who most need it and least can afford it.

Families. Most of us didn’t learn any of this until we were forty, and we’ve been paying for that late arrival ever since. We’re building places where a different version of that timeline becomes possible.

All proceeds from the paid Substack tier go to that work.

Annual subscribers receive a Lineage Coin by mail. Monthly subscribers receive one after twelve months of continuous support. Without the body, no further work stabilizes.

The body is where the rest of the work begins.

PRINCIPLE

Form precedes formless.

The world of form is the training ground for the world of the formless. The practitioner who cannot tolerate correction at the gross, tangible level cannot tolerate it at the subtle level either.

This is why the body comes first. The physical body is the surface where reality writes its corrections. The practitioner who has not learned to read those corrections, or tolerate being corrected, at this level will not be able to read them or accept correction anywhere else.

The “strong” body is not the same as Jing.

The strong body may be one expression of Jing.

It may also be its absence.

EXAMPLE

A practitioner may build the body to the limit of what conventional training teaches.

He may become the strongest man in the village. He may earn medals. He may hold records. By every measure the village uses for strength, he may be at the top of the bell curve.

And in time his joints will begin to fail. He will need to nap in the afternoons. His mind will tire by midday. His creative work will narrow into short windows surrounded by long fatigue.

The conventional Jing work, taken to its limit, did not produce what Jing is supposed to produce.

This is not the practitioner’s failure.

The practitioner did the work the village taught.

The village could not see the cycle, therefore, the village did not have the whole training.

The training thats often missing presents itself in lack of mobility, stability and grace.

The practitioner who adds these to the village’s training begins to recover. The joints quiet. The naps disappear. Cognitive clarity returns and lasts longer each year.

The repair is not more of what failed.

The repair is what the village did not have.

For the energy to run efficiently through any physical body, it must run unimpeded.

· · ·

APPLICATION

Sleep. Strength. Nutrition. Posture. Movement. Discipline. These are the visible parts of Jing.

Beneath them: the older, primordial practices. The breath we take for granted. The energy work that has no short term, visible reward.

The serious practitioner studies both layers. The visible work is necessary, as it makes the body capable of carrying the older work. The older work makes the body capable of carrying the rest of the apparatus.

The body is the first thing the room reads.

Long before you speak.

And it is the first thing to cultivate and/or restore.

REFLECTION

Where is your Jing intact? Where is it failing?

Are you treating the failures as fitness problems, or as something the older training would address?

What part of the apparatus have you skipped because the village did not teach it?

Do this reflection before Part III and you will get more out of it.

Gray Wolf

The Journey begins here

Get Part III Direct To Your Inbox:

The season is turning

You can feel it before you can name it.

Nic Peterson

You can feel it before you can name it. The light is changing. The body is waking up. Plans feel possible because the world itself is in a posture of beginning. The work of spring is to look at the year ahead, choose a direction, and commit to it — not in the abstract, but specifically enough that the body knows where it is going.

Most people do not do this. The reasons vary. The year started faster than expected. The first quarter swallowed the time that was supposed to be for thinking. There was a whisper of an aim in March and then April happened and the whisper got buried under everything else. By now — late spring, the light long, the days warm — the question of what the year is actually for has been quietly set down somewhere. It is still there, unanswered.

This is worth noticing now, because the season is about to change.

· · ·

Summer is the season of fire. The year is at peak energy — the body runs hotter, the heart opens more easily, the days stretch long enough that almost anything feels possible. This is not metaphor. It is the observable shape of the season, and the body knows it before the mind does.

Summer also has a fork. The same energy that brings a person alive can consume them.

An aimed summer feels like joy. The energy is high and it is moving along a line that was chosen. The work compounds. The body recognizes that what it is spending itself on is what it actually wanted to spend itself on. Joy is quieter than people expect — it is not the loud thing. It is the body’s recognition that its energy is being spent in the direction it wanted to go.

An unaimed summer feels like anxiety. The energy is the same temperature, but there is no line for it to run along. It goes into whatever is loudest. New projects that were not there in April. Reactive motion. The social frenzy of everyone else’s summer. The body burns at the same heat as the joyful one, but nothing accumulates. The fire produces motion that goes nowhere.

Most people do not realize this is a choice. They wake up in July already in one state or the other, and the state they are in feels like fate.

It is not fate. It is the consequence of whether the year was met deliberately when it began, and whether it gets recalibrated now, while there is still time.

· · ·

What does it mean to aim, in the few weeks of spring that remain?

It is simpler than people make it. A few practices, none of them requiring a teacher or a retreat or a particular setting. They can be done from a kitchen table.

Name what you are aiming the summer at. Not the whole year. Not your life. The summer. One direction, specific enough that you would recognize whether you were moving toward it or away from it. If you cannot name it in one sentence, you have not aimed yet — you have a feeling about a direction, which is a different thing.

Build the conditions for the heart to open. Summer is the season the body wants to be alive in. It cannot do that on a diet of screens, fluorescent light, and indoor air. The conditions are simple — sun, sleep, food that came from the ground recently, the company of people whose presence you actually like, a daily reason to move the body. Most people know what these are. The work is not knowing them. The work is arranging the life so they actually happen.

Let yourself express. Summer is the season of expression. Say the thing you have been not saying. Make the call you have been not making. Take the trip. Plant the seed. The fire wants to come out somewhere — give it a deliberate place to go before it finds an undeliberate one.

Notice which side of the fork you are on, and adjust. The body will tell you. A summer running on joy feels like spaciousness, even when busy. A summer running on anxiety feels tight, even when the calendar is empty. If you wake up in mid-July tight, the answer is not more activity. The answer is to stop and re-aim.

None of this requires you to be anywhere in particular. Summer can be met from a porch in any state. The work belongs to the season, not to the place.

· · ·

Some people will meet summer alone, well, from their own kitchen tables. Others, by temperament or by circumstance, want a few days in the company of people doing the same work, with the year deliberately set aside for it.

Twice a year, around the longest day and the shortest, we open the seasonal gathering beyond the inner circle of the path. The summer one is approaching: five days on the north shore of Kauai, June 17 through 21, with Grandmaster Mike Leone and a small group of practitioners and operators. The first two days are the wider gathering. The remainder is the committed portion, smaller and quieter.

Transmission members and Foundry members will already have, or will soon receive, their details through their own channels. If you are in either of those circles and have questions, your concierge is the door. If you are not, the gathering will return — it always does, at the same time, in the same place, every year. There will be a way in next time if it matters to you.

· · ·

Whether you are coming to Hawaii in June or staying exactly where you are, the season is doing the same thing.

Spring is closing. The light is shifting. The fire is on its way. The only question worth answering, right now, is whether you have aimed the year — or whether the next eight weeks of high energy are going to burn through you without producing anything you wanted.

There is still time. Not much.

Enough.

Aim before fire.

—

Gray Wolf
Body. Mind. It can be described.

It can be described two ways. Each way teaches what the other cannot. You will need both.

· · ·

THE FIRST IMAGE

Imagine a flashlight.

A flashlight has three parts. The casing, which holds everything in place. The wiring, which carries the current. The bulb, which converts the current into light.

The parts are in order. The casing comes first because nothing else can be installed without it. The wiring comes second because no current can flow without something to carry it. The bulb comes last because it is the part that does the visible work, but it cannot do the work without the two parts beneath it.

Most people who buy a flashlight that does not work try to fix the bulb. The bulb is the part they can see. The bulb is the part that produced the failure they noticed. So the bulb is the part they replace.

They replace the bulb. The flashlight still does not work. They conclude the new bulb is also broken.

The bulb was almost never the problem.

The problem was the casing, corroded by years of neglect, no longer making clean contact with the wiring. The current never reaches the bulb at all.

The flashlight teaches the order. Hardware, wiring, light. In sequence. Each part requiring the one before it. The brightest bulb cannot light a flashlight whose casing is broken.

This is the first image you will need.

· · ·

THE SECOND IMAGE

Imagine a glass of water.

Imagine sand at the bottom.

Imagine a diamond, dropped in.

Stir the glass. The sand lifts. The water clouds. The diamond disappears. The glass becomes indistinguishable from any other cloudy glass on any other shelf.

Set the glass down.

Wait.

The sand begins to settle. The water begins to clear. And then, slowly, the diamond returns to view — exactly where it was the whole time, never moved, never changed, only obscured.

The work was not to make the diamond. The diamond was placed there at the beginning, by something other than you.

The work was to still the water.

· · ·

The diamond was always there.

That is the second image. That is the deeper claim the apparatus discussion will make over and over again. You are not building a light from nothing. You are clearing the conditions for a light that was placed in you before you arrived.

· · ·

PRINCIPLE

Both images describe the same apparatus.

The flashlight teaches the order of the work. Hardware, wiring, light. The diamond teaches what is being revealed when the work is done. The light that turns on is the diamond becoming visible.

They were never two different things.

They are two ways of describing the same revelation.

· · ·

APPLICATION

Hold both images.

When the question is what to do, return to the flashlight. The light is back. The calendar is filling up. There is a particular restlessness to the second half of April — a sense that the year is opening up and something is being asked of you.

The instinct is to start. Launch the project. Hire the person. Book the trip. Begin the regimen.

Most people will spend the next eight weeks pushing in five directions at once. By the second week of June, most of it will have come apart.

Not because the projects were bad. Because the projects were aimed at nothing in particular. And without an aim, the energy scatters.

This is the failure mode of spring. It is so common we have stopped noticing it.

The symptom

There is a specific kind of tired that shows up in May.

Not the deep tired of winter. Not the hollow tired of autumn. Wired tired. The body trying to move forward while the direction has not been set. The nervous system is committed. The rudder isn’t.

If you are in this condition, you already know it.

You are moving fast. The motion is not accumulating. You finish each day busy and uncertain. The calendar looks productive. The gut says otherwise.

You are tired in a way that sleep does not fix.

This is what motion without aim feels like in the body.

What spring is for

Spring is not the season to start. Spring is the season to aim.

The oldest traditions that mapped the body to the seasons noticed something observable. In spring, the eyes work differently. They open. They take in more light. They look farther.

The body, emerging from its interior season, sends its attention outward through the eyes first.

This is why spring feels the way it does. The body is, quite literally, trying to look.

What it is asking you to do is the discipline that follows from looking. The trained capacity to hold attention on what is real. To see clearly. And only then, to commit.

Aiming is not a decision. Aiming is a capacity.

Most people have never trained it. They think they aim when they set goals. They don’t. They think they aim when they write vision statements. They don’t.

A goal without the trained capacity to see is an arrow shot at a target you cannot locate.

The arrow and the fire

There is an image worth holding as April moves toward May.

The archer draws the bow in the cool air of March, April, and May. The draw is slow. The eyes do their work. The target comes into focus. The tension is held.

The release is not spring’s work. Release is summer’s work.

An archer does not draw and release at the same time. The draw has its own season. The release has its own season.

The arrow does not care about your enthusiasm. It will go where the eyes sent it — measured at the moment of draw, not the moment of release.

The arrow drawn in spring lands in summer. The fire in July releases what the eyes pointed at in April.

You cannot aim at the moment of release. By then the draw is over. The tension is leaving the bow. The arrow has already committed to its line.

This is why spring cannot be skipped.

The summer that follows a scattered spring is a summer of heat without power. The fire is lit. There is nothing aimed to release. The operator pushes harder in July and wonders why the effort is not producing.

The effort is producing. The production is going where the eyes sent it.

The eyes, in April, were looking at nothing.

The measure

You will know spring has been honored when the summer that follows feels like release instead of scramble.

The aim is clear. The team can state it. The people closest to you know what you are building. The decisions get faster. The work compounds.

You are not doing more. You are doing less.

The things that don’t align have been let go of. The things that remain are connected to the aim.

There is a calm to it that most operators have never experienced. Because most operators have never taken spring seriously. They treat it as a month to get busy in.

Taken seriously, spring is the month in which the year decides itself.

What this week asks of you

You have eight weeks of spring left. That is enough.

If you are already moving, the correction is harder than it sounds.

Stop.

Not permanently. Long enough to aim.

The refusal to act while the pressure to act is mounting — that refusal, held for as long as is necessary to get clear — is what separates the person running their year from the person whose year is running them.

Everyone feels the pressure. Most people spend it. A smaller number hold it long enough to convert it into direction.

Those are the people whose years compound.

This is the hardest discipline of the season.

Everything else is easier than this.

The bow is in your hands. The arrow is nocked. The eyes do the rest.

Seasonal Intelligence is the long companion to the year. The spring chapter is waiting.

Seasonal Intelligence — the book

.

Gray Wolf

THE SEASON DOESN'T CARE WHAT YOU PLANNED

There is a question so obvious it goes unasked.

Nic Peterson

There is a question so obvious it goes unasked.

Why do you eat soup in winter and watermelon in summer?

You don’t think about it. The season tells you. Some part of you, older than your ambitions, already knows how to listen.

Now ask yourself:

Why are you running summer campaigns in winter?

The Intelligence You Already Have

This is not a new system.

Five seasons. Five elements. Five different instructions.

Wood rises in spring. Fire burns in summer. Earth integrates in late summer. Metal cuts in autumn. Water stills in winter.

Each season is not a temperature change. It is a different operating instruction. And the cost of running the wrong one is not failure — it is exhaustion. Everything works, but everything costs more than it should.

Spring — 木

The seed breaks ground.

Spring does not ask for speed. It asks for direction.

The archer holds his breath before the release. The intention is set before the arrow moves. Aim first — everything else follows.

The most expensive mistake is not moving too slow. It is moving fast in the wrong direction.

Summer — 火

The window is open.

Go through it.

Late Summer — 土

The branches grew fast in summer.

Now the roots must catch them.

Turn the wins into systems. Deepen what formed in motion. Integrate before you scale — or the tree falls under its own weight.

Autumn — 金

Metal cuts.

Not cruelly. Precisely.

Which offer is underperforming? Which relationship costs more than it returns? The tree does not mourn its leaves. It is preparing for the season that requires stillness.

What you carry into winter, you carry until spring.

Winter — 水

Stillness is not wasted time.

It is the operating system being rebuilt.

The clarity that arrives in silence is worth more than any tactic forced in noise. The wolf does not run in every season. He rests — so that when the run comes, it means something.

The Mistake

Most people collapse the seasons into one.

They run at full capacity in winter and wonder why everything costs more. They sit still in summer and wonder why opportunity passes. They scale before they integrate. They cut before they harvest.

Fighting the season is not discipline.

It is a failure of diagnosis.

The Map Was Already Drawn

In the last letter, we named three layers.

Structure. Field. Season.

Season shapes the field. The field acts upon the structure.

Most people spend their lives adjusting the sail. Very few ever look up to ask what time of year the ocean is.

If this resonates, bookmark:

https://seasonalintelligence.com/

And come back to it often.

The season is already turning.

You are already in it.

The mountain still stands. The fire still burns.

And the Gray Wolves know what season they are in.

The Transmission is available by request.

If you’re ready, you’ll know.

The Book is Live.

The Legend

Nic Peterson

The Legend is on Amazon now.

It’s a fable. And the fish.

The sailor believes he commands direction. The fish believes it swims freely. Both are correct. Both are incomplete.

To understand reality, you must understand the boat, the water, and the stars. And the fish within the water.

Layer One: Jing — Structure

Before there is wind, before there are tides, there is structure.

The sailor must build a boat. If the wood is weak, it cracks. If the hull leaks, it sinks. If the sail tears, progress stops.

This is Jing. Matter. Form. Physical law. Newtonian cause and effect.

In the fish’s world, this is biology. Strong scales. Healthy gills. Conditioned muscle. This is personal karma — what you have built through repetition. Your habits. Your training. Your discipline.

You are responsible for this layer.

The fish that neglects its body will struggle in any water. The sailor who builds carelessly will fail in any sea.

But structure alone does not determine outcome. Because nothing exists in isolation.

Layer Two: Qi — The Field

Now the boat touches water. Now the fish enters the aquarium.

There is wind. There are currents. There is temperature. There is pressure.

This is Qi. Not matter — movement. A dynamic field of expansion and contraction, rise and fall, heat and cold. Forces that act upon structure continuously, whether the structure is ready or not.

The wind may blow south while you wish to go north. The other fish may stir the gravel, clouding the water you depend on.

You can be perfectly built and still face resistance.

Relational karma lives here. Other humans are wind. Their emotions, their fear, their ambition, their unresolved wounds — all of it moves through the field and acts upon you whether you invited it or not.

You cannot eliminate wind. But you can adjust the sail. You cannot stop currents. But you can angle the rudder. You cannot silence all the fish. But you can reposition in clearer water.

Qi demands adaptation. Those who ignore it exhaust themselves fighting tides. Those who read it conserve energy. This is where leadership exists — not in force, but in navigation.

Layer Three: Shen — The Season

But the wind itself is not random.

Storm systems follow pressure. Tides follow the moon. Seasons follow the sun. And the aquarium can be poisoned not by the fish — but by a failing filter no single creature controls.

This is Shen. Large cycles that shape the field itself. Economic eras. Cultural winters. Technological springs. Generational resets.

You may build a perfect boat. You may master sail and rudder. But when winter storms dominate the ocean, navigation changes. You may be a disciplined fish. But when the ecosystem shifts, survival requires patience more than effort.

Universal karma lives here. It is not personal. It is not relational. It is seasonal.

Shen influences Qi. Qi influences Jing. Season shapes wind. Wind acts upon the vessel. Aquarium determines water. Water determines what the fish can do.

The influence cascades downward. Which means understanding must move upward.

The Common Mistake

Most people collapse all three layers into one.

If they fail, they assume they are weak. If business contracts, they assume incompetence. If relationships dissolve, they assume worthlessness.

But sometimes the boat is solid, the wind is chaotic, and winter has arrived. These are different problems. Each requires a different response.

When something feels wrong, the first question is not what did I do. It is which layer is acting upon me.

Is this my structure — something I built or neglected? Is this the field between people — turbulence I can reposition within? Or is this the season itself — a cycle larger than any individual effort?

If it is structure, strengthen yourself. If it is relational turbulence, reposition. If it is universal winter, conserve and endure.

That is not resignation. That is diagnosis. And correct diagnosis is the beginning of wisdom.

The Hierarchy of Influence

You have direct influence over Jing. You have partial influence over Qi. You have almost no influence over Shen.

Yet the higher layer exerts the most influence.

This humbles the arrogant and empowers the victim. You are not helpless. But you are not supreme. Wisdom is not domination.

It is calibration.

The Gray Wolf Principle

Do not fight winter as if it were personal.

Do not blame wind as if it were fate.

Do not neglect your hull while studying the stars.

Build the vessel. Read the field. Respect the season.

This is mastery. Not spiritual escapism. Not brute force.

Navigation.

The mountain still stands.
The fire still burns.
And the Gray Wolves still climb.

The Transmission is available by request.

If you’re ready, you’ll know.

TRANSMISSION FROM GRAY WOLF MOUNTAIN: IGNITION

TRANSMISSION FROM GRAY WOLF MOUNTAIN

Nic Peterson

Friend,

What I’m about to share with you isn’t content.

It’s a transmission.

Each week, my Grandmaster writes a piece like this—rooted in Daoist principle, Five Element Theory, and the rhythm of nature—and shares it with those of us walking the path. Tide, the wise gray wolf, sat at the edge of a high ridge, his blue eyes scanning the horizon as the wind whispered through the trees. His calm presence was a beacon of stillness, much like the energy he would soon teach the young wolves about—the ebb and flow of Yin and Yang.

The pack had gathered for a rare event—a party held by a neighboring wolf pack. As the evening wore on, the atmosphere shifted from the quiet stillness of the beginning to the rising energy of excitement. Tide had noticed Jasper and Ember among the crowd, their contrasting personalities already evident.

Jasper, ever the challenger, surged through the throngs of wolves, pushing boundaries and testing limits, while Ember, the gentle spark, flitted between conversations, her calm demeanor radiating warmth. They were opposites in many ways, and yet they continued to grow closer over the years.

Tide knew it was time to intervene.

He approached the pair, watching them as they stood on the edge of the party, feeling the rising intensity of the energy around them. The music had grown louder, the laughter more exuberant, and the air felt thick with unspoken tensions.

“Yang of Yang,” Tide said softly,

“Let’s get out of here.”

Jasper turned, the fire in his eyes still burning with the excitement of the party. Ember, always attuned to the subtleties, felt the shift in the air. It was time to go, before things began to unravel.

They followed Tide back to Gray Wolf Mountain in silence, the long shadows of the forest growing longer as they made their way home. The cool night air seemed to quiet the buzzing in their minds, and as they reached the base of the mountain, Tide paused, turning to face them.

The pack had gathered in their den, and Tide settled down with Jasper and Ember. “There is a lesson in what we just experienced,” he began. “A lesson about energy, about the cycles that move through everything in the world—through our lives, our relationships, and through nature itself.”

Tide began to speak of the cycle that water goes through, explaining how energy—just like water—shifts through different phases. “Energy doesn’t stay in one place,” he said. “It rises, peaks, falls, and then returns to stillness. It’s a cycle that repeats endlessly.”

The Water Cycle: A Lesson in The Movement of Energy

<a class="image-link Yin of Yin – Still Water on the Ground (Before the Party)Tide’s voice was steady, his words carrying the weight of experience. “At the start, before anything happens, there is stillness. Think of the lake at the base of the mountain—calm and undisturbed. This is where everything begins. Energy is dormant here. Before the party began, this was the state we were in—preparation, potential waiting to unfold.”

Ember’s eyes softened as she reflected on this. She knew this phase well—calm and peaceful, a time to prepare and ground herself. For Jasper, though, the stillness felt uncomfortable. He was always itching to move, to act, to break the silence. But he stayed quiet, sensing that there was something deeper here to learn.

2. Yang of Yin – Evaporation (Energy Rising)“Energy starts to rise, much like how water turns into vapor when the sun heats it. It’s the first stirrings of movement—subtle, but inevitable,” Tide continued. “The energy at the party was just beginning to stir. The first guests had arrived, and the atmosphere was buzzing, but it wasn’t quite time for full action.”

Jasper, always eager to take the lead, felt the pull of this phase. He could feel the energy building around him. His instincts told him to dive in, to feel the rush, to push forward. Ember, on the other hand, watched more closely. The energy was rising, yes, but she knew it wasn’t the peak. She waited, observing how the party would unfold.

3. Yang of Yang – The Clouds (Peak Energy at the Party)“Then comes the peak,” Tide said, his voice rising with the intensity of the memory. “The energy is at its full potential, like the clouds reaching their highest point. At the party, this was the moment when everyone was alive with excitement, dancing, laughing, and speaking over each other. The music blared, the room was full, and it felt like nothing could go wrong.”

Jasper’s eyes lit up at this moment. He thrived in this phase—he was the life of the party, feeding off the energy. Ember, however, felt the shift, the tension. The energy was high, but there was a sense of instability that grew beneath the surface. She felt it in her bones—the energy couldn’t sustain itself forever.

4. Yin of Yang – Rainfall (Energy Falling)“But as always, energy must fall,” Tide continued, his eyes knowing. “What goes up must come down. The clouds cool, and rain begins to fall, just as the party starts to wind down. People began leaving, some slowed by drinking, others simply tired. The energy shifted from peak to descent.”

Jasper’s enthusiasm waned as the excitement started to die down. He had been caught in the rush of the Yang, but now, as things began to fade, he felt uncertain. Ember, however, was more at ease. She understood the cyclical nature of energy and was able to move gracefully into this phase, ready for the quiet.

Tide reminded them that even though parties can give you energy, especially in the yang of yin and yang of yang phases, they can just easily take it from you in the yin of yang phase(s).

5. Back to Yin of Yin – Still Water (The Party Is Over)“Finally, we return to stillness,” Tide finished. “The party is over, the last guest has left, and the energy is still. The space is empty, but that is not a bad thing. It’s a chance to reflect, to learn, and to prepare for the next cycle. Energy always comes back, in new ways, when the time is right.”

Jasper felt the weight of this lesson. He had been so caught up in the Yang, in the excitement and the rush, that he hadn’t realized the consequences of staying just a little too long.

Jasper and Ember both sat in appreciation, understanding why Tide had told them to leave when they did. To this day, Jasper and Ember are hyper-attuned to the cycle of energy and use “yang of yang” as code word for “it’s time to get out of here”.

The Cycle of Energy in Nature and Life

Tide explained that just as water shifts through these phases, so too does everything in life. The seasons change, relationships ebb and flow, and personal growth mirrors the same transitions.

“We are no different than the water,” Tide said. “We move through the cycles of Yin and Yang. The key is to understand where you are in the cycle and to act accordingly. When you know when to rise, when to peak, when to fall, and when to rest, you will move through life with balance.”

Jasper looked over at Ember, his restless energy now tempered by understanding. Ember, in turn, found herself nodding, grateful for the stillness that allowed her to reflect.

They both knew that this was not the end of the lesson but a beginning. The next phase would come, and with it, new opportunities for growth. They understood now that they were not bound to one phase forever; they had the power to move through the cycle with intention - and learn to recognize what phase of the cycle they were in at any given moment.

As Tide rose to leave, he looked back at them with a soft smile. “Energy is always in motion and it always follows the same cycle. Now that you’ve seen it once, you’ll start to see it everywhere.”

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" The cycles of Yin and Yang, the flow of energy, became a framework they could use in every aspect of their lives—from the quiet moments of reflection to the moments of intense action.

What mattered was knowing when to move, when to rest, and when to embrace the full force of the cycle. And in doing so, they became more balanced wolves—better equipped to navigate the ever-changing world around them.

Understanding the cycle of energy gave them the ability to “see around corners” or “into the matrix.”

In The End…

Together, they stood on the mountain, watching the sun set in the distance. The world was in motion, just as they were—moving through the cycles of life, understanding when to rise, when to peak, and when to fall. And as the moon began to rise, they knew that the cycle was never-ending—it was their journey, always in progress, always transforming.

<a energy.

Yang of Yin: The beginning of transformation, the rising energy, the moment before full activation.

Yang of Yang: The peak of energy, intensity, and full expression.

Yin of Yang: The descent, where energy stabilizes and slows, before returning to stillness.

Back to Yin of Yin: Stillness, rest, reflection, and preparation for the next cycle.

LESSONS & PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Like water transitions through Yin of Yin, Yang of Yin, Yang of Yang, Yin of Yang, and back to Yin of Yin, we can apply this framework to various aspects of reality. By understanding the phases of yin yang, you can see where anything is in its life cycle and that can help you discern what YOU should do.

1. Fire and Heat (Thermal Energy)

Yin of Yin: Cold ashes, a completely burned-out fire, dormant embers.

Yang of Yin: The first sparks of a flame, kindling catching fire.

Yang of Yang: A roaring, active fire at full intensity.

Yin of Yang: The fire starts to settle; embers remain, but the flames weaken.

Return to Yin of Yin: The fire completely dies down, and the ashes cool.

Application: This is a metaphor for momentum in business, relationships, or personal motivation—starting cold, gaining energy, reaching a peak, and eventually cooling down.

2. Human Life Cycle (Birth to Death)

Yin of Yin: The moment before conception—potential energy in stillness.

Yang of Yin: Conception, gestation, and early childhood—growth begins.

Yang of Yang: Peak adulthood—full energy, strength, and activity.

Yin of Yang: Aging, slowing down—wisdom increases while physical strength fades.

Return to Yin of Yin: Death, returning to stillness, but leaving an imprint (legacy).

Application: This can be seen in life planning, leadership, and the importance of knowing when to act and when to rest.

3. Economic & Financial Cycles

Yin of Yin: A recession or market crash—investors are fearful, no movement.

Yang of Yin: Early recovery—smart investors accumulate assets.

Yang of Yang: Market boom—high optimism, rising prices, economic expansion.

Yin of Yang: Market peak—overconfidence, speculation, slowing growth.

Return to Yin of Yin: Economic downturn or crash—excess collapses, resetting the cycle.

Application: Investing and business cycles follow natural energy flows—knowing the stage helps predict trends.

4. Relationships & Emotional Cycles

Yin of Yin: Emotional withdrawal, solitude—lack of connection.

Yang of Yin: Attraction and early interest—energy starts moving.

Yang of Yang: Passion, excitement—strong emotions, peak of connection.

Yin of Yang: Stabilization—less intensity, deeper understanding.

Return to Yin of Yin: Detachment, cooling off, or separation.

Application: Recognizing these phases helps in understanding relationship dynamics, preventing burnout, and fostering long-term connection.

5. War & Strategy (The Art of Victory)

Yin of Yin: Absolute stillness—preparation, deception, waiting.

Yang of Yin: Small movements—gathering intelligence, testing the opponent.

Yang of Yang: Full battle engagement—direct confrontation.

Yin of Yang: Retreat or consolidation—regrouping, conserving energy.

Return to Yin of Yin: War ends, the battlefield is silent—strategy resets.

Application: Sun Tzu’s Art of War emphasizes this cycle: “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” Knowing when to move and when to wait is the essence of power.

Everything Moves in Cycles

Everything—Qi, matter, emotions, economics, relationships—moves through this five-stage process. Mastering these transitions allows one to anticipate and align with natural rhythms rather than resist them.

The Journey Around The Sun and The Gray Wolf

Each relationship or engagement has it’s own mini-cycle that echoes the one above.

The universe also has cycles we call “Journey Around The Sun”.

Gray Wolf and our partner companies will be flipping the switch July 1 to fully integrate The Journey Around the Sun - a structure to teach, learn, grow, build, and play in alignment with the season.

To celebrate this, The Gray Wolf book set will likely be published in July. If you’re a subscriber to The Gray Wolf (this publication) you’ll get notified if you’re interested.

Live to learn. So if we take this cycle:

Good times make weak people

Weak people make bad times

Bad times make strong people

Strong people make good times

It takes 60 years for someone to experience a full cycle.

Now, here's why that’s interesting to me:

Dr. Jeff Spencer has shared with me many times that someone cannot truly become a cornerman until they are at least 60 years old—or, as he puts it, “they’ve taken 60 trips around the sun.” His reasoning is simple: a person cannot truly see around corners and understand the extremes of humanity until they’ve lived through those extremes themselves. For some reason, 60 years is the marker he’s observed for when someone can truly get it.

A couple of months ago, Grandmaster Mike came out to dinner and shared why 2024, being the year of the Wood Dragon, is significant. The last Wood Dragon year? 1964. 60 years ago. You can find more about what he says in his deep dive about the Wood Yang Dragon here.

What’s Concerning to Me:

A lot of young, highly motivated, incredibly driven people are surrounding themselves with people like them—young, ambitious, and highly motivated. They’re in total Black Wolf mode—which might be perfectly appropriate for where they are right now.

BUT...

I believe it’s wise to keep some cornermen around. Don’t discount the people around you who are over 60. They might not be able to turn on their iPad or use a computer as easily as you can, but they have something far more valuable: experience.

Disregarding their wisdom because you think it’s irrelevant or “outdated” can be a fatal mistake.

And don’t discount Grandma. She probably has more wisdom than you think.

A Final Thought

Every time you think someone older than you "just doesn’t get it," remember: it’s likely your experience that is lacking, not theirs. You don’t have to agree with everything they say, but don’t be so quick to assume that their understanding is flawed. In fact, remember how often mom and dad were wrong—until you lived through it yourself and realized they weren’t so wrong after all.

Subscribe now

Gray Wolf Directory Can Be Found Here

Invite your friends to read The Gray Wolf

Live to Learn.
