I had sat across from them before, just earlier this year, when I was pregnant and waiting for my first scan. Peyton was in the chair on the left, and I was in the one on the right. And now, months later, I was facing them again.

Not literally head-on, but in the way you face something when you realize you can’t quite avoid it anymore.

My first thought, naturally, was courtesy of my OCD: If I’m sitting here looking at those chairs again, does that mean it’s going to happen again? Or, really, my first thought was, I can’t sit in that exact one. It might happen again.

I knew how irrational that sounded. A chair obviously has nothing to do with what happened. But that’s the thing about fear after you’ve experienced something you never thought would happen: sometimes your brain starts looking for patterns and rules where there aren’t any.

Don’t sit there. Don’t think that. Don’t say this. Don’t get too excited. Don’t get your hopes up.

I had forgotten how much meaning I had attached to those chairs until I saw them again.

And it made me think about the two versions of me who have looked at them. The first was hopeful and scared, sitting there waiting to see my baby for the first time. The second was sitting there months later, carrying an experience that the first version of me couldn’t have imagined.

And honestly, I think that’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned through all of this: two emotions can exist at once.

I can be scared and hopeful. I can still be sad about what happened and be excited about what’s ahead. I can know that something can go wrong and still believe that something can go right. As you get older, you learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Before my miscarriage, I think I thought strength meant being confident that everything would be okay. Now I think strength is something completely different. Like, total 180.

I am so much stronger now than I was before I went through that. My gosh.

Not because I think I was supposed to go through it. Not because I’m grateful it happened. And certainly not because I think grief is some sort of character-building exercise.

I’m stronger because I know what I’m capable of surviving now. I know I can be completely heartbroken and still keep going. I know I can be afraid without letting fear make every decision for me. And I know I can hope without having a guarantee.

What is meant to be will be.

Maybe that’s what those green chairs represent to me now.

Not the pregnancy. Not the miscarriage. Not even the fear.

They represent the fact that I can look at something that once held so much fear and face it differently now.

I don’t think I’ll ever be completely fearless about any of this. And maybe I don’t need to be.

Maybe hope was never the absence of fear. Maybe hope is choosing to move forward with it.

And the funny thing is, life hasn’t just been about the things I lost. There have been so many good things. Who am I kidding—wonderful things. Things so good that if you told me in October I would have these things on the horizon, I would have been floored.

New opportunities with my job. Things falling into place that I couldn’t have planned. Just little moments that have made me really excited about what’s ahead. It makes me smile, cry, all of the above.

I don’t think everything needs to have a reason or a silver lining. But I do think there’s something really beautiful about realizing that life can hold both. There can be grief and growth. Fear and hope. An ending and a beginning.

Two things can be true at once.

I can still carry what happened to me, and I can be genuinely excited about my life. I have days where I’m unstoppable, and I have days where life—or should I be more specific and say… luteal phase!—knocks me on my ass.

I can be afraid of what comes next, and still be hopeful about it.

And I started thinking… maybe that’s what makes me feel the strongest now—not that I know everything will work out, but that I know I’ll be okay either way.

So, those green chairs.

I think I’ll let them stay right where they are.

I don’t need to avoid them anymore.

A sleek boot that works with everything: These boots are on constant rotation in my winter wardrobe. Ultra comfortable, the perfect heel height, and effortlessly versatile, they go with everything. Just saw that they’re on super sale right now for under $125.

The List

A Recipe I’m Making and Loving: Butternut Squash Soup! It is so easy, delicious, and perfect for these frigid days.

Ingredients:

• 1 butternut squash

• 1-2 red bell peppers

• 2-3 carrots

• Turmeric (I add extra for the anti-inflammatory benefits)

• Celtic sea salt

• White pepper

• Cumin

• Rosemary

• Cayenne pepper (if you like a little warmth/heat)

• 3/4 can coconut milk

• Graza Olive Oil (if you know, you know)

• Fresh herbs if you have them on hand!

Directions:

1. Peel and cube your squash, chop other veggies.

2. Arrange in a baking pan and drizzle with olive oil and herbs.

3. Bake at 400 for about 40 min or until squash is fork-tender.

4. Remove and let cool, then blend in a blender or in batches if necessary.

5. Finally, add to a large stovetop pan and stir in coconut milk until you’ve reached your desired consistency. Et voilà!

A Show I’m Streaming

I can’t believe it took me this long to finally watch Stranger Things, but I’m officially obsessed. As someone who loves getting invested in characters and their stories, this one had me hooked fast.

It manages to feel both nostalgic and thrilling, capturing childhood friendships, small-town summer energy, and that slightly eerie feeling of growing up when the world still feels big and mysterious. It’s suspenseful without being overwhelming, emotional without trying too hard, and oddly comforting all at once.

Add in the music, the ’80s details, and characters you genuinely care about and it becomes the kind of show you can rewatch and still feel completely pulled in. I was a total basket case after the finale—and it’s absolutely one I wish I could experience for the first time again.

I’m usually hesitant with suede because it feels so delicate, but this bag has completely changed my mind. It goes with everything and effortlessly transitions from day to night, making it as versatile as it is stylish.

A décor detail I’m currently obsessing over: This cordless LED lamp might just be the cutest one out there—I want it in every single color! Claire of Flaire Lighting truly knows her stuff, and I cannot get enough. The lamp instantly elevates any space, with details and ambiance that are absolutely unmatched.

A current favorite skincare product: I saw Julia Amory rave about this eye and lash cream on TT and had to try it immediately. I started with the smallest tube just to be sure, and now… I’m completely hooked. It’s done wonders for my lashes and brows, giving them a fuller, natural look without ever feeling overdone or “fixed.”

I loved it so much that I bought the full-size almost instantly—and I honestly don’t know how I lived without it before. My lashes are now long enough to touch my brows, which has literally never happened. Total game-changer.

A shoe I didn’t plan to wear as much as I do: It took me far too long to finally pull the trigger on these cult-favorite flats.
