On 24 January 2023, in the basement of a house on Summer Street in Duxbury, Massachusetts, their mother strangled them one after another with exercise resistance bands. Then she cut her wrists and neck and jumped from a second-storey window. She lived. They did not. That is the crime. Everything else in Plymouth Superior Court is an argument about what that crime is allowed to mean.

As of 2 September 2026 the jury had already told the judge twice that it could not agree. After more than twenty-eight hours it received the Tuey-Rodriguez “dynamite” instruction — the last formal shove toward a verdict — and was sent home to return on Thursday. The panel is nine women and three men. The options in front of them are first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, or not criminally responsible. A hung jury is now a live possibility. The deadlock is not a mystery of missing facts. It is a collision between a sequence of actions that look like planning and a cultural instinct that recoils from calling a mother a murderer.

The defence story is simple and emotionally efficient. Lindsay Clancy, a former labour-and-delivery nurse, was a devoted mother broken by postpartum illness, a revolving door of clinicians, and a pile of psychiatric drugs. On the afternoon of the killings a male voice took her over. She became a puppet. She did not know wrongfulness. She could not conform her conduct to the law. Therefore the law should treat her as a patient, not a killer. The prosecution story is equally simple and colder. She was depressed, anxious, exhausted, and suicidal. She wanted out. She did not trust anyone else to raise the children. She created a window of time, used it, and then tried to die. The voice arrived later, as explanation.

Both stories can be true in pieces. Only one of them can be the legal truth about that half hour.

Women’s rights were a just cause. The removal of legal disabilities—the vote, property, education, equal standing before the law—corrected real exclusions. Many of the women who fought for those gains argued from maternal duty and the distinct responsibilities of womanhood. They sought citizenship without requiring the rejection of sexed reality or the child’s claim. That settlement was coherent. It was also the one that lost.

What replaced it did not simply extend rights. It redirected the moral language of those rights toward a different end: the reconstruction of sex, the pathologising of the traditional family, and the treatment of maternal self-sacrifice as a form of oppression rather than a primary human good. That end is feminism. The women later labelled “maternal feminists” were not feminists in that later sense. They were women’s rights advocates. Honouring them requires naming them accurately and recognising that their position was the last substantial public defence of a synthesis that affirmed both equality and nature. However their mistake was to see themselves as “maternal feminists.” By tagging the label of feminist to themselves, they already lost. Feminism claimed continuity through the language of “waves” while pursuing discontinuity. The discontinuity won the institutions.

In its distinctive African American usage it was a term of situational alertness: stay conscious of racial danger, official narratives, and the practical realities of a society that had long treated Black life as lower priority. Lead Belly’s 1938 caution after the Scottsboro Boys case, the 1924 Houston Informer slang for staying on post, and the 1940 Black mine workers’ declaration that they would “stay woke” were concrete and particular. That particularity did not survive the 2010s. Introduction

The Black professional-female class that now occupies media, foundations, campuses, prosecutors’ offices, party campaigns, and journalists’ associations is not a random elite. It is a consequence of the Black feminist movement as that movement fused with mainstream feminism after the 1960s. The movement produced a trained voice: credentialed, camera-ready, authorised to speak for “Black women,” and fluent in a story whose moral center is female injury and male failure.

That class’s conduct—from the subtle to the open to the outright abrasive—has been animus-driven hypergamous and misandrist toward the Black working-class man. Grace would have treated him as the man who builds, operates, and maintains the infrastructure their livelihoods sit on. Instead he has been ranked: too ordinary, too threatening, too mediocre, too much in the way. The ranking was sold as standards, empowerment, or safety. It was not a cool market preference. It carried hostility. The abrasiveness is why the pattern is not a private taste. It is a public refusal of reciprocity.

The same conduct misrepresented Black men at large and tried to de-center them. A tail of desertion, violence, and irresponsibility became the portrait of the sex. Dissent was recoded as fragility, danger, or hate. The portrait was useful. It justified the class’s authority, its institutional berths, and its claim to represent women who never formally hired it.

It is also, in the class’s own dealings with Black men, a projection. The traits they freeze onto the male type—walking away from reciprocity, punishing rather than persuading, refusing responsibility for the children and households their choices help produce, ranking the other sex as disposable—are visible in their own pattern: status desertion of the working man, institutional aggression toward male critics, and a public ethic that treats female conduct as unjudgeable. They accuse him of being what they practice toward him.

The Quiet Mechanics of Envy

Envy does not announce itself. It does not storm the room demanding attention. It sits close, measures carefully, and smiles. It targets those near enough in age, status, background or potential that the mind can whisper the most corrosive sentence it knows: that could have been me. Distant giants are weather. Near equals are verdicts. Success in a peer is experienced less as their achievement and more as a private indictment. The greater the original similarity, the sharper the blade. Virtues wound more than flaws. Flaws reassure. Generosity that cannot be repaid converts gratitude into quiet hostility because it proves surplus on one side and need on the other. What cannot be admitted inside is projected outward onto a convenient hook. The hatred that follows is diagnostic: people resent most fiercely the exact quality they buried in themselves.

These patterns are not modern inventions. They appear across cultures and centuries. They explain why visible excellence draws punishment in peacetime and is rented back only in crisis. They explain why some fraction of people will pay real costs to reduce another’s position even when it leaves everyone poorer. They explain the difference between the ache that says “they have it, I want it, watch me move” and the ache that says “they have it and it must be destroyed.” The second form is resignation wearing the costume of justice.

Feminism as the Scaling of Malicious Envy

Feminism, as an ideology rather than a set of legal claims about equal rights, has institutionalised the second form and directed it at men as a class. It has taken private female envy of male agency, status, risk-taking and freedom of movement and scaled it into a collective narrative. The near equal is no longer the neighbour or the coworker. It is half the human race. The virtues that become intolerable are those historically associated with masculinity: initiative, provision, physical courage, emotional restraint under pressure, the willingness to build and defend. The projection is systematic. The buried female shadow — ambition that was shamed, aggression that was punished, sexual agency that was constrained, the desire to dominate rather than nurture — is externalised onto “patriarchy” and onto men. The ideology then provides the costume: concern, principle, historical justice. What cannot be confessed as envy is spoken as moral clarity.
