]]><![CDATA[Forest Service Investigators Enlist The Help Of The ATF After Improvised Explosive And Incendiary Devices Found In The Carson National Forest Of New Mexico.]]>https://thehotshotwakeup.substack.com/p/forest-service-investigators-enlisthttps://thehotshotwakeup.substack.com/p/forest-service-investigators-enlistSat, 22 Aug 2026 21:42:13 GMTThis week, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives put out a press release after multiple improvised explosive and incendiary devices were discovered in the Carson National Forest in New Mexico. Multiple suspected destructive devices were recovered near the Tres Piedras Ranger Station in Tres Piedras.

While we have seen other crazy stories like this in the past, think of the spike strips found in 2024 on the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon; however, this story from the Carson National Forest is very concerning.

The ATF is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone who has information about these explosive and incendiary devices left near the Tres Piedras Ranger Station.

Forest Service law enforcement responded to each incident, 3 that are publicly known, and asked the ATF to assist in the investigations. In April and May, multiple devices were found, and a citizen found the most recent device on August 10th.

ATF offers reward following the recovery of destructive devices in New Mexico

ATF seeks public help following incidents in northern New Mexico: August 20th, 2026

SANTA FE, N.M.— The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the placement and/or use of suspected destructive devices in the Carson National Forest in northern New Mexico. The items recovered in these incidents are more commonly referred to as improvised explosive or incendiary devices.

Between April 2, and May 8, 2026, multiple suspected destructive devices were recovered near the Tres Piedras Ranger Station in Tres Piedras, New Mexico. On August 10, 2026, an additional device was turned in to the Canjilon Ranger Station in Canjilon, New Mexico by a concerned citizen who reported to have found it.

The U.S. Forest Service and local law enforcement initially responded to each incident and requested further assistance from the ATF Phoenix Field Division. As a result, ATF Certified Explosives Specialists and Certified Fire Investigators collected evidence from the scenes which are now undergoing forensic examination at the ATF Forensic Science Laboratory. ATF is now the leading investigating law enforcement agency and continues to work alongside our local and federal law enforcement partners.

ATF reminds the public never to handle suspicious objects. Improvised explosive and incendiary devices can be extremely unstable and cause severe injury or property damage. Anyone who finds a suspicious item should immediately leave the area and call local law enforcement.

These individuals said they had been given a shelter in place order after armed individuals attempted to enter the fire camp.

I contacted the fire and the forest; they have released this statement:

The Santa Fe National Forest would like to express gratitude for the swift actions of incident management personnel and local authorities following an incident at the Frijoles Fire camp last night. Armed individuals attempted to enter the camp and threatened fire personnel before leaving the area. Law enforcement continues to search for the individuals involved.

No injuries were reported, and fire operations remain fully staffed and ongoing.

The Forest extends sincere appreciation to all firefighters working tirelessly on the Frijoles Fire and thanks partner agencies for their continued support.

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

I asked an individual who has knowledge of the situation and they said, “Two dudes rolled into camp talking shit, and there was a conflict, they were armed. Crazy people, man. Then we all got the order to shelter in place, and the LEOs started to respond from all over. They are still looking for them.”

I sat down with Montana Senator Tim Sheehy to discuss the current wildfire situation across the American West. Congress recently held a bipartisan meeting to talk about the fires burning in multiple regions, the devastation in Spokane, Washington, and the need for wildland firefighter support.

I ask if this season will be a reckoning for the wildfire system, Congress, and the public, with the amount of fire currently on the ground and the tragic loss so far this year. What happens in these congressional wildfire meetings? Why does it always seem like things are delayed, or remain unchanged?

What can be done to better support the boots on the ground, and will we have wildfire amnesia again once the season comes to a close? The Senator addresses all these questions, and more. As you know, Senator Sheehy didn’t hold back.

Today I welcome the Director of the United States Wildland Fire Service, Chief Brian Fennessy. As we all know, it’s been very busy up until this point, and there is lots to cover.

We discuss the unification of the Department of the Interior wildland firefighters and what that looks like moving forward. Who will do the landscape work? Do we have enough firefighters and resources?

We have a conversation about initial attack, full suppression, safety, and the current fire conditions on the ground. Chief Fennessy addresses the many misconceptions about how wildland firefighters operate, and how policy is based on current and expected conditions on the ground. Could the full suppression strategy change if conditions change? Of course.

We also dive into modernizing the workforce; this includes not only using new tech, but also updating the aging comms network and dispatch communication network.
