He is already walking, which tells you something about how long it has been since I last wrote here.

Almost two years.

A lot has happened since then. I made an entire wardrobe of newborn knits that never fit him, but more on that later. I finished my never-ending project, made two Sophie scarves, one in vicuña, a pair of socks, two summer tops, and a pijama set.

I also moved apartments and changed jobs.

Recounting it all, it feels like a lifetime. But it also feels as though I wrote my last post here only last week.

I won’t lie: the longer I went without writing, the heavier returning began to feel. It had been so long, I kept telling myself, that my return needed to be a grand post. One that somehow proved I hadn’t simply vanished.

During that time, my knitting projects took longer. My knitting time shrank. Travel stopped, and my spare time went to baby bottles and playpens instead.

Still, I never stopped knitting.

Even with less time, I knit whenever I can.

Time becomes sacred when you have none.

And it recently dawned on me that I’ve written about most of the things knitting requires: yarn, needles, accessories. But I had completely overlooked a crucial one.

Time.

Every knit needs three things: yarn, needles, and time. And time is the one nobody talks about.

People often ask whether I would sell my knits. Every time, I freeze, because I genuinely don’t know how to put a price on 35 to 50 hours of precious time.

Here’s the thing: what a hand knit is worth has very little to do with what it costs.

There is an immediacy to buying an off-the-shelf sweater that hand knits simply do not have. You see it, pay for it, and take it home. The transaction is complete.

A hand knit begins long before you wear it.

You spend hours choosing the pattern, the yarn, and the needles. You make sure the gauge is right. Then you spend many more hours actually knitting it.

Of course, the yarn itself can make a sweater feel more precious. But I would argue that it is the time we spend knitting that gives a hand knit its true worth.

Most of that worth is invisible.

Only another knitter can look at a sweater and really understand what went into it. To everyone else, it is just a sweater. But to us, it is legible. We can read the hours in it, like a language only knitters speak.

I remember the times and places where I knitted each of my pieces. Whenever I wear them, they take me back to those hours.

So, in a way, when I wear my hand knits, I wear my own history of time passing.

There is also a more practical side to this. Hand knits tend to stay with us longer than the things we buy in shops. They are often better made, and we naturally take better care of them.

Sauf those unfortunate knits that somehow end up in the washing machine.

I have only been knitting for six years, and I would say I’ve only been a very good knitter for three or four of them. Still, I am counting on my hand knits outliving most of my wardrobe.

I want them to grow old with me and remind me of the countless hours I spent making them.

This is not the grand return post I imagined. I do not have dozens of beautiful photographs of everything I have made, or of the countless places I have been since I last wrote here.

They will come, though.

For now, this is simply to say that it is time for me to return to The Knitting Explorer.

And I am very happy to be back.

The Quest for the Perfect Fisherman Sweater

It all started with my boyfriend’s search for the perfect navy fisherman sweater. Naturally, I fell down a knitting rabbit hole.

After watching a video about Guernsey sweaters, I got curious about the history of the iconic Gansey fisherman's sweater. Ganseys, or guernseys, were traditional jumpers knitted from 5-ply, un-oiled, worsted-spun sheep’s wool. They were usually made with indigo blue yarn but cream, red, or white were used as well. One of their main visual characteristics were their prominent purl stitches. 

Moreover, did you know each family had its own pattern on the upper chest and arms? While these patterns showed off the knitter’s skills, they also served a grimmer purpose—helping families identify their loved ones if tragedy struck at sea.

These patterns were passed down from mother to daughter, creating an identity, each telling its own story. The blend of practicality and heritage got me thinking: what would a "modern heirloom" look like? Could I create a sweater that feels as timeless and meaningful as the original Ganseys?

Yarn Shop Adventures: Barcelona and London

During my recent travels, I made time to explore yarn shops, and it was so rewarding.

Note to self: When you travel a lot for work, it’s important to carve out time for yourself. Life isn’t all about work—finding that balance is tough, but it’s worth the effort.

First, there’s Loop London. It’s a classic favorite (how could it not be?), but this trip also led me to two new gems: Knit with Attitude in London and Lalanalu in Barcelona.

At Lalanalu, I discovered new Spanish yarns by WoolDreamers—affordable, entirely sourced in Spain, and beautifully textured. Then there was Soc una Troca!!!, a local indie-dyed sock yarn brand. I loved all these Spanish yarns, but couldn’t leave without a few skeins of MyYak, one of my favorite yarns of all time!

At Knit with Attitude, I found the perfect yarn for my long-planned Gujo sweater. Oversized, cozy, and with a collar you can hide in, it’s a pattern that’s been calling my name. Half fisherman’s rib keeps it interesting but not overwhelming.

For the first time, I also got to touch the famous Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk yarns. The hype? Absolutely deserved. These yarns are the opposite of superwash—they’re rustic, textured, and promise to get better with time. I paired their Tinde yarn with Pickles Soft Fuzz for a dreamy blend. Was it expensive? Sure. But worth every penny.

Then came Loop, and my plans completely unraveled (pun intended). Seeing Gujo’s original yarn (Woolia by Gepard Garn) in person, I realized my dense combo wouldn’t work. The solution? Buy more yarn, of course. I left London with 25+ balls and zero regrets.

Sometimes, it’s the little tools that make the biggest difference.

As knitters, we pour hours into creating (and sometimes investing in) our woolly treasures—so why not treat them to some TLC? I tried the much-lauded Gleener after hearing endless recommendations, but it didn’t wow me. Then Amazon suggested an electric lint remover. I was skeptical—aren’t we all with those “life-changing” gadgets? But I gave in.

Plot twist: day one, I cleaned every sweater I own. Even my socks got the treatment.

What am I going to pack for my summer? The eternal question we all have faced at some point. This time, though, it was a bit more challenging.

I wasn’t just packing for a few days away, but for everything—work events that needed formal outfits, a wedding in Spain, beach days in South Korea, and oh yeah, hiking Machu Picchu (a Vicuña yarn adventure, anyone?). That was my summer. Forty days, three continents, ten cities.

And amidst the whirlwind of family visits and adventures, there was one thing I knew for sure: I needed enough yarn to clothe a small army of sheep.

Don't get me wrong—I love my family. But you know how it is. To stay sane, you need your outlets, your moments of quiet amidst the chaos. For me, that’s knitting.

So, with only fragmented moments between social gatherings and travel, one thing came to my mind: Mindless Knitting. Let me explain.

Understanding Mindless Knitting

For those of you wondering, "What in the world is mindless knitting?"

It’s the kind of knitting so simple, you could practically do it with your eyes closed. It doesn’t require constant counting, switching patterns, or a mental workout. Just you, your needles, and the soothing rhythm of stitch after stitch.

It’s perfect for travel or those chaotic moments when you need to unwind without thinking too hard. And believe me, during the hustle and bustle of this summer, mindless knitting became my saver.

The Cast of Characters (AKA My Summer Projects)

With so much on the agenda, I carefully selected projects that were simple yet enjoyable—ones I could pick up and put down whenever I had a moment. Here’s what made it into my travel bag:

1. The Eternal Dress (Difficulty Level: 5/10)

Ah, the Eternal Dress—the crown jewel of my mindless knitting ambitions. This wasn't just any project; it was my "knitting opus," if you will: A top-to-bottom long dress using 3.5mm needles.. Ambitious? Perhaps. Slightly mad? Definitely.

Based on the Collett Tee by Witre Design, this behemoth was already on my needles before summer even whispered its arrival. My estimate? A cool 200 hours of plain knitting. That's right—200 hours of knit, knit, and more knit. It was to be my knitting Everest: majestic in scope, demanding in patience, and hopefully not requiring oxygen tanks to complete.

I had visions of returning from my summer odyssey, triumphantly wearing a dress that screamed, "Yes, I knitted this while exploring three continents!" Expectations vs reality. By the time autumn leaves started to fall, I had barely made it to the base camp of this textile mountain.

But fear not, dear readers! This dress and I are in it for the long haul. After all, Rome wasn't knit in a day, and neither, apparently, are dresses of epic proportions. Stay tuned for updates... possibly in the year 2525. 

2. The Classic Baby Blanket (Difficulty Level: 2/10)

Let's face it: I'm about as monogamous in my knitting as a bee in a field of flowers. One project? For an entire trip? Perish the thought! So, naturally, I needed a second project to keep my needles company.

But here's the thing about mindless knitting—sometimes your hands get a bit too enthusiastic. Before I knew it, just two weeks into my adventure, I knitted the last stitch.

And so, with a finished project and many miles still ahead, I found myself in need of project number three. Because let's be honest, a knitter without a project is like a traveler without a passport—lost, confused, and eyeing every bit of string as potential yarn. The adventure continues!

3. The Tank Top of Unexpected Complexity (Difficulty Level: 6/10)

After a “cool” 36 hours of traveling to Peru, I began Jessie Mae's Mini Mock Neck Tank using a bamboo yarn that I found at the local yarn store. Don't let its unassuming name fool you though—this project packs alot. It demands a solid grasp of increases and a friendly relationship with German short rows. But after weeks of mindless knitting, I was ready for the challenge.

The tank top became my perfect travel companion, especially during the ten-hour train ride from Cusco to Titicaca. As the Peruvian landscape rolled by (yes, llamas included), my needles clicked away, shaping the bamboo yarn into something beautiful. Now, whenever I wear this top, I'm transported back to those Andean mountains and plateaus.

But here's the thing about knitting—it's a journey, not just a destination. While I love the zen of mindless knits (there's something so satisfying about watching a sweater body grow), after weeks of stockinette stitch, my brain was crying out for more. I needed a new challenge, something to shake up the monotony. And so, in a twist that surprised even me, I found myself reaching for…

Like life, knitting thrives on a blend of simplicity and complexity. Sometimes, we need the calm, repetitive motion of mindless stitches. Other times, we crave the mental engagement of a more intricate project.

The key is to listen to what you need in the moment and embrace both sides.

As a devoted knitter and unabashed animal lover, I've long been enamored with alpacas and their luxurious yarn. Let's face it: alpacas are adorable, and their fiber is irresistibly soft and drapey. But have you ever felt vicuña yarn? It's the crown jewel of camelid fibers – the softest of them all. 

After years of daydreaming about "Made in Peru" yarn labels, I decided it was time to meet these woolly wonders in person. This summer, I finally embarked on a textile enthusiast's dream journey through Peru, visiting Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Titicaca.

My mission? To unravel Peru's yarn legacy. This Andean region is renowned for producing some of the world's finest knitting yarns, and I had questions:

• Do these women actually sell handmade clothes and yarns from their own flocks?

• Would I stumble upon farmers offering hanks of vicuña yarn straight from their personal herds?

• Was I about to discover the handcrafted knitting yarn of my dreams?

Spoiler alert: The answer was yes – but not without a few tangled threads along the way, so read until the end.

Lima: First Encounters with Peruvian Fiber Arts

My Peruvian yarn odyssey began in Lima. Between sips of pisco sour and bites of ceviche, I made a pilgrimage to the Amano Museum of Pre-Columbian Textiles. This hidden gem, founded by the passionate collector Yoshitaro Amano, offers a mind-blowing look at Peru's rich textile history. 

When most people think of Peruvian textiles, they probably picture colorful alpaca sweaters or maybe Incan tapestries. But the Amano Museum blew my mind with its incredible collection that spans thousands of years. Turns out, Peru's textile tradition goes way deeper than I ever imagined. As I wandered through exhibits showcasing pieces from ancient cultures I'd never even heard of – Chavin, Paracas, Nasca, Mochica, and Huari – I felt like a textile time traveler. These civilizations thrived long before the Incas, some dating back to 500 BCE.

But here's what really got my knitter's heart racing: amidst all the beautiful woven fabrics, I stumbled upon examples of ancient needle knitting. Can you believe it? People were knitting in Peru over 2,000 years ago! The Paracas and Nasca cultures, in particular, created intricate embroideries that left me in awe. These weren't just simple designs – we're talking detailed depictions of animals, scenes from everyday life, and some seriously wild supernatural figures that looked like they jumped straight out of a fantasy novel. Standing there, surrounded by these ancient textile treasures, I couldn't help but feel a connection to these long-gone artisans and wonder what they'd think of our modern knitting techniques.

Pro Tip: If you can't make it to Peru, check out the famous “Paracas Textile” at the Brooklyn Museum. Its border is like a prehistoric comic strip of life on Peru's South Coast – 96 tiny figures telling countless stories.

My quest for exceptional yarn bore fruit on day one at the Amano Museum Shop. I know, I know – museum shops can be hit or miss, often with sky-high prices. But I couldn't resist snagging some skeins from Frigg_Textile: some baby alpaca dyed with Colle (a vibrant yellow) and some high Andean sheep yarn hand-dyed with cochineal. 

With these treasures tucked away, I resisted the siren call of Lima's regular yarn shops. My mission was clear: find the most authentic, artisanal yarns Peru had to offer. The rest of my time in Lima? A delicious blur of ceviche and local markets exploration before heading to Cusco.

Cusco: Where Tourist Traps and Textile Traditions Collide

Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, is arguably Peru's most popular city. It's also ground zero for the alpaca product explosion. Every corner boasts shops selling "alpaca" everything: sweaters, shawls, cardigans, hats, socks – you name it, they've alpaca-fied it. 

But here's the uncomfortable truth: most of these items are cheap, mass-produced imitations. They're about as handmade as a factory-fresh smartphone.

As I explored Cusco's markets, a disheartening trend emerged. Tourism has pushed many artisans towards selling identical, mass-produced goods found in every corner of Peru. It's like walking down a supermarket aisle – the same products, different packaging. 

Here's a yarn explorer's pro tip: develop your sense of touch! When you visit a yarn store, even if some skeins are out of your price range, feel them. Train your fingers to discern the good from the bad. This isn't a museum – touching is encouraged (and essential)!

It's hard to blame the vendors, though. Fast fashion has conditioned consumers to expect dirt-cheap clothing. Few people today are willing (or able) to pay the true cost of a handmade woolen item. 

Despite Cusco's abundance of "alpaca" stores, I couldn't find a single shop catering to knitters. Most souvenir stores sell Indiecita DK – an alpaca yarn produced by the large company Michell. But I was after something truly artisanal and special.

Chinchero Charm: Where Weavers Spin Magic

Just when I was about to unravel in despair, a chance encounter in Chinchero would change everything. As the sun dipped low and most sellers packed up for the day, my eagle-eyed boyfriend spotted a woman weaving at a small souvenir shop. 

We struck up a conversation, and I discovered that behind the typical tourist trinkets, she had a traditional studio where she and her family dyed, spun, and wove fibers into stunning ponchos and blankets.

Norberta, our newfound fiber artist friend, generously demonstrated her entire process. I watched in awe as she transformed cochineal bugs into vibrant dye, coaxing rich colors from nature's palette. Her studio housed dozens of handspun yarns that left me speechless. 

However, as their specialty was woven fabrics, the twist was too tight for knitting. Nonetheless, I was so enchanted by Norberta's store, process, and products that I purchased a poncho, and she kindly gifted me a small ball of undyed alpaca yarn – the only one soft enough for knitting. That little gesture rekindled my hope after all the time wandering through Cusco's tourist traps.

Chasing Clouds: The Great Vicuña Yarn Hunt

But my Peruvian yarn adventure wasn't over yet. I had one more fiber-filled mission, a quest I'd been saving for just the right moment. Like a teenager who'd squirreled away their allowance for months, I was on the hunt for the holy grail of yarn: vicuña. Even a tiny bit would do. (Side note: I always encourage responsible spending! Don't go into debt for yarn, no matter how luscious it is!)

Finding vicuña yarn proved to be my greatest challenge. While vicuña items are available in several stores, they come with eye-watering price tags. We're talking 2,000 USD for a small scarf, 8,000 USD for a sweater, and I even spotted a coat for a cool 50k! Moreover, these are all sold as finished garments – no loose yarn in sight.

Just when I thought my vicuña dreams might remain unfulfilled, fate smiled upon me. A local driver tipped me off about a place called: Manos de la Comunidad. A unique establishment that's part alpaca store, part farm, and part animal shelter. Here, visitors can see various alpacas, llamas, guanacos, and yes, even my beloved vicuñas! It's a fiber enthusiast's petting zoo dream come true.

Understanding my passion for yarn (and my budget constraints), the kind tour guide at Manos de la Comunidad agreed to sell me the small balls of vicuña yarn they had for display. This was a far cry from the 1kg minimum at 5,000 USD that the store manager had initially offered. For an animal lover and yarn enthusiast like myself, this experience was the crowning moment of my trip.

Unraveling Traditions: The Price of Fast Fashion in Peru

As I prepared to leave Peru, my treasured vicuña yarn nestled in my purse next to my passport, I found myself reflecting on the broader implications of my quest. My visit to Norberta's store had opened my eyes to the far-reaching effects of fast fashion, even in communities hundreds of kilometers from the nearest chain store.

Global brands like Zara, H&M, Forever 21, and Shein have accustomed us to sweaters costing merely 20-30 USD. Artisans like Norberta could never produce handmade items at such prices. 

While it's true that garments made with traditional techniques and high-quality materials are expensive and not accessible to everyone, it's also true that our consumption habits have shifted. 

We now prefer to own 15 cheap sweaters rather than two high-quality pieces. (I'm guilty of this too, but I'm working on it! Aren't we all?)

From Peru with Love: A Yarn-Spun Call to Action

My journey through Peru fulfilled my dream of finding amazing yarns, but it also left me with a bittersweet realization. Artisans catering to tourism have had to adapt, focusing their energy on selling mass-produced items of lower quality, gradually abandoning their ancient traditional crafts.

They need to pay rent, just like we do! I just wish there was a better balance – I don't know how to achieve it yet, but I hope we get there someday.

As I packed my prized yarns – tangible threads connecting me to Peru's rich textile heritage – I couldn't help but ponder the future of these traditional crafts in our fast-paced, mass-produced world. 

My hope is that by sharing this experience, we can start a conversation about the value of artisanal work and the importance of preserving these ancient skills for future generations of fiber artists and enthusiasts.

So, fellow yarn lovers, the next time you pick up your needles or hooks, take a moment to consider the journey your yarn has taken.

For example, I have one sock project that has been missing the second sock since 2020. I haven’t touched it since I finished the first sock and I always forget about its existence. I also have this blanket that I have been knitting on and off since 2020. I do not particularly love the process of knitting these squares, so I only knit when I am in the mindset of finishing something eventually.

The Flower Cardigan (Difficulty level: 10/10)

The third category for my old WIPs is the never-ending project. My never-ending project is the Flower Cardigan by Sandness Garn.  

I began knitting this cardigan in February 2021. I aimed to expand my knitting skills after watching numerous YouTube videos (remember those pandemic days and YouTube?) about steeking. The project was also a great candidate for stash busting. I used some red Phildar Cashmere and beige Mondim to begin my sweater. As you can see in this free pattern, you begin the sweater by knitting in the round from bottom to top. Once you reach the armhole level, you split to knit the front and back separately. It took me more than a year to reach this moment.

In August 2022, when counting the stitches to separate the front and the back, I realized I had miscounted them at cast on. The sweater was smaller than the smallest size available in the pattern and there was no way it was ever going to fit me. At that point, I was a little scared that I was not going to have enough of the cashmere so I decided it was time to frog the body I had just knitted and the sleeve as I needed to change the yarn.

For those unfamiliar with the term, frogging in knitting (and crochet) means ripping out your work. In 15 minutes, I unraveled a year’s worth of knitting. I was Face-timing with my boyfriend and he was mortified to see my work unravel that way. I knit for the process, I told him, not for the result. Plus, my closet is small, if something will live there, it has to fit me well!

I have a rule that, if I make a knitting mistake, I have to fix it before I put the work down. Otherwise, it is very discouraging to go back to it. So right away, I picked a yellow yarn (another hand-me-down from the office) and began knitting the sweater again. No time to think, no time to hesitate. That happened almost two years ago. I wish I could say that was the last time I frogged anything on this project.

In November 2023, I frogged another full sleeve. A few months ago, the top of the back of the sweater. I am happy to announce though that I am now close to finally finishing this project, three and a half years later.

That, dear Explorers, is what I call perseverance. Very soon, I will embark on the reason why I started this sweater in the first place: steeking. If you do not know what steeking is, it is the nightmare of all knitters turned into a clever technique. You knit a whole sweater in the round and then cut it in the middle to create a cardigan. Pretty scary, especially when you have spent the last three years of your life knitting this sweater. So far, this is where I am at. I will keep you posted on how it goes!

This project is a 10/10 on my difficulty scale. It has really complex knitting techniques, and the pattern is written for advanced knitters as it does not give you detailed step-by-step directions.

Falling in Love with the Process

Knitting has taught me more about perseverance and patience than I ever imagined. Each project, whether it’s a quick hat or a years-long cardigan, brings its own challenges and rewards. The process itself is a journey. Sometimes it’s smooth and swift, and other times it’s filled with setbacks and do-overs. But it’s in those moments of unraveling and re-knitting that I find the most joy. Each stitch, each row, brings me closer not just to a finished piece, but to a deeper appreciation of the craft itself.

As I work through my projects, old and new, I am reminded that the joy of knitting is not just in the finished product, but in the meditative, rhythmic process of creation. It’s about learning from mistakes, celebrating small victories, and most importantly, enjoying the journey.

Procrastination can often be seen as the enemy of progress, but in knitting, we learn that sometimes setting a project aside and returning to it later with fresh eyes and renewed energy can be part of the process. Each WIP holds the promise of growth, both in our skills and in our patience.

So, whether you’re finishing up an old project or starting a new one, remember to embrace the process and find joy in every stitch.

I was on a family road trip near Seville, Spain, with my Dad and siblings, when out of nowhere, I got this wild idea to knit socks. Yep, socks. I had knitted a scarf before, I had seen my grandma knit way more complicated things without even looking, and socks were just two tubes with a little curve, right? Oh, if only I knew...

 The Great Yarn Fiasco

I'm in this tiny craft store in a small Spanish town, and I spot some lime green acrylic yarn. "Perfect!" I thought. "Cheap and cheerful." Oh, how naive I was! Trying to knit socks with that stuff was like trying to paint a watercolor with oils – it just wasn't going to work.

You see, I learned the hard way that buying yarn is a lot like buying art supplies. Just as you wouldn't use finger paints for a fine art portrait, you can't use just any old yarn for every project. There's a whole world of fibers out there, each with its own personality and purpose.

Think about it: watercolors give you those dreamy, translucent washes, while oils offer rich, textured strokes. In the yarn world, fluffy mohair creates ethereal, cloud-like fabrics, while sturdy wool makes warm, durable sweaters. It's all about matching your material to your vision.

So there I was, on a yarn odyssey through three different stores. I encountered a single-ply yarn that unraveled faster than my patience, and let me tell you, that stuff wouldn't hold a stitch to save its life! But finally, eureka! I found my perfect match – a rustic sock yarn, 75% wool for warmth and 25% nylon for strength.

And you know what? That whole adventure taught me a crucial first lesson: knowing your yarn is as essential to knitting as knowing your paints is to painting. It's not just about color (though that lime green was pretty snazzy) – it's about texture, durability, stretch, and so much more.

So, fellow knitters, next time you're starting a new project, remember: choosing the right yarn isn't just about picking a pretty color. It's about finding the perfect fiber to bring your woolly vision to life!

Now, about that first sock... Let's just say it was a bit... special. I got the technique right, sure, but the proportions? Let's call them 'artistic'. It was tiny, completely out of whack, but you know what? It was mine. Just like that first love, you'll always have a memory of it, even if it didn't end well. Of that sock I only have a picture, and a cherished memory of where it all began. 

Wool: The True Champion of Fibers

Did you know humans have been cozying up to wool since 10,000 BCE? That's right, we've been wool fans longer than we've been writing or doing math. Talk about standing the test of time!

And get this - wool doesn't give bacteria a chance to party. It's like having a bouncer for your sweater, keeping it naturally fresh. No wonder our ancestors were so into it!

In addition:

- It's warm (obvious, but worth mentioning)

- It breathes (unlike that sweaty acrylic stuff)

- It doesn't get smelly (always a plus)

- It's self-cleaning (Thanks to its natural oils, it repels dirt and moisture, so just airing it out helps it shake off odors and stains with ease.)

- It's fire-resistant (for those of us who like to live dangerously close to candles)

- It's elastic (very forgiving for the little knitting mistakes!)

Now, I'm not dismissing other fibers. Silk, linen, cotton, viscose – they're all lovely. Especially for those summer knits or when blended with wool. But wool? Wool's like wine, it gets better and better with time. 

The Great Wool Buffet

If you're lucky enough to have good yarn stores nearby or reliable mail (bless those delivery folks), you've got options, my friend. We're talking:

- Shetland wool (for when you want to feel like a Scottish highlands sheep)

- Cashmere (when you're feeling fancy)

- Mohair (for that "I'm wearing a cloud" look)

- Angora (bunny softness, anyone?)

- Alpaca (because who doesn't want to wear a hug from an alpaca?)

- Qiviut (from the undercoat of the muskox - yeah, it's a thing)

- Yak (the Tibetan cashmere)  

- Vicuña (the finest and most expensive of them all)

Confessions of a Stash Addict: My Yarn-Hoarding Adventures

I'll let you in on a secret: I've got a bit of a yarn problem. Working in fashion hasn't helped – I'm always bringing home "samples" (aka, leftover yarn cones that are passed onto me). My partner jokes that if we got locked in our apartment, we'd emerge three years later buried in knitwear.

Every time I travel, I make it my mission to visit local yarn stores. It's like a treasure hunt, but instead of gold, I'm after skeins of woolly goodness. (Note to self: Write a post about the best yarn stores around the world. Coming soon, I promise!)

Now, let's talk about stash size for a moment. You know how they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Well, stash size is in the eye of the knitter! What seems like a mountain of yarn to one person might be a molehill to another. For me, a closet full of yarn feels like a lot, but hey, you do you! There's no right or wrong here – your perfect stash size is whatever makes you happy.

In terms of yarn, I will knit with anything as long as they are natural fibers. I have some favorites though:

1. Parade by Amirisu: It's this fancy mix of 60% wool, 20% cotton, 10% silk, and 10% linen. Sounds like a salad, knits like a dream.

Absolutely perfect to wear next to skin, I made a long-sleeve version of the Collett Tee and have worn it non stop.

2. Mondim by Rosa Pomar: 100% fine Portuguese wool. It's like Portugal sent us a warm, wooly hug.

Talking about aging well, this is probably my #1 yarn for aging. Do not be fooled by the rustic feel when you purchase the yarn, it really only gets better with time.

3. Baby Alpaca Chunky by Cascade Yarns: Wearing this is the closest you can ever be to living in a cloud.

Although it sheds quite a lot at the beginning, it ages as well as a rustic wool and never loses its softness. I made the Clubhouse Ranglan Hoodie and it is without a doubt my most worn knit of all times!

The Moral of the Story

Look, at the end of the day, knitting's supposed to be fun. So pick a yarn that makes you happy. Life's too short for splitty acrylic (unless that's your jam, then you do you).

And remember, every tangled yarn ball and dropped stitch is just part of the adventure. We're all just figuring it out as we go along.

Here's my two cents: If you're gonna spend 60+ hours knitting something, why not make it last a lifetime? Natural fibers might cost a bit more, but they're like fine wine - they only get better with age.

Before I dive into my recent projects, I want to introduce a difficulty level scale. For those just starting their knitting journey, I don't want you to jump into a very challenging project and lose motivation. So, I'll rate each project on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being suitable for beginners and 10 being the most challenging.

Let me share two projects I'm currently wrapping up:

The Bison (Difficulty level: 8/10)

Continuing with this week's theme—needles—let's talk about the Bison. I'm in the final stages of knitting Forrest the Bison by Cinthia Vallet. If you haven't seen her work, you're missing out; she creates the most adorable and detailed animal patterns. These stuffed animals are true knitted art, often using 2mm needles with fingering weight yarn, each with its own charming outfit.

Working with such tiny circumferences was a new challenge for me, and I spent a lot of time finding the most comfortable needles. Typically, I knit socks on 9" circular needles, but this pattern required much smaller circumferences. I used a mix of 2mm DPNs, a 2mm x 60cm circular needle for magic loop, and the  Addi CraSy Trio. The Addis have been my favorite—they offer the flexibility of a circular needle cable without the hassle of constantly pulling stitches.

The Carpe Diem Sweater (Difficulty level: 5/10)

I'm also nearing the end of Lærke Bagger's "The Carpe Diem Sweater" - the beaded one. Knitted in navy virgin lambswool, I've used metal circular needles throughout. The smoothness of metal needles helps slip the beads easily. I started this sweater in December 2023, and it has been one of my most delightful projects.

Stringing the beads before knitting adds excitement as patterns and colors emerge. This project has been quite the traveler, accompanying me to Colombia and London. It's attracted comments from passengers and staff who noticed my progress. Seeing familiar faces on my trips, I've shared moments of joy over the evolving sweater.

A Peek into My Knitting World

Like many knitting addicts, I have two baskets full of projects, ranging from blankets I started years ago to half-finished socks. These two nearly finished projects are just a glimpse of my knitting adventures. But hey! I need to save some stories for next week!

And then I discovered knitting. A revelation! With just 5 basic tools: a set of knitting needles, a pair of scissors, a tapestry needle, and a few stitch markers… That's all you need to create an entire sweater. It's so beautifully compact; your whole knitting world can fit right in your pocket. Is there any other craft so marvelously minimalist? I think not!

Perfecting the Notions Pouch

My notions pouches are a testament to this. Perfected over years, I now have two streamlined sets: one for travel, one for home. But let me tell you, it wasn't always this way. As soon as you start getting comfortable with knitting, you start ordering all the crap you think you might need... and that's the mistake! (Hello, AliExpress! I'm talking to you.) Then you start curating, figuring out what quality tools work best for you, what feels most comfortable in your hands.

The travel pouch is a tiny treasure trove, packed with TSA-approved scissors, markers, darning needles, and measuring tape. Plus all my personal essentials like lip balm and lotion. And it still fits in any pocket!

The home pouch? It's like the travel one but on steroids! Fully packed with crochet hooks, markers, rulers, stitch holders and more. But even at its fullest, it's still delightfully petite.

Needles now and then 

In terms of knitting tools, I don’t consider myself an extremist. I don’t have all the latest knitting trinkets, but also I don’t like to have the bare minimum. I like to live comfortably in the middle and I find the simplicity of knitting enchanting. If you think about it, since the beginning of knitting, the tools needed to make garments haven't changed that much. Yes, yes, I am sure the ladies in the medieval times did now have Chiaogoo interchangeable knitting sets, but let me explain. 

Studies suggest that as early as 76,000 years ago, Homo sapiens were making bone awls, early precursors of the sewing needle. As humans evolved, so did their needles and the sophisticated items they crafted with them. While the exact origins of knitting remain unclear, evidence suggests it began in Egypt and spread through Europe before reaching the rest of the globe (Piecework Magazine, Winter 2023).

Although ancient Egyptians didn't have 9" circulars for their socks, they used a technique called nålbinding, which produces a remarkably similar result. Nålbinding is an end-led textile technique using a single-eyed needle to create fabric by sewing non-continuous lengths of thread into a series of crossed loops - a sort of in between sewing, crocheting, and knitting.

By the 16th century, knitting was a widespread method for creating garments and accessories. Richard Rutt's book, A History of Hand Knitting, notes that historically, knitting needles were mostly made of metal. But by the 19th century, knitters were using all sorts of materials like bone, steel, vulcanite, galalith, and tortoiseshell. Throughout history, metal, wood, and bone have been the go-to materials for knitting needles. And now, 600 years later, I'm still using the same types of needles (minus the bone, ew!). Even the styles haven't changed much - 16th-century paintings show knitters using both Double Pointed Needles (DPNs) and circulars, just like we do today.

My Love Affair with Circular Needles

I've got a few DPNs that have been passed down to me, but I'm 100% a ChiaoGoo circular needle knitter. And let me tell you, my circular needle collection is no joke! I've got fixed circulars, interchangeables, every length and size you can imagine, in both metal and bamboo. I carefully choose which type to use for each project based on the yarn material, weight, and even my mood. Sometimes I'm a bamboo needle girl, loving the soft, warm feel in my hands; other times, I crave the speed of metal needles. I adore the variety and the freedom to choose based on my whims. If you are a knitter, you must know, ChiaoGoo needles are not cheap! But, to me, totally worth the investment. I have amassed my collection little by little throughout the years and it gives me pleasure to know that they will last me forever (unless it’s a 2mm bamboo 9” needle, which always break when I am halfway through a sock).

So whether you're already a knitter or just starting out, remember: all you need is a few sticks and some string. Dive in, experiment, and enjoy the simple magic of knitting!

Seven years ago, I was immersed in history books, living in New York City and working on a master’s degree. I wrote about fascinating topics like women wearing crinolines and the origins of lace. My world was one of dusty libraries and scholarly pursuits. After graduation, my life took an unexpected turn—I moved to Paris and stepped into the vibrant world of luxury fashion. While I left behind my academic studies for work reasons, I discovered a new passion: knitting.

Still not sure how it arrived… I think I needed a hands-on hobby amidst a hectic life. Maybe I missed doing crafts, longed for the sense of accomplishment from my academic days, or perhaps it was just part of my own personal journey? 

The fact is that knitting truly saved me. I started knitting a few months before COVID-19, living in a tiny studio in Paris, seeking a hands-on hobby that didn’t take up much space. Paris apartments are notoriously small—about the size of an average American closet… Just kidding, but they are very small. When the world shut down, I spent up to 12 hours a day knitting at my dining table and this became my lifeline during a challenging time in my marriage, providing solace and a sense of purpose. 

Since then, I have amassed a treasure trove of yarn, mastered knitting both right and left-handed, and created over 40 hand-knit garments, each a testament to resilience and creativity. I knit all the time—on my business travels, in meetings, you name it. Business class is my favorite knitting chair. I live most of the time in Paris, but my travels often take me to New York, London, Madrid, different parts of Asia, and Milan.

The luxury fashion industry is a kaleidoscope of creativity, yet I often found myself longing for the quiet contemplation and meticulous research of my academic days.
