“Follow your dreams.”

And while this half-assed advice is usually meant as an encouraging sentiment from mentor to mentee, it’s also what’s been keeping you stuck for the last several years.

Let me explain.

Growing up, everyone is always prepping you for the next best thing. Middle school prepares you for high school, high school prepares you for college, and college prepares you for the real world. The last time it was acceptable for most of us to pause, breathe, and actually take life in was elementary school - when the biggest issue was deciding who to sit with at recess.

At the ripe age of 18, you arrive at university. For some, it’s the school they’ve been dreaming of, built mostly on a fantasy based off of great marketing and TV. For others, it’s just what their parents could afford. And then there are the smart few we always forget to mention — the ones we’ve dismissed as “stupid” when they might be the smartest of all of us —who skip this chapter altogether.

Let me be clear, I went to college. It was some of the best years of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. But the system that gets you there is quietly damaging.

In school, they teach you science, English, social studies, and math, all of it worthwhile, and little of it bearing much on your actual interests in the real world.

Then you land in college at 18 - living alone for the first time, sneaking into bars with your fake ID since they’d rather risk your life in war than allow you to sip alcohol. All of a sudden, it’s four years later.

You’ve graduated with a degree; maybe you got lucky and picked up an internship for some real-world experience, and now you’re told to go find a job that aligns with your interests.

A job where McDonald’s workers with no degree will out-earn you and you’ll rack up more debt simply by existing.

But you’re supposed to be grateful, because while you may be overworked and underpaid now, this job will eventually lead to a better one, which leads to an even better one, and by the time you’re 37 you’ll finally be making a good salary. Debt paid off by 50, retire at 65, and then you can travel like you always wanted. And that’s if you’re lucky.

All because you “followed your passion,” the passion you had at 18, when your parents and teachers were pressuring you to make a life-altering decision before they even considered you a real adult.

Eventually, you leave that shitty job with the boss who kind of hates you but relies on you to function, and the silence loudens:

“What even is your passion?”

You thought you had just followed it, right?

You thought that entry-level job was going to lead you down a path of fulfillment and excitement, that something inside you would just, well, click?

Now that it hasn’t, something must be wrong with you…

You loved to write, so why don’t you love writing for the magazine that’s half taken over by bots and pays you $25 an hour, barely enough to finance your shoebox of a New York City apartment, so you stick to ramen and cheap wine to get by. But hey, at least you have health insurance.

Or, you genuinely love helping people, so you decide to become a doctor, only to graduate college $100K in debt, go on to another four years and $300,000, and then spend the next eight years rotating in and out of hospital doors. But it’ll all be “worth it” in the end.

To make matters worse, you doomscroll on social media, and everyone, and I do mean everyone, seems to be a self-proclaimed millionaire. Just by posting content?

Naturally, the only logical response is a quarter-life crisis.

You just spent the last 25 years chasing this so-called passion, only to realize it was a lie all along.

But the worst part is, you don’t forget the idea of passion. You retreat to your roots and try to make sense of it. So the next few years, instead of focusing on how to make money, you’re focused on figuring out WTF your passion even is. Now you’re confused and broke, working part-time at a bakery while living in DC, still trying to figure out how to chase your dreams.

Release it, and your potential will be reborn.

Stop chasing this fictional thing you’ve been told to chase your whole life, like it’s some secret lock and key to happiness and success.

There are two ways this can go:

The first -

My sister graduated college, a bright young woman and objectively smarter than me. She has no idea what to do with her life. She just knows she loves to travel and wants a job that basically feels like a vacation. So she moved to a perfect little beach town and found a part time job at a surf shop. She quit that job about a month in and is now contemplating moving back home. She still doesn’t know what her passion is or how to get there, and she’s back home, confused, and feeling unaccomplished.

The second -

Me.

I went to college, just like my sister. Graduated with a degree in journalism. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, except that I wanted to travel. I applied on a whim to an airline as a flight attendant, and I’ve been there ever since. My passion was never customer service, or even being a stewardess. I never once looked into the job before applying for it. But my passion was travel and writing, and this was a practical way to feed those interests while still getting a paycheck.

Same “passion,” more or less, as my sister’s. The difference is I never waited for a job title to match it exactly. I found something practical that got me close enough and let the rest follow.

You see, I’m not telling you to abandon your interests or ignore your calling. If your calling is real, it’ll show up in what you’re drawn to, not in one perfect job you have to nail down.

What I am telling you is that this idea of “passion,” of “knowing what you want to do,” of “having it all figured out,” is a straight-up lie, and it’s feeding into your psychosis. It’s what’s keeping you stuck, paralyzed, feeling like you know you’re capable of more but don’t know how to get there or what it is.

No one knows what they want to do. Even Emma Grede (co-founder of Skims) has said as much herself: she called herself a quitter, because she jumped from thing to thing before she figured out what actually worked.

So stop chasing the notion that’s keeping you stuck. Take the practical job. Take the side jobs. Make the money, because despite what they want you to think, money is power and money is freedom, at least most of the time.

You don’t have to have it all figured out, but you do have to do something. Along the way, it’ll all work out.

Two independent magazines under one small masthead are hiring a shared Editorial Assistant — Yolo Journal, Yolanda Edwards’ visually driven travel print/digital title, and WM Brown, Matt Hranek’s men’s lifestyle magazine covering style, cars, travel, food, drink, and cigars. It’s a genuinely rare NYC media seat to see posted in the open.

The role is a mix of platform management (WordPress and Substack across both titles’ sites, newsletters, and Substacks — Club Yolo included), editorial work like contributor outreach and copywriting, and the administrative glue that keeps a small, scrappy team running. They’re explicit that it’s small enough for everyone’s creative contributions to count, not just execution.

Travel Opportunity (Not Remote — But A Dream Gig)

Many Hopes is looking for a videographer to document Brett “The Rev” Durbin’s 11th Kilimanjaro summit this June — a fundraising climb supporting their work rescuing and educating children from extreme poverty in Kenya and Malawi.

The gist:

• Where: Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (19,341 ft — the tallest free-standing mountain in the world)

• When: June 2026 (approx. 7–9 day climb window)

• Who covers what: Climb, lodging, and guide fees are covered — you’d likely need to handle flights to Tanzania (worth asking, sometimes they sponsor travel too if you’re producing deliverables)

• What they need: Someone who can shoot + edit short-form social content on the mountain and a longer recap/fundraising film after. Drone experience is a huge plus. You should be physically capable of multi-day high-altitude trekking with gear.

• What you get: A fully sponsored climb of one of the Seven Summits, footage rights for your own portfolio (negotiate this in writing), and a meaningful story tied to a real impact org — exactly the kind of project that gets you onto bigger NGO and travel brand rosters after.

Insider Tips: The Art of Negotiation

I want to talk about this because it’s been the biggest mindset shift for me this year, and I think it’ll help a lot of you too.

If you’re like me, the second a brand asks “what’s your rate?” your stomach drops, you slash your number by 30%, and you whisper a price like you’re asking for a favor. I’ve done this a LOT. And every time, I left money (and self-respect, honestly) on the table.

Here’s what I’m learning:

1. Know your floor BEFORE the conversation starts. Decide your absolute walk-away number before the brand emails you. If you wait until they ask, you’ll pull a number out of nervousness. I write mine down in my Notes app so I literally cannot lowball myself in the moment.

2. Counter with a number, not a question. If they offer $300 for something you think is worth $600, don’t reply “is there any room?” Reply “I’d love to make this work at $600 given X, Y, and Z.” Specific number, brief reason, no apologizing.

3. Anchor with comps. “My current rate for a 30-second voiceover + raw assets is $X. For this scope I’d quote $Y.” They don’t need to verify it — they just need to feel like your rate is rooted in real work.

4. Bundle, don’t shrink. When a brand pushes back, don’t drop your number — drop a deliverable instead. “Happy to meet you at $400 if we trim to one video instead of two.” You protect your hourly value while solving their budget problem.

5. Silence is a tactic. After you send the counter, DO NOT follow up the same day apologizing or softening it. Let them sit with it. First person to fill the silence usually loses.

6. Negotiate non-money too. Usage rights. Whitelisting fees. Revision rounds. Payment terms (NET 30 vs NET 7). A signed contract with NET 7 and 2 revision rounds is sometimes worth more than a higher rate that takes 60 days to land.

7. The “no” tells you who they are. If a brand ghosts after you held your number, they were never going to be a good partnership. If they come back lower and rude, also not your client. The brands who respond thoughtfully — even when they can’t fully meet your number — are the ones worth building with.

8. Save the emails that worked. Every time a negotiation lands well, save the email. Build a swipe file. You will never have to write the “thanks for the offer, here’s my counter” message from scratch again.

The whole game is convincing yourself that asking for what you’re worth is a normal, boring, professional thing — not a confrontation. Boring is the goal.

2. Collabstr

I looked into all the apps that everyone was recommending online and I found this to be the best so far. I haven’t been offered an abundance of deals per se, but I did land two collaborations on this site - one for $300 for three VO’s (no video, and they provide the script), and another for $50 for one video.

3. Upwork

There are so many UGC deals on here and I feel like no one talks about it. It’s useful to build up your profile before applying, but everyone starts somewhere. I got offered a UGC deal for $75 for one video (unfortunately, I had to decline it because I didn’t align with the product), but I’ve seen opportunities for hundreds to thousands on this site.

4. Popfly

For anyone interested in the outdoorsy side of travel, Popfly has really great UGC collaborations with reputable brands that often pay pretty well.

5. Bento

This is perfect for anyone looking for an easy, organized way to pitch a bunch of companies at once. I spent one full day on Bento, organizing how I’d structure my general pitch for hotels, excursions, and restaurants (as I’m focusing on the travel niche mainly right now), and ended up sending 120 pitches. Out of that 120, 14 responded, and three said yes to a free excursion in Hawaii, two gave me media-discounted stays, and I’m in touch with a few more pending approval. I always add a personalized note to go with it, which takes time, and honestly not totally sure if it’s worth it. I think it’s all a numbers game when you’re first starting out.

Here’s the EXACT pitch that landed me collabs:

I came across your Instagram when searching for Oahu tours, and I absolutely love your content and catamaran tours.

I recently collaborated with Travel + Leisure and generated over 1.5 million views across their socials. If you’re interested, I’d love to help you do the same by highlighting:

Is this a condition of society? Was I fed too much of the brainwashing scam they instil in us in the womb that success is defined by how much you move up the corporate ladder… or was I really not living up to my potential?

When I graduated from college, three years ago at this point (oof), I had no goals, but I was fulfilled. I was objectively successful at that point - by all measures. I had graduated valedictorian with 1800 hours of community service, worked 2-3 internships at all times, and babysat on the side to make extra dough. My big thing - I never wanted to rely on anyone else - I still don’t. I think that’s one of my deep-rooted fears from childhood. That’s besides the point - apologies, my undiagnosed ADHD and TikTok brain do get the best of me most of the time.

Regardless, I was contributing meaningfully. My senior year I worked with Afghan refugees who moved onto my campus, this was right after the Taliban had taken over. It was a woman just a few years older than I, her two-year-old son, Aboo, and her husband, who was a translator for the US military and that’s how they got asylum without citizenship (pre-Trump).

I didn’t do much, honestly. I just offered her friendship. There was no catch, I wasn’t getting paid and the documentary I was supposed to produce about them never became of anything (but if you look at my resume, it did, so let’s keep that between my 14 subscribers here).

But to this day, I think that’s one of the best things I’ve ever done with my life-

and one of the rarest things that comes up in conversation.

The second best thing I’ve done with my minuscule existence happened two days ago.

My sister and I are visiting Hawai’i for the week and we decided to take a shelter dog out for the day. They require a donation of $50 - it was easily the best $50 I’ve ever spent.

We spent the entire day spoiling that puppy. We took her on a hike, to the park, she swam at the beach - which she LOVED by the way, got her a pup cup, and took her back to our Airbnb to clean her before giving her back.

I knew that made a difference. I knew Tawny had the best day ever, and I was the reason why - to me, that felt special.

I don’t think I have to make a difference on a massive scale, I’m okay with making a little impact as long as it’s a positive impact. I feel like I’ve lost that part of myself for the past two years. I’ve been so focused on work, on making money, and grinding that I haven’t given back. I used to love giving back - what changed?

I know life gets in the way and nonprofits may feed the soul, but they don’t exactly pay. I want to get a bag while spreading kindness and I think I can. I’m not exactly sure how yet - I feel like I have two brains, my work brain and everything else, and I just need to figure out how to combine the two.

From now on, I’m going to travel with intention. That’s not to say I’m not going to go out and get drunk, or quit building my own business up - but I’m going to dedicate more time to things that matter, something that AI could never replace - empathy and human connection.

I do believe you can have it all. And I believe you can have it all at once.

I was flying full-time as a flight attendant and navigating career opportunities that presented themselves to me. I wasn’t picky, well, not at first. I took whatever job I could get for the price it was presented at face value because I assumed that:

(1) It would teach me a skill I didn’t already have and therefore could use for the next employer,

(2) I didn’t really know what I was worth as a recent college grad and

(3) I could always quit.

Here’s why I wouldn’t change a thing:

Every job I said yes to did teach me something new, either a new skillset or something about myself and my interests.

For instance, I went to school for journalism, but when I got the opportunity to work on a podcast for a well-known journalist whose views I didn’t exactly align with, I quickly realized this wasn’t the ‘dream job’ I had cracked it up to be. I learned that I liked journalism, but not so much the production side of things, and I wasn’t willing to see it through.

BUT - I learned about podcasts, I learned what it took to be a PA, I learned about content creation for someone with millions of followers - all skills transferable and valuable as an addition to my portfolio.

Another example - I became a flight attendant after college, which instilled this love for travel in me. I knew being a flight attendant wasn’t my end-all, be-all, but I also knew I wanted to explore the world while still having roots somewhere. Now, I’m able to write and create content for travel brands while still contributing to my 401K and working for a Fortune 500 company.

Number two: not knowing my worth.

I started my side hustle on Upwork, charging $20 an hour for basically any work anyone would send my way. My first job was a 1200-word article about swimming with sharks in Hawai’i for $40 that read more like a college essay than anything else and didn’t even get published in the magazine that paid me. (He was nice enough to tip me though).

The next was a political piece - 800 words for $20, not sure where that went either.

Until I finally landed my first consistent gig work: a generalist content writer for a web hosting platform called Hoot Host. My job was to write blogs using AI (lightly), which at the time was the start of ChatGPT, so it was not high quality by any means. Their clients ranged from CBD oil to lawyers to Reiki, so I was always learning and writing about new topics.

I was good at this, and I enjoyed it. I was so good that the boss started letting me take over social media accounts for his clients with little supervision and eventually gave me a raise to an $1,800 a month contract instead of $20/hour for part-time work. The crazy part - he wanted to pay me more - and somehow I negotiated myself down because I insisted it wasn’t going to take me that long.

Learn from me and never do that. If your boss insists it’s going to take X amount of hours and you think it’ll take less, don’t tell them, take the extra money and work another job with that free time - or go to the beach, I guess it depends on how much they’re paying you.

One thing to know - a lot of employees SUCK.

And I mean really really suck. As someone who’s done the hiring myself, it’s hard to find good talent, and I’ve hired people with hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers thinking they knew more than I did. They didn’t.

This is to say BE A GOOD EMPLOYEE AND I GUARANTEE YOU’LL GET A RAISE - QUICKLY.

You may not be able to negotiate your dream salary during the interview process, but more often than not, if you show your employer you can consistently produce high-quality work within a timely manner, they would rather pay you more than lose you and risk

(1) not finding someone half as good or reliable and

(2) having to train someone else, which takes time out of their day that they could be using to focus on revenue-driving tasks.

and if not - you could always quit.

Segue perfectly to the most taboo topic of them all - quitting.

Boy do I LOVE to quit things, me and almost every other successful founder you know. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates - they never finished college. Walt Disney dropped out of high school. Emma Grede, who helped found SKIMS, recently spoke about how she quit nearly every job on her guest appearance on the Diary of CEO.

They were all delusional to some level and you need to be to if you want to escape the 9-5 matrix that’s been fed to us.

Let me be clear - you do not need to wait a year to quit a job you know you hate within the first month, you do not need to stay at a job where you’re struggling to pay your bills, and you will find something better.

However, you should always leave on good terms.

I quit my journalism job within the first month and stayed an extra three weeks to train the person replacing me. I received nothing but glowing recommendations from my employers and explicit interest in staying in touch.

There’s a right and wrong way to quit.

THE RIGHT WAY TO QUIT:

(p.s. this is only if you want a long-standing relationship, have respect for the people there, or want to use them as a reference going forward - if you don’t care, then just quit however the hell you want)

DO:

• Quit in person (if possible), if not make it a phone or Zoom call

• Give them 2 weeks notice

• Provide them with a reason they simply can’t be mad about (yes, you can lie)

  • i.e. tell them a recruiter reached out to you and is offering you more money, you need more time off for family purposes and can’t focus accurately on your work, etc.

Honestly, be prepared for them to give you a counteroffer if you’re a good employee, saying you’re leaving for a job that pays more (this literally happened to me, which was surreal) - goes to show you everyone has the right budget with a solid push.

DON’T:

• Just not show up

• Quit over text

• Start playing the blame game with your boss about reasons why you hate them

You and your Chief Icon Assistant document the trip on TikTok and Instagram in real time, going through tours, stays, and experiences curated by the Tourism Whitsundays team. • Open to applicants anywhere — there’s no stated geographic restriction. Heads up the comp’d flights are domestic (i.e. the leg from a major Aussie city to the Whitsundays), so if you’re applying from outside Australia you’d cover your own way over. Worth it for the rest of the package.
