Meanwhile, on that same July 29th, the Silver Spoon Treatment was taking over the West Coast. We headed to SUSHISAMBA in West Hollywood with The Ladies of The Table for a night that was the definition of “extra.” Inspired by the LA golden hour, everyone pulled up in radiant sunset colors, looking like a literal dream.

Under the theme “Lip Service,” the evening was a masterclass in being pampered. I’m in the process of rebuilding my website and everyone knows that in order to build something new, you must first acknowledge where you’ve come from.

So i began browsing my site and I came across my Ted Talk that I did in 2018 called Why You think you’re Ugly.

To date, it has over 3m views on YouTube and wow, do I feel honored? But I also feel sad. Sad that we’re still adopting and allowing ourselves to be coerced into this idea of sameness.

When I decided on the jarring title, It wasn’t to make people feel insecure, quite the opposite, the goal was to empower people to take back their confidence. I wanted to be crystal clear as to why everyone was self selecting to be the same person. It was odd. Same bodies: small waist and oversized ass, arched dark brows and plump lips. And to make a bad situation even worse, Black women who are the prototype of those attributes were also opting in. Getting cosmetic surgery was no longer abnormal, it became a mainstay.

When everyone’s reaching for the same template, anything that makes you you starts to feel like a flaw instead of a signature. That’s how an entire generation ended up feeling ugly while looking, statistically, more “perfect” than any generation before it. Going back to my talk got me to thinking… when and why did we start believing we weren’t enough? And more importantly, how do we fix it?

Many women suffer from lack of confidence because they are looking outside of themselves as the beauty standard. In an industry where the belief of what’s beauty is shrouded by what can sell and preys on what people want to fix, I am encouraging you to have a little more confidence. The reason you think you’re ugly is because the beauty industry is not designed to make you feel beautiful. The goal is to make you reliant on a set of products and procedures that will give you beauty. But please know, beauty is in you, it isn’t on you!

When I created The Lip Bar, our goal was to challenge the beauty standard. That was literally our tag line. We even made shirts that we’d wear to tradeshows adorned with expletives. “ Fuck Your Beauty Standards” It was such a middle finger to the industry I wanted to change so that I could have a bit more confidence and so that you could hold your head high even if you didn’t look like the girl in the magazine. Well, today’s magazine has turned into an endless amount of seemingly rich, beautiful and perfect people on the internet who live lives much more lavishly than you.

In hindsight, the shirt should’ve said Fuck Their Beauty Standards because your standard of beauty is the only one that actually matters

In the last 14 years, I have worked tirelessly to show a wide range of what beauty looks like. Highlighting a wide range of skin tones, sizes and shapes has enriched beauty so deeply. The first several years of the brand, we didn’t even have “normal” shades of lipstick. We only had blues, greens, purples, etc. because the goal was to inspire people to be brave enough to be different. Nevertheless, our models have been called unattractive and choosing to center Black Women in beauty and disrupt the idea of who is allowed to participate in beauty has certainly impacted our ability to scale. But still we rose. And we will continue to. But in the interim, we need to work on getting our confidence back up!

So how do you actually get your confidence back? With practice, like anything else!

Audit your feed before you audit your face. You are not insecure for no reason — you’re insecure because you spent three hours looking at people and brands engineered to make you feel that way. Mute, unfollow, dilute. Even Delete! Put some normal human faces back in the mix. This is so hard because Meta barely shows you people you know anymore. The best possible thing is to log off of social for a bit.

Stop editing yourself toward the template.

Every filter you smooth, every feature you shrink, you’re voting for the same-face world and against your own. I promise you are enough! No one is perfect! I can guarantee you that.

Find your version of the lipstick.

Not a fix — a flourish. The thing you do because it’s fun and it’s yours, whether that’s a loud lip, a tattoo, a haircut nobody else has the nerve for. Decoration, not correction.

Talk to yourself like the precious and soft woman you are.

Be kind. Don’t say bad things about yourself. If you don’t like something, work to change it! This is why I have braces at 40! Instead of complaining, I am working towards the smile I want. But in no circumstances am I going to say bad things about myself. And you shouldn’t either!

The truth is, you don’t think you’re ugly. I pray you don’t. But you do think you’re different from the picture perfect people on the internet. And in that instance, I have great news, they don’t even look like that. Case closed.
