I really liked Glennon Doyle’s book We Can Do Hard Things. But lately I’ve been thinking: maybe it’s not just that we can do hard things. Maybe it’s that we should do hard things.

And I don’t mean the hard things that are handed to us - the things we didn’t choose and would happily live without. That’s another essay entirely (and more what the book is about). I’m talking about the hard things we choose: the things that scare us, stretch us, require discipline, force us to persevere, and often make us more capable than we were before.

I keep coming back to a somewhat silly question when I think about this:

Would you rather win a million dollars in the lottery, or do something that earns you a million dollars?

Of course, the first option sounds pretty great. But I think most of us would feel something very different about the second. There is an enormous sense of satisfaction in doing something that challenges you, frustrates you, maybe even makes you want to quit - and then, somehow, you accomplish it.

I think that feeling of accomplishment is a huge part of a happy and fulfilled life. And I bet most people would choose to earn it. And obviously, it doesn’t have to be connected to a million dollars at all. The point is in the doing. The effort. The struggle. The feeling of knowing that you made something happen. Stuck with it through the trying times.

I was talking with Joan about parenthood recently, and we touched on something similar. When kids work hard at something themselves, that sense of achievement is so powerful. You can see it on their faces: I did that. I figured it out. I made it happen.

And yet, so many of us parents - unintentionally, I’m sure - step in and do the hard parts for our kids. Or we do so much of the work that, by the end, the accomplishment isn’t really theirs anymore. “Our” book report. “Our” practice. “Our” application.

It’s understandable. We want to help. We want to make things easier for them. We want them to succeed. But maybe the struggle is the point. I recently came across a powerful quote from a psychiatrist that really gave me pause:

Maybe it’s part of the reason children of wealthy (or overly indulgent) parents sometimes flounder later on: the struggle that might have taught them resilience, resourcefulness, and confidence can sometimes be absent. When everything has been made too easy, there may be fewer opportunities to discover who they are and what they are capable of doing on their own.

So I think it’s not that we shouldn’t just be proud that we can do hard things. Maybe we should also seek them out. And the best part is that we get to choose what kind of hard things we want to do. And it’s not limited to our children.

Maybe it’s a company you’ve wanted to start. A book or screenplay you want to write. A job you want to get. A degree you want to earn. A race you want to run. A mountain you want to climb. A place you want to live. An Etsy shop you want to create. A Substack you want to start (!!)

Think about what you’ve been putting off. The thing you keep telling yourself you’re not ready for, or that you don’t have time for, or that would be too hard. Maybe that’s exactly the thing worth doing.

Ok, moving on to the house, more specifically, the bathroom…

Sometimes it’s best to just skirt the issue.

As my girls all know, I am a little obsessed with skirting. I love it in bathrooms and kitchens and yes, it’s very European. Since I don’t really have anything to skirt here in my apt I will be telling them - and all of you - to skirt something you don’t love! Keep in mind, even if you have an unattractive pedestal sink or cheap builders grade vanity you can just wrap a little skirt on it with some double stick tape and voila. Check Etsy for help getting one made.

And while all of these bathrooms have skirting they are also such great examples of treating the bathroom like any other room in your house. From lighting to rugs to antiques to artwork to just having fun with color and patterns. Add a candle, a pile of fresh towels, a plant or vase of flowers. So many of these ideas are accessible to all: from rentals to all budgets. . There are so many fun ways to add warmth and charm to your bathroom. From Home Goods or Target lamps to flea market finds.

A fab Parachute X Target collab has just launched and I already ordered these sheets and duvet that seem very aligned with my bedroom colors. While I do adore my Boll & Branch bedding, I needed a second set - and this 100% organic line is like half the price!

My daughter was laughing about her new Aura frame and how she and her husband are now seeing photos of themselves from just a few years ago and already thinking about how much younger they looked. She’s 31, for the record. hah I told her, “Just you wait!”

But the truth is, we will never be younger than we are today.

So I hope you’re really living your life and not putting things off until some later date when you think you’ll have more time, more money, more energy, or when everything is somehow “just right.” Because I’m here to tell you, as someone turning 59 very soon, that life seems to be moving at warp speed.

I also hope you don’t think, if you are older, that you have to accept a less fun version of yourself now. As luck would have it, I came across the most perfect illustration of this exact message yesterday - and it’s from someone older than me!

This is Serena Fresson diving off a cliff in Italy yesterday. She’s 65 years old! And in her post she also included that it will probably be her Christmas card this year - which is absolute perfection. lol

Follow her on instagram @serena_fresson to be endlessly amused. She runs a fabulous table top business with her daughter @mrsalice (they also have a podcast that I am going to start listening to). She’s a wife, mom, grandmom and just doing it all and having so much fun. She’s also always wearing fab outfits and super chic glasses (like these Vicci ones I just got and LOVE) so yes, I am here for it all.

Someday, if we’re lucky, we’ll look back at photos of ourselves from right now and think, Wow. I looked pretty good. And yes…I was so young. Or at least younger! And, most importantly, had so much fun.

So I hope you are gearing up for your own cliff jump! Because this version of you is the youngest you’re ever going to be. And that feels like a pretty good reason to make the most of her.

Let’s start with one of my favorite shots from Vogue’s September issue. I love this look so much and it’s one so many of us can interpret in our own way.

Above Gigi is wearing distressed Levi’s with a gorgeous silk Givenchy top. The jeans are completely attainable to all. The top is where you can get a little more creative. Romantic silks and jacquards and interesting asymmetrical styles are trending, so keep an eye out for one that speaks to you - whether it’s vintage, designer, or a great find at a more accessible price point. I do love this splurgy VB one. Or, maybe pull out that top you normally save for dressier occasions and throw it on with your distressed jeans. It’s the high low combination that makes it look so good. Effortless, chic, cool - and yes, ageless.

Keep in mind I am seeing this style shoe everywhere - and for significantly higher price points - so you should really grab yours now before they sell out. They look particularly chic with a slightly slouchy jean.

Also in the September issue: lots of classic tweeds, plaids and checks, along with plenty of that power-woman style we talked about on Sunday which is perfectly illustrated with this Favorite Daughter look.

There was also lots of classic button-up shirts layered under blazers, both fitted and belted, and plenty of polished, business-inspired looks. I ordered this blue white cuff shirt and I am seriously eying the plaid one. I love the idea of taking more tailored pieces and styling them with a distressed jean to make the whole thing feel a little cooler and more relaxed but if you’re heading to the office there are lots of more professional ideas for fall.

My friend from J McLaughlin gave me this chic belt that I have been wearing on repeat and I already tried it on with this chic and washable blazer for fall and it’s perfect. This is the type of belt you need for this look because it’s completely adjustable - plus it’s Hermes vibes without the $$$

And these grey flannel heels are getting some serious love on Instagram, and I can see why. They feel so right for the season and tap perfectly into those tweedy, distinctly British vibes that are everywhere right now.

LKO Tip: If you’re not interested in a distressed pair of jeans, keep in mind Levis makes so many styles (and are CBK approved) and they come in some great fits, finishes and colors which make them an ideal and inexpensive way to upgrade your fall wardrobe. The daily joy that I get from this striped umbrella is not to be believed. I love sitting under it, I love looking at it and I love how this simple addition has completely transformed how the entire little terrace feels. My sister in law was recently here and said it feels like Italy out there and that comment couldn’t have made me happier!

If you have a spot where an umbrella would work I highly recommend grabbing one PLUS they are ON SALE - and there are lots of other tres chic outdoor goodies also on sale.

Beauty

I know. I’m still talking about this line….I recently read an article about all the things we do as women to look and feel our best and, wow it can be A LOT. And a lot of money too. And as we age, it seems to only amp up!

I think I’ve dialed things back in some ways and dialed up in others. I’m definitely paying more attention to supplements, hormones, and sleep than I ever have. At the same time, I’ve really simplified my skincare routine and cut out so many of the steps I used to think I needed. I guess that’s why I’m really loving the Aramore line. I also love that my routine is now one product in the morning (and sunscreen) and three at night. That’s it.

One of the things that keeps coming up when I read about aging skin is NAD+, a molecule involved in cellular energy. Aramore’s approach was developed by Harvard and MIT scientists whose research focuses on skin stem cells and cellular metabolism. The brand uses NAD+ precursors, along with ketones and fatty acids, to support NAD+ production in the skin.

Let’s end with a little manifestation PSA: what you think about, you bring about. So pay attention to your thoughts and be intentional about what you want to create in your life.

1. Decide what you want. Write it down.

2. Believe it’s possible. Like, really believe it.

3. Start feeling what it feels like to have the future you want. Feel it as if it’s already yours.

And then start setting up your life around that vision. What you wear. What your home looks like. Your daily habits and how you take care of yourself. The plans you make. The things you say yes - and no - to. All of it.

Start becoming that future version of yourself in all the little ways, every single day. Because the life you want isn’t something you magically arrive at one day. You start creating it now. And before you know it, you’ll look around and realize you’re living it.

Hope you’re having a fab weekend. We just made the yummiest dinner last night and thought I’d share this pork chop recipe again. I am not someone that makes pork a lot so it has to be really good for me to keep making this!! It’s all about the quality of the meat so get the best chops you can find.

We also just finished the new Cape Fear show (Apple TV) if you’re looking for something to watch. It’s SUPER creepy and gave me anxiety but I couldn’t stop watching. The house (and lighting!) was also quite gorgeous so, when you’re not terrified, you may appreciate the design aesthetic as well! haha

OK, I’ve been going through Fall/Winter 2026, and there is A LOT to talk about. Also, I am officially no longer shopping for summer - but if I do buy anything, it’s going to be highly intentional. So, maybe think about anything you wished you had gotten this summer but didn’t…because that should definitely go on your list when checking out all of the upcoming sales!

Fall Trends Loading…

The colors alone are enough to get me excited: rich chocolate brown, burnt olive and moss green, tomato red and deep eggplant, with some really fun pops of chartreuse, marigold yellow and bubblegum/festival pink.

Here’s my first stab at the things I like that align with what I’ve been reading and seeing. Again, this is just a jumping off point - and it’s also things I like, regardless of whether they’re trending or not! Let’s dive in.

• There’s a darker, more romantic side to fall: lace, corsetry, high necks, asymmetric hems and a little Victorian-ish drama. Love the idea of a lace trimmed cami with a cardigan or blazer. Saw our chic Charleston influencer in this orange Doen one and found this super pretty one and this one that are not as pricy. Also, like the idea of a lace trimmed long skirt or silky pants with a chunkier sweater. If you’re not into the lace but like the look, this skirt seems versatile and will give you a similar vibe.

• Speaking of sweaters…get a few good ones. Less is more. I am pulling the trigger on this one that I’ve wanted forever. It’s considered the best Row dupe out there. I returned the ivory J McLaughlin because I didn't like the color but still love this one that is still available (v limited). And love this chunky cotton one too, especially great for fall. I will have a few good ones that I will wear on repeat and not piles of ones I don’t love. And make sure you have a great white shirt for layering. I also got several of these refined, slightly dressier tees also for layering (on sale) and love them. Super great fit and quality.

• Always love chocolate brown so I’m glad it’s trending (hah) and this brand has my attention. I own two pairs of pants so far and live in them. Such a great fit. Getting these slouchy brown cords next. Trust me. Try their jeans or best selling drawstring pants - I have these olive ones for fall - and the best part is you get to size down!

  

• Checks, tartans and gingham are back, which gives us plenty of classic options. Love this jacket and this skirt, together it’s a very power girl moment which is also a thing this fall. Although I’d probably wear the jacket with jeans and the skirt with cute sweater.

• Plus: jacquard, fur and shearling, funnel-neck jackets, appliqué, shroud-like knitted capes and wraps casually thrown over the shoulders…all great ideas for injecting new life into your classic looks. Love this classic wrap and it’s also the best travel accessory ever. Lily Sisto shared it, along with her other favorite that’s 3x the price. I picked the J Crew one. hah! This one is on sale if you want an oatmeal color.

• Accessories are doing a lot of the work. Animal-print accessories, fringe and tassels, layered necklaces, tinted/futuristic sunglasses, and slouchy bags are all easy ways to jump into the trends without going head-to-toe. Get these affordable yet tres chic shoes and or this phone case to add a little animal print to your looks. Trendy, yet also v classic.

• Bohemian romance meets modern tailoring - think softer, more romantic pieces mixed with something structured. Love these chic pants, again, more likely with a sweater for me but also love the idea of them with a classic white shirt or a super dressy top for a special night out (or in).

• Shoes are an easy way to elevate your look. Ballet flats are still around, but mules and other more directional shoes are joining the mix. Got these chocolate brown suede ones (also a Lily Sisto pick) that are a more modern take on the ballet flat and they are a 10 out of 10. Grab them before they’re sold out.

I think the best part is that you really don’t have to embrace all of it - pick the ideas that feel like you and have fun with them.

Here’s a great fall assignment…

Make a short list of what’s actually missing from your closet so when you shop, you buy with intention - not impulse. One truly great piece will always serve you better than a pile of things you got on sale (or impulsively purchased). And, if it happens to align with something from this season’s trends, it’s a bonus!

All great looks starts with great skin

If you’re looking to inject a little brightness, firmness and overall youthfulness into your skin I am really loving the products in this NAD line and cannot recommend them enough. It’s fast, lightweight and a two-to-three-step daily process.

Happy Sunday, My LKO Friends!

OK. Some of you may come at me for this, but I have to share something I heard a while ago that has stayed with me...

A seamstress here in Hoboken, originally from Italy, tailored a dress for me and, along the way, she shared many of her “life thoughts.” She’s in her mid 70s, very much a character, and has very strong opinions. One thing she said that really stuck with me was how many women she sees wearing cheap eyeglasses. Her words:

And honestly… she has a point.

As women, we spend so much time and money (or at least many of us do, haha!) caring for our skin, hair, and makeup, yet we’ll grab those inexpensive readers and wear them every day - and yes, out to dinner and even at special occasions! Hair, make-up and jewelry chosen intentionally, readers thrown on with minimal thought.

For my younger readers, file this one away for later - or share it with your moms! But this does apply to anyone who wears eyeglasses, no matter your age.

I am willing to bet most of you don’t buy your sunglasses in three packs at CVS or grab them from a pile at the checkout counter - so why do so many women buy readers that way?

And I know what some of you are thinking: “But I always lose my glasses!” To which I’d counter: Do you always lose them because they’re cheap? I’ve found that when you invest in something, you tend to take better care of it and keep better track of it. Kind of like a good pair of sunglasses (that most likely sit in their nice case in your bag).

So, it all comes down to investing in the things you wear every day - especially the things you put directly on your face.

This philosophy aligns pretty perfectly with what we talk about so often here at The LKO Edit: less is more, and quality over quantity. Invest in the things you wear every day, rather than constantly buying more.

I recently ordered these glasses, but I also love these and these - and I have to say, so they have sp many styles that are v chic. Not inexpensive, but definitely less than Gucci! I kind of love the idea of making my glasses a bit of a fashion-forward moment rather than just something simply to see better. I needed progressives, which they offer, so I’ll report back once I receive them. But I’m already pretty excited about them.

LKO Sidebar thought: We spend so much money on shoes, yet they’re literally under the table for most of dinner. Meanwhile, those inexpensive readers we grab without thinking are sitting right on our face, front and center. Hmm…

I used to consult for this chic eyeglasses brand that’s more affordable than Vicci but still offers significantly better quality - and I like a lot of their styles. I would pick this style for a chic, timeless look and this style for a more modern, trendy vibe.

One of the things you’ll notice when you upgrade your readers is the difference in the details: the quality of the lenses, the spring hinges, and the overall lightness of the frame. Not to mention, the look itself is much more elevated. Cheap frames and lenses can be pretty obvious, tbh.

SO consider this your memo to treat your eyeglasses as an accessory, not an afterthought!

OK. Moving on to other things above the neck…but obv including the neck!

Best Hair Towel, Full Stop - I cannot stop recommending this hair towel. Once you use one, the idea of wrapping your hair in a heavy towel that pulls and tugs is just a hard no. It’s one of those little life upgrades you don’t realize you need until you try it. LKO Pro Tip: the little elastic strap goes at base of your neck so you can tuck the end of the towel in it so it feels snug and comfy. It’s also apparently better for the health of your hair so that’s a nice bonus.

Clean Dry Shampoo MIST! - I recently tried this non aerosol dry shampoo spray that is unlike any other dry shampoo I’ve ever tried and, I have to say, it’s pretty magical. It gives your hair that freshened-up, non greasy feeling without the powdery residue I experience with all other dry shampoos. And I’m not inhaling anything in the air!

Round L’Ange Hair Dryer - I am LOVING this rounded hair dryer. I use it with their full grit texturizing spray and wow - the volume is insane. I am not particularly talented when it comes to doing my hair, so anything that makes it easy to get some volume is a winner in my book. Highly recommend - and it’s way less than a Dyson (and on sale)!

Face Ice Roller - NO BRAINER if you have any upcoming special occasions! This will reduce the appearance of puffiness and redness and give your face a refreshed, radiant glow. My sister took hers to Brazil (where she’s teaching a summer program) and has mentioned it twice to me already. Amazing for jet lag and also apparenty when getting up early to teach a class full of students!

And finally, my J.McLaughlin sale order update: Speaking of necks, this cashmere turtleneck sweater is gorgeous and fits perfectly - and is divine for anyone who doesn't love their neck. hah! Not too tight or too high. I got a medium in brown and just ordered the ivory. This striped shirt, however, is very boxy and just large in all the wrong places, so it’s going back. I will say, their shipping is amazing and the quality is great. Check out the amount of great stuff under $100 - from chic straw hats to cute bag, even a v cute bathing suit I’m tempted to grab!

I started the LKO Edit because I just didn’t see enough people I could relate to on social media. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing and hearing from people of all ages, but there did seem to be a rather large void when it came to my own age group.

I also know how much I’ve learned over the years from people who were a few steps ahead of me, and figured there might be some value in sharing some of my own life lessons and experiences along the way here too.

Very often, it’s not about getting everything right. It’s about having the time and space to reflect on past decisions and experiences, and realizing that those reflections can sometimes make you a useful resource for others. And, of course, sometimes that means sharing what not to do! Haha. There are also so many things to share that have nothing to do with how old we are - and that’s fun too.

Today’s edit: The sale at J. McClaughlin continues and what I ordered, the J. Crew picks that made the cut, a new to me costume jewelry brand that has a cult like following and Joan’s Baby Shower highlights.

Let’s get started with some shopping updates…

I’ve grabbed a few things because I do have some travel coming up this fall and I have a few gaps in my wardrobe…and I am already seeing things sell out that I thought I would grab later. So don’t wait if you’re thinking you want something!

1. J. Mclaughlin - I am a sucker for super expensive sweaters on major sale…this cashmere turtle was $428 down to $149 and I love the look of this stripe top…I also love that nothing is final sale.

2. J. Crew. Grabbed the fine corduroy version of my favorite relaxed summer style pant, grabbed this brown ballet flat that’s been an influencer fave and a few dressy tees on sale. Love the idea of a tee, fitted cardigan and these pants with a ballet flat for fall.

3. Went down the rabbit hole with this brand and decided on this bracelet to stack with my real ones…I follow some influencers that stack it with their real jewelry and it looks fab. This necklace is also v chic. Would make fun little gifts!

Kicking off some shower highlights with some of my DIY projects…

Joan’s mother in law, Beth, and I had a lot of fun pulling together a very sweet baby shower this past weekend at a restaurant in Hoboken. Some fun touches that I thought I’d share are as follows;

1. We bulk ordered daisies from a fab store in Hoboken called Beethoven’s Veranda for any locals. The invitation was yellow with daisies so we ran with it as the theme. We used a variety of clear vases we already owned. And interspersed them with some classic toys that Beth and I purchased . It looked so cute.

2. I saw super chic place cards online with little bows that were quite pricey so I grabbed some ribbon and glue from amazon and did all 18 for probably $20. I was thinking a plaid for the holidays would be so pretty…

3. I had extra BonBon Swedish candy bags from Georgia’s welcome gifts so I went back to the NYC store for a fresh load of candy and got cute little personalized stickers from Minted.

4. I ordered balloons and different color gingham ribbon from amazon that I just brought to a local store the day before - trust me, upgrading your ribbon and balloons is so easy and looks so much cuter!

5. The yellow stripe runner is paper and comes in a ton of fun patterns and prints. Looked great and was considerably less expensive than any cloth options. They have tons of options for all types of parties.

And a real highlight was all the personalized bibs and après lait cloths (that sounds so much better than burp cloths, right?) And also happens to be very on-brand for my French parenting book obsession. So I ordered these organic cotton cloths and these bibs and used this decal site to create all the iron-on messages and little sayings.

Another great gift idea: Joan’s mother-in -law bought the cutest tiny roller suitcase (image above) and filled it with their family’s favorite children’s books. Such a fun and thoughtful idea - and particularly great for gender neutral showers!

LKO Edit Movie and Book Rec: Remember this movie when you’re scrolling trying to find something to watch this weekend! This is an old rom com we recently watched called How Do You Know? and we really enjoyed it. So few good romcoms being made these days so I think we all need to resort to the old ones! Starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson….it will make you laugh and feel good about love.

And I’m reading London Falling which is really good - and a true and truly insane story.

How many parents out there have said on more than one occasion that they want to come back as their kids?! Well, yes, me too! Especially when seeing these photos...

Where they are staying is actually a hotel that has a variety of room and apartment options, including this villa. I will share all of the feedback from Vivi after the trip but lucky for them they are currently still there!. And keep in mind, this is not an Indagare hotel (meaning it’s not crazy expensive!) This is their villa’s private pool, with steps to the mediterranean...

OK I have a few thoughts on this European book club getaway, big-picture style…

1. It’s never too late. If a book club trip somewhere far-flung sounds fabulous, start planning. Why not?

2. If you’ve always dreamed of living abroad, maybe it’s time to actually look into it. A month? A year? There are ways to make these things happen.

3. Have older kids who aren’t exactly thriving? Maybe a move abroad is just what they need.

4. Think bigger. The world is BIG, and sometimes our little worlds get pretty small. Get out there. Life is short, people!

5. Kids heading to college? Encourage them to go somewhere that stretches them a bit. Our girls went from NY to California and it was one of the best decisions ever. They got a whole new coast, amazing friends and experiences and we got the bonus of having a built-in excuse to visit California. Win-win. (And yes, it works post-college too. Case in point: I’m currently planning our UK Thanksgiving.)

6. And finally… move. Maybe not to another country (although, if you can, I say go for it!), but if moving has been on your mind, think about it. We’ve moved several times over the course of our marriage and I truly wouldn’t have it any other way. We experienced many different ways of living and made lifelong friends along the way.

And as for secret manuscripts….this particular book club trip involves the manuscript of Joan’s next novel, which is actually set in Italy - Lake Como, not the Amalfi Coast - and yes, there is a gorgeous old villa involved. Her new book, Bad Best Friend, is being published by HarperCollins and comes out spring 2027. Here they all are reading it…

So far the text accompanying this image from vivi says simply: “Everyone LOVING Bad Best Friend!” Stay tuned for more hot off the presses scoop as this book moves along.

Another exciting development: A Killer Wedding is coming out in paperback - with a brand-new cover! HarperCollins has been doing this with some books as a marketing strategy, and I have to say, even though we all loved the original cover, I’m really into this one. It’s so fun and basically screams, “Take me on vacation!”

And now for a few Italy inspired ideas…

Recently discovered this clean candle company with great branding that’s non-toxic and reasonably priced. Such a fun gift right?

Kind of love this picture…reminds of what they would actually do in Italy on the tennis courts. And a stripe sweater anyone? NOT a new idea here at the LKO Edit hah but this sweater vibes a lot like the ones above…and would look perfect with your jean shorts as the cooler weather starts to come in.

I also really love this stripe rollneck cardigan and yes, this reversible one currently remains in my cart. Decisions decisions…

And red ballet flats just say your living la dolce vita no matter where you are! Georgia had hers on from her trip to Rome this summer for Joan’s shower (content coming soon!) and was fielding compliments the entire time. These look a lot like them. I’m also intrigued by this more modern, slightly edgier style that apparently has been seen on some celebs recently. I am telling you we all need red ballet flats in our lives!

And this best selling shirt remains an easy yes. Saw it on a major influencer that’s usually dripping in Chanel and it holds up alongside her tres expensive wardrobe brilliantly. Love the idea of the light blue one with jeans and the red ballet flats…

And I’ll leave you with a major sale happening right now. My friend Kathy came up from Charleston for the shower and breezed off the ferry in the most elegant navy ensemble and she looked oh so chic!

She works for J.McLaughlin and had brought so many gorgeous pieces (and shoes!) with her, including these pants above. They are SO good. The fabric is incredibly light and lovely, and the style is effortlessly chic.

Today’s edit: Kitchen essentials, a chic laundry find, another great Ina recipe (perfect for tomato season) and a gorg children’s brand sale - yes, European - for anyone shopping for little ones.

Kicking this kitchen issue off with some memory lane photos of our kitchen in Lake Placid, a favorite that I do still really miss at times!

Highlights: massive wine fridge from our wine store days, two dishwashers, a warming drawer, a banquette (made with wooden wine boxes) and a gas fireplace.

Does it make life better, easier, more beautiful, or more enjoyable?

That’s the lens I use for the LKO Edit so I hope something below checks at least one of those boxes for you - and your kitchen.

But first. I am laughing because Joan recently sent me this meme when I was complaining about our cute, but poorly equipped, kitchen in the Adirondacks..

That would be a funny show, right?! I did successfully use the old fashioned hand crank mixer for whipped cream from our rental for anyone who cares…

Ok moving on to my ultimate inspiration when it comes to all things kitchen related: Ina Garten! You can actually see my Barefoot Contessa cookbook collection in my LP kitchen photo above!

I was lucky enough to discover Ina early on in our marriage and she played a very huge role in my love of cooking and entertaining. This picture (in a Burberry apron from my sis that I still have!) was taken around that time.

I vividly remember reading a newspaper article about her first book in USA Today (is that even around anymore?) I loved how she talked about food: keep it simple, fresh, in season, and accessible for everyone. And from the very beginning, she’s been saying that you don’t have to make everything from scratch. Buy that dessert from the French bakery and/or assign that salad to your friend!

That’s incredibly freeing when you’re hosting. Especially since Martha Stewart and Julia Child were ruling the world back then, and neither one, I can personally attest, was about making it easy on the chef! I’d much rather make one or two yummy things, set a beautiful table and actually have fun with my guests than kill myself making everything from scratch.

Ok. On to the things, big and small, that I rely upon regularly when in my kitchen. In no particular order.

1. Cast Iron pans and a few Le Creusets. The cast iron ones all make incredible serving pieces too so you can go straight from the oven to the table. Ditch any nonstick pans, they are not good for you. And if you have like 20+ pots and pans in your kitchen you need to edit! Less is more. And this brand makes some good pots for way less than Le Creuset.

2. Better than bouillon - this paste comes in every variety and is a game changer. I learned about it from a chef in Lake Placid and I am baffled by anyone still using those salty cubes or buying tons of cans or boxes of broth. It’s the best option out there - other than making your own broth! And at pretty much all grocery stores.

3. Multiple salts and containers. You need kosher if you are an Ina gal and you need a finishing salt like, Maldon. There are plenty of others but those are my top two. We have it in little bowls by the stove for cooking and in mills for the table.

4. Salt and pepper mills - Often I put salt and pepper mills and a tiny bowl of flakey salt on the table. I love this chic brass set I received as a gift and I also love this style from Addison Ross - it looks like one I have from Italy.

5. Good olive oil. I experiment but there a few ground rules: Organic or responsibly made. Cold pressed. Glass or metal container. Often Europe, but California makes some good ones. Two brands that I use regularly that are v good: Brightland and Kosterina. Another option is to use a less expensive olive oil for cooking and keep the higher-quality one for salads or to finish dishes just before serving.

6. Chic olive oil container - If you are a cook, you are grabbing this daily. Keep it out but make it cute. Joan was complaining she hates filling it because she can’t tell how much is in it. You need to be brave and proceed anyway, Joan, because it’s a nonnegotiable and we all overfill it and spill it on the counter. It’s part of the fun.

7. Good, clean, nice smelling dish soap and dw pods. It matters what you are washing what you eat and drink from every single day. Avoid all the mass produced ones. Nontoxic, effective and fresh smelling dish soap: L’avant Collective (can double as handsoap). And Molly’s Suds DW pods.

8. My herb “garden”- Joan asked for fresh basil from my garden last week and that made me laugh since as you all know it’s a few planters on my terrace! A sign that pretty much anyone can grow some fresh herbs for cooking.

9. A small lamp - Rechargeable or plug-in. I am new to this mood game changer but wow, could not live without the one I grabbed from Home Goods a few months ago. Trust me, add this to a counter and instantly improve the vibes in your kitchen.

10. Emma Bridgewater mugs - Dick asked why I didn’t pack them for our Adirondack vacation if that says enough about our obsession. Once you get used to drinking from them everything else is a disappointment.

11. Smeg appliances - Overpriced and not particularly impressive from an operational standpoint but they are monumentally cuter than everything else out there. So yes, if you have to look at appliances on your counter every day then you need these! The creamy white and light blue are particularly chic.

12. Switched from Rao’s to Carbone marinara sauce and I think it is noticeably better. It’s my cheat sauce for my sort of homemade vodka sauce. And buy the good pasta. It’s twice the price or more and worth every penny. Fun fact: I have been to Raos and yes it was delish. It is literally impossible to get a table there (harder than polo bar) so I'll just continue to remind everyone that I ate there once. hah

13. Just like with good pasta, you need to pay up for good butter. Get the European butter with flakey sea salt. Whole Foods always has a few brands. Trust me.

14. Sodastream - we are a seltzer family. My girls would literally have seltzer with their cake or cookies when they were little. I KNOW. So weird for all my milk lovers to hear, but this is our life. And I love making seltzer with our filtered water. We buy four cannisters at a time directly from the company and they include a free mailer to send the empties back.

15. Berkey water filter - once you really read about tap water you can’t stop using a filter. Unfortunately you often learn about this when battling an illness. But let this be your message to be proactive with your health and get a good filter.

16. Turbinado sugar - for all my bakers, this is the sugar to sprinkle on top of your muffins, scones and cookies. It is completely different than granulated.

17. Real Parmesan - Look for the dotted rind stamp. And never buy pre-grated.

18. Tomato and berry containers - I started the LKO Edit with this recommendation and will never stop telling you to get some. I have a pile of cherry tomatoes in one right now that I’m looking at. If you have plastic containers on your counter why?

19. Glass jugs from amazon filled with organic green tea in the fridge. I find cold green tea so much easier to drink and yes, it is VERY good for us so you should try to drink it regularly too.

20. Kitchen Aid mixer - From mashed potatoes to whipped cream to cookie dough to beating up a dozen eggs for a crowd…it simply is worth its weight (which is saying something!)

21. A good cutting board. Needed a new one and just ordered this, I let another influencer do the work. And I’ve had this brand before - our island in LP was actually made by them!

22. One great chopping knife and one serrated (we have a set from Cutco that honestly needs sharpening) and our Smith & Wollensky steak knives. A set of these makes a great wedding or milestone guy gift.

22. My little bowl collection….from Botswana to Megeve to Mexico to Dubai. A great souvenir idea for when you travel. I always use them and I always think about where I got them from.

23. Cloth napkins, tablecloths and fresh dishcloths on the regular. Confession: our dog always ruins ours and I am late to the refresh game for napkins but thankfully did just grab some fun dish towels from Target. I always admire kitchens that have full drawers of clean, unstained fresh towels and napkins. They are the real heroes of this story (sadly I am not among them, but you know who you are)

24. Flowers and candles. Always. Just makes life nicer. Love little vases mixed with candles that you can leave on the table with dinner

25. Our china and silver. We use the silver daily and the china often. Don’t save the good stuff. Enjoy it. Just like baby clothes, don’t save them, dress them up to go to the grocery store (before you’re packing it away because it’s too small)

26. Our family cookbook from Artifact Uprising, made by Vivi. If you put all your favorite recipes into one place you will be amazed how often you open it for inspiration. And, if you add family pictures of cooking and eating said favorites it’s like looking at a photo album. Best gift ever for any upcoming celebrations.

    

Honorable mention: chic new laundry detergent! Since Georgia and I were just talking laundry room ideas...thought I’d share ours from Charleston. I moved the w/d to the side of the room (contractor literally jammed them in) and it completely transformed the room and the amount of space we had - and I would love to use this fun wallpaper again some day!

I’ve been using Snif laundry detergent now and really like it. It’s clean and chic. I try to avoid parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, and formaldehyde, plus they fully disclose every fragrance ingredient. The best part? My clothes actually smell good. So many “clean” products sacrifice scent, so it’s nice to have both. The scent I use is called Old Money, which always makes me laugh. If you’re still using Tide or another mainstream detergent, it’s worth doing a little research into the ingredients - I’d be surprised if you don’t switch.

LKO Tip: Just because you can get things like laundry detergent and dish soap for a lot less doesn’t mean the more expensive ones are a rip off. It’s like most things made with integrity, high quality and thought, they just cost more. But they’re worth it. Spend the money on the the things you use every day.

Wrapping up with two Ina recommendations. Read her memoir. She was ahead of her time. And make this panzanella salad…a perfect summer side and a good use of your tomato harvest.

Happy Sunday My LKO Friends!

Last night I made this delicious Ina recipe that I’ve been making for years…which is especially perfect during peach season. And I’m now enjoying it with my coffee this morning. Anyone else look forward to breakfast the next day possibly more than dessert itself?

Also, speaking of sweet…we had dinner at Joan and Tom’s this week (celebrating a certain someone’s nursery that was wallpapered by moi!), and Joan made another family favorite: olive oil cake. If that sounds a little unusual to you, trust me - it’s absolutely divine. You need to make it! And I’m quite certain it was enjoyed with coffee over there the next morning as well.

OK. Moving on to things that have caught my attention this week…

Rosie Assoulin x Target - Some super cute stuff here although things are selling out. I grabbed two sets of dish towels (sold out unfortunately) but wow quality and size are impressive. Which leads me to conclude that anything you like that’s left are definitely worth trying, especially these sarongs pictured above. They are so substantial I bet they could double as a beach blanket or small tablecloth (or wrap around anyone with a growing baby bump ;)

Aligne - This waistcoat on the left stopped me in my tracks. Just looks so chic and comfortable and would make a great transition piece, I especially love the collar. The pink is also v pretty and on major sale. This gorgeous top with the knot fastenings is so pretty, love both the cream and navy, and is very Rohe adjacent and would work as a top or layering piece, casual or more dressed up. I also love the style of this cardigan (or jumper, as they say across the pond) and I’m thinking it would be a great piece for our UK fall trip.

Animal print slingback - Another great transitional choice. If you don’t have one yet, what are you waiting for? Love an animal print shoe so much and these would be great with say all white right now and then with jeans and a sweater this fall.

Quince cotton crew - Love this color. Have seen a fair number of influencers wearing theirs lately and I have to say they look considerably more expensive than they are. Lots of colors, including stripes!

White jeans that vibe more like trousers, perfect for fall. A pair of white jeans like this are a year round staple and will look great with a summer top and sandals or boot and sweater. I like a lower rise (on sale) and these high rise are a very trendy look and a great price.

Taffeta Bermuda shorts - Love all the taffeta pants and shorts I’m seeing. Would be so chic for out to dinner or brunch with the gals. The brown is a great transitional color. The little animal print heels above would be perfect with these btw.

Alex Mill Tote - They just released new colors of our favorite tote: a fun purple that’s giving major T. Anthony vibes and a chic espresso that Joan is getting as her diaper bag.

I love all the ways they suggest using it - including “puppy carrier,” which made me laugh. Now all three girls have one: one for a laptop and life around London, one for lunch and residency essentials, and now Joan’s for all the necessities of upcoming motherhood. I’ve always loved matching them so this really speaks to me - although they do all have different color combinations! hah

Another chic drawstring pant…a certain influencer has posted in these often and I always stop and sigh. They are so effortless and cool. I just love the comfort and versatility of this style - and the color is an unexpected neutral, like a light nantucket red. Love them slightly dressed up like above - or with bare feet and a glass of rosé.

Cotton Bra, but make it European - My sister turned me on to this style (love that you can clip the back for anything sleeveless) and I have to say they are like a perfect combination of American practicality with a little European chicness. This is NOT to be confused with your chic lace matching sets but I do think it has a place in our wardrobes!

One of Nantucket’s most established businesses - an antique and artisan shop that’s approaching its 100th anniversary - displayed a sign in their store that reads: “No Influencers.”

That sign sparked a wave of reactions online from, well... a lot of influencers. The most high-profile response came from newly married Dairy Boy founder Paige (Lorenze) Paul, who publicly criticized the message and argued that it dismissed an industry largely built by women.

Since then, the conversation has expanded far beyond a single sign, becoming a debate about tourism, social media, and what happens when a small, historic community collides with the creator economy.

The shop - The Four Winds Craft Guild - just shared a statement on Instagram that offers some context for why they put up the sign in the first place. Whether you agree with their approach or not, it helps explain where they’re coming from:

Personally, I’ve never really been impacted by people filming or creating content where I live - but then again, I don’t live (or summer) on Nantucket.

Nantucket is a relatively small island that has increasingly become a playground for the ultra-wealthy. Its real estate is among the most expensive in the country - and the world - with the average home price close to 5 million. Despite this excess, it’s undeniably beautiful and remains one of my favorite places to visit. With its picture-perfect beaches, charming downtown, and truly beautiful houses, it's easy to understand why it's become such a magnet for content creators (and billionaires).

LKO Random Fun Fact: Nantucket is home to about 75 billionaires during the peak summer season.

The take that resonated with me the most came from Charleston influencer Julia Berolzheimer. She suggests, rather than putting up a sign that says “No Influencers,” why not simply have one that says “Be Considerate”? To me, that gets to the heart of the issue.

We live in a creator economy now. Whether we love it or hate it, content creation has become one of the primary ways businesses market themselves and reach new customers. Influencers aren’t going away, and neither is the desire to capture beautiful places.

The real question probably isn’t whether people should be able to create content - it’s whether they can do it respectfully. Maybe what we really need is an Emily Post guide for influencers (actually it can address more than just influencers!)

Would love to know your thoughts on this issue!

Ok. Moving on to more important things like, my supplement recommendations recently validated on social media…haha

As I recently shared, I’ve done a fair amount of reading over the past year and have experimented with quite a few supplements. There is certainly no shortage of opinions, but I tried to focus on what has the strongest research behind it - and supports healthy aging - so I was excited to see this post! I think it’s overall pretty basic and suggests some very reasonable lifestyle ideas.

I also wanted to share that I now order most of my supplements from iherb (linked below). They’re fast and their pricing is v competitive. And, unlike Amazon, iHerb does not use third-party sellers, meaning they source products directly from the brands and stock them in their own climate-controlled warehouses.

So here’s a round up of what I take daily and why, for the people in the back:

• Vitamin D
  One of the most commonly recommended supplements, especially if you don’t get a lot of sun. Vitamin D supports bone health, immune function, and there is growing research linking healthy levels to mood and overall well-being.

• Magnesium
  This has become a nightly staple for me. Magnesium supports muscle recovery, sleep, and relaxation. Also. Magnesium glycinate targets cellular aging, cognitive decline, and musculoskeletal deterioration by combating chronic inflammation and supporting cellular repair pathways.

• Omega-3
  The research here is hard to ignore. Omega-3s support heart health, help reduce inflammation, and may also benefit brain function. As an added bonus, they’re often recommended for healthy skin by helping support the skin’s natural barrier and hydration. Also a plus for anyone not eating salmon twice a week!

• Vitamin C
  A classic for a reason. Beyond supporting your immune system, Vitamin C plays a key role in collagen production, making it one of the best-researched vitamins for maintaining healthy, glowing skin (and apparently hair!)

• Creatine
  Many people think of creatine as something only athletes use, but the research has become much more interesting in recent years. Yes, it helps improve strength and muscle performance, but studies are also exploring its potential benefits for brain health, cognitive performance, and healthy aging. It’s one of the supplements I’m never stopping. It’s easy to take and inexpensive and the body of research on it seems pretty compelling.

LKO Tip: One of the easiest ways to get a lot of the good stuff into your morning is with a bowl of plain Greek yogurt. I often stir in creatine powder if I’m not making my electrolyte water bottle, then add frozen organic berries, ground flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts. If you’re trying to increase your protein intake, you can even mix in a scoop of protein powder. It’s an easy breakfast that packs protein, healthy fats, fiber, and several nutrients all in one bowl.

Malta Review from our world traveler

Victoria and her friends had a fab time in Malta - despite arriving during a record-breaking heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees and rolling blackouts throughout much of their stay. So, takeaway number one: skip the dead of summer. She said May or October would be absolutely ideal.

As for the destination itself? It completely lived up to The LKO Edit hype.

From Victoria: Malta was a beautiful and interesting country – the sea is stunning, there are several small towns with beautiful architecture, and there are a handful of great restaurants and shops. The country has so many different cultural influences – you’ll find British telephone booths, a language derived primarily from Arabic, and cuisine that is largely influenced by Italy. Malta is also notably more affordable than many other Mediterranean destinations. A plus for those who don’t want to pay the outrageous prices found elsewhere in Europe.

The true star of Malta, however, was the brand-new hotel Casa Bonavita. Now, it isn’t going to win any budget awards, but it would win plenty of beauty contests and sounds well worth the splurge if you’re looking for a special trip in a less-traversed part of the Mediterranean. And remember you can fly directly into Malta from most major European cities – or even take a ferry from Sicily!

LKO Sidebar Note: If you’re in the market for a new suitcase, our family swears by two brands: Paravel and Away. Since Paravel is currently out of business - although rumor has it Antler has acquired the brand and plans to bring it back. (Antler btw is also worth checking out!) Away is the luggage our Indagare gal uses in both carry-on and checked sizes. It strikes that perfect balance of chic design, reliable quality, and luxury without the luxury price tag. Bonus: it also makes a great gift for the frequent traveler in your life!

Ina Garten Recipe Review

Just made this recipe I shared with you guys Sunday and wow. IT IS SO GOOD. I have to admit that it’s so simple that it felt a little surprising for it to deliver such deliciousness. I figured it would be yummy because the ingredients themselves are yummy (especially in the summer) BUT. It is truly mind blowingly good.

We mixed locally grown yellow and red cherry tomatoes and I used a thin spaghetti (couldn’t find angel hair) and the key is to make tomato mixture well in advance. Then it’s as simple as boiling pasta. and adding grated parm. LKO Tip: Would make a perfect dinner party dish.

Also, we added a simple green salad and I experimented with a little deconstructed garlic bread: pan fried sourdough bread in a little olive oil, fresh garlic and red pepper flakes. Topped off with some chopped parsley, flakey salt and grated parm - and wow, so yum. And definitely healthier than my usual garlic bread recipe!

If you need a show

We just finished the final season of The Bear and really enjoyed it. For anyone who thought a few of their seasons went kind of sideways (like us) this final season was largely back to what we originally liked about the show - so we can happily recommend it! And for any Gary Janetti fans out there it was fun to see his cameo!

We’re back from two wonderful weeks in the Adirondacks so I’m sorry this post is a little late in your inbox today!

The weather was absolutely perfect, and while I loved every minute of being away, there’s something about coming home that always feels just as good.

Here are some highlights from our time up north…

A few MVPs from the trip were my J Crew rollneck cotton sweaters and cut-offs, my navy canvas handbag (that my bestie also bought) and our Fieldbar cooler. I gave one to her as a gift so it was truly hysterical when we went out on a booze cruise together with our matching handbags and coolers! hah

I also have to share that J Crew has just come out with a reversible rollneck cardigan that could not be cuter (or more versatile). And I love my off-white cutoffs so much I think I need the jeans version. On sale. They are so easy to wear, both at home (with a rollneck!) or out to dinner with a linen shirt and Canfora sandals. Highly recommend.

OK. So, what’s the one thing all stylish women do?

They mix high and low.

Whether it’s in their wardrobe, their home, or the way they live, the women whose style I admire most aren’t defined by how much they spend. I have almost the same feelings about hiking as I do about skiing. The only difference? Skiing just feels considerably chicer - and I’ll admit it is easier to swoosh down than mountain than hike up it!

So even though hiking doesn’t have quite the same glamorous image as skiing it really does have so much going for it. It’s accessible in a way skiing simply isn’t. It doesn’t require expensive gear or cost a fortune - especially for families - and you get to choose your own adventure. Want an easy walk? Perfect. Want to hike 12 miles with serious elevation? Go for it. There’s truly something for everyone.

In fact, that’s one of hiking’s greatest strengths. We call it a sport, and for people summiting major peaks, it absolutely is. But it’s also one of the few activities where people of almost every age and ability can participate together. On most hikes I see everyone from five-year-olds to hikers well into their 80s, all enjoying the same incredible scenery and sharing that same sense of accomplishment at the end.

So what’s the catch?

For starters, I think it’s the outfits.

Hiking boots, trail shorts or pants and performance shirts simply don’t have the same appeal as a Moncler ski jacket or fabulous fur hat. The overall aesthetic is shall we say..a tad different. Which is probably why we don’t see very many influencers kicking up a leg while sipping a spritz after a 10-mile hike.

But I actually think that’s the opportunity. Hiking deserves the same lifestyle treatment we’ve given skiing. And it can start with some cuter fits.

And there really is so much fun content to create around it - from what to pack for the perfect summit lunch to skincare, to practical-but-chic hiking outfits, cute backpacks, great footwear, and let’s not forget there are some incredibly glamorous places to stay when hiking.

Let’s start with some outfit ideas…

Hiking outfits obviously depend on where and when you’re going and how long you’ll be out on the trail, but one of the first things we learned from the hardcore ADK hikers was this: cotton is the devil. (Their words, not mine.) Moisture-wicking, performance fabrics are your best friend.

So a quick broad brush stroke into this niche world has landed me on a few good brands to consider. Many of whom we already like here at The LKO Edit….

• Here are chic tanks and tees. Cute, well priced trail shorts here and a fun skort here. Here’s a barrel style pant that will take you from the mountains to a Brooklyn farmer’s market, less expensive version here. And a cute jogger style that I think is better for hikes that involve climbing, less expensive version here.

• Pack or wear this lightweight fleece that isn’t too bulky and has a great flattering fit. And of course add a nice bandana, cute baseball hat and backpack - et voila.

• Plenty of West Coast hikes can be done in a good pair of sneakers, but if you’re tackling serious mountain terrain, you’ll want proper (and cute) hiking shoes (major sale) or chic but sturdy boots (or these too) and don’t underestimate the importance of quality hiking socks. Your feet will thank you.

• I also included a chic lounge set because, much like a ski trip, the day doesn’t end when you get off the trail. After a hot shower, you’ll likely be hanging out with friends and family, enjoying a well-earned meal (and hopefully a glass of wine). There’s no reason you can’t be incredibly comfortable and chic while you do it.

• Had to include these two skincare products that came with me to the ADKs because hiking can feel a little rough on your skin. Mrs Derm introduced me to this UK brand with a cultlike following and I have to say these products deliver snd my skin looks noticeably better after I apply (just read the reviews).

• LKO Bonus: I found this cute poncho style rain coat that packs into a little square pouch which makes it ideal for backpacks and air travel plus I think it would be equally chic in the city as I do on the trails - especially in the camel color!

Moving on to some travel ideas…

Chic Hotels for Chic Hikers

I do have to confess something here: I am not a camper. I’ve fully accepted that about myself. You won’t find me hauling camping gear into the wilderness and I’m perfectly okay with that. Give me a beautiful hike, a charming hotel, a hot shower (or bath!), and a great dinner afterward, and I’m in heaven.

The French Alps, anyone? Or the Dolomites? There are also some amazing hut to hut or inn to inn options throughout Europe from Switzerland to Spain to the Cotswalds to so many more. Or the many breathtaking trails right here in the U.S. from the Adirondack Mountains to the Red Rocks of Sedona, two places we have been lucky enough to hike in.

Some hotel ideas here…

• The Lake Placid Lodge - we stayed here for one of our anniversaries (when we lived there!) and it was amazing. I still remember climbing into a tub just like the one pictured above after a long hike with a glass of bubbly. Heaven!

• The L’Auberge De Sedona - we hiked, we biked (that was actually a nightmare, they sent us on advanced trails and it was more like bolder jumping lol) we rode ATVs through the Red Rocks and we stayed at this incredibly beautiful hotel. One I still would love to return to. Explore their website, it’s a good one.

• Les Fermes de Marie - I certainly can’t miss another reason to plug my favorite hotel. A cool thing about Megeve is you can take one of their many chairlifts up to various starting points for hikes and immediately start enjoying breathtaking views and scenery. They even keep open some of their ski huts in the summer - so you can dine al fresco while listening to the cow bells ringing!

• Here’s an Indagare pick for the Dolomites that is pretty reasonably priced and looks super cool. Never been there but it’s on my list! Skiing or hiking.

The bottom line is I love being outside. I love exploring, especially on a sunny day with plenty of fresh air. And, as I’ve shared before, there’s something incredibly satisfying about spending the day moving your body - sometimes to the point of complete exhaustion - before taking a hot shower and sitting down to what somehow becomes one of the best meals of your life. The food tastes better, the wine tastes better, and you appreciate every single bite just a little more. And boy does your bed feel good.

Because honestly, how much shopping and lounging can a girl do on vacation? Of course plenty but give me a little bit of everything else too!

46 Peaks to Paris

Talking about hiking reminded me of a family challenge we started years ago and one I’m still hoping to complete some day…

When the girls were younger, I made them a deal: hike all 46 Adirondack High Peaks with me, and I’ll take them to Paris. Needless to say...we’re still working toward that trip. We made it to 32 peaks before moving from Lake Placid, and that’s where our tally has been sitting ever since.

Back story: When Dick and I chose to raise our family in the Adirondacks, we wanted our lives to revolve around the outdoors. Winter was easy - we all loved to ski. Hiking, however, took a little (or a lot) more encouragement, so I came up with the Paris incentive! It motivated me too! hah

Some of our days on the mountain lasted 12 to 15 hours, and those adventures have become the stories we still laugh about to this day. There were blisters, meltdowns, wrong turns, endless snacks, and plenty of “are we there yet?” moments - but there was also so many great conversations (no phones!) and an incredible sense of accomplishment every single time we reached the summit (or better yet, got back to our car) Once Joan literally burst into tears at the sight of our car!

If you want to raise resilient kids, take them hiking. They’ll learn that they’re tougher than they think and that the best views almost always require a little effort to get there.

Let’s kick things off with what I’ve been eyeing….

I have a little medley of pieces I’ve been mulling over lately that I think are perfect for the summer-to-fall transition which will be here before we all know it…

I’m seeing olive everywhere right now, and I have to say I love it in the cargo-style pants. I bought that style in white for summer and love them so much I want another pair. This brand looks very similar and they have this cute olive color for considerably less. And they’re just as cute with a simple white tee or tank and sandals for summer as they are with a French blue blouse (on sale) and a fall Mary Jane. This slouchy style pant also looks equally chic with a heel and dressier blouse for a night out. And they are SO comfortable!

I’d also add a chic canvas Rue de Verneuil bag (plenty currently on major sale so don’t wait!) for summer, then swap in a chic smaller suede bag for fall. This bag actually reminds me of a Veronica Beard style I love (for less $$). I’m also obsessed with this chunky red sweater (love that it’s one size). It would look gorgeous with white jeans right now, and then with a darker denim once the temperatures start to dip. Here’s a cute one for less that gives a similar vibe.

Speaking of denim, this jean style is a major best seller, and I’m thinking I need to give it a try. I love the fit in the photos, and the entire outfit is exactly the kind of look I gravitate toward. While that is more of a fall look, I think that style jean would look equally chic with a white blouse and Canfora sandals for summer. A perfect jean is indispensable so spend the time (and money) getting yours.

And finally, I love this little “party pant” that isn’t too loud or too summery that I think would also transition nicely into September (these are also super cute). I can picture them with a tank and some Canforas now and a lightweight cotton turtleneck and loafers for those first cooler fall days.

Summering

OK. I made the world’s easiest dinner more by accident than intention - and it was so delicious and perfect.

It all started with grilling some farm-fresh zucchini because I was planning to make a zucchini pasta (a recipe my friend Jenny sent me). But then I started pulling out everything I had in our kitchen for some noshing…ripe tomatoes, basil, cucumber, peaches, creamy burrata, a few local cheeses, cherries, and sourdough from a few days ago that I pan fried with a little olive oil (remember this technique whenever your bread is a day or two old, it’s so delicious).

We just added the grilled zucchini to the assortment and ditched the pasta idea and it was honestly the perfect summer meal. And yes, I was so grateful for the sweet summer peaches my sis brought up from Saratoga (with the burrata after reading my Tuesday edit!) everything else was from our local farms here in the Adks and it was all A+

Highly recommend giving this a try while the produce is at its peak. Pour yourself a glass of rosé and pretend you’re in the South of France (or, better yet, just enjoy where you are!)

I recently read that what you do when you’re alone says more about your sense of style than what you do when company is over. I loved that thought. Even if it’s dinner for one, you can still set a beautiful table, light the candles, use the good china, slip into something chic and comfy (see LKO tip below!) and pour yourself something lovely. Maybe your only company is a great book. Honestly, that sounds pretty nice, right?

So with that in mind, I started thinking about other little ways we can bring more beauty and chicness into our everyday lives.

And where better to begin than with the ever-elusive, always-essential, and frequently discussed here at The LKO Edit…perfect white shirt (round-up here) Whether dressed up or down, it’s the hardest-working piece in your wardrobe - and the one you’ll reach for again and again. And yes, you need more than one.

A crisp white shirt (or French blue) with a casual sequin skirt and flat sandals…how chic and how French?? The colors and fabrics are gorgeous, but what really sets them apart is the fit. The top is oversized in the right way and the short is a little more tailored, giving them a cool, effortless look instead of veering into dorky territory.

AND. What I’m especially drawn to are their personalization options, like the details on the cuff. It’s such a chic way to make a wardrobe staple feel uniquely yours.

It also got me thinking about all of the beautiful shirts you may already have hanging in your closet. Why not give one a custom touch? I know many of you have a go-to monogram person (maybe someone who does your pillow shams or towels), but if not, they’re usually not too hard to find. It seems like every town has that little embroidery or monogram shop tucked away somewhere.

I love the idea of adding a monogram - or even a favorite word or phrase - in an unexpected place, like the “LOVE YOU” stitched onto the blue shirt above. It’s such a chic, playful detail that makes a classic piece feel cooler. I’ve also seen moms embroider their children’s names or initials in more of a subtle way, which is such a sweet and personal touch.

It had me at the cover - a villa in Italy. Yes, please! I started it simply feeling pleasantly entertained, but by the final pages I was completely engrossed and genuinely sad to have it come to an end. Highly recommend!

And finally. Who wants to join me in trying these Cann Spritzes? From what I understand, one bottle makes about 17 drinks, so the price actually seems pretty reasonable. And the reviews are pretty solid. I just ordered it so stay tuned!

As I’ve been sharing, I’ve really been enjoying their little blood orange packets mixed into seltzer. Seeing all the vacation posts from this past holiday weekend got me thinking about vacations back in the day (as old people say). I come from a time when photos had to be developed.

I know film cameras are making a comeback, and I love that...although these days they’re usually sitting right alongside the phone.

Years ago, you’d take a few pictures - of the view and/or the people you were with - and then you’d put the camera away and pretty much forget about it. You didn’t take fifteen shots of the same thing (you paid for every picture!) And you didn’t photograph every single thing you ate, did or wore. And you didn’t have anywhere to post them.

Weeks later, you’d pick up those developed photos and be reminded of that time and place (and maybe show some family or friends). The pictures didn’t interrupt the memories. They brought them back.

These days, we’re looking at the pictures while we’re still in the moment. And in some ways, that’s pretty cool. But in other ways...maybe not.

I recently read a travel article where the writer suggested putting away your phone and just enjoying where you are. While I’ll admit that’s not exactly groundbreaking advice, it made me realize something: it’s not the camera that’s the issue, it’s the phone.

Because the phone is connected to so much more. The picture is only part of it. There’s the posting. The caption. The comments. The whole experience suddenly becomes about something else. And for someone else. Sometimes it feels less like capturing moments from a wonderful vacation and more like collecting proof that we’re having one. And it can take away from the enjoyment of your vacation if you let it. Ever wonder if influencers actually have fun on their trips? lol

The second I decide I need to take a picture, something shifts. I’m fixing my hair. Looking for better light. Finding the right angle (or asking my girls to) Wondering if we should take one - or ten - more. Already looking through the pictures and wondering what would be a good post. And, if I’m being honest, it’s all pretty annoying. Somewhere along the way, I’ve stepped outside - or actually interrupted - the very moment I was trying to capture.

So I know the takeaway isn’t to stop taking pictures. Although maybe I should just go back to using a camera?? Or at least pretend I have to pay for every photo I take. That alone would probably cut my camera roll in half.

Maybe that’s part of the problem. I often take terrible photos but I think it’s because I don’t really stop and focus - I just keep snapping. Maybe the answer is fewer pictures...and better ones. Quality over quantity.

I think it’s as simple as getting the shot and going back to enjoying the moment as soon as possible. My girls are better at this than me. So yes, this reflection is more for me than them. But maybe someone else out there needed to read this today.

Because at the end of the day, the best part of any vacation (or time together) is never the perfect photo. It’s the moment itself.

I couldn’t resist sharing this truly gorgeous Carolina Herrera dress. It’s probably not the most flattering silhouette for some of us, but it’s just too beautiful not to appreciate…sigh.

And, speaking of runway dresses…who else is dying to see Taylor Swift’s wedding dress?? I’m especially intrigued by the rumor that it was designed by Christian Dior’s Jonathan Anderson. As you may remember, we featured him here at Edit not that long ago. He struck me as just so low-key and unpretentious, and has a reputation for chasing down every opportunity. So if this rumor is true, clearly he nabbed the opportunity of a lifetime.

And, if I’m being honest (always), I’ve never really considered Taylor Swift a fashion icon. Concert costumes are in a category all their own, but when it comes to her everyday or red carpet style, I don’t usually find her looks particularly chic or memorable.

That said...I have a feeling this will be different. I can’t imagine not loving whatever Jonathan Anderson created for her. Stay tuned.

OK. Now, back to reality...starting with some 🇺🇸 throwbacks to when the girls were little, fully embracing their all-American style.

I’ve decided the 4th is for the kids…I’m seeing far too many shots rolling around on instagram of so many adorable kids in adorable outfits. Add ice cream and fireworks and well, it all kind of makes sense.

In fact I would normally either be lakeside or beachside - or wishing I was. While at the same time often dreaming of places like this…

Above are three photos and yes, I realize they all seem to involve food…

• The first is from one of my favorite places, Les Fermes de Marie in the French Alps, where I’ve been lucky enough to stay (I’ll never stop recommending it) The photo was taken from the deck of one of their mountain huts, which you can hike to for lunch.

• The second is Auberge de la Maison in Courmayeur, Italy, a hotel I’ve been dreaming about for years. I’m hoping to finally make it there, whether in the summer for hiking or in the winter for skiing. I like an activity on vacation, followed by good food and wine - and perhaps a spa treatment :) There’s something about feeling like you earned it.

• The last photo is of Victoria and her friends in London enjoying dinner al fresco recently, making the best of the European heat wave (which has thankfully finally broken).

I came across a quote on Instagram recently and immediately thought of her. It made me appreciate even more what she - and so many of her new friends - have done. Leaving home, starting over, and creating a community from scratch. It takes courage.

We’re so proud of Vivi and the adventurous group of friends she’s found along the way. If you, or anyone you know, is thinking about doing something like this all I can say is: 100% YES. Go for it. I wish I did!

Can’t have enough white tops. Really like the details on this chic shirt…so pretty and looks comfortable. It’s from an L.A. brand that lots of cool girls love so I’m giving it a whirl because it’s on sale.

Alex Mill is having a major sale, and it’s a good one. As I’ve shared before, I’ve been to their store, and the quality really is exceptional.

The striped sweater above was $188 and is now just $59 (yes...I ordered it). Their ballet flats are half price in select colors - including the adorable orange pair pictured. And remember, an oversized men’s crewneck is very The Row…I’m especially partial to this red one (tip: buy it for your husband and then take it)

There are also fantastic markdowns on tanks ($24 from $78), skirts, stripe pajamas, and so many other wardrobe staples. And I am loving this little woven handbag - it’s also half price and comes in red and ivory. Run, don’t walk.

Beauty

I have this ice roller from Skinny Confidential and I have to say it’s pretty addictive.

I remember back in my Beautycounter days our beauty guru (Christy Coleman) said the best way to look fabulous - and picture ready - before an event is to stick your face in a bowl of ice. Why? An ice bath triggers vasoconstriction - instantly shrinking blood vessels. This rapid physical response depuffs swollen under-eyes, calms redness, tightens pores, and preps your skin for a smoother makeup application.

This ice roller does pretty much the same thing - only it’s way easier.

LKO Tip: Equally amazing the morning after any big event - especially if there are any headaches involved ;) O’Leary girls have been known to run to the freezer to try and grab it first!

24 hours in the Hamptons

Joan and I managed to sneak away midweek for two nights at our close friends' house (pictured above), and honestly, I think it’s the perfect reminder that you don't need a long vacation to feel completely transported.

Everything seemed to fall into place - we even lucked out with the best weather of the week. We savored every moment: walking the neighborhood admiring the beautiful homes (and hedges!), browsing the shops, and spending the day at the beach. We all even went into the ocean, which is really saying something! The day ended with rosé on their picture perfect porch, followed by lobster rolls at a dockside restaurant on the water. It was truly a 10 out of 10, and somehow we came home feeling as though we’d had a full vacation. Highly recommend booking that short getaway (ideally midweek).

Recipes

All O’Leary girls are making this orzo salad this week. I was reminded of it recently and sent it out in the group chat…it’s an old Ina recipe that my sister-in-law Deanna and I made on repeat for years. It’s so good and can be eaten warm or cold and is just the perfect accompaniment for chicken or grilled meat. LKO Tip: would make a great dish to bring to a 4th of July BBQ.

His work spans decades and includes some of the most spectacular private homes you’ll ever see to more public places like rooms at the White House.

I recently came across a beautiful room that stopped me in my tracks and made me wonder about the people who lived there. As you know, I love all things style, and I've always thought our homes and wardrobes are more connected than we realize - they often tell the same story. So I had a little fun imagining a classic summer day, complete with the people and style choices inspired by this room.

Now, on to all things red, white, and blue...

This room is the quintessential American summer living room. Truly perfection. It feels like something straight out of a Ralph Lauren campaign - equal parts timeless, chic, cozy and aspirational.

So I thought it would be fun to imagine a day behind the picture...

An All-American Summer Day

The day begins with pajamas and coffee. The adults already on their second cup while the kids dive into homemade scones with homemade whipped cream and fresh berries from the local farm stand (obviously there’s one nearby). Technically the berries make it healthy. The house smells incredible, and because the morning is still cool, there’s a fire crackling in the fireplace.

What they’re wearing…Petite Plume pjs for the babies and kids…and the cutest blue and white stripe short set for mom (that are on serious sale right now). Everyone lingers and relishes the yummy scones and cozy fire. The dog is busy with the crumbs.

To the Beach We Go

By mid-morning, the temperature has climbed and everyone is ready for the beach. The kids are slathered in sunscreen and ready for some fun in the sun…

Mom in a blue and white check suit, red sarong and a slouchy navy beach hat. Kids in the cutest bathing suits from Minnow. Mags and sunnies and toys packed.

The Picnic

Nothing complicated…just the things that somehow taste better when eaten on the beach. Fresh mozzarella, summer tomatoes, fresh basil with olive oil & balsamic vinegar on Italian bread, with potato chips, and ice cold lemonades - packed in our favorite cooler. Simple and delicious.

Golden Hour Begins

Back at the house, everyone takes outdoor showers while trying (and failing) to keep sand from coming inside. The kids run barefoot through the yard.

The adults settle onto the deck. Rosé for mom. An ice-cold beer for dad. More lemonade for the kids. No one is in a hurry. No one is checking the time or on their phone. Summer is doing exactly what summer is supposed to do.

No Cooking Tonight

Dinner is someone else’s problem. Freshly showered and sun-kissed, we pull on our summer favorites and bike into town. The destination? A casual waterfront spot for lobster club sandwiches and more potato chips (and wine). Followed by ice cream, of course.

What they’re wearing…checkered bubbles for the little ones, polos for the boys and a nap dress (on sale) for mom with maybe a stripe Breton top or cosy crew (chic brand having major sale) on her shoulders…and a pop of red with some Canfora sandals. Easy, breezy and chic.

The Best Part of the Day

Back home the kids happily climb into their crisp white sheets with their favorite books. The adults do the same. This gorgeous bedding is still on major sale and just exudes chic nautical style. It’s the kind of day that makes you wish summer could last forever.

I hope you enjoyed this little summer dream, and I hope it inspires you to carve out your own version of summer happiness. It's such a special time of year, and it's worth taking a moment to truly enjoy it before it slips away.
