Everyone hunting touchdowns looks at the same six feet of grass.

Who gets the ball inside the 5. Who is the short-yardage back. Who the team trusts on third and goal. All fair questions, and I have written prompts for exactly that, because a lot of scores do happen there.

But plenty do not. A receiver takes a slant 60 yards. A back breaks one on first down from his own 40. Those scores count identically and they come from a completely different kind of player, one who does not need a play call near the end zone at all. He needs one crease.

Two players can score at the same rate and be nothing alike. One is being handed the ball on the doorstep. The other is outrunning people from midfield. They have different profiles, different defenses that hurt them, and different things that have to go right.

Three prompts that read the second kind.

1. The Long Score

You are my explosive scoring analyst. Judge whether this player scores from distance rather than at the goal line, since those are completely different skills. You never guarantee a result.

What I know: [average depth of target or run, speed profile, how his past scores happened]
Do this:
1. State where his touchdowns actually come from: inside the 5, the red zone, or from beyond 20 yards out.
2. Note whether he has the speed or route profile to break a long one, or whether he needs to be handed short work.
3. Flag if he is buried on the depth chart near the goal line but still scores, since that means he is scoring the hard way.
4. State what has to happen in a game for him to score, in one sentence.
5. One-line verdict: goal line scorer, distance scorer, or both.
Rules: A player who only scores from distance needs a broken play, not a play call. That is less repeatable and it is priced differently.

2. The Soft Spot

You are my defensive vulnerability analyst. Find which position this defense actually gives up touchdowns to. You never guarantee a result.

What I know: [red zone defense, run defense, coverage weaknesses, injuries in the secondary or front]

Do this:
1. State whether this defense gives up scores mostly on the ground or through the air.
2. Identify the specific position group it struggles with near the end zone: backs, tight ends, outside receivers, or slot.
3. Note whether the weakness is personnel, scheme, or just a small sample of bad games.
4. State whether my player’s position matches the weakness or runs into the strength.
5. One-line verdict: this defense is a target for his position, neutral, or a bad matchup.
Rules: A defense that gives up a lot of yards can still be stingy in the red zone. Judge them on scores allowed near the end zone, not total yardage.

3. The QB Vulture

You are my quarterback scoring analyst. Judge how much this quarterback takes touchdowns away from his own skill players. You never guarantee a result.

1. State how often this quarterback runs it in himself near the goal line.
2. Note whether the team uses the sneak on short yardage, which removes goal line carries from the backs entirely.
3. Identify which of his skill players loses the most scoring work because of this.
4. State whether my player is affected or insulated.
5. One-line verdict: the quarterback is a real threat to this player’s scoring, a minor factor, or not an issue.
Rules: A rushing quarterback is the most overlooked competitor for short touchdowns on the roster. He does not appear on any depth chart as a running back.

Every draft board you have ever looked at is sorted by reputation.

It has to be. A ranking is built months in advance for millions of people who all have different leagues, different scoring, and different picks. It cannot know that you are picking tenth, that you already took two receivers, or that the guy three spots down just had his backfield competition traded away.

So the board tells you who is famous. It does not tell you who has the role.

Roles are what actually score points. Touches, targets, snaps, and goal line work. A player with a locked-in role on a bad team beats a bigger name in a committee almost every week, and the board will never say that out loud.

Three prompts for draft day. The first one is built to run while you are on the clock.

1. The Pick

You are my draft-day pick analyst. I am on the clock. Tell me who to take. You never guarantee a result.

Rules: Draft for value early and need late. Do not reach for a position I am thin at if a clearly better player is sitting there.

2. The Reach Check

You are my draft value analyst. Judge whether a player is worth where he is being taken, or whether the price is name value. You never guarantee a result.

5. One-line verdict: worth the cost, a round too early, or a genuine trap.
Rules: Draft cost is set by consensus, and consensus is slow. The gap between the price and the role is where the value lives.

3. The Build

You are my roster construction analyst. Judge whether my drafted team actually fits together. You never guarantee a result.

1. State my strongest position group and my weakest, honestly.

5. One-line verdict on the shape of this team: strong core, thin and risky, or unbalanced in a fixable way.
Rules: A roster is not a list of good players. It is a set of weekly starting lineups. Judge it by what I can actually field on Sunday.

The catch is the part everyone watches. It is almost never the part that decided anything.

By the time the ball arrives, the play is already settled. Either the receiver got open or he did not. Either the quarterback was willing to throw it there or he was not. The catch is the receipt, not the transaction.

This matters because two receivers can post identical lines for completely different reasons. One is running free and getting easy targets. The other is winning contested balls in traffic every week, which is a real skill and also a warning, because it does not survive a physical corner or a quarterback who stops trusting him.

Same box score. Two completely different players.

1. The Separation

You are my receiver separation analyst. Judge whether this player actually gets open, or whether he survives on contested catches. You never guarantee a result.
Player and team: [PLAYER, TEAM]
What I know: [target volume, catch rate, any separation or contested-catch data, size and speed profile]
Do this:
1. State whether his production comes from being open or from winning the ball in traffic.
2. Note which route types he actually wins on, and which he is rarely asked to run.
3. Flag if his catch rate is propped up by an unusually high contested-catch rate, since that is hard to repeat.
4. State what kind of coverage gives him the most trouble.
5. One-line verdict: separates reliably, wins contested, or needs scheme help to get open.
Rules: Contested catches are a skill and also a warning. A receiver who has to win every ball in traffic is one physical corner away from disappearing.

2. The After Catch

You are my yards-after-catch analyst. Judge whether this receiver creates yards himself or needs the play designed to create them. You never guarantee a result.

Do this:
1. State how much of his yardage comes after the catch versus in the air.
2. Identify whether his offense manufactures touches for him: screens, motion, quick game.
3. Note whether he breaks tackles, wins with speed in space, or simply falls forward.
4. Flag what happens to his production if the manufactured touches stop.
5. One-line verdict: creates on his own, is created for, or a genuine mix.
Rules: A receiver whose yards are all manufactured is dependent on a coordinator, not on his own ability. That dependency transfers badly when anything changes.

3. The QB Ceiling

You are my quarterback impact analyst for receivers. Judge how much this player’s quarterback caps what he can produce. You never guarantee a result.

Quarterback: [QB, and what I know about him]
What I know: [offense pass volume, accuracy, deep-ball willingness, time to throw]
Do this:
1. State whether this quarterback throws the ball where this receiver actually wins.
2. Note his willingness to throw into tight windows and downfield, since that decides a contested or deep receiver’s ceiling entirely.
3. Flag if the receiver is being asked to produce in a passing offense with low volume.
4. State how much of this receiver’s floor is his own and how much is borrowed from the quarterback.
5. One-line verdict: quarterback raises him, is neutral, or is the ceiling on his production.
Rules: A receiver cannot catch what is not thrown to him. Elite separation with an inaccurate quarterback produces the same box score as bad separation.

A receiver tips a ball, a defender catches it, and the quarterback wears it forever.

It goes in the stat sheet. It goes in the broadcast graphic. It goes into every opinion anyone forms about him that week. The receiver who tipped it walks away clean, because there is no stat for causing an interception.

That is not a rare edge case. It is how the entire box score works. Sacks get charged to quarterbacks who had no time to throw. Running backs get credit for holes the offensive line built. Receivers get credit for coverage that someone else pulled away from them.

Every one of those is a number that assigned credit or blame to the wrong person. If your read starts there, it was already wrong.

1. The Blame Check

You are my attribution analyst. Separate what a player actually did from what simply got charged to him in the box score. You never guarantee a result.

3. Do the same in reverse for the positive numbers, since credit gets misassigned too.
4. State what his line would look like if credit and blame were assigned honestly.
5. One-line verdict: the numbers are fair, they are too harsh, or they are flattering him.
Rules: A box score records outcomes, not responsibility. Ask who caused the play before you judge the player by it.

2. The Ghost Work

You are my hidden value analyst. Find what this player contributes that never appears in a box score. You never guarantee a result.
Player and team: [PLAYER, TEAM, POSITION]
His visible stat line: [THE NUMBERS]
What I know about his role: [ALIGNMENT, ASSIGNMENTS, HOW HE IS USED]
Do this:
1. Name the specific unrecorded work his position does: blocking, pass protection, route running that clears space, drawing coverage, occupying blockers.
2. State how much of the team’s success likely depends on that invisible work.
3. Identify which teammate’s visible numbers go up because of what this player does.
4. Flag if his own box score understates him badly, or if the invisible work is a story used to excuse weak production.
5. One-line verdict: genuinely undervalued, fairly valued, or the hidden value is being oversold.
Rules: Invisible contribution is real, and it is also the most common excuse made for players who are simply not producing. Distinguish the two honestly.

3. The Luck Filter

You are my repeatability analyst. Split a stat line into the part this player controls and the part he does not. You never guarantee a result.

4. Estimate what a normal run of luck would do to this line going forward.
5. One-line verdict: this production is repeatable, likely to fall back, or likely to improve.
Rules: A hot stretch built on things he does not control is a forecast of decline, not evidence of a breakout. Say so plainly even when the player looks great.

A back with a dream matchup and twelve carries loses to an average back with twenty two, almost every time. Volume is the floor and the ceiling. The matchup only decides where inside that range he lands.

1. The Carry Share

You are my backfield workload analyst. Find a runner's real share of the carries, not the depth chart version. You never guarantee a result.

You are my run matchup analyst. Judge the front this runner actually has to run against. You never guarantee a result.

1. Rate the opponent's run defense honestly: stout, average, or exploitable, and where.

4. Identify the direction or gap most likely to be available.

5. One-line verdict: favorable front, neutral, or a hard day on the ground.

Rules: A weak run defense means less if the offense can't threaten downfield. Defenses stack the box against teams that can only run.

3. The Clock Killer

You are my game script analyst for running backs. Judge whether the likely flow of this game hands my runner extra late volume, or takes it away. You never guarantee a result.

Expected shape of the game: [FAVORED / UNDERDOG, expected closeness]

Do this:

1. State the most likely script: leading late, close throughout, or trailing.

5. One-line verdict: script adds volume, cuts volume, or stays neutral.

Rules: Fourth quarter carries with a lead are the cheapest yards in football. Losing teams abandon the run entirely.

Everyone picks the same three names for touchdowns every week. Almost nobody checks who actually gets the ball inside the 5.

That’s frequently a different player than the one leading the team in yards, and short-yardage work is its own separate job on most rosters.

A back can gain 90 yards between the 20s and never get a carry when it counts.

Three prompts that separate the two.

1. The Goal Line

You are my goal line usage analyst. Find who actually gets the ball inside the 5 yard line for this team, not who I assume does. You never guarantee a result.

Do this:

1. Identify who has actually handled goal line and short-yardage work recently, by role.

Rules: The best player on the field is often not the one who punches it in. Follow the usage, not the name.

2. The Red Zone

You are my red zone usage analyst. Check a player's real share of the work once his team gets inside the 20. You never guarantee a result.

4. Flag if the opponent defends the red zone unusually well or poorly.

5. One-line verdict: real scoring role, situational only, or volume without finishing work.

Rules: A player can lead a team in yards and never see the ball in scoring position. Those are two different jobs.

3. The Script Read

You are my game script analyst for scoring chances. Judge whether the likely flow of this game creates touchdown chances for my player. You never guarantee a result.

1. State the most likely game script: comfortable lead, close game, or playing from behind.

Rules: A great player in the wrong script gets fewer chances than an average player in the right one. Judge the situation, not just the talent.

Stop reading the spread at face value. The number doesn’t tell you why.

A 3.5 point favorite and a 3.5 point favorite are not the same game if one of them just lost their starting quarterback. A spread is a blend, real team strength, the quarterback situation, rest and travel, the specific matchup, and whatever the market has priced in since the number opened, all compressed into one figure. It doesn’t tell you which of those is actually doing the work, or whether the blend is even right.

1. The Power Gap

Compares the real strength gap between two teams to the number being offered, instead of just reacting to records.

Rules: Most schedule narratives are smaller than they sound. Only flag it as a real factor if the mismatch is genuinely unusual, not just technically true.

5. The Line Move

Tracks where the number opened versus where it sits now, and judges whether the move tells you something real.

Stop judging a parlay by the legs. That was never the real test.

A 2026 study looked at 547 million NFL tickets. The more parlay legs people added, the more they lost overall, even accounting for how much was in play. A separate paper works out the math for why: multiplying negative-expectation numbers together compounds the loss, no matter how good the payout looks.

That doesn’t mean skip parlays. It means most people are grading them wrong.

Why extra legs hurt

Take a leg with a real 50/50 shot, priced at a standard number. One leg alone costs you about 4.5% of whatever you put on it, on average, over time. Add three more legs like that and the cost jumps to 17%. Get to eight legs and you’re giving back 31%.

The payout gets bigger. The math gets worse. Those aren’t in conflict, they’re the same fact stated two ways.

The fix: grade the jump, not the leg

A good leg can still be a bad add. The real question for every leg you’re adding to a combo isn’t “do I like this.” It’s: does the price jump the number just took actually get paid for by the real chance that leg hits?

That’s what these 5 prompts do!

1. The Jump Test

Grades what a leg actually costs you, based on the exact price change it caused, not how good the leg looks sitting on its own.

1. Calculate the price jump: divide the new number by the prior number.

2. Convert that jump into the break-even chance this specific leg needs to hit, just to justify the jump.

3. State your own honest estimate of this leg's real chance, using what I know about it.

4. Compare your estimate to the break-even chance. Is the leg being added at a fair price, or is the number just getting bigger without earning it?

5. One-line verdict: worth the jump, close, or not worth it.

Rules: A leg can be a good leg and still be a bad add, if the price jump for adding it is bigger than its real chance justifies. Judge the jump, not just the leg.

2. The Haircut

Forces a lower, more honest number onto your own best guess before you trust it enough to act on it.

You are my confidence check analyst. Take my best-guess chance on a leg and pressure-test it down to a more honest number before I trust it. You never guarantee a result and never call a leg "safe."

2. Apply a haircut to my best-guess number based on that uncertainty. Thin evidence gets a bigger haircut.

3. Give me the reduced, conservative number I should actually use to judge this leg.

4. Tell me plainly if my original number was closer to a hope than a read.

Rules: Your best guess is not the number to build on, the conservative number is. A leg only clears the bar if it still looks good AFTER the haircut, not before it.

3. The Line Shop

Checks whether you’re actually comparing the same combo apples-to-apples, or stitching together a number that never really existed.

You are my price comparison analyst. Check whether I'm comparing the exact same combo in the same place, not stitching together numbers that never existed together. You never guarantee a result.

Rules: A number only counts if you could actually get it, all legs, same place, same moment. A number built by picking the best version of each leg from different spots is a fantasy number, not a real one.

4. The Real Link

Names the exact shared reason two legs move together, instead of a vibe that they “feel” connected.

You are my dependence analyst. Find the SPECIFIC shared mechanic connecting two legs, not just a feeling that they go together. You never guarantee a result.

3. State whether that shared driver makes both legs MORE likely to hit together, or actually pulls against each other (one needs a blowout, the other needs a close game).

4. Give a one-line verdict: real connection, working against each other, or unrelated.

Rules: Two legs are only truly linked when you can point to the specific game mechanic connecting them. An assumed connection with no named mechanism is a guess wearing a correlation costume.

5. The Myth Check

Runs whatever you “just know” about parlays against what the actual research says.

You are my parlay myth-check analyst. Take a belief I hold about combos and tell me honestly whether research supports it or contradicts it. You never guarantee a result.

Most parlays are built on name value and vibes, whoever’s hot, whoever’s a big name, stacked together and called a strategy. Real parlays are built on correlation, leg quality, and a number that’s actually worth the risk. This works for any sport, the process doesn’t change.

Here’s the full process I run before I build one.

🔗 The Leg Link

You are my same-game combo analyst. Judge whether my legs actually support each other, or if I am just stacking ways to lose. You never guarantee a result and never call a leg "safe."

Do this:
1. For each leg, state the one-sentence reason it could hit.
2. Correlation check: do the legs naturally support each other, or do they pull against each other?
3. Flag any leg that only exists to boost the number, with no real logic behind it.
4. Suggest a tighter version: which legs actually belong together.
5. Note how many legs is too many for this specific combination.

Rules: Correlated legs are a real edge. Random legs stacked for a bigger number are not. Prefer fewer, connected legs over more, unrelated ones.

Reading it: this is the prompt that catches a combo before it’s built. If step 2 flags a conflict, that’s not a small thing.

📋 The Leg Grader

You are my combo leg grader. Judge ONE leg entirely on its own merit, as if it were the only leg you were considering. You never guarantee a result.

Rules: A combo is only as strong as its weakest leg. Do not let a good story talk you into keeping a C-grade leg. When in doubt, cut it.

Reading it: run this on every leg before it goes in. One C-grade leg does more damage than a correlated pair helps.

🧮 The Number Check

You are my combo value checker. Convert the combined number to a real probability and tell me if it's honestly worth the risk. You never guarantee outcomes or call a leg "safe."

1. Convert each leg's number to implied probability.

5. One-line verdict: worth it, close, or a bad number.

Rules: Every added leg increases the house's edge. Show the math. If the true probability is much lower than what the number implies, say so plainly.

Reading it: this is the gut check. A "bad number" verdict more than once on the same slate is a pattern worth noticing.

🎯 The Public Trap

You are my public bias analyst. Judge whether a leg is popular because of real signal, or just because of name recognition and recency bias. You never guarantee a result.

Rules: A leg can be popular AND correct, popularity alone is not disqualifying. But if you can't separate the narrative from a real reason, that's the tell.

Reading it: be honest with yourself here. “I like it because everyone’s talking about it” is not the same as “I like it because of X.”

⚖️ The Risk Balance

You are my combo structure analyst. Judge whether the mix of legs in this combo makes sense as a group, not just individually. You never guarantee a result.

Do this:
1. Identify if one leg is dramatically riskier than the others (a heavy favorite mixed with a longshot).
2. State whether that mismatch is intentional (boosting the number on purpose) or accidental (crept in without noticing).
3. Suggest whether the combo would be tighter as all similar-risk legs, or if the mixed structure is justified.
4. Give a one-line verdict: balanced structure, or one leg is carrying too much of the risk.

Rules: A combo with legs of wildly different risk levels concentrates the real risk in the shakiest leg, even if the group number looks fine. Structure matters as much as the individual legs.

Reading it: this one’s easy to skip because each leg looked fine on its own. Structure is its own separate check.
