So please bear with me.

A few weeks ago, in reaction to the illicit alcohol conversation and the rifts that conversation revealed between Rwandans below 30 and those comfortably above it, I wrote:

“Those below 30, of a certain ilk, believe that the ‘Uncs and Aunties’ running the different facets of Rwandan life are old, out of touch and yearning for a world that simply doesn’t exist—nor has ever existed. They seem to believe that this group is puritanical, hypocritical and drunk on power.

Those above 40 (a group I fall in) believe that young people are culturally adrift, extremely enamoured by the temptations of the world, irresponsibly wasteful of the opportunities that the nation has given them and all too happy to float through life, like a ship without sails.

Narratives are dangerous because they aren’t always the truth.”

I didn’t believe that I’d have to wait only two weeks before contrasting narratives took centre stage in the national conversation.

The newest battlefield? Women’s bodies.

I don’t know how to speak soberly about the horrendous things I’ve witnessed over the past few days.

I’ve seen young women being threatened with beatings by officers of the law at concert venues and being crammed into police pickups while crowds of both men and women bay with excitement, all because they have the temerity to dress in clothes that make them feel happy and comfortable.

I’ve watched disgusting men use social media platforms to justify rape, listened as female journalists minimised the attacks on women’s bodies and heard young men say that women’s rights have gone too far and need to be curtailed.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Kagame’s press conference. The main actors? Local journalist Scovia Mutesi, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and President Paul Kagame himself. The supporting cast? Journalists Albert Rudasimburwa and Oswakim.

It was an unnecessarily long back-and-forth, but I will give you the CliffNotes.

The DRC government stated something on Twitter. Minister Olivier responded on Twitter, saying they were lying and he had the receipts. On a segment of her talk show that was uploaded on Twitter, Scovia said, in jest if we are being honest, that since both sides gave contradictory stories, she didn’t know WHO to believe. The Minister responded on Twitter, Scovia replied, and then the Twitter mob descended to beat her over the head with metaphorical clubs. Why, you ask? For having the temerity to dare question the Minister’s firsthand account of the events that led to the whole brouhaha.

I watched the whole thing bemused because, to be honest, it was the type of quintessential ‘storm in a teacup’ that Rwandan Twitter loves and lives for. But I didn’t pay it any more mind. That is, until the President brought it up, unprovoked, during today’s press conference.

He first asked Scovia to explain what happened and why she apologised to the Minister as a result.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Not because what the Minister had said wasn’t true, but because questioning things wasn’t an issue in and of itself.

Speaking for myself, I’ve personally faced a few challenges (as a writer and podcaster) because I’ve had the gall to ‘question’ things that we deem the ‘orthodoxy’.

To become the Rwanda WE say we want, we need to stop being a society that punishes anyone for simply challenging the information that leaders (or those I call ‘in the know’) give us. I know that is easier said than done. We are often a very docile and easily led lot. But the President’s words should light something in all of us.

For civil servants and public officials: just because they say something doesn’t make it so. They are not infallible just because of their job title. With that in mind, I suggest they learn to explain themselves and not act like they are doing you a favour. I know just how difficult that will be.

For media: don’t be scared of doing your job. Ask for proof and corroborating testimony. You don’t have to be rude; you can ask for evidence politely.

For citizens: keep doing what you are doing. I’ve been extremely pleased by just how enthusiastic and active young people have proved themselves to be online. Whether on Twitter, TikTok or Substack, you guys are doing great.

I won’t lie. I feel extremely vindicated today. MY President has said: ask, question and challenge. Although that in itself is a problem, it shouldnt require the President permission for us to either question those in positions of power or believe systems that some hold dear. Not everything is a sacred cow.

I promise that on MY Substack no sacred cows shall be tolerated!

WATCH THE PRESS CONFERENCE HERE (The back and forth starts at 1:17:54)

Tuma Basa | From Zaire to Jay-Z, Kanye, Burna Boy & the Top of the Music Industry

How does a Rwandan child born in Zaire end up working with some of the biggest names in global music?

Sanny Rwego Ntayombya

How does a Rwandan child born in Zaire end up working with some of the biggest names in global music?

On this episode of The Long Form Podcast, Sanny Ntayombya sits down with legendary music executive Tumaini Basaninyenzi- better known as 'Tuma Basa' whose extraordinary career has taken him from BET and MTV to REVOLT, Spotify and YouTube, where he most recently served as Director of Black Music & Culture.

Tuma shares his journey from Lubumbashi and a Rwandan family to the heart of the American music industry; what he learned from encounters with figures including Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Burna Boy, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Paul Rusesabagina; how artists actually become global superstars; why talent alone isn't enough; and what fame looks like from inside the room.

Sponsors:

ShieldTech Hub- https://www.shieldtechub.com

Akagera Medicines- https://www.akageramedicines.com

BasiGo Rwanda- https://www.basi-go.com/rwanda

CanalBox-https://www.canalbox.rw

Join our Patreon to enjoy ad-free viewing https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheLongFormPod or support us via our MTN Mobile Money Code 95462 or directly to our phone number: +250795462739

Visit Sanny Ntayombya's Official Website: https://sannyntayombya.com

Produced by LF Media

We Might Have to Let the ‘Drunkards’ Out of Prison. ‘Gilbey’s Gin’ and Tanzania’s ‘Konyagi’, has set tongues wagging, not only in Rwanda, but across the entire region. It seems to me that the issue of adulterated alcohol isn’t just a Rwandan crisis; it’s a continental one as well.

In an obvious move to quell the grumbling (largely found on Twitter), Rwanda National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Boniface Rutikanga, revealed in a press conference on 13 August that of assault and battery had almost halved in less than a month.

Thanks for reading The Long View! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

I found that super interesting, so I dug a little further. What I found shocked me.

So, there is supposed to be one main ingredient (compound) in the booze we drink: ethanol. Heavy consumption of the compound can create these symptoms: loss of inhibition, impaired judgement, reduced behavioural control, aggressive behaviour, and mood changes. That happens with just normal, run-of-the-mill overconsumption.

Now, if you want to avoid all these issues and just enjoy the afterglow of a cold cocktail on a hot day, all you have to do is avoid ordering too many drinks.

Here is the problem with adulterated alcohol: the normal rules of ‘engagement’ don’t apply. Because you don’t know what amount of ethanol is in the drink (you can think you are drinking a gin that is ‘only’ 40% alcohol, yet in reality it’s at 55%), the tolerance you believe you have counts for nothing. The ‘normal’ behaviour you tend to exhibit after two drinks could become ‘abnormal’.

If someone ‘spiked’ your drink and, as a result of that poisoning, you, for example, behaved in a manner that was deemed antisocial, you’d be able to argue that those actions weren’t truly yours. Not because you didn’t have a drink, but because the drink was adulterated by someone without your best interests at heart. I would argue that the people who provided these products engaged in ‘spiking’.

It goes further than the manufacturers, though. The bodies that we trusted to ensure that whatever we put into our bodies was safe for consumption (the Rwanda Food and Drug Authority and Rwanda Standards Board) seem to have failed to fulfill their mandates.

So, not only was the alcohol seemingly spiked, but the bodies that should have warned people not to consume those products actually did the opposite. They endorsed them as ‘fit for human consumption’.

Here is the quandary: if someone’s drink is knowingly spiked and, because of that, they act outside the realm of good behaviour, can you say that they are at ‘fault’? Can you say that they are responsible for their actions? I would say no.

Using that logic, if someone is in jail because they engaged in a fight after drinking a liquid that is currently banned in the country, is it just that they are penalised for engaging in illegal actions? I would say not.

If I were a defence lawyer, I would argue that, following new evidence of systemic ‘spiking’ and administrative failure, my client, previously found guilty of whatever crime of passion, should be released from prison due to the lack of mens rea (guilty mind). For a judge to convict someone of a crime, not only do they have to establish actus reus (the physical act), they have to establish the guilty mind as well.

Certain people cannot have a guilty mind: children, the mentally insane…and, in my opinion, someone who has, through no fault of their own, had their brain ‘adulterated’.

Defence lawyers, the ball is in your court.

Get to work!

Thanks for reading The Long View! The Communication University of China-Beijing to be exact. For the very first time, I lived in a country where I didn’t speak the language, didn’t understand the customs and couldn’t read the cues.

When I would sit in a taxi, heading to Sanlitun (a popular shopping district in the Chinese capital), more often than not, the taxi driver would say a few words in Chinese, I would apologetically respond with a few words of English, and then silence would descend. We both spoke, words came out of our mouths, loud and clearly, but because we couldn’t speak the same language, we couldn’t communicate. We spoke past each other, not to each other.

Thanks for reading The Long View! Not because they aren’t sincere in their communication, but because there is a language barrier.

I’d like to tackle this by first sharing some facts, then sharing some narratives.

Here are the facts:

1. There has been an issue of dangerous, fake alcohol in the country. To make matters worse, that dangerous alcohol has been provided to the market at extremely cheap prices. As a result, it has become extremely popular for the least discerning market segment in the country: the young and the poor. As a result, people have become ill, gotten addicted have even died. The Government has acted.

2. Rwanda is currently enjoying something that Koreans and Italians would kill for: a demographic that skews towards the under-30’s and not the over-50’s. The 2022 national census lets us know that 65.3% of our over 13 million citizens are below 30 years of age.

3. There is an overwhelming number of men and women, making decisions at home, in places of worship, in the private sector and the public domain, who are above 40 years of age.

Now that we have gotten the FACTS out of the way, let’s examine some of the NARRATIVES I’ve picked up on.

Those below 30, of a certain ilk, believe that the ‘Uncs and Aunties’ running the different facets of Rwandan life are old, out of touch and yearning for a world that simply doesn’t exist-nor has ever existed. The seem to believe that this group is puritanical, hypocritical and drunk on power.

Those above 40 (a group I comfortably fall in) believe that young people are culturally adrift, extremely enamored by the temptations of the world, irresponsibly wasteful of the opportunities that the nation has given them and all too happy to float through life, like a ship without sails.

Narratives are dangerous because they aren’t always the truth. They are stories we tell to ourselves to help us make sense of what is happening around us.

This is my experience of the tens of young people who I work with on a daily basis, whether at the podcast or at my farm. They are curious. They are respectful. They want the best for themselves and their community. And they are fundamentally good people.

Yes, they have a culture that I sometimes don’t fully understand. But truth be told, I’m not supposed to. What I am supposed to do (sometimes successfully and often unsuccessfully) is not pretend my experience and insight is the end-all and be-all. As an Unc, I see my job as being to probe, listen and, only then, advise.

What I’m seeing today is that my contemporaries are not probing and not listening. They are advising, and when that advice is not heeded, barking orders.

The thing is, I doubt the sustainability of that methodology. All it creates is an unnecessary rift between the generations. Is this rift a necessary price to build the Rwanda we want? I don’t think so. We all fundamentally want the same thing. A community and nation that is thriving and that allows our individual gifts to come through. We must keep our eyes on that truth, that prize, and not fall for narratives about each other that come so easily.

Let’s not pathologize young people. It’s not a winning strategy. They have the numbers-and more importantly, they have time on their hands. They will create the country THEY want. Not the one we WISH for them.

Thanks for reading The Long View!
