your words intoxicated by glasses of liquor

as the meanings turn futile,

and the distance between us multiplies.

But I still remember

the way you looked at me that afternoon -

your skin bathed in sunlight,

shadowed by the wings of those that flutter;

I wish you knew how my heart fluttered for you.

watch as it fleets, how it never lingers,

eager to go, never to stay.

watch how it kisses the flowers,

watch how they bloom,

as they thrive,

how i ache to thrive.

i try to catch it

holding my hands out desperately,

longingly,

lovingly,

but it slips away.

it teases me with its beauty,

flaunting its delicacy

in mockery of my calloused palms.

watch as the heavens above open,

how the stars seem brighter.

Oh, how they gleam in admiration!

They watch as you twirl in moonlight

and they gaze in awe

as venus welcomes you

into the arms of another soul.

Bathed in comfort, you rest your head

on the chest of another;

feel the thrum of your heart

rattle against its cage

as you slip into the world of adoration.

to love me is to suffer me.

protect yourself from the sharp edges

of my shaking fingers,

before you too get stung

by the prick of my anguish;

feel it leak through your clasping palms,

as you turn away from the weight of it all.



i weep for you,

and for the greenery that stings me,

as nature’s beauty

stifles at my touch.



yet you lay down beside me,

your hand in mine,

and as the surrounding thorns 

start to bloom,

the storm inside begins to calm.

i guess its over now.

the needle grits at dead wax

and i ignore it

though i could end this torment

or even start it over,

i leave it

i let it sit;

suffer to silence

as i lay there kneeling,

praying 

save me lord, 

i beg.

for once I long to be the poem,
immortalised in a verse, a ballad, a lyric,
encapsulated by the voice of you.

with your calloused hands stained in ink
as they cup my face in adoration,
brushing against the smooth of ivory.

my eyes never falter from yours,
bathed in the golden light
that pours out from above.

the swirl of my cotton dress
floating against the kiss of the wind-
nature bears witness to our love.

but night falters,
and i catch my reflection looking
in the gaze of the pane,

mockingly it stares,
and realisation carves itself
out of the false reality
i can’t stop yearning for.

let the tears ricochet against my cheeks

and watch how they blur into an ocean,

as i float in the midst of the unknown.


searching for a light,

yearning for a sign,

anything that can bring me back to you.


but you let the light extinguish

and left me in the darkness.

you were the sun to my moon,

 now like her, i lie in solitude.

it took you from us slowly,

the poison stealing you away.

first through the falls,

the slow deterioration of it all,

confining you to the chair.

your eyes staring out the window

lost in thought,

lost in the void

of the unknown.



i dealt your hand of cards,

eagerly prepared to win.

“best out of three”, you’d say,

“the winner gets a sugary cup of tea”.

though this time it was different.

your hands shakingly reached the deck,

as your cards toppled over

and the suite of my heart began to break.



the year passed quickly, almost too swiftly.

my head cowered in textbooks,

as that’s what students do,

or sat behind the wheel for the first time,

because that’s what seventeen year olds do;

maybe it clouded me from it all,

for ignorance is bliss - so they say.



yet nothing could shield me from the inevitable,

when you lay in that bed,

dressed in those medical gowns.

i held your hand,

where warmth would once roam,

now frost claimed its ground-

but i never let go



until you were taken away,

wrapped in the arms of light-

for your faith never waivered

nor your eternal love.

now i sit at the edge of the grave,

and my soul starts to ache;

my grandad, my best friend-

a husband, a father, a grandfather,

a fighter.

and my heart is beginning to fade.

You had the power to make dull things seem bright,

to make my soul glow,

to make me feel alive.

Not even a switch can bring you back-

maybe a flicker, 

but never a light that stays on.

Now the lack of your presence has me aching

yet you still haunt every corner.

I count the days,

each one as it passes,

slowly, unsurely,

praying to whoever cares to listen

for this storm to ease.

Clouded by this never-ending fog,

I keep calling;

yet the mist swallows me

and reluctantly, I let it.

The loudness of your silence
reverberates in the halls of your absence.
I stand in the lonely space you left,
wondering when you’ll return.

I tend to the memories we’ve shared,
giving them my fullest love and care,
but they never bloom like they used to
without the tenderness of your flare.

The seasons pass, the days go by,
fighting the battles I carry inside,
hoping for someone to notice,
the light that begins to subside.

But through it all I remain,
standing in this thickening void,
waiting for a voice, a hand, a sign
that will guide me home to you.

Delicacy touches my spine and my neck through your fingertips

before finally resting on my face, holding me like I'm special,

as if I'm the only one in this galaxy worth holding, protecting, admiring.

Unspoken words fall from your gaze which I blink back,

our hearts in sync playing musical notes of adoration.

I’m no longer a kid.

I care what people think of me;

the way I act,

the way I look,

the clothes I wear.

I’m no longer a kid.

Back then, letters were only building blocks used for spelling,

Why do they now mark the corner of my work?

Why do they determine my academic future? 

I’m no longer a kid.

My tears are no longer spilled over a grazed knee

For now they pour over anxious thoughts,

Will they ever stop falling? 

I'm no longer a kid.

We were told to be bodies full of kindness,

because everyone deserves love.

Why are some people treated differently?

I’m no longer a kid.

The world has opened up it’s true self to me

and now I drown in it.

I wish I could carve out that rotten pit that has grown deep inside me,

its stem entangled in the midst of ever-growing thoughts,

Watered by endless doubts,

Fuelled by never ending anxiety,

Nurtured by another version of me - one that's lost, eager to be found.

The darkness encourages this stem to thrive,

shooting up to consume me, desperate to spread.

Constellations on her face
I trace,
a sea of stars illuminate up above
with all their grace.

A glowing pearl her accessory;
the moon,
casting its beauty, glowing softly
upon the earth’s face.

An ombre of blue and black;
her aura
a serene atmosphere,
a silent lullaby for this place.

And me,

her admirer,
wrapped in her blanket of tranquillity
feeling safe in this warm embrace.​
