A movie audience in Los Angeles this week thought they were seated for a screening of Practical Magic (1998) but were surprised and no doubt thrilled when Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman walked in to introduce the new sequel that has its debut this September 11th.

I mean…how cool is this? I’d have been jumping up and down with excitement. That’s life in La La Land!

Imagine going to the movies and suddenly finding yourself in a super exclusive screening with two world class actresses introducing this hotly-awaited sequel to one of the most popular witch movies of the 1990s…a film which was also very formative for a lot of folks who later became interested in practicing modern witchcraft. I personally think The Craft (1997) caused a bigger stir and greater impact on people becoming involved in neopagan witchcraft, but its depiction of malevolent magic made it much more controversial. Practical Magic’s romantic vibe and Hallmark movie aesthetics didn’t hurt, either

What a treat to be at this event!

Yes, I am very much looking forward to the sequel! Despite rumors that it will deviate more from the original story than the first one did…but this is always a thing with Hollywood adaptations, alas. I’m also still hoping there will be a TV series based on Hoffman’s prequel novels, although the project has been stalled for a while now.

And, yes, I really, really wish I had been here for this magical preview event. Next time, invite me, PR folks! (p.s. I live in New York so an East Coast sneak preview would be super cool, with or without celebrity hosts)

The article I’m featuring today was first published on The Witches’ Voice website on Earth Day in 2002. It has weathered well, and I stand behind the sentiments and facts and exclamatory statements herein. But, obviously, our situation has grown much more dire in only two decades. I think it’s easy to get very anxious and depressed realizing how little has changed and how so much seems to have gotten worse. But I invite you to find beauty and hope in nature today, and every day. Nature teaches us about the power of believing in change and renewal.

I write to you from Boston, where last week we had a day that hit NINETY-THREE degrees (breaking the previous record for that day by eleven degrees!), and yesterday we had an earthquake measuring 5.1, and tonight, I hear, it’s going to snow. Global warming? NAAAAHHHH…

Today was Earth Day. Did you celebrate?

A picnic in a favorite park, perhaps? An outdoor benefit concert with inspirational speakers? (I went to an Earth Day concert in Central Park a few years ago: Mario Cuomo spoke, and the B-52s played. And there sure was a lot of trash on the ground afterwards. Same with an Earth Day concert on the Esplanade in Boston several years ago. Cool bands, great speakers, boatloads of garbage.). Maybe you participated in a community clean-up effort? Or maybe you just did some things to make your own environment more earth-friendly: put in low-flow shower heads or toilets, or planted herbs in pots on your windowsill, or finally recycled all those empty bottles, or replaced high-watt bulbs with more energy-efficient ones. Or perhaps, being a pagan or a witch, you performed a ritual to heal the planet, or created a special altar in your garden.

Good for you!

What will you do tomorrow?

Every day is Earth day, you know.

I was born in 1963. That means I was coming of age during the environmentally conscious 1970s. I remember Carter implementing energy-saving laws, I remember nation-wide advertising campaigns about using LESS of everything: less water, less electricity, less gasoline, less oil. Conserve! Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! I remember little signs posted in classrooms and office buildings: “Save Energy: Turn off lights when not in use.” Or “Conserve water; turn off the tap while brushing teeth.” And I did that stuff. Drove my family nuts, but I did it.

And I remember crying when Iron Eyes Cody did, his single tear falling after he rode his horse through a polluted valley and saw his beautiful homeland covered in garbage. A very successful ad campaign, why, so successful they even bring it around every few years so people remember: People Start Pollution. People Can Stop It. Recycling a TV commercial from the 1970s! Gosh, that’s clever.

Except it isn’t working.

Americans today are worse litterbugs than ever (and just so you don’t think I am only picking on America, I was horrified the last couple of times I went to great Britain: they have finally caught up with us on this one and are as disgusting about throwing trash in the streets as we are. London’s streets were so full of trash that in some areas it looked like a war zone). We buy huge amounts of over-packaged convenience foods in non-recyclable containers because we just don’t have time to cook (never mind what this is doing to our bodies , the increase of garbage in the landfills is also harming us). We buy artificially flavored nutrient-empty junk food because our obese nation has an obsession with snacking all day, every day (and of course we can’t be bothered to throw our cookie wrappers, soda cans and chip bags in the proper receptacle! Why should we? Everyone ELSE throws them on the ground!)

We eat chicken and beef that has been pumped full of hormones and antibiotics, so much so that girls in this country now start their menstrual periods an average of five years earlier than they did twenty years ago. Japanese kids who started eating American beef in their lunches outgrew their school desks in one generation. Pueblo Indians in the Southwest now have soaring rates of obesity and diabetes due to their “Americanized” diets full of fat and sugar. American factory farming practices has so polluted our water table with potent pesticides that hardly any so-called “pure” spring water source can be guaranteed untainted. These same factory farming practices (which stress production over conservation of the land) have so eroded topsoil that vital minerals and nutrients once present on our vegetables (read that “dirt in our diets”) have all but disappeared, leading to an alarming rise in asthma among children. The use of bovine growth hormone in milk products (the only purpose of which is to make cows produce more milk and increase profits in an industry that is already struggling to sell its product for even slightly more than what it costs to produce it) has been shown to lead in some cases to sever endometriosis and increased rates of breast cancer in women. Irradiation of fruits and vegetables could be exposing to gods only know what sort of toxicity. And genetic manipulation of our foodstuffs may well end up altering the food chain as we know it.

We have to wear the latest fashions and so we buy up those fancy new threads made in Taiwan or Thailand by workers who make pennies a week, but so what? We need new clothes! We drive around huge gas-guzzling SUVs to transport our groceries to our homes or our kids to soccer practice. We complain when gas prices go up, forgetting that in other countries gasoline is four or five times the price we pay here. Hey, why shouldn’t I drive a huge vehicle? Everyone else has one! Besides, I feel more aggressive, er, safer on the road when I drive one. We have bigger and better electronic devices that use enormous amounts of electricity and we are so desperate to “stay connected” that we use our cell phones everywhere (even while driving! Gosh, THAT sure is convenient!) that unsightly towers have been erected all over the country just to make sure those signals keep us in touch with our friends, family and business associates and can have those loud, inane, one-sided conversations in public (researchers are exploring the effects of cellular phone use on humans, and the relationship of increased cancer rates to the proximity of cellular towers to residential areas).

We demand newer and bigger homes and so we demolish historic houses, we want a new office building so we take the wrecking ball to the slightly-dilapidated old municipal buildings in the town center, we have to house a new multiplex and so the old art-deco opera house (which costs a lot to heat and besides the paint is peeling) gets torn down so we can put up a climate-controlled glass and cement monstrosity… and those weather-beaten, beautiful old barns? Unsightly! And so hard to keep up! Tear ’em down. I remember in the 1980s, when yuppie greed and wastefulness was everywhere (everyone had a new BMW and snorted coke off its dashboard), and the environmental movement seemed all but forgotten. Then, to appeal to the baby boomers that were perhaps feeling a bit guilty at leaving their morality and ideals behind once their stock portfolios became all important and they needed money to buy Baby Nikes and designer water bottle holders. Then some smart entrepreneurs had an idea: put “green” and “environmentally-friendly” on the package and people will actually think they’re doing something good by spending their money on it! Dolphin-safe tuna! Recyclable container! All natural! Fat-free soda pop!

I think the straw that broke the camel’s back for me was when the company formerly known as “Chem Lawn” changed their name to “TruGreen” AND put pictures of killer whales on their vans (whales? Are these a danger in suburban America?). That’s almost as bad as when Kellogg’s took the word sugar out of their cereal names, but Chem Lawn’s act is far more insidious. I mean, we can taste the sugar in cereal. But we don’t go around eating our lawns to see how much pesticide is on them. Here’s a tip: if it has the letters “icide” at the end, IT KILLS LIVING THINGS. It may kill bugs and weeds faster than it can kill us, but all such products are certainly doing a job on our planet, and how many of the diseases that have become more prevalent in the late 20th century and 21st are due to our toxic environment?

WHEW!

Perhaps you think I am ranting to no purpose. After all, issues such as a nation’s nutritional habits , and the loss of topsoil, and sweatshops making our running shoes, are all very complex and there are no easy answers. And of course it is easy to become angry or frustrated or overwhelmed by all this. But what can one small person do? (Besides implement the many earth-friendly tips given in this week’s update compiled by our lovely Dio!) What can we do? It all seems too much to comprehend at times, and depressing.

That is why I leave you with one simple, singular thought, on this Earth Day, 2002.

LIVE in HOPE and WORK for the future.

That means: don’t just see the dirty river or the trash on the banks: see the sparkling water that COULD be there if effort is made now. LIVE as if the Earth is generously allowing us to stay here, and as if She might toss us out on our butts any minute if we don’t clean up our act. HOPE that government and local organizations will start to clean up natural parks and communal areas. But know that all of us can and must WORK to make this happen. That might mean something as simple as picking up a bag of trash every couple of weeks until others start to take the hint. (I have been doing this in my own favorite nearby nature spot: Franklin Park, part of Boston’s Emerald Necklace, an amazing historic park designed by Frederic Law Olmsted, that sometimes has more than its share of trash). Start your own local society for the preservation of your favorite spot! You’d be surprised to find how many others in your community would be willing to clean up a park they also like to use. One tear from Iron Eyes Cody was all it ever took for me… to this day I cannot understand why people litter with impunity. I mean, I really don’t get it. But I am willing to set an example, anyway.

LIVE as if there’s a point to it all, as if a healthy lifestyle is actually making a difference not just to yourself, but to your loved ones, and to all humanity. HOPE that our frenzied consumer culture will evolve and start to see the problems with going too fast, buying too much, and not cleaning up after ourselves. But this takes WORK. Study alternatives to the status quo. Walk or bike to school or your job. Find a farm in your state that raises natural poultry and see if your local stores will stock their products. Turn off your cellphone. Turn off the computer. Take a walk. Smile up at the sky. Hug a tree. Love your Mother.

Go outside already! What are you waiting for? Tomorrow?

Yes, you read right, there’s a Practical Magic sequel coming this fall! This film is now nearly three decades old, almost as old as The Craft which turns 30 this year. Like The Craft (1996), Practical Magic (1998) arrived amid the excitement and flurry of the new internet age, which was an enormous cultural milestone that allowed people to discuss practically anything with other people thousands of miles away in real time (magical, really).

Both films had a widespread influence on the modern pagan witchcraft community. (See my “Witchvox Project” entry on the film here) But the influence and impacts of these films were very different: The Craft was a coming of age horror film that was also a cautionary tale about dabbling with magic. Practical Magic (based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel) wasn’t so much a horror film as it was a romantic comedy with witchy themes and characters.

Two sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman), who have very different personalities, both believe they’re cursed in love. They eventually follow the magical advice of their witchy aunts Franny (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest), and despite some sadness and danger along the way, romance and hilarity ensue.

I loved Hoffman’s novel and wished the film adaptation had followed it more closely (the teenage daughter characters were all but ignored), but one thing the film did very well was to give voices and colorful personalities to “the aunts” (who, oddly, had no dialogue in the novel). The actresses playing the aunts were terrific, and they were allowed to be sassy, funny, weird, and wise (as well as fashionable!).

Midnight margaritas are a compelling meme, apparently, and Hoffman’s 2017 prequel novel The Rules of Magic focuses on Franny and Jet as young women, along with their brother Vincent (also a witch). This novel is/was supposed to be made into a series for HBO, but that’s been rumored for seven years now. Personally I liked The Rules of Magic a lot and would love to see a series, but the film sequel, with an older Sally and Gillian played by Bullock and Kidman, seems to be happening first. This sequel doesn’t seem to be based on any of Hoffman’s novels, but the author is collaborating on the screenplay along with Akiva Goldsman (who helped co-write the first film adaptation with Hoffman and Robin Swicord), and Georgia Pritchett (who has written for the TV series Veep and Succession).

It will be directed by Susanne Bier, a Danish filmmaker who I’ve admired since her debut, a moving Dogme film called Open Hearts (starring Mads Mikkelsen in his first lead screen role). She directed the award-winning 2011 film In a Better World, and in addition to many other films, Bier has directed for TV, including The Night Manager, The Undoing, and Bird Box. So this bodes well for the film being in good hands.

Nearly a quarter century went by after Practical Magic’s publication before The Rules of Magic came out, but then Magic Lessons followed less than three years later in 2020. This is a prequel to The Rules of Magic, about the Owens family matriarch, Maria. Then the final installment in the novel series, The Book of Magic, came out in 2021. In addition to the sequel film Practical Magic 2 coming out September 18th, Practical Magic the Broadway musical is now in the works, co-created by Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg, adapted for the stage by Hoffman and playwright Peter Duchan. (Not that anyone asked but I’m also working on a concept for a stage musical about witches!) For whatever reason, the Practical Magic franchise has built up a lot of momentum in recent years, and it’s great to see so much of the original cast returning for a sequel.

But how many remakes, reboots, and sequels can we handle? (Let’s not even talk about that Hocus Pocus sequel, I couldn’t even get through the first one). I’m curious to see where they take the story from here, and honestly I think we need more witches in our pop cultural landscape to shake things up. I’d very much love to see more witchy stories on film that don’t rely on the same old supernatural effects to portray magic…fingers crossed Practical Magic 2 has some surprises in store.

You remember The Blair Witch Project, right? Let’s take a wee stroll down memory lane.

It was 1999. A little indie film that cost very little to make (around $60K, which is a miniscule budget even for an indie film), it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, sold for a million bucks to Artisan Entertainment, and became the highest-grossing film of all time. It captivated movie buffs, horror fans, critics, and mainstream audiences alike with its clever “found footage” conceit (inspired by the 1980 cult film Cannibal Holocaust which the filmmakers loved), and popularized an entirely new sub-genre of cinema: the fake horror documentary.

But before their Sundance debut, the filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez did some audacious things. (You can read more about this here, including one of my original writings on the film for Witchvox.) The film itself is, indeed, a juggernaut of audacity in every way, from its innovative conception to its innovative shooting style to its ragamuffin promotional campaign. There had never been anything like it, and there really hasn’t been anything like it since. It was lightning in a bottle.

And now, Hollywood wants to do a remake. Specifically Lionsgate and Blumhouse are teaming up to do this. Blumhouse, the studio behind blockbuster horror franchises like Paranormal Activity, and tepid sequels such as The Craft: Legacy (2020) and The Exorcist: Believer (2023), as well as some one-off films I rather liked including Jordan Peele’s Get Out (2017), Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem (2012), Mike Flanagan’s Oculus (2013), Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman (2018), and Daniel Goldhaber’s Cam (2018).

To be clear, there have been some follow-up projects already. The sequel, Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows came out in 2000, and although it has its strengths and weaknesses, any film that followed up the incendiary original was going to be eaten for a snack by critics and audiences alike (and it was).

I was in touch with director Joe Berlinger (award-winning documentary filmmaker and creator of the Conversations with a Killer series) when the film was being shot. We had connected after meeting in Boston where he and his filmmaking partner Bruce Sinofsky were showing the Paradise Lost documentary. Joe asked me to help him with a couple of scenes that needed some ritual language (my first uncredited script consulting gig! but not my last). I thought the initial concept was fascinating (a sort of meta-narrative about the first film’s success and instant cult status), and I also felt the sequel was unfairly maligned. Especially given some of the later Blair Witch franchise works which weren’t terribly original or interesting.

I’m cool with as many Blair Witch-inspired stories as the IP can support, but a remake of the original? I just don’t see any need for this. And I don’t think the unique context and conditions of the film can ever be replicated, nor should they be.

Can we just…not?

There’s a bit of of folklore that says you can balance an egg on its end at the exact moment of the vernal or autumnal equinox. I’ve done this and it works. I’ve heard scientific skeptics say this can be done at any time, but in my experience, it only works at that moment. Mind over matter? I just tried it, and couldn’t do it! But will try again at the equinox, 10:46 am EST.

That’s also when I will perform a simple hexing of Donald Trump, and all who aid and abet him. You can read more about this here. I hope you’ll join me in doing some sort of magical working for this profound moment which only comes twice a year.

The equinox is the point exactly between the two solstices, a when the hours of light and dark are in equal balance. It marks the shift of the seasons from spring to summer, or, in the Southern Hemisphere, from autumn to winter. The equinoctial tides are unusually high or low at this time, because the Sun, aligned over the equator, has a more potent gravitational pull when combined with that of the full or new Moon. Spring storms can be intense for this reason, sometimes causing flooding as rains combine with melting snow and ice.

Astrologer Diotima, in her blog Urania’s Well, writes about the equinox as a time for considering the nature of consciousness, and how it affects every living thing on Earth. There’s no question that the arrival of spring and autumn have profound cultural associations: this social energy can also feel powerful.

Look and listen around you. Gardens and parks burst into flower, migrating birds return, singing their songs on the breeze, people linger outdoors as temperatures grow warmer and the sun seems brighter. Whether it’s spring fever or autumn wistfulness, there’s a feeling of change and anticipation. A heightening of the senses.

We can avail ourselves of this earth energy to do ritual and move forward on our paths. In frightening times, grounding ourselves is important, to keep us fortified for what lies ahead. Now is also the time to connect with and build community. Perhaps a spring potluck, or a plant swap, or a neighborhood clean up?

There’s many ways to connect to others, but remember to start with yourself. Check in every day with how you’re feeling. Start a morning journal practice: even five minutes over your coffee or tea, jotting down your feelings, or recording them, instead of immediately reaching for your phone to start scrolling, can be a good way to begin the day with awareness and intention. Or add some beauty to your breakfast with music or nature or art. Begin the day in a way that makes you feel nourished and whole.

Go forth. May your equinox be powerful, and magical, and inspiring, and healing, and all you need it to be.

So now there is less than a week to go until spring officially arrives, and I hope you’ll join me on the 20th to work magic against Donald Trump.

I’m calling this working a hex, but you can do whatever kind of magical method feels best for you: a binding, a banishing, a spell, a meditation, whatever works and feels appropriate. You can do it on the Equinox, which is a new moon in Aries, and every new and/or full moon thereafter, or whenever feels right.

I thought it might be good to go over a few basics for folks that are new to doing magical workings. There’s not really a right or wrong way to do this, though. If you’re somewhat new to this kind of thing, know that you don’t need any special tools or knowledge to do this kind of work: you need intention, and the will to do it. You can do this on your own, or with a partner, or with a group.

Basics of Getting Ready: Prepare Your Space

A calm and quiet space is good to have, too (silence your phone so you’re not distracted). I'm a long time practitioner of witchcraft and well-versed in many forms of ritual, but I’m not doing any complicated preparation for this. I want to keep my focus very simple and intentional.

I usually re-do my altar for each season festival, so I will do that beforehand, and place some crystals and other objects to be charged with the energy raised. I’ll do this working at the exact moment of the equinox (which is 10:46 AM EST), and then again at dusk, but any time that day or evening is good.

You can use some incense or herbs to cleanse your space, or not. I find spritzing with rosewater to be a good and quick way to refresh the space. I’ve also been doing a kind of cleansing ritual nearly every day this winter: heating up water with orange peels, also adding some herbs and a few drops of essential oil. This adds humidity to the dry heated air, and the herbs and oils smell great and add various healing and mood-lifting properties. (favorite oils I use for this: lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, patchouli, frankincense, and Aura Cacia blends like “Focus” or “Relaxing”).

I usually fast for several hours before I do a working, then eat lightly afterward as a way of grounding. I like to use candles, but you don’t have to (also, I never leave lit candles unattended and neither should you). Sometimes I like to raise energy before a working with breathing, or chanting, or movement; you can do this, too, if you like. Again, do what you’re accustomed to or whatever feels right.

Some folks like to make small bags with herbs or stones, or poppets, for focusing energy. My friend Jennifer is planning on making a poppet with her working and gave me permission to share her ritual design: “Tomorrow I plan to make a poppet of Trump. My idea is to write all the things, people, executive orders—all the things we want to bind or banish, then crumple the papers up and stuff the poppet with them along with sage and cedar for cleansing/banishing. Then we can use the poppet in the ritual. I wanted to stuff it with paper and herbal incense and use cotton material to make the poppet so we can burn it.” I love this idea! You can also write intentions on a piece of paper and burn or bury it without making a poppet. Words are powerful, whether we write them or speak them aloud.

The Working: Words

Below is the basic wording I’m planning to use. You can borrow it, or adjust it to suit your needs, or come up with you own. You can also do your working in silence, with visualizing, or you can write these words down.

I hex you, Donald Trump. I curse your life and your legacy and your being.

I hex you, Donald Trump. I call for your immediate impeachment, arrest, and imprisonment, for your crimes against individuals and against all of humanity.

I hex you, Donald Trump. I call for accountability from all who have aided and abetted you and your evil actions.

(You can recite names here! Suggestions to include: Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon, J. D. Vance, Pete Hegseth, Kash Patel, Karline Leavitt, Peter Thiel, Kristi Noem, et al. Say “I hex you, Stephen Miller,” and just go down the list that way if you want.)

I hex you, Donald Trump. May all who’ve been harmed by your greed and bigotry and cruelty be avenged. May they receive justice, and comfort.

I hex you, Donald Trump. I call on all people to stand up against fascism and oppression, and to work to heal and revitalize all that has been damaged.

So say we all, and so shall it be done.

So mote it be.

Afterwards

After you finish your working, you should take some deep breaths, ground and center, and know your intentions are good and just. Think of all the positive movement forward that will be possible once this man and his enablers are no longer in power. Think of what you can do to help repair what has been damaged, how to build your connections to community. Thank you for your efforts, and know that we can all join together to make things better.

If you were able to see the lunar eclipse in the wee morning hours, congratulations! It was cloudy here during our brief window in the Northeast. But the energy of an eclipse is palpable and we often feel its effects for the rest of the lunar cycle, astrologers say.

The moon in Virgo reflects that sign’s earthy qualities: practicality, discernment, perfection, productivity. Harvest is also a potent theme, and one we can look at apart from the usual autumn season: we can look at our harvests each month and ask what we have nurtured and grown, what we have sown and reaped, what we have gathered, what we have to be grateful for.

Ruled by Mercury and associated with Earth Goddess Demeter, Virgo is also a sign that emphasizes communication and inspired action. In the larger picture, we must acknowledge that the world is struggling with misinformation and misdirected energy. Grounding ourselves helps us communicate and act with better intention and clarity.

Magical work done on this full moon can be very potent for self-improvement and self-love, acceptance and aspiration, and creating new goals. Tarot and other divination is very potent when done at the full moon. Good mundane activities for this full moon might include cleansing, planning, re-organizing spaces, and re-assessing routines. Spring Equinox is a great time to focus on health, too, possibly adding a new activity or approach to your habits.

As we move closer to the equinox on March 20, when we will be hexing Donald Trump and all who aid and abet him, feel that waning moon remove all obstacles and clutter. Focus on what comes next. The New Moon on the Equinox is in fiery Aries: a moment of power that embraces creativity, initiative, and courage. It takes courage indeed, and focus, to work a hex on the world’s most powerful and dangerous man. We are up to this task, my witches.

In the coming days as we get closer to March 20, I will be providing some suggestions and ideas for the working, to help those who need some guidance, but this is very much a group effort and everyone should approach the working with whatever system or practices work best for them.

This date (3-20-2026) is a 3 in numerology: this number emphasizes creativity, communication, and optimism, and the social sphere. This working is a way of connecting with everyone who, like us, had had enough and knows we must join together, in strength and compassion, in determination and righteous anger. Think about how you will continue to build community as we move forward.

The great Amy Madigan has won an award for Best Supporting Role by a Female Actor from the Screen Actors’ Guild (at a ceremony henceforth known as the “Actor Awards”) for her fantastic and memorable performance in Zach Cregger’s hit horror film Weapons.

“I’ve been doing this a long ass time,” Madigan said during her acceptance speech, noting she had never been nominated by SAG for an award before. Her portrayal of a strange old woman who dyes her hair bright red and wears colorful outfits, and who turns out to be witch causing murder and mayhem in a small town, is unforgettably spooky, weird, and deranged. Just what plenty of people want in a witch character!

Okay, so yeah, we also want to see see wise, kind, gentle healers and priestesses of nature, but witches in the movies always come with some controversy and contradiction, don’t they? It’s so exciting to see Madigan honored for this role, and if you haven’t seen this compelling film, be warned, it’s scary and disturbing. In case you didn’t know, I’m writing a whole book about this, and am excited to amend my mention of this film in it by celebrating this fine performer’s well-deserved award.

Last week I announced I’m coordinating an effort to hex Trump at the Spring Equinox, on March 20, 2026.

To prepare ourselves for this magical working, I suggest we do some preparation at the Full Moon, which is one week from tonight, March 3, 2026.

It will be a full moon in Virgo, and lunar eclipse. The Equinox will be a New Moon in Aries. These are very potent and suitable placements!

A full moon in Virgo is characterized by a feeling of purpose, organization, and grounded determination. It is a time to make plans and set things in order, and pay attention to details. It’s a moon transit that makes us less tolerant of disorder, mess, and chaos: the very things we’re focused on, perhaps, as we prepare to do the bigger working at Equinox. However, the Virgo tendency to be critical and inflexible also means we need to try and check this impulse, and practice tolerance and give grace where appropriate.

A new moon in Aries is a potent time of initiative, purpose, and action. The fire sign of Aries, rules by Mars, is marked by courage and integrity. These are good qualities to invoke and embody, when we’re working magic to restore integrity to the world by hexing a man who is causing so much chaos.

And hex him we must. We must unite to try and defeat this man, we we did a few years ago.

To neutralize him, and all who aid and abet him.

To burn his edifices of greed and bigotry and cruelty to the ground.

To comfort all who have been harmed, and revitalize all that has been damaged.

So it shall be done.

The powerful filmmaking debut of Robert Eggers, The Witch, was released ten years ago today. The full original title, THE VVITCH: A NEW ENGLAND FOLKTALE, uses an archaic spelling with two capital “V”s in place of a “W” and a suggestion that it may not be entirely true, but the script draws upon actual historical documents from the days of witchcraft accusations and trials. This historical drama set is smart, beautiful, and often disturbing to watch, and made a star of its lead actress, Anya Taylor-Joy.

My review was fun and invigorating to write: I had never seen anything quite like this film. Shockingly, I attended two screenings in local movie theatres, and both times, I was with a friend, and the six or seven other people in the theatre all walked out within the first half hour. The film was promoted as an intensely frightening horror film, which indeed it is, but the slow-burn opening and the authentic period language apparently didn’t appeal to the average multiplex movie goer.

The A24 website let me write about watching and discussing the film with another witch (Pam Grossman, author of Waking the Witch and host of the Witch Wave podcast). I like to think the film had a positive impact on the modern witchcraft movement which seems to be constantly undergoing a mini-renaissance.

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, may I suggest you watch it this weekend and bask in its deliciousness? The superlative performances, the haunting imagery, the compelling narrative, and the brilliant exploration of the figure of the witch in history make this one of the finest films about witches, and indeed one of the best horror films of all time.

Remember when we hexed Donald Trump?

I do! My friend Michael Hughes created a social media campaign to plan it. Lots of people joined in (witches and non-witches alike!), and it went on for several months at the full moon. Other ne’er-do'-wells were added to the roster.

I wrote about this social phenomenon, and the political roots of modern witchcraft, for a now-defunct and most excellent website called The Establishment.

We think we did some good (he lost in 2020).

But oh, my witches, the time has come ‘round again.

We must once again unite to defeat this man.

To neutralize him, and all who aid and abet him.

To burn his edifices of greed and bigotry and crueltry to the ground.

Maybe you only know about Lupercalia from that episode of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA (Season 2, Episode 3, aka Chapter Fourteen), where there are two wonderful parallel celebrations of Valentine’s Day at Greendale high school and Lupercalia at the Academy of Unseen Arts. The show frequently employ some interesting bits of lore based in ancient pagan practices (I wrote about this for Refinery29), and also introduced audiences to many intriguing elements of neopagan witchcraft. I was happy to write about this very popular show for the Orlando Weekly, and several times for my TV column in the Arts Fuse.

The show’s portrayal of the Lupercalia celebration was romantic and fairly erotic, with costumes of red and white, and a stylish dance intended to have couples pair off with one another. This Roman festival of fertility was also known as the Feast of Februa: a word which refers to tools used for purification, and possibly to strips of goat skin (about which more in a moment). Its celebrations were said to be characterized by wild abandonment and the honoring of Pan, the goatfoot god, to seek his protection. I wrote about it for my blog some years ago, and mentioned a piece by Yvonne Aburrow about the festival’s historical origins, including the veneration of wolves (Luper = wolf), although their significance to the festival is somewhat obscure.

Some covens celebrate Lupercalia in place of Imbolc, since the two festivals are fairly close in the calendar. Elements of Lupercalia and the Greek festival of Aphrodisia, honoring Aphrodite, are said to be precursors to many Valentine’s Day customs. The Roman custom of Lupercalia was meant to purify the city, and as people ran through the streets, some were lightly struck with leather flails (made of goat skin! in honor of Pan) on their hind quarters to purify them, a bit of lore that is odd and maybe a little controversial but also interesting.

What does it mean, though, to purify, to cleanse? Obviously we can take this literally (fasting, cleaning, etc.), but often when creating modern rituals we seek ways to manifest change. A shift in the status quo, a new perspective, a reset. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a reset right about now. And since winter has been unusually cold and severe this year, getting outside to commune with nature has been challenging, so I find myself connecting with nature through art and poetry and music. Is Pan lurking there? Well, yes, sometimes! And if he doesn’t jump out at us, it’s okay to go looking for him.

The invocation of Pan in late winter is surely intended as a way to reconnect with the dormant green earth, the sleeping flora and fauna. Pan is the god who awakens the land in spring, embodying, as one of my favorite writers Anne Louise Avery put it recently, a “wild, green, unfettered, woodwosed joyfulness.

I hope your mid-February is not too cold or dreary. I know it’s scary out there right now. Remember we need to take care of ourselves, in order to be able to care for each other. Be alert and stay informed, connect to your trusted support network. Spring will come again, and renew our sense of purpose and our resilience for what’s coming.

How is your Imbolc this year? The cross quarter days can be intense, I find. That midpoint between solstice and equinox, or equinox and solstice: Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas, Samhain…these festivals were long ago associated with the “true” start of their respective seasons, in regions where the seasonal folklore was full of observations of the natural world: animals, plants, trees, weather. In winter, the sere dormant landscape can seem bleak, devoid of portents, a blank space. What can we see before us, on these icy cold days, in these dark and stormy times?

It’s been a while since I posted here because life has been a bit overwhelming for me lately. I still have my 2025 media survey to share, and some reviews and recommendations, and will get to them soon, I promise. But for today, this moment of transition between seasons, I’m going to talk about witchy resistance.

The world is in a maelstrom of struggle and chaos now. Some of us, warm and sheltered and safe for the moment, are looking on with horror and wonder how we can help. We can’t stop tyrannical government-sanctioned thugs in their tracks, and yet the urgent situation compels us to do something, anything.

How do we help? How do we create and manifest when we feel fearful, exhausted and empty? Listening to our hearts and finding compassion is where it begins. Acknowledging our good fortune with gratitude for what we have, and finding ways to help others is paramount.

Building community is important now. Sharing helpful resources is one way to help: I have been sharing links on social media to organizations providing food assistance to people in need. I find it helps me soothe my feelings of anger and frustration to do something helpful. If you have the means, donate to organizations that are helping, whether locally or nationally or internationally.

Do you have extra winter clothing? Donate it to places that help homeless people. Do you have plenty of food? Give extra non-perishable stuff to your local food pantry. Have elderly neighbors who are lonely or physically struggling? Check in on them and see if they need help (winter can be isolating). Bake something and bring it to the folks at your local homeless shelter or other places where poorly-paid people are working hard. Kindness inspires hope, and can be contagious. (Be careful out there with this ongoing pandemic and raging flu season, also: don’t go out in public if you’re sick, wear a mask, cover your coughs, etc.)

Staying healthy, alert, and aware is crucial now. We can’t help others if we’re overtired, sick, stressed, or distracted. And yet it’s understandable that we can’t be at our best in a volatile situation. Look to your support system, in person or online, call a friend, send an email, check in with each other. We’re in this together. I’m sorry if this sounds like vague platitudes, when there is genuine struggling and suffering happening across the globe. We must continue to bear witness, and help as we can.

We’ve been here before. America has never truly been a perfect place and our history of violence and oppression is shameful. But people have fought back and tried to create change, and improve thing. And we can’t lose track of how much progress has been made while it seems like so much of it is being undone. We saw this coming, and while it may be worse than we expected, this is no time to back down. I wrote about witchy resistance a few years ago, and I’m reminded of how many witch-minded folks wanted to know what they could do. The situation is obviously so much more urgent now.

Witches may feel compelled to work magic at this time, and that’s fine. But spells and curses and healing chants should be augmented with actions that reach real people. Doing whatever you can to feel grounded is important now, because some days feel like a surreal wave of evil is prevailing. And the most useful magic work now is what we do to help ourselves be strong and resilient, today, tomorrow, and in the days and weeks and months ahead.

But you’re not here for weather and horticulture musings, are ye?

Leaving aside the tumultuous political and social situation for the moment, 2025 has been outstanding year for film and TV. There have even been some witchy characters in films and shows that are not ostensibly about witchcraft. I’ll be posting about some witchy films and shows this month (including Weapons, Bring Her Back, Hedda, The Ugly Stepsister, Hamnet, The Testament of Ann Lee, and others) as I look back at the year in review.

And yes, I know this blog hasn’t been very active this year. It’s been rough all around, and I know I’m not alone in feeling a bit downtrodden. I hope you all have some support around you if you’re finding things difficult.

I broke my wrist in February and have had assorted health problems related to that. I totaled my car in November (no one was hurt, thank goddess!) after putting a lot of money into repairs this past year. I’m starting to get back to many writing projects that I fell behind on. But all in all I’m doing okay and am frankly way more worried about other people worse off than me, people more vulnerable than me, as I watch things fall apart in this country.

But we look to entertainment media, to films and television shows and books and ephemera, to tell us things about where we are now, what our lives are, and how art and history and stories reflect our own experiences, our hopes and dreams and regrets. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and try to share insights and connections and maybe make sense of it all. If there’s magic to be found, magic to be done, it starts, I believe, with keeping our creative impulses alive.

Here is hoping December brings your beauty and comfort and joy, and I look forward to sharing some witchy thoughts soon.

It’s also been a beautiful autumn season, after a worrying late summer drought here. It’s cold and windy this week, which feels very suitable for the cross quarter that bridges autumn and winter…

I enjoyed some Hallowe’en vibes this week, and tonight am co-hosting a ritual at the local witch shop with my podcasting partner-in-crime, Kate. I’m recording a new podcast episode tomorrow with a fabulous author who’s written an exciting new book about witches in film. There’s also some great movies and TV to talk about, and the witchy media elements of 2025 have been somewhat unexpected but also amazing this year.

Yes, folks, it is Beltane Eve. A time of renewal and rebirth and rejuvenation and new beginnings. Did you think we’d get there? Spring always makes things seem possible, but times are challenging to say the least.

It was one year ago that my first podcast episode was posted and it was kind of a difficult and very busy year, but I am finally back to working on this new project and plan to be posting new episodes more regularly, alongside the writing and research for my book.

The third episode of my witchy media podcast The Witching Hour is Nigh is now available for your enjoyment on Youtube. This one also features my friend Kate Laity as a special guest, and we’re discussing Rosemary’s Baby. Kate was also my guest for the second podcast episode posted recently.

This third episode was a bit of a one-off and there are a few minor sound and image glitches, but I think it came out pretty good considering I am still teaching myself how to do this! We really only scratch the surface of this extremely influential (and controversial) film, and we’re excited to delve deeper into it at a future date.

Yes, it took me a while! But I finally finished another episode of my podcast, “The Witching Hour is Nigh” and am working on episode #3!

My special guest and friend Kate Laity, who was featured on my first podcast episode, and I went to see The Substance late last fall and recorded our discussion of this fascinating film by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat.

Also, Beltane approaches, marking nearly a year since my first podcast was posted. It has been quite a year. I think we’re all feeling kind of on edge lately, but also hopeful that things will get better, and springtime often fills us with a sense of renewal and rejuvenation. In honor of the season I will be offering a new subscription special and some other seasonal surprises…

Here is hoping your spring tide is full of flowers and gentle breezes.

I love Joe Wright’s gorgeous, sensual adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (with screenplay by Deborah Moggach, based on Jane Austen’s beloved novel). It’s steeped in gorgeous nature imagery, giving it a sensory richness that, prior to its release, was not often seen in so-called costume dramas. This film helped redefine Austen as a romantic writer (as opposed to one focused mainly on social satire and intrigue) and lent new boldness to on-screen period dramas.

Joe Wright’s brilliant film adaptation has bewitched me, body and soul, for twenty years, and now it’s showing in theatres (AMC and various arthouses) in honor of its 20th anniversary. Here is a more in-depth piece I wrote for The Arts Fuse, exploring the film’s sumptuous use of the natural world to reflect the characters’ depth and complexity.

If you can’t see it in a theatre this week, it’s available to stream on Netflix, Prime, Apple TV, and other channels, and on DVD. And before you ask, yes, I also love the BBC 1995 mini-series starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. But I do prefer the 2005 version.

And if you didn’t know, the two Misters Darcy square off in another English period film (part political thriller, part romance), 2022’s Operation Mincemeat.

2024 had some offerings, too, though nothing really knocked my socks off (though I still have a couple of things to watch, like Hysteria!), and I noticed the trend towards either Hallmark-style “good witch” stories still dominate, or silly stuff with too many supernatural special effects. Some good shows occasionally have a “real witches” episode (like PEN15, or Broad City, or even …And Just Like That) and I definitely want to see more of this.

Gotta say: One of the most hotly anticipated witchy series of 2024, Mayfair Witches, was kind of disappointing. It had all the right ingredients, including gorgeous cinematography and an impressive cast, including Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Fielding, Annabeth Gish as Deirdre Mayfair (she’s terrific in an underwritten role), Jack Huston as Lasher (an odd bit of casting that grew on me), and the great Harry Hamlin, dapper and darkly secretive, as Cortland Mayfair. Rowan is played well by Daddario (a wonderful actress who I loved in True Detective, The White Lotus, and We Summon the Darkness), an independent, somewhat self-destructive young doctor who is suddenly beset with disturbing visions of her witch legacy. But alas, though the first couple of episodes had a strong start, and the show has an artfully atmospheric look and pleasingly spooky vibe, the writing became quite lackluster as the story progressed.

To be fair, Anne Rice’s novels were not always superbly written, either: the first novel in this series, The Witching Hour, had some compelling chapters set in earlier historical periods, but the contemporary scenes of dialogue often felt trite and awkward. But adapting literature to television means improving on the original wherever possible, and this one fell short, much like A Discovery of Witches did.

My personal theory about this seemingly pervasive trend for witchy shows to be mostly bad is that producers may think that having witchcraft as a premise already relegates the series to a genre story, and that people interested in horror or witches will automatically watch it no matter how good or bad it is. Sure, witches are a hot commodity in media and have been for ages, and the proliferation of streaming series has tapped into this evergreen trend and will continue to do so. That doesn’t mean we don’t desire, and deserve, better witchy TV. Apparently we’re supposed to be happy with crumbs, while continually hungering for a feast (or at least a substantial potluck). Sigh.

Enter Agatha All Along which was, well, not too terrible. This is a 2024 spin-off of the 2021 horror-sitcom mini-series set in the Marvel universe, WandaVision. I enjoyed that show for its high-end production values, intriguing pop culture themes, and great cast, but ultimately found the set-up a bit too gimmicky. Agatha All Along is focused on Wanda’s weird neighbor, Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), who we learn—via a silly song in the series finale—was the force behind all the weirdness.

The spin-off begins with a rather clever nod to its origins by paying homage to another television series (as WandaVision did with shows like Bewitched and The Brady Bunch). But instead of a popular sitcom, it’s a recent crime drama (Mare of Easttown, which I loved), and Agatha is a detective investigating a local homicide case. After a run-in with a colleague and ex-lover (Aubrey Plaza, who, having authored a witchy children’s book and named her production company Evil Hag, is apparently required to be in at least one witchy movie or series per calendar year), Agatha realizes she’s in a WandaVision-style simulation, and isn’t a police detective at all. She remembers she’s an ancient and powerful witch who is required to go on a quest, and gathers some witchy helpers to accompany her. They’re women who are all struggling at life in one way or another, and then there’s a teenage dabbler who seems to know all about Agatha’s storied past, and she’s flattered enough by his fan-like devotion to invite him along.

The cast is brilliant, especially the legendary Patti Lupone as a seasoned psychic, and the actors manage to effectively transcend the somewhat pointless story. The plot seems mainly focused on a journey down the “Witches’ Road” immortalized in an old folk song that was reprised by the rock star mom of one of the witches; and the song is performed (beautifully) in every episode as the witchy travelers face various challenges, complete with era-appropriate costume changes. There’s plenty of witchcraft references in the opening and closing credits, the dialogue is peppered with clever nods to New Age witchcraft and pop culture, and the young acolyte’s bedroom is full of beautiful magical tools and posters of witchy movies and artists. Agatha All Along is is fun to watch, often funny, with great special effects. But overall I wasn’t terribly impressed with the first season of this series, which seems flashy and self-aware and witty, but devoid of depth or lingering meaning. But I will definitely watch Season 2.

I trust you’ve emulated the Roman god Janus and taken a good hard last look at 2024 as you turn your gaze towards 2025. May this year bring better things for everyone. I know it’s rough right now. I know many people are struggling. I hope you can find moments of beauty and joy, comfort and inspiration, and that you can feel centered in all you do and plan to do.

As for me, I’m continuing my work researching and writing my book The Witching Hour: How Witches Enchanted the World. I’m now looking at all the new witchy media that has emerged in the previous calendar year, and there was a lot of it!

Will all of it be featured in my book? Alas, no. It’s not really a comprehensive catalog of media, more an exploration of social and artistic trends combined with deeper analysis of different texts. But the fact that witches, witchcraft, paganism, and the occult continue to be such popular subjects for film and TV (not to mention novels, comics/graphic novels, and anime) is encouraging, and kind of amazing, really.

2024 had a wide range of witchy stories on offer. I still have some films and TV to get caught up on, but I’ll start with a few witchy films worth seeing, and then in a new post cover some witchy TV, and add more films as I manage to see more (I am hunting for a few things that aren’t widely available yet).

I suppose the big name witchy movie of 2024 is Wicked. This was one of a small number of films I actually saw in a theatre. It’s wonderfully entertaining and thrilling to watch, full of fabulous dance numbers, gorgeous costumes, and great cinematography, plus a wonderful cast. The chemistry between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda is simply magical, onscreen and, well, off (my goddess, this press tour!), and Jonathan Bailey (as Prince Fiyero) continues to impress me with his enormous talent. The film doesn’t shy away from engaging with socially conscientious messaging about othering and marginalizing people, and I think it does so intelligently and effectively. I dressed up in emerald green and pink for the occasion, and I’m looking forward to seeing it again.

Another popular film that isn’t ostensibly about witches but that turns out to be very witchy indeed, was The Substance, directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat. Demi Moore plays an actress whose main claim to fame is being a sexy aerobics instructor, and when she turns fifty, Hollywood seems to be done with her, but she’s not done with Hollwyood. This film is an intense ride and I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t seen it yet, but it’s not for the squeamish. Heck, I consider myself pretty inured to body horror and this had me covering my eyes and yelling out loud and shrinking into my seat over and over (I went with my friend Kate Laity and we recorded a podcast discussing it which I hope to have posted soon). The witchy part? Well, let’s go with the pervasive demonizing and ostracizing of older women, shall we? Plus that very witchy finger…eeek! (streaming on Prime and Apple TV)

But, folks, if you know me at all, you know I tend to prefer films that are somewhat off the beaten track, and we certainly had a lot of those, too. One innovative film that I tried twice to see at the London Film Festival (and missed getting a seat both times!) was Late Night with the Devil. The advance buzz on this was mighty, and with good reason. This clever period piece directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes purports to be some “discovered footage” of a 1970s era talk show where a charismatic host (the great David Dastmalchian), hoping to boost his ratings, has a surprise guest on the show: a teenage girl who is said to be possessed by the devil. The live taping goes horribly awry and there’s plenty of wild paranormal and horror antics, some funny, some terrifying. This film really effectively captures the late 1970s cultural moment when the occult explosion was giving way to a rising paranormal obsession, and the imminent backlash of the Moral Majority, that ultimately led to the Satanic Panic. (streaming on Hulu, Prime, Apple TV and elsewhere)

One witchy film I expected to get more attention was Apartment 7A. This prequel to Rosemary’s Baby was directed and co-written by Natalie Erika James whose 2020 film Relic was one of my favorites that year. Julia Garner plays Terry Gionoffrio, a young dancer who lives in the same building with Rosemary Woodhouse, and who also knows the eccentric couple Minnie and Roman Castevet (here played by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally). This intriguing prequel digs into what led to Terry’s mysterious death, a pivotal moment in the 1967 film that leads to Rosemary and her husband Guy befriending the Castevets, who turn out to be Satan-worshipping witches. This spooky, suspenseful prequel to one of the most iconic horror films of all time has an authentic 1960s look and excellent performances, though personally I’d have loved to see a bit more backstory on the witch coven. In my next post I’ll continue exploring some more witchy films from 2024, including The Devil’s Bath, Witches of God, the British horror film Witch, Elizabeth Sankey’s documentary film Witches, and the wonderful Queer by Luca Guadagnino (who directed the 2015 remake of Suspiria), which has some occult goings-on and a very witchy cameo from Lesley Manville.

Then I’ll look at some TV series including Agatha All Along, Domino Day, Mayfair Witches, and another very witchy cameo in True Detective: Night Country. Until then, I wish you all a gentle entry into the new year…
