Mexican Independence Day and Chiles en Nogada

September 16th is the independence day of Mexico NOT May 5th / Cinco de Mayo* like so many assume.

The national celebration begins on the evening of September 15th, when millions gather in central plazas across the country to hear civic leaders reenact Hidalgo’s rallying call, climaxing with shouts of “¡Viva México!” amidst bell tolls, traditional music, and vibrant fireworks displays.

During September, you’ll find a beautiful and delicious example of Mexican patriotic cuisine: Chiles en Nogada. Legend holds that this culinary masterpiece was created by Augustinian nuns at the Santa Mónica convent in Puebla to honor the colors of the new national flag: green roasted poblano peppers, drenched in a brilliant white walnut-cream sauce (nogada), and topped with ruby-red pomegranate seeds and parsley. Prepare for a Month of Festivals & Celebrations

September is one of the most culturally active and festive months in Mérida and throughout the state of Yucatán. Beyond the national Fiestas Patrias (Independence celebrations), the month marks a deep intersection of Mayan traditions, Catholic devotions, civic pride, and seasonal harvest rituals.

Religious & Patron Saint Festivals (Fiestas Patronales)

In Yucatán, patron saint festivals (fiestas patronales) are deeply tied to religious syncretism. They feature vaquerías (traditional street dances where locals dressed in white hipiles and guayaberas dance the jarana to live brass orchestras), fireworks, and traditional recorridos which are similar to small rodeo arenas.

The Gremios (Guild Processions)

One of the most visually distinct Yucatecan traditions starting in mid-September is the season of Los Gremios (trade guilds). Dating back to the 17th century, different labor unions—bricklayers (alarifes), shopkeepers, carpenters, and mirror-makers—take turns organizing daily colorful processions through the streets to the cathedral.

Each guild carries hand-carved floral standards, banners, and statues, accompanied by brass bands and the frequent popping of ceremonial firecrackers (voladores) to announce their arrival.

Civic & Seasonal Celebrations

• Noche del Grito & Independence Parade (Sept 15–16): Tens of thousands gather in Mérida’s Plaza Grande on the evening of Sept 15 for live concerts, traditional food, and the governor’s reenactment of El Grito from the balcony of the Government Palace, followed by a civic-military parade on Sept 16.

• Commemoration of the Niños Héroes (Sept 13): A solemn civic ceremony held at Parque de la Mejorada honoring the young cadets who defended Chapultepec Castle.

• Autumn Equinox at Dzibilchaltún (Sept 21–23): Just minutes north of Mérida, thousands gather at dawn at the Mayan ruins of Dzibilchaltún to watch the rising sun align perfectly through the doorway of the Temple of the Seven Dolls.

Mariachi: The National Sound of Independence

Mariachi is the undisputed soundtrack of September 15th and 16th across all of Mexico.

• The Atmosphere: It delivers the high-energy, festive, and fiercely patriotic vibe needed for Independence Day.

• The Traditions: When crowds gather in public plazas (Zócalos) for the Grito de Dolores, mariachi bands lead the country in singing national anthems and staples like “México Lindo y Querido” or “El Rey” amid fireworks.

• The Fit: It is essential. No Independence Day celebration or website section about the holiday is complete without it.

So here’s the honest answer from someone who actually lives here and has sat through a few storms with the windows taped up.

Yes, hurricanes are part of life in the Yucatán. No, Mérida is not Cancún, Cozumel, or Houston. The risk is real, but it’s meaningfully different from what you’d face on the coas. 2024 gave us a very clear reminder of both sides of that coin.

Let me walk you through what I’ve learned.

What Actually Counts as a Hurricane

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 74 mph (119 km/h) or more. They form over warm ocean water, roughly 79°F (26°C) and above.This is why the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are such reliable breeding grounds from summer through fall.

The three things that cause damage, in order of importance for inland Mérida:

• Torrential rain and the flooding that follows

• Wind damaging trees, power lines, and anything loose

• Storm surges which are a serious coastal threat but not a direct threat to Mérida itself

That third point matters more than people realize, and I’ll come back to it.

When Is Hurricane Season in Mérida?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. In practice, the months you actually pay attention to here are August, September, and October. This is when Caribbean and Gulf waters are warmest and storms have the most fuel. Early-to-mid September is the statistical peak.

During those months, we keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center and Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. The rest of the year, life goes on.

Where Mérida Actually Sits and Why It Matters

Here’s the piece most travel articles gloss over. Mérida is an inland city, roughly 35 km (about 22 miles) from the Gulf coast at Progreso. That distance doesn’t sound like much. But when a hurricane makes landfall, it starts losing power the moment it crosses land. By the time a coastal hurricane reaches Mérida, it has almost always been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Yucatán Magazine made the best analogy for tropical system risk here: Mérida is more comparable to Orlando, Florida than to Tampa or Miami. It’s inland and shielded, but not immune.

Coastal towns like Progreso, Celestún, Telchac, and Chuburná each face a different level of risk. If you’re thinking about a beach house, your calculation is not the same as it is in the city. As a rule of thumb, towns west of Progreso are more protected than towns east of it.

The Last Direct Hit: Hurricane Isidore, 2002

The last time Mérida took a direct hit with sustained hurricane-force winds was Hurricane Isidore in September 2002. This Category 3 hovered over the city for close to 30 hours. Trees came down everywhere, and many neighborhoods went without electricity or running water for weeks. Residents who lived through it talk about it the way people in New Orleans talk about Katrina; a reference point that divides before and after.

But here’s the key detail: even during Isidore, most homes in Centro Histórico came through with structural integrity intact. Broken windows, fallen trees, and long power outages, yes. Collapsed houses, overwhelmingly no. That’s because the older colonial homes here are built of stone and thick masonry. Exterior walls run 20 to 30 inches (50–75 cm) thick with interior partition walls 12 to 18 inches (30–45 cm). They’ve been standing through hurricanes for 200-plus years and have no intention of stopping now.

The Recent Picture: 2020–2025

Between Isidore and today, the pattern has been mostly tropical storms bringing flooding, with one very close call in 2024:

• 2020 — Tropical Storms Cristobal, Delta, and Zeta hit back to back. The water table rose so high that water came up from below in some neighborhoods. This is still the year people bring up when they complain about flooding.

• 2021 — Tropical Storm Grace brushed the city, mostly rain.

• 2023 — A relatively quiet season for the peninsula.

• 2024 — Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 1 in late September: fallen trees, flooded streets, power outages, canceled flights, but a mild impact overall.

• 2024 — Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified from Category 3 to Category 5 in the Gulf. It grazed the northwestern Yucatán coast on October 7–8. Then, sent considerable rain and flooding as far inland as Mérida before curving toward Florida. The eye stayed offshore and we were spared a direct hit. There was panic buying, the U.S. Consulate closed, and flooding in Centro was significant.

• 2024 — Separate from the named storms, multiple days of rain in late September flooded parts of Centro and adjacent colonias so badly that people abandoned stalled cars and walked home.

• 2025 — An unusually quiet season for the peninsula. For the first time in five years, we made it through without a named-storm impact.

No direct hurricane hit since 2002 is still technically true. But 2020 and 2024 are fair reminders that, according to locals, tropical systems can feel worse than a hurricane.

How Worried Should You Actually Be?

This is the part I want to be transparent about, because I think the real-estate brochures oversell the safety and the doom-scrollers oversell the danger.

What’s low-risk: a direct strike by a major hurricane at full strength (roughly once every 20-plus years, historically), and structural damage to a solid Centro home (rare, even during Isidore).

What’s worth preparing for: power outages that can last a few hours or a few days (and when the power goes, so does your water access), flooding in low-lying streets with poor drainage, and fallen trees such as chaká, mango, and flamboyán are the usual culprits. Take notice of any large old ones nearby before a storm.

Should Hurricanes Change Your Decision About Moving to Mérida?

In my honest opinion, as a foreign resident who has lived through several seasons here: no, not by much.

The hurricane risk in Mérida is real but limited, historically manageable, and less severe than what you’d face in Cancún, Tampa, Houston, New Orleans, or most of the southern U.S. coast. The bigger day-to-day weather inconvenience here is actually the rainy-season flooding and heat, not hurricanes.

What should shape your decision is where in Mérida you plan to live, and how sturdy and well-drained that specific house is. That’s a conversation I have with every scouting-trip client.

FAQ: Hurricanes in Mérida, Mexico

Does Mérida get hurricanes?

Yes, but infrequently as direct hits. The last major direct strike was Hurricane Isidore in 2002. Tropical storms and hurricane-related rain events are more common than actual hurricane landfalls in the city.

When is hurricane season in Mérida?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. The highest-risk months for Mérida are August, September, and early October.

Is Mérida safer than Cancún from hurricanes?

For most people, no. The hurricane risk is meaningfully lower than in many U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coast cities. The bigger things to factor into your decision are home quality, drainage, heat, and rainy-season flooding — all manageable with the right property.

Final Thoughts

Hurricanes in Mérida are part of the deal when you choose life on a tropical peninsula. So are afternoons that smell like limes and rain and mango, and Novembers so gentle you’ll text your old winter self in disbelief.

In 20-plus years, Mérida has taken one direct hurricane hit and a handful of scares. Most foreign residents I know would take those odds again tomorrow.

For those of you who are new here, let’s start with some context, including a question we get asked constantly: How do I even pay my electric bill in Mérida? Then we’ll get into the DAC; the tariff that quietly punishes high electricity use. And finally, the insider tips that actually moved the needle on our bill.

First, the Basics: How CFE Works

Comisión Federal de Electricidad, or CFE, is the government-owned energy company in Mexico. It’s the only provider of energy in the entire country. This means your rate is dictated by CFE. There’s no shopping around for a better deal.

Your CFE bill arrives every two months. Sometimes it’s in your mailbox; other times it’s folded up and stuck in your gate. Whether you receive a physical copy or not, you still owe the money. It’s worth keeping an old bill on hand so you can use the No. de Servicio to pay the next cycle even if the new one never shows up.

Miss the payment deadline? There is a 3-day grace period before your power is cut off. No warning calls, no grace period conversations. It just happens. Once you pay, service can come back within a few hours, or it can take a few days. Why the inconsistency? The only honest answer is: it’s Mexico.

Why is electricity so expensive here? Without competition, CFE sets the rates for the whole country, and those rates vary by region depending on climate. For example, hotter zones generally get a subsidy to offset the reality that you MUST run air conditioning to live comfortably. If you’re weighing cost of living here, know that electricity prices land in a similar range to what you’d pay in the U.S. If you’re used to running A/C freely, there’s usually a learning curve on cost.

Paying the bill used to mean a trip to a CFE office. Now you can pay online or at many local businesses. Don’t assume that because online payment worked once, it’ll work smoothly the next time. Patience is part of the process. I’m not going to list all the ways to pay here because they constantly change. We pay our CFE bill at a CFE-Matico machine similar to an ATM. These are found all over the city.

Understanding the Bill (And the Tariff That Can Wreck It)

The bill itself lists your name and address, the amount due, the cutoff date, your Número de Servicio (your account number so be sure to keep this handy if you ever lose a physical copy), and your Tarifa, which is your billing rate.

The government subsidizes each household’s electricity based on that Tarifa and where the house is located. Summer rates differ from off-season rates. But the one you really want to watch for is a special tarifa called the DAC Doméstica de Alto Consumo, or Domestic High Consumption.

Here’s how it works for Tarifa 1D, the classification most common in Mérida:

• The DAC limit: Your rolling 12-month average can’t exceed 1,000 kWh per month. Since CFE bills bimonthly here, that works out to a 2,000 kWh ceiling per billing cycle.

• Summer subsidy: During CFE’s roughly six-month “summer” period (typically starting April or May), you get up to 600 kWh per month at the heavily subsidized base rate before hitting the pricier excess brackets.

• Winter subsidy: From about November to March, that subsidized tier drops sharply to just 200 kWh per month. Go past it, and you’re immediately paying more per additional kWh.

If your average goes over the line, here’s what might be happening:

• You pay more because now you are in the DAC classification.

• The government subsidy no longer applies to your bill at all.

• DAC classification sticks for a full 12 months.

• Getting out isn’t automatic. Your average consumption has to drop back below the limit and stay there for the entire evaluation period. Only then can you request reclassification from CFE, receipts in hand as proof.

In other words: one hot 2-month cycle with the A/C cranked can follow you around for a year. Which is exactly why we got serious about bringing our usage down.

General Conservation Tips (You’ve Probably Heard Some of These)

Before we get to what actually worked for us, here are some basics. Much of which you’ll find repeated across the internet and social media, but it’s worth having in one place:

• Orientation matters. A north/south-facing house on an odd-numbered street catches more coastal breeze and less direct sun intensity.

• Mosquito screens let you take advantage of that breeze, especially in the evenings, cutting down on how much you need the A/C. Also helps to air out your house from the humidity.

• Turn A/C on when you enter a room, off when you leave. Use it sparingly and intentionally.

• Regular Service. Clean your A/C filters and have your minisplits serviced regularly, ideally before the hottest months hit. Every 4-6 months is ideal.

• Switch to energy-efficient bulbs. Older bulbs throw off heat in addition to burning more electricity.

• Check the yellow energy tag. Before buying any new appliance, especially refrigerators, which are typically the biggest electricity draw in the house.

• Use fans before reaching for A/C. A good fan moves a lot of air and helps you adapt to the climate rather than fight it.

• Keep the fridge away from the stove and out of direct sunlight. Ensure enough clearance around it for heat to escape.

• Size your appliances, A/C units, and pool pumps appropriately. Oversized equipment isn’t more effective, just more expensive.

  

House Features That Actually Help

If you’re house-hunting or building, these details make a measurable difference:

• Concrete block or mampostería (limestone construction) insulates exceptionally well.

• High ceilings let hot air rise and circulate up and away from living space.

• Lighter wall colors reflect light, keep interiors cooler, and reduce how much artificial light you need.

• Clean your fans regularly — dust and oil buildup makes them work harder for less airflow.

• A vent above the stove helps evacuate hot air from cooking.

• Sunblock-lined curtains, closed during the day, block a huge amount of heat from coming into the house.

• Open windows at night to let cooler air circulate through.

• Odd-numbered streets get more cross-breeze than even-numbered ones, and north-facing houses catch even more. If you have an interior garden, even better for breezes.

• Gas dryers are significantly cheaper to run than electric ones.

• Check your door seals to make sure cool air isn’t escaping.

• Have your fridge professionally cleaned at least once a year, especially the back panel around the fan and motor.

• Use a current regulator to protect against and smooth out power spikes. These are specifically designed for large appliances.

What We Actually Did Differently

Some of this is going to sound counterintuitive and goes against some of the advice above. But we have two years of data and a 54% lower bill to back it up.

We had an in-depth consultation with an A/C professional (Nielsen of NorthwindA/C) specifically about how to use and maintain our units; not just regular cleaning but actually using them correctly.

• Every unit stays on the “dry” setting. On your remote, this will look like a tear drop or little drops of water.

• We don’t cycle units on and off constantly. Instead, we keep one or two running in the shared living/kitchen area during the day and then turn them off at night. We turn on bedroom units at night and then turn them off in the morning.

• Every unit gets cleaned and maintained at least twice a year. Units in the kitchen, or near rugs, need an extra cleaning because of grease and dust buildup. We have our kitchen unit cleaned every 4 months as it sits directly above our cooktop.

• Hoses get blown out and outdoor units cleaned and maintained on the same schedule.

• Any leak or issue gets addressed immediately. Units can freeze up if the temperature is set too low, so we keep everything between 21°C and 24°C. On the dry setting, the unit adjusts itself accordingly. This is probably the best advice that Nielsen gave us.

We installed window tinting. We got a quote from a window professional, and they were able to do the job the same day they came to measure. It took two full days for our house. We have a lot of windows (our house is 4 bedroom/3.5 baths), including floor-to-ceiling glass in our upstairs landing. Total cost: $18,000 MXN.

We made curtains for every window ourselves, to keep costs down. Simple tension rods (from Parisina) and 3M plastic hooks (from Home Depot) did the trick. We chose light fabric for the bedrooms, light curtain fabric for the rest of the house, and roller shades for the room that gets hit hardest by afternoon sun. In my former life, I was a seamstress. Many locations in the city can make inexpensive curtains for you if you take them the fabric.

We covered our upstairs terrace with a malla sombra (mesh shade) — that space faces east and was making the adjacent bedroom noticeably hotter before we addressed it.

We run ceiling fans in every room, all day, and turn them off at night. We’ve also added tower fans in rooms where the A/C unit is awkwardly placed. This helps distribute cold air more evenly instead of leaving half a room cold and the other half warm. We had a couple of rooms with low ceilings that didn’t have fans. So we purchased inexpensive socket fans - see below. These come in several different colors, pricing, brands, etc. We love this easy fix.

We stopped using overhead lighting almost entirely. It adds a surprising amount of heat to a room. Table and floor lamps do the job with far less thermal load.

To Sum It Up

Reducing our CFE bill by 54% wasn’t one big fix. It was two years of small, compounding decisions: consulting a professional to understand how our A/C units actually work instead of just running them, blocking heat before it enters the house rather than fighting it once it’s inside, and paying close attention to where we sat relative to the DAC threshold every single billing cycle. None of it required a total renovation or solar panels. If you’re staring down a high CFE bill right now, start with small changes: fan use, curtains, A/C maintenance and build from there.

A real estate agent’s job isn’t just to show you houses, close the deal and hand you keys. It’s to help you build a life here, from a full 360-degree view of everything that comes with relocating. Too many agents are focused on one thing: commission. Learning who you are and how you actually want to live comes a distant second, if it comes at all.

Here’s how that translates: roughly 20% of foreign buyers end up regretting their first choice and relocate somewhere else (still in Mérida) within their first two years. The neighborhood wasn’t what they pictured. Their needs shifted once they actually arrived. They never slowed down long enough to figure out what their new life was supposed to look and feel like. This first decision, in and of itself, becomes one of the most expensive mistakes a new resident can make.

The most frustrating part? If their agent would have taken more time with them in the beginning, that percentage reduces significantly. Remember, real estate is an emotional purchase. Part of the agent’s job is to help balance the emotions with practicalities and lifestyle logistics.

The other classic trap is buying to renovate or buying presale. Both require constant vigilance and a genuinely trustworthy, thoroughly vetted contractor not a friend of a friend. Or the classic, “I know a guy.” If buying to renovate or in presale, make sure you have someone you trust to keep watch for you. This is worth the extra money to hire someone.

After seven years here (and a previous stint in the Riviera Maya back in 2006–2007), I keep watching people make the same mistakes, over and over. So if you’re tempted to DIY this process just STOP. Right now. DIY works out sometimes. Most of the time, it doesn’t. By the time you realize it isn’t working, you’re already deep into deposits or managing a remodel that won’t end.

Moving to Mexico had been a dream of mine since 2006. I knew I’d have to wait until the right time. My sons were still in school. I was growing a business. After my divorce in 2010, my emotional and mental health had to come first. So I kept the dream alive by setting an intention: I would move when the time was right. I trusted that it would come. Although my own plan included something I never expected: a year without a home.

I believe we all need something to hope for. Whether a dream comes true or not, it’s the hoping that keeps us going.

Why I Couldn’t Wait Any Longer

The American way is to work hard while we’re young. Then, we can retire and live the life we’ve dreamed of. But is that healthy? Is it balanced? So often, life throws a curveball that makes everything we’ve worked toward feel insignificant: a health diagnosis, a death, a sudden loss, a divorce, a (fill in the blank).

I watched this pattern play out again and again with my clients. They worked, saved, sacrificed, retired. On paper, they did everything right. Followed the rules, did the right thing. Right as they were finally ready to chase the dream, something happened. Illness. Family obligations. Death. Financial losses.

The dream stayed a dream.

It scared me because I recognized the same pattern in my own life. I’d make plans to move, and then something would happen. Eventually I realized: something is always going to happen. Big or small, that part is inevitable. The only real question is, “Will you let it stop you?”

Then came my wake-up call. I had cancer for the third time in 2017. A year later, my dad was diagnosed with cancer too. How much longer could we afford to wait? Would it take something even bigger to make us finally pull the trigger? He had always wanted to live in Costa Rica but kept putting it off.

We decided it wouldn’t. We started planning immediately and built a timeline. I still didn’t know exactly where I was moving. But starting the process was more important than the destination. My dad and I agreed to keep each other accountable and on track.

Narrowing Down Choices

I gave myself two years to find my spot and get everything in order: selling my house, finishing my car lease, transitioning my business, gathering medical records, letting go of belongings I’d spent a lifetime collecting.

I considered a few locations in the U.S. that I loved including Scottsdale, Arizona and New Orleans, Louisiana. I thought about Costa Rica. But Mexico always had a special place in my heart and a definite “pull.”

I decided to narrow my list down to five cities in Mexico:

• San Miguel de Allende

• San Luis Potosi

• Ajijic / Lake Chapala

• San Cristobal de las Casas

• Mérida

Because I heard the most about Mérida, I decided to start there. My intention was to visit each city on the list and then choose the best one. I would live in that city for at least two years to try it out. If it didn’t work, I would go to the next city on the list for two years, and so on until I found “my spot.”

Finding My Spot

In September of 2019, my research began with a trip to Mérida. Seven days, a long list of things to find out, zero tourism, all focus on what I need to know to start a life here. Three days in, I felt something I couldn’t explain but I’ll try to do my best. It was an energy, a feeling of being connected to the history, very grounded and stable. I didn’t know it at the time but the majority of foreigners who decide to live here feel “it” too. You feel “it” or you don’t. There’s no right or wrong. It’s a feeling that’s indescribable but when you feel “it” you know.

Santa Lucía Park became one of my favorite spots in Centro. I visited frequently and one afternoon, I felt a call to stand under the two large trees in the middle of the park.

I’d like to say that I didn’t question it, but I did. When my inside voice is that loud it takes me off-guard and takes me some time to process. When I didn’t act on the advice, I started hearing the message louder and clearer. “MOVE AS SOON AS YOU CAN,” it said. Ok, understood and I’m on it!

And then everything just . . . aligned. The transition from Dallas to Mérida came together in three months.

My two year plan shortened into months. I decided I would move on Christmas Day as a gift to myself. What a significant day to begin my new life. That meant I had about three months to execute the logistics plan I put together. For me, this was the start to the process. Organize the logistics, find the spot, execute the plan: selling, transferring, donating, and even trashing things I no longer needed. I was on my way but wasn’t prepared for what came after my move.

The Shut Down That Shut Down The World

Just three months after my move, the Mérida I’d fallen in love with became another city entirely. My world turned upside down along with it. A new country, a new culture, a new language: none of it had prepared me for a global pandemic.

Carefully made plans unravelled rapidly. Airbnb reservations were cancelled. Mental and emotional decisions overtook logical ones. Admittedly, I would have been completely lost without Angel who I met only four days after I arrived. Guess where? Yes, in Santa Lucia Park working as a waiter at a restaurant I’d eaten at several times during my research trip. Another unexpected gift from the Universe sent as a sign I was in the right place at the right time in my “spot.”

My intention was to rent in several different neighborhoods in Centro for at least a year before signing a long-term lease. But with the new restrictions, Airbnb cancellations were inevitable. I was stuck and decided to go ahead and sign a long-term rental contract due to the situation. Necessary at the time but not part of the plan.

This became my first introduction to how rapidly things change in Mexico often without any advance warning or notice.

Finding stability became the priority at any cost

Let’s recap:

• Three months after my research trip, I moved to Mérida.

• Four days after I moved, I met Angel.

• Three months after I moved, Covid shut the city down.

• Four months after I moved and four houses later, I became seriously ill. In fact, the doctor here couldn’t figure out what was wrong. With all the changes in a short amount of time, I think my body was showing me how important it was to find a stable place to acclimate.

180 degree changes in all aspects of my life were catching up to me. I felt the full weight of what it means to live without a home of my own.

I never once worried about this before. I’d always been proud of how resilient and adaptable I was. Traveling solo, I’d been to many destinations. I lived in London and the Riviera Maya without a second thought. But the instability of the world, layered on top of the unknowns of my own life, was more than I’d planned for.

“Home is where the heart is” is a lovely sentiment, but my heart being in Mérida wasn’t enough to counteract the anxiety of constantly shifting living situations and COVID regulations.

The Cost of a Year Without a Home

Looking back, a few things made that year so hard:

• I had no soft place to land.

• My safe zone didn’t exist.

• Nothing about the year felt stable, because nothing about the world was stable.

• I didn’t have my own things around me.

• Constantly adjusting to new furniture, new lighting, new bedding, new kitchens wore me down.

• My sense of adventure and curiosity started to dull.

Finding My Footing

Fortunately, I met a wonderful man and he became the one steady, stable force in my life that first year and beyond. He was patient through every emotional high and low. He was simply present, in a way I badly needed. He helped me navigate the maze of COVID rules and regulations that would keep shifting until the city was completely open 18 months later. We married in October 2021.

Once stabilized with Angel’s help, I found a wonderful integrative medicine doctor in Dallas. She recommended that I move once again to an area that was outside of the city center and “get off the ground.” There were many things I wasn’t used to being in a city center and not just the traffic and activity. Lots to adapt to after moving that I didn’t know, didn’t anticipate, and couldn’t foresee.

After eight months and seven moves, we decided to stay in The North in Montes de Ame neighborhood. We loved the area, the walkability, the close conveniences, and it felt good. We decided we would sign a long-term lease at the end of November and see how it went.

One Year Later

We celebrated Christmas in our new home in 2020. One year later, I had finally found stability in more areas of my life than I knew were possible including getting married (which both Angel and said we would never do - him for the first time, me for the second time).

One thing I was adamant about was buying my own things. I brought things in suitcases with me on the airplane so I basically needed to start from scratch. But this was a great thing.

I was exhausted from uncomfortable furniture, a kitchen that wasn’t fully equipped, and not being able to fully “nest.” I’m sure you know that feeling. I bought my own furniture. I decorated the house how I wanted to. Little by little, I began to relax, and settle in. Most importantly, my health had stabilized along with my life.

That year without a home taught me more patience than I thought I had, and the kind of fortitude that only comes from accepting that everything is temporary — that change is the one true constant.

• I want to live like a local, in a local neighborhood.

• I want to be within walking distance to a market.

• I don’t want to be in an area full of foreigners.

I wanted all of it too. I hate to burst your bubble. It may not be possible.

Where This Started

I first learned about Mérida while living and working in Riviera Maya. I lived in the prestigious gated community of Puerto Aventuras between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It’s the only gated community there with its own private marina and beach access. The best of both worlds. A little haven most people don’t even know exists.

It had its own restaurants, a lovely market, a grocery store, shopping, swim-with-the-dolphins excursions. To say the least, it was enchanting. There was only one hotel. I was introduced to the concept of day passes and I was hooked. Spend the day at a 4-star hotel with towel service, great food, and cute waiters for $25 usd? I’m all in.

I’d moved down with a real estate friend from Houston, and we shared a penthouse apartment near the hotel. Fifth floor, no elevator, but a gorgeous upstairs terrace overlooking the beach and ocean. The living area faced the marina; the bedrooms faced the water. It was luxurious. Rent was $800 USD, and the only catch was we couldn’t run the A/C. Not a big ask because it was really expensive then and even now; comparable to U.S. pricing.

At that time, I lived in a local neighborhood and had all the amenities. And that’s exactly what people misunderstand about wanting to “live like a local.” The difference is the amenities. In context, the amenities to locals are basics for us. We expect them but here they are “extras.”

Let’s look at some what we would call basics, but that locals call extras:

• water pressure

• hot water

• high-speed internet

• mosquito screens

• air conditioning in all rooms (bedrooms and living areas)

And then we get to the furnishings:

• bed with side table and reading lamps

• dining table and chairs

• sofa, coffee table, end tables, and lamps

I’m exaggerating a little. But not by much. And underneath the exaggeration is a real expectation people carry without realizing it: that everything will be the same. It won’t. You’re in a foreign country, with different rules, a different culture and every single thing, bar none, is different.

• Storage? Little to none.

• Closets? Maybe, maybe not.

• A/C in every room? Possible, not guaranteed.

• Free from flooding? Depends on the street and how well it’s maintained.

The Walking Distance Myth

• Mejorada was the location of Mérida’s very first hospital. It was built in 1562 decades before the church.

• At the end of the 19th century, the neighborhood became home to the city’s first railway station (April 1, 1875).

• The very first rail spike for the first major railway on the Yucatán Peninsula was driven into the ground at the Plaza de La Mejorada in 1870.

This was the start of the The Mérida to Progreso railway line. Built primarily to transport bales of henequen fiber called green gold from plantations to the port of Progreso for export. La Plancha became the northern expansion of the Plaza de La Mejorada rail infrastructure to handle the massive boom in henequen traffic.

The Evolution from Plaza to Grand Station

The 1875 Mérida-Progreso line started at Mejorada. The small station quickly ran out of physical space as the region’s rail network exploded. In 1905, the newly consolidated Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatán built a massive central station and rail yard just a few blocks north on a large expanse of flat land nicknamed “La Plancha.”

Multiple rail tracks literally ran out of the old Mejorada station courtyard and continued north through city blocks. It then expanded into the vast network of warehouses and maintenance shops at La Plancha.

Today, the tracks are gone, and this historic rail corridor has been completely transformed into Gran Parque de La Plancha. Opened in November of 2023, this 55-hectare rail yard is now a massive park featuring the Yucatán Railroad Museum, an amphitheater, a lake, and a station for the new IE-TRAM electric bus system.

The old station building at now serves as the UADY Architecture School, preserving its classic Porfirian industrial facade (see below).

Mejorada Church: One of the City’s Oldest Cúpulas

One of the oldest standing buildings in Mérida, the Mejorada Church dates to the 17th century. The church was dedicated on January 22, 1640, to “Nuestra Señora del Tránsito de la Mejorada” or Our Lady of the Transit of Mejorada. The convent wasn’t finished until 1694, more than fifty years later.

The church features a cúpula; one of the very first domes of its kind on the Yucatán Peninsula. Many churches’ original religious installations and artifacts disappeared or were destroyed during the Caste War (1847-1915).

Like many early Spanish colonial structures in the Yucatán peninsula, much of the raw limestone used to build the Mejorada church was salvaged from nearby, dismantled Maya temples. You will see smooth, precisely cut limestone ashlar blocks (sillería) mixed with rougher fieldstones. In some places, subtle geometric patterns, glyph carvings, or chiseled lines from original Maya stonework remain visible embedded in the church walls.

The Convent: From Franciscan Cloister to Architecture School

The adjoining convent, completed in 1694, was one of only two the Franciscans built in Mérida. The other, the Convento de la Asunción, no longer exists. After restoration and adaptation, the cloister today houses the Facultad de Arquitectura of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY). The same colonial arches and patios that once sheltered friars now shelter architecture students sketching floor plans. It’s a beautiful use of the old historical building providing a second act for adaptive reuse.

Franciscan Hospital to Army Barracks to Children’s Cultural Center

The building beside the church has worn several hats. It began life as a Franciscan hospital. In 1821, it was closed and handed over to the military. From that point, was known as the Cuartel de Dragones or the Dragoons’ Barracks, home to cavalry and infantry troops stationed in Mérida.

During a 1992 remodeling of the old barracks, workers made a sobering discovery. Three mass graves containing the remains of at least ten people. Archaeological research found them to be the soldiers of the Dragoons Regiment. These soldiers died of cholera in 1853 during the tensions of the Caste War.

Today the same building is a much happier place: the headquarters of the Centro Cultural del Niño Yucateco (CECUNY), a children’s cultural center.

Mérida's Colonial Arches

Right beside the old barracks stands two large yellow arches. Around 1690, Governor General Juan José de la Bárcena ordered the construction of a grand city wall and gated entry system.

The project was meant to:

• protect the Spanish elite from pirate attacks along the coast

• control/separate the indigenous populations living in the outer barrios from entering the city center

Remembering Boy Heroes

In the park, look for a large bronze sculpture honoring the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec. These boy heroes were six Mexican military cadets, aged 13 to 19, killed defending Mexico City during the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. This was one of the final major battles of the Mexican–American War. Local youth still use the surrounding open space for dance, band, and parade practice, giving the monument an unexpectedly lively backdrop.

Chapultepec Castle, built in the 18th century, served as Mexico’s Military Academy. When U.S. forces advanced on the capital, General Nicolás Bravo was tasked with defending it. Of the roughly 2,000 soldiers the defense called for, Santa Anna could commit only 832, most of them National Guard rather than regular army.

The outnumbered defenders held out for about two hours before Bravo ordered a retreat. Six cadets refused to fall back and fought to their deaths. Legend says that the last of them, Juan Escutia, leapt from the castle roof wrapped in the Mexican flag rather than let it fall into enemy hands. An unidentified U.S. officer’s later account noted that close to 100 cadets between the ages of 10 and 19 were among the prisoners taken when the castle fell.

Walking on History: Red Brick Streets

The streets around Mejorada’s park are among the best-preserved brickwork left in the city. These cobblestoned streets called “adoquín francés” or French cobblestone didn’t come from France at all. Records of these bricks arriving in Mérida date back to at least 1889. The city’s major paving projects took place in the early 1900s. The bricks are plainly stamped “Metropolitan Block, Canton, O.” They likely arrived the way so many building materials did in that era: as ballast in ships from Canton, Ohio. Unloaded in Yucatán, the ships left loaded with henequen for export.

These century-old bricks are also, fittingly, part of the neighborhood’s current revival. After years of wear, Mérida’s city government has been working with INAH (Mexico’s national anthropology and history institute) on a major maintenance and restoration project for the brick streets of La Ermita, Mejorada, and Santa Lucía.

Museo de la Canción Yucateca: A Home for Trova

Tucked into a beautiful teal eclectic-neoclassical building on Calle 57 is the Museo de la Canción Yucateca. Originally the building was a girls’ school in 1909. Decades later is it the keeper of Yucatán’s most beloved musical tradition, Trova.

The museum opened its doors on November 5, 1978. Founded by Rosario Cáceres Baqueiro de Manzanilla, granddaughter of Cirilo Baqueiro Preve, known as “Chan-Cil.” He is remembered as one of the founding fathers of Yucatecan trova. The museum’s founding mission was to rescue, preserve, and share the songs written, composed, and performed by Yucatecans across generations.

Today it stands as the only museum in Mexico dedicated exclusively to the genre of Trova Yucateca.

Trova traces back to Cuba, specifically to the Oriente province, around Santiago de Cuba, in the second half of the 19th century. It developed as sung poetry accompanied by guitar. From there it spread to several Latin American countries, including Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Mexico.

Yucatán’s version grew out of close, ongoing contact with Cuba rather than a single import. Cuba’s proximity to the peninsula created a close relationship and a back-and-forth exchange of influences that shaped many of the forms and rhythms favored by Yucatán’s songwriters and guitarists.

Havana theatrical companies frequently brought danzones, guarachas, and rumbas. Cuban musicians who found a warm reception in Mérida ended up settling here, deepening the Caribbean imprint. Trova yucateca itself crystallized as its own genre in the late 19th/early 20th century, blending that Cuban influence (bolero, habanera, clave) with Colombian bambuco and local elements. It flowered in Mérida between roughly 1900 and 1940, reaching its golden age in the 1920s.

The museum keeps trova alive with regular performances outside on an open-air stage with acoustic shell. Angel and I have been several times and are moved each time we attend.

• Noche Romántica is the second Wednesday of the month at 8:30 pm. This is an evening of trova, Yucatán’s traditional romantic music.

• Recordando a los Compositores is the last Wednesday of the month at 8:30 pm. This is a tribute to the Yucatecan songwriters born that month.

Where to Eat & Sleep in Mejorada

The neighborhood’s quiet colonial bones now share the area with a great dining and hospitality scene. You’ll also find pop-up markets at any given time including one of the best plant markets in the city.

• Distrito Mejorada — A new city-backed initiative (launched June 2026) that turns Calle 50-A into a pedestrian corridor Thursday–Sunday, with live music, artisan bazaars, book stalls, and an outdoor art market rotating through the week.

• Patio Petanca — A backyard-vibe courtyard bar and restaurant behind an unassuming door, known for its steak burritos, cocktails, and lawn games like pétanque.

Pancho Maíz made the Michelin list, receiving a Bib Gourmand award and a selection in the inaugural Michelin Guide for Yucatán. Additionally, chef and owner Xóchitl Valdés won the Young Chef Award.

No. You’d be an immigrant. Maybe, depending on who’s talking, something worse.

But let’s flip it around. A retiree from Ohio moves to Mérida, and suddenly the word expat softens the landing.

• Lifestyle change.

• Adventure.

• “Expat life.”

  

Same act. Same border crossed in the opposite direction. It is wildly different terminology with a vastly different social weight attached to it. That gap isn’t an accident of language. It’s the whole story.

The purpose of writing this isn’t to assign guilt, discriminate, or act out of bias. It’s to shed light on a deeply touchy topic and educate. The way certain terms are used, whether to elevate the status of foreign residents or out of sheer ignorance, (I apologize but I need to wake some of you up somehow) is nothing short of disrespectful and entitled.

Locals recognize it, and they have become far more vocal about it in recent years. Times are changing, and it’s our responsibility to change with them by becoming more aware of our actions and the language we use.

If we, and I’m using the collective “we” as foreign residents, would simply learn the local culture, this wouldn’t be an issue at all. Believe me, I get it. When I first arrived, I was so excited that I forgot the fundamental rule of learning the culture first and foremost. It’s a mistake almost all of us make. But it can be remedied.

Right now, the cultural divide is widening due to a massive disconnect between how newcomers arrive, how they behave, and how host communities view them.

“Expat” vs. “Immigrant”: A Tale of Two Labels

Anytime you bring up “expat vs. immigrant” on social media, it instantly devolves into one of the most toxic arguments on the internet. You don’t even want to read the comment sections. Seriously.

To understand why locals view the word “expat” with growing disdain, we have to look at how its meaning has been distorted over centuries:

• 18th Century: Derived from Latin of ex meaning “out of” and patria meaning “native land.” The original term expatriate meant to be legally banished or exiled.

• Mid-20th Century: Post-WWII, it shifted to describe corporate or diplomatic professionals sent abroad on short-term, employer-funded contracts with every intention of returning home.

• Today: It has broadened to include digital nomads, retirees, and remote workers. In practice, “expat” has become a socioeconomic class designation.

Additionally, “expat” quietly performs social work that dictionaries don’t admit to. It offers Western migrants a “financial leg up” for the exact same act of moving abroad that pushes down people from poorer countries, labeling them as “immigrants.”

Locals notice. Of course they do. When they push back, it isn’t because they’re overly touchy about semantics. It’s because the word has quietly become shorthand for: “I’m entitled and different from the immigrants living in my home country, most of whom we look down on.”

Mosquitoes live almost everywhere on Earth. Maybe not Antarctica. In humid, sub-tropical places, they thrive. And mosquitoes in Mérida are no exception. In this article, I’ll walk you through everything I’ve learned after years of living here, including:

• When mosquito season in Mérida actually peaks

• The best mosquito repellent options (traditional and natural)

• What to wear during the day and night

• How to protect your home

• Candles, coils, incense, and electronic devices

• After-care for bites that do slip through

• How to eliminate breeding grounds around your property

Let’s jump in, because the less time you spend swatting, the more time you have to enjoy this gorgeous city.

When is Mosquito Season in Mérida?

Humidity and rain drive the mosquito population. So it makes sense that mosquitoes in Mérida are most prevalent between April and November.

During the rainy season, things get noticeably worse from June to October. September is the peak. It’s our rainiest month of the year, and the mosquito population reflects that.

Because the Yucatán Peninsula is sub-tropical, you’ll see mosquitoes swarming, hovering, and hunting for their next meal throughout most of the year. The good news is that late fall and winter bring real relief and the population drops significantly. The catch? They don’t vanish entirely.

One more thing worth knowing: mosquitoes in Mérida are most active after dusk, but female mosquitoes will bite at any hour of the day if they’re hungry enough.

What Attracts Mosquitoes?

Nectar is the primary food source for most mosquitoes. But females need blood, animal or human, to get the nutrients required to produce eggs. That’s why only females bite.

They find us using antennae that detect carbon dioxide from our breath and the compounds in our sweat. And if you’ve ever wondered why some people get devoured while others sit untouched at the same dinner table, there’s a reason. Studies suggest blood type, skin bacteria, genetics, and even diet can all make you more (or less) attractive to mosquitoes.

For the record, I’m apparently delicious.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Mérida Mexico

For most visitors and residents, mosquito bites here are an annoyance rather than a health threat. The risk of disease is low but it’s real, and worth being aware of.

When a mosquito bites, it mixes your blood with saliva, which is how diseases can transfer. The mosquito-borne illnesses present in this region include:

• Dengue Fever

• Zika Virus

• Malaria (very low risk)

• Yellow Fever

• Chikungunya

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends that pregnant women and their partners take extra precautions against Zika when traveling to Mexico.

Dengue fever in Yucatán is also worth watching for, especially in jungle and mangrove areas outside the city.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

• Nausea and vomiting

• Rash

• Aches and pains: muscle, joint, or bone

• Pain behind the eyes

Symptoms of Zika Virus

• Rash and itching

• Fever

• Headache

• Joint pain (often in small joints of the hands and feet)

• Muscle pain

• Conjunctivitis (red eyes)

• Lower back pain

7 Ways to Deal with Mosquitoes in Mérida

1. Choose the Right Mosquito Repellent

The most reliable way to avoid bites is repellent on your skin.

• Traditional synthetics using DEET as the active ingredient

• Eco-friendly options

• Natural oils like citronella, eucalyptus, and cedar

I’ve tested all of them and use them for different types of outings. I don’t use DEET all the time due to the active ingredient. Most work reasonably well. But I’m a mosquito magnet and still need to reapply constantly.

After my years here and trial and error, my personal winner is an odd one: Vicks VapoRub.

Yes, really. I use this just like lotion during rainy season. The secret is the cedarleaf oil which is a natural insect repellent. I reapply every couple of hours for maximum protection. For heavier protection (archaeological sites, jungle excursions), I use a 50% DEET spray on both skin and clothing.

Local tip: DEET is non-negotiable and a MUST use if you are going to anywhere with vegetation, jungle, etc.

Amy’s comments: Why don’t I use just ONE “all-in-one” spray? I have pretty sensitive skin. I’ve found the green bottle of OFF with DEET has some kind of chemical that doesn’t agree with my system. I don’t think it’s neccessary OR healthy to only use full strength DEET all the time. Also, many visitor’s don’t know about the sand flies at the beaches. You may not be a mosquito magnet but sand flies do not discriminate.

Insider tip: I do NOT buy these in bulk nor do I buy a large spray bottle. The spray bottles tend to leak and become very sticky. We keep the aerosol in the glove compartment and the Repel in a plastic bag in our emergency kit in the car.

2. Dress Strategically to Avoid Mosquito Bites

During the hottest part of the day, mosquitoes aren’t as active. So my rule is: dress for the weather first, then adjust for mosquitoes.

After dusk, consider long sleeves, loose pants, and closed shoes. Mosquitoes tend to target the areas with the least body hair such as feet, ankles, ears, neck. They’ll even bite through thin fabric, so loose is better than tight.

If you’re heading to an archaeological site or a nature tour, dress accordingly and spray your clothing in addition to your skin. For jungle or wooded areas, a hat with a mosquito net isn’t overkill it’s just smart.

Local tip: Mosquitoes are highly attracted to black, red, orange, and cyan (blue-green). This preference is triggered after they detect carbon dioxide (which we exhale); your skin then registers as a strong red-orange signal to them, regardless of your actual complexion.

To minimize your chances of being bitten, avoid dark and bold colors. Instead, opt for light, neutral, and cool-toned clothing like white, green, blue, and purple, which mosquitoes generally ignore and perceive as threatening.

3. Protect Your Windows and Doors

One of the best things about living in Mérida is the cross-breeze. But an open door is an open invitation to every mosquito on the block.

If your home has screens, use them religiously. If it doesn’t, install them anywhere you plan to leave a door or window open. It’s one of the single highest-return investments you can make in your comfort here.

Local tip: Local vendors (carpenters or aluminum fabricators) can build custom screens for Mérida’s older colonial doors and windows at a very reasonable price.

4. Candles, Coils, and Incense

Citronella is the best-known mosquito-repellent ingredient because mosquitoes hate the smell. Sandalwood incense is another favorite that bothers them. You’ll find both easily at local mercados and home goods stores.

A word of caution: read the directions carefully. Some coils are labeled for outdoor use only, so check before burning indoors.

Local tip: During the peak of rainy season, I’ll burn citronella candles, lavender-scented coils, and sandalwood incense inside. I’m a magnet, I’m extra motivated, and I’m also careful not to overdo it.

Amy’s comments: when using ANY of these products, the aromas are very strong. Make sure you have good/great ventilation AND that you do not burn the candles or coils too long IF you are using them inside. They are NOT recommended for inside use but sometimes it was necessary for me. I wouldn’t burn the candle or coil for more than 20 minutes at a time with my windows open that had mosquito screens, of course. If you are in a regular room and can’t open windows, stick to the incense only.

5. Electronic Mosquito Devices

Options include:

• Plug-in diffusers (oil-based or ultrasonic)

• Hanging outdoor units for INDOOR / OUTDOOR

• Electric fly swatters that look like tennis rackets

That last one is especially popular here, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t work brilliantly!

Local tip: We have several small zappers around the inside of the house for extra protection. They work extremely well and we can’t do without them when the sneakly little guys slip inside.

📌PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS

• Trampa para Insectos (These were recommended when I first moved here but I wasn’t a fan. I would never plug them in anywhere except close to the floor and they were extremely messy at that time.)

• Raid Repelente (Another recommendation that works great, so I’m told. I’m not a fan of so many chemicals in the house so….)

• Glückluz Lámpara Interior Exterior* (make sure the one you select is for indoor/outdoor use)

• Raqueta Mosquitos (you can buy from Amazon OR they are sold everywhere including on the street corners - we’ve gone through 1/2 dozen of these)

• Matamoscas eléctrico (this would be my next purchase 2-1 raquet)
  

Amy’s comments: *we purchased 3 of these from Amazon. Then we decided we wanted a couple more and went to ACE Hardware on Av. Tecnologico. The ones we bought ended up not working and we had to return them. I try to buy local as much as possible but sometimes it’s just not possible.

6. After-Care Products for Itchy Bites

Most people will get bitten eventually. Reactions range from a small itchy bump to angry blisters. It varies enormously by person.

For mild bites, look for products with bicarbonate of soda as the main ingredient, or ask your pharmacist for a recommendation. Local pharmacies are helpful and most staff speak at least some English.

If you develop large blisters or a severe reaction, see a doctor. It’s possible to be allergic to mosquito bites, and the species here are different from what you may be used to in the U.S. or Canada.

Local tip: I carry a small roll-on of essential oil blend in my bag to calm the itch and swelling. Hand sanitizer also takes the sting out in a pinch.

Amy’s comments: Essential Oil Rollers (my favorites for the great aroma and the right ingredients to calm itcy skin without attracting more mosquitoes). If you are a Bach Flower Essence lover, Rescue Remedy is another great option.

7. Eliminate Breeding Grounds

Mosquitoes need standing water to breed. It’s that simple. To cut down the population around your home:

• Check garden ponds, fountains, and planter saucers weekly

• Turn over buckets, watering cans, and empty containers

• Watch laundry areas and utility sinks indoors

• Clean rooftop drains (a common oversight in Centro homes)

Local tip: Did you know that even a bottle cap of stagnant water can host larvae? That fountain in your colonial patio looks gorgeous. But if it’s not running, it’s a nursery. Add some chlorine or chlorox.

Should You Use DEET?

DEET was developed in the 1940s by the USDA for the U.S. military and has been commercially available since 1957. It works by interfering with a mosquito’s ability to detect sweat and breath. Some researchers say these smell terrible to them.

When used according to the directions, DEET has a strong safety record and remains one of the most effective repellents on the market.

Local tip: If you have concerns, I’d encourage you to read up and decide for yourself. I use it for high-exposure situations (jungle, cenotes, archaeological ruins) and reach for gentler options day-to-day.

Final Thoughts on Mosquitoes in Mérida

Mosquitoes in Mérida are a fact of life from April through November, with September as the worst stretch. By late October, numbers drop noticeably, though they never fully disappear.

If you’re especially worried about bites or mosquito-borne illness, plan your visit between December and March. It’s also our most pleasant weather, so it’s a win-win.

My quick checklist for anyone visiting or settling in:

• Cover arms and legs with loose clothing after dusk

• Avoid known swarm areas (especially near standing water)

• Reapply repellent frequently

• Keep a 50% DEET product on hand for heavy exposure

• Use screens; keep doors and windows protected

• Always wear shoes outdoors

I’ve become so accustomed to mosquito spray that a travel-sized bottle lives permanently in my purse. It’s a small trade for the daily joy of living in the beautiful city I call home.

How Mérida Is Laid Out

The first thing to understand about the neighborhoods in Mérida is that the city is built on a grid, with mostly numbered streets.

A few orientation points:

• Numbered streets make up the bulk of the grid. Even numbers run north and south. Odd numbers run east and west.

• Larger avenues are named such as Avenida Cupules, Avenida Itzaes, or Avenida Colón.

• Paseo de Montejo is the main north–south boulevard cutting through the city center. It becomes the Prolongacion Montejo as you travel north from the Monumento a la Patria.

• Circuito Colonias is the loop that circles the middle of the city.

• The Periférico is the loop highway that circles the outside city.

Spend a few minutes with a map and you’ll start to see how the colonias (traditional neighborhoods) and fraccionamientos (planned subdivisions) fit together.

Colonias vs. Fraccionamientos: A Quick Primer

Most colonias have a church and a park at their heart. Very often, the church, neighborhood, and park all share the same name. Look at the street signs to figure out which colonia you’re in; the name is usually right under the street number or name.

A fraccionamiento, on the other hand, is a planned development more like a type of subdivision. Similar sized lots, some houses look very similar, avenues and streets are definitely in grid-form.

As you head to The North, you’ll notice the architecture and the rhythm shift dramatically. We call it “anywhere U.S.A.” due to the car dealerships, big box stores, and the way businesses are organized throughout the area.

All neighborhoods in Mérida have their charm; they just tell different stories.

The Heartbeat: Plaza Grande and Centro

All the neighborhoods in Mérida radiate out from one spot. This is the historic city center, anchored by Plaza Grande and the Catedral de San Ildefonso.

The buildings surrounding the plaza, sometimes referred to as the Zócalo, include:

• Catedral de San Ildefonso

• Palacio de Gobierno (Governor’s Palace)

• Casa Montejo

• MACAY Museum

• Olimpo Cultural Center

• The Ayuntamiento (City Hall)

Plaza Grande is where you go to feel the pulse of the city. People gather to read the paper, get a shoeshine, feed the pigeons, sing, dance, sell trinkets, or just sit on a confidente bench and people-watch. There are coffee shops, restaurants, newsstands, and shops on every side.

Features of Plaza Grande

Pok Ta Pok (Mayan Ball Game): In front of the Cathedral. A reenactment of the ancient Maya ball game, full of ceremony and mysticism.

Mérida en Domingo: Calle 60, between Plaza Grande and Parque Santa Lucía. Sunday-carnival energy with food stalls, artisans, performers, and folkloric dance.

Vaquería Dancing: Palacio Municipal, Plaza Grande. A colorful tradition from the colonial era, when the wives of local cowboys (vaqueros) would lead their husbands through elaborate dances in their finest dresses.

Video Mapping on Casa Montejo: A high-tech light-and-sound show that uses the facade itself as a canvas for the region’s history.

The Champs-Élysées of Mérida: Paseo de Montejo

Named for Francisco de Montejo, the Spanish conquistador who founded Mérida in 1542, Paseo de Montejo is the grand boulevard running north–south through the city. Think Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City or the Champs-Élysées in Paris but with palm trees, mansions, monuments, and that unmistakable European influence.

The Paseo officially begins at Calle 47 (an area called the Remate) and runs north to the Monumento a la Patria at Calle 27A. Beyond that, it continues as Prolongación Montejo all the way out to the Periférico.

What’s Happening on the Paseo

Noches Mexicanas: At the Remate, every Saturday night. Artisans, food vendors, music, and dancing.

BiciRuta: Sunday mornings. The east side of Paseo de Montejo closes so people and pets can bike, walk, skate, and chat their way down the boulevard.

Artists on the Paseo: Sundays until early afternoon, on the east side of the Paseo. Artists, creatives, pop-up markets, and street food.

The Centro Colonias You’ll Want to Know

The action lives in Centro: restaurants, museums, galleries, churches, parks, tourism offices. If you want to walk among locals, expats, and visitors at any hour, these are the neighborhoods in Mérida to wander:

Santa Lucía · Santa Ana · Santiago · San Juan · San Sebastián · Ermita · Mejorada · García Ginerés · Itzimná · Alemán · Jesús Carranza · Chen Bech

You’ll see colonial-style homes in every conceivable state of remodel. Some pristine, some still holding onto their century of patina. Let’s walk through them one at a time.

Santa Lucía

The colonia closest to Plaza Grande, Santa Lucía has played a starring role in Mérida’s story for centuries. Locals and visitors gather here for music, dance, and that particular Yucatecan magic. (Please pronounce Lucía: loo-see-ah. Many want to give it the Italian pronunciation: loo-chee-ah. This is wrong and locals won’t understand you.)

The obelisk in the park is dedicated to General Sebastián Molas, built in 1878. Its tip is intentionally broken; a symbol of his shortened life. The original inscription reads (in translation): “Here lie the remains of Colonel Sebastián Molas, Hero of the Caste War.”

What to catch in Santa Lucía:

• Yucatecan Serenade: Thursdays, 9 p.m. Live music, traditional costumes, and history under the open sky. This magical event started in 1965.

• Local Vendor Market: Sundays, 11 a.m. Hammocks, jewelry, food, traditional clothing.

Santa Ana — Calle 60 y Calle 47

You’ll spot Santa Ana’s church by its pyramidal spires and raised platform. Built atop a former Maya temple base. In the 1700s, this was the northernmost barrio of colonial Mérida, home to a large indigenous Maya and mulatto population.

Today, Santa Ana is one of Mérida’s growing art districts, with galleries, museums, and a charming neighborhood market full of cocinas económicas (small kitchens) serving traditional Yucatecan dishes and fresh juices. On the corner of the Santa Ana block where the church and market are located, Calle 47 connects to Paseo de Montejo.

The Christmas season is when Santa Ana truly shines with fairy lights forming a canopy across the plaza. The whole park feels enchanted and magical.

Santiago — Calle 72 y Calle 59

Santiago Church was founded in 1637, making it one of the oldest in the city. Three or four centuries ago, this was the colonia of the indigenous Maya, the artisans, and later the German community. Before Paseo de Montejo was built, Santiago was the place to live in Mérida.

The Santiago Market is one of my personal favorites with fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, flowers, juices made on the spot, a great butcher counter, cocinas económicas, a tortillería. The park itself has a beautiful fountain and plenty of shade.

Don’t miss:

• Remembranzas Musicales: Tuesdays, 8:30 p.m. Cha-cha, mambo, salsa, and big-band live music under the stars. One of the loveliest nights in the city.

San Juan — Calle 69 y Calle 62

San Juan’s church, four blocks south of Plaza Grande, is my personal favorite of all the churches in Mérida. The church dates to 1770, painted a magnificent yellow that practically glows at golden hour.

The San Juan arch marks one of the most significant historical gates to the city, rebuilt in 1790 under Governor Lucas de Gálvez y Montes de Oca (the same Lucas de Gálvez of Mérida’s largest market).

In the park, look for the bronze statue known as “the Little Black Girl of San Juan.” This is a tribute to the lantern bearers who once kept the peace, calling out: “It’s twelve o’clock, and all is serene.” (I love these little fragments of history. They’re the connection that makes a city feel alive.)

In 1810, the church’s chaplain, Don Vicente María Velásquez y Alvarado, became the spirit of the San Juanistas; credited with the very first stirrings of Mexican Independence.

Mark your calendar:

• Paseo de las Ánimas: During the last week of October and a vital part of Hanal Pixan (Día de los Muertos). The procession begins at the General Cemetery, passes through San Juan Park, with painted-skull faces, traditional Yucatecan dress, music, and food and continues until Parque La Plancha.

San Sebastián — Calle 75 y Calle 72

In colonial times, this was land granted to Francisco de Montejo’s son. To make room for Spanish estates, the indigenous Maya were relocated here. For centuries, San Sebastián housed Mérida’s poorest residents.

By the early 20th century, it had a tougher reputation known as Barrio Bravo, where young men from rival barrios fought one another. Local lore says the iron fence around the government offices on Calle 75 was forged from the muzzles of rifles repurposed after the Mexican Revolution. (True or not, it’s the kind of story you can’t help but be fascinated by.)

Today, San Sebastián is famous for its fairs. Booths, penny arcades, sometimes Ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds, there’s almost always something happening near the park.

The most popular event:

• Invocation of Our Lady of the Assumption: From August 3–15, you’ll find voladores (homemade bottle rockets), papier-mâché bulls, music, food, rides, and more.

La Ermita de Santa Isabel — Calle 66 y Calle 77

Often shortened to Ermita, this church was originally built in the 1700s as a wayfarer’s shrine. It’s dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje or Our Lady of the Good Journey, similar to Saint Christopher. The faithful would stop here to pray before setting off west to Campeche; a genuinely dangerous trip in those days.

Just across from the park, look for a wooden door tucked into a wall. Behind it is a small garden with native Yucatecan plants, ferns, flowers, and trees. Entry is free, but access is limited. If the door is open, peek in and ask. Some say the garden has ghosts.

The park itself was renovated recently with a new playground, fresh paint, and signage announding Ermita as a Barrio Magico (magic neighborhood). The streets around Ermita were just repaved with the original bricks. Here’s an interesing fact: most people will tell you those bricks came from Europe. They didn’t. They were manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio, and brought down.

Mejorada — Calle 50 y Calle 57

Mérida’s first hospital was built in Mejorada in 1562. Between 1688 and 1694, the Franciscans built two churches and convents here. One has disappeared; the other, La Mejorada, still stands today and now houses the UADY Faculty of Architecture. The adjoining building, the Dragon Cavalry, was once the headquarters of Mérida’s military garrison.

In the park, look for the bronze sculpture honoring the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec. There’s no neighborhood market but there are events, plant, and pop-up markets. Starting June 25, Distrito Mejorada is a vibrant pedestrian cultural and market hub. A must visit.

The massive Mercado Lucas de Gálvez is just a few blocks south, and you absolutely must visit it at least once. If you ever need to move furniture, head to the east side of the square. That’s where the men with trucks gather called “fletes.” On the west side, you’ll find the famous Los Almendros restaurant.

San Cristóbal — Calle 50 y Calle 69

In the 1540s, Francisco de Montejo set this area aside for the central Mexican allies who’d helped him conquer the Maya. San Cristóbal Church, also called Our Lady of Guadalupe, was the last church the Spaniards built in the Yucatán, with its foundation laid in 1757.

For centuries, getting to San Cristóbal meant climbing a steep hill on a street known as La Calle del Imposible (The Street of the Impossible). Five cultures have made this colonia home: Maya, Mexican, Spanish, Mestizo, and Arab. Lebanese immigrants in particular settled here, and at one point San Cristóbal reportedly resembled a small slice of Beirut or Damascus. Two staples of Yucatecan cuisine, the tortilla and the kibi, have roots in this neighborhood.

The church’s recessed shell archway echoes the Cathedral on Plaza Grande and the church in Umán. Climb the 129 steps of the interior stairway for a view of the neoclassical stone retablo. Above the entrance, the Latin inscription reads: “This is the House of God and the Gate of Heaven.”

Annual highlight:

• Virgin of Guadalupe Celebration: December 12.

García Ginerés — Calle 20 y Calle 23

Once the Hacienda Datil y Limón (Date and Lemon), this land was purchased by Don Joaquín García Ginerés, who lent it his name. The streets are wide and lined with houses spanning every aesthetic including art deco, neo-Maya, colonial, European, modern. Most are less than 50 years old.

The crown jewel is Parque de las Américas, designed in a striking Neo-Maya style (the same style you’ll see at the Monumento a la Patria). Monuments throughout the park honor every country in North and South America. There’s a large fountain, an open-air half-shell auditorium called the concha, the José Martí Cultural Center, and a fenced children’s play area.

Local rumor: there’s a cenote underneath the concha. The park hosts cultural events, concerts, and athletic celebrations on weekends. The neighborhood church, Our Lady of Fátima, is a quiet stunner featuring art deco architecture and gorgeous stained glass.

Saturday morning ritual:

• Slow Food Market: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Part of the global Slow Food network. Regional, organic, and built around culinary tradition. Arrive early as many vendors run out by noon. Bring your shopping bags.

Centenario — Avenida Itzaes y Calle 59

The area surrounding the Parque Zoológico del Centenario was originally the Barrio de Santa Catarina, part of greater Santiago. For a long time, it was a humble neighborhood; a place that sheltered those the city had pushed to its edges.

The zoo itself was built as part of a national project under Porfirio Díaz in the early 1960s, connecting to the adjacent Parque de la Paz. The streets behind the zoo remain genuine, working-class Mérida. There’s no central market, but several grocery stores nearby.

A Few More Neighborhoods in Mérida Worth Knowing

To round out our tour of the neighborhoods in Mérida, here are a handful more. They are short on space, big on character. (Zip codes included for easy navigation.)

Itzimná — Calle 15 y Calle 20 (97100). Originally a separate Maya village on Mérida’s northeastern edge. The colonial chapel here is a favorite for weddings and locals love its charm. Don’t miss the famous Wayan’e taco stand.

Alemán (Miguel Alemán) — Calle 21 y Calle 26 (97148). Built in 1957 as one of Mérida’s first planned developments, named for the sitting president. Federally funded for workers, and one of only two colonias in the city with a sewer system. The other one is Las Americas outside the Periferico. It was also the first neighborhood to get city water.

Jesús Carranza — Calle 41 y Calle 28 (97109). A small colonia tucked next to Itzimná and Alemán. Wednesday nights bring the tianguis which are traditional pre-Hispanic markets, the Mexican equivalent of a flea market.

Chen Bech — Calle 57 y Calle 42 (97000). The name means “bird’s nest.” Site of Yucatán’s original brewery, built in 1900, eventually sold to Grupo Modelo, and closed in 2002. The Chen Bech Mercado is one of the city’s best and is beloved by locals and expats alike, with a great tianguis.

Chuburná — Calle 29 y Calle 14 (97205). Not to be confused with the beach town, Chuburna PUERTO. The name means “house of yellow cotton.” It had its own government in the 1940s and was the largest ejido (community-owned land) in Mérida. The church is one of the city’s oldest, and the Sunday flea market is fantastic.

Chuminópolis — Calle 27 y Calle 20 (97158). The name combines “Chumin” (a nickname for Domingo) and “polis” (Greek for city). This was Mérida’s Chinese district, settled by railroad workers. Don’t miss Quinta el Olvido (House of Forgetting), built at the end of the 19th century by Rafael Quintero, the engineer who paved Mérida’s streets.

La Plancha — Calle 43 y Calle 48 (97000). If you follow Mérida’s development at all, you’ve heard about La Plancha. Since 1995, the city has been trying to convert this abandoned railway station into a major public park. It finally happened and it’s spectacular. Areas with play equipment, a skate park, pet area, man-made pond with fountain, performance shell with free events, and more.

“The North”: A Different Kind of Mérida

Since the second half of the twentieth century, Mérida has expanded dramatically northward. The North (as everyone calls it) is where you’ll find the most commercial growth, newer homes, shopping malls, hospitals, private schools, car dealerships, and global franchises.

Some of The North is genuinely affluent. This is where many of the city’s wealthier residents live. As you drive up Prolongación de Montejo from Centro, prepare for a bit of culture shock. Some longtime expats compare The North to the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, or to suburban Phoenix.

It’s also closer to the beach, about a 20-minute drive, which is a huge draw.

The Best Northern Neighborhoods in Mérida

Montecristo · Montebello · San Ramón Norte · Montes de Amé · Altabrisa · Benito Juárez Norte · Francisco de Montejo · Campestre

For shopping, look for Altabrisa, City Center, La Isla, Galerías, and The Harbor; all spread across The North.

Final Thoughts on the Neighborhoods in Mérida

What makes the neighborhoods in Mérida so special isn’t any single colonia or fraccionamiento. It’s the way they all coexist. Centuries-old churches a few blocks from sushi restaurants. Wrought-iron balconies next to glass-fronted galleries. Sunday flea markets a short drive from shopping malls.

Each of the neighborhoods in Mérida tells its own story, and the longer you stay, the more those stories layer on top of one another. Walk the streets. Talk to the locals. Sit in the parks. The boundaries between colonias are blurry. But the people who live in them will gladly tell you where one ends and the next begins. Usually with a great story to go along with the answer.

It was not my intention to become involved in real estate in Mérida. But, real estate is in my blood and in my spare time I watched the market. Listings, sales, amenities, locations, updates, and types of furnishings. As we began to work with clients, we educated ourselves on neighborhoods, walking distances to markets, and other lifestyle choices they were interested in. Cost of living, financial calculations, and budgets for snowbirding, renting part-time, and/or living here full time came into the equation.

That’s when things took an interesting turn. I’ve always been one to calibrate to client’s needs. I’ve never been a “Jill of all Trades” - that’s not possible. What is possible is to find the right people and resources to fullfill those needs. So, I began to vet vendors, professionals, and agents to refer to our clients. Long story short, after a few mishaps with a couple of the referral agents, I decided to bite the real estate bullet. And here I am.

Becoming familiar with property descriptions, furnishings, amenities, and layouts is all part of the education process. Part of my background was rehabbing houses and working with investors in Dallas. I look at houses with a little different perspective due to this. Considerations such as natural light, outdoor spaces, terraces, and even location on a street are all just as important as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. This is a city for indoor / outdoor living so it’s all part of the package.

The “When in Rome” Rule

Most locals don’t drink tap water, period. In fact, many don’t drink nearly enough water at all. Follow their lead on the source: stick to bottled water. The water in the Yucatan Peninsula flows through ancient limestone, making it incredibly “hard” (full of calcium). Beyond the risk of bacteria or heavy metals from old pipes, the mineral content alone can wreak havoc on your digestion if you aren’t used to it.

Daily Life: Brushing, Bathing, and Cooking

There is no need to be paranoid, but there is a need to be prepared.

• Brushing Teeth: Personally, I use tap water. However, if you have a sensitive stomach or are new to the environment, keep a bottle by the sink.

• Washing Produce: Don’t just rinse with tap water. Use Microdyne (a fruit/veg disinfectant found in every grocery store) to ensure your salads are safe.

• Cooking: I use bottled water for coffee and pasta. While boiling kills bacteria, it doesn’t remove the “funky” mineral smell that hard water can add to your food.

• Ice: Restaurants in Mérida almost exclusively use filtered water for ice. When in doubt, ask. At home? Make your own ice using bottled water or buy a bag of “Hielo Purificado” from OXXO.

The Garrafón System (2026 Logistics)

The most convenient and eco-friendly way to stay hydrated is the Garrafón (the big 20-liter blue jugs).

• Cost: Around $1.50 USD ($25-$30 MXN) for a 5-gallon refill.

• The Big 3: Crystal, Bonafont, and Agua Pura are the main providers. You have to swap your empty bottle for one from the same brand.

• Insider Tip: Buy an electronic water pump (around $11 USD). It attaches to the top of the jug and charges via USB. No more heavy lifting or awkward pouring.

A Warning About “Fancy” Resorts

You might think a 5-star resort is the safest place, but I’ve often found the opposite. Buffets are the real culprit. High-traffic handles on serving spoons are breeding grounds for germs.

• Insider Tip: Just because the water is filtered doesn’t mean the ice is. Be conscientious, wash your hands regularly, and avoid the “open” salad bar if you’re feeling unsure.

What if “Montezuma” Catches Up?

If you do get a stomach bug, don’t panic.

1. Rehydrate: Drink Gatorade or purchase rehydration salts (suero) from any Farmacia Guadalajara or Farmacia del Ahorro.

2. The BRAT Diet: Stick to Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.

3. Meds: Pepto Bismol or Imodium can help, but if things get worse, visit a local walk-in clinic—they are excellent and affordable.

My Secret Weapon: The Magic of Lime Juice

This is a trick I learned from a local years ago. Limes have high acidity that can help neutralize certain bacteria (like E. coli).

• The Routine: I squeeze lime juice on almost everything except pizza - but this is SUPER popular for locals. Maybe they know something we don’t.

• The Science: Studies suggest that citrus juice combined with sunlight can actually help kill harmful bacteria in water. It’s my “magic pill” for staying healthy while eating out.

P.S. Here is my “Tinaco Secret” for 2026: Even if you buy the most expensive bottled water, if you haven’t looked inside your Tinaco (rooftop tank), you’re missing the big picture. Dust, sediment, and even the occasional “uninvited guest” can get into those tanks.
