📖 What I read

The Wedding People by Alison Espach 🌙☕

The Wedding People is a gem of a book. I finally gave in and decided to read it, although I admit I didn’t know exactly what it was about, and the beginning almost made me quit. But after overcoming the initial surprise and reassuring myself that this wasn’t going to be an overly dramatic experience, I kept reading and slowly fell in love with it.

Phoebe arrives at the Cornwall Inn, in Newport, Rhode Island, during the week of Lila’s wedding, being the only guest who isn’t there for the celebration. Phoebe and Lila’s lives become intertwined; they are completely different, but soon enough, a strange kind of friendship begins to develop between them. Phoebe becomes entangled in Lila’s wedding preparations and gets to know all the “wedding people”, forming unexpected relationships that will change her outlook on life and make her reflect on her experiences, how she wants to live, and who she wants to become.

This is a very memorable novel: bittersweet and sad, but also funny and eccentric, about a very special woman. I just hope Phoebe is okay and living her dream life.

Good Material by Dolly Alderton 💌 🌙

Good Material is my first book by Dolly Alderton, and it was a total success. Although I’m not usually into books about breakups and I usually prefer female protagonists, this was a breath of fresh air. The novel is smart, witty, hilarious at times, and also deeply emotional and sincere. It’s been a long time since a book made me laugh without feeling overly silly. Without spoiling the story, which is, after all, rather simple, its greatest strength is how your opinion of Andy slowly changes as you keep reading and, especially, as you reach the final pages. I also loved that we got to see a glimpse of both perspectives.

📺 What I watched

The End of Oak Street (2026) 💥

This was just okay for me. The dinosaur sequences were fun and Anne Hathaway’s character was a badass, but the husband’s arc and writing felt flat. Spielberg comparisons are fair.

Bonjour tristesse (2024) 🌙

I watched this beautiful, slow-burn film after reading the book. It’s fairly faithful to the source material despite the contemporary setting. The acting shines and the scenery is stunning—though it doesn’t quite linger after the credits roll. Perfect for a calm, breezy summer evening.

Nine to Five (1980) ☕

A rewatch, and it still holds up beautifully. Three women fed up with their sexist boss orchestrate the perfect revenge. Surprisingly sharp for 1980—and for now. Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin are absolute gems.

Two weeks in August (s01) 🌙💌

A British take on The White Lotus: a group of friends in Greece, one kiss that changes everything. It’s soapy fun, lighter than the original but still entertaining.

My Brilliant Career (s01) 💌

My favorite from August. A gorgeous period piece about a young woman in rural Australia dreaming of becoming a writer while navigating two romantic interests. Sharp, witty, gorgeous, and utterly charming.

Patience (s01) 🔍

A new British crime procedural I fell for immediately. Patience is an autistic woman working in criminal records who begins assisting the York police. The cases are clever, and the friendship with DCI Metcalf is the heart of it.

🎞️ Under the Radar

Mrs. Harris goes to Paris (2022) ☕

I watched this after falling down a sewing and embroidery rabbit hole, and it was exactly the comfort I needed. A woman travels to Paris to buy her first Dior dress and rediscovers herself along the way. Perfect for watching with your mother or grandmother. Lesley Manville is flawless.

📖 What I read

The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson ☕

The Shampoo Effect was one of my biggest surprises of the year, a contemporary novel that hooked me from the very first page and never let go. It follows Caroline, a young woman who moves to Greenhead, Massachusetts, for a prestigious writers' program. There, she starts dating Van and is gradually drawn into his close-knit group of friends. We also get the perspectives of the women in the group: Bailey, Fran and Augusta, and become immersed in their families, relationships and everyday lives.

This isn't a novel driven by big twists or dramatic events. Instead, it's a story about ordinary life and the complexity of human relationships, and somehow it manages to make both utterly compelling. Much of that comes down to the author's writing, which is effortlessly engaging and so readable that before you know it, you're almost at the end. It's sharp, witty, emotionally honest and full of wonderfully flawed characters who feel incredibly real. I found myself rooting for every one of them and becoming invested in all their relationships. I absolutely loved this one.

Beach Read by Emily Henry 💌

Beach Read is a breezy romcom about January, a romance author struggling with writer's block who moves into her late father's secret love nest and unexpectedly reunites with Augustus, her former college rival and fellow writer, now living next door. They strike a deal to swap genres for the summer, and as they challenge each other creatively, their friendship gradually turns into something more complicated. The premise of two writers exchanging projects is fresh and engaging, and the book is an easy, entertaining and overall lovely read.

📺 What I watched

Private Benjamin (1980) ☕

A comedy about a young privileged woman who joins the US Army unexpectedly and slowly changes and finds herself. This was a nice little comedy, kind of a comfort watch that I had never seen before. I already know I’ll watch it again.

The First Wives Club (1996) ☕

A women’s revenge comedy about three wives who, after being left for much younger women, decide to make their ex-husbands’ lives hell. Kind of ridiculous but in a good way: I had lots of fun, and it’s perfect for a Saturday night with friends.

The Parent Trap (1998) ☕

A rewatch of one of my childhood movies. Lindsay Lohan absolutely shines portraying both twins, and although the story is ludicrous and the parents make the worst possible decisions, it works because of the actors and nostalgic factor.

Morning Glory (2010) ☕

Kind of weird because it’s a romcom without paying much attention to the rom: it focuses more on Rachel McAdams’ work ambitions instead. It’s entertaining, and Harrison Ford basically trained for Shrinking by doing this role. My 6th Diane Keaton movie this year.

Letters to Juliet (2010) 💌

A beautiful romance set in Italy, about a writer trying to help an older woman find her long lost love and falling in love herself along the way. The scenery is beautiful and it’s a delicate and touching story. I didn’t remember anything and I liked revisiting it.

Long Shot (2019) 💌

A lot of fun. It’s a bit long, but this improbable romance about a powerful politician and a chaotic writer works because of the script and Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen’s chemistry. It leans more into comedy than romance, more than you’d expect.

Harry Wild (s01-s05) 🔍☕

This cozy series has consumed my afternoons over the past few months: I’ve been watching religiously and having fun with the ridiculous mystery plots and the endearing relationship between Harry and her colleague Fergus. I already miss them.

The Vanishing Triangle (s01) 🔍

A classic crime drama based on a real case: a journalist connects a series of disappearances to her mother’s death years earlier. The mystery was engaging, and there was a lot of backstory to the main characters, which helped you connect to them.

Sterling Point (s01) ☕💌

A nostalgic yet modern YA drama set on a beautiful Canadian island. Annie discovers she has a secret family she never knew about, and after moving to the island, she makes new friends, falls in love, and investigates long-lost family secrets. This was cozy and perfect for binge-watching on a hot summer weekend.

🎞️ Under the Radar

Daytrippers (1996) ☕🌙

A married woman discovers a love letter written to her husband and, accompanied by her eccentric family, crosses the city in search of him to demand an explanation. I didn’t know this one: it’s weird, quirky, fun, and kind of comforting.

The Secrets We Hide by Karin Slaughter 🔍

The Secrets We Hide is the second book in the North Falls series, and it's definitely not one you can read as a standalone. While the central case is self-contained, the characters and several ongoing storylines continue directly from the first book. This time, Emmy Clifton takes on a difficult case: Allison Vickery, a former cop turned private investigator, has been murdered, and her teenage daughter has been left fighting for her life. Allison had been the victim of domestic abuse, but is her husband really the killer? Or is something far more sinister at play? With the help of her FBI sister, Jude, and Emmy's son, Cole, Emmy begins to unravel a complex web of lies and deceit that puts both her and her family in danger.

This was a tense, slow-burning, engrossing crime novel. Karin Slaughter is one of my favorite authors, and once again she excels at creating unforgettable characters and a layered, intricate plot where nothing is quite as it seems. New suspects and secrets emerge when you least expect them, constantly shifting the direction of the investigation. This isn't a fast-paced popcorn thriller, but a novel that slowly creeps under your skin and stays with you long after you've finished it.

Down With The Shipmans by Meg Mitchell Moore ☕

What a lovely little summer read. Down with the Shipmans is a contemporary family novel centered on the Shipman sisters, who reunite at their parents' beach house on the New Hampshire coast after spending some time apart. What I loved most was the focus on family dynamics, especially the relationship between the sisters. It was warm, thoughtful, and atmospheric, and it made me want to quit everything and buy a beach house on the East Coast.

Bonjour, tristesse by Françoise Sagan 🌙

A deeply atmospheric novel that transports you to the French Riviera, where Cécile spends the summer with her father. When Anne, an old friend of Cécile's late mother, arrives, Cécile's peaceful, carefree existence is suddenly threatened, and the Machiavellian game she sets in motion leads to unexpected consequences. Its beautiful prose draws us into the mind of a Cécile who is intelligent, yet still immature and blissfully unaware of the consequences of her actions.

📺 What I watched

Finding Emily (2026) 💌

A fun and quirky rom-com set in Manchester about a young man determined to find the girl he met one night after realizing she gave him the wrong number. It’s predictable, of course, but it’s incredibly charming and full of heart. I loved it.

The Odyssey (2026) 💥📼

I went in with no expectations because I wasn't remotely interested, but I was surprised to find myself completely immersed in the story, especially the actual "odyssey" sections. It was captivating, epic, and absolutely deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Anniversary (2025) 💥🌙

This was probably the movie that surprised me the most this year. It's best to go in knowing as little as possible. It's far deeper and more thought-provoking than the poster or the synopsis would have you believe, and it will definitely stay with you afterwards.

Rebuilding (2025) 🌙

A beautiful, slow-burning film about a cowboy who loses his ranch and reconnects with his daughter while finding a sense of community where he least expects it. The ending really moved me, and Josh O’Connor was fantastic, as always. Highly recommended.

Home Again (2025) ☕💌

A warm, comforting watch. Somehow I'd never seen this despite it starring Reese Witherspoon. I loved that it wasn't just about romance, but also about a woman rebuilding her life after divorce, making new friends, and embracing new experiences.

Regretting You (2025) 💌

I can't say I was disappointed because my expectations weren't particularly high, but this one just didn't work for me. It felt too soapy and melodramatic, the teenage storyline added very little, and I never became invested in the characters. Unfortunately, I wasn't convinced by the performances either.

A Remarkable Place To Die (s01) 🔍☕

I really loved this crime series set in New Zealand. The main character was incredibly likable, I enjoyed the relationships she built with her colleagues, and the cases were genuinely intriguing, especially the one involving her sister. It struck the perfect balance between gritty and cozy.

Ellis (s01 & s02) 🔍

A more serious British crime drama featuring a no-nonsense detective brought in to investigate particularly complex cases. The mysteries were excellent and often took unexpected turns. I just wish I'd connected with the main character a little more.

Irish Blood (s01) 🔍☕

An enjoyable mystery series that turned out to be much cozier than I expected. Alicia Silverstone plays an American lawyer who travels to Ireland to investigate the suspicious death of her father. The Irish setting was gorgeous, and I especially loved the found family aspect.

🎞️ Under the Radar

Saving Grace (2000) ☕

A lovely, charming British film about a widowed housewife who suddenly finds herself in financial trouble and teams up with her gardener to grow marijuana, rediscovering life and herself along the way. It’s definitely a grandma movie, but I couldn’t care less. I love those kinds of films, and this one was delightful.

The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett 📼

The Calamity Club is the second novel by Kathryn Stockett, author of one of my favorite books from my younger years, The Help. Her latest novel is also historical fiction, this time set in 1930s Mississippi during the Great Depression. It follows the lives of Meg, an eleven-year-old girl abandoned by her mother, and Birdie, a twenty-something spinster whose path unexpectedly crosses Meg's, changing both of their lives forever.

The novel is divided into long sections narrated by these two characters. Meg, now living at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum, is intelligent, outspoken, and fiercely resilient, but she is mistreated by the cruel principal, Garnett, who keeps her from attending classes and considers her too old and hopeless to ever be adopted. Meanwhile, Birdie travels to Oxford, Mississippi, to ask her sister for financial help. Her sister, who married a wealthy man and has largely distanced herself from her family, volunteers at the orphanage. During her stay, Birdie begins helping with the asylum's bookkeeping and soon meets Meg.

I was captivated almost immediately. The novel strikes a perfect balance between heartbreaking circumstances and humor, pairing genuinely heartwarming moments with others that are deeply sad and unfair. Both perspectives are immensely readable thanks to the characters' vivid personalities. It's been a long time since I read a book in which I loved both protagonists this much. Meg is perceptive and wise beyond her years, yet still innocent and desperately in need of love. Birdie is one of the most likable characters I've encountered in a long time: pragmatic and resilient, a woman who has lost hope in many ways but remains caring, determined, and open to change. Mrs. Tartt was also a delight, and perhaps the character who surprised me the most. At its heart, this is a story about hope, resilience, found family, and fighting for what you believe in. It tackles difficult themes and can be heartbreaking at times, but I ultimately found it uplifting and unforgettable. It's the kind of story I would love to see adapted for the big screen, and one I'll be recommending, despite its considerable length.

The Sentence is Death by Anthony Horowitz 🔍

I was in the mood for an Agatha Christie-style mystery, so I picked up this sequel from a series I started years ago. It was exactly what I was hoping for: a clever meta mystery packed with suspects, red herrings, hidden clues, and plenty of unexpected twists.

Voicemails for Isabelle (2026) 💌

A beautiful rom-com starring one of my favorite rom-com actresses, Zoey Deutch. It feels like a modern-day You've Got Mail, with plenty of charming moments while keeping its heart firmly in the right place. I was surprised by how emotional it was, and I loved the way it explored the grief of losing a sister.

Faces of Death (2026) 😱

An effective and well-executed slasher starring Barbie Ferreira as a young woman who begins investigating a series of disturbing videos that appear to be snuff films connected to an old movie. It was intriguing from start to finish and kept us on the edge of our seats.

Power Ballad (2026) ☕

The latest music-centered crowd-pleaser from John Carney (Once, Sing Street). When a former boy band member steals a wedding singer's song, he sets out to get the recognition he deserves. It's funny, heartfelt, and an all-around delightful watch.

Obsession (2025) 😱

The movie of the moment! A disturbing, darkly funny cautionary tale about wishes coming true in the worst possible way. Inde Navarrette delivers a fantastic performance and several shocking scenes had us frozen in our seats. It made for a fun theater experience.

Tuner (2025)💥

A different kind of thriller: a blend of drama, romance, and action built around a compelling premise. A piano tuner with hyperacusis discovers he can crack safes, only to become entangled in a criminal web of lies and deception. Plus, there's plenty of beautiful music along the way.

The Eight Mountains (2022) 🌙

An introspective film about the lifelong friendship between two Italian men who meet as children and grow into very different people, yet always find their way back to each other. It's long and slow-paced, but I was completely immersed in their journey. And the soundtrack is easily one of the best I've heard in a long time.

Not Suitable for Work (s01) 💌

The new rom-com from Mindy Kaling is less focused on comedy and more on heart. It reminded me of Friends because of the shared living situation and the workplace-centered storylines. I really enjoyed it, and of course, I'm fully invested in the love quadrangle.

You’re Killing Me (s01) 🔍☕

A cozy mystery series starring Brooke Shields as a bestselling author and Amalia Williamson as an ambitious young true crime podcaster. Together, the duo investigates murders in an idyllic (but surprisingly deadly) New England town. This was so much fun, delightfully silly, and exactly the kind of comfort watch I needed. Thanks, Sara!

Elle (s01) 💌☕

I'm a huge fan of the movie! This series is clearly aimed at a younger audience, but it still throws in plenty of fun '90s references. I wish it had a bit more humor and sharper writing, but Lexi Minetree is great as young Elle, and I loved the contrast between her signature pink style and Seattle's gray, rainy backdrop.

🎞️ Under the Radar

Bed of Roses (1996) 💌

An underappreciated romance starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson. I'll say it: the premise is a little stalker-ish and definitely doesn't hold up by today's standards. Still, it's a genuinely charming watch, and New York is the perfect rom-com city to get lost in.

Writing this while plotting whodunits in my head…

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved mysteries and whodunits. Agatha Christie was introduced to me at the tender age of 10 (alongside glimpses of Murder, She Wrote on my grandmother’s TV). I believe my first book of hers was Murder on the Orient Express, which is still, to this day, one of my favorites. I was soon captivated by the intelligence of Poirot and Miss Marple, the cozy settings, and the way murder seemed to be everywhere: revenge, kidnappings, robberies; and yet everything fit together like a puzzle. I was amused, surprised, scandalized, and always thoroughly entertained.

To this day, when I feel like I need some kind of reset and something easy and fresh to read, I go back to her. I’ve watched all the film adaptations, gone to the theater to see The Mousetrap, and whenever someone compares something to her work, I can’t help but become immediately interested. Am I an expert? Not at all. But I’m a big fan, with some books still left to read, and I’m trying to build a physical collection so I can reread my favorites in times of need.

So whether you’re new to Christie or coming back after years away, these are the seven I’d hand you first… and why.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926)

Best for: Readers who want to know why Christie changed the genre forever, and anyone who enjoys being completely outsmarted.

This book holds a special place in my heart. It’s the one that broke the rules of detective fiction: groundbreaking, clever, and best enjoyed going in as blindly as possible.

And Then There Were None (1939)

Best for: Readers who want their first Christie to be the most cinematic experience, the one that reads like the ultimate locked-room thriller.

This is probably her most popular novel, and for good reason. There’s no Poirot or Marple here; it’s completely atmospheric, tense, and the perfect closed-circle mystery that countless authors have tried to emulate since. Perfection.

The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side (1962)

Best for: First-time Miss Marple readers, and anyone who enjoys small-village intrigue at its most polished.

This is my favorite Marple novel and one of my favorite mysteries overall. Small town, gossip, secrets, and a crime rooted in real-life Hollywood glamour. I was shocked when I first read it, and I always recommend it.

Murder on the Orient Express (1934)

Best for: Adaptation-only viewers ready to discover the source material, and anyone who loves a closed-circle whodunit.

Her second most famous novel, another locked-room mystery, this time set on a train. A large cast of characters, Poirot at his finest, and a resolution that is unforgettable, perfectly executed, and made a huge impression on me.

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas (1938)

Best for: Readers who enjoy holiday-set mysteries with a dark twist.

A Christmas-themed Poirot? Yes. Save this one for the holiday season. This was my most recent discovery on this list. It features a family reunion, an impossible murder, a contested will, and plenty of suspects. Smart, twisty, and very fun.

Death on the Nile (1937)

Best for: Readers who love exotic settings, love triangles, and Poirot at full intellectual swagger.

Even before the most recent adaptation, this was one of my favorite Christie novels. The love triangle, the revenge plot, the sense that nothing is as it seems, and the meticulous construction of every detail make this a delicious read.

Evil Under the Sun (1941)

Best for: Readers who want a sun-soaked, European holiday whodunit.

Poirot is on vacation, predicts a murder… and then it happens. Everyone has a motive, and tensions simmer beneath the surface. A stylish, entertaining, and tightly plotted mystery.

📖 What I read

A Far-Flung Life by M.L Stedman 📼🌙

A Far-Flung Life is the new historical novel by M.L. Stedman, author of the beautiful and poignant The Light Between Oceans. Her newest book is also set in Australia and is a sweeping saga told across decades, following the lives of the MacBrides, who live in the vast territory of Meredith Downs, after tragedy strikes the family. I don’t want to say too much because we’d veer into spoiler territory, but this is not an easy book to read. It is long and rather slow-moving, and its themes are dark and grim, as there are few silver linings for the characters. However, I was completely engrossed throughout the entire novel, from the detailed and atmospheric descriptions of rural life in 1950s Western Australia to the secrets and guilt the characters carry with them over the years.

As she did in her debut, the author excels at shedding light on moral dilemmas and exploring the consequences of the characters’ actions, which reverberate across decades. I couldn’t help but feel emotional by the time I reached the ending, and I know this is a story I’ll remember forever, partly because of the shocking events that occur, but also because of the characters’ journeys, which may not have unfolded as they planned, yet somehow led them to where they were meant to be.

Dissection of a Murder by Jo Murray 🔍

A British courtroom thriller about the murder of a powerful judge, told from two messy POVs. Addictive throughout, with unlikeable characters (especially Leila's truly terrible husband) that somehow make it more compelling. Then the ending happens and the whole thing falls apart: it feels cheap and doesn't make sense within the story's own logic.

📺 What I watched

Girl, Interrupted (1999) 🌙

This didn’t resonate with me back when I first watched it, but I liked it way more this time. It is arguably a sad film, and Angelina Jolie’s character is not easy to like, but I actually loved the sisterhood between the young women and the way Susanna (Winona Ryder) evolved throughout the story.

Something’s Gotta Give (2003) 💌

This was such a pleasant rewatch: the Hamptons setting, the unmistakable Nancy Meyers charm, Diane Keaton doing what she does best. I still can’t understand how anyone could prefer Jack Nicholson’s character over Keanu Reeves’, but I’ll deliberately choose to ignore that.

I Swear (2025) 🌙

Although I’m tired of biopics, I was curious about this one and ended up finding it delightful. I thought it would lean towards comedy, but it was actually way more sad than I expected. Robert Aramayo offers a touching and incredible performance.

Forbidden Fruits (2026) 😱

A horror comedy that mixes Heathers, Mean Girls, The Craft, and somehow… Final Destination? It’s aesthetically pleasing, Lili Reinhart gives it her all and shines as the evil queen bee, but I'll admit I wasn't as into it as I'd hoped. Still, short and fun enough to be worth the watch.

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) ✨💥

A familiar and enjoyable adventure that feels like an extended episode of the show, including a section where Grogu takes center stage and gets to look after Mando for a change. This isn’t groundbreaking by any means, but it was a fun trip to the cinema. Plus, I’ll never get tired of that soundtrack.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles (s01) ☕

Rufi Thorpe’s novel was a surprising hit for me, and the show managed to capture the same essence. It follows a young single mom who decides to create an OnlyFans account with the help of her cosplayer roommate and her estranged ex-pro-wrestler father. It does not seem cozy, but it kinda is.

Hacks (s05) ☕

Although past seasons had some repetitiveness, this last one was my favorite: Ava and Deborah united, hilarious episodes (the fake dating one!), and a penultimate + finale combo that wrecked me. I was sad to say goodbye to these incredible women.

RJ Decker (s01) 🔍☕

A light crime procedural following an ex-photojournalist turned PI after a stint in prison. It offers nothing new, but the cases are fun and I like the Florida setting, the characters, and the fact that he’s on great terms with his ex-wife and her new wife.

Peppermint Soda (1977) 📼 🌙

A realistic and nostalgic coming-of-age French drama set in 1960s Paris about two teenagers at a strict all-girls school, navigating the usual teenage drama, along with political awakening and growing pains. The visuals are gorgeous, and there’s something about vintage French films that makes you want to suddenly start wearing ballet flats, carrying a baguette, and pretending you know how to smoke in a very artsy way.

What I read 📖

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

Practical Magic is a novel I’d been meaning to read for years, since the film it inspired is one of my favorites, one I’ve watched countless times and could probably recite from memory. I was well aware that the book it’s based on is quite different, but I’d read other novels by Alice Hoffman, so I thought I’d enjoy it. The book focuses on two sisters, Sally and Gillian, who are orphaned and raised by their aunts on Magnolia Street in a small town in Massachusetts. The sisters could not be more different, but all the women in the family possess magical abilities and have mostly been outcast by their neighbors and acquaintances because of them. We follow the lives of the two women as they eventually escape their small town and reunite in New York, where their bond is further tested...

What surprised me most is that the book is less “fantastical” than I expected. It’s about magic, sure, but it leans more toward magical realism than pure fantasy. It’s also a story about love and loss, sisterhood, mothers and daughters, and the struggle between escaping your fate and embracing yourself. Despite some darker themes, I’d say this is a fairly light and easygoing novel, not too heavy, not too fluffy, romantic, magical, and beautiful overall.

The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton

The Light Pirate is a quiet, beautiful, magical apocalyptic novel set in Florida, where the state and its surroundings are slowly collapsing because of climate change. The main character is Wanda, named after the hurricane she was born into, and we follow her life and evolution through four different stages: the events leading up to her birth, her childhood, adulthood, and old age.

This is an atmospheric and certainly slow-paced book about surviving and adapting to your surroundings, about nature and connection, about found family, and perhaps hope for a different kind of life. The novel also features elements of magical realism, as Wanda seems to possess a kind of bioluminescent power when in contact with water. I found it especially interesting that Wanda does not know life as her father and brother did; she was born into chaos and a collapsing society that only worsens as the years go by. She is a post-apocalyptic child, a woman belonging to an uncertain future, and she gradually becomes almost a myth or legend. This is unlike any book I’ve read before, and I very much enjoyed the experience.

What I watched 📺

Code of Silence (s01)
A great show about a deaf woman who starts working for the police after volunteering to read lips. The case was addictive, there were many surprises, and the relationship between the leads was magnetic.

House of Spirits (miniseries)
I love the book and remember not liking the film very much, but this series was enjoyable. It follows the novel quite faithfully and immerses you in the family story and lore. I liked the political aspect, but I missed more focus on the magical realism.

Legends (miniseries)
This was the perfect crime show for me: based on true events, it follows a group of customs workers who infiltrate the Liverpool drug world to help stop heroin smuggling. It was thrilling and tense, and Tom Burke was amazing.

The Drama (2026)
I liked the debate it sparked more than the actual film itself, which had some funny moments and was definitely uncomfortable and smart, but I don’t think I’d watch it again. Let’s discuss it!

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026)
This was two hours of pure entertainment and happiness, and I don’t regret a thing. The outfits, the locations, the iconic Miranda Priestly… I had a great time, and that’s exactly what I went in for.

They Will Kill You (2026)
I thought this film was going to be something like Ready or Not, but instead it’s an action comedy (albeit with a supernatural theme and veeeery gory). It was silly and unhinged, and it reminded me of Kill Bill.

The Sheep Detectives (2026)
A cozy family film, think Knives Out, but perfect for children. The sheep were adorable, I really loved the small-town setting, and the fact that it got more emotional than I expected and made me want to quit everything and become a shepherd.

Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026)
I was excited because I was interested in the book, and it really was a beautiful and emotional story. I thought the octopus would have a bigger presence, but it was actually perfect how it became the narrator and catalyst for everything. Prepare tissues.

Crossing Delancey (1988)

I thought I’d seen almost every romance movie from the ’80s and ’90s, so I was surprised I’d never even heard of this one. It’s a sweet, effortlessly watchable romantic comedy with a cozy atmosphere that reminded me a bit of Moonstruck. The big difference is that the romantic interest here was genuinely lovely, which made it even more frustrating that the main character didn’t come to her senses. A perfect comfort watch.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

Yesteryear is one of those books that seems to be everywhere right now. I picked it up despite my usual reservations about novels focused on social media and influencers, but the premise drew me in: a tradwife influencer who finds herself transported back to the 1800s. I have a soft spot for time travel, so I was curious to see where it would go.

I expected something closer to a cautionary tale, with Natalie facing real hardship and perhaps rethinking her beliefs. That isn’t at all what this book is about. Instead, it’s much darker and stranger than I anticipated. There’s a constant sense of unease running through it, and I was never entirely sure what was really happening, but in a way that kept me engaged and wanting to understand more. What stood out most to me was Natalie’s voice. The entire story is told from her perspective, and the author does an excellent job of immersing you in her mind, her thoughts, her reasoning, and her clearly damaged psyche. She isn’t a likable character, and watching her gradual unraveling isn’t easy. At the same time, that’s what makes the novel so compelling. It’s messy, uncomfortable, and doesn’t offer a neat resolution. Not the most pleasant reading experience, but one that I think is worth it.

What I watched 📺

Under Salt Marsh (miniseries)
A British crime miniseries that I found quite depressing in tone, but whose mystery had me hooked from the beginning. I’d recommend it because the actors do a great job, and the setting is wonderful: dark, damp, oppressive, and full of hidden secrets.

The Law According to Lidia Poet (S03)
This has been a happy place for me over the last few years, and I deeply enjoyed the final season and the conclusion of Lidia’s story and this season’s mystery. The last few episodes had some emotional moments that echoed the real-life Lidia, and I wish it could have gone on for more years.

Beef (S02)
I watched this mainly because of the amazing actors, as I didn’t care much for the first season (I know I’m in the minority). This second installment had some crazy moments, and the last episodes were completely deranged. It also had some White Lotus vibes, but I don’t think I’ll be thinking about it that often.

Unchosen (miniseries)
I was super excited about this show because cult stories are usually a win for me, and I love miniseries. Unchosen surprised me by not going where I expected it to in terms of plot, which is good. It was engaging and not a bad story, but overall it felt a bit underwhelming.

How To Make A Killing (2026)
This was a surprise, as I expected something savage and perhaps more violent, but instead found a very compelling dark dramedy (with a very ’90s-style voiceover) that felt a bit like the series You. Margaret Qualley makes the perfect femme fatale. I absolutely loved the ending.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026)
I’m the biggest fan of the first film, and while this was super fun and gory (and Samara Weaving is the absolute queen of recent horror) I felt like it kind of lost the freshness and unsettling tone of the first one, which I guess is to be expected from a sequel. On the other hand, I loved the mythology it built.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die (2025)
This was delirious in the best sense of the word. I know it won’t be for everyone because it’s kind of silly and chaotic, but if you vibe with it and enter its weird little world, then you’re in for an adventure. If you like Black Mirror, give this a go. The title is perfect, and the ending leaves room for plenty of wild theories.

Apex (2026)
A classic survival thriller set in the Australian wilderness. It features Eric Bana (although far too briefly) and stars Charlize Theron and creepy Taron Egerton in a violent cat-and-mouse game. It’s no-nonsense, short, and tense… a good Friday night movie choice.

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice (2026)
An original, genre-bending mix of crime thriller, comedy, and science fiction. I would’ve never guessed it would feature a five-minute debate about Gilmore Girls, but it did. It’s fast-paced and unserious, and at one point I was even a bit emotional. Good fun.

Brokedown Palace (1999)

I was obsessed with this film as a teenager, I probably watched it more than ten times. I knew all the lines, got angry at the characters, and cried at the ending. It’s been a few years since I last watched it, but I still think about it often. Now that I think about it, it’s also probably one of the reasons I still haven’t visited Thailand (just kidding). It’s a story of friendship and betrayal, and a truly emotional one.

What I read 📖

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors

Blue Sisters is a contemporary drama about three sisters: Avery, Bonnie, and Lucky, grieving the death of their sister Nicky a year after she died from an overdose, following prolonged pain caused by endometriosis. All of the sisters, as well as their parents, struggle with addiction in one form or another, making this a dark and unflinching novel that explores their complicated relationships, their guilt and self-destructive tendencies, and the possibility of a hopeful yet realistic future.

The book is narrated from the sisters’ points of view, each of them recalling Nicky’s death and the way it has affected, and continues to affect, their lives. The prologue and first chapter, told from Lucky’s POV, perhaps the least likable of the sisters, were brilliant. I was instantly captivated by Coco Mellors’ raw, beautiful writing, the almost mythic portrayal of sisterhood, and the unromanticized exploration of addiction. It’s a heavy book, but one that will stay with me for a long time.

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo

The Most Fun We Ever Had is a family drama about four sisters and their parents, told across multiple years, from the moment the parents, Marilyn and David, meet, through each of the daughters’ births and teenage years, intertwined with a present-day storyline in which a mysterious character interrupts their lives and forces them to reflect on their past, their mistakes, and their futures.

The characters were more or less likable, each with their strengths and flaws, except for Violet, whom I sadly could not stand. My favorite was, undoubtedly, Jonah. The narration switches between POVs and timelines quickly, but you never feel lost. Despite one character experiencing more tragedies than I thought possible, the rest of the events felt authentic and realistic. The relationship between the sisters, especially Wendy and Violet, was complex, and I appreciated that it didn’t follow a predictable or simplistic route. I also found Liza’s struggles quite compelling and really felt for her, while Grace came across as the forgotten one, even though she was also suffering and trying to find her place in the world.
Overall, this was a solid novel that kept me engrossed and felt smart and psychologically honest, but it was far too long, which took away some of the enjoyment, as I ended up feeling quite exhausted by the time I finished reading about the Sorensons.

What I watched 📺

Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen (miniseries)
Although I think this definitely should’ve been a movie and it dragged toward the end, it intrigued me from the very beginning and was incredibly creepy and mysterious. I absolutely loved how it completely changed course from what I initially thought was happening, so smart! It was beautifully shot, and the editing was incredible.

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat (S02)
Somehow this was even better than the first season, which I didn’t think was possible. Anthony was a breath of fresh air: he was genuinely great, and I loved how he reacted to every situation he was put in. Episode 7 felt like an actual movie, and the final minutes were thrilling. He really delivered. Fun and emotional.

The Other Bennet Sister (miniseries)
This sweet period drama was probably my favorite recent watch. It was beautiful, romantic, and well-written, and it had me smiling the whole way through. I loved Mary’s coming-of-age journey and the way she was pursued by not one, but two suitors! Just lovely.

Lynley (S01)
I can’t resist a classic British mystery show where every episode feels like a movie. This is actually a remake, but I haven’t seen the original or read the books. Nothing groundbreaking, pretty standard overall, but watching detectives solve not-too-heavy cases is my favorite form of self-care and truly a happy place for me.

Detective Hole (S01)
This one, on the other hand, was rather dark and unsettling, and a bit chaotic for my taste. I read about five Harry Hole books years ago, and I enjoyed watching this adaptation, as it surprised me with some of its reveals. Not a favorite, but decent enough that I’ll keep watching.

Brigsby Bear (2017)
I saw this recommended on Reddit, and it was amazing. I thought I’d like it, but it was much better than I ever expected. A beautiful, sometimes hilarious, original, and ultimately tender film about the magic of fiction: how it shapes us, and how wonderful it is to share our love for stories with others.

Send Help (2026)
My favorite type of film lately: a dark, gory comedy where a woman ends up stranded on an exotic island with her insufferable boss… but the tables turn, as she knows a lot about survival skills and he’s wounded and clueless (as I’d be). It’s rather disgusting at times, but also a lot of fun, and Rachel McAdams is amazing.

Crime 101 (2026)
An elegant, tense heist thriller reminiscent of ’90s films, featuring Mark Ruffalo in his now-typical “good cop with morals” role. It has a great cast full of familiar faces. It’s smart, well-written, and well-shot, and the ending is chef’s kiss. No complaints.

Project Hail Mary (2026)
I can’t believe I finally got to watch the adaptation of one of my favorite novels of the past few years. It was every bit as good as I’d hoped: Ryan Gosling was incredible, Rocky was adorable, and I think they managed to replicate the magic of the book, as well as the essence of Grace and Rocky’s relationship. I can’t wait to watch it again.

Murphy’s Romance (1985)

A beautiful, smart romantic comedy featuring Sally Field as a divorced single mother who starts over in a new town and meets an older man she begins dating. I reaaaally enjoyed this when I watched it a couple of years ago, and it’s not as well known as other romances, so totally recommended.

What I read 📖

Go as a River by Shelley Read ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Go as a River is a beautiful and atmospheric debut novel that spans twenty years, telling the story of Victoria Nash, a young girl who experiences loss and heartbreak from an early age. After meeting a young Indigenous man at seventeen, Victoria falls in love, and as a result her life path shifts, leading her to make difficult decisions that will echo throughout everything that follows. The prose is breathtaking. The descriptions of nature and wildlife made me feel as though I were right alongside Victoria during both her struggles and her moments of peace, inhaling the scent of peaches, the flow of the river, the mud, the trees, everything.

The first part of the book was the strongest for me. The initial encounter, the relationship, the cabin passages, and the picnic scene were all mesmerizing and completely hooked me. What followed was not what I expected, as I had hoped the story would continue to focus more on the survival aspect. Even so, I found the novel to be beautifully written and deeply emotional, and the letters in the final section moved me quite a bit.

What I watched 📺

Cross (S02)
I have mixed feelings about this season. It started off well enough, but I couldn’t bring myself to care about Kayla or her storyline, which took up far too much time. That said, the main case was exciting, and I found myself 100% on the “villains’” side, which made the final episodes especially addictive.

The Pitt (S01)
I’m late to the party, but the first season was super tense, and so well done. I initially avoided it because I wasn’t in the mood for something too heavy, but despite a few triggering cases, it wasn’t as bleak as I expected. It’s so watchable and addictive!

Scarpetta (S01)
This was a bit of a disappointment. There were things I really liked: Bobby Cannavale, Rosy McEwen as a young Scarpetta, the intriguing case, and the past connections; but a lot didn’t work for me. The AI storyline was one of the most pointless I’ve seen, and characters like Lucy and Dorothy took up too much screen time. The case also ended up being quite predictable, which was a shame.

The Bride! (2026)
A truly original and chaotic film with a weird but interesting premise. It doesn’t fully land because it tries to do too many things and isn’t exactly subtle in its intentions, but it’s still a strong effort. Jessie Buckley is amazing as always, and I loved the camaraderie between Peter Sarsgaard and Penélope Cruz.

Bob Trevino Likes It (2024)
A beautiful indie film about a lonely young woman who, after a fight with her father, accidentally befriends a man who shares his name. Their unexpected friendship helps them both and ultimately changes her life. A tearjerker, but absolutely worth it.

Fight or Flight (2024)
A silly action film that feels like Bullet Train on a plane (just with a smaller budget). It’s packed with ludicrous fights, twists, blood, and plenty of fun. Josh Hartnett makes for a great protagonist, and he should definitely do more films, especially action.

Summer of 69 (2025)
A fresh and sweet coming-of-age story about an insecure teenager who hires a stripper to help her gain confidence and learn more about sex. I love this kind of film, and this one was super enjoyable. The friendship between Abby and Santa Monica was delightful, and I really loved how it all wrapped up.

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)

The kind of film I’m always in the mood for, a coming-of-age road trip drama with a big heart and unforgettable characters. It tells the story of a young man with Down syndrome who runs away from his residential care home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. It’s wholesome, funny, and smartly written, and it also features Dakota Johnson.

What I read 📖

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

An intimate, moving, and nostalgic family drama about Lara, a woman in her fifties who, during 2020, reunites with her three daughters and tells them the story of her years as an actress and her relationship with Peter Duke, whom she met at a summer theater company at Tom Lake.

I was instantly captivated by this tender, quiet story of young love and ambition, intertwined with the present-day narrative of Lara working in the family cherry orchard alongside her husband and daughters. The writing is beautiful, and the novel stirred a sense of nostalgia in me for something I never even experienced. The passages set at Tom Lake are quietly mesmerizing. I know some readers might feel that not much really happens, but I loved how the book felt like a warm blanket in winter.

What I watched 📺

The Night Agent (S03)
A success. The season was gripping and addictive. I really like Peter and the way he fights for what he believes in. Adam, Isabel de León, and The Father were all great additions, and it kept me guessing!

Bridgerton (S04)
A lovely Cinderella version. The first four episodes were fine, but the second half made it even better. I was in love with Benedict and Sophie’s story, and the secondary storylines were also satisfying. Much better than last season, in my opinion.

Young Sherlock (S01)
A fun mystery series about a young Sherlock Holmes embarking on his first adventure alongside his new friend, James Moriarty. I found it addictive, and the mystery went to unexpected places, much bigger than I initially thought. I really enjoyed it.

Wuthering Heights (2026)
This was visually stunning, pretty intoxicating and addictive. In my mind, Fennell created the version that might have actually happened, since the book is told from Nelly’s POV and she’s completely unreliable. I like how it sparks conversation and debate.

Scream 7 (2026)
As a slasher, the movie itself was pretty good. The opening sequence was great and there were some fun deaths, so we had a good time. However, the final reveal was underwhelming and predictable, and of course I missed my queen Melissa Barrera.

Relay (2024)
This was an unexpectedly good thriller. It felt original and fresh, and the plot was tense and intriguing. Riz Ahmed and Lily James were captivating as the protagonists, and seeing their relationship unfold was a highlight.

Ella McCay (2025)
I was excited to watch this, but it was a weird one. On the one hand, it had 90s movie vibes, which I obviously adore, but on the other hand it was pretty messy and disjointed, and the political plot didn’t interest me much. I do love Emma Mackey, though, and she gave it her all.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)

This might be a goofy choice, but I think it’s a brilliant horror comedy, albeit extremely gory. Tucker and Dale are two simple, good-natured friends who are mistaken for serial killers by a group of college kids. What follows is a hilarious adventure filled with blood and laughs. I’ve watched it three or four times, and it’s so underrated.

Women of a Promiscuous Nature by Donna Everhart ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Women of a Promiscuous Nature is a historical fiction novel based on real events that took place in North Carolina in the 1940s. The law allowed women suspected of “promiscuity” (which, as you can imagine, mostly meant women living alone, pregnant teenagers, abused women, etc.) to be locked up in institutions aimed at “reforming” them. The book can be difficult to read at times because of the injustice and the severe abuse these women endured. Still, I appreciated the nuance in portraying the colony as, especially for those abused at home, an unexpected form of refuge.

The story is narrated by three women: Ruth and Stella, two inmates, and Dorothy Baker, the superintendent of the State Industrial Farm Colony for Women. Her perspective adds another layer to the narrative; it’s baffling that she genuinely believes she is doing the right thing. Stella was a complicated character to like. Although she is young and you can certainly sympathize with her, I found her frustrating at times. Ruth, on the other hand, was remarkable: her story is deeply sad and profoundly unjust, and I was constantly rooting for her freedom. This is a bleak and realistic novel, so don’t expect sweeping happy endings or dramatic twists. Instead, it’s a beautifully written, gripping drama that makes you feel the weight of the terrible fate these women were forced to endure.

What I watched 📺

The Lincoln Lawyer (S04)
Probably my favorite season so far. I didn’t remember anything from the book, so I was on the edge of my seat throughout all ten episodes, waiting for the verdict. The focus on Neve Campbell’s character, Maggie, was a highlight this season, and I always love Lorna’s storylines.

Steal (miniseries)
A short and effective British crime series about Zara, an office worker at a pension management company who gets caught up in a robbery. It started off strong and definitely had some good moments, but it didn’t quite manage to wow me as much as I’d hoped. I also found the main villain fairly easy to guess.

56 Days (miniseries)
I watched it because I’ve enjoyed some of Catherine Ryan Howard’s novels. I didn’t really like the lead actors, and most of the characters were unlikable (though I did like Shyla!). However, the mystery was intriguing, and I’ll admit I didn’t see some of the twists coming. It dragged at times, but overall I’m pretty satisfied with how things turned out.

Marty Supreme (2025)
Surprisingly, this has been my favorite theater experience recently. Maybe it’s my love for chaotic stories, but I didn’t expect it to be this fun and unhinged. I’m not even a fan of Timothée Chalamet, but this was an absolute blast. The soundtrack was amazing, too.

Roofman (2025)
Another success. I knew very little about this crazy real-life story and, based on the director, I was expecting something very different. In the end, Roofman turned out to be a beautiful, feel-good dramedy that felt authentic and nuanced. I just love Kirsten Dunst.

No Other Choice (2025)
I really dug the wild premise, and the cinematography was undoubtedly great. I get it, I’d also do anything to keep living in that wonderful house. Overall, I enjoyed it and had a good time, but I think I expected to be blown away, and I wasn’t.

Circle Of Friends (1995)

I haven’t read the book it’s based on, but I’ve watched this movie two or three times… I’m a sucker for nostalgic friendship stories 🫶 Set in 1950s Ireland, it follows a group of friends as they go to college and navigate relationships, friendship, and sex. It’s a sweet and sincere story, perfect for a cozy afternoon.

What I read 📖

Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston ⭐⭐⭐

Anatomy of an Alibi is the newest thriller from the author of First Lie Wins, a book I deeply enjoyed a couple of years ago. The novel begins in a very mysterious way and immediately captivated me: Aubrey is posing as Camille, a wealthy woman married to an influential lawyer. When Camille’s husband dies, Aubrey realizes she has become the perfect alibi... but what exactly happened, and what were the two of them planning?

The story is entertaining, with a few good twists and a strong ending, but I felt somewhat disconnected from the whole ordeal. Perhaps we didn’t spend enough time with the characters for me to fully care about what happened to them. The plot also felt a bit too convoluted for my taste and didn’t always flow naturally, making some of the antics feel slightly forced. That said, this is often the case with suspense novels, so it didn’t bother me too much. Overall, this was a solid, if not particularly remarkable, popcorn thriller.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

A tragic and dark tale of obsession and vengeance, rather unromantic despite its fame. This is the story of a tortured young man who, after being wronged by his stepbrother and by the only woman he loved (Catherine, who shared his wild, untamed soul) decides to take his suffering one step further and torment everyone around him: Catherine's family and even the next generation of sons and daughters; until he is left empty, drained of any energy to express further hatred.

The novel is narrated by Nelly Dean, the housekeeper at Wuthering Heights, who has been a witness to Heathcliff’s unhappy life since he was adopted as a child by the Earnshaws. She recounts everything that happened through her own perspective to Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, whose curiosity about his landlord prompts the story. One of the most intriguing aspects of the book is that Nelly is, of course, a deeply unreliable narrator, full of judgement and bias. You never truly know what the other characters think or feel, and their actions may well be distorted through her eyes. All in all, this is a highly atmospheric read, fairly easy to get through thanks to the constant intrigue and tension that run throughout the novel, a lingering sense of dread and anticipation that never quite resolves. A love story? I don’t think so. More a portrait of the obsessions of a deeply flawed and profoundly unhappy man.

What I watched 📺

His & Hers (miniseries)
This was short, juicy, entertaining, and it managed to surprise me, which I always appreciate. It might not be good, but it was a fun watch, and I don’t get tired of those.

Run Away (miniseries)
A decent thriller, definitely better than Missing You, but I still had some issues with certain storylines, which were a bit too many. I did love the main character, Simon, and some of the twists were pretty good.

Ponies (S01)
My favorite series of the year so far: a Cold War spy thriller featuring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, who have amazing chemistry. I loved it because the characters have growth, the plot is tense and thrilling, and it had great humour throughout. It was a lot of fun.

The Night Manager (S01 & S02)
Somehow I never watched this back in 2016, which is a shame, because I ended up bingeing this like nothing else was going on. I loved Hugh Laurie’s acting, and the locations were incredible. I even enjoyed season 2 better than season 1, although that ending ruined my mood for the day.

Hamnet (2026)
A sad and beautiful adaptation of a very popular book. I can honestly say that I enjoyed the film more than the novel, and the ending was especially moving. Jessie Buckley was amazing, as usual. I loved how it explores how grief affects all of us differently and how art can help us heal.

People We Meet on Vacation (2026)
A typical romcom. I had a great time and really enjoyed Poppy and Alex’s chemistry, as well as the actors chosen for the roles. It was a fun, sweet movie, and despite its summer feel, it was perfect for a cozy winter night. Bring on more Emily Henry adaptations!

The Rip (2026)
A tense and suspenseful thriller that ended up being much better than I expected. I was fully prepared to be annoyed by some things that didn’t make any sense, but it later blindsided me and left me feeling like a fool. Gotta love that. The relationship between the characters also really shone.

Eternity (2025)
A cute romantic comedy with a very classic feel that I greatly enjoyed. I really liked the fantasy bits, à la Upload, but I thought Elizabeth Olsen’s dilemma was, to say the least, disrespectful to her long-decades husband. I hope I’m not the only one lol.

Twinless (2025)
This was a very unexpected film, a sweet dramedy that made me laugh but also got me quite emotional. It follows two men who become friends after losing their twin brothers. I recommend not knowing anything else and just going with the flow… this is the kind of indie film I look for.

Train Dreams (2025)
I really believe you have to be in the right mood to appreciate contemplative films like this one, but thankfully, I was. Train Dreams is a beautiful, slow-moving story about a common man searching for life’s meaning after a big loss. It features gorgeous cinematography and an ending that had me crying because of its delicacy.

Mermaids (1990)

This is honestly one of my all-time favorite movies. Ever since I first watched it as a teenager, I’ve been captivated by Cher as a mother and by the two daughters (Christina Ricci and Winona Ryder!), their relationship, the focus on women, the sweet love story, the teenage struggles, the soundtrack, and the overall coziness of it all. It’s fun, heartwarming, smart, and pure perfection, in my opinion.

The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

A beautiful work of historical fiction set in 1930s Kentucky, featuring Alice, a young woman who moves to America and decides to become a Packhorse librarian, bringing books to women and families in remote areas while living through various adventures and rediscovering herself along the way. This is such a feel-good, gorgeous story, with a wonderfully easy flow. Unforgettable.

First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

I remember reading this book before it became a hit and raving about it to anyone who would listen. First Lie Wins is a twisty, fun thriller about Evie, a young con artist with a new mark whose life starts to get complicated. Addictive from the first page, smart but never dense, and deliciously devious.

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

I had to honor Sophie Kinsella with the book that helped me get through a whole day at the airport. This is classic chick-lit, a true romantic comedy about a young woman who loses her engagement ring and ends up uncovering a stranger’s mobile phone… and falling in love. It’s light and breezy, hilarious and silly, and most importantly, it kept me turning the pages again and again.

The 22 Murders of Madison May by Max Barry

A blend of sci-fi and thriller about a woman who keeps getting murdered across various parallel worlds by a serial killer, and the journalist who tries to uncover the mystery. This is a mind-blowing, extremely entertaining, and easy-to-read novel featuring likable heroines and a smart concept that keeps surprising you.

The Pact by Sharon Bolton

A good old psychological thriller that’s perfect for a quick read: a fast-paced story about a group of teenagers who make a mistake… and eighteen years later, revenge is a dish best served cold. I haven’t enjoyed Bolton’s books as much after this one, which makes this one particularly special to me.

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak

My go-to recommendation when someone asks for a twisty, addictive thriller and doesn’t mind a supernatural angle. Hidden Pictures is probably one of my favorite books of the last few years: an engrossing story with a flawed but very likable main character who starts babysitting Teddy, the son of a wealthy couple who, of course, hide more than one dark secret. I never saw it coming.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

A young adult classic that follows the Groundhog Day trope: Samantha is a popular girl who dies in an accident and relives the same day over and over again, trying to avoid her fate. It’s not an original idea, but it’s compelling, touching, and a very beautiful, albeit sad, story.

The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

I have a love-hate relationship with Riley Sager’s books, but I’ll always remember reading this teen-horror summer camp mystery and being shocked by all the twisty reveals. It’s a great page-turner: dark, propulsive, and one of my favorites by him.

Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern

For me, epistolary novels are always a win: easy to get into and easy to become immersed in. Where Rainbows End is the ultimate proof: a sweet, funny, and enjoyable romcom about the friendship-turned-love story of Rosie and Alex, who communicate over the years through letters, emails, texts, and more. Plus, the film adaptation is also great.

In My Dreams I Hold A Knife by Ashley Winstead

A compulsively addictive college whodunit featuring highly unlikable characters you’ll love to hate. There’s plenty of teenage drama, and it’s one of those thrillers you won’t be able to put down, but it’s also character-driven and perfect for a sleepless night.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

A mind-blowing science-fiction adventure that manages to be both complex and incredibly easy to read. Blake Crouch is a master of this kind of novel, and I always recommend this one to readers looking for something fast-paced, engaging, and surprising. Plus, it’s also a love story, so there’s a bit for everyone.

The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain

A beautiful novel that blends family drama, historical fiction, and time-travel fantasy, about a widow who will do anything to save her unborn daughter from a tragic fate. I don’t want to spoil too much, but I still remember the emotions this book put me through. Completely unputdownable.

What I read 📖

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A raw and deeply depressing story, maybe too much to end the year and start the new one with, yet at the same time one of the best books I’ve read in ages and the perfect novel to encourage me to tackle bigger, longer stories. It had such an epic feel to it. I love books that stay with you, that have you thinking and reflecting on the characters and their circumstances even when you’re not actually reading, leaving you feeling empty when you reach the final page, and this does exactly that. Also, Demon is probably my favorite narrator ever, and I’m usually not even a fan of first-person narrators.

What I watched 📺

Stranger Things (S05)
I don’t care about the haters; this show has been really important to me. I’ve been watching it for ten years, and while I definitely think episodes should not be that long, the finale was epic, moving, and had me crying for 45 minutes straight. Goodbye, Hawkins. It’s been a blast ♥

IT: Welcome to Derry (S01)
I’m a horror fan and I really liked the movies, so of course I was going to watch this. Welcome to Derry was dark and original, and I loved how it expanded the mythology of Derry and Pennywise, adding new layers to the story. The ending was exciting, and I can’t wait to watch the following seasons.

Mudtown (S01)
A smart and tense Welsh crime drama featuring a magistrate who faces moral dilemmas while working on a case. I really liked the main character, Clare, and the family secrets that were slowly uncovered. Too bad it won’t have a second season.

Dracula (2025)
I really liked this adaptation, which was a weird blend of genres (it even had some almost musical moments). I loved how it changed the story to make it more romantic: I actually wanted Vlad and Mina together lol.

Wicked: For Good (2025)
This was my last movie at the theaters in 2025, and while I wasn’t sure at the beginning, it grew on me and I ended up really enjoying the last hour. Ariana Grande’s Glinda is such a delight, and I liked the nods to The Wizard of Oz and all the Dorothy scorn.

Anaconda (2025)
This was my first movie of the year, and I honestly had a blast. Of course, everyone knows it’s a silly film and it won’t win any awards, but what else can you ask for on a cold, rainy afternoon? And Jack Black is awesome (although not in an Elle Fanning way).

The Housemaid (2025)
A fun, campy thriller featuring beautiful people doing nasty stuff. I haven’t read the book, and while I now know there are some differences and the movie ending was slightly changed, I was thoroughly entertained and loved Amanda Seyfried’s unhinged acting.

Romancing the Stone (1984)

A favorite of mine. I believe Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner had crazy chemistry, and I’m a big fan of both this movie and its sequel. A fun, romantic, and ultimately cozy adventure featuring a young romance writer trying to rescue her kidnapped sister. Would watch it over and over…

What I read 📖

The Witch’s Orchard by Archer Sullivan ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Witch’s Orchard is a debut crime novel set in Appalachia, featuring Annie Gore, ex-military turned P.I., who takes on a difficult case when Max asks her to investigate his sister’s disappearance 10 years ago, along with two other young girls who also went missing in a small mountain town. The book was really engrossing; the first chapter kicked things off in a very intriguing manner, and I was rooting for Annie from the start. She was a really good character, nice, hard-working, caring, and smart. Of course, she has her demons, like all good detectives in fiction, but she didn’t feel like a caricature.

The setting felt oppressive; you could really sense the small-town vibes and the folklore and legends that accompany these places with rich history. For me, the mystery was fascinating, and every new event added more intrigue. I could not wait to find out exactly what had happened. Unfortunately, the resolution of the mystery was not up to the high standards of the rest of the book; most of it felt like exposition, the identity was not really surprising, and the explanations provided for the main enigmas were weak, in my opinion. Still, I really enjoyed Annie’s adventure and the way she forged relationships, so I want to read the next one and hopefully I’ll enjoy the ending more.

Discontent by Beatriz Serrano ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This had been greatly recommended by friends and fellow Substackers, so I took a chance and read it in its original Spanish, which is also my mother tongue. Discontent is a sarcastic, witty and profoundly cynical book about a lonely young woman, Marisa, who hates having to go to work (which she differentiates from merely hating “her job”) and is living in deep, routine-filled dread and having a long, desperate existential crisis.

This was very different from what I usually look for in novels, and it’s definitely not my preferred genre or type of read, but as I did with My Year of Rest and Relaxation, I found it quite amusing, and it kept me thoroughly entertained through its 200 pages. The part at the team-building event was especially hilarious, and I’d love for this to become an HBO miniseries or film.

What I watched 📺

The Last Frontier (S01)
The Alaska setting and the twists kept me engaged. It cannot be taken seriously and it definitely should end with the last episode, but I had a good enough time. Plus, it has Dominic “what can I say, I love my wife” Cooper, so enough said.

The Crow Girl (S01)
Dark, eerie, mysterious, but still filled with humour and sarcasm. I loved the main character, Jeanette, and Dougray Scott’s accent; the mystery was solid, and there were some great twists in there. BUT I still don’t think it should’ve been stretched into a second season.

Man on the Inside (S02)
A lovely second season. This is a cozy show that won’t make much noise, but it’s nice and warm, everyone in it is a good person, and it had a mystery I didn’t predict. I loved how it still brought back the characters from the past season, and it didn’t feel forced.

Playing Gracie Darling (S01)
An aussie crime series. I quite enjoyed it and the mystery was pretty intriguing from the start, both timelines had me hooked and the supernatural angle made it eerie and dark, which I also loved.

The Running Man (2025)
I honestly had a great time at the movie theater. I love Glen Powell’s charisma, and it was action-filled, very Black Mirror-esque, and despite the ending being a bit too neat, it’s a great sci-fi action flick.

Jingle Bell Heist (2025)
A cozy and fun Christmas heist film featuring two likable leads, plenty of charm, some good twists, and an overall feel-good vibe. And it’s only 90 minutes long, so what else can we ask for from this type of flick?

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025)

I’m not lying when I say I’d been waiting for this film for months. I love Benoit Blanc and would happily watch fifty more of these, and Josh O’Connor’s character was delightful. The mystery was very twisted and reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s novels, which I loved.

Running On Empty (1988)

One of my favorite movies: a nostalgic, beautiful, and intimate coming-of-age film. It offers a realistic portrait of a broken family, the parents’ mistakes, and their consequences for the teenage son, portrayed beautifully by River Phoenix.

Hi, readers! 💌 Cold season is definitely here, and that means more time indoors and hopefully more time to read and watch things. What are your plans for cold-themed reads, films, and shows? Here’s some of what I read and watched during the last month (yes, it’s been a month!).

What I read 📖

The Vanishing Place by Zoë Rankin

A dark and atmospheric book set in the New Zealand bush, telling the story of Effie, a young woman who travels back home to NZ from Scotland when a wild young girl, Anya, appears covered in blood in Koraha. The girl, who resembles her, has witnessed a murder. With the help of a policeman and childhood friend, Effie goes back to the bush and tries to connect all the dots. Meanwhile, we learn about Effie’s childhood and teenage years living in isolation with her family in a remote cabin. But is there something else? Why does her father behave so strangely? And how does everything connect to Anya and the present murder?

The book was very well written, with the flashbacks being extremely captivating from the beginning. It made me suffer for the children, and the story that was told later made me very angry at parts. I wouldn’t say this is a thriller, the majority of the novel leans more toward family drama, and the middle part was a bit slow, but the last section did feel more like a psychological thriller and was really engaging. The explanations at the end were not as satisfying as I would’ve hoped; I thought some of it was rather convenient. But all in all, this was a great read: perfect for fans of The Marsh King’s Daughter, Resin, or Where the Crawdads Sing. I love a good book set in the wild!

Sisters in the Wind by Angeline Boulley

Sisters in the Wind is a coming-of-age story about Lucy Smith, a young woman who, after surviving an attack, finds out she’s of Native American heritage and has a family who wants to get to know her. We follow her as she tries to navigate her new identity and relationships, while also learning about her difficult past as a foster kid: constantly moving from home to home and meeting some truly awful people.

I found this a really emotional and moving story. It deals with some dark themes but also manages to be hopeful at times. I was very invested in both the story and the characters, especially since I’d already met Daunis and Jamie in The Firekeeper’s Daughter, which I absolutely loved. That said, I have to admit I didn’t love the climax; I thought it was overly dramatic and far-fetched, and I wish it had gone in a different direction. Still, I really appreciated learning more about Native history, the injustices, and the Indian Child Welfare Act.

The Token by Sharon J. Bolton

The Token is the last standalone novel by Sharon Bolton, and I must say the cover and tagline are indeed very misleading, since only about 5% of the novel takes place on a boat. The story is about seven individuals who receive a mysterious letter along with a token, the letter stating they will receive a big part of a multimillionaire’s inheritance. But none of them knows why Logan Quick is leaving his fortune to them, and they don’t remember knowing each other either. So what is exactly going on?

I’ll say this didn’t really feel like a thriller; the most interesting part was the social commentary on whether receiving this apparent blessing is actually a nightmare in disguise, since all of the people start receiving threats and seeing their lives in peril, making them wonder if the promise of the fortune is even worth it. This takes up the main part of the story, and the mystery of who Logan Quick is and the reason for the tokens is not really that important and only becomes relevant in the final part of the book. At first I had some issues tracking all the characters and their lives; once I did, I was mildly interested in what would happen, but the book is on the longer side and by the time they get on the boat, I had lost most of my interest. There are no big surprises, and the mystery is reminiscent of classic mystery novels, but I didn’t find it satisfying. I’m sad that I haven’t been able to fully enjoy the last few books of one of my favorite authors, but I believe this to be one of her weaker works.

What I watched 📺

Lazarus (S01)

I didn’t know this would be a supernatural thriller, but I learned to vibe with it. I wouldn’t say it was good, but it was addictive. The mysteries had me hooked, and while I didn’t like one of the resolutions, the other one was twisty and satisfying.

The Hardacres (s01)

I was on a period-drama kick and watched this engrossing rags-to-riches story, which I really enjoyed. It was well written and produced, and the clashes between the family and the neighbours/help were really engaging to watch.

The Forsytes (s01)

While watching Hardacres, there was a preview for this one, so I decided to watch it as well. It was super unserious, practically a Bridgerton wannabe: voiceover, melodramatic plotlines, and cheesy relationships. It was still fun; I can’t help but enjoy these things.

All Her Fault (miniseries)

This was a soapy psychological thriller that I ended up enjoying way more than I anticipated. The friendship between Sarah Snook and Dakota Fanning was wonderfully unexpected, and I loved the final reveals and the satisfying ending.

The Beast in Me (miniseries)

This was a much more serious thriller in which Claire Danes begins to suspect her neighbour of being a murderer and becomes entangled in his web of lies and secrets. I really enjoyed it, and the acting was phenomenal, but I must say I was a bit disappointed by its predictability.

The Long Walk (2025)

For some reason I thought this would be a good scary choice for Halloween, and it ended up being one of the most depressing movies I’ve seen lately. Despite that, I thought the film was really well done, and the two protagonists were incredible. Recommended.

Eden (2024)

This film has a great premise, popular actors, a great director, and it’s definitely original, so I don’t understand why it bombed. I wouldn’t say I loved it, although I do think it’s worth watching for the social dynamics and the debate it spurs.

Predator: Badlands (2025)

I loved Prey, and this one had Elle Fanning, so I couldn’t wait to watch it. It was really different from Prey but a fun movie: a very classic sci-fi adventure for all audiences, which I usually enjoy. The friendship was really cute, and I would watch more.

Bugonia (2025)

A bizarre movie with some funny moments and also some very dark scenes. Again, the acting was brilliant, and it will definitely spark controversy, but I do think it was also a bit predictable. I definitely enjoyed it, but I still prefer Poor Things.

Frankenstein (2025)

A very classic movie with beautiful cinematography and production design, and a compelling performance by Jacob Elordi. I liked it, it was good, I can’t complain about anything, but still, I didn’t loooove it.

Bone Lake (2024)

A campy and violent erotic thriller in which a couple sees their love and loyalty tested during a weekend in a remote lake house. It’s reminiscent of Speak No Evil, but more focused on couple dynamics. Fun, fun, fun.

The Birdcage (1996)

A feel-good comedy that remains a classic to this day. A gay couple pretends to be heterosexual when Robin Williams’s son wants them to meet his fiancée’s conservative parents. Nathan Lane is the real star, and it’s a movie you can watch over and over without ever getting tired of it.

What I read 📖

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Silent Companions is a great Halloween read, a gothic tale of suspense where we follow Elsie as she moves to her dead husband’s estate, The Bridge, along with his cousin. Together, the women discover mysterious locked rooms and painted wooden figures (the companions) that seem to follow their every move, appear out of nowhere, and cause deadly accidents. At the same time, we learn that in the present, that is, 1866, Elsie is confined in an asylum, accused of murder, rendered mute, and given the opportunity to write her story. The novel also features the diaries of Anne Bainbridge from 1660, who also lived in the house and was believed to be a witch.

The book is well-written, not long or dense, and creates a dark and unsettling atmosphere that would be perfect for a series or film adaptation. The characters are well-fleshed-out, and you can easily picture the crumbling mansion and the eerie companions. I especially loved Anne’s diary section, I found her story quite gripping and tense, and the ending is excellent as well.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I admit I fell in love with the title and cover of this one, although I wasn’t exactly sure if I’d enjoy it that much based on past experiences with the author. Turns out, this was the perfect Halloween read for me, and I loved this toxic lesbian vampire romance and epic, century-lasting adventure down to the last page. While it’s true that it’s rather slow-moving and the length can be intimidating, this ultimately really worked for me, and I was completely consumed by its narrative, the beautiful writing, and the incredible atmosphere, finishing it quite quickly despite the number of pages.

This is the story of three women: María/Sabine, Lottie, and Alice. Each comes from a completely different time period, but their three lives will be intricately connected and fated the day María meets a young and mysterious widow. Without spoiling too much, this is many things: a romance, a revenge story, a tale of hunger, passion, and freedom, with a volatile and toxic relationship at its core, and beautiful and tangled relationships throughout. I’m not usually one to root for villains, but Sabine was such a great character, so hypnotic and captivating, that it was a pleasure to read, and that is a great accomplishment for me.

The Possession of Alba Díaz by Isabel Cañas ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Possession of Alba Díaz is the latest book by author Isabel Cañas, a mix of horror, romance, and historical fiction set in 1765 Nueva España. Alba, her family, and her new fiancé escape the Zacatecas plague by moving to an isolated mine, where Alba falls victim to a demonic possession. Another main character is Elías, a young man whose point of view we also follow: an alchemist and convict, cousin to Carlos, Alba’s fiancé, who’s trying to make a fortune and escape, but doesn’t expect to fall in love with Alba. Of course, he’ll try to help her.

The book was instantly captivating, offering a truly gothic atmosphere. I also loved how the themes of horror and possession work as a metaphor for women’s struggles during those years, as well as the Catholic Church’s and traditional family’s attempts to control Alba and her choices. The priest and the Inquisition end up being the actual villains of the story. This was a really atmospheric novel, one that I enjoyed immensely despite a few slow parts in the middle. I also thought the addition of Indigenous rituals and the side characters provided great context and made it a well-rounded, well-researched, and insightful Halloween read.

What I watched 📺

House of Guinness (S01)

A gripping, dark, and well-acted family drama that draws inspiration from the real Guinness family, exploring their troubles, ambitions, relationships, and vices; all accompanied by a great soundtrack. Lady Olivia was the standout for me.

Task (miniseries)

Probably my favorite new crime show this year: an engaging, sad, and poignant character-led thriller that is excellently written, brilliantly acted, and understands that thrillers can be equally exciting and profound. All the awards.

The Rainmaker (s01)

A good old-fashioned courtroom drama based on the novel by John Grisham (and its film adaptation). It’s quite different from the original source, but always entertaining, and the addition of Sarah made things more interesting. I’d like to see it continue.

Adults (s01)

This was hilarious from the start. The characters are obviously caricatures and way over the top, but the dynamics between the group of friends were fun and sweet, and I loved watching the relationship between Paul Baker and Anton begin to take shape.

Bookish (s01)

I love a good classic British mystery, and this one was really enjoyable. Three different cases across six episodes (my favorite was the second case involving a film shoot). There were some surprises along the way, and I’d love to spend more time with these characters.

The Life of Chuck (2025)

I’m a big fan of Mike Flanagan, so I was surprised that I didn’t love this as much as I’d hoped to. It was beautiful, I really liked the ending reveal, and the dancing scenes were magical: but overall, I found the movie pretty disjointed.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025)

I was sad to say goodbye to these characters and to Downton Abbey itself (which I visited back in 2012!). I’ve loved watching Lady Mary grow and evolve and this honestly felt like the perfect farewell for me.

Black Phone 2 (2025)

I like my horror on the fun side, but I have to admit I enjoyed this one. The snowy atmosphere was really immersive, and the dream scenes were dark and captivating. The story might not be anything groundbreaking, but I still think this was really well-done.

Clown in a Cornfield (2025)

I read the book years ago and thought a film would be super fun. And it was! Gory, ridiculous, and with a fresh villain motive. Plus, the “final girl” was great, and it even had a cute and unexpected romance.

The Collector (1965)

An intimate and strangely beautiful psychological drama and thriller about a kidnapper obsessed with butterflies. This was an instant favorite when I first watched it, and I’ve been wanting to revisit it ever since.

What I read 📖

All the Sinners Bleed by S.A Cosby ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I don’t know why I didn’t read this sooner, I guess I thought it would be more of a dense literary thriller and wanted to be in the right mood. As soon as I started it, I realized it wasn’t dense at all. It’s beautifully written and has a literary vibe, but it’s still a crime procedural: a serial killer thriller with a heavy focus on racism and white supremacy.

The plot is never boring; it begins with a shocking event at the high school, and what follows is a thrilling and extremely dark (and sometimes deeply depressing) story set against an atmospheric southern backdrop. I liked Titus, the first Black sheriff of Charon County, Virginia. He’s a professional, determined, and sharp man who refuses to be intimidated and is willing to do whatever it takes to carry out this investigation, no matter what enemies or dangers he faces along the way. This was a great story with a big, epic feel to it. I can’t wait to watch the series adaptation.

People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It’s become a theme now: when I’m in the mood for something light and romantic, I turn to Emily Henry. With this one becoming a Netflix movie soon, I decided to read People We Meet on Vacation. The story follows the 12-year friendship of Poppy and Alex, two very different people who somehow became best friends and take yearly summer trips around the world. Over the years, the lines of their relationship begin to blur; feelings surface, but timing, fears, and other people always seem to get in the way of taking things to the next level. We follow Poppy and Alex’s story from their very first encounter through each summer vacation, up to the one that tore their friendship apart. We also see their attempt to repair it with a new trip to Palm Springs, where Alex’s brother is getting married.

While I’m not usually the biggest fan of this trope, there’s something about Emily Henry’s storytelling and writing that always pulls me in and makes me root for her characters to end up together, no matter how doomed they might seem. This was a cute, entertaining, and thoroughly engaging romantic comedy reminiscent of When Harry Met Sally.

What I watched 📺

Platonic (s02) — They annoy the hell out of me, but I can’t stop watching. It’s such a fun show, and I love Byrne and Rogen: their chemistry is fantastic, and they’re two of my favorite comedy actors.

Blue Lights (s013) — I found this season even more dramatic than the previous ones, but just as gripping and tense. Six episodes are way too few! Aisling’s storyline was great, but Stevie and Grace made me suffer.

Novocaine (Dan Berk, Robert Olsen, 2025) — This was genuinely funny, way gorier than I anticipated, and the concept made it feel fresh. Jack Quaid is charming and Amber Midthunder is great as well, they were so cute!

Play Dirty (Shane Black, 2025) — I’m a big fan of Shane Black, and I found his latest film really fun, violent, and, as usual, highly entertaining. It might not become a classic like some of his others, but I had a great time.

One Battle After Another (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2025) — This was so hyped that I was a bit hesitant, but I ended up really enjoying it. DiCaprio and Del Toro were hilarious, and Sean Penn’s performance will haunt me forever.

The Lost Bus (Paul Greengrass, 2025) — I love a big, emotional disaster movie, and this one was undeniably tense and had its moments. It might lack that extra something to make it memorable, but it was well executed.

Breaking Walls (Borja Cobeaga, 2025) — A light, beautiful, and cozy film about four fathers accompanying their daughters to a gymnastics championship in 1989 Berlin. Simple yet moving.

The Wonder (Sebastián Lelio, 2022) — I can’t say enough about this film. I haven’t read the book, but it absolutely amazed me when I watched it a few years ago. I know it might not be for everyone because of its slow pace, but Florence Pugh was incredible, and the story was both captivating and powerful.

What I read 📖

The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Road to Tender Hearts is a delightful, cozy yet dark, sad but uplifting road-trip book featuring a set of eccentric characters and a quirky narration, telling the story of PJ Halliday, sixty-three (although I believe he is written to appear much older), an alcoholic father and ex-husband who finds himself suddenly in charge of two Irish twins, Luna and Ollie, who have recently been orphaned. Wanting to make things right and to help Luna find whom she believes is her real dad, together with PJ’s moody daughter Sophie, they embark on a fun, chaotic, and wild adventure from Massachusetts towards the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Arizona, where PJ plans to win his recently widowed high school sweetheart’s heart back.

This was an unexpected win of a book that manages to make you smile and warm your heart, despite all the tragedies and dark elements throughout, because believe me, dark things happen. In spite of that, the general feeling of the book was humorous, and it was such a pleasure to read. At first, I wasn’t sure because I thought it was excessively whimsical, but after a few pages I realized the story had me grinning, and I already loved the characters too much. They were all flawed but lovable, and you could not help rooting for them. The story went places I didn’t imagine, and at the end I was sad to see these characters go.

The Names by Florence Knapp ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Names is a thoughtful, poignant yet sad, intimate story that interested me as soon as I read the synopsis. A woman named Cora hesitates when naming her son at the registrar, and what follows are the three lives that he would have lived if she chose Bear (the name his sister Maia suggests), Julian (the one Cora likes), or Gordon (the one his violent father wants). We follow the lives of Cora, Maia, and Bear/Julian/Gordon throughout 35 years, focusing on both relevant and mundane scenes of their lives, watching the consequences of his chosen name affect everyone around him.

This was such a unique concept, told in a sliding-doors narrative, jumping seven years each time and written in beautiful prose. I was immediately captivated by this complex and compelling family, and the novel actually made me reflect on how a seemingly simple act can change so many aspects of one’s life; we won’t ever know if this is actually true, of course, but it really makes you think. I did get some things mixed up every now and then (I didn’t remember if something had happened to Bear/Julian/Gordon), but the lives are vastly different, so it’s not a major issue. Overall, this was a solid literary fiction gem that I can easily recommend to everyone who enjoys a good family drama based on an original idea.

The Killer Question by Janice Hallett ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The queen of mixed-format mysteries is back, and this time the plot revolves around trivia nights, which is definitely unexpected and wholly original. As usual, we get to know the characters and the story through mobile messages, emails, police reports, recorded conversations, and news stories. The main part of the story focuses on Mal and Sue Eastwood, a couple who runs a pub famous for its weekly trivia night. When a new team with a great winning streak appears, suspicions arise, tensions build, and a dead body turns up. But what does this have to do with Sue and Mal’s past? And what exactly happened?

Reading a Janice Hallett book is always something I look forward to. She’s one of my favorite authors; I love how well-plotted and complex her mysteries are. One might think, based on the format, that the books are easy, but far from the truth: these are intricate stories that require close attention to every detail. This one is no different. The plot is filled with twists, and although I anticipated some things, there were plenty of surprises, and the story went to unexpected places. I love when a reveal makes you reconsider everything you’ve just read, and this book did that several times. Plus, the characterisation is, as usual, sublime, with plenty of hilarious remarks and fun comebacks. I particularly enjoyed Fiona’s messages and the banter and rivalry between the teams. It may not be my favorite of hers because I felt the pace dragged at times, but the last quarter is amazing.

What I watched 📺

The Girlfriend (miniseries) — A soapy thriller and just exactly what I needed in a worry-filled week. It kept me hooked, and although I won’t remember it forever, the two actresses made it well worth watching. I was totally Team Cherry, by the way.

The Paper (s01) — I was curious after watching The Office, and this one didn’t disappoint. It found its rhythm rather quickly (quicker than the original, if I may), and it has several laugh-out-loud episodes. I enjoyed it and will watch season 2 for sure.

Jurassic World: Rebirth (Gareth Edwards, 2025) — A perfectly solid summer escapism and a good old-time classic adventure. I had a great time with it and wholly disagree with the critics.

She Rides Shotgun (Nick Rowland, 2025) — Having loved the book, I was curious to watch this one. Taron Egerton gave a solid performance, but it was the kid, Ana Sophia Heger, who stole the show for me. A good, no-nonsense thriller.

The Conjuring: Last Rites (Michael Chaves, 2025) — Like saying goodbye to members of your family. I kind of love that this horror saga has such a cozy and sappy feel to it. It was probably a bit repetitive, but I feel like it was the end of an era.

The Wrong Paris (Janeen Damian, 2025) — A delightfully silly romcom, it was just what I needed when I watched it, and we had a good time. Of course, it doesn’t revolutionize the genre or anything, but the premise was fun enough and the main characters had great chemistry.

Sneakers (Phil Alden Robinson, 1992) — In honor of Robert Redford, I wanted to highlight one of his lesser-known films: a fun conspiracy thriller with some great comedy moments and a wonderful cast. Perfect for a cozy night in when you don’t want to think too much.
