Modest. Easy to work with. A real team player. Every trait a woman gets praised for carries the same rule folded inside it: don’t make this about you.

So we didn’t.

We round our wins down before anyone else can. We hand the credit to the team on reflex. Saying “we” when it was us — and call it humility. The rule went internal. And an internal rule doesn’t need a warden.

The good news? None of this is permanent.

A trait that got trained into you can be trained right back out — and the way you do it is through your personal brand. Building out loud, unapologetically, with your name on everything you are and believe.

Everything women were praised for making smaller? We get to take back on purpose.

What We Were Taught

Before the world ever underestimates us, most of us have beaten it to the punch:

Wait until you’re completely sure, apply only when you meet every last line of the job description, don’t reach for the thing you haven’t “fully earned.” It sounds like reason. It’s really just the old programming still running.

And it’s not in our heads — a Harvard study put numbers to it. Economists Christine Exley and Judd Kessler gave men and women the same task, then asked each person to rate their own work. When the results were identical, the average man gave themselves a 61 out of 100 while the average woman gave herself a 46. That same study found a similar gap in schoolchildren, an eleven-year-old already scoring herself below what she earned.

But — we were never underqualified. We were taught to act like we were.

That act is done.

The Rooms We’re Done Waiting On

A heavily-influenced internal narrative is only half the problem, and the other half was never ours to fix:

Just over 2% of venture capital still goes to companies founded by women — barely moved in thirty years, according to PitchBook. Fewer than one in three C-suite seats belongs to a woman (McKinsey and LeanIn). Reach anyway, and you’re often walking up to a door that was never expecting you.

The old move was to wait to be invited. Earn the seat twice over. But you can’t out-behave a room that was designed around your absence.

So we stop working and waiting for the wrong rooms to welcome us.

Collectively as women, we build in our own names until the right rooms find us.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" System

Breaking these internal and external systems starts with three moves. Each one is the opposite of something you were praised for.

Take inventory — the accurate version, not the modest one.
Write down what you’re actually great at. Ask the people closest to you what they’d call you for. Use assessments you trust (I like Myers Briggs and Human Design), if they help you welcome in your strengths, tendencies and gifts.
You’re recording your assets as fact, not as a mood you happen to be in on a good day.

Say it in public, without apology.
Pick one thing you know cold and one group of people you want to reach, and put yourself in front of them — this week, and again next week. Cut the “just,” the “I think,” the “does that make sense?” If people don’t like it? They aren’t your people.
When it feels risky, that’s the signal you’re on ground worth claiming — not a reason to go quiet.

Back the women rising around you.
Promote a win that isn't yours. Hold open the door you already walked through. Pass along the intel, the intro, the opportunity you heard about. And when she gets a raise, a new title, an investor — share it.
Said enough times, out loud, women building their own professional equity starts looking like the standard.

What Happens When You Do

You stop asking permission to want what you want. You give yourself the credibility you spent years waiting for someone else to grant. There’s no vague accolade left to chase — you’re the final keeper of your own value.

Then the world catches up. Authority you’ve built in your own name belongs to you and starts to compound. Rooms that can actually hold your presence open. Opportunities that already know your worth start finding you — because your name means something now, and you’re the one who made it mean that.

This is how we rise — not one at a time, waiting our turn, but together, until a woman owning her full power is the least remarkable thing in the room.

We were praised, once, for making ourselves small.

Watch what happens when we refuse.

Known By Name -- a 3-day personal brand mini-challenge.
July 21–23. The Art of Becoming, I’m joined by Amanda Vargus — founder of Wave + Woven, a concierge personal styling service for busy entrepreneurs and high-profile professionals. After nearly two decades in digital advertising, Amanda used the unraveling of the pandemic to leap into a complete career reinvention. Now, four years into building Wave + Woven, she’s one of Boston’s most sought-after stylists and the producer of the city’s annual Runway Ball, a 500-person fashion event benefiting St. Jude.

Amanda is one of the most fearless founders I know. We talk about the catalyst that pushed her out of corporate, the realities of building a service-based business with no safety net, and why she believes your wardrobe is the final, often-missing layer of your personal brand.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Cap table seats. Founder stakes. Creator platforms, once for rent at a campaign price, are now being recognized as business assets — valuable enough to be leveraged for equity stakes.

Because when you build in your own name, your personal worth compounds. Visibility becomes leverage. Leverage becomes ownership.

But getting there takes time, and it doesn’t skip steps. Personal brands pay the people who stay.

Here’s how to navigate the path from the humble beginnings of building a personal brand, to the promise land of brand deals and ownership.

After more than two decades placing executives at brands like LVMH, Victoria Beckham, Veronica Beard, and Christian Louboutin, Meghan is reimagining recruitment for the way the industry actually works now.

Meghan is one of the most determined founders I know. We talk about what it actually looks like to leap from service-based business owner to tech founder, the financial and emotional reality of building a platform from scratch, and why she stopped people-pleasing in business relationships.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It isn’t time.

It’s seeking consensus.

There’s a pressure that precedes every version of who you’re becoming: the need to make sense of her before you’ve fully met her. To articulate her cleanly. To have a defensible answer when someone asks where you’re headed.

That pressure feels like it’s coming from the world around you. It’s really not.

It’s coming from the part of your own mind that doesn’t yet trust what you saw.

Typically, you feel it before you can fully articulate it — the venture you’d build, the aligned partner, the life that’s been quietly assembling itself in your imagination for months.

For a moment, the vision is yours alone. And it makes total sense.

Then the doubt arrives faster than you can catch it. You’re scrambling for backup — polling your inner circle, floating the idea at brunch, scrolling looking for someone who’s already done some version of what you’re imagining. Just to have proof that it’s doable.

Getting input from others feels like gathering information. What it actually is, is trying to backfill courage with consensus.

Because consensus-seeking for who you’re becoming isn’t about getting an answer. It’s about finding relief.

Being the only person who can see what you’re seeing is uncomfortable as f*ck. So your brain offers up a solution: go check with someone. Get buy-in. Get permission. Make the discomfort go away.

But you don’t actually get any clarity. You get reassurance. And reassurance feels close enough to clarity that you might not even notice the swap — until years later, when you realize you’ve been collecting input instead of actually moving closer to who you want to become.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" isn’t that your intuition is wrong. It’s already given you the answer. But intuition doesn’t speak the language your brain is craving.

Logic is loud. It builds a case. It comes with reasons, examples and evidence. It’s right or wrong.

Intuition is quieter. It doesn’t doesn’t show its work, doesn’t come with proof. It speaks in pulls and nudges, in small certainties that arrive without explanation.

By the time you try to defend your knowing — “I don’t know, I just feel it” — you sound like you’re avoiding the question. When really, you’re probably closer to the answer than you’ve ever been.

Conviction is what bridges the gap between knowing and doing.

Not the absence of doubt, not certainty about the outcome, but the commitment to trust your own knowing in the absence of external confirmation. To move with the information you already have, instead of waiting for the world to validate that you have it.

So before you go looking for external confirmation of what you already know, sit with a few questions of your own.

Which of your “I’m just gathering input” conversations are actually consensus-seeking in better packaging? The ones where you’re not really asking for tactical advice. You’re asking for permission to want what you want.

When you imagine the choice, what does your body actually do? Pay attention to whether something opens or closes. Your nervous system has been collecting evidence your mind hasn’t catalogued yet.

And the big one: what would you do if you trusted yourself completely on this? Don’t ask whether you should do it. Ask what the version of you who already trusts herself would do — and notice how clearly you already know the answer.

I’ve done some deep field research on this guys. The mental habit of consulting before committing had nearly calcified from a behavior into a personality trait.

For two years, I ignored a knowing I couldn’t fully explain: that my next chapter was meant to unfold in California. I didn’t fully understand why. I just knew.

Four days ago, I put my cargo van in park on California’s central coast. I excavated my artwork from its questionably-wrapped bubble paper casing, gave my plants a much-needed drink (everyone made it, phew), and opened the antique crank windows in my sun-filled apartment.

Piper and I went for a walk later that night by the ocean. Palm trees were leaning toward the water while whoops of encouragement from a pickup soccer game broke through the sound of waves crashing.

I stood there feeling something in my body I’d never quite felt before — utter gratitude for the version of me who had trusted what she knew. A moment I would have missed entirely if I’d continued to gather endless input.

Consensus will get you nowhere.

Conviction will get you everywhere. Heading west to realize a dream that’s come together somehow too quickly, and still not nearly fast enough.

But I’ve always been impatient.

Whether it was burning my mouth on brownies straight out of the oven as a little girl, or grinding for the next promotion because it felt like the truest gauge of my self-worth.

My greatest skill and detriment has always been dreaming big. Planning the next chapter of my life while abandoning myself in this one.

I’ve treated my ambition like a destination — something I could reach if I just kept working harder, planning longer, optimizing for the right things. Forward progress and external approval were my primary KPIs.

Until six years ago, when I looked up and realized the rushing had taken me somewhere I never meant to go. Married to a man who wasn’t my match. Living in a home that felt like it was built for another family. In an agency job that paid six figures but paid nothing in purpose.

That’s where the chasing finally stopped — not because I’d arrived.

Because I’d run out of road.

Embedded in the stories of so many powerful women is an unraveling — of situations built in misalignment, of identities unconsciously claimed, and relationships outgrown.

And hearing the retelling of those moments always sounds heroic. Brave. Predestined. Beautiful.

But living that unraveling? It can feel like a betrayal — to yourself, and to the people closest to you.

It’s looking in the mirror and not quite remembering how you got to this version of yourself. It’s the people who love you not fully understanding where you’re going. It’s watching your bank account gather dust bunnies while your big vision takes shape.

The unraveling doesn’t ask for your permission first. It just asks you to release everything you thought you needed, long before anything new has come to take its place.

<a class="image-link image2 The Art of Becoming, I’m joined by Scout Driscoll — Founder and CEO of DesignScout, a 22-year-old Chicago-based branding agency, and its beverage-alcohol division, VINT.

In an industry rich with heritage of hustle, burnout, and 60-hour weeks, Scout has built something genuinely counter-cultural: a thriving agency with a team whose average tenure is nine years, a company culture rooted in what she calls “rest ethic,” and a leadership philosophy that puts her people first — period.

We talk about what it actually takes to build a successful business that gives back to you, and how the counter to the rise-and-grind playbook isn’t slower work — it’s clearer boundaries.

<a The Art of Becoming, I’m joined by Amalia Bussard — founder of East Pine Plant Shop and a nature artist who has spent the last five years building a sanctuary in Maine.

We talk about what it actually looks like to channel a vision into reality, how to know when something in your business needs to be pruned, and why slow living isn’t a vibe — it’s a survival skill for ambitious women.

She opens up about leaving the corporate playbook behind, recognizing the projects that look good on the outside but deplete you on the inside, and learning to trust the visions that have been guiding her since childhood. We get into the importance of pockets — small intentional moments of joy, presence, and quiet — and why the people you surround yourself with either help you trust your intuition or quietly erode it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" episode of The Art of Becoming, I’m joined by Kaitlyn Parker — copywriter, brand strategist, and founder of Copy Uncorked, who has written for over 250 brands worldwide and is the woman behind much of my own brand messaging. We’re talking about what it actually looks like to evolve a creative business in real time — through industry shifts, AI’s arrival, and the personal seasons that change what success even means.

Kaitlyn opens up about the year that changed everything: scaling her agency back to a more solopreneur model, becoming a mom, watching the creative industry recalibrate, and learning to use AI without losing the soul of her work.

We talk about why pivots show up in the body before the brain, how to know when to tear something down versus tweak it, and what it means to “cheat time” by building a business that actually gives you more of it.
<div
